On december 23, 2015 i was driving my 2004 mercury grand marquis through an intersection in harris county, texas.i had just received a green light and was proceeding to make a left turn when my vehicle was hit by another vehicle in the driver's side front.the damage to my vehicle was severe. The at fault driver's insurance company declared my vehicle a total loss.my vehicle's air bags did not deploy.i was wearing my seat and shoulder belts at the time of the collision.i was examined at a nearby emergency room.they said "no serious injury" but my orthopedic surgeon said i have a separation of my left shoulder.

My wife was driving our 2004 mercury grand marquis (pre-certified, bought off the showroom floor august 2004); our three teenage foster care children and i were passengers.our marquis entered the parking lot of convenience store so that we could install air in left front tire. We did a u-turn in parking lot to proceed to air compressor.with her right foot on brake pedal, my wife steered the car through the u-turn, heading toward air compressor.suddenly, without any warning, the car accelerated uncontrollably.the brake would not work - brake pedal was pushed all the way down; car continued to accelerate and traveled over a large concrete barrier and crashed into building.the car could not be steered while car sped forward.the air bags did not deploy. We were wearing our seat belts and shoulder harnesses.thankfully, the auto hit the building instead of the gasoline pumps in parking lot.after crashing into building, the engine continued to accelerate or "rev" at high rate. A lady who was pumping gas into her car rushed over to assist us. She insisted that my wife keep her foot on brake pedal and assisted in getting the driver's door open and instructing for my wife to avert her face and inch over in seat toward door after releasing the shoulder harness/seat belt.i was able to get the car in park and turn ignition off. My wife was transported by ambulance to er for treatment of injuries.highway patrol officer made accident report.auto was towed to private repair facility for evaluation.

While driving at night just prior to entering i-77 in columbia sc my headlights went off without warning. I could only keep them on by holding down the high beam lever until i got home. Since then they will sometime work and sometime not. I took it to the local ford dealership and they gave me an estimate of $943.00 for parts and labor. In reading other complaints i see this is not an unusual complaint as it has happened to others. Is there any help from the manufacture as i am sure the local dealership is not sympathetic to the problem. This is a dangerous problem as it comes without warning and i could be anywhere at any speed. This was my mom's car and i thank god it happened to me and not her before she passed away.

I have paid over 500 bucks the first time for the lighting control module. I had my headlights cut off on me while i was driving one day more than 3 years ago. I had tommy vaghun in houston tx repair it. Now i have the same problem again. This is a part that is very expenisve to repair. I have no clue what the problem is that makes this happen. This is a vehicle safety issue with no doubt. This should be a problem that ford pays for the repairs. I can not drive anywhere at night with out the lights turning off. I have to hold the flash to pass to have headlights.

While driving down the street under normal conditions at night, my headlights went out unexpectedly.they would not turn back on, either in the automatic or manual "on" setting.this problem continues to happen.sometimes the lights work, but then will turn off without warning.i researched this problem on the internet and there are many, many, other complaints exactly the same as mine, with the same make and model car.to me, this is a manufacturing defect and a major safety concern.can you imagine this happening at night on the highway in a snowstorm?the faulty part seems to be the lighting control module, which in my area costs $551.78, and labor is about $90.

The contact stated that the low beam headlights failed to function, which caused the contact to apply the high beams each time the failure occurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available. Vin tool confirms parts not available.

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis. While driving approximately 50 mph, the headlightssuddenly failed. The headlights became operable within ten minutes. The malfunction occurred four times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer twice for the same failure. The second time a diagnostic test was performed, the technician stated the computer chip needed to bereplaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000..... Updated 03-28-13 the consumer stated at no time when the lights went off did an indicator on the dash board come on. The dealer advised the lighting control module needed to be replaced. Updated 04/09/2013

When driving at night the low beam headlights go out while vehicle is in motion. This failure is unpredictable and leaves the driver literally "in the dark" with the vehicle moving at whatever speed and direction it is going at.this is definitely a serious safety issue as my research has found that this is a common failure of the vehicle's "light control module" (lcm). Further research reveals that the ford / mercury automotive dealerships maintain a ready stock of this part for replacement at the hefty average price of $ 700.00. Given the severity of this safety issue it is difficult to understand why there has been no apparent action by nhtsa to require a recall by the manufacturer. This failure recurs frequently and unpredictably.

My headlights fail intermittently, don't know when it going to happen. It causes a safety hazard for me and any driver around me on the road. I am afraid to drive the vehicle in the evening. Ford sent me notice of recall twice in two years but, no parts available till they call. Do i have to crash before they get the parts or they waiting for my car to die before it is fixed. A big gamble on fords part.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Headlights went out while driving the vehicle. This was on a dark, dark, 2 lane country road with little or no shoulder. Using the high beam "hold" function light would come on high beam. Working switches would not bring lights back on. Checking lights later, found lights would go out within 5 mins - stay out for less than 5 mins and then repeat. Repair was the lcm module which dealer charged aprox. $700 to fix. Very dangerous and scary! tail lights did stay on.

Sometimes the headlights flick on and off while driving. Then when the car is turned off, there is a clicking noise in the driver side dashboard that continues until it drains the battery. Also, sometimes the door locks cycle open or closed whether the car is driving or off. This has happened multiple times and caused me to replace the battery, and still i have to jump the car from time to time. This has happened several times over the past few years, but only now have i found this site to report it to.

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated whenever the air conditioner mechanism was activated the air failed to flow through the vents. My mother-in-law has a 2004 grand marquis & last night when she started the car to go home after visiting us, the headlights would not come on at all....additionally, the interior lights have come on all by themselves intermittently, and consequently, the battery is drained each time it happens. The interior problem may or may not fix itself by starting/shutting off/opening/closing door. All i did was type "2004 mercury grand marquis" in yahoo search & a multitude of similar problems came up in the results: all stating a defective light control module (lcm). I am going to take the one out of her car today & take it apart & inspect it for cracked ("cold solder") solder joints as almost anything with a pc board ( (made in the last 25 years especially) tends to develop cracked solder because they are made cheaply by using as little solder possible to hold the joint together (when new, anyways) . Yet another cheap, modern junk electronic item pumped out in bulk by the thousands that the manufacturer will not support, unless it fails within the warranty period! i cannot believe ford motor company won't issue a recall for this problem as it is not an isolated problem, according to my research! maybe once someone dies in a car wreck from the lights going out while they're going down a freeway @ 70mph, someone will get a good lawyer and sue the pants off of ford motor company!! class action lawsuit, anybody?

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis. While driving approximately 55 mph at night, the low beam headlights, tail lights, and instrument cluster failed to illuminate. In addition, the high beam headlights were inoperative. The vehicle was driven cautiously with the hazard warning lights activated. The vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 15v861000 (exterior lighting); however, the remedy involved the replacement of the lighting control module and not the other components that failed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated that since 2008, the headlights would turn off intermittently. The lights would turn on once the doors were opened but when the vehicle was started, they would turn off. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that the failure was caused by the computer which was replaced. However, the failure occurred again. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000 and the current mileage was approximately 110,000.updated 02/23/11 the consumer stated the inside lights went out as well. Updated 05/09/11

While driving home with my wife and granddaughter my wipers started to go on in delay mood and my lights turned on.i was shocked at this because my wiper switch was in the off setting and my light switch was in auto setting and it was a bright sunny day.after about ten or 15 minutes the wipers stopped and lights went out.a few day later i was going to the store and it started all over wipers staying on in the delay mood and this time did not stop.i call my brother in florida whom is a auto tech and he told me that it seemed like the multifuction switch and told me to change it out which i did.it did not resolve the issue and the car remains down due to this issue.there is only 42300 on this car which my father gave me as a gift and he bought it new from leominster lincoln mecury and i feel this issue is a safety problem which could lead to complete wiper failing or worse a car fire from some defective system that controls this wiper system.car remains down as of the writing of this report.due to myself being disabled and on s/s disability i do not have the money to fix this problem because i feel a dealer service tech should take this issue from here.i have disconected the battey and the car now sits in my driveway.

Light controler shuts lights off at night while driving. The only way to get lights to drive with is to hold dircetional signial handel up with one hand and drive with the other.

While driving pa turnpike headlights cut off with no warning or any"flickering",replace, bulbs & fuses. Didn't help.. The headlights would not work on auto or manual. The only way we were able to safely get off highway was holding bright lite switch forward. This issue has made recalls of "certain models and certain, but not mine??? why aren't marquis and crown vic ,that are"outside" the recall car list, that have the same problem included???is it because not enough people injured or died?? so i'm stuck with a car i can only drive during the day !!! wth? i live on disability and was told it was a thousand dollar repair... Why wouldn't mercury consider cars "outside" the recall years be treated like they were part of the recall, since all the symptoms are the same?? the dealer made me feel like i was trying to rip him off or scam him. The headlights cut off and back on at their discretion.. I don't fell safe driving my, fairly low mileage car(well maintained).don't believe i'll be driving ford products after this. If ford would at least help those of us out here,by making the lcm sold to us at a free/at cost ,pricing !i feel that would be fair. I'm sure many cars not having this problem don't need "recalled". I would have thought ford would be honest enough to stand by their products, and address this safety issue?! mail me one and i'll put it in...thank you

Headlights would not light had to hold the dimmer switch to flash.what is the potential cost of a fatality due to the headlights going out while driving down the road?wakeup ford.... Don't you see the big picture or are your lights out too?!!!!

The headlights went out on my car while driving home in a snow storm. When i took my vechile to pepboys to find out whats wrong. They said it was the lighting control module that can only be repaired at ford dealership. They also stated it was a recall on this. When i took it to ford they said their was no recall on the module. I am unable to drive my vechile, i cant get to work. Which i am in jeopardy of losing my job. If this is on recall why wont ford fix my car. It put me and my children in harms way of almost crashing trying to make it home.

Loss of headlights while night driving.this happened on two different occasions.correction required was the replacement of the lighting control module (lcm) on a 2004 mercury grand marquis gs ($512,00).we understand this problem entails 2000 to 2007 fordcrown victoria and mercury marquis models only, and ford motor co, has received numerous complaints about this happening but refuses to issue a recall notice.

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v861000 (exterior lighting); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. While driving in the evening on an unlit road with my 10yr old in the car my headlights just went out.there was no place to pull over and we came within inches of ending up in a ravine.i have read your nhtsareport on the issues with ford lcms and i find it ridiculous that this is not considered a safety issue.the internet is full of complaints on this part that ford knows will go bad and still there is no recall.

Headlights go out unexpectedly and w/o warning. This has happened at all different speeds, in a parking lot 5-10mph, on roadway 30-45mph and on the highway65-70mph.lights will come back on just as unexpectedly w/o apparent cause.have shut down and restarted car with no effect, turned light switch on/off, no effect and then they will turn on after several minutes while parked.sometimes the lights will turn on and off several times before staying light.

My mercury marquis is unsafe!both of my night-time headlights went out at the same time.all other lights work fine inside and out.the head-lights now only work if i hold the high-beam bar, however, they do not work if i let go of the control bar. I drive my vehicle very little, and mostly during the day; however, i do take 70 mphinterstate highway trips returning at night.there is no fuse for the head lights or the light control module in either the fuse box above the brake pedal, or under the hood.further investigation reveals that the head light fuse is inside the light control module which is located under the dash above the gas-pedal.also, i've learned that even when this lcm unit is replace, that a new lcm unit can be defective also. Common sense dictates that something electricalis causing the fuse to blow in the unit.i believe this indicates a looming fire hazard about to happen. Overheating the electrical system from where?if i would elect tohave the lcm unit modified with a larger interior fuse, i fear this is not a solution either.ford needs to find the source of the problem that is blowing this fuse even in the new units.the installation at the dealership is $700.00 or above.the market price of thelcm unitis $90.fords needs to recall and replace this lcm unit for an indefinite period; however, since they are making a bunch of money replacing them, and no one has gotten killed yet, will they?i fear replacing the unit this week, an the new one failing and me, suddenly with no headlights possibly running over a pedestrian, or crashing on the interstate and me or someone dying. This problem makes my mercury absolutely unsafe !!!i want an indefinite recall of this unit, and for ford to find and repair the cause of the unit failing.

I was traveling down the highway at 55 when i noticed my headlights were not reflecting off the road signs. I pulled over and checked my lights and noticed i only had parking lights not headlights at all. I got back in the car and tried the light switch but nothing came on. I had to have the car towed and was told the lcm lighting control module has failed. At a cost of 400 dollars. Safety hazard ford knows about but is doing nothing about it.

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis.while driving 50 mph, the contact smelled a burning odor and noticed smoke coming from the lighting control module.he pulled the vehicle over and opened the hood.the horn began to sound, so he disconnected the battery.the fire department arrived and a report was filed.the contact was informed that the failure was due to an electrical issue.the vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the lighting control module box was repaired.the dealer stated that they were unaware of the failure.the failure and current mileages were 79,000.

Headlights go out while driving. They will stay off for a 2 or 3 min. And will come back on for a while, then go off again.i have had the light go off in a 5 mile drive 4 times.this is very dangerous. I have not had a crash, but was pulled over by the police.i have replaced one part, the multi-purpose switch and it had no effect on the lights.after several days of research i believe the cause is the light control module, this part runs from 400 to over 700 dollars.i am on a fixed income and do not have the money to fix this problem.ford should be the one to replace the part.the headlight switch has nothing to do with the lights going out.since the purchase date the switch was on auto, after changing the m-p switch i put the headlights on manual on/off.this problem has being going on for over 2 months. The problem has not been fixed. No funds.

Catalytic converter fail, engine idles rough while in park. High loss of engine power while driving differentials in back tires are imbalancedā€¦timing fail. Steering not calibrated, drivetrain out of sync altogether. Back wheels, left and right; randomly spin & torque hard while car is already in motion on any private road, hidden road, domestic road and high capacity, high speed highway, causing vehicle to fishtail uncontrollably and dangerously, and wildly side to side potentially veering off the road which could result in death unless the driver regains proper control of vehicle. Out of sync car computer and the mechanical devices built into car do not have proper timing performed on those particular moving parts altogether. The car was not manufactured properly mechanically nor electrically altogether. Headlights & electric system etc have an incompleterecall on my vehicle. The headlights failed during operation of the vehicle while in light rain at night in town. I did not notice the lights failed, on coming traffic flashed their lights to tell me my lights were off. Pulling over to the curb i wiggled the cabling under the dash and the lights came on, i then proceeded to move again and the light went off. After a few attempts of wiggling the cabling near the lem module the lights stayed on enough to return to my home. This has been an on going situation with the lights, and i have been on the internet to troubleshoot this fault in the ford motor vehicles. That this problem has been reported with out a recall is appalling. The location of the failed unit most likely is the reason for service mechanic estimates of $700 to $1500 to replace this part. One only has to go on the internet and write the 2004 lighting problem and see the lem module has a un-going product failure.

Lcm (lighting control module) recall from 2015.i bought the car in march of 2016 and the dealer failed to take advantage of the recall before i purchased the car.

Lights went out while driving down a major highway, only brights would work, then they went off. After clicking them off and on they came back on for a while , then off again. What a dangerous situation this is!! please do a recall on this as i have seen numerous complaints about this happening to people. I can not go anywhere at night in my car, only trust daytime driving now!

While driving at night with the headlight switch in the automatic selection the headlights went out.this was on june 6, 2009, at 11:00 p. M.then on june 27, 2009, at 9:10 p. M. While turning onto an interstate highway the headlights went out again.this time the headlight selection switch was in the manual mode.both time the highbeam selection switch was pulled and after a 15 to 20 minute period the headlights came back on.

The left hand (driver side) heat shield that covers the exhaust manifold has completely rusted at the bolting points causing the cover to dislodge and drag against the steering shaft .several times while turning at intersections, especially when making left turns, the steering would temporarily lock up for a few seconds making turning extremely hazardous.once i almost struck another vehicle due to the steering being locked while turning.i initially suspected low power steering fluid but fluid checked correct and pump seems to be working fine.i did not notice the rusted cover pinned between the steering shaft and manifold until i removed the engine cover and air intake tubing to access the spark plugs. I removed the rusted shield and the car turns just fine now.i have the rusted shield available for inspection if needed. Thanks

I was driving at a speed of 45mph on a county road in rush hour traffic when my car's engine light came on simultaneously as power of vehicle slowed while making a rattle type noise and cab smelled strongly of gas. I rolled windows down pulled over within a block to a napa store. The employee told me they do not run diagnostics and i would have to take it somewhere. I drove slowly to a 2nd auto parts store 1 mile away to run diagnostics. Once done, diagnostics identified a miss-fire on spark plug #2. Had vehicle towed to home and took 'heli-coil' off and spark plug came out with it damaged. The heli coil was also damaged. The threads of spark plug was flattened three threads from bottom.contacted auto parts store again where the technician told me that ford has been having problems with there triton spark plugs blowing out on the 5.4l engines that they only screw in 3 threads into the head of the engine and there were pending lawsuits.the next day i called ford dealership and spoke with the acting service manager. "he told me there was nothing he could do about it and i should call customer care of ford: 800-392-3673.i did and rep. Told me there was no recall and my vehicle and it was out of warranty at 101,100.mi. There was nothing they could do.in the event there were to be a re-call to save my receipts and ford would reimburse me. I read about the problems that multiple customers were or had had regarding the same problem with a few vehicles leaking gas with the problem.this is all happening when the cars, trucks and suvs exceeds 100,000miles.i feel this is not only poor manufacturing of an inferior aluminum casing and spark plug and also not enough threads to hold the spark plug in safely.to have it jump out allows gas to also be expelled onto the cars remaining parts and vapors could ignite causing the car to potentially catch fire.

I had what seems to be a simple coolant leak but it turned out to be the plastic intake manifold cracked.putting a plastic part on top of a motor seems to me a failure of engineering on the part of ford.i did not receive any call back for this part.i did some searching on the web and found that many ford owners had the same problem.i plan to call ford company on monday.do you have any info for me on this subject.thank you.

When driving at low speeds, the vehicle would surge forward without warning. The consumer will take the vehicle to the dealership for inspection. Please provide any further details.*la

I was driving in low light conditions with the headlight switch in the 'on' position and noted no lights, i pulled to the side of the road and noted all other lights brake/tail/running were in working order. After a brief outage the lights came back on - and i continued on.later that evening approximately 11p, in the dark, i was to return home.the headlights failed to light after several attempts and i had to drive home while holding my high beam selector in the flash to pass position.after approximately 7 miles the headlights came back on and i made it home.i checked the internet and found a 'customer satisfaction' campaign, though not a recall.i called the dealership and explained the issue, they had me in the next day, replaced the part and had me back on the road in under an hour, at no cost.the part alone is $260 on internet sites, and i've heard of dealer charging 600-7000 dollars for the repair - prior to the campaign.i'm satisfied and hope it is fixed for good now.

After receiving recall reminder from ford about safety recall for headlights inoperative i made appointment with dealer providing vin# to dealer to get lcm orderedto replace it and it was more than $500, and vin specific.arrived at appointment and service manager noted ford would not reimburse them to replace lcm, could do a rewire car per their computer instructions and something about diagnostic fees, and i needed to contact ford customer support to get a number authorizing the dealer to replace the lcm as noted as remedy in nhtsa 15v861000.called customer support and heard automated message thru automated call system related to their #15s39that they would notify when parts are available, this didn't seem contacted customer support online noting issue and they did not provide # needed for that dealer and suggested going to another dealer.

Headlights and dashboard lights went out and no longer work.. If highbeam switch is held lights work

My lights will not come on they just switch off sometimes. I have the hold the brights just for the lighting to get home...

Headlights go off without warning while driving or stationary.they may or may not come back on.has happened many times and now everyday. The lights work for three - five minutes then go off. The mechanic shop says it is a faulty light control module.

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated that while the vehicle was being driven the front headlamps, rear taillamps, turn signals and dashboard lights became inoperable. The cause of the failure was not determined. The dealer vera chaddy (1240 bloomfield, fairfield nj) and the manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 147,000.

I was traveling from memphis tn. Back home to jonesboro ar. And the lights just stop working it was about 9:30 at night on expressway and all of a sudden no lights and they didn't come back on the headlights and i had to pull the flash to pass foward and hold just to have lights the whole trip home holding it and having to drive with other hand difficult. So it is a safety issue to me and the many others with this issue thanks i pray y'all do a recall on that part to fix the many drivers with the same problems.

Our headlights just stopped working.you cant turn them on and the only way you can turn the headlights on is to push the stick forward and hold it forward while you are driving down the road.other than that, they wont come on.all other lights are operating fine.

Re recall 15s39/nhtsa 15v 861....dealer will not replace module uin less i have a problem says it only an extension of the warranty.it would be a little late if it fail at night on a major highway,...why arent they replacing them, as per recall notice of jan 2016 recall say7s it should be done as mit is a safety issue. Chapman ford in egg harbor twp says its no an actual recall only a warranty7 extension which is it

Headlights suddenly go out while driving at night. Switching between settings does not bright them back on. The only way to have any headlights on at all is to pull and hold the bar that turns on the brights.

All headlights quit without notice of any sort. After replacing bulbs and switches, i went directly to ford. They charged almost $700.00 to replace the"processor lighting control", which the service clerk explained was likely the problem. Since ford knew this was a problem, why did they not recall the vehicles having this problem.we could have had a very serious accident.

A recall was issued regarding headlights not functioning for this car last year. I own 2 mercury grand marquis, both have headlights that go out intermittently and the local dealer maintains that the parts still aren't available to complete the recall service. So the end result is i have 2 cars i can only drive during daylight with no precipitation or fog in the forecast.the service manager says that we could pay privately to have it fixed and then maybe get reimbursed by ford.i believe ford should be doing more to complete this recall service.

Lights go out after driving less than a 1/4 mile.

2004 grand marquis, original owner, 60002 miles.low beam headlights ( in rain ) just turned off by themselves.high beam was okay.cars approaching from opposite direction continued to blink their lights at us - telling us our lights were not on ( state of florida requires headlights to be on during rain storm ).called dealer upon reaching home - he did not seem surprised.said bring it in and we will replace the " lighting control module ".after several minutes on the phone was informed that the cost would be approx. $700. And thattype repair is common on the ford and mercury automobiles.lights just going off - rain, fog or night driving is unsafe.this problem is a traffic problem for the driver as well as fellow drivers sharing the road.

I started my car after dark and did not have any headlights.all the other lights worked.the only way i could make the headlights function was by holding the high beam switch on the signal lever toward me all the way home, over 1 hour..when i got home i looked on the internet to see if this was a common problem and it is with this year and model car.it is a safety issue and the manufacturer should warn and address this problem.

I received a customer satisfaction program letter on april 14 2014, regarding my lighting control module. The module went out on june 30 2015. I had the letter but i forgot about it until i was looking up some papers just recently. Of course i had it fixed by a private garage on 6/ 30/ 2015. It only had 61,416 miles . On it at that time. I can not see why i can not be reimbursed for the repair now. It cost me $387.02. I have been a ford customer since 1956.

The headlights do not stay on. The lights may or may not go on initially but can go out at any time making driving hazardous. The only way to make them light is to hold the handle in the "bright light" position." i have contacted ford with the problem and several dealers to no avail. This has been happening for approximately a year. A related problem seems to be that the air conditioner blower stopped working and the brake light stays on all the time. Judging from the complaints i have read on the internet, many people have all three problems at once.*ln

While driving home approx 10:30 pm my headlamps flicked on & of then went out totally and will not come back on, obviously a serious safety issue !

I was getting ready to leave my office at dark, started my car and headlights did not come on, everything else was working.it is now april 10, 2014.about 2 months ago my lights have been working intermittently, i will be driving down highway and they will go out.i pull the turn lever to bright lights and they work, let it go and they go out.sometimes they will come back on, sometimes not.it's getting worse and worse.

Both headlights went out at night without warning, dangerous condition.the dealer replaced the lighting control module which had failed #4w7z13c788.

2004 mercury marquis headlights would sporadically stop working.

My car is covered by a recall for lighting control module controlling the headlights.this recall was issued december 21, 2015.i just spoke to the service manager at my local ford dealership and i was informed that ford motor company has not made repair parts available as of this time.since this recall covers a component that when it fails can render the headlights inoperable i am curious as to why ford motor company is being allowed to not make a remedy for this recall available?

The contact owns a 2004 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated that the exterior headlamps independently failed. The contact stated that the headlamps would sporadically work after a period of time. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. Prior to the failure, the intake manifold leaked anti-freeze. The failure mileage was 96,794.

Both headlights suddenly wouldn't turn on. Very dangerous. Night driving prohibited. Ford has agreed to repair due to voluntary recall. Glad this didn't happen when i was out at night. I live near dark dangerous highways and this could have led to fatal driving conditions had it happened on the road at night.this shouldn't be a "voluntary" recall where you have to call ford to get the fix.

I was driving on the interstate when the headlights went off suddenly. The only way i could get lights was by holding the dimmer switch toward me on bright. Then it would suddenly click back on and then go off again.it was very scary. After looking this upon the internet this same safety issue has been reported numerous times with the exact same complaint. This is very dangerous.

The nighttime head lights failed on the mercury marquis. 2004 model; we brought the car into the dealership to have the module replaced which is expensive.

Malfunctioning headlights on vehicle. Unexpectedly without warning the headlights failed making for a dangerous, scary drive home. Manually had to hold down the highbeam lever towards me to drive the hour and half home on the highway.

I was driving down the road at night and was turning left when my headlamps just turned off for no reason and i had to drive with high beems the only way they would work is if you hold the turn signal lever towards you.this scared me to death because in my state at this time of year deer are everywhere.

My 2004 mercury grand marquis headlights keep turning off without warning at night. I almost killed a pedestrian as the lights went out at night and i couldn't see before stopping the car.i did however strike the empty babystroller they were pushing which contained groceries.i'm told by the dealer that it is a module. Costing $500. Plus $99 an hour to diagnose ( which will of course be a min of two hours ) ad then the labor fortotal of about $1,000. This seems to happen more often the not. I've looked online and found lots of people with the same problem. Fortunately there have been no injuries or deaths yet as a result that i'm aware of. So when there is a death because of this, whose is going to tell the family that this was aproblem that could have been avoided or fixed. We should have to waitfor injury or death for action to be taken. The dealer ( lincoln mercury) says its a defective part ( module). This is a safety issue since you can't legally drive a car @ night without lights. Please look into this and make something happen, please !

My vehicle was recalled, and the recall notice states go to any ford dealer.i went to pegues-hurst motor company 200 spur 63, p. O.box 3686 longview, tx 75606 (903) 758-6211.they did the repair, but when i picked up my vehicle the auto lamp no longer works.i reported it the next morning and the service advisor, luis a cavazos said the technician terry l. Bates, told him it did not work when he drove it in to the bay.i told him that was not true and that i know that it worked when i dropped it off because i always kept my auto lamps on and it was dark when i left my home to drive to their dealership.i arrived at their dealership at approximately 6:50 am, december 05, 2017 and their service department does not open until 7:00 am.their lights were still out and i was the second vehicle there that morning.i told the service advisor that the module kit they put in must be defective or he hooked something up incorrectly.in essence they are calling me a liar, cheat and scam artist.i spoke to the service manager and i got the feeling they were not taking responsibility so i lost trust in them and asked for the general manager of the dealership who was not there at 10:00 am on thursday, december 07, 2017.i asked them to have him call me and they said okay.later that day i was told he was on vacation until monday, december 11, 2017 and as of today, wednesday, december 13, 2017 i have not heard from them.i had my personal mechanic check and he believes it is the module they put in that causes my auto lamps to no longer work.the amber lamps still come on and the dash board still lights up and the dome lights still come on when i unlock the care with my remote control.this company is calling me a liar, cheat and a thief.i never had a problem with the car or my auto lamps.i am not a thief or cheat as they have implied.

I left the house after dark to pick up my husband from work. When i got to his job i turned the car off because i was early. When he got to the car and i restarted it the headlights did not come on. They came back on after i used the turn signal about 2 minutes later. After that we notice that occasionally the lights would go off while driving at night but would come back on after a couple of minutes. Until one night when they stop working altogether. It stayed that way till we took it to a dealership where they informed us that they were aware of it happening to other cars but the piece that we needed was on back order and we would have to wait for one and a half months. While we were waiting the only way to have headlights while driving was to hold the high beams stick because it wouldn't even work if you pushed the high beams to the always on position.

Headlights randomly turn off. Doesn't seem to matter if i'm driving or not.

While my wife was driving home at night, her headlights went out on her 2004 mercury grand marquis.she tried all combinations to get the lights back on and had to hold the high beam passing light up while driving the rest of the way home.i took the car to the local ford dealer to get it repaired and they told me it could take a month or more to get the part to fix it.in our area, thunderstorms come up regularly during the day, so the car can't even be driven during the day.ford motor company says that they can't provide a loaner or a rental so that we can drive safely until it is fixed.i don't understand why headlights going out is not a safety issue.

The headlights turned off ,while driving 20 mph,and would not come back on..i have noticed on the internet that there are alot of complaints about this same problem, why no recall, what if i was driving 55 mph, things could have turned out very bad..my car will sit in front of my house until a cure is found..thank you

I recently(2 months) returned my 2003 grand marquis due to the headlights going out intermittently. My mechanic explained that there was a recall for the failures of the lcm. The dealership replaced the device in january. Last night while i was driving in the dark, the lights went out again. This will again need to be replaced. Are they using faulty parts for the recall? this is very dangerous and i am lucky to be alive to even type this today.

Lcm (lighting control module) recall from 2015.i bought the car in march of 2016 and the dealer failed to take advantage of the recall before i purchased the car.

My light control module has been determined by the local dealer to be defective. I've been told it is on back order w/ no eta.i've since been told the nhtsa has inexplicably found this to "not be a safety issue". I'm wondering on what planet the nhtsa drives that having intermittently working headlights is not a safety issue?i am expecting a more definitive and timely response to having my car repaired.

I just recently purchased this vehicle from a small dealer on 6/30/15. On 7/8/15, at about 8pm, i was driving home from a long trip for work, got about 20 miles into my 70 mile drive, when it seemed like the road in front of me was darker than it should have been, i made sure my headlight switch was on headlight mode. It was actually on automatic mode, so switched it to reg headlight mode. I was not use to this new car yet, having not driven it much at night yet and just thought it was my imagination, that they were not on as they seemed to have worked previously. I kept driving as i could still see the road in front on me but it was definitely getting darker and darker and now cars coming from the other direction were flashing me, so i had a feeling that they were not working. When it was safe to do, after trying unsuccessfully to get the headlights working by turning the switch dial, i immediately found a somewhat safe spot to pull over. I got out, looked in the front and surely they were not working but only in flash mode. I turned car off, checked fuses, waited about 10 more minutes, then started car again. They finally came on, so i took advantage of the situation and made a dash towards home again, which was probably another 35 miles or so. I do have aaa, if i needed to use it but just wanted to get home. I made it home safely, thank god but this seems to be intermittent, as they work sometime and other times they don't. I was wondering if there is any recall on this matter as it seems to be a huge safety issue and i do not want to be in anymore positions where this keeps happening. I work late a lot but since this has happened, i'm extremely nervous driving car past a certain time now and can't afford this to keep happening as this is my main car, i use daily.thank you very much and look forward to any/all replies back. Have a great day. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Headlights randomly turn off while driving.ford states this is not a safety issues, it is!can't be driving without headlights; can cause accidents, tickets, failure to pass state inspections, etc. Ford has issued customer relationship campain 14n01, but the part to fix this problem is on back order, and they are unable or unwilling to give any time frame on when part witll be available.

2004 mercury marquis. After 2-3 hours of driving with the headlights on, they will go out. All other lights continue to work properly. This is a very dangerous situation. I stopped the car and continued with my trip during the daylight. I believe this is a problem with the lighting control module and is a common problem.

Headlights go off unexpectedly while driving at night. Experimenting found that high beam (unsafe when driving on 2 way road) may be kept on by holding the turn signal lever in theup position (thus occupying the left hand while driving)internet search indicates that this is a fairly common problem with this make and model, and that replacement of the light control module is expensive ($700 - $900) and not alwaysa long term fix. Should be a ford recall item.

I was driving in a small town on small street with no street lighting. I was about 15 miles per hour and started to brake for a stop sign. Headlights flashed and went out. I turned my headlights off and then turned them back on and they were good. After making a left turn from the stop sign about 100 feet my lights went out. It took a while to find in the dark a place to pull over. I tried turning my engine off completely, and when i started it back up, no lights. I played around with my light levers and finally found that if i depressed and held the flash lever my lights would work.i had one heck of a time trying to make to left turns and hold down lever to get home.

This car has had a recall for lighting since 12/21/15. The lights have gone out while i was driving on the interstate. The local ford dealer is unable to say when the recall parts may become available. I think they should do something since this has been over a year on recall.

Vehicle headlights went out at highway speeds with no apparent warning.pulled over and examined lights, only fog lights working.turned off vehicle and restarted, lights worked.sporadic lights working, then not working.able to manually pull and hold dimmer switch to activate bright lights.after researching this problem on the internet i have discovered the problem is the same all across the country in the 2003-05 mercury grand marquis.the lighting control module (lcm) is problematic and poses a safety concern for many owners.ford charges $700-800 to replace this module when i and many of the internet (http://www.carproblemzoo.com/mercury/grandmarquis/headlight-switch-problems.php) owners feel a recall isa valid request.

While driving at night with the headlight switch in the automatic selection the headlights went out.this was on june 6, 2009, at 11:00 p. M.then on june 27, 2009, at 9:10 p. M. While driving, headlights go out.there are hundreds of reports about this on the web, but ford has done nothing about it.they don't even tell owners what to do when the headlamps go out in such a dangerous emergency.(by holding the headlight control arm back in the high beam position, the headlamps will go on (in my case) as is reported by others.)(that fatalities are not reported is irrelevant. This is extremely serious defect and ford has been covering it up for years.)-30-

On 7-17-13 the lighting control module broke on my car. I repaired my car with the purchasedcardone part #73-71002 for $343.14 from autozone. I later received a letter from ford regarding the csp 14n01. I submitted my receipt to the dealer on 4-28-14 and received reimbursement. On 8-29-14 the part broke again on my car. Autozone/cardone warranty expired 7-17-14. I repaired my car with the purchased cardone part #73-71002 for $343.14 again, this time from oreilys. I called ford for a reimbursement. They told me it was a one time reimbursement and to contact cardone or nhtsa. In jan 2016, i received a letter from ford regarding srn 15s39/nhtsa recall 15v-861. At that time we were not experience loss of lights. Now on 3-24-16, i was pulled over at night by the police for no lights, the part broke again. Oreilys/cardone warranty expired 8-29-15. Oreilys did not reimburse me. I contacted cardone they told me to contact oreilys. So now i am contacting nhtsa.. This cardone part, part #73-71002 is defective obviously. As of today, the part is still being sold at both autozone and oreilys. We do not have any headlights. We are not going to buy the same $343.14 defective part a third time. Please recall the cardone part 73-71002. How do i fix my car? there are no working parts to buy? both receipts are attached.

Headlights on my 2004 mercury grand marquis stopped working while driving. All of the fuses are ok so problem is somewhere else. Parking lights and blinkers still work. Can hold the high beam lever towards the driver seat and lights will come on but i must hold the lever in while driving with one hand.

I have escaped quite a few accidents on my way home.with the new time change, i leave work right at dusk.the lights will not come on.i live way out in the country and have to drive 15 miles out.i have to switch to my high beam when a car is coming my way, and i blind it andother cars as well.i am soooo tired of this.i am going to cause a terrible accident !!!! i took my recall letter to the ford car dealership here in town months and months ago.i keep calling for an update, and they say that the part has not come in.what can i do?

Driving home at night in my 2004 mercury grand marquis all of a sudden my headlights went out. The only way to have headlights was to manually hold back the high beam mechanism on the steering column. Eventually they will come back on for a while but cut off again. Through research i found out it is a lcm module and can be fixed for approximately $700.00. I think mercury should bear some or all of the responsibility for this as it will eventually cause a very severe accident.

I was driving southbound on route 95 from baltimore to washington at night.while driving, my headlights suddenly went out.i normally keep the headlights set on the automatic mode.when the headlights went out, i turned the headlight dial on the dash to each of the positions without being able to reilluminate the headlights.i noticed that when i pulled the turn signal lever towards me, the high-beams would go on, but they would not go on when the lever was pushed away from me to keep the high beams on while freeing my hands.i therefore had to drive for approximately 20 miles while keeping the highbeams activated with my left hand.this posed problems when i needed to turn the wheel.i brought the car to my local ford dealership, jerry's ford in annandale, virginia.even though i kept the car at the dealership for several days, they were unable to diagnose the problem because the headlights were properly functioning.the problem recurred while i was driving south on i-95, headed to new york, on october 6.at that time i lost the headlights and they remained out for well over one hour, requiring me to keep the high beams activated with my left hand while driving the car.i am now experiencing the problem on nearly a daily basis.i make short trips to the grocery store, less than a mile from my house, at night, and invariably lose the headlights while driving home.one time i was able to restore the headlights by turning the dial on the dash to the manual position (far right).at other times, this does not work.

Exterior headlights go on and off intermittently. Have to hold high beam in place in order to have lights.will automatically turn off and on by itself. Has been doing this for about a wk and is getting worse.

1st incident:headlights went off about 2 minutes after starting car and beginning to drive .would not turn on again while driving or when car was stopped and running. Turned off car and tried again. Headlights go out when driving.i can pull back to do the passing lights and then come on while i am holding it.i can kick the lighting control module above the gas pedal and sometimes it will come on while i am driving.other times i have to pullover put the car in park and kick till it comes back on.this will happen several times

2004 mercury grand marquis outside lights goes off and on intermittently.i have 72,000 miles on my car.it suddenly happen one day while i was driving at night from my second job on the highway.it scared me nearly to death and is very dangerous.

Head lights started flickering and most of time i had kick at the lightning control module to make it work while in motion on major highway

Vehicle has defective lighting control module (lcm). Headlights would not turn on until lcm was kicked. (lcm is mounted directly above gas pedal) now headlights are turning off while driving. (but come back on if the lcm is kicked. ) looking at ebay there are many companies that offer a total upgrade of your existing lcm. They install heavier duty relays. The part # on my lcm is 4w7t-13c788-aa.so it is evident that there is a problem with many lcm's in and around that model year.

On three or four occasions over a month or so, my headlights, which i turned on manually, went out while i was driving.the last time it occurred, i was on a dark, unlit, two-lane road and thought i would not get home alive.i pulled over, turned off the engine, turned on my emergency flashers and interior lights so that other vehicles would see me.when the road was clear, i started the car again, turned on the headlamps and proceeded to continue my ride home.the lights again went out and i repeated the process until i was home safely.after that, i drove only during daylight.iwent to a spartan auto care center and after a diagnostic scan, was told that i needed to replace the head light control module.i was told that this was a common problem with the grand marquis. I elected to take it to a ford dealer when i finally could afford to repair it.the dealer replaced the head light control module on march 30, 2012 at a cost of $760.43.i have seen a litany of complaints from other owners, so this is not an isolated problem.i think this is a dangerous defect and we should be reimbursed for the expense involved.

I am currently having problems with my 2004 mercury grand marquis with the head lights not coming on or going out. All other light stay on. Turning the light switch on / off and it won't come on. Same symptoms in auto or manual headlight mode. If i stop the car it will come back on. It then might go off after a while. I see others have had this same problem, this was confirmed by my local ford dealership.very common problem with serious safety concerns.dealer tells me it is a failure of the light control module (lcm).

Head lights on my 2004 mercury grand marquis will not come on. Parking lights work and hi beams.got pulled over by columbus oh police department because i was driving with hi beams on. This is the second time that this has happened.

Headlights flicker on and off without warning. I have to hold my bright lights switch towards me in order to see on the road at night on my way to and from any given destination without warning. I've had it fixed but didn't fix the problem because it continues to happen.

2004 mercury grand marquis headlight will not come on. Must hold high beam lever to use headlights and drive with one hand. I replaced the light assembly didn't help.

Headlights would not light had to hold the dimmer switch to flash.what is the potential cost of a fatality due to the headlights going out while driving down the road?wakeup ford.... Don't you see the big picture or are your lights out too?!!!!

No funds.

Driving home in the evening on a rural 2 lane highway in ms. And my headlights goes off. No warning justwent out. Tried to manually turn them on, but nothing happened. This incident could have turned out very different, if i wasn'tfamiliar with the area...this problem seems to be bigger than just me...there was an investigation by your agency nhtsa action #: pe08066,11/26/08 to 3/24/09. Headlights stop working at night and will not come back on .only headlights .all other lights work fine.

When i was driving my mercury grand marquis on the high way the lights just shut off at first it would happen for short periods of time and if i pushed it in they would work well after a month of two it completely wouldn'tstay on anymore and the high beams i would have to use won't work any longer as well.

Since august 2013, every time i turned on my signal light, the intermittent sound for the signal would click faster than usual indicating that a light might be bad.i would check all the lights around the vehicle and they were all good.then going about 55 on a highway at night, i noticed that it was really dark in front of my vehicle.pulled over and found that i was driving without light.the head lamps had turned off even though they were on the on position.i had to drive home holding my high beam lights at all times.i heard a click, the lights came on.i let go of the high beam.the head lamps stayed on for 15 min and click, they went off again. This happened to me 4 times.finally,i took the car to have it diagnosed and was told that the lighting control module had gone bad.i would think that there would have been a recall on this item since so many people have had the same problem as listed on nhtsa website.it could be really dangerous.

Jan. 2016-i received a letter from ford motor company saying there is a recall 15s39 and when parts are available ford will let me know and the part will be replaced.april 2017 _ i receive a letter from ford saying parts are available, schedule an appointment.called flood ford and lincoln in narragansett ri was told i had to first have them determine if a part was needed, then i would have to return to have the part replaced if needed.when the car was taken in to have it reviewed the vehicle did not enter the service area at all.i was asked to go outside into the parking lot of the dealership with the clerk from the counter from service department. I was told to get into my car --start it -- and apply the brake.we were in the parking lot of the dealership and the vehicle in park although ignition was on.i applied the brake as asked, theni wastold, the brake lights are fine i don't need the part for the recall. I was all set and ok to leave.the recall 15s39 has nothing to do with the brakes so clearly this dealership does not service their customers correctly.i had both letters from jan 2016 and april 2017 that showed it was for the headlights.i'm filing a complaint that this dealership did not perform the work they should have.how can i get the lighting control module (lcm)replaced on my vehicle? the lcm is the part for the 15s39 recall.when there is a recall for a part, is the manufacturer required to replace the part or can they say it is not needed?thank you for your time.

The instrument panel, radio, a/c, etc., all interior lights flicker randomly. I notice this when i am driving at night mostly. It does it during the day, but is not as noticeable. I have already changed the module one time, and it is doing it again. Has been occurring for two years.

I was driving along and started to turn up a street and it took 2 lane's because the steering calm. Froze up and hard to turn. I took it to the ford dealer and they told me all the 2004 ford grand m. Have the same prob. . however ,they have not been recalled only the 2005 - 2011. I had it fixed because i need my car. Its the lower steering shaft. By the way the car only has 33890 mile's. I only drive it to church on sunday's and to the food store once a week so it sits a lot, however not the prob. From sitting, just crappie part's.

Turning the steering wheel became hard with uneven "catches" (not smooth motion) when turning left or right and also turning the steering wheel back to "center".steering linkage from steering column to the steering "box" appears to be binding up.this makes turning the steering wheel sluggish and jerky.power steering fluid and belts were ok.

My 2004 mercury grand marquis has extremely tight steering issue. Especially tight on left turning. The car only has 51,900 miles. Saw ford has recalled 2005 to 2011. Not sure why they don't recall 2003 and 2004. They are the same generation. The problem was found immediately after parked 2 days. Fortunately it is not on highway. Can't image what safety problem it will cause.

Steering has become progressively more difficult over the past two months. Initially the tight steering would go away after driving, or only be slightly noticeable. However at this point, the wheel can only be turned by applying significant force, and then when the wheel does turn, it does so in a jerky fashion.

2004 grand marquis, power steering went out about 2 years ago, around 2016-2017, got it repaired at my expense.was fine until about 4-5 months ago, started clicking/knocking noise when i turned steering wheel.this happens when stationary and when car is moving at any speed with turns.also steering wheel does not return to center after turning unless i move it.it is also tight turning at times, feels like it is almost locking up sometimes.afraid it will lock up and cause an accident.not sure what the problem is but since 2005 and later models have been recalled for this issue think 2004 grand marquis need recall for this issue also. There are numerous reports of this issue and several accidents have happened because of this problem. This happens either stationary or at any speed on any surface.mileage is just over 100,000 actual miles on my car.

After being idle for approximately one week, and driving the car from the driveway, the steering wheel became very loose as if the steering wheel was going to fall off.there is a clicking noise made as you turned the steering wheel and the wheels do turn on the car.we had the car towed to a ford dealership to have the car inspected and possibly repaired.we do live in a snowbelt area with lots of salt on the roads. I did notice that ford issued a recall for the same model car for years 2005 through 2011 and wonder if this is a similar problem those cars suffered but was not noticed in the previous year(s).

Thanks

I noticed a loud groaning sound from my car anytime i turned left or right.i took it to an independent shop, which flushed the power steering system and replaced the power steering pump.afterwards, the car's steering was even worse, turning failed multiple times, would not turn left or right without excessive force.i fear for the safety of myself and my 4-year-old while operating the car.it is still at the shop, now they will replace rack and pinion shaft, and/or lower intermediate shaft, totaling near $2000. I cannot afford to pay, not when there is a recall for grand marquis' 2005-2011, manufactured march 4, 2004-2011 (recalls 13s08, 14s25) for the exact same issues. Please help, my car was manufactured within this window, on april 30, 2004.

My wife and 4 year old daughter were struck by a 2004 mercury grand marquis on 04/21/16. They were driving in eastbound traffic in a 2008 nissan ultima and the driver of the mercury grand marquis was driving in westbound traffic. The driver of the grand marquis lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the vehicle of my wife and daughter. The driver died at the scene of the accident. My wife sustained substantial damage to her right leg and my daughter sustained substantial trauma to her skull, neck, back, spinal cord, throat, and intestines. My daughter is paralyzed on the right side and the doctors say her prognosis is unknown. She has a tracheostomy and is unable to speak. I have read numerous complaints online regarding sudden loss of steering with 2004 mercury grand marquis vehicles. Ford issued a recall for the steering column for 2005 through 2011 mercury grand marquis cars. The recall was due to excessive corrosion of the steering column, which leads to loss of control of the vehicle while driving. Ford has not recalled 2003 and 2004 mercury grand marquis despite these vehicles having the same steering column. The memphis police detective closed the case last week and this was before i discovered the steering column recall. I have called the detective multiple times, and he is not returning my calls. This matter needs immediate attention.

I was driving down an interstate freeway at 65mph and came to a curve, the steering was very tight and was unable to keep the car in my lane.luckily there was no one next to me at the time.from that time on the steering kept getting tighter and tighter.i had to use bodily force to physically turn the steering wheel.i took the car to an auto repair shop and the issue was diagnosed as a faulty steering shaft joints.i had to have the lower steering shaft replaced.i was informed that 2005- 2011 mercury grand marquis were recalled for this issue.as of writing this 2004 grand marquis are not included.this is a major safety issue and should be looked into further.i believe ford/mercury should be responsible for the cost of this repair.

The power steering did not feel right to me so i took it to triangle service center, 177 boston rd, chelmsford.they inspected the power steering system and the intermediate (lower) shaft was binding and needed replacement.however, because of the ford recall for 2005-2011 ford vehicles, i can not get parts.i called fordand went to the drum hill dealership in lowell but since the 2004 mercury grand marquis are not in the recall, i have no recourse.this is the same part that nhtsa investigated and called for a recall on the 2005-2011 ford vehicles.i believe the 2004 vehicles should be included in the recall as it is the same part in the power steering shaft that has failed in the 2004 that fails in the 2005-2011 models.

I went to drive my car from my home parking space and when tried to turn the wheel it wouldn't turn. I tried again and got the steering wheel to turn some amount but it was pretty hard to do. As i turned the wheel a little more it eased up a bit and then became hard again. Part of turning the wheel is quite hard and then part is a little more normal. The steering seems very bad and hard to control. I had no previous problems and have not sufferd any damage from driving. I was afraid something was lodged in the engine compartment so i checked and could see nothing out of the ordinary. I parked the car and drove my other car for the week. Something is physically wrong with the car steering and i feel it is unsafe to drive on any road. I'm afraid it will break while driving. The car is not driven very much and is in pretty nice shape.

Steering was tight and as i turned the wheel, the steering became loose.i took the vehicle to my mechanic and he told me that the steering shaft assembly had to be replaced because of rust.he also told me that i was close to having a full steering collapse. I now know that this was a recall item on the 2005 - 2011 mercury grand marquis.why wasn't the 2004 vehicle included?

Very hard to turn steering wheel. Vehicle has been sitting in my driveway for the last 2 months as its unsafe to drive with my children.

Hard to steer, then a binding, more pressure needed to turn steering wheel. Then steering seemed to return to "normal". Noticed a large amount of corrosion on steering shaft u-joint.

I have had more problems with my 2004 grand marquis, the lights don't work, headlights go off while driving at night, airbags don't work, electrical, seats, steering, brakes, all of the electrical, catalytic convertor keeps going out, also engine problems, among many other things. I was in an accident, where my steering didn't work properly and i was hit by someone, not my fault, but my car ended up spinning so bad that i hit my head off of the steering and received injuries,,party in other car was not injured.i was also driving at night on the highway and my lights went out, i was hit from behind.. But also, because of my headlights and steering this has been happening, air bags, never deploy... Received some serious injuries, banged my knew also very badly.

When i turn the car let right while traveling at any speed the steering does not return to the center postition. The steering seems to get hung up on various points left or right slow or fast. The steering knuckle looks rusted.

The vehicle was being hard to steer and turn - told it to the dealer and was declared unsafe to be on road. Had to get the steering column changed to the turn of $679.00 - still have defective part and receipt for the work that was done.

I notice small paint peeling at first around back window then since have sever paint issues on both sides of car near rear window going to roof . Also other points on car body paint peeling not staying to car surface . This car has now only 44000 and has been rarely used and mostly garaged . It was a gift from my parents whom are now passed away. I am at this point in disbelief because i only use this car mostly in summer . I am disabled and a us coast guard veteran and feel this is an issue from improper paint application or metal preparation form day of build . Recall needed a.s.a.p.

I am not happy with the way ford is handling this recall notice 15s39/nhtsa. There seems to be a problem with the headlight control module.we where instructed, via letter from the ford company, to only notify my dealer if i am experiencing this headlight failure. Well, i did and it seems the ford dealership didn't even know there was a recall and not only that but could do nothing for me.this is a very serious situation and it seems they did not take me seriously.

The air condition on and spontaneously heat comes on. The dashboard gets extremely hot and can not stop the heat. Unable to turn off a/cor adjusting temperaturewill over idea the problem.we fear this could become a fire hazard so we'veparked the car waiting to hear from ford motors. This occurred while driving

Unintended acceleration: last year (feb 2009) my 2004 mercury grand marquis had an unintended acceleration which i (weight lifter) could barely control and i almost crashed into 2-cars. I also had to have the brakes replaced due to severe braking required to stop the car due to the unintended acceleration i used a reliable mechanic (highly rated by the state of ma) as the local ford dealer shops are over-priced and unreliable. No diagnostic codes showed-up at the shop after the problem, but i would not have my wife drive this car? the car is well maintained and i had a previous grand marquis, so i know the car better than most. Have you heard about this problem and is there a recall? ford was contacted on feb 23 2010, via their protal, and indicated that there was no problem or recall, and suggested that i go to their dealer (did not go as i have no need for bs). I informed my local mechanic that the car went into overdrive and i had to drive over the curb (brake to floor to stop it).l burned out the brakes but no one died. There was no diagnostic codes that showed a braking or other electronic problem.

Consumer stated thatwhile driving came to a red light and vehicle took off.the more he applied the brakes the fastervehicle went.he and his wife narrowly escaped acollision.consumer tookfeet off the brakes, and placed the vehicle in neutral, which causeditto slow down. Then,he coasted to the side of the road.consumer called the dealer, who told him to call atow truck. Consumerhad vehicle towed to thedealer.after inspectingthe vehicle dealer told consumer that theynever heard of this problem with this type of vehicle. However,he was told by another dealer that it might have been the cruise controlkicking in when it was not suppose to. Consumer was very concerned because he and his wife were nearly killed.

I own a 2004 mercury grand marquis ls that unexpectedly goes into unintended acceleration when slowing down or stopping vehicle. I never know when the unintended acceleration will occur. First noticed problem at about 24000 till now at 71000 miles. The problem occurs usually in a line of traffic as i am slowing down or slowing down to stopat a stop sign or traffic light. Or parking the vehicle. Suddenly the engine starts racing and sometimes the vehicle will jump forward rapidly (sudden unintended acceleration).i have to apply the brakes rapidly and with extreme pressure to keep the vehicle from hitting the vehicle in front of me or to keep from running a traffic light or stop sign. Most of the time when the engine racesand i apply the brakes the rear wheels will continue to spin at a high rate even to the point of causing the rubber on the tires to smoke and still try to push me forward. After applying the brakes i must turn off the engine using the key to stop the unintended acceleration. This is a serious safety problem. I noticed the problem not long after purchasing the car and reported it to the dealer dub herring ford in picayune, ms. While the car was still under warranty.they didn't do anything to check or fix the problem. They seemed not to worry or be concerned about this problem! i reported the problem several times to the dealer with no success. I then reported it to the ford motor company several times and they referred me to the dealer which didn't do anything to fix the problem to start with. I then took the car to an independent repair shop and they tried to find out from the dealer and ford co. If there was a recall or notation or fix for the problem. The independent shop said the dealersand ford co. Wouldn't give him any information concerning the problem. They asked me to contact ford motor co. And see if i could get any response for a fix or repair and got no help from them. I am lodging a formal complaint against ford and the dealer.

There was problem with the gear shift or transmission, shift lever moved forward and shifted into reverse without my touch.the vehicle gets hung-up in neutral.from drive or reverse into park there was a metal to metal interference evident.the gear would stick and required 2 to 3 minutes of jiggling back and forth with pressure to get into park, other times when in park and had the engine running, the key would shut down the engine, but could not removed without putting more pressure on the lever into park.on another occasion the vehicle drove backwards about 4 ft. Before the consumer could put his foot into the vehicle and onto the brake.this was an intermittent problem. *sc

Vehicle headlights work intermittently . Cruse control does not reset or turn on when supposed to. This is also an intermittent problem, sometimes resetting, and sometimes not. Headlights would sometimes not turn on when driving unless pulling turn signal arm toward steering wheel and holding. High beams only would work.

I was driving home with my wife and wipers came on in delay mode by themselves without me touching anything . I called my dealer and was told that they thought it was the wiper motor or the multi function switch . First i replaced multi function switch and the same issue wiper came on in delay mode . I then replaced the wiper motor and that worked until 3/19/14 while i took my car out for my 31st wedding anniversary with my wife we were driving to go to dinner and my wiper came on once again at this point i am so outraged at this because i just put new wiper blade on 2 days before and they just started going on in the same way as before in delay mode . I once again have to look into this wiper issue and i am sick to death nothing ever gets recalled or the cost taken by ford for the many issues with this car. There is now 44000 mile on a car i only use when it's nice out and this is just one more problem to deal with again .

During a rain storm windshield wipers stopped working.consumer had to pull off of the road.consumer was able to get them to work intermittently, and wished to have the manufacturer make the repairs . The vehicle was taken to the dealer but they were unable to duplicate the problem.

Windshield wipers on my 2004 mercury grand marquis began operating erratically two months after the vehicle was out of warranty. Initially they turned on by themselves and could not be turned off; a week later i could not turn them on at all except in the very high setting. Finally, 1-2 weeks later they wouldn't turn on at all. All of this erratic operation happened within a 3 to 4 week period seemingly at comparatively low temperatures (15 to 30 degrees fahrenheit). The dealer recommended replacing a switch on the steering column for $350, but this did not permanently solve the problem. Then they recommended replacing the windshield wiper motor for another $350. So far this approach seems to have alleviated the problem, but such an outlay 2 months out of warranty is inexcusable, without a recall and free repair, given fordsapparently generic problem with erratically operating wipers on their other products. Fortunately, i was not in any dangerous situations (snow or rain storms, etc.) where my immediately safety depended on the reliable operation of the wipers, but this is a potentially dangerous condition and an inexcusable cash outlay for consumers.

The steering wheel vibrates when driving at speeds of 58 mph and faster. The dealership has serviced the vehicle 5 times, in which they balanced the tires, rotate the tires and made an adjustment in the steering column. The problem still exist. The dealership also indicated that thesteering wheel meets factory specifications and the shake is minimum. *lathe dealer rotated and balanced the system but the shaking persisted.when the vehicle tires and wheels were replaced with cast aluminum the shaking was no longer felt.the consumer feels that the previous set of tires and wheels were defective.
