Hile driving vehicle at speed 30mph, compartment fire under the dash, saw smoke coming out.
Problem started with a siezed ignition switch in september 1998. Replaced switch. In augaust 1999 switch begain to fail. I had to wiggle the key to get my digital instruments to function (intermittant). On about 14 aug. 99 i wiggled the switch and smoke rolled up from under the dash. I was able to turn off the ignition switch before the wireing ignited. When i checked to see what smoked i saw a purple/white wire to the ignition switch with its insulation melted off. I could see it melted through the wireing bundle up to the fire wall under the dash. My wireing diagram isn't all inclusive but the wire is in the brake indication circuit. The vehicle also has the stalling problem, brake vaccume assist problem , had the power steering hose leak,( 3 serious safety problems that i saw on your web page) had2 ac compressors fail, fuel pump fail, power steeringpump fail.

The speedometer's rpms go up, and the car seems to roar and stay in neutral gear or another gear.it won't shift gears. After a while the car just takes off, no warranty, dealer cannot duplicate the problem.
Car cruised just fine 25 miles to town, got all my stuff done in town, pulled up to a stop sign on a hill and the car would not move, engine ran just fine, the transmission would not shift into gear, car only has 110k on it, had to roll back off the road and stop, park gear worked, after an hour car still would not shift into gear, 4 days later i went out to try it again and the thing went into all gears and took off.

The transmission slips bucking the car out of control when idling along with the aluminum pistons being damaged. The car jumps forward whichcauses unneccesary accidents and causes the car to stall on busy streets. A new transmission was needed and all new pistons due to a bad design.there is a website www.visi.com/~bruns/results2.html that contains about 50 complaints about the transmission on this car. Ford should take responsibility for this, it wasa bad design and they should take the heat for it. Thank you.
We have replaced the transmission in this car 3 times one at 95, one at 125 and one at 200000.i reviewed the recall notices on this make and model and ther e are 104 pages which i have printed out.to date, we have only been notified of about 5 recalls.on the recall pages there are transmission defects.which we were never notified. Of.ihave contacted ford/mercury on this and told that no recalls were made on the transmission.please adivse what i should do. Shold i bring this list into a dealer and demand that each recall be dealt with or what.at this point, i stopped driving the car a year ago because it was too expensive to keep getting repaired.the body is in perfect condition and would run fantistic if i could afford to get all of the repairs done.for expample there has always been a humming soundfrom the rear end, but it is in my imagination.please advise what i can demand from the manufacturer especially on the transmission and on the list of 135 pages.thank you dianne m. I have owned a 1989 ford taurus which had the same seat belt failure and a recall was issued for the seat belt assembly that failed.i was told by a ford representative that the mercury uses the same part as the ford but no recall is planned.the seat belt releases without warning while the car is in motion and would not restrain a passenger in the event of a collision.this occurs on both the driver and passenger side seat belt assenblys.i have noted when riding in other sables of the same age that they also have this defect..the recall that was done on my taurus fixed the problem.this defect is of particular concern to me as it affects the primary restraint system and many owners will never realize that the system will not restrain them in a collision as sometimes the belt remains plugged into the clasp, but is not secured and can be pulled out by the slightest pressure

I have removed the tie rod and examined the end - sheared off inside of rubber boot.absolutely no apparent damage to other components in the wheel/steering assemblies.we were very very lucky that this failure did not occur at speed.

Consumer was following a right curve at 40 mph whensteering froze up, halfway around, could not turn or move steering. Consumer continued off road, and applied brakes in order to stop vehicle. Defect was due to faulty rack and pinion steering.also,midas told him that there was a specific problem withrack and pinion. Consumerwas aware of another sable 1990 that was involved in a crashdue to failure of rack and pinion, and killed the passenger inother vehicle. Consumer was told by professional mechanic that this model and year of vehicle should have been put on recall for this defect because it was a known defect.

The body structure where the post that holds the tailgate closed failed.the metal is cracked in several places, not permitting the tailgate to be closed properly.the vehicle has not been in a rear end situation where the body structure would be compromised.we were lucky that we realized that the tailgate was not closing completely, and checked out the latch assembly.the post now just bends over when the tailgate is closed.thank god that we discovered this, as i would not allow someone to ride in the back of this vehicle and its comprimised safety.
The dealer was very helpful.however ford customer service/zone rep. Was not even interested in this problem.if i had not taken the trim off to clean, i would have never seen the failure.this striker is needed to keep the door/tailgate closed.childen can ride in the rear facing seat of this vehicle.if something should happen to cause this tailgate to open suddenly, the failed metal that holds the striker in place woiuld be virtually useless.the tailgate would likely fly open.the structure of this vehicle has not been comprimised, by the way.there has not been an accident to cause this sort of failure.ford's lack of interest is cerainly alarming for this safety issue.

Was informed of recall already performed on vehicle by manufacturer.did not own vehicle at time of recall. Repair shop said no work, recall or otherwise, done on vehicle. Could not recall repair on vehicle since recall work was already done by dealer.
Recall related, 93v106, structure motor mounts/rear sub-frame, broke.
Rear sub-frame mounts came unattached allowing motor and transmission to fall onto the ground with near head on collision due to loss of control and damaging other components. Component was repaired prior due to recall however recall repair failed.
While driving the body mounts supporting transmission & engine broke. This caused the transmission/engine to fall. The engine fell on the steering binding. Had no control over the steering.
Front subframe bolts broke due to corrision . Recall was issued but only for rear. The bolt was replaced and the consumer was asking the manufacturer to pay for repair since the defect was essentially the same as that of the recall.
While traveling 30-40 mph the subframe dropped onto the axles due to retainer washerrusting out, making it very difficult to steer the vehicle.recall 98v32300 was listed for the same type of problem. However, this vehicle was not included due to vin.

In reference to 93v106,the vehicle's defective rear subframe corroded, causing the subframe to drop and almost caused an accident.vehicle had exact problem as the recall, but not included.

The sub-frame locks, bolts, and washers had to be replaced when the sub-frame dropped.the steering became extremely difficult.i had the car towed to the dealer and repaired at the cost of $271.96.when i received recall 98s36 i took it and the orginal receipt to the dealer.i was told that the sub-frame fasteners which were replaced in october of 1998 were from the front corners of the sub-frame.the parts they replaced were one subframe mount kit (fmc e6pz 5a364 a) and two nut-m12 x 1.75 plates (fmcn804482 s100 ).are these the part numbers involved in the recall?i would appreciate some feedback on this issue.the receipt i have doesn't define whether the fasteners replaced where for the front or rear corners of the sub-frame.

Please help me i am mentally disabled with a family and this is what is happening to me -please help me. The frame on my car broke and fell down while my wifewas coming home from work. The dealer verified the recall and got us a loaner but said it would cost 25.00 a day its been 10 days and monday august 7th i was told that my car wasn't fixable because of the excess corrosion and it was fifty fifty that i would have no car and a rental bill please help me im at the point where i just can't stand even thinking about it. We have sat by the phone four nine days and called ourselves after that long they say i may get nothin, no carand a rental billplease help.

Vehicle -- 1990 mercury sable station wagon, 3.8 engineexperienced loss of steering control due to failure of engine/transmission lower subframe mount failing.subsequent motion also breached both rear brake lines with major loss of braking power.with significant effort, i was able to maintain control of the vehicle.
Vehicle was traveling at 15 mph or less when both rear & front subframes disconnected. Dealer notifed and informed consume r that rear subframes would be repaired under manufacturer's recll, but front would be repaired at consumer's expense. My wife owns a 1990 mercury sable. She as well has complained about a sticky gas pedal. I myself have drove the car when the gas pedal was sticking and the car accelerated. Sometimes when we have put our foot on the gas pedal the car will not accelerate until we push alittle harder then the car takes off so quickly it could cause an accident. There was several occasions then the car accelerated while driving normally down the road. I was able to put the car in neutral and then brake to a safe stop. We found that the drivers side floor mat was part of the problem getting up under the gas pedal. We removed the floor mat but the car still has a sticky gas pedal. We took the car to a certified auto repair shop to complain about the gas pedal, but they found nothing wrong. I'm telling you this doesn't happen every time, but more often then not the gas pedal sticks. Its just a matter of time before my wife would get into an accident,unless we find a way to fix this. She has not driven the car for over 6 months now because she is afraid of it. We don't feel comfortable with trying to sell the car as it could cause someone else an injury.

First: station wagon's rear seat cover can be latched without a key. Recall 92v065000. Vehicle was sold in ohio & now in florida. Second:brake rotors are corroded & should have been replacedrecall 91v134001.
Transmission planetary set, torque converter and mounts failed, also power steering pump, right wheel boot and axle failed.
