My 1992 grand marquis was taken in for what was a minor miss in the engine.the machanic said the computer showed a code 214.he replaced the coolant temperature sensor/switch (for computer) per the code in the car's computer.the car was returned to me and i drove it to work, about five minutes away from the repair shop. About 4 hours later i got in the car to drive home and it started missing real bad, like it was not getting enough gas and about to shut off.my car has been to a ford dealrship who wanted $1,700 in vehicale preparation cost before dealing with what may be the problem.another machanic who use to work for a ford dealership check the car and could not remove the cod 214.the machanic replaced the cam sensor, the crank sensor, the coolant sensor, the air flow duct and installed a new set of plug wires.it is now july and i have not been able to drive my car since march 17th.what was a perfectly good car in march is now a peace of junk.other than this problem the car is in outstanding condition.it is suspect that this problem may be electical in nature and i believe that lincoln/mercury should at least assist in correcting this problem because it appears to be based on alimiting factor of the manufacturing of the vehicle's components.

I have had my right back door worked on several times because the locks wouldn't open and the windows would not roll down right now my right rear window and my left front window will not roll down!!! my car hesitates and jumps when i am going about 20-40 miles per hour, and when i hit 50-60 mph my steering wheel starts to vibrate. My brakes squeak but we don't see nothing wrong.i have put about $3500 into this car since i bought it, and i am really sick of messing with it.

On prior occasions, vehicle experienced intermittent loss ofinterior lights on instrument panel. Recently,experienced loss of headlights on 92 mercury grand marquis during trip over thanksgiving holiday. Consequences could have been fatal had the lights not came back on after i turned the headlights off and then back on again. In an attempt to replace what i thought was a faulty headlight switch, i discovered a wire harness connector to the headlight switch shows indication of high temperatures due to burning and melting.similar to recall on the ford contour. (see nhtsa campaign id number: 99v103000 ). I plan to contact ford and see if they will replace for free and or give me the part number of the harness connector part so that i may be able to replace.i plan on keeping both the faulty connector and the original switch in the hope that it will be of benefit to understand the failure mechanisms of the exterior headlights.

I have pictures of the fuel pump i took out of my 1992 mercury grand marquis.the car had coughed to a stop and i suspected the fuel pump.there was no pressure in the fuel rail so i pulled the pump out of the tank.i checked the pump with a battery and it ran fine.then i started looking at the fuses and found the 20a pump fuse blown.obviously there was a short somewhere. As you can see by pic 2 the short occurred when the "hot" wire insulation was worn through on the float bracket.in order to blow a 20a fuse there must have been a spark.fortunately, it appears that the contact point was under the level of the gasoline when the short occurred and nothing else happened.if the point had been above the gasoline in the vapor area the results could have been much different.pic 3 is how i routed the wire before replacing the assembly back in the tank.btw you can see that i did use a new fuel pump.i still have the old one. I sent a message to the ford motor company through their web site but have not heard anything.as of now i am afraid to drive my 1997 grand marquis since the design is identical.i guess my next stop is the dot or better yet youtube.i never did understand putting an electric motor in the fuel tank. The abs system has been an ongoing problem for this vehicle since it was purchased.the problem is that the abs system will "energize" at times when there is no slippage of the wheels.there are times when the abs system energizes with the vehicle idling in park.when the vehicle is in motion, if the abs system energizes, and the driver has to use the brakes, the braking action is sudden and extreme, creating a very dangerous condition.the repairing delership (manhattan lincoln merc, 301 424-7000, "miguel") has effectively given up on solving this problem, after a consult from ford (engineer, ernie peck?).we have no choice but to get rid of this car, because of safety concerns for my wife and our 11 month old.

During vehicle operation, while going down a hill and attempting to brake, the pedal was soft and, went to the floor. Consumer had to pump the brakes in order to stop.

Since the car is new it has had a problem with the front brakes dragging, causing excessive front brake wear. The brakes were replaced at least 3 times under the warantee and once afterwards. With about 8,000 miles on the last set of pads they show significant wear and will not last more than another 6,000 miles. I have read in articles of other people having this same problem. The car has a design defect.

When i purchased the car in june 1999 the previous owner (who had bought the car new himself) had already had the rotors replaced 1 time and turned 5 times.when i bought the car i immediately had new rotors put on.since then i have had the rotors replaced 1 more time and turned 5 more times.and after i get them turned it usually only takes a week or two for the rotors to warp again and the terrible vibration when braking returns.i also have a leak in the brake line somewhere.i have to "top off" the brake fluid at least every couple of weeks.and i have no emergency brake.please help!!as a single mom with a 2 and 4 year old it is very difficult to keep having to have the same problem repaired over and over--not just because of cost but because of the time involved in being at the dealer for the repairs to be done.not to mention the safety issue--especially with my babies riding in the car.it shakes all over the road when i put my brakes on and i'm always concerned that the brakes just might quit working all of a sudden.i see in the complaint section of your web site that there are numerous complaints about premature wear of the brake rotors and vibrating when braking.if this is a continuing problem, but is not officially a "recall" yet, is there some way that i can get some assistance on getting this problem fixed once and for all at the manufacturer's expense?i've already spent more than i could afford to try to fix the problem, but it isn't fixed.and i don't have any more money that i can put into this problem, but can't afford to replace the car.so something needs to be done.help!!

Have had the transmission worked on 3 different times.the third time they put in a new transmission. Which i had to pay for.the paint is peeling off and leaving big bare spots. I have had my right back door worked on several times because the locks wouldn't open and the windows would not roll down right now my right rear window and my left front window will not roll down!!! my car hesitates and jumps when i am going about 20-40 miles per hour, and when i hit 50-60 mph my steering wheel starts to vibrate. My brakes squeak but we don't see nothing wrong.i have put about $3500 into this car since i bought it, and i am really sick of messing with it.

About two years ago my wife and i started to notice that the lacquer on the car roof was beginning to peel even though we kept the car in the garage most of the time. We then began to see it starting on the trunk and other parts of the car, it's almost as if the car was looking like a snake shedding it's skin and it began to look unsightly.

My wife was delivering newspapers when the car started to pull to the left she thought she was getting a flat so she drove to the nearest gas station to get air she then got out inspected the tire and found it to be ok so she went back to throwing papers and the car smelled bad so she stoped and got out to look at it again and fire was comming out from the wheel well she ran up to a house and knoked on the door and asked for a hose they called 911 as she put out the fire.

While driving on highway about 65 mph with speed control on, consumer stepped on brake pedal to reduce speed, engine shutdown. Consumer had to drive to side of road. After a few minutes engine would start working again. Consumer was informed by dealer that cruise control was not a factor, however they could not determine the cause of the problem.

I have nicknamed my car "christine" because it has a mind of its own.all of a sudden it accelerates by itself.i can go for miles without even touching the gas.when i stop at a traffic light the back wheels are still spinning.i have brought it to two different mechanics.one mechanic actually drove the car and it happened to him (i was a passenger in the car when it happened.)he felt that the cruise control was stuck and told me to bring it to the dealer.i brought it to the dealer two times.they said that they couldn't find anything wrong with the cruis control and replaced the wire harness and did a tuneup.it is still happening when it is damp or wet out.living in vermont there is a lot of damp and wet weather.i'm actually afraid to operate the car if it is raining out.i don't want to get the dealer in trouble because in the past they have been excellent in repairing my car.i just don't feel that they know what the problem is.i saw a documentary on dateline last night that said other mercury owners had this same problem with accident resulting.should i continue to drive my car?shouldn't the manufacturer share some to the responsibility in the defect.would having the cruise control disarmed prevent the automatic acceleration?please help me in this matter.i need my car to commute to work etc.

The contact owns a 1992 mercury grand marquis ls. While driving 55 mph with the cruise control activated, smoke engulfed the front-end of the vehicle followed by an underhood fire that caused the front windshield to break. There were no injuries. The fire department was unable to extinguish the flames with their equipment and the vehicle was completely destroyed. She was in the process of notifying the manufacturer to inquire about the level of safety of the cruise control.the failure mileage was unknown.

Throttle linkage became detached from accelerator pedal when plastic anchor for the cable failed. This resulted in a very dangerous condition as throttle control was completely lost. Fortunately, the vehicle was brought to a halt without an incident. This was a sudden failure with no warning of a problem. On inspection of the pedal it was obvious that a plastic anchor that connects the throttle cable to the accelerator had broken.it is my opinion that this was a defective part and the expense for reparing it should be the manufacturer's.

The speedometer shows a much less speed than actual speed traveling.contacted a couple of ford dealership who informed me that they do not and cannot fix this problem and i was referred to a local speed test shop. The vehicle was tested on a certified machine, the test results were as follows (speedometer indication/actual vehicle speed):25/3030/3735/43 40/5045/5450/6055/6660/7265/80also, the odometer registers 95 miles for every 100 miles traveled.the vehicle has about 103,000 miles on it, and the malfunction has caused financial problems (speed violation) as well as endangering self and others without even being aware of the fact that the car is traveling at dangerous speeds, especially on 65 mph and 70 mph expressways.the test shop informed me that the speed differential increases at higher speeds and could result in speeds way over 30 mph above the speedometer indication.

All of a suddenvehicle accelerated to a very high speed. Driver was not able to stop the vehicle with heavy application of the brakes.vehicle went over the same curb twice and hit a bank building before stopping. Problem was mentioned to the service department of the dealership.the vehicle was totalled.please provide any furhter details.

They checked his vin,and his vehicle was not involved in recall. Caller was confused from all the information he was getting from nhtsa , the story on cnn, and what ford was telling him.

3 of 4 power windows inoperative most of time. All worked perfectly until all 3 started failing at once. Windows work ocasionally indicating electrical problems. Dealer indicated this was a common problem on this model.

I noticed this problem myself with 2 ford motor co vehicles i own and one my father owns. The 2001 excursion i own is being recalled for the same problem - the intermittent wiper motor function either shuts the wiper blade action down or the blades do not park. The other vehicles affected are the one described in this report (1992 mercury grand marquis), a 1990 lincon mkvii, and a 1995 lincoln town car.

Ignition switch: driving along expressway about 4-5 miles when suddenly noticed smoke coming frrom steering wheel. Immediately took to dealer where he replaced and installed ignition switch and windshield wiper motor.

Windshield wiper motor will not function, gets stuck in middle of glass , causing vision problems.wiper motor park circuitry now will park the two wiper blades in a vertical position, both in the line of vision to the operator, vision is impaired this is a safety problem.

Hubcaps fell off due to poor design.

Hub caps replaced four times. *sd

Plastic right front hub caphas poorly designed attachment, causing the hub cap to fall off. Has replaced cap three times.
