Car has been rock solid reliable up until 3 weeks ago.driving normally on city streets the car abruptly shut down the hybrid and ice propulsion units.steering froze up and it was like putting the brakes onit stranded me in the middle of traffic causing delays for other drivers and a dangerous obstruction.the car has no limp mode to allow for safely getting out of traffic.it had to be towed.ford dealer has had car for 3 weeks and are still uncertain as to what caused the unsafe shutdown.

The engine abruptly stopped while i was traveling 65 mph.the car was towed to a ford dealer who diagnosed the problem as the "motor electronics cooling pump."the part was replaced but was not covered by the warranty.ford issued a technical service bulletin in november 2008 concerning this problem, soford has been aware of this danger for years.

The car shuts off without warning on the highway at speed causing fear, danger and a potential for disaster.still doing this most recent incident was june 25, 2014.ford refuses to do anything about this recurring problem i have, as do may other owners of ford hybrid vehicles.

We bought vehicle in jan, 2018 from a private party, as a work vehicle for my husband, who is a usps rural route carrier. Two weeks after purchase, the anti-lock brake light went on, and the car would not stop when it was supposed to, which was very dangerous in winter. We believe the prior owner knew about this. The light would just go on & off with no pattern. About 1 1/2 months later, he was driving on a2 lane hgwy (55 mph) delivering mail. He went to pull forward but the car made a brief noise and then everything just stopped working. The car wouldn't start, no electrical or lights, he could not even roll the vehicle by himself to a safe place w/outhelp. The electrical and propulsion simply stopped working; period. We ended up dragging it home. Dealership gave est. Amt of repairs around $18k. I found the recall in 2014 (14s19) for the same thing. The mec pump was replaced in 2014, with a "supplemental" fix in 2015 same issue. This is the exact same issue as the previous recall, which neither mercury or any dealership wants to honor. I'm guessing there are more hybrid mariners w/ similar issues, but not enough to issue a follow-up recall. So here we are stuck in car repair purgatory. I do believe they should honor the recall now and fix the pump and replace the hybrid battery. Not sure about the brakes, but i have seen a lot of complaints about them as well - again, not enough for a recall, which again. Purgatory. My husband was very lucky. Had it been a diff time of day there would have been much more car & semi-truck traffic on the hwy (speed limit is 55) and with him literally just stopped dead in his tracks, there surely would have an imminent risk of a serious rear-end collison, with potentially deadly injuries. I am looking for help, assistance, guidance and anything else from any source possible to resolve this issue. We are at our witts end!!

I was traveling west at about 70 mph in the left lane on i-66 out of washington, dc with four people in the car. Suddenly, the engine died and we were left with only the electric motor on the hybrid and a dash warning of a red triangle and the statement "stop safely soon." the car quickly lost power to about 30 mph and we struggled to get across the four lanes to the shoulder. The electronics in the car still operated (radio, dash lights, etc.), but the gas engine stalled. Once on the shoulder, we stopped.the ford owner's manual told us to turn the car off and try to re-start. We did this and the car re-started.we started to drive, but the car did the same thing after about 5 minutes. The car did the same thing on about 5 different occasions until we could get to an exit that had businesses. The ford dealer in this area (away from my home) states that the electronic cooling pump needs to be replaced. Although i understand that parts fail, my complaint is that ford should not tell owners to re-start the car and try to proceed on. It is dangerous when it continues to fail and you don't know where the next failure might occur (on a bridge, in a construction zone, on a busy, fast interstate). Moreover, having reviewed complaints on this site and elsewhere on the internet about ford hybrids, i know that many others have experience this situation where the car engine stalls at highway speeds due to various problems (e.g., the electronic cooling pump, bad sensors, or a corrupted pcm).

Just after starting my car and driving down my street at ~5mph, there was a warning symbol (red triangle) and then message saying "stop safely now." the vehicle then lost power steering, and power to the engine. I restarted the car and made it ~100ft and the same thing happened again. This also happened several times previously on the highway traveling ~65mph and with the same message "stop safely now" message appeared and immediately lost all power to steering and the engine. I went to the ford dealership and was told to replace the hybrid coolant pump and blend doors and this fixed the problem for several months until today. I had also just taken the vehicle into the dealership for a recall on the power steering. This loss of power and ability to steer is extremely dangerous! this needs to be recalled!

Experienced the second of two in-traffic drive-train shut-downs as dangerous as the g.m. Ignition switch malfunctions (see odi#: 10683675) our initial stopping place - in a "reverse gore-point" between the n/b freeway lanes of the i-405 freeway in santa ana, ca and an outside transition road was unsafe in the full-darkness of a non-illuminated high-speed intersection; with traffic zooming by on both sides, with the flashers still active, i res-started the engine -- all dash warnings cycled on then off normally;on a distinct up-grade, i revv'd the engine against the service brakes, and watched for a suitable gap in traffic over-taking us on our right side. Seeing such a gap, i released the service brakes and accelerated to 30 mph towards the outer shoulder...but only made it part-way across the 2 lanes when the second shut-down occurred...the same "check engine" light...the same squealing enunciator tone... The same worthless "stop safely now" message and again, thanks to courteous and alert over-taking drivers,i was able to coast to a relatively broad shoulder section beside a `disappearing' right travel lane. It was now 7:55pm. We were on our cell phone to the aaa when a highway patrol officer stopped behind us to check our situation, and provide additional protection until a tow-truck could arrive on-scene.this is the second of our family's fomoco hybrids to experience such in-use drive-train shut-downs that provide the driver with no usable warnings of impending doom - not even "limp-away power" ... The "after-it's-too-late" message-panel might as well display "kiss your a$$ goodbye". The idiot fomoco engineers who decided to "protect" the hybrid battery by "stalling" the vehicle on the freeway obviously never considered what a freeway-speed rear-end impact would do to their precious battery...or to the "replaceable" living occupants of the vehicle.

While traveling down the interstate at approximately 70 mph on a friday evening a red triangle shaped warning light came on saying "stop safely now", as the light came on the vehicle started loosing power going slower and slower, eventually slowing to 20 or 30 miles an hour, there was no safe place to pull over off the interstate. This was not safe at all. After pulling over, then pressing system reset buttons, turning off the vehicle and waiting a few minutes then restarting the vehicle it ran fine for the rest of the day and the following day. Then on sunday (a day and a half later) i was traveling down the interstate and it did the same thing, the light came on and i lost power. I repeated what i did the previous time, but it did it again while on the interstate, it did it several times. When i got back on the interstate the last time i kept my speed around 60 mph and was able to make it home. This is not the first time the vehicle did this the same thing occurred about 6 months ago several times on the interstate. I assumed what ever the problem was it was it worked itself out because it had been so long since it occurred. I do not know what the source of the problem is and from what i have read i am leery of bringing it in for repair because ford doesn't even seem to know the source of the problem from everything i have read, and the owner ends up paying a lot of money for repairs that may or may not be the source of the problem.

Second unwarned total shut-down of all power on roadway - this one just 17 days after repairs and reprogramming by ford dealership following first instance, which cut gas engine and electric motor power while traveling on los angeles freeway. This power shut-down occurred while trying to pull from parallel park spot onto busy blvd - lost all power 2 feet into traffic, able to roll back into curb before traffic reached me around semi-blind curve.after the first in-use failure on 5-17-10, i simultaneously reported the malfunction to ford customer relations (case# 1432331380), and presented the vehicle for repair to cerritos [the following quotes from text of service record]; tech performed `eec test, revealing fault-codes: b1239, p1a0c and p0562. The tech also "found tsb (tech service bulletin) 07-25-12 with concern resolution" & he "contact[ed] ford technical service hotline with concern."the tech "replaced the auxiliary airflow mode door actuator and reprogrammed the traction battery control module to latest calibration 8m64-10b687-ag. Final eec test passed." i was also informed that the part number for the replacement `airflow mode door actuator' differed from original, so the component has apparently been re-designed - but neither my wife nor i have received warnings from ford that updates/repairs were recommended on either of our 2008 mariner hybrids. This originally smelled like a `silent recall' to me...but this doesn't even rate as a `recall', because the work performed did not prevent the second occurrence of the equivalent malfunction just 17 days later.this is a totally unacceptable failure mode for any consumer transportation vehicle, because it occurs without warning, and leaves the driver completely defenseless, and with severely-reduced response options.

Vehicle's gas engine shut off on the freeway at 65 mph without warning leaving only the electric motor to power it.the reduced the maximum speed to 25 mph.dealer said failure of the motor electronics cooling pump caused the loss of power.

Around oct 2009. My sensor went bad and had to be replaced then again in october 2010 or 2011 with around 60000 miles going down i-75 around 70 miles an hour a red triangle came on telling me to pull over safely now. I need a mecs pump something about a pump to cool the battery after again another costly bill on my way to work this spring the red triangle came on again. This time instead of taking this car to the dealership i tookit to my mechanic it saved me around$100.00 on the replacement of the cooling pump. I was driving in construction august 22, 2013 and the red light came on again telling me to pull over safely i did have my air on and i was stuck in traffic so i pulled over. In the heat i have not had my air on again and it has not happened in the last couple of days but i do not trust my car and i now need to go to my mechanic and have it checked out. .

Experienced two in-traffic drive-train shut-downs as dangerous as the g.m. Ignition switch malfunctions... Traveling in 60mph-70mph night-time valentine's night freeway traffic on the i-405 in santa ana, ca. In the #3 lane of 5 lanes, the check engine warning light suddenly flashed on - accompanied by the `screech' of the `check gauges' tone - and the drive-train lost all power -- along with the absolutely worthless text "stop safely now". With no power steering, and limited brake booster reserves, i activated the hazard flashers - and thanks to alert and courteous traffic, was able to stop in a "reverse gore-point" between the freeway lanes and an outside transition road. Things could have come out far-worse if overtaking drivers had been inattentive - or we had to cross the path of a big-rig with limited braking- or steering capabilities.as an accident reconstructionist, this is unacceptable.this is the second of our family's fomoco hybrids to experience such in-use drive-train shut-downs that provide the driver with no usable warnings of impending doom - not even "limp-away power" ...

On-freeway gas engine/electric motor shut-down. Driving in morning rush-hour traffic approximately 15 minutes after cold start in 60-degree weather, both the gasoline engine and the electric motor propulsion systems shut-down together without prior warning while the vehicle was in motion - "stop safely now" was the `too-little-too-late' info on the instrument panel. Neither power mode would restart with trans in neutral (i refused to try cycling ignition key to off, and risk steering lock). Fortunate to coast onto shoulder, where i had to move gear selector to park, turn ignition key full-off and then back to start, at which time normal operation resumed.total loss of both power sources while in-use on a freeway ' and unable to re-activate without shifting transmission into park is absolutely inexcusable and unacceptable!

This would be the second un-warned total loss of power on a freeway.having coasted out of traffic on the first unwarned engine / propulsion system shut-down in fast-moving freeway traffic, managed to find wide-enough section of outside shoulder to come to a stop. But being stuck in 10pm darkness on a narrow shoulder was too dangerous to consider remaining there.once stopped, i shifted the transmission to park, cycled ignition off then to start ? engine restarted, dash warning lamps came on- then cycled off normally, engine ran smoothly. Note: the only way to attempt to restart the hybrid drivetrain is to shift the transmission into park .. It doesn't work in neutral .. And there was no way i was going to try to put the trans in park in 72-75 mph freeway traffic in 10pm darkness.accelerated moderately into merging lane, entering gap in n/b traffic to re-enter i-5 traffic ? hoping to get past sr-2 to more-familiar exit ? within 2 minutes, and at speed ~ 55 mph ? drive train died again (same warning tone and light...and same "too little too late" stop now warning text). Again had to hunt for a wide-enough section of outside shoulder to stop and take stock of dangerous situation. Shut off engine, moved trans into park tried restart - again, engine started and settled to normal operation - no warning lights remained on. Able to re-enter traffic and transition off i-5 fwy .. But only escape was to another freeway (sr-2).kept speed below 45mph on that freeway until able to exit freeway.this was the second un-warned total loss of power on a freeway.

Quits running while caution with explanation in middle light appears and wrench light appears. Then notification to stop at once safely. This has happened on freeway. After 15-20 minutes car will crank again but may only go a few feet and stall again, near death experience.

2008 mercury mariner hybrid was going 20mph on electric motor in traffic when triangle warning light came on and the stop safely now sign displayed.the vehicle gas engine did not come on and i had to pull over to the side.i place the car in park and turn off the engine.i restarted the engine and the warning light disappeared.i took it to the ford dealership and they ran a diagnostic on it.they indicated it was the throttle body on the car that needs to be clean or replaced, and the pcm needs to be reprogrammed. I replaced it.this is after i took it to the ford dealership to fix the two recalls for this vehicle - electric steering control and electric coolant pump for the hybrid battery.i don't know if this will fixed the stalling issue since other vehicle owners indicated this problem persists, only time will tell.if this is a persistent problem please issue a recall since losing propulsion in traffic is not safe.

When decelerating down hill the brakes became seemed to have no power to stop the car and required extreme force to stop the car. Afterwards the electronic motor disengaged from the engine and the automobile runs on combustion engine only without the hybrid electric motor assist.

Stop safely now chimes and displayed on dash followed by no acceleration until vehicle stalls and stops.starts right back up but continues to happen especially in la rush hour traffic. Very dangerous! had recall work done on the mecs 3yrs ago but problem has continued. This happens while in motion on the 110 freeway in downtown los angleles, ca.could be the electric throttle body or rear actuator. Or any other component that works with the electric motor and battery.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact was driving 10 mph when the abs and brake warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the electrical hydraulic braking system failed. The dealer informed him that there were no recalls for the failure. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 58,034.updated 05/05/11*ljthe dealer infoemed the consumer the electronic control unit was bad. Updated 08/18/11

This would be the third total engine power shut-down at freeway speeds with no limp-away optionafter exiting the freeway, realized that we were in an unsafe neighborhood [so not a good option to stop and call for tow], tried mapping surface street route to safer area, but nav system showed the only surface street route to take us back home put us on a steep, narrow winding section of laurel canyon - no safe exit if another shut-down. Also realized we couldn't use riverside thru griffith park which is locked after dark .. So zig-zagged north and west about 5 miles below 40 mph keeping to lighted streets hoping for safe place or unremembered route. Engine remained stable once more, drove towards i-5 again on los feliz (past the griffin bar ' and a topless club) .. Remembered los feliz ahead had a long, separate entrance ramp to n/b i-5 . The drivetrain accelerated smoothly to ~50 mph, then warnings / drive train died again at the bottom of the on-ramp .. Hazards ' again.. But with less momentum, harder to find a wide-enough spot on the n/b outer shoulder across from s/end griffith park golf course. When minimal spot found stopped / parked /shut down and restarted again, engine started and idled smoothly, no warning lights remained on. Now about 10:15pm. With hazards on, rolled below fwy speeds along shoulder until it ran out just as adequate opening appeared in outside lane.accelerated cautiously to below 50 mph, limped off at odd freeway appendix which leads east - merged right onto san fernando, turned left (north) at next signal and started working way about 12 miles back west on surface streets from the moorpark area never exceeding 45 mph.no additional drivetrain issues before we reached studio city home ~ 11:10pm. This was the third total engine power shut-down at freeway speeds with no `limp away' option.

While my wife was driving our 2008 mercury hybrid mariner on a highway at a speed of approximately 45 mph, a warning light appeared on the dash (red triangle with and exclamation point) and the vehicle began slowing down in a manner that prevented her from controlling the speed of the vehicle.my wife, fortunately, was able to pull to the side of the highway without incident.the ford dealership's diagnostic test revealed a faulty electronic throttle body and the dealership recommended immediate replacement for safety reasons.i understand that as a result of similar issues with ford escape and mercury mariner models, through a customer satisfaction program, ford voluntarily has extended warranty work for some escape and mariner vehicles.the vin for our 2008 mercury hybrid mariner, however, was not included in this program.i spoke with a representative and with a supervisor from ford customer service (800-392-3673), and the supervisor reported that ford is not in a position to address the issue with respect to my vehicle, because there is not enough data to include my vehicle within the voluntary customer satisfaction program.

The power torque sensor for the power steering was already recalled and had the system updated before i got the car in 2014. The cars steering wheel starts shaking a little then all of a suddle the steering wheel locks up and the power steering stops working, so you can't hardly turn it. I came inches from getting in a wreck. You can update the system but it will only work for about 1 or 2 years.

Pcm, "stop safely now" & shut-down problem and i have a red triangle illuminated on the cluster accompanied by an audible chime. In addition, the message center will indicate "stop safely now" and the powertrain control module will command the vehicle to shut down.this is where ever you are and it happens really quickly it is for sure a safety hazard.... I don't understand why this has not been recalled, since so many have reported the same problems throughout the years.

I have abs, brake warning and regen brakes disabled messages on dash. Ford mechanic estimated cost over 5k.

Vehicle was in middle lane of interstate 95 with traffic moving at 65-70 mph when there was (according to ford tech) a failure of the motor electronics cooling pump. This caused the vehicle engine to shut down and could have caused accident/death if wife wasn't able to get to shoulder weaving through lanes of traffic. I see online at http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2008/mercury/mariner_hybrid/engine_and_engine_cooling/problem.aspx that this has been reported as a major complaint for awhile. Why is this not a recall? someone will sure get killed. Our car has only 57k miles.

Had the throttle body fixed once two months ago because i was going 45, my suv. Hazard light came on and it said to slow down and pull over safely. Then it has happened three more times since i got it fixed, my suv is in the shop again, i paid 845 last time and i still have $15,000 left to pay on my car. I can't afford to keep paying to get this fixed, let alone the safety issue.the lady two times it happened i had my baby in the car on the freeway and i was in the middle lane and it was raining... It was frightening.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled. The failure had recurred previously. The vehicle was restarted and operated as designed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the water pump would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 62,311.

At 70 mph on freeway, "stop when safe" message came up, engine stopped, had to coast to a stop on shoulder.lucky it was 1am so not much traffic.restarted vehicle, made another 5 miles, happened again.restarted, made it off freeway, able to get home, keeping under 40mph (assumption was some sort of overheating problem with hybrid systems).currently in dealership for repair, my internet research indicates there are quite a few others having this issue.very frightening and dangerous to lose power at freeway speeds and have to make way to the shoulder and stop.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact indicated that after the incident the high temperature sensor light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The failure mileage was 41,000. Updated 08/27/14*ljthe consumer stated the coolant pump was the cause of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. Updated 09/5/2014

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled on several separate occasions without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to duplicate the problem. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

The car shuts off without warning on the highway at speed causing fear, danger and a potential for disaster.still doing this most recent incident was june 25, 2014.ford refuses to do anything about this recurring problem i have, as do may other owners of ford hybrid vehicles.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving 72 mph, the warning image of a red exclamation point inside a triangle illuminated and the engine stalled. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road. The contact turned off and restarted the engine and, after a few minutes, the vehicle returned to normal. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted at 866-436-7332 and stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The failure mileage was unknown.

Engine shuts off and display says to pull off road.this has been a on going problem. The dealer replaced the throttle body and it still happens. It is very unsafe to lose your vehicle's acceleration and have the engine turn off. I think it may be a computer code glitch because based on what i was told by the dealer the engine shuts off because a fuel mixture issue detect that may even be a false reading. This automated action within the vehicle brain decision puts many at risk as i found out when i was in the furthest left lane about a mile before the 55 freeway turn off while traveling south on the 91 freeway with the car shut off it's engine. I lost power and needed to pull over while a car behind me was flashing their headlights and the car to my right was slowly passing me up. Next came a bigger challenge since there were 2 big rigs on the road and i hit the brakes a little while signalling a lane change with my flashers on i managed to squeeze between the two rigs and almost caused the one behind me to rear end me. The big rig in turn caused the car behind to break and this almost lead to a pile up. That intersection on the freeway where the 55 freeway begins on your left lanes and the 91 freeways continues on the right is a very dangerous place to have to negotiate a pull over. It is compounded with a entry ramp with cars trying to quickly get into the left 2 lanes in order to get onto the 55 freeway.i do not see a reason to have your vehicle turn itself of for any reason other than a fire or a very serious safely issue. Based on what i know the computer of my vehicle puts people in danger over a possible issue with the smog pollution being too excessive for the moment.

While traveling highway at approximately 70mi/hr. The vehicle stalled and "stop vehicle safely" light came on.i needed to pull over turn car off wait and restart engine. This happened again about 25 miles down the highway.after the second incident it did not happen until my return trip the next day repeating the same as above.this did happen to me once before about a yr ago.

On the freeway with cruise control on at 70 mph in the fast lane the motor unexpectedly stops and the "pull over safely light" came on. Thiscaused a very dangerous situation causing me to move over four lanes to the shoulder of the road. After the vehicle was completely stopped and put in park the motor restarted.over the last three months this has happened three times.

Driving in fast lane of freeway when "stop safely now" message with red alert came on.the engine stopped running.no warning, no ability to drive to the side of the road.this is a known fault in this vehicle.i cannot conceive of a problem that would require the engine to stop immediately.it is just luck that we got to the side of the road without incident as there was a lot of traffic, and without power, it was just plain luck that we managed to get to the side of the road.doing internet research: this is a known fault, but without a solution or a fix.what ever the problem, it seems ridiculous that ford has a major problem like this that has the engine simply stop. We got to the side of the road.i simply turned off the ignition and re-started the engine, without further problem.there must be some way to at least have some warning time, or a means of propulsion sufficient to get safely to the roadside.even five minutes worth of power would be sufficient.

While driving the vehicle shuts off with a red triangle and the display says to pull off safely.this has happened about 6 times already. I have taken it back to the ford dealer and they replaced the throttle body because there is a sensor that fails in the unit and they explained the factory calibrates the whole unit with a steep price tag. Lucky i still have 5000 miles till warranty expires.i guess a number of times it was not a big deal to pull over on the shoulder and restart the vehicle and carry on. This last time we had service done to the vehicle i informed the ford service agent that we were going on a long trip and if we should get a rental. He was confident the work they performed would resolve the shut down issue. We left la and went on our way to bishop for a group hiking trip. The mariner ran fine for 3/4 of the way and again while driving on a 2 lane road the mariner shuts off. I negotiated to the right as my speed was declining and a 18 wheeler was passing me up on the right and the car behind me was gaining on my rear. It was a bit scary but we managed to pull over safely. Upon turning off the mariner ignition and restarting we carried on to the destination. It was raining and a road conditions were not the best but we did not want to be stranded on the side of the road. Once again after driving for 10 minutes the mariner shut off and with the loss of power. Not a safe situation to have your engine shut off while driving in a freeway at speed of 65 and to suddenly loss your engine with no ability to accelerate out of a unsafe situation. It could be very dangerous if we were traveling on a windy single lane road without a shoulder as there are a bunch in the higher elevations where we hike. It would not be safe to stop and deal with this situation as cars are coming up a hill and your trying to reset the ignition computer system.

At ~ 10:10pm traveling at 68-70 mph in fast, moderate freeway traffic in the #3 n/b lane of i-5 in silverlake area, ~ -mi south of the interchange with the sr-2 freeway (~ @ riverside dr. Over-crossing) . Suddenly / with no warming, engine lost all power & shut down and i heard a `screeching'warning tone, saw the red triangle of doom warning symbol appear in the upper/right of the instrument panel, the tachometer dropped to `zero'? and the `too-little-too-late' warning text stop now? text appeared at the bottom of the instrument panel (how was i supposed to do this in the middle of a fast-moving freeway?). Only thing that saves us was that we had significant speed to coast out of traffic - other drivers thankfully gave-way to let us do so. First of three such complete losses of power in traffic, attempting to reach safety.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving approximately 70 mph, the engine stalled and the hybrid warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle operated normally once it was turned off and restarted. The failure occurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

Stalling, total loss of power on freeway, or making a city turn, or accelerating from a stop sign or light, or going up even a slight incline, such as a driveway to a house.only in the summer.do not dare use air conditioning, which makes it occur quicker and much more often.95 degrees outside, 113 degrees in car - cannot and do not use air conditioner, but still happens on trip over 15 minutes long.totally unsafe.like other contributors, i would like to know why there has been no recall. Just today, july 10, 2013, 18-wheeler behind me (close) on 45 mph city street, and i stalled.i stuck my left hand out of my window in a "please stop" gesture, and driver did stop, but i was terrified.must come to full stop, put car in park to re-start it.but same thing will happen at next light or sign or change of speed, whether in 5 minutes or 30 seconds, city street or freeway. At this point, i would say this has happened approximately 250 times.yes, that is not a typo.no question ford knows about this.

A "stop safely now" warning message came on when i was driving on the freeway at 60 miles per hour.the car immediately lost power and became difficult to steer.i pulled over to the right shoulder as safely and quickly as possible.this has occurred multiple times.

While traveling on an interstate highway, car lost power, speed declined to 25 mph and went into hybrid mode. "pull over safely" light went on. We pulled over and turned off engine. After a few minutes it restarted and we were able to drive the car at normal speed. The outside temperature was high--in the 90s--and the air conditioning was on high when the power failed. We had a similar incident about a month earlier while trying to park the car on a hot day with air conditioning on..speed was minimal because we were parkingbut car lost power and pull over safely light went on. After second incident we took car to a ford dealer who said the hybrid system cooling pump had failed and needed to be replaced. Cost to replace the pump was $470.

Traveling down the interstate, left lane @ 70 mph.i had 1 vehicle behind me and a semi truck / trailer to the right and one behind him.without warning the engine died and i began coasting in traffic.i hit my flashers and thankfully the vehicle behind me was alert and noticed my instant loss of speed and flashers.they slowed long enough for both big trucks to pass on my right and for me to get over to the shoulder on i-70.quick research turns up possible issues with a mechanical / electrical pump or maybe the throttle body.i called the ford dealership and talked to the service manager who didn't have a clue what would cause the issue and was surprised that i found several postings on the internet where people had the same issue in the same model vehicle.i visited the ford dealership and spoke with the parts department (2 individuals) who couldn't decide which was the correct part number for the mechanical / electrical pump. It is just a matter of time before someone experiences this issue and can't get out of traffic and is involved in a serious or fatal accident as a result.it is a known issue and i also noticed there is a class action lawsuit filing because so many have experienced this same issue.i'd be interested to know what criteria needs to be met before the nhtsa takes action against ford / mercury.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle loss motive power and stalled with an unknown warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to andy mohr ford located at 2713 e. Main st, plainfield, in 46168 however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.

My 2008 mercury mariner hybrid has a dangerous high speed stall condition.it is very serious and puts the vehicle and occupants in a situation that causes a very high risk of a crash.this said, my vehicle is not covered in the current recall?why not?

This has occurred twice.the first time, (9-6-2010),driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the freeway- the light, "stop safely now" comes on and you cannot use the gas pedal and you have to try to get to the shoulder safely as the car has no power.i waited for half an hour and restarted the car and was able to get to where i had to go.took it to dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with it.the 2nd occurrence (march 31, 2012), same thing happened except i was on the freeway with everyone going at least 65 miles per hour and had to get to the shoulder without any power.took it to dealer and they said it was a coolant pump problem.i went online and there are hundreds of complaints about this problem.this should be a recall issue and i shouldn't have had to pay for this.extremely dangerous.could so easily have been hit by oncoming traffic.scary experiences.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the stop safely now warning light and the temperature light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle then suddenly stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The failure occurred intermittently and only when driving at highway speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The technicians stated that there may be a failure with the cooling pump, but would inspect the vehicle to verify the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving approximately 70 mph the vehicle stalled and a stop safely now message displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was pulled over, turned off and upon restart the contact was able to continue driving normally. The failure continued to recur during the duration of the drive. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to have the failure diagnosed. The failure and current mileages were 68,000.

On thursday, august 11, 2011 our 2008 mercury mariner hybrid shutdown while traveling 67-70mph on i-39 in the passing lane next to a semi.had to cut across the interstate onto loose gravel, creating a dangerous situation for multiple drivers.had just had this 'fixed' by dealership two weeks before.i was told by the dealership at that time that it needed a chip upgrade, which was done.unfortunately, this was not the needed 'fix' obviously.i was able to restart it like i had before, but could not drive above 60-62 mph in order to keep vehicle running.just took it into dealership again today, and they had not heard of this problem on any other hybrids.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving at 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to restart the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the coolant pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v526000 (hybrid propulsion system). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Vehicle's gas engine shut off on the freeway at 65 mph without warning leaving only the electric motor to power it.the reduced the maximum speed to 25 mph.dealer said failure of the motor electronics cooling pump caused the loss of power.

We purchased a ford certified 2008 mercury mariner hybrid less than two years ago.according to ford, a ford certified' vehicle has been passed a 172 point inspection.we have been driving this vehicle on the highway and have experience a stop safely now' warning on the dash, accompanied by the engine shutting off, and this seems to happen at speeds of 50+ mph.i was driving 70 mph in the middle of a congested 4 lane highway traffic while this happened to me recently.my car ceased to accelerate, and i had to weave out of the center lanes, swerving to an exit, going up on an exit ramp, without the ability to accelerate.we have contacted ford through their website customer service number, and the representatives just tell us to take it to a ford dealership.after fixing the problem that their technician at our local dealership told us to fix, our vehicle did the very same thing a month later.we were told that we needed to replace the fuel throttle body.we've also replaced the hybrid battery filter' as per the company's recommendation.we want some attention brought to this matter.i feel i no longer trust that the technicians at the ford have the knowledge to deal with this issue.after some searches online, i've found we're not the only ones with this problem.i don't know how ford can just pretend this isn't a serious issue.what will it take to get their attention?the fact that they're endangering the lives of people by not recalling this vehicle, and the lack of accountability is shocking. How can ford can get away with releasing these unsafe vehicles and exposing many lives which could result in deaths.after many calls to ford customer service, and speaking with the local ford techs, my frustration lies at not having a clear answer and no direction. This is clearly unsafe for anyone to drive and something needs to be done.

2008 mariner hybrid / 67000miles. Engine failure. Was able to limp off highway. After waiting several minutes car restarted and was able to drive approx. 5 milesbefore it shut off again. Drove to dealer with several shutdowns.dealer states car needs electronic cooling pump and cht sensor at a cost of $1275.00. Car is still sitting in dealership waiting for my decision to repair or not.car was not abused. Mostly only one passenger. Car was serviced regularly as per specs at dealership.

Vehicle shut down while driving on the interstate, immediately losing all power. Message on dash read "stop safely now". This is a very dangerous issue. Driving on the interstate at 65 mph & losing all ability to accelerate or maintain speed is very scary. Making matters worse, this occurred during a pouring rainstorm & in a construction zone. I pulled over and turned off ignition. I was able to restart the vehicle. It then shut down repeatedly every 2 miles. The only way to restart was to pull over and turn off the ignition. I gimped it to the car dealer. Now have a $700 bill to fix the airflow mode door actuator and the motor cooling pump. We were told there was a short that was keeping the cooling pump from working. Thus the engine was overheating and shutting off. Having read similar complaints, i am concerned that this is a common issue with this vehicle.

The idiot fomoco engineers who decided to "protect" the hybrid battery by "stalling" the vehicle on the freeway obviously never considered what a freeway-speed rear-end impact would do to their precious battery...or to the "replaceable" living occupants of the vehicle.

Returning from florida to georgia and passed a vehicle at about 70mph and released the accelerator but vehicle kept accelerating.i pressed the brake pedal but vehicle kept accelerating.i pressed the accelerator again and vehicle finally stopped accelerating.additionally, "stop safely now" message intermittently occurs at highway speeds and around town in traffic and slows the vehicle to perhaps 10-15mph and tells me to pull over.this has happened randomly at unspecific times and in heavy traffic which could be dangerous.i have concerns that this issue needs to be a recall from ford since a lot of people are having the issue from forums online and it could result in wrecks and maybe even fatalities.

My 2008 mercury mariner hybrid has a dangerous high speed stall condition.it is very serious and puts the vehicle and occupants in a situation that causes a very high risk of a crash.this said, my vehicle is not covered in the current recall?why not?

Car has been rock solid reliable up until 3 weeks ago.driving normally on city streets the car abruptly shut down the hybrid and ice propulsion units.steering froze up and it was like putting the brakes onit stranded me in the middle of traffic causing delays for other drivers and a dangerous obstruction.the car has no limp mode to allow for safely getting out of traffic.it had to be towed.ford dealer has had car for 3 weeks and are still uncertain as to what caused the unsafe shutdown.

At ~ 10:10pm traveling at 68-70 mph in fast, moderate freeway traffic in the #3 n/b lane of i-5 in silverlake area, ~ -mi south of the interchange with the sr-2 freeway (~ @ riverside dr. Over-crossing) . Suddenly / with no warming, engine lost all power & shut down and i heard a `screeching'warning tone, saw the red triangle of doom warning symbol appear in the upper/right of the instrument panel, the tachometer dropped to `zero'' and the `too-little-too-late' warning text stop now' text appeared at the bottom of the instrument panel (how was i supposed to do this with no power?). Only thing that saves us was that we had significant speed to coast out of traffic - other drivers thankfully gave-way to let us do so. First of three such complete losses of power in traffic, attempting to reach safety.

While traveling on the open hwy @ 75mph, i suddenly got "pull over safely now" message on theinfo center of the dash and a redtriangle alert on the right side of the dash.i pulled over immediately.stopped the car, turned off the ignition and waited a moment.i then started the car, allseemed fine (no message) and proceeded.a short time later, the exact same thing happened again.i pulled off the hwy and repeated the steps above.the car was riding well and smoothly with noapparent problems.but, the longer i drove, the more frequently the problem occurred.i was only able todrive for a few minutes before the dash board warning would reappear.i pulled into the nearest ford dealership to get the problem resolved. I have been told it is the throttle body and am currently waiting for the problem to be resolved.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that the stop safety now warning message illuminated and an unknown warning light illuminated. The contact mentioned that when the defroster was activated, the warning lights no longer illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v526000 (hybrid propulsion system). The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The dealer was unable to confirm when the parts would become available to schedule the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that while parked, the ignition switch did not move from the off to on position without warning. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the coolant pump needed to be updated and repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v526000 (hybrid propulsion system). The approximate failure mileage was 199,000. The vin was not available.

While driving on the freeway the gas engine to my 2008 mercury mariner hybrid unexpectedly shut down at least 4 times last evening.the control panel displayed a red triangle alter and the phrase "stop safely now".this was a very dangerous situation on a crowded detroit freeway where i had to maneuver over multiple lanes at a slow speed to stop the vehicle on the right shoulder (the only available space).the vehicle restarted each time andthe problem recurred after less than a mile 4 or 5 times and then has not occurred since.i had a similar problem about six months ago where i paid ford to fix the problem, but apparently that didn't happen.this is a very dangerous problem and should be fixed before people end up dead if it hasn't already happened.

As i was driving down the freeway, my mercury mariner hybrid displayed a "stop safely now"sign on the control panel.not even a minute later, the car began to shut down and i had to maneuver get off the freeway.when i parked the car, i sat for a moment and then the car started right up.i drove another few miles and it displayed the same message and then stopped.it started again and then did the same thing again.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. When the contact placed the vehicle in park, it began to roll. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 15v606000 (power train). The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. Updated 11/30/18

A "stop safely now" warning message came on when i was driving on the freeway at 60 miles per hour.the car immediately lost power and became difficult to steer.i pulled over to the right shoulder as safely and quickly as possible.this has occurred multiple times.

This would be the second un-warned total loss of power on a freeway.having coasted out of traffic on the first unwarned engine / propulsion system shut-down in fast-moving freeway traffic, managed to find wide-enough section of outside shoulder to come to a stop. But being stuck in 10pm darkness on a narrow shoulder was too dangerous to consider remaining there.once stopped, i shifted the transmission to park, cycled ignition off then to start engine restarted, dash warning lamps came on- then cycled off normally, engine ran smoothly. Note: the only way to attempt to restart the hybrid drivetrain is to shift the transmission into park .. It doesn't work in neutral .. And there was no way i was going to try to put the trans in park in 72-75 mph freeway traffic in 10pm darkness.accelerated moderately into merging lane, entering gap in n/b traffic to re-enter i-5 traffic hoping to get past sr-2 to more-familiar exit within 2 minutes, and at speed ~ 55 mph drive train died again (same warning tone and light...and same "too little too late" stop now warning text). Again had to hunt for a wide-enough section of outside shoulder to stop and take stock of dangerous situation. Shut off engine, moved trans into park tried restart - again, engine started and settled to normal operation - no warning lights remained on. Able to re-enter traffic and transition off i-5 fwy...but only escape was to another freeway (sr-2).kept speed below 45mph on that freeway until able to exit freeway.this was the second un-warned total loss of power on a freeway.

Driving at 50+ mph on multiple occasions and vehicle gives stop safely now message and suddenly reduces greatly in speed. It randomly has occued and when it has, i had to try to navigate out of 50+mph traffic after the vehicle suddenly reduces speed to about 20 mph to a shoulder or other safe area. Had the coolant pump replaced but still occurs.ford said the twin vehicle the 2008 ford escape hybrid has recalls for the throttle body assembly and blend door actuator for hybrid battery cooling system that have been identified as causing the stop safely now message which because the vehicle suddenly drops from highway speeds to about 20mph could cause serious accidents.since the 08 mariner hybrid is the 08 escape hybrids twin, the throttle body assembly and hybrid battery system blend door actuator should be recalled on the mariner hybrid also and replaces to protect lives by preventing accidents because of the defective parts.

Quits running while caution with explanation in middle light appears and wrench light appears. Then notification to stop at once safely. This has happened on freeway. After 15-20 minutes car will crank again but may only go a few feet and stall again, near death experience.

For the past 3 years i have been dealing with my 2008 mercury mariner hybrid shutting down in the middle of traffic and giving me the pull over immediately warning. I have had to replace the hybrid cooling system door actuator and the electric water pump (mec unit), all within the past year and half. On june 11, 2014 the vehicle shut down again and gave my wife the pull over warning. I took it to the ford dealership this morning and they said that the throttle body now needs to be replaced and they gave me the error code p1a0c. The funny thing is, this is the same error code they gave me when they said the electric water pump (mec unit) had to be replaced. I checked this unit the other day when the car died and it was functioning properly. There is a major issue with the ford hybrid products and ford refuses to fix them. They sold lemons to thousands of hybrid owners who have made complaints and ford just brushes us off. They just keep telling owners to suck it up and pay to replace different parts. Please make ford take care of these vehicles before somone gets killed because they do shut down without warning, has happened to me numerous of times in heavy high speed traffic and it is not a good feeling.

I was driving down the road going 55 mph and all of a sudden my vehicle jerked.i saw a red exclamation point on dash and where the car mileage is located, it said stop safely now.so i pulled over and shut down the vehicle, restarted and it happened again one mile away.it continued doing this. It took over an hour to get 10 miles down the road to my destination.it has been doing this off and on for the past month.i finally took the vehicle to the dealership and they said it is the throttle body.

My vehicle was part of the nationwide recall by ford this summer. As instructed, i went into the dealership and my car was "given the fix". Not 1 later my power steering in my car has completely gone out.it is very difficult and dangerous to drive my car.i brought my car back to the dealership and was told that my car had already been diagnosed and "fixed" under the recall, so there was nothing further they could do.my car is actually doing the thing that the recall warned about and they sent me away.it has been 4 months, i feel like i take my life into my hands when i drive my car and ford takes no responsibly.

I was driving my 2008 mercury mariner hybrid when the stop safely light came on and the car died instantly. I was on the highway driving 55 mph and it was extremely dangerous to have rapid deceleration at that time. I was barely able to pull my car over to the side in a safe manner. I turned off the car, restarted and proceed to get on the highway again. It happened three times. Needless to say, i do not feel safe driving my vehicle anywhere at this point in time.

Abs light came on and brake system failed to stop the vehicle until pressed hard the brake pedal. The abs light comes on and off. Gave the vehicle for diagnostics to mechanic - codes u0418 invalid data from brake control module, codes c1478, c1479, c1480, wheel brake pressure control plausibility, u2023 communication network fault, mechanic gave estimate of $5542.00 to replace abs control assembly. I called ford customer service, they declined to assist at this time. No help provided to put my vehicle back on road. This is a safety issue.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving 35 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to stop the vehicle. The contact pressed brake padel to floor while avoiding collision with other card. Then placed the vehicle into park to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs control module failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that the abs module control the hydraulic system that control braking. Informed tonotify nhtsa of the extreme unsafe braking condition when abs module fails. The failure mileage was approximately 134,129. Ford motor company charge $4,000 for the abs module control. They are gouging the american consumer with excessive pricing who wants to drive safely.

Abs warning light comes on and check brake system message comes on at anytime while driving on sitting still. Lose braking power, causing driver to push brake very hard to stop and brake pedal sometimes goes to the floor and you have to use emergency brake to stop. Dealer couldn't look at the car for three weeks said its okay to drive in "manual mode", however manual mode only uses rear brakes and will take vehicle a long distance to stop in rainy conditions.(i went through a busy intersection in the rain and almost had an accident so left it at the dealer). Dealer had vehicle for almost six weeks, replaced the abs huc twice, finally called ford. Ford advised to replace all brake hoses "due to restrictions". Dealers are telling owners they have to replace abs hcu and part alone cost $4700.00. However, ford knows of the problem and is not putting out a bulletin or recall, until someone gets killed. Owners are trading the unsafe car because the dealer is misdiagnosing the real problem which cost approximately $300.00

Failure of the regenerative braking system due to a defective master cylinder and/or hydraulic control unit ("hcu").very dangerous.there is no recall on this - why?many have had the same problem! see http://blog.yagelski.com/2010/07/ford-hybrid-brake-failure-revisited.html

The abs tone rings on the 2008 model mercury mariner and ford escape are defective in design - they are thin metal, but put under stress by being forced onto the half-shaft (different metal, different expansion rate), and therefore prone to cracking/breaking.when cracked/broken, they cause the abs brake system and regenerative braking to fault out, sometimes intermittently and with no warning.the part itself is cheap (~$10 each), and apparently should be, but the dealer will not sell them separately, and instead requires the owner to replace the half-shaft, with estimates from the dealership and independent mechanics of between $400 and $1000 to replace both front half-shafts.simply making the part thicker, or of the same metal as the half-shaft, would fix the problem - instead, ford forces owners to choose between an unsafe vehicle and robbery, with no guarantee that the problem wouldn't recur within a month of driving (the cracking seems to be more related to temperature than mileage).this should be recalled and ford should be forced to replace these at their own cost - i bet they'd then "discover" a way to prevent recurrence if they were paying out of their own pocket for any that failed before 100,000 miles. A cursory search on the internet will turn up thousands of results for this problem.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that while pulling into a parking lot at 3 mph, she attempted to engage the brakes but they failed to stop the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the abs and the check brake warning lamp illuminated. Also, the contact stated that she had to crash into a tree in order to stop the vehicle. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The current and failure mileage was 104,000.

Heading west on the interstate i took the off ramp and came to a stop.as i was stopping a tone rang out, the abs light, and brake warning light came on.the brakes didn't feel as stiff as they should have but i did come to a stop as i wasn't traveling very fast while approaching the stop sign.i turned left and proceeded over the overpass towards a side road when a car that had come up the off ramp from the eastbound lane rolled the stop sign and stopped with the nose of their vehicle in my lane.i nearly put the brake pedal through the floor and had little to no brakes to stop me.iand made a split second decision to swerve around the car, driving in the oncoming lane as i was able verify there was no oncoming traffic. Once i pulled over on a side road i noticed the display in the dash read "regen brake disabled"i drove slowly to a small car sales lot with an auto shop and they researched for a few minutes and told me i would have to take it to a dealer to replace a hydraulic pump.they were able to fix the issue by disconnecting the battery for a bit but said more than likely the fix wouldn't last.next stop is the ford dealer but from what i've read tonight, many other users have experienced the same issue and have been quoted over half the book value of the vehicle to fix the issue.i was glad not to slam into the passenger door of the lady who pulled out in front of me,i was glad i had a clear lane to avoid her without having a head-on collision but i can see where this issue could happen at the wrong time and place and cause harm or loss of life for those involved.because i had little to no brakes with the pedal pushed all the way to the floor

Hcu module failure at 60,000 miles. This failure is mentioned intsb 05-8-5 & innhtsa id# 10017553this seems to be a recurring problem in many ford escape/ mercury mariner hybrids going back to 2005.my dealer estimated the cost to be almost $6000.this is very disturbing, especially since this vehicle has been well maintained since purchased in 2009. Is ford goinginvestigate this problem? can you do anything to help with the financial burden placed on an owner of one of your vehicles? we have purchased a number of ford products over the years & feel that customer loyalty should be considered. I have lost faith in ford since this has occurred. I have decided to notify you of this situation since this repair cost is out of the question. Thank you for yourconsideration in this matter.

While driving the abs and other warning lights came on indicating brake failure. Driving on highway 60 mph.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving approximately 30 mph, the abs and brake warning indicators illuminated. The brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to roesch ford (333 w grand ave, bensenville, il 60106, (630) 279-6000) where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit failed and needed to be replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit failed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred a third time. The vehicle was not repaired again. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and referred the contact to nhtsa. The approximate failure mileage was 94,000. The vin was not available.

I have abs, brake warning and regen brakes disabled messages on dash. Ford mechanic estimated cost over 5k.

April 2016 the abs light was on along with the message "check brake system and the regen brakes."when breaking the vehicle took much longer than normal to slow and stop.the repair for this was $4100 ($4800 with labor).i was advised that this was a safety issue since the brakes were not working properly and to not drive the vehicle.i chose to have the repair since i need the vehicle for work and still owe money on it.i did some research and it apears that this is a known problem as other complaints on nhtsa and other forums attest to.i contacted ford and asked that i be reimbursed as this is a safety issue.they declined my request.

Upon startup and sometimes when driving the abs warning light will illuminate along with the service brake system and the regenerative brake system shutdown. Causing the brakes to become weak and ineffective.

When braking it takes the vehicle along time to come to a stop while driving dealer says that the hydraulic control unit is bad ( hcu ) they want 4,000 dollars to fix it.

During braking to stop or turn, the brakes engaged and released at low speed then reengaged, causing a lurch.this problem was ongoing but intermittent.upon researching the issue and after separate service visits to two different ford dealers, with my input from online forums, the tone rings on both front brakes were replaced, resolving the problem.these rings were cracked and according to the dealer, this is a common problem and i think these parts are defective.

When decelerating down hill the brakes became seemed to have no power to stop the car and required extreme force to stop the car. Afterwards the electronic motor disengaged from the engine and the automobile runs on combustion engine only without the hybrid electric motor assist.

Abs and emergency brake light came on spontaneously. Braking abnormal and unable to stop vehicle. Braking system not working. Neutral and had to do shoulders to control vehicle and slow down gradually. Very dangerous!

After pressing the brake peddle, the abs light and red brake light come on and the regenerative braking and power brakes fail.it seems to happen only when the outdoor temperature is over 90 degrees.once it happens, braking requires a hard push of the brake peddle to the floor and stopping takes longer.it is indeed dangerous.my research shows that this is a common and dangerous problem.thanks for your time,[xxx]

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving approximately 5 mph, the contact applied the brakes and heard an abnormal grinding sound from the brakes. Also, the abs warning light illuminated. The failures recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated that the abs unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

Regenerative braking system light appeared on dash, 2013.took vehicle in to get checked. Was told that it was the master cylinder.cost approx 1500.00.went on line and found that other people had same experience and after paying for the replacement of the master cylinder they then had to replace the an abs module to the tune of 4500.00.took my vehicle to another dealership feb of 2014 and was told the abs module needed replaced for 4,724.00 and then the master cylinder for 1360.00.the mechanic did not advise driving due to the potential brake failure.i only have 18,600 miles on this vehicle which makes it difficult to justify putting that much more money into it.it seems toa problem ford needs to deal with.it does involve a safety issueand i'm not sure if they are going to wait until some one dies before they decide to do a recall.

From doing research on the internet i found this is a huge problem with both mercury mariners and ford escape hybrids. I was in shock when the dealer told me it will cost $4,800.00 to repair the abs brakes. This is a safety flaw that should be a recall. I only have 65,000 miles and high payments on this vehicle. I told the dealer i would not pay this. They fixed the suv without my permission saying it was for my safety. Is this legal? i didn't agree with paying any cost.

Abs warning light, regen brake system disabled warning lightbrake system not working properly, hard to stop vehicle

Abs brake light came on, with regen brake disengaged notice appearing, hcu unit failed, seems to be a frequent problem with hybrid

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving 5 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to stop the vehicle. The contact placed the vehicle into park to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder failed and the abs control module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired by the contact. The manufacturer stated that they had never heard of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000. The vin was not available.

The contact called on behalf of his daughter who owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving 45 mph, the re-gen brake disabled warning indicator illuminated and the brakes failed to operate as intended. When the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it operated as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving approximately 35 mph, the brakes failed. The antilock brakes and regenerative brakes disabled warning indicators illuminated. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of road. The vehicle was towed home. The contact also stated that the warning indicators illuminated approximately twenty times before the actual failure. The vehicle was taken to two different dealers, but they could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was invalid. The approximate failure mileage was 131,000.

"takata recall"when i was leaving a store yesterday i noticed that my abs, brake light came on along with a description indicating my check brake system.i never noticed an issue with my breaks prior to these signals coming on and my fianc's car had been functioning well for the last four years.i normally drive the suv so when i noticed it said that i made sure the breaks were working when i started to move.i did notice that the breaks required more of a firm push when i was needing to come to a spot.i didn't have any accidents or caused me to run any stop lights or stop signs.however, after doing my own research i did find out that this is a problem for the 2008 mercury mariners and from some of the warnings i have read stated the breaks ended up failing after this all accrued and about got them into accidents.with the nhtsa already investigating the '2006-2012 fusion and lincoln mkz and the 2006-2011 mercury milan' models with the same issues, it seems the issue is bigger than just the mercury mariner.

Abs brake light warning came on. Brakes pretty much stopped working without any prior warning to the lights. Had to depress the pedal all the way to get brakes. Very unsafe. Now the brake is stuck on and the car doesn't move. Have talked to and read about several people that had the same issue. Why hasn't there been a recall yet?

Abs light and regen brakes disabled light have been coming on while driving. While these lights are on, brakes are squishy and is harder to stop car. This is happening more frequently and at varying speeds. Lights may come on when the car is first started or while driving at varying speeds.

In a hard-braking situation, brakes failed - no discernible deceleration at all, pushing harder than i've ever had to before.this made for rear-ending the guy ahead of me.forensics investigator w/ mech found odb dtcs showed only p0a8d and b1318 - one of which shows a low voltage to abs system.multiple reports of this with escape hybrid owners.i wonder if it is related to the ford fusion hybrid failures?this occurred at 10-15 mph.what happens at 60?local dealership declares "your brakes check out fine and there's no evidence of brake failure."really?how about that radiator and grill that need repair and that quarterpanel sticking out of the right side?evidence enough?i'd like to see this issue root-caused before somebody gets seriously hurt.

Brakes bring vehicle to stop then release and car moves forward 4-6' then brakes engage again. Could cause damage and personal injury.

I have a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid.sometimes when i apply the brakes with medium pressure the left rear of the vehicle will vibrate so hard it rattles the trim in the storage area.it is as though the abs is operating only on that wheel but much more pronounced than when the abs normally actuates.there is no consistency as to when or where this condition occurs.it will not happen for days, then will occur every time i brake for a time period (no particular length). Consumer stated he traded in on a 3 year old vehicle. Consumer stated he has no more information regarding the vehicle left all of the records he had in the vehicle when he traded it in. Failure of abs brakes on 2008 mercury mariner hybrid.this has happened to my car twice.summer of 2009 and the summer of 2010.both times i have had to replace the master brake cylinder.symptoms include inconsistent braking response and loss of brake fluid.driver experiences overly sharp braking and a "grabbing" sensation as well as very soft braking and "coasting" sensation almost as if there are no brakes or very little braking.it is very hard to drive safely in this condition.both times, repair included replacing the master cylinder with a $1500 bill.this resulted in $3000 in repair costs to avoid continuing to drive the vehicle in an unsafe condition.the master brake cylinder should not have failed once on a2008 car much less twice and the dealership has as much told me they feel this may be a system design flaw that needs correcting through recall.

While driving the vehicle the power steering suddenly stops working and the steering gets extremely stiff.this has been happening for a few months now.at first it was in the middle of winter and i attributed it as a freak occurrence due to the cold weather.the next time it happened it was a warm spring day.now it does not occur frequently, but without warning.one time i was making a left turn at a intersection and the steering froze up, causing me to make my turn really wide.i happened to have enough room to complete the turn without a collision, but under other circumstances this defect could cause an accident, possibly fatal in the event of a collision with an oncoming car or at greater speeds.

I have a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid 4 wheel drive.on occasion the steering will loose power assist while turning.the loss of power lasts for a few seconds before the power assist returns.this problem is dangerous as i have to compensate for the loss of steering assist by turning the steering wheel harder, then when the power assist returns the vehicle turns more than i want because the wheel is easy to turn as i am applying a lot of pressure to the steering wheel.the dealer and ford has not been able to determine the problem or suggest a fix.

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that when turning the steering wheel left or right, there was an abnormal noise on numerous occasions. The contact also stated that the power steering warning light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. The technician replaced the steering knuckle, update the pscm and the ic software but the failure persisted. The contact stated that the vin was included in nhtsa campaign id number: 14v284000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 9/18/14 updated 2/4/2015

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds attempting to make a turn, the steering wheel seized. The contact mentioned that extreme force was required to control the steering wheel and the vehicle would independently resume to normal operation. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the computer needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

I am concerned that the problems with the electric power steering system are not limited to a faulty torque sensor but to the overall power steering system which may create the potential for other steering emergencies.as a result, i am providing the following report should you receive similar complaints from other drivers of ford vehicles about worn parts of the power steering column which affected driving. While stationary in a parking lot, after turning on the ignition a sound like a quick pop occurred.after starting to drive and turning the steering wheel to the right, a knocking sound such as that of a small hammer happened several times.turning the steering wheel to the left produced a rubbing sound and minor resistance.there also was a constant squeaking in the rotation of the left front wheel which existed prior to the above occurrence. These conditions continued to occur.on july 9, 2014 the dealer replaced the 8l8z-38676-e steering shaft joint connector. (i was unaware of recall 14s055 at the time.) on the trip home, the steering wheel constantly squeaked while turning to the left.responding to the electronic power steering recall 14s055 on 2008-2011 ford vehicles and a remedy for the squeaking, returned to the dealer on august 1, 2014.electric steering upgrade performed.squeaking seems to be remedied by replacing sway bars and 1 tie rod. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Turning right from a stop, onto a major street, accelerating felt click in wheel and all of the power assist was gone.i completed the turn and continued slow acceleration to around 35mph, the wheel still operated like driving a pre-sixties pickup truck but when i slowed down to make another right turn i really had to put my shoulders into it to complete.i returned home and got on line to see if i needed power steering fluid and found this site. This just happened and appreciate the opportunity to share.

Vehicle was being operated at approx 35 mph when system horn sounded then steering column locked up, causing near miss accident. Ford refuses to acknowledge any recalls or reassess recalll under nhts campaign 14v284000 for steering where their fix appears to be to reprogram software. Appears that this was a quick fix that didn't solve the problem

Without warning the steering became extremely loose. The change was not progressive, abrupt. The steering wheel makes noise when turning right to left, left to right.this is the second 2008 mariner hybrid i have owned and that one did the same thing.in researching on line this problem is well known and arrears to be wide spread.the service manager was well aware of the issue and said there had not been a recall issued but "hold on to your receipts" as though he expected one in the future. Honest, the car was hard to point straight after the problem occurred. How can this not be a safety issue?

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. While driving approximately 15 mph, the steering wheel started to vibrate. A month later, the steering wheel became hard to maneuver and "power steering failure" was displayed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) on april 10, 2015. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

My 2008 mercury mariner hybrid has a dangerous high speed stall condition.it is very serious and puts the vehicle and occupants in a situation that causes a very high risk of a crash.this said, my vehicle is not covered in the current recall?why not?

2008 mercury mariner hybrid.consumer writes in regards to power steering recall never done on vehicle but dealership statespower steering recall repairs were completed. The consumer is currently experiencing a problem with the steering.

A "stop safely now" warning message came on when i was driving on the freeway at 60 miles per hour.the car immediately lost power and became difficult to steer.i pulled over to the right shoulder as safely and quickly as possible.this has occurred multiple times.

I have a 14s05 hard steering, power steering control pump no longer works. This causes my brakes to seize up. The diagnostic also indicates codes c1480 r/f, c1478 l/f, c1313b r/f. Indicating. Brake failure. I am driving this car to commute 45 miles each way to work daily. I am very afraid because this car is a hazard. My vin# does not show that this car is among the group that have a problem but. I do have it. Ford is aware, why should i have to pay for the cover up of their error? it is very difficult to drive, an extreme effort is needed to make any turn, the turn radius has increased i cannot safely turn a corner in the city or on an off ramp. The steering wheel and tires immediately snap back to the forward position

The contact owns a 2008 mercury mariner hybrid. The contact stated that at start-up, the power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that extra effort was needed to steer the vehicle while driving various speeds. The contact initially spoke to allan vigil ford (6790 mt zion blvd, morrow, ga 30260) where she was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The contact called the manufacturer and was referred to the nhtsa for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

Vehicle's gas engine shut off on the freeway at 65 mph without warning leaving only the electric motor to power it.the reduced the maximum speed to 25 mph.dealer said failure of the motor electronics cooling pump caused the loss of power.

Abs and emergency brake light came on spontaneously. Braking abnormal and unable to stop vehicle. Braking system not working. Neutral and had to do shoulders to control vehicle and slow down gradually. Very dangerous!

The suv lost all power while driving 70mph on the highway...everything went off including the engine. The dashboard led read pull over immediately.

Driving home from work at 6 pm on monday and i was going 35 mph and the suv hazard light came on and then said "pull over safely now" and i lost power and couldn't accelerate. Im glade i wasn't on the freeway. Took my suv into ford and they said it was the throttle body. They are fixing it now $845 later im hoping its not going to happen again, but what i have read to a lot of people that have fixed theirs, the problem persists. Im not feeling very comfortable driving my suv on the freeway, and i have to drive it on there 5 days a week for work. Wasn't expecting this to be such a big issue, makes me not want to buy another ford again.... They need to recall this for 2008 also not just the newer vehicles.

Abs and emergency brake light came on spontaneously. Braking abnormal and unable to stop vehicle. Braking system not working. Neutral and had to do shoulders to control vehicle and slow down gradually. Very dangerous!
