The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 179,000.
The airbags and shoulder harness both failed in a front end collision at highway speed resulting in injuries to the driver.*la
Driver lost control of the vehicle due to road conditions, causing the front right corner to hit a wall on the ramp. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy.
Manufacturer refuses to investigate air bag defect, along with the other problems.however, i am concern about driving around in a vehicle i thought was safe.me and my children could have lost our lives to that 18 wheel truck.the truck struck both the fron and rear of my 1998 sable and the bags did not deploy.fordconsumer affairs department stated to me that the vehicle was never on a call back and the manufacturer warranty expired.i had an extended warranty on my car at the time of the accident.i had this car tested when i first purchased it.it had some electrical and engine problems of which i held on to the invoices .i feel that the manufacturer is responsible for this defect.it undetermine ifthe car was defective at the time of purchase.but i can say it had electrical problems.which may have affected the air bag sensors.
While driving at any speed overdrive light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.this caused the speedometer to drop to zero, and the srs light illuminated on the dashboard.also, horn became inoperative. Vehicle was taken tot he dealer for inspection.
I was in an accident where i struck another vehicle broadside. My car's front end was totaled, along with the frame cracking. What did not happen was the airbag did not deploy. The car was a total lost.
Consumer states air bags deployed w/o warning while parking vehicle.driver's bag did not deploy completely. Mr
Consumer was driving over 50 mph on highway, and in between two 18 wheelers.the 18 wheeler on right hand side hit vehicle on side. Then, pushed vehicle into another18 wheeler on left side. While drivingboth air bags deployed without impact which caused driver to form a violent maneuver in the road, crashing into the vehicle ahead. On several occasions, before the air bag deployment, drivernoticed the air bag warning light would flickerwhenever going over any kind of bump in the road. The vehicle was rented from hertz rental car company.
While drivingat 35 mph accident occurred, and driver was injured. Upon impact, air bag did not deploy. Please provide any further information.
Consumer request that dealer install a on/off switch for the air bag system on the driver's side. Dearler will not consider the installation.
For years i have had electrical problems on 1998 mercury sable--the dome light, floor lights and door lights constantly on.i keep the dome light off.the floor light bulbs were removed.door lights are constantly on.however, 1.5 years ago, i lost all headlights at night upon entering a highway.i could risk using high beams by holding in place.multifunction arm was replaced and the dial on dashboard.then both dials were replaced for fan and heating, defrost and air conditioner.then told my computer chip needs to be replaced.i have no defroster, heat, fan or air conditioner.also, last year after dealing with service engine light on and off then staying on for years, had to replace the emissions sensor for car to be inspected.would a dealer be willing to give me a defroster fix and/or heat.many people have told me that ford and mercury are known for electrical problems.and over 1500 dollars later and i still have a defective, unsafe car.
My check engine light came on. I took my car to a repair shop to retrieve stored engine control codespo443 and po455. I replaced the part and there is still the same code po443 and po455. I keep my old part.
While exiting vehicle after driving for about twenty minutes, vehicle caught fire.cause is unknown. There were no warning.please provide any further information. Mr
The vehicle is experiencing an electrical problem, the radio has been replaced 2 times because of a short, the battery is draining causing the vehicle to be inoperable.
While the cruise control was set at 60 mph, the vehicle stalled then restarted by itself.the dealer could not duplicate or determine the cause of the problem.the cause of the problem was in the switch and a loose wire.the vehicle restartedon it's own and was sometimes hard to start.(hard to start, hot or cold)when the vehicle died at low speeds, it did not restart and was hard to start immediately after but would start within 2-3 minutes. *scc
Engine light would come on & then go off on its own while driving.door/ dome & floor lights would remain on at same time. Do not go out. Ran downbattery. Have taken to dealership.
While sitting at a traffic light, the vehicle went completely dead, the vehicle was towed to the delership where it was determined that the battery needed to be replaced.
Battery failed.nlm
Consumer stated on 2 separate incidents while driving, the alternator overcharged and blew out causing vehicle to stall.*mr

I have had a oil leak several times replaced oil pan and gasket 4 time,s still have problem, headlights work intermittently, and are now completely out.
This is the 2nd year in a row that i have had to have the engine cooling system flushed because it is getting something in it from the engine and then blocking the heater core. My mechanic (a neghbor) indicated that he has started seeing this problem in a lot of sables & tarauses at 4 years or more.
This is the second time i have had to repair this problem, the first occurred at 62,000 miles, and i feel ford is dragging their feet in a similar fashion to the 3.8 litre motor incident. No safety defect listed.
Vehicle overheated. Engine check light didn't come on.consumer smelled smoke. Took vehicle to mechanic. Mechanic changed thermostat.next day waterwas all over the ground. Problemwas still occurring. Please provide any further information.
The radiator coolant system hose come off, and leaked transmission fluid. This resulted in the transmission failure.the service shop indicated that the cause of the hose coming off could be caused by pressure build up.please provide more details.
I have had problems with this car since the day i purchased it.along with everything else that is wrong with it, there is a odor entering the vehicle, mainly on the passenger's front when at a stop.we have taken the car to all the local dealers and they either tell us they can smell it and just spray air freshner into the vents.others say they can't smell anything and therefore can't do anything about it.we recently took the car to a private garage and they found evidence of fluid leaking or spraying onto the exhaust manifold.it is felt that the fluid is coming from the hydraulic engine mount on the passenger side.the odor causes a burning sensation in the throat and lungs and followed by headaches.in one case, it caused severe breathing problems.this person already has lung related problems but this odor caused a severe and violent reaction.you have nothing listing what is used in the new engine mounts therefore making it appear that this could be a toxic substance when brought into contact with a hot manifold.what does it take to.

My 1998 mercury sable with 3.0 liter engine apparently is designed to provide no engine braking when coasting.the engine computer prevents the engine from returning to idle.other have told me that this occurs with other ford taurus' and sables.this condition results in excessive speed building up when going downhill - especially with the cruise control engaged.
When the consumer removed his removed his foot from the accelerator pedal, the vehicle continued to accelerate.also, when the brakes were applied the engine continued to surge.
While traveling on highway and without prior warning vehicle will shake while applyingbrakes. Also, motor mounts were defective.

The catalytic converter emitted odors that made the driver sick . This could cause the driver to loss control.dealer has seen vehicle three times ,and no one could find the cause.
While driving consumer noticed black smoke coming from the engine.consumer pulled the vehicle over, called a tow truck, andvehicle was towed to the dealership. Mechanic informed consumer that the plastic intake manifoldfailed.
Power radio antenna failed.yh
Radio failed.
The high beams do not function, unless the lever (which changes the beam from low to high) is pulled towards me and held constantly in that position.when this lever is released the high beams go off, but there are no low beams.the defective part , according to my mechanic, is the "lighting control module".
No brakelight appearing onlight bulbs socket.dealership is aware of problem.brake light is only working when car is in reverse, there is no fuse information for brake light in the users manual and ford motor co can not find specs.*mj
I have had a oil leak several times replaced oil pan and gasket 4 time,s still have problem, headlights work intermittently, and are now completely out.
Intermittently headlights become inoperable. Dealer has inspected and repaired vehicle several times, and has not been able to properly correct the vehicle.
Turn signals are not working properly. Dealer replaced the multi-functionswitch.
Prior to recall regarding obdii, consumer experienced faintness, nausea and dizziness, followed by headaches and weakness while driving, consumer became aware of the recall and had repairs completed on the vehicle, however consumer sought a second opinion and emission leaks were found in the manifold areas and the catalytic conversion pipe, consumer does not feel safe driving this vehicle due to the carbon monoxide poisoning.

The symptom is the 'check engine' light is always on. It consumes much more gas than before during idling and the engine temperature tends to be high.
While parking vehicle a loud popping sound was heard coming from under the hood. Hood was raised and afirebroke out against fire wall in center area of vehcle. Believedfire was caused by a fuel leakage from injector rail. Dealer / manufacturer were not contacted at this time. Can nhtsa help in this matter.
Heavy smell of gasoline is felt when gas tank is above 3/4 full or making left hand turns above 20 mph. Dealer attempted to fix problem, but smell continues.claim they have seen it in many 1998 sables.
Electronic sensor assembly.f6dz-964444-ea. Fuel gauge assembly.f7dz-93055-aa. Problems since purchase.
Windshield--lines in glass. Dashboard--covering is bubbled.
Turned vehicle off to fill it with fuel. Turned it off & then on without starting. Was unable to shift vehicle into neutral to be moved. Contacted dealer & was informed how to shift when on but not running.
Consumer was complaining aboutbrake problems. When pressing the brake pedal itwent down to the floor, and brakes failed. Also, interior light stayed on.
Engine light would come on & then go off on its own while driving.door/ dome & floor lights would remain on at same time. Do not go out. Ran downbattery. Have taken to dealership.
Interior lights stay on & when this happens the electronic door lock malfunctions at the same time
Intermittently whendoor is colsed and sometimes while driving interior light will stay on. Dealer has replaced wiring harness; however, problem still exists.
The interior dome light appears and will not go off.the dealer is aware of the problem.the light stayed illuminated since it was broke. As a result, it impaired the consumer's vision and caused an accident. Vehicle was totaled. Consumer sustained head injuries and his pregnant fiance' was went into early labor.*ph
Door ajar light stays even though all doors are shutwhich causes dome and interior light to stay on.thiscan result in battery draining.when the door ajar light illuminates, the power window and power door locks fail.
Persistent problem with many mercury/ford cars and trucks. Faulty door sensors indicate unsafe condition (doors not close/latch). Two very serious safety conditions result from this false indication: (a) the driver ignores the false indicator which puts the driver and all occupants at risk when an actual unsafe condition does exist.(b) the interior lights are illuminated while driving and cannot be extinguished.this restricts night time visibility and causes an unsafe condition to exist.(c) the driver's door cannot be locked. This presents a potential security issue to the driver.these faulty sensors (or faulty design) have been installed in mercury/ford products for a number of years.
The torque converter clutch did not engage at times, which caused a hard shift.
The car lost drive power, and appeared to go into neutral.the transmission shop later found that a shaft, from the torque converter to the pump, had snapped.the shaft is a fairly substantial piece of metal.the shop repaired the transmission but could not make a guess as to the reason for the metal failure.i have the shaft that snapped and can provide digital images.there is no obvious reason to me why it would have snapped wether it is design or metallurgy.i can provide digital images of the component breakage.if you so desire, i can provide you with the part if you wish to perform failure analysis for metal defects / manufacturing problems, or design issues.in my case, the failure happened on a lightly travelled road, with no traffic around.if this a failure that had occurred on a busy highway, while turning in traffic, or during many scenarios - this could have caused a real problem for me, passengers, or other motorists.i hope that anyone else with the same failure is as fortunate.
Servo valve body piston failed to operate. Nlm
Makes a pronounced continual "winding up/down" noise while accelerating/trans shifts.transmission shop can't pinpoint noise; only that it's coming from transmission.
A $2 retaining clip affecting the 4th gear in the automatic tran is broken or has come off, according to the dealers computer code reading and service bulletin, andit is going to cost up to $900 to fix if it damaged the housing inside.
While waiting at a stopvehicle shook/vibrated. Consumer was able to pull over to the shoulder, and vehicle shut down.

I drove the car to do errands andit was not having any problems.i parked the car at the mall and came back to drive home andthe transmission failed.the gears would not engage.i was forced to have it towed home.it showed no signs of having a problem, and the transmission fluid was intact with no signs of a problem. This appearedto be a costly repair, so i chose not to fix it at this time.
Consumer pressed down on accelerator pedal and vehicle did not move. Vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. Internal failure. Had to replace transmission.
I've noticed since purchasing the vehicle, that it sometimes hesitates when you step on the gas from a dead start and you must maintain your foot on the pedal until it shifts or it would jerk.i've never driven a vehicle that performed this way and not knowing much about cars, didn't know there was a problem.now it's stuck in gear at 60mph.it has also droped into neutral for no apparent reason but once i shifted it into reverse and then drive, the gear kicked in.
When traveling andstopping transmissionwill go into neutral, and car will not go forward or backward.consumer has to puttransmissioninto park, andthen bring itback into drive.
Transmission malfunctiones on shifting.yh
While driving there was a loud noise coming from underneath the vehicle.*nlm
After turning a corner transmission hesitates if i try to accelerate quickly. I think it is "hunting" because it will drop down to 1st gear and accelerate rapidly. It does hesitate long enough to be dangerous.
The driver pressed down on the accelerated pedal and the vehicledid not move.the vehicle was towed to the dealer for analysis.the dealer foundinternal failure of the transmission.the transmission had to be replaced.*nlm
Transmission failed.yh
While driving at any speed overdrive light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.this caused the speedometer to drop to zero, and the srs light illuminated on the dashboard.also, horn became inoperative. Vehicle was taken tot he dealer for inspection.

Vehicle experiencing a problem with not shiftinginto gearintermittently / momentarily while traveling. This problem had occurred on four occasions within 2 1/2 years.vehicle been into dealer's shop on two occasions, and unable to locate the problem..
Vehicle does not work effectively in slowing vehicle when engaging speed 2 or speed 1.
Transmission cooler line is leaking. Yh
Transmission will intermittently drop out of gear into neutral, leaving vehicle without power.will reengage within a few seconds.
Locked torque converter seems to disengage when going down hill. Also, speed control cannot control speed of car going down any slight hill.seems to be not locked up, etc.cannot use engine compression, etc, to slow vehicle.cruise control usis useless on any type of downgrade!is this a design flaw or can it be repaired?vehicle is a leased car through wheels, inc.thank you.
Vehicle design allows for the pcm to maintain the same rpm as if the transmission were in 3rd gear with the torque converter locked, this does not allow for deceleration when foot is off accelerator causing wear of braking components and extended stopping distances which are unpredictable.
Vehicle experiences transmission problems.
Seat belt failed.yh
The failure of the five point harness (maker: costco, model: 20448bng, made: 03-03-00) fails in the regard that the chest clip is easily slid down by the child enabling them to free their arms.this creates enough slack in the straps that they can conceivably free their legs from the restraint and, indeed, their enire body.
The airbags and shoulder harness both failed in a front end collision at highway speed resulting in injuries to the driver.*la
Consumer states that the vehicle would accelerate while in park and would lurch forward when shifted into drive. The dealer has not been able to correct or duplicate the problem. Nlmdealer reprogram the engine processor, however the problem still exist. Consumer also states the seat belt does not engage properly and consumer does not realize it, until leaning foward.
Consumer states that the driver's seat belt buckle would come unlatch intermittently.nlm
All four seatbelts will not click in/ retract and will not hold.
The rear seat belt retractors never worked well, but last month one failed completely. The manufacturer said the problem could not be fixed under warranty. I believe this is a manufacturing defect and should be covered by mercury.
All four seatbelts will not click in/ retract and will not hold.
Car handels poorly and goes all over the road at highway speeds, contacted the dealer, and was told nothing was wrong, contacted ford and was ignored. Now the seat belt in the drivers side rear seat isn't operating properly and is unsafe to use.is there a recall on this vehicle?
Rear passenger seat belt is stuck, it always gets stuck, and now it can't be used at all.
Consumer is 6' tall and the adjusting seatis not adjusting properly. Dealership says there is nothing they can do about the driver's seat not going up.

In 1998 i purchased a new mercury sable.stopping distance has been inadequate since new.returned to dealer 3 times, checked and stated everything was fine. In panic stops it feels as if only the rear wheels are braking.now, after 95,000 miles i have changed the rear brake pads 3 times and rear rotors once, but the original front pads are still on the car - just now needing replacement.front rotors excellent - no outer ridge.obviously, front brakes are not working effectively - normally front brakes provide about 60& of braking power.on november 19 i rear-ended another car in a chain-reaction panic stop.body damage is now repaired, but i hesitate to put it back in service without determining and repairing the brake problem that has existed since the car was new.i wrote ford about the problem years ago but received no answer.the service manager at the dealership has no record that i ever complained about inadequate braking.car was checked at brakemasters, but they could find nothing wrong.with millions of sables and tauruses built by ford, i can't believe i have the only car with this problem.i wonder how many of these cars have been involved in rear-end collisions with the owners never realizing that they had a braking problem?
Consumer heard grinding sound from the rear & took vehicle to the dealer. Rotors, and brake shoes and pads were replaced. However, problem occurred again on 10-aug-1999. It was taken to the same dealer, and he replaced alot of parts.as of 10-apr-2000, vehicle is at the dealer's again.dealer couldn't find cause of problem.brakes are still locking up.
While exiting ramp from a highway onto a main street, the explorer in front of us stopped before entering the main street.we were driving slowly when we tried to stop behind the other vehicle.my husband put his foot on the brake and it went to the floor.he continued a number of times, but could not stop or even slow down.we knew we would hit the vehicle in front of us, which prevented our car from going onto the main street of traffic.from trying to stop many times, my husband suffered a siatica injury, which he currently being treated by an orthopedist, chiropracter, physical therapist and primary care doctor.

I hit sand that is on the road to help you from sliding on black ice,but in my case it made my car go sliding and i hit curb on right side of me,which knocked my hands off steering wheel.by the time i had my hands back on the wheel and braking i was on left side of road.at this point i was off the road and on the mud, which my brakes didn't do me any good i just keep going up and over into the canyon where i went down about 15-20 where i hit an oak tree head on.the back of my car went up in the air and went side ways slammed down on the drivers side of car.during all this neither of the air bags deployed.i received 31 stitches in face and separated ribs and bruised wrest and bumps and bruises.
Brakes have been replaced 3 times due to premature failure. Brakes usually only last about 4-5months.the same conditions and noise reoccured.

The brake had failed twice.
While driving on highway, took an exit, applied brakes and brakes didn't hold.

When vehicle is in parkor foot is taking of gas pedal to brake, it will accelerate.has to apply a lot of pressure to brakes to stop vehicle. This causes brakes and rotors to warp. Replaced part; however, problem reoccurred.
My car made a low roaring noise from the rear end after about 3 months, since the first incident didn't occur again for a few weeks i didn't worry about it, however, after i had it for about 6 months the noise got worse and i was told i needed new brake pads, these were installed the same day, a few weeks later the same noise occurred again and this time i was told i needed new tie rod ends, these were installed that day, then it was my brake pads later it was the rotors, brake pads and shoes, i still have the noise in the rear of the car and now my brakes are still not right, i came down a hill last week and when i hit my brakes there were none, the dealer is saying it is the fact that i drive a lotford motor co is saying they aren't responsibleand bud shell is saying it is my fault can you help me i have had this car in the shop for this same problem about 10 times since sept 1999 i am afraid that my brakes will fail me again in a more dangerous situation than the last time.
The problem was identical in both instances, the rear calipers on those two occasions failed to fully release resulting in rapid and premature pad wear.on both occassions the problem was not noticable until there was metal to metal contact. At that point the failure caused extreme heat to be generated to the point of scorching thewheel . The shop that did the last repair , they are very good at what they do, checked the front brakes and the only work done was to machine the the rotors to eliminate a slight shimmy. I am very easy on my car and that i did not need front pads at 75000 mi seems to indicate so.
While traveling on highway and without prior warning vehicle will shake while applyingbrakes. Also, motor mounts were defective.
Spring clip forrear brake pads has snapped and disconnected during operation ofvehicle twice. This problem has occurred with 17,000 and 19,000 miles on the vehicle.dealership has been unable to effectively remedy the problem.please provide any additional information / documentation.
I rotate tires every 6000 mi.during rotation i inspect brake pads for wear.at 18000 mi i found excessive wear on rear pads, to the point that they needed to be replaced fairly soon.i took the car to the dealer for replacement under warranty.they advised that thos wear was "normal" and was not covered under warranty.that's nonsense.i've never had a car that needed rear pad replacement at lesss than 50000 mi.no professionls i spoke with thought this was "normal" wear.this is made worse by the fact that, when the car was new, i had brought it in for correction of brake vibration.the dealer machined the rotors and the tech said he "didn't like the looks of the rear pads so he replaced them."that's at 1500 mi.which means the replacment set only lasted 16500 mi.the owner service guide only says to inspect front and rear brakes at 30000 mi.if i had waited to 30000 mi i would have had at least rotor failure and might have had brake seizure, causing accident/injury.dealer contacted ford motor co rep who said it was normal wear and would not be covered under warranty.i personally replaced rear pads with after-market life-of-the-car-warranty premium-grade pads because i won't pay ford for another set of fast-wearing pads.i kept the original pads for nhtsa inspection, if desired.
4brake rotors have been replaced 3 times because they overheated/warped and were out of round. Cause unknown.consumer claims brake must be applied constantly while driving.
My brake line[metal],rusted completely through.1.no indication of brake failure.2.several of my family members drove my car to the grocery store, thankfully this is where the brakes gave out.3.mercury dealership replaced line for about $275.

Stopping at intersection with brakes applied, engine began throttling and caused racing and subsequent collision with another vehicle in front.standing on the brakes did not control the car and disengaging the transmission into "n" left the engine still racing!
Engine increases rpm in park or neutral without accelerator being pressed. This condition is very dangerous because if you don't notice the engine is increasing in rpm, and you place the shift lever in drive, the car leaps forward.

On february 14, 2006 as i drove up to my neighbor's garage door, my 1998mercury sable wagon had 'a mind of it's own'. It would not respond to the brake but accelerated 'on it's own' causing me to go through the door and hit the side brick wall of the garage. The insurance company totaled the car. Again braked hard with no response. The cabin air filter equipment leaks rainwater into the vehicle on the passenger side.this creates an excessive amount of moisture in the vehicle, hence causing excessive fogging of the window glass, obstructing the driver's view of the road, presenting the opportunity for collision due to reduced visibility.
Front windshield would fogged up first, and then unfogged when usingdefogger, which could lead to a vehicle crash due to poor visibility.
