The side air bags in my 2002 mercury mountaineer deployed for no reason.although no one was seriously injured because the car was traveling at less than 5 miles per hour at the time, this could have been a serious situation.ford's response has been less than satisfactory.despite the fact that i prompltly notified ford of the incident, no one at ford's consumer affairs department has contacted me to investigate the problem as promised.in fact, when i called ford on march 1, 2003 to follow-up, a telephone representative informed me that ford's computer records show that a consumer affairs agent had contacted me on february 27, 2003.i received no such call and i am still waiting to hear from an agent from that department. I went to take my vehicle for emissions test and oil change and when i went to move the gear shift from park to drive, it just dangled in the air.i found this totally unbelievable!!!!!, needless to say, my key was stuck in the ignition due to it being stuck in park.i had to have it towed and steering column replaced.then yesterday while having the brakes fixed and trying to have it test driven, the key was stuck in the ignition again and not able to move to the engine start position.this is ridiculous, it needs to be something done about this situation since this is at some point, cause an injury.fortunately, both times my vehicle was parked. But what if someone else isn't?please help us out.these are nice vehicles and this is giving them a bad rep.thank you.

Also, as i was en route from the dealership, on the expressway a motorist tried to cut me off and that is when i found out that the horn was not working. Things have just went downhill from there.

The car would have a warning display that a door was ajar and we would check all the doors and re-close them all and the warning would still appear. Then we would check the lift gate window on the back and re-close it and the display would go away, but the lift gate was closed the whole time before. It constantly does this and now the lift gate has a crack in it.

I have a 2002 mercury mountaineer, same as the explorer. My od light started flashing and i had ford service center run the code, code 755 solenoid b, i had the ford service center replace it to the tune of $698 on march 5. I got the truck back march 5, 2009 at 12pm. March 6, 2009 8 am, same issue. I took it back to the service center and i'm told i need a new transmission. March 9, 2009 i took the truck to 2 separate shops, one of them being a veteran transmission repair shop. Same solenoid code 755 solenoid b. I took it back to the service center and am told that they will replace and i still need a new transmission. The transmission repair shop told me that ford knows of the problem and it is not the transmission, the wiring harness is bad which causes the solenoid to show as bad and show the code. She said she has had dealings with the same service center and everytime they tell customers they need a new transmission. There are thousands of complaints online for the same exact issue.

Just left the highway and ended up at a red light traffic signal and one the light turned green, i went to drive off and a loud boom i could hear coming from under my hood, as i looked in my rear view mirror a semi truck started honking its horn and slammed to miss hitting from behind. I went to pull to the side the road but truck was jumping all over and i had to pull in front of cars turning which i smelt a smell like something burning.the spark plug had ripped from its socket, it had happened the first time 1 year ago now 2nd one, repairman says he sees this all the time with my vehicle, " ford is helping putting my kids through college with these problems from your year" wow, i thought ford got, paid, repairmen got paid, and i'm the only one taken for a ride of a lifetime. Not right is it.

While driving on i75, i heard a loud bang then a constant popping sound from under the hood. I pulled off the interstate and looked under the hood. I found that one of the spark plugs had blown out of the engine, which allowed fuel to escape into the engine compartment.

My spark plug on #2 cylinder just shot out of my truck's engine...argh!!!! destroyed my coil pack and could have busted the fuel line. And now i cant put in the spark plug. Wtf........???????

I purchased a 2002 mercury mountaineer on 4/11/2011. As i was driving it home from the dealership, the same day, i noticed some black smoke coming out the back of the car. There were no messages that came up in the message center window so i had no clue what was happening. As i looked back up from the rear view mirror, i noticed a first responders truck next to the drivers window who was yelling " get out of the vehicle, its on fire!" immediately i pulled over and my mother and i had to jump from the vehicle because the entire engine area was engulfed with flames. I was injured while i was fleeing from the vehicle. The fire department and state troopers were enroute and my vehicle was hosed down and towed. I almost died in this vehicle because of the rear differential going out on it. This vehicle type has had many problems with this part and their customers should be compensated! this car is a fire hazard! if i would have had my 3 small children in their car seats i may not have been able to get them all out in time.compensated!!

1.purchased this vehicle 4/05.2.8/26/05 while driving on i-81 the vehicle began vibrating and making a tapping noise. Check engine light came on.pulled over, could not determine the problem and drove straight to the dealership of purchase.3.8/26/05 -cylinder head needs to be replaced because spark plug blew out and damaged the head.extended warranty does not cover the replacement/repair because it "was not caused by a moving lubricated part."vehicle would be ready by friday, 9/2/05.4.original technician at school, and new technician would be assigned.new date for vehicle to be ready wednesday 9/7/05.5.turned in my rental car on 9/7/05.after test drive by dealership the vehicle appears to still have a problem.got a ride home.received a call about 5:30pm advising that the "timing chain pulley" needs to be replaced.part ordered and vehicle may be ready on 9/8/05.no discussion on the warranty coverage for this additional repair.6.go to http://consumeraffairs.com/automotive/ford_spark.html and you will find that since june 2001 this spark plug defect has been reported.7.costs are extensive for the repair in excess of $3000, and i've only had the vehicle for 4 months and drove it only 2 months because i have been away with the virginia army national guard.8.no guarantee that this problem won't happen again since ford has not recalled the vehicles to correct the problem.how can i get my money back for the repair?i feel that i have purchased a lemon and i also feel that the dealership knew more about the issues with this vehicle than they revealed. I would like the vehicle exchanged for one of equal value.

Driving from dallas, tx, to west lafayette, in, in jan 2010, the 2002 mercury mountaineer with 4.6l v8 engine blew a spark plug out of the cylinder head causing us to stop in a small town to have the engine repaired.this was a factory installed (not replaced) spark plug.i have seen many complaints about this in the ford v8 engine.the vehicle had around 86,000 miles on it at the time and was not due for a spark plug replacement until 100,000 miles.this was a safety hazard as gasoline is spewing out of the cylinder head with an attached and still arcing spark plug.

Problems with vehicle's transmission at various speeds. *mr the engine remained slipping, jumping, and making noises, the rear window did not hold and fell on the consumers head, the steering column locks, the fuel engine read empty and the light was on, the interior coat hooks had come out of the walls, and the transmission was jumping, clunking, and slipping. *scdup of 10022342_pco

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. While driving approximately 3 mph, the high temperature and low oil warning indicators illuminated. The oil pressure gauge dropped to zero and a loud noise was heard. The contact merged the vehicle to the emergency lane and shut the vehicle off. The contact checked the oil level and observed that the oil was full. The contact restarted the vehicle and the noise was still present. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The technician noticed that there were metal shavings in the engine oil and the engine needed to be replaced or repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

New showroom 2002 mercury mountaineer. The engine in this vehicle malfunctioned twice without warning; no overheating, no dashboard light indicators either time. July 2004/odometer reading 92213, the mechanics at the freeway lincoln mercury were baffled. They advised me that all the fluids were in the vehicle.later (one week) they found a "hole" in the radiator. I was told i had a new engine, with a new warranty. 2nd time was june 06, odometer 166199,(new engine 73986) no warning, no dashboard lights, no overheating.per a different certified mechanic not only was the engine not new but it had severe corrosion in it and showed signs of multiple overheating conditions. They told me of an "all technical service bulletin" dated 1/21/02 for my vehicle's engine regarding the "engine head gasket"---"some engine assemblies with aluminum cylinder heads repaired in-vehicle have been found to leak coolant and/or oil from the cylinder head gasket area due to particle contamination or scratches and dents to block mating surfaces." action: refer to the following service information for recommended gasket sealing surface preparation procedures.if the engine diagnosis points to a faulty head gasket (leaks oil, leaks coolant, oil or coolant contamination, or air in coolant), thorough cleaning procedures are necessary for a successful head gasket repair.diagnosis and post- repair confirmation can be done successfully utilizing leak detection methods such as a black light dye process. Service procedure:to sum up, a successful leak repair depends on:accurate diagnosis of the leak using ford-recommended test equipment and procedures .surface preparation and gasket installation using the approved tools, cleaners, and methods.exercising care and cleanliness during disassembly/assembly of components use of genuine ford oem replacement parts<use of a ford remanufacturer

Rear panel under window has recently cracked, there are now 2 vertical cracks running down the back of the vehicle.also, hitch to rear door doesn't stay up. This vehicle has also had a new engine put it and injectors have popped out on more than one occasion. This is the most expensive vehicle i have ever purchased and it has given me more problems than i could ever expect in a vehicle. Ford needs to compensate for this vehicle. We have owned several ford's and have never seen anything like this. It is a true lemon>>>>

Consumernoticedfluid leaking from under vehicle.consumer took car to dealer.dealer told consumer that the radiator needed to be replaced. Consumer stated that at 700 miles radiator should not need replacing.

The front end dash has a very loud rattle while letting up on the gas or depressing the brakethe vehicle has been in the shop five times.they have readjusted the a/c lines many times, tightened items in the engine, and replaced a missing bolt in the firewall.it was fixed once that last a couple of months, but the noise is back.it will be going in the shop for the sixth time.also, there is a squeak when going over bumps.it has been in the shop twice and they replaced the ball bearing joints.however, the squeak is back.

Add to your list of complaints of spark plug ejection from the aluminum head.this is a ford motor company design flaw that they refuse to resolve.total parts and labor to fix = $3,372.50.

2002 mountaineer head valve broke. ***nar***the consumer agreed to a rebuilt engine and the work was completed on december 29, 2005. Twelve days after having the rebuild engine installed, it ceased while the consumer was driving. The consumer was told a hose clamp cameloose.

Enginehead gasket keeps rupturing and spilling gas all over engine. Consumer is concerned about a fire starting.please provide any further information.

I was driving home in my 2002 mercury mountaineer on monday evening in lyndhurst, nj around the time of 7 pm.i heard a very loud bang, followed by some rattling which scared me half to death. I had no idea what has occurred. I was very nervous because i was unable to apply pressure to my break to stop without the truck idling very rough like it wanted to stall.the truck lost all power. I carefully proceeded to a local gas station in rutherford and dropped my car off for the machining to look at in the morning.i received a call the following morning from (the mechanic) who stated the #5 spark plug ripped out of my aluminum engine head.for a cost of $366.00 he re-threaded the spark plug, installed a new coil and did a tune-up. He told me this is a very common problem with certain v8 and v10ford engines.it can occur again, or the same plug may rip out again. This is a very dangerous situation especially when i have to go on two highways to get to work everyday. The sound was like i was being fired on by nato. Imagine losing power on the highway with people behind you at 65 mph. I looked on the internet and found many compliants by ford customers who had the same thing happen several times, causing them to replace the engine. Ford does not want to take responsibilty, someone needs to make them replace these dangerous engines. Spark plugs just fire the engine, they are not supposed to shoot out of the engine like small rockets. What if my hood was open and this happened? someone could have goten killed. If this were a baby seat, crib or child toy it would be recalled. We can't wait till there is a death from this problem.

Consumer was traveling about 70mph on a highway and smelled gasoline coming through air conditioner'svents.she was able to pull over toshoulders, andvehicle was leaking oilfrom underneath. Dealershipwas aware.

On local street at about 25-30 mph. #2 sparkplug blew out from cylinder head. It sounded like a blown exhaust gasket. After arriving home have found that plug was blown out breaking the coil and exposing the eng to a possible fire from the arcing. This was original sparkplug installation.

Suddenly stalls when braking & steering wheel is turned when engine warm and has less then 1/2 tank of gas.

While going up a hill at 30 mph consumer noticed dash lights flickering on and off.a while laterengine shut down, vehicle had to be towed to dealer.on november 1st, while traveling at about 60 mph, engine died.consumer tried to restart while car was coasting to avoid a rear end collision, luckily vehiclerestarted.consumerfelt very lucky.please provide any further inforamtion.

I had a spark plug blow out of my 2002 mercury mountaineer 4.6l engine. The car has 86,000 miles on it but this is the second engine. The original engine was replaced in dec 2003 when it had 49,000 miles on it. The original engine seized up after an oil pump failure.

Spark plug blew out of cylinder head and stripped threads.mercury mountaineer 2002.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.the contact stated that the timing chains on his vehicle were loose, which could cause the engine to fail.while driving 10 mph, he heard a clanking sound on several occasions.the vehicle was taken to a mercury dealer twice, but they would not assist for free.the purchase date was unknown.the current mileage was 85,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.

Vehicle releases extremely bad/ over powering sulfur smell at uneven intervals while driving or stopped. It can even be smelled inside the cabin. Happens 5 or 6 times on a normal day. Mercury says they are aware of problem and had it on a few other vehicles, but don't know how to fix it.mercury told me to switch brands of gas- that has not worked.

The first time the transmission problem happened while i was driving on i-275 going to jury duty.it was rush hour, stop & go traffic.i was excellerating and at approximately 60 miles per hour, the truck like "slammed" into gear.it started me & i thought i had been rear-ended. I contacted the dealer on my cell phone and asked to bring it in.i was told since i was in jury duty, i would have to wait until my service ended and then bring it in.i asked if the transmission or drivetrain could further damage & was told no.i was afraid to keep driving it but did not have a choice at the time.i kept track of the times the truck "slammed" into gear which up until the time i took the vehicle in, was when the vehicle was warm & it was on excellerations at different speeds & times.the service people said it did not do it while they test drove it but ford's knew there was a problem with it & the repair was to reprogram the computer chip & that would fix the problem it did not.i had to re-schedule an appointment for another attempt to fix it. This time the dealer placed a recording device on the truck & were able to capture it acting up.the service person told me i needed a new transmission & that's what he'd like to do to repair it but i'd have to wait until ford's retrieved the data.i was concerned about driving the vehicle and it only had 800 miles on it!while waiting for a determination, i had driven the vehicle about 6 or 7miles and an awful odor filled the cab.it smelled like something burning under the vehicle. I pulled over & checked under the truck for a fire.i did not see anything that looked like it was burning.i called the dealer & complained again about it slamming into gear & now the awful smell.i wondered if the transmission was burning.i was told it was another complaint others made as well.it was coming from the exhaust (valve?)for the 3rd try, these 2 issues & others are now being repaired.dt

Three sets of goodyear, eagle ls tires, size p24570r16 (no dot # mentioned) with less than one hundred miles had to be replaced because knots were found on sidewall and tread. Dealer has been contacted. Engine light illuminated due to faulty dpfe sensor; air bag light on, air bag module replaced; loose rear center console; vibration and popping noise over bumps, replaced and balanced all four tires, replaced stabilizer bar links, rims were out of round; scrunching noise while turning, rack and pinion replaced; experiencing whistling noise; hard jerk and popping noise when shifting, gear selector slippage; a/c vent squeaking, a/c vent readjusted.

The exhaust pipe had some way bent which caused the pipe to get close to the rear fender.the rear fender was made of some sort of plastic which melted from the exhaust pipe.the owner was told "the only way that the pipe could have been disfigured if you ran over a speed bump".the owner does not recall doing that or over loading the truck.tsreconditioned bumper, absorber, reflector had to be replaced.

Dt:the caller said vehicle stalled without warning several times. She stated that it did start back up. She took the vehicle tothe dealer three times. Dealer said they fixed it each time. She sent manufacturer a letter on the problem and other problems. Also, the callerstated that she had the ignition switch replaced, and now when she takes it out of park something pops. Dealer will not do anything else to help her with the ignition switch.the day time running lights did not stay on,the consumer heard wind noise coming from the vehicle, the cigarette lighter did not work, there was a popping noise when the consumer placed the vehicle into gear.

Major safety concern: 2002 mercury mountaineer awd, purchased with around 79000 miles, in 2007.a few days after purchase started shifting really hard into 3rd gear, called dealer and he said to have transmission fluid changed, changed that cost 100.00.seemed to help some, now at 100,000 miles or so car will not go over 30mph.driving vehicle in busy traffic and car only going up to 30 in a serious hazard.ford needs to be held accountable for this.too many 2002 are having exact same problem.car jerks into reverse, o/d flashes, check transmission light comes on , hard jerksand shudders into 3rd gear....come on how many more people have to give up hard earned money to fix fords mistakes???in process of trying to find a transmission shop to take this heapof junk to.

Hit the remote control button to open the rear hatch for the 2002 mercury mountaineer. The rear hatch opened only halfway automatically, as it is suppose to open further i pushed it up, without unusual force and the entire rear window shattered, and the encasement that held it hit me in the head rather hard. It is now without a window. This is the second window replacement. The first rear window was replaced in 2004 when, during a cold snap here in ny it spidered into a crack but did not shatter. When my husband took it to the dealer as it was still under warranty they argued at first, but then the phone started to ring and they decided it was an ongoing problem and design "flaw".

Of the many problems i've had since purchasing this vehicle, the latest takes the cake.here's the skinny of all my problems, with the latest motivating me to report a complaint to the nhtsa.hopefully, something can be done.here's a website of others with the same transmission issue:http://www.carsurvey.org/cgi-bin/fix_comment.plwhere do i start. I purchased this car with 38k miles and it's been a nightmare. First thing to go was a wheel bearing at 41k, got that fixed @ $200. Next to go @ 48k was the two calipers and new rotors on the front, cost $800. Next @ 52k was the a/c needed to be recharged, $150. Next @ 58k, the two calipers in the back has to be replaced, cost $300 (i found a good mechanic/friend).for the grand finale... I need to replace the transmission @ 61k, cost range from $1,800 to $3,400. I will fix it and dump it right away and sell it. A complete lemon!!! it should be reported to the nhtsa for an investigation.

Sudden flow of very hot air form the air vents.the problem happened when the air condition was off and the air blower or fan was turned on.however the problem now happens when the air condition is on.

Warning in owners manual stated do not modify headliner on vehicle with side air bags, also dealer put sunroof in vehicle from which headliner had to be taken out, this vehicle was modified with no regard for warning in owners manual. Contacted dealer, and no response from dealer or ford customer service.

Consumer noticed that the tail lights were inoperative. The tail lights stayedon while the vehicle was turned off. Consumer will contact the dealer in the near future.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while attempting to place fuel in the vehicle, the nozzle stopped after three gallons and gas began spilling out.the fuel gauge indicated that the gas tank was empty.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they performed an unknown repair.however, the failure continued.the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 78,140. Updated 04-07-08 the consumer stated the door ajar chime goes off while driving and the automatic door lock does not lock for 5 miles. Updated

While parking noticed a fuel smell coming inside ofvehicle.consumer backed out of the parking garage, andnoticed that gasoline was leaking fromunderneathvehicle.

This is a 2002 mercury mountaineer with a v8 engine.the vehicle accelerates on its own with no driver input from a stop.it lurches both in drive and in reverse.

My wife was pulling into a parking space when the vehicle surged forward resulting in a crash with a metal hand rail and two air conditioning units.no definitive cause has been established except.a witness says she heard an engine rev up just prior to the crash.

Upon purchase, a raw gas odor was noticeable--returned to dealer--no problem found; returned at 4000 miles with same problem--replaced fuel injector; third time major fuel leak from right side fuel rail at upper seal on cyl 3 & 4 o-ring replaced--dealer had us call tow service and the dealer took care of repairs under warranty--great concern about safety due to possible of a serious fire from fuel leakage onto hot engine.

I purchased 2002 mercury mountaineer on 08/31/01 and in less than a month the vehicle leaked fuel.the first incidenthappened on 09/26/01 while the vehicle was idling in parking the engine started leaking fuel and emptyed the tank in about 2 minutes.the vehicle towed in forrepairs that day and o-rings were replaced.the second incident happened on 10/03/01 while the vehicle was being driven on the interstate at 70 mph, and this time smoke began to come from under the hood.the vehicle was towed andrepaired one day later, and the repairs made were to replace the injector.the third incident happened on 10/17/01 while the vehicle was at an intersection wait at a signal light.the smell of fuel came in there the a/c vent and smoke was coming from under the hood.the vehicle was towed in for repairs that day and is still in for repairs since 10/17/01.i do not feel safe driving this vehicle and have made that known to the dealership and manufacter.i have requested a vehicle buy back and the only answer i get is to wait for more repairs.i fear for my life by driving this vehicle again.thank you virgia rhymes

Driving at normal speed of approximately 40 mph on a city street, the spark plug and coil shot out from the #2 cylinder. A large percussion banging sound emitted from under the hood which was the detectable evidence something had just gone desperately wrong with the engine.

The rear lift gate seemingly is open although all the doors of the car are closed it still shows a "door ajar" sign in the information panel in the dashboard.

I was driving my 2002 mercury mountaineer on vacation in florida 1400 miles from home with my kids, i was on the interstate 75 on alligator alley when i was coming up on two semi trucks, i applied the brake and instead of the cruise control shutting off it sped up fast sending me towards the semi trailers going about 85 mph, i slammed on the brakes and veered off the interstate onto the shoulder and grabbed the gear shift lever to downshift to slow it down and the shift lever broke of in my hand, i got the suv home and contacted the ford dealer and i was told that there is a recall on the cruise control for failure but that i have to pay around 1 thousand dollars for the shifter arm that broke off when the cruise control defect caused all of this in the first place and the shifter armshould be a recall also as there are thousands and thousands of instances of shifter arms breaking on these models.

Rear lifgate latch failure.unable to open rear liftgate in event of an emergency. Also rear glass liftgate pistions that hold up window within liftgate failure, lower onto persons head.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.the driver's side door would not close.the failure began when the weather was cold and then occurred during hot temperatures.currently, the failure is constant, which causes the door ajar warning light to remain illuminated.the interior dome light remains illuminated as well.no repairs have been made and the dealer has not been notified.the failure mileage was 80,000.

When shutting my rear hatch on my 2002 mercury mountaineer my lift cracked underneath the window.when i contacted ford they said that i would have to pay for this - i could not afford it.then my hatch was harder and harder to close.one day while trying to shut it the entire window and hatch fell on my head the latch came undone.now i hear the cylinder are a defect what about the entire hatch.this whole unit is a defect.

Mercury moutaineer 2003, the hatch of the car just came down and hit her, she jumped back and the door continued to close and the window shattered.contact learned that the car door has a safety recall and took it to the dealership for repair.contact was told that the safety recall had already been repaired on her car and that she would have to pay to have it repaired again.contact wants to know what she can do now.doesn't feel she is responsible because it is a safety recall.

Rear lifgate latch failure.unable to open rear liftgate in event of an emergency. Also rear glass liftgate pistions that hold up window within liftgate failure, lower onto persons head.

Iheard a scraping noise in the right rear brake when backing out of the garage, similar to the sound given when brake replacement was required. I tookthe 2002 mountaineer to a certified mechanic for brake replacement. When the right rear rotor was pulled the front parking brake pad fell out. On inspection the metal area thatattached the pad to the brake mechanism rusted through, allowing the pad to fall freely into the drum. The mechanic saidthe pad scrapping the drum when i was backing out of the garage was the noise i was hearing and it rotated with the wheel. He said the car could not pass ny state inspection because the emergency brake would not hold the car when applied , rendering the brake unusable in an emergency ,and demonstrated that to me. My wife has driven the car 98% of the time since i purchased it new in january2003. She never engaged the parking brake so the emergency brake pads, though rusty, were in good shape.

2002 mercury mountaineer awd v8 - approximately january and may 2009 both rear hub bearings went bad at 87,000 and 90,000 miles , both sets of emergency brake shoes were disintegrated when taken off . Rear coil springs are broken . Front differential box has leaked for some time now . Rear end axle seal has been leaking for some time now . Going on 4th set of brakes on front . June 2010 at 109,000 miles transmission finally went out - after acting up from time of purchase at 37,000 miles - it would slip when put in drive at first morning startup and would jerk erratically at low speeds - we have never pulled anything with vehicle .

2002 mountaineer stalls, transmission control assembly, main control valve, and gasket had to be replaced.the lift gate was sticking, and while closing it, the glass shattered, the glass was recalled, and was suppose to have been fixed. The oil light illuminated. The trim on the front door fell off while driving.there was a grinding noise coming from the rear wheels, it was determined that there was severe rust on the brake componets, the park brake shoes fell apart due to corrosion, therear wheel bearing and knuckle assembly had excessive rust.

Right rear parking brake pad fell apart as mechanic was attempting to do a rear brake job.was told this was a common problem in both 2002 through 2004 mercury mountaineers and ford explorers.can't believe a parking brake pad would just fall apart in pieces when the parking brake is never used.

While attempting to put the vehicle in park, the gear shifter snapped in half. It is currently attached by just a wire. The vehicle is currently stuck in reverse, and the key is stuck in the ignition. It snapped off from the housing unit, part of the bolt is left in the gear shifter and the rest is inside the steering column. The battery had to be disconnected, since unable to take the key out.

I recently decided to be #teamford....unfortunately i'm disappointed.my truck now has the o/d light flashing excessively. The truck goes in to 3rd gear but thumps & goes down into 2nd & then 1st. I was told the repairs will run me about $1800. I really wish i would've stuck with chevrolet. .... I've used google to see is anyone else having this problem....& yes they are. Ford should really own up to this & fix this problem our do a recall. This is sad. Boy do i miss my chevy.....

I just finished getting gas. I turned on the ignition and put the car in reverse and the gear shift snapped off in my hand. It is just dangling. I had to put the emergency brake on and turn the car off immediately so that it would roll back and crash into someone else car or just a pedestrian.i paid to have the car towed to my home for $59. Upon going home, i called several ford dealerships who clearly were familiar with the problem because i was given a quote for the part and labor immediately after i told them about the issue.i took it one step further and went online to check for recalls.there weren't any recalls however, i have read several forums online and this seems to be an ongoing issue with the 2002 mercury mountaineers and 2002 ford explorers.this is ridiculous and i am outraged and i feel ford needs to take ownership regarding this issue.

While driving at around 35 mph the o/d light started flashing, error message check transmission and check engine light stayed on. The vehicle started shifting erratically from a start then had problems shifting into gears.i brought it to my mechanic and decided to change, clean and flush transmission fluids. This did not solve the problem. I then went on line to find cures for this problem at ford motor co web site and there was no information there . I searched the web for similar problems and came up with over 500 complaints with ford blazers' and mountaineers 2002 through 2004 transmission related problems with the same symptoms..5r555 solenoid pack.i found a company that claimed the problem is the transmission 5 solenoid pack needing a up grade and this should solve the problem through usa industries in bay shore ny. Purchasedthis oem ford upgrade packet, installed this miracle part and the problems were stillthere. Now usa industries doesn't want to hear about refunding my monies even though i am still in the refund time limit.. Hopefully ebay will resolve there poor customer relations issue. Ford claims i need to have a complete transmission replacement at approximately $2500.00. I spoke to several ford certified mechanics and they told me that ford is aware of this issue but are hesitant to issue a recall since there have been no deaths.. Can that be for real????? is anyone else ready to stand up to ford for a recall demand on our cars??

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated the while reversing and turning left or right, the rear end of the vehicle would shutter. The contact mentioned that the failure progressed to a loud noise while in drive or reverse. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated the transfer case needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

At 99,000 miles the transmission started to jump slightly as it shifted gears.then the od light came on when i tried to go in reverse and it didn't want to move.then, when it was put in drive it jerked violently.the vehicle has not been abused or hotrodded.

Transmission , i read this is a comon problem with this year and model.

Transmission slips on my 2002 mercury mountaineer 6 cylinder awd. There is a common problem with this transmission throughout 2002 mercury mountaineer owners. Why has there been no recall on this transmission.

While driving to work one morning all i here was ding ding ding od/off started flashing . Sec later check transmission light came on now when i drive putting foot on the paddle to go it will idle up i release and it will shift n go. Aamco saying that i need a rebuilt tranny that's bs with all what i have been reading it's just a rip off i don't have $3500 to get this fix. Now seeing not once not twiceso many complaints i read that people paid for 2 or more tranny for the vehicle's and nothing is been done about it. And the ford deals knows about it..... Do a human being has to lose their life before ford dealer's can own up to there responsibility? if they was in our shoes they would want the same thing vice versethey say u reap what you sow. Please please please help up just fix our transmission that's all.. Another thing abs light stays on check engine light stays on the seat belt light stays on all my windows doesn't let down now wtf?

Changing gear and gear shift broke off in hand.

I purchased a used vehicle from redefined auto sales located in skokie, il on 3/11/17. Since then i have spent over $1500.00 in cost for repairs on this vehicle, beginning with i had to get the oil changed the same day that i bought the vehicle because the change oil required light came on as soon as i exited the expressway, i almost got into a serious accident on the expressway in route from the car dealership because a motorist tried to cut me off and that is when i discovered that the horn was not working. The next day the power door locks stopped working and things just has went down hill since then, the vehicle is in the shop right now as i'm typing this, i have not driven the vehicle anywhere other than back and forth to repair shops. I filed a complaint with the bbb but nothing was done about the complaint because the business responded saying the vehicle was used and i rejected the response and then received an email from the bbb saying that the case was closed. This vehicle was a lemon with a lot of issues and none of those issues were disclosed to me when i purchased the vehicle.

I had driven my 2002 mountaineer to work, i gently pulled back on the gear shift, to put it into park, and it broke off in my hand.i had to leave it in drive and also had to leave my keys in the car.i didn't really worry about it being stolen because it won't go anywhere.i feel that ford should have put a recall on this model of mountaineer, do to so many problems.transmissions, auto windows, gear shifts, wheel welds, and now a fire may start in the car even if it's not running.really, i guess we will have to wait till one of them blows up, killing someone, before ford will listen.

I was parked in the driveway at my babysitter's home. I attempted to put the car from park to reverse and the entire gear shift lever fell off in my hand. I had no warning of any problem prior to this happening and was very much shocked that i could break in two a metal object in a car that should last for many many years. At the time this problem occurred the vehicle had approximately 65,000 miles on it. This problem seems to be happening again, even after having the part replaced by gary crossley ford in liberty, mo. I am much more aware now of the problems that can happenand am noticing wear on the rubber casing around the gear shift lever. I do not want this problem to happen again to any one. It was very distressing to have the gear shift lever fall off!

2002 mercury mountaineer transmission failure!common problem and should be a factory recall.thousands to repair!!!!!

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle began to jump and vibrate violently. The wheel bearings were replaced twice in eight months and a local mechanic also performed a diagnostic test. The mechanic removed the drive shaft because it caused the vehicle to stay in 4 wheel drive consistently which was why the vehicle experienced an uneven ride. The contact was concerned because the vehicle needed four wheel drive in the winter. The failure mileage was 90000 and the current mileage was 118000.

While driving the "od" light started flashing and the vehicle would not shift from 2nd to third gear. It would just rev up. If you let off the gas it would usually shift into 3rd gear. I was going to try to check the fluid but couldn't find the dipstick. I checked the manual and found out there is none. When i checked online for help i found all the other complaints that were exactly like mine. It is very disappointing that ford will not issue a recall on this obviously poorly designed transmission. This is a very expensive part for an owner to replace and is a safety issue as you could lose the ability to accelerate at a critical moment. With as many complaints as i am seeing online there should definitely be a recall. I hope it doesn't take somebody getting hurt or killed for action to be taken.

While driving my vehicle the o/d light starts flashing very fast.i can hear the vehicle revving as i am pressing on the gas.all of a sudden a hard pop and then the vehicle starts to accelerate.i try to continue home and the vehicle gets to around 30 mph and does it again, as time goes on (same drive) it gets harder to shift into gear around 20 mph and stays at that speed. Vehicle is a 2002 mercury mountaineer with 150,000 miles.

The issue with my car the transmission i was driving it one the interstate when i started to her a roar coming from my engineand that when i noticed my rpm was off the chart and i started to go slower by the minute and as i called up my mechanic he said it was my transmission and being from another state and only having 100 bucks in the pocket is not good so now im stuck in a town with no job now needing to get my transmission fixed and not having acar to drive i cant get a job not having a job makes me lose my car and having no home left for me that's just not right ford should b the ones in my shoes.

When going 25-30 mph vehicle will not shift.it actually kicked the vehicle back. Od light started to flash then service engine soon light came on.been doing this since. Went to go get mountaineer read and of coarse..the transmission..something needs to be done otherwise this might eventually lead to a lawsuit after reading all of the complaints on the exact same thing.

After reading other complaints regarding 2002 mountaineers and explorers, i can hardly type i am so frustrated. The number of power train complaints for this year, make and model are astounding. The transmission in my 2002 mountaineer (aka money sucker) needs to be replaced. The car is currently being fixed at the ford dealer for $3500. The car has always had a funny shutter when shifting from 2nd to 3rd as well as hesitation when dropping into reverse and drive. While driving in icy conditions yesterday my wife thought her tires were spinning when she was trying to proceed at a stop light. She thankfully avoided being rear ended by a semi that was able to swerve onto the apron and avoid contact with her. She was able to limp the car to the side of the road where she then called me. After i arrived, i attempted to get the car to the ford dealership where it could be diagnosed. However, the car would only reach 30mph and the rpms were at 4,000 to 5,000 at that speed. The overdrive light flashed and the check engine light came on. I parked it and removed the battery cables for 10 minutes to see if the computer would reset itself ? this did not help. In fact, the car would not even move in drive or reverse. Had the dealer pick it up to get it fixed. This car has 108,000 miles on it ? not exactly knew this is true, but it sounds like i was one of the lucky ones to get that many miles out of it ? from the reports i've read on the internet. Have also experienced and replaced front left bearings, rear left bearing and have the problem with the steering that many have reported on this vehicle (binding, tension, can't make full turns, popping sounds).

I got into my mountaineer and notice a familiar rumble.my wheel bearins went bad again!i will be replacing these for the 4th time now.this is on top of having to have the transmission rebuilt to the tune of $3700.i love to drive this car but it constantly needs repairs and the repairs need repairs.i can not afford a new car but i can't keep fixing this one!!!i have also had to replace the intake manifold only to find out ford had a fly by night law suit and never notified people to have there intakes checked so that was another $300 just for the part.i think ford should help us out that helped them out.

Rear wheel bearings failing for a second time. First time was on 3/15/08.

2002 2002 mercury mountaineer developed problems with the transmission.*mr the transmission did not shift smoothly, but would hang up.the transmission would not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear without the consumer taking his foot off the gas and the engine would race to high rpm's.

I was parking the car when the gear shift stick broke and ended in my hand the whole part.

I pulled into a parking lot and had the engine running while it was still in drive.i had my foot on the brake pedal and was looking through the center console to find my phone.after finding my phone, i shut the vehicle off and pulled the key out of the ignition.i returned to the vehicle roughly 45 minutes later to find that i had left the vehicle in drive and it had allowed me to shut the engine off and remove the key from the ignition while it was still in drive.luckily, the parking lot was level and the vehicle did not roll away.ever since that day, the vehicle will allow me to remove the key from the ignition, regardless of what position the shift lever is, as long as the engine is turned off.

This is a 2002 mercury mountaineer with a v8 engine.the vehicle accelerates on its own with no driver input from a stop.it lurches both in drive and in reverse.

Drove to grocery store and attempted to place car in park and unable to get it into park.it will go in every other gear but will not go into park. Already had to replace gear shift after the gear shift arm broke off in my hand while trying to get it out of park a few months ago.now looking at more money on this piece of junk car. Now must leave car in gear and leave keys in the car. This is just an accident waiting to happen with young children around.

2002 mercury mountaineer -drove my daughter to school and parked the car.came back a few minutes later to go home.started the car and found that the suv was stuck in park.tried to push break and pull back gear shift to place car in drive and the gear shift broke in hand.currently at shop.told car will need entire new steering column. Also suv has been having problems shifting.major delay when placed into gear until it actually goes in gear.there is usually a pause and then car will jerk into place.

The shift lever snapped off, in reverse, while attempting to put into park.the lever broke in such a way that the vehicle was stuck in gear with no means to put in park.the base of the lever that operates the gear change mechanism appears to be made of porous metal.i was forced to leave my vehicle in reverse, with the keys stuck in the ignition, until i was able to arrange a tow.thankfully i was not in traffic, on a hill when this happened.i was able to place some items behind the wheels to prevent rolling (emergency brake does not work well).this appears to be a common problem as there are numerous documented complaints (enough that a parts manufacturer has come up with a more durable replacement part).

2002 mercury mountaineer - gear shift mechanism failed when trying to shift out of park.vehicle repaired by billy-howel ford lincoln mercury, cumming, georgia.

Bought used from a dealer 10-05 with 71328 miles. Checked out by mechanic. No problems w/ drive train, tranny, or suspension, except to change fluids in differentials (rear & front).did this first week we owned it & water found in rear differential. 1st owner's records came with car. All services were done (no mention of problems). I serviced it every 2-3000 miles. On 4-27-06 the tranny flushed, & the rear differential & transfer case serviced.mileage was 85857. 2 new tires put on front on 5-25-06 (flat tire). On way home (18 mi. Into 35 mi. Drive), front end started to fail. Couldn't find source of leaking fluid. Drive home. Next morning, tried to return to mechanic with car. Made it about 25 of the 35 miles to town before front end failed. Mechanic showed us the gears from the differential--the "teeth" were sheared completely off 1/3 of it--remaining teeth sheared down by at least 50%.front differential was replaced, also 4 ball joints, seals for both shafts, brake pads (from differential fluid damage) were replaced. All 4 wheels had bearings repacked. 2 more tires bought. Within 1 week, began hearing noise again from drive train. Car back at mechanic on 6-20-06. The noise now from rear transfer case. It was flushed 2 times (fluid filled with fine metal fragments). The rear differential fluid also changed. Mechanic said 4-6 months until rear end failed. I've now lost the rear end--also have to replace all 4 sets of wheel bearings & replace all axles. Will re-assess front differential after rear is fixed. We've contacted ford, no recalls for our car. They'll not make any repairs or reimburse for faulty equipment. I'm not original owner & warranty has expired. It doesn't qualify for state lemon law (mileage). There's at least 31 problems and 18 complaints on your website that i've had in the 1 year since i bought this car. This is a ford issue. I just want to re-coup my $4000+ in repair costs & trade it off for a non-ford suv.

Vehicle was parked. After starting the vehicle, with foot on brake pedal and parking brake released, i attempted to shift from park into drive and the gearshift broke off in my hand. Vehicle had to be towed todealership and i am awaiting the estimate for repair costs.this is my second ford suv to do this after 80k miles.the repair have been going for around $1300 or more.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that the vehicle was able to shift into gear when the vehicle was off. The contact stated that the key was not in the ignition at the time of the failure. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

I, as so many others, have a failing transmission in my 2002 mercury mountaineer.from 2nd to 3rd gear it refuses to shift properly and when it does it is extremely hard.others have experienced this condition while the vehicle was still under warranty and it is my belief that ford realizes that the transmission is defective but refuses to do a recall.i was almost rear ended because the vehicle lost its forward momentum between the shifts.i feel as if this is a dangerous situation and it should be addressed.

Transmission will not shift into second gear and from what i am told is that for my year and model it is a mass problem not just a isolated incident my check transmission light came on the display my over drive light was flashing rapidly and only drives at 20mph now.

Drive train vibration. *nlm

Gear shift lever broke out of steering column. Totally broken metal piece.

I own a 2002 mercury mountaineer 4.6l awd. After buying this car i had heard about how big of a lemon the transmissions are, and on january 27th i found this out for myself. First my car began shifting very harshly.then my o/d off light began flashing, check engine light came on, and check transmission lcd came on.i lost third gear on the middle of the highway and had to drive 9 miles home going only 25 mph.then i found out that it is going to cost $2500+ to fix the problem.unfortunately i'm a single mother and full-time student, so my car is just going to sit for a few months until i can afford to fix it.ford should be held accountable for this problem. I have heard far too many complaints and no one has done anything about it .

The transmission on my 2002 mercury mountaineer. The o/d light is flashing, and seems trans is slipping even worse. I have had it to the dealership many times since i bought it new, and they never could find the problem. Now it has been out of warranty for quiet some time and has became a huge problem. I looked on the internet and noticed a ton of complaints on this exact issue and was hoping it would be ground for a recall.

2002 mercury mountaineer.the transmission went out at 66000 mile and 1 month after extended warranty.called ford costumer assistance center and the person said she has never heard of this problem.went on-line (edmunds.com, carsurvey.org, etc. And saw one after another complaints about exact same problem.the check transmission warning light first went on at 59000 mile (still under warranty).but i read the manual first before taking it to dealer.the manual stated suv was up for flashing the transmission fluid at 60000 miles.flushed the fluid and warning light went away.six months later transmission warning lightis back (warranty has just expired).found out there is a recall on the same transmission on the explorer but the mountaineer (which is same truck with different branding) does not.so why is this the case?luckily for me i was not in the freeway went the transmission went out.

I own a 2002 mercury mountaineer mileage 72465. At this time it started to shuddering during up shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. I took it to pitcock auto repair in richardson, tx. They did a diagnostic test and found no codes they flashed the computer to reset all settings and i drove the vehicle for about 10 days and returned it to them who then took it to a eagle transmission in plano tx. They also did a diagnostic check but the transmission had no codes! it was then removed and over hauled it was then found out that the #1,2 clutches were almost gone and the # 3 was completely worn out. The transmission was over hauled and test driven when a over drive light came"on" the transmission was again removed and all items were checked again reinstalled during the test drive again the over drive light came "on". They removed and replaced the valve body test driven and the same problem the transmission was again removed and the following items were changed(# of time changed) valve body (2),converter(2),flashed computer (2), replaced the seals/gaskets (3) and many test drives with same problem! eagle transmission was on the net with other transmission repair people and all of them could not help them trouble shoot this problem as none of them had ever seen this happen! the vehicle was then taken to a local ford dealer who after doing a diagnostic test told eagle they would have to replace all items again! the manger of eagle had just received the gears , september 2006and in it they had the correction for this problem with a kit from sonnax with the part number of 56947j-15k, they order the kit and it corrected the problem! all this happened just after the warranty expired. To have a ford dealer who had no idea or what to do to fix the problem was some thing that i or eagle didn't expect! i was lucky that i had taken it to eagle and pitcock as i could have paid twice what i agreed to which was $2500.00.

Our mountaineer has 84,257 miles on it and the transmission already has to be rebuilt. The transmission shop told me there was nothing that i did wrong or i could of done to prevent it, that this is a common problem with this transmission. The dealership and ford won't help us because the warranty is up.

O/d light blinking - hesitation when shifting while driving occurring each time the vehicle was operating - took it to transmission expert who fixed for 2000 because dealer quoted 3500! trans guy asked if it was 2002 or 2003 as soon as he heard the make and model. Cracked liftgate that was fixed in the first year of owning the vehicle but second time it cracked the dealer would not fix it and quoted $700 ford would not fix either.an obvious defect!

Powertrain issue.at 79,700 miles, my 2002 mercury mountaineer required a transmission rebuild which cost me 2500.00.apparently there is a bad solenoid and bands that totally busted inside the transmission. After seeing other reports on this, i wanted to add mine to the list.

2002 mercury mountaineer, transmission is bucking, over drive light flashing, check transmission light on. Also rotated tires, changed brakes, and had rotors cut yet there still is a pulsating felling in front end when stopping.

I have a 2002 mercury mountaineer with 58,000 miles.i bought this car, so my wife would have something safe to drive.so far, i believe that this car is unsafe.the transmission doesn't shift right.if she were to try to cross a busy intersection or to attempt to merge and this were to occur, it could be a tragedy.i looked through your service bulletins.i believe what i refer to is documented. 10014089.this car is almost new.ford should pay for it to be fixed.please force a recall! thanks.

The vehicle is a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The incident/issue involves the transmission. For model year 2002 & 2003, ford installed the transmission 5r55w in the explorer and mountaineer vehicles. The transmission typically gives out between 25,000 and 60,000 miles.mine gave out at a very busy intersection with my two children. Luckily, we did not get hit, but upon researching this issue it is huge. There are two websites concerning this issue of transmission failure with these two models and year.ford has been notified, as well as you, the nhtsa, and nothing is being done.you have received complaints, and according to your own monthly investigation reports, from 10/2007 to 03/2008, you have not even investigated it.it's going to take numerous people to die before any action is taken on your behalf.this is a huge problem with this transmission and the number of these vehicles on the road.....do something!!

As i was accelerating nothing happened.the transmission failed and didn't go anywhere and then it jerked just as a car was approaching, which made the other car swerve and it almost got into an accident. 2002 mercury mountaineers are notorious for bad transmissions and they are a danger.ford refuses to take any responsibility for their poorly built transmissions.

My 2002 mountaineer has had transmission problems since we purchased the vehicle in new in late 2001. It has always had a very hard shift from 2nd to 3rd gear.we have complained to the service department during the warranty period and they found nothing wrong with the car.at 57,734 miles we had to replace the torque converter and solenoid assembly for a total bill of $1,438.00.my car now has 90,000 miles.on may 2 2008 i was driving to town to pick up my children and suddenly my car would not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear.the overdrive light went crazy and my check transmission light came on. I brought my car to the dealer and they reported that my vehicle will need a new transmission for a cost of $3,200.this problem poses serious safety issues.my vehicle malfunctioned on a road with a speed limit of 55 mph.i could have been seriously injured by another car since my car could not move more than 25 mph when it malfunctioned. This vehicle has been well maintained and is only used to transport myself and my children around town.we have owen many other vehicles with more than 200,000 miles on them and have never experienced any problems like this.

About once a year we have had a problem with our transmission.after this happening so many times i decided to check online for anyone else with the same problem.can not believe how many have the same problem but still no recalls.my husband knew the first time they tried to fix the problem they were just putting a "band-aide" on the problem and not truly fixing it.metal shavings were found the first time and the transmission shifts rough and slips.also the vehicle accelerates without putting foot on gas pedal.problem is extremely bad when going into reverse.

Transmission: upon parking the vehicle consumer heard a noise. Vehicle vibrated, upon trying to use the vehicle again the gears would not go into reverse or drive.

Transmission has been repaired 3 times.the last was jan 2009 when it was completely rebuilt.

O/d light blinks and transmission shifts hard or misses shifts. Feels like tranny might be about to go... Started about a year ago but went away after changing tranny fluid. Now it is back, issue is worse, and seems like it is here to stay.

My mercury mountaineer is having transmission issues. I have read through everything i could find and apparently this is a very common problem with the 2002 fords yet they are unwilling to do anything to fix it. I was driving down the freeway with my 7 month old daughter when the transmission decide to slip out of gear and luckily i was in the slow lane and able to get onto the emergency lane without getting hit because i was no longer accelerating od light started blinking right before this happened. I talked to my mechanic and was informed that fords transmission in 2002 was bad and he rebuild/replaces more on that vehicle than any other vehicle and they should be recalled. I called for and they said in short its my problem. Now i am looking at a 2000 dollar repair because of ford not doing anything about there faulty transmission.

The transmission on the early model 2002's go bad early. Research on the internet revealed many many complaints. I found a few that said that ford was aware of the problem. Redesigned the transmission in the middle of the year, but will not correct the problem.

On dec. 19, 2008, the o/d light began to flash and then on dec.26th the service engine soon light came on. As i was driving thecar began to rev up when i was not mashing the gas. I have not driven it since. I called the ford dealership and was told to do a diagnostic test on it, it would cost $98 per issue. I searched the issue online and found that many people have complained about this and have paid thousands of dollars to have it fixed. I would like to know if this is a recallable issue due to the about of complaints? i just spent $300 having the door ajar sensor fixed, something that others have also complained about.

Od light starting flashing, then check transmission light starting flashing, then 3 and 5th gear started snatching, transmission went out. I heard alot of these suvs are having problems just like mine.

2002 mercury mountaineerv6 awd 130,000miles! transmission problems o/d light flashing one day causing transmission not to shift correctly. Ten minutes later start the vehicle and light not on and transmission shifts fine. Happens on several occasions.several with similar vehicles have reported same problems! also has wheel bearing issues!

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. While thevehicle was parked, a 19 month old toddler sitting in the driver's seat moved the gear shifter into reverse without the keys being in the ignition. The rear door was open andthe vehicle crashed into a gate and rolled into the middle of the street. The rear door and the gate were damaged.there were no injuries. A police report was not filed.the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and currentmileages were 120,929.

Transmission slipped between 2nd and 3rd gears, and between 3rd and 4th. Rpm raced high. Od light would flash, check engine light came on. Rpm's would race high, but the vehicle would not move, then suddenly catch. Transmission had to be rebuilt with only 56k miles.two weeks in the shop, $600. Repair bill. Vehicle has been properly maintained at the dealership and has all service records.

I own a 2007 mercury mountaineer with 46,000 miles.without warning the transmission started not shifting from gear to gear.the computer indicated "check transmission" and the overdrive off light began to flicker.i promptly stopped the vehicle and called for a roll back to have it taken to a transmissin shop.($80 tow fee)the shop diagnosed the problem as 3rd gear wrong ratio.the shop owner said that he thought it was a broken sprag.he replaced the transmission with a ford factory remanufactured unit at the cost of $2813.00.i have since heard that there is a problem with the transmissions in the 2002 ford model suv's as well as in the mercury's.is there anything being done to hold the manufacture liable for the expenses incurred?

I went to shift my car into reverse and the stick shift located next to steering wheel came off in my hand, went to dealer and the part was $800.00 for the whole steering column, the part that broke was a small piece holding the stick, but dealer said it had to replace all of it. Since i could not afford that amount i searched for a used part and everyone said it was very common on these cars and i finally found one for $200.00 but have not had it installed due to costs. And to add to my problems i was driving on the freeway and the od light starts to flicker and after numerous calls and researching the problem was told that it is the transmission and would probably need to repair/replace and that it is a common problem with these cars.

From the time the consumer purchased the vehicle there have been problems with it.the transmission in the vehicle made a loud clunking sound.the dealer replaced the transmission once but the consumer continued to experience problems.the head liner on the ceiling fell down.

Dt:the vehicle's transmission slipped, jumped and made clunking noises while in park, reverse or while the consumer was driving.the vehicle was taken to the shop several times for numerous things such as the ignition switch. She took her vehicle to the shop this time and they said it was her transmission. Her vehicle only has 41000 miles. She started smelling a burning smell and that's when she took it into the shop. She has only had the vehicle 45 days and has already had all these problems.

Whenbrakes are appliedand makinga sudden stop vehicle idles in neutral. Then, jumps into drive. Whengas pedal is depressedvehicle will not respond. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

The vehicle quickly shifts whenever you accelerate, it's rather jerky and startling. It seems as though the gears are changing incorrectly thus causing a jerky motion. I have notified the dealer and was told that this was a normal reaction, which i disagree. I most recently contacted the mercury home office, who suggested that i take it to the dealer for a diagnostics check. I saw similar complaints on this issue and thought that i should report my problem.

2002 mercury mountaineer - transmission failed several times on way to work this morning while pulling onto highways.car taken to transmission shop and we have been told that the transmission is gone and will cost $2,400 to repair.mechanic also stated that this is a known problem in mountaineers but has not been recalled as it is not deemed a safety hazard.apparently the car maker has not been in such a car when this happens on a busy freeway!we also had no indications of a problem prior to this happening.

I had no warning that the automatic transmission in my 2002 mercury mountaineer at 55,000 miles was going out.the o/d light came on flashing and the check transmission light came on flashing.the speed of the vehicle would not accelerate past 20 mph.i immediately took it to the mercury dealership and they repaired the leaking differential seals in the rear of the vehicle and the pinion seals in the front of the vehicle.they checked the transmission fluid and it was full.after 424.00 the problem was still there.took vehicle to transmission specialty shop and the vehicle is in the shop at this hour having the transmission yanked out and repaired.this is my first ford vehicle and my last.there seems to be a transmission issue regarding ford/mercury vehicles and there should have been something done about this long before now.

I have an 2002 mercury mountaineer had the transmission rebuilt6 months ago been back to the transmission shop 7 times...three times for a synlan pack??or so that's what he (the mechanic) has told me .

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while driving approximately 50 mph, the contact applied pressure to the brakes and heard a grinding sound.he then began to smell something burning and noticed smoke underneath the vehicle.he inspected the vehicle and did not notice any leaking.the following day he noticed an extensive amount of oil on the ground and the vehicle was pulling.the vehicle was inspected by a mechanic and the contact was informed that oil was coming from three different places and traveling to the rear differential.the dealer and the manufacturer have not been notified.the current mileage was 118,169 and failure mileage was 118,000.

My transmission failed while i was driving on the freeway with my child in the car. This cause my car to "buck" and come to almost complete stop. Thankfully i was in the right lane and able to get off onto the shoulder. My car then would only go into 1st and 2nd gear. It would not shift to 3rd. I took it to a service center (actually 3 of them) who told me i need a new transmission. This is an extremely dangerous situation occurring with these cars.there were not tell tail signs. It was not slipping or rattling previous to this. In searching the internet on google i find there are thousands of people who are have experienced this same problem with mercury or ford 2000-2003 vehicles. Why isn't there a recall on this part. This is unacceptable. Eventually someone is going to get hurt. This repair is going to cost me approx. $3000. In addition to this one of my seat belts stopped working. When buckled it comes undone when i am driving. This is a rear passenger seat belt where my child sits. He can not refasten it by himself. I no longer seat him in that particular seat. But how long before the other stop working as well. For some reason your website will not take this number. I just called ford and they verified the #.

In my 2002 mercury mountaineer (75k miles), the transmission pump suddenly failed, luckily the car was parked at home when we noticed the issue.the ford dealership wants $1500 to replace the pump since they have to tear apart the transmission to get to the pump.according the technician, the transmission has no signs of any problems (no metal shavings, fluid looks great, no wear).ford stated the vehicle was too old and had too many miles for ford to take any kind of responsibility.ford stated it was outside their 3 yr / 36,000 mile responsibility.ford will do nothing.1. None, one day i went to drive the vehicle and every gear i shift to acted like it was in neutral.2. The pump failure happened once, then needed towed to the dealer for repair.3. The transmission pump was rebuilt (parts - $200, labor - $1300).

While taking off from a complete stop after heavy or moderate braking the vehicle's engine will rev for about 2 seconds when the gas pedal is applied, then the vehicle will harshly jolt forward and start accelerating.

Dt: about two years ago owner purchased the vehicle 2002 mercury mountaineer. Right away owner complained ofaccelerationproblem. While driving on the road vehicle felt like it was shifting when it accelerated. Vehicle usuallydid this about 25-30mph or even higher speeds. The rpms would raise and increase speed. It felt like a transmission problem because it would accelerate, and raise the rpms without warning. There were no lights to indicate a problem. The first time the vehicle was taken to the dealer they didn't know what the problem was. The dealership was cooperative. The dealer replaced about half the transmission because they were thinking that it was a transmission problem. The problem has remained about the same and was still going on. When it accelerated by itself it spedup about 5-10 mph. The rpms went upby about 1000. Owner would like to make the office of defect investigation investigatorsaware that he would like to have someone come and check out the vehicle, and even take the vehicle away for further analysis if they would like to. Heanother vehicle to drive, andinsisted about getting the problem with the accelerator repaired.

On my 2002 mercury mountaineer, the transmission failed and has to be rebuilt at 70,000 miles. After reading several websites, it is apparent that this has been a very common and ongoing problem that should qualify it for a recall.

I bought this mountaineer in early 2007 with 62,000 miles on it.from the start it shifted very rough.it has progressively worsened until this week when my wife was driving it would not shift out of second gear at all and was nearly broadsided with four children in the vehicle because she could not move.took it to a repair shop and was informed that i needed to have the transmission fixed.from other comments i have read this seems to be a fairly common problem with this vehicle. Also had to have the rear differential replaced at around 75,000 miles which seems fairly ridiculous, and a bearing has gone out twice on the same wheel.this vehicle doesn't seem to be built to last.

Wife driving to work when car stopped moving.pulled off street (near a car shop), paid $100 for them to do a diagnostic check and they said that gears and belt blew out and that he used to work with ford and that this is a common problem in earlier 2000's suvs (explorer and mountaineers).~$3000 to fix by them.researched on line and saw all of the problems people are having.something needs to be done before someone gets killed.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while driving (mph unknown) the vehicle would not accelerate.the mechanic stated that the transmission band broke and was the cause of the failure.in addition, they informed him of a tsb regarding his year, make and model.the manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to a ford dealer for further assistance.the failure and current mileages were 60,482.

My wife was driving the mountaineer and the check transmission light came on and the o/d light started flashing.we took it to the local mechanic and they said we probably needed a new transmission.we then took it to a transmission specialists and they confirmed we needed to rebuild the transmission. They replaced all seals and valves, torque converter, solenoid pack, transfer case, prndl switch, at a cost of $2500.after reading about several transmission complaints for this model year of mountaineer, i felt i should report this complaint.

Experiencing transmission issues at 75k miles. Took it to shop who reported these transmissions are notoriously bad, replacing some at 60k miles and most by 100k. Mine needs to be replaced at a cost of $2500. Problem is use of aluminum within metal and fast wear. Ford should be held accountable for making poor quality products. Transmissions should have a much greater life than 75k miles. Problems noticed - slipping out of gear while driving, not engaging gear when selected, not shifting into higher gear (overrevving),, clunking shifts. Danger arises when you select gear, accelerate and nothing happens and suddenly it pops into gear which causes vehicle to lunge forward.

The transmission in this vehicle is defective. Their should be a recall on this model which is a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The problem is costing all of fords customers alot of money average cost is 2600 dollars. They know about this problem and will not help even with some of the repair cost. This is not acceptable for any company to get away with. Please do something about this. Thank you

Serious transmission trouble.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that the gears failed and would not shift from the park position intermittently. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The contact believed the column shift to be the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. The vin was unavailable. Updated 01/26/118ljupdated 02/11/11

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while driving 55 mph and towing a camper, the overdrive off light illuminated.the vehicle also skipped gears.the dealer stated that the transmission fluid needed to be changed, but the contact declined to have it changed.the vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist who stated that the servo piston in the transmission was worn, which damaged the bands and drums.the transmission specialist made the repair.the failure mileage was 67,678and current mileage was 67,800. The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated the vehicle had a very hard shift for a few months. While driving the transmission failed and the overdrive light came on prior to the failure.the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times since it was purchased and was always told that nothing was wrong with the transmission. The dealer recently stated there was a blow hole at the bottom of the transmission and the hole expanded which caused the failure. The dealer told the contact there was a repair kit that could be used, but not until the transmission failed completely. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 75,000. Updated 10/18/11*lj updated 3/22/12 updated 8/11/12

Transmission problem. Less than 80,000 miles on vehicle.maintenance kept up to date.i started the car and began to drive away when suddenly it would not pick up speed and it kept jerking.it was not driveable at especially on a highway.everywhere i went told me it was the transmission.it cost me over $2,000.00 for another transmission.i am shocked to see so many others with transmission problems.i had no problems at all with this vehicle until this happened.i find it strange that i never had any other maintenance problems with this car and suddenly i lose a transmission.it sounds like a recall was due to myself as well as thousands of others with this same make and model.i was ready to make mercury my main choice of vehicle but after this, i don't think so.i would love to be included in a class action suit.

Transmission failed at around 100,000 miles. Had transmission rebuilt in july 2007. Now transmission is failing again this july 2008. I've had many shifting problems with the transmission and now there are times it won't shift at all.

Purchased 2002 mercury mountaineer from ford dealership in 2007. Transmission was slipping, took in two days later and still under warranty and informed new transmission put in. In august 2010, vehicle suddenly would not start, towed to dealership and informed the transmission was once again defective and sensors as well as cpu unit would need to be replaced. Researched on line on www.autobeef.com and noted many other defects on similar make, model and years with very similar problems. Approximate cost to fix $2,400 dollars.

2002 mercury mountaineer drive train slips, causing sudden jumps and jerks from; starts, slow down / acceleration, reverse to drive.bought car for wife for safe awd system for snow and slick roads, wife does not feel safe as lurching from stops almost caused her to cause a rear end accident.car has 65,000 miles had trans and front rear diff oil changed helped for about a week.is it possible to replace 2002 trans with 2005 trans as they seem to be rated better?

Copy of email sent to mercury division of ford motor company:on 12/9 i had to take my 2002 mountaineer, with only 46,000 miles on it, to finnin ford in dubuque. I was told i needed a "new" transmission!! i called ford to explain the problem and this past monday (12/12) i got a call back that ford was only going to pick up $1200.00 of a $3000.00 repair bill. Last night i picked up my vehicle from the dealership, but only after paying $1800.00!! the reply from the ford customer rep was that because i did not pay for the extended warranty, i was stuck for the major portion of this bill. This is not acceptable!!before i seek legal counsel, i would like to offer ford/mercury one last chance to do what should of been done in the first place for a very loyal customer (2 explorers & 2 mountaineers). Ford/mercury should have replaced this transmission at no charge. A transmission failure at 46,000 miles on a 2002 suv should not have happened and because it did, the manufacture should be fixing the problem at no charge to the customer. Oh, and did i mention that according to the dealership, this was the second such problem this week. If ford motor co. Has a transmission problem, they should own up to it and fix the problem. I am also a long standing member of consumer report, and i will be advising them of this issue as well as the national safety counsel.please respond to this email by 12/20/2005.thank you, dave grall.

2002 mercury mountaineer v8 awd 4.6 transmission failure.vehicle had under 60,000 miles, but had surpassed extended warranty time frame.reverse vehicle would not move.shifted very hard through gears.sometimes tacking at 3000 rpm. Took to a transmission specialist.repaired at a cost of 2600.00.have since returned vehicle to same place for same issues plus transmission overheat light and leaking transmission fluid.seat belts locked down for no reason.would not retract.called dealer, could not do anything because i was over restraint warranty by 3000 miles.have replaced all 4 seat belt restraints. Front air bag light stays on or blinks, or is off.called dealer, stated repair would not be covered due to mileage.i purchased this vehicle brand new june 2002.today it has 65,00 miles on it.is driven primarily on the highway for vacations.have had several small repairs that were covered under extended warranty.i am very disappointed in the performance of this vehicles drive train and safety restraint system to include seat belts and air bag issues.with as many complaints i see on line about the transmission and front air bag issues, seems to me something should be done to help those of us that purchased in good faith what should have been a great vehicle.i have been a ford/ mercury owner since 1971.this is the first vehicle i have had that had major issues.

1.) would feel vibrations during shifts, car would not not shift2.) truck rendered undrivable on first incident 8/02, second incident 8/03 caught early.3.) tork converter replaced both times.

The problem was not noticeable at first. The suv felt heavy when accelerating, it will jerk every now and then it was like this for a period of two days then the o/d light flashed rapidly and on the message center it displayed check transmission< the transmission constantly slips on every gear it revs without accelerating and when unexpected it catches itself and lunges jerks forward. It also makes a loud noise whenever the transmission shifts gears.this is everytime the vehicle is in use. I have no other means of transportaion . I took it to get diagnostics checked and they told me the transmission was faulty that there had been hundreds of complaints in my area dealing with the same make and model and year. I have not tried to correct the faulty tranny . I believe ford should consider the safety of it customers /consumers and should have a nationwide recall to repair such faulty transmission. I have been more close to crashing this year than all my years of driving. This faulty transmisssion is dangerous.

2002 mercury mountaineer - march 2005 - 46,000 miles solenoid was replaced cost $600 - december 2005 - 60,000 miles - transmission light on - in shop now to replace transmission or parts - cost of $2,300.i have four personal friends who have also had trouble with the ford engine.we had received numerous forms for extended warranty.seems that a 3 year old car bought new and still not paid for should have a good working transmission.this is a defect in mercury which should be fixed and consumers should not be forced to pay for this repair or for an extended warranty.why is mercury so insistent on an extended warranty?mercury must know that something is wrong with the transmission in the car.

Our 2002 mercury mountaineer's transmission blew after 116,000 miles.we have spoken with several transmission shops to get an estimate to fix it and they all told us the mountaineer is famous for this defect and no one, including nhtsa has done anything about this.i think it is grossly unjust that a car's transmission fails after only 90-100,000 miles and it's so common that it is apparently accepted.this is wrong.i am certain if you investigate the sheer number of mountaineers with this problem that it will prompt a recall and at least a fix at no cost to the unsuspecting owner who has faithfully maintained their vehicle in every way, only to have this happen.

The vehicle transmission slipped, jumped and made clunking noises.the steering column locked up.the rear hatch fell onto the consumers head which resulted in retinal detachment and balance trouble.*mr *ph*nlmpe04045.pco

The gears began making a whining and clicking noise as shifting occured at slower speeds.we were on a highway for approximately 1 1/2 hours when the o/d off light started flashing and the transmission downshifted from 5 th gear to 4th the remainder of the way.the words "check transmission" came on the odometer screen.

A violent jerk is present wheh shifting out of park.a noise can be heard on an intermittent basis before jerk occurs. Dealer has been contacted.

I have a 2002 mercury mountaineer that has 59,000 or so miles on it.i just had to have the transmission replaced.i now know that this was the first symptom though at the time i didn't think much about it, the car would not go into gear right away when i shifted into reverse or drive.it would rev a little before going into gear.then it started to vibrate when it would shift gears while driving. Ultimately, i had to have the transmission completely rebuilt,( replaced torque converter, the transmission case was repaired, the seals and bands replaced) at a cost of $3070.00.i had the work done ataamco so i don't know if the old parts are still available.

2002 mercury mountaineer- automatic transmission needed a total rebuild at 40,000 miles.

I bought a 2002 mercury mountaineer may 16th 2003 with approx 45,000 miles.about a week later we noticed that the shifting seemed to be jerky going from 2-3 gears.took it back into the person i bought it from and he called our local ford dealer who he purchased it from 2 days prior for me.they stated there were not bulletins out on the transmission.we had the transmission fluid checked and it appeared to be ok.a couple of months went by and then a soft shudder started when going to the next gears. I took it to a local transmission place and the tech stated that he had seen 2 of these incidents in the last 6 months.recommended i get rid of the vehicle as there was a flaw in the transmission design.in november of 2003 we had the transmission serviced (approx $250).cleared up the problem for a couple of months but reappeared and then went into a hard shift going to each gear.feb 2004 took it back to local ford dealer and they will charge me $2700 to replace my transmission with a rebuilt ford transmission.the real kicker is i bought this vehicle because my 2001 ford windstar's transmission went out and there was a service bulletin out on it too.i guess shame on me for continuing to buy ford.

Ford has bought back car - hopefully, tomorrow will be the transition day.for the transmission, car had been in 3x - transmission kicked at various speeds.starting in 12/01, 4x (including once in the dealership), the car would not start.feel that this is a major problem w/ car.receivng new car, but i thought this info. Should be part of nhtsa file.

I have a 2002 mercury mountaineer, i have had more problems on this car than are countable. The transmission has slowly been slipping since i bought the vehicle. I have had to replace the transfer case within the past two months, and now my check transmission light and od off light is on. Mechanics now say i need a new transmission. I have looked at numerous review on this make and model cars and all have transmission problems, and those who said they replaced the transmission, the problem recurred and it was a waste of money. I am just trying to figure out what to do these prices is getting very costly for a car that seems like cannot be repaired.

The transmission slips.i was stoped at a red light, when the light turned green i put my foot on the gas but the vehicle did not move.i could hear the engine rev, but it was a few seconds before the vehicle moved. This has happened 4 times in 2 months.the prior owner traded the vehicle in due to this problem, she informed the dealership of the problem and requested that they fix it before selling the vehicle.

I have a 2002 mercury mountaineer that the transmission needs to be relaced. There was nothing wrong with the transmission operationaly. The dashboard light o/d check transmission. The dealer which we purchased said the trans needed to be replaceed at $3200. I sent a letter to ford motor company asking for assistance. They contacted me and sated the could not help.

While reversing in low speed, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated into a pole.the dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.the consumer experienced sudden acceleration.the consumer believed that the pedal stuck.the transmission pan was removed and then re-sealed.the main control valve body was removed and repaired. *sc

A sudden thunk in the transmission and o/d light came on. By the next stop, it would not shift properly.

The transmission on my car went.

Transmission started shifting roughly.o/d off light started flashing.then car wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear.

Traveling i-95 n between baltimore,md and wilmington de when transmission started slipping in 2002 merc mtnr.transmission slipping when shifting into 3rd gear at toll both.pulled off hwy at rest stop but did not turn off engine.pulled back onto hwy, accelerated and check transmission indicator came on.o/d light began flashing.pulled off hwy, called for tow and was taken to local ford dealership.was told band was broken in transmission and replacement was needed at cost of $4361.had just replaced left rear wheel bearing and rear parking brakes week prior for $650.vehicle had 75k miles.couldn't justify spending that much money on 6 year old vehicle that had left me stranded five hours from home.traded vehicle (got annihilated on trade!) and continued my trip.

I own a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The tailgate developed a crack between the emblem and the rear glass lift. It was fixed once already and has since cracked again.since this crack has developed, the door ajar light has come on.i have noticed the same crack in almost every ford explorer and mountaineer that i see. I contacted the dealer to have it repaired again and was told that they only cover the repair once.i don't feel i should have to pay out of pocket for an obvious manufacturing defect. I then contacted ford and was told there is nothing they can do for me.keep in mind, i have also had numerous visits for my transmission having issues from the beginning and i have also had issues with the cruise control where it suddenly "takes off" and goes really fast.ford needs to stand by it's vehicles and fix them when there are obvious manufacturer defects!

Transmission slippage, numerous codes. Common with the 2002 mercury mountaineer. Cost of replacement or rebuilt more that $2,000.00.

2002 mercury mountaineer 4.6l v8 awd 100,000miles!various transmission problemso/d light flashing one day causing transmission not to shift correctly. Ten minutes later start the vehicle and light not on and transmission shifts fine. Happens on several occasions. Transmission began to slip. Take to mechanic fluid level and filter are fine. Hook up to computer and says various internal problems. Torque converter also began whining and making noise which probably means its coming apart inside. Estimated fix between 1800.00-2800.00! several with similar vehicles have reported same problems!also has wheel bearing issues!

Transmission shifting erratically on up-shift, 2-3 / 3-4 and 4-5. 5/16/05 mileage 55k. The vehicle was brought to the dealer, issue explained and fixed on first try. Solenoid, 1l2z-7g391-ae replaced. This is in case anyone else has similar problems. Extended warranty was purchased and used.

2002 mercury mountaineer:we have experienced the vehicle rapidly downshifting from 4th gear to 2nd gear without warning.this has happened when driving in longer distance in city traffic.we are afraid of being rear ended.the vehicle also does not run properly when cold.when outside temperatures are in the 20?s (20 degrees on the fahrenheit scale) it will only go between 10-15 mph until warm.wheels feel like they are spinning.the vehicle also makes a howling noise (sounds computer generated) at between 55-70 mph.the transmission was replaced at 11,000 miles.it did not solve the problems.ford has offered a cash settlement of $6200.00.we do have the extended warranty.can these problems be fixed?the first issue is the one of greatest concern.*la

Transmission would not shift into third gear. 70000 miles no towing just street driving.had to have the transmission rebuilt. Seems to be common issue for ford on 2002 mercury mountaineers and ford explorers.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while parking, the gear shaft suddenly broke. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The vehicle was parked and the contact stated that the gear shifter broke off without warning. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. The steering column was in the process of being replaced. The failure and current mileages were 108,000.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. While drivingat approximately 35 mph, the vehicle was hesitant to accelerate. The overdrive off warning light then illuminated. The dealer informed the contact that the transmission would need to be replaced. The dealer replaced the transmission. Following repairs, the contact stated the vehicle would intermittently shift from drive into neutral involuntarily. The contact would shut off the engine and when restarting, the vehicle would resume normal operation. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was advised that the shift lever column was bent and the shift linkage cable possibly was abnormally stretched. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 61,000.

I had problems getting the key to turn on the steering wheel after i inserted the key into the keyhole. I hear a vibrating noise coming from the steering wheel. After a while i could not hardly get the shifter to go into reverse, neutral, or drive.i experienced the noise for a while. I was parked on a slight hill and the shifter was hard to go into any gear. I finally got the gear shifter to go to drive. The next time the steering and shifter locked up was while i was with my family at the local store.it locked up and would not go to any gear. I turned the key off and tried it again, then the shifter fell off in my hand. I had to get it towed to charlie henderson ford (the local dealer).i feel this is a problem in a lot of these models. I have another relative who had this problem too.please check into these 2002 mercury mountaineer vehicles.

Rear lift gate panel below glass has developed a crack. This lift gate has been recalled but dealer states the cracked panel is not part of the recall. Two dealers have said this problem has occurredin other vehicles. Has not yet been repaired. Also transmissiontrouble. Dealer said needed to replace at cost of $3200.00. Dealer charged $80.00 to tell me it needed fixed.took to trans. Repair shop to repair at cost of $1300.00. This month i have also had to replace the idler pulley, egr valve, and the elec rear window is not functioning.

2002 mountainerhad rear axles replaced twice, front once , still leaks differntial fluid . All seals replaced twice, dealer saidit wasn'tongoing problem ,but most2002 mountaineer owners seemedto have simliar problems.this was 1st year awd models were produced, now 3 months after last repair steeering buckles in low range tires seem to fight turning.car isn't safe.

Our 2003 mercury mountaineer rear differential needed rebuilding in may 2003 at 35,500 miles. Now it needs to be rebuilt again at 55,000 miles. All bearings and cones were replaced both times.

I recently bought a 02 mercury mountaineer with 58k miles.a few days after i bought it, i noticed a "groan" from the rear end of the vehicle.i have worked on many vehicles before and it was obvious it was the differential.i planned to have the bearings in the rear end replaced, but after doing some investigation on the internet, i have realized that there are a lot of people that have had this problem and spent a lot of money to get it fixed with no good results.even with a used car purchase, i think ford should be embarassed at the fact that i am embarassed for making the purchase of the vehicle.i wish ford would do the right thing and re-gain our trust in them and fix our vehicles the right way.they have knows since day one that they were not right and have done nothing to fix them.i won't buy another ford until they do something about this.i know they don't care, but right now i own three fords and they will be the last if this is not rectified.thanks for listening!!!

At 34,365 miles we had to replace the rear end.it was covered by warranty.now at 58,472 miles we are having to replace it again.this time it will cost approximately $1400.

The rear differential bearings have gone bad.the complete differential was replaced in july, 2003, september 04, and in an attempt to do something different to fix the problem the drive shaft was replaced in october 2005.now it is february 2006 and the bad bearing noise is back.we are taking it into the dealer yet again for the same problem.we are also going to notify ford and the california consumer protection agency and bbb.

Dt*: the contact stated when the vehicle was taken to the dealership to rotate the tires, the mechanic noticed oil leaking from the rear differential seals.no warning light alerted the contact of the leak.the manufacturer was contacted, and informed there was no recall for this problem.

My 2002 mercury mountaineer v8 awd had experienced the same ongoing problem.brought into ford certified dealership with complaints of clicking and grinding in the front end.warranty company paid over $1500 to have repaired.repairs involved the drive shaft.i just recently pain over $400 to have similar work done after vehicle was experiencing same clicking and grinding.something to do with ball bearings and front hub assembly.car was still making same noises until front end apparently disengaged temporarily.didn't realized car was in rear wheel drive only until back tires were spinning in the snow. As of 3 days ago the car is undriveable due to sever grinding, binding, and clicking.still owe over $10,000 on the vehicle and doesn't seem fair to have to keep repairing the same on going problem.this part of the vehicle has never functioned properly.even after ford repaired, still had some degree of binding and clicking which got progressively worse over time.any help would be greatly appreciated.1st repair was don't on 5-11-07.

While driving, the transmission light came on.i did nothing unusual, the problem just occurred while driving.it was very hard to take this is the first time it occurred. I own a 2002 mercury mountaineer, 66,000 miles and i have a transmission problem.i have no warranty, and to fix it costs $1,500.i was trying to find the cost of a new transmission and realized from blogs about 02 mountaineers and most ford vehicles seem to have a transmission problem at about 55,000 miles.i would appreciate if you could investigate this occurrence because im not the only consumer with this problem.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that the seat belt became too tight to breathe and would not loosen. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was not provided. The failure mileage was unknown.

2002 mercury mountaineer v8 awd 4.6 transmission failure.vehicle had under 60,000 miles, but had surpassed extended warranty time frame.reverse vehicle would not move.shifted very hard through gears.sometimes tacking at 3000 rpm.

Back lift shattered when closing, resulting in shattered glass in my hand, inside the car, on top of the car and all over the parking lot near other cars (everywhere) and brackets hanging from the wires on the top (it was raining outside!).i drove car to dealer who after initial questions and ford approval then advised of recall and provided a replacement car during repairs but it took 6 weeks to repair.amazing while the 6 week repairs of "waiting for parts" i got a recall notice in the mail (aug 05).after bothering the dealer to get the car back, i was called to pick up the car and i was told the "check engine soon light" is coming on!when i picked it up, i not only see the light is intermittent coming on, but my electric window switches are not working to put the windows up and down (except the front passenger works fine) and the driver seat belt is not retracting correctly!this car is only 3 years old!!

The airbag light will flash, then continuously stay on.had taken to a certified ford dealership to have it checked out and/or repaired on 3-15-06.the service advisor stated that even though we have an additional vehicle service contract, it will not cover any safety devices after 50,000 miles.the service advisor then gave us an estimate on the parts and labor which are approx. $232.00.the service advisor stated that the right hand buckle pretensioner needs replaced.if it does not get repaired and the light continues to stay on, then if we (meaning, my husband, son, daughter and myself) are in an accident requiring our airbags to deploy, there is a high possibility that they will not deploy, which could be fatal (god forbid), for my family and/or any other family that may have had the same experience with their vehicle.i personally feel this matter needs to be investigated and there should be a recall made on every vehicle.i had called the customer service number to speak to a representative through our vehicle service contract, in hopes to get some satisfaction that they would pay this, but to no prevail i was told that since the vehicle was over 50,000 miles it covers no, and i repeat no safety equipment, so therefore they pay 0 dollars towards any safety malfunctions/failures with your vehicle.i have also contacted ford customer service and have made a complaint concerning this matter.i just hope that some justice can be made to resolve this matter with our vehicle and possibly others as well.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.the vehicle is equipped with heated seats.while driving 40 mph, the seat became so hot that the driver smelled something burning; however, there was no smoke present.he deactivated the seat heater and took the vehicle to the dealer.the dealer stated that the foam underneath the seat was probably the cause of the odor and there was a short in the wire.the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 65,000.updated 03/18/08.*ljthe consumer stated there was not a blown fuse.updated 03/18/08

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while driving approximately 50 mph with the front driver seat heating system activated, and then there was an unexpected excessive high voltage of heat penetration through the bottom of the seat.the driver smelled a strong burning odor of rubber in the foam seat cushion.the driver pulled over to the side of the road.after waiting twenty-five minutes for the seating area to cool down, he was able to resume normal vehicle operation.there was no personal injuries sustained. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection.the failure was contributed to a short circuit in the heated seat system.the technician recommended not to activate the heated seat system.the vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction.the failure mileage was 50,00.the current mileage was 89,000.

I purchased a vehicle on march 11, 2017 from a dealership named redefined auto sales in skokie, il. Since i have purchased this vehicle, i have spent over $1,500 in costs for repairs to this vehicle, beginning with i had to get an oil change on the same day that i purchased the vehicle because the change oil required light came on as soon as i exited the expressway in route from the dealership. Also, as i was en route from the dealership, on the expressway a motorist tried to cut me off and that is when i found out that the horn was not working. Things have just went downhill from there.

Changed front pads ( never opened bleeder)then had soft pedal, after that changed frond brake lines master cylinder, booster, abs control unit and calipers still soft pedal. Then used snapon scan tool to perform brake bleeding in abs control unit, still problem persisted, as of now still no luck (bleeding all 4wheels in factory specs have been perform/bench bleeding) still soft pedal.

Abs light continually comes on.on several ocassions, when applying the brakes, they go all the way to the floor with a shuddering noise.the vehicle has been in the dealership 5 / 6 times to repair this problem.the sensor has been changed and after a month or so, it comes back on again.on my last visit to the dealership, i was told mecury was aware of the problem and they were working on a solution. They said i would be contacted in a couple of weeks.that was months ago and my light is back on again.what will it take, an accident? now i am waiting for the manager to return to town to give me a call.

2002 mercury mountaineer, transmission is bucking, over drive light flashing, check transmission light on. Also rotated tires, changed brakes, and had rotors cut yet there still is a pulsating felling in front end when stopping.

I have a continued problem of the abs light coming on.i have had it in the shop 5-6 times.they changed the sensor and a while later it comes back on.on several occasions, my brakes have gone all the way to the floor.the dealership maintains that mercury is aware of the problem and may be working on a recall.my light is now on again and have placed a call to the dealership.i have to wait for the manager to return to town to see what he would like to do.oh, and i do have the extended warranty that i have paid over $2,000.what is that for?what will it take, my brakes to go out?

Consumerwas traveling on a roadless than20mph andapplied brakes, andvehicle kept on going.vehicle stopped when she was atbottom ofhill.there were no warning signals. This incident happened twice.dealershipwas aware of problem.

At 43577 miles i am having to replace my rear-end.this is going to cost approximately. 1500.00. Also abs sensor has to be replaced.*la

Abs sensor light stayed on. Consumer stated that vehicle produced a loud grinding noise, and there wasextended stopping distance. Dealer claimed abs systemfailed.

I purchased my 2002 mountaineer on june 20, 2004.when i am driving and hit the speed of 75 mph i hear a loud whistling sound and the only way to get rid of the noise is to reduce my speed to under 75 mph.i have spoken with another person who owns the same suv and he has the same problem only on a larger scale. He has had the weather stripping replaced twice and still the noise remains. I will be taking it in soon to have it checked over since i am also having another problem when i stop and apply the brakes (loud squeaking noise).

When braking brakes failed, causing the vehicle to go into an embankment. Vehicle was towed.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Consumer stated the abs had failed.consumer stated the brakes went out on her twice and she drove it to the dealer .she stated the first time she took it to the dealer, she was told there was some kind of a leak.the second time they did not say anything. The vehicle was still making a thumping noise. *ph the anti lock brake system had a right inner seal leak and a rear sensor malfunction.the abs light had come on at different times. *scc

The anti-lock brake system failed. It was serviced but the service technician stated it needed a new part to make the brakes effective. Provide further details............................................

Abs light has came on 4 times in 2 years i had the abs sensor replaced every time the truck has only 35450 miles on it. I paid over $31000 for this truck and i have had more trouble with it than any truck i have ever had in the past.

Dt: while putting new brakes pads on the rear of my vehicle mechanic found that the coils around shocks were rusty, corroded, and crumbly.the coils fell apart in large chunk's in the mechanic's hands.

Recently, the pcv valve in my 2002 mercury mountaineer had a leak (vacuum system leak).as the vehicle began to stall as a result of this leak, while traveling 55 mph, and decelerating towards a traffic light, i lost all function of my brakes.when i stepped hard on the brakes, there was no response.however, because i equated this to possibly being tied to the pcv valve, i stepped on the accelerator to increase airflow into the engine so that i would have brake function.this gave me brake function, temporarily.however, this move was very risky, as i was approaching cars in front of me and accelerating towards them instead of decelerating, just so i could slam on the brakes and have functioning brakes.there is an apparent link between the brakes and the vacuum system...which poses a deadly situation.had i not been aware of vacuum system issues and how to mitigate them, i would have plowed into the stopped vehicle in front of me with no brakes.this occurred in the evening.i had to use this method to complete the remainder of my trip to get home, accelerating every time i needed to use brakes, because the stalling vehicle every time had no brake function.this condition put me in a very bad situation, as i also had my 5 year old in the car with me.this system should be recalled as it is unsafe.replacing the pcv valve corrected the problem.there is also no notice in the operating manual for this vehicle about this vacuum system problem, especially since the operating manual that came with this car is for a prototype software system, and doesn't even match my vehicle.i have complained to mercury/ford about this incorrect manual, but they did not offer to send me a new one, and simply took the information and didn't even respond to my concerns.

I went to go pick up my son from school, when i went to put it on drive the shifting handle broke off. I didnt even do it hard. I had to get my car towed to my house and had to pay to get it fixed. I looked it up and theres alot more people that have complaints about this and that it should go to recall its just not safe, what if were driving and changing gears on the road and someone gets hurt even death.

My husband has a 2002 mercury mountaineer & we were dropping his niece off at home, pulled into the driveway, put the car in park & she got out. When he tried to put the car into reverse, we heard a snap, & the gear shifter was hanging down. He pulled the rubber covering off & found that a metal piece right inside the gears shift assembly completely broke off. We had no way of putting the car in gear so we had to call a tow truck to tow us home & the car has been sitting for the past 3 days. We have had to rent a car while we are trying to get it repaired & just found out today that ford wants us to buy a whole new steering column assembly for $1,300!so on top of the rental car fee we are paying, we need to find another $1,300 to fix his car. I have been looking online to see if anyone else has had the same problem, & the forums i've come across have all had the exact same problem, & the pictures are exactly what happened to our car also! i think this is a defect for the ford/mercury vehicles that need to be inspected. Seems the metal used in that particular part is either too weak or maybe has been compromised in some way. I don't know!

Consumer called complaining about been in colision and losing total control of the vehicle before impact. Dealer was not contacted at this time. Ts

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that the steering column gear shifter became fractured while attempting to switch the transmission from park to reverse. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic were it was diagnosed and repaired. The contacted indicated that the entire steering column was replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle recently experienced the same defect but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 120,000.

Gear shift lever broke out of steering column. Totally broken metal piece.

Gear stuck in park. Upon release gear shift broke from steering column. $2000 in repair/damage. Unable to find used part as it is sells quickly due to this being a common problem.

2002 mercury mountaineer - gear shift mechanism failed when trying to shift out of park.vehicle repaired by billy-howel ford lincoln mercury, cumming, georgia.

Consumer called complaining about having a problem with a strong vibration on the whole vehicle and also on the steering wheel.dealer was contacted and they first stated that there were the tires then also the shocks on the back were cahnged and the vehicle still has the same problem. Ph

Shifting gears from reverse to drive when gear shifter broke off in my hand leaving car stuck in reverse with no way of changing gears.had to have complete steering column replaced because column is not designed to let you replace the broken part only. Had to search for the part in junk yards and all the columns that could be found in junkyards had the same trouble broken off shifter. Had to order a new steering column and i do have the old column and receipts.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury moutaineer. The contact stated that the gear shift handle broke off when she attempted to shift into drive. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer who stated that there were no related recalls. The vehicle had not been repaired. The vin was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were approximately 166,000.

The front end gear box has gone bad and now needs to be replaced. It makes a loud noise and sounds like the tires are ready to pop off.i just replaced the rear end last november 2006 ,and now having this problem with the vehicle again.

2002 mountaineer stalls, transmission control assembly, main control valve, and gasket had to be replaced.the lift gate was sticking, and while closing it, the glass shattered, the glass was recalled, and was suppose to have been fixed. The oil light illuminated. My son was making a turn in boulder when the car slid into the curbing.this was on a icy road and the car was traveling at less than 5 mph.after stricking the curbing, the car would not track so he took it to the dealer for evaluation.it was identified that the rear tie rod end had broken off and that a new assembly must be installed.my son called me and i requested the part be sent to my attention.i am an automotive engineer and i know that this is not an normal failure mode for this part.i also need to point out that there were no marks on the tire and that the wheel was not damaged in the event.upon receipt of the failed part it became very apparent that a manufacturing problem exists.the tie rod is threaded on the rod and then swedged to hold it in place.in order to swedge the part the wall thickness has been reduced to less that 1/8" and in the swedging process, the material is streched over the shoulder between the solid mass of the tie rod and the drilled out (reduced wall thickness)section of the tie rod that is then threaded and swedged in-place.the part also has rust present on the inside of the break which is an indication that a crack was present that was most likely created by the high mechanical stresses in the swedging process.i am concerned that this problem is present on all the new 2002 ford explorers/mountaineers.this is a new suspension system for 2002.a large bump in the road at any speed above 30 mph could be catastrophic! i have not made contact with ford and still have the part in my possession.please advise what the next steps should be.

He has had the weather stripping replaced twice and still the noise remains. I will be taking it in soon to have it checked over since i am also having another problem when i stop and apply the brakes (loud squeaking noise).

Dt: the driver's side of the dashboard was peeling. The vehice had less than 50,000 miles. The consumer contacted the the dealer and they told the consumer he would have to pay for the repairs.

Under back glass of mercury mountaineer there is a strip all the way across the back that is cracked in 2 i have notice every mountaineer i have seen old and new all are doing the same its like all the ones on the road to day are like thatand it could break all the way off and hit a car and it has sharp edges and dealers want to munch to fix it well i thank if all mountaineers are like this it should be recalled u can drive down the road and look at them all they are like thatso thank you for your time.

From the time the consumer purchased the vehicle there have been problems with it.the transmission in the vehicle made a loud clunking sound.the dealer replaced the transmission once but the consumer continued to experience problems.the head liner on the ceiling fell down.

On cold mornings, the front windshield fogs/frosts up.turning heat on and selecting defrost provides little to no air to windshield.dealership identified it as a broken vent select door, requiring dashboard to be removed and part replaced, $1100 fix.in doing research on the vent select door - cars are designed that if the selector breaks that the air should default to the front defrost so that windshield would not fog/frost and cause a life threatening situation.multiple times this has occurred while driving, all along believing that the fogging up was due to snow build up on outside vents. The fact that the vent broke and did not push air to the windshield is why i'm logging this complaint as it could have resulted in a life threatening situation.in reading the other entries, noting that i've had to have the rear coil springs replaced and had back liftgate replaced after cracking.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that the rear lift gate failed to latch securely on several occasions. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The contact stated on one occasion while driving the vehicle, the lift gate ajar warning light illuminated. The contact's son went to close the lift gate and glass shattered. The contact hired a glass repairmen to fix the window for $250.00. The dealer nor the manufacturer had been notified of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact associated nhtsa campaign number: 01i010000 (visibility) with the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Just under the rear window the back panel cracked in the cold weather the vehicle is kept in a garage when exiting the garage into the weather it just cracked just under the mountaineer emblem all the way down the length of the panel and now the back rear window rattles.

The back door of my 2002 mercury mountaineer has cracked around the mercury emblem, which is located just under the glass portion of the door that you can open separately from the remainder of the door.i have now seen three other mercury mountaineers with the same crack around the emblem.i don't believe this is a coincidence. I believe it is a defect and that the manufacturer should put out a recall to fix the defect.

My complaint is on the rear back panel. When i bought this car my back panel cracked at 76,000 miles. Out of pocket cost to me to replace this panel $500. Now 2 months ago i noticed a crack in that panel and days later the entire panel flew off my car as i am driving down the road!i can only imagine the shock of the driver in the vehicle behind me. Ford/mercury should man up and recall these. Find a permanent solution for an obvious design flaw on their part. Everywhere i go i see mountaineers and explorers with cracked, half gone or completely gone rear back panels. Ridiculous.

Upper rear lift gate below the rear glass window was found with several cracks on a cold winter morning.no recent impacts other than normal rear hatch closings.have noticed many other similar make/models of ford/mercury with the same damage in exact same location.

The car would have a warning display that a door was ajar and we would check all the doors and re-close them all and the warning would still appear. Then we would check the lift gate window on the back and re-close it and the display would go away, but the lift gate was closed the whole time before. It constantly does this and now the lift gate has a crack in it.

Hello and good day, when i 1st purchased my mountaineer (purchased used with approx 119,000 miles) i took it to get it washed. When i was getting it washed the rear hatch panel (the rectangular panel under the glass with the make and model name) cracked and broke apart. I tried to contact ford and mercury concerning this to explain what happened and how part of the car literally fell off. They informed me that they would not recall this but that i could take it to my local dealer and they could fix it for $750! i did research to find, literally, thousands of complaints about the same exact problem. People's rear hatch panels are falling off while driving all the time, i see it on the road alot.since the panel fell off, the retaining metal piece that holds the reatch hatch clasp in place to the door, it rusting off. This is because the panel is broken off and water/ice has rusted the area, where usually water and ice could not reach it. This small problem is not causing multiple problems.i am concerned that more of my rear panel will fly off while driving and cause an accidenti am concerned that my rear hatch panel will come open while driving (the clasp could rust off anytime) and cause an accident or it will fly open and stuff will fly out of my car and then cause an accidenti am concerned that my panel will open while parked and my car /possessions will be stoleni am concerned that the door clasp will cause my car alarm (factory) to go off and run my batter down and/or short out my electrical system.below is a link to one forum with over #450 people complaining about the same problemhttp://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/1223-ford-cracked-tailgate-class-action-lawsuitthank you for your time.

My mother was at her parents' house and opened the rear glass portion of the lift gate.upon doing so, one of the lift gate cylinders detached from the glass.she went inside to get her father to come outside and see if he could fix the issue.when he attempted to lift the glass, it shattered instantly leaving cuts all over his body.i called ford about this issue and was told that there was nothing that they could do about this because the recall that addresses this issue had already been performed on the vehicle (nhtsa campaign id number: 01i010000).

The rear hatch hinge broke as i attempted to close the hatch. The hatch then slammed down on my head. Fortunately, i was not injured - a little dazed. My local dealer replaced the hinge for $230. I contacted ford hq service but they refused any concession. I had a similar incident in january 2005, and ford replaced the hinge at no cost under recall 04s20. Obviously, the original replacement was not a permanent fix.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated the rear lift gate on the vehicle was cracked from the top to the bottom of the lift gate. The crack extended from the emblem and began to get bigger depending on the weather. The lift gate was repaired four years ago and should be repaired again. The contact stated the crack was a manufacturer's defect. The current mileage was 95,000.

I own a 2002 mercury mountaineer.the tailgate developed a crack between the emblem and the rear glass lift.since this crack has developed, the door ajar light has stayed on consistently, causing the interior light to stay on, draining the battery, which had to be replaced. I have noticed the same crack in almost every ford explorer that i see.i have not yet attempted a repair because i don't feel i should have to pay out of pocket for an obvious manufacturing defect.

When approaching my vehicle (2002 mercury mountaineer) from behind, i noticed a crack in the center of the liftgate panel, beginning at the bottom of the window and extending to the handle.i researched this on the internet and found that it is a problem which has occurred in ford-manufactured suvs, including the mountaineer and explorer.i called the service manager of the dealership where i purchased the vehicle.he was familiar with the problem and stated that the panel will need to be replaced.since there is no recall issued, there was nothing he could do.i then called ford customer service and spoke to a person who told me that ford could not provide assistance since my vehicle was out of warranty.since this is an obvious defect in the product, i believe that ford should issue a recall and cover the repair cost.ford should stand behind the quality of its vehicles and if there is a problem, then it should provide the customer with a satisfactory remedy.

While getting into vehicle, wind hit driver's side door and door hit against consumer's leg.door is curved which had a point on end of door. Dealer contacted.

The liftgate was made out of plastic and had stress fracturers from top to bottom, which was caused by constantly opening and closing. The liftgate was not durable enough to be closed with force or window would shatter.vehicle was taken to dealership, but the problem had not been resolved.

I own a 2002 mercury mtnr. 85,000 mi. Normal, expected usage..4 wks ago noticed a crack in the rear lift up door panel above/below the ctr. Of the mtnr. Logo. Crack thr/thr plastic panel.. Door is used frequently as access to the rear storage area..2 days later took it to the ford/merc. Dealer, serv. Mngr. States that he has recently seen another "same" crack.. Contacted ford who stated that they would not take any responsibility as the vehicle had >100,000mi..same result when he contacted them for my vehicle, sent in for reconsideration with pictures of the vehicle/crack... Appears to be an engineering/manufacturing problem, not specifically related to >mileage as much as related to frequent usage of this door, and a plastic panel susceptible to breakage secondary to design/placement of logo, creating a "weak" area that is exposed to frequent "banging down" as the door is closed..ford's answer the second time was a denial of resonsibility and a suggestion that the owners contact their insurance company (not the correct or customer friendly response, as this would only result in customer paying out a deductible and/or being subjected to increased insurance rates)...i realize that this is not a failure that resulted in accident, injury or death, but it is one more example of how the american automobile manufacturers are not listening to the customers and certainly not standing behind their products, as defects, faults are identified secondary to less than excellent design, engineering, and manufacturing..when will the american auto industry realize that the average consumer is not impressed with the high powered, dramatic advertisements seen todau, and would like them to be interested in producing a safe, sturdy, well engineered vehicle...i am very concerned that ford has taken no interest or resonsibility for such an obvious product defect....i have had the panel ordered and it will pay to have it replaced...have there been other such incidents noted?....thank you .

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.the contact noticed a crack on the panel of the liftgate.the dealer replaced the panel, but was unable to diagnosis the cause of failure.approximately one year later, she noticed another crack on the liftgate panel.the dealer stated that they would order the part and replace the panel.as of july 2, 2007, the panel has not been replaced.the failure caused the close door light to remain illuminated.the current mileage is 68,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

Rear liftgate glass shattered on 2002 mercury mountaineer. Hinge came off and the entire glass window exploded filling entire vehicle with flying glass.

Dt*: the contact stated the liftgate fell off. This occurred while the liftgate was opened and it fell onto the contact's head. Therewere no warning indicators before liftgate fell.

Subject regarding rear liftgate applique (trim panel) cracks. Dob=02/02 and will ck. Design version.061604_pco

Rear liftgate applique (trim panel) cracked for no reason.

After the dealership performed the liftgate/glass bracket recall 01i010000 the hatch door shifted when opened and the entire cargo door alignment is off. The vehicle been back to the dealership 3 times since the recall was performed. The problem hasn't been correct thus far.

2002 mercury mountaineer hinges on the tailgate had separated resulting in the window shattering.*mrthe warning light came on, consumer released and closed the hatch back and the warning light remained on. Returned to the rear of vehicle and raised tailgate window which shot out of consumer hand and shattered into many pieces. Inspection revealed one of the hinges on the tailgate window had separated from the car which caused the window to shatter.

Back lift shattered when closing, resulting in shattered glass everywhere and brackets hanging (it was raining outside!).i drove car to dealer who provided a replacement car during repairs but it took 6 weeks to repair.then when i was called to pick up the car i was told the "check engine soon light" is coming on!when i picked it up, i not only see the light is intermittent coming on, but my electric window switches are not working to put the windows up and down (except the front passenger works fine) and the driver seat belt is not retracting correctly!this car is only 3 years old!!

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while the vehicle was parked, the window liftgate shattered when it was closed.the dealer stated that the vehicle had previously been repaired under nhtsa campaign id numbers 04v442000 (structure:body: hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments), 01i010000 (visibility: glass, side/rear), and 07e104000 (visibility:glass, side/rear); therefore, the contact would be responsible for the repair cost. I was making sure all the doors of my 2002' mountaineer were closed and when i shut the back lift gate one of the connecting brackets came out of place and caused the whole thing to shatter a spray glass in my face. I had glass stuck in my scalp and had to wash out my eyes for 4 hours as well as my hands and face being cut. I read on your website that this is a know defect by ford, i contacted ford on this and they basically told me since my car was out of warrenty they dont care and the part cost over $1200 to be replaced - because the way it was designed you cannot get just the glass i need body parts too.pe04045.pco

The contact has a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact feels that the vehicle is experiencing the same failure as recall campaign (04v442000) issued for the 2002 ford explorer. The vehicle has a crack going from the glass all the way down past the mountaineer emblem on the back hatch of the vehicle. The contact has heard of rear windows exploding on the ford vehicle because of this problem and thinks this is a safety hazard for this vehicle. Thefailure mileage was 52489 and thecurrent mileage was 53000.

Upon awaiting parts to have the rear liftgate glass recall 04v442000repairs performed the glass dropped down into the structure about 1 1/2 inches which caused stress on the trim below the gate window, resulting in the trim breaking.manufacturer was aware of this problem due to numerous complaints being filed, but they were not willing to repair the trim.

The bottom frame that supports the window of the hatch is crackedright down the middle. Owner contacted the dealer and was given an estimate for the repair.

2002 mercury mountaineer rear hatch strut failure - three (3) occasions within four weeks. Dealer has no solution to problem. The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while the contact was underneath the hood detailing her vehicle, the hood came down on her without warning.she was not injured.the contact called the manufacturer to report the failure and was informed that there was no recall.she was advised to report the failure to nhtsa.the failure mileage was 58,500.

Hood support struts can fail in cold weather without notice or warning.could cause severe head/hand/arm injury.

Was pulling out into traffice at 45mph whenhood flew up about 6 inches. Did not hit windshield due to secondary latch catching it. Same problem has happened before in july. Vehicle has only 500 miles.

A large crack spontaneously formed running vertically down the panel of the rear liftgate of our 2002 mercury mountaineer near the emblem. I have not been able to ascertain if the crack has led to a failure of the tailgate integrity as far as waterproofing is concerned. .

The rear panel of ,my 2002 mercury mountaineer was replaced when the rear window blew out. This indicint occurred when the vehicle was parked in my driveway, and we found later that there was a massive recall due to this defect.now, the rear panel is literally peeling away from the truck, we took it to the dealer where we usually go for repairs and was told that the vehicle is no longer under warranty and that we would have to just live with it. I find this completely unacceptable. The vehicle is barely three years old and i have had several problems with it; although most of them have been adressed, i am completely shocked that i have to drive around wondering whether the rear panel is going to fly off and possibly cause damage to another vehichle or even worse cause injury to an individual. I am contacting ford motor company today to formally let them know of my complaint, becuase i'd like to know how long is the warranty period on a manufacturers defect that was repaired.thanks, denise

Tailgate has developed crack in the plastic of the gate. The plastic is bonded to the rear window glass. Apparently dissimilar expansion coefficients result incracking of the gate. Local repair shop has replaced 3 in the last month, not including mine.

Dt*: the contact stated the tailgate was cracked below the window.when the vehicle was purchased, the tailgate was already cracked.the service dealer repaired the crack.a year later, the tailgate began cracking again and has progressively become worse; its cracked all the way down through the plastic panel below the window.the contact stated that the window comes down so hard that it may be the reason for the cracking tailgate.

Rear tailgate latch brakes across this is a know issue with all ford explorers and mercury mountaineers. It's obviously a bad design from ford motor co.ford needs to recall this and it's their design and it also can represent an injury to someone if a piece was to fall off and hit another car.

2002 mercury mountaineer rear tailgate window shattered .*mrwhile driving the consumer noticed that he door ajar light had illuminated on the dash.he pulled over, and exited the vehicle to check all the doors.after opening and closing all the door the door ajar light was still on.he then went to the rear of the vehicle to check the tailgate.when he raised the tailgate window it sprung from his hands and shattered into many pieces.upon further inspection the consumer noticed that one of the hinges on the tailgate window had separated from the vehicle which caused the window to release then shatter.

While driving in cold weather driver's side window fell off track, causing the glass to fall inside the panel of the door frame.onsumer was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer, andmechanic replaced the window.also, consumer went to lift up the tailgate and the cable snapped in half.consumer was able to put the cable in the back of the trunk. However, mechanic informedconsumer that vehicle was not onrecall or under warranty.

The bottom frame that supports the window of the hatch is crackedright down the middle. Owner contacted the dealer and was given an estimate for the repair.

While driving steeringsteering wheel shakes.

Noticed slight roaring noise in rear suspension. Figured it was a wheel bearing that was worn, which is what it was, but in looking at that issue saw that rear passenger coil spring was broken. Vehicle stance did not indicate a broken spring. Checked the driver side to be safe and noted that rear spring was broken in two places and looked as if it was to come off the bottom spring/strut cushion.as a result of this mechanic indicated broken springs had created premature wear of rear toe links.i am currently looking for replacement parts.this vehicle has seen no off-road use or been used to carry heavy cargo loads.lady driven only.

Loud roaring noise coming from front left wheel.ford dealership service department replaced wheel bearing as part had failed.after replacing front wheel bearing the mechanic test drove the vehicle and determined the right rear wheel bearing had failed as well due to a roaring noise coming from rear end right wheel.both are being replaced for $500.00.who knows when the other two wheel bearings are going to fail and need replaced.vehicle only has 81,000 miles on it and it is uncommon to hear of a wheel bearing failing with so few miles.this is not an uncommon problem with 2002 through 2004 mercury mountaineers or ford explorers from other complaints read and the dealership in which i am having the work done at stated this has been a common problem they have had to deal with.i would think with so many problems that a recall would have or will occur.i would understand if it was a vehicle with over 100,000 miles if not more than 150,000 miles, but vehicles with as few as 10,000 miles this is problem that could lead to serious accidents and injuries.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's front driver side made a wobbling sound while driving 8 mph.the sound only occurred when the vehicle was in motion.on 08/08/06 the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who inspected the tires and determined that the wheel bearings were bad.the dealer was contacted on the same day and expressed that a diagnostic test needed to be performed to locate the cause of the noise.the manufacturer was not contacted.

Leaking rear-end fluid.rear-end noise (howl/roar)defect not covered by ford motor companyrecords show that ssm17560 was removed mysteriously.

I had noticed the stance of the vehicle had change and during a routine new york state inspection it was determined that the rear springs on my 2002 mercury mountaineer had broken. The rear spring defect also cause therear shocks to prematurely wear out and need replacement. The springs were cracked entirely in half. It appears as if there were a defect relating to the metallurgical properties of the metal used or possibly a defect in themanufacture of the springs. At no time was this vehicle driven off road or used to tow anything. The vehicle simply was used by my wife to drive back and forth to work(20 mile round trip on the highway) the car was out of warranty by about 2 years and had about 50,000 miles on it. A ford representative told me to take it to the dealer for them to inspect it, there conclusion was the same. Two rear broken springs, as well as 2 rear shocks that required replacement . Their cost ....over $1000.00. There is no way this item should break...god forbid it happens on the highway at a high speed, .... A spring break at highway speed would cause the vehicle to become extremely unstable and possibly cause a high speed crash. Springs actually support the weight of the vehicle and when there broken.....there is a sudden and unforeseen unsettling of the vehicle.....which in my opinion is a major safety issue. I brought this to the attention of ford via their 800 telephone # - (800-392-3673)...their response was..."we are under no legal responsibility to fix this problem. The car is out of warranty and it was my responsibility to fix the car....." i believe ford has a responsibility, not only me, but to all it's customers who own this vehicle or its cousin the ford explorer. I expected more from a large company such as ford. I'm sure they have a protocol to document this incident, buti wonder if they just swept this incident under the ford carpet. I feel i have a responsibility to let others know...this is why i made this complaint.

Normal driving lead to parts failure. Fortunately no accident occurred, however my mechanic stated that the wheel bearing failure was that severe that had i been traveling on a highway, the result could have been catastrophic.2002 mercury mountaineer (ford explorer) with wheel bearing/hub failure on all 4 wheels at different mileage intervals.i researched this problem and found hundreds of owners with the same failures.please research.

Failure of rear coil spring on 2002 mercury mountaineer.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.while driving 30 mph uphill, the contact heard a clunking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle.the dealer stated that the wheel bearing needed to be replaced.the vin and engine size were unknown.the current mileage was 70,000 and failure mileage was 65,000.

While driving my 2002 mercury mountaineer i hit a bump on a small bridge and my rear drivers side coilspring snapped in half. Oddly about ten days later i was following a mountaineer that hita dip in the road and the same coilspring broke. I do not know the year of that mountaineer though. To repair the coilspring is extremely expensive because it is dealer only 300.00 for the part and 135.00 to install it.

Rear coil spring failure - completely broken in two poses a major safety problem.

At 43577 miles i am having to replace my rear-end.this is going to cost approximately. 1500.00. Also abs sensor has to be replaced.*la

I had a flat tire at the left rear of the vehicle, when changing the tire i noticed the spring was broken in several pieces. I have to see of the dealer will replace it under warrantymy vehicle has 90,000 miles.

Both rear coil springs were broken.both had been weakened due to corrosion before they broke.this is a widely-known issue with this vehicle and i had been checking for this problem every couple months.i last checked in december of 2008 and neither spring was broken through and neither showed external corrosion at the time, but they must have been very deteriorated even then.my point is that a visual inspection with the wheels off did not reveal the problem before the springs broke.one of the broken springs has a split along the length of the spring wire several inches long and a complete failure roughly perpendicular to the wire.the other does not have the split; it is just broken in shear perpendicular to the wire.

While driving 55 mphheard a knocking noise comingfrom the rear.consumer took vehicle to dealer for analysis, and mechanic could not resolve the problem.

Both rear coil springs have broken in two places for no apparent reason which over time ruined my rear wheel bearingsmy wife drives this vehicle daily and has never towed a trailer or hauled heavy loads.

During brake inspection mechanic discovered both rear coil springs were broken at the same location on each coil spring.i have never used this vehicle for towing, off-road use, or heavy hauling.i firmly believe this is not normal wear and tear.

Dt: while putting new brakes pads on the rear of my vehicle mechanic found that the coils around shocks were rusty, corroded, and crumbly.the coils fell apart in large chunk's in the mechanic's hands.

While driving on a highway at about 65mph a loud bang was heard and my 2002 mercury mountaineer swerved to the right almost hitting another car. I thought i hit something on the road, but inspection revealed the right rear coil spring had snapped. Further inspection revealed the left side had also broken at some point. I researched the internet and found this to be a common problem. Here are two of the many links with owners expressing the same concerns. Http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1619655 , has two pages of this problem with explorers and mountaineers, http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/ford_springs.html , talks about broken springs on all ford models. I called my local dealer to inquire about this problem and was told this is the first they had heard of the problem, however they just happen to stock the parts to repair it. I could not afford their cost so i had no choice but to have it repaired by a relative.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that during routine inspection, a technician concluded that the two rear coil springs have fractured without any prior warnings. He then added that the failure was common for this model type. He is in the process of having the vehicle repaired at an expense of $600.00. The manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. The failure and current mileages were80,000.updated 10/26/09. *ljupdated 10/26/09

The passenger rear side coil spring was cracked and broken almost cut down a tire said the dealer.

Driving on a rainy afternoon to my sons house in ridgewood, nj. I ran over a small rock which punctured my rear tire. The tire had only 3000 miles on it and could not be fixed, it had a 2" tear in it.i feel this should not have happened to a new tire and is unsafe. Eagle ls m+s p245/70r16

Started vehicle to go to work like every daytried to shift into r shifter broke of in my hand. Needs to be recalled. I am glad it happened in drive way. I live on highway and it could have broke after i was in highway shifting into d.

My power will stay on for long periods of time also i'm having an accelerationproblem when i drive i have to wait for it to go to about 25 mi till 26 for it to pick up any speed it takes a very long time for it to pick up any speed in the 1st place.

The problem i have is that the oil filter drain sleeve has cut into the oil pressure sencer wire cluster so my car is reading low oil pressure but has suffenct pressure

I was driving on the highway & stopped at one of the service stations along the highway. When i returned to the vehicle i put my children in the car, turned it on, put the car in drive hit the gas & the vehicle did not move. I tried putting it in reverse & nothing happened. The car would rev up but would not move. It felt like i had the car on neutral. Tried several times & nothing happened. I then tried to put the car on d3 & that is when it moved slightly. Park & drive do not work!! very dangerous had this happened while i was still driving on the highway, which is what would have probably happened. I was only out of my car for 10 minutes.

Consumer states that they hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal as a result of them being located too close together almost resulting in accident. Mr

Vehicle has sudden speed while trying to brake.

The speed control deactivation switch was replaced in my 2002 mercury mountaineer by a local dealer after the original recall was issued [ford recall campaign number 09s09].approximately 6 months ago, the low brake fluid light began to illuminate.over time, the cause of the brake fluid loss became obvious as the brake fluid began to visibly leak from the new speed control deactivation switch.presently, the low brake fluid level light illuminates every three to four days with minimal driving.the brake fluid reservoir requires approximately one quarter of its capacity upon every occurrence.it appears that the replacement speed control deactivation switch may be faulty as well.hopefully, this is a rare occurrence, but in case it becomes more wide spread, i wanted to bring the issue to someone's attention.

While driving on a neighborhood road the entire accelerator assembly fell of onto the floor.i found no evidence of the nuts used to affix the assembly to the fire wall.had this occurred on interstate driving or in heavy city traffic an accident could happen.

When the vehicle in put into drive from park, the vehicle jumps forward even though the gas has not been applied.the problem was reported to the dealer who stated they reprogrammed the vehicle computer.

Service bulletin 14966 states do not replace any parts in an effort to repair the vehicle - vehicle has been idle at office since returned from dealer on july 24,2001 - ford motor continues to sell this vehicle with the same problem - ford regional service mamager contacted me on two occasions and was to get back by august 7, 2001 but has not done so. The vehicle has been parked as i feel that where a drive train is involved, it could be dangerous - i have asked that the vehicle be replace as it has been out of service for 21 days.

Other vehicles of the same make, model, and year have been included for a safety recall regarding the brackets connecting the lift cylinders to each side of the liftgate glass.the adhesive has worked loose and the cylinder will not hold open the glass; the gate has fallen and will continue to do so, resulting in glass breakage.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer.when the contact opened the liftgate, the glass shattered on her hand.the brackets caused the lift cylinders to detach from the glass and shatter.prior to the failure, the contact heard a rattling sound.the vehicle was previously repaired according to ford recall number 04s20 and nhtsa campaign id number 01i010000 (visibility:glass, side/rear).the failure mileage was unknown because the instrument panel constantly displays an error message stating that the rear liftgate is ajar due to the failure.

However, mechanic informedconsumer that vehicle was not onrecall or under warranty.

Rear passenger power window not operating properly. It will go down, but not go up, either from passenger door switch or driver's switch. Both switches and motor replaced at first repair shop but could not fix the problem. My local mercury dealer also wanted to replaced both new switches and new motor claiming all three were still bad. Two weeks, and three shops later, a ford dealer in the next town over said both switches and motor were fine ( i already knew that). He found a broken wire behind the emergency brake pedal behind the dash panel. A new section of wire was spliced in, but they are not sure how or why this wire broke in an unexposed location.

There was a recall on rear windshield glass on certain ford motor company vehicles.the insurance companies investigation determined that the damage sustained by the consumer's vehicle was from a flaw in the rear windshield glass.the insurance company request reimbursement from ford. **ansfer to occ***

On national tv there was a recall for ford expedition regarding water leaking from the windshield with the interior being soaked on a rainy day.i own a mercury mountaineer 2002, and am experiencing the exact same problem for about 5 months, and until recently it has worsened.when i called ford on 6/22/05,they explained that my vehicle id was not part of the recall.i would greatly appreciate having this investigated since it seemed to be quite dangerous for a windshield to be leaking water.when i touch the glass windshield i can actually move it.what if i hit a pot hole...could the glass shatter and break from lack of stability. I drive daily with my three children, and am very concerned about having the manufacturer fix this problem.should i have a new windshield put in? will this fix the problem or just temporarily stop the water from leaking inside?i would appreciate any direction in this matter.

The first time it windshield wipers failed was in sept. 2004. I was driving home from work ( it was raining) the wipers were working fine, then they began to move very slow and windshield washer fluid began to squirt out. Ihad to pull over to the side of the road because i couldn't see out of thefront window. I waited until the rain slowed down and preceded home with the wipers malfunctioning. Since the first incident the wipers will work fine for the first 10,15,20 minutes and start doing the same thing. The vehicle is at reedman mercury service center in langhorne pa. As this letter is being written. They tell me that there has been problems with the multi function switch in mercury products. They are going to replace this switch for $220.00 much to my disappoval. This is a saftey issure that should be taken care of by mercury.

The windshield wipers work very slow and the washer sprays all over the windshield and will not stop.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer who replaced, the multi function switch, and the problem continues.the problem recurred.the consumer was told on two occasions that the problem was unable to be duplicated.the consumer was also informed that the micro processor assembly needed to be replaced.currently the problem could not be duplicated. *sc

Right front wheel bearing went out and was replaced at 50,000 miles. I just replaced the same wheel bearing at 100,000 miles.the two rear bearings have also been diagnosed as failing and need to be replaced.this is the first vehicle i have had wheel bearing problems on.

While driving on the highway the front left original manufactures rim had a catastrophic failure. The rim in question after investigating it had a fracture that was perpendicular to the rotation of the rim which resulted in the loss of air pressure causing a secondary failure by the rim fracturing in the circumference causing the rim itself to separate into two pieces.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury mountaineer. The contact noticed that all four wheels were beginning to corrode from the rear to the front. He took the vehicle to the dealer several times and was told that the wheels needed to be replaced. He was also advised that they could not repair the vehicle free of charge since there was no related recalls. He called the manufacturer and was told that they would not repair the vehicle free of charge as it was outside the warranty. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current mileage was approximately 71,000. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

As i was driving, all 5 of the tire studs on my 2002 mercury mountaineer broke, which then caused my front passenger side wheel to fall off.when the tire fell off it tore the fender of my car.there was no damage to the tire or hub cap.
