On my drive home from work on friday 7/12/2013 at approximately 3:30 pm the airbag on the driver side deployed for no apparent reason.this was on a 1999 mercury cougar that my family purchased new.the vin is[xxx].i called and spoke with [xxx] at ford and he stated there was nothing ford could do.he suggested i call my insurance company...i don't understand why my insurance company would be concerned with a flaw in a ford product.i hope you will understand that i am scared to drive this car at this point.will one of three remaining air bags deploy for no apparent reason?to be told to contact my insurance company is not acceptable.i am a very reasonable person but will not be taken advantage of.my expectation are simple:ford needs to have this car towed to a dealer.the drivers side seat needs to be repaired or replaced.the entire air bag systems needs to be checked and brought up to a safe standard.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Passenger side air bad deploys in a parked car causing injury and damage worth $3,500 and ford refuses to pay for it.on 31st may 2003, we went to the library to drop off our books. We parkedour car, and i got down to drop the books.my wife, who was sitting on the passenger side turned around to pick more of the books from the back seat and her side air bagblew out. She broughther hand forward to cover her face and was hit by the blown air bag. Airbag deployed when the car was parked. The car is a 1999 mercury cougar smoke started coming out and we had to call the fire department. Per, fire department captain, they have never seen this case before. Luckily, the smoke was just the air bag powder.side air bag deployed. Air bag cover hit the windshield, which cracked the whole windshield. The force of deployment also popped out air vent and the dashboard.when we called up ford, they asked us to claim it through our insurance. But when we told them that it did not make sense they told us send the vehicle to a ford dealer where they can rundiagnostics. Current mileage is around 64,000.ford says that one of the modules was faulty and also this module has warranty of 5 years or 50,000 miles. But this was not mentioned in any of their service manuals. Also nobody pointed this out when the car had the ford recommended 60,000-mile maintenance and check we also made repeated calls to ford, to give us in writing that the air bags deployed due to faulty unit.but they are refusing to do so.progressive, our insurance agent has said they cannot cover it and that we have to talk to ford (they did say that if this incident caused a collision, they would have paid for it). Ford says this is out of warranty. How do we come to know which part is going to cost us in future because it has run out of warranty, if nobody points out the problem during routine maintenance.*nlm

Dt:the consumer owns a 1999 mercury cougar.the heater blower motor resister was replaced, because when the dashboardwas pulled off it was burned.there was a recall for this, and the dealership stated that similiar to other vehicles thathad been fixed.when contacting ford, they stated this vehicle was not part of the recall.the motor switch would not work on one of the four speeds; therefore, the vehicle was taken into the dealership.this was first noticed on july 11, 2005.
Car's warning light stayed on constantly, took in first time was told electricle wiring, had taken in 4 more times then break lights failed they explained it was mechanicle malfunction, passenger seat cable broke been waiting since 8/26/99 for replacement, cruise control stopped working, warning for coolant keep eluminating
The vehicle experienced a problem with the electrical system as stated in recall #01v230000, however the vehicle identification number was not included.
The vehicle experienced the same defect as stated in recall 01 v 230 000, however the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury cougar. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The contact inspected under the hood and tightened thebattery cable. The vehicle restarted and resumed normally. The failure recurred upon reaching the residence. In addition, a strong odor of fuel emitted inside of the vehicle with a small amount of leakage on the ground. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id numbers 04v421000 ( fuel system, gasoline) and 01v031000 (electrical system). The vin was not included in either recall. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but had not been diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000.
Recall id#8389 (feb 06, 2001) electrical system, battery cables.1999 mercury cougar 2.5l v6 (70263 miles).just picked up car after paying $3500 in repairs for headgasket, etc.mechanic mentioned a bearing in the alternator is going and should be replaced soon.that would be the third alternator in this car.i am the original owner, vehicle purchased april 17, 2000.alternator #1 jan 15, 2003 (21672 miles) - covered by warranty (vehicle broke down on interstate). Alternator #2 car again died on the interstate with no warning, no "idiot lights. 09/20/2005 (47,791 miles).paid for myself.now, 2/24/09 (70,263 miles) need another new alternator!help!!how do i get this covered, i just got laid off, just paid $3500.00 in other repairs and cannot believe i need another alternator!
I have had multiple problems since i purchased the car in 10/99.i have had the sun roof replaced once and now needs it again for the same reason; the track broke ($1000 to fix, $2000 if i go to the dealer). The ignition switch has been changed twice because it sticks (it need to be changed again).in 2/00 it started: whenever the car got cold, the car would either not turn on or would just shut down while i was driving.the car was brought to the dealer multiple times for the same problem.he changed numerous parts but was unable to resolve the issue, until a 2004 recall for something to do with the fuel system.about three years ago the engine light came on at which time the dealer replaced the catalytic converter.a few weeks later the engine light came on again at which time the dealer told me it was the head gasket.that, i had replaced by an independent mechanic and then still had to bring it back to the dealer to have the catalytic converter done a second time, and to have the computer reset to have the engine light shut off.anytime i have work done on the car, even just maintenance, the check coolant light or the engine light comes on and i have to bring it to the dealer to have it shut off.in 9/05 the coolant light illuminated and a day later the engine light came on, i brought the car to an independent mechanic who changed the overflow tank because he believed it to be a bad sensor.after fixing that, the engine light would not go off as well as one of my brake lights.he did multiple tests and determined that it is something electrical, unfortunately he could not pinpoint the exact cause of the electrical problem.for some reason those lights have gone off but i expect them come back on soon.
I am the original owner of a 1999 mercury cougar automatic v6.i have never been in an accident with the vehicle, but continue to have mechanical problems.like other 1999 ' 2000 mercury cougar owners i worry about the safety of driving a vehicle with more problems than can cost effectively be fixed.my list of broken items include the radio, power window regulator, o2 sensors, transmission at 59,000 miles, dashboard lights (low coolant and check engine), door/window leaky seal issues, engine misfire (decreased acceleration) and now my cruise control and turn signals do not work.upon researching the recall for cruise control fires dealing with ford products i found that i am among other disgruntled cougar owners.ford/mercury or ford technicians have not done a satisfactory job letting owners know of recalls that need attention.my latest concern is that my cougar might start on fire, per my complaint with ford; they see no threat with my cruise control issues and suggested i contact the nhtsa with my complaint.
I have owned my 99 cougar for 7 years now i bought it used and everything worked fine the firstyear but late within the last 3 years i have changed the alternator 3 times starter 4 times and the battery 3 times just recently my car refused to start so i figured it was the starter cause every fall and winter one of the 3 mentioned goes out well i replaced the starter and it wont start now i checked the battery and that is good i also checked the cables and they are good , and just today i found a few recalls on my car online so i went to the ford website to see if the recalls where listed but they are not . Does that mean the previous owner did the recalls ? and if so why is the same problem occurring and what can the dealership do or will do ? what recourse do i have if the dealership refuses to fix my car under the recall?
I also own a 99 cougar and have had nothing but issues, but i love the way the car drives when it works correctly.i have also replaced the alternator and it's also on its 5th window motor, which still does not work correctly.i have replaced almost every sensor possible, too.of course when i have questioned mercury on these issues, they claim that it's not a common problem with the cougars.i have heard from others on the tire issues, but luckily mine has not had any issues with tires.the newest issue with mine is the headlamps.i was in some heavy rain water in the beginning of oct. 2006 and they leaked and had puddles inside of them.i took it to be serviced by mercury and i have not had my car back for 3.5 months!in talking with ford i have found out that they have not made any headlamps for the 99 cougar since jan. 2006 and they are on a nation wide backorder. To make a long story short, i am hoping that ford will make things right for not stocking headlamps and putting me without a car for the past 3.5 months.
Electrical system problems, radiator light on, the air bag light blinking, engine misfire light blinking, alarm system going off and not being able to stop it, just having to let time end the system, the problem with the system is intermittent and the dealership in not able to correct problem.*cj

The contact owns a 1999 mercury cougar.on september 4, 2008, while driving approximately 65 mph, the interior and exterior lights began flickering on and off.the following week, the contact replaced the battery, but the failure persisted.the dealer performed a diagnostic and stated that the battery cable was defective.the manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 01v031000 (electrical system:battery).the vehicle has not been repaired.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 55,000.
Vehicle was brought in for electrical problems several times.
To whom it may concern:(management)i was driving on a residential street and was honked at by another driver who told me that my brakes lights were not working. I had a friend of mine that is a certified repair person look at it and he said it wasn't the light or the fuse or the brake switch under the pedal and that he was 95% sure it was the stop lamp extension harness that has bronze terminals at the brake lamp switch connector. I bought this car in 2004 and under a recall had the blower switch resistor repaired under the recall. The reason the recalls for this car are not showing up is because the recalls are more than 15 years old & they don't keep track after that. I have never had this problem with this car before but i have had over $9,000 worth of repairs on it since i've owned it not including the normal oil changes and tune up. I think ford needs to approve this for the recall considering they knew how many things were wrong with the cougars and that's why they don't make them anymore... Not a satisfied customer with a ford product!first & last ford product i will ever own if this isn't fixed to my satisfaction. Thank-you,[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 1999 mercury cougar. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact also stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was able to start after several attempts, however the vehicle failed after the contact drove for a couple of miles. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the alternator and fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 01v031000 (electrical system) or 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,000.
1999 cougar battery connection problems or something faulty. Sometimes while i'm driving my car just goes dead. It's done that a lot lately.i now have a new battery but the same thing happens and i'm scared when it happens on the freeway . Tonight i was driving on the freeway and it went dead! i had no lights , i had no tail lights,no head lights ,no blinkers and no emergency lights and the car close behind me had to slam on breaks cause there was no emergency lane, no side of the road just a guard rail! i was in the middle of the road . Brand new batteryjust goes dead like it did many times on the older batteryit's not the alternator either...something is not making a connection.i'm gonna end up squashed, dead cause on a freeway at night when the car dies everything dies: lights, tail lights and emergency lights if im in the dark no one would see me in time to stop if im in the middle of the road.
I have a 1999 mercury cougar.i took my car to my mechanic to find out what was wrong with my heater they told me before they did anything to contact ford because there was a recall on my car for the same exact problem.i contacted ford and they first told my that there was no recall.after i presented them with the recall numbers they then informed me that there was a such recall, but that my car would not be covered under the recall.on your web-site there is a section on the recall on the same year make and model as my car.it notes that 342,962 mercury cougars have been affected by this i don't understand how they can refuse to provide my with the recall also.
Consumer complaint: odi case number: 10070550 component: otherdetails: exhibiting a starter grinding noise and / or lack of starter drive engagement (from tsb). The flywheel defect first appeared in june 2001 when the cougar was under warranty in years and mileage. When the defect surfaced, the cougar would not kick-over immediately, however this occurred very infrequently. At the time, there was no consistent problem to recognize and rectify. Over the ensuing months the problem continued to occur intermittently. At this point, i recognized there was a possible mechanical problem. The problem i was experiencing was caused by a defective flywheel. Its teeth were soft and the defect had worn away the starter. 5 months after purchasing this cougar, there was a huge power steering leak. Called around for someone to fix it, butdealer was the only choice.we were told it could be a bad pump and that would cost $450 to fix.they called back and said the whole gear was bad and had to be replaced and would cost us $700.we had no choice but complained to the dealer that rack and pinion gear should not go bad on a 2 year old car.we also contacted ford customer relations, who did nothing to help us.we want our money back. Dealer also failed to notify us of 5 outstanding recalls on this car.then, 2 days after picking it up fromsteering being fixed electrical system shorted out and stranded our 19 year daughter at 2 in the morning.this is directly related to one of the recalled items.the dealer should have fixed this during the 3 days when they had the car .

1. Car began to lose power and the steering wheel began to lock up and lights began flickering on the dash.2.the car stalled in the fast lane on a busy freeway.the consequence was a small truck rear-ended the back of the car and it was totaled. One person had busted lip intruck and one in the car had busted forehead and blackened eyes with back injuries and the other one had back and stomach extreme pains and legs.3. Nothing could be done at this point-the car always had problems.too bad, i was not aware of all of the recalls--maybe that would not have helped either.

Whenever you hit a puddle sometimes the water hits something under the car while driving the battery light comes on and the power steering goes away, i could not steer the car i had to slow down fast before hitting the curb, 4 or 5 min later the light went off and everything was fine. This has also happend on a car wash.
I have taken my vehicle in 4 different times for the same problems.the car boags down and stalls while driving.this has caused me to stall in traffic several times.the problem has still not been fixed in the 4 times i've taken it in.not to mention all the other small things.constant rattle in the dash and windows, battery light stuck on, trunk will not unlatch, and the dash lights will surge even after i've had the dash replaced.i am very upset with this car and even more with the lack of service being provided by the dealership!

I own a 1999 mercury cougar. I just bought the car in january of 2003 with 32,000 miles on the car. Two weeks after purchasing the car the alternator died, which is a common problem with this car, and the dealership replaced the alternator. But two or three weeks after that, my power sunroof broke, which is also a very common problem, and because the car was not under warranty anymore it cost me over $1200.00 with labor to fix. I have since learned that there are many cougar owners that have had the sunroof break because the 1999 and 2000 cougars were made with plastic rails that easily break. The 2001 and 2002 cougars were made with metal rails and work fine. The parts that you order now for the 1999 and 2000 cougars are metal, so my question is, why wasn't this a recall, and why should we all have to pay for a defective part that is very expensive and breaks only because it is poorly manufactured? when i bought the car i had no idea how much money i would have to put into fixing the stock parts, such as the alternator, sun roof, and fuel pump, and rear hatch door, which are also very common problems. *nlm
Electrical problems, car is almost 5 years old, just put in 3rd alternator; now, cannot pass emmisions, cannot find a problem.tons of electrical problems.

The battery seemed low on the car, indicated by interior lights not being very illuminated, but then dashboard lights started flashing and windows rolled up very slowly.i charged the battery for many hours and it took a charge, so i could get to the mercury dealer.it died when i got there and they were closed, so i had to jump it and move to a safe location to leave overnight.this had happened twice before in the past 2 1/2 years, so i new it was the alternator again!that's three alternators in2 1/2 years.this time i am out of warranty and am expected to pay $550 for a recurring problem that clearly will happen again.the dealer can not tell me why this is occuring, and ford "customer service" could care less.after researching this problem on the internet, it seems that many cougar owners have experienced this problem continually.i have also had to have the transmission replaced, as well as the motor for the sunroof.

Excessive wear of the front brake rotors and pads.upon accelerationvehicle pulls to the right.also, alternator fuse has blown twice, dealer has put in a larger fuse, but did not solve problem. Dealer has yet to determine the cause. *ml
Transmission surges and hesitates upon accelleration causing unexpected increases in speed; rear hatch will not open; brakes still grind after replacement; after door latches replaced, car now makes whining noice; starter replacement makes high pitched noise; coolant light comes on--dealer's solution is to overfill coolant level.

I first thought the problem was with the anti-theft disabling system.i soon found out that was not the case.the car does not start at least once a day.it makes a loud grinding noise when trying to start it.after a few minutes it finally starts.we took the car into the dealership to have it fixed.after stating that other cars had been in with the same problem the dealership proceeding to go out to the car to get more information.once they seen that it had 38000 miles they refused to fix it under warranty.that is so ridiculous.other cars have had the same problem, it is not a consumer caused problem. Obviously the car has a defect and i would like to have it fixed free of charge.

And even had someone from ford to investigate all of the problems i've had with my vehicle.they have been rude to me on several occasions, especially when i had questions about the repairs of my vehicle.something needs to be done about this.i would not recommend the purchase of a mercury cougar to anyone.

I have only owned this vehicle for about 4 months and have had many problems including brake lights not working and back wheel locking up. It was raining, i was driving down the freeway about 55 mph and suddenly the power steering went out completely, the heat/defrost stopped working and my battery light came on. I just installed a brand new battery just 6 days before incident, although this isn't the first time the power steering went out while raining. This time it was extremely scary due to the high speed i was driving and because the heat stopped working my windows started to fog up quickly causing my visibility to be reduced dramatically while trying to use all my strength to steer the car around a curve without hitting another vehicle. As soon as i was able to see an exit i got off freeway and car died completely driving up the off ramp. Thank god there wasn't any vehicles behind me i was able to pull over after waiting about half hour car started back up, power steering & heat was back on. I have 2 young kids and i'm scared to drive in this car with them.

Recall of brake pressure control. Ford service center states repair was done on 12-19-2000, but there is no records to confirm. In addition, the fuel system recall, ford states that there isn't one on my vehicle, however, my vechicle displays the same symptoms described under recall 04v421000 and the continuous check engine light. I have had all sensors repaired that came up in engine diagnostic testing . According to last test done, reads fuel is running lean but can't repair because no code appears for that to show where problem lies. I have had fuel system flushed to help remedy problem. Still having issues.

The engine made a very loud rattle and then stalled. The dealer stated the engine blew due to defective pistons and rods.
My car is a lemon.have had a new engine put in it 2 times because the rods spun. I have had the brake lights "fixed" 3 times, the alternator replaced 3 times, new catalytic converters twice. New power steering. Transmission done 3 times. Theres definantly more i just cant think of alllllll my repairs on this 1999 cougar. I bought it used and it has now 98000 miles cause i drive out of state.
When drivingat any speedcheck engine lightappeared on the dashboard intermittently.
I normally buy foreign made autos. But this car was gorgeous. It has become a living nightmare. A flywheel was replaced after several times telling the dealer that it made a horrible screeching noise as if the key was already started. The next problem is that i hit a pothole in detroit and ruined a rim plus tire. I just recently had to replace 2 more tires that just seem to wear out for no reason. I don't do a whole lot of driving. Last month they replaced the iac switch. Now i need to take it in because it rides like a raggedy truck. It shakes and will not hold the road. You can feel every crack in the street. My boyfriend has a 88 olds and i would rather ride/drive his car than this cougar. I still have 1 year on my lease and you can bet i will never by a ford/lincoln/mercury car every again. (tiresize: r16)( dot number:tire size: r16 )

The timing chain failed & broke, resulting in extensive damage to the car's engine.car lost power & stalled on a state highway.according to independent reports from (2) repair shops, premature failure of the timing chain was indicated, resulting in thousands of dollars worth of damage to the engine - heads & valves.
While driving at 40 mph driver heard a loud squealing noise.driver pulled over andparked, and then vehicle was towed to dealer. Mechanic stated that motor needed replacing.
My 1999 cougar was taken in for a tune up recently.the spark plugs were replaced with new ones.approximately 3 weeks later one of them blew because ford made a defective spark plug thread.now i cannot get it fixed because a ford specialist must go through the engine to repair and it will cost $1300.00.i thought getting a tune up was a good thing!
While driving, engine stalled due to a defective oil pump installed on vehicle, massive oil leakage due to failure.
The engine has been replaced 2 times and the oil filter has blown off the engine.
While starting the vehicle ,the check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the driver that the computer code needed to be reset and reset it twice. However, the problem still occurs at this time. Please provide further details.*tc

Oil filter combusted due to pressure.engine has been destroyed!!!car is a year and a half old with 24,500 miles.i have a number of problems that have occurred with this car.i have ignored due to they come and go.such as rattling noises from the trunk, cigarrette lighter is dead, gas gauge doesn't read properly all the time, lights illuminate for rear light out, airbags, coolant, next time start up car they are out??? i had a saturn for 5 years never had a problem.i have this cougar for a year and a half and look at all these problems. 1999 mercury cougarseat back failure during rear-end collision.cougar stalled on busy freeway ending in rear totaled car collision.the driver's seat went completely down and upon seatsin the backseat.this was two defects.injuries were neck and back pains, three bumps to the head resulting in two black eyes. My adviceto all 1999 cougar owners-get rid of the car, by way of junkyard-this is an extremely dangerous vehicle andone will not know untilan accident happens.
The engine has been replaced 2 times and the oil filter has blown off the engine.
When starting the car it's making a grinding noise. Finally, took vehicle in and it was the flywheel and starter. Dealer fixed it. Had the vehicle for two weeks after repairs, and it still didn't start.when turning the ignition key, it would either make a humming sound or nothing at all.dealer kept it for 3 weeks and put over 100 miles on the vehicle, and still can't find what is wrong.
Consumer drove vehicle into the shop. There was a knocking noise coming fromunderneath the vehicle.technician told her thatmotor was gone inside of the vehicle.
I own a 1999 mercury cougar 2.5l duratec v6 (vin l) currently with 55,000 miles.at 49,135 miles, i had the oil changed at its regular interval (3,000 mi) at midas service.at close to 52,000 miles, upon exiting a sweeping right-hand off-ramp, the 'oil' lamp flickered on and off for a few seconds.several weeks later, the engine developed a light 'ticking' noise that grew into 'knocking.'the local ford dealer, independence ford, charged $60 to tell me several hundred dollars worth of tests would be required to determine the source of the noise.i asked the service manager, [xxx], if he or ford was aware of problems concerning oil starvation due to 'crank whip' orpressure loss during right-hand cornering.he began listing existing known problems with cougars.being familiar with the technical service bulletins, i suggested he was reading the list of tsb's to me.he became evasive and said there was no problem with the engines.i had spent several hours researching the oil starvation problem known to exist with the duratec engines, including changes ford made in 1999 and in 2003 to reduce the occurrence of bearing failure due to oil starvation as a result of crank whip and poor oil circulation.i read of owners with failures as low as 3,000 and 11,000 miles.i have contacted both ford and mercury via mail explaining the symptoms and problem with my vehicle, but have not received response.in the meantime, my vehicle was diagnosed by an independent repair facility as having damaged connecting rod bearings.i must now absorb the expense of engine failure at less than 55,000 miles.ford has made production changes to reduce the incidence but refuses to offer repair and replacement for existing owners of the faulty engines.a market has developed, including revised oil pans incorporating baffles, to offer possible remedy to the problem.i sincerely appreciate anything nhtsa can do to help owners like myself who are the victims of this faulty design. *nlminformation redacted pursuant to the free

Since moving to texas in 2001 i have had repeated problems with the check engine light coming on.i have spent in excess of $5,000 trying to get this fixed.i just picked up my car again today after spending another $700+ to get the problem fixed.i only went approximately 3 miles when the light came on again.i am trying to find out what the problem is.i feel this is a recall item and would like something done concerning this problem.i have been told it was a weather issue, etc.it seems no one seems to know what the problem is.help!!!!

Car stalls for no apparent reason.it will lose power as if out of gas. Rpm's will rev up high and car will act as if it is in neutral. While traveling at 70mph , the car would hesitate severely and act as if it was going to shut down.it would continue to drive , but speed would get slower and slower butthe rpm's would keep going up and down.when car completely stalls , it becomes very difficult to get it started again. Once it is started, it will drive fine for about another week.the car has stalled at different speeds and totally unexpected.it has happened four times and the car becomes hard to control in traffic. The dealer has been unable to duplicate the problem, therefore unable to fix it.other minor problems have been the hatch not opening due to leaking strut. Took 2 atempts by the dealer before problem was solved.cd player went out and sun roof would not open.

Engine management computer malfunction, causing engine to stall while idling, and to cut out/stumble during acceleration. Car has been to dealership four times for service, has not been remedied. Ford service technician has verified the faults and can come up with no better than a lame "it checks out ok on the computer."
Engine light came on i thaugh it would be an electrical problem, it was not.the car would jump and accelerate when stoping at traffic lights and stopped traffic when i would press on the gas lightly. Dealership said it would be $2000. To fix. I did not extend my ford warranty. They said there was a hidden warranty with the engin and that i would have to pay $500.

Bought car at dealer on 02/05/01 since then i've had to repair car on too many occasions. Here some of the repairs i've had to do on this car ever since i bought it. On 3/01: brakes, 10/01: dealership replaced battery and performed a recall,12/01: dealership replaced alternator, 05/02: brake pads, 04/04: water pump belt, 09/04: replaced batter, 10/11/04: replaced alternator and belt, 10/14/04: replaced positive battery terminal, 12/04: replaced radio, 02/06: replaced motor mount, 01/07:replaced battery, 02/07: replaced strut, 02/08: replaced shock absorber, 10/08: replaced battery, 04/09: replaced bearing, transmission & anchor engine mount and don't have the date but also had to replace the windshield wiper motor.these repairs are what i have in receipts yet for example i have replaced the motor mounts more than once.currently the following areas of my vehicle do not function: the horn no longer works, cruise control is not functioning, the air conditioner no longer heats, & the brake light of my vehicle remained lit when the vehicle was on and now have failed to turn out (lamp socket is burnt).
When the brake pedal is depressedthe brake lights do not iluminate if the pedal is not pushed hard.i can push the brake pedal hard enough for the vehicle to come to a complete stop from 60 mph, and to remain at a stop and the lights do not iluminate.i went to the dealer and we tried another cougar on the lot chosen at random, and it was worse than my vehicle.after checking that car they put it right back on the sales lot. They then came to the conclusion that they would have to contact ford to see what the factory had to say about the problem.from our check of a random car it appears that this problem may affect a large number of cars.i think this is a very serious problem, when you can bring a vehicle to a complete stop from speed and the brake lights are never activated. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, because i feel this is so serious.

The contact owns a 1999 mercury cougar.while driving 45 mph, the exterior lights became dim.the exterior lights also dimmed immediately when the contact began driving.the failure occurred intermittently.the headlights and instrument panel lights also flickered and dimmed, but then illuminated to full capacity.the failure is directly related to nhtsa campaign id number 01v031000 (electrical system:battery:cables); however, the dealer stated that the vin was not included.the current mileage was 80,000 and failure mileage was 79,700.

I've got a repeatable failure that happens when i make a left turn or go up an incline while i have less than a quarter of a tank of gas in my vehicle. The car will lose power and start to stutter, and has completely stalled a couple times. I haven't had any parts replaced yet, but i found other people with this problem and an extended coverage program offered by the manufacturer that they say doesn't apply to my vehicle. This has also been nhtsa campaign id as well. According to the emails with customer service the program was for cars manufactured may 25, 1999 through november 30, 2001. My car was manufactured on may 24, 1999. I questioned if the one day difference in manufacture could actually exclude my vehicle, if my vehicle could actually be affected, and whether there was some way to tell if the affected part was installed in my vehicle (possibly by part number or serial number of the installed part). There are apparently at least several different parts (the pre extended program part, the bad part being replaced during the program, and the one replacing the bad part. I have requested but not been given a way to tell the difference between the different parts.
1999 mercury cougar - right fuel tank strap failure.while traveling at highway speed, i suddenly heard a noise of something metallic slapping against the underside of the vehicle.after pulling over to investigate, i discovered that the right side fuel tank strap had completely corroded thru and had broken, allowing the fuel tank to drop down slightly on the passenger side.once i was able to jack up the car to examine, i discovered that the coating on the metal strap had cracked off and that the metal strap was corroded so badly that the metal strap had torn from the weight of the fuel tank, allowing the strap to drop to the pavement.i replaced the strap with a universal replacement strap because i was told that the item would be a special order item and that i could not be guaranteed as to when it would be received.to prevent corrosion of the replacement strap, i primed and painted it with a rust inhibiting paint.i fear that if i had backed up while the strap had been broken (if i had been unaware of the condition) that the strap could have caught on the pavement and been forced up into the gas tank, possibly puncturing it, or that the gas tank could have broken the remaining strap and ripped from the undercarriage of the vehicle, resulting in a potential fire condition.it concerns me that automakers are not required to use a stainless grade (non-corroding) material for critical items such as critical suspension components, brake lines, or in this case, fuel system related components, such as tank support straps.i have never heard of a car of this age having this type of problem but found thru my search online that failure of the right fuel tank strap seems to be a bit too common on the 1999+ mercury cougars.

There is recall on mercury cougar 1999 v6 for a fuel filter that may cause hesitation, stalling, surging. Over fifty times has this occurred nearly causing serious accidents over five times. The car has been given a "tune up" to eliminate that as the cause. The only other cause could be the fuel filter which has been recalled as per recall 04v421000 nhtsa.i have contacted ford and ford dealerships and they refuse to deal with the problem. If this has happened on other vehicles then it is the cause on this vehicle whether they want to admit to that or not. This needs to be fixed before someone gets seriously injured or killed.
1999 mercury cougar engine hesitates, losses power and bucks when attempting to accelerate.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer after having the vehicle for 4 days, they still had not made a determination as to what was causing the engine to hesitate.the consumer took the vehicle to a local mechanic and was told the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, however after the replacement the problem continued.the consumer took it back to the mechanic and the inlet manifold runner control was replaced, but that did not resolve the problem either. The consumer took it back again and was told they hadno clue as to what the problem was. After doing some research , the consumer came across a bulletin which described the problem he was experiencing and a resolution, which was a defect in the fuel delivery module.the consumer discovered the vehicle identification number was not included in the program.

Recall campaign 04v421000 concerning fuel system gasoline. Delivery.i am experiencing these exact problems, which are believed to be present also, by my local dealer, where i showed the car to a mercury trained mechanic. However, ford/mercury (ron bluestein/ford executive offices, id # 2170, phone 800 521 4140) refused to cover repairs due to vin .i strongly disagree and fell that my car's safety was in question.on certain passenger vehicles, contamination of the filter in the fuel delivery module (fdm) could reduce, and eventually block the flow of fuel to the engine.this may cause engine hesitation, loss of power, surging, and other similar symptoms. Sometime, the filter may become sufficiently blocked to cause the engine to stall, which could result in a crash.

*nlm
While driving vehicle stalled.dealer told the consumer to keep the fuel tank at least half full until the fuel pump could be be replaced.
Fuel pump failure is similar to the one on the recalled focuses. I had my fuel pump fail on the highway going 70 miles an hour and was almost run over. After looking at some car forums i have come to find that this is not an uncommon problem for this car.some people have replaced this pump 2-3 times before breaking 100k miles.
The car stalled in the middle of the street and engine could not be started.it had to be towed in to the nearest dealership.diagnosis: fuel pump failure.cost: $500.two weeks later i found out that mercury had a recall on fuel pumps, however my vin number was not included in the recall.i suppose it's just a big coincidence that my car experienced the same exact symptoms and the fuel pump failed at the same time as the recall.mercury to this date has not reimbursed me the $500.*la

I was commuting to work in mountainous terrain and while traveling uphill, the car lost power and then the engine quit completely. I was barely able to roll the car out of the highway before another vehicle approached the blind curve from my rear and swerved to avoid the broken down car and myself.i conducted an internet search after finally getting the car restarted and returning to home that evening and discovered that ford motor co. Had initiated a program to alleviate the symptoms the car was experiencing. Although the car behaved exactly as described under the manufacturers description of potential problems(including surging, hesitation, loss of power, and engine stalling), i was told after contacting the selling dealer and ford that my car did not qualify for any assistance because it fell outside of the production window of the vehicles they had identified as having similar problems. This problem has recurred 4 times since the initial incident while driving on inclined surfaces but i do not attempt to drive the car on the mountain roads.the extended coverage program 04n02 is the program i referred to when contacting both the dealer and ford motor company. As a result of this, i am unable to use this car to commute to work and have resorted to the use of rental or borrowed vehicles.
There is a pin in my passenger door that falls out every few months or so.(about 3-5 times since it first happened)we just hold the door up and hammer the pin back into place when it happens and it stays for a few months.we've tried a few different kinds of clips to hold it in place to no avail.the door falls 1/2 way off and just hangs there.it hasn't happened while the car is moving...just when the car is parked and a passenger opens the door.the car was also sold to me with a bad bearing on the rear passenger tire...not sure if that's normal either around 40,000 miles.also, my fuel pump burned out around 46,000 miles...not sure if that's normal for a car or not.
I am the owner of a 1999 mercury cougar. I purchased the vechicle new and have maintained all service requirements. At this point, the vechicle still has less than 45,000 miles (i do not drive all that much). However, since purchasing this car i have had to replace twice the alternator and battery, all the brakes, tires, and now the fuel pump has gone out. I understand that there is a recall on the fuel pumps, so i contacted ford, but they informed me that my cougar is not in among those on the list. However, my car has the exact symptoms that are listed by ford; it stalls and will not run. In ford's statement, they indicate that they will replace the failed fuel pump, but they are not willing to do that for me. Becuase of this failed fuel pump situation, i have had to have my car towed twice and have been stuck in some very inclement winter weather situations. I am now facing a $640 fuel replacement bill which i do not feel that i should have to pay given the current recall. I have never before complained about what i consider to be excessive repairs, but this latest failure has me livid. I do hope that others do not face this same situtaion and that ford will reconsider its position to not cover the cost of my fule pump replacement.
Brand new vehicle that is 5 months old and has less than 8,000 miles with full gas tank and no warning what so ever suddenly the car shook, and sputtered the check engine light came on and the vehicle died and had to be towed.the vehicle was then at the dealer for 5 days and they determined it was the fuel pump and replaced it. Four days after getting the vehicle back while alone in the car on the way home from work late in the evening, the car again suddenly started to sputter, and shake, the check engine light came on and then the car died again. Will now have to be towed into the dealer again.it is unacceptable and frightening thatwe have a brand new vehicle which we are now without for the remainder of the thanksgiving weekend to go anywhere as the dealer is closed and have to worry whether or not will suddenly get stranded late at night because the vehicle fails without warning.this is not an acceptable situation.

Yes, i purchased my vehicle in july of 2017. When i test drove the vehicle, everything seemed perfectly fine. Yet, the day i received it, i went to the gas station to fill up. Upon returning home, 1 mile., the engine light came on. I was told by the seller all was perfectly fine. Drive the car, it will be fine. I was concerned and i took the vehicle to my mechanic. After running some diagnostic tests, i was told i needed a catalyic converter, repairs over $1500.00. I was reading the recalls for this vehicle and came acrosscampaign id# nhtsa 04v421000. The recall was for contamination of the filter i the fuel delivery mode(fdm) can reduce and eventually block, the flow of fuel to the engine. In which, can cause many problems. I have those problems with the vehicle. Upon starting, it revives up, then eventually slows down and almost kills. It sounds as if no gas is getting to the engine. Loss of power, stalling. My question is how i could find out if this recall was done to the vehicle. Where do i start. I realize its been more than 10years from the purchase of it new, and i didn't purchase new, but if the recall wasn't done...may i be entitled? the vehicle only has 68,000 miles on the engine. Is this the problem and has it now effected the catalyic converter?thanks greatly for your precious time. A reply would greatly be appreciated. Door latches are not catching.latches on both the driver's / passenger's side are not closing /securing properly.incident with both doors only happened since vehicle was repaired.
In august of 2004, the passenger side door on my 1999 mercury cougar became stuck in the closed position and the automatic door locks were disabled.there was a recall for the door latch for this vehicle (recall 99v226000).high humidity had caused damaged to the door latches, which were replaced as a result of the recall.the day my car door became stuck in the closed position had highs close to 100 degrees, which i believe was the cause of this malfunction.i was told by the manufacturer of my vehicle that this problem was corrected by the time my vehicle was built.however the recall took place 7 months after i purchased my vehicle in 1999.

Ive had problems with this car since i drove it off the lotalmost every month it is in the shop for the same reasons first the radio has been fixed twice and then finally replaced the speakers have been replaced and that has yet to solve the problem, my trunk release on my car has been worked on atleast 4 times and they still think it is not a problem but they dont open it every day either, starting in january of 2000 i called the dealership 6 or more times complaining about the brakes and every time they worked on it they said all brakes pulsate and squeek a little but low and behold a recall letter suprised me in the mail today, my sunroof was in the shop dont know the date because it was squeeking and the panel that surround the keys was loose they"fixed" but the day i got it out of the shop for getting the radio replaced the sunroof quit totally, just talked to them today and they said they have had several people with the same problem it appears that the wiring in the sunroof it worn out i asked if this was normal for a car that was a year old and they said it was just from being opened and closedbut im sorry its only a year oldthey said it is a 1200.00 dollar problem to fix without labor and couldnt garuantee that it wouldnt have to be replaced next year again .the alarm system randomly goes off and wont shut offits actually called a panic system but goes off like an alarm system after asking other cougar owners about theirs and comparing notes looks like we have all had the same things going wrong except a friend of mine has already had her engine rebuilt at 20,000 miles ------help me before mine goes out to. Thank you
Problems with vehicle's trunk coming unlatched from the inside. *mr the horn was also inoperative, the vehicle stalled, and there was a constant problem with the blower/fan.the consumer requested to be reimbursed for the repair cost of the blower. *sccthere was a recall regarding the heater blower resistor, however the dealer stated the vehicle identification number wasn't included in the recall.
The air conditioner was turned on. It failed to cool inside of vehicle, not working properly. The trunk fails to lock when closed. The locking mechanism is not holding the latch . Would need to jiggle the ignition key in the switch before it starts. The passenger side seat slides back & forth without locking into place. While backing up vehicle, it would make loud noises from the front end near wheels.
Could try to open trunk frominside of the vehicle, buttrunk will not unlatch. Consumer will need to opentrunk withkey.
Car sounds like it is falling apart when brakes are applied, steering makes loud sound when backing out of parking space, trunk won't open unless hit numerous times from remote or inside.

I was driving down an interstate road on the morning of july 3rd 2000. A considerable amount of rain had fallen on the road and it was still raining slightly the section of the road that i was on was completely straight. I was in the left lane doing about 55mph on the 65mph road when i felt the car lurch and begin to turn toward the left. I looked down at my instrument panel and noticed that my tachometer was on zero and my warning lights were all on. The car started to spin counterclockwise very quickly and crossed over three lanes of traffic where it finally crashed into a guardrail on the right side of the road. I was facing oncoming traffic when the car finally settled.
When driven it jerks when u take off and when it shifts, and it makes a clunk noise when i him hit a bump it is so bad my car goes the other way the rear end.
Mechanical problems with 1999 mercury cougar. *mr the vehicle died in the middle of traffic on three occasions.there were alternator and fuel problems.the consumer requested a credited amount of funds and reimbursement for the battery, brakes and additional expenses.other problem are as followed:the new wheels were defective (corroded and frozen), the brake sensor snapped off of the wheel, the cd player was skipping, the hatch would not release properly, the steering wheel would shake, the keyless entry with anti-theft was inoperative, there was rough idle, the transmission shifter would stick, the cup holder did not shut, the hood would not open, and the lights would dim and or brighten while the vehicle was in motion. *sc
1999 mercury cougar. Consumer states problem with transmission shifting into first and second gear, but will shift correctly if it is done manually. *tgw
Transmission having problems going into gear constantly slipping and catching gears when trying to drive only gets up to 30 mph
The speedometer jumps and at times does not work at all.this same problem has occurred at least 5 or 6 times in the past two years.the instrument cluster has been replaced each time.the intrument cluster installed last month was bad while driving it home from the dealership.it will probably have to be replaced at its next oil change.the vehicle is almost out of warranty and the dealer advised me that i would be responsible for any incidents after the warranty expires even with its history, and i was told by the dealer that they have seen this problem with other cougars.
While the car is running, my 1999 mercury cougar will shift from drive to neutral, to reverse, without ever releasing the lock. All it takes is slight pressure on the gear shift to change gears unintentionally. The dealer i just bought the car from 2 weeks ago, and ford tell me that it is normal for the gears to move from drive to neutral with no effort. The dealer said no harm is done. You are just driving down the road at 60 miles an hour when you bump the gear shift, and lose all acceleration until you move the gear shift back to drive. I can see a real safety issue there. And, considering that this is my 16 year old's car, i see a real safety issue.it also would shift from 2nd all the way to neutral without releasing the lock.
On 4 different occasionsvehicle will shut off suddenlyandwithout warning as though someone shut key off, and then everything locks up/ loss of power occurs, and cannot even shift out of gear. Dealer has replaced starter, but it did not fix defect.
There is a humming noise in the transmission that won't go away.also, there is a clanking noise whenshifting gears.
I have a 1999 mercury cougar, and have had it about 4 years now. I have had no problems with the car, except having to have the alternator replaced.i work 3rd shift (7p-7a) at a local hospital, and on my way home, my car started slipping in and out of gear.the car would go for a minute, then it would stop, and i would push the gas and the car would just rev up.i had a line of traffic behind me, so i as trying my best to get the car off the road. I finally got it into an empty parking lot and called to get some help.i was very tired from working a 12 hour shift and had to wait 2 hours for someone to come and get me.we got the car to a mechanic, which said that it was the transmission, and he then told me that he would drain the transmission, put new fluid in it, and see if that fixed the problem.to my very unfortunate news, the transmission has went out in my car.i am a full-time student and full-time working trying to make ends meet.due to the transmission going out in my car, i have missed classes, and it's becoming a headache trying to get to and from work, school, and other places i need to be.i was told that the 1999 cougars had a recall on the transmission and that i needed to find out about it.this is what i am doing now.i can't afford a new transmission, let alone a new car, while i'm trying to go to school.this whole ordeal has thrown me off, because there was nothing wrong with the car, and all of a sudden (in one day) the transmission went out.i hope this problem is resolved, and i get some help with fixing my car.i appreciate your time, and i hope that my problem is looked into.thanks, gina brook melton
While driving at about 70 vehicle will downshift on its own.if a vehicle was behind itmay have been runned over.
Brakes continue to grind even after replacement.transmission surges and hesitates upon acceleration causing unexpected increases in speed.transmission also slips in and out of gears randomly. All of these problems could lead to a serious accident.
I own a 1999 mercury cougar. I have maintained the vehicle per the service manual through the local mercury dealership. Sometime during early april 2005, i noticed that the car hesitated and jerked violently after about fifteen minutes of normal driving. We were able to drive the car in for service. The dealer "diagnosed" the problemandreplaced a part.the car continued to malfunction the very next day.i returned to the dealership andwas told that the problem was with transmission. I have hadthe transmission replaced by a local ford dealership. I am not sure whether the old transmission is available.
Vehicle towed twice, vehicle failed to be moved out of park. *cj
Automatic transmission failed completely in forward. Reverse still works. Several service bulletins noting a defect in the tranny have been posted. Car had 60k on it and had regular transmission services.
The vehicle did not shift correctly, it hesitated and surged when accelerated to pass other vehicle's, and there were no warning lights indicating a transmission problem.scc
Repeated issues on various dates.problem1:the vehicle alarm will randomly activate itself.it will go through it's 5 minute alarm process and then shuts itself down.then anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes latter it will set itself off again.it does not matter the location of the vehicle so that could rule out interference.problem 2:battery lamp illuminates in the higher rpm range and battery and alternator have been checked to be functioning properly.problem 3:there is a loud popping sound from the front driver's side when the car shifts to 2nd gear at full throttle.
When i originally reported the transmission was slipping they said it was fine, driving at 80mph and having your car drop to 20mph then 45mph then 60mph back to 20mph on the freeway is quite nerve racking, if this was during commute traffic i would of been killed.

While driving, the vehicle made a noise. The consumer immediately turned the vehicle off. When he restarted the vehicle and shifted into reverse, the vehicle failed to move.

I have had my car in twice (2 times for brake & transmission service)none of the problems that i have, had have been corrected.my brakes still scrub & my transmission still bucks, after these returns for service.i am very unhappy about the way my car is running.especially the brakes which are making me worry.i have had my car in on 9/17/1998 and 12/2/98 for these problems, among other problems, and the brakes and tranzmission problems still exist.i am not very happy with my 1999 mercury cougar and i will not buy one again, unless i know that ford has put their best in this car.sincerely, adria l. First transmission failed on the highway at 32,000 miles and was replaced under warranty second transmission failed at 82,000.
I own a 1999 mercury cougar which currently has 5700 miles. Theflywheel has failed ,resulting in complete replacement of the starter and flywheel.the problem began more than a year ago but was so intermittent that my mechanic could not reproduce the problem in order to diagnose.at this time the vehicle is being repaired.damaged parts will be retained for future inspection if needed.i conducted a websearch and found a website which contained many other owners of 99 cougars experiencing the exact same problem, even at the same approx. Mileage.the website is located at: ://www.carsurvey.org/viewcomments_review_5988.html.
The car was driving fine.i got in it, started it, and put it in reverse, and it didn't go.i put it back in park, then in drive, and i couldn't go forward because of the curb.so i put it in reverse again, eventually, i was able to pull back out of my parking spot, but it went back hard, and i could have hit another car if one was in the space behind me,and when i did, it was very stuttered movement.when i p went forward (drive), it had a rubbing sound, like something was rubbing on something.we haven't done anything to this car because we have no money to even tow it.i just bought this car 5 months ago.it has run very well until this day.
Transmisson has failed. I've taken my vehicle back to the dealer a month afteri purchased the vehicle to advised them of the jurking problem with the car also advised them that the coolant light will not go off.dealer has checked the vehicle and stated they could not find anything wrong. As of now i am not able to drive the vehicle. Was advised by sales rep that sold me the vehicle the extended warranty would be worked into mypayments however this is not stated in the contract. Not to mention the brakes grind when backing up in the vehicle they have been replaced on the vehicle 3 months ago and the brake light is flashing again. I was told by the dealer i would be responsible to pay $2700.00 to fix the transmission.
Car leased in 1999. Since then there have been several complaints, the radio shorting out, 2 same side/tire blow outs, trouble lights and transmission problems, brake noise and acceleration problems. In each and every case the response has been "we cannot reproduce the problem" hence, no fixes. Warrenty expired now the alternater needs to be replaced? comment from service department "it must have been defective". ???
While driving 20 mph transmission gear block blewout. This causedheavy vibration in the vehicle.consumer managed to pull over, and had the vehicle towed. The dealership will be notified.
Brake lights are not working. Also,it ishard to getvehicle in and out of gear.
Vehicle will only go into reveres gear. Dealer indicated this was caused by automatic transmission electrical failure.
Dt*: the contact stated the exterior brake lights did not illuminate at all, causing the vehicle to nearly get rear-ended while braking from traveling 70 mph.the vehicle was taken to a private repair shop, who determined that the wiring harness needed replacement due to a short circuit.there was a nhtsa recall #01v032000 pertaining to the brake light switch.the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.secondly, the engine hesitated while warming up, accompanied by a rough idle.the vehicle was not seen by a mechanic.
I have had numerous problems with my '99 cougar such as, failure of my pat system and computer system.i have had problems with my brakes which they can't seem to figure out the problem.i have had my starter replaced twice.i have had defects in several sensors, which is not under warranty that i had to pay a good amount of money for them to repair. My fan has even blown out.there is a burning smell whenever i turn on my heater that none of the dealers can't seem to smell.i also had to purchase a new radiator.when my computer went out my car was still under warranty but they made me pay for the repairs, parts, and labor out of my pocket.this is not all. The list goes on and on.i have complained to the dealership, ford motor co. And even had someone from ford to investigate all of the problems i've had with my vehicle.they have been rude to me on several occasions, especially when i had questions about the repairs of my vehicle.something needs to be done about this.i would not recommend the purchase of a mercury cougar to anyone.
Vehicle experienced severe leakage of transmission fluid through vent and up through dipstick, ejecting enough fluid with enough force to render vehicle inoperable within less than 5 minutes.this major leak occurred upon parking of vehicle, but may also have been taking place while driving. A ford-issued technical service bulletin reportedly recognizes the vent design and side cover design on this model as deficient/flawed and in need of replacement with newly designed parts (related service bulletin numbers may be: 99249, 12119, 985136 - i have not seen the actual tsb). Safety concerns are obvious; slipping/false shifting of transaxle while driving, slipping or failing to fully engage when departing a parked position, danger from leaked fluid itself, environmental contamination, etc. Ford motor company refused to repair this defect at its own expense.mine is a higher-than-normal mileage vehicle for this year, and may be only the first of many that will experience these dangers as they reach this level.out-of-pocket repairs for this defect are approximately $350-500 for the consumer; less than $25 in parts and 4-5 hours labor for the manufacturer.please contact me with any additional questions.
The vehicle would not shift out of gear when the brake were being applied.also, the rear brake light illuminated.the dealer was notified.the dealer informed the consumer that the vehicle was not covered under a recall.the switch had become hot and melted plastic from the housing around metal connector prone. *sc
The transmission axle light is on and the dashboard says odometr off then the transmission axle light comes on and the car shifts hard.this happened at 49,000 miles the dealer said i would need a new transmission. I replaced transmission, and now at 75,000miles the same thing is happening.this seems to be like there is some defective problem going on.i was very upset that the warranty didn't cover this as it happened over 36,000 miles but i refuse to have to again pay thousands of dollars for another transmission.

Transmission failed while driving.nlm
Loud grinding noise from the manual transmission occurs when car is down shifted to first gear coming to a stop, or shifted to first not being at a complete stop, the shift lever "pops out of gear" and admitting a very loud grinding noise. Preventing this would be coming to a complete stop from neutral, then after stopping completely proceed to engage clutch and put car into first gear. First gear sometimes hard to shift into, might be a shift linkage problem. Sounds like the manual transmission grinding with a loud winding squeal.
The consumer begun to drive, when she attempted to place the vehicle in 3rd gear, it did not.she had taken the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that she needed a new transmission.the consumer felt that this should not have happened with less than 60k miles.tsthe lowell dealer stated that the vehicle had a mazda transmission, and that the transmission had to be completely rebuilt with a new torque converter.scc

The air bags did not deploy either, so my head broke the windsheild. The lap portion of the seatbelt kept me from going all the way out, i had bruises on my abdoman from it.
While riding in the front passenger seat, i sneezed once. The seat belt did not loosen up any.result was left shoulder injury for about 5 months with therapy andbruised ribs that lasted for about a month.to avoid this, i pull the seat belt away from me whenever i have to sneeze or cough.

Passenger's seat will not lock in place unlessseat is positioned allway to the back closely torear seat .consumer states the seat if unlocked and moved foward will only relock when pushed all the way to the rear, then seat can be adjusted and locked from any position, the problem is that you can not lock the seat if anything is placed behind the seat,in trying to lock the seat consumer states she has the crush her grandchild's feet in the car seat, consumer states there is a strong to light gasoline odor, also gas pedal will stick in up position and need strong push to release, door locks automaticcalylock and unlock at any time, the locks were finally replaced and consumer was given an extended warranty, consumer states radio goes out and the display disappears when it is hot.
When the gas pedal is applied the seat moves slightly rearward, and when applying the brakes the seat moves slightly forward. Dealer says its the seat tracks that need to be replaced.
When installing the child seat in the rear seat, the consumer noticed that the rear seats incline which caused the child?s safety seat to incline. The consumer stated that, "four child seats had been tried in the rear seat and they all had the same problem.please provide any additional information.

I have replaced a set of brake pads on the front, the calipers were loose when replaced & i had to replace the rotor on the right & the rotor on the left now needs replaced. This does not seem like normal wear/tear. This car has been used mostly for highway travel. Thanks!

*sc
I bought a 199 ford mercury cougar and was in an accident on dec. 8th, 2006 when i tried to apply brakes they started moving on their own and the movement was braking up and down i was unable to stop and wrecked and i bought this vehicle from a car lot.this car constantly when cold does this and it also squeaks like there is too much pressure on the whole car, the brakes are still having that shuttering problem. Can this be fixed?-i bought the vehicle at the end of last year... It has since done the same things with the braking again and it scares me but it only does it when it is cold out ... Updated
Brakes continue to grind even after replacement.transmission surges and hesitates upon acceleration causing unexpected increases in speed.transmission also slips in and out of gears randomly. All of these problems could lead to a serious accident.
I own a 99 mercury cougar, original owner.my husband changed the front brakes and found the sensor was missing on the front passenger side. My husband called the dealership and spoke to one of the tech's, he said all 4 wheels should have a sensor.when i brought the car there today the service writer told me the tech compared it to another cougar and found no sensor on the right front. If a cougar has abs there will not be any sensors, so who knows what he was comparing it to.no brakes wear even. The only way i will be happy if someone sends me a picture of the braking system.my husband has been a truck and car tech. For 30 years and he said all four wheels should have a sensor. Who are they kidding.
The front and rear brake disc's are nothing but a total problem.rear brakes were replaced at 30000 miles. The front at 38000 miles. Now the fronts have to be replaced again at 52000 miles. It is about time for ford to build a reliable car or just quit making cars.
This is the second time i filed a complaint, i have heard nothing back ! istarted having problems with the braking system its bumping the gas pedal up and down when trying to stop which in turn caused me to be in a car crash in december 2006 in clinton county, ohio. There is a recall and it needs to be fixed asap~! i also feel that someone should contact my home phone listed on contact form and let me know what's going on with this mess~! you can drive the dumb car and see what i am talking about for all i care, just please contact me either by phone or by email at least . Thank you very much for your time.
Car sounds like it is falling apart when brakes are applied, steering makes loud sound when backing out of parking space, trunk won't open unless hit numerous times from remote or inside.
While traveling onhighway andapplyingbrakesanti-lock brake system will lock up. Dealership is aware ofproblem.
When applying brakes there was a grinding sound, and vehicle would vibrate while stopping.vehicle has been in dealer's shop on several occasions, and problem was still occurring. Dealer informed consumer that nothing else could be done. Feel free to provide further details.
While traveling, slowed down, and when depressing brakepedal vehicle would not gain speed. Technician stated that right caliper malfunctioned.please provide furhter information.
Vehicle only has abs on driver's side and standard brakes on passenger's side. Please provide any further information, and vehicle identification number.
It has been in the shop four times for brake problems. The car shakes after 3,000 miles and the rotors need turning which costs 300.00 each time.
Panic button went off on my mistake but alarm would'nt shut off had to get replaced, hatch wouldn't open properly, i had my brakes replaced 3 times because of squealing noise.and these windshield wipers for the fourth time now .
Brake pedal is normal when applied, but there is a vibrating and pulsating feeling infront end when the brakes are applied. Also, extended stopping distance. Dealer has been contacted.
While driving on a 4-lane highway, lights on the dashboard lit up and engine died. Then, consumer lost control of the vehicle.withno brakes or steering vehicle started to spin out of control and hit a guardrail at about 55mph.consumer said it was a engine problem. Airbags did not deploy. *ml
Complete loss of all brakes due to "never before seen" explosion of abs master cylinder
While traveling at 45 mph vehicle suddenly came to a sudden stop on its own. Vehicle was takento the dealer, wheredealer indicated theat bolts fell out which caused brakes to lock up..
Shortly after owning the car, i noticed that brakes seemed insufficient for the vehicle.i took it to the dealer a few times to get checked, but they denied any thing being wrong.while driving when the brakes are applied, the vehicle does not stop at a sufficient time.i also had to buy several tires since the purchase date, because the tires would get leaks by simple road debris such as glass and metal pieces.i reported my problems in person and by phone to the dealer i bought from, but they would not give me any information about the car's history.they only stated that all necessary changes were made in december the month before i bought the car.i also told them about the shifting in the steering wheel when driving, but they disregarded the complaint about the steering and the inappropriate stopping of the vehicle. Abs brakes light is on and vehicle jerks at a slow stop and at fast stop. Also, there is a grinding noise coming from the brakes, and the back brakes aren't stopping the vehicle.
Reporting this as it is a us manaufactured car and is sold in the us and can't find evidence that ford/mercury are taking action. No safety defect listed in summary.
Vehicle been experiencing ongoing problem with unnecessary noise. Whenever brakes were applied in a sudden stop, itresulted in extendedstopping distance. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on seven occasions. Thisalmost causedseveral vehicle collisions.
Abs light/friction light comes on, dealer reset sensors.

The engine will kill without any indications at high speeds of 50+ mph.when attempt is made to hit the brakes or steer, they both lock up and that is when i discover that the car is dead.luckily, i never needed to use my brakes or steering when it happened, i coasted through traffic while having to turn the ignition off and then on again.the dealership has had it for two weeks, they have had the vehicle fail for them, yet it still reads as if there is nothing wrong with it on all of their diagnostics.it is under warranty and ford is not offering to replace or reimburse me for the automobile.they actually told me to come pick it up and drive it till it happened again.should traffic had been slightly different when this happened to me, i could be dead, my baby could be dead and whomever i hit could be dead.yet ford is taking little responsibility for it.
Consumer was traveling 40mph & had brake failure.consumer had to use the emergency brake & move off of expressway. Dealer determined the abs pump module sprung a leak & lost of all hyfraulic brake fluid.the warrantyexpired because of mileage.abs booster pump, master cylinder and other components also replaced. Vehicle had to return for repairs within 24 hours of picking up vehicle after initial repairs.*ml

On 8-01-00, with a california highway patrolman as a witness, the brakes on my grand daughters car failed completely (pedal to floor), upon pumping the pedal the brakes then locked up and the car went into an uncontrolled skid striking a stopped vehicle.this happened on the freeway in a construction zone and we are unsure of the vehicle speed at the time of impact.she was traveling at approximately 45 mph at the time of the initial brake failure.fortunately no one was injured (although my grand daughter's head did strike the windshield) and very little damage was done to either vehicle.both front tires now have severe cuts and abrasions across their width, approximately 6 to 8 inches long, where the newly formed grooves in the highway shredded the tires upon brake lockup.failed components:1) brakes - complete failure, then severe lockup.2) air bags - neither the driver nor passenger air bags deployed upon impact.3) selt belts - seat belts failed to lockup upon impact.the chp officer, who was sitting in the construction zone area, stated that he saw the entire incident and expressed his concern that with the severity of the impact that the air bags had not deployed. The brake rotors, calipers and pads on this vehicle were replaced and/or rebuilt by ford under warranty at 32k miles.we have so far been unsuccessful in contacting ford/mercury about these problems, and the dealers seem to be at a loss on how to check the failed components.their attitude is one of disbelief since the cars were not severly damaged.when will it happen again?
The pcrv failed prior to recall notice 00v-075 resulting in 2 accidents, the air bags failed to deploy during both accidents.nlm
When putting vehicle into reverse and applying the brakes, there is a loud squeaking noise coming from the vehicle.
Since purchase of vehicle brakes have continually experienced squeaking and grinding noise, tsb #12260 states the cause may be from the silver dacromet coating on the rotors, which are embedding itself into the pads, no current repairs to rectify at this time.
Serpentine belt slips when driving in rain causing a loss in power steering and all warning lights coming on inside of car. There are various reports about this problem.......#2 front brake pads are wearing out way to early, and also had front rotors replaced.

When turning a corner onwet pavement, the steering wheel /column locks up for a brief moment.
While standing outside of vehicle withwindows rolled down when door closed and automatically locked.consumer noted this was not a feature of vehicle.key failed to unlock the door, consumer reached insidevehicle to manually unlockdoor. Dealer stated if a new alarm system was put in to replace the old one, problem might be corrected.air conditioner turns on and off.radio will not come on at times.motor will die out.alarm went off, door lock by themselves.key will not crank vehicle at times.vehicle jumped and jerked almost hitting consumers sister who was standing in front of the vehicle.
In rain, if you hit a puddle water splashes, hits the battery,& the power steering dies.dealer says must wait for manufacturer to send recall notice.has happened many times, almost caused accident twice!
While still under warranty, power steering would fail after driving through any water, even very small puddles. Would hear screeching noise, power steering failed for 20 second or so, nearly crashed several times. Local dealer could not find a problem when i took in for repair. Recently, warranty expired, experienced complete failure of power steering. Power steering gear replaced for $1000. Still lost power steering in puddles after repair. Needs splash guard similar to mercury mystique, see mercury tsb 97-11-2 tech service bulletin. Severe safety hazzard! should be recalled!!
Power steering fails when driving in the rain and puddle is driven through, causing loss of control of vehicle.battery alert lights on dashboard.this defect first surfaced in june of 1999, and was called a "serpentine belt" failure and repaired . The problem has now returned and causes a serious loss of control of auto.

Vehicle experiencing a momentary loss of steering when driving over a water puddle, and intermittently causing malfunction toinstrument panel lights.dealer / manufacturer notified, and unable to locatecause.both side mirrors fell off.the cd and the radio are not operational.the radiator hose broke after 2 months of purchasing the vehicle.the back window wiper failed.the sun roof failed.this vehicle had numerous mechanical problems.
Whenever you hit a puddle sometimes the water hits something under the car while driving the battery light comes on and the power steering goes away, i could not steer the car i had to slow down fast before hitting the curb, 4 or 5 min later the light went off and everything was fine. This has also happend on a car wash.
Onwet road conditionspower steering will lock up intermittently.vehicle was taken to dealership,it was determined this was normal operating procedure for this vehicle.
Steering tie rod broke while turning at low speed. Bolt sheared off. Would of been major accident if at higher speed. Lost all steering control.
When turning key in ignition there is a grinding noise, sometimes vehicle won't start. Tookvehicle to dealer, and dealer replaced bb valves, and cleaned engine.this did not correct the problem. Also, loose outer tie rods. .
Rack & pinion.loss of fluid.
Power rack and pinion leakage occurred and rack needed to be replaced.the warranty 3 yrs. Or 36,000 mi. Had expired according to dealer.$800.00 and 15 months later a "clunking" noise is coming from the steering wheel during parking maneuvers.apparently, they only warranty the part for 12 months.
While driving the power steering rack broke, causing loss of control. Cause unknown.please give any further details.

The plastic sunroof transport mechanism has broken for the second time during the life of this car (i am the only owner).the first incident occurred early in my ownership and was covered under warranty.dealership that fixed it the first time has refused to fix it again citing a 12 month warranty.this problem is a well known design defect in the 1999 and 2000 model year mercury cougars and was addressed in the 2001 model year design.the cost for replacement parts is unconscionable considering the facts regarding this well known problem.i believe that clear knowledge of these issues of the ford motor company and the industry as a whole should have necessitated a recall long prior to this and because there isn't a recall i am filing this complaint.

Moonroof on a 99 cougar doesn't work. Wasn't much of a problem until the roof flew up and cracked the windshield of the person behind me.
1999 mercury cougar leaks water into hatch area directly onto the interior exposed electrical wiring and connections for tail lights and hatch release.dealership cannot determine source of leak and therefore cannot repair.mercury will not release blueprints of sheet metal layout to help in determining where water leak might be originating.neither did mercury cover diagnosis and will not cover repair even if problem source was identified.significant water inside the vehicle and directly on exposed electrical components could easily result in a catastrophic fire hazard and loss of life.
*sc
Rear driver's side weather strip ripped, and consumer was not able to open door.has had weather strip replaced 5 times, original strip was okay. It was just leaking, but the replacement ones are the ones that keep ripping.
I have always had my car washed and rust proofed during the winter ever 2 weeks. Last december the paint under the bottom of both the drivers and passenger doors started having the paint bubble up on both rocker panels. It started bubbling up then curling and the pain started coming off. Ive seen many other cougars with this same problem and feel it is due to a defect in the paint that was used or something missing from the paint job that was done
The center console is designed poorly.it flops around while in motion.*jg

When making a right hand turn, the contents my cup in the cup holder (usually hot tea) spills into my driver's seat when making a right hand turn.30-35 mi p/hr is the minimum speed that i've noticed.this distraction causes me to take my eyes off the road to straighten the cup to stop the spillage.at times i've found myself swerving a bit in the turn because of the "initial shock" of feeling my hot beverage on my thigh.

*nlm

Persistent high pitched whine comes thru the speakers in the car. Noise intensifies with more gas. Told it was altenator but now is said to be "normal". Gromets on the emergency brake cables were left off during assmebly of the car. Dealership neglects consumer in response to fixing these problems.

Due to vibration in steering, i had my tires rotated and balanced in may, 2001.one tire was found to have "thrown" a belt, a defect in the tire.upon contacting bf goodrich it was found that the nearest tire inspector/adjuster was 90 miles from my hometown.i set an appointment for approximately 1 week later.in the meantime i experienced a blow-out of that tire and had to have it patched.according to the inspector/adjuster, the patch deemed any warranty void and no adjustment was made on a new tire.then in september, 2001 i again noticeed similar vibration.i took the vehicle to another tire dealer to have the tires rotated and balanced.another of the tires was found to have "thrown" a belt, which again was said to be a defect in the tire.2 of the 4 original equipment tires experienced the same problem/defect.i contacted bf goodrich with my concern from a safety standpoint but was told as long as the other 2 tires were ok they can only make an adjustment on the current defect issue, priovided i don't have another blow-out in the meantime! (tiresize: p215/50r16)
Tire has continuously lost air since day one.it has been back to the dealer at least three times for this problem, each time theyfind no constantproblem.once they stated that a patch was leaking.the tire is so thin in spots that a 1/4" screw punctured it, thus the patch. That was not the problem.the vehicle spends more time at air pumps that gas.now i had it aligned and balanced, wherei was informed that both front tires are separating.i have long contended there is a problem.i have complained to ford and never received a reply.the tires are now on the rear, and i will take it back to the dealer, i also expect to get a major run around.the dealership i take it to is not where i purchased it.i am taking it to holman lincoln mercury in hollywood, fl. I have not taken it to the selling dealership due to distance.any advise? (tiresize: p215/50r16)
After regular tire rotation at 28,000 miles, the car started to pull to the right (the side where the defective tires were on), the steering was jerky and an audible thrumming could be heard.it was noticeable as slow as 10 mph and grew increasingly worse as the vehicle sped up.when we had the vehicle inspected at three different locations, they all concluded that tire separation was the cause and was the possible cause of the car being out of alignment.we corrected the alignment and purchased four new tires (yokohama) and the problems are gone.( dot number: w2b0 tire size: 215/50r16 )
Tread completely separated from sidewalls.only sidewalls remained on wheel.dealer indicated that there was a hole in the tread but unclear whether hole occurred before or after separation. While driving and exiting off highway consumer noticeda wheel hadcracked which caused tire blowout. This problem has occurred two times.
The tires on this car were not severly worn or cupped in any way.i took my car home and roughly a week later a buldge about the size of a half dollar appeared on the right front tire, luckily my freind caught it before i did as we were about to go on a trip and it could have been bad.i took the car to the dealership and then to firestone dealer, both said i had hit a pot hole, speaking it was my new car, i know i hadnt.the dealership and firestone dealer said to just replace this tire.so i reluctantly bought a new set of gta02 for my car (like an idiot) and then i go home and get on the internet.i found that the size up from mine have been recalled for something quite similar.not only that but i have found many new focus, contour, and cougar owners who have faced the same problem.i just want to be sure since i will now start to travel back and fourth five hours one way that i will be safe. Thanks. (tiresize: 215/50r/16)
The first time the wheel cracked while exiting interstate and running over a small pothole.thought it was something my daughter did.the second time a few months later, another one cracked in the same location on the wheel and caused the tire to blow out.checked with the dealer who refused to take any action or even investigate any chance of malfunction of wheels.several months later when having the car serviced, was told the other 2 wheels were bent causing the car to vibrate while driving at 55 to 60 mph.
While on interstate 10 a vibration started, stopped and looked several times and didn't find anything, when i exited the interstate it appeared that i had a flat tire, when i pulled into a gas station the tire appeared to be inflated, upon further investigation i found a large section of the steel belt/tread was missing and there was bits of metal showing through side of tire.at this time i could hear air beginning to escape from the tire.i had to have the tire replaced.i have tried to deal with firestone and have gotten no where.

This is a very poorly designed cup holder. I have not gotten into a accident but have come close. To use it you must hold the cup or it will flip over and spill on you because of the design. It is simple unsafe to have to hold a cup in the cup holder while making turns with a manual transmission. It is not possible to shift steer and hold the beverage in the cup holder at the same time. If you do not hold the cup holder you drink will spill on you causing serious problems the least of which is lack of attention to the road and an accident. Please investigate this i know it sounds trivial but if you look at one of these 99 cup holders you will see the problem that it causes and how if will cause accidents.
Cupholder spills while turning right or going around curves to the right. Has caused slight to moderate loss of control of vehicle.a couple of occasions were near collisions.one of which being a near head-on, also the occasion in which most control was lost.
Engine check light remains on while driving. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.
Cup holder tips over during right hand turns and spills liquid into lap of driver which takes the drivers concentration off of road.this could result in vehicle crash, property dammage, death, etc.dt
I have problem withtransmmition shifting 1st to secondchanges at 3000rpm butwhen i change park to drive shakes motor bad , one of the wires start smoking i like i puttape around wired burnd. Temperature it doesn't show but when i open the hood the car is very hot every time i tried driving it at freeway overdrive light starts blinking i likei paid to get it fix and still does the same.

The cupholder had a 12 oz cup of coffee in it on my way to prom.the coffee spilled on my rented tux.since then, it is estimated i have spilled some type of beverage 100 times.the cup holder is extremely flimsy and weak.any right hand turn results in a spilled drink in my lap.i'm quite sick of it.ford replaced the cupholders in 2000 becuase of so many complaints.they want $200 dollars to put a new cupholder in my car.i think there should be a recall before someone burns themselves and causes an accident and kills someone.
The cupholder that came stock with my 1999 mercury cougar is definitely a safety hazard. I work at intel, where safety is our number one priority. When in use, anything that is set into the cupholder ends up on the drivers lap in the event of a right hand turn. This has almost caused accidents for me, on top of ruining my clothing. These cupholders were replaced on the 2000 model year, but those of us with the 1999 ended up with unsafe equipment. I think ford needs to recall the poorly engineered part to prevent future injuries.
Cup holder continually spills drink during regular lh or rh turn.has nearly resulted in an accident on several occasions (through lunging to catch spilled drink and losing control of vehicle)has also damaged seating fabric.currently drive with only one hand on wheel while completing a turn in order to support drink.this is an accident waiting to happen.most other owners of same type car are in agreement on this fact.ford has changed design in current 2001 model to address problem - problem acknowledged internally.previous years should be recalled as well.
Moonroof on a 99 cougar doesn't work. Wasn't much of a problem until the roof flew up and cracked the windshield of the person behind me.
This is a front cup holders on the frist models of the cougars, they are made you put it up and flip it out, you make a right turn and what ever thats in there other than a soda can will spill all over you and the car, now if it was something hot it could have caused a wreck. Ford did changed the cup holders in the middle of the 2000's.
Numerous times my front cupholder has collapsed while turning a corner.it has almost caused an accident on three different occasions.i have had to pay to have my seats and floor cleaned and a very good pair of pants i own are ruined because of spillage into my lap.

The drivers side door weather strip ripes at the top rear of the window, it has been replaced 3 times already. No safety defect mentioned in summary.
Remote will not work on trunk release nor will the release from the inside work. It has been checked out 3 times and always the same answer. Don't know why it won't open. Panel has been replaced, still will not open.
Exterior lights not working ,replaced brand new and shut off again causing car to lock itself in park.
Several times when i have had drinks in the cup holder and made a right hand turn the drink has spilled on me and caused me to lose control of the car temporarily.

The car in question was my first cougar. It was bought back by ford.i was told it would be sent back to the plant to be taken apart and checked out.instead it was sold to northtown and they in turn sold it toan unspecting buyer.i was called about the car by al the car salesman and he in turn told the people i was a picky person!the person that bought the car called me tonight and they are still having trouble with the car and i think they got a raw deal!i told the customer i would help her out in any way i can.
Engine light comes on intermittently.at first it starts in rainy or cold weather. Dealer inspected vehicle, and stated diagnosics showedoxygen sensor was the problem, part has not been replaced yet.
Exhibiting a starter grinding noise and / or lack of starter drive engagement (from tsb). The flywheel defect first appeared in june 2001 when the cougar was under warranty in years and mileage.when the defect surfaced, the cougar would not kick-over immediately, however this occurred very infrequently. At the time, there was no consistent problem to recognize and rectify.over the ensuing months the problem continued to occur intermittently. At this point, i recognized there was a possible mechanical problem. The problem i was experiencing was caused by a defective flywheel.its teeth were soft and the defect had worn away the starter. The flywheel had to be replaced along with the starter motor and in order to complete this repair the transmission had to first be removed.
Throttle will not close when shifting gears below 3500 rpm's. Car will actually accelerate when letting off the throttle under 3500 rpm's. When down shifting car will accelerate also if shifting under 3500 rpm's. Very dangerous in traffic as driver must constantly ride the brake to slow auto. Car is a stick shift and mercury has stated that the problem is a minimal reported problem but they are aware of it.

Loud hum and rpm fluctuation at all speeds.vehicle will accelerate on its own. Dealer says replacement parts are backordered and have been for 3 months.
He aslo said i couldn't have been anything i did, the enginewas coming apart, that would be the manufaturer's fault.i wish i would have not baught this cougar, its been nothing but problems and recalls.i have went to the dealership so many time i've lost count.

I have the manual transmission, and when driving below 35 mph with the defroster or air conditioner turned on a constant, surging is felt about every minute. At even slower speeds it becomes more of a concern as the car will surge unexpectedly when driving in parking lots or negotiating corners. Vehicle less than 6 months old, problems with both windows/doors. Air leaks from both windows, doesn't seal properly, sounds like the window is down slightly.driver window making squeaking noise going up and down and a clicking noise in both doors when hitting slight bumps, brakes squealing, defect in paint, air vent system, when you put the dial to only the floor air still comes out of the upper vents. I have had the car back to the dealership 5 times.each time they tried to repair the windows they have created another problem somewhere else in the car.the windows are still not repaired properly. They replaced the driverside window, inside driver door panel taken off at least 12 or more times, passenger side at least 4.dashboard taken out at least 4 times and they are now ordering a new dash.the noise in the dash and now the fan was not there when i took the car in for service the first time. I belive the car had some factory defects which were not repairable through the dealership, this has caused additional probmes with my car.at this time i feel i am being forced to pay for a new car which has been taken apart several times and put back together.i feel i am paying a new car price for what is now a used vechicle. I am going to ford to request a buy back of the car, had it not been for the defects in the windows/doors in the first place, that are obviously not repairable my car would not have been picked apart.since the dash has been taken out several times when you go over a bump you can see the dash shake as well as rattle.
Driver and passenger power windows do not seal when doors are closed; must often power windows down and back up to properly close. Dealer "corrected" rattling driver window on its track, but both windows still fail to close or seal properly.
Driver's window control will take the window down, but not up, dealer has not been able to resolve this issue.

- the contact has a 1999 mercury cougar with a failure mileage of 107,000.whenthe contact opened the sun roof she heard a snapping sound. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that she had to replace the sun roof assembly. She felt that this was a very expensive repair for a part that only neededa plastic piece replaced. The current mileage was 137,000 miles. The consumer has provided multiple pages of various customers and the problems of their mercury cougars which are located on www.cougarsunroof.com and broken sunroof poll. The consumer has also provided the invoice with an estimate for repair. Update 05/09/07
My sunroof broke and almost flew off of my car!!!!!!
Sunroof fails to open... Over a $1000 to repair...plastic rail at fault...funny 2000-01 have metal rails...why wasn't this defect recalled-if manufacturer knew of weak part.now passes this fault on to the consumer instead of fixing it....at high price to repair.
*nlm
The sunroof on my 1999 mercury cougar has stopped working.it stopped in the raised position and upon investigating the problem it seems that the plastic pieces on the track have broken.while researching the problem i discovered that this is a known problem and can be dangerous because there have been many reports of the sunroof panel actually flying off the car while moving.ford/mercury knows this was a problem because they changed the plastic pieces to aluminum after this manufacture year.it is a shame that someone doesn't make this company fix the problem before someone gets hurt or killed by one of these sunroof's malfunctioning and flying off the car or falling on someone while trying to get it to close.your attention in this matter would be appreciated.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury cougar.he stated that the sunroof shifted to the side and he heard a crack when he attempted to open it, which caused the bracket to break.the problem occurred on two occasions.approximately one year ago the track and bracket were replaced however the sunroof would no longer close.the failure mileage was 83,000 and the current mileage was 87,000.
Sunroof quit working while in an open position and made noises.
(1) sun roof was closed for about 1 month prior to event.(2) sun roof began to open and stopped, remaining in a partially open position.(3) failure is not corrected.parts and labour will run $1500.safety concern in the event of a crash, sun roof in a partially open position may cause additional injuries to passengers. Additionally, concern about sun roof remaining intact in the open position for extended period of time during interstate driving. Possibility that sun roof may dislodge.
Sunroof failed to close on 99 mercury cougarlooked on the web and i am not alonehttp://www.cougarsunroof.com/.
Sunroof will not work properly, just quoted $1000 for a whole new assembly, the car has only 32,000 miles on it. Have read numerous complaints about this, why isn't a recall being done????
Faulty equipment in the sunroof assembly (plastic pieces that hold the sunroof to the track guides).these pieces also take a considerable amount of "stress" when the sunroof is in the open position. They are supporting most of the weight of the sunroof itself. And also on my car, left side track is broken and jammed.take a look at www.cougarsunroof.complease take the time to read some of the complaints.they focus around the same problem, as i have described above.i think a recall should be issued for any 1999 and up mercury cougar that have sunroofs.
Sun roof failed upon opening. Jammed in track
Had to change front brakes 3 times . Now rear brakes have same problem and dealer refuses to change calling the problem acceptable. Sunroof assembly failed 3 times . Was driving for 3 months with problem before the part came in. Afraid the sunroof would fly off the car when in high speed.had to change intirior cloth 1 time because it had water stains. Had to change weather gard on driver side door and it is still not done right.window has marks from it when i open it.
Consumer complained about a sun roof problem.when the button was pushed to raise the roof it went off the track. Consumer contacted the manufacturer, who was not standing behind its product.
Panel under sunroof is held on by plastic clips, has come off twice , dealer replaced sunroof
Thank you
1999 mercury cougar sunroof broke and the cost of repair is unbelievable!i have seen many websites with the same complaint.thousands of complaints.something has got to be done.there has to be something wrong when all these sunroofs are breaking constantly.
Sunroof opens when switch is pushed.then when switch is pushed the sunroof will not close.you can hear the motor trying to work to close the sunroof but it just never happens.after waitng a few hours to a couple of days and then try to close the sunroof by pushing the switch, the sunroof will close.the dealership said that the entire motor needed to be replaced which doesn't make sense becasue if the motor works to open the sunroof, then it should work to close the sunroof.
The sun roof was stuck in the open position. The drivers window shutters when going up or down. *jg
I feel like such an idiot because i bought this car!! unbelieveable problems, and now i have to try to sell this car. I paid $16000 for this crap, and then i had to pay $300 because the rotors warped on my rear brakes, and then the track on my sunroof completley broke, and that is going to cost me at least $800. Ford/mercury should be sued for making a totally crappy car. As you can see by the number of complaints on your website, something needs to be done about this!!!! thanks, rosie
Sunroof arms break and sunroof goes flying off the car at high speeds.there are also over 800 people with this simlar problem.the full list is at www.cougarsunroofs.com.
Sunroof ceased operating. Taken to mercury dealer approx. Aug/sept. 2001 was told whole roof assembly had to be replaced. Cost approx. $ 1500.00. Moonroof only had approx. 40-60 hrs. Use.
The sunroof broke, is a common and known problem (with a website dedicated with over a thousand testimonials).ford refuses to do anything.only option is $1700 repair.
The issue is with the design flaw for a sunroof on the 1999 ford mercury cougar, which happened about a month ago when trying to open one day. I bought the car with low mileage of 53000, sunroof one of main reason for purchase.did some research, there is great website that shows thousand plus owners who have had same problem and no help from ford.problem is small plastic piece in design of sunroof cannot support roof, therefore breaks and entire roof must be replaced even though part cost a few dollars. The cost to fix vehicle from ford with labor has been quoted between 1500-2500 dollars, unbelievable for design flaw.also causes safety issue for some as sunroof is loose on top of roof and will not shut all the way for many owners, but since no injuries have been reported yet, ford has not recalled faulty design.my only request is that someone from agency takes a look at the this website as the administrator has done a terrific job explaining the problem, the unfair treatment from ford, and also complies a very long list of owners who have all had the exact same problem.the website will allow the agency a very good understanding of the issue and hopefully take action for those who feel cheated by the company (i was directed to the nhtsa from that site).please review this website as it will explain all that is needed for the complaint and hopefully allow the agency to take some action for the consumers. Sunroof broke loose.is stuck now but could potentially release from vehicle while driving.this is a major issue affecting many many vehicles.refer to www.cougarsunroof.com.list of over 1000 complaints there.it is only a matter of time before this gets someone killed.i have a bachelor's degree in fire protection and safety engineering technology from oklahoma state university's world renowned program and this is a serious issue.
We bought our first cougar in 2001.it is a 1999.a month after i bought it, the sunroof broke and froze in the up position.i had an extended warranty that was told to us covered this part.when took it in to get looked at, it did not cover it and they said that the sunroof would cost $2000 to fix.rain, snow, and anything else comes into my car now and the fabric is now ruined.it is utterly ridiculous that this manufacturer made such a faulty product and refuses to do anything to help fix it.i haven't seen a cougar since with a sunroof that is not broken.please recall this item!!!
Sunroof inoperable. *mjs
Sunroof failed to close at 40k miles and is stuck open.it will cost about $2k to fix.it rattles when driven and i am afraid it will fly off on the freeway.i am concerned for the safety issue not to mention that all sorts of weather conditions have ruined the interior of the car.i read about this site on a web site devoted to broken cougar sunroof's( www.cougarsunroof.com ) and there are over 800 people with the same complaint already.please look into this before someone does get hurt.

While driving in the rain windshield wipers stopped working without any warning.contacted dealer.
While driving, the windshield wipers come on and go off on their own.consumer stated the problem is really noticable when making a turn, consumer has to play with turn signal to start again. Consumer feel this is very dangerous if in a down pour of rain.please provide any further information.
Panic button went off on my mistake but alarm would'nt shut off had to get replaced, hatch wouldn't open properly, i had my brakes replaced 3 times because of squealing noise.and these windshield wipers for the fourth time now .
While driving about 65 mph the first time and 35 mph the second time, consumer turned on the windshield wiper switch, and windshield wipers started working for awhile, but stopped, and after a minute or so they started working again.
This is the second wheeel failure in 200 miles.the heat from the documented poor brake system may be causing the rim failure and the numerous brake and blowout related complaints posted to date.once again, two weeks since the first sudden deflation, the front left tire suddenly deflated without warning.the brakes were extremely hot as were the tires and wheels on the fronts of both sides.the rears were "air temperature."either the proportioning valve is non-functional, or the front brakes are dragging causing excess heat to the extent that tires, brakes, and even aluminum rims are softening enough to cause blow-outs.once agin the tire is in fine shape and is currently holding air; the rim is bent in two places on the inner bead contact and i'm left with another $500 dilema and a family safety question.both wheels and tire are available for investigationas i will be forced to buy another replacement tire and wheel. Odi id 850215 may have had a similar defect.please check it out.
Consumer complained about design ofwheel.under icy/slushy conditions, consumer's wheel locked up/(froze and causedvehicle to slide. When the wheel locked up, the tire did not rotate resulting in wearing of tire.
The wheels are rusting.
*sc
