Read complaints for MERCEDES BENZ E55 (2004)

I have gas fumes inside the car. I check the pump sender , and i found electrical problem in the connector for the pumps. See picture. This issue could create electrical spark and your car could be on fire! big issue check your vehicle. The design of the connector are under heat capacity. And that the root cause of leak of full.

Check engine light remains on. Potent fuel smell present when gas tank filled above 3/4. Fumes are noxious and present inside the vehicle. Burning plastic-like scent also frequent even when tank not filled above 3/4. Vehicle may vibrate or hesitate while moving, may jerk unexpectedly forward when stopped even with brakes fully applied. Any leaking fuel a potential fire hazard due to sparking or friction common in moving vehicles.

I smelled gas inside the cabin when i opened the door on 8/9/2014.this is the first time i smelled this in the car.i looked online to see if anyone had reported this problem and found many postings pointing to this recall petition.http://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/363759-urgent-notice-03-06-e55s-were-involved-fuel-sender-recall-bombs-29.htmli removed the rear seat and cover. I was then able to visually confirm that i have small pools of fuel around the base of the sender/sensor units.these pools of fuel were present on both the passenger-side and driver-side units.

I have a 2004 mercedes benz e55 and after filling the car with fuel there is a strong smell of gasoline.the tank is located in the back seat and after opening the inspection covers i can see and smell gasoline that has leaked from the fuel sender unit.this looks to be a very dangerous issue and i know that i am not the only one this is happening too.thanks

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes benz e55. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted in the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact discovered that fuel was leaking from the fuel sending unit and was present under the rear seats. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician verified the failure and stated that the fuel sending unit was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the defect recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 67,000.

Fueled the car up on my way home from work and parked the car for the night. In the morning when i opened the door, the fuel smell from the inside of the car just about knocked me out. I immediately opened all of the doors to vent the fumes as i was afraid to start the car until the smell dissipated. I started the car and drove to work thinking that it was an oddity only to discover that when the car sat during the day the same thing occurred when i opened the door to go home from work. After doing researchi have discovered many complaints of the same issue, most have stated that there is a defect with the fuel tank filter-sending unit and mercedes refuses to acknowledge a problem even though someone could pass out from the sell of gasoline alone not to mention the threat of fire or explosion from the leaking fuel. I do not understand why this has not been addressed as a recall item as it seams as thou there are numerous complaints of the same issue.

Fuel tank leaks fuel onto the ground via the external inter tank transfer hose on the top of the tank. To repair this mercedes has to replace the tank which requires a complete teardown of the rear suspension and rear subframe. I brought the car to the dealer for this issue 5 times, any time the tank was greater than half full it would leak a significant (a puddle formed) amount of fuel on the ground. Mercedes benz did not warranty this issue stating that they have never seen this issue and it was a one time thing, even though they "repaired" it five times.

After refueling vehicle, i noticed a strong odor of raw gasoline in the interior of the vehicle emanating from the rear seat area. In july, 2011, a mercedes dealership determined two sending units located under the rear seat were leaking, necessitating their replacement.the car was out of warranty and there was no mention of any recall or service campaign relative to the defective parts. The approximate cost to me was $2000.00.just last week, on april 6, 2012 the same event occurred wherein i refueled the vehicle and, again, noticed the same gas odor.this time i also noticed fuel had spilled on the pavement in the vicinity of the right rear portion of the underside of the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to the dealer that made the original repairs and i am awaiting their assessment of the problem. This recurrence happened just nine months and 6,000 miles after the previous repair. In the interim, i became aware of a 2008 recall involving a fuel leak on my model vehicle. I have asked the dealer to determine if the july, 2011 repair should have, in fact, been covered by the recall campaign.i have also since learned that numerous owners of my type vehicle have experienced similar gas leaks leading me to believe this is a widespread, frequent problem which has serious ramifications regarding personal safety and environmental protection. My complaint is that the manufacturer appears to have improperly designed a part or series of parts that either alone or in combination fail resulting in a hazardous fuel leak.given the recurrence of the leak in my case in such a short period of time, it appears the remedial action is ineffective in solving the gas leak problem.

Im writing in reference to the nhtsa action # pe12001. I bought my vehicle on the 23 of december 2012. I can honestly say i fell in love with this car. With that being said i have never filled the fuel tank of this car until 6-9-2013. The reason being i have a 1998 ford f150 that i drive as well. I mostly drive the e55 on weekends but its in and around my neighborhood. My father jus came back from the philippines a couple days ago so he needs my truck to get around while he's visiting. So yesterday i found i needed to drive the e55 daily while my father's in town so i filled up the tank to the car. I put in shell 91 and waited for the pump to stop. Once stopped i removed fueler and inserted into its holster. Note i did not top off for i never felt the need to in any car i have driven. I proceeded straight home and parked car in my garage, closed the garage door and went in the house. The e55 was in there for the rest of the day and night. And then this morning as i went into garage to go to work i was jus taken back by the fuel smell in the entire garage. So i opened the garage to air out and checked under the car for a puddle of fuel but found nothing. The smell is much stronger near the rear of the car. I drove off even with the windows down to jus rid the smell as it entered the cabin as i stepped in the car too. No problems driving to work but as i parked in reverse i can smell fuel as the wind kicked it towards my window. I parked and got out and smelled around the back and still smelled fuel. So as im worried throughout the day at work i went into my benzworld forum and found alot of the same complaints as me especially on the w211's. So as i read on the more worried i got because my kids ride in this car and i don't want them around it anymore especially with this problem goin on. Please help us with this problem.

Driver side fuel pump sender has leak on top where fuel pump meets the top plastic assembly. Leaks when fuel tank is full.

I had a mercedes benz e-class recall to replace the fuel sending unit done in 2008 and a year and a half later i started smelling gas inside my car each time i filled up the tank. I ignored it in the beginning but after a while i got the check engine light on. I was sure it was related to the gas smell so i took my car to the dealer for inspection, and they said the fuel sending unit needed to be replaced completely for a cost of $1200 plus labor (unfortunately i did not buy the extended warranty). I know a car mechanic in my neighborhood who deals with quite a lot of high end cars and charges less than a third of what the dealer does, so right away i picked up my car, bought an o-ring for the fuel sending unit from the dealer's parts store (thanks to the research i did in a mercedes forum), and had it replaced by the local mechanic i know for $50. Ever since, no more leaks for now, but i do think this is a temporary solution and it may start leaking again after the sending unit's fuel cap or its o-ring starts melting again from overheating like some other members in the forum mentioned. This must be a design flaw with the car and definitely needs to be taken seriously before someone ends up loosing his/her life.

Fuel sending units cracked on drivers side causing gas to pool on top of senders....literally six inches from where my three year old sits in the car.fuel is pooling on top of sender units and then draining down gas tank and outside the vehicle.in addition, the entire cabin of vehicle inside and out smells of fuel.

After filling the car up there was a strong gas smell inside the cabin of the car. It was so strong that we had to roll the windows down to help the smell go away but it was still very strong. After driving home and parking the car (2 mile trip home) there was a small puddle of gas on the driveway floor about 2-3 hours after parking the car. I had the car towed to an independent repair facility and was told the there was gas coming from the top of the passenger side fuel pump and that it was a common problem. They replace the o-ring and a couple of fuel lines and said that i may need to have the entire fuel tank, pumps and 2 of the fuel lines replaced if it happens again. I called the dealership and was told they know this is an ongoing problem but there is no recall and i would be responsible out of pocket and the cost would be $2500-$3000. How is a fuel leak that is obviously a defect from mercedes and has affected 1000's of vehicles not a recall? i did a lot of research on this and have found many claims of this on mercedes forum's so this isn't an isolated incident.

Both fuel sending units leaking from the top of the fuel tank. Fuel was puddling under the rear seats and was dripping on to the ground. Both sending units were replaced at our expense. Other owners of the same vehicle are having the same issues and mercedes is not cooperating with starting a recall process. This issue is a safety concern as well as an environmental issue.

The vehicle was repaired by the previous owner at mercedes under a recall, for the fuel leaks. The vehicle threw a code for gas cap. I replaced the gas cap. Two days later the check engine light disappeared and the car threw a code for an evap leak. I replaced the charcoal canister and the gas cap thinking it may have been faulty. The vehicle continues to throw a check engine light when it is filled with gasoline. Once the tank level drops below 3/4 the warning goes away however the check engine light remains.

Fuel system leaks at sending unit/pump after fueling up vehicle. Fuel sits on top of sending unit/pump until fuel tank reaches approx 3/4 of a tank. Vehicle had campaign(recall) for fuel sender conducted in 2008 according to dealer and mb usa. Have contacted both about the issue and neither say they've heard of a problem. Dealer said they would look into it but would charge a diagnostic fee. Have pictures of fuel on of sending unit/pump also. After fueling vehicle the vehicle can not be stored in my garage due to the vapor fumes filling my garage and also my house. After fueling a strong smell of garage can be smelt outside of the vehicle and in the summer months smelt inside the vehicle at times.

A strong smell of gas was in the car. Took to dealer and they had to replace tanks and emitters. Gas had gotten in the seats as well and they had to be replaced. The smell was so strong that it made me and wife sick.

2004 mercedes e55 amg leaking fuel after every fill.very strong fuel smell inside the vehicle after filling up (stopped fill before click). Repaired passenger side fuel sending unit under back seat at mb service but issue is still occurring after repair.during a 6 or 7 month period, mercedes has tried to fix on 5 occasions without success. They replaced all kinds of sensors in the engine dept and had the car for over a month but the issue was with the fuel related parts. They miss diagnosed the problem for the first 6 months. Finally mb diagnosed the issue late 2010 and replaced one of the sending units, the sending units were also replaced under recall for this vehicle in july 2008.mb stated the car was now repaired but after leaving the dealership the check engine light came on again.the car has now failed air care, an additional expense.all issues relate to fuel tank, evap valve and defective fuel sending units. Hesitation, check engine light, rough engine operation fuel leaks and smell.this is clearly a safety issue, fuel vapors are combustible. Now mercedes has washed their hands of the issue and we (consumers and owners of e55 amg's) are left to repair the problem at our expense.the recall campaign #2008-020001 in 2008 has resulted in repeated failures of the sending units however mercedes benz is not taking responsibility.there are over 40 owners of these vehicles on line with exactly the same issues.mb usa needs to accept responsibility and recall these vehicles for a fuel cell safety issue.there is a potential for combustible fuel vapors and i pray it does not happen before mb usa takes responsibility.although the number of owners are only approximately 40 at this point, there may be many more out there with the e-class mb fuel leak issue.mb usa needs to own up to the problem.

My fuel tank has developed a leak where i can smell fuel both outside and inside the vehicle after filling the tank all the way.the odor is very pronounced and i am concerned about the safety of the vehicle if this much fuel is leaking from the tank.an independent repair shop confirmed a leak from the top of the fuel tank.based on information i read on a mercedes benz forum website, it said to reference action number pe12001 (this appears to be a common issue with this series of vehicle).i hope the nhtsa will investigate this issue and force mercedes benz to replace these defective and unsafe fuel tanks at no cost to consumers.

My 2004 e55 amg was parked in the garage after driving home from work. When returning to the garage about 45 minutes later i immediately noticed the garage was consumed with gas fumes. I backed the car out of the garage only to find that a 1/4 tank or so of gas had spilled on the floor. Hesitant to leave the car in the garage overnight, i drove the car 10 minutes down the road to my local mercedes-benz dealer for inspection. (i thought it best not to wait until morning, as hot exhaust pipe and gas spill was not something i am comfortable with.) i found that many vehicles have experienced this issue and this is not uncommon of my make and model vehicle. After reading many safety concerns and even having my own concerns now of driving the car, i decided to write this formal complaint. Even after the repair, the car smells of gasoline inside and outside. Still hesitant to park in the garage, i am keeping the car outside until it has been determined safe.

Fuel sending units under the rear bench seat are leaking gas and filling the cabin with toxic fumes. I am unable to have my family in the vehicle and even driving with the windows down does little for venting out all the fumes. At least 10 ounces has accumulated under the seat and soaked the carpeting.

Melt broken gas tank, fuel leak:* drive shaft has sign of rubbing the heat shield* burned/melted rubber tube that covers the metal emergency brake line (passenger side)* burned/melted heat shield near drive shaft (passenger side) * burned/melted gas tank (passenger side) that had a hole and caused massive fuel leak.

The fuel tank cracked and leaks fuel when the tank is full. The check engine light also comes on stating small evap leak for the fuel system, because of this crack/leak.it is potentially a fire issue and causes noticeable fuel vapor/smell inside and outside of the vehicle. It is known to effect many if not all e-classes from this generation and mercedes benz is refusing to accept liability or repair the problem.

Started smelling gas after filling up and eventually found that the fuel sender/hose was leaking fuel. Fuel was also leaking and puddling up around the fuel pump and the fuel sender.

Drivers side fuel delivery unit as well as passengers side had developed fuel leaks inside cabin of vehicle. This issue has been addressed before by mercedes and has recurred. The problem occurs when the plastic cracks on the fuel sending units and gasoline leaks into the cabin of the vehicle and emits fumes that are dangerous.

This car developed a very strong fuel smell inside the cabin shortly after filling up with gas in early 2012.i took it in to the dealer and they did warranty work replacing seals, etc.a little under a year later the smell came back.after doing a little research online i decided to take a look under the back seat and found where gasoline has stained the cushioning and a cloth that insulates between the frame and the seat.the fuel smell is much stronger in this area, which is inside the cabin.the dealer gave me back an estimate of almost $2,900 to replace the entire fuel tank assembly, sending units, hoses, etc.this is a known issue with mbusa.

Fuel tank leak. Garage is filled with gas smell. After reading on line, it seems that thousands of other mb e-class (model year 03 - 06) are having the same exact issue. This is a clear safety hazard and in the hot and humid virginia weather, the car is a mobile bomb waiting to go off. Please forward this to the engineer that is working/looking at the existing complaints for the same issue.

Started smelling fuel had 1/2 tank and thought something was wrong so i stopped to fill tank. Smell was so strong after tank was full i couldn't breathe and didn't leave station for over an hour. I thought car might explode. I finally found issue cause on a forum bad fuel senders. I cant believe mercedes told me its not covered under emission warranty.im thinking of suing them because i know that the emissions warranty is not expired.

Fuel sender unit leaked into the top of the pump area causing a smell of gasoline in the car. Sender unit was repaired but smell remained. Sender and pump unit were replaced and after 14 months the smell of gasoline is back along with pooling on the top of the pump area. When filling the car at the gas station there is sometimes a small puddle of gas under the rear filler area when done.

My car starting smelling strongly of gasoline in the interior.i brought it to a local repair center and had the sending unit gasket replaced.about 2 weeks later, the smell had not abated and i had the same repair re-performed under repair warranty.this was again not successful.i then researched the issue in greater detail online and found many people complaining of the same issue.i brought it to the mercedes dealership, where they ultimately replaced the sending unit/hoses at a cost of about $1200.they confirmed there was a pool of gasoline just under the rear seat.this issue has caused gasoline to seep into the back seats...updated 01/14/13 updated 1/16/2013

Fuel sending unit is leaking, there is a heavy fuel smell inside the car.

The fuel sending units under the back seat were leaking fuel directly into the passenger compartment.the floor mats were soaked with gasoline and the foam insulation under the rear seat, and the foam in the rear seat soaked up gasoline from the leaking fuel sending units.the sending units were replaced by the mercedes dealer at a high cost (a little over four thousand dollars).over a year later, with lots of baking soda, odor killers, and leaving the seat out of the car with a fan on it for two weeks, the odor is still strong in the car.probably the only real fix would be to replace the rear seat, the carpeting on the floor, the mats, and the insulation under the rear seat.the cost to do so would be high.mercedes should recall these cars and own up to their problem.i have no doubt that any spark near the floor or bottom of the rear seat would have caused a major fire. Luckily, that did not happen.

While checkingthe rear brakes we smelled gas at the right rear corner of car.investigated and found stains on the underbody in the gas tank area.your website indicates that you are in the process of gathering information on this subject and may issue a recall notice.

After the 2008 recall on mercedes fuel pump replacement did not resolve the problem, i have replacedthem 2 times. As of feb 2014 they are leaking again, my main concern is that the fumes after repairing the car still come back, cause my wife to be sick and after having cancer she has not able to use the car unless we air it out 2-3 days before. After each replacing the pumps look burned, and mercedes has not given us reason why this problem exist or solution to the problem.

My fuel tank has developed a leak where i can smell fuel both outside and inside the vehicle after filling the tank all the way. The odor is very pronounced and i am concerned about the safety of the vehicle if this much fuel is leaking from the tank. An independent repair shop confirmed a leak from the top of the fuel tank. Based on information i read on a mercedes benz forum website, it said to reference action number pe12001 (this appears to be a common issue with this series of vehicle). I hope the nhtsa will investigate this issue and force mercedes benz to replace these defective and unsafe fuel tanks at no cost to consumers.

Every time i fill the gas tank there is a strong smell of gas fumes inside and outside of the vehicle. It is nauseating and seems would be dangerous.the dealer states a test verified a leak at the left pump housing area. Additionally found staining at the top of fuel tank near center mounting area. They recommended a replacement of the fuel tank assembly with new pump and sending unit/filter assemblies. This repair is $3000 us. The problem is the new equipment is the same faulty design of the original equipment. Most likely the same problem will occur again. After checking out the situation i have found this is a common occurrence with this make and model and that the manufacturer is aware of the problem.

There is a strong gas smell in the car. It seems the fuel sending unit maybe leaking and the fuel tank is cracked/leaking.

Noticed strong fuel smell in garage after a fill up. I am a mechanic so removed rear seat to inspect fuel pumps, found the passenger side fuel pump leaking quite a bit of fuel through the electrical connector because housing was melting around the electrical pins allowing fuel to pool up on top of the fuel pump. Very dangerous to have these fuel fumes trapped in the garage around so many things that can spark. Also not safe at all to have standing gasoline on contact points of the fuel pump electrical connector.vehicle needs fuel pump module replaced. Very high risk of fire!!

When you filled the tank up at any time, there would be a horrendous raw fuel smell until the fuel level dropped off of full. It was so bad i had to park the car outside instead of in the garage for fear of a fire starting and a subsequent explosion. I took it to the dealer and i had an extended warranty. The deductible was $200. They ended up having to replace the entire fuel tank, fuel pump and all related items to an updated model to get rid of the problem. I am still out the $200 deductible for my extended warranty.

Started smelling gas after filling up and eventually found that the fuel sender/hose was spraying fuel on the underside of the car/rear seat.after researching the problem i found that fuel leaks coming from and around the tank are very common and that there was a recall years ago to reinforce the sender/hose.fuel was also leaking and puddling up around the fuel pump and the fuel sender.this is obviously a design/part flaw and needs to be addressed as it happens repeatedly to many people.

After refueling the car. Strong gasoline smell inside and outside the car for several days or about 60 miles.2008 recall on fuel system performed 2009/2010 at mercedes benz of plano,tx.

If i fill the tank full of fuel (not overfilling), fuel leaks from fuel tank, pools on top of tank by the fuel pumps under the rear passenger seats and the smell of gas inside the car is overwhelming. I will not take my children in the car after witnessing these issues. After checking the mercedes forums, this issue is rampant on the e class models, and despite replacement of new parts, the problem reappears. I complained to the mercedes dealership in plano and they refused to replace the defective parts even though they acknowledge this was a known issue.

I have a 2004 mercedes amg e55. I purchased the car second hand from my neighbor at +/-33,000 miles. One week of ownership, i got a check engine light. I had access to a obd2 scanner and got the code for evap error. I stored the car overnight in my garage and woke up the following morning where the whole house reeked of fuel. I had recently filled up the night before. Being familiar with this mercedes vehiclei went over the fuel systemfrom gas spout to gas tank. The smell was coming from inside the car under the rear drivers side passenger seat. Upon further inspection and removal of the seat, access panel. I could see gasoline puddling up on top of the fuel sender. I got some paper towels and dried it. That morning i bought a new gasket seal from the dealer to try and isolate the problem. That did not help...next gas fill up the car continue to smell like fuel inside the cabin. I took it to a independent mechanic who performed the smoke test to see where the leak is coming from and sure enough it was from the top of the gas tank where it met the fuel sender.upon taking the car to the dealer, i've been told i have to replace the entire gas tank, fuel pump, fuel sender and fittings to fix this problem. The dealer wants me to pay out of pocket the entire cost which is about $3,000. There still is a emissions warranty on the car which is good up to 8 years or 80,000 miles which they will not honor as they feel this issue doesn't qualify. They have just laughed at the situation and tried to downplay it. A lot of customers have been forced to pay out of pocket to cover this repair as they transport their kids in this car and that is very important.to prevent any further leaking, i only fill my car with gas halfway and have reset the check engine light with my scanner.thank you.

Reference nhtsa action number for multiple complaints on same issue pe12001anytime the vehicle is filled over 3/4 of a tank of fuel, a very strong fuel odor is present inside of the car, outside of the car, and fuel puddles around the fuel sending unit under the rear seat. Sometimes the smell is so strong, that my family and i fear that the vehicle is no longer safe to drive due to the strong fumes of gasinside of the vehicle which i am sure is a serious fire hazard and accident waiting to happen. This is a very common problem, that mercedes knows about, and they need to issue a recall to get this taken care of just as they did on the more recent chassis http://www.leftlanenews.com/mercedes-recalls-5800-cars-over-fire-hazard.html.

Same situation identified in pe-12-001.filled vehicle with fuel and left sitting in driveway. The next day, i noticed a strong fuel odor outside of vehicle and, upon opening the driver's door, was overwhelmed with fuel odor. After a quick online search, i found multiple references to fuel filter leak. I pulled out the back seat to investigate and found that the driver's side fuel filter assembly is fine, but passenger's side has approx 1/2 inch of liquid fuel standing in the filter assembly. Fuel has soaked through the cardboard/rubber cover and soaked the insulation above. It appears that the driver's side filter assembly was previously replaced (this was confirmed with service dept at dealership. They state that it was replaced in 2008 as part of tsb.), but the passenger's side, which is now leaking, is of a different (and i presume older) design.i have read the response from hogan/lovells dated 4/19/12 and would like to note that the "tight seal" described on page 2 which is allegedly created when the "access ports" are "secured by six bolts and [a] gasket" is not sufficient to prevent fuel vapor from entering the passenger compartment, nor is it sufficient to prevent liquid fuel from soaking through the gasket, and into the insulation on the underside of the rear seat. Once the gasket and insulation above it are saturated with fuel, the interior of the car is unbearable and probably a severe fire risk. Nhtsa is welcome to come observe this in person on my vehicle.

Nhtsa action number: pe12001bought the vehicle used 05/2012 with 95,000 miles.the vehicle has a strong odor of gasoline from rear seat area, strong odor of gasoline from under the vehicle, also if left overnight in closed garage (with fuel tank full), garage smells of gas.i have removed the metal fuel sender access cover under the rear seat and found a pool of gas, approx 20z around the electrical connector (have photos of this).

(nhtsa action# pe12001)fuel leaking onto the ground from fuel filter assembly due to cracking flange assembly.

Reference nhtsa action number: pe12001.

Please reference the nhtsa action# pe12001.i filled the tank until the pump shut off automatically and did not add any additional fuel beyond that. I parked the car in home garage and waited for 10 minutes there is strong gasoline smell filled in the garage. Checking around the vehicle no visible leak underneath. The interior had a strong fuel smell on the back seats.i am a house wife, taking my one year old baby with this vehicle every day. I am not comfortable for my baby seating with strong fuel smell on the back seats. However, i went back to the mercedes benz dealer, they can't do anything about it.

2004 e55. Fuel sending unit is leaking visible gas under rear seat. Vivid gas smell in interior. 2004 e55.i understand there have been many many complaints about this specific problem yet it still to be recalled. I don't feel safe on long road trips or the car burning down. Reference nhtsa action number: pe12001.

Fuel leaking from sender unit fuel all around rim of sender unit every time car is cranked to start fuel squirts out long cranks low pressure in line wont let car turn on some times the more you crank the more fuel spills very dangerous something has to be done about this$50,000 mercedes benz should have such a problem arent they the safest cars on the planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After filling the gas tack - i started smelling fuel in the garage.i didn't see a gas leak on the floor but the smell of fuel was very strong.this happened multiple times over the course of the next month.it would go away after 2-3 gallons of fuel were burnt off.i believe there is a defect in the gas tank assembly as i found many other e55 owners with similar issues.

Takata recall ok i bought my wife the 04 e55 amg mercedes about 3 years ago shortly after buying the car we started to notice a faint fuel smell occasionally, so withinthe past the three years the fuel smell has gotten significantly worse and worse on the inside of the car causing my wife to not want to drive the vehicle infear of a fuel system related fire with my kids in the vehicle, i do not blame her. So i started driving the car myself within the last few weeks i filled the tank up on 2 separate occasion and it has the first time the gas smell was so bad i had a hard time driving the car myself but this last time, it drained over half of the gasoline into the floor of my garage. Not only making the floor of my garage gasoline covered miss but making the entire car smells like gasoline my garage smell like gasoline. As well as the inside of my house. Once this had happened i looked into trying to fix the problem myself and found that the wiring going to the fuel fuel pump system had burned a hole from the outside of the tank into the gas tank causing the leak. (hot enough wires toburn though the gas tank lid very concerning if i do say so myself... And this gas station is only 4 minutes from my house and this was under no hard driving conditions justsemi- straight shot from the gas station to the house hopefully they can remedy this problem because it is rather concerning to know that these car will leak gas not only inside the car but outside putting our family and others at risk

Smell of strong gas odor. Recall expired less then one year ago so mercedes wont fix it. Why is there a cut off date to a potentially dangerous situation?

Noticed fuel smell when filling tank more than half way. Investigated to find pooling fuel on top of fuel pump / sender assembly beneath rear seat.

I have gas fumes inside the car. I check the pump sender , and i found electrical problem in the connector for the pumps. See picture. This issue could create electrical spark and your car could be on fire! big issue check your vehicle. The design of the connector are under heat capacity. And that the root cause of leak of full.

Recall that was performed in 3/7/2008 has failed.fuel leaking under back seat.

Noticed strong smell of gas inside the carthis as i remember this was the second time.

Filled gas tank late in the evening, and returned home.car sat overnight and had strong smell of gasoline in morning.opened all doors, looked underneath car and found no fuel leak.aired the car for several minutes and then drove to work.during the one hour drive, the smell began to get worse.i opened windows partially, but could not open wide due to rain.i developed a headache before arrival.left car parked at work all day in underground garage.the odor was again strong in the evening.i aired the interior as much as possible before driving home.again, after nearly one hour, i developed a headache and felt squeamish inside the car.i was able to stop and get out of the vehicle for about 15 minutes to regain all senses so that i could safely drive home.the car now sits in my garage with the back seat removed trying to get the smell of gas out of the vehicle.i have now read many other similar complaints from others with same model vehicle.i realize there are not tens of thousands of these vehicles on the road; i am sure that if there were more vehicles with this problem there would be several severe accidents.i try to take good care of my vehicles and this problem appears to be the fault of the manufacturer or parts supplier.this problem should not happen and it is dangerous.

Very strong fuel odor when half tank or more of gas. Cannot park in garage or will smell entire garage with fuel odor. Also had this problem with my previous car which was a 2004 mercedes e500.

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes benz e55. The contact stated that while traveling 25 mph the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact also mentioned that fuel fumes were emitted inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer diagnose that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 50,200 and the current mileage was 51,000.

Very strong fuel odor coming into the cabin of the car and making the passengers dizzy. The fuel pump appears to be defective and leaking gas into the car. Potential fire hazard and health hazard when inhaled. Taken to the nearest dealership and was told this was a normal occurrence with these cars. It seems to me like this is a major liability that should be looked at as a case for a potential recall.

There was a smell of gas in the car that especially occurred after filling up the tank.the smell was very strong after parking the car in my garage after driving.i then noticed some gas spilling out of the car.i had to stop driving the car because of concerns over safety.i spoke directly with diana sanchez who is a case manager at mercedes benz usa (ph # 1-800-367-6372) .i also spoke with romey p. At extension 7832.i also had a 3rd call with debbie who would not provide her last name.in all my direct discussions with mercedes benz usa, they would not agree to do anything about the issue.this was shocking given the safety issue caused by leaking fuel.i had read on-line about hundreds of other individuals reporting the exact same issue with the e55.i gave all this information to mercedes benz.i also spoke with eddie mccracken at mercedes benz of georgetown texas, and while he was aware of the issue they would not agree to repair the leakingfuel tank unless i paid for all the work myself personally.he did acknowledge that they were aware of defects with the gas tank deals.

Every time i fill the gas tank. It starts smelling like gas inside the vehicle specially in the rear. And even when you approach the car from behind you can smell the gas odor. If i can be helped here with this situation. I don't feel safe driving my car with a full tank.

Smells of fuel both inside and outside of the car when the car is 3/4 or full tank.. (fuel tank sending unit).

The fuel smell is constant and so strong it burns your eyes. Fuel is leaking into the car and damaging the rear seats, discoloration is evident from the leaking fuel on the leather. A simple towel left will stink like gasoline over a matter of minutes when left in the back seat.please let me know what i need to do to resolve this issue.sincerely,[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

When i fill the gas tank with fuel ( 91 octane gas), there is a strong odor of said gasoline.when i park it in my closed garage, the smell is strong enough that i'm afraid a spark from the water heater, or even the electric motor that opens the garage could trigger an explosion.simply opening the door that leads from the garage to the house, fills much of the in house area with the smell of gasoline.driving is also a concern, due to the fact that i don't know where the gas is leaking from, (other than somewhere on the gas tank) or if it could drip on a hot part or come in contact with an electrical component.once the fuel tank is below 2/3, the odor drops significantly.note: i had this same problem when the car was one year old and, after 5 tries by the dealer, was finally diagnosed and fixed under warranty.

I filled the car with fuel and drove it home and parked it in the garage.the next morning when i went into the garage there was a very strong odor of gasoline fumes.the fumes were not in the passenger compartment, but rather, outside the car.after driving the car for a while and using about 1/8th tank of gasoline, the odor was no longer present. The repair shop has determine that the fuel sending unit must be replaced.i think mercedes did a recall for this problem earlier.

Gas smell in car so went to shop for inspection.found gas tank would not hold vacuum and that it was leaking with gas pooling around tank below rear seat.i understand there may be a class action suit regarding this issue and would like to find out how to recover the over $4000 in expenses to repair my gas tank.a gas tank should not leak and need replacing.

The smell of fuel is coming from my car when it is stationary or in motion. The smell of so overwhelming that i can smell it even before entering the vehicle.

After filling up car at gas station strong gas smell inside and outside car. While car was in driveway i noticedgas leaking from rear driver side. I looked under driver rear seat there was a pool of fuel around the crown of the fuel pumps.

Strong gas smell inside and outside. Check engine came on and gave me a code p0456. Plesse advise!

Heavy fuel fumes emanating from vehicle. Dealer states fuel pump and/or gas tank replacement necessary.

I have a very strong fuel smell when i fill my gas tank past 1/2 a tank. I also notice when i visit the gas station and add fuel i will sometimes get a stumble and loss of power, almost like the engine wants to shut off. It is very concerning to me as i feel the fuel smell can be dangerous and possibly catch fire. I also think that there might be a related concern of once in awhile the car will not start, like if it is out of gas.

Filled vehicle with fuel and left sitting in garage. The next day, i noticed a strong fuel odor outside of vehicle and, upon opening the driver's door, was overwhelmed with fuel odor. After a quick online search, i found multiple references to fuel filter/pump leak. I pulled out the back seat to investigate and found that the driver's side fuel filter/pump assembly is flooded in and around the retaining nut. This is a major safety issue.

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes e55. The contact stated that fuel was leaking from the fuel sender under the rear seat of the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure caused a strong gasoline smell in the vehicle cabin. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and the current mileage was 98,000.

Persistent strong odor of gasoline after refueling.

Today i start the car and the check engine appears.i went to the dealer and scan the car.the code was p0456 and we notice a hard smell of fuel.then i entered the code in google and began to search about this problem and saw that a few members have the same problem and they put a complain on it.so im filling the same complaint that they do.

Strong gasoline odor in the back of the car after filling up the tank. Dealership confirmed that the tank needs to be replaced. This issue was covered at some point but was never done to this specific car vrtc-dcd-3206. I purchased the car a few weeks ago and was told by mb that the previous owner refused to do the fix/service. The problem is still there the cabin has an incredibly strong odor of gasoline. If the fix was offered at some point and was never done, why cant they perform it now? quote for fix attached

I own a 2004 mercedes benz e55. I am reporting a very strong gas odor in the cabin, as well as the exterior of the vehicle especially after fueling the vehicle. The appropriate recall was done on my car in 2008 and the same parts are failing. The smell of gas in the cabin is overwhelming!!! something needs to be done about this ongoing issue.

I have a 2004 mercedes benz e55 amg ,i'm the second owner of the car bought it on december 2012 withodometer reading 118,000 during that time.i hardly used this vehicle because i have couple of daily driver car. Couple of month ago i smells a strong gas smell inside the car and engine check was on. I went to my mechanic to check it and he cannot find where is it coming from.so i took home my car and didn't drive it for awhile. I only use it occasionally and until the smells is no longer coming. Yesterday , november 22,2014 , iused the car for work and everything seems normal. On my way home i went to fill up the gas full tank ,when i look at the other side of my car ,from driver side rear passenger area ,i saw a pool of gas coming form that area underneath the passenger rear seat area but coming from the metal lid of the car.its kind of strong and the gasoline guy need to apply some chemicals on the surface of the tank where park my car during fill ups. Its kind of strong dripped and i decided to tow it to my mechanic on midnight. I do not want to drive it home because it might catch fire becauseits near the exhaust under the passenger rear seat. I went online while waiting for the towing truck and realized that there is a similar cases like this on this model, there is a recall for this car and im not sure if the original owner experience this before.what kind of assistance i can get from your agency to make sure this issue is taking care of.its not very safe for me to use this car with this conditions and imsure mercedes benz will do charge arm and legs for this faulty design for this model year. Please let me know how to handle this problem and how can i get this fix through recall issues that nhtsa has issued for this model.lookingforward to hear from your agency .thank you

There is a strong fuel odor inside and outside the car after fueling. The odor will last until the fuel gauge gets below the full level. The dealer said it was a known issue but no recall has been ordered yet. They told me it would be a $2000 repair to replace the fuel tank and both fuel senders. I have no choice but to wait for a recall to fix this issue caused by a violation of safety and epa laws.

Strong smell of fuel coming from under vehicle. No gas leaks visible. Shortly after filling up the gas tank (i do not "top off") i thought i spilled gasoline on my pants. Turns out the fuel sender units may be leaking. There is a lawsuit against mbusa regarding this.

This car hasthe fuel tanks replaced in the past under warranty and now, when you fill the tank up, it leaks and the interior is overcome with gas fumes. The car is virtually undrivable due to the fumes. Upon removing the back seats, there appears to be standing fuel at the fuel sending units for each of the two tanks along with cracks in the plastic on the units. After letting the car sit with the windows open and baking soda in the back seat area for a week, i have been able to resume driving the vehicle although the fuel smell is still noticeable. The only resolution that i could find for this, outside of replacing the tanks again (mercedes has clearly stated they will not cover this as the car is out of warranty) is to fill the car up with only 3/4 tank of gas, being careful to never fill the tank completely. This appears to be a manufacturers defect and a serious safety issue that must be addressed. Due to the high cost of new tanks/sending units, i am not in a position to replace them with what may end up being yet another defective part from mercedes benz. The proposed resolution would be for mercedes to replace these parts with components that is re-designed and will not fail with the frequency of the current oem parts.

When filling up my vehicle with fuel i have noticed that for the first few days there is a strong fuel smell coming from inside and outside the car. I work in the automotive field by trade and upon short investigation i have noticed that raw fuel is leaking from the top of the fuel sending unit and pooling up under the back seats where the access panels are located. This raw fuel can and will drip onto a hot exhaust pipe creating a not only dangerous but potentially fatal scenario. I have been forced to keep the fuel level at half full to prevent any spill over outside the car and into the cabin. Whati have read on enthusiast sites i am one of hundreds that have claimed this same issue.

I bought this car from pure motors in sacramento ca. With a empty fuel tank. I took to a gas station less than a quarter mile from the dealer. I filled it up and my wife drove it home about 15 miles away from the dealership. She pulled up in the driveway and told me how bad the gas oder was and that she had to put the window down to keep from passing out. I immediately called mercedes benz roadside assistance. They sent a tow truck out and took it to the mercedes benz dealership in rocklin. Ca. After the dealer look at the car they told me i needed a new gas tank. They said it was on back order and would take a week to get one. That was 02/25/2015, it's now 05/06/2015. No word from mercedes as to when they will get it.i received a email letter from an attorney that mercedes benz usa llc would cover the issue but all i get from them are wasted words, the run around. The letter from mb usa llc was signed by ralph s. Fisher the general manager of the customer assistance center.

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes-benz e55. The contact stated that he noticed a strong odor of fuel inside the vehicle. The odor smell would occur more frequently when the contact was sitting in heavy traffic and driving uphill. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who inspected the vehicle and advised him that he could not smell a gasoline fuel smell from the interior of the vehicle.the manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 57,205.

Fuel sender leaking. Filled gas tank, drove on freeway for approx 120 miles. Arrived at destination to find that the rear seat cushion is warm to the touch - lifted up rear seat foam cushion, found that the metal underneath is too hot to touch with bare hands. Removed access cover to fuel sender, found fuel leakage.

Filled car up with gas and gas started pouring our of rear underneath vehicle and also under seat in rear of car.very strong smell of gasoline everywhere.car was a gas bomb!very dangerous!i have 4 children and this could have been a very bad situation.this needs to be addressed by nhtsa.i have since had to replace 2 fuel pumps (passenger side of vehicle) due to same problem, and now i am replacing the driver's side fuel pump as i type this.this is a very dangerous and expensive problem with whom mercedes benz should be responsible.this is a wide spread problem.do a search on google.this issue has been posted to all internet support forums for mercedes benz vehicles!please look here - http://alturl.com/jccrg.

Fuel pump leaks on the top of the assembly. Smell of gas inside cabin and outside of vehicle removed rear seat and opened fuel pump covers revealed gasoline pooling on top of pumps.seems to be due to cracks on the top of assembly.many 2003-2006 mercedes e class have this issue mine have been changed once problem still persists .

(nhtsa action# pe12001)fuel leaking onto the ground from fuel filter assembly due to cracking flange assembly.

After filling the tank to more than 3/4 full, gas leaks out from tank into the cabin under the rear seat.the car fills with gas fumes.this is a common problem on w211 models.

Fuel tank/sending units are leaking badly on top of tank and seeping raw fuel and heavy fumes into passenger compartment. This is a horrible safety risk and i am aware that this is becoming a very common issue with this model. I am afraid to drive my vehicle with such a large amount of fuel soaking into the passenger compartment. I also have photos of the affected area if useful.

Evap code - p0456. Fuel sender leak. Faulty fuel pump/gas tank leak. Strong fuel smell coming from rear of vehicle as well as gasoline pooling under vehicle. Heavily fumed cabin as well.

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes-benz e55. The contact stated that he noticed a strong odor of gasoline when inside or outside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that the fuel system sending unit was fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the fuel system sending unit. Approximately 1.5 years later, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they advised him that the opposite fuel sending unit had now become fractured, as well as the fuel sending unit that was previously replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and advised him that they would cover the cost of the new unit but the older unit that was fractured for the second time would have to be covered by the contact. The failure mileage was unknown. The current mileage was approximately 67,400.

A few weeks after purchasing a 2004 mercedes benz e55 i noticed an occasional fuel smell from outside the vehicle while parked in the garage. Over the past year it has progressively gotten worse, fuel appears to be pooling on top of the fuel tank directly under the drivers side rear seat where there is an access panel.i have removed the panel and noticed the fuel on top of the tank. Looking under the vehicle i can see where fuel has been running off the bottom of the tank onto the ground right next to the exhaust system.this is a major safety concern of mine and i am afraid to drive the vehicle. Mercedes wants thousands of dollars to replace the fuel tank and this is unacceptable to me.this is a very dangerous situation as well as nauseating to drive the car.

I walked in my garage and smelt a bad fuel smell coming from my car. After review, i determined it was my fuel sending unit that was leaking from the top and fuel was rolling down the outside of the gas tank. After looking online to see if others with the same vehicle have had this problem and to my findings, this is a normal thing that happens with these vehicles. I know this is not safe for the environment, so i thought i should file this complaint. They should take better precautions for this not to happen. Now we are stuck having to pay a lot of money to get this replaced or fixed, when this is not a normal wear and tear item on the car. I believe they should have a recall on this item, because it is unsafe and hazardous.

Purchased pre-owned car on date above. After filling gas tank fumes are apparent inside and outside vehicle. After using approx. 10%- 20% of fuel odors are gone. So i usually fill the tank only part way. This temporarily prevents the problem. When family members drive the car, they do forget not to fill the tank !

Reference nhtsa action number: pe12001after filling the gas tank, a smell of gas was noticed in the garage. Upon backing out of the garage onto my sloped driveway, gas was observed to be leaking from under the car onto my driveway and street. After about 50 miles of driving, the smell of gas no longer was present and no leak was noticed.

Leak from the fuel sending unit. This is a very common issue with this car with many complaints to the nhtsa. Mercedes wants close to $2000 for repair this is a factory defect including fuel tank and sending units. As my children's car seat is above this gas leak, this poses a very dangerous situation.

Interior of the car smells like gas.when i pulled off the rear seat the bottom of the seat actually smells of fuel.i drove without the rear seat in place to dinner.after placing leftovers on the passenger seat the food i had brought in the house then smelled of gas in a 15 minutes drive.i contacted mb of bloomfield hills,mi and they stated there is no such recall for fuel smell issues even though i know of a 40 page post by mbworld that almost all e55 owners are experiencing this issue.

Everytime i fill my car with gas there is a strong fuel smell in the car. I took the back seat out and there is a pool of fuel there as well as under the car. I don't ever fill my car up more than 3/4 a tank otherwise the fuel leaks into the cabin and gives me a strong odor. Please help!!!

My car has had a recall once for gas smell and puddle under car when parked over night. Took it back to mercedes for same issue they smelled the overwhelming gas smell in the car and told me that the recall was already done and i would have to pay to replace the same parts again. This is very dangerous and i see that complaint numberpe12001 has been filed so i'm not the only i e with this issue. I can't put more than one half tank of gas in my car or the [xxx] smell kills me. Also it leake gas and leaves a puddle where the car is parked. Coming from tank under back seat. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Gas leak, there a strong gas smell

2004 e55, i am smelling a large odor of fuel in the cabin and outside of car. Gas consumption has dropped significantly and feel of car ha dropped. Do not feel safe driving car with family. I smell the fumes in the motion and not in motion.

When the vehicle is has a full tank of gas, there are heavy fumes of gasoline in the interior of the car. It appears to be the fuel pumps that are underneath the rear seats, leaking fuel on top, next to the the wiring. It is a hazard for fumes and possibly a fire

Melt broken gas tank, fuel leak:* drive shaft has sign of rubbing the heat shield* burned/melted rubber tube that covers the metal emergency brake line (passenger side)* burned/melted heat shield near drive shaft (passenger side) * burned/melted gas tank (passenger side) that had a hole and caused massive fuel leak.

The safety failure is the my transmission goes into neutral even though the gear selector has remained in drive.pressing the accelerator only revs the engine and does not provide any acceleration.i have no choice but to stop the vehicle whether it is safe to do so or not as i have no ability to maintain or increase my speed to safely pull over.after stopping, i have to put the car into reverse before i can then get the car back into drive.the problem has occurred multiple times when driving my vehicle and is increasing in frequency (twice in 1 week).the problem has occurred at various speeds including several times at highway speeds on the highway in heavy traffic.i have taken the car to the dealership and was told that the 13 pin connectorat the transmission has a seal that is leaking.this has caused a need for the following to be replaced:eectr-hydraulic valve body, wire harness transmission, transmission control unit, trans service w/13 pin connector for a total of $6,164.i have found that mercedes issued a star bulletin (dtb) detailing this bad seal at the 13 pin connector.i have also found information that the 3rd generation of this seal no longer has this problem.i have not had the repairs performed at this time.

When i was parking my car i lost full control of my front brakes and hit my front bumper to the pole to avoid a near miss with a pedestrian.after the incident, i pressed on my brakes and there was not pressure, meaning i could press the brakes all the way to the floor and the car would be not stop.anyway, towed it to mercedes dealer (fletched jones mb) and they said the sbc pump was leaking and the repair would cost $2300.i researched the web and found out that there was a recall on the sbc unit on my vehicle so i presented the recall number to the dealer (mercedes-benz recall no. 2005070007 and 2005110001) and they service manager stated that then they are not responsible to replace the sbc unit because there is a 10 yr warranty unlimited miles on the sbc system and my vehicle was manufactured 2003. I asked them the reason that i never received an email/mail for the recall and he just shook his head and said nothing.

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes-benz e55. While driving approximately 40 mph approaching a stop light, the brakes failed the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that it was a known failure, but the vehicle was out of the extended warranty by two years. The failure mileage was approximately 90,800.

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes benz e55 amg. The contact was driving 70 mph when the air strut suddenly exploded, causing the vehicle to drop to the fender wall. There was no prior warning before the failure. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The current and failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
