No deployment of air bag during front end collision caused injury to drivers ribs.

Upon deployment of driver side airbag it caught fire and i had to put it out myself.

Clock spring is defective, and horn/airbags do not work. Without prior warning. Dealership is aware ofproblem.

Consumer's girl friend 5'2" tall is too short for air bag on passenger's side. She is generally 10 inches away from air bag. Would she be safe in case of an accident? also, concern about safety of short person and air bag; added on 09-07-1999.

There's a rattling noise from within the passenger side airbag.consumer is afraid that this can cause the air bag not to deploy in an accident. The cause of noise is yet to be determined.

Violent deployment of passenger side airbag caused driver's shirt to catch fire during collision which could have resulted in servere burns / major property damage.

The contact owns a 1996 ford grand marquis.the contact received a recall notice for the vehicle speed control (nhtsa campaign id #07v336000).she stated that the dealer disconnected the vehicle speed control.as a result, she began to have electrical problems with the power windows.the dealer refused to inspect the power windows until the vehicle speed control has been reconnected.as of january 16, 2008, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle.the failure mileage was 82,000 and the current mileage was 85,000.

The car all of a sudden felt different while driving one day, kind of sluggish and then the engine light went on. The temp rose and smoke started coming out from under the hood. When i pulled over to let cool down i couldn't start it up again. Had it towed to a mechanic who said that the engine was shot. Not worth repairing. Had it towed back home and its been parked in my driveway ever since.

The car started normal at work and drove 20 minutes to home. Placed car in park, and attempted to turn ignition to off, but the key switch rotated freely with no resistance. The key switch was tried again to turn off ignition by turning in either direction fully with no affect. Key was removed, switch rotated freely. Steering could not be locked. Then attempted to stop engine by another method. Lifted hood and disconnected battery - alternator keep it running. Owner manual showed ignition fuse which was pulled to stop motor. Switch was still in on position when battery was reconnected. The car could not be restarted by key switch. Battery disconnected to disable airbag until repairs could be accomplished.repairs: i did this myself. The steering column had to come completely off. I determined it would take 5 to 6 hours of work to identify problem and fix. A dealer would have charge for this. After steering column was removed the switch mechanism was examined for problem. This was a tilt type column. A plastic shaft extended from the key switch across the tilt area to a plastic switch actuator in the main column shaft. A thin 1 inch long steel bearing type pin was found stuck to some grease. The column was taken apart and it was determined the pin fit into a hole in the switch actuator. This pin was forced back into the hole, super glued, and steering column was reassembled and placed back in the car. Loose shifter bolt tightened. Ignition switch was checked. Slider had resistance to being moved and showed some contact burns. The ignition switch was replaced.steering column with fixed switch actuator was installed. Car started normal with no resistance to ignition. Turns on and off normal.consequence of ignition actuator link failure is high danger with a stuck accelerator or parking in a confined space (garage). Engine can not be turned off in dangerous these situations or an auto accident.switch actuator is poor designed with parts that fall out.

While driving at highway speed plastic manifold intake cracked, causing the engine to lose coolant, i was told this was a problem from a ga state hero unit who stopped to give assistance. The vehicle only has 89,000 original miles, to me this is a problem and bad business on ford's part. Not taking care of the customer!

While driving on interstate plastic intake manafold cracked, resulting in coolant spraying entire engine compartment and limiting visability.entire radiator was empty in matter of seconds.replacement part was redesigned admitting that there was a design fault in original.

Had just turned off freeway when warning chime for overheated engine sounded.stopped car within one block & turned off motor.towed to mechanic.turns out to be the intake manifold catastrophic failure, common to fords (mine is 1996 mercury grand marquis, 71k miles.)am now running compression test to see if any engine damage, if there is no damage then i will have to fix manifold at a cost ofapprox. $1036.if there is engine damage then i will have to junk a perfectly fine car in excellent condition (apart from this). Ford does not offer any redress.i never received any information about this problem, nor about the class action lawsuit settlement.this could have been extremely dangerous, as i had just excited a freeway when the warning beep sounded.i have received all other recall info on this vehicle and have complied w. Recall.in fact vehicle had been fully checked by dealer only 6 days when taken in for the second part of the switch recall on this model.dealer never informed me of any potential manifold problem.this is a safety issue as well as a defective part issue. At the very least, owners should be notified that this is a common catastrophic failure.

Regarding my 1996 mercury grand marquis.engine fire on august 15,2007 in my driveway.key off, vehicle driven and parked 1/2 hour before incident.i received fords recall notice on sept. 4, 2007.

Cracked intake manifold, causing overheating and lost of coolant while traveling at highway speed. 1996 mercury grand marquis 4.6l engine.

Plastic intake manifold split during travel through mountains causing all of the coolant to spew out.overheating occurred immediately and caused severe damage to engine.ford had issued a technical service bulletin 02-2-2 dated 1/17/2002 and subsequently redesigned part.this was a known problem that has not been properly communicated to the consumer resulting in extensive cost to the consumer with an engine replacement.

My car was not running correctly one day, so i took it to my mechanic and he found anti-freeze in the cylinders.he said that the anti-freeze blew through passage on intake manifold into the pistons, and i had to replaced the entire motor and the intake which cost me $3400.00 enable to fix.i can not understand why they used a plastic part on the motor.

Sudden loss of coolant due to a failure of the plastic intake manifold. Re-placement part has been redesigned with a metal area where failure occurred. This is a common problem with this model. Vehicle has 86,000 original miles on it.

The contact owns a 1996 mercury grand marquis.while parked in the residence carport, the vehicle caught on fire. The fire department extinguished the flames.the massive fire completely destroyed the vehicle and caused damages to thehome.there were no personal injuries.at this time the cause of failure has not been determined.the manufacturer and insurance company were notified. Mercury grand marquis 1996 intake manifold cracked and had to be replaced, did not know there was a recall on the intake manifold until we had it replaced.

The vehicle was leaking coolant. The coolant crossover tube cracked and was spraying coolant into the alternator. It is a known problem with these vehicles. Ford should have recalled these vehicles to repair them.

September of 2003 the intake manifold blew in my car on my way to my dads funeral and i contacted the ford company about it and they said it was going to cost me 690.00 to get it fixed and i said that wasnt right. They recalled the police cars and taxi cabs with the same problem but would not recall the consumers vehicles. I told them that i knew they had brought those vehicles back so then they offered to do the job for 590.00 strange isnt it!! i got the job done but i still think that they should recall these vehicles. Then today i went out to get in my car which i just drove yesterday and now it wont run again now its the computer that went out in it and it is going to cost me another 130.00 to get a new computer , this is not good this car is the first newer car that i ever owned it is a 1996 mercury grand marquisyes i know it isnt that new and yes it had alot of miles on it but they new of the problem and still should have recalled these vehicles to get them fixed . I hope you can help thank you.yes i did put 6 people got hurt but we really did because we had no way to go away because we only had 1 other vehicle and it was a chevy s10 and we could not all go away in that thanks again

I was driving home and my car began overheating.the next day i brought it to a repair shop.they told me that the intake manifold was cracked and that there had been recalls on the engine in my car for this exact problem.they told me that there had been several instances of this repair being done under recall.they used their resources to obtain documentation of recalls being issued for this exact problem.i contacted ford motor corp. Customer service and spoke with a representative who told me that my particular car had no outstanding recalls associated with it.the repeated occurence of this problem has been noted by me through several instances of customer complaints posted on the internet.the exact problem is with a plastic intake manifold which develops a crack near the themostat and leaks coolant.

There was a defect in intake manifold, which was described in the tsb 630628. Please provide more details.

The intake manifold over heated and cracked, which caused fluid to leak.

Plastic intake manifold on a 1996 ford grand marquis 4.6 liter v-8.apparently there was some settlement offer from ford to replace this part with an aluminum intake however due to the car not being driven much,70,000 miles in 12 years the intake manifold did not fail until recently.i would like to know what options i have in fixing this part and possible reimbursement of the $800 or more it will cost me to fix it.

While driving my vehicle home from work in the evening, the car started to putter, then smoke came pouring out from under the engine hood blocking my view from the road causing cars to race around me and almost had an accident...also started coming in the vents of the car, making me nausea. Extreme danger and fear.i had to have the car towed $65.00 and the repair estimate came in at $900.00. Cracked plastic intake manifold.??plastic?? who does that?i have been unemployed and only able to get part time employment. I can't afford this repair so i had to have the car towed back to my house...another $65.00. The car only has 85,218 miles on it and has been kept immaculate.i contacted mercury/ford and they said there is nothing they can do.in researching, i spent hours reading hundreds and hundreds of postings regarding the same situation...and also, the same car, ford crown victoria has the exact same problem. I understand there was a "silent recall" where only government fleet/police cars were taken care of.how nice!the replacement was with a metal part, which it should have been from the beginning.this is an extreme neglect on ford/mercury part.i believe that the investigation and action should be based on the quantity of both the crown victoria and grand marquis combined, since they are the exact same car manufactured.please help!

Heating cooling system = car overheated and mechanic found a cracked intake manifold.there have been quite a few complaints on this by other owners - one dealer even states this is a defective manifold.believe ford should recall these or repair them when needed as they are defective.

I too have recently suffered from the ford defect - intake crack at approximately 85,000 miles as so many other have with the 4.6 liter engine.the local dealers say their is currently no recall but their is an existing recall for police and taxi cabs.purchased the "new style" intake for approximately $450.00 and repaired myself.i will be holding on to the receipt when ford realizes they better put a recall on this to regain the trust of loyal buyers!i will also be reporting a complaint to the nhtsa.a back up email address is: [email protected]*la

I was driving my 1996 mercury grand marquis when steam started pouring from under the hood.i had to have my car towed and learned that the intake-manifold had cracked, causing coolant to pour all over the engine.the garage replaced the unit for a charge of $692 and told me everything was then fine.however, before i got home, my engine light came on.i took my car to the very reputable automobile repair shop that i use and upon checking, they said the wires, points, and plugs needed replacing, no doubt caused from the prior incident.this work cost me an additional $425.

Plastic intake manifold cracked.dealer told us this was very common and would cost $977.00 to repair. This seems excessive since the car has only 75,000 miles.ford had a recall for their big customers but the little guy will take it in the shorts.this part should last for the life of the vehicle.

While driving down a major highway, the manifold cracked and a cloud of smoke come out from behind my car. I thought it was just a hose. After having it towed to a repair station, i found out that the manifold had cracked and that it was made out of plastic. It cost over $500 to fix it.*la

I checked through the service bulletins and complaints-there are several other complaints with these manifolds- not sure why they are making parts out of plastic-is this normal since it involves the coolant-heating area of the vehicle? this cost me 721.56.

My car (1996 mercury grand marquis) developed a crack in the intake manifold leading to complete loss of coolant and overheating while traveling through wyoming.it was then towed to a small town repair shop, where this problem was brought to my attention, and that many cars had a recall for this.unfortunately, for civilian cars there is no recall which led to a repair cost of $1132.00. *la

Complaint received via e-mail. We just had our plastic intake manifold replaced, costing $852.28. After so many miles, the pressure makes the front end of the manifold crack and leak. Our mechanic has replaced many of these faulty plastic manifolds ,and he said eventually all early models of the mercury grand marquis will have to have this part replaced. He said the ford company has replaced this manifold on later models, starting with 2002 with an aluminum part where the problem was. *tc

Check engine light is on.

Plastic headlight lenses have become yellowed and cloudy.this has severely reduced nighttime visibility on unlit streets, which is a safety issue.did some internet research and discovered that this is a widespread issue with numerous expensive aftermarket products that will supposedly restore lens clarity.i bought and used one of these products, but was unable to restore full lens clarity.i'm guessing that the cloudiness will return and i'll have to repeat the "restoration" process.i went to a nearby shopping mall and noticed numerous vehicles with cloudy headlights, all with plastic lenses.this safety issue was a non-issue when all headlights were required to use glass lenses.please restore the requirement that, for safe nighttime driving over the life of a vehicle, all headlights use glass lenses.or, require auto makers to replace or restore cloudy plastic lenses at no charge for the life of the vehicle.thanks.

During normal night conditions and in rain experienced headlight failure.when turning on the high beams, the lights cuts off then switch to the low beams.the lights comes back on. Please describe details.

The low beam head light is like driving with parking lightsnot enough light to drive by. The company is aware of problem. My husband seen a letter from company sent to dealers explaining and saying they may get complaints from owners. They offer no options to correct the problem. We have given up night driving when at all possible because we can not see to drive on our low beams.

Low beam light inadequate, causing poor visibility.

Consumer states that the headlight plastic lens are discoloring and causes poor visibility when driving at night. Dealer and the manufacturer has been notified. *mrconsumer stated that the headlight plastic lenses had progressively lost their translucent quality. This condition caused a continual deterioration and decrease in lens performance and their ability to transmit light as required.

Headlightsdo not relect enough light when used on low beam.the problem has been reported. The dealer/ manufacturerare aware of the problem. Asolution has not been determined at this time.

Head lamps very dim, not appropriate illumination.

Headlights are very dimm, will only shine to 100 feet, causing poor visibility.dealer claims that this is a characteristic of the vehicle.

Low beam headlights are useless on asphalt highways especally in the rain. Parking lights are brighter. Low beam headlight assembly has a shield over the low beam bulb, it blocks too much light. Problem is so serious a recall is in order.

While driving at night the head lights were very dim. It looked as if there were no lights on the vehicle. The consumer had to drive with the high beams on to see. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. They told the consumer the vehicle was out of warranty.

The headlight lens covers are plastic.the heat from the halogen bulbs has discolored the lens to such a degree that illumination of the highway is negligible. Subsequent uear models have been replaced with glass headlight lenses, an obvious recognition of the problem with plastic..i am surprised that this has not been a recall item as every 1996 grand marquis i have seen has the same problem as confirmed by their owner's.. This should not be an item that an owner should have to pay for replacing.

The intake manifold on my vehical is the same that is on any 4.6ltr engine that ford has put into production in the years prior to 1998. When ford went to a casted manifold. I know they have had several failures of this part. Even the local dealership parts man said that this part should be recalled. That tells me that they have had a high percentage of failures of this manifold. But instead the consumer has to put out around 500 dollars, to repair a defective part. Is there any recourse for this type of problem. I noticed several of the same complaints in your listing of failures.

Plastic intake manifold busted losing antifreeze, the sensor could not work, it only works with coolants, due to this the gauges did not work, until the the check engine light came on then i is to late. I was lucky i wasn't going 65 down the expressway when the motor locked up. I'm sure this has happen and cause accidents and no one knew what caused it. I have checked with 4 certified technicians they told me the problem happens often with this plastic intake manifolds. Why would anyone have a plastic intake so close to a hot! motor. I am also told that they did recall some vechile with this motor and plastic intake but not on this car. This could have been a very dangerous things if i have been going faster, are if i was not an experience driver.

Consumer experiencing consistant problems with faulty intake manifold and gasket.nlm

My primary complaint is the stress crack on the intake manifold. This is a known problem by ford, and has been the subject of a recall program for their fleet vehicles only. The coverage is for 7 years from the vehicles warranty start date, with no mileage limitation. It covers the intake manifold for 4.6 l sohc engines on 1996-2001 crown victoria police vehicles, certain 1998 through 2001 crown victoria taxis and certain 1998-2001 lincoln town cars, all using the same intake manifold as that on my grand marquis (same part number, same part!). The recall program is 01m02. The stress crack caused complete coolant loss and overheating of the engine at highway speeds and the release of coolant onto the windshields of following vehicles. In addition, the reel-type electric window system in the car fails in more than normal fequency. I have had three failres in the past two years.

While driving along a busy city street on a cold evening in january i noticed a cloud of steam behind me. It obscured my view of traffic behind me and their view of my vehicle. After pulling of the right-of-way, and examining the engine compartment, i recognized cooling system failure but was unable to identify the source of the problem. It was later determined that the "plastic" intake manifold had ruptured and sprayed coolant all over the engine cmpartment, and hot exhaust manifold, etclocal ford dealers were closed and unavailable. Reputable auto repair garage performed the necessary repairs (6 hrs) this critical engine component should "never" fail. Ford quietly recalled police, fleet and emergency vehicles. Consumers were left to fend for themselves. They have ignored my request for financial assisstance.

Intake manifold is plastic and has the potential to melt. Consumer is concerned that this could eventually cause other problems to occur, such as engine over heating.there are stress cracks where the alternator is attached to plastic manifold.the dealer informed consumer that the defective part should be under recall but it wasn't.at first, ford stated they would pay for the part, however they have now declined.this is a saftey hazard as smoke emits from the engine area obstructing the view of the driver.*jg

Air intake plenum developed a crack which in turn sprayes coolant onto the rear of the alternator. I know there are many problems with this part but ford will not replace it.there is a limited recall on this part but it begins less than 4 months after the build date on my car, even though the problem described exists on many earlier models. I would like my car included in this recall but am told no way by ford. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The affeced engine is the 4.6l engine with the defective plastic intake manifold part number f8az-9424-bc* installed in 1996 and up all crown vics, grand marquis and town cars.this is a very serious safety issue. Consider a family of 6 traveling aninterstate, at highway speeds, when the defective intake manifold gives outand a rapid loss of coolant occurs. This automobile was purchased new in september, 1996. The car now has 31,066 original owner driven miles on it. On 11/27/99, i took the car into a local shop (express oil change) for brake inspection. The car needed front brake pads and when the front wheel brake rotors were turned, all that was left on them was .965 in useable metal. The mechanic told me the rotors would have to be replaced on my next brake pad replacement. I walked across the street to vulcan lincoln-mercury dealership and asked mr. Marshall avery(service advisor) why the problem with brake rotors on my automobile, and he stated that ford was not using the same metal thickness once used in manufacture of brake rotors would be his guess. Why does an automobile which is minimally driven to and from work not have front brake rotors large enough in thickness to allow more than one turning? it would seem that ford motor company has reduced the thickness of its brake rotors to a dangerously thin level. This is a rip-off of the automotive consumer in that only 31,000 miles can be expected with a pair of front brake rotors and on the next brake replacement the rotors must be discarded and new ones purchased. In addition, it is a dangerous condition whereas a set of rotors which is turned once now is below the minimum dot requirement (.974) for thickness. I have sent a note via e-mail to ford motor company to their consumer assistance center, but have not received a reply. I would like to know how this situation has come about. I have owned many vehicles, but this is the first time front brake rotors have been an alarming issue in my maintenance program for my car. This situation concerns me due to the fact that my wife alone uses this car, and i am no longer sure of the safety of the brake system. It is my personal thinking that the use of a specific front brake pad which is not compatible with the rotor thickness has caused undue and early rotor wear on this size automobile.thank you for listening.

I believe that there is a serious problem with the steering gear box in the mercury grand marquis 1996 and any other vehicles which use this same component in their vehicle.the problem is that there is excessive play inside the steering gear box. I am sure that this problem is the gear box not some other component of the system.the seriousness of the problem is that the play inside within the gear box is translated to the road in the form of poor handling, swaying etc.i changed my upper, lower ball joints, tie rods, pitman arm ,tires, sway bars, idle arm,and aligned and also replaced the gearbox with a rebuilt gearbox this completely different gearbox rebuilt mind you has the same problem as the previous gear box.this type of vehicle is driven by a lot of seniors, cab companies ,etc.the newer model vehicles of this type use a different gear box which i am pretty sure it does not have the same problem as the older models have.as far as having the old part i gave it to the company that i purchased the newly rebuilt one from as a core.

On tuesday night, april 28, my 1996 mercury grand marquis suddenly caught fire under the hood of the car and the engine was in flames in a matter of minutes. My car had been sitting for hours before i got in it and drove it home, approximately 2 1/2 miles.when i parked my car in the driveway i entered my house.within five minutes my daughter screamed that smoke was coming out from under the hood.within another 5 - 10 minutes the entire engine area was in flames. Fire rescue arrived and put out the fire, but not before my car was, for the most part, ruined. From what i haveheard, and read, i believe it was something to do with the cruise control mechanism.

On 9/17/2003 @ 11:23 pm, my 1996 grand marquis caught fire under the hood and was totally destroyed while sitting idle in front of my house.the henrico county fire department was called.i have the fire report, which indicates that no cause for the fire was determined. In june 2014, i received a notification from ford motor company stating that my 1996 grand marquis has a potential under hood fire risk. The issue as stated was that "ford cannot be confident that after many years in service, the speed control deactivation switch in your vehicle will not leak, posing the risk of an under hood fire.until this repair is performed, a fire could occur at any time.a fire can occur even if the key is not in the ignition, and can occur even if the speed control system is never used."after receiving the letter, i filed a report with ford to possibly get some form of compensation for my car since i my car was insured for liability only. Ford responded back that my claim was closed due to the fact that i know longer owned the car, and they were unable to inspect it.i find this to be absurd since the car was totaled, and not available for inspection.

We owned a 1996 mercury grand marquis vehicle. This vehicle caught fire in july 2007 without any warning parked in front of our home while we were out of town. Luckily my daughter and granddaughter were home at the time to call 911. We did not receive a recall notice from ford motor company regarding a recall until 2 months later! had we been able to know about the recall, this could have been avoided. My wife and i are senior citizens, me in my 80's and she in her 70's. Had this happened while we were driving we would have not made it out of the vehicle in time! my daughter did extensive research online and found there were many complaints prior to the safety recall #05s28. These automakers need to be held accountable for situations as this, especially when numerous consumer complaints were made prior to the recall.we're lucky to be alive and not burned!
