Freeze out plugs had to be replaced and system flushed.new coolant was added and it is already turning brown again.ford did do the work for free, but told me i was on my own if it occured again.have learned through various people that the same thing is happening to their sable and taurus cars.transmission has also had to repaired at a cost to me of $1750.00.when you come to a stop the car will then not go forward.you have to press in on the gas and make it lunge forward, sometimes causing the tires to "burn rubber" !we brought this problem to the service department three years ago andeach time we took thecar in the service staff informed us that there was no problem.on last visit is when the coolant problem was discoverd.was told that our car had "cancer"and should get rid of it, but not at their dealership.the problem with the transmission was a forward engagement piston.the company that made the repair had three other sables in the shop with the exact same problem - each with no support from ford.each were paying $1750.00.help!!!

Fuel shut-off switch tripped, shuting down the car on the highway after i went over a very small bump.

Car stalled at traffic light and had to be towed. Upon inspection by a mechanic, it was noted that the wires leading from the fuel pump had become frayed due to rubbing against the pump housing itself. A new pump was ordered from the ford dealer and the new pump was noted to have a thick protective sleeve around the wires to prevent them from fraying. The bare wires on my pump could easily cause a spark and explosion so i wrote to ford to apprise them of the situation. I heard from them about a week later and they basically told me to get lost, and that since i did not bring my car to a ford dealership for repair that i was out of luck and that they would not reimburse me. I also suggested they recall the part to prevent injury due to possible explosion due to this defective fuel pump design, but again they were not interested in hearing from me. Needless to say i will never buy another ford product again.

At highway speed, fuel pump failed, blew a fuse; the motor stopped.

Wire connecting fuel pump was without sleeve and wire was burnt almost into which could have led to an explosion costing me my life. I have the fuel pump in my possession that was removed. Just bought a mercury sable 1996. After driving this vehical for about 10 miles, the transmission began to slip badly. It began with having trouble accelerating from a complete stop. Luckily i was driving in a rural area with few stops and little traffic. By the time i stopped at the 3 stop sign. The transmission would no longer engage into 1st or 2nd gear. Never got into 4th gear. This vehicle has been grossly unreliable, this is certainly a lemon.i need your assistance or suggestion with these safety discrepancies.thanks. No safety defects listed in the summary.

I have a number of worries with my vehicle.the following are: when playing the radio/tape deck, you hear a loud buzzing noise coming through the speakers even if the radio is turned down; when steering from left to right you'll hear a cranking noise coming from the front end of car; car does not absorb bumps at all, it rocks, makes knocking noise coming from somewhere near wheels; when driving on highway at a speed of about 50-70 mph, car will sway, like a wind is blowing it away; feul sensor will float, you can not count on it to tell you how much gas you have; trunk hood flips up in the air so fast and hard, i have stunted my fingers before on it; the doors on the car have a sharp edge to it, if you don't stand back when opening the door, it can gash your leg; wind shield are a blind spot, to long, wipers are so strong they vibrate the car, unusually strong; back window on left side (passenger) will not roll up, or roll down sometimes; assembly of light moldings/fixtures in back of car are off(not evenly lined up), so is the leveling of trunk lid; car jumps when starting it up, like it's ready to pull off, even when your foot is on the brake; when moving the gears the car makes a knocking noise, and jumps also; brake light comes on and goes off at times; car loses power at times, even after the transmission was replaced in february, 2001; keyless alarm system is sensitive, sometimes a inconvience, if you pick keys up and touch the panic, or trunk release button it can be set off in the house, behind a brick wall.

Transmission has not worked properly since consumer purchased automobile. He had taken automobile back to the dealer for transmission repairs five times.transmission shifts improperly and bangs in to gear in certain down shift circumstance. The transmission dealer replaced a switch and adjusted two bands.

Car is a 1996 mercury sable, vin [xxx], with a defective transmission.car would lunge and jerk as car would slow and then re-accelerate (such as going into and out of a curve in town, or approachinga red light that changed to green before the car completely stopped.)car was first worked on 9/9/1999, at which time the car had 28,156 miles on it.the dealer replaced a sensor under warranty.the symptoms again started occurring about a year later.when serviced on 5/15/2001, the dealer could not find the source of the problem.finally, the transmission failed in april 2002.the transmission was replaced 4/24/2002 with less than 47,000 miles on the car.the car had an extended warranty from ford.at the time of the failure, the warranty had expired for time (greater than 5 years) but not mileage.however, the car was covered by the warranty (time and mileage) during both the september 1999 and may 2001 services.had the fault been properly diagnosed at either time while still under warranty, my contention is that the transmission would not have failed.i currently have the transmission.the gearing system has notches in the teeth.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The battery was inexplicably drained 6 weeks after we purchased the car.two days ago, the car slipped into neutral without warning whenever i turned or slowed down.now, it slips into neutral all of the time.

The vehicle was parked and with no warning rolled forward.the dealer was notified.the vehicle was stopped and the gear shift was in park.the consumer exited the vehicle, and when hereturned to the vehicle, it started to roll down the slope of the roadway.the consumer ran after the vehicle and was able to get it under control.*scc

Coolant turned to a rusty sluggy mixture.

I have a mercury sable 1996, manufactured in 9/95. Vin number [xxx]. My car has 58,000 miles and the transmission is almost gone. I was informed that there is a recall on the transmissions for this car and i am looking for the necessary information to take with me to dealer for replacement. I have also noticed that my car jerksforward when am taking off from a stopped position. I have done all that i can to take care of this car but nothing i do has worked. There are so many complaints and recalls on this car and i really need help with my research to present to the dealer when i take this car in for repairs again. A website if there is one to help find my vin #. Any recall information. Help! *nlminformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Vehicle rolled backwards down a hill and the parking brakes were not on. Once the vehicle was finished rolling down the hill, the vehicle ran into a pole.

When stopping at a light and taking off again the car takes a few seconds to move. When it does move, vehicle jerks forward hard enough to cause whiplash. Dealer says the vehicle needs a new transmission.

A clutch plate within transmission broke in 3 places. Transmission needs to be replaced.but, manufacturer is not providing or selling new transmission because it keeps failing.

During accelleration from stop to make left turn, transmission dissengaged.rear bearing failure caused dissintegration of transmission.dealer suspected faulty components/assembly but was unwilling to cover under warrantee which expired only 5000 miles earlier.contacted manufacturer who claimed no responsibility.

While pulling from a parking space, a piece of metal broke off on the inside of the transmission causing the gears to lock up and also the transfer case crack from the inside out. Dealer has been contacted, complete transmission rebuilt.

While driving transmission slips out of gearand goes into neutral. This problem becomes more pronounced when making a turn or slowing down.

Afterputting vehicle in park it rolled forward. Had to apply brakes for vehicle to stop. Vehichle was not on a hill.

When pulling onto a ramptransmission does not pick up whenaccelerator is applied.this is an intermittent problem.dealer has been contacted.

Transmission leaked fluid. Found crack in housing, caused by differential breaking down internally. Vehicle is just past 36,000 mile warranty. 2 days of labor and $1600 estimated repair for differential and transmission housing. Need to check if related to current "roll pin" transmission safety recall for 1996 sable.

Dealer replaced transmission. , then changed computer settings, fuel mileage cutby 1/3.

I was traveling on a highway with cruise control set at 65. There was a sudden high pitched whirring sound. I tapped the brake to disengage the cruise control. When i accelerated, there was no gear. I pulled to the side of the road and determined that i could not go forward or backward, or use any gear. I was towed 26 miles to the nearest dealership. 75% of the miles are hiway miles. There was no prior warning or malfunction.

Cracked tranmission case, pin came out of gear.

Intermittently the vehicle would not go into drive .ultimately vehicle would not go into gear.the manufacturer has paid half the cost of the repair.

Erratically the transmission does not shift into gear.the dealer has been notified.

Premature transmission failure. *dsh

Transmission exhibits a shudder. Common practice on other similar vehicles. It also sticks when put into gear.

Well, the transmission i have, im on my second one (they sorta replaced/rebuilt my old one) is no different than the old one.i mean at least it uses the 2nd gear, which the other one never did.now i thought this was an isolated incident until i asked around.two of my friends have sable's in their families, one is a '96 like mine, the other a '97 and both of their cars have had serious transmission troubles.my friend's '96 doesnt even work anymore, hes rather angry about that and my other friends '97 is shaky.im worried now because im out of warranty, i only have a little over 20k on my car, i drive it really nicely, this shouldnt have happened.i feel its my duty to tell you guys i believe this should be recalled, someone will get seriously hurt from this one day im sure, but im sure it would take 50+ people before anyone does anything and that isnt going to happen, so im left with this great car and a terrible transmission.if you think you could get a recall going on these transmissions, or you need any info, call me before 1am cdt please at 972-964-1713

Transmission will not shift into gear. Cause unknown. Please describe.

(1) car shifts hard during acceleration and deceleration.speedometer does not work or bounces up, then down.check engine light comes on. (2) while driving at normal road speeds the transmission will switch to low gear causing sudden throw of driver inside car and at times when trying to accelerate there is a long delay in power to engine then sudden acceleration. (3) replaced cam sensor and other sensor three times and always fails again.

Automatic transmission burnt up after 2 mile trip

Owner received recall notice, contacted dealer and was told the parts were unavailable.recall #96v176000.

Problem started when shifting from park to drive, car would lurch forward unless you had brake pedal pushed down as hard as you could. Then while leaving a stop light car would hesitate then pick up speed very slowly, finally the car will not go into reverse. Transmission shop said that transmission had to be replaced. $1800.00 !!

Power steering components emitting a groaning noise. Vehicle taken to the dealer for service regarding this problem five times, but problem was not resolved. Also, transmission roughly downshifts in first gear, resulting in excessive jerking.

The transmission will shifts into neutral when the vehicle is in drive in a stopped position.in order to get it back into drive, the car has to be put in park and reshifted into drive again.

The transmission gave out, original transmission replaced at 50,000 miles. *cj

While shifting from "drive" to "reverse" in a parking lot, the transmission "just fell apart" according to the service manager at whitten lincoln/mercury in richmond, va.i can only imagine what might have happened had the vehicle been moving down the highway when the transmission "fell apart".please note the transmission underwent repair for a "park pawl" defect a year earlier and had the regular transmission service only a few months before the failure.

High idle when moving from park to drive, causing vehicle to lurch forward, and it will also travel couple feet if foot is not on brakes hard.manufacturer issued atsb, but it does not correct defect.consumer states that this failure caused the liquid filled mounts to fail which also caused exhaust leak at manifold, the tsb number is 97-7-1, which states the pcm needed replaced due to an incorrect software identification block.drive and serpentine belts failed.

Recall campaign 96v176000 was issued.when engaging the vehicle into park it beganto roll.however, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.the vehicle does not enage in park and will not pass inspection.*tc

Automatic transmission gearbroke into the transmission system which almost caused loss of vehicle control.please provide further information.

The check engine light came on so the car was taken to the dealer to check it out on november of 1998.the dealer said it was a bad shift solinoid that would not effectthe car very much but, should be replaced sometimes. On feb. 4, the vehicle would not start so it was towed to a local garage, they said that it needed to go to a dealer because they didn't have the proper computer to diagnose the problem.the carwas then towed to bob hastings ford, east rochester ny, where they found that a fuel sensor was misssing.i contend that the sensor was never there to start with but, having no way to prove it could not get them to warranty it.two weeks later the transmission began to slip so i drove it to empire transmission, webster ny, where i was told i needed to have the transmission rebuilt. I contacted ford to see if they would cover part of the work, but i was told that since i didn't have an extended service plan there was nothing they could do.i think this is premature failure for a transmission not used for towing or off road.

Transmission jumped out of gear, causing injury to consumer.

Seat belt latch came apart.

While driving at 35 mph, the consumer'svehicle hit another vehicle on the side. The air bags did not deploy and the passenger's side seat belt did not restrain the passenger. The consumer was inquiring about the status of the original complaint. *ph

The seat belts on both sides of the front seat, driver's side and passenger's side became inoperable at approximately 50000 miles.we didn't notice that they were inoperable, only that the belts would catch in the door when we shut the door.after a while, after the warranty ran out, we realized that the reason that the belts were getting caught in the door was because they were not retracting properly.we took the car to the dealer, walser lincoln-mercury at the above address.the seat belts on both sides were replaced on 1/8/02.the passenger seat is used for less than half of the miles driven.i would not be surprised if one of the belts failed but don't think that both belts should fail.that seems like a manufacturing defect is likely.

Rear center seat belt will not return/retract.*mjs

Whenvehicle came to rest in a ditchdriver noticed that rear center seat belt did not restrain css properly, it slid down betweenfront and rear seats.

Two boxes (about 30-40 lbs each) in trunk slid forward upon hard, emergency braking from about 25 mph.boxes slammed into right rear fold down seat back, causing seat back to open.boxes entered into right rear seating area.toddler in child seat on left rear side.no injuries.

The outer door handles become inoperable when the vehicle is left in the rain.condition varies from totally inoperable to difficult to open. The vehicle opens easily from the inside.it has also happened once on the front left door.the dealer never heard of that happening before.if you slam the door real hard it fixes itself. When the condition goes away the doors open like new again until another rain.

The steel brake lines to the rear breaks rusted and my breaks failed. I have looked at three other cars of the same type and tey have the same problem. This could kill someone.

I have had this car for one year and one half. I bought it from ray hudson chevrolet in la crosse ,wis. I had the car two weeks and the transmission had to be replaced. Two weeks after the front and back brakes had to be replaced. This was at the dealers exspense. I had to have a wheel bearing replaced and now after a year and 1/2 i have to replace the whole motor.

Consumer complained abouta brake problem.when driving through the rain warning dash lights come on, and the vehicle stalled.

In the rain driving 35 mph the vehicle's defective abs system malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance which almost caused an accident.

Driving car to get boyfriend, weather rainy, rd slick/wet, cadillac making left turn, applied brakes (abs), car skidded on rd, lost control of car.

Vehicle caught on fire while parked in the garage.consumer states abs light was coming the day vehicle was purchasd and dealer admtted that it was on but did not say anything, possible cause was fan from abs light.

Abs system failed causing light to illiminate 2 repairs due to faulty diagnosis on 1st visit. Yh

While traveling 50mph driver appliedbrakes, butpedal went to floor andvehicle did not slow down or stop, eventually coming to rest in a ditch. Consumer states 3 people were injured in accident.

Abs brakes;when applied brakes lost effectiveness, pedal went to the floor , vehicle went into open throttle position,12:00 o'clock position, speed 35mp lost control, resulting in an accident.

Brakes failed.hard pressure on brake pedal resulted in no braking from a speed of 25mph.car was stopped when it hit a house.damage appears total. Abs brakes have failed in two earlier incidents: one required about $800 of repairs and some property damage.car was purchased from ford motor company after the first owner returned the vehicle for brake problems ford certified that the brakes had been repaired to "new" condition.

Brake system warning lamp remains illuminated continuously. Vehicle not included in recall 96v016000.please give any further details.

When car is put on a standard tire shop lift the rear higth sensing valve goes past its limit which allows constant pressure to be applied to rear brakes, and can lead to brake failure in less than 400 miles.

Driver noticed pulsation/vibration when applying the brakes at highway speed. Dealer informed theowner that the front rotors were so badly warped that had to be replaced.

Rotors of the car continue to warp and i have spoken to many repair shops and they have told me this is a common problem.with the rotors warpingthis could make braking safely difficult or impossible.

Power steering rack gear assembly failed.

Dt:contact states the body of the car corroded from inside out, where the frame bolts were located. Contact called a ford dealer, who stated there wasno a recall on this vehicle.

I am very concerned about the failure of the rear submounts in my car. I purchased a premium extended service plan with the car and i am told these components are not covered because they are part of the " structure " of the car and are a safety hazard should they fail. In fact the components do not even appear on the maintenance schedule for my car!

Roof molding failed.

Sunvisor can not be utilized on the side windows due to the curvature of the roof.

The cup holder releases cup whenevercoming to a stop. Ford customer service lucretia-- and supervisor ester-- state there is nothing they can do under ford policy. Consumer looked at the 97 and 98 mercury sables, and the console cup holders are newly designed so they would not have the problem.

The passenger door could not be opened from the outside.

Anytime the weather gets under 32 degrees outside door handles freeze up. The dealer has tried to correct this problem four times. Door handles continue to freeze up, replacement of the inner door switch mechanism necessary to complete repair, design of the plunger that is metal results in freezing, replacement of the plunger with plasticrectified situation.

No summary listed for this vehicle.

The vehicle will shut down without prior warning.and the slidding door will unexpectly open while traveling.

Outside door handles failed. Also, windows steam up when defroster is first strated, cannot see outside of window.

The door panels have been a problem on this vehicle since my ownership of the car. I keep taking it back to the dealership where i have my car serviced and they keep charging me for putting them back together. The never seem to last longer than 6 months.

The curved metal extension at the outer end of the bottom of the front doors protrudes too far out and makes closing the doors very dangerous when it comes to having your body and leg clear of this protrusion. My wife's leg was seriously gauged last night by this protrusion. The combination of this curved heavy metal protruded edge on the mercury sable wagon is made more dangerous as far as passenger safety goes as this car is also low to the ground. I think others should be made aware of the flaw in design of these passenger doors.

This problem has happened over and over again. They fix it and it still keeps on breaking down. Driver doorwon't lock, roof light stays on, panel light indicating all doors are open stays lit. Then it goes off and then on. Its a continous thing that happens. Yesterday. 11-28-01 it would not start. I bought a new battery and sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't. Do i qualify to get a loaner vehicle until they find out what is wrong with it. They don't seem to have any answers yet. My vehicle is paid offsince of last month. Erlinda l. Picazo

When it rains the outside door handles fail.this only happens when it rains. This problem doesn't allow the consumer to get into the vehicle when it rains. Dealer has been contacted.

Driver and passenger door handles defective.

Design of door has a sharp point which gashed consumer's leg.consumer is researching for other incidents to bring forward to manufacturer.

Consumer complains that upon opening door right sharp corner edge of door strikes shin.

This poroblem affectsall 1996through1999 mercury sables &ford tauruses.it is not advertised nor listed in equipment specifications on the msrp.the trunk lid is not manufactured with galvanized steel .it was manufactured with either plastic or aluminum.the only way i found out about thi s was when i attemptedto put my magnetic c.b. Antennaon the trunk. The antenna wouldn't attach to the trunk.i tried the magnet on allsable and tauruses from '96 through 99,and the same thing happened. I tried the magnet oncontours, mystiques, escorts, ford crown vic's,grand marqui's,lincolns and the magnetic antenna worked.i seriously think the government should do something about this problem.i believe if these automobiles areinvolved in a rear end collisionit wouldcause greater injuries than if the vehicle was manufactured with steel.i will apprecite hearing from you agencysince the person i spoke with on the phone said i should contact you.thank you very much, james h. Lane.

The contact owns a 1996 mercury sable. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance and the mechanic discovered that the engine cradle and the subframe were severely rusted and corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000.

Due to design the engine serpentine belt and pulleys failed while driving in water, the splash shields are not adequate.

This did not show up until around the summer of '97,when i bought the car. This is because,it only happens when the car has sat in sun for awhile. Then on the road at around 60mpr you get this high whistle, which seems to come from somewhere on the passenger side outside around the engine area. The noise varies depending on the speed(seems to stop under 55) and variations in the roadway. My own guess is that something expands in the heat of the sun and when air at a certain speed comes in contact it either vibrates or it's the air going through it. The dealer has looked, guessed it was a missing screw just below the windsheld(wrong!) and gave up.this may not sound like a safety hazzard but it is very distracting after several miles.and like i said it only seems to happen in the hot sun. Would appreciate any help you have to offer. It's driving my wife crazy.thank you

While drivingengine collapsed due to rusting. This caused the frame to break.also, when the engine collapsed the ball joints broke, causing the tires to disengage from the vehicle.

- the contact has a 1996 mercury sable with an odometer reading of 60000 miles; the subframewas rusted. The contact heard a cracking noise when making left turn at5 mph under dry conditions.when the contact looked under the car he found that the subframerusted off of the vehicle.this failure is addressed under recall 98v323000 frame and members. The contact called the manufacturer, and was told that the car was too old for them to take any action.the contact said that he would have pictures and a repair order.updated 02/22/07.

A bolt holding the right front subframe came ripped away from its bracket. It caused the engine to pull to the right and ripped a vaccum line from the brake distribution assembly located on the firewall. I lost the power assist for the brakes and fortunately it happened at a slow speed.it cost me approximately $315.00 to have the problem fixed.

The contact owns a 1996 mercury sable. While driving at approximately 5 mph the contact heard a popping sound coming from the under the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic. The mechanic stated therear lower subframe was fractured due to corrosion and could detach from the vehicle. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 98v323000 (structure:frame and members) that may be related to the failure but did not include 1996 models. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving various speeds, the left front wheel stabilizer arm wobbled from side to side.the vehicle was inspected by an independent repair shop and it was determined, the front undercarriage and engine mounts were rusted.the vehicle was exposed to extreme winter weather and corrosive road salts.the repair shop concluded that due to the extensive corrosion, the problem could not be corrected.the manufacturer was not alerted.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving various speeds, the steering wheel was difficult to turn.the vehicle was inspected by an independent repair shop who determined the engine mount and carriage frame rusted which caused the engine to slip from the mount.the vehicle was exposed to extreme winter weather and road salts.the repair shop concluded that a piece of steel needed to be added to each side of the engine mount to correct the problem.the manufacturer was not alerted.

The sub frame on my son's 96 mercury sable suddenly broke loose and nearly caused him a serious accident. The steerinmg of the vehicle became very eratic and as such lost control of the vehicle. Luckily no one was hurt.the area where the frame attaches to the body had literaly rusted away and the subfram had shifted.i checked the complaint databases and found ford had a recall on sables and tauruses for subframe failures from 89 to the 95 model in saltbelt states. The same type of failures listed in the recall informatioin are also endemic to the 96 model. Other than the subframe failure the car was in excellent shape and well maintained. The major concern i have is how many other 96' sable and tauruses are still on the roads in the saltbelt states with the potential for a very serious and life threatening accident to occur due to this defect. I seriously believe that ford or some governmental agency should require warnings to be issued to owners of these cars to have them inspected before people who are driving these cars find themselves in a serious accident.

Upon starting the vehicle, it accelerated at a high speed whenthe gear was placed in reverse. When this occurred, the vehicle lost steering power assist and brakes.the vehicle stopped when it hit an object. The driver then put vehicle into drive and turned the ignition off, but the vehicle accelerated forward. The vehicle then made several turns before stopping again. This failure occurred once before. The cause of the failure was undetermined.

Over the past several months i have been noticing that my engine "revs" as i try to stop.the problem is intermitent but seems to be occurring more often. I had the dealer check it out-the 1st time i believe they just did a test drive and said they could find nothing wrong. About 1 1/2 months later it happened again and i bumped into a security gate at work. As i approached the closed gate i had my foot on the brake as i "eased" up to the card reader to open the gate, all of a sudden the engine started to rev and car inched forward as i tried to apply more brake effort. After a few seconds the idle returned to normal. I took the car back to the dealer 2 days later and paid for a computer diagnostic-again nothing was found and i was told it could be almost anything, and they had no suggestions on what to do. They told me they could replace "random" parts but it would cost alot of money to do so. I am not positive but this happened to me atleast 4 times. The car revs for a few seconds as i brake to stop and then returns to normal idle.

Idle races and does not come down once foot is taken off accelerator.

Wheel well splash shields are loose and vibrate.

There was a noise similar to that of a separating belt in the tire coming from the left front wheel.the wheel was removed for inspection.we discovered that the chrome was peeling from the back of the wheel and was rubbing against the caliper when the wheel rotated.upon removing the loose chrome, the back of the aluminum wheel was exposed.there was considerable corrosion on the back side of the aluminum spokes.this car has had very limited exposure to salt/winter conditions and this wheel is badly corroded.by the time this car accumulates 80k-100k miles the wheel spokes will have failed.i plan to contact the dealer and inform them of this situation.
