On november 19th, 2014, while stopped on habana at mlk, jr. Blvd. In tampa, florida, without any warning whatsoever, a very loud "explosion" occurred inside my car and there was instant pressure on my chest. From the noise and the pressure, i thought i'd been shot, but then realized neither i nor the car was struck by anything! i looked at the drivers on either side of me (nobody behind me) to see if they had heard or seen anything, but nobody was looking my way, so it was obvious they had not heard or smelled anything (burning odor" emanating from somewhere in the car). I felt pain in my chest & back/shoulder, and was shaking, but since i was on my way to the doctor anyway, i proceeded to her office for my appointment.immediately after, i went to the mercedes dealership (no seat belt), where i left the vehicle to be repaired. They acted as though this kind of thing happens every day - nobody even asked if i was ok; nor did anyone discuss the obvious "malfunction" that had just occurred. I was later advised this happened because the "computer" thought i was about to crash! now, the car needs a new seat belt assembly and an srs control unit/total price ~$3,000!i told my service guy (dr) that they need to pay for these repairs, that this was obviously a malfunction/defect in the car. I was told this is not the dealership's concern, that i need to contact mercedes benz, which i did. I am writing this on december 6th, 17 days after leaving my car at the dealership.i am shocked by the lack of customer service from mbusa - the customer service girl at mb would not even give me her supervisor's full name or contact info.! *****note: there was a recall for this exact issue on my exact model, which neither the dealer nor mbusa has mentioned yet!!***** unfortunately, i am forced to retain counsel.

When turning on the car, notice srs (seat belt restraint system) light on, upon moving forward in slow speed, a loud pop followed by the tightening of the seat beat and then burning smell of smoke filled the cabin.this i assume is how the system should work during an accident but this happened while i was driving and if i had been driving on the freeway or public highways, i could have easily crashed due to the incident.

Air condirtionerblower regulator went out.when i called to find out the price of the part, the sales person informed me that they did not make that particular model # for the part that i needed because they were having so many problems with it. They have a new part that they are replacing the old part for. I personally believe that if they are having so much difficulty with that part then they should recall it. I can not believe that the air conditioner does not work in a 5 year old car. Especially a mercedes-benz. This is suppose to be one of the top cars in america. Am i right or wrong? please give me some solid advice as to what i should do. Thank you.
Fuel will spray out of the gas cap filler on no specified conditions. Dealer replaced gas cap, but problem still exists.

Transmission failed at 83k miles.the 2-3 and 3-4 gear slips.according to mercedes mechanics, the transmission needs to be rebuilt.they also said that this is a common problem with the 1997 e-class mercedes.the atf, which is supposed to be change at 100k, did not protect the transmission as advertised. One mechanic, specialized in repairing mercedes, had replaced over 10+ transmissions for the same model year.*nlm

The contact owns a 1997 mercedes benz e-320. The contact stated that the driver was driving approximately 25 mph when the front driver side seatbelt tightened and would not retract. The seatbelt was unlocked but still would not retract. The failure also occurred on the front passenger side seatbelt. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the seatbelt modules failed. The seatbelts were replaced but the failure continued intermittently. The vehicle had been repaired after each failure. The failure mileage was approximately 192,000 and the current mileage was approximately 201,000.
Was driving slow like 10 mph and preparing to make a right turn and there was a loud explosion as the passenger seat belt retracted with such force that it slammed into the sternum of my 73 year old mother, who almost hadan episode of cardiac arrest, both from the impactof the belt pushing on her heart and the explosion.one week later the drivers side seatbelt did the same thing . I had not used the drivers side belt onthe day of the first incident,or any day since.but they are exploding about the same time as the second incident happened the very first time that the drivers belt was put in use after the passenger belt incident.the same slow right turn, while braking into athe turn, was being performed.the srs light has been on ever since.

The contact owns a 1997 mercedes benz e 320.while driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions, the contact heard a loud popping noise inside the vehicle.unexpectedly, the front and passenger side seat belt retractors instantly locked and secured the occupants.this caused extreme discomfort for the occupants.the contact pulled over to the side of the road and inspected the seat belts.the seat belt retract mechanism failed to disengage.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the failure was related to the emergency lock retractors (elr).the emergency locking retractor only activates during a crash or sudden stop, not normal driving.the vehicle has not been repaired.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 171,000.
I was driving in a parking lot outside a drugstore very slow.i did not hit anything at all.all of a sudden the seatbelt made a loud explosion sound and smelled like burning.my entire body was restrained very tight against the seat and a hard impact on my chest.it was scary and i thought i was shot.i was lucky that i was not driving on the freeway at the time seat belt exploded.this could have caused a serious accident if i were driving on the highway with heavy traffic.
While proceeding straight on a city street, at about 30 mph, during the day, with no other vehicles on the road, i heard a metallic explosion inside our 1997 mercedes benz e320 sedan.the seat belt immediately and painfully pinned me back into the drivers seat, rendering me breathless and disorientated.i felt like i had been shot, and i looked around outside the car for the source.i turned off the street and parked. I was able to release the seatbelt, but it did not retract.the srs warning light was on.i got out of the car and inspected its exterior.there was nothing to note.i subsequently took the car in for an authorized inspection and evaluation. I learned that the seatbelt retraction system had activated, even though there was no input to the activation sensor.there is no recall for this issue, so the repair bill is on me.
The contact owns a 1997 mercedes benz e320. The contact was driving 40 mph when the seat belt began to retract and lock accompanied by an abnormal noise.the air bag warning light also illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure who advised the contact that there were no recalls for the failure.the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure.the failure mileage was 130,000.
The contact owns a 1997 mercedes e320. While driving 20 mph the driver-side front seat belt retractor separated. The next day the passenger front seat belt retractor failed identically.the seat belts no longer work properly.a technician from the dealer concluded that the seat belt control module was contaminated. The repair cost $3400.00.the dealerwill not release the vehicle until the seat belts are repaired. No repairs were made. The failure and current mileage was 113000.
The front seat is loose on tracks. First complain was at 7630 miles way back in 1997 but dealer said they could not duplicate the problem. Now i am hearing smilar problems from many other 1997 mercedes-benz e class owners.
Upon making a right turn vehicle lost brake power.when this occurredconsumer swerved to avoid hitting pedestrians, and crashed into a garage. Upon impact, bags failed to deploy.
Car (1997 e 320 with 90k miles) was in for routine 90k maintenance and mechanic found cracked spring perch assembly. Dealer called to tell me it must be fixed, car is unsafe to drive and that a fatal crash could result at high speeds. But told me that because car is out of warranty, they will not pay for it. Later told me they will pay for half as part of "goodwill warranty." half??? what if there was a crash due to this? what if i had not brought it in for routine service? i was told by an unnamed source at the dealer that they see "tons of these problems with the e class, from 1996-2000 models." he also said that there should be a recall on theaffected e class. Another service manager told me that they have no idea when the other one could break. But that they would not proactively replace it before it shows signs of trouble. He basically told me that i should take the 50% goodwill warranty and shut up or they would pull the offer off the table!!! unbelievable that a company like mercedes benz would tolerate that kind of customer abuse from a punk service manager. I thought i would be a lifelong mercedes customer, but after this horrible customer service, i will never buy another. Too bad, because the loaner car i am driving while my repair is being done is a fantastic car (i'm in the market for a new one) and i'd buy one tomorrow if it were not for this. Instead, i will be buying a lexus. Mercedes should be very concerned about safety with this well-documented problem instead of protecting corporate profits. Shame on you mercedes benz. This is bad business.
The spring perch on the front passenger side already collapsed due to rust, and the drivers side spring perch is about to collapse any minute according to a local body shop.
While i was driving one of the chassis is broken and the spring dislocated and lost. Then the shocks damaged and the fender began to hit on the floor. *la
One day i noticed that the front left tire seemed to be low. After several attempts of filling the tire, one day i decided to further investigate what is the cause of this issue (tire was fine). I quickly came to realize that my lower control arm was not only cracked but also bent out of shape. Additionally i found that the upper housing of the coil (spring) was literally peeling off the body of the vehicle thus causing the added pressure to the lower control arm where the spring sits. I went to a local body shop and got a quote from the tech there. It cost me just over $1,100 to fix it with a welded plate onto the side of the wheel well (to reinforce the housing of the coil (spring) plus changing the lower control arm. I did not dare take this vehicle to a mb dealer for repairs. They were quoting me $5100 to fix the issue (well more then what the car is worth). It's a shame to know this many people have made complaints but yet this issue has not been turned into a recall. Based on what i've read, i'm stunned at how many incidents have occurred and not 1 person hasbeen injured or worse killed! those coils(springs) are under a lot of pressure and having one this thing flying around is not a joke! sad to say but soon enough someone will get hurt and then maybe this will turn into a recall.
Left front spring cup assembly rusted and broke away from body. Resulted in dropped front end.part replaced and area repaired.
The contact owns a 1997 mercedes benz e320. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, she heard a loud banging sound. The contact assumed a tire had blown however, upon further investigation she noticed that the entire front suspension coil spring had been ejected from its intended position in the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was advised to have the vehicle taken to an authorizeddealer for repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The vin was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 85,000.
While making a left turn on a major street i heard a loud pop and pulled over to see if i ran over something, but nothing was in the road.when i started the car and began driving i noticed the suspension was making noises.i took it to a mechanic shop and was told the passenger side rear coil spring perch separated from the body and the car should not be driven.they quoted me $1500.00 to repair.
The left and right suspension springs were rusted.*mr

1997 e320 4 doors sedanwas driving down the street on the hwy and a very loud noise scare me. Pull over , then drive slowly to the gas station and was told very bad news driver side front spring perch broke off and separate from the car.
The contact owns a 1997 mercedes benz e320. While the contact was driving 65 mph he noticed that the front end of the vehicle suddenly dropped on the ground. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the front brace spring needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 110800.
Driving my 1997 mercedes benz e320 at 30 mph along a semi-rough road when a loud clanking began for no apparent reason. After a mechanic looked at it, it was found that the spring perch had become detached from the chassis.
Front spring perch are rusted through on both sides of car.front left spring perch is about 50% rusted thru.mercedes repair shop felt car should be driven carefully.said hitting a big pot hole could break spring perch.repair required immediately.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph the front suspension coil spring detached.the vehicle was driven to the dealership wherethey replaced the left front coil spring bracket, left front body apron, left front coil spring, and restored corrosion protection.
The spring support tower in the front right broke away from the body of the vehicle causing a loud noise from the right front tire area, the dealer only agreed to pay 50% of the bill because the warranty expired three weeks before the incident.nlm
The contact owns a 1997 mercedes benz e 320.while driving 10 mph, the contact heard a loud boom.the contact noticed that the passenger side of the vehicle was on the ground.the vehicle was towed to a shop and the contact was informed that the macpherson strut failed.the current and failure mileages were 190,000.
While i was driving one of the chassis is broken and the spring dislocated and lost. Then the shocks damaged and the fender began to hit on the floor. *la
While driving upper spring mount detached and the spring assembly fell onto the pavement. This resulted in front end failure, which almost caused loss of control.
My husband & i were outside and heard a loud crash.my mercedes fell to the ground on the front drivers side.it took 2 jacks to lift it up.with the tire off he found the spring perch completely rusted off, the spring and holder on the ground.our first thought was that i could have been on the road with my son when it happened. We did a quick internet search and found this to be more common that we could imagine.the defect even prompted a recall in canada.i am the original owner of this car with 103k+ miles.originally it was purchased in nc but i have lived in mn for several years now & drive an suv in the winter. I called mercedes roadside assistance when i found the customer service closed.they said they could tow it tuesday & have it assessed but since it was out of warranty it would be up to the dealer to determine what to do and how much to charge.the defect should have been recalled in the us.mercedes is aware of the issues & dealers are putting people's lives at risk.i bought this car b/c the 1997 consumer reports rated it the best car money could buy and safety was the only reason i was willing to pay so much.i was almost killed in an accident and wanted the best for my unborn child.the best could have killed us today. I would like others to be aware of this issue & i would like it documented somewhere other than a mercedes dealership where it will be swept under the rug, as i was today when the lady put me on hold & never came back.
The front right coil spring mount rusted out, causing the coil spring to come off and the frnt end to drop to the ground. *nlm
While traveling at 10 mph rivet which securedcoil spring brace toframerusted, allowing bracket which hold the coil spring to pull away, causing vehicleto drop and driver lost control. Dealer was notified, and informed consumer that they would replacerivet at 50% off repairs.please feel free to provide us with any further details concerning this matter.
Consumer stated the right front coil springmount collapsed due to rusting out, causing the vehicle to drop to the ground.
The spring support or cup in the front right wheel well broke away causing a tremendously big noise.this apparently was caused by mercedes not using a high quality sealant allowing water to get into the welds.corrosion and failure followed.i have read that this common is common amongst 300 class cars and that there is a class action suit being pursued in canada.
While i was driving one of the chassis is broken and the spring dislocated and lost. Then the shocks damaged and the fender began to hit on the floor. *la
While driving down the road at approximately 30 mph the coil spring from the left front of the car flew off. It nearly missed a car driving in the opposite direction and a pedestrian. Apparently, the spring perch broke off the car allowing the spring to fly out. I have never heard of this problem with any other make and model of car. If this had happened at a higher rate of speed there may have been a death.the dealer claims this is a rare defect although research on the internet says it is very common.
Consumerwas traveling about 25 mph on a side street andspring coil that heldvehicle together broke. Dealership was aware ofproblem.the right front spring tower broke away from the body.
While vehicle was parked consumer heard the front springs snap. Consumer had the vehicle towed.dealership repaired the problem once, but problem recurred.
- the contact stated that he has a 1997 mercedes benz e320.on 12/30/06 while driving between 40 and 45 mph, there was a loud bang and the contact lost control of the vehicle.the contact stated that the tire coil spring fell off of the vehicle and left the vehicle with no front end suspension and no ability to steer.the contact stated that the incident occurred atnight, he was driving on a wide road, and no accident ensued.the contact stated that the vehicle finally stopped, but that the contact never regained control of the vehicle. The spring perch needs to be rebuilt.the contact stated that the front drivers side tire has no spring pushing it down anymore.neither the weather nor the road conditions were a factor in the failure.the failure mileage was 154000.
The contact owns a 1997 mercedes-benz 320e. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions and there was a loud clanking noise outside of the vehicle. The driver pulled over to the side of the road to inspect the vehicle; however, the driver was able to resume operation. The vehicle began pulling in one direction. The following day the front driver side was slightly in a collapsed position. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The failure was contributed to the coil spring. The technician recommended that the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealer for repair. The vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction at this time. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Car began to ride abnormally; vibration in the front suspension and no movement from the front suspension as would normally be observed as a result of shock absorber travel.brought the car to a body shop to have it looked at.as i pulled into the parking lot the front suspension totally collapsed and the front springs fell out of the bottom of the car.research on the internet, conversations with the body shop and the local mercedes benz dealer all confirm that this is a known defect from mercedes that the manufacturer is unwilling to recall.there are hundreds of documented cases on the internet.had this incident happened to me while traveling on a highway i and my family could have been seriously injured or killed.car has been in the body shop for nearly 2 weeks as the parts are not available from mercedes benz in germany.i am forced pay for a $2800 repair, as well as rent a car for weeks with no estimated time of arrival of the necessary part to repair the car.this type of failure of a frame weld should never occur on any vehicle.the fact that mercedes has not been forced to issue a recall is outrageous.
Driving at approximately 40 mph and the frame just dropped.the drive felt like i had all flat tires.if i was traveling at an increased speed, i would have crashed.later i was informed that the spring perch rusted from the inside-out.this is a common problem with 1997 e320 mercedes and no one will issue a recall until a family dies.the dealership transferred my car to the body repair shop and paid half of the cost.someone needs to make an executive decision and issue a recall.
