Faulty airbag module, causinglight to illuminate, andairbag to malfunction.dealer has inspectedvehicle.the dealer replaced the air bag module but it failed again.the manufacturer was trying to change the defective module but has not issued a recall notice yet.

My daughter was driving my 2000 mercury cougar on september 25 ,2006.when another vehicle went through a stop sign &they collided. She hit him with her front end & then proceeded to swerve head on into a telephone pole . So this makes two front end collisions & the air bags never deployed. In fact she had another accidentin sept 2003 where a car went through a red light and hit her,but that was a side impact & again this air bag did not deploy. So this has been three incidents that this air bag did not deploy & this past one on monday was front end collision & my daughter has damage to her chest & rib cage , which could have been avoided if the air bags worked properly!

Airbags came out while i was driving.had previously visited dealership 4 times about engine check light.

After being involved in a head on collisionwhile traveling 65 mph the air bags did not deploy.

Involved in a collision in which the driver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy, also, driver seat belt did not lock up, upon impact.

Air bag light comes on intermittently, blinks 7 times pauses and repeats until vehicle is shut off and restarted.taken to dealership mulitple times starting with 2 years ago, but was informed that they could not check it unless it was blinking at the time.was advised to bring it back while it's blinking.blinking usually occurs on my way to work or after the dealership hours.i have looked this problem up in my repair manual cd and found the problem was that one of the airbag sensors was not working properly.i'm concerned about my safety if there is an accident if the air bag will deploy or not with this problem.i know multiple owners of this vehicle with this problem and one who has this problem and was in an accident where air bag did not deploy for a 100 mph impact.my air bag light continues with this problem.

No airbagdeployed whenvehicle was involved in an accident.consumer was traveling at approximately 60 to 65 mph whenvehicle rolled three times and impacted a telephone poleat approximately 40 to 45 mph. Attachedphotographs.

I was in a minor mva in which the airbags both deployed. Damage to my vehicle was cosmetic but i haven't been the same since. I suffer from attacks of vertigo, dizziness, blurred vision, light hypersensitivity, loudness sensitivity and have constant tinnitus to name a few. Airbags should be optional equipment and all exsisting auto's with them should have on/off switches installed.

Consumer parked the vehicle andpassenger's side air bag deployed. Consumercontacteddealership about this issue.

Flashing battery light. Lights would dim during accelerations or revving of engine. Alternator fails causing vehicle to stall in the middle of the road. Safety issue,i have taken the car to repair shop, mechanic states he has researched this and says this seems to be an on going problem with this model of car. Battery light still stays on and lights dim on acceleration after replaced alternator.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.while driving approximately 45 mph on normal road conditions, the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel.there was a moderate loss of power in the vehicle and a burning odor.the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop and they stated that the failure was related to the alternator battery cable.the vehicle was repaired.recently, the contact observed an excessively high temperature reading from the voltage of the alternator.on three separate occasions, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for the identical failures.there were no resolutions.the contact experienced failures identical to the ones mentioned in nhtsa campaign id number 01v031000 (electrical system:battery:cables).the failure mileage was 62,000 and current mileage was 68,000.

The lights on the interior and exterior of my car have been flickering since i purchased the car from an individual a few years ago. Last week i smelled burning wires while driving and me and my husband pulled off the road and he investigated the problem as to where the smell was coming from. He noticed the battery cables were hot and melted insulation on them at the battery posts.now instead of a flickering alternator light, headlights, and dash lights, i have an alternator light that stays on and everything else is still flickering. We took the car to a mechanic because the car quit running, apparently because the battery went dead. They replaced the battery and the alternator which cost me 320.00. I still have flickering lights and the alternator light is still on. I took it to have the alternator checked even though it was brand new, just to be sure and was told that there was a wiring problem, that the charge from the alternator was not getting back to the battery. All fuses were checked and to my understanding my car is not involved in any recalls according to the vin i furnished ford. I want this fixed ,and i see on all the research i have done checking the web for similar problems, that i am not the only mercury cougar owner of this year model that can't seem to get any help with an apparent safety issue. Also i have a sunroof that has to be taped down to keep it from blowing out of the car and leaks when it rains if it doesn't have tape on the seams.

There is an electrical issue that is effecting my vehicle. I have a v6 engine, and the instrument cluster, radio, interior lights, and head lights flicker when i start up my car and continue to do so. I went online to look at possibly recalls and saw that there was one decribing the exact issue i have. I called the ford dealership in huntley, illinois and talked to a guy in the service department, named mike. He told me that the recall only affected certain mercury cougars from certain plants.... I am alson having issues with the transmission range sensor.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.the contact stated that the battery cables leading from the battery to the alternator caused shortages.all of the electrical components flickered inside and outside the vehicle.he took the vehicle to a certified mechanic, who confirmed that there was a short somewhere in the vehicle.in addition, he noticed a failure within the fuel injection system.the rpm's would rev to a high degree and then decrease very quickly, which occasionally caused the vehicle to stall.the rpm's fluctuated when shutting off the vehicle or revving.the vehicle has not been taken to the dealer.the manufacturer stated that the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id numbers 01v031000 (electrical system:battery:cables) and 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline).the current mileage was approximately 106,000 and failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

Car experiences engine misfire and will not start after driving thru a one inch deep puddle of rain water.possible timing chain failure due to engine misfire caused by malfunction.auto has 43,000 miles on it.

Lights flickering, loss of electrical power, alternator needs replacement part, emission system malfunction, malfunctioning ignition.received poor service from dealer.

My daughter's car is having electrical problems.it is exactly asmentionedin nhtsarecall campaign 01v031000.the dealer won't fix the problem as a recall because is was supposedly fixed at the time of the recall before my daughter bought the car.it is a 2000 mercury cougar.ford has told her it was repaired and what dealer repaired it in new jersey.she is in south carolinaincollege , and tookvehicleto a dealer there.they said they didn't do recall repairs.she called the dealer in new jerseythat ford told her did the work, and they told her that sometimes recall work has to be redone, but the warrantywas only for one year.i don't feel she should have to pay to have the work done if it is a known problem with mercury cougars, and her car was one that was included in that recall.i wish ford could at least help her partially with therepairs.the recall saidthe car might catch on fire.i hope this never happens to her or anyone owning a cougar.

Vehicle lost power while driving down highway. Replaced the battery and took to shop to have alternator and whatever else looked at. Mechanic could not find anything wrong. Battery light still flashing. I'm scared this will happen again and leave me stranded. Also have had same electrical problems (power windows) as everyone else, as well as spending $600 on brakes, and trunk latch won't work. Radio works off and on. The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar. While attempting to proceed from a stop sign, the vehicle stalled. Upon further inspection he noticed that the battery cables were melted. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility. A mechanic concluded that the cable made contact with the power steering line which caused the insulation to wear, and thus an an electrical short. The dealer was contacted in reference to recall # 01v031000 (electrical system:battery:cables). Since his vehicle identificationnumber was excluded from the recall, he was ineligible for a free remedy. No repairs were made. The manufacturer was notified, and he was in the process of sending them correspondence. The failure and current mileages were 110,000.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.the contact stated that there was a recall on the alternator battery cable.when the battery shorts out, it catches fire and also shorts out the alternator.while driving 35 mph, the cable caught fire, but it extinguished on its own.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that his vin was not included in any recalls.the contact paid for the repair and wants to be reimbursed.ford refuses to reimburse him and advised him to call nhtsa.the current and failure mileages were 65,000.

Went out to go to work one morning and car would not start, all systems completely dead, jumped car off next day and barely made it to garage, replaced battery 11/04, problems ever since with battery light constantly flashing as well as all interior and exterior lights flashing bright to dim day or night, was told 11/04 needed a new alternator, still have not gotten a new alternator and do not plan to at this point, received the recall on battery cable and rerouting and had that done, if this is a consistent problem with v-6 2000 mercury cougars the company should take care of this problem immediately, if driving at night and car completely stalls, all lights and controls are inoperable which will cause accident to self and/or others, this is a scary thought for a single female driving at night and in areas where cell phone doesn't always have a signal, ford should fix this battery/alternator problem asap before someone gets hurt and sues.

My 2000 mercury cougar has a problem with the battery light flashing intermittently and the head lights and interior lights flickering consistently. First i took it to two local repair shops who found no charging problems. The second shop provided me with a recall and recommended that i take it to the dealer. I took it to the ford dealer(with the recall paper work) and they first replaced the alternator (which didn't fix the problem) then replaced a connector (which didn't fix my problem). When i asked them to replace the battery cableto the alternator which is mentioned in the recall the service manager told me that he would have to replace a $1,900.00 wiring harness to do that. He recommended that i trade my car in. So i went out and bought a "consumer reports" used car buying guide to look for a reliable used car and i found a section in the back for "recalls". Under the '99-00 mercury cougar section it references this recall and says "if necessary, replace the battery cable". I have filed a complaint with ford and plan to call the attorney generals consumer affairs division next.

When turning key to start vehicle there is a loud noise, not clicking sound, vehicle will not start. Consumer has to take key out of ignition and try again, a couple of times before vehicle will start. To dealer who found nothing wrong. Could berecall on battery cable routing.

Mercury cougar 2000 started to give me problems within the last week: lights flickering, loss of power, stalling.currently in a garage getting a new alternator installed.not under warranty.i fortunately found on the web that there is a recall for an electrical problem, but don't believe this will resolve the issue as it hasn't for anyone else. I read countless reports of this same problem on the web.

Same as previously recorded issue, however, this time the replaced part (alternator) fails after one day of operation. Vehicle broke down again, while approaching traffic light. All lights went out, gauges were not responding, radio shut off etc. Again, possible failure reported in warranty period, however, dealer and manufacturer refuse to repair.11/12/2002 repair appears to have not been working. Will never buy fomoco product again. Contemplating contacting attorney and resolve situation with fomoco.dt

The lights on my dashboard kept diming when ever i had hit the gas. Did inform l/m of problem and had made an appointment for them to look at it. They informed me there was no problem. That this does happen on some cougars but not to worry about it. I bought it in again for something and mention the diming again and they said the same thing to me. On the way home from work one day my car started to loss power and by the time i got home i didn't have any power. I called l/m and told them of the problem. I was told to bring my car in.they inform me it was my alternator. I had 3/36 warr on it & i had not even 37,000 on it and l/m told me it wasn't cover under warr and wanted to charge me over $1000.00. That was on 12/19/2002...on 9/4/2004 i was driving and car went out on me and i bought it to firestone and they my battery was so dead and they couldn't even finish the testing after putting in a new battery they told me it was my alterntor.this is the 3rd one since i purchase my car. I was told that the diming which is still happening wasn't a problem and now i am on my 3 rd altertner. Even i know there is problem. This shouln't been happening on a car less then 5 yrs old and it 3rd alternator.

The first incident with the mercury cougar was on the date listed. Nom safety defect listed in summary.

Engine light came on, them battery light. A new battery was installed but after a few days the battery and engine light came on again. Alternator was checked and found to be in perfect order. Eventually one day all the panel lights just went dim and the car shut off totally. Car was towed to dealer where i was told that i needed an alternator at the cost of $550. I agreed. Got the car drove it from the dealer the engine lights and battery lights came back on that very same day. Called the dealership and was told that it takes time for the electrical system to adjust. I drove it for one week and the car shut off again. I had it towed again. Dealer said it was fixed and that i should not have any problems with it. It's has happened over and over again since them. Idon't know what else to do.

Prior to faillure, dealership and manufacturer were contacted regarding the flashing battery light. Lights would dim during accelerations or reving of engine. Prior to final warrenty check (@ 35.800 miles), notified dealership that alternator probably needed replacement. This was denied by dealership. Now, 1500 miles later, and out of warranty, alternator fails causing vehicle to stall in the middle of the road. Safety issue, since many more fomoco vehicles (cougars, contours) have been experiencing this same problem.however fomoco refuses to issue recall total repair cost $700.dt

Power windows didn't work as fast, and eventually the car wouldn't start.the same thing happened not two months later.it took eight days to fix the alternator, which had been repaired by that same dealer before and only took 2 days.the day i got it out of the shop the sunroof broke.and then on march 29, on my way to work in the morning, as i was exiting the ramp onto the highway the rpms shot way up and the car "lurched " a few times before finally dying.i pulled over to the side of the road and called a wrecker.once at the repair shop it was diagnosed as being low in gas, causing the fuel pump to overheat.they also found that the bolt holding the motor to the motorcarriage was missing, but i haven't heard back from them on why.the car presently only has 44,376 miles on it, and one complaint has already been filed with ford.

With little or no warning, my car's electrical system will start failing. Lights will dim, rpm and speed gages reset and the car stalls. The vehicle will not start again and has to be towed to the shop. Vehicle has left me stranded 3 times because of this. The failure is in the alternator to the car and possibly the battery as well which has only ever been the original ford batteries. I have had to have my battery replaced 3 times and my alternator 3 times. This has all occurred within the last 2 1/2 years. After reading information from other mercury cougar owners on the website www.fastcougar.org, it is obvious that there is a substantial problem with this car's alternator and should be addressed by the ford motor company.

This is the 2nd time that i am replacing an alternator on my 2000 mercury cougar.this time, it's been less than a year since i replaced the old one. This seems to be an ongoing problem with the 2000 cougar, and mercury/ford have no intentions on recalling the vehicle for this problem.it's extremely frustrating that the alternator keeps going on this vehicle. Of course it keeps happening after the warranty is up, causing you to have to shell out hundreds of dollars over and over again.this last time, not only did i have to replace the alternator, but i had to pay $175.00 for towing because i was 75 miles away from home.this is ridiculous, and i am considering getting rid of this car once it is paid off next year.and since there are other people who are having the same problem, and mercury/ford does not want to recall this vehicle, i will never purchase a car from this company again.clearly there is something causing the alternator on the 2000 mercury cougar to keep going, but the maker will not recall the vehicle.

Vehicle had loss of power and lights were flickering. Wiring harness, alternator and voltage regulator need replaced.vehicle has 47000 miles on it. Dealer said it was 4th cougar with exact same problem but yet no recall. Cost of repair is at least $800.00.

Hi. I am from canada and hope that everyone that reads this never buys one of this pieces of junk cougars that ford is selling.the name speaks for it self fix or repair daily - drivers window assembly broke $100.00 to fix -fuel pump at 56,000 km$500.00- window stress cracked at 60,000 km not fixed yet- transmission replaced at 70,000 km $2500.00 - two ball joints and alternator replaced at 72,000 km $400.00- rearhatch will not open from inside not fixed yet- lights flicker on dash alternator again at 85,000km but did not help so put in new battery but didn't help no sense of phoning ford they don,t give a [xxx] $18,500 for this junk and by time it is paid off $24,000 plus all the repairs best place for all the ford junk is form the plant to the scrap yard so nobody has to put up with all these problems after reading all this you still go out an buy a ford as the saying goes there is a sucker born every day.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Lights flickering, loss of electrical power, alternator needs replacement part, emission system malfunction, malfunctioning ignition.received poor service from dealer.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the alternator blowing out while driving the vehicle.dealer has been contacted and has fix the problem with the vehicle.mr

Alternator in my 2000 mercury cougar failed for the third time.the car is now out of warranty and i am stuck with the bill.failure was followed by smoking in the engine compartment which steadily increased, small fire evolved soon afterward.was able to put it out with a bottle of coke (a brand that has never let me down).i was assured by the dealership that this issue was taken care of some time ago.i have hated this car for all of its problems and have successfully steered people away from ford products.i will never purchase another domestic vehicle for as long as i live.

I have a 2000 mercury cougar that i bought brand new and has been service faithfully by a dealership. But recently in the past 2 months there have been 3 alternators put on my car all resulting from the same problem. The console lights flicker and dim, the headlights flicker and dim, the battery light flashes and eventually it stays lighted and the gauges zero out and the car shuts down starting with the radio and eventually the light goes out and the car dies. This has happened 3 times to me within the past month all while driving in lot's of traffic. The last time i was able to pull over to a parking lot. I've seen that there are many other cougar owners with the same year as mine that are continuously having the same problem over and over. Why? a brand new car should not be doing this and to completely break down in rush hour traffic is definitely horrifying. The dealership has just put the 4th alternator on and says they had to rewire a harness but didn't say to what or for what. It's costing me $700 and how am i to believe that it won't break down again with the same problem. How come ford doesn't issue a recall for the alternator/battery/wiring problem. A brand new car is not supposed to break down before it's paid for. I'm definitely not buying another mercury product again.

Vehicle shut off after being driven for half hour, and failed to start. The dealer replaced battery/alternator/ ignitionswitch, andrelay, but the problem continued.after all repairs were made, problems continued to exist. *ph. Also the ball joint was replaced, the trunk release did not work.

The vehicle has been taken in several times for these ongoing problems.the problems have occurred since the first week of having the vehicle.arbitration papers were filed but request was denied due to dealership not registering problems as well as indicating a part capable of fixing the problem, however the part did not.vehicle was taken to a new dealership who registered the compliants.dealership replaced the ignition switch but problems still remain.dealership told owners it was an electrical problem that would be to complicated to find.the vehicle is a lease and is used for traveling back and forth for a college student on highways where the vehicle has failed several times.

Lights flicker, then loses electrical power. Alternator, 2 batteries, wiper motor, sensor, windshield (stress crack from bottom) replaced. Requested on several occasions from bob site lincoln mercury service department that the mercury factory zone manager be contacted, and to have the zone manager contact me. Each request was denied. I contacted mercury customer assistance and was told that only the dealership could contact the factory zone managers.

The horn requires a great deal of force to operate.yh

This time on a slight hill i sat stalled with hazard lights & headlights on but got rear ended by a motorist traveling 50 mph. Had problem looked at & thought it was repaired but happened again. Car is now totaled. Air bag did not deploy and gas shut off valve didn't work because much later at tow yard car was started. It could of been my death! 6 days in hospital & no car.

Lights flickering, loss of electrical power, alternator needs replacement part, emission system malfunction, malfunctioning ignition.received poor service from dealer.

Engine dies and vehicle losespower at anytime without warning.when this occurs power steering and brakes fail.

At 2600 milesengine checklight andairbag light came on, and key in ignition switch wasn't working.

First noticed that hatchback indicator tone would not go off.then when key is put in ignition it won't turn sometimes.when clutch is engaged rpms will go as high as 4000.engine stalled while driving at 50 mph.took to dealership and was told they could find nothing wrong.

When turning key to start vehicle there is a loud noise, not clicking sound, vehicle will not start. Consumer has to take key out of ignition and try again, a couple of times before vehicle will start. To dealer who found nothing wrong. Could berecall on battery cable routing.

While driving at 55-60 mph consumer turned on air conditioner, then smelled smoke. Turned airconditioner off. Went to pull over, and brakes had failed. When vehicle came to stop, consumer opened hood and saw flames. Put fire out, and had vehicle towed to dealer.dealer stated that starter had causedfire and replaced starter.

Consumer stated that while driving down a hill vehicle died, and could not get it restarted.consumer had to coast down a hill into a gasoline station in order to stop and hit a pillar.vehicle was towed to a lincoln-mercury dealer, who toldconsumer that the problem was thefuel pump. Also, after contacting the manufacturer they told themechanic that there was a recall on consumer's vehicle concerninganelectrical cable which caused the power to fail.

While driving at 30 mph the vehicle shut down and the consumer hit the curb. Dealer contacted. Please provide additional information.

I have brought my car back to the dealership 5 times and no repairs have changed the problems on my car - now i received a recall notice on the v-6 engine having an electrical problem - if you are not the company i need to place my complaint with, please advise correct e-mail address, phone number, or address - thank you.

While driving headlights flashed on and off intermittently.consumer pulled over.the lights came back on fifteen minutes later.then, consumer drove vehicle to the dealer, and mechanic determined thatbattery needed to be replaced. .but the problem recurred the next day.then, mechanic analyzed the problem, and informed consumer that the voltage sensor circuit needed to be replaced.

I feel the first problemi had resulted inthe continuing degradation of this vehicle. No safety defect.

After running for more than 10 minutes in a row engine will not restart for thirty or fourty minutes. Brakes lose control in rain.

The vehicle, 2000 mercury cougar, begins jerking as it is being driven at any speed, and results in complete shut down of engine. Sometimes the engine will restart after waiting several minutes, and will not restart at times; requiring towing. I took the vehicle to the local dealer, and an employee stated that it was known by the manufacturer to be a design flaw in that year vehicle. Another employee took him to the side and scoulded him for the disclosure. They would not discuss it further, even though i continued to question what they were doing to correct this known defect in workmanship.to this day the vehicle continued to repeat the same failure. I had the fuel filter replaced twice.finally a mechanic replaced the cam shaft sensor (he stated that he had seen this problem with the car many times) and knew that was the problem. Even though the sensor was replaced, the car worked without shut down for approximately 4 months, but began the same sequence of shut downs all over again. The design flaw should be recalled or consumers should be reimbursed for purchase of a known defective vehicle by it's manufacturer and designer. It is a shame to get "stuck" with a lemon. Thank you.

While driving vehicle stalled.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

This car has intermittently shut down in traffic at 70 mph, also will not start from time to time.very unreliable transportation.incredibly poor choice of vehicle.key has electronic chip in it which malfunctions.key replaced once under warranty; went bad again.costs $400 to replace.

While driving/turning at 55 mph vehicle hesitated then stallled. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Problems with vehicle's engine stalling.*mr defective alarm system and window. Invoice states that wrench light came on.

Sickly sweet smell when air conditioner on. Initially checked for possible fluid leakage from air conditioner. That was not it. Later traced to toxic mold in a trapped area of the air conditioning path. Dealer sprayed in fungicide which worked for a short while. On one occasion i got out of the car and into the house and could smell this sickly sweet smell on my breath. The day after i started coughing and it took 3 months of intensive medical to get it cleaned up. Then i got another whiff and started coughing again. I discover this is a known problem, but not admitted. Volvo runs a special drying cycle in their air conditioning to avoid this mold problem. I also hear mercedes has a similar problem.

While driving at 45 mph vehicle stalled. This caused the loss of steering andbrakes. As result, consumer was involved a collision, where the vehicle was totaled.dealer notified.

Problems with odometer, gas gauge, turn signals, windows, radio, hazard lights, air bag lights, speedometer.*mr.the mileage and clock were no longer visible. A new battery and alternator were installed prior to the incident. The sun roof leaked constantly and was also fixed prior to the incident. The battery and wrench light were constantly illuminated. Consumer was driving e when vehicle stalledin front ofa semi-ractor trailer. Also, steering had locked up. Had no warning prior to stalling. Finally took vehicle to dealership & left it there. Lights go dim and car wants to die/ doesn't want to go into second gear when starting off, and same thing is happening when trying to sift intofifth gear/passenger's tail light is coming loose/interior lights coming on.

The engine stalled without warning.

I have a 2000 mercury cougar that once warmed up accelerates 3000 to 3500 rpm and will not slow down until i come to a dead stop. Ihad it in for this problem at least 6 times and they can't fix it.i called the ford/mercury service hot line to see if something could be done about this.when i called about this i thought that a mercury rep. Would get a hold of the car dealership were i got thecar (johnson ford lincoln/ mercury in pittsfield, ma) and then get a hold of me. I called in jan. Thats not what happened, when i called i found out that johnson ford told them, they did not experience the problem. That's an out right lie. Dom kellog head of johnson service drove it and experienced it and on another time one of the mechanics riding with me also experienced it. What can i do about this. I can't let anybody drive my car, i am afraid they would not be able handle it an get seriously hurt. I don't want to wait until i get killed or some one else before they do something about it.please let me know what you or i can do about this. I am going to put down an estimate the first time it happened which was about 10000 mile mark the car now has about 23000 miles on it.

Defective oil pump caused smoke to come out of engine.

Engine would stall unexpected and lose control due to lack of power supplied for power steering and brakes, also experience hesitation..

Vehicle stalled while driving.sometimes vehicle will restart.

Problems with the transmission, when shifting into gear vehicle will shake violently. Dealer was not contacted at the time of this call. Ts

While consumer was driving engine light came on, and then engine blew out.prior toengine stalling consumer tookvehicle to valva line to getoil changed. Once engine blewout,it was taken back todealer.dealer said thatshop was at fault. Somanufacturer had an investigatorto look over vehicle.conculsion was that it was a manufacturer's defect.

The vehicle would stall during driving at various speeds.within two days that i received the vehicle it stalled.electricals intact.mileage 102.dealer said most likely bad gas, call if happens again.at just over 7000 miles sometime in march it started bucking and then stalled at highway speed.after fifteen minutes it restarted.i was very dangerous situation as i was stuck on the span of a major bridge with no place to go..for three weeks the dealership attempted to find the problem and finally blamed a fuel pump.one week later, at 55 mph, the car engine shut off with no warning, electricals appeared to work. Car restarted about one minute later on first try.dealership blamed air conditioner, except i had not used air conditioner in the previous six months.they never figured it out and could not duplicate.after a nasty dealing with ford, my lawyer, and the florida lemon law i now drive a 2001 mercury deathtrap/cougar.

Vehiclewill stall and then lose power while driving or hesitating. Then jerk forward while idling. There is no warning when either of these failures occur. The fuel pump/massive flow sensor were replaced twice, but failures recurred.

Dt:2000 mercury cougar.the consumerfound recall 01v031000 for the electric battery and alternator.the battery has been replaced three times in the last week, and the alternator has been replaced once.however, problem recurred. .when she contacted mercury they stated this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.the vehicle will start.but when she turned on the air conditioner or radio the vehicle stalled.both the battery and alternator have been checked to see if they werethe problem.two mechanics stated the battery and alternator were fine.it was an electrical problem.the emission system light on the vehicle kept coming on.ford statedthey knewof this problem and that couldbe checked.

Cd player burned, the cd unexpectedlywas playing. Smoke and strong smell filled the interior of the vehicle. Cd player red error, and cd was unable to be retrieved. Consumer will contact manufacturer.

The door locks installed allow the driver to hit a switch on driver's door to lock passengers, or to push in the lock, which will lock both driver and passenger's door.upon entering the vehicle i have pushed both the switch and lock, neither of which would lock the passenger's side.i repeat this up to 10 times before the passenger side will lock.not too safe!!2nd complaint---stereo will be on and the driver's side speakers will shut off for a few seconds and you will only hear passenger's side.then they will come back on.this happened every 10-15 minutes for about 3 monthes but has not happened in a while.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar. While driving 15 mph, the headlights failed without warning. In addition, the windows and sun roof independently rolled down. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

I feel the first problemi had resulted inthe continuing degradation of this vehicle. No safety defect.

Headlamps flicker- when my headlamps ,"flicker", they get so dim that i am concerned i will not see items in the path of my moving vehicle. I have had two near misses; one with an animal at large, the other much more serious, and a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The alternator replacement was done 2 times, battery replacement done once. When i brought it to the attention of my service advisor at ford he stated that this is only a bulletin because it is not considered to be a safety issue since the lights do not go completely out. My children whom ride in this car and the pedestrian that i could not see would deem this a major safety concern right along with myself and other passengers who have experienced this problem in my vehicle. I only drive my car after dark because ihave no other car.

Headlight failure while driving at night. Vehicle taken to dealer for repairs, and problemreoccurred.vehicle back at dealer.

While turning on the turn signal itfailed to turn on.consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, andmechanic replaced the turn signal switch unit due to a burnt wire.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.while driving 40 mph, the vehicle began hesitating, stalling, and the engine shut off.the contact was able to restart the vehicle; however, it continued to hesitate until fuel was added.three weeks prior to the failures, the vehicle stalled after shifting the gear into neutral.she engaged the accelerator pedal to prevent the vehicle from stalling.three days ago, the vehicle would not start.a dealer has not diagnosed the failure.the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 76,300.

My 2000 mercury cougar suddenly started sputtering, bucking, and in less than two minutes stopped in traffic. It would crank but not start. I had to have it pushed off the road out of traffic. It was taken to a repair shop where the mechanic told me it was a faulty fuel pump system. When looking online for recalls or safety improvement campaigns, on the ford website, they acknowledged that cougars have had problems with the fuel pump system. The website did not specify any model year. When looking on another website and searching recalls, the 2000 cougar had no recalls or safety improvement campaigns. What is interesting to me is that the other three model years, 1999, 2001, and 2002, all had recalls on the fuel pump system. Ford motor company issued an extended manufacturer's warranty on the fuel pump system for those three model years until december 2010. My husband and i both called ford motor company regarding our problem and were told that we were sent a notice regarding the extended warranty and we should have had it fixed before the warranty ended. Our car was not covered under the warranty therefore we did not receive a notice. They basically said sorry, you are on your own for the $600+ repair bill and have a great day. When a car is only made for four years and three of those four have a safety problem that causes the car to stop suddenly it stands to reason that the fourth model year made with the same parts would have the same problem.

This car has intermittently shut down in traffic at 70 mph, also will not start from time to time.very unreliable transportation.incredibly poor choice of vehicle.key has electronic chip in it which malfunctions.key replaced once under warranty; went bad again.costs $400 to replace.

I purchased a used 200 mercury cougar in 12/2005. The fuel has been diagnosed by festus ford as defective. The fuel pump was replaced as part of recall #04v421000. I called ford customer care 1-866-436-7332 to ask if there was anything that ford could do to offset the cost of the repair/replacement and my request was rejected. It's apparent that there is something wrong with the cougar fuel pumps. I report to ford that i thought this was a safety issue, since this is causing my vehicle to lose power and/or surge. They did not seem to be concerned at all.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.the contact stated that when accelerating at any speed, the vehicle would hesitate and stall without warning.the dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure and made the contact aware of nhtsa campaign id number: 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline), but advised that the vin was not included in the recall.the vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 141,000.

During periodic maintenance the dealer discovered the passenger side fuel tank strap had corroded and broke.likely cause was the salt and chemicals applied to the roads during the winter.the driver side strap was intact but would likely fail in the future.i was informed the fuel tank straps were special order since they do not normally fail.returned the next day to have both straps replaced.fortunately the issue was discovered before the tank separated from the vehicle.this is the same issue with ford trucks of the same vintage.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The battery was replaced and the contact received a jump start before he was able to start the vehicle. The vehicle remained on for a few minutes before stalling. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was advised that the alternator would need to be replaced. The alternator was replaced. The contact was able to drive the vehicle but found that the headlights were intermittently dimming. The contact was advised by the dealer and manufacturer that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 01v031000 (electrical system: battery: cables). The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate and that fuel was not traveling to the engine correctly even with a full tank of fuel. The dealer and manufacturer both advised that contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 98,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.while driving 75 mph, the vehicle lost power.the contact was able to pull over and waited a few minutes.she was able to restart the vehicle without any trouble.the failure occurred once more after the first failure.the dealer stated that the fuel was being blocked from entering the engine.upon further investigation, the dealer stated that nhtsa campaign id number 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline) applied to her particular year, make, and model vehicle, which they believed to be the cause of the failure.the failure mileage was 186,000 and current mileage was 187,000.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.the contact stated that his extended warranty was cancelled on his fuel pump because the vehicle was reconstructed.when he placed a full tank of gasoline in the vehicle, the fuel gauge dial would not go past the halfway mark.the dealer stated that the fuel pump needed to be replaced.they further stated that the title was reconstructed because the vehicle was previously destroyed.due to this, they would not perform any repairs on the vehicle.the failure mileage was 133,650.

Vehicle stalled out without warning while driving. This caused by fuel system failure. The pump was replaced twice.

2000 mercury cougar stalled due to problems with the fuel pump.after the fuel pump was installed, the consumers daughter continued to experience stalling problems.the consumer learned there was recall , the consumer did receive a rebate and it was discovered that the fuel pump that was sold to the consumer was the same one that had been recalled. The dealer did agree that the fuel pump was bad, however they wanted over $500.00 to replace it.

Ford motor company fuel pump recall, possible engine stalling.*mrthe consumer's received a recall letter which reference ahesitation/surging problems.the consumer contacted the dealer who stated that they had not received the newly designed fuel pumps and to call back in late may.when the consumer called back in late may the part was still not available.the part did not arrive until mid july and the consumer dropped the vehicle off that morning to have it fixed.when the consumer arrivedthat afternoon to pick it up the consumer was told that the incorrect part was ordered and the vehicle had to kept overnight.the pump was finally replaced the next day and when the vehicle was pick the consumer indicated that she smell fuel inside the vehicle.the consumer was told that he smell would go away in a few days.the consumer felt that something wasn't right an took the vehicle to her independent mechanic.he found that the floor under the back seat was cut to remove the old fuel pump and that the new fuel pump was secured with duct tape, not the retainer ring.

Received the recall information for the fuel pump, dealer will not replace the fuel pump per mercury home office because they said the car tested fine.if its a recall, why isn't it being replaced?

Vehicle stalls due tofuel pump failure.

Every year approximately the same time, the fuel pump in my 2000 cougar goes out.i reported this problem to ford corp. Every time.on june 14, 2001 i mailed a letter to them stating the continuous problem with the fuel pump in the cougar.the first time wasmarch 25, 2001 - while driving my car home form church, my car stopped in the middle of the street.i had the car towed to winner lincoln-mercury, they replaced the fuel pump and returned it to me on march 29, 2001. 2nd time on april 26, 2002 while driving home from work, my car just stopped in the middle of traffic.i called for a tow truck to tow the vehicle to winner lincoln-mercury again.winner replaced the fuel pump again and returned the car to me on april 29, 2002, approximately a year after the first fuel pump was replaced, winner replaced the fuel pump again.3rd time on april 21, 2003 the car stopped on my way home from work. I had it towed to ryan lincoln mercury who replaced the fuel pump again.approximately a year from the last one replaced......*nlm

Vehiclewill stall and then lose power while driving or hesitating. Then jerk forward while idling. There is no warning when either of these failures occur. The fuel pump/massive flow sensor were replaced twice, but failures recurred.

Consumer had three fuel pumps replaced within the year because vehicle stalled without prior warning.

The 99'-2002 mercury cougars have faulty fuel pumps.once they become ineffective the vehicle bucks violently and no longer is controllable.i am part of a car club called "new edge cougars" and every single member has had this happen to them, most of the time it occurs on busy highways and intersections. I myself almost was hit numerous times as my vehicle died in the middle of busy intersection.other members have had the cougar die while traveling highway speeds.there is no recall for this and the dealership refuses to fix the problem.once you get the fuel pump replaced, the dealership replace it with the same one and the same problem happens again in the not so distant future.this is a safety issue, as this is a recurring problem which the dealership refuses to fix but just replace the item with the exact same ineffective one.it is only a matter of time when a cougar owner will not be able to pull off to the side of the road or traffic will not it them when the vehicle goes from highway speed to a sudden stop.this will cause numerous injuries, large property damages and possible death. *la

The first time the car stalled it was in january 2003. It did it again on june 8, 2003. It appeared to be fine, but the following day, on the way to work it was having trouble. Did not use car until transport to dealership in port jeferson, ny on june 11, 2003. I was told it was the fuel pump. Looking through past complaints it appears this is an ongoing problem with this make, model and year. I would like to know what the manufacturer intends to do about this. I hope that this will not be another ford pinto situation.

When driving approx 50 mph in 4th gear, car started to buck and chug, slowed down to 25, and stopped at stoplight, car chugged once and killed/stalled.could not start, after 30 min car started but stalled after moving 10 feet, seemed as if car wasn't getting fuel.dealership and first diagnostic test blamed fuel pump and they kindly replaced fuel pump for $100 deductible (car 5000 miles out of warranty).yesterday, 4 days later, driving 70 mph w/cruise control on, chugging/buckinh reoccured, and then car mph started dropping fast, downshifted into 4th, pressed gas and nothing happened. Pulled over (car never killed) and put car in 1st gear and took off, 5 miles later it happened again (4 times total).called dealership, blamed bad gas or water in the tank freezing in cold weather, both occurances happened at 1/4 tank of gas, added "heat" to remove any water, and will see what happens next time i am at 1/4 tank.problem does not seem water/gas related problem is intermittent.

Fuel: fuel pump failure.

While driving vehicle stalled.the consumer was unable to restart the vehicle, and had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced due to a solenoid switch.the consumer informed the mechanic that when the gas tank was a quarter full vehicle stalled without warning.the engine stalled as the consumer attempted to accelerate. *sc

Mercury cougar 2000 after after driving for an hour or more with outside temperature in the high 90s or low 100s begin surging and stuttering and stops running.after the car cools it will restart and run.after talking to several service managers at several dealerships the consensus is that the fuel pump overheats and stops working.ford/mercury when contacted denied that there was a pervassive problem but all of the dealerships that i have talked to and brought my car into to be fixed have seen this problem.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.the vehicle containd a safety recall on the fuel system.on april 3, 2007, while driving approximately 60 mph on a rainy day, the vehicle shut off.the vehicle was towed to a mechanic where it currently remained.the failure occurred twice in the last four months.the mechanic stated that the fuel system could be repaired if it was paid for by the contact.the current mileage is 115,000 and failure mileage was 112,000.

I was driving my 2000 mercury cougar v6 and the fuel pump caused power hesitation and surging when i pulled into the left lane to make a pass. I had to swerve back into the right lane and nearly caused an accident with the oncoming vehicle.i then replaced the fuel pump shortly thereafter and the problem went away.

Purchased 2000 mercury cougar 13 nov. 2000. Since the time of purchase, on five different occasions the said vehicle has sputtered and stalled in the middle of traffic do to lack of fuel comsumption. While under warrenty dealer has changed the fuel pump once. As of this day, on three november 2003, i myself changed another fuel pump on said vehicle. I've noticed in other complaints that this is an on going problem with this vehicle, and as far as i know nothing is being done by the dealer to correct this problem. Today is 10 nov. 2003 and said vehicle has stalled again. I noticed that the fuel pump fuse was blown and changed it also installed a new pump relay. There seems to beand electrical problem within ths system, which in turn causes the pump to burn up. The average price of a fuel pump for this vehicle is three hundred dollars or more which doesn't include labor for installation. My question, is there a electrical problem in the harness or the relays that are manufactored. Because i've found the pump fuse blown on the last three occasions. What is being done to correct this problem. Thankfully there hasn't been any injuries. But depending on where you stall, it very well could be. I've also been told to at least keep a half of tank of gas in vehicle to keep pump from overheating. What's the deal? now is the dealer regulating consumers fuel consumption. What if i went on a road trip i would never get there.

Vehicle stalls while driving.at times, vehicle will jerk / stall. Vehicle will not restart. Contacted dealer, and dealer replaced fuel pump.please add vin.

While driving at any speed and when the fuel level was at 1/4 full, the vehicle stalled.currently when the fuel level is 1/2 full, the vehicle continued to stall.a technical service bulletinwas issued concerning this problem.the vehicle would not restart until it was filled with gas.this problem occurred at any speed on all road types.(this problem also applied to the consumers second vehicle which the same make/model/year, vin# [xxx], with the odometer reading of 60k miles) *sc information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Fuel tank needs to be replaced .this is3rd time due to faulty seal which causes fuel leakage .

The dealership didn't follow the proper procedure/specification when performing the fuel delivery module recall 04n02, because of this the rusted fuel tank straps went un noticed.the consumer noticed the straps dragging while driving which could of resulted in a fire.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar.while driving 25 or 65 mph, the vehicle speeds up, slows down, and then shuts off completely.the vehicle is currently at the shop, where the fuel pump and delivery modular have been replaced five times.the mechanic stated that the wiring was not making the proper connection to the modular.the current mileage is 84,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.

Recently, i took my 2000 cougar to the shop to have a leak checked out.also, i noticed when i used the heat, i smelled a burned rubber scent.i learned that the transmission sealbroke and i needed new gaskets.it cost $1,600.what is really strange is there was a 1999 cougar at the shop too.the mechanic told me that both of our cars has the same exact problem.is it possible that there is a recall on certain cougars?

There appears to be a widespread problem with fuel tank warpage on 2000 mercury cougars. The tank is molded plastic and can distort. This distortion occurs without warning or noticeable incident. Once distorted, the car will suddenly fail to be able to access the last quarter tank of fuel and will suddenly lose power or stall.the dealer from whom i purchased the car diagnosed the problem and replaced the tank and fuel sender; however, subsequent discussions on internet groups related to the car or maker reveal that there are a significant number of people experiencing the same symptoms whose local dealers are either ignorant of the problem or unwilling to fix the problem at the factory's expense.

Having so many problems withthe fuel systems.i have put fuelput a new fuel pump in gas tank 2 yes. Ago. Put fuel pressure sensor this year. Put new fuel regulatorthis year now when driving it will just stop. And wouldn't startup

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The contact was able to start the vehicle after several minutes. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic advised the contact that the fuel pump would have to be replaced. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline) that could have been related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

2000 mercury cougar with transmission problems. Consumer states that the transmission hesitates when putting it into gear, jerks when moving forward. He also states that transmission fluid on the ground was noticed.a local transmission shop diagnosed the problem as metal fillings in the transmission fluid as well as bad seals.

I have a 2000 mercury cougar with the terrible cd4e transmission with 66,000 miles and the transmission went bad. There are a lot of people with the same problems and the same trannys.

Involved in a collision in which the driver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy, also, driver seat belt did not lock up, upon impact.

No child seat will fit into the back seat of this car.we tried every one in the store.

The drivers rear metal brake line failed catastrophically on the highway in a panic stop. This resulted in complete brake failure of both front and rear brakes.

I have brought my car back to the dealership 5 times and no repairs have changed the problems on my car - now i received a recall notice on the v-6 engine having an electrical problem - if you are not the company i need to place my complaint with, please advise correct e-mail address, phone number, or address - thank you.

Consumer was pulling inside of a parking lot and without prior warning she applied brakes and pedal went down to the floor ,hitting a tree. Dealership was aware ofproblem.

My 2000 mercury cougar starting leaking power steering fluid rapidly at approximately 54,000 miles.two mechanics stated that the entire rack and pinon assembly would need to be replaced due to failure of an internal seal.the car has never been in an accident.it has been properly maintained with all manufacturer-recommededservices, oil changes, tire rotation, etc.

There is a health issue associated with my 2000 mercury cougar. I recently noticed that there were particles coming from the front and windshield vents. Some were very small, some probably too small to see, while other were large, 1/2 x 1/4. The particles consisted of black, rough surface, sharp material, probably coming from the air mixing box. Also coming out were pieces of foam rubber. When i went to the dealer for warranty service i was told that this issue is a problem with many of the ford cars, and has been for many years. Further, ford has decided not to honor a warranty to fix the problem, not to notify the public that they do not consider pieces of the air-conditioner falling apart important, and not to consider it a health issue. They said that the material is not toxic. While that may be true, what i do know is that sharp particles entering a persons lungs is definitely not good for a ones health!i have tried to contact someone at ford, including the board of directors, to address the warranty and health issue, but it was a waste of time! in my letter to the company, i sent both pictures and samples which they did not even look at it. I have some definitive pictures that i dont think your format will accept. If you contact me with a direct email, i will send you the pictures. You asked how many incidents, deaths, injuries, etc. I dont know. What i do know is that ford has said this is a frequent occurrence with many of their cars.thank you, william kahntelephone: (407) 647-1713email: [email protected]

The front bumper is so low it drags out of driveways, shopping center parking blocks and so on. Because of this, the whole fender has torn off on both sides of car. The full fender and lower section where fog lights would go is torn off too. Incident date was last time, this problem happens everytime the car is driven.

The front bumper fell off while driving without physical contact. The driver was able to pull over. The driver picked up the bumper and attachments and placed them inside of the vehicle and drovehome.the driver has contacted the dealer for appointment.please provide further details.

First noticed that hatchback indicator tone would not go off.then when key is put in ignition it won't turn sometimes.when clutch is engaged rpms will go as high as 4000.engine stalled while driving at 50 mph.took to dealership and was told they could find nothing wrong.

The cup holder in the cougar's center console spills on every occasion. It has happened countless numbers of times, and is a safety risk. I can't think of how many times i've nearly gotten into an accident because of my malfunctioning cup holder tipping over and spilling my drink all over the car, and all over my lap. It seems logical that ford replace these consoles without charge with the new console, where they fixed this issue.

Sunroof is stuck open. Went to close it and only one side goes down. Needs a whole new sunroof. Water leaks in when it rains. Damaging the interior of the car.

I have spilled coffee twice while turning right...cupholder does not hold...hot coffee on lap while driving.

I have almost been in two accidents, and ran over a curb because of the design of this cup holder. It has spilled 3 drinks into my lap so far. They changed them halfway through the model year. I think they should all be recalled and replaced.

Airbags came out while i was driving.had previously visited dealership 4 times about engine check light.

Engine warning lights stays on, although no drivability problems.suspect dealership of falsifying repair.dealership said it was leaking gas cap, although the invoice did not have a new gas cap on the repair invoice.acquaintance in body shop informed me that service workers merely disconnect battery post for a minute to reset the computer and then engine light stays off for several weeks.that is exactly the situation that happen to me.the engine light returned about a month after being "repaired" by the dealer.

I purchased the 2000 cougar new, with this came leather seats.well about 1year after owning this car the drivers seat started to wear on the side . Not any place your body touches.the dealership did a touch up and painted the leather.about 3 months later it was a mess again. With lots of complaining and phone calls andmajor fussing i was able to get the dealership to replace the leather on the seat.(i was told it was a courtesy call) well this courtesy call lasted me 14 months and its starting all over again. Now they are saying too bad. The service director(tim hebron) and the ford rep(.frank tetel )wont even look at it, and are telling me thats too bad. My car only has 25,000 miles on it and is garaged kept.so whats the longevity of leather?

Air bag sensor light come on intermittently, andengine check light would stay on intermittently in cold weather until ignition switchwas turned off.the air bag problem was being investigated.the check the engine light comes on periodically but the dealer was unable to determine the cause.

At 2600 milesengine checklight andairbag light came on, and key in ignition switch wasn't working.

The cup holder will spill any drink on any right hand turn in excess of 20 mph.i have gotten in many "close call" accidents because of this, and do not want to jeopardize my safety any further for a spilled drink or coffee.i am constantly cleaning my seats and replacing my pants.i know of many other owners with the same problem.since mid-2000 ford has been using a diffenrent style console with a functional built-in cup holder so they are aware of the problem, however they will not help out thoses owners who have the older style console with the non-functional cup holder.please contact me if you have any other questions.

While consumer was driving engine light came on, and then engine blew out.prior toengine stalling consumer tookvehicle to valva line to getoil changed. Accelerator stays at 3500 rpm without consumer's foot on the pedal.

When traveling to visit my sister at college i was driving appox. 85mph but after stopping to stretch my legs at a rest stop i continued to try to reach my previous speed and when i tried to go over 80mph the car started to buck.i took it back to the dealership and i was told that the rpms could not go over a certain level so that basically they said that a 2000 mercury cougar is not able to reach speeds over 80mph.

Car died at 50mph. Turned car off and back on while still rolling on the way home last night.also on the way home last night the car accelerated, on it's own, my foot was not on the accelerator, increased from 15mph to ~20mph and rpms went up. This is the second time it has happened in the last few months. I believe it is related to the "rpm" issue that the ford technical rep said was "normal". There is no way rpms increasing 300-1500rpm when pushing in the clutch is normal.i am concerned this is the second time the rpms/speed has increased on it's own.this is also the second time the car has died running down the road.

When the clutch is depressed while driving , the engine will maintain rpm and/or increase rpm by as much as 1500 rpm for several seconds or until the clutch is released in gear. This problem occurs while driving (shifting gear) or coming to a stop when the engine is hot. If i hit the throttle to try and bring the rpm down it will hang at the higher rpm.

The car has stalled on me 3 times while driving.the first time the vehicle stalled going up a driveway with the gas pedal pushed in.the second time the car was taveling at 20 mph turning a corner when vehicle stalled. 3rd time vehicle stalled at 5 mph with foot pressed on gas pedal. The car stalled and would not start up, causing it to hit a curb.the vehicle has been in to the dealership over 12 times, each time customer stating the same problem, however they do not have a solution.vehicle also has a faulty coolant tank as the coolant light is always on, with no problems.the cars brakes make a strange noise with new brakes replaced from a recall.many other small defects such as the leather chipping and seat covers coming off in the first 6 months of ownership.still nothing wrong.this is no longer a matter of wanting a new car, it's a matter of my safety, which is compromised everytime i turn on the ignition of this car.this has to be fixed before my life is taken.

My vehicle has not caused an accident or a crash yet, but it soon could.the throttle/ accelerator has been sticking on my 2000 mercury cougar since soon after i bought it in october of 2003.it started with the rpms revving up to 2 or 3 as i was coming to a stop.this happened once every couple weeks or so.the rpms do not go down until after i have completely stopped.it has since became more frequent (close to every time i drive the car) and significant(rpms go to 3 or 4). I took it to thelincoln mercury dealership soon after i first noticed the problem in april 2003.they repaired a blown air valve. The problem began again within a month of the repair. I then took it back in june 2003 and reported the same problem.they cleaned the throttle. However, the problem began again within the next month.in may 2004 i received a recall notice for a contaminated fuel pump. Thinking this was the source of the problems i had the fuel pump replaced.the problem began again within a month. Not being able to afford to put more money into my car, i waited a year before taking it to the dealership again. Upon emissions inspection in september 2005 they failed it because the check engine light was on.i took it back a week later and they passed it.the light was off then. It has been going on and off on its own since i purchased the vehicle.recently while driving the accelerator stuck making my car stay at 40 mph even though my foot was not on the gas.i researched a 1999 recall that seems to fit the exact description of my cars problem, but ford insists that couldn't be possible.

Rpm's remain high or increase when clutch is engaged-very unsafe!you never know if you are going to slow down or if the car will continue to go even though you are not touch the gas, clutch or brake.

While driving at 30 mph gas pedal got stuck andvehicle started to accelerate to 100 mph before slowing down,. Contacted dealer, anddealer wasnot willing to do anything.

When shifting the vehicle into gear or when depressing the clutch, consumer noticed high rpms.also, rpms hung for a long period before returning to normal idle.consumer has contacteddealer.consumer recall 99v194000 dealt with the sameproblem for the 1999 vehicles, butcourgar 2000 models were not included. Please provide any further details.

I was heading home from the beach.i had my car on cruise control.a car was stopping ahead to turn into a housing development.i tried to push the brake to disengage the cruise control, but the cruise control did not disengage.i again hit the brake, harder this time, but the cruise control again did not disengage.with my foot on the brake i tried to swerve to miss the car in front of me.i ended up losing control of my car offroad and rolling the car into a ditch.i avoided any other cars or property, but my car was damaged heavily.i am still awaiting the assessment of the damage from my insurance company.my passenger and i both walked away, luckily we were wearing our seat belts.

Vehicle maintains rpm and /or increases rpm when shifting gear. Dealership replaced the idle air by-pass control valve and i had no problems for a while but the problem has reoccurred. Suspect the valve is faulty or is installed in such a way that heat is affecting its performance. My brother disconnected it when the car was "acting up" and the problem did not continue. My concern is that this can be a danger when operating the vehicle on slippery road surfaces in winter and during rainy conditions. Not to mention that it's hard on your engine.

My year 2000 mercury cougar just reached 70,000 miles last week.i went to open my sunroof yesterday and heard a loud cracking noise after pressing the button.the rear end of the sunroof was ajar and the sunroof motor was still in working condition but i could not get the roof to close all of the way.i took it to a private auto repair shop where they took the sunroof apart and found a piece of cracked plastic on the driver's side.they got the roof to close as best as they could, however it still remains ajar and runs the risk of leaking.i was told by the auto repair shop that this could cost me anywhere between $1,000-$2,000 to fix.about 4 years ago, while my vehicle was still covered under its manufacturer's warranty, i was told by my dealership that they were experiencing a lot of problems with the sunroof in the cougars and "to use my sunroof often so that maybe it will break while it is still under warranty."i contacted ford yesterday and was told that there are no recalls on the sunroof because they do not consider the problem to be a safety issue and there was nothing that they could do for me.

Sunroof is stuck open. Went to close it and only one side goes down. Needs a whole new sunroof. Water leaks in when it rains. Damaging the interior of the car.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 20 mph,the sunroof was opened by a power control which partially elevated the sunroof.afterwards, there was a popping sound.the exposed sunroof assembly caught air which ripped the assembly, causing minor damage. The manufacturer was not very helpful, didnothing to satisfy the contact's complains.

Consumer states whle drivingthe sun roof hinges broke, consumer will fill in additional information pertaining to the same vehicle. Dealer has been notified.nlm

Sunroof closing mechanism is defective does not close completely...the failure leaves passenger side on sunroof flopping..i 'm very concerned that sunroof could fly out and crash through another vehicle windshield..i do highway commute everyday and its very unsafe for me i almost crashed on wet highway when i could not close sunroof in sudden downpour when i was driving. On cougarsunroof.com there are 1365 cougar owners who have the same sunroof problems and it was corrected on 2001 cougar models.

Sun roof broken on my 2000 mercury cougar1) there was no warning leading up to it breaking.2) i was opening the sun roof and then a loud "pop" noise and it wouldn't move. Ford used plastic rails for the sun roof and they can't support it. They later corrected the newer model cougars with metal rails but they want me to pay almost $1,000 to let them fix it. 3) it is still broken. I payed more for the sun roof in the first place. They should fix it for free.

I purchased my vehicle new, in 2000.in 2002, after driving the vehicle a total of 38,000 miles, the sunroof assembly broke and needed to be replaced.the dealership i bought the car from covered the work under my extended service plan.just the other day, while driving my car, the sunroof assembly broke again.this time though, the sunroof detached from my vehicle.thankfully, i was driving on a road that had little to no other traffic.had i been driving the vehicle to work during rush hour, the sunroof would have most surely caused an accident.also, it appears that the sunroof assembly failing is a well known problem, as it is documented on www.cougarsunroof.com.if quality is indeed job 1 at ford, why would they not fix an obvious design flaw?

The contact owns a 2000 mercury cougar. While attempting to close the sun roof the contact noticed that the sun roof mechanism would no longer function. 2000 mercury cougar with 76,000 miles on it and the sunroof has failed completely. Took the car back to don thompson lincoln mercury and they made me aware that the sunroof was built with a plastic rail to open it, this plastic is to weak for the metal roof it holds and cannot sustain the weight. It was mentioned this has been a common problem, and the price too fix it was $1300 just for the parts.after contacting fod directly they told me nothing could be done because the warranty was no longer in effect, and they apologized for me being stuck with this.still not fixed and when driving over 55 mph the sunroof flies open, causing a loud sound to produce distracting me from driving. The button to open it no longer works, leaks on heavy rainy night which is ruining the interior which will cost more money that i don't have, as it is i can't afford to fix the sunroof. Bad choice for ford/mercury.
