Consumer states vehicle experienced alternator wire problems and charging system problems.

Ignition lock set failed.

Consumer was driving on highway, vehicle slowed down/car stalled . Please describe .

Since the day the car was bought, the windshield wipers will turn off unexpectedly...as if there is a short.they will restart only if they are manually assisted.non-related, the car will stop dead and will not restart for a minimum of 30 min.this happens every summer when the temperature is above 95 f and the car has driven 100 consecutive miles.this is usually a highway driving situation and has often left my wife and children stranded in the middle of the highway.

Vehicle stalls intermittently at any speed. Has been to dealer numerous times, check engine light comes on a lot.

I first reported this to ford and to the nhtsa after a trip in august 1999 when my car stalled numerous times during a motor trip in in very hot whether.it was a miracle that we escaped injury.last week i towed my small boat with the car in mild weather and after about 75 miles the car stalled again and we were again lucky to avoid an accident.i read an article in the august 2001 newspaper that ford had agreed to replace the faulty ignition part in cars where it had failed but ford denied this when i called them. What is going on?i am afraid to drive this car in hot weather or to tow my boat with it or to use it in conditions which will cause high engine heat.if i don't get help soon i must get rid of my car.

My car stalls at any speed in hot weather after driving over 20-25 miles on the highway or when driving around town doing errands involving several stops and starts.the car has stalled at dangerous imtersections requiring the assistance of good samaritans to push the car to a safer location, out of harm's way.each time the car stalls, i have to wait at least 30 minutes before it will start up again, so i can continue driving.i have had my car towed on 2 occasions to a service station, but the mechanic could not diagnose the reason for these stalling episodes.what can i do?

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Consumer has been complaining of the vehicle stalling and there has not been a fix for it yet.there is a report that suggests the problem is likely to be with the ignition device, the tfi(thick film ignition) module mounted on the distributor.the vehicle was brought in to the service department and nothing was found to be wrong.*jg

Dt*:the contact stated while driving at various speeds the engine stalls without warning.this occurs more often in warmer weather.the vehicle restarts only after cooling off for at least 30 minutes.it has been inspected on several occasions; however the problem could not be duplicated.after researching the problems with this vehicle the contact believes the pfi ignition module is over heating, causing the stalling.

Consumer states that vehicle stalls at any speed. Took to dealer and dealer stated the ignition module was defected. Dealer stated there is no fix. Please provide any further information.ts

Ignition will not engage upon starting. Due to system falling apart.

Engine head gasket is leaking, causing vehicle to idle really rough.in addition, replaced defective motor mounts/ rebuilt transmission, and replaced defective starter.

While driving or parking vehicle, it would either stall or die out for no reason; will not start right away; when driving occurs at various speeds. Had to have vehicle towed home when stalled last time. Have not taken to dealer yet.the cause for the vehicle's stalling was found to be fuel pump failure.the starter also failed.the passenger side window was fixed three times but the problem sitll continues.the consumer could not properly install a new child seat.

Bad/loose connection in starter wire prevented starter from operating, solenoid electrical connector replaced to solve this problem.mjs

The contact owns a 1994 mercury sable. While driving various speeds or idling, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle was able to restart after several attempts. The failure occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The key insert does not align, have had 2 transmissions in 5 years. (i know to check my fluids) new engine, & the paint is awful. Engine, motor, gas, gasps and jerks with me. Have had motor mounts replaced, nothing helps. Heater coil(?) went out, i have no heat now. We had to bypass. The rest i have not been able to afford to repair. I hate this car. I am worried everytime i get in it that my mother and i are not going to get home. I have had the car towed so many times, the man who does the towing knows me and my car on sight. I will not go more than 30 miles fromt he house. My mechanic even hates the car. I call him an angel, because he has kept it running.

While traveling at any time the vehicle overheats.gauge runs high. Please provide further informaton.

I have experinced overheating w/ my car from the time of purchase the engine cooling system was inspected and showed it was fine now i have a blown head gasket at 90,000 miles after pampering the car for a year and a half. One day i was driving and at a stop light the car stalled , i restarted and a blue smoke came out of the rear after haveing a mechanic look into it , he dtermined it was the head gasket.

Since 2000, the car has broken down several times for the same reasons.we have just replaced the water pump and the radiator and now we have to come up with $800.00 to get the head gasket fixed.if in anyway please e-mail me back at [email protected] or call 757-854-4027

Consumer had transmission serviced at 31,000 miles.9 months later, consumer was backing car out of garage and couldn't shift gears. Took vehicle to dealer, and she was told that vehicle needed a new transmission. A/c main line failed.radiator failed.rack and pinion steering failed.

Mechanics advise as follows:motor mount fails because too much torque is placed on it by engine;power steering hose ruptured because it rubs against steering rack; replacement hose only available from ford which redesigned hose to avoid rubbing on steering rack;head gasket fails because only 6 bolts hold engine head to engine block, ford redesigned head gasket to make it thicker;radiator cracks because it is manufactured out of plastic and is not repairable. Ford responds that none of the foregoing are its problem; ford stated that only rear motor mounts are covered by a nhtsa recall ; ford states that it extended warranty on head gasket only up to 60,000 miles;ford states that power steering hose is not subject to nhtsa recall.

Radiator failed resulting in leakage, replacement leaked due to faulty radiator cap. Mjs

Recall notice not recieved for head gasket failure.

Engine mounts had to be replaced do to state inspectionford said my vihicle not part of recall #98v323000 parts failed to hold up

Both motor mounts are cracked on this vehicle. I have heard lot of other sable owners have had the same problem with lower mileage than my car.thank you.

I am a mercury sable 1994 owner.as i was driving to work today, i began to have engine trouble.i had the car towed to a nearby garage.i was informed later this morning that i had blown a head gasket.the garage suggested that i tow the car to a nearby ford dealer, novato ford.remembering that ford had issued a letter regarding head gaskets and before towing to the novato ford dealership, i decided to call the dealership.after i explained the situation, the service advisor said that he also remembered this "head gasket" situation and put me on hold.when he returned he informed me that since my mileage was over 100,000 (currently 105,693), i would not be eligible for the extended warranty coverage.i then called ford customer service 800 392-3673 and referenced the extended warranty coverage under service program, #98m01. Quoting the letter - the letter states, "ford motor company is providing extended warranty coverage under service program, #98m01, to owners of 1994 and 1995 taurus and sable and 1995 windstar vehicles equipped with a 3.8l fwd engine. Reason for this program: premature failure of the head gaskets may occur and may result in engine overheating or in extreme cases could cause engine failure if the overheat condition is ignored.the extended warranty coverage is ford motor company's commitment to customer satisfaction and we are taking this action as part of our ongoing efforts to maintain your confidence in our products."i was informed that there was nothing that could be done.i explained that i acquired the car in 1997 at 44,000 miles.upon receiving the june 1998 letter, i did go to my local hilltop ford dealership and asked them to check out the head gasket(s).i was told that they were fine.

The head gasket failed causing the vehicle to overheat, the consumer contacted the dealer and was told that the vehicle had been recalled and a notice was sent out, the consumer was never notified of this recall.nlm

Ford issued a notice, not a recall as i feel they should have done, because of the premature failure of the head gaskets. The failure could have resulted in a safety concern for my family if they failed at a time or place that would have been dangerous. In the notice ford said they would provide coverage no charge coverage for 5 years or 60,000 miles. No mention was made about "whichever comes first." it was a clear statement of 5 years or 60,000 miles. I feel ford is trying to take the easy & cheap way out and not acting in a responsible manner as a manufacturer should.

Consumer states due to an engineering flaw the head gasket and engine failed at 9000 miles.the dealership replaced the engine with a long block.however on the factory replaced engine, the head gasket has failed again.dealership has suggested that an engine replacement is the best choice.consumer has asked dealership and manufacturer to take responsibility for an engine which has failed twice. Dealership unwilling to accept responsibility. Consumer filed complaint with bureau of consumer protection agency.

According to recall 00m09 and a customer service representative, the consumer qualified for $4000 customer focus certificate toward the purchase of a new or leased lincoln/mercury, the consumer spoke with the service manager who stated that he did not qualify.

Engine head gasket blewout at 30,000 miles, causing oil to get into engine, and resulting in vehicle stalling.

Engine mount failure caused a clunking noise when vehicle was accelerated.

Motor mounts broke while driving , causingvehicleto jerk.vehicle has been repaired by private mechanic. Dealer has been notified.

Was taking vehicle off road & noticed the influcuation of heat. Had the thermostat changed & flucuation heat still existed. Took vehicle to lot to be sold & the mechanic informed owner the head gaskets had blown. The vehicle could not be sold.manufacturer informed owner the tsb on head gaskets had expired.

My 1994 mercury sable suddenly accererated to 60 mph while i was driving.the vehicle accelerated and slowed erratically.i tried braking but was unable to slow sufficiently. Iused the emergeny brake but still could not slow enough avoid hitting a phone pole. Three passengers were injured. I had new front brakes installed the day before and received an inspection sticker the day before.

Motor mounts broke. Yh

I have experienced numerous recent failures with this vehicle that i believe are due to defective design, materials, and workmanship by ford. Some of these can result in a serious accident if not addressed. I have learned that the head gasket, timing cover gasket, engine mounts, and a/c failures are quite common on this vehicle. This tends to support the need for an investigation by your office and subsequent recall of these vehicles. The cost to repair all of these items is approximately $3500. I have contacted ford who in turn offered me a mere $500. Towards the head gasket repair. Ford had instituted an "internal recall" on these head gaskets (essentially admitting that they are defective), but my vehicle is now not covered under this program. Please investigate and force a recall on these obviously defective vehicles. Please contact me if you need further information. Thank you, john maciel.

The head gasket failed, and the entire engine needed to be replaced.

The right front engine mount has failed on several occasions.i did not buy extended warranty coverage with this car.the first failed 90 days after purchase of the vehicle.i am now on the fourth failed mount.these are fluid filled and obviously not designed to handle the torque applied.they start by leaking and then follow with engine lift and bump during acceleration.all replacements have been purchased through napa auto parts dealers in my area. I have asked for a solid replacement, but have been informed they do not exist.

Motor mounts broke. Consumer tookvehicle torepair shop for a tire balance, anddealer noticed the motor mounts were broken. Specifically, the right front motor mount liquid-filled rubber boot was torn.both mounts replaced.*ml

I had the head gaskets fixed in march 2000, and there was a recall for that malfunction on this vehicle, i spoke with ford motor co. And told them that they should have warned me of possible engine failure resulting from the head gasket problem and ford motor should be liable for the engine failure and repair therefore.

Transmission suddenly refused to shift - would only go into reverse or first gear - required full rebuilt of transmission and torque converter - although maintained on schedule by mercury dealer.engine mounts discovered failed at this time - a constant problem with this type vehicle that previously ford would pay to repair but not now.poor quality vehicle.

Engin ehead gaskets are releasing water from the engine block. Manufcturer has been notified.

Head gasket failed, resulting in severe engine damage to crankshaft and bearings.

Head gasket failed prior to recall notice (97v-019). Mjs

Engine head gasket is leaking, causing vehicle to idle really rough.in addition, replaced defective motor mounts/ rebuilt transmission, and replaced defective starter.

Engine mounts do not provide enough support to hold engine, bolts prematurely break which causes engine to drop, engine mounts have been replaced twice. Consumer stated she sold the vehicle in oct, 2001 because of reocurring engine mount problems.

I have had other problems with this car feul pump replaced , new head put on car, transmission screen and filter replaced because of leakage, brakes replaced rotors turned, broken motor mount, rear axle loose. Squealing noise on passanger side when turning or going around a curve. The transmission on this car also i think has a problem it hesitates when youfirst crank up the car it won' t go it acts like you are in neutral for a few seconds then it goes. I have also had some type of collant ring around the timing chain replaced the engine would get hot and start smoking it smelled like anti-freeze . Most of the repair work has been done under the extended warrenty but this car does have problems.

Motor mounts are faulty. Also there is a problem with windshield wiper washer on vehicle.it does not work unless lights are on bright.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the head gaskets. While driving the vehicle at 45 mph the head gasket blew out. Dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle has a defective engine. There is a recall for the problem but it expired on sep/2002 and dealer will not honor the recall.*nlm

Engine blew due to a defective design of head gasket.please provide further information.

Prior to the recall oil and coolant mixed due to head gasket failure (00m09). Yh

Motor mounts and transmission mounts failed causing noise, prior to recall notice of the sub-frame mounts (26-feb-99) (98s36). Mjs

A broken engine mount caused erratic operationof vehicle.dealernotified. *ml

Transmission failed two times, engine mounts failed.

Car is leaking antifreeze, through engine block, causingengine to blow up.

Timing cover gasket and head gasket failed, resulting in coolant loss.

After the head gasket was replaced in 01-98, the crankshaft and radiator needed replacing due to the head gasket being replaced.in 02-98 the crankshaft was replaced along with the timing cover because of excessive wear.in 12-98 the head gasket was replaced due to a recall. The timing chain cover gasket was replaced at the following mileages-44832,45520,67205.according to the receipts given to me at the time, the transmission oil pan gasket was replaced twice under the same day.it is obvious that by doing that, they combined three different work orders into one.the next time it was replaced was at 71387.the crank was replaced at 45520 miles, the seals were replaced at 46942 , 67205, 68523 and 67205.ford motor company , through program #00m09 , is admitting a problem with the 3.8 l engine with regard to the head gasket.this program is allowing for a refund on out of pocket to the consumer for replacing the head gasket or a rebate on a new ford or mercury vehicle.i am not eligible for either of those because my extended warranty , which was purchased through ford, was bought with a $0 deductible.i feel i am being punished because of an option that was the most financially sound at the time.

Engine head gaskets have blown.the dealer has replaced the gaskets.

Recall repair on head gasket was denied, unit was not experiencing problems at the time of recall notice, however failed later and denied repair.*mjs

Failure of enginehead gasket led toengine overheating and failure.

Headgasket failed at 56000 miles. Dealer rebuilt engine, headgasket failed again at 33000 miles.

The engine mounts would make loud noises & would not stay in place. The front would vibrate. Can happen when the gears are being shifted. Took to dealer & informed by mechanic the engine mounts needed replacing.

While driving engine head gasket failed, causing engine to overheat. Vehicle was driven to garage for mechanic's inspection, mechanicmentioned head gasket leakeage and not properly operating. Problem still exists.

Headgasket blew out, causing vehicle to overheat.also, temperature gauge fluctuated between on/off.

There isn't any heat in the vehicle due to engine head gasket breakingand causingvehicle to overheat.

Motor was replaced in 04/00 due to bad head gaskets with 73,200 miles on original engine.heads failed again 12/02 with 43,000 miles on new motor.claim denied by ford due to no available financial assistance package availability. Ts

When i started the engine on about 5/1/01, it chugged and had a hard time starting.this lasted for about a week and a half.then, suddenly white smoke eminated from the exhaust as soon as i started the car on 5/8/01.my mechanic told me it was a blownhead gasket and this was later verbally confirmed by the ford/mercury dealership. Since the recall coverage expired on 4/8/01, i am told i can have it repaired for half price only by the ford/mercury dealership.i believe i should have it covered for the full amount since my car has so little mileage and since the head gasket blew so close to the coverage deadline (and since it appears this will be an ongoing problem i'll have to deal with every couple of years or so according to the ford/mercury dealership.i feel i've been sold a lemon and am extremely disatisfied with the service (or rather, lack thereof) provided by ford/mercury.the car has had problems ever since i bought it and the ford/mercury dealership was unable to effect repairs! i'd really prefer a cashier's check so i can take it to a reputable car repair establishment.thank you for your website.sincerely,[xxx] and [xxx]. Had the vehicle serviced by a local mechanic for heater problems and was told that it needed a new engine head gasket.it leaks air into the radiator or cooling system, and the water does circulate in order for the heater to work.contacted the dealer.

Received letter from ford vehicle service and programs dated june, 1998 about a premature head gasket failure to owners with my make and model: service program number 98mo1. The letter stated that the head gasket failure could cause engine overheating and engine failure. The program had a fix at no charge till dec. 31, 1998. I had some engine overheating problems that the dealer could find no cause for before the expiration of this program and now, five months after expiration, an engine failure as a result of the head gasket failure of which ford says i will just have to pay for: $1228! my complaint is that if this was a default ford admitted and was willing to repair then what about those of us that didn't have problems until after the expiration of their program? there was also a 5 yr. Or 60,000 miles limit on it, i am still in the 5 yr. But due to a highway commute of 100 miles per day, i am over the 60,000 mile perimeter that was set for the program. What can i do?

Engine gasket failure.

According to recall 00m09 and a customer service representative, the consumer qualified for $4000 customer focus certificate toward the purchase of a new or leased lincoln/mercury, the consumer spoke with the service manager who stated that he did not qualify.

Consumer was not notified of the recall related to the head gasket failure, additional repairs made prior to knowledge (alternator, thermostat, engine seals, belts), consumer is being denied recall repair due to mileage. *mjs

Engine head gaskets are leaking and vehicle isinoperable due to heat engine light staying on. Dealer and manufacturer contacted and cannot remedy problem. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

Head gasket failed due to overheating, recall on head gasket however vehicle denied due to mileage and date. (98mo1)mjs

Consumer states when the vehicle is driven it will overheat and the oil light flashes, consumer states he just recently became aware of the head gasket problem, and is requesting that the extended warranty program issued him a credit towards the purchase of a new vehicle.

I contacted the ford company to find out if this was a recalled item. Their response was that they had put an extened warranty on the head gaskets which expired on 12/31/98. But since it was past that datewhen i contacted them they would not cover the repairs. While finding out this imformation i also found out that they had never sent me the warranty information because they still had the previos owners name in their files ( 2 years after we purchased the car). Since i have had this problem i have talked to 6 other owners of this same car ( make model and year) that have had this same problem! and those are only a few i know in this small community!

Head gasket was recalled but consumer was unable to have it repaired due to dealer problem. Nlm

Motor mount failed.

While driving on interstate 75 in atlanta georgia the car overheated and stalled.a wrecker service was called and auto was towed to pep boys for repair.since it was after 5:00 pm they were not able to complete any work on the auto.mobile, overnight stay was required.was contacted the next morning by pep boys and told that the car had a blown head gasket and they did not do this type of repair.was told that this was part of a recall. Had car towed to dealership for estimate/repair.was told that due to the mileage that this would not be considered under the recall.had service work done and paid $1,250 and had the same problem when traveling home to jacksonville, florida.was forced to stop three times to cool engine and refill radiator.car is not repaired. Have contacted both the repair provider in atlanta and the purchasing dealer in jacksonville.i feel that i should have been notified of a potential problem, but have been told by ford that they stand behind their policies.

Head gasket has also caused $800 in other damage.problem is well known on this engine, see '95 windstar issues.

Rough idling yesterday, head gasket blew today.puff of white smoke and usual eruction of antifreeze. Avoided accident though i did swerve into next lane between 2 cars..

Headgasket blew, causing engine to overheat without any prior warning. The manufacturer should pay all of the repair cost because thie problem is very common with there models of vehicles.

The flex plate starter falling down.

Both motor mounts failed on well maintained vehicle with 32000 miles and never involved in a crash.

Drove vehicle at 65 mph for about 70 miles. At stop light engine began running rough and smoke started coming from under vehicle. Prior to manufacturer's recall notification in which consumer states he never received, he states as he was driving, the engine began to make sounds and then the temperature warning gauge and audible alarm signaled a problem, consumer had vehicle towed to dealer and it was then determined that there had been a head gasket failure, consumer is requesting manufacturer to repair vehicle free of charge or compensate him the retail value of the vehicle, even though failure occurred after the 7 year or 100,000 miles and also because he was not notified of the recall and as of 04-28-01 the vehicle remains at the dealer.

A recall (oom09) was issued in march of 2000 extending a recall issued in october, 1999.because i did not receive the letter i was not apprised of the warning signals that could have been prevented the head gasket failure.if i had received the recall letter i would have taken the auto to a dealer and had the head gaskets checked.the head gasket has failed and ford motor company is hesitant about repairing the automobile because at the time of failure the mileage exceeded the 100,000 mile/7 year recall parameter.i have had to replace or repair 9 major components of this automobile; alternator, fuel line, transmission, clutch, air conditioner, belts, thermostat (destroyed because of excessive heat precipitated by head gasket failure), etc.i think ford should be financially responsible for this damage and should repair the automobile at their expense because of lack of notification.the transmission was replaced in october and ford should have had access to this information via the computer database.ford is hesitant to repair the car and is in the midst if a waiting game.this

After driving from some time during hot weather, and in heavy traffic with slow speeds, the engine loses power for no apparent reason. The engine will not restart until 1/2 to 1 hours cooldown time had passed. I beleive this is related to the improper placement of the tfi module. My family, including 2 children, were stuck in the middle turning lane in busy traffic due to this faulty module. This occured twice during our vacation in june, both driving to and returning from sunriver, oregon. I have notified ford motor company.

Consumer had transmission serviced at 31,000 miles.9 months later, consumer was backing car out of garage and couldn't shift gears. Took vehicle to dealer, and she was told that vehicle needed a new transmission. A/c main line failed.radiator failed.rack and pinion steering failed.

Whenapproaching a stop sign or lightvehicle will stall without prior warning.in order to drive forwardconsumer would have tomove gear shift to reverse and drive.dealership was aware of problem.mechanicat dealership toldconsumer that she needesd a transmission replacement.

Transmission failed to engage from stop.

Forward clutch piston inside transmission breaks, causing the vehicle to surge forward, which could result in an accident.ford is aware of defect.

Transmission failed two times, engine mounts failed.

The vehicle rolls forward while the vehicle is in park. Please explain.tt

The head gaskets on my car which is a 94 mercury sable w/ a 3.8 liter v6 engine. The head gasket has failed on my car and i was not informed of a extended warranty not even when i called my dealer and asked for a quote on the 94 sable which i was quoted1350.00 , if the engine is gone to then 3000.00. I feel it is unfair i am being penalized for a faulty part i had no knowledge of and only 300 miles after the extended warranty, the copy of the warranty states to have the head gasket changed even if there is no problems.

While travelingheard a loud grinding noise coming from front end of vehicle. Soon afterwards vehicle decelerated.vehicle has been serviced, technician noticed transmission needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.

When coming to a stop, such as a redlight, and trying to accelerate from it, the vehicle will jump into neutral, and owner has to apply gas until the vehicle kicks back into gear and jerks suddenly forward. Dealer claimsthat manufacturer installed wrong pistons.

My mechanic tells me that the original parts used when the car was built were made of aluminum rather than a stronger metal and that ford is no longer using these aluminum parts.it was the aluminum piston that cracked in my transmission, causing some $2,600 of repair.i heard and saw a report on nbc today in december that some taurus and sable cars were being recalled because of transmission problems.but when i contacted ford that tell me it isn't so.i have already experienced one recall with regard to the head gasket on this car.are you aware of any such transmission problems as i decribed?is there a recall?please register my complaint.thank you.

I was driving car for est. 60 miles at highway speed then for about another 10 miles at 30-40 mph. I came to a traffic light where the car started to shake for a moment then stopped. I drove to the next stop sign where the car started to shake again. When i tried to drive out of the intersection the car would not move. The car was towed to a garage where it was determined the transmission had failed.

- the contact has a 1994 mercury sable.the contact stated that he purchased a vehicle on the afternoon of 03/16/2007, and the following morning 03/17/2007 the vehicle would not work, and transmission fluid was pouring out of the vehicle.the contact stated that he could pour it in the top and watch it come out of the bottom.the contact was told by the dealer that they would come and get the vehicle repair it and charge him for it. The current and failure mileage were both 131,368 miles.

When pressing the gas pedal the vehicle does not move for a few seconds , then it jumps out of gear. Dealer says it needs new transmission. Mileage is 40,000.

Purchased 1994 mercury sable 60,000 original miles, the vehicle would be ok cold within 5 miles of driving the car would slip out of gear at stops or if you coasted, can't put in reverse at after warm. Consulted the internet and found horror stories of other owners. The dealership says they no nothing of these problems.*la

1994 mercury sable transmission and engine mounts failed at 79000 miles.aluminum clutch piston replaced with steel one at my cost of 1800.00.ford replaced these for free in canada on a previous transmission made in the same year why not mine?why can't i feel good about buying american made cars? ford!

When stopping at an intersection it takes time to built up power pressure within the transmission. Problem is coming from the clutch pistons. Vehicle is inshop to get another transmission put in.

Transmission failed.

The transmission malfunctioned temporarily while driving.

Consumer stated that when stopping at a stop sign, then beginning to take off, transmission would hesitate.later, it would kick in.it was as if the transmission was slipping.consumer then tookvehicle to the mechanic, and was told that he needed a new transmission.he had itrepaired by having the aluminum pistols replaced with steel pistols. Consumer had to pay $2200.00 to have trepairs done, and needed help.

Transmission speed sensor problems.

Front piston in transmission cracked.this caused the transmission to lose pressure at slow speeds as if it went into nuetral.this was particularly dangerous when stopped to turn left.while waiting for oncoming traffic to pass the trans would lose pressure resulting in the nuetral condition.when the traffic passed and there was an opportunity to turn i would step on the gas but the car would not move.then after a couple of seconds, and since the engine speed had now increased, the trans pressure would increase and the car would suddenly go into gearand lurch into the left turn.however a few seconds of turning opportunityhad now been lost and the oncoming traffic was a little closer than i am comfortable with.i would not let my family drive the car until it was fixed.i took it to the ford dealer and he immediatly knew the cause, which indicates this is a common problem.in fact he had another customer with the same problem, same kind of car, same time.it cost me $1,400 to get the trans rebuilt.the defective part is and aluminum ring that is formed from sheet metal.during the forming process the metal was stretched too thin.this was evident by the stress mark or smile on the defective part.the repeated application of pressure eventuallyresulted in the crack which let the hydraulic pressure to leak past the piston.again this very dangerous.

Poor design of transmission , experienced failure.

When speed control device within transmission is not working proerly as designed, transmission does not shift, but downshifts into lower gear.

When engine is warm and completely stops.also, transmission is slow to engage when attempting to accelerate.aw

Drove vehicle at 65 mph for about 70 miles. At stop light engine began running rough and smoke started coming from under vehicle. Pulled to side of road and a moderate amount of engine oil was coming from the oil pan seal. Had card towed back to ford dealership where purchased. Dealer claims transmission had no fluid in it. Vechicle was just serviced two days before this trip and worked fine. When pulled off checked oil and transmission. Oil was down some, but not all.tranmission had fluid indicating above the ok to drive mark. Was able to move car back and forward for tow truck to attach. Transmisison rebuilt by ford at 88000 in 1998 two months after purchase of vehicle. Oil pan gasket replace june 0f 2001 at 117,000 miles.

When coming to a complete stop, the vehicle will take itself out of drive and into neutral.

Transmission:after the car has been running awhile and the car gears down for what ever reason, the ar won't respond to acceleration from gear down.when the gas pedal is depressed to continue forward or reverse motion the car won't respond.finally after either having sat for more than 30 minutes or after having reved the engine for several minutes, the transmission will engage.air conditioning:the local dealership has already supposedly fixed the ac once and it did work for a short period afterwards.the ac doesn't blow cold air.all of the major components have been replaced.

During vehicle operation transmission intermittently will slip out of gear and drop back into gear with sudden acceleration.upon inspection seals and pins have malfunctioned and is attributed to use of aluminum.replacement of both parts necessary to allow safe operation of vehicle.

Transmission does not want to engage after vehicle has come to a complete stop.problem is know in the repair industry as a faulty ford transmission piston.i understand ford had a major problem and redesigned this part for transmissions starting with the 1995 model.

Forward piston cracked in the transmission. Dealer contacted and is aware of problem. Repairwork done at owners expense. Provide further information.

A part inside transmission box is defective, causing damage. Transmission needs to be replaced at only 50,000 miles.

Automatic transmission malfunction.

While driving at any speed vehicle is stalled /jerked andlost power.also, transmissionwas not shifting properly. This was the third transmission put into vehicle.

Contact stated:when shifting from reverse to drive engine makes a loud noise. Also, the front suspension springs broke while driving.

When leaving stop light/sign & pressing accelerator pedal, vehicle would jump or jerk to another gear. Took to dealer & told transmission piston seal made of aluminum can break & not strong enough for sable.

Transmission failed. Mjs

When coming to a complete stop, the vehicle will take itself out of drive and into neutral.

While driving on the highway at any rate of speedvehicle will begin to slow down and then completely shut down without warning, cause unknown.please give any further details.

We started noticing after driving our vehicle for a short while and stopping at a stop sign the vehicle would act like it was in neutral, after accelerating it will kick into gear. We have taken the vehicle to a ford dealership for service, they have told me that there is a o-ring out in the transmission and it will need to be pulled out of the car. There has been a bulletin put out on the problem but no recall. What can i do about this problem? my vehicle has only 50,000 miles and the transmission is as good as out. They tell me the repaires will be around $800. I think that is very unfair to their (ford/mercury) consumers if there is a problem with their product bad enough to put out a bulletin to their mechanics that it should be fixed at their cost! can you help?

Transmission malfunctioned while sitting at stop sign, upon pressing accelerator, vehicle hesitated, then lurched forward.transmission shop indicates defect in transmission pistons, mfr won't assist, not fixed.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Engine head gasket is leaking, causing vehicle to idle really rough.in addition, replaced defective motor mounts/ rebuilt transmission, and replaced defective starter.

Transmission disengages at stop; lunges into gear at 1/3 throttle, like popping a clutch.

Transmission was replaced at only 28500 miles, consumer is requesting a refund.

Transmission failed.

Consumer has been experiencing problems withautomatic transmission.while driving automatic transmission went out.when the put foot on the pedal, it would "buck."the manufacturer has yet to be contacted.

In normal driving the car started jerking and bucking.my regular service station drove it and sent me to a transmission place.he drove it and said it had a problem brably because these cars (94 sables and also taurus) had aluminum pistons which cracked under pressure. Later models, and replacement parts are steel.this was defective part that ford should replace.every one i know who has this same model had had the same problem.the cost is expensiive - $1492.ford should pay for this!it is also dangerous.

Whenever the vehicle would pull off from a stop position transmission would hesitate and jump into 2nd gear before taking off. Dealer notified, and repairs were being made at consumer's cost, believed condition was due to faulty parts in transmission. *ml

Transmission failed due to cracked aluminum piston, design of aluminum piston was replaced with steel due to faulty design.

Vehicle is bucking while driving, transmission is also not staying in gear.

Transmission would stay in neutral for a few seconds then jerk into gear. Both forward or reverse. Once in gear, it would be okay until coming to a stop, then it would slip for a few seconds. Quit using overdrive to be able to drive until the shop could work on it. Shop found broken sprags and other problems. Rebuilt and installed all updates.

I would like to know why a safety issue is not consideredto be a problem by ford. It is a big saftey issue to me when a car can crash or injure/kill a pedestrian

Transmission cooling lines replaced.

When driving at any speed, there is a power shortage within the transmission which causes the vehicle to slow down or stop.

Torque converter seal blew.

The problem started according to my records around 77k.the problem was finnally diagnosed as torque converter lock up shutter.changing the fluid corrects the problem, but now only lasts about 4k miles.i would say there is a manufacturing problem with the converter.

Vehicle fire caused by a short in air conditioner compressor/line. Also, clutch locked up.

Vehicle caught on fire due toa short in air conditioner compressor/line. Also clutch locked up.

Transmission and clutch repaired. *mjs

Consumer states due to the type of plastic material installed, the pistonin the clutch assembly has cracked , causing the vehicle to be inoperative. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer awear of the problem.

Design flaw caused the forward clutch piston to crack resulting in leakage and engagement problems.

Transmission planetary gear failure.

Automatic transmissionwill slip out of gear,/own shift at high speeds when driving at or above 65 mph.dealership replacedvss sensor when this happenedfirst time.whenconsumer starts out, vehicle will automatically down shift into next lowest gear, regardless of speed.dealership informedconsumer that it was an internal problem withforward clutch piston.a transmission specialist stated that extreme temperatures will causesteel piston to crack causing this defect.please provide any additional information/attachments.

Transmission failed. Nlm

Consumer had transmission replaced under extended warranty, the transmission started having problems again but was told transmission would not be covered because the warrenty was up, this will be the car third transmission.nlm

Transmission is not working properly, sticks prior to engagement into gear and will not move/pauses. Mjs

When driving along and trying to stop the vehicle driver has to pump the brakes hard in order to stop the vehicle.

Car accelerated uncontrollably, brakes applied, but could not stop vehicle; had to put car in neutral to stop vehicle.

Anti- lock brake failure warning light illuminated.car was inspected by the servicing dealer and we were instructed to replace the abs computer at a cost of $1,500.failure to do so, reported the service manager, would result in continuing degradation of the braking system to the point of complete failure.i will provide vin information if required for further investigation.with only 29,000 miles on a well maintained car, failure of the braking system was shocking.

To come home, the car started and the noise was gone.i drove slowly home and when i got home, i looked on the internet to see if anyone had this problem.i came across a complaint page where someone is complaining of the same issue and stated that his steering went.he said it was due to a safety recall.i looked up the recall and came across a page that had the recalls for my vehicle which is a 1994 mercury sable.the campaign id # is 98v323000.it goes on to say:summary: detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the subframe, which supports the engine and transmission, allows the rear corners of the subframe to drop.if both rear corners drop, steering would become suddenly very difficult, affecting vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.i contacted the dealer on church street in new bedford, sentury lincoln/mercury.they told me to bring the car in.when i got there, they told me there would be a $75.00 charge to see if that is the problem, and if it is, i would have to pay, because the recall was not on their computer.i called the ford company's 800 number and was told the same thing.i then called a mercury number, that i got off the internet and was told by that gentleman that the id # of the recall is from a vendor and the ford company has a right to not consider it a recall and if they do not support it, which they do not, i would have to file a complaint with you, which is what i am doing.

Recall # 98v32300 ford/subframe corrosion; after having recall work performed owner began to have a number of problemsiwth vehicle, such asloud clunking noise. Also, transmission was falling from under the car. Vehicle seemed as though itwas changing gears while driving. Please provide any furhter details.

Consumer states there is a clunk noise, dealer stated subframe bushing sleeves were cracked causing bushing to move and make the clunk noise.*dt

Mounts failed prior to recall notice 98v-323, consumer request reimbursement. Nlm

The front and rear motor mounts broke and had to be replaced. Year of vehicle does not fall into the recall.

While making a left turn heard intermittently a loud poppy grinding noise which was coming from underneath the vehicle.

Whiledrivingat any speed steering wheel feels loose, and makes aloud noise. Dealer notified.independent shop indicated the sway bar failed.

Coil spring broke causing tire to blow from cut.

I have a 1994' sable in which the front left coil spring is just about to break due to fractures in metal. My 93' sable in which have sold, had same problem.when it broke i was turning at the time.luckly i did not wreck but had no control of car since the spring ruptured my tire, and frame of car was scraping the blacktop.

While drivingfront coil spring broke, causing the vehicle to drop onto the frame. Vehicle has been repaired by a private mechanic. Manufacturer and dealer will be notified.

Car parked in garage.coil spring broke, towed to dealership and repaired under deductable warranty.very dangerous if vehicle is moving.

Contact stated:when shifting from reverse to drive engine makes a loud noise. Also, the front suspension springs broke while driving.

Front end springs broke whilevehicle was parked indriveway.alsospring has broken on opposite side, which smashedstrut inside, causing vehicle to fall on the wheel on passenger's side. Car could not be moved.contacted dealer.

Stopped at red light, coil spring collapsed, destroying tire.

Torsion bar links, in both front and rear on both left and right side failed, causing loud noises and poor control.

On may 26, 1999, i was driving past janesville, wisconsin on i-90 at 65 miles per hour. The car started shaking and i heard a thump on the undercarriage. I also saw tire tread fly out from under my car in the rear view mirror. I got out to see which tire was flat. There was no flat tire, however on closer inspection, i saw that all of the tread came off of the right rear tire. I managed to limp along on the shoulder and exit i-90. I went to the closest tire center ( goodyear ) and bought four new tires. I am sending this report because of what is happening with the p235 firestone/bridgestone tires. I think the nhtsa should start investigating other tire sizes because of what happened to me last year. Thank you for your prompt consideration in this very important matter.( dot number: tire size: 205/65r15s )

Dashboard causes glare.

I have had constant overheating problems with ths car.the problems range from cracked flush/fill valves, to hoses,to water pump failure.03/30/2002 transmission started slipping. A mechanic at a local shop recommended adding fluid.the problem continued and each time the mechanic recommended adding fluid.no leak was determined. Problem continued until the transmission went out in 07/2003.

"car is very auto efficient".the consumers license plates were stolen.

The sliding unit under the drivers seat came loose and ultimately came off causing the drivers to trip on it when entering and exiting the vehicle.nlm

Hatch glass came loose started leaking(56000) fuel pump started acting up get hot and hang up(75000) no recall. State farm showed they paid for towing on many, ford products that used the same pump still no recall. Transmission shifts down, or shifts out of gear while driving smith ford conway was supposed to check the heads for leaks six months later the head gasket blew, and the air went out at this time i was told the the date this car was originally put in sevice made it out of warranty. This car is sitting in my garage with motor out of it because ford didn't do its job. Paint peeled off the inside of the door post.

Vehicle stalls mostly at slow speeds, and engine is knocking. Also, oil light comes on intermittently.

Vehicle stalls intermittently at any speed. Has been to dealer numerous times, check engine light comes on a lot.

This sudden and without warning failure caused uncontrolled acceleration. After stopping at an intersection my wife pulled into the roadway and began to accelerate. Shortly she began to say that the car was going faster and faster and she couldn't stop the car from speeding up. I reached over to hit the off switch on the cruise control and my wife continued to press on the brake pedal. The car continued to strain ahead and i could hear the engine noise of high rpms. I tried the coast switch, nothing. We were heading to another intersection and the light was red so i pulled the drive lever to neutralwhile my wife continued to brake. The car slowed then stopped but the engine was fully throttled and running at high speed. I hit the accelerator pedal a couple of times and the engine went to idle. No my wife did not panic and hold the accelerator down since she was pressing the brake pedal the entire time. I was the one who hit the throttle pedal to reset teh cable or break it loose from whatever the linkage was caught on. After stopping and letting the engine idle my wife put it back in gear and there was no further incidents that trip. We spoke to a relative this evening and they related the dateline story. I looked up the web site, read teh story and it was exactly as the other had stated. The car took off like it was possessed and braking would not stop it. We were on open road with light traffic and had two experienced people to deal with the incident. Without the open road, light traffic, dry pavement and calm handling, we would have harmed ourselves or others without a doubt. I concur with the engineer in the dateline story about faulty engineering and sloppy engineering investigation. The aviation world (faa) would investigate the incident and the oem would be heading up an investigation to determine the fault and propose a redesign. This is most certainly due to an electrical short and power available to the cruise control system without operator engagenment.

When putvehicle into drive to park with brakes firmly applied, vehicle will lunge foward, and driving over 40 mph the vehicle will beginto vibrate. *ml

Cruise control failed to disengage causing the vehicle to stick at 73 mph.

Transmission disengages at stop; lunges into gear at 1/3 throttle, like popping a clutch.

When speed control is on it does not maintain the desired set speed by the driver. Consumer made a complaint with the manufacturer when car was purchased . The dealer adjusted the car back in 1995, problem still exists.

Vehicle has excessively high engine idle speed following a cold start; results in vehicle lurching forward/rearward following a stop; excessive speed.tt

Car accelerated uncontrollably, brakes applied, but could not stop vehicle; had to put car in neutral to stop vehicle.

1,whenvehicle idles there is a thumping noise comming from the engine compartment and the smell of gasoline in the radiator .2. The abs system bounces extremely violently when brakes are applied.3. Cruise control works only when it wants to, as if shorting.4. A/c died and will not take a charge.

Received recall notice (97v025000) & contacted the dealership. The mechanic refused to repair the throttle under recall. Dealer had no parts available from the manufacturer to repair the throttle & also stated that recall did not affect the vehicle.

When the braked were applied, the vehicle surge forward, which caused consumer to lose control of the vehicle.

My transmission makes a loud thump noise when the car is shifted from park to either drive or reverse.also when i come to a complete stop and then press the accelerator, the car seems to be in neutral and then after a few seconds goes into gear and launches forward.while driving,my speedometer will be accurate, and then just read zero for a while and then will start working again.my air conditioning was not working for a while and it just recently started working again, but often makes a loud high pitched screaming noise.i also believe that one or more of my motor mounts is loose or broken because when i shift the transmission into gear, the entire engine seems to jump up and then come down and jerk the whole car.

Cruise control failure.

Car was parking driveway consumer went to start car it accelerate and hit house.tt

Speedometer malfunctioned, the vehicle wont go into gear/ rev up, and wont go when slowing down, it will lunge forward which may result in a crash.when the speedometer is working, there is no problem.please provide further information.

Rough idling yesterday, head gasket blew today.puff of white smoke and usual eruction of antifreeze. Avoided accident though i did swerve into next lane between 2 cars..

Speedometer gives inaccurate readings over 50 mph, sticks when speed declines.service tech. Told me"congratulations, your the owner of a late modle ford."meaning: your not the only one with this prob.expensive to replace...radiator side tanks pulled apart in cold weather, normal anti freeze ratio, once again told this happens to late model ford's... Blower motor chirps if you keep it at low or med.-low speeds, only stops when on med-high or high.

Immediately after the purchase of the vehicle, the heater failed.the dealer informed the consumer of a previous recall regarding the engine and advised that the vehicle should not be driven until engine was replaced, consumer feels the recall information should have been given prior to purchase of vehicle. *scc

While driving in a snow storm went to turn windshield wipers on, and they didn't respond at any speed.windshieldwipers went out without warning.contacted dealer.

Intermittent switch. Same problem before during warranty period, when dealer replaced switch. Same problem on another, 1992, vehicle of same type. Dealers acknowledge regular failure/complaints on these switches. Dealer, regional office, and ford customer assistance center refuse to replace switch except at full charge of nearly $200. Sudden loss of visibility due to poor design/defective equipment is a major safety issue!

Whenvehicle makes a turn the wihndshield wipers stop.onceturn is complete they will resume.manufacturer has not been notified.
