Electrical problems.

When i use the cruise control and then turn it off i can't seem to push my gas pedal when you are driving the vehicle. I have to keep putting extreme pressure on the accelerator pedal until something breaks or pops and then it allows me to push the pedal. I keep having problems with smoke coming from on top of the steering column like something is burning when you are driving, now i have electrical problems to where my horn will not work anymore. I keep having problems with the front frame of the suv. The frame sounds and feels like it is going to fall apart and it doesn't matter if you are driving or stationary. The mechanic says it is the sway bar that is causing that problem. I have been calling ford about it and they keep saying there is no recall on my vehicle.

I was at a gas station making a purchase with my disabled mother. We left the store, and got into my truck. I started my truck and proceed to dive towards the exit of the gas station when i smelled something like burning rubber. I said to my mother that something smelled funny and then looked and saw a thin steam of smoke coming up from in between my legs. I parked the truck and jumpers out leaving my om in the car. I then saw a fire inside of the metal track in which my seat moves mechanically underneath my seat, where the wires are. I ran into the gas station panicked and asked the attendant for a fire extinguisher, to which he replied " no, i don't know i don't have one" and did nothing. So i ran back outside to my truck where my mother was having trouble exiting my truck as she has anxiety and health issues. She finally got out and a tow truck that was driving by, saw the smoke getting heavier and flowing out of my truck, he stopped and out the fire out with an extinguisher. The flames were coming through my seat and i was at a gas station. I was terrified. I have ptsd and this hasn't helped my sleep at all. Also, we were at a gas station and as you know, fire is very dangerous at a gas station. We could've been seriously hurt or worse.

As i parked the vehicle in the garage, i noticed smoke coming from under the hood.i exited the vehicle and observed flames in the upper part of the left front wheel well.i put out the fire but was unable to open the hood.the vehicle was towed to the dealership where it was determined the fire had started in the relay/fuse box located in the left rear of the engine compartment.i asked both the dealership and my insurance company (united services automobile association), if a recall or technical service bulletin and been issued by ford concerning this type of incident.i have not received a reply from either.

We really don't have any information regarding the incident. The car had been parked outside for approximately 4 hours, when upon waking at around 3:50 am on sunday morning, i smelled a strange odor emanating from somewhere in the house. As i investigated, i soon found out that the smell was not in the house, but outside, and that's when i found my car ablaze. The fire department had already been called by the time i realized what it was, and the fire was put out. No police came, and no report was filed. The only information given to any official was my name, my cell number, the license plate number, and possibly the vin. The 1997 mercury mountaineer now sits in my driveway.

The contact owns a 1997 mercury mountaineer. He experienced difficult steering, because the front sway bar linkagehad fractured.secondly he would intermittently smell an odor of gasoline inside of the vehicle.thirdlyduring brake application the accelerator pedal would also stick. This condition would cause the vehicle to lurch forward. Lastly the main bar that held the two bumpers together had corroded.the failures were described in recalls (98v060000, 00v422000, 00v402000). However he was advised by representatives from the dealer and the manufacturer that the previous owner had the vehicle repaired according the recalls. The current mileage was approximately 157,000. Instrumental lights do not illuminate properly causing poor visibility, no able to be rectified.

Driver door lock will only unlock, have replaced and still fails. Rear and pass. L/u button still control entire lock circuit.

Rear passenger side doors cannot be opened from inside. Whenever the door is locked or unlocked this would happen.

Both rear door latches can not be released from inside vehicle. First right rear failed and about six months later left rear failed. Necessary to roll down windows to reach outside for door handle or have front seat passenger get out and open rear door. Child proof locks checked and verified selected to normal operating position. Have never selected child lock out position as we do not have any children. Have been told many ford explorer owners have experienced same problem. This is potentially a serious situation if rear set passengers are unable open their doors without the aid of others. I have no idea what it will cost to have this repaired as i haven't been to a dealer yet.

- the contact stated that while drivingthe 1997 mercury mountaineerwith 120000 failure mileage at 30 mph on a windy day the hood latch failed and the hood opened.the hood hinges stopped the hood from slamming into the front windshield.the vehicle had not been taken to the dealer and has not been repaired.the current mileage was 120000.

I currently own a 1997 mercury mountaineer.my wife purchased this mountaineer in early 1998, and up until now we have been very happy with its performance.recently, i was charging the battery overnight.i left for work and instructed my wife on disconnecting the charger before she used the car.my wife disconnected the charger and closed the hood on the vehicle and took it out to run errands.unfortunately, when she closed the hood, it did not latch completely.however, in this case i would expect the secondary, safety latch to hold the hood closed until the vibrating hood was noticed and the hood closed properly.this did not happen.turning out of our subdivision, and at a relatively low rate of speed (30 mph), the hood released and jammed into the up position.not only did this create a safety hazard since the hood, in the up position, offers no visual gap with which the driver can maintain a reasonable view of the roadway in order to pilot the vehicle to a safe location, but it also bent the hinges on which the hood is mounted.when i inspected the vehicle, i found that the spring that holds the safety latch in its temporary locked position had broken.gladly, this happened in a low traffic volume local roadway and my wife was able to guide the vehicle to a safe location, eventually creeping back to our house after she had forced the hood down.had this happened on a high volume street, chances are that her and my one-year-old son would have been in an accident.we have diligently followed the maintenance schedule for the vehicle, and the secondary, safety latch gave no indication of being broken until it failed.it appears that we will have to have the hood and its mounting hinges replaced.

Parking brake release failed.nlm

Inside parking brake handle broke off while releasing.

Major and recurring issue with front drive shaft, and front differential, grinding, shaking, with near crash due to difficulty to handle (this was on the way to the mechanic).

While driving, the transmission slipped. The rpm started racing at a high rate. The consumer restarted the vehicle.please provide more information.

I had just gotten into the driver's seat of my parked 1997 mercury mountaineer at an auto repair shop lot when i remembered that i needed to retrieve an article from underneath the seat. I got out of the vehicle and knelt down next to it. As i reached under the seat, the car door hit me and dragged me along the ground. I then realized the vehicle was not only moving in reverse but was picking up speed, as it was on a slight incline. I knew i could not stop this heavy suv; i also saw that its left front tire was heading right for me. I was then a 60-year-old female who had played sports and was still in good physical condition. I did a football-style tuck and rolled away from the mountaineer to avoid getting run over. The vehicle stopped moving only after hitting another parked and unoccupied vehicle: the pickup truck that belonged to the owner of the auto repair shop. Local police investigated and found no human error or fault; no ticket was issued. Also, while i suffered some scrapes and bruises i did not need emt or hospital attention.i reported this first-ever accident to my auto insurance company, but the adjuster expressed no interest in following up on what i and the auto repair shop owner still believe to be its root cause: a ford suv transmission design flaw that allows for slippage out of park position under inexplicable conditions, such as pavement incline and/or motor vibration. No transmission parts were damaged or replaced on this vehicle because of this incident; nor has there been a repeat of this problem.

While vehicle was parked onan incline with ignition runningvehcile jumped into reverse and went about 300 feet and hit 2 parked vehicles.

Consumer states the overdrive light was on and end of gear selector does not light up, dealer found blown fuse causing internal shift lever short, replaced shift lever assembly and re-routed wiring.*yd

Driver's seat belt will not fasten.

I attempted to connect the two portions of the driver front seat belt and the latching mechanism in the female portion would not latch, thereby defeating my ability to secure the seat belt.i took the vehicle to a repair shop that quoted me almost $200 to repair the belt, indicating the oem kit was almost $150.someone is profiteering on defective safety equipment.

I have a 1997 mercury mountaineer. In which just recently my seatbelt(driver) does not hold. It keeps on sliding out. There is no tension in the buckle. Itook it in to ford to get it repaired in which i have to pay $87.24. They said that the mileagehas a lot to do with it.i looked up some recallson the internet and found that there is a recall on the navigators and the expeditions on the 1997-2000 models and also on the 2000 mountaineers . Which includes ford exployers f-150,ect. I feel that there in no difference in the seatbelts on these vehicles. Safety comes first. Infact the day it happened i called ford about this problem. And they gave me an appointment one week later. In which i think that a seatbelt is very important and they should have seen me that day. Please help me.

Dt*:the contact stated the driver side seat belt buckle assembly will not hold the seat belt buckle when inserted.the buckle assembly releases the seat belt buckle and does not lock.the vehicle has not been taken to a local dealer or independent repair shop for inspection.

The brake system has had problems ever since purchase.i am writing this defect report to waht can be done and so other drivers of similar vehicles do not go through the hassles i've bee through.thank you.

When the brakes were applied the pedal went to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. The dealer hasrepaired the vehicle three times prior tothis incident.

While parking at a right angle on a steep hill overlooking a busy road, the car almost at a standstill, the driver's foot on the brake, the car engine suddenly started screaming, the gas pedal depressed on its own and the car surged forward over a concrete parking curb and mowed down atall palm tree.my daughter-in-law would have been killed if not for hitting the tree, as she had already taken off her seatbelt and opened her door - we were so close to a standstill.the tree stopped the car from going over a very steep hill at a high rate of speed onto traffic on the road below.the replacement value of the tree is not yet known.i have since discovered via channel 4 tv in uk, and dateline nbc that this is a known problem with this vehicle and people have been killed, as my daughter-in-law and i would have been if not for the palm tree.i have now had the cruise control disabled on the vehicle so that i can drive it, as i can not ethically trade it in and let someone else buy it when i know it has a problem. I hope that by registering this brief complaint that it will help you to influence ford lincoln mercury to acknowledge the fault recall these vehicles.thank you.

Front abs brakes failed, vehicle lost control, resulting in a crash.

Anti lock brake system failed on several occasions, once resulted in an accident.

I needed my brakes (all 4) done, and noticed when i stepped on my emergency brake the suv would not stop and barelyslowed, after getting it back from dealer which i informed of th e brake, i tested the e brake agiain and all though it now grabbed the car would still move forward in drive with no applied preasur to the gas. I took it back and told them the e brake still did not work right , that it would not pass inspection(keeping the suv from moving at 1100 rpms).this is what was told to me all mercury mountaineers and ford explorers had this problem with the emergency brake and it can't be helped, he told me he could bring out a brand new one and it would do the same. I asked what about inspection- it won't pass he said bring it to them for inspection and they would pass it . "not good!" what can be done about this? if it is true all suvs explorers and mountaineers are like this they should be recalled don't you think.?

When approaching stop sign, at intersection, vehicle accelerated when brakes were applied, causing a collision with the car in front of mine. The brake pedal was depressed all the way to the floor, and the engine roared as if accelerating. We have had one other similar incident in which the vehicle accelerated while braking. Dealer explained that driver had foot on brake and accelerator at same time. In second incident, i am sure that i had my foot only on the brake. Dealer examined vehicle after each incident and could find nothing wrong.

Abs brake failure, applied brakesand engine area roared, , pedal went the floor, loss of effectiveness, impact 12:00 position , speed 10mph, low speed.

The brakes failed, causing accident.

Brakes have failed two times due to overheating.

When driving the vehicle and applyingthe brakes, the brakes went straight to the floorboard, and the conumer still had his foot on the brakes.vehicle kept going consumer said this was the second time thatthis problem has happened.

Brake caliper came loose due to bolts breaking/failing. Info sent to ford/mercury 2-22-01 and they said this was incidental and not a concern to them. I informed them that the dealer we had purchased the vehicle from was out of business. The gentleman who i talked to was named wayne.i can email letter and photos of the scored rim and failed bolts that i had mailed to ford.we had to replace rim and tire due to damage costing us about $600.service managers and mechanics told us this was frequent for these bolts to break with ford brake systems. I was just driving to work....i hate to think what could have happened driving on interstate highways or pulling our camper!!i requested ford to reimburse for parts and work time lost.

Front brake rotorswere rusted with marks. Consumertookvehicle to aauto repairshop, and mechanic found the problem. While driving on freeway placed automobile in cruise control. After a while automobilebegan to speed up out of control.consumercould not disengage automobile. Applied brakes until rear brakes caught on fire. No injuries.

Thebrake master cylinder malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance which almost resulted in an accident.dealer claimed that the wires were tampered with.consumer denied the allegation.

Brake andgas pedals are too close together. Sometimes when pressing brakesfoot is actually ongas pedal, once consumer ran right intogarage.

Brake pedal too close to accelerator pedal, causing them to be depressed simultaneously.

As consumer depressed the brake pedal to come to a stop, consumer's foot also rested on the accelerator pedal causing consumer to rear end another vehicle.consumer feels the design of the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are too close. If consumer has wide feet it couldcause misapplication on the pedal, resulting in an accident.

The gasand brake pedals are so close together that when brakes are applied in an panic stop driver steps on the accelerator also. The dealer has not been notified.

Please be advised, i am a police officer operating this leased vehicle and i feel this is a very dangerous condition. On several occasions, i've indicated at least six times to me in the past month, this vehicle will begin to exccerate any time you deeply depress the brake pedal. This generally happens at a complete stop when you may inadvertently just hold down the brake pedal. It also would become extremely dangerous if you were forced to slam on the brakes, as you would generally panic and try to depress the pedal all the way to the floor. The brake pedal is not overly close to the excelerator pedal, but apparently the normal foot movement from one pedal to another is not far enough to avoid depressing both. I can't express how serious this situation can be, it has caused sudden bursts of exceleration from complete stops, and can only imagine what it would do at higher speed panic stops. I wouldn't doubt that this has already been the subject or cause of many minor as well as high speed accidents, as the driver would actually be accelerating at the same time he or she is trying to brake.

Dealer inspected clunking noise in turns and over bumps during mild/moderate acceleration.diagnosis: lower steering column was worn and causing noise.dealer confirmed that failure of this part would result in loss of control of vehicle.dealer was unable to answer why this part could possible wear out after 40,000 miles of normal driving.

Truck was hit on the side in the rear and rolled over 2 times.

If driving through a puddleright front wheel splashes water ontoserpetine belt, resulting in temporary loss of power steering control/ alternator charge, and air conditioning.vehicle has been checked by dealer, who advised consumer thatsince there was no recall it was not their problem.

Outer right connecting tie rod threads stripped from inner connecting tie rod, causing seperation, that resulted in instantaneous loss of steering control.

The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

I have owned my 1997 mercury mountaineer since 1998.within a year after purchase one of the rear door mechanisms broke.since it is rare for anyone to ride in the back seat, i didn't bother fixing it.this past weekend the other side broke.it is impossible for a rear passenger to exit the vehicle in an emergency without someone opening the doors from outside.i noticed this same complaint has been filed in your database by numerous customers.i phoned ford/mercury at their toll free number and was told there was no factory recall on this issue.i phoned my local dealer and was told this was a reoccuring problem with my model vehicle and that ford had made design changes to subsequent model years but had refused to recall the earlier models.this is a danger to anyone riding in the back seat of these vehicles, as the door breaks without warning.when you try to exit you just can't.once again, ford has received numerous complaints and has refused to act in the welfare of its customers.

Pulling handle on either door while locked will not unlock door.instead handle breakage is likely to occur, trapping occupants inside vehicle.this has happened to me on two separate occasions. Door can only be opened from exterior of vehicle afterwards.

The back doors lock automatically, the inside doors handles on both sides have broken, and no one in the back seat can get out of the vehicle without opening the door from the outside.if the vehicle caught fire, no one in the back could get out quickly.

Rear driver's side automaticdoor locks whenvehicle is in gear. Door locks, and has to be opened from the outside in order to get out of vehicle.dealer has not seen vehicle.

Two rear doors won't open from the inside. Handles stick out and wont move from the outside.in event of an emergency occupant may be stuck.common problem.please provide further information.

The rear door does not remain in the upright positiondue to thedefective struts .

Both interior back door lockswill not allow escape from the interior.i know of other explorer/mountaineers with the exact same problem

Entire vehicle will vibrate when it reaches speeds above 35 mph.consumer stated that a determination could not be made forreason ofvibration.please provide any additional information/attachments.

I was one of the fortunate former owners of firestone wilderness at tires.on january 28,2000 i visited a local tire kingdom inc tire dealership in clearwater florida for a possible front end alignment and tire balancing because i was complaining about a vibration in my front end of my97 mercury mountaineer. When we purchased this vehicle these tires were on them the first one blew coming down a mountain and i was lucky that there was a turn off so that i could change it. That one was replaced on jan 19 1999 with another firestone wilderness and the other front tire in september of 1999 at montgomery wards with wrangler rt. Then on may 31, 2000 i had to replace the back 2 again with wrangler rt's. This was do to the tires all shredding and pealing like an onion. Luckily no one was hurt. Each time this happened my vehicle was knocked out of alignment and had to be realigned besides having the tires replaced. Am i eligible for reimbursement for all tires. I have only had the tires for one year (june 1999) and have only put about 13,000 miles on them when i experienced a blow-out. My left rear tire literally exploded - the sound was deafening, like shattered glass. Fortunately, my five-year-old son was not with me, but what if he was and something worse had happened? additionally, although not relevant to the recall, the tires make the vehicle harder to control and provide a very rough ride. If i accidentally hit a pot hole, i better have both hands on the steering wheel. And since i have had the tires, i am constantly losing hubcaps - yes hubcaps (four in less than one year). I did not have these problems with the goodyear wranglers that were originally installed on the vehicle (no handling problems, no lost hubcaps). About 1 week prior to the august 17, 2000 date, i noticed a change in the way the tires felt while driving at slow speeds. I then had my wife drive the vehicle slowly down the street and i walked behind and noticed a bulge in the left rear tire. I then took it to the firestone store in garland, texas and they said it was a road hazard problem. I knew i hadn't hit anything in the road since i had been driving the vehicle since october of 1999 and it had driven fine until this incident.they sold me a discounted tire and charged me $65.23 to replace it. I had them move the spare (same dot and size) to the left rear and put the new tire on the front. They kept the bad tire and sent me on my way. Then about november, 2000 the same thing happened to the tire that i had them put on the left rear. I then took it to an independent dealer that sells firestone in irving. They agreed that this tire was failing due to tread separation. They didn't have another wilderness at to replace it with so they gave me a competitors smallertire and made it the spare. Was open and were again told they would work something out.after the vehicle had been dropped off, we received a call indicating that we would need to pay for all 4 new tires (replaced with goodyear wrangler rt/s (tires, labor, tax:$379.01).i kept the defective tires and my receipt.i don't know how firestone can maintain that tires manufactured only at the decatur plant are the unsafe tires for the recall. We bought our mercury mountaineer in january, 1998 (mfgd in april, 1997) serial #[xxx] and within the first year we noticed the sidewall and tire tread was peeling from the tire.we brought this to the dealer's attention (hatfield's lincoln mercury located in columbus, oh) and they dismissed it.we told them the suv vibrated and rumbled and rode very, very rough.they said to rotate the tires.it continued to do it and continues to this day (9/13/00).we have had the tires rotated many times.we are very much concerned about this situation and follow the news releases closely since the tire recall.we have had much trouble with these tires and the garage continuously dismissed our concerns.we travel cross country at posted speeds and throughout the southwest frequently.we have now moved to albuquerque, nm, and are even more concerned since it is hot weather and desert area.we continue to have rumble and vibration in the tires.we went to a firestone dealer to check the dot code and he said they were w2.we checked with another location and they said the same, w2.however, as we have always believed, the peeling is very evident including the tread layer.we are uncomfortable with these facts.we believe a further investigation should be conducted and our tires recalled as well.should anything horrible happen, it would be a terrible travesty of justice.we feel firestone is responsible and ford and the nhtsa should hold them as such. While turning into an intersectionvehicle started to rev and take off. Motor on vehicle was going faster and faster.foot was on brake, and vehicle would not stop. After 10 seconds motor was back to normal. This has occurred on three separte occasions, one time there was an accident where the consumer hit the vehicle in front of him, there were no injuries, consumer found service bulleting 97s67 and states that this exactly describes the problem the vehicle is experiencing.

When brakes applied the vehicle suddenly accelerated moving forward at approximately a foot per second shifted to neutral rpm's at approximately 3000vehicle returned to normal

Consumer received recall notice (97v-074) regarding throttle linkage and control failure which was not repaired due to scheduling problems.

When applying the brakes forvehicle to come to a stop, engine revs, causing an sudden acceleration.the brakesare unableto stop vehicle. Dealer has been contacted.

Manufacturer's recall 98r -o3 ford/throttle. On several occasions, since 31-august, 1999, consumer contacted dealerto have recall honored. But still unable to get repairs done. Asking nhtsa to help in this matter.

The contact's husband owns a 1997 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that when the brake pedal was released, the vehicle unintentionally accelerated. As a result, the contact's husband rear ended another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

Whileparking vehicle suddenly accelerated in reverse for no reason. Cause undetermined.

The truck came to a stop, the owner hit the brakes but the truck kept going, and driver slammed on the brake andhit another car,and went through a stop sign. The engine was racing the entire time with his foot was on the brake.

Owner states that while driving vehicle at 60mph and taking foot of gas the vehicle did not slow down, owner noticed that vehicle was gaining speed while approaching other vehicles. Owner had to use brakes consistently to stop vehicle.

While sitting in traffic or at a red light, vehicle has lunged or accelerated, vehicle has been taken in to be looked at but no one can seem to find the problem.

While driving on freeway placed automobile in cruise control. After a while automobilebegan to speed up out of control.consumercould not disengage automobile. Applied brakes until rear brakes caught on fire. No injuries.

The v-6 engine type has been recalled to correct the problem i have with the 302 v-8, but you have not recalled the v-8 engine, why not????

The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

The vehicle experienced unexpected acceleration.the only way to stop the vehicle was to shift into neutral or park.vehicle was taken to the dealer. Dealercould not determine the cause of theproblem.this has occurred five times.

Backing out of drivewayconsumer moved shift lever from reverse into drive, vehcle suddenly lurched forward, causing a loss of control, resulting in an accident.dual airbags did not deploy.

While driving vehicle & accelerating. Started to apply brakes to slow down, but vehicle increased in speed. Pumped brakes to decrease speed. Problem happened once. Taking vehicle to dealership to check.

Sudden acceleration caused accident due to throttle linkage failure.

Car accelerates involuntarily at stop lights and in parking situation after 20+ miles of driving have been performed.sometimes, vehicle will not go below 2,800 rpm during a coast and will not disengage throttle.the pedal is fine, and the cable is fine.is now in second dealership in under two months and same problem cannot be corrected.

My 1997 mercury mountaineer (that i purchased feb 2010) is experiencing the same acceleration problems as described in the 4.0 sohc campaign # 00v422000 and action # ea99001. I have to apply extra acceleration to make the car drive when engine is "cold". After it warms up, or if i start the engine and allow it to warm up before driving, i do not have that problem. Has there been any other v8 complaints?

I bought this mercury in oct98 .it is now jan of 99 and i have had quite a few problems .a warrenty came with this car, and we have been there twice ;one for the transfer case, and switch for the power seat , leak on rear hatchwindow. Now im returning it for throttle malfunction. I almost killed my children and myself .i made my children jump out of the car while doing aprox. 5miles an hour.the more i stepped on the brakes the more the engine idled faster . I dont know anything about cars i am a housewife. I just wish i knew about this defect in the car so it couldbeen corrected before i went on vacation .it is a nice car. I wish mercury would notify theirecustomers of any defects. Thank you very much for this questionair, it helped my family alot . Thank you.dawn gag liano.

Whenfirst pressing down consumer was in a coast mode, andthrottle wouldn't budge.dealer wanted $300 forrepair. Recall 00v422000/ manufacturer'srecall00s568 didn't apply toconsumer because vehicle had a 5.l engine, andrecall was for a 4.l engine.

When driving at any speed and applying the brakesvehicle will accelerate for a few seconds, and then the vehcile will slowdown and come to a stop.

Accelerator sticks.

Received recall notice 97v0704000. Contacted dealer. The dealership refused to have mechanic do recall repairs on the throttle. Had indicated to owner it was not needed & would not require repair.

The contact owns a 1997 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that he shifted into drive and the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The contact mentioned that he had to shift to neutral in order to stop the vehicle and stated that the failure occurred several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 160,000 and the current mileage was 170,000.

The contact owns a 1997 mercury mountaineer. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact applied the brakes but the vehicle would not stop.the contact was unable to maintain control of the vehicle as it accelerated. The left side of the vehicle began to skid abnormally and the contact crashed into a wire fence. The vehicle then rolled over and crashed into several trees before coming to a stop. The passenger sustained major injuries to the head and bodily trauma. The contact sustained injuries to the head. The contact and passenger were transported to the hospital via ambulance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was unknown.

Applied the brakes and vehicle made a loud noise and had sudden acceleration.

Vehicle was in a park position with emergency brake on, got out of vehicle to check on baby was in car seat in back seat when suddenly vehicle started to accelerate which caused the vehicle to hit a brick wall with baby inside, and injuries to consumer who was trying to stop the run away vehicle. Consumer ran to vehicle, noticed that the baby sustained no injuries. Also noticedvehicle was still in park gear with emergency brake on.

While completely stopped, the engine roared and the vehicle lunged into oncoming traffic hitting another vehicle.the dealer repaired the damages to the vehicle but was not able to determine the cause of the problem.please provide any additional information.

Throttlelinkages and controlstuck due to the cold weather conditions in this area of chicago, causing the vehicle to idle while not moving. There is a recall, but the state of illionis is not included. Dealer has been contacted.

Accelerator pedal is to close to the brake pedal. Three different drivers of my vechicle have accidently hit the accelerator while braking. This has caused one accident with 0 property damage however the other driver is claiming $12,000 in injuries.

Throtle sticks in the closed position.similar to nhtsa recall number 00v422.when throttle closed, sticks, causing the vehicle to jump.came close to hitting car in front.dealer refused to replace at dealers expense.

The gasand brake pedals are so close together that when brakes are applied in an panic stop driver steps on the accelerator also. The dealer has not been notified.

Accelerator too close to brake pedal, vehicle speeds up when applying brake in a panic situation, results in accident.

When applying accelerator pedal from a stop, pedal sticks and you have to hit pedal to get it to move.the longer the vehicle is driven the worse the problem appears to be.(temperature related?)this is a very dangerous scenario, especially when on slick road conditions.the mechanic at the dealership tells me the problem is with the throttle body and linkage, and entire throttle body assembly must be replaced at an expense of over $300. This problem seems to pretty much parallel the problem w/ the 4.0l sohc engines that are a part of nhtsa campaign id # 00v422000 recall.and yet there is no recall for this problem on the 5.0l engine.i don't get it!.

While traveling engine will hesitate or stop momentarily when vehicle is slowing or starting to accelerate.mercury knows of the problem, but doesn't know how to fix it..et

While driving the accelerator sticks, and when stepping on the brake the accelerator sticks.incident happened two times when car just took off.dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

While drivingaccelerator pedal will stick and have to be forced up.this defect occurs at random times. However, occurs more frequently during colder weather.consumer has not taken vehicle to a dealership/mechanic to have it looked at.

Accelerator pedal is too close to brake pedal. This causes sudden acceleration when applyingbrake pedal because both pedals are being applied.appointment for dealer has been made.

While driving50 mph the consumer felt something under h is foot snap.the consumer lost speed, pulled over to the side of the road, to discover the bolt holding the accelerator pedal had fallen off. The consumer was able to drive the vehicle in order to have the repair done.*tc

Gas pedal keeps sticking, and it is too hard to stopvehicle due tobrake failure.

Distance betweengas and brake pedal is only an inch and half. This caused two major accidents, and 2 minor crashes.please provide further information.

After driving for about 17 miles consumer parkedvehicle to unload it. Then restarted it to take it intogarage.at about 5 mphacceleratorstuck, causingvehicle to run intodeep freezer and demolishing it.

Accelerator too close to brake pedal, vehicle speeds up when applying brake in a panic situation, results in an accident.

On three occasions when applying brakes , thethrottle stuck, causing vehicle to increase speed.

While driving 55mphvehicle would decelerate, causing car to go into a skid.

Cruise control works at times and sometime does not work.

Throttle sticks while in cruise control.vehicle was taken to the dealer , who fixed the ieg valve. Vehicle is still experiencing the same problem.

Dt: 1997 mercury mountaineer.i the consumer bought the car used, and when using the cruise control for the first time it would not disengage.it wasat 70 mph and it accelerated to 85 mph. To stop vehicle had to putit into neutral and turn the key off.then vehicle coasted untilit wouldstop. Also had to pump the brakes many times to stop.there was no crash. Had the car looked at by a mechanic.

When brakes appliedthe vehicle suddenly accelerated, causing the vehicle to collide with another .owner states that in order to stop the vehicle, she had to stand on the brakes. Had to put the vehiclein park to stop the engine from racing. The dealer hasthe vehicle .

While backing out of a parking space the vehicle accelerated suddenly.the dealerandmanufacturer have been notified.

While pulling into driveway with foot on brakes, engine started roaring/racing andsuddenly accelerated, rear ending another vehicle. Air bags did not deploy.

While driving, headlights will come off and on by themselves this has happened at night and was very dangerous.dealer could not duplicate. Customer adds heat blows cold air.dealer found blend door motor and blend door to be faulty.

Blend air door square drive broken causing severe discomfort in summer and improper defroster operation during adverse weather conditions. Master techs in area indicate problem occures with excess frequency on various model and years of ford trucks. They further indicate the failure rate is extremely excessive compared to all other makes and models.

Temperature control switch may be defective.no matter what consumer puts temperature on air comes out hot.

The plastic air blend door, which is inside the heater air plenum, broke when the vehicle was just outside of warranty.two differenet dealers quoted me $700-$800 to make the repair since it involves removing the dash.i cannot bring myself to pay that much money just to have heat in the car, but it is a safety hazard in winter weather since i cannot keep the windshield defrosted.

The hot/cold adjustment on the heater of my 1997 mercury mountaineer is inoperative, which makes it difficult to drive when the windshield is fogged, since the defogger blows only cold air. The problem, apparently strikes all 95-99 explorer/mountaineers eventually, due to poor design of the heat blend door. The estimate from the dealer, who has done many, was over $200 for the redesigned part, and over $800 labor to install.

After van was driven for about 5 miles and parked the rear windows exploded. No one was injured because no one was in van.

Rear window glass broke out, owner can not replace it becaused it's unavailable.

Power windows work when keys are not in ignition.

Consumer stated the windshield wipers will intermittently work, none of the speeds except highest speed will work, contacted dealer and they are not willing to do anything, the highest speed has failed with out warning, making operators view impossible.*jg

Potential safety hazardmercury mountaineer 1997 i view windshield wiper failure as a serious problem.i know for a fact that ford has replaced a particular part 4 times due to part failure.i have all of these part numbers if needed but it don't want to take the time to type them in here if not wanted.every time i go to have this problem fixed it cost over $100 in labor alone. Please look into this matter.when it is raining etc. And your wipers fail it is no "piece of cake"!!!
