Car towed all three times.problem documented in ford service bullitin 12950.problem occured 3 times:november 2003october 2004november 2004.

While parked smoke came from under the hood.the fire department opended the hood and the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified.

After replacing several components of the electrical system including pcm, two power packs and a wire harness installed andthe vehicle still does not start.

Wiring harness under the hood resulting in a fire.

While driving at night on the highway at 65 mph toxic black smoke and a loud clicking sound suddenly appeared from the center console. I steered the vehicle off the road and shut the vehicle down appx.10 min. On restart the vehicle smoke & clicking sound ceased. Dealer removed radio and glove compartment but could not detect root cause of the incident. No corrective action conducted. Consumer required to pay all costs related to incident.

While driving on the highway at 65 mph, black toxic smoke suddenly started bellowing out from around the radio area in the center dashboard. A loud rapid clicking sound was also heard.upon realizing what was going on, i steered the car safely off the highway ramp and shut the vehicle off. I inspected the engine under the hood and found nothing wrong.upon a 15 min shutdown i restarted the engine and both the smoke and clicking sound had ceased so i drove the car to the dealer. On 28 dec 00 the mercury dealer only removed the radio and glovebox and noted nothing abnormal. As a consumer i am not satisfied, this is a safety concern that needs to be addressed.

I observed a coolant leak around the thermostat. I found the plastic intake manifold to be cracked around the thermostat and leaking coolant. I made contact with mercury and found that there had been a recall on the plastic intake manifold in which they would have replaced the part at no charge during the safety recall campaign. I was not made aware of the safety recall and have owned the vehicle since 04/17/02 when i purchased the vehicle used from a mercury dealership. The dealership would no longer honor this recall although there are still thousands upon thousands of these engines still on the road. The all plastic manifold was replaced with an intake manifold with an aluminum crossover channel for the coolant. I was forced to replace this defective part out-of-pocket at a cost of $800. It would have been more had i not been friends with the mechanic. The vehicle had 102,281 miles at the time of the failure.

The contact owns a 1998 mercury grand marquis. While driving various speeds, the engine misfired and hesitated to respond. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the plastic intake manifold was cracked, which caused anti freeze to leak out and damage the engine coils. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

Vehicle started to buck and when i pulled my vehicle over i lifted the hood. I found anti-freeze flowing on the top of my engine.i had it towed to my local garage & they told me that the intake manifold is cracked. I did some research and found out there's a recall on this part. When i called my local ford dealer, they told me there is a recall on this part, but it's only for police and fleet vehicles only.now that this was said to me, i was told by my garage it would cost me $1000 to fix. Something i don't have. Ford was not very cooperative about my situation and i'm very disappointed.

Dt:the caller said her car burned up in 2000.now she is finding out about the investigation into the cruise control fires.she believes that the car should be included.at the time she was told to call the insurance company, they said to call manufacturer, and she was getting the run around.she saw on cnn and the newspaper about the current problem they are having and wanted someone to help her.there is a fire report.the vehicle fire was contained to the engine compartment and dash area. *sc

The contact owns a 1998 mercury grand marquis. The contact stated that the vehicle would overheat abnormally. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the radiator was flushed but to no avail. The contact later inspected the vehicle and discovered that the intake manifold was fractured. The contact believed that the failure was caused because the intake manifold was designed using plastic. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 64,950.

1998 grand marquis overheated and manifold was leaking.

Intermittently while driving at highwayspeed vehicle stalled.this caused the loss of steering and the brakes. Vehicle was towed to the dealership, they charged $750.00, andproblem recurred.

Consumer was experiencing problems with the cooling system but wasn't included in the recall.*phthe consumer had to anti-freeze to the vehicle on a continuous basis.the consumer was then informed there was a defect with the 4.6l v8 engines. The manufacturer used carbon fiber intake manifolds on the engines.due to the heat, the carbon fiber intake would crack which caused a lost of coolant. The consumer told there was a recall, but on;y for police vehicle's.

Plastic intake manifold cracked and leaking coolant around thermostat area that squirts out under driving conditions and pools around fuel injectionand contaminates electronics and serpentine belt and pulleys. Could leak to overheating and engine failure . Poor driving condition.

The plastic intake manifold in my 1998 grand marquis has cracked resulting in engine coolant fluid leak and engine failure. It is being repaired today. The car has approximately 87,000 miles. I understand that this occurs because of the material used for the intake manifold. The car is in otherwise very good condition.

On three separate occasions the vehicle has stalled while driving on the highway.each time this happened the vehicle could not be restarted and had to be towed to the nearest garage.the dealer informed the consumer that service bulletin 12950 as issued in 1999 identifying a fix for this problem.since the consumer's vehicle was no longer under warranty he was forced to pay for the repair.

Serpentine fan belt & idler pulley / tensioner replaced due to noise.

While driving vehicle stalled.consumer used a starter battery kit to restart the vehicle or contacted aaa to have the vehicle towed. The contact owns a 1998 mercury grand marquis. Whenever the contact turned the vehicle on he noticed that the check engine light would appear on the dashboard. While examining the engine he also noticed that anti-freeze was leaking onto the engine. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The failure mileage was 100,000.

While drivingvehicle would stall for no reason. If at a stop sign/light & idling, would shut itself down. Been to dealer twice for stalling & mechanic cannot locate cause of problem. Its an intermittent problem.

Ltr fm louis hettinger(ky) owner of a 1998 mercury grand marquis 4-door vehicle question if vehicleshould be recalled because of fast idle. *mr the iac valve was replaced on the vehicle but did not help the problem.the service dealer stated that there was nothing else they could do to resolve the issue.there were other consumers who experienced the same problem.(there was a fast idle upon start up and the vehicle would slow down at short notice.when the problem occurred, there was no way to control the vehicle) *scc

While traveling the vehicle stall out without indications. Manufacturerhas ben contacted. Please provide further details.

Consumer was leasing a vehicle that experienced engine stalling problems, consumer ended up losing money to get out of the lease to get into a safer vehicle.

While driving up a hill shifting into second gear, and when movingpawl back to drive, it won't be able to do so.also, engine will stall, and there will be no power steering or brakes. Then, shiftingto neutral and moving vehicle so that itcould start working again.

While driving at 50mph on flat surface and with no warning vehicle shut off. Consumer had to pull over. While drivingabout 25 mph passed over rubbler bars andengine check light came on. Upon passing a farmer's trailer, crossed over a railroad onto on coming traffic, the vehicle shut down, causing the consumer to coast off the road.this was the fifth time that the vehicle has shut down, and the consumer had to reset the switch to get the vehicle to start, and lost power steering.

Serpentine fan belt & idler pulley / tensioner replaced due to noise.

When driving a long distance 500-600 miles per day the bottom of the truck got very hot. Seems exhaust system is too close. Dealer contacted and is not aware of the problem.

Faliure has not happened yet but has the potential with all of the other 1998 mercury grand marquis.plastic intake manifolds are defective from ford and cause coolant loss.this can cause engine damage and possible engine failure.recall applying to fleet vehicles should apply to private use vehicles as well.average repair costs between 700-1000 dollars.

Problems with intake manifold being cracked. *mr the consumer felt that the same recalls for the crown victoria's and thunderbird's should also apply to the mercury grand marquis because they were manufactured by the same company.the intake manifold cracked and was replaced.the consumer requested reimbursement for the monies spent for repair. *sc

1) normal driving usage;2) plastic intake manifold cracked, overheating car;3) part will have to be replaced $590 from ford motor company.

1.check engine light came on and remained on constantly.2.light began to blink for a while then remain on again.thecar suddenly killed in a very dangerous situation (while in the middle lane of interstatetraffic with no shoulder)3.problem was determined to be the intake manifold.we were advised that this part breaks often and in fact a recall was issued but only on police cars!the average consumer is left to fend for themselves for this expensive part.a piece of plastic costing upwards of $500 only for the part.upon replacement we were told by our mechanic that this has been a problem part in these vehicles; and when the part was received it was discovered that ford had changed the construction to include metal( in the area that usually breaks) in what was previously an all plastic part.we do not have the old part, and i don't suspect that the mechanic kept it either.

The contact owns a 1998 mercury grand marquis.after driving 65 mph, the contact noticed fuel leaking from the vehicle.she stated that the intake manifold cracked and she took the vehicle to the ford dealer.the dealer informed her that there was a recall on her vehicle, but they would not honor it because it was only good for seven years.she took the vehicle to an independent dealer and paid $850 for the repair.the vin and engine size were unknown.the current and failure mileages were 113,000.updated 12/12/2007 the consumer stated the intake manifold was a defect that ford refused to pay for the repairs. The consumer stated would like to be reimbursed for repairs. Updated 12/12/07

Your form is a little difficult to complete for a complaint of this nature.the problem lies with the floor mats.they are so light weight that they tend to shift when one enters or departs the vehicle. They also shift when the vehicle is in motion, due to the movement of the foot between the brakes and the gas. Even the retention post for the drivers floor mat fails to keep it in place.it tends to rotate to the right and move forward toward the pedals.this is a problem that could cause an accident if the floor mat were to jam either the brake or gas pedal. Thank you for your time.

While driving the air conditioner failed and then the vehicle shut down.driver was able to restart vehicle after approximately 10 minutes.the next morning, a tow truck driver cranked the vehicle and drove it onto the tow truck.before the vehicle was secured to the tow truck, it began to smoke from under the engine area and suddenly it burst into flames.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 120,000. The vin was unavailable.

My 1998 mercury grand marquis headlights as well as tailights fail. During this all of a sudden while driving at night the headlights while driving will start flashing on and off, then just completely go off, as well as the lights on the doors and light around the dash controls such as (ac buttons an knobs) this happened rarely, but now it happened every single night. I googled this and many more are having the same problem, it seems as if its common in these vehicles. On the forums some say a light control box needs replacing, and then some say a headlight control module needs replacing. This needs to be investigated. A recall needs to be filed for the replacing of the bad part causing this issue. This can cause serious injury to someone if this happens on a dark windy road.

Low/high beam lights inoperative in park or drive, bulbs & wiring checks good, 25 amp fuse was blown, but replaced fuse caused no change.

While driving the car, the headlights goes out, than on, and out. This is unsafe for my wife driving with kids.

The lighting control module sounds like the signal switch is on all the time. Was informed by mechanic parts are on back order. Will notify owner when parts are available.

Whenheadlights are needed at night or in rainy weahter conditions headlights arevery dim, causing poor driver visibility. Also, note headlights look like fog is in the bulbs.consumer has replaced headlights;but, problem is still occurring. When the head light assembly was replaced, the problem seemed solved, but the plastic lense cover fogged up again.also the low beam lights appear brighter than high beam.

Headlight lens deteriorated and caused lights to project poorly when used. Dealer notified and refused to assist in this matter, asking nhtsa to look into this matter.

Was traveling about 60mph on a paved country road, when headlights went out without prior warning, dealership was aware of problem. Consumer stated lights flashed on and off several times, the lights were then turned off and turned back on againg, they flashed about 2 more times and then remained on.

The same condition happened on 12/99. I reported this to the service dept.at bill smith ford and they replaced a part that controled the high beams. It happened again 11/99 driving on hwy 85 at approx. The same area. Both times i was driving at night (11pm) with the high beams on when without any warning all the lights went off. I turned off the high beams and the lights came on. I believe that this is a serious problem that you should investigate. I have an appointment to have the car repaired.

Consumer states that the exterior of the headlights are fogging up, causing poor visibility.

The high beam indicator light is the same color as the rest of the light thus making it hard notice when high beam are on.

Light switch fails while lights are on high beam for one to two hours. Has happened four times while driving at 70 mpr on interstate 95.all interior and exterior lights blink off, then back on, then off several times before pulling to side of road... Has not happened while using low beams. Strikes fear in me and family each time it happens... I understand it common to my yr and make...what to do??

Upon an early morning start consumer noticedfumes/odor within the passenger's compartment.also, the problem occurred when the heater was being used. Consumercontacted the dealer, dealer was unable to determine the cause..et.

While driving fuel pump failed and vehicle stalled.

Was traveling down a ramp at 20-30 mph when the vehicle cut off for no reason. Had no warning. Had no control of vehicle. Police officer noticed fuel injection switch in trunk of vehicle & punched it to restart vehicle.

Fuel gauge hung on full.

The consumer has been experiencing problems withfuel tank assembly.vehicle makes a clunking sound due to piece that is broken in the fuel tank.the manufacturer has been contacted.

Fuel tank developed a crack, causing fuel to leakalmost directly above the exhaust pipe . Dealer replaced fuel tank 3 times, defect is still occurring. Crack is always leaking in the same location. *ml

Fuel fill limiting valve sensor is hanging into the fuel tank, causing a loud cluncking noise. Tsb for defect, no fix has been issued. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified, but will not admit whether or not this is a safety concern.dealer cannot fix because they have not been issued a repair procedure from the manufacturer.*ml

Driver's door would shut down whenever vehiclewas parked on an incline. Door would always close on the person exiting out on that side, and could causepersonal injury.

Design of trunk allows it to be opened by pushing the button on the door whether the motor is on or off.

When first pulled, the emergency brake sticks.

Dealer replacedautomatic transmission at 49000 milesatcost$1,800 to the consumer.

While driving up a hill shifting into second gear, and when movingpawl back to drive, it won't be able to do so.also, engine will stall, and there will be no power steering or brakes. Then, shiftingto neutral and moving vehicle so that itcould start working again.

The od light on the dashboard is illuminated and it won't go out unless the vehicle is stopped and restarted, the dealer has stated that no harm could be done with this light being on.

The vehicle sits uneven after the rear air springs are inflated. This problem doesn't fall within manufacturer specs.

Abnormal whining noise from differential at 50-65 mph.

Consumer stated the passenger's side front seat belt retractor will not release the belt.the consumer tried pulling the seat belt out of retractor, instead the seat belt began to retract tighter and tighter.consumer had to be cut out of seat belt.consumer had to cut the seat belt to be released. There were two recalls pertaining to the seat belts but the consumer's vehicle wasn't included. *ph

Seat belt buckle does not release properly, consumer was stuck in seat belt and needed to go to service dept to get released. Mjs

Seat belt retraction on both driver & passenger side is extremely sluggish. Consequently, the belt slack frequently gets caught in the door when it's closed, and thus provides no protection for occupants if a crash occurred. I complained to ford dealers but they claimed warranty was only provided up to 5/50,000 on safety equipment. In my opinion, this defect is no different than seat anchors coming loose and the belt retractors should be replaced at the dealers expense. I would appreciate your response.

1998 mercury grand marquis. Consumer states faulty rear brake pad replacement *tgwthe consumer stated when his wife applied the brakes firmly, but not hard, the vehicle lunged forward striking a sign and damaging the right front of the vehicle.the consumer later discovered the brakes were spongy and failed to effectively stop the vehicle. The dealer informed the consumer the spongy brakes were normal. The consumer went to another dealer and they restored the brakes back to normal operation.

Car pulls to the left when coming to a stop. Not always. Weather doesn't matter. Not due to crown on roads or ruts. Brought in for repairs 3 times. Make repairs suggested by manufacturer but didn't help. Consider a safty factor in mulit - lane traffic. Service department can not duplicate problem because it is intermitting which makes it hard to repair. No complaints about service department.

Consumer stated while driving a chatter noise could be heard, upon inspection of the vehicle, consumer noticed that the right rear brake caliper piston was almost fully out of its cylinder and jammed slightly in a cocked position, the inner brake pad lining was completely worn away with its metal mount grinding away into the brake disc, consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and had the 2 rear disc and right rear caliper replaced, consumer believes there is a serious design flaw with the abs-trac control brake system that would cause such a failure.

Abs brakes failed during emergency stop resulting in collision, no deployment of air bags during collision. Mjs

Left side brake caliper was missing a bolt, and the other was found loose.dealer notified and made repairs.owner believes a recall should be made.

Autozone- valucraft brand- ball joints part number vfa2101i recently had my ball joints replaced and i had a premature failure of the ball joint fastening hardware while driving down the city road in a straight line at 45 mph. It caused thousands of dollars of damage and it also almost cause me great injury. I suspect autozone is using low grade nuts cause the nut that was on the ball joint sheared off causing me to bend a control arm, crack my frame, blow a tire, all while barely missing a telephone pole. Had i been going down the highway at the posted speed limit i could have flipped my car, got pulled under a semi, cross the median into oncoming traffic and so on. I would like for an investigation to be started on their poor engineering choices and a recall to be started. Its just not for the safety of me but for the safety of other people. I do have all damage pictures and pictures of the failure point. I have pictures of the nut in question compared to another competitors brand and there is a noticeable size difference and hardness difference. The ball joints were replaced 9/26/2015 and failed on 4/25/2016. Autozone part number vfa2101. My belief is the nut is a lower grade when it should be a grade 8 nut. I say thousands of dollars because the auto body shops around me said they will not repair the frame because its a liability and would recommend a new frame to be put under the vehicle essentially totaling my car out causing me to have to spend thousands to replace my vehicle.

During normal driving noticed a squeaking and groaning noise coming from front end of car. Steering has become loose and was told by a mechanic that the ball joints, shocks, bushings are dry and that the vehicle cannot be lubricated because it is sealed. Seen other complaints on website regarding these same issues.i have been warned that the tires could fall off at high speeds causing serious injury or death.

When driving at highway speeds car feels like it is swaying back and forth.

During normal driving, heard extremely alarming loud creaking, squeaking noises from front end. Steering became sloppy and erratic. Took it to r&r automotive in lex. Pk. Md and had complete front end replaced, due to worn out ball joints, idler arms, pitman arms, tie rods, sway bar ends which could not be lubricated.replaced with those equipped with grease fittings. $1750.00

Steering wheel locks up occasionally.

While travelingcould not keep vehicle centered to road while steering. Dealer has been contacted. No positive feedback while going straight, vehicle tends to wander, no "on-center" feeling..

Vehicle loses power steering when driving at any speed, automatically steers easy and 25mph and lower. Dealer contacted and worked on vehicle four times, and the problem has not changed and still exists.provide further information.

Power steering fails intermittently.

Power steering reservoir hose separated, causing loss of vehicle control which resulted in a collision.driver sustained minor injuries. Dealer has been notified.

The front left steering linkage broke off, losing all steering control which almost resulted in an accident.currently at the dealer.tie rod fel off.

My 1998 mercury grand marquis at slow speed had the passenger side tie rod end fail and fall off causing complete loss of steering. This happened at a slow speed luckily no accident. Car towed to ford dealer. Replaced all four tie rod ends. Cost $400.00. Car had 50,000 miles , this was a factory defect. This is a sealed unit requiring no grease or maintenance. I replaced with greased tie rodends.i believe this should be a recalled part.

The inner and outer tie rod ends have been replaced as well as the upper and lower ball joints.*mr *scc*nlm

The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic.the manufacturer was notified.updated 11/30/2006 -the failure was the tie rod end which failed due to lack of grease.the grease fitting could not be greased.

While driving 5mph and backing into driveway inner tie rod connection broke on right wheel.dealer contacted.

While driving 18 mph the front passenger side tie rod broke. As a result, the steering failed. No impact reported.dealer replaced passenger and driver's side outer tie rod end, and passenger side inner tie rod and sleeve.

During a rainstormthe door will hold water. Will drain outwhich could cause a short, and loss of power within electrical wiring that is also located within door assembly. Dealer has done water leak test numerous times and replaced keyboard actuator/rim panel, and drilled new drain holes, etc. Defect is still occurring.

When the doors are opened there is no spring resistance.the dealer has been notified.

Heard terrible buzzing and rattling sounds from dashboard and left door area. Also repairs were attempted to align left side door.

Door are heavy by design causing them to shut even on a small hill when the doors are opened.

Left front door hinge won't stay open, resulting in injuries.

The driver's door will not stay open on an incline, consumer has had ankle caught twice.*mjs

Trunk release button can be activated by anyone unless the car door is locked. Incident disturbs consumer with small children. In manual, shows key slot with the release in the button which is not there in this model. Dealer and manufacturer notified, and cannot remedy the problem. Problem still exists.*ml

When driving if pavement is a little uneven the vehicle vibrates crazy. When riding over bumps the vehicle sounds like a truck. Vehicle was at dealership at least four times for repairs which dealer said, there is no prioblem.

When applying the brakes frame lifts up and shakes on the right side due to the bolts stripping on the vehicle. This can cause the body of the vehicle to separate from the vehicle in a vehicle crash. Dealer has vehicle.

The whole car would rattle if you would hit a bump like it was going to fall apart took it to a trusted repair shop they said it was body mounts the car only had 15,000 miles on it the dealer said that the body mounts are not under warranty then i had to pay $900.00 to replace them. I am very upset and will never buy another ford product!!!!

While driving at 55 mph steering wheel suddenly started moving frm side to side, causing loss of vehicle control, resulting in crash.

While drivingbetween 55-65 mph consumercan feel a vibration all through the vehicle. Also when hitting a bump the steering wheel almost leaves driver'shands. The dealer is not able to correct the problem. Owner has been to dealership 4 times for this problem.

Vibration felt at speed 59-70 on occassion. Yh

While driving or backing at slow speeds this vehicle(which has very very low miles) makes loud, banging, pounding, binding noises and sounds like the entire front end is going to fall off. This happens frequently and is not normal for any car with such low miles 15 years old or not. I have gotten to the point that i am afraid to drive this car. I have also been told that others have this same or a similar issue. The car was driven by an older couple aka my grandparents who bought it new in 98' and they both passed away in 2012. This may be in part due to the "double wishbone" suspension which i know nothing about. I am extra upset as i said due the fact that this car has only had an average of just over 2,000 miles annually and was treated very well. The car looks like new but scares me half to death when i hear this unmistakable loud sound of broken, binding, loose or defective parts. I am able to repair it but was hoping there was a recall due to the same story being posted over and over. This car, either model the gs or ls is an accident waiting to happen. If you are a prospective buyer, please drive the car slowly then turn in reverse and if it exists the problem will sound off immediately. If backing out with a very slight curb, the car will sound much worse.ford is not known for its front ends other than the fact that its cars and trucks front ends are either next to impossible to align and/or are very expensive to repair. I have never seen or heard anything like this in any other car maker, ford should pay for this travesty of a front end. Without taking a visual i would say it my car needs both upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends and a full suspension check or rebuild. If anyone hears this in a car from a dealer or elsewhere=do not buy!!!

The front upper ball joints were squeaking due to dryness, which consumer has been informed that they can break and cause the wheels to fall off.

Vehicle became undriveable due to the fact that the air suspension completely gave out and the shock absorbers were no longer working.the approximate starting time to this problem, when the compressor was acting up, was back in september of 2010.the car sits so low to the ground now that i will have to get rid of it altogether (either have a junk yard buy it or get rid of it as a parts car), as it's unsafe for me to drive, let alone have my daughter in.also, i'm a poor mother, unemployed, who definitely can't afford to pay the large costs of getting this fixed.in talking to people about the problem, it's either the compressor has gone bad, a wiring problem, or a problem with the on/off switch in the trunk.
