I had an accident today the 20th of september where another car crashed into me caused considerable amount ofdamage to the front. The other car was going at least 40-50 mph. The other car was not as damaged as mine and no injuries resulted yet. I am very concerned that the airbag system did not engage.

Srs light indicates malfunction.light comes and goes and appears to be random.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500.while the vehicle was parked, the front passenger side air bag and the driver side frontal air bag deployed without warning.the vehicle is currently with the dealer, but they have been unable to diagnose the cause of the failures.the current and failure mileages were 54,847.

While driving on interstate 12 in baton rouge, a dump truck merged into traffic in front of mespreading small rock sized debris everywhere. I decided to take the exit before my planned exit in effort to avoid any possible damage. I avoided quarter size rocks by driving slightly onto the shoulder where i experienced the vibration created from the shoulder grooves in the road and one small raised bump from the blacktop. This lasted a split second and then bam!, the driver side curtain airbags deployed. I became immediately disoriented as to the nature of the events. I pulled over and examined any damage to the exterior. There was none other than some windshield dings and hood chips to the paint. I was able to drive about one mile home and contacted my insurance company. I did not hit any debris to my knowledge nor did anything other than small rocks hit my car. I feel confident the raised bump on the blacktop, given size and height of the bump, surely could not cause for this the air bags to deploy.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz e500. While driving, the brakes failed and the driver was unable to immediately stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (mercedes-benz of north houston located in houston, texas) who indicated that the hydraulic sbc brake pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact indicated that the sbc brake pump was previously replaced in 2011. After retrieving the vehicle and while driving, several warning messages displayed, including the battery and alternator warning indicators before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator and battery were faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 152,801. Updated 09/05/17*lj

I purchasedthe mercedes benz e500 2003 about five years ago. I noticed about 21/2 year that the brake lights kept coming on even after having the brakes replaced. The braking system light comes on and message states please stop your, the braking system is defective. This happen several times i was in traffic. I could not stop and when i turn the vehicle on, this message comes on the dash board. When i went to the mercedes benz dealership i was told my sensotronic brake control needed to be replaced. I was never told by any mercedes benz dealership that there was a recall on thesensotronic brake control. They just quoted me prices on replacing thesensotronic brake control, instead of telling me there was a recall. I need your help, because i was never notified, nor did the mercedes benz dealers tell me of the recall. Please email at [xxx] or contact at [xxx]. I really appreciate your attention to this matter.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

"takata recall"each year it fails the emmission test the failed code is po456. I had an evap systemtest ran they said it was a problem with the purge valve, eval hose, and the filler neck. (leaks).in my own words, the engine comes on and off, the computer is indicating that the truck is open when it is not, the seatbelt tighten up and makes a clicking noise while i'm driving, and sometimes i can't get out of the car it locks me inand i have to push the unlock button on the dash, and the alarm comes on whenever! andthe tire pressure indicator stays on and we recently had new tires put on. We had it balanced and an alignment done as well. Other than that the car is still driving well. I thought benz was one of the best vehicles but i'm not so sure about that now with these concerns! these things happen when in motion except for the alarm going off. I think there may be a problem with the fuel system and i hope this car don't blowup on me!s royster

Coming out of the parking lot, the car drives funny and suddenly the red lights on the dash board came on stop. Car too low. Return to the parking lot tried the raise button. You can hear the car raising and than it goes down again.call the tow truck to tow it back.

Mzb issued a 25-year-warranty/safety recall extension on my 2003 e500 mzb car; #2005110001 -for the sensotronic brake system.around august 2020 i was driving on surface street when suddenly the dashboard started flashing red warnings and the speed immediately reduced and transmission was locked in first gear. I was almost rear-ended and managed to pull car curbside.i then slowly drove car home, and the next day contacte a master ase mzb mechanic and had car towed there in temecula.he determined the sbc unit was the cause and even called mzb temecula to assure they had the part.he then informed me my car was under a 25-year recall extension to repair the safety- hazard issue.dealer and mzb usa refuses to repair - they say since their computer does not show faults, the codes that the ase master mechanic ( who is know to temecula mzb service manager for years) sent to them do not matter...only their system codes.i live in an area where freeway drives are essential and frequent; a sbc limp mode breakdown would put mine and others lives in danger.mzb temecula and mzb usa in georgia told me that is not their problem unless ifthe system goes down and i have towed to them.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the gear shifter failed to shift out of gear. The contact mentioned that the vehicle required to be restarted in order for the gear shifter to function. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the turbine sensor, the wheel, the spark plugs, and the coil pack needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. In addition, the check engine warning light illuminated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

I have a mercedes-benz 2003 e500 that has a defective valeo radiator that caused glycol contamination leakage into the automatic transmission fluid. My un-drivable car now has transmission failure because of power loss while traveling at high speeds. Inability to accelerate or keep up the minimum speed of the posted highway signs is common. I asked mbusa about the problem and initially they refused to acknowledge the problem existed. After finding technical service bulletin p-b-27.55/50f dated march 24, 2006 they acknowledged the defect but denied any assistance to me, leaving it up to a local dealer to handle the matter. The local dealer would not assist me except performing the $200 glycol bulletin test and described the cost for repairs. My car glycol contamination test result compared to the chart was deep purple as a result of the glycol and transmission fluid contamination level being above 400 mg/liter which is the worst case scenario of rusted transmission and showing glycol contamination started months earlier to the noticeable problems with the car. Also the bulletin outlines test kits sold to dealerships in packs of 30's. The bulletin also says that the problem is not intermittent and can be reproduced at all times. This problem is wide spread and needs to be a recall due to power loss while driving.

Recently purchased this 2003 mb e500 while driving along the vehicle began to stutter and shake @ around 1500 rpm, this occurred continually. Made it home and googled this problem and found out that this is a common problem for this vehicle due to a leak in the coolant system that somehow gets into the transmission, causing it to become contaminated which produces this fierce/potential dangerous stutter/jerking. To my surprise, mercedes benz is fully aware of this hazard and has not had a recall/bulletin to fix this common problem, leaving this expensive repair cost on the consumer. The vehicle cost is expensive enough and to have to make this costly repair is unfair.

While driving, radiator fluid leaked into the transmission which causes vibrations from the rear of the car. The leak also created a jerking problem while accelerating in the low gears. The issue with the faulty radiator is going to take over $10,000 to repair.

As i was merging on to the highway from another highway at about 40mph, i had to speed up because of the traffic that was coming towards me and also to blend in with the rest of the cars speeds.i went to accelerate, but nothing happened. Let off the gas, and then punched the pedal all the way, but still no sign of acceleration. I kept my foot on the gas and about 3 seconds later, the car began slowly to speed up...one mph at a time. It took some time to make it so 65mph. After reaching that speed, i tried some troubleshooting. I let off gas pedal completely and stepped back on it. That didn't help. I also tried using my shiftronic, and that didn't help. I took the next off ramp and came to a complete stop at a traffic light. I went into park and right back into "d". I still had the accelerating problem.the only way it went away was to shut off the car and turn it back on. It currently works well without any signs of a problem. I did not receive a message on the dashboard nor did i receive an error code.

On march 31,2005 according to the national news, the crysler company said it would install battery control software on the e-class and cls-class models built from january 2002-january 2005. The company also said the braking system on the e, sl and cls-class made since june 2001 would be updated.my car had battery problem prior to the news, somehow they fix it but not the software. Up to present, i have not received any recall letter from the company despite of the news, despite that my car is affected (i had checked withthe company regarding my vin # and confirmed that it is affected ). I do not know when they are going to be responsible to start recalling and fixing the problem before any incident will happen. It happen to me on the hydraulic brake system in which my car just stop in the middle of the street, which i could have been killed. The irony is that ,that day i received the recall letter after the fact. At that time, i believe that the company knew about the problem 5 months prior. Please assist with this problem.

Vehicle is parked, strong gasoline smell inside and outside of vehicle.especially if the gas tank isat least 3/4 quarter filled.

My vehicle started puttering and finally shut off.i had it towed to the nearest mercedes benz shop located on independence drive in charlotte.after the diagnostic, i was told that the fuel pump was bad.i informed the service advisor colton and the service manager todd about the extended warranty on the components of the fuel system.i was denied warranty coverage because they stated that the fuel tank had to be cracked before they would honor the warranty.to my understanding if the item is a part of the fuel system components, it should be covered for the warranty.they refused to satisfy the warranty and i ended up not authorizing the repairs.now because mercedes will not repair the covered part, i have to take it to another repair shop to have it fixed. I think mercedes should reimburse me for my time and parts and labor for not satisfying their extended warranty.....updated 10/15/15

Reference nhtsa action number: pe12001after filling vehicle gas tank, vehicle has a very strong fuel odor inside and outside the vehicle. Fuel is leaking around sending unit at gas tank, and after speaking with other vehicle owners, this is a common problem. Due to the leak, vehicle cannot be kept in the garage until fuel level reaches 3/4 tank. Also, the smell is so bad inside the vehicle after fill up,it is dangerous to drive.

I have had this problem for a while now. When i fill up my fuel tank there is a drastic smell of gas.i believe this is a safety issue. I had to leave my car out on the street in fear my water heater when igniting would set off a explosion.i am sure mb knows of this situation since i have seen numerous remarks and instances on just this subject.i would hope that mb will address this problem. I took it to the dealer and indeed they said that the fuel sending unit has a crack on top allowing the fuel to leak when filled up to the full mark.thank you advance in reporting this to mercedes.

I own a 2003 mercedes e500. 100, 000 miles and i can smell heavy gas fumes from both interior and exterior of my car.the cars rearleft driverside has extreme gas vapor fumes coming from fueltank area behind right rear wheel. Since i've noticed the heavy fuel odors, the car has been parked because its unsafe transportation for my wife and daughters. Inhaling the fuel smell is dangerous enough. I'm interested in knowing if filing a complaint or claim is possible and i also want to know if there are any recalls or can the mercedes dealer help with options to fix my car? any positive answers will be appreciated.thank you

Dear sir or madam,i consistently smell gas leak from my car.[xxx] 'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

Strong smell of gasoline in cabin of vehicle and outside on drivers side after filling up the night prior.the car was not "topped off". Online search for cause of this problem found this is common among w211 mercedes vehicles.this car is new to me, this is the first time i fueled the car.

I smell gas inside my vehicle when i fill up my gas tank and it smells really strong in the car , i took it to mercedes dealership and they said that there was in fact a leak i had pay for them to diagnosis it and they also said it was leaking a little inside the vehicle that they could not fix it and that i had to pay to replace the tank and fuel pump and sending unit .

Crack around fuel pump and fuel line.constant strong odor of raw gasoline in and around the car.fills the garage with gas odor and into house.while parked outside gas can still be smelled.unsafe whether parked, or being driven.

Strong smell of gasoline every time i fill up and until i drive about 50 miles. I was told by a german auto repair shop that it is a cracked gas tank and that this is a systemic problem with mercedes e-class models from 2003-2005. The smell appears to be emanating from the rear passenger driver's side.i have also been told there was a recall for this exact issue in europe and asia but that mercedes never issued a recall in the us for this issue despite being extremely pervasive. I drive my children in this car and i am increasingly concerned about this dangerous situation.the repair price i was quoted was about $2400. This seems like it should be a mercedes problem, not a consumer problem. Nobody should expect their gas tank to crack at any point!

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that when he refueled, he could smell strong gasoline fumes inside and outside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that there was a leak on top of the fuel tank and the tank would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 113,000.updated 09/17/13*ljthe consumer stated the dealer offered a 15% discount.updated 09/20/2013

Fuel leaks and fuel fumes in cabin.

We purchased this vehicle in may of 2012. We had to have the canister replaced in the vehicle ($1000), and after that repair, we were told that the fuel vapor valve needed to be replaced. We brought it into mercedes when they replaced the sbc brake system due to a recall and were told that the fuel vapor valve wasn't affecting anything, so we didn't need to repair it. We brought the vehicle for a smog check so we could renew our registration in july of 2013 and it failed due to the check engine light being on. The engine light is on due to the fuel vapor valve being open. We cannot get the engine light to go off, so we cannot pass a smog check. We also cannot fill it up all the way because strong fumes fill up the garage and gas leaks out. We were looking up an issue with the battery on google on 11/10/2013 and come across a class action lawsuit with mercedes benz about this issue. We were never informed about the problem that they were having with this car. We would like for them to repair our vehicle so we will feel safe driving it.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while parked, there was a strong fuel odor around the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 100,000....updated 07-29-13the consumer stated the fuel leak was located right under the rear passenger seat on the driver's side. The dealer replaced the fuel sender unit.

When the tank is full it has a very strong smell of gas inside and around the car for a couple of days, also misfire during these few days. I'm afraid this might cause a serious fire. I would like to hear from mercedes-benz asap regarding this possible dangerous issue, any help to correct this matter will be appreciated.

Car smells of gasoline in the rear driver side.you can smell it outside of the car also.after reading the message boards on this issue, it seems like mb should fix this issue at no cost to owners.

Constant fuel smell from inside and outside the vehicle. Worse after fillup. Goes away after 1/2 tank and a few days of driving. Fills the garage with fuel odor.

After filling up gas tank gas started to drip from the gas tank to the floor.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. While parked, the contact noticed a fuel smell inside the vehicle. The check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel intermittently. There was also a warning message on the instrument panel that advised to check the filler cap. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the fuel filler cap would have to be replaced. After the repair, the contact continued to notice the strong fuel smell in and around the vehicle. There was an investigation open under nhtsa action number: pe12001 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) that could have been related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

The car had a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin of the car.i have since learned that the cause for that was a defective gas tank.after doing some research online, it appears that this is a known problem but yet the dealer has no interest in repairing the issue unless i was willing to pay for the repair.seems an issue as serious as a defective gas tank would be covered.

Gas smell when the tank is full. Gas leak from fuel tank.

As reported by many mercedes owners, our mercedes e500 has begun the dreaded leaking fuel pump and sending unit.upon lifting the backseat and tank covers gas is pooling and leaking all over the top of the tank and onto the ground from these assemblies.these part appears defective and not suited to be overlooked by ntsb.unfortunately my dealer stated there is not a formal recall yet on these parts, but has heard about the problem many times.what does concern me is there was a recall on the e55 model, but in doing the research just as many e500 owners out there are experiencing the same problems.please give this high consideration for a recall or further investigation.the well being of owners and drivers is not worth the risk and financial obligations that may occur from a recall.thank you for your time.

Extremely strong gas fumes when the tank is filled with fuel.

Strong fuel smell from driver side rear seat. The smell spread to the cabin and the whole garage. This happens when the fuel tank is full. The smell will lessen after the tank is about half full.

Strong fuel odor coming from vehicle when tank full.doesn't happen if tank is 3/4 full or less.any recalls? will dealership fix problem?

After refueling my e500 (filling it up), driving it home and parking it in the garage, shortly afterwards there was a very strong gasoline odor in my home. I have an attached garage which unfortunately has a piece of door facing missing from the side entry door, which is how the fumes flowed into my attic and through the ac vents throughout my entire home. The fumes were so intense i experienced chronic coughing, headache, and itching around my eyelids.the local gas company came out and performed their normal routine only to inform me it wasn't natural gas nor carbon-monoxide.as he checked the hot water heater located in the garage, he immediately stated it was my car.i could smell gasoline fumes around my car as well as inside. It was so strong, i left my car outside the garage over night, raised the garage door (both doors), opened all windows in my home and shortly the fumes had dissipated.i have reported this to mb corporate customer care and waiting to see what assistance they will offer me as my car is out of warranty, but for the benefit of owners who still have warranty vehicles, there needs to be something done by the dealership. This is a very dangerous situation and the repair burden should not be the responsibility of the owner.i am making an appointment with the dealership to get a diagnosis. It is my hope mb will do the right thing.

Very strong fuel odor at driver's side rear wheel well after filling fuel tank.no leaking fuel detected.odor so strong that i am not able to leave the vehicle in the garage due to safety concerns.

We purchased our used vehicle in may, 2013 and have found the gas smell problem to grow increasingly worse. Especially initially when the tank is completely filled, it is very strong both outside and inside.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while parked, there was a strong gasoline fuel odor around the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated that fuel was leaking from a fracture at the top of the fuel tank.the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

Fuel odor after filling the gas tank, in the passenger compartment and around the vehicle.

Reference nhtsa action number: pe12001. Fuel sending unit leaking fuel resulting in fuel pool on top of fuel tank and under rear seat drivers side. Strong fuel smell inside vehicle with built up of fuel vapors causing eye nose and throat irritation-especially strong smell and vapor built up when fuel tank is full or near full. Full splashing on top of tank and nearby area dripping to floor-fire and explosive hazard, condition has worsened over time.

The car when we have full tank gives a very strong smell of gas, until couple of days, also when ging slowly there is a misfire on the engine.reading on the forum says this is a know incident with mercedez.i am afraid this might cause fire.i would like to talk to dealership on this, any help is appreciated.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My car has a strong and overwhelming smell of gas inside the car when i drive. This has been happening for 2 weeks now whenever i drive with the windows up. I am forced to drive with the windows down in order to breath.

This vehicle has a very strong gasoline smell after i fill the tank.this smell is concentrated on the driver side by the rear wheel.i do not have the money to repair or diagnose the vehicle.although, mercedes has issued an extended warranty to 15 years unlimited miles for "covered fuel tank components". The mercedes dealerships are not able to tell me what the severity or the specific reason for my fuel leak/smell without paying a large diagnostic fee/ w no guarantee of warrantied service.i would like them to share specific information about this problem with me without charging diagnostic fee.

Reference to nhtsa action number: pe12001.the seal on my fuel sending unit began leaking.there has been no accidents with this vehicle, and this is a non-stressed item.the seal that isolates fuel in the tank from the passenger compartment has failed.gasoline leaks around the sending unit seal around the electrical connections connected to the sending unit.this leak allows fuel to leak from the fuel tank into the passenger compartment due to failure of the seal with no input or outside action.after fueling, a fuel smell and fumes can be smelt in the cabin.when the access panel is opened below the rear seat, pooling fuel can be seen.this fuel has direct access to the passenger compartment.

While the vehicle was on the highway the car lost power. Pulled over for visual inspection, noticed the fuel was leaking rapidly. Immediately shut off the car. Had vehicle towed to local mercedes benz dealership. Dealer verified the tank was leaking.

Shortly after filling the fuel tank, i smell gas fumes towards the back of the car behind drive side outside. There is no fuel leaks that drop on the car and also there is not fuel leaks under the hood of the engine neither.

Fuel tank leak when full.

Fuel fumes were detected during routine maintenance at an authorized mercedes benz repair facility.investigation revealed fuel pooling on top of the fuel filter with integrated fuel pressure regulator.the original equipment defective part number is 3114704094 and has since been superseded.it was determined that there was a leak due to a crack in the plastic assembly.the authorized mercedes benz mechanic identified the problem as to similar to the one that resulted in mercedes benz voluntary emissions recall campaign #2008-020001.vehicles included in the recall were model year 2003-2006 e class and 2006 cls-class vehicles.after contacting mercedes benz customer service about the problem they stated the recall only applied to the amg version of e class vehicles and my vin number was not included in the recall.on march 19th, a usa today article reported that nhtsa was expanding an investigation of the mercedes benz fix to the recall problem beyond the amg version of e class vehicles. I believe my vehicle is experiencing the same problem that affected the amg versions but mercedes benz does not.i'd like this complaint be included in the population of e class vehicles being reinvestigation by nhtsa with similar problems with the fuel filter with integrated fuel pressure regulator.

I had refueled my vehicle and noticed the presence of gas fumes when i parked in my garage.i always use the auto shutoff at the pump so there was no concern for me to "top off" something i never do.i notice that if i filled my tank closer to the 3/4 or below level it was not noticeable.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle downshifted and the brakes failed. The vehicle shut off and was able to be restarted. After the vehicle was restarted, the brake warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000.

I have an 03 mercedes e500. At about 65000 ml i had glycol in my transmission due to radiator failure. I took it to mercedes sarasota and they said it will cost $5000 and they have to change the radiator and the transmission. I was reading the mercedes world forum and i see that lot of people had the same problem. At the and cost me $3000 at aamco. I hope mercedes will issue a recall for this problem.

Back in july of 2012 my car started to get sluggish , missing and jerking i took it to the dealer they told me they could not get the car to repeat the problem, then after talking with them they said yes they could feel it then told me it was suspension almost 5k to repair , so i decided to do some research and to find out this car had trans problems where the radiator was leaking into the trans , (a problem they know about) so i called my service adviser to discus the problem to hear them say oh yeah its a problem , really? you were just gonna charge me 5k to fix something that wasn't a problem now its the trans really, well it turns out it will cost 10k plus to fix this and benz usa will not pay for this or the dealer first you cant trust any dealer they will try to rip you off also the dealer or benz usa should be fixing this problem its a hazard when driving then will leave you stranded and they want to make you pay big dollars that is a benz problem not the consumer , what can we do to make these guys fix this / these cars??please help

While driving at various speeds a very loud noise came m the engine. When taken vehicle to dealer for service it was determined that the noise was due to defective automatic transmission.

In june of 2010 i purchased a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The car at times would shift heavy and at times would shift down suddenly or acceleratesuddenly and dramatically when the accelerator was press lightly from a stop. The problem continued to the present time and has gotten worse now in the winter months. I know the car is a potential danger but have no other alternative but to drive it. Please help!

The original radiator for the 2003 mercedes benz e500 leaks coolant into the transmission and torque converter, causing the car to jerk and jump.the coolant in the transmission acts as an containment and ruins the transmission and torque converter, which later will need to be replaced, along with the radiator.these three major part including gaskets, hoses, and labor are extremely expensive.nothing has been done to correct this problem.the dealership is stating that the only thing that can be done to fix this problem is to replace all three components atowner's expense.

I purchased a 2003 mercedes benz e500 which was out of warranty. Shortly after purchasing the car my transmission started losing power on the expressway and making a loud roar from the back of the car.the car then started stuttering while at 60mph which posed a danger to myself , my family, and cars around me.this problem almost caused cars behind me to hit me because of the sudden loss of power.i immediately took my car to the shop and it turned out that glycol leaked into my transmission due to a faulty valeo radiator in my 2003 mercedes e500.i was told the trans was completely shot and had to pay over 10k for the trans, torque converter, and the radiator.the mechanic also showed me a tech bulletin p-b-27.55/50f and that this problem is widespread.when i brought this to the attention of the mercedes dealer they wanted to charge me double of what my mechanic charge me and i couldn't afford it.they did not offer to fix the problem for free even though their radiator was faulty. My car only had 30,000 miles at the time of the trans going out on me.this was a dangerous mechanical failure as the car looses power and can cause serious damages if there is not a recall action taken.

This vehicle is equipped with sensotronic brake control that has a service threshold. When this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. Mercedes stopped installing this system in 2006. At the very least, mercedes should issue a mandatory recall to interrogate these vehicles with star das to determine how close to the service threshold the sbc unit is and replace them at the dealer's expense. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz e500. While driving 55-60 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to respond. The contact was able to slow the vehicle to a stop using the emergency brake. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The contact was informed that the brake sensotronic control hydraulic unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 142,000.

Diving my 2003e500 the red light came on and it said reduce breaking distance.it felt like the hydraulic brakes were engaged.i had the same problem with my 2002 e350which was on the recall. List but the 2003 e500 is not on the recall having the same problem as the 2002 e350

As i were driving on a side road, suddenly a warning red light came on the dash flashing the brake sign. Soon after a message started to flash warning me to turn off vehicle. As i were proceeding to pull to a safe place, i pressed on the brake and found to my surprise that i had pressed on a soft pedal. Lucky i had kept my kool, and managed to pull over on a side street and brought the car to a stop.

I recently found out that the cars built between 2003 & 2006 were built with the sensormatic brake control unit or sbc. Mercedes discovered that this brake system had a lifespan based on the number of times the brakes were pressed so they extended the warranty on this unit to ten years. From what i read, these units just fail, sometimes without notice, and the car is left with 10% braking power, which is not sufficient to stop a car, especially a car going 55 or 60 miles an hour. The ten year warranty does not make sense to me because the failure is based on usage, not time.my car is 13 years old and i just saw a message on my dashboard that indicates it is possible that i need to replace the sbc.this is a very expensive job, up to $2000 and i do not believe i or any owners should have to pay to fix it.how is a car manufacturer allowed to build and sell a car that has a braking system that fails after a certain amount of taps on the brake.i am very concerned and afraid to drive my car for fear of the brakes failing on me.i have emailed daimler benz and did not get a response from them.thank you for any help you can provide me with this matter[xxx] *dlinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the sbc warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the brake hydraulic module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. Today while driving to work, a red brake failure warning...flashes across the screen and my car would not stop!!! i am driving down the highway at freeway speed and thankfully on a level section of road. The brake pedal just flopped..nothing.. I managed to get it to the side of the road, park and get out with the car still running!!! there is a recall on this ( see nhtsa #05v-133) however mercedes benz is limiting it to 10 years. This is a huge safety issue since the brakes can fail at any time and there should not be a cutoff date.mb refuses to offer any assistance to owners with vehicles outside the ten year period even thought they are aware it is still a problem.

Brake lights keep coming on so i had the brakes replaced. Brake lights still coming on, could not stop while in traffic with break pedal to the floor. Went to the mercedes benz dealership i was told my sensotronic brake control needed to be replaced. I am now hearing that there was a recall on the sensotronic brake control. Vehicle purchase 1 year ago, has just over 99k miles. Germain mercedes advised repair cost are $2500 and there is no warranty

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz e500. The contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the brakes failed to respond to deceleration attempts. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 114,138.

I was driving the car at around 30 mph ,when all of a suddenthe dashboard turnedred . I hit the brake pedal all theway down but the car would not brake toslow down . Fortunately i was able to turn into a meijer shopping center without hitting any one or anything. I kept driving in circle till the car slowed down enough for me to put in park gear. It was not for the empty parking lot i would have been hurt or hurt someone or both.the car had similar failure few months ago.the dealership said they replaced the failed part at no cost to me .i am shocked to find out it failed again. This matter has to be investigated.

While driving down street brakes engaged on their own. Pulled car over due to warning light for brake malfunction as car down shifted itself. Tried to drive car once stopped and brakes were still engaged not allowing car to operate. Car was towed to dealership. They said the sbc hydraulic pump was defective and had been recalled by mercedes but their time frame to get it fixed had expired. I had no knowledge due to buying the car used. I was informed that this defect affect several years of this model. I contacted mbusathey explained nhtsa didn't do the recall for this defect and the time they set for repair had expired. I told them the repair is $2100.and asked mbusa do they stand behind their product being the part was defective that they used on their vehicles. They told me they will do nothing about it. That they could give me $200.00 of $2100.00 toward the repair being the part was defective. Mdusa has no integrity to stand behind a problem they created with defective braking system.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the brake pedal was applied but did not respond. The contact applied extreme force to the brake pedal, the vehicle spun around and crashed into a tree. The contact sustained whiplash and pains to the wrists due to the force from the impact that did not require medical attention. In addition, the head restraint air bags deployed on the drivers side and the front passenger side only. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed back to the contacts residence and the vehicle was not diagnosed yet to determine how the failure happened. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that the brakes failed to activate when the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle stopped when the brake pedal was depressed with force and seized to the floor board. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic who located the failure at the abs antilock system. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 131,000.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes e500. The contact stated while driving 45 mph, the brakes were applied and failed to stop the vehicle as the eps brake defective warning message flashed. The contact was able to steer the vehicle until it decelerated and halted. The failure recurred twice. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the sbc pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact stated there was software installed in the past that was supposed to prevent the vehicle from driving in unsafe conditions when the eps malfunctioned. The contact stated that the software failed to operate. The approximate failure mileage was 176,000.

The sbc is the proble , and i belice rhat it is / was on recall, i want you to fix the problem . Thanks

Sbc abs hydraulic unit failed needed replacement & switch mb said this was not under warranty for my yr vehicle.mercedes benz finally took ownership of this problem and stated in document august 2018 that they are covering the cost and labor to this problem for up to 25 years in model year.but your site does not show a recall on this?? limp mode and fault lights flashed sbc/abs unit failed. Had to be towed to dealer.please, file my complaint since i am going after mercedes benz local dealer for my refund of cash for this problem to be fixed.thanks

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz e500. While driving, the red brake warning indicator illuminated and a "decrease braking" message appeared. When attempting to apply the brakes, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The contact pulled over and turned off the vehicle. Approximately five minutes later, the vehicle was restarted and functioned normally. The contact stated that the warning indicator remained illuminated and the brakes performed at a slower rate. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehcle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to nhtsa campaign number: 04v296000 (service brakes, hydraulic), however, the vin was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. While driving at 4 mph, the abs warning light illuminated. The brake pedal was depressed, but failed to respond and the emergency brake was engaged in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted and the bad warning light unilluminated. The failure occurred on two occasions.the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that he sbc pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes e500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, there was a warning message that appeared on the instrument panel advising the contact to stop the vehicle. The contact stated the brakes became unresponsive and abnormally traveled to the floorboard when depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 204,000. The vin was not available.

Vehicle started flashing a red warning sign while driving at which point i lost all brakes it was only right that i used a runaway ramp at the moment otherwise the car would have not stopped. I turned off the vehicle and then upon restarting everything brake related disappeared. Also this has happened a few times already.

I was driving and when i tried to brake. The brakes went all the way to the floor. Red light let up in the middle of the dash it said that brake malfunction.sbc system failure.had to glade to a stop and have the car towed.

I merged onto the 215 freeway heading north when at approximately 60mph a red stop sign showed up on my instrument cluster saying stop and something else that i don't remember.the car shifted down to second gear bells going off. I was only a couple miles from home.i am fortunate my wife wasn't driving. It was a very traumatic experience that no one should go through without warning. Can't believe mb has a safety item that works like this. This issue needs to be addressed before someone is killed.

Intermittent problem with brakes. Pedal has excessive travel and stopping distance is noticeably increased. It seems to fit into the problems listed with two recalls on 2003 e500. 04v296000 and 05v133000. Contacted mercedes and was told never heard of this condition, then i gave them the recall numbers. I was then put on hold for approx. 20 minutes and then was told no open recall on this unit, and i should contact dealer for assistance. Contacted dealer and was told to contact mercedes hotline because they could not help. Contacted mercedes again to be told to see dealer. I also asked if it could be checked or tested to see if the problem was what the recall listed and if so possibly get some assistance from mercedes. And if it was a different problem then charge me. The dealer said no,and if i was not satisfied with their answer maybe i should see an attorney. Certainly seems like a lot of trouble to see if this problem is related to their recall.

The contact owns 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that the brake lights were not visible on the instrumental panel. The contact took his vehicle to the dealer, who stated the hydraulic pump module needed to be repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileage were 66,000.

Brake pump failure on 2003 mercedes e500, no accident, lower braking power, long distance for braking, warning message on dash.has not happened again.dealer informed that since vehicle has a salvage title, the recall campaign will not be performed without cost. Campaign 2005 070007.

Dt:the consumer says that on oct. 21 2004 he took his vehicle in for a safety recall to be taken care of. The campaign number is 2004050014-sbs. The recall was regarding the hydraulic control unit. The line from the brake fluid looks as though it has been cut and it looked like electrical tape had been placed around it were the cut was located. He talked to mercedes and they have not gotten back with him yet. He has also replaced the instrument unit which controlsall the lights.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal was applied and the braks failed to stop the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the brake warning light illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the gear was shifted in park independently causing the vehicle come to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 121,000.

Brakes squeal in consumer's 2003 mercedes benz 3500.the vehicle has been taken to the dealer several times for repair.the dealer has replaced the engine mount, updated software, replaced caliper, replaced front and rear brake pads and rotors as well as changed a spring clip.problem still persist.

Driving vehicle in heavy traffic stepped on the brake and brake failure. Warning indicated complete brake failure stop immediately. Pedal pressure was excessively high resulting in very long stopping distance. Problem self cleared but then repeated with little braking and very high pedal force.

I was making a right turn onto a city street when i heard a click/ crack, the instrument panel lit up, and the steering wheel locked. I was not able to stop the car in time and hit a parked car. The engine did not turn off when this happened. It wasn't a case of the power steering failing because i was not able to turn the wheel at all (i do know what that feels like). I put the car in park, turned off the engine, surveyed the damage, then turned the car back on and was able to reverse it and park the car behind the accident. The steering was fine. After i collected myself, i drove the car around the block (residential area) and saw the car drove fine, except for the fact that i was just in an accident. I ended up having the car towed because the serpentine belt was rubbing against something, causing smoke, and i didn't want the belt to break.i was slightly injured in the crash. Because i was trying to turn the locked steering wheel, i injured my right elbow from the impact. My stomach muscles were also hurt, probably due to the flexing ofmy core as i was trying to yank the wheel back to the left to avoid the accident. As i stated earlier, these were very minor injuries. The airbags did not deploy. The main reason i'm reporting this is because i bought this car for my son to drive. And i cannot let him drive this car now, knowing that this can happen. Thank god he wasn't driving and it happened at low speed.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz e500. The contact stated while driving 45 mph, the air bag suspension detached from the subframe which caused the shock to lean into the tire. The rear driverā€™s side wheel ceased turning. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer nor an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 139,000.

Air suspension - the entire vehicle has fallen almost to the ground due to defective air suspension(front and rear).this started within a year after i purchased the vehicle from a mercedez benz dealership but did not realize how serious the problem was until the last couple of years.as of today, the air does not pump into the car and therefore it's low to the ground.

While driving, the warning light car to low. Stop driving.

Air suspension lower caused car stopped while driving.this air suspension has serious problem needs recall due to defective design.springs have been replaced several times with the same problem. This problem will cause accidents while driving.

Front and rear end suspension are down to the ground ,,and a error code on dash: stop car to low, car is not drive-ablea.

Both front and rear air shocks went within 2000 miles of each other 64000 and 66000 miles.these shocks are thousands of dollars and are a major problem with these cars.they were not engineered properly or they should have lasted much longer.mercedes will do nothing about..

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. While driving at 30 mph, the stop car warning light illuminated and the front suspension failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be inspected. The contact was informed that both front airmatic suspensions needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

My car has dropped down very low on top of my tires when i started my car up on the dash was a red warning light saying stop car is too low. My car drove fine the day before the next morning while sitting under my carport it was very low.

My 2003 mb e500 sport is equipped with the airmatic suspension.without warning the rear suspension completely failed and dropped the rear end of the vehicle all the way down to the frame 2 inches from the asphalt.my small child was in the back seat of the vehicle at the time and would have bounced up to the ceiling if he had not been secured in his carseat.the car is not operational at this time and repair estimates exceed $3,000.00.

Car display panel showed "stop, car too low". The front left portion of the car was low and the tire almost touched the tire fender. Tried to drive the car to shop but can hear the tire scratched the fender when made turns. Towed the car to shop next day. Shop told me the air suspension was bad and needed to replace strut and recommended to replace both front two struts.this could be a very dangerous situation if it happened on freeway. Car could loose balance at high speed. Tire could bust at high speed.checked online and saw many people had same problems.now i remember that a friend in taiwan has collected more than 500 mercedes struts in his shop. He told me that this had been a well known problem for mercedes 500 series.why mercedes did not recall cars for repair??? too expensive and can not afford to do it for mercedes?? it cost me $2,850 to replace the front two struts.nhtsa should investigate it.

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz e500. While the vehicle was parked, the "stop driving" and "vehicle driving low" warning messages displayed. While sitting in the vehicle, the contact noticed that the front driver side seemed low. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the front air suspension needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

Driving a car in vehicle went down saying is too low

I was traveling on i-65 from lafayette to indianapolis in my 2003 e-500 mercedes- benz. Driving at highway's posted 70 mph speed the car suddenly pulled from the fast, left line that i was traveling into the right line casing the other vehicle traveling on the right line to turn into an emergency shoulder and consequently in to the ditch in collision avoidance maneuver. The reason for my vehicle's sudden change in steering and handling characteristic was an unexpected, instantaneous failure of an air strut on the front/right side of the vehicle. My on board computer never indicated any malfunctions until the moment of an actual incident. My car is well, dealer maintained 2003 mercedes e-500 with only 36,000 original miles. The m-b dealer never indicated a need to replace air shocks for any reasons. After the near collision experience i have researched an internet and learned that the premature air shocks failure is a very frequent occurrence among the owners of mb vehicles with air suspension. I'm an original owner of e-500 and after this traumatic experience i have lost a confidence in safety of this particular vehicle because the other shocks/struts could suddenly fail the same way the first one did. Are the air struts are having a design/manufacturing defect? the vehicle is out of warranty and local dealer is asking over $ 1800 to replace a strut. Thank you.

Driving on city surface street.came to four way stop.heard a pop like that of a tire or balloon.car stared to make whistling noise.pulled over and saw left front air suspension strut bottomed out.towed to dealer and advised that left front airmatic hydropnematic struct had failed.that air bladder had blown.further that airmatic compressor was burned out.i had driven a total of 50 yards from blow out.total parts and labor over $2,500.00 from mercedes benz of walnut creek.

My car (2003 mercedes e500) has had 3 of the 4 airmatic shocks fail in 50k miles.each time, the car is not drivable and must be towed.two of the failures occurred while driving. The frontwheels cannot be turned when this occurs without damage to the fender a dangerous situation.1 of the repairs was performed under warranty.the other two repairs cost $3000.calls to the dealer and mercedes benz of north america to request a warranty repair were refused.review of online forums for mb owners indicates many owners experience the same problem.

Airmatic suspension leak caused call to pull to one side. Could have pulled me left of center, luckily, on a side street at failure point.no warning at all. Car depicted "stop, vehicle too low" as warning in dash after the failure.car required towing.vehicle has 61000 miles on it.friends at work have similar car and most have experienced this failure.

2003 e500 with 64000mls, myfront air suspension strut bottomed out failed wile driving at normal speed.took the car to mercedes and it was out of warranty; we replaced the 2 front shocks and compressor but 3 weeks later my backshocks failed to.total cost o repairs $3500 and still not driving alrightharsh driving and lots of vibration.

Dear sir or madam,i consistently smell gas leak from my car.[xxx] 'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

Sbc loss of power no brakes stop car immediately. See workshop.

I own a mb 2003 e500. When applying the accelerator pedal the car would jerk back and forth like the car is stalling for no long than couple secs or less. I've only noticed this happens at low rolling speeds. This has happened randomly numerous times and i have yet to find a pattern. I brought this to the dealership and they can't reproduce the problem.

The windshield wiper reservoir fluid leaks and also causing warning message to appear on the dashboard. No event caused it to crack or leak. Had called mercedes dealership and service adviser had said many other incidents of this nature has occurred. No consequences has happened from the leak but in a luxury car it should not happen. No corrective action has been done but dealership could only replace it at a cost.

I own a 2003 mercedes e-500.both sun visors failed in 2007 at about the same time.they simply seized in place and can not be moved.mercedes had refused to repair the visors as part of the warranty citing mileage limitations.the repair cost is over $800. I think visors and other interior equipments should last more than 4 years!

2003 e500 mercedes with a 60,000 mls at the time the air control in the back started to act by it self turning the heater on at high; it was possible to reset by the front control but it would go back a couple of times in the day.know the air conditioning unit of the car has failed; repair cost $2200 and 2 weeks in the shop.
