October 18, 2005u. S. Department of transportationnational highway traffic safety administrationoffice of defects investigationnvs-210, 400 7th street swwashington, dc 20590 dear department of transportation: i am writing because of a safety concern with mercury 2000 mountaineer. My mountaineer, vin #[xxx], has a problem with the airbag safety system. I believe this problem is caused by a design deficiency. The airbag warning light on my instrument panel flashes several times and then comes on steady. I took it in for repair and the service representative at the ford dealer told me the wiring harness was bad. They said that tests showed that the harness was corroded. Since the harness runs under the carpet on the floor, water and salt had probably entered the harness and corroded it.they said that my airbag system was unreliable. I believe it is unreasonable and dangerous to install a critical safety system component in a known location of corrosives and moisture, unless that component is designed to protect against those hazards. It appears that the airbag wiring harness is not so designed. As these vehicles age, this could become more and more of a problem. The repair is expensive, i was quoted $970. The trade in value of my vehicle is about $8600. As these vehicles age they will have less and less value and the cost of repair will become a larger and larger percentage of vehicle value. I believe you should query ford motor company and find out how prevalent this problem is and see if the frequency of the problem is increasing. It should continue to be monitored as these vehicles age. Perhaps mercury should act to replace these harnesses before they become inoperative.[xxx] updated 07/18/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

While leaving parking lot, accelerater pedal became stuck. Driver came to a stop by hitting other cars. Air bags did not deploy. Cause unknown.

The air bags failed to deploy during the accident. Yh

We were rear ended and both seats broke, flinging us into the back seat.we then went into the oncoming lane (because my wife could no longer reach the steering wheel or the brakes) and were hit head on.complaint #1 - the seats should not have broken. Complaint #2 - the airbags never deployed.

Intermittent airbag light would come on.when i took to dealership, it was always out, and instead of paying extravagant diagnostic fees they said may not show problem, i did not get it looked at.it was repaired today....a harness electrical shortage which i feel should not be charged to the customer.the short is for something that only a certified tech repairs.airbags harnesses on this vehicle per the repair tech go out regularly, which sounds like a defect to me.the repair passed on to me was more than $300!also, iac attached with too little silicone, which causes the iac to burn and malfunction.it was also repaired.i do not have parts.....dealership kept them.

With brakes applied attempting to put vehicle in park, the vehicle lunged forward and was out of control and struck a light pole, went over concrete barrier onto next street, and neither air bag deployed.consumer also compalined several times about the brakes.

Dt: air bags did not deploy going at 35-40mph.states he did have an accident which totaled his front end, but neither air bag (l or r) deployed.

Consumer'sdaughter was traveling about 35mph andwas proceeding into the intersection while light turned green, another vehicle veered into the right side of consumer's vehicle.vehicle flipped twice onto the road, and landedupside down.daughter had to crawl out ofdriver's side window.upon impact, driver's air bag failed to deploy.

This has to be worst car i have ever owned. The radio display goes on when it wants, it makes terrible noises, rides terrible and it depreciates terrible. I will never buy another ford product again. This is a terrible car. Anyone that wants to buy one should not, it looks like a classy suv but it is a big piece of junk.

Consumer lost use of all accessories ie. Lights, mirrors, power door locks, wipers power windows etc.the consumer had gem module and wiper motor replaced.

The automatic locks do not work on all the doors.i've had these locks worked on, but they continue to not work.this is a safety issue, as the doors will not open at all.the driver's side rear door will not open when you try the auto-locks, and the lock cannot be manually pulled up, thus leaving the rear-seated occupant trapped in the car.this often times with the front passenger as well. It also happens with the rear hatch.

I am disable on june 11, 2014 i was traveling about 35 mph and suddenly flames gushed from the dash i stopped the ignition would not turn off fire wipped my right side and i broke my ankle trying to get out of the car.

Smoke coming from turn signal when being used. Happens only when you are turning left.back windshield wiper works for a few weeks then needs motor to be replaced. Stereo lights quite working will come on only if you are driving in the rain.

Lcd display on stereo/clock only works occasionally most of the time there is not a time display available. And we have various gauges that will not work and then will work for a brief time and then again stop working.

Brake lights were not lighting. Fuse was blown, replaced fuse, stepped on brake pedal, then poof of smoke at fuse inside, and under hood smoke continued for 2 minutes. Found connector for switch on master cylinder was melted and switch is still bad. Disconnected connector from shorted switch causing fuse to blow. Then replaced fuse and now brake lights work. The car wouldn't start so i had it towed to the dealership. The technician tried it and it started right up for him. They couldn't find anything wrong with it. I'm not sure if i have it right but i was told the reason it didn't start was i had the wrong type of fuel, winter verses summer. The temperature dropped after thunder storms during the night. There's been quite a few times when the car didn't start up on the first turn of the key but i didn't think anything of it. There was another time when it didn't want to start but eventually did. It was a rainy, snowy night. This last time when it didn't start it had rained also. I'm wondering if it has more to do with the rain and not the fuel.

The o/d light keeps flashing and it doesn't shift into gear when pulling out in front of oncoming traffic its vary dangerous for myself and other drivers please address this on going problem with this transmission

At 25 mph while applying gas pedal, engine revved, but vehicle slowed down instead.took to dealer who found transmission needed to be replaced. Ford will replaceitwith remanufactured transmission.traveling at 30-40 mph, the transmission slipped badly.

When accelerating, thedriver heard a knocking noise and the vehicle lost acceleration.the vehiclebucked and banged into gear, the over drive light flashed.

Transmission failure at 42,000 miles w/o warning while driving at highway speeds!

2000 mercury mountaineer transmission failure vehicle has only 64,000 miles, transmission has been power flushed by our local ford dealership with no correction, we were told the problem was shift flare, with the o/d light flashing is common with all 5r55e transmissions with 4.0l v6 engines. We were told it would be best to replace the transmission with a factory remanufactured unit, rather than try to repair the old transmission at a cost of $2500.00 to $3000.00 dollars. We are now to a point where we cannot drive thevehicle any great distance other than right around town. Assistance from ford would be greatly appreciated this vehicle is the fourth ford product we have owned, we now have doubts about our 2005 f150 4x4 supercrew we use to pull our 26' travel trailer approx 4860lbs. Our vehicle is in wonderful condition and we do not want to get rid of it, the manufacture needs to step up and help all the loyal ford owners that have believed in there products for many years.

I have a 2000 mercury mountaineer that started having transmission problems at 70k miles.it has an aod transmission and it wouldn't shift into gear when i would hit the gas to drive.i took it into the dealer i bought the suv from and they told me that i was low on transmission fluid and that was the problem so i had them fill the fluid.almost immediately it started going through fluid and at around 85k miles it slowly started having the shifting problems again.now it hardly shift at all.i did some research and it sounds like there is a major defect in the 2000's transmissions for both the mercury mountaineer and ford explorers.i truly believe that ford should be issuing a recall and fix the problem.there have many times where i was merging into oncoming traffic only to have my transmission fail to engage and i've almost been broadsided by the oncoming car.here is a website that talks about the transmission failures:http://www.carcomplaints.com/mercury/mountaineer/2002/transmission/transmission_failure.shtmlplease check it out and help us get the problem fixed.

While drivingat low speeds, the vehicle down shifted to low range. The 4wd and overdrive lights where flashing and whining along with an alarm sound coming from the dash.the engine was shut off and the key was removed, but the whining sound continued. *sc the consumer disconnected the battery and the noise stopped.

Just bought a used 2000 mercury mountaineer and this morning we experienced a problem with the transmission. Put it into reverse and it immediately shut down and started to roll backwards because of being on a slight incline. Put it back into park and tried again to have it happen again and again. Looked up on google and now find that this seems to be an inherited problem that ford is not addressing. What is our recourse on this matter?

2000 mercury mountaineer diagnosed with transmission failure - slipping between 2nd & 3rd gears.vehicle only has 50000 miles.

Consumer noticed an extreme amount of fluid in the driveway which did not appear to be oil.after taking the vehicle to the dealer it was discovered that head gasket blew out.consumer had the repairs done. Less than two months later, while driving , the gears would not connect properly.consumer had to have the transmission replaced.

Vehicle rolls backward on even the slightest incline while in drive.this appears to be a safely hazard as automatic transmission vehicles should not roll backward.the dealership's service department has refused to do anything as they say this is how the trucks normally work.

At 25 mph while applying gas pedal, engine revved, but vehicle started to slow down instead. Took vehicle to dealer who found that transmission needed to be replaced.ford replaced it with remanufactured transmission.at aspeed of 30 to 40 mph, the transmission slips and was replaced.

2000 mercury mountaineer transmission is defective. I have had to repair my transmission 3 times now.

Car was in park - after releasing the emergency brake - i tried to put the car in drive and the gear shaft broke off - could not put the car in gear - vehicle was parked on a hill at the time.

The problems have existed since i bought the truck.at 55/60 miles the front end starts bumping up and down to the point it's unsafe.the dealer has changed the tires and the driftshaft assembly, but the problems persists.both the dealer and the ford rep. Say this is a normal part of driving this vehicle, but when the truck is vibrating and bumping on the highway i do not believe it's normal.other mountaineener drivers tell me this is not normal.just this past week the goodyear dealer identified a bad tire and replaced it.goodyears says i also have two bent rims and the lincoln dealer says i don't.they did replace the two front rims because goodyear identified the fact that all four rims were/are bent.i am continuing to work with the dealer but feel this problem should be documentedand would like to know if there is data concerning this problem.the ford reg. Rep and the ford service dept. Have said point blank their responsibility is to support the local dealer.where does a consumer get help?

Rear seat belt will not release for more room causing discomfort for the consumer. Dealer notified.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the driver side seat fractured and collapsed backward. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle had previous recall repairs done for the same failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 144,000.

Motor vehicle accident caused by defective seat.

Drivers seat leather is torn.when taken to the dealer was informed that it's a manufacturing defect "overstitched" but that it is not covered under the extended warranty.contacted ford motor company and received a phone call informing me that "they would have to side with the dealership, not to fix the seat"

The power seat adjuster broke, which caused the seat to tilt backwards.

Consumer stated driver side seat motor had died. Vehicle was serviced.technician noticed vehicle was manufactured with the wrong motor. Mr

We were rear ended and both seats broke, flinging us into the back seat.we then went into the oncoming lane (because my wife could no longer reach the steering wheel or the brakes) and were hit head on.complaint #1 - the seats should not have broken. Complaint #2 - the airbags never deployed.

The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for recall 03504 related to repairs of the driver's side seat bolt.thedealer promised to have vehicle for only a couple of hours, howeverthevehicle remained at dealer for one week.*nlm

I have a 2000 mercury mountaineer that i have had for 2yrs. Now. I keep up the maintenance on this car. I keep the oil changed tires rotated, brakes fixed, pass the emission test every year since purchasing it. I've had this squealing high pitch grinding noise comin from the rear tires.it is very loud. I have new brakes all the way around, shoes, rotors, pads,in it still makes this very loud noise.it has gotten louder since i have all new brakes. I don't know what this noise is, but i know its embarrassing to drive, cause the noise is so loud.

Consumer noticed when depressing the brake pedal would travel to floor board. Dealer was contacted and replaced brakes.mrconsumer felt brakes failed prematurely.after only 8 months brakes started to squeak.

When i attempted to stop on a dry daygoing approximately 20 mph my brakes did not operate properly.they grabbed and then released with a forward motion.i continued to apply pressure with both feet and the brakes still reacted in the same fashion.subsequently i hit the car in front of me.i hadthe car towed to the mercury dealer and they stated they could find nothing wrong. I am concerned and actually worried about driving my car.

While i was parking the car in the garage, i came to a stopabout 12 inches from a file cabinet against the back wall. Then i put the car in reverse to move back a few inches for better clearance. All of a suddenthe car unexpectedly accelerated forward and crashed into the file cabinet and totaled it plus damaged the front bumper, grill and hood. Note that applying the brake did not stop it.very thankful that no one was in the front of the car when this happen.

With brakes applied attempting to put vehicle in park, the vehicle lunged forward and was out of control and struck a light pole, went over concrete barrier onto next street, and neither air bag deployed.consumer also compalined several times about the brakes.

While driving at 25 mph the brakes were applied but they didn't hold.the dealership indicated that this was caused by the brake calipers freezing up and getting hot which resulted in the seals failing. *nlmrotors, pads and shoes were replaced.

Disintegrationof brakes and rotors at2,500 miles, they were woren down to the metal.first dealer stated that rotors were defective, but abruptly changed and said it was regularwear and tear.vehicle currently parked due to problem not being rectified and persisting.please describe details.

My drive to work is ~ 14 miles, on 1/8/2007 while pulling into a parking space (traveling at a very low rate of speed) my vehicle lost power steering.i actually thought the vehicle stalled, but after coming to a stop i pressed the gas pedal and the vehicle was still running, the power steering came back, i turned the steering wheel all the way left and then right a number of times.i see a similar complaint (odi id number: 10038075), this hasn't happened since.

Consumer stated smoke emitted from the steering column while driving.mrthe radio was replaced.

The steering gear was replaced, the dealership did not complete front end alignment after replacement which resulted in excessive wear of the front tires, consumer is requesting reimbursement for replacement tires that were required.*mjs

While driving on a dirt road at 15 mph, vehicle suddenly lost power steering.dealership indicated that this was caused by a bolt in the steering shaft coming loose and falling off.

My 2000 mountaineer had 17,000 when purchased. I had noticed the dealer had just put new 235/75r15 goodyear wrangler r/ts on it. I was not suspicious but should have been. Ever since purchased i have had a vibration in the front end and my front tires have worn on the inside al the way down to a unsafe tread depth within 10,000 miles. The dealer alligned the front and checked for front end problems two days after purchase. At that time they found it was out but claimed they had just alligned it three days before also. At around 30,000 miles i had to replace the front tires because they were unsafe. I took them to the dealer and the gm told me that it was normal tire wear. I know quite a bit about cars but he did not know that. At that time they checked the front end allignment again and check for problems again and found nothing. A few weeks later the vbration got worse so i jacked it up myself and found that the one a-arm nut was loose. I tightend it and drove back to the dealerand showed one of their mechanics the problem. It had loosend up again already so he tightend all the a-arm nuts. Ileft and within 10 miles one was loose again. I went back to the dealer and told them to replace all the a-arm bolts and nuts. No single event led to the failure.this appears to be a structural defect in the rear lift door of the mercury mountaineer.the mounting plates for the rear door hinges have failed.note that the hinges have not failed.the failure is in the mounting point in the door.one side has completely cracked through and the other side has partially cracked.the consequences are that if both mount points fail there will not be any thing holding the top of the rear lift door.the door could therefore separate from the car and fall off the vehicle.if the mount points fail, the only items holding the door would be the side lift cylinders. These cylinders would not be strong enough to keep the door attached to the vehicle.the failure was discovered 2 days ago.actions taken so far are limited to getting estimates to fix problem.mercury dealer representative was not helpful since vehicle is a 2000 mountaineer and not under any warranty. His response was limited to saying he had neverseen the problem before and giving me the name of a collision repair shop. However, i believe this is a major structural failure and a severe safety issue sinceif the hinge mounts fail completely and the door falls off the vehicle when on the highway, a major accident might result.

Water leakage in interior of vehicle is a health hazard due to mold issues, especially for children. Sickness from mold can be a lifelong affliction. It is a health safety issue.water leaking into the interior of a car, whether by defective assembly or defective design, should not happen. It seems to be a common problem with ford (and probably other make) vehicles that have moonroofs or sunroofs. There is no question that something should be done to stop this. Ford's implicit denial of blame is a moral failure.the following was sent to ford...what is your vehicle sales or service issue?:my 2000 mercury mountaineer has been leaking in the interior from a kinked moonroof drain hose. I took it to a bodyshop to be repaired. The drain hose was permanently kinked from sloppy assembly. The drain hose had to be replaced. What action has your dealer taken to address the issue?:my dealer saw the drain hose and agreed it was a factory assembly defect. They gave me the 1-800-392-3673 and told me to contact that number for reimbursement of the cost to repair. I was told there was no protocol or recall to address the drain hose issue. Researching on the internet, it seems to be a not uncommon problem with explorers and mountaineers.what assistance are you seeking from ford motor company?:ford should at least reimburse me for the cost of replacing the drain hose. $272.85. There were other issues such as mold which i was able to fix myself. I still have the defective drain hose. I am certain the dealer would provide an affadavit that this was an assembly defect. I have a 2000 mercury mountaineer and my stabilizer bars have broken twice now when i spoke to ford mechanics they stated that it was unusual for that to happen when i looked for recalls on internet i found that (ford corp) had recalled 95-97 for this safety problem as a suv can turn over. When i contacted (ford) they said sorry not our problem this issue has been going on since we bought the vehicle in 2000 now they want me to repair it again and they do not want to be responsible at any point and i believe that to be wrong and how many other mountaineers or explorers have the same issues and wont know about it till there vehicles turn over and take a life is this what ford waits for before they act and recall a vehicle please help i felt so alone when i spoke to ford.i believe that ford should stand behind there product . Thank you.

Although i do not have the recalled firestone tires on my vehicle, i do not feel safe driving it with non-recalled firestone tires.i have tried talking to ford, my selling dealer and firestone dealers to receive credit for my tires towards the purchase of 5 goodyear replacements.i feel that ford made the decision to put firestone tires on my vehicle at the factory and should be required to provide credit towards the purchase of a safer tire.this whole recall is a mess and is confusing, i believe, on purpose.the only thing i hear is how consumers were mis-using the tires.how can you misuse a tire on an suv?the automakers show them driving across the desert, up mountains and through rivers.

It is disappointing that the recall of tires is not broadened to encompass all manufacturer codes versus just the decatur plant.without definitive reports that only the decatur plant code is 100% responsible for the shredding tires, no one with these tires can feel safe on the road.i would like a report that clearly defines only the decatur code is shredding and none other. I was driving to an intersection with my family while going 45 mph.i noticed black coming through the vents.i pulled off to a gas station parking lot.i proceeded to use fire extinguishers under the hood, the fire department had to come put it out.they did a look through and determined the fire started at the fuse box.i went home and researched that this is a recurring problem with this type of vehicle.i'm now out the 6500 i used to purchase it.i cant fix it or trade it in now.

While sitting in drive ie: at a light the car will start to race and then accelerate and take off the brakes will not stop the car.the only way to stop the car is to put throw it into park.the first two times it happened i thought it was something i had done.however on the third time while pulling out of my driveway the car took off and shoot across the street i was only able to stop it after entering my neighbors' front lawn.i was very fortunate that no cars were coming down the street and no children were nearby.however it did take down part of my driveway fence.of course it was taken back to the dealer they couldn't find anything wrong .then a week and a half later it happens again while sitting at a light twice.the dealer had my car since thurs and can't find anything wrong i'm afraid to go and get it.

I received a motive in august 2007 which advised me to contact my local dealer who was authorized by ford motor company to "install a fused wiring harness into the speed control system" of my 2000 mercury mountaineer (recall: 05s28). That until this repair was completed, i should park my vehicle "away from structures to prevent a potential underhood fire from spreading". I have attempted to have this repair completed at least 10 times since receiving this notice, always being told that the "required parts are not in yet". I believe i have worn down the service department with my calls, since i was last told: "they will probably never be in" !!

I was on my way home from work(approx 12 miles) and decided i'd try out the cruise control in my newly acquired 2000 mountaineer 302 awd. The first part of the commute is what i would consider harmless and a very safe stretch to test out this feature so i press the cruise button to set my speed at the posted speed limit of 55mph. All was well until i approached a sharp hair pin curve about 4 miles into the trip.i gently started to apply the brake to cancel the cruise but the vehicle didn't respond to my attempt.in a state of panic, i firmly apply the brake to reduce speed and was only able to drop approximately 6-7 mph. Still well above the advised limit for that particular curve.after making it though the curve, the mountaineer transmission down shifted and i was off to the races. I panicked and in doing so, failed to process and think clearly. My instinct was to keep pounding on the brakes in hope that the cruise cable with break or pop free. At 70mph my brakes were useless. It accelerated just past 80mph and finally right before my turn off onto the road that i live, my head cleared and i turned the ignition key to the off position and was able to coast into my neighborhood. As i exited the vehicle, every ounce of coolant was being shot out of the radiator and all four brake rotors were glowing cherry red. I was scared the thing was going to catch fire.like incident report prior to mine, my cruise cable retainer had malfunctioned and was no longer anchored to its usual position. Ford has a major flaw in the way this system was designed and needs to take action so someone doesn't get killed. Hands down, the absolute scariest situation i've ever experienced.

While leaving parking lot, accelerater pedal became stuck. Driver came to a stop by hitting other cars. Air bags did not deploy. Cause unknown.

Last night while traveling home on the nys thruway, approximately 5 miles from my exit, the cruise control didn't disengage.it was late, and we came upon some road work, so i depressed the coast button several times to lower my speed.i have done this numerous times before without any mechanical/electrical/software problem.when this didn't lower my speed, i depressed the off button numerous times-this didn't work-so i depressed the brake-and this didn't work.i became scared and immediately put the suv in neutral.the engine rpm went high over 5 on the tachometer so i put the transmission back into drive.the speed control indicator dash light was no longer on but the suv's rpm was still higher than normal like the speed control was still engaged.the suv now was not trying maintain previous speed but it was still pulling ahead without and any gas pedal.using a lot of brakes, i was able to slow down way in advance and stop.i was able to drive and stop in my driveway (approximately 1.5 miles from the thruway exit).i purchased my 2000 mountaineer new and have never abused it.no off road - mostly just winter driving.less than 47 k miles.i noticed a recall for the speed control cable which can become flared at the end.this is for certain mountaineers equipped with 4.0l sohc engines.my engine is a v-8; the older 5.0l that earlier mustangs had.i am thankful that this happened late at night with no traffic on the thruway and very little in the village of saugerties.so there you have it.i'm not sure where this glitch is-possibly the speed control cable is flared and will not loosen to allow regular idle, or something else in the speed control software or something else.i consider myself an above average driver.this could have been tragic if this happened in traffic with a less experienced driver.good luck and keep up the good work.not an easy thing to do considering everything you do.thank you for making our daily lives safer.
