I have a 2002 mercury cougar c2 that i purchased march of 2002 and i have had nothing but problems since the day i bought it. Within one year of my purchase i have had all four tires go flat and additonal flats on top of those. My fuel pump also went out on me april 18th with only 18,000 miles on my car. I have asked turnpike ford, where i purchased the vehicle, on occasion to come and get my car for me to fix the tire after i had already put the doughnut on but they have refused to do so and told me that i would have to call roadside service. I would understand if i were far from the car lot but my workplace is only a few miles away. I called on one occasion tring to get a number to call mercury/ford to complain to them but the sales rep told me that she does not have that number that i would have to look for it myself. I have also called the owners of the lot to talk to them but i can not get them to respond to my phone calls. I was just upsetabout the problems with the car but now i am also upset about the service that i am receiving or in my case not receiving. Thank you for you attention in this matter.

On approx. The 15th of march, my daughter lost all power in car while driving through lunch traffic in town and was nearly rearended by a petroluem tanker. We brought car in to dealership. They ran a battery test and b/c that came back fine they refused to do any further testing. She was having problems getting the key to turn over to start car. They fixed that problem at the same time. On the 15th of may, the car came out of the shop for the 2nd time after it had lost power twice on her while driving again.her. The dealership contacted ford headquarters for recalls. None had been posted, but ford said if they check the fuel filter at the bottem of the fuel tank we would probably find the problem with losing all power(braking, steering, ect.) was that the filter was clogged therefore no gas was getting to the motor and thus this was why the car was losing power. They replaced the fuel pump and said that was a temporary fix for approx the next 3000 miles(for it was happening about every 3000 miles). And that we would have to bring the car in every 3000 miles to remain safe from losing power when it became clogged again. We decided that since ford knew about the problem and refused to do a recall to fix the problem that anyone in my family who drove or rode in the car would be putting their life in danger so we tried to trade the car. The dealership wanted us to pay a $6,000 deficit so we decided to keep the car until we could complete the lemon law process. Three weeks later, my daughter stated she had got really bad gas mileage(15 miles took 1/4 of a tank she measured it) the day before and she was afraid that the car was going to lose power again. It was a friday so the car couldn't go to the dealership til the following week. That night, the 6th of june.she lost brakes and steering while going around a curve. The car hit something in the ditch and rolled 1.5x's to rest upside down. No airbags deployed.seatbeat held her in car.pictures of car and scene avail.

The car was parked in my driveway.upon starting the car, at the moment i turned the key the driver seat airbag deployed.

Airbag warning light comes on. No accident, stationary and in motion. I do not see a recall reference airbag? with the complaints i read on your site about the airbags, there should be a recall???????????

My daughter hit the back of a school bus in may of 2006 in which the air bags did not deploy.last night she barely scraped her rim on a curb and both air bags went off and cracked the windshield.this must have been faulty air bags from the start because they should have went off in the front end collision she had, and should not of released when she hit her rim on a curb.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury cougar.while driving 30 mph, the front passenger side crashed into a parked vehicle.the air bags failed to deploy.the road conditions were normal.the vehicle was destroyed and towed.a police report was filed.the driver was transported via ambulance to the emergency room.she was not wearing a seat belt and sustained a head injury and received stitches to her lip.the current and failure mileages were 86,000. *updated 12/12/2007the consumer wants to know was there a malfunction with the air bags? updated 12/12/07

During a frontal collision a air bags faile dto deploy, resulting in driver sustaining injuries. Ph...

While driving at 40 mph a vehicle ahead slammed on the brakes and consumer hit the brakes and the vehicle jumped and accelerated which causedconsumer's vehicle to hit the vehicle ahead.during this, the driver seat belt did not restrain, and the air bags did not deploy.

6 months after i bought the car i noticed that after fueling that the fuel gauge still stayed on empty after a while it corrected itself but after that now everytime that i put fuel in the car it registers either empty or only half full. The dealership told me that cougars are known for theri fuel pump problems. Upon further inspection of the car they stated that they could find nothing wrong and to watch and not overfill the tank. To this day the fuel gauge is still wrong. After that the paint on the hood of the car started peeling. I took it to the dealership and after some harsh words and weeks of waiting they took it in and repainted the hood which now is a slightly different color that the rest of the car. Then 6 months after that the car started hesitating on acceleration and would spit and splutter and quit in the middle of the road. I took it to the dealership and they put it on the machine and found that a component in the computer was out so they replaced it. Then one day as i was driving it my break pedal went almost all the way to the floor. I almost hit several cars trying to get it stopped i had it taken to a nearby garage and i had no break pads on the front or the back of the car also i had to have my rotors replaced( which is not covered by a warranty) however, there was no grinding no warning, nothing to indicate that a car with only 20,000 miles on it would have brake problems. After those were fixed i was driving to class one evening in heavy rush hour traffic and turned to into a parking lot my steering wheel immediatelymade this loud popping noise and locked to the left and sent me into a 360 degree spin into a crowded parking lot. I had the car towed to the dealership where it now sits unable to drive because the steering wheel and front wheels are locked to the left with no explanation of why it happened.

Nhtsa campaign number:04v421000manufacturer ford motor companywas driving on a main city st. My auto stopped with no power in the left lane of busy 4 lane st. Would not start in neutral or park, man pushed it into the ctr. Lane out of traffic area. Policeman came after i called 911, after a few minutes he suggested taking key out stepping on brake then inserting key back in ignition, did that and it started right up, and he followed me to my st. And i got safely home.prior to this shut down incident it had stalled going down a hill however put it in neutral and it started up again.this incident could have caused a serious accident, prior to this incident it had been cutting out for a couple of months which i thought was cheap gas, so changed to tectron. I have called ford on 3/15 twice and they said they can not do anything about it, i then researched this online and found this site and want to post exactly what happened to me as shown by the nhtsa on recall etc.it does show it is for the orig owner, i am the 2nd. Owner however this has occurred within the 15yr. Limitation you have posted for complaints explained to ford that it may have taken this long for the filter to react in this manner.

I'm having the same issue with my 2002 mercury cougar as everyone else, but when i put my vin number into the search, there are no recalls listed for it.i don't think that its right that my life be put in serious danger because of an apparent design issue.this car is losing all power and shutting down. It doesn't matter how fast you are going, it happens at all speeds. We thought the alternator was bad, had it replaced and the battery at the same time.the same day, the car lost all power again and died out going 60 mph on the highway. All the gauges start going crazy and the lights dim and eventually everything including the car just quits.mercury/ford, needs to be responsible for this coffin that i'm trying to drive and fix the problem for me and everyone else for free. I've done some online research on this, and it seems like there are a ton of people with the same problem from years 99 to 02.

My daughter has a 2002 mercury cougar and is risking her life as well as others lives every time she gets inside that car. Her cougar her been having issues for months now, and even though we have spent hundreds of dollars trying to make the car safer for her, nothing is working. Our last straw was three days ago, when the car stalled on her on the highway. She was traveling about 45 miles per hour, when the car stalled and shut off leaving her stranded waiting for the tow truck. Her car, for months, has been surging while at complete stops, and has been shutting off while at a stand still. We've tried fixing many things, but nothing seems to be fixing the issue. After doing extensive research, i have come to realize that many others are having the same issues. Can someone do something about this please?? its clearly an on-going issue and is costing people lots of money. Her car is currently back at the dealership where we purchased the car, and is undergoing diagnostics. We were already told that her car was not included in the recall, and we will have to pay for even more work, out of pocket.please help.. Why was it not included in the recall, seeing that it is having the same problems?!

I was driving my 2002 cougar and the vehicle began to lose power, the check engine light and the fuel light came on. The vehicle came to a complete stop in the middle of the road. I have also experienced the vehicle surging while at a complete stop. I contacted the service manager at my local dealer and the only resolution he could provide me was to have a technician drive it and see if it would happen again. Even though i explained there have been numerous complaints about the issue by other drivers on line, he said there was nothing he could do. My vin number is not included in the recall "batch" of vehicles. I could pay the $100 diag fee in the event my vehicle does not repeat the complaint. Either way, i would be paying for the repairs out of pocket.

Driving on freeway, car next to me came into my lane towards my car, i hit my brakes resulting in my vehicle swerving and hitting the median head on at high speed, air bags did not deploy upon impact.

I was on my way to work and about one mile from my destination the engine just stopped. I let it sit about twenty minutes and it finally started again.this happened several days of shutting off while i was on the road driving.luckily i was at a place when i could pull over on the side of the road and get out of the line of traffic except for one time when i was at a stop light and it shut off and i sat and wait and it finally started again andi was able drive it to a safe spot.i took it to a mechanic and he told me the computer needs to be replaced.the only place that could replace the computer was the dealer.i took it to the dealer and after being at the dealer for three days they said that the ignition need replacing. They replaced the ignition and after three more days there and while they were working on other repair parts that they said i needed done the engine shut off about two more times.on march 13, 2014 they told me that all repair work had been completed and the engine shutting offwas solved.the total bill came to close to $3,000.00.i am planning on picking up the vehicle on monday, march 17, 2014 when i will have the money to pay them.i heard about cars engines shutting off while driving on the radio (wtop).i just wanted to report how my vehicle was having the same or similar problem.i am a bit nervous about driving this vehicle if this could possible happen again.the radio report was about gm vehicles i have a mercury and this happened to my car.

I called my dealer (dave knapp ford) and the service manager did a vin search and said this vehicle wasn't included in this campaign.

Purchased this used vehicle -- 3 days later, car would not start -- motor turned over, if was not getting gas.brought gas to the car, it had only 1/4 of a tank, put more gas in, it eventually started.took it for a diagnostic test -- fuel pump not functioning correctly. Recall 04n02 was issued for this model/yr car, not this vehicle vin number, therefore ford will not stand behind this car problem and pay to have it fixed.

I own a 2002 mercury cougar vin[xxx]. In 2/06 my car began to intermittently hesitate when accelerating. Over a few week's time, the problem worsened to the point that the car would hesitate, then surge ahead, and couldn't be controlled. On 3/7/06, i was driving on i-95 in s. Fla., and my car hesitated and surged in rush hour traffic. The surging caused a near miss with the car ahead of me.the car sputtered and i pulled off to the side of the interstate. On the shoulder, the car backfired, then shut off. I turned off the ignition, waited 15 minutes, then restarted the car. The engine ran, so i continued on my way. Within 15 minutes, the hesitation and surging started again. At this point, i drove straight home. Along the way, the car shut off 3 more times. Once home, i contacted my dealer, maroone lincoln mercury in n. Palm beach, fla. The service advisor told me that my car was not covered under any recall, and i would have to pay for repairs. I then contacted ford motor company who made note of my complaint and told me of a safety bulletin for the 2002 mercury cougar fuel delivery module. However, i was told my car would not be repaired under the safety campaign bulletin. I contacted a local repair shop, wynn performance in belle glade, fla. For their diagnosis. Wynn performance verified that my car was hesitating and surging and that a safety bulletin existed for my car's model year. Wynn performance obtained a genuine ford motor company fuel delivery module and replaced the defective unit. The technician pointed out that the old module and the new unit had significant differences in design. I tested the car and was satisfied that it worked correctly. To this day, my car does not surge or hesitate. Replacing the fuel delivery module corrected the problem, but i incurred more than $400 in out-of-pocket expenses for the safety upgrade. I am upset that ford motor company and maroone lincoln mercury disregarded my safety and ignored their bulletin.

I am currently having problems with the fuel pump driver module.i reported the problem to ford in oct 2018.fordstated that the 10 year recall ended and per their records the issue was resolved as fuel module was replaced by dealer don knott ford, carson, ca.don knott ford is no longerin business.the aforementioned dealer i believe was involved in unethical business practices.i was never informed of such a recall and dealer never changed module, i do not have documentation & would like such for my records.i am original owner of vehicle and the periodic inadvertent surging of vehicle when stopped/stationary at a street light began 6 months ago.i cannot 100% safely drive this vehicle at this time.ford has not provided me documentation of the alleged repair and/or documentation informing me of recall.i would like to have a copy of this documentation and/or have ford change the module so the surging can stop.your consideration and review would greatly be appreciated.lastly, fortunately i have a 2nd vehicle that i have been using.thank you for your anticipated review of this matter.yours truly,[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2002 cougar exhibits "engine hesitation, loss of power, surging, and other similar symptoms". Your website shows a extended warranty for this as our mechanic says we need a new fuel pump. Ford denies the car is covered.

Engine hesitation, loss of power, surging and stalling leading to near misses in traffic ,at stop lights & while turning a corner. Ford and their dealersclaim that their recall # 04v421000 has expired and does not apply.

The plastic tube that runs from "vmv" valve through th esteel line to the fuel tank (which houses the gas emissions) is ruptured.according to an independent mechanic this is a faulty design by the manufacturer (lincoln-mercury) that after the tube is replaced, it will continue to happen because it will rub against the oxygen sensor plug which gets very hot.

With the vehicle running fuel gauge failed.consumer did not know how much fuel the vehicle had. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Since purchasing 2002 mercury cougar in january 2010 the vehicle hesitates, surges, and stalls at any rate of speed. Initially the problem was rare, then gradually occurred more frequently. This now happens at least weekly, sometimes several times per day. This issue has endangered me more times than i can currently recall. Replaced alternator, battery, egr valve and sensor, iac valve, and catalytic converter. The issue persists.

I have found 3 recalls for my car, they are all the exact problems i am having, but when i searched for open recalls it said none are open for my car. I need my car repaired and the recalls completed.

The car gets a stalling sensation when at a red light, or a complete standstill. It feels like its stuttering and unable to keep power. Changed egr valve, 2 idle control changes, along with a transmission flush was done. Nothing seems to be fixing the issue. The car acts up and stalls in cold temperatures. Stalled at a red light twice. Has been taken to different car shops on numerous occasions. No engine light comes on.

The contact owns a 2002 mercury cougar.while idling, the engine revs and the vehicle accelerates on its own.the dealer stated that no recalls were available; however, the contact discovered nhtsa campaign id number 99v194000 (vehicle speed control).in addition, the check engine light remains illuminated for weeks at a time.nhtsa campaign id number 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline) was referenced.the contact stated that when the vehicle is started and the doors are shut, the power door locks automatically lock.also, the doors automatically lock while driving.the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number 99v226000 (latches/locks/linkages: doors:latch).the current mileage was 114,000 and failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

Automatic transmission failure at 85,000 miles under normal operation and maintenance.

While driving, the automatic transmission failed to shift properly.

Vehicle has been well maintained. Transmission was shifting poorly and suddenly same day, reverse will not engage, also no 1st or 2nd gear working.

I purchased this 2002 mercury cougar 9 days ago and the transmission started hesitating in overdrive, so i turned o/d off and it was fine. When i got home i tried to put it in reverse and it wouldn't move. I tried to put it in neutral and it moved forward. I recently discovered that i was not the only one, i have seen repeated accounts of this same a/t failure on this same year & model on the internet including this same complaint forum. I also discovered this was a result of mercury's poor engineering in the overdrive gear, and the plastic valve box (used for gear selection) inside the trans axle. I would appreciate mercury motor company paying for the repairs. I would not have purchased a vehicle to expect costly repairs due to engineering mistake or poor design.

My 2002 mercury cougar, started grinding in the third gear.i took it to my dealer and they quoted me 1500.00-2500.00 as an estimate repair.i was unable to afford the cost, so i had to drive skipping the third gear position.the saftey issue involved is that it is hard to get onthe california ramps at a good speed to keep from causing a wreck.come to find out, mercury made third gear wrong when it was built in the factory.supposedly, a lot of mercury cougars are coming back with the same problems in third gear.i feel that it is mercury's duty to recall this issue with the transmissions.it was their fault in the first place, and they should fix the problem.thank the lord that nothing has happened to me or someone else with this issue (as far as a wreck).but there are other cougars out there.

Bought the car in 12/02 and in 7/04 almost when the warranty is over the transmission failed.i was driving on the street and my car hesitated to go when i pressed on the gas pedal, when it finally grabbed the gear it jerked me twice.the following day it died on me and it would drive or go on reverse.it's been on the dealership 3 times since 7/04 with mileage of 33,000.new car warranty is over in 12/04 or 35,000.not a good car.it's been discontinued.no wonder.

We were driving our vehicle on the interstate and the car started to hesitate then accelerate fast it did this 6 times. We stopped at a store and pulled in forward when we came back out and started the car the car would not go into the reverse position. The car some how was frozen into drive even if you put the car into neutral. Now our car is at another dealership with no explanation why or how this could have happened.

The failure mileage was 84,000 and current mileage was 86,000. Updated 07/16/08*ljthe bushings and clutch were worn. The fuel pump and fuel sender were replaced. The engine light was on.
