Driver was involved in an accident , dual airbags had a delayed deployment which caused driver to smash against windshield with head and even with seatbelts worn.
Vehicle rear ended another vehicle at about 20mph, and neither driver's side nor passenger's side airbags deployed. Dealer has vehicle currently.
Vehicle downshifted into passing gear while driving down a hill and vehicle accelerated. Brakes did not response, causing consumer to run into a bus and telephone pole. Also, dual airbags did not deploy.but, cover came off, resulting in a broken hip and pelvis. Prior to this accident consumer was complaining about transmission.but, dealer stated it was not important.
While driving at 65 mph air bag on the driver's side deployed for no apparent reason, hitting driver in the face.driver lost control ofvehicle, ran off the road, and hit a ditch. Vehicle was totalled.
The consumer was involved in a minor fender bender driving at 5 mph when the two front air bags deployed.contacted dealer.mr
After the consumer drove over a cattle guard the inertia switch activated causing the vehicle to come to a sudden stop.nlm
At night while driving headlights and dashboard lights went out on freeway and could not be turned on again. Has happened on two occasions and vehicle cannot be driven and unsafe.
Problem:intermittent headlight failure while driving at night with 1999 (1998 year of manufacture) mercury grand marquis.lights go off for as long as 2-3 seconds and come back on again for a second or two, then go off again, then back on again, etc--and only occurs after the vehicle has been driven for 20-30 minutes.this happened once before, about two years ago, with this very same vehicle and i solved the problem by replacing the headlight switch on the dash. Apparently there is no headlight-related recall* for this particular mercury and the cost to dig deeper into the cause of this problem by the mercury dealership will be therefore at my expense.the cheapest repair cost scenario at the dealership is over $300. This problem should not have occurred under any circumstances in the first instance, not to mention now the second time.*see:nhtsc recall # 99v103 mercury mystique (1998 year of manufacture).
Vehicle was parked. I went to turn my headlights on. No headlights, turn signals, dash lights, hazard flashers or dome light. The 2003-2005 models were recalled for this same thing with the lcm failing. Please look into this as this is a serious safety issue.
The 3/4 key on the driver side door randomly quit working. Every other button still works, and when any button other than the 3/4 key is pressed, the keypad lights up. My key code includes the 3/4 key though, so i cannot use this keypad to unlock my vehicle or trunk.however the keypad lights up on its own, which causes my exterior and interior lights to illuminate.these lights cycle on for about 15 seconds and turn off for about 30 seconds.i had to remove my interior dome lights because they would drain the battery. If i am parking for an extended period of time, i have to disconnect my battery so the lights will not drain it. The ford dealer checked for a recall on the lcm, but the recall does not affect the 1999 model.

1999 mercury grand marquis.consumer writes in regards to defective alternator.the consumer stated on may 29, 2012, he purchased a re-built alternator from a local parts store and installed it himself.the alternator failed on july 16, 2012, while in a parking lot. The consumer stated the started solenoid clicked, but the engine would not turn over.after getting a jump, the vehicle would run for about 30 seconds after the cable was disconnected. The consumer returned the alternator to the parts store to have it tested, in which it did fail.the consumer purchased another alternator and once it was installed, the vehicle ran for only 30 seconds after the jumper cables were disconnected, as the previous alternator. The consumer then purchased a voltage meter and the alternator was putting out 11 volts, instead of 14 volts, which was normal.
The horn button does not respond due toitslocation, where it' s placed. Its association is too close to whereair bag is located on steering wheel.the driver had to press the horn hard repeatdly.
Driver can not apply the horn without taking her hands off the steering wheel, and when she does, excessive pressure is needed in order for it to work. Dealer says it's normal.
While driving at any rate of speedvehicle will completely shutdown without warning, cause unknown. Please give any further details.
Consumer stated that the key will not turn in the ignition, the serring wheel locks up and has to be jerked before the key can be tuned.
Consumer stated that the key will not turn in the ignition, the serring wheel locks up and has to be jerked before the key can be tuned.
When trying to put the key into ignitionsteering wheel locked up, andkey was not able to be turned. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything.
Consumer was parking, turned vehicle off, and then decided to park elsewhere.consumer tried to start vehicle, it would not start. Then consumer saw smoke coming from hood, then flames.called 911 for help.there were no injuries.
Dt:car is having a problem with the number 15 fuse. This fuse is responsible for the dashboard, interior lights, door locks, temp control, has been replaced 5x. Dealer reportscant find problem. Dealer reports there is no repair for vehicle. No other problems with vehicle. Owners main concern is that you cant see the speed when driving, especially at night.
Steering is very hard to control, it goes where bumps and dips take you. Car will jump all over the road. Steeringhas constant pull to leftwith lotsnoise. Also steel to steel slamming noise. Steering colum inside car moves. Dealerslook make some adjustments, say found no problem. But problems continue. I returned for repeat preformance. Veryrough ridefront and rear . Electricalproblems surfacing, lights flickering, dash, dome headlights etc., engine cut out as if i turned it off and then came back oneach time ihave been sitting still, talk about a dangerousdriving situation! again the dealer checks it out finds no problemsays they cant always find a problem until it happens and they have the carwhen the problem occurs. Alot of good thats going todo driving down the highway at 60mph with 5 kids in the car!!! the air conditioningdoesn't cool wellat first they said no problem the weather got very hot ,they set an appointment. They foundlow pressurereplacedlow prssure clutch switch.i took the car inagain for poor front end and steering control now adding to the list aloud slamming together of 2 pieces of steel coming from the left front tire areaeither going over bumps or dips i can't tell which because it happens randomly. The solution, the dealer checks the right side! so the car goes back again .
Plastic intake manifold on 4.6 liter engine found to be cracked and leaking coolant. The loss of coolant results in the vehicle becoming disabled and/or unsafe to drive. Leaking coolant is also toxic to children and animals, as they are more likely to be in contact with coolant on the ground or garage floor. This defective part (plastic intake manifold) was identified by ford motor company as defective and quietly settled in a class action lawsuit. Replacement parts have been redesigned. However, ford did not contact customers with this model car to notify them of the defective part or to offer resolution. Earlier models of this engine (and all other engines) used a metal intake manifold. These were not problematic. Intake manifolds are not a moving part of the vehicle engine, and are not subject to ware. The plastic material used in the problem manifolds are not able to withstand the normal temperature fluctuations of a vehicle engine and are therefore prone to failure.ford has been contacted in an attempt to resolve this issue, but the company has declined to offer any resolution whatsoever.
Driving on the hwy and the car started to overheat with hot steam shooting out from the engine and it also had a strong coolant smell. The car could not be driven until l it had $1,500 in repairs for a known, leaking plastic manifold issue. This failed part cracks and leaks into the hot engine area. And, ford had redesigned the failed part.additionally, ford had once offered free fixes for a few months for police cars and taxi cabs with the same engines under a class action law suit but didn't tell the owners about. Thousands of consumers were ripped off because ford should have fixed this issue under the class action recall. But they didn't bother notify anyone about the three month recall window.in checking the nhtsa records, there are thousands of us with the same reported problem. Please take some corrective action for us.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury grand marquis. While the vehicle was parked with the engine running, the contact shifted into reverse and noticed steam coming from the hood. The vehicle was then shifted back into park and turned off the engine. Upon opening the hood, the contact noticed that a part of the manifold was missing the thermostat. The contact was unsure of any warning indicators illuminating. The contact went to bill macdonald ford (1200 s carney dr, st clair, mi 48079, (810) 329-6601) and was informed there were no recalls. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

Plastic intake manifoldfailed, antifreeze leaking from around thermostat due to this failure and leaking into coil packs and causing major misfire in motor.happened suddenly, no indication of leak prior to this failure.was driving when this happened and had to call for help to get vehicle back home, and now can't drive it .cost to fix is expensive, and the car ran great until this happened.sounded like i has thrown a rod, popping louder on exceleration, so i immediately parked it and turned off the motor.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated that water was leaking from under the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the contact was advised that the intake manifold would have to be replaced because it was fractured. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 114,000.
On the 1999 mercury grand marquis ls 4.6 l v8 the original plastic intake manifold cracked and busted wide open causing all the coolant / antifreeze to pour out. From what i gather there was a recall on this years ago and they made a different intake manifold which was aluminum for the part that the thermostat goes into and the rest of it was plastic. If this isn't caught in time and all the fluid leaks out it will completely destroying your engine also. Mine cracked while it was in park just running.
I noticed coolant leaking from somewhere in the engine compartment, but initially had trouble finding where the leak was coming from.i finally discovered that the intake manifold was cracked at the plastic thermostat housing.
Complete cracking of plastic intake manifold causing completer loss of coolant and $1400 repair with the new replacement metal manifold.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury grand marquis. He could not accelerate past 30-35 mph. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing.the technician stated that the failure was because of a plastic intake manifold.the vehicle was repaired with the replacements of a metal intake manifold and spark plugs.the following day after the service repair, he experienced rough idling while starting the engine cold. The authorized dealer was notified of the failure, but no remedy was available.the failure mileage was 54,300.the current mileage wasunavailable.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury grand marquis.the contact stated that the vehicle would stall sporadically and without warning. A local mechanic diagnosed that the intake manifold would need to be replaced.the dealer was contacted, but denied any assistance with repairs to the defect.the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 90,200 and the current mileage was 91,000.
Cracked intake manifold on a 1999 mercury grand marquis with only 52000 miles on it.cost $1200 to repair. Was not notified of recall. 52000 miles is only about 4.3 years of actual use. It is unfair that low mileage drivers should be punished for conserving energy.
While driving, (at any speed)the car's engine shut down several times. Each time i heard a "beep" and warning lights came on- check engine, traction control and abs. After a minute or so, the engine would start normally. The engine shut down 6 times ! each time i heard the "beep" and warning lights illuminated including traction control and check engine lights. I was on my way home with my newborn in the car,it just cuts off,and it nearly caused an accident on the highway as many other cars almost ran into me because the car shut off while i was driving on the highway.this is a very dangerous condition, especially as power steering and power brakes are lost on shut-down. I am literally afraid of driving my vehicle as no one knows what is wrong with my vehicle. This needs to be addressed asap as someone could get seriously hurt or killed. Including children!....by the way, this has been happening all week.
My car was in drive at a business traffic intersection drive way on a slight hill with the brakes on when the engine surged and the car started to reverse while still in drive. I had to put considerable pressure on the brakes to stop it. I checked and the shift lever was still in drive. My car has been properly maintained and was recently serviced with all required services done. This really scared me and i would have crashed into a car if it was behind me. Ford should look into this safety problem.
Vehicle would shake violently at any speed from 45-80mph. Took to a mechanic said the front end needed to be replaced. $800.00 later it still did it, then took back said the tires needed to be replaced although we had 80,000 mile tires, and only had 35,000 miles put on them. Replaced the tires for $600.00. Still shook, took to a different mechanic said it was the transmission failing. During scheduled maintenance found cracked intake manifold, antifreeze and oil in spark plugs, cleaned out changed spark plugs, ran fine until the manifold leaked more coolant into the spark plugs and now we are at square one. Researched online found a bunch of places saying it was recalled, when i called the dealership they said no recalls. Price of replacing the part was $615.00 if i had one alternator, or $650.00 if i had another.
We never received notification of the manifold defect and recently discovered that there was a recall.our car is a 1999 grand marquis with cracked manifold intake.we took it to the local dealer and they said that they cannot do any warranty adjustments since the deadline was exhausted.we called summer of 2009 to let them be aware of this problem.though they were nice, they were still firm on denying us repair or adjustments under the law suit and recall.now what do we do since we never received notification nor were we aware of any problem with the car?
Cracking plastic intake manifold on mercury v-8car over heats due to water/coolant leakinglooking into getting fixed.
I had to fix the leak 3 times. Finally, my mechanic noticed the crack on the intake manifold. It is made of hard plastic! what in the world anyone would design such part in plastic? how can such material sustain extreme heat for long periods of time. I purchased new one and it is plastic again with a little improvement. But it is mostly plastic again. I believe this is service scam. You make parts to only last 4 years and make money from selling auto parts. The dealership person sold me the parts stated that he had sold 6 of them last week alone and he has it in stock all the time. You know the problem but failed to inform consumers. I want a satisfactory answer before buying another american car.
I have a 1999 mercury grand marquis. The plastic intake manifold cracked. I have learn that this is a problem alot of people have with the ford vehicles.
Cracked the air intake on my 1999 mercury grand marquis. It was made out of cheap plastic. I had to step on the throttle to get out of the way, and my car started steaming. Come to find out, the intake manifold cracked. It's only $300 for the part, not including labor.

Vehicle's passenger side front tire blew out and while changing the tire the jack collapsed.*mrthe jack the consumer was new since this was the first time the vehicle ever had a flat tire.the consumer took the jack to the local dealer who offered to order a new one which would have to be paid for.the consumer refused the offer especially since the replacement was the same as the one that collapsed.the consumer believes the jack is not sufficient to raise the vehicle.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated that while changing a flat tire with the factory jack, the jack bent and caused the vehicle to fall off the jack. The contact was able to change the tire and then called the manufacture. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was outside of warranty so there was nothing they could do to assist. The jack was not replaced. The failure mileage was 81,000.

The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
My headlights, hazards, and turn signals all just randomly went out while driving.they have not come back on since.after reading forums i believe it to be the lcm but my year model is not included in the recall.i believe this issue dates back farther than 2000 and ford should step up and recall more of these lcm components.

We own three mercury grand marquis, love the cars however all three( 2000, 1999 and second 1999 all intemitantly loose headlights when high beams are on. If i quickly go to low beams i can see again...its like they are overheating with the amp draw of high beams and circuit breaks. This is way too common to be ok. It dangerous especially if one gets rattled with complete darkness at night and high speed. Bumps also seam to slightly affect it sometimes. This happens any time the gray 99 has high beams on for about 45mins. Only 10-15mins on blue 1999 and 2000 not as frequent yet but only has about 75k miles, where as the 1999 are 150-210 respectively. Started 5 years ago on my first and i just did not use high beam since i purchase second 1999 to replace first and had title issues so bought the 3rd 2000 and found they all have the same flaw!! my cell [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

1999 mercury grand marquis ls 4.6l(1) drove vehicle in a normal way, commuting from home to work daily. No speeding. In the mornings properly wait for 10 minutes to warm up the vehicle's engine prior to driving. Kept proper maintenance schedule by ford/mercury dealership. Never brought up to my attention of the possible default this part may cause down the line. Had a complete coolant flush for radiator. Replaced with new coolant.(2) misfire in cylinders 6 + 2. Check engine light on. Small amounts of coolant leakage onto top part of engine, profusely around the spark plug chambers. Coolant come in contact with alternator affecting check battery light to go on. Vehicle showed signs of intense shaking at idle and at normal driving conditions within 1 hr after check engine light came on. Vehicle is a 199 mercury grand marquis ls 4.6l. Vehicle could not be driven w/o being extremely shaky while driving. Hesitation present. On cold days, small presence of coolant traces were found inside the spark-plug pits along side the ignition coils and at times small vapor came from inside the engine noticed from inside the driver's seat coming from inside the hood causing concern. I found the following from the following ford parts website: http://www.1aauto.com/1a/intakemanifolds/-/-/1aeim00012."the original intake manifold, due to the design, has an abnormal tendency to crack, leading to overheating and in many cases complete engine failure and/or damage to other parts of the car's engine. This new and improved intake manifold is designed to eliminate those problems!".(3) dealership charged me over $1500.00 for replacing the intake manifold, spark plug and ignition coil for cylinder #2 plus an oil change and filter. I requested old parts back and only the spark-plug and ignition coil was returned to me.

Poor gas mileage
During normal operation of my car, the check engine light came on and stayed on. I had the engine light codes read and it indicated that two cylinders were misfiring.i took the car to a service shop to have the spark plugs changed.i was told that the intake manifold had developed a crack which was allowing coolant fluid inside the manifold cavity and this is what was causing the cylinder misfire.the car is a 1999 mercury grand marquis with a 4.6 ltr. Engine. The intake manifold is made of a plastic material and tends to crack next to the thermostat housing.this is exactly where the intake manifold on my car cracked. I have since found out that the ford motor co. Issued a recall bulletin to their ford and lincoln mercury dealers in december 2001 advising them of the defect.subsequently, certain favored fleet owners of mercury marquis and ford crown victoria automobiles (police, limo and taxi companies) were notified of the recall."civilian" owners were excluded.i owned my mercury grand marquis at that time and was not notified of the recall.my exclusion from the recall notification resulted in my being exposed to the potential fire hazard of the cracked intake manifold, as well as the inconvenience and considerable expense of having to have the defective manifold replaced. Because of the selective recall that ford motor co. Made regarding defective intake manifold, a class action lawsuit was filed against ford motor co. On behalf of excluded owners and ford motor co. Had to make restitution to such owners.i was not a party to the lawsuit because i was not made aware of my status as a wronged owner.i would like to know why the nhtsb did not require that ford motor co. Notify me about the recall to replace the dangerous defective intake manifold on my car?

The auto produced an uncontrollable skid while braking on a wet road and proceeding around a ramp.rather than proceed left while turning on the ramp requiring only a minor negotiation of a slight hilled and curved road, it proceeded into a right diagonal turn into the guard rail and would have plunged into the adjacent ditch absent the rail.it then bounced off the rail and rather than proceed straight as the steering wheel directed it with a slight turn of the wheel, it took a sharp left diagonally proceeding straight towards the median strip of oncoming traffic less than an approximate 1/4 of a mile away.it suddenly took a straight path after veering within 1/2 yard of the guard rail separating it from the median strip.it had been directed to go straight by the steering wheel much earlier before leaving the ramp.the car performed like an uncontrollable roller coaster off of its tracks.

Brake problems with the 1999 mercury grand marquis.*mr dealer was notified.
I was coming to a stop when the brake pedal started vibrating and going lower and lower to the floor and the car did not stop resulting in an accident.i was told by the ford mechanic that the computer tests did not show any problem with the antilock system but i think there is a problem when you apply your brakes and the car does not stop.i have also talked to a number of people some of them who work on cars etc..and found out that this is not an uncommon problem. Furthermore, it happens a lot and on all types of vehicles with antilock systems.i was told that this can happen on and off which is why it is hard to detect.i was lucky in the fact that i was going slow and nobody was hurt, but what if that had been a different ending and it had been a serious accident? i have never been in an accident before and i resent the fact that i was not at fault for this one, the brakes did not work!!!!!
When brakes were applied pedal became hard, resulting in extended stopping distance which caused a collision. Dealer was inspectingvehicle.

Front disc brakes squeaked and squealed excessively since the original purchase of the vehicle.returned vehicle several times to dealer to correct problem.dealer replaced front pads and turned rotors.replacement pads were ford motorcraft pads.braking power was noticeably reduced immediately after the ford motorcraft pads were installed.after another trip to the dealer, ford oem pads were installed.braking power was restored to normal (original) levels, and the squeaking / squealing was gone.my concern is that ford motorcraft parts are not the equivalent to the oem parts, and that dealers throughout the country are being shipped, and instructed to use ford motorcraft disc pads which clearly are creating a dangerous condition.mr

I have been having problems with 'dead' spot in my steering, causing me to oversteer. I took the car to a goodyear service where they adjusted some part on the gear box. This helped, but continued to oversteer the vehicle. I returned to the shop again and purchased four (4) new tires, aligned the front end all all four wheels. Again the adjusted the gear box due to my complaint. I drove over to sarasota where i was not satisfied with the way the car was steering and i returned to another goodyear store where i was advised the gear box is 'condemned' and has to be replaced. My car now 'wanders' all over the road and i must fight to control the vehicle in a straight line. I have owned many cars over the years and have talked to several mechanics who advised me that this is not common and must be a defective gear box installed on the vehicle. I feel mercury should replace the gear box at their expense, not mine as this is a safety feature that should not occur.mr

Backing up the tie rodfell down, steering impossible
While driving 30 mph front driver's side tie rod fell off. As a result, the steering wheel was unable to turn in either direction. The cause has yet to be determined. The original tie rod end was assembled with no grease and could not be greased.
The consumer took the vehicle in for an oil change and the mechanic stated that the left tie rod needed to be replaced because there was too much play in the tie rod. *nlm
While parking at a low speed, the front right tie rodfell off. The consumer had the vehicle towed. The dealership repaired the tie rod....other tie rod on left side was about to fall off and the other two were badly worn. No place to grease, so it mudt be life time.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury grand marquis.while backing out of the driveway at 1 mph, the outer left front tie rod detached.no prior work was done to the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the outer tie rod end detached due to lack of grease.the dealer replaced two inner and outer tie rod ends and two adjuster sleeves.the engine size was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 103,000.the consumer stated the tie rod was worn out from the inside due to lack of grease. Updadated 06/08/07.
Front outer tie rod froze, causingdriver to lose control ofvehicle. Dealer indicated rods were replaced atowner's expense.the steering wheel became rubbery before the tie rod froze, and was hard to control.four weeks later, the lower ball joints failed.
When the auto is put in gear, all the door locks are activated (anti-carjacking system?). When the car is stpped, the passengers in the rear seat are not able to open the doors from inside even though the childproof lock has been disengaged. Passengers are trapped inside the car and the only way they can open the doors is by unlocking them via the power lock in the front doors. Local mercury service dept appears to think this is normal. Told me that evry single 99 grand marquis in the lot behaves the same way. Also i have friends with the same problem in their lincoln. Suppose the driver is unconscious, how do the passengers get out?
Both driver's / passenger's doors would close onoccupants' legs while enteringvehicle.dealer notified, and informed consumer nothing could be done. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
Hinges on both frontdoors will not stay in the first open position. If on a slight incline doors will automatically close on your legs as you try to exit. Dealer claims that ford will not do anything about this.this does not sound reasonable to me. I am elderly and have to have the door hold open in the first position. My wife and i have both had the doors close on our legs.
Door hinges on both front doors do not hold open if car is parked on a slight incline.this is dangerous as i am elderly and have a tendency to lift my legs out first, and ahve had the door close on my legs. This is my third grand marquis and this have never happened before. I feel that mercury has changed the hinges on the doors to a less expensive hinge.
On jan. 25, 2006 i stopped at a rest area to put windshield washer fluid in my car.the hydraulics on the hood failed, causing the hood to slam shut on my arm.the hood latched and the latch was jammed due to my arm being caught under the hood. Two odot workers finally came to help me.they could not open the hood by using the hood release in the car, nor by using the release under the hood.they had to pry open the hood, for me to pull my arm out. My arm was pinned for 20 minutes.i have been left with a permanent disability in my right arm and hand. I am in constant excrutiating pain which i will have to live with for the rest of my life.
At 12000 miles discovered that left body mount bolt was loose. Consumer retightened bolt. Vehicle began driving improperly. Consumer checked and noticed that right body mount bolt had snapped.consumer very concerned because bolts hold body of vehicle to subframe, and a broken bolt increases pressure on the remaining ones, possibly resulting in an accident while driving.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated that the ball joints were replaced but the bolt that held it in place was loose and caused the carter key to fail to hold the bolt in place. As a result, the bolt neck detached while the contact was driving approximately 20 mph and caused the vehicle to stop abruptly. As a result, the contact's head hit the steering wheel.the contact suffered a whip lash that required a medical attention. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired by the contact who was an independent mechanic. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

Tire photos available at these links: www.watsonline.org/tire1.jpg and www.watsonline.org/tire2.jpg. Warranty claim submitted to goodyear on or shortly after sept. 27, 2000 by servicing dealer (signature lincoln/mercury, lafayette la 70503). No response from dealer or goodyear to date (jan 11, 2001), despite numerous phone calls. As you can see from the photos the failure of the tire was catastrophic. The tire was low mileage and maintained properly. There were no road hazards. There are 5 passengers who can attest to these facts. A la state trooper who arrived on the scene immediately after the incident (and changed the tire himself- nice man!) identified the damage as being consistent with firestone tire failures. In fact, he first demanded to know if it was a firestone tire. The tire tread was preserved in one piece and there is no evidence of puncture or cut anywhere on it. We were very fortunate indeed that this did not result in a serious crash and/or fatality. This incident happened in the left lane of i-110 in baton rouge la in the midst of 3-lane, fairly heavy 60 mph traffic. By the way, the vehicle, a mercury grand marquis, performed admirably. We were able to keep the vehicle under control and cross all lanes to the shoulder without much effort. The vehicle handled extremely well. (tiresize: p225/60r16)( dot number:tire size: p225/60r16 )

The vehicle then bounced off the rail and rather than proceed straight as the steering wheel directed it with a slight left turn of the wheel, it took a sharp left diagonally proceeding straight towards the median strip of oncoming traffic less than approximately 1/4 of a mile away.
