Warning light won't turn off.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic advised the contact that the seat belt tensioner needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and the current mileage was 160,000. ..updated 01/14/13 updated 01/18/2013
The air bag light illuminated on six different occasions.the dealerreplaced the seat belt retractor on the driver and passenger side four times.the light continued to illuminate.please provide further details.
Air bag light stays on. When taken todealer, dealer replacedair bagmodule three times already. Also, replaced thewire harness .problem still occurs.
Air bag light on solid - this has occurred 6 times. The dealer replaced the seat belts and assemblies twice and the other times not able to find the problem they cleared the code.
Consumer was in head on collision and upon contact the passenger air bag broke. Ts
The airbag light comes on and off, mazda says it has something to do with the safety belt pretensioner.
The air bag light came on.i called mazda to see if there was a recall because i feel this is a safety issue.the light is for the driver position.mazda (local) states no recall for my suv but to bring suv in for a fee to check it out and additional fee if needed. I was advised by mazda north american operations ok to continue to drive but do have it checked out.they are working with me with this issue.
On the above mentioned date, this vehicle was involved in a frontal collision. No serious injuries resulted although the driver of this vehicle was treated and released for bruising in the chest area. Both driver and passenger were wearing seat belts. Even though the damage was $12,800, entirely to the front end of the vehicle, neither air bag deployed. I can supply photos and damage estimate report if needed. I am very happy that no serious injuries resulted, but i am not comfortable that vthis system is safe or operable. If the damage almost resulted in a total loss, all in the front end, and the airbags did not deploy, i am not sure that they are on the vehicle, or are operable.
Consumer was traveling approximately 35mph and collided with another vehicle, hitting the other broadside.airbag didn't deploy. Vehicle had $1200 worth of damage. Dealershipwasinspectingvehicle.
A woman in front of me slammed on her brakes so i slammed on my brakes, my brakes locked and i crashed into her, head on, going approximately 35-40 mph. My air bags did not deploy.
Vehiclewas going 30mph when another vehicle 8 car lengths ahead stopped short and causeda chain recation. Consumer was in a rearend collision, andair bags didn't deploy.consumer suffered a concusion/ wiplash, problems to cervical spine and a hernia disk. Insurance ajuster inspected damages, but didn't dtermine ifair bags should have deployed. Mazda sent consumer back toinsurance company, andwas not showing any concern.
This truck was involved in an accident.the estimated speed of impact was 40 mph striking a vehicle which was sitting still turning.another vehicle behind her struck the rear of the truck.the truck spinned and pointed in the opposite direction going over a ditch.neither front air bags deployed upon either impact with additional to a tire bursting.all three vehicles were classified as totaled.please describe details
Dt*:the contact stated the airbags did not deploy when the vehicle rear ended another vehicle.this occurred at 60 mph while braking.there was a police report taken at the scene.although the seat belt was worn, the contact sustained 7 broken ribs.the vehicle was taken to a body shop and the front end is being repaired.the dealership determined the airbags did not deploy because the impact was too high on the vehicle.
While driving 20mph, t-boned another vehicle and airbags did not deploy. Frontal impact, driver injured. *yd
1. Recall on safety buckle, nhtsa # 03v515000. 2. Airbag light continually flashing. Unsafe conditions when driving. 3.foothills mazda in spokane, wa refuses to replace the buckle assembly stating that the warranty ran out at 50,000 miles.how does a warranty run out on a safety recall?i have tried for nearly a year to have the buckles fixed, but they refuse to do it.
Airbag warning light is constantly on.system has failed frequently and been repaired by dealer, only to fail again several months later.
While driving home from work and with no impact of any kind the passenger air bag deployed. My vehicle did not hit anything. There was no one in front or behind me. I made it home without further incident, in this case i was concerned about the drivers air bag going off. It did not. I called the local city police desk and they advised that it was alright to drive the vehicle. I called my insurance co. And they sent an adjuster a few days later. The insurance co. Prompted me to take the vehicle to a mazda dealer to have the system read.i did so. The vehicle was repaired with a new air bag and module. No explanation why the air bag deployed was given to me or the insurance co. To my knowledge.
Srs indicator has malfunctioned twice.dealer replaced sensor free of charge.on the third incident, dealer could not duplicate, although the light was on when the vehicle was left with the dealer.
We had the front driver a side and passenger side airbags deployed while slowing down for a red light.this premature deployment caused me to lose control of the vehicle and crash into the vehicle in front of me.
On august 29th, 2003 i was driving in my 2001 mazda tribute.as i slowed down to make a turn, the car suddenly had a total loss of power.i had no steering and no brakes and i was quickly headed into oncoming traffic with no control of the car.luckily i was able to react in time and pull up the emergency brake.once i regained my composure, i was able to put the car into neutral and then restart the car.the only time i have driven it since is to take into the dealership.they were very sympathetic to my situation and later advised me that a technical bulletin had been issued for this issue and they were able to fix it.they explained there was no recall issued for this situation.on september 5th, 2003 i called mazda customer care and explained what had happened.they informed me that mazda is aware of the situation and they do not feel it is a safety issue.they also indicated it only happens in less than 1% of all of their vehicles and they did not want to cause "panic" amongst their car owners.i feel i was lucky to escape without injury or without getting into a serious accident.i feel other mazda owners should be aware of this situation.thank you for your time.lewis paskin.
All power cuts off when coasting down a hill.loss of brakes and steering results.this is the second time this has happened.
Drivers side front door handle stopped working, window needs to be down in order to open door. If in an accident or fire driver will need assistance in exiting car. This is proven by all other complaints to be common with this vehicle and in hazardous situations potentially fatal unless government steps in and demands recall. Dealer wants $300.00+ to fix, have already spent $3000.00+ at dealer on computer failures and left side driver door window assembly failure.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.while driving 45 mph uphill, the vehicle suddenly lost power.the exterior and interior lights remained illuminated, but there was no engine power.the contact was able to pull off the road.there were no warning lights present.the local mechanic was unable to repair the vehicle.the vehicle was then taken to a mazda dealer and they stated that the computer failed and needed to be replaced.the mileage information was unavailable.
While driving, air bag light illuminated, resulting in engine to stall and shut down.dealership has been notified.dealer replaced the cut off relay.
My 2001 tribute 4x4 has stalled twice while in motion going downhill. This has resulted in very difficult braking and steering making for a dangerous situation. *nlm
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The vehicle caught fire under the hood after being parked for approximately two hours. As of october 9, 2007, the dealer or manufacturer had not inspected the vehicle. The contact stated that the electrical system caused the fire.there were no injuries or property damage. The current and failure mileages were 73,000. A police report was filed.charleston police report. Updated 10/31/07
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. When the vehicle was stopped at a red light, it completely shut off. The failure recurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. While driving approximately 50 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact was able to maneuver the vehicle onto the shoulder of the road. The vehicle was towed to the contacts home. The dealer was contacted and advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The contact also stated there was difficulty when the vehicle was started. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
Individual coil over pack failure. This will be the 3rd coil pack failure in 3 years. Symptoms are missing or bad idle at low rpm.
Due to a computer failure, the vehicle shuts itself off while driving.i was told by the service department at quirk mazda in quincy, ma that they have seen "at least a half dozen" of this problem, mazda knows about it,however there has been no recall.i was driving along i-93 in boston at rush hour at approximately 45 mph when the car died.after a few attempts it started back up but did not register a 'check engine' light on the dashboard.the computer did not detect that there was ever a problem.quirk mazda's solution was to"reprogram pcm" and install updated software.luckily i was not only going 45 mph, or i could have been seriously injured.please demand that mazda issues a recall for this safety hazard.
This vehicle has stalled on numerous ocassions when being driven, this usually occurs when being driven below 35 miles per hour driving down a hill. Each time the vehicle has stalled it has caused my husband and i to have no control of the vehicle at all.
The car stalls alot and the oil and battery light flashes when coming to a stop then u drive again and it goes off. It will do it for a couple of days then stop then start up again.has to be some type of wiring issue had the oil change so thats fine and the battery tested and thats all good.
Mazda tirbute esv6 has lost all power under normal driving conditions; no power steering or brakes and all indicator lights came on.which is very difficult to steer out of oncoming traffic to get out to safety.the mechanic from jim ellis mazda at marietta, ga told that this case already happened twice (one from a different car).in addition, it was reported that the valve gets "carbed up."this occurs when a driver is coasting between accelerating and braking.also, the transmission and electrical systems are already going haywire on this vehicle with no wipers, airbag light constantly on or blinking, transmission slipping and grinding.*la
The truck stalled (complete electrical shutdown) while driving, no steering and no brakes, narrowly missing another truck coming towards me.
(1)events leading to failure:during normal driving, pressing the brake pedal, rolling down a window, or using turn signal.(2)failure:engine dies, loss of power steering, power brakes, etc...(3)vehicle has been brought to dealer several times, issue has not been improved/corrected.
Very rough running motor, loss of power. Replaced egr valve 3 times. Found letter from mazda stating extended warranty on egr valve sensor up to 75k miles. 101,000 on our tribute.mazda should of recalled the sensor!
On july 3, theignition, steering wheel, and wheels of our 2001 mazda tribute froze when we tried to start the car.the car was towed to senator imports, on florin road, in sacramento, california.on july 7, although the dealership said that the car was fixed, they couldn't get the car to work when we tried to pick it up.on the evening of july 12, we startedthe car. The light illuminating the gear selection was until, so we couldn't see what gear we were in.on thursday evening, july 13, we startedthe car and the battery was totally dead.we re-charged the battery, but it was dead again in 2 hours.we took the car in to have the battery professionally charged. The battery was purchased in april of 2005.on thursday, july 20, the car was running and just stopped dead.we again jumped it and took it to our private mechanic.on friday, july 21, our mechanic did a diagnostic test on the car.it came up with a diagnostic test code error that said that the key program code was entered in error.our mechanic rebooted the computer, to ensure that the problem was not related to a technical service bulletin about the tribute just shutting off.when he tried to restart the car, the car would not start. (long story short, the dealer lost our spare key.we had to come back for it on july 11, and they reprogrammed both our keys to the new ignition.) our mechanic suggested that we have the car towed to the dealership, as he considered it unsafe to drive.today, july 22, the dealership said thatall they could find wrong with the car was a dead battery.we are beginning to lose confidence that they actually know how to fix the vehicle.
Vehicle stalled while driving, no steering. Everything electrical stopped working. This is the second time this incident has taken place. Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem? is ford/mazda going to recall these vehicles (escape/tribute) and fix them?
Engine stalled twice in 3 days, once while i was slowing to make a turn and a second time when i was just coasting without steping on the gas pedal.i was able to restart the engine okay right afterwards.i have taken the car to the dealer who said there was tsb for this problem.the fix was to reprogram the computer.if this is the case, why don't they do a recall and reprogram all of the tributes if this is such a wide spread problem?i think this a very dangerous situation to have your car stall while you are turning/stopping/coasting.if this does not fix the problem, i will file another report with you.nlm
2001 mazda tribute, died while driving at 35 miles per hour.no breaks, no steering, no control.this is the 3rd time and clearly the most dangerous as it was life threatening.mazda is unresponsive and not honoring my buy back request.they said the problem has been fixed, but they said they fixed it previously and it wasn't so i have no faith i am not willing to risk my life again.why hasn't there been a recall?i have seen dozen of others with the same problem.
The madza tribute 2001 stalls without warning, at varying speeds.both the brakes and the steering system are inoperable.the car starts again after this occurs.this has happened 5 times!luckily, my son who drives this car hasn't been injured.but what about the next time?what if he is driving on the expressway at 55 or 65 miles an hour?can mazda assure me that he won't be seriously injured or killed?the service department has offered several explanations after verifying that this is a on going problem with this vehicle.we have been told that the air intake valve sticks when carbon builds up on it.now we are told it is a flaw in the computer. Clearly there is a serious design flaw which the service departments have been unable to repair.this car is a disaster waiting to happen!how can i possibly allow my son to drive this vehicle?!!*la
While driving on a downhill slope the vehicle completely stalled out without warning leaving the vehicle with no power steering or brakes, no accident occured and the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they say the problem is with a defective relay, the consumer is requesting full reimbursement of the purchase price.nlm
Electrical system works intermittently.dealership is aware of problem. Consumer stated that the vehicle dies at 40-45 mph while driving. Also, vehicle would not start after sitting for several hours. Brakes and steering failed and it was hard to control the vehicle.
Vehicle going uphill, engine stopped, brakes were used to stop vehicle from rolling downhill, engine light, battery light and oil light came on.no components working inside of the car except the windows.car remained stationary for 20 minutes waiting on help and then started after several tries.slight shimmywhile driving to the dealer, along with tachometer jumping about on at a steady speed.

My mazda tribute stalls at high speeds.most recently, going downhill at 45 mph.engine died, battery lights and oil lights turned on... No warning at all.i lost power to the steering wheel and brakes.very dangerous because it happened so suddenly, and there was no safe place to get off the road.this is the third incident with this car, the second stalling.my car only has 21,000 miles.

At 36000 miles automatic transmission failed, at 4500 miles automatic transmission failed. At 45k000 miles altenator failed.
Was going down a slight hill at about 40-45 mph when i noticed the steering became stiff.discovered the engine had quit.braked (with some difficulty) and pulled over to a stop.shifted into park and restarted.i am concerned that this will probably happen again, possibly in heavy traffic and could be a safety concern.i note there have been numerous complaints made to nhtsa about stalling problems in the 2001 tribute.i have not yet notified the dealer but will do so next week.
Vehicle stalled 1x going down hill at 40 mph. Difficult to steer and brake to stop.
Driving at approx 40-45 mph andentire suv shutdown mechanically and eletrically.coasted to stop could not re-start again, until 10-15 minutes later.this is the second occurrence and the same symptom/s.
While driving at about 50 mph and coming to a fork in the road,as soon as consumer merged to rightsteering wheel got very stiff. Then, whole dash lit up. Consumer put on brakes/putin park, and went to a mazda dealer.dealer could not find anything. At another day while driving at 60 mph consumer was bearing over, steering wheel got tight again, and vehicle cut off.
Owned my tribute for a year before the problems began.on 3/15/02 i took it in because the low coolant light kept coming on.the dealership couldn't find a problem, but i had them do a 30k mile service and check everything from front to back.had a rental for two days.on 6/10/02 i took it in because it suddenly started stalling dead at stops and yields.i almost wrecked due to this.cause: internal failure.the dealership replaced the control unit, idle air valve, coolant fan relay.i had a rental for three days.on 8/5/02 it had to be towed because the ignition switch completely locked up and wouldn't turn.dealership put in a new ignition switch and cylinder.my keys had to be reprogrammed.i had a rental for two days.on 11/13/02 i took it in because the check engine light kept coming on and the engine did not idle smoothly.the dealership could not duplicate the problem and i used their rental for three days.on 12/24/02 the engine light came back, the engine idled rough and the entire vehicle was visibly shaking.the dealership told me that one of the six coils was bad and needs to be replaced or one wrong spark could ruin the whole engine. Looks like i have the rental for at least a week.it just went over 50k miles, so my basic warranty is up, however the emisions conrol system (engine) is warranted until 80k miles.it seems a shame that mazda would put out such poor quality and problematic vehicles to their loyal customers.maybe they should add that to their "zoom, zoom" commercials.
This is the second time the car has died on me when i was driving; the first time was on april 20 right after i purchased the car.
The driver side door handle failed, i was trapped inside the car on the driver side. I had to lower the power window, reach outside of the car and open the door. I purchased a handle and paid to have the door handle replaced on 6/29/2005. The passenger side door handle failed , leaving the passenger trapped inside the car on the passenger side. Passengers had to lower the power window, reach outside the car and open the door. I purchased a handle and paid to have the door handle replaced on 3/13/2006. Recently, every time i crank my car a large cloud of gray smoke comes from the tailpipe. Today, 6/16/2006, i went to put the key into the ignition and the key would not go in. After several attempts the key went into the ignition but, the key would not turn. I was unable to start the car. With assistance from a local mechanic, after numerous attempts, the key went in, turned and the car started. It was suggested to me, do not make any stops on the way home that would require turning the car off. Once i arrived at home i turned the car off and attempted to start the car again. The key will go in but, after several attempts, the key will not turn to start the car. With the mazda being my only vehicle i feel this is a safety issue for my son and i. While driving the mazda the rear glass on the hatch opened.i pulled over to close the glass and it would not close and latch.with the help of a local mechanic he was able to close and engage the latch on the glass door. We avoid opening the rear glass but on accident the glass door was opened and it was the same scenario.
This is the second time my car stalled while driving at around 40mph.again i was going down a hill, around a bend just like the first time.the car dies, all power goes out, leaving me to try to get my car to the side of the road.no power steering, no power brakes.the first complaint, the dealership replaced the whole ignition, they said this would fix the problem.i spoke to a zone representative on 4/17/02, the day of the second complaint, who told me back when the first problem occurred, mazda really didn't know how to solve the problem.recently, they discovered it was a computer chip/software problem so when i called in to the dealership today, they said they knew of the problem and they just had to fix it. They had gotten a letter from mazda stating that there were complaints about this and now they knew what the problem was. They did not attempt to contact me to let me know that when they originally fixed the problem, it wasn't complete.further, i just had my car in for a regular service check up/oil change yesterday, 4/16/02, a day before the problem.also, i had just had a service check up previously before the first problem when they knew about it then.so, today, the problem happened again and now, i feel unsafe driving this vehicle.how do i know there isn't something else mazda is not telling me?i would like to see a recall on this vehicle and to have a full inspection on this part and all its components.thank you. Nlm
I have a 2001 mazda tribute.i couldn't turn my key to start the car.after calling the dealership, they said it was a common problem with thsi car.they said there would be no recall because it wasn't a safety issue.they also said the ford model (the escape) also was having this problem.they are aware of the problem, but yet i had to pay to get this fixed.it is a known defect by ford/mazda.
(1) 2001 mazda tribute/dx-v6: normal city/highway driving within past six months(2) car would stall when approaching stop sign/stop light (rpms too low)(3) replaced ignition coil via mazda dealers (seattle, wa, pasenda, md, pensacola, fl).
Engine suddenly cuts off, leaving driver with no power steering.remedied by putting car into neutral while still driving and turning ignition on.however, somewhat scary if it happens while cornering.occurs about once a month. *nlm
I purchased my tribute new in oct, 2001.since that time it has stalled out 6 times.this has occurred when traveling between 35 and 45 mph while slowing down going down hill or around the corner.the truck has been taken to the shop 2 times for this problem.the dealer states they are unable to duplicate the problem.luckily this has not occured in a high traffic situation as the truck would be uncontrollable due to the power steering and brakes not functioning.i believe this is a safety issue that needs to be investigated.
Vehicle will shut down while being driven with no warning.dealership has made three attempts to correct failure, but stalling still persists.please describe details.
The vehicle has been back to the dealer 5 times due to the horn blowing on its on accord.unable to stop it from blowing.the horn was blowing on its own again today.today, the vehicle has started on its own accord 2 times sitting in the driveway without any personal intervention.
I bought my tribute in august and just had the first service done recently so when i was driving on friday, november 16, 2001, i was not expecting any problem.i was going about 45 mph and all of a sudden i couldn't steer the car.the power steering had ceased and i believe the brakes also.i veered off the side of the road and stopped the car.i proceeded to find a phone to call for assistance and when i got the car towed to ridgefield mazda i spoke with the service manager.we had a conversation about what the problem could be and he was almost certain he knew what the problem was.he told me mazda had gotten several tributes come in for the same problem which is the ignition fails and everything goes out like the steering etc.just what happened to me.obviously, mazda knew of the problem, and i questioned how they could not notify other drivers of this malfunction.he told me it wasn't considered a recall as of yet even though they had several customers come in with the same problem.i believe this is a major problem with the vehicle and it should be recalled.the tribute is a new vehicle and i understand there may still be kinks/bugs to work out with a new vehicle but this isn't a minor problem.i would like this checked into and if possible, make it a recall so this won't happen to other drivers.luckily, i was able to steer the car to a safe location, but it could have been worse.i would not want to see this happen to someone else.thank you..
Whenever ignition is started there are gas fumesinpassenger's compartment. Dealer says it's not a safety hazard.
Three times the car has lost power, including steering and brakes.
The tribute stalled while driving 20 mph.when i got it restarted, the trip odometer was reset and the radio station presets were lost.i also haveintermittent problems starting the car - it makes a rattling sound and the battery light goes on.
Vehicle stalled out and died without warning, causing loss of steering and brakes. Dealer has inspectedvehicle, and was not able to duplicate or correct the problem.
Travelling on major highway at the height of rush hour traffice when vehicle lost all power.could not restart for 10-15 minutes.dealer could not find the problem, so they called in a "special" technician from mazda who claimed the problem was with the pcm or "computer" of the vehicle, this part was replaced.the vehicle stalled again 4 days later.funny how there are so many complaints about the exact same problem yet mazda claims to know nothing about the problem!does someone have to die before they will admit that this problem with the tributes is dangerous and potentially deadly?
This is a second failure, the first occurring on 05/30/01. The engine quit while crossing railroad tracks with two passengers. I coasted almost clear of tracks, stopped the vehicle, put it in park and restarted the engine after two or three attempts. This same type of failure occurred, at the same location, when my wife was driving the vehicle about a little more than a week earlier.
While driving vehicle stalls and i lose power/steering.after safely getting my car to the side of the road i am able to restart the car.the dealer has seen my car twice now and finds nothing wrong with it, and expects me to drive the defective vehicle.this stalling has happened twice now.
The tribute loss all power coming down a mountain pass, i stopped it on side of road turned off, checked oil, it was ok, so i started it up and drove to the mazda dealer.they put it in for service, when i picked it up they said there was nothing wrong with it.there was no paperwork.this happened coming down a mountain pass which is has several sharp turns.i travel this pass often and feel this is a safty issue that should be addressed.i could have been on a turn when this happened.thank you for your time.judy & bill whitney.

While drivingsteering locked up with little prior warning. Consumer pulled over and waited which allowed steering to comeback.on april 26, 2001 began having problems starting up. Dealer has had vehicle for about a week, and has not been able to provide remedy.
Steering shut down, car die out at 45mph and car stalled.
I filed a complaint yesterday.my complaint # was 10163178.thisthe dealership has finally diagnosed the problem with the car as a bad alternator.we hope that this will fix the problems we have experienced to date. However, the situation was dangerous, with the car shutting off while running. In all fairness to the dealership, the service technicians have been very nice and they did give us a loaner car.we still have a concern about the electrical system of the car in general (with all the things going wrong at one time).however, we trust that we will not be heading to the dealer any time soon.
I purchased the car on 8/12/01 from brown's mazda in alexandria, va.the car currently has 3000 miles on it and has stalled twice while driving.the car stalls on a decline between 30-40 mph.when the car stalls, the stereo is still on, but the engine goes out and the power steering and power brakes go out, which makes the car hard to drive.to fix this, you have to put the car in neutral and restart the engine (all while you are moving).i contacted the dealer and they are aware of the problem, they have said that the majority of tribute's and ford escape's have this problem and they do not have a fix for the car.originally, they did not even want me to bring the car in because they said there's nothing they can do until mazda comes up with a "fix".i called the mazda usa hotline and they called the dealership and informed them they have to look at the car.the car is now at the dealership (to be picked up today), but when dropping the car off, they informed me again that there is nothing they can do for me and i shouldn't have brought the car in.the dealership would also not comment on if they thought this was a "safety" issue and said that they are waiting to hear back from their "representative".i have had the car for less than two months, does this qualify as a lemon since it is unsafe to drive?am i entitled to my money back (i know the dealer will not give me my money back because they say it is a mazda issue)?
Upon starting the vehicle, the keys failed to turn in the ignition. The vehicle will be towed to a dealership.
Vehicle dies while driving.this occurred 3 times; mazda agreed to repurchase vehicle after 4th inspection, and they cannot locate the problem.therefore, they can't fix it.this is a serious safety hazard.my neighbor told me this week that this exact same stalling problem has happened to her two times.i feel this is more than a coincidence and that there is a severe stalling problem and a recall has yet to be done by mazda.
While driving at approx. 45mph, the vehicle suddenly quits, making it very difficult to control.after managing to pull off of the road, i put the vehicle into park, turned off the ignition, then restarted with no problem. Called mazda dealership. They were very aware of the problem and had many other tribute owners calling them with the exact same problem. His response was that he wished he could tell me there was a replacement part available to fix the problem, but honestly, there isn't a fix.mazda has not corrected the problem.thousands of people are driving these vehicles, and many of them have experienced the same problem i have just described.this is a serious safety hazard, potentially deadly. Because it randomly re-occurs, you never know what the driving situation will be when it happens again. Because there is no corrective action available, we are told nothing can be done, and we must continue putting our families at risk.this is unacceptable.i propose we sellour vehicles back to mazda , and be given the opportunity to select a differenct vehicle that does not pose this hazard.
Vehicle stalled without warning when accelerating from a stop sign.the next failure occured when traveling at 40 mph accelerating on an entrance ramp.third failure occurred when decelerating to a stop sign.all dash lights come on and steering goes out, however, the vehicle will immediately start after placed in neutral.this vehicle has been to the dealer one time but the service department was unable to duplicate problem.dealer has been notified of the current failure but can offer no solutions.dealer has advised will contact their service rep.
I bought a 2001 mazda tribute (used) in march 2003. About a month later, it began stalling frequently - mostly when i was backing out of a driveway/parking spot. I took it to the local mazda dealership in july 2003 and they looked it over and could find no explanation, but they did a pcm update on it anyway. It continued stalling intermitently - no pattern to the stalling. I took it back in december 2003 and they again looked it over and could find no reason for it to be stalling. Since december, i've taken it to the dealership in april and twice in may 2004. In may, when mazda recalled the tribute for the stalling issue, i took it in for the recall - the stalling became 10 times worse, now stalling at stop lights and at random times driving down the road.we've replaced the idle speed motor, this did not help. I've contacted mazda directly and explained to them, in exacting detail, the issues i've been having. Their suggestion was to take it to the same dealership that has already tried to fix it 5 times. The warranty is no longer in effect and the dealership charges me when i bring it in, although this problem was presented well before the end of the warranty date.i love the tribute, but would love it more if i could get the stalling fixed.
After the vehicle sits for a period of 5-8 hours, it will not start up.it takes several times to get the vehicle started.it was taken to the dealer, where they could not replicate the problem.the vehicle seems to do this only if it is parked outside for long periods of time.when it is parked in the garage, it does not have any problems starting up, no matter how long it sits.if the vehicle is parked outdoors for several hours, it will not start easily.
Vehicle stopped & could not accelerate. Dash panel lights all came on.i was going slightly downhill & also car would not brake, so had to pull the emergency brake when i managed to pull to the right/side in order to stop vehicle.

He took the vehicle to dealer and told him probably had bad gas. Finallythe problem was diagnosed as a computer problem.
I was accelerating at approximately 60 mph andvehicle completely shut down.pulled to the side of the road and restarted the car immediately.took it took the dealer and they said they had several other vehicles brought in with same problem.mazda knoxville told me that i was in range of a cell phone tower and that it had shut my computer down which caused my vehicle to stall.they reset my computer and sent me on my way saying i should not have anymore problems.
The vehicle shut off (engine stopped) when coasting downhill toward construction barrels. Was able to avoid barrels by turning into unoccupied turn lane. Power steering had gone out. Power brakes had gone out.have owned the car for three weeks. Occurred once. Noticed that a recall (campaign id # 04v175000) that required reprogramming of the pcm module, and the symptoms of which exactly described this problem, existed for this vehicle model year.made an appointment with dealer to check the car the following day.the dealer told me that there were no open recalls on my vehicle so i decided to pay for a diagnostic test. The test uncovered that the pcm module did need the reprogramming which the dealer did, but they also told me that the car needed additional parts to completely resolve the problem which i had to pay for.from what i can tell the range of my vehicle id does fall within the range of vin numbers affected by this recall and the assembly date(12/00) also falls within the date range for this recall.i do not understand why the dealer does not see this as a vehicle that should have an 'open recall' and why the entire solution to the problem was not taken care of to remedy this.when the vehicle shuts off the driver has no control and this is an extreme safety issue.
Vehicle has stalled four times, mazda north america contacted by my atty after the third incident.we have received no response.car stalls when coasting down hill going 20 to 30 miles per hour.according to last work order from dealership on 1/28/02:program p.c.m. As per tech line.

Vehicle had a no-start condition 4 times, and a near-stalling condition one time with the check engine light on and the car backfiring and misfiring. All five occurrences were related to a faulty wire/pin in the steering column which kept becoming loose or disconnected. The first three time the vehicle left me stranded, the 4th time it died in the dealers own parking lot after an alleged repair. Vehicle officially became a lemon after the 5th breakdown. All incidents occurred between 6-16 months of ownership. After 25 months of ownership and much hassle and legal involvement, i received a settlement and a buy-back from mazda.

When i called to let the wantagh service dealer know about what happened, they were very nasty and acted as if i were complaining for nothing. I own a 2001 mazda tribute, which i purchased used in 2007.the vehicle went through six master cylinders within the first few months we owned it.it has been an ok car, but frequently and i mean frequently visits the mechanic to get fixed, whereas my other (foreign-made) vehicle rarely has problems - i will never buy american again!wednesday evening i picked up my 2001 tribute up at the mechanic from getting four new engine coils which had just been replaced two years previously, which my mechanic says should not have gone bad.thursday morning i had my two children in the car when i reversed out of my parking spot at a local church when the brake pedal went straight to the floor!the car kept going back and i had to use the emergency break to stop!!!!luckily i did not hit anything and no one was hurt.i had the truck towed back to the mechanic, which i had just picked it up from (this was the car's 4th visit in two weeks for broken parts).the mechanic said that the front left brake line had ruptured and the right one was cracked, so both were replaced.i am so thankful the brakes hadn't failed minutes later when my family would have been on the interstate!!!no recall has been made by mazda for this problem, but i have seen many similar stories from this vehicle.it is a disgrace and threat to not only the driver and passengers of these vehicles, but to everyone on the road!!!i'm scared to drive my car, not knowing if it will get me home safely or even go.i would never have purchased the car if i could go back and only wish i could purchase something different now.

I have a 2001 mazda tribute.recently i started having trouble starting the vehicle.it started but immediately stopped.i had to leave my foot on the gas for awhile before it would respond normally.this problem was completely random, not occurring everyday.the condition increased in frequency and finally my car started to die while i was driving it (if i released the gas for a turn, it would occasionally die).this almost caused a serious accident as i had no steering or braking when the car died.i returned the car to the dealership but they said there were no recall notices.their diagnostic equipment could find no problems, but the manager said this was happening to several early tributes and i should replace the idle air valve.replacing this has fixed the problem but this is a serious defect that needs to be fixed before someone is killed.

We avoid opening the rear glass but on accident the glass door was opened and it was the same scenario.

The engine stalled while the truck was being driven on a flat, dry road at about 40 mph. When that happened, the power steering and the power brakes stopped working, so the truck was very hard to steer and to stop. The driver pulled over and then was able to start the engine again. This has only happened once to us but this is still very serious. We think this should be considered a safety hazard for this truck.

Was traveling down a steep, curvey hill at approximately 35-45 mph when the vehicle stalled. I lost control of the steering as well as the brakes. The engine lights came on. I was meeting a vehicle at the time and luckily missed running into the oncoming vehicle due to incident occuring in a curve. This is the second incident that this has occurred. It has been reported to the dealership and they said that they had never heard of this occuring before now.this is a real safety concern for me and my family. Gg--ky dt
While driving on surface streets & going slightly downhill, the vehicle stall & stopped.all the dash lights came on.car would not accelarate or brake/stop (going downhill).had to use the emergency brake to stop vehicle.contacted the irvine mazda service dept. & they did diagnostic test on vehicle per mazda tech line.they could not find cause of this but informed that this problem has been reported by other tribute owners.concern was placed to both mazda service dept & they did not care that this problem could cause a major accident if it happened on a highway - they did not care.contacted mazda customer service & they never returned my call.the vehicle accelarates w/ a stall feeling also.
While going 35-40mph down long hillengine quit. Steering and brakes failed. Consumer doesn't remember ifdashboard lights illuminated.vehicle coasted down hill while standing on the brakes to stop. While slowing to proceed through yield-sign intersection, vehicle stalled while traveling at approx. 5 mph (right-hand turn).power steering, etc. Was lost...placed vehicle in neutral and restarted...as though one might stall/restart a manual trans. Vehicle (this vehicle is auto trans).on one other similar occasion, vehicle 'almost' stalled in the same fashion while maneuvering through service station islands (3-5 mph)...this time during a left-hand turn.vehicle seemed to lose power streering and 'almost' stall before returning to normal idle speed.

Engine completely shuts off with no warning while driving.you do not realize it has occurred until you notice your power steering has become stiff or you go to accelerate.the problem has occurred three times first time 10/2001, second 11/2001 third 5/2002.each time it occurred within first 30-45 minutes of driving and when the accelerator was not in use.
The engine cut out for no reason while driving, causing sudden loss of power brakes, steering etc.luckily, no other traffic was on the road or there may have been an accident.this is the second time this problem has occurred on this vehicle.one year ago, the engine stalled while driving while driving down a hill, and a multi-car accident was narrowly avoided at the bottom of the hill.the dealer claims that mazda told them to replace the "pcu" at the time, and then called me back later to confirm this was indeed the fix to this reported nationwide problem.obviously, since the problem has now re-occurred one year later, mazda's initial fix was wrong and mazda still does not know what is causing this problem.your website reports numerous similar consumer complaints, which is disturbing.what is the government doing to protect consumers?there should be a forced recall.this is a real safety issue - a downhill stall!!!must we wait until deaths occur?i would like to hear a response from nhtsa.i plan to forward this list of complaints to my congressman. Mr
Stalling issue, mazda has no fix, safety is at stake, help us!.

Tribute stalled on onramp for i495 at american legion bridge in va.speed was approximately 30mph.stalling occurred as onramp turns right and car was extremely difficult to steer to keep on the road and power brakes failed.nearly caused an accident with traffic on i495 travelling 60 - 70 mph.was able to restart car after safely steering and stopping in grass.this condition is extremley dangerous because of loss of steering control and brakes.

When coasting down hill at 30-40 mph and slightly appling brakes, engine dies, and the vehicle becomes inoperable.this problem has occurred 10 times, and the vehicle has been in the dealer's shop twice with the problem.the first time, the dealer had not heard of, nor could fix the problem.several months later, the dealer had heard of the problem, but still had no fix.mazda was contacted, knew of the problem, but had not released the fix.i contacted mazda, and was told that both mazda and ford engineers were working on the solution, and the dealers would be notified of the fix when available.if the solution is not resolved, i will persue a buy back under the lemon law.this vehicle is driven by our sixteen year old son who carries his younger sister also to school.we are greatly concerned for their safety.

The engine light came on and the engine stalled, losing control of the steering and the brakes.i had to coast to a stop in the center turning lane.after the vehicle came to a stop, i put the vehicle in park and restarted the car without any problems.if there had not been a turning lane, i would have crashed into the car in front of me.if i had been passing a car at the time, i could have been hit by oncoming traffic.this is the first time this has happened to me, but from researching this problem, it is apparent this is happening to many people.i took the tribute to the dealer and they said this problem was not occuring with my vehicle, but with the 2.0 liter engine tributes.he implied that i might have hit the keys in some way and turn the engine off. I got no satisfaction from the service department, so i had no option but to voice my concern about this safety issue.
While driving at any speed vehicle would shut off, and in doing so brakes and/ or steering did not work. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was aware of problem, but only had a temporary solution. This is about our 2001 mazda tribute lx , 4x4, v6.our vin. # [xxx], but your system is not accepting this number.our tribute has stalled more than 5 times over the last 2 years.we have called the mazda dealer to ask if they have had this problem with other tributes.they claimed they were not aware of that type of problem three occasions between april 2001 and november 2001.something we were doing wrong.august 2002, after another stalling episode we decided it was too dangerous and took the car into the dealership.they then informed us that they had a lot of other 2001 and 2002 tributes with the same problem.they had our tribute at the dealership repair shop for 63 straight days before the mazda h.q. Called us from irvine, ca to tell us that our tribute had been repaired and they were sure that it was not going to stall again because they had not had any other tributes that were repair for the stalling problem repeat the problem.about a month later our tribute again stalled exactly as it had done many times before.i was asked to come to the dealership and talk to them about buying the new 2003 model tribute at a reduced price because of our trouble.when we went to the dealer to drive the 2003 model we were told they could not let us drive the new model because it was stalling.dtinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Engine shuts down while in rush hour traffic - same location, same speed - has happened 20+ times.car has been taken to the dealership and i have called several times.dealership does not know how to correct problem.i have almost been involved in a rear-end collision 3 times because of this problem.there are other mazda tributes in my area having the same problem according to the dealership.
Vehicle has stalled 3 times at different speeds. Dealer has replaced sensor.
While traveling on a down grade at 35 to 40 mph engine will stall intermittently. Dealership has examined vehicle prior tolast incident, and replaced eec relay which failed to correct the problem. *et
I was driving approximately 40 miles per hour when the engine stalled, losing power steering, brakes, and clutch. Could not restart, so the dealership picked me up. Dealership stated the clip on the clutch had broken. This problem has only happened that one time, however on several other occasions the vehicle's idling has gone crazy and jumped and the vehicle acted as if it were going to cut off. This lasted several minutes and subsided. I was four months pregnant when this occurred and was almost hit by several vehicles because i had not been able to get the vehicle completely off the road. I am now driving around with a six week old child. I bought this vehicle because i thought it would be a "safe" vehicle for my son. I would like to know that it is!
I purchaseda 2001 tribute on sunday 6/17/01with 420 miles on it.two days later tuesday 6/19/01 the engine completly locked up on me twice in the same day.it now has only 562 miles on it.luckily both times i was able to avoid a wreck.the engine totally shuts down, meaning no steering, no braking.i was able to stop by using the emergancy brake after stoppping i had to put the car into park in which it then restarted.this all came if no warning at all.i immmediately took the car back.the dealership said they had not had any problems like this before or any others.i now see they must of been mistaken, becauseit seems to me that this is not the first time!!i will take as much of this info. With me back to the dealership and hope for the best.
Intermittently vehicle will stall while driving 35-40 mph.vehicle has been into dealer for repaires on 4 occasions, and the problem is reoccurring.
Engines shuts down while driving.this happens anytime or anywhere.leaving you without brakes or steering.mazda has replaced numerus parts but can never fix this problem.they also state that they can not confirm this but replace parts anyway.this is their way over covering their butts.my wife was almost in an accident when this happened last( its happened over 7 time in 14000 miles). The tribute died and she lost all power and brakes.she had to pull across on coming traffic and in to a parking lot to avoid rear ending another car only to be almost hit crossing the on coming traffic.does someone have to be killed before this is fixed!mazda needs to figure out the problem and solve it rather than making a guess about the problem and replacing parts that aren't broken!this is my 5 mazda and i wont buy another one!
While driving down a deep hill, engine cuts off.vehicle also failed once on flat surface.*jg
Engine failed while traveling approximately 35 miles per hour down a curved incline.was able to get vehicle to come to a stop along side of road.turned ignition to off and tried to restart vehicle.would not start.turned ignition to off again and waited a few seconds.vehicle restarted on second attempt.
Vehicle is intermittently stalling.at low speeds, under 40 mph, vehicle will stall while in motion causing loss of power steering and brakes.when vehicle was repaired by dealership resulting in problem happening more frequently than before.vehicle tends to stall on slight inclines or declines in the road.one stall nearly caused driver to rear end another vehicle due to loss of power brakes.vehicle is back at dealer for second attempt at repair of problem.dealership has provided above average customer service while handling problem however repair attempt has only made problem worse.after 1st repair attempt vehicle still stalls and has begun hesitating (nearly stalling) under acceleration. Mr
While driving in traffic, down a slight hill, engine shut off without warning. Second time this has happened. First time back in 2001, dealer had for 2 days, unable to find problem or correct. Consider this a serious safety hazard. Will contact dealer again.
Engine stalled going downhill between 45-50 mph. Dash lights came on, no rpms, could not restart while coasting. Pulled over to side of road, placed into park and was able to restart vehicle. Took it to dealership immediately the next day.
While driving at any speed vehicle could just shut down.consumer loses all power, like power steering and abs, and few other items invehicle.dealer diagnosed for electrical problem, but could not duplicate customer concern.
Our engine just shuts off when you least expect it as you are driving down the road.this results in a loss of brakes and steering.the only way to regain control is to put it in neutral and try to get it started again.per your customer complaint database and other web sites i have researched, there are a lot of tributes and escapes doing this.this is a serious safety problem!how many times does this have to be reported before something is done?mazda continues to make excuses for months now, telling owners, like myself, that they can't duplicate the problem and they can't fix it.they often refuse to give customers copies of repair paperwork when they pick up their vehicle.does someone have to get killed before this is resolved?my husband almost crashed last week going downhill when this happened the last time.do something to help tribute and escape owners!
Consumer states while driving without warning the engine light came on and the vehicle stalled resulting in loss of power steering and brakes manufacturer has been notified about problem however found no solution. Nlmdealer replaced pcm and relay.however problem still exist. Dealer will contact service manager to advise consumer of a recall for the windshield wipers that disengages when in use.
Engine periodically shuts down at low rpms.power steering and power brakes fail when engine shuts down and, as a result, the tribute is difficult to steer and stop.shutdowns have happened at least eleven times - always at low rpms (1000 rpm or less).each shut down occurred when i was coasting downhill.generally, i was also braking at the same time.the dealership's service department has been extremely diligent in their efforts but so far mazda has been unable to provide the technical assistance needed to resolve the problem.i bought the tribute in jan 2001 and expericed the first failures before the first 3000 mile servicing. The first dealer resolution attemptwas not documented.the technician queried the onboard computer but there was no code indicating any failure.on 4/28/02, after more failures, the problem was diagnosed as a wiring problem and "fixed". Three more falilures occurred before the tribute reached 6000 miles.the dealer could not duplicate but on 8/8/01 advised mazda.no repairs were made.engine shutdowns continued and on 10/09/01 at 7,639 miles, the dealer removed the bypass air control valve and cleaned the passageway - as advised by mazda technical assistance. The tribute then ran fine for eight months.then in june 2002, the problem reoccurred and the dealer was contacted.dealer still had seen nothing further from mazda concerning resolution of the problem and contacted them once more for assistance.suggestion was to "re-program" the onboard computer the next time the car is brought in for servicing.this is a dangerous situation and will utlimately result in an accident.so far, shutdowns have occurred while i was in an uncongested area but that is simply luck.mazda and ford have a really dangerous situation that needs immediate attention and resolution.so far i have received nothing from mazda letting me know there is a problem with the tribute.guess they feel it is not a problem as long as it can be ignored.
The vehicle has stalled several times without warning.the first two times the vehicle stalled while at a stop light.the second two times the vehicle was in motion.neither time did the check engine light illuminate.the vehicle restarts with no problem.consumer called the service department and was informed that there was nothing that could be done if the check engine light did not illuminate.*jg
Vehicle stalled at 30 mph, this happened once. Vehicle at dealer's at this time.
My 2001 mazda tribute stalls suddenly while driving.this has occurred 4 times since i purchased the vehicle in november 2000.my tribute is currently at the dealer for the third time for this "stalling" problem.i was contacted by an individual with the mazda north american technical headquarters april 12.the mazda representative asked a battery of questions pertaining to the vehicle stalling.fortunatley, no one has been injured at this time due to this problem which seems to have no resolution.
Vehicle will stall when coming to a complete stop while traveling at 5 mph.contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.consumer stated the dealer is unable to find the cause, vehicle stalls in the same spot virtually each time.
While traveling at any speed vehicle would stall without any indication.
While driving down hill engine will suddenly stall, causeunknown.took vehicle to dealer, dealer reprogramed computer chip. Problem keeps reoccurring.please provide any further information.
Vehicle would stall only when driving down hills. Vehicle been to dealer and problem reoccurring.the vehicle stalled three times before consumer took to have the vehicle repaired.the technician informed consumer that once the computer was reinstalled or reprogrammed it stuck.no one needing this repair has been back with the same issue.the vehicle stalled, this time on a flat road.consumer took vehicle back and was informed mazda and the dealership would be working on a resolution.the problem could not be duplicated.the problem is still reoccurring.*jg
Vehicle stalled without warning.no brakes, no steering.going downhill 35-40 mph.ended up going into oncoming traffic until i wrestled car back into lane.3rd time this has happened.mazda solutions are unacceptable.nlm
While driving at any speedand without any indication vehicle would stall. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further information.

Vehicle stalled 3 times around 30 mph. Consumer was able to return vehicle under lemon law.
Engine stalls while coasting downhill. The incident has occurred 3 times since i have had the vehicle. I am able to restart it after i pull over. I get the battery and engine light on. This last two incidents have almost caused me to be hit from behind.
The car has stalled 5 times during operation since we purchased it, last time on october 11, 2001. It has stalled on the road and in the middle of intersections. The instrument lights come on, power steering and braking disappears, and we have to turn the key and engage the starter. It does start right back up again. It is at the dealership for the 2nd time, but they cannot find anything wrong with it. Mazda has a case open and we have reported conditions surrounding the incidents twice (temperature, amount of fuel, road conditions, etc.).
While driving at 55 mph, vehicle will suddenly die, it happens right in middle of traffic or on highway, in one situation there was only 2 ways to go, and that was into a ditch or be hit by oncoming traffic, luckily another driver saw consumer coming and cleared the way. Consumer stated vehicle can not be restartd.
Car stalled with no warning, leaving driver with no brakes or steering. Two times was while slowing down, once while accelerating. Dealership has notified mazda, but insists i continue to drive the car until problem is found.
I had the tribute to the dealership twice for a so called fix, but i feel the engine shutting off while driving will happen again.the reason i feel this way is, because when it was in the second time for a fix they did the same thing as the first time.
Descending an over water bridge at 35mph when engine died with no advance warning.lost power steering and power brakes.was able to get the vehicle to the road shoulder without causing an accident.put vehicle back and park and restarted immediately.no recurrence yet.due to be seen at dealer on 23 may 02.research of your data base shows this is not an isolated occurence.no fatalities yet but only a matter of time.can see no evidence in data base that mazda has identified a cause or a fix.
Vehicle stalled, lost all power and almost caused an accident. Contacted dealer. Cannot duplicate problem. Consumer stated the dealer replaced an egr valve and boost sensor, however the vehicle continues to stall, also the check engine light illuminated.
Mazda tribute 2001 shuts off while driving without warning. This has happened twice and when it does, steering and braking become difficult. I have taken it to the dealership for repair, but they don't know the cause.
I am reporting what i believe to be a new serious safety concern with 2001 mazda tributes.the engine stalled while driving downhill, causing sudden loss of power brakes/steering, and i barely avoided a serious accident as i approached the bottom of the hill.i learned from dealer that i am the 5th customer at their dealership alone to report this problem (downhill stall) and that mazda has no fix yet because the problem is intermittent and mazda has been unable to duplicate.i believe the dealership is doing everything within their power.i am requesting that the government get involved and force mazda headquarters to step up their investigation and issue a warning to consumers before people die.
Engine stalled in 5:00 p.m. Traffic. Completely shut down. No brakes and no steering. Can't believe i did not get hurt or killed. Mazda must make a recall on tribute before someone is killed.
While going downhill at appximately 40 mph, engine stalled.lost power brakes and steering.able to stop car safely (barely).taking vehicle to dealer.had initally made an appointment since my engine check light came on 4 days before this stalling incident.i asked the dealer if i should still drive my tribute with theengine check light on, they said it was safe and not to worry.don't know if the two problems are related or not.
While driving 30 to 40 mph downhill vehicle stalls without warning. Also, vehicle loses all power. Vehicle usually starts back up again. This happens like once a month. Please add vin #.
Engine stalled while driving on a major road with heavy traffic.
While driving, vehicle will stall, the steering and brakes lock and consumer has not control, dealer has made repairs to the ignition switch and tapped new relay, however stalling still occurs.
While traveling between 30 and 40 mph engine stalled, causing a loss of power assisted components. Dealership was in possession of vehicle for twoweeks, and could not reproduce problem.

Engine just shuts off when you least expect it as you are driving down the road.this results in a loss of brakes and steering.very dangerous situation!! i have a fear of driving this suv. And i wish i could get my money back and get out of this unsafe vehicle.
Vehicle will automatically shut off while the consumer is driving, there is no warning signs regarding that problem. Contacted dealer who was not willing to do anything. The dealer informed consumer that mazda knows of the problem, they just dont know what is causing the problem.this defect creates a potentially dangerous situation because the vehicle loses power steering, it must be stopped completely and shifted into park before it can be restarted.*jg
My mazda tribute lost power while driving down the road at approximately 35 mph.road was flat and weather was clear.this happened out of the blue and no fix could be found as mazda was not able to replicate the problem.my infant daughter was with me and i am scared of this vehicle now.i feel that owners of these vehicles need to be warned and i wish i could get my money back and get out of this unsafe and potentially life-threatening vehicle.
While drivingvehicle will stalll and lose all power.took vehicleto dealer, and dealer replaced a delay chip in fuel pump, but problem still exists.
Vehicle stalls at speeds under 30 mph, with foot off gas, or when idling. Stall often occurs during a turn, disabling the power-assisted steering until engine can be restarted. (restart occurs promptly.) five visits to dealer service dept. Since 7/12/02 have failed to correct problem. Mazda-recommended service on power-train control module was performed, to no apparent effect. Related work done on idle, throttle, solenoid. Stalling continues.nlm
When the car engine is driven for more than 10 min and then shut off, when you restart the engine you get a strong fuel vapor from the vents in the car.also when the car is colling down like in the garage you get a strong fuel vapor from the passenger side of the engine.i brought the car back to the dealer for service and they said there is no fuel leaks and that it must be a new engine burn off smell.i have spoke to at least 12 people on edmunds .com who have the same problem with no solution. I hope you can help because i feel this could be dangerous.
Whenever vehicle has been started can smell fumes insidevehicle. Had not takenvehicle to dealership.
Vehicle would wander while driving at any speed, a loud squealing sound would come from steering wheel or column when making a turn, on cold mornings, there is an exhaust leak noticed from the underside center, continental tires size #16, dot #a3084531901, wearing on the inside edges. Dealer notified.dealer replaced the steering rack, however steering continues to be loose.*yd
I have had constant problems withmy mazda. In 2003 i had to get new sway bar links. This suv is treated well and should not of had such a problem so early. Than in 2005 had to have two coil packs replaced. 2006 had to have to more coil packs replaced ,thanks goodness i only have 6 coil packs.now the last three years i have had problems with my catalytic converters ( not sure if that is spelled right) but i had a new one put in because my suv would not run at all little did they inform me that my suv has four so now i am having the same problem because of another one going bad.
My 2001 mazda tribute will stall in the middle of traffic.i lose the ability to control the vehicle when this happens.in december 2007, my idle air control valve failed.i had it replaced by a mazda dealership service department. In september 2008, the idle air control valve failed again, along with the upper intake gasket.i had this replaced again by a mazda technician.on october 10, 2008, my vehicle stalled again due to the idle air control valve.i lost control of my vehicle and ended up in a ditch.i had the vehicle repaired again by a mazda technician, replacing the idle air control valve and the lower intake gasket.on october 16, my vehicle stalled again in traffic, i was very nearly rear-ended.mazda technicians keep instructing me to replace various parts of my car.however, the fact remains that they are unable to repair this vehicle sufficiently to prevent its failing again, leaving me extremely vulnerable to a potentially catastrophic vehicular accident.my vehicle is too dangerous to continue operating because of the shoddy and inept craftsmanship rendered by mazda.i am not alone in my complaints.the internet is filled with complaints relating to stalling problems of mazda sedans and suvs. Swift and decisive action should be made against mazda usa by the nhtsa to prevent the continued presence of dangerous mazda vehicles on the road.
There is a fuel odor coming into the cabin of the vehicle through the vents.it seems to get stronger as i run the air or heat and eventually gets to the point of smelling so bad, i have to roll the windows down to get fresh air.i have researched this problem and it seems several people are also experiencing this problem.it occurs everytime i use the vehicle.i have gone by the dealership and reported this issue and they said they can find nothing wrong.they said it might have been caused by taking my vehicle to other places to have the oil changed and they may have spilled oil on the engine.this is not the case.seems like this is a valid complaint since there are so many others with the same problem.it gets so strong sometimes, i get a headache from the fumes.this can not be good to breathe in these fumes.i hope someone can get this issue resolved soon.
The steering wheel wandered which caused the vehicle to change lanes at high and low speeds.ph. The emission light illuminated and the problem was repaired twice. The steering problem was repaired 6 times.
2001 mazda tribute lx v-6 engine.last year (2006) in the colder temps, mostly fall and winter, the engine runs so rough when you start it as if it has a terrible cold.letting it warm up, i have come outdoors to my car that it is no longer running due to stalling out.as the year progressed, i noticed that it no longera cold temp issue...now i notice in the summer months that it doesn't like to stay running at stop lights or parked.yes it has stalled at stop lights waiting and praying the light turns green faster.it seems hesitant to take off after displaying such effort to stay running at stop lights.help...how much is this going to cost me.
Consumer states the cause for the second engine stalling was a mass air flow sensor failure and it was replaced. The third engine failure was caused by throttle body and was replaced. The third replacement was done on 09/23/02 and the mileage was 19247
When driving at any speed engine cuts off, causing steering and brakes to lockup. Driver has to let vehicle sit a few moments and then restart the ignition. Dealer has seen vehicle several times and cant fix it.consumer stated that automatic windows malfunctioned.coolant light cames on and dealer determined that there was leak in coolant bottle. The engine light cames on due to exhaust gas recirculation valve failure.
The egr sensor was contaminated from exhaust condensation resulting in the check engine light illuminating. Nlm
There is a leakage from center area of exhaust pipe. Dealer was notified, and problemisreoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information concerning this matter.
After vehicle has been driven consumer noticed gas smell inside vehicle. Dealer has been contacted.there is widespread problem of defective intake manifold gaskets fuel seeps out after vehicle is warm and rests.intake is located near vent.
Fuel smell inside and outside of vehicle from leaking manifold gaskets know of many others that have same problem.
Gasoline smell is comingfromvents.after startingfumes smell is pumped intovehicle.it doesn't happen unlesstemperture reaches 60 degrees. Dealership states that engine manifold could be theproblem.
Passenger side rear door will not open from inside or out this is a major problem we have 2 children.
I were driving down a hill when my car engine dies while driving on the highway, the (radio dies, a.c., engine, and steering wheel tighens. This is the second mazda tribute i owned in a yearwith the same problem that the company can't fix.the other s are not as major.i feel this is a( lemon and a recall) if the company can't the problem.safety play a big part in this case when the engine dies for no reason.this is a highway safety issue.

The left headlight has collected moisture since purchasing the vehicle. We have dried it out once only to have it fill with water with one rain shower. The headlight is not cracked or open to view.
The vehicle pulled to the right so severely, that constant attention had to be maintained on the steering wheel.the pull was more severe at higher speeds.the dealer attempted to fix the vehicle 7 times, and they stated the problem was caused by crown of the road or the consumer's tires. Also there was condensation in the headlamp.
The headlight lens cover contained high condensation, the dealer replaced the cover.
When driving at highway speeds speedometer goes up and down. When driving and letting up on accelerator pedal, vehicle shifts into lower gear. Feels like brakes were applied very hard. Vehicle taken to dealer 3 times, cannot findcause of problem. Consumer states the cluster gauges are erratic, then the transmission shifts long or slow, on three different occasions, the transmission shifted from over drive to first, when letting up on the gas pedal it felt like the brakes were applied very hard, dealer stated the transmission was replaced. Vehicle has been worked on for water intrusion, carpet had to be replaced, dealer removed and resealed the windshield and repaired the rust in the windshield frame, rust also formed on the mounting brackets under the dash due to water leak, dealer removed and refit the left front fender to gain access to water leakage through the missed body seam and wiring harness.dealer replaced the fuse box to repair the radio and cluster gauges.turn signals are inoperable.consumer states the only repair completed was the replacement of the carpet.
Consumer is concernedwith fuel smellinside ofvehicle.
While driving at any speed vehicle would shut off, and in doing so brakes and/ or steering did not work. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was aware of problem, but only had a temporary solution. Consumer smells fuel inside the vehicle and took the vehicle to the dealer four times, but the problem was not found.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that while driving or when parked, a strong fuel odor emitted inside the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 00v277002 (fuel system, gasoline). The failure and current mileage was 167,000.
2001 mazda tribute has problems with fuel system.***no answer required*** .*mr upon inspection of the vehicle, the consumer was informed, that the gaskets at the intake manifold as wellas the fuel line inlet needed to be replaced.
At 1646 miles fuel fumes/odor enter intovehicle; vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on three occasions, and the problem still reocurring. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
An extremely strong fuel odor consumes passenger compartment of vehicle due to fuel leakage. Dealer cannot identifylocation of the leakage.please give any further details.
Wife stopped at gas station to fill up. Car would not start after fillup. Had car towed home. Determined it was a bad fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump. Should have been a simple repair, but it was anything but simple. Completed fuel pump replacement, with no further problems. About two weeks after replacing the fuel pump, my wife and i started smelling fuel outside of the car. I removed the cover over the fuel pump, but could not find a leak. I looked under the car, and observed a gas spot on the ground just forward of the fuel tank, but still can't find the leak. Car runs fine, but the gas mileage has dropped to about 10 to15 mpg, from 20 to 25mpg. There are no caution/warning lights onthe dash. Had an ase certified mechanic friend of mine look at it. He could not find the leak. Does not leak all the time, and when it does, it appears to be only a few drops. Mechanic recommended a fuel filter change, and perhaps a dye test to make the leak easier to see. We have had this car since feb. 2013, and the fuel pump is the onlymajor problem we have had, not counting the four new 16 inch tires we had to replace at the time of sale. I still love this car, v6, awd, sunroof, leather seats, ice cold air, cruise, tilt, power windows, locks, seat, ect.ect. Have had people swore it was a new car. They could not believe it is 12 years old. I take real good care of my cars. Wife swares i love it more than her. I have had my wife for over 20 years, and don't plan to trade her, or the car, in anytime soon.
There is a fuel smell in vehicle, conumer stated there was a tsb out on this. Intake manifold gasket soak upfuel and caused smell.
Fuel ordors noted in passenger cbin due to faulty intake manifold design. This just started. It will be reported to service department. You are provided this advance notice to start a database. This may not be an isolated incident.
Engine has stalled threetimes when driving between 35 and 40 mph, and going downhill on 25-jun-2001, 01-oct-2001, and 30-jan-2002. Dealership has examined vehice and replacedair intake manifold which failed to remedy the problem.reference investigation:pe 01-043.please provide any additional information / documentation.
After about 1000 miles of operation, the intake manifold gasket supposedly becomes saturated with gasoline and the gasoline smell is noticeable upon warm shutdowns and restarts.ford/mazda is suppose to be working on a replacement gasket, but nothing is official yet to the dealers.reporting this defect to nhtsa may help speed the process.thanks for your assistance.
A strong fuel odor is present after the vehicle is restarted after being driven for a while.the odor comes through the air conditioning/heater vents and is blown into the drivers compartment.it appears to be a leak in the intake manifold which allows gas vapor into the vehicle.gasoline can cause cancer and it a health risk for anyone breathingvapors.
Potential problem.there are open holes on the engine side of the fresh air intake box which could allow co2 and/or gas fumes to enter into the interior of the car.largest hole is located behind the shockabsorber housing on the left side of the engine compartment. Dealer and "lemon" west coast coordinatorshowno concern.otherwise a great car.
Fuel smell entering cabin though vents on all settings during warm starts.
I was stopped at a fast food place when my wife and i noticed a strong fuel smell coming from the right side of the vehicle. The drive through attendent told us that fuel was leaking outside of the car. I got out to see and there was the leak. Right under the pillar between the drivers' side door and the rear door.it was a steady drip.
Transmission has been replace (with a rebuilt trans) in sept.in nov, we had to have the rack replaced and the rear differential was leaking.the master cylinder cover was leaking.additionally we experienced a gas smell throughout the cabin.the left front window has had repairs.we have also experienced numerous squeaks and rattles all over the vehicle. Today while driving down hillthe vehicle completely shut down.i had no steering or brakes and had to stop the vehicle with the hand brake.this stall almost resulted in a rear end acciedent.lastly the tires had to be replaced at approximately 19000 miles.
Fuel odor coming from engine through vents.noticeable after a warm start of engine or while vehicle is sitting.no leaks can be detected.
Many other owners of the mazda tribute and ford escape also experience this problem.the dealer said it was probably a chemical burning off the engine - this doesn't make sense.the smell usually only occurs when you start after shutting off the vehicle for a short period.upon starting, a faint gasoline smell comes thtough the vents for about 15 seconds and then goes away.we(owners of this new type of vehicle) are concerned that there may be a leak/ larger problem.thank you.
While drivingvehicle will stalll and lose all power.took vehicleto dealer, and dealer replaced a delay chip in fuel pump, but problem still exists.
On 11/07/05 vehicle was brought in due to stalling when slowing and stopping.the engine sensor was replaced.on 11/08/05 vehicle was bought back still stalling.ac gasket and idle valve were replaced.we were told our engine was damaged and dealer would not fix.the day i picked up the vehicle it stalled at 60 mph.three days later it would not start.brought vehicle to local mechanic, fuel pump had to be replaced.the vehicle is undrivable.this is the second time i have filed a complaint about this vehicle.
Check engine came on. Checked everything according to owners manual, including making sure gas top was on tight. Took to dealer and they found a leaking vent line on tank. They said mazda told them to cap it off as there wasn't a service bulletin on this. Don't think this is a permanent fix. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis***760935
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.the contact heard a loud noise coming from the engine compartment when she turned on the ignition.the passenger compartment became filled with smoke.the contact exited the vehicle.when the smoke finally cleared, the contact raised the hood and discovered extensive damage.they vehicle was towed to a shop, and after two days of inspecting the damage, they believed that two of the injectors were leaking fuel and caused the engine to explode.mazda stated that due to the age of the vehicle and the fact that it was no longer under warranty, nothing could be done.the current and failure mileages were 82,000. Fuel odor in engine compartment enters cab via vents on warm restart.
The vehicle emits a strong fuel vapor smell, which is easily noted rising from the engine, when it is shut off hot. The vapors get into the passenger compartment, through the air vents, when the engine is started and when the vehicle is idling or driving slowly in traffic. Turning the ventilation control to off stops the smell inside. The vehicle also is getting only 15-16 mpg in mixed suburban/highway use.
Passenger cabin continues to get fuel fumes at restart.understand that this is a design problem and that new gaskets are in the works to correct.we expect dealership to replace old ones with new gaskets when available.check engine light has come on twice in first 2000 miles.both times we were told that gas cap was opened when vehicle was turned on.this has not been the case and we continue to argue over this.we refuse to pay the reset fee for the check engine light to be turned off.when we bought the vehicle, it was clear that mazda knew of this potential problem as the saleman went out of her way to explain that the cap must be tight at all times.this we have done.dealership currently looking at vehicle for this second check engine problem.
Problems with vehicle jerking, problem believed to be the result of a defective transmission. *mr the transmission was flushed but the problem remained the same.the dealer later replaced the transmission.(the vehicle would jerk between the speeds of 45-50, but after the replacement, down to 35-45 mph.the vehicle stalled while approaching a traffic light with no warning.the manufacturer refused liability.*scc
A severe gasoline odor. Happens various times. While driving, odor comes through the vents, or after turning off car, extreme gas odor. Happens a various times, at various speeds, at various levels of gas in my gas tank. We have taken it to the mazda dealership more times than i can remember. They have supposedly contacted mazda corporate and can never find a problem. The car completely shut down one time. I was able to pull over and re-start the car. The dealership could find no reason for this either but said they had a similar incident with another mazda tribute owner. I am obviously concerned about our health and safety with this vehicle. Thank you for any help you can give me. Andrea ledenbach.
Consumer smelled gas fumes around the outside of the vehicle. Consumer noticed a fuel leakage.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Engine check light came on, and consumer smelled fuel inside vehicle. Dealer informed her that fuel tank was leaking.but that fuel tanks were on back order. Could not give her a time frame, but assured her vehicle was safe to drive.

The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to have a diagnostic performed. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 00v277002 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery). The vehicle was not repaired. I had the same exact problem with my vehicle for two occurrences.each time i was coming down a hill and then all of my dash lights came on (check engine, oil, etc.).i was unable to steer or give it gas easily.each time i was not in a safe location, so i turned off the engine and the car restarted fine.i have had the car at the dealer i purchased it from since it occurred the 2nd time which was over a month and a half ago.they have told me numerous times that it is not doing it for them.the service manager caused me two weeks ago and told me the mazda manufacturer was in their office and he was aware of two similar problems in two other mazda tributes.i just wanted your office to be aware of this.i am very concerned because i was unable to get off the road on the 2nd occurrence and it was very scary.i just hope it can be fixed so i do not hurt myself or anyone else due to this problem.thank you for your help!!
Vehicle stopped & could not accelerate. Dash panel lights all came on.i was going slightly downhill & also car would not brake, so had to pull the emergency brake when i managed to pull to the right/side in order to stop vehicle.
Driver's side door handle broke off in my hand while trying to exit the vehicle.had to roll down the window and open the door from the outside.plastic door handles should not be used on any vehicle.this is a major safety issue and should have been on one of the many tribute recall lists!the dealership wanted to charge double to replace the door handle and i had it repaired at a nationally known car repair shop for less than half of the cost the dealership quoted.
Inner driver side door handle broken.door opens from the outside fine.
Driver's side door on 2001 mazda tribute suddenly won't open from inside the car. All door locks seem to engage and disengage correctly and car door opens easily from outside the vehicle. As a result, i cannot get out of the car without having someone outside open the car, or i roll down the window to reach the exterior handle, or i climb through the passenger side.
Three of my exterior door handles are broken and do not work. The front driver interiordoor handle is also broken.failure appears to be from poorly made door handles with sub standard materials.this is a high use item on the vehicle and is made from cheap, thin plastic. These parts are relatively expensive.i have never had issues like this with any other vehicle i have owned.
The inside driver side door handle of my 2001 mazda tribute completely stopped functioning. This was sudden, without warning, and permanent. The only way to open the door at this point is to roll down the window and open the door using the outside door handle. Thus, the driver is essentially trapped inside the vehicle unless they can access the outside of the car or exit using another door. This seems to be a very prevalent problem with 2001 mazda tributes based on a brief internet search.
Door handles both driver side and passenger side on my 2001mazda tributeare broken.this prevents me from entering my vehicle from the front of the vehicle.i replaced the inside handle but now the door latch assembly inside the door that opens the door from the outside is broken.this is not an isolated insident.theres a lot more mazda owners that have experienced this identical malfunction.there needs to be recall on this problem.in order for me to enter my vehicle i have to open the back door to open the front door from inside thevehicle.i guess some one has to be harmed because they could not get in their vehicle quick enough to escape harm.i guess recalls are only generated when there's bodily harm, then is to late.
The front driver's-side interior door handle broke off making it impossible to open the driver's door from inside.fortunately, there was electrical power available and i was able to open the power window and use the outside handle to open the door.if i had been involved in an accident which cause a power failure, i would've been trapped inside the vehicle.
Inside door handle on both doors has failed.
I am an owner of a 2001 mazda tribute. Of all things to make plastic they made the inside door handle chrome plated plastic. This situation exist from 2001-2004. The part number is ec01-59-330p. On top of everything else the part cost nearly $100 for an injected molded piece of plastic that must really be worth less than a dollar. To top that, they want up to $200 labor to replace it. I believe this should be considered a safety issue and should be covered regardless of time or mileage.
Mazda tribute 2001 - model es v6 - fwd 1. The vehicle is 7 years old.the vehicle is extremely well taken care of.mileage and gas fills, along with all maintenance records are meticulously kept.dealer maintenance only.2. Inside driver door handle is poorly crafted plastic coasted with silver overlay.handle performs lock, release, and latch functions.the handle came completely apart under tension causing minor injury to wrist.upon inspection of the handle, it appears to have cracked almost exactly upon a mold seem. This would indicate that the handle is not tested for strength to ensure compliance with proper exit entry of the vehicle.this potentially can result in problems extricating the vehicle in time of emergency. 3. Dealer maintenance is the only way to ensure proper installation and maintenance of the failed part. However, this is extremely cost prohibitive in most situations for a part of this quality to only be replaced with a part of the same quality. Plastic stamping inside the handle indicate 00 and 5.
I bought a mazda tribute new and it wasn't a year old when the inside drivers door latch broke. I have noticed many others have had the same problem. This is just the beginning of my problems.
We own a 2001 mazda tribute es v6 [xxx] .since purchasing the vehicle in august 2001 there have been three incidences of the inside door handles becoming non-functional and creating a hazardous condition where the doors cannot be opened from the inside (someone must open from the outside or you need to open the window and reach out to use the exterior handle to open the door).this creates a dangerous condition should the car be involved in a fire or accident where the occupant must quickly exit the vehicle.the interior door handle places a great deal of shear force on a small plastic pin that connects the door lever to the latch/lock/actuator.the driver's side handle has broken twice since 2001 and the passenger side door handle broke this week.i looked at the drivers side and the handle is showing signs of fatigue (stress cracks) in the plastic pin, so i will need to replace that before it breaks during a potential emergency. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
2001 mazda tribute driver's interior door handle broken.can't get out of the car without putting the window down.very bad safety concern if there is an accident.
Unable to open doors from inside of vehicle. After 90000 miles driver and passenger doors became inopperable within 2 days of each other. Driver's side could not be opened from inside or outside while passenger side door could be opened by rolling down the window and lifting up on outside handle. Shop determined that handle(chromed plastic) inside door mechanism(mazda part#ec01-58-330n)cracked. The handle has a 1/16th" raised catch that cracked off on both handles. The second incident happened just 10months later @109k once again both handles were involved but this time they were 1 week apart. The parts cost (as of 8/24/04) 52.29 + labor each. I have old parts. No children used these doors only 2 adults. This is a serious situation due to the inability to open the doors from the inside in the event of an emergency or the need to exit the vehicle quickly. You must first roll down the window & reach outside or if the vehicle is off you must restart to open electric windows if you have power at all, if not you are stuck inside and unable to exit.
1. Normal use.2. Broken door handles--within door. Front passenger can't open door from inside.3. I am looking for a replacement part.
I had a broken driver's side inside door latch break.i was charge over $300 to fix it.now, the same thing has happened to the front passenger side inside door handle.i've never had so many door problems with other vehicles.
I have a 2001 mazda tribute with the front doors not properly opening when the handle is pulled to open the door.i feel it is a safety concern because in case of an emergency it is hard to get out of the car.the problem started with the front passenger side about a year ago, and the driver side door started the problem about 2 months ago.i took it to the dealer today and they said it was going to cost over 200.00 to fix, and they were going to have to order the part.
The inside mechanism that opens the driver's side door broke. I opened the door from the outside, and when i tried to exit the vehicle, the door wouldn't open. I got home, and opened the door handle area and found a small plastic fragment that was broken. It is plastic, and snapped where the cable and this mechanism come together to open the door from the inside.
I cannot lock the driver side door.
Both front door handles have broke and cannot get out of car unless someone lets you out or you roll down the window and let yourself out.
2001 mazda tribute inside drivers door handle broke. Can not exit vehicle without climbing to passenger side.
Driver's door latch has become inoperable preventing normal latch operation for exiting of vehicle for the driver.
Drivers inside door handle will not open door. A critical part of the mechanism is cheap plastic. Mazda should recall this part because the problem has been reported by every tribute owner that i know and frequently appears in on-line complaint forums. I have been through two handles since owing the vehicle.
Driver side door won't open from inside.
Inside drivers door handle quit working. Door has to be opened from the outside.
The door latch on the drivers door won't open and i don't feel safe.if something happened and i had to get out, i would be in trouble.a friend recently taught me how to open the door by pushing the latch backwards.it has to be done by reaching across my body with my right hand and pushing the lock backwards (ex: like you're pinching something).there are too many complaints on this website concerning this same problem.why hasn't there been a recall on this problem??? the only benefit for this is if someone steals my vehicle and can't get out, resulting in being caught.
Inoperative interior door handle on driver's door.interior door handle will not open door.had to roll down driver's window to open driver's door.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.the contact stated that the interior door latchesfailed, and passengers couldonly exit the vehicle by rolling down the window and opening the door from the outside latch.the contact stated that there was a safety recall on this feature, but it didnot apply to thisvehicle.the weather and speed were not factors.the failure mileage was 60,000.
Dt:2001 mazda tribute.consumer states the doors will not open from the inside.the vehicle was takento the dealer, but they did not try to do anything, they would not even look at vehicle.the doors were on child safety locks, and consumerthought that may havebeen the reason for doors locking. However, when she took the safety locks off it did not help. Consumerreceived a recall, and called the manufacturer.she wasadvised to take the vehicle to dennison mazda.there was no information on the recall at this time.she took the vehicleto dealer, and was told they had to order the parts andshe wasto come back that following tuesday.when she returned to dealer, she was toldwarrantyexpired and they would not do the work.the recall wason a sensor.
Went to open driver's side door and it would not.broken driver's side door latch.can't open door from inside.must roll down window and utilize exterior handle to open door.
2001 mazda tribute-pulled on the interior door hand to exit vehicle and it broke. Now we have to roll down the window and open the door from the outside, then roll the window back up.if we got into an accident i may not be able to exit the vehicle safely, huge hazard. Have not had it fixed, dealer wants over $300. Crazy.
Door handles in mazda 2001 tributes break easily after normal use. Apparently a "plastic part cracks" on the interior door handle assembly thereby not allowing the door to open at all. This is alarming due to the obvious concern for safety of any occupant of the vehicle if an emergency were to arise and proper medical attention could not be made or it would be delayed. The poor workmanship has been addressed to the manufacturer but they have refused to review the matter.please investigate as i am concerned for the safety and well-being of my family. There was no accident, misuse or reason for the plastic part to break in my vehicle. My vehicle only has 25,000 miles on it.
Dt*:the contact stated the inside door locks failedto lock thevehicle.the driver's side rear door lock was alreadyreplaced.the driver's door will not unlock, and it will also have to be replaced.the door locks operated from the outside, but not from the inside.
Dt:the contact stated two of the inside door handles have failed.this happened on the front driver's sideand passenger'sside doors.the vehicle was taken to the dealership and were repaired both times.updated 11/29/2005 -
Interior driver door latch broken, can not exit using handle inside of door.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.the contact stated that the driver side door would not unlatch from inside the passenger compartment.the window was rolled down and she was able to open the door with the outside handle.the vehicle was not inspected by the dealer.the current and failure mileages were 72,000.
Driver side power door lock assembly broken and the door can no longer be opened from the inside. (with the ignition on, the window can be rolled down, and the driver can open the door using the outside door handle) this is an extreme safety hazard, as the driver cannot exit the car quickly in case of and emergency. This is the second time this has happened, and the complete power door lock assembly needed to be purchased to repair the problem. It is my understanding that this is a very common problem among mazda tribute owners.
My wife and i both drive a 2001 tribute and are unable to open the door from the inside on the driver's side door.she has already logged a complaint under her vin.this appears to be a common problem:http://www.mazdaforum.com/archive/threads/broken-door-handles--within-door-22516-1.htmlhttp://www.mazdaforum.com/archive/threads/mazda-tribute-door-handle-47953-1.html
Approx. 6 months ago the outside driver's side door latch on my 2001 mazda tribute (80,000 miles) broke and i had to have it replaced at my expense.a month ago the passanger door outsidelatch broke and i also had to have it replaced at my expense.a week ago the inside driver's side door latch broke and i am faced with replacing it at my expense.in virginia all door latches must work in order to get the vehicle inspected, so this is clearly a safety issue and should be fixed by mazda.
Driver side interior door handle internal mechanism breaks and prevents exit of vehicle through driver door.
There was a complete failure of both the mechanical and electrical door opening system on the driver's door of my 2001 mazda tribute making it impossible to exit the vehicle via the driver's door. Advised by local dealer that there had been so many calls that there was a national backorder on parts. Contacted manufacturer who advised no recall had been made for this safety issue.
Driver side door would not open from the inside.
Driver side inside door handle broke, have to roll down window to open door.look online it is a major problem with the tribute, i know 3 other people with this same car and all have had this happen, needs to be a recall on this problem.
Occassionally, while my car is idleboth parked but running or while i'm in traffic, the engine accelerates and the rpm gauge races.the engine will not stop racing unless i turn the car off.also, driver car door does not open from the inside, service dealer says i need to replace entire lock including components not covered under map.
I bought my tribute in february 2001 and in april 2004 the inside driver side door handle malfunctioned. When i attempted to open the door from the inside, the door handle would not work. I took my tribute to the dealership and paid to have this fixed. In july 2004 the same situation occurred to the front passenger side door. After two occurences, this is obviously a defect considering the vehicle is three years old. I am concerned about my family's safety in the tribute because you can not open the door from the inside.
The portion of the interior door handle with triggers the latch suddenly broke off, making it extremely difficult to exit the vehicle.this has occurred on both the driver and passenger front doors over the last few months.incident date recorded is the date of the second handle break.as a result of the failure, the vehicle is difficult to exit, requiring either a) rolling down the window and pulling on the exterior handle, or b) pushing extremely hard on one end of the lock, which will trigger the door to unlatch.while we have not experienced any negative consequences aside from inconvenience, in case of an emergency this could make the vehicle difficult to exit, especially if handle failure occurring suddenly to someone not expecting the non-functioning handle.the vehicle is currently under estimate for repairs.the old part remains on the vehicle and will be retained once repairs are completed.
Dt*:the contact stated the passenger side door lock broke.the door will not open from the inside or outside, either automatically or manually.the entry to the door is opened by the automatic opener or keypad.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and replacement of the door lock.updated 5/2/2006 -
Can not open driver's side door from the inside of the vehicle.assembly inside door is broken.took it to the dealer and they told be $290.00 to repair.they also took thebroken assembly which left me without the defective part to compare to.
The interior door handles on both sides (in the front) are inoperable.the only way out of the car is to open the window and open from the outside.if the event there was an electrical failurethe driver and passenger would not be able to get out of thevehicle.
2001 mazda tribute es v6...driver's side door handle broke under normal use.plastic piece broke off of handle... Cannot open door from inside vehicle.a relative of ours had the same proplem with her 2001 tribute. Her door handle came off entirely under normal use.
Inside driver's door handle broke unexpectedly and under normal use. I am the original owner of this 2001 tribute. Had to repair at my expense...obviously a common problem and unacceptable.
Both front side doors are unable to close, dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.the contact stated that the rear passenger, front passenger, and rear driver's side doors were defective.the doors could not be opened from within the passenger compartment.the front doors could not be opened from the outside.the contact took the vehicle to a mazda dealer and they stated that it would cost $400 to repair the rear doors and $500 for the front door.in addition, the rear driver's side door began sticking.the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 80,000.
2001 mazda tribute.both my husband and i drive a 2001 mazda tribute lx.his driver's side door will not open from the inside.now the same thing is happening with my car.we also have a friend that drives a ford escape (same car as tribute, not sure what year his is) that has the same problem.i am just wondering if there could be some issue with the mazda/ford handle/latch.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The vehicle identification number was excluded from recall #04v605000(latches/locks/linkages:hatchback/lift-gate:lock); however, the lift-gate on the vehicle was not properly secured. No repairs weremade. The failure mileage was 163,000. The current mileage was 165,000

At 15,860 (8/31/2001)the transmission was replaced on my 2001 mazda tribute. The transmission is still unstable and hesitates and makes noise. I'm at 58,000 miles and out of warranty. The car was returned once to the dealer and was not fixed. If i take the car back to the dealership, they will charge to look at. I have had numerous problems - including a defective master cylinder, headlamp and other issues and recalls. This is the worst automobile i have ever purchased and i think mazda and it's dealerships no this. I'm very persistant individual and i feel the average person would have had to pay out of pocket for some of the repairs i had done to my mazda tribute.
When driving speedometerwas out of control, and can't tellspeed traveling. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer indicated it was an electrical problem, and had repaired it. But problem still existed.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that while parked, the vehicle was shifted into the drive position and failed to move forward. The contact also stated that the rpms on the instrument panel became inoperable while gear shift was in the reverse position. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Put the car in reverse and could not get it out of reverse.steering totally locked up.i looked on google and this seems to be happening quite a bit and a few years have already been recalled.i was in a cvs parking lot when this happened.blocked traffic and people were not happy.
My transmission has failed twice. Both times thank god under warranty. After having the third transmission put in last week - it lit up yesterday with an coolant problem (they had just completed not only the transmission but a maintence two days before). It is now back in the hands of the dealer. From my reading this is an on going problem with the tribute. I am concerned, not only because i want a safe and good car but if it has already failed twice - what next? and will it still be under warranty. Why are these transmissions failing? what is mazda going to do about it. I drive a windy mountain road every day - am i risking my life and that of my children's in this thing?
First transmission shifted poorly and when in overdrive would shutter at low highway speeds. Second transmission gave no sign of problem. While driving on long highway trip the overdrive off light began to flash at which time i called my dealer and was advised that this was an indication of impending failure and should bring the tribute back in for service. I was then informed that the transmission was bad and had to be replaced again. Note: i drive mostly highway and do not tow anything. The transmissions all seem to shift in and out of overdrive alot.
My car had been starting off very slow froma complete stop.one day prior it would go into rev. The next day i am sitting at a stop sign and without touching anything the suv swifted into rev on its own and i could not pull off from the stop sign. It would revearse . So i had to drive it in rev down a long curvy road backwards hoping someone would not hit me or me hit anyone. Now it is parked cause i cant drive it. I have only had the car for three months.
Keys come out of the ignition when my mazda tribute is not in park. I forgot today that the front rotors are real bad and need replaced and i only have 41140 miles on my 2001 tribute which i bought brand new from the mazda dealer in town. I have to replace the front door handle twice now since it would not open from the inside.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that the steering wheel seized sporadically while driving at low speeds and a loud noise emitted from under the hood. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that transmission fluid was leaking and the tie rod was fractured. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 162,000.
While driving about 50 mph and when stepping onaccelerator pedal, vehicle will not accelerate. Also, transmission only will work in reverse.the transmission failure was the cause for no forward movement of the vehicle and was replaced.
Transmission feels like it's "slipping" at or around 45mph. Down shifting is occurring while driving at a consistent mph.once at 55 it's okay.
I have a 2001 mazda tribute.had been faithful in doing regular maintenance of the vehicle. The car had 84,000 currently and had the transmission fluid flushed at 60,000 miles. The transmission fluid was filled every 5,000 miles whenever i had a oil change. All of a sudden on april 30, 2007, the car could not be shifted into rear gear and the dealer indicated i need to replace the transmission.
Mazda 2001 tribute suddenly stopped making a strange noise.then gear box did not work at all. So, i had to calla towing company to tow the car to a mazda dealer shop.oak tree mazda dealer inspected the car and asked about five thousand dollars to replace whole transmission. At the time, mazda tributerecorded only 45k mile. I asked another machine shop to inspect this car. He has never seen this problem before. It seems to be a design problem of mazda tribute.
I drive a 2001 mazda tribute that has about 75,000 miles on it. The transmission fluid has always been a rust-colored and we thought it might just have to do with the dealerships work. I was driving it one day and noticed that while i was driving at 30 mph, the rpms were in the "red zone" so i brought it in for repairs to learn that the entire transmission had to be replaced.
On july 9, 2007, i paid to have my transmission rebuilt after a transmission failure in our 2001 mazda tribute, (es-v6 4wd), resulted in stranding my wife and young daughter on a busy roadside, 45 miles from home, in san leandro.at the time of the transmission failure the car had 93,782 miles on it. I purchased the mazda new in 2001 from the almaden mazda dealership in san jose.(now capitol mazda).the transmission repair involved towing the car to a shop and rebuilding the automatic transmission.the rebuild included replacing the torque converter, solenoids, direct drum, shell, pistons, and a valve body upgrade among other parts.the repair cost was $3085.00 plus towing charges.the incident also resulted in the loss of use of the car for 1 week.at the time of the failure the car was out of warranty, and i considered myself an unfortunate victim of unusual circumstances.however, since that time i've learned that transmission failures in the 2001 mazda tribute and the cd4e automatic transmission are an all too common occurrence and that my experience is not rare at all.in fact, reports on the internet suggest that the occurrence of similar transmission failures at relatively low mileage, between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, is alarmingly common in the mazda tribute.
When starting vehicle and proceeding from park into traffic vehiclehesitates and nearly stalls, cause unknown.dealer cannot identifyproblem.please give any further details.
There is something very wrong here with this vehicle, i have had 2 transmissions counting the first one installed by mazda. I found this site today and read what i have been looking for. Consumers who are at high risk driving an unsafe vehicle.the fact that it completely stalls while driving is unacceptable. This is a harmful and expensive vehicle to operate. I also found that mazda and or any dealership involved with this vehicle is not going to support the consumer at all. I had to pay for 2 transmissions of 9500 total.no help at all from mazda, or ford for the bad transmission i got on the 2nd time it failed. It is now dead again in the driveway, less than a year after the 3rd transmission was installed. I hope someone gets madza or our government to step in and take care of this matter as it is huge safety problem.if it was a toy for a child it would of been recalled, if it was a building product it would be recalled. What is wrong here mazda-ford. Why don't you take care of this?
Dealership replaced the automatic transmission on october14, 2003. Anindependent shop onmarch 2004replaced the engine.currently, consumer indicated that vehicle was at an independent shop toreplace the catalytic converter for a third time . July 2005 the vehicle was taken back to the dealer because the check engine light illuminated.
I have had a problem with my transmission shifting hard and sometimes jerking when on going up hill. I have had many auto services check into it but they can not find a reason for it because it doesn't do it all the time. And mazda usa refuses to look up or fix recalls on my mazda because it was made in canada but i bought it in kentucky new. I bought it in the usa and it is a mazda and i feel mazda should fix it. My battle with mazda to fix my tribute started in 2002. I know i have a recall on the computer system. Canada told me that it needed to be reprogrammed. This could be related to why my problems with my tribute come and go. I do not trust it anymore.
This complain concerns the powertrain - automatic transmission. The car, was parked during the day in a standard parking spot. When i later tried to back up, it would not go into reverse.it had worked perfectly that morning! the car was brought to a local mechanic. They stated that reverse, drive and second did not function. This is the second transmission which had been installed by this mechanic in this tribute! it had only 39,000 miles. It was installed in 2007. The first transmission failed at 110,000 miles. The mazda corporation would not admit to a problem with their transmissions at the time the second one (a mazda transmission bought directly from a mazda dealer)was installed). The mechanic, in good consciousness, will not replace this a third time. So we are left with a perfectly good body, new tires, and a car that is junk. The mechanic said this transmission is poorly designed. All we can do not is donate it or part it out. We bought the car, used, from carmax in roseville, ca, in 2006.
Transmission stopped working in reverse gear.
Complete failure of transmission.no warning symptoms of any problem.mileage at failure was 71,000.mileage at last transmission flush was 48,000.after failure was inspected by service techs at the dealership, they noted that the transmission fluid was very clean, which was described as non-typical of such a failure.further investigation is pending to determine whether mazda will participate or contribute to a remedy.
Tribute would make slipping noise when on a hill.it would also shutter when i first took off.i called the dealership about the problem.they thought it was the transmission, but couldn't look at the car until after the first of the year.about 2 weeks later, i took off and the car surged.i pulled off the road and when i put the car back into drive, it wouldn't move.it was towed to the mazda dealership where it still sits.i was told it needed a new transmission that would cost $2900+.the district manager was notified.they took $1000.00 off the price.which leave me paying only $1900+ the other $900. I've put in this car since july 04.i had a full circle service inspection done on oct.25 ,2004. The transmission condition was good at that time, just 2 months earlier.
2001 mazda tribute transmission failure. This has occ'd twice. Last winter on an los angeles freeway in the middle of the night and last week on a mountain road. This is the second transmission failure.both times it was replaced under warranty but i am afraid it will occur again.
Erratic shifting patterns, 6 visits to dealer with no resolution to date.
The transmission has a tendency to slip if the vehical has been sitting for an extended period of time, several hours to overnight.the vehicle will start fine, but when i have to come to a complete stop, such as at a stop sign, when i step on the gas pedal, the vehicle will hesitate for a few seconds, and then finally decide to accelerate .this causes a problem when you are trying to pull out into traffic.notified the dealer, but service dept said that if they could not duplicate the problem, then there is nothing they can do.dealer is located 1-1/2 hours from where i live.due to dealer attitude, and the fact that i would have to take time off from work to go up there, i am debating whether or not i will bother taking the vehicle in at this time.
2001 mazda tribute es-4wd. At 39k miles the cd4e transmission had catastrophic failure while driving in town.the cost is expected to be around $3.5k to replace with a rebuilt unit. When we did our research no mention of this problem was raised by consumer reports etc... Yet after the failure i conduced research and found this failure is not only common it has been occuring post warrantee at low miles for years and mazda and ford have done nothing to effectively remidy or compensate their customers. Their only consequence is they are at the bottom of the auto industry and appear to have earned it. Don't get ripped of like we did buy buying a ford or mazda that will fail. Buy a better car product with better warrantee and reliability.
Mazda tribute 2001.while stopped in drive (automatic transmission; cruise control off) with foot on brake, engine suddenly revved to 4000 rpm.had to use hard, full braking plus emergency brake to keep suv from moving forward and hitting car in front of me.in neutral, engine revved at 4000 rpm.turned engine off and restated -- situation has not repeated yet.
At 36000 miles automatic transmission failed, at 4500 miles automatic transmission failed. At 45k000 miles altenator failed.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.in june of 2009, the overdrive light illuminated automatically followed by the engine light.the transmission began to overheat as well.the failure occurred without warning.a diagnostic was performed and the contact was informed that the solenoid kit for the transmission needed to be replaced.the contact paid for the repair, but would like the issue investigated because she feels it was due to a safety related defect.the failure mileage was 115,000.
I drive a 2001 mazda tribute 4x4 with 67,000 miles on it, and a few weeks ago, during takeoff the vehicle seemed to hesitate.over the course of about a week, it got worse.we took the vehicle to jim ellis mazda of marietta and they informed us that the transmission was going on the vehicle, and that mazda would possibly pay for half.they contacted mazda, but mazda would only pay 1/3 because they said there were no maintenance records on my transmission.there aren't any records because the vehicle hasn't needed any.after keeping my car for over a week, they phoned me to inform us that the transmission mazda corporation sent them was bad as well.considering the low mileage and the second transmission had defects, i'm now concerned that there is a defect in all the 2001 transmission, and makes me wonder how many other 2001 mazda tributes have had to be repaired.
While driving and making a left hand turn vehicle suddenly died, no prior warning. There was not steering or braking.consumer had to stop vehicle with emergency brake.vehicle was stuck in traffic.consumer had vehicle towed to dealer ,and dealer replacedelectrical relay system. However, problem reoccurred on july 3, 2001 while traveling at 45 mph on a declinevehicle died, andemergency brake would not stop vehicle.eventuallyemergency brake kicked in and stopped vehicle.consumer stated that when trying to start again, there were no transmission lights, and would not go into gear.consumer had vehicle towed to dealer, and they could not duplicateproblem.please provide any further information.
At speeds around 40 to 50 mph it feels like the transmission is slipping weather i am accelerating or coasting.i also see the tach needle jump around when this happens.the slipping feels like a vibration in the vehicle and there is a lost power.past this speed range or before it the vehicle operates normally.dealer could not fix or reproduce the problem.
Automatic transmission failure.
Mazda tribute left my family sitting in traffic. Complete and total failure of transmission with no warning. Vehicle has less than 20k miles. Clearly a factory defect.mazda only gave $1000 off repair.
My automatic transmission is stalling while driving at speeds of over 40 mph. This problem has occurred to my vehicle 4 times over the past 10 months. Each time the dealer insists that the problem has been fixed, but then it happens again. All four times that it has happened i have been driving on the same road, which is a one lane road through a very hilly and curvey section, and have almost caused a collision each time. When the car stalls, the power brakes and steering are lost, making it almost impossible to stop the out of control car. Because of my quick thinking, i was able to put the car into neutral, restart the car, and put it back into drive in enough time to avoid a collision. I do not feel safe riding in this car with my children, and mazda has no idea how to fix this problem. Two of my co-workers have the same vehicle. One of them had this same problem four times and finally had to get rid of the car because mazda couldn't fix it. My other co-worker has only had the problem once, but it can happen at any time. This is more than just a coincidence that the only two people i know with this car are having the same problems. This car is a hazard to all drivers on the road.
Consumer states the transmission on vehicle constantly stalls and jumps in/out of gear while driving.transmission has already been replaced 2x and is currently w/dlr for 3rd replacement. Mr
2001 mazda tribute transmission failure. This has occurred twice. Last winter on an los angeles freeway in the middle of the night, and last week on a mountain road. This is the second transmission failure.both times it was replaced under warranty, but i am afraid it will occur again.
2001 tribute seat belt buckle cover replacement recall i503l.*mrthe consumer scheduled an appointment to have two recall done seat bet buckle cover and powertrain control module.the dealer refused to do the recall because the check engine light was on.they offered to repair the problem but refused to do the recall until the repair is done.
The engine failed three times without warning while the consumer was traveling on highway. Cause for the first failure was the pcm problem and it was reprogrammed and updated eec relay was also installed.
I have just found this website and realized that an existing problem that i had been complaining about in my car.the dealer claimed the problem didn't exist ,even after the first recall. I brought in to fix. I had no knowledge of the power train recall the manufacturer never informed me of this problem at all nor the dealer. I've been an owner for 6 years.an extended warranty, i am apauled at the way mazda ford dealers handle there customers after repeatedly telling them of this problem. I'd like to know what i'm going to do at this point but to engage a petiton to my friends and family not to buy this product ford mazda. I think this is wrong on your part what cani do about this problem now that it's getting worst . You've put my life and my families life at risk knowing that if my car stalls out while driving which it has already happened on a few occasions. The last incident was coming home from peekskill ny and the car staled on me 6times.please let the dealer know this is a real problem.
Occassionally, while my car is idleboth parked but running or while i'm in traffic, the engine accelerates and the rpm gauge races.the engine will not stop racing unless i turn the car off.also, driver car door does not open from the inside, service dealer says i need to replace entire lock including components not covered under map.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.in 2004, the vehicle unexpectedly stalled while driving under 50 mph.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they adjusted the pcm module, which was under a recall.the repair seemed to have corrected the failure; however, four years later, the vehicle is experiencing the same failure.she took the vehicle back to the dealer, but they could not find any failures.the failure could not be diagnosed because it is intermittent.the vehicle is currently at the dealer.the failure mileage was 40,000 and current mileage was 78,000. Updated 09/10/08. *ljupdated 09/11/08.
2 complaints:itook the car to a mazda dealer 5 times starting back in 2003.3 times for recalls ,and on each occasion had brought to the attention of the servicerepresentative e that therpms would just all of a sudden go up rapidly, and the only why to stop it was shut it off. Of course this was always while waiting at lightswhen i wouldfirststart the car in the morningbut now was at leastoneweek.they put it on the computer back when itfirst startedand said it was the pcm modular.t was also replaced along with the firstrecall . The car was okay for about 6 months and then started doing it again the same thing, the rpms rapidly cameup- this time was already a recall so they fixed it again with another new pcm, but once again it did the same thing after about 8 months.i took it back again with another recall on a different matter, seat belt assembled, and told them the same thing was happening. By this time the warranty was out but because it had been in before for this they were able to get the mazda to cover the part again, $1200. The problemstarted again and i could not afford to replace this parts again. Ididn'tthink it was diagnosed correctly from the beginning. Now it stalled without warning while iwasdriving the steering and everything locked because of loss of power this happened on a regular bases. . i have held off on complaining, but this has gotten out of control. I thought maybe i just got a lemon, then iread the other compalints of the same things. I am a single mom and need this fixed for good. I didn't blame the dealer for the car troubles i blamedmazda for a poorly made suv.i have low mileag eon the car, buti hate driving it for fear of what will happen next.
The auttomatic transmision ofmazda tribute suddenly stoppedrking while i was driving on the 495 washington area beltway.
I had the 1904-d recall (recalibration of pcm) done on my mazda tribute about 1 week ago. Shortly thereafter, my car stalled on the interstate at 75 mph. We did not have an accident but it could have been pretty severe. After bringing the tribute back to the mazda dealer, the pcm had failed. So the recall didn't work on my vehicle. The dealership refused to perform the pcm engine stalling recall 04v157000 unless a diagnostic test was performed in which the recall part was the failure code. If not the consumer will be charged $80.00 dollars.
My 2001 tribute had a problem shifting in/out of overdrive - a shuddering as if it couldn't make up it's mind.2 calls to mazda and 2 calls to dealer gave same results - "what problem" but web sites say it is common.dealer claims failure to change xmsn fluid at 22500 may have caused it; problem happened way before that (summer 2002) and now (feb 04) conditions worse - won't shift. Won't accelerate.dealer changed fluid, reprogrammed pcm; said it was fixed, but it is still the same.i think they are waiting for warranty to expire.car is unsafe to drive, but i have to take it back.this trend seems like a "lemon-law" case and a lot of us need help, like a mazda recall.
I own a 2001 mazda tribute. The vehicle stalls unpredictably.the mazda dealer and mazda corporate are suggesting that the two power train control modules (the original) and the replacement modules are causing the vehicle to stall.if this is correct, then there must be some inherent defect with these pcms that must be investigated.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. While driving at speeds of 3 mph and parking the vehicle, the gear shift selector fractured. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where the transmission shift cable and lever were replaced. The failure mileage was 39,154 and the current mileage is 39,283. While driving, shift cable came loose from back of the shift lever. Unable to change gears.consumer stated that the vehicle stalled out and would not re-start.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.while driving 45 mph, the vehicle made a series of grinding noises and the check engine light remained illuminated.the vehicle stopped accelerating.the vehicle has been to the dealer five times and they claimed to have adjusted the linkage.the current mileage was 90,000 and failure mileage was 70,000.
Known problem in transmissions used in ford escapes and mazda tributes. Problem with torque converter lock not operating properly. Ford issued oasis fix and tsb but refuses to acknowledge problem when vehicles off warranty. Has existed and been unofficially acknowledged by ford since 2001. Has resulted in complete transmission failure of vehicles being operated at highway speeds. Personally, problem has returned for 2nd time in 7,000 miles after factory "fix".
Torque converter & transmission on 2001 mazda tribute failed.
Shutter of the transmission/torque converter when traveling around 45 mph. Problem firstreported on the vehicle around 30,000 miles at which time the dealer flushed the transmission fluid per tech assistance ref. 272101. Dealer determined "no problem found" when the shutter was reported again at 48,000 miles. When the problem was reported at 51,000 miles, dealer again flushed the transmission and reflashed the pcm. The problem occurred again at 56,000 miles at which time the dealer determined the transmssion needed to be replaced. Transmission was replaced at 58,500 miles. Problem discovered again around 88,000 miles; again, dealer flushed the transmission. Problem occurred again at 98,500 miles at which time the dealer replaced the torque converter.
Clutchis not working properly.when applying clutch it will not work at all,and at other times it will work normally. Contacted dealer anddealer was not willing to do anything.
The clutch plate did not work properly.

In june 2001, the rear differential seal failed with only 4800 miles on the car. It is unknown if the seal failure resulted in damage to the axle assembly. On july 19, 2001 the tension rod spring that holds the serpentine belt in place completely disintegrated , leaving metal shards, springs, and belt on the ground.fortunately, the car was not in use at the time, or major damage to both the occupant (my 18 year old daughter) and the car would have occurred. At that time, the car only had 5400 miles on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The transmission failed while driving on a one lane highway.nlm
Vehicle feels sluggish while accelerating, transmission is not catching when the gears should change, dealer can not remedy problem and has offered consumer the option to return the vehicle and accept the rollover amount.
Since the first months of ownership, of all the times we have contacted the dealership and taken our car into the dealer, they never recognized the recalls. We have paid for repairs and have not been reimbursed. The last time, due to a recall item, we returned the car within days of "repair." we took a notice of recall letter into the dealer service department. They kept our car for almost 2 weeks, in part due to the fact that they had an accident with our car during a test drive. They did a poor job on the body work and the car transmission still gives us trouble. The car stalls and surges.

My 2001 mazda tribute's transmission has failed.unfortunately i'm having to have it rebuilt.per mazda consumer message boards this is not an unusual situation.the manual transmission fails with little to no notice.2nd gear disappears at certain temperatures, and there is no gear grinding which is common with a stripped gear.there is also an issue with transmissions getting stuck in reverse and not coming out.there is obviously a manufacturing issue as the remaining gears disappear altogether.everything i've read on the message boards i have personally experienced in the past week with my vehicle and as this is not an isolated issue i'd like to know why no recall was issued?

Consumer received a recall notice from the manufacturer concerning seat belt buckle failure. Consumer contacted the dealer, who was not aware of the recall. Both manufacturer and dealer were not trying to accommodate the consumer on this issue.
I got in my car after work and attempted to put on my seat belt. It would not latch. I tried for over 10 minutes, to no avail. I had to drive home approximately 20 miles at midnight on the freeway, not wearing a seatbelt. This was very frightening because i always wear a seatbelt. In addition, it is illegal to drive without a seatbelt in california.

I bought this car from a guy in july of this year and he said "the gas pedal gets stuck sometimes but if you just pump the pedal several times it should stop". Well the gas pedal doesn't get stuck sometimes, it gets stuck all the time. It gets stuck and either causes the car not to start or it causes the engine to rev. When i am driving it'll get stuck and accelerate the car when i'm not even pressing the gas pedal and sometimes it causes the brakes to not work either. The only reason i haven't gotten in an accident yet is because it is a stick shift and i'm able to pull it out of gear but it still causes the engine to rev and isn't safe at all. A few weeks ago i was doing some research and found out that there is a speed/throttle cable recall on 2001-2005 mazda tributes because of the exact issues described above but when i searched my vin number on the recall list/called the dealership they said my car isn't on it and i 100% believe it should be because it matches the exact same year/make/model and issue on the recall. I don't want to pay to get this fixed because it's not my fault this was improperly manufactured (and i can't afford it) but i also don't know how much longer the car will run like this before the engine is blown or i get in a car accident. Is there any way my car can be added to their recall list?
When i amdriving on a local drive, and tried to slow down for the construction work about 50 yards in front of the vehicle, i stepped on the brake and felt no brake at all, even i stepped all the way to the bottom. I tried again and again, and the same thing happened. I almost thought i was in a dream, a nightmare. Then, i remembered the hand brake, which was more or less functioning at the time, and also shifted the gear toward parking. At the same time, i was looking something that could put the vehicle at the full stop. Fortunately, it was a slightly uphill drive and no other vehicles behind or in front of me. So the vehicle stopped slowly, after it was on the parking gear. I called aaa. When the help from aaa came, he pointed out to me that there was some fluid gushing out from underneath the hood at the right front, next to the wheel. I did not recognize what it was then. After it was towed to a mazda service shop, i was told later that one of the brake pipes exploded, and the other one was nearly exploded. The brake sensor light was not on until at the time the vehicle was towed. The total cost of the repair was $568.81, including fixing the right front axle abs sensor ring that was cracked.
I have just replaced the master cylinder and brake booster on this vehicle for the third time. This time, brake fluid actually leaked into a puddle under the car. There was a recall on the cardone aftermarket master cylinder, but the original failed, then two others, not cardone. My vehicle does not have abs brakes and is not covered under the current recall, but nonetheless, there must be a structural defect with the vehicle that causes the leak.
I was at a red light making a right turn. The light turned green i proceeded to drive the vehicle speed went from 25 mph to 40 mph and breaks failed. I was able to stop the vehicle and then put it in park. The engine was still racing and i shut the car off waited about 5 min turned the car on engine was still racing and then all went back to normal including the breaks.
My brake light keeps coming on and going off while driving.no apparent braking problems.dealer says i need new brakes and master cylinder without even inspecting.when i mentioned the many complaints regarding brakes on this web site for this make/model vehicle, he was not concerned - just said he was sure that is what the problem is.i have less than 20,000 miles on my car - have made several long trips but very little stop and go driving.i find it impossible to believe i should need new brakes and master cylinder. Will have assessed by independent service provider.
I have had to have my brakes and rotors replaced twice since i've owned this car.the first time was at about 20,000 miles and the last time was at about 40,000 miles.both times it was under warranty, however now this vechicle is out of warranty and i fear that this is going to be a reoccuring problem. Not to mention that in between the times the brakes were replaced the vechicle was taken to the dealer numerous times for brake squels when stopping.even after the rotor and brakes were replaced, this noise it still present.i plan on selling this car at this point and cutting my losses, however now today a recall has come out for a stalling problem.once this is fixed this car will be sold to anyone willing to buy this bag of bolts.

2001 mazda tribute.consumer writes in regards to the vehicle subframe corrosion recall notice.the consumer received a recall notice in early june. However, she had already paid for the repairs.so, she submitted a request for reimbursement, along with a synopsis of the trouble she experienced. The consumer received a letter of denial from mazda, stating the parts that were replaced or service completed, were not considered covered items under the subframe corrosion recall. On december 26, 2012 while driving on the highway, the consumer noticed a decreased control over the steering. The vehicle fish-tailed multiple times in light snow, which had never occurred before. Due to her steering difficulties, she drove at 30 mph, yet still spun out for no apparent reason. No one was injured and she only hit a median which caused damage to the rear passenger side tail light and body damage. At the time, she attributed the incident to winter weather conditions. However, it made far more sense in the context of the recall. In january 2013, she continued to experience steering problems. She attempted to get an alignment, but ran into problems due to the subframe; which was the first time, she heard of trouble with the subframe. According to invoice, the caster was not adjustable without the subframe adjustment and possibly more. It was 0.3 degrees from acceptable range, may demonstrate a slight lead or pull. The consumer experienced problems for the next two years.the ball joint and right control arm were replaced. The mechanic informed the consumer the control arm looked as if it was ready to break off, due to corrosion.also, the left front control arm, along with the struts, rotors and brake hoses, were all replaced.
On saturday, may 15, my daughter and i were traveling in our 2001 mazda se lx. In st. Paul, mn. My 22-year old daughter was driving. We were sitting at a stop-light when the brake pedal slowly dropped to the floor.there was minimal braking power left, but enough to get home.on mon, may 15, vehicle was towed to our repair garage and diagnosed with two front brake hoses (adjacent to wheels) that had "exploded " after investigation, we learned that brake-hose failures of ford escapes and mazda tributes of that era were extremely common.in a 2 - 3 weeks, we're replacing the rear hoses for safety. I do not know why mazda has failed to issue a recall with respect to this issue.. While the vehicle has had more repair issues than any other i've owned, this issue is potentially lethal, particularly if one is traveling on a highway.a recall should be required immediately on these hoses.i have asked for mazda's assistance in addressing a complimentary rear-hose repair. They expressed doubt about trying to help because of vehicles age and mileage -- 9 years, 117,000 miles, however vehicle has been well-maintained. Mazda cs indicated they would contact regional personal to provide me with a response but were not optimistic about their response.remember: this failure probably common. Our brake hose ruptured at a stop light. Had it occurred roughly five minutes later, we might have risked our own lives as well as those around us.tributes are no longer manufactured by mazda. My model had at least 6 recalls and 30+ in-warranty repairs.

Email referral from center for auto safety on behalf of consumer re: nhtsa recall 12v357 / pe12-09. Referral associated an april 2011 incident with the recall and included a police accident report and two photos *tgwaccording to the narrative from the police report, the driver of the vehicle stated she was traveling north on route 35, when the brakes on the vehicle stopped working, which caused her to lose control of the vehicle at an intersection. She attempted to make a right run from route 35 onto a bridge, but the vehicle crossed all three lanes of traffic and crashed through a guardrail and landed against a tree. The vehicle then became engulfed in flames.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. During drive home from work indicator for brake problem came on. Found brake fluid level low again. Brake fluid seems to be lost through reservoir breather/ fill cap. Alot of brake fluid has accumulated on and around the master cylinder and is dripping on the exhaust(smells bad too). Found that a recall has been issued for this but mazda says my vin is not in the recall range. What should i do?
Brakes failed to stop vehicle within 200ft, started as a regular braking but only slowed, applied full force and held foot pressure. No pulsating and slowed to approximately 5 mph. Turned car right to avoid car and bumped his right back bumper with my left front bumper. Minimal damage to other vehicle. My bumper has a 3 inch rip in bumper. Road was dry but it acted like the brakes where wet, mazda recalled abs in march 2007 by nhtsa records, i did not receive a recall on this ! can you help, brake pads replaced approximately 12,000 miles ago.

November 2, 2006mazda north america operationsattn: customer assistance centerpo box 19734irvine, ca 92623-9734to whom it may concern:our service advisors tony and brian, again at el cajon mazda, did a little research and found that the only factory rotors for the mazda tribute are throw-away.other than buying aftermarket parts, which we prefer not to do, we would have this throw-away dilemma.my husband called mazda north america and spoke with todd in customer service.he took the information and immediately called us back.(i had already tried doing what my husband did, spoke with bruce, and was told to go to another mazda dealership for a second opinion, there was nothing mazda could do.)todd seemed to understand our frustration with this whole situation and called tony at el cajon mazda and authorized for our rotors to be replaced at no charge, we would be responsible for the pads and labor again.so our brakes are now replaced, but we are still feeling a little funny about the whole situation.we were told that if the pads are changed with 50% life left on them, then the rotors may be able to be turned.well, that seems pretty crazy to us to have to get new pads when they are still half there!we really want to stick with genuine mazda parts, but in the future feel that financially we may be better off just buying aftermarket so we don't have to replace the rotors every 3 years!needless to say, we are somewhat frustrated with the apparent design flaw of the braking system on our 2001 mazda tribute, and certainly hope we don't have to go through this with our 2005.hopefully this system has been improved upon.

Front disk rotors are completely worn out, although the pads are in great shape (not worn out).mileage is under 50,000 miles.
1.the first problem i had with my tribute was all the power steering fluid had leaked out, so they replaced the rack and pinion.2.the second, when going for my first brake job i'm informed that the front rotors are too thin and under specs. And need to be replaced (a $700 job) so, i went to mazda and they said the brake pads are too hard for the rotors are are unusually wearing so, they replaced my rotors. 3.the third, a week later i'm strained, because the starter stuck and burned itself out, they towed the car and replaced the starter.4.the fourth, they told me that the master cylinder had leakage so, i had to have them fix that.5.the fifth, now i am currently dealing with a sputtering or cluncking noise that occurs upon slow acceleration of 40 mph with pedal vibration and also occurs sometimes at 60 mph now. They haven't been able to figure out and fix this problem yet. But, thought they fixed the problem because they found a bushing near the engine compartment that was completely cracked so, they replaced that. Until next time.....
I was driving my 2001 mazda tribute to work on the freeway at 60 mph.traffic was slowing ahead and i applied the brakes.a second after the brakes were applied the pedal went to the floor and i lost all brake operation.i was able to avoid an accident because i was in the left lane and was able to pull over to the shoulder and downshift the vehicle until it came to a stop.if i was not in the far left or far right i would have rear ended another vehicle at speeds above 50 mph because i would not have been able to safely veer off the road.i got the vehicle repaired and the front right brake hose burst, causing a total loss of hydraulic pressure.i saved the parts if a review is required.

Was stopped at light when all of a sudden the brakes went down to the floor. Tested brakes when light changed and no brakes at all. Had just recently been driving about 50 miles per hour. Drove very slow into parking space and found out brake hose had broke.
Brake rotors keep warping.
Vehicle was going 10-15mph and stepped ongas to go 20-25mph. And rpms were sticking, and braking made it 80-85% less effective. Dealer is convinced the problem is the floor mats.
Vehicle has lost steering and brake power on hills at speeds around 30-35 mph.the only way to regain power is to cut the ignition.this is an extreme health hazard: occurrences are numerous and the dealer has been notified.
New master cylinder was installed 7/24/2001, and still having brake failure/abs light on.
Electrical system works intermittently.dealership is aware of problem. Consumer stated that the vehicle dies at 40-45 mph while driving. Also, vehicle would not start after sitting for several hours. Brakes and steering failed and it was hard to control the vehicle.
Brakes have failed on several occasions, abs light continuously on, has been back to dealer 4 times.i have only driven car for 2 days in close to 3 months of ownership. I have demanded a refund of purchase based on lemon law with no response from dealer or mazda..i do not have the mazda or even a loaner at this time. Car has now been in shop for over a month this 4th time.
While drivingan applying the brakes vehicle will stall.problem is intermittent.
Steering wheel is very hard to turn, andbrake pedal gets stuck.please provide any further information.
Brake control module failed causing wiring fire.
There is not enough space to file my whole complaint here, i will work with what i have. The recall part on my 2001 mazda tribute for the abs module was not in stock after waiting 1 hour after scheduling 2 weeks in advance the recall appointment. So my daughter had to drive away with the same faulty fire safety problem with them knowing it and us receiving the recall notice by setting appointment for the recall part to be changed. Now for the best part to this ongoing problem is the filling you in on the previous problem. This same 2001 mazda tribute's abs module recall part caught this same mazda tribute on fire around 4 years ago while parked in my parking lot for hours. If a neighbor would not have been outside and saw smoke coming out from the under the hood and called the fire dept. There is no telling how bad this could have turned out even for the safety of the apartment next to the suv. After insurance monies & out of pocket monies of over $3500 and almost a month without a vehicle in the service dept. Waiting on a part from china while the $300 payment had to be made to macdill credit union, being treated rudely and told that it was not mazda's fault or problem, too bad so sad attitude, warranty is up and there is nothing we can do for you is what i heard on top of shifting blame. Also trying to get back & forth to work for weeks because i could not afford a rental car and to make the car payment for the car i did not have (this was such a nightmare that at one point i walked from their lot to a restaurant crying to call for a ride home). And not even an acknowledgment from mazda to this previous problem and taking responsibility for it, and now i hear they don't have the same part that caught it on fire. I also now own a 2008 mazda tribute that i am making payments on and to tell you the truth, i wish that i would have known this before i purchased the new one. I'm out of room but would appreciate any help that you can give. The dealer is ferman mazda.
Vehicle stopped & could not accelerate. Dash panel lights all came on.i was going slightly downhill & also car would not brake, so had to pull the emergency brake when i managed to pull to the right/side in order to stop vehicle.
The vehiclewas onlocal road and steering andbrakes wern't responding. Was able to coast all the waydown the hill.once consumer came to a complete stop, vehicle started up.dealershipwas aware ofproblem.
When applying the brakes pads were causing the pedal to be hard when depressing. Also, rotors overheatedd intermittently.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Problems with vehicle's brake pads and rotors.*mrthe consumer was informed the front brake pads had reached the 20% point of friction material remaining and they needed to be replaced.the consumer believed the brakes and/or pads were made from inadequate materials.
Front brake rotors have worn beyond repair before the brake pads.since these rotors cannot be repaired, i assume that the brakes are unsafe.the manufacturer's service representative agreed to replace the rotors only if i purchase $500 worth of other services at the local dealership.this appears to me to be extorsion.they agree the rotors are defective, but refuse to replace them without my buying additional services (transmission and differential fluid replacement, etc.).
I have had to replace the rotors 2 times in 4 years (75,000k mi.) mazda changes the oil and rotates the tires and was not told that the pads were wearing down. I have never needed rotors replaced this frequently before.
The brake rotors wear out within 20k miles. They cannot be resurfaced even once, too thin, other tribute owners have same problem.other owners state that after market rotors last 3 times as long. (the rotors on my toyota lasted over 100k miles.)i had the mazda rotors replaced three months ago, but not the brake pad.the brake pads outlive the rotors. The brakes almost failed yesterday and today, they did not catch and the car shimmied all over the road.
At 40000 mileage my rotors were replaced when the pads had to be replaced. The dealer said this was caused by hard pads. @ 65,000 my brake booster was replaced which i camplained for 1 year abouta high pitched noise. Three weeks ago the dealer had to replace that booster with another, becasue that booster failed. Now this past week the dealership had to replace the master cylinder because it failed. My rotors at 79,000 are worn out again but mazda will not replace them this time. I feell that because the components were failing for a long time and there are other complains about this problem, mazda should have totally rebuilt the braking system instead of bandaiding it. Also the district service manager will not approve replacing the rotors because of the mileage, yet i have had these continuing problems.
On 2 seperate occassions the brake lines failed due to cracking in the brake line near the front tires.on both occassions i was going slow at the time and was able to pull over safely. If i had any speed going there for sure would have been a catastrophic crash. The brakes on both occasions failed without notice. All brake fluid hadleaked out on both occasions.
2001 tribute rack and pinion and shaft broke into pieces making it difficult for consumer to steer.the master cylinder had to be replaced due to an irreparable leak.
New master cylinder was installed 7/24/2001, and still having brake failure/abs light on.
I was constantly having problems stopping on ice/snow.it seemed that no matter how i braked my abs system would activate and the vehicle would roll through stop lights and stop signs.at first i thought it was the brand of tires that came with the tribute, so purchase a new set of goodyear snow and mud tires after only 12,000 at a cost of $300.but the problem persisted the next winter.that's when i decided to finally take it to my mechanic and was told that the master cylinder cap was cracked and that my rear brakes were not being used hardly at all.nearly all of the braking force on my vehicle was being done by the front brakes.this would explain why i was having such difficulties stopping on ice and snow.to no surprise, my front brakes had to be replaced at only 26,000 miles and it cost me $130.i did get the master cylinder cap replaced under warranty, but you might want to watch this in the future.i hope you can see how this could cause a serious accident, especially if this is a problem with the manufacturing of the vehicle.

Brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are designed too close together. Whenbrakes are applieddriver can very easily hitgas pedal as well.please give any further details.
While i was driving the car lost powersteering and power brakes, i pulled over to avoid a crash.

While attempting to make a turn while traveling 15mphsteering locked up, causingvehicle to loose control and rollover. There were no injuries and no other vehicle was involved, after the vehicle was released from the body shop, the consumer drove about 20 miles when an engine rod failed, the mechanic believes that this may have been the cause of the original accident.*nlm
Subframe rust, lower arms canot be changed.i was driving and i heard pop and couldn"t keep the car driving straight
Electrical system works intermittently.dealership is aware of problem. Consumer stated that the vehicle dies at 40-45 mph while driving. Also, vehicle would not start after sitting for several hours. Brakes and steering failed and it was hard to control the vehicle.
Put the car in reverse and could not get it out of reverse.steering totally locked up.i looked on google and this seems to be happening quite a bit and a few years have already been recalled.i was in a cvs parking lot when this happened.blocked traffic and people were not happy.
Mazda recall 7514d, cross brace kit, failed causing catastrophic loss of steering. The cross brace attachment at the frame failed. Cross brace intact, but the frame attachment was severely corroded causing frame failure and cross brace separation from the frame.the recall was completed 8/21/14. It is suspect that severe corrosion may have existed at the time that the recall was performed, but was either not detected or not addressed, leading to the ultimate frame failure.the vehicle was travelling on a city street at approximately 10-15 mph, having just started from a stop and in a right had turn, at the time of the incident she did not recognize the seriousness of the event and continued driving since the vehicle momentarily corrected the steering failure. The car reached 30-45 mph when serious steering issues were detected. The driver was barely able to get the vehicle safely stopped through full cross steering and was very shaken by this event, since 2 small children were passengers during this serious event.
While drivingsteering locked up with little prior warning. Consumer pulled over and waited which allowed steering to comeback.on april 26, 2001 began having problems starting up. Dealer has had vehicle for about a week, and has not been able to provide remedy.
When making a left turn vehicle completley loses all power steering control, cause unknown.please give any further details.
The vehiclewas onlocal road and steering andbrakes wern't responding. Was able to coast all the waydown the hill.once consumer came to a complete stop, vehicle started up.dealershipwas aware ofproblem.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that the vehicle was being examined by a private mechanic for routine maintenance. The mechanic stated that the steering wheel was very loose. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vin did not qualify for the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 00v223002 (steering:wheel and handle bar). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 131,000.
The steering wheel wandered which caused the vehicle to change lanes at high and low speeds.ph. The emission light illuminated and the problem was repaired twice. The steering problem was repaired 6 times.
While drivingthe steering wheel locked up and engine shuts off.the dealer was notified.this problem occurred intermittently and the dealer has not been able to correct the problem.*scc*nlm
Steering shut down, car die out at 45mph and car stalled.
Steering wheel will lock into one position during normal operation ofvehicle.wheel will turn toright, but cannot be turned any more toleft. Steering wheel will lock up at low speeds.so far has not happened at high speeds.this event has happened three times, dealership witnessed this defect. Dealership was trying to determinecause ofdefect.a bolt was found inside the steering rack cover and was removed.
While i was driving the car lost powersteering and power brakes, i pulled over to avoid a crash.
While driving vehicle stalls and i lose power/steering.after safely getting my car to the side of the road i am able to restart the car.the dealer has seen my car twice now and finds nothing wrong with it, and expects me to drive the defective vehicle.this stalling has happened twice now.

When consumer depressed brake pedal there was no steering power, andvehicle stalled. Dealership replacedair flow sensor. Please provide more details....
Vehicle has lost steering and brake power on hills at speeds around 30-35 mph.the only way to regain power is to cut the ignition.this is an extreme health hazard: occurrences are numerous and the dealer has been notified.
My 2001 tribute has stalled twice in the last yar.it seems to be related to hills.this life threatening situation could result in a crash because power steering fails, and there is no engine power.mazda must recall for this issue before someone is hurt.
Power steering tensioner belt broke. Dealer hasvehicle and is waiting forparts.
Consumer was traveling at approximately 45 mph on a flat/ straight and paved road when a loud noise came fromvehicle.consumer lost all power assisted steering control, butno crash occurred.dealership stated thatpower steering tensioner broke for an unknown reason.please provide any additional information/attachments.
While pulling off road, and shutting offvehicle consumer heard a loud noise. Then got out of vehicle to check what it was,a toweing truck came, andinformed driverthat three pieces of sttering linkage fell off, andit would affect steering. Vehicle was towed to dealership, and dealership toldconsumer that it was okay thatpieces fell off because they were hand made parts. Consumer still hadthree pieces thatfell off , and avidieo of the pieces.
This type of failure could very easily lead to a crash, thankfully it did not in this instance.however, my wife is somewhat anxious behind the wheel after this incident.the dealer did adjust the idler and replaced a control module, but they also acknowledged that this problem is apparently somewhat of a mystery for the manufacturer.please notify me if there is a recall or definite fix found for this problem.
Unusual squeaking noises heard from lower steering column where it connects to power steering rack at slow speeds.when going slowly over small bumps and turning steering wheel from side to side, strange noises can be heard from the steering rack including a mechanical noise.vehicle only has 29,300 miles on it and is not used off-road.mazda dealer finds we need to replace the tie rod ends and has ordered replacement parts.we will ask for the old parts when the final repair is made.
2001 tribute rack and pinion and shaft broke into pieces making it difficult for consumer to steer.the master cylinder had to be replaced due to an irreparable leak.

The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v174000 (structure). The specifics regarding the nature of the failure were not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 88,021.
Both front door handles have broke and cannot get out of car unless someone lets you out or you roll down the window and let yourself out.
Driver side inside door handle has broken off.this makes it very difficult to exit the car in a hurry.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the subframe of the vehicle was rusted and corroded, which nearly damaged the lower control arm. The vehicle was taken to jack sweeney mazda in cincinnati, oh where it was diagnosed that the entire subframe would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously repaired in 2014 per nhtsa campaign number: 14v174000 (structure). The failure mileage was 210,000.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. While the vehicle was undergoing maintenance, the independent mechanic discovered that the subframe was severely rusted and corroded. The vehicle was taken to de paula mazda (799 central ave, albany, ny 12206) who installed a reinforcement cross brace per nhtsa campaign number: 14v174000 (structure). After the repairs, the vehicle was still unsafe to drive due to the corroded subframe. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The failure mileage was 130,000.
I went in the store for a few minutes and i can out and the car would not shift into gear at all it shifted out of park and all it did was the shifter just stopped and was loose it would not ingage in another gear
The vehicle that i own has corrosion around the lift gate's rear window hinges and has completely fell off. This is very dangerous as i fear the window will completely fall off.i'm not sure if its ok for the rear lift-gate window hinge to be falling off like that.
Subframe rust, lower arms canot be changed.i was driving and i heard pop and couldn"t keep the car driving straight
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that when the vehicle was taken to be serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v174000 (structure), the technician informed that the rear bolts on the vehicle were rusted and unrepairable. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 94,015.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that the subframe of the vehicle was deteriorated. The vehicle was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v174000 (structure). Driver side door won't open from inside.
2001 mazda tribute - both interior door handles broke off completely within 2 weeks of one another. In the event of an emergency there is no way to exit without rolling down the window and reaching to the exterior handles.
My new car is currently in the garage/dealer while the service manager is trying to attain additional help to solve the problem of my vehicle not starting on a consistant basis.originally the problem started when the dealer programmed a newly purchased spare key in december.programming for the key had to be done more than once while my husband waited an additional hour and viewed the service personal push our vehicle back into the service bay.he was told there was a problem programming the new key.later in the month, the car would not start (2 incidents-6 trys).on the next trip to the dealer to have other warranty work done, i waited five and a half (5 1/2) hours overall and was informed that they could duplicate the problem with all three (3) keys.later i was told that the problem was corrected and i soon returned home.about one and a half (1 1/2) hours after the fix, the car would not start again for 15 hours (various trys).the dealer arranged a free rental car and was to have my car towed that monday morning.the keys were left in the ignition over night and the car started the next morning.i agreed to try a temporary fix suggested to the dealer by mazda tech support.three (3) weeks later, the car started having the same problems and the temporary fix did not work. What did get the car to work was the opening and closing of the driver door or unlocking and locking with keyless entry.i recorded (35 witnessed) malfunctions.the car was taken back to the dealer last monday for a new mazda tech suggested reprogramming of the keys.upon my return thursday while waiting for the twice requested written documentation about the temporary fix and the new reprogramming the running car was brought to the service entrance. When tested it went dead again. Service manager and i both witnessed.the vehicle was kept and tested for electrical shorts-none found. In conclusion my car has not started consistantly over a span of three months.
Description : driver's side outside door handle fails to work. Upon disassembly, we found that the part that connected the handle mechanism to the lock mechanism was a flimsy thin metal washer, which had broke in half. This component is definitely substandard for the constant use it gets. Upon conferring with other 2001 escape owners at escape-central.com (tech. Tips ), not only does this part fail, but the handle on the interior door eventually fails too, thus you cannot open the door from either the outside or inside.' the passenger side door also has this problem as posted by other owners. This creates the possibilty of being trapped inside during an emergency situation, such as a fire, accident, etc. These cars should be recalled and ford should fix this problem with a more substantial part.
Dt: the contact stated about eight months ago the door handle on the outside of the driver's side would not work. About four months ago the door handle on the inside of the driver's side door stopped working. Two days ago the door handle on the inside of the passenger's side door stopped working. The only way the contact could get out of the car was to reach outside the car of the passenger's side to open the door from the inside of the car. Ifthe electricalwindows of the car stopped working he would be trapped in the car.he took the car to the dealer when he first started having problems, and the dealer said it looked like a grommet, cheap plastic piece, that connected the latch to the handle was broken. Thewarranty expired, and the dealer told him there was no recall.updated 1/19/2006 -the dealer replaced the driver's inner and outer door handle and the inner door handle on the passenger's side.
Right door is defective because door is not properly bolted onto frame of vehicle.door is able to move around, and when opening door it will make noise. Also, door hinge bolt is halfway on. Contacted dealer and dealer is not willing to do anything.
2001 mazda tribute driver's interior door handle broken.can't get out of the car without putting the window down.very bad safety concern if there is an accident.
Drivers inside door handle will not open door. A critical part of the mechanism is cheap plastic. Mazda should recall this part because the problem has been reported by every tribute owner that i know and frequently appears in on-line complaint forums. I have been through two handles since owing the vehicle.
Inside drivers door handle quit working. Door has to be opened from the outside.
The driver door handle suddenly stopped working, i thought maybe because it's now considered an old car, but then just recently the same thing happened to the passenger door.i thought, hmmmm maybe i should look this up on the internet.bam!!! many complaints of the same defect and no recall!!this is a safety issue.someone could actually get killed from not being able to get out of their car.so, let's go through a scenario.i get in a car accident, the power does not work to open the windows, the car is on fire.i can't get out through driver door or passenger.so now, i am struggling to get to the back seat to open a door.but wait, that's if i don't catch on fire first.what is it going to take to get this to be a recall.will it take someone actually getting killed. Because if it does, then all these angry people who had issues that you didn't listen too will totally be on your[xxx]!do something about this!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Dt*:the contact stated the inside door handle on the driver's side sheered off. While attempting to open the door the plastic handle broke.the only way of exiting the vehicle from the driver's side is to roll down the power window and open the door from the outside.the dealer was alerted and the door handle was replaced.
Bolts have disengaged from hinge on rear left door, causing door to completely come off.
2001 mazda tribute interior driver door handle broken and will not open door from the inside.this would result in the delay of exiting the vehicle in the event of crash which could result in death if in a river or lake.
The driver's side door handle was replaced twice in order to gain entry.the window had to be lowered.the door handle onthe passenger side was defective.*sc
The inside driver's side door handle to my 2001 mazda tribute snapped making it impossible for the driver to exit the vehicle without rolling down the window.i have found that this is a very frequent occurrence, in fact, the replacement part is on a nationwide backorder due to the extent of the poor design.my mechanic said that the order will not arrive until sometime between 2 weeks and 6 months.he is not sure.
2001 mazda tribute - drivers side door handle does not work and finding many people with the same problem on the internet. The car only has 76,000 miles.
Dt:the contact stated approximately two weeks ago the inside door handle on the driver side stopped working.he had to roll down the window and use the outside handle to get out.the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic, and he found the door handle assembly needed to be replaced.the part is on back order at this time.

The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact mentioned while driving at various speeds, the front passenger side of the vehicle would shake violently. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the sub-frame was rusted and separating from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer.

I have had the truck for 3 years and 113,000 miles highway miles, no off-roading.the front wheel bearings went out and were replaced under warranty at 43000 miles. The front wheel bearings are out again along with the stabilizer link and ti-rods. The wheels felt like they we about to fall off if you happened to hit a bump in the road. I just purchased a new set of tires a month ago and they are nowpossibly ruined due to the wheel bearing failure. I have had two cars with over 200k miles and never replaced the wheel bearings.it is currently at the mazda dealer with an $800 repair bill.
After taking the vehicle in for it's first tire change the rear end could not be aligned due to the rear cam bolts being frozen. Repairs require the replacement of the entire trailing arms on both sides. Costs for repair exceed $700.00

On october 12, 2001, i was traveling north on interstate 95 through north carolina in my mazada tribute 2001.this was a sunny day so the road was dry and i was traveling 70 mph with cruise control.i was approaching the exits for the rocky mount area when my entire car started shaking furiously.then the whole left side of my car seemed to suddenly drop.i immeadiately pulled over.when i got out of the car to take a look, i noticed that it was not just a flat, but that the entire tread had seperated from the sidewalls.i took the tire into a firestone dealer where they proceeded to tell me that tires always respond this way when they go flat and charged me for a new tire.they did not seem concerned at all.after they had finished replacing the tire, i asked for the original tire which they told me was already destroyed and that i could not have it back.this was a wilderness ht p235/70r16 but when firestone replaced it they used a wilderness ht ii. I have firestone wilderness ht p235/70r16 104t m+s tires which came with my 2001 mazda tribute suv upon purchase in november of 2000.recently, with 30,000 miles on the vehicle, i noticed a crack running along the side circumference of all four tires.the crack runs on the side of the tread where i believe the tread is bonded to the tire. I am concerned that the p235 / 70r16 model has not been identified under your consumer advisory of 1 september, 2002 or in any recall and may be a safety hazard.i have digital photos clearly showing the cracking which i have sent to your web master email.i can resend them at your request.nlm
There were 2 separate tire defects that after goin from1 mazda dealer to 1 firestone dealer back to a second mazda dealer then finally had the problem tire replaced fee of charge by a second firestone dealer. The defective tire first dropped a 2inch by 2inch section of tread right off of the tire. It was located on the inside tread section and only in one spot. While i waited for the replacement tire to be ordered and received and guaranteed by the firestone dealer(2210 w ridge rd rochester ny 14626)that the tire was safe to drive on and no other problems should arise the tire began to rip along a seam on the sidewall directly opposite from the missing section of tread. This obviously could of lead to a tire failure or worse. The dealer appologized and quickly replaced the tire with a similiar tire except the new one has white outlined letters as per firestone dealer originals don't and they are only avalable from the mazda/ford factory???? Flying debris (sand, gravel, stones etc.) from front tires do fly at several speeds towards the body of the vehicle and damage the cladding seriously. Furthermore because of this design the bigger objects can fly further into incoming and passing traffic and damage and endanger life and property. To avoid this usually the car manufacuturer installs or offers to install mud flaps or splash guards to the vehicles. Unfortunately there are hundreds of reports that the mazda tribute does not offer this safety advise and does not make it available to mazda tribute owners. Damage on the cars is ignored, but proof exists that mazda is well aware of this problem but does not do anything for these vehicles on the market. But mazda confirms that the design will be changed from the 2004 model on, but they do not know if that far away improvement will be comaptible to the tributes now on the market. Approached almost every after market producer of mud flaps everyone is unable to supplyfront mud flaps for this vehicle. Even warnings take place n o tto use other mudflaps as they have to be installed on the fiberglass cladding and that can produce flying fiberglass parts off the vehicle from torn cladding. There is not solution on the market and the safety is besides the damage on the brandnew vehicles a big concern. Mazda offered myself to install mudflaps from the brother model ford escape but after trying to install those ones stopped this attempt after admitting that they do not fit! lots of unsatisfied and worried tribute customers waiting for a solution which was declined with e-mail from mazda as they do not care about the damage and safety in this regard.
While traveling on a clean, smooth highway at about 60 mph with one driver and unloaded, rear passenger side tire experienced blow out in middle of sidewall.the tire was shown to a local dealer for warranty replacement.the dealer initially refused to replace the tire, claimed that the problem was caused by a road hazard, that tires don't just explode.the dealer ultimately replaced the tire but did not admit to any tire defect.
Engine check light came on, and consumer smelled fuel inside vehicle. Dealer informed her that fuel tank was leaking.but that fuel tanks were on back order. Could not give her a time frame, but assured her vehicle was safe to drive.

The vehicle that i own has corrosion around the lift gate's rear window hinges and has completely fell off. This is very dangerous as i fear the window will completely fall off.i'm not sure if its ok for the rear lift-gate window hinge to be falling off like that.

For the past five years, i have repeatedly requested a copy of the revised owner's manual for my vehicle from mazda and from three mazda dealerships. Starting in january, 2012, mazda claimed to no longer have any copies available and refused to provided me with so much as even a pdf copy. The change in the manual wording pertained to child seat belt restraints. Here is the pertinent recall information: mazda recall #: 99011, nhtsa recall #: 00v323000. Recall date: 12/15/00.recall description: owners manual correction.repair description: dealers will provide revised owner manuals, free of charge. Recall repair status: incomplete.nhtsa recall number: 00v323000. Recall date: october 13, 2000.manufacturer recall number: 99011. Summary: tribute owner's manual. Also, the manuals do not explain the markings in the vehicle that locate the lower anchorages. My tribute has started to accelerate by itself. It scares me anymore to drive it. When i start it sometimes the pedal goes straight down by itself and reverse up the motor and just the other day i was slowly backing out of a parking space and when i put my foot on the brake the accelerator pedal went to the floor and jerk me back fast i was lucky i had my foot on the brake. I just pushed the brake to the floor and it stopped . This is happening alot lately and getting worst. My car should not accelerate by itself. Now after reading that there are alot of tribute owners having the same problem i am really scared to drive mine.
Picked up my mazda from having new brakes installed to take boat out on memorial weekend. Luckily i was towing my boat as the drag slowed me from going any faster as i approached the on ramp to interstate i-69 and my acceleration wasn't under my control.i was told at the time from firestone that it was caused by the poor design and location of the cruise control cable.i have learned this week that there is a petition 49 cfr part 552;557 on this matter.i am bothered that steps were not taken to notify current owners of this problem, and that this incident could have endangered my life.i consider myself lucky of the circumstances that i mentioned and i wasn't yet on the interstate when this occurred!!this could have been addressed within the recall time frame of my aging, but still reliable tribby!
Just started noticing that when i let my foot off the gas, the car does not "naturally" de-celerate/slow down, it keeps going! have to press the brake to slow down from anywhere from 30-45 mph. I see there was a recall august 2000, this was before car was purchased in november 2000 by my boyfriend, who later gave me the car in 2009, how would we have known such a defect existed prior to purchase? what is the dealer/manufacturers obligation to fix it before it was sold to an individual? haven't taken the car to dealer yet, but we plan to. This is a highly unsafe condition. I do not feel i should have to bear the expense to have it repaired.

The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph and braking for a traffic stop, the vehicle accelerated with a rapid increase in engine rpms. After repeated attempts, the vehicle came to a stop. The contact would experience the failure sporadically and without warning. The vehicle was recently repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 12v357000 (engine and engine cooling, speed control). The malfunction happened after the recall remedy repair was performed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 199,900.
Consumer states the cause for the second engine stalling was a mass air flow sensor failure and it was replaced. The third engine failure was caused by throttle body and was replaced. The third replacement was done on 09/23/02 and the mileage was 19247
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle accelerated without warning. The brake pedal was applied and traveled to the floorboard. The contact crashed the vehicle into a snow bank in order to stop. A police report was not filed and there where no injuries reported. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the throttle was stuck and that the speed control servo needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 00v210002 (vehicle speed control). The failure mileage was 161,000.
While driving at expressway speed and without warning vehicle shut off. Consumer stated the throttle body was cleaned but not replaced.
The throttle will stick open. It happens typically in the winter when it's really cold but lately, it has been happening when it's warm out. In order for me to get control of the vehicle i have to quickly shift it into neutral and power off the vehicle and coast to a stop. If i do not shut the power off the motor races and sounds like it is going to blow up.
Moved from center turn lane into eastbound lane of rush hour traffic at 5:30pm.suddenly noticed the car was speeding.took foot off accelerator but car continued to accelerate.managed to pull into a right turn lane into a gas station while standing on brake to no effect.as i swerved into the gas station, i put the car in neutral and turned engine off.car stopped about 10 feet away from gas pumps.turned engine on and it raced.shortly after that the accelerator pedal dropped to the floor and no longer worked.this car was taken in to rick case mazda, duluth, ga on 10/10/12 for the 2012 mazda recall due to cruise control and supposedly "fixed" using part #1 f01-10-218 stud.service station who repaired my car following the 9/10/143 incident said the cruise control cable had once again caused the sudden acceleration and removed and replaced the cruise control cable.i am constantly worried now that the car will do it again.
The consumer put the gear shift in the drive gear.when the driver tapped the accelerator pedal the vehicleaccelerated in full throttle.*nlm
After starting my 2001 mazda tribute recently, the engine revved to 4000rpm.this happened more than once.drove to mechanic and he indicated that the throttle cable was sticking.this presents a serious safety issue.went online to look at recalls.found out that 121,000 tributes made between 2002-2004 have nhsta recalls for sticking throttle control cables.mazda north america indicated my vehicle was not included in a recall campaign for the throttle cable based on the vin.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign id number: 00v210002 (vehicle speed control) and took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs. The contact stated that the cruise control light no longer illuminated when activated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be replicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 148,260 and the current mileage was 148,293.
I was shopping at the local walmart with my wife, who was driving the vehicle. We were parked in the walmart parking lot.on leaving, she engaged the car in drive and began to ease out of the parking space.the car suddenly surged forward and she was unable to stop it even though she was applying the brakes very hard.this had happened to me several times before but always in a place that was safe and where i could bring the car to a stop.it always happened as i was moving from a parked position.on this occasion, it was not safe, and we crashed into another car.the tribute was damaged at a cost of $5,000 to repair.the other car also had extensive damages.i asked the dealer who repaired the car to examine the cruise control and accelerator pedal for a defect. He only told me that it looked "normal".my wife is afraid to drive this car now and i have a lot of apprehension when i first start the car and begin to drive.i think that there must be a subtle defect in either the cruise control or the accelerator that causes this unexpected surge when first starting from a parked position.
When consumer depressed brake pedal there was no steering power, andvehicle stalled. Dealership replacedair flow sensor. Please provide more details....
May 23, 2002 - cruise control stopped working.light on console comes on but doesn't engage.june 01, 2002 - lost all power while going approx 35 mph around a slight curve.pulled to the side, put in neutral and started again.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph the accelerator pedal was abnormally depressed into the floorboard and became stuck, causing the vehicle to accelerate rapidly.the contact had to shift into neutral in order to stop the vehicle. The contact discovered the throttle cable had become lodged between the engine motor plate. The contact pulled the plate off and corrected the failure.the failure mileage was 103,000 and the current mileage was 150,000. Updated 09/05/12*ljupdated 09/05/12
In the past 30 days i have had 5 incidents where upon exiting from the highway the rpms on my 2001 mazda tribute failed to come down to idle speed when i was trying to stop.this caused the vehicle to pull and i had to apply the breaks hard.i tried putting the vehicle into neutral and when i did the vehicle's rpms increased to over 4000.i was able to pull over and shut the vehicle off.it takes about 20 minutes of the vehicle being off before i am able to restart and resume normal operation.i have taken the vehicle into the dealership but they were unable to find anything wrong when they ran their diagnostics an they were unable to recreate the problem.i contacted mazda after seeing a description of a similar problem in nhtsa campaign id: 00v210002, but was told that there was no recall and they refused to acknowledge that there were any investigations or recalls for the 2001 tributes.
I was at a red light making a right turn. The light turned green i proceeded to drive the vehicle speed went from 25 mph to 40 mph and breaks failed. I was able to stop the vehicle and then put it in park. The engine was still racing and i shut the car off waited about 5 min turned the car on engine was still racing and then all went back to normal including the breaks.
2001 mazda tribute v6. Pulled out pushed the gas pedal to the floor got up to speed of about 35-40 let off the gas and the car was still at wide open throttle put the car in neutral applied brakes which didn't help because brakes do not work then the engine is revving, also slammed on the gas pedal a few times hoping to un-jam the throttle cable. I knew it wasn't a stuck pedal because the pedal returned. Turned the key back one notch to only kill the engine and still allow me to steer hoping to get a little better braking also pulled up slowly on the handbrake at this time to help me stop and pulled over. Tried to start the car again and it was still at wide open throttle so with the engine off i popped the hood and while trying to reach the throttle linkage i lifted the engine cover and the throttle slammed shut so i had my girlfriend push the throttle to the floor to verify that it did infact get caught on the engine cover so i moved it out of the way and drove home making sure to not go wide open throttle i then removed the engine cover when i got home and the car has been able to go wide open throttle ever since with no incidents.i do not know what speed i reached before it was over but had there been traffic sitting at the next intersection i would have ran into them or had to ditch it.
During braking when speed became slower than 10 m/h engine rpm go to0 which is leading to turning enging off. Happened 2 times with me. Not sure if it is ignition system or transmissionto restart a car you need to switch gear to parking and turn key all the way back. I do beleive this could cause a crash on intersection.
2001 tribute was in cruise control cresting a hill when traffic slowed, i applied the brakes but soon realized that not only was the car still in cruise, but that the engine was beginning to race and i was having to brake hard.i was able to get to the shoulder and placed the car into neutral whereupon the engine revved so high that it shut itself down.i had it towed to my mechanic who was unable to find anything wrong with the car.i feared the worst but some system shut the engine down before it self-destructed.
The contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute.while idling at a red light, the vehicle accelerated and increased to 4 rpm's on its own.the vehicle would not return to idle.the vehicle had to be turned off and was towed to the dealer.the dealer currently has the vehicle and it has not been diagnosed.nhtsa campaign id number 00v210002 (vehicle speed control) was referenced.the current mileage was 112,781 and failure mileage was 112,779.

Consumer depressed accelerator pedal and vehicle hesitated, and then suddenly lurched forward, almost causing a collision.related investigation ea 02-027.
On sunday 12/21/08, while driving my 2001 mazda tribute on local freeway at approximately 55 mph,in close to 0 degree fahrenheit weather, i experienced stuck throttle.gas pedal and the portion of associated linkage visible from passenger compartment were not obstructed in any way.all efforts to return engine to idle speed, including rapidly depressing gas pedal to near the floor and then rapidly releasing it, were unsuccessful.throttle was stuck at 4000 rpm. Had to put transmission into neutral and then coast to a stop on an offramp. Once stopped, i turned off and then restarted engine several times.at restart, engine would immediately race up to and stay at 4000 rpm, even though i did not even touch the gas pedal.wound up having to get vehicle towed to a mazda dealer repair facility, which was closed at the time due to it being sunday. The dealership representative told me that, upon restarting the vehicle the next day, the throttle was no longer stuck.said the linkage "probably froze up" due to the previous day's cold weather but had "thawed out". He recommended lubricating it, which i authorized.on 1/1/09, i dropped the vehicle at a different mazda repair facility because of an unrelated problem.the dealer representative told me that, when he drove the vehicle into the garage from outside (where it had sat overnight in near zero weather), the throttle stuck. The throttle stuck a few times last winter in 10 degree or below weather but only momentarily.i noted today, according to your website, that there was a recall on 2001mazda tributes equipped with "speed control" because of a defect that caused throttles to stick.i am not sure what "speed control" is.my tribute, which i purchased used, does not have "cruise control."whether it originally had "cruise control", which may have been removed by someone prior to my purchase, i do not know.
The gas pedal is the issue that i have with my 2001 mazda tribute you can hardly push the gas pedal and it accelerates very hard. It is very non safe.what can be done. This should be a recall on this problem.
Occassionally, while my car is idleboth parked but running or while i'm in traffic, the engine accelerates and the rpm gauge races.the engine will not stop racing unless i turn the car off.also, driver car door does not open from the inside, service dealer says i need to replace entire lock including components not covered under map.
The accelerator pedalstuck on two separate occasions. This occurred while accelerating from a stop position. As a result, excessive force had to be applied to the pedal which resulted in rapid acceleration.both failures were due to the throttle body.*mr
Vehicle stalled, and after pressing the accelerator it stopped.dealer repaired the vehicleat consumer's expense. Manufacturer stated thatthe continued cost was consumer's responsibility.
While driving about 50 mph and when stepping onaccelerator pedal, vehicle will not accelerate. Also, transmission only will work in reverse.the transmission failure was the cause for no forward movement of the vehicle and was replaced.
When slowing down to enter highway, and thenpressing accelerater andvehicle slows down, instead of speeding up.it is like your putting on the brakes.driver feels this can cause an accident. Please provide any further information.
Vehicle was going 10-15mph and stepped ongas to go 20-25mph. And rpms were sticking, and braking made it 80-85% less effective. Dealer is convinced the problem is the floor mats.

2001 mazda tribute. Consumer states brake failure while driving, causing a crash and vehicle fire *tgwrecall # 12v357000 was referenced.
The consumer noticed that the gas pedal on his 2001 mazda tribute has become harder to depress and the engine jumps when the vehicle accelerates. The consumer wants to know if recall 04v574000 applies to his vehicle, becausea recall was issued on the 2003 ford escape and ford also made the mazda tribute. *sc
While driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. In addition, the cruise control failed. The contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. The vehicle was restarted, but failed to drive. The vehicle was taken to the residence where the contact was staying. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 211,000.
Driver accelerated, with pedal, while cruise control was set at 70 mph.removing foot from accelerator pedal and applying the brake did not seem to disengage the cruise; "the engine seemed to surge".the cruise control off button also seemed to have no effect on the cruise.the resistance in the brake pedal increased and engine continued to surge as the vehicle speed was decreased to around 50 mph.driver shifted into neutral; the engine rpm shot up.driver then shifted into progressively lower gears and applied the brake until vehicle stopped.driver then shifted into park, and shut off the engine.smoke was coming out of the engine compartment.vehicle was towed and determined to have a blown engine.owner alleges that mazda dealer (flow mazda in fayetteville) stated that there is recall campaign (00v-210 002) for this issue, but that her vehicle is not covered due to her vehicle's build date.per relevant 573, the effected build date range is ford's kcap 4/17/00 through 7/24/00; subject vehicle build date is unknown.vin range is [xxx] through [xxx].owner's vin is [xxx].owner alleges to never have received an owner notification for this recall.updated 07/16/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
While going 35-40mph down long hillengine quit. Steering and brakes failed. Consumer doesn't remember ifdashboard lights illuminated.vehicle coasted down hill while standing on the brakes to stop.
Except for the initial ignition each day, every time the vehicle is started a waft of gasoline fumes comes through the air vents, then dissipates after 5-10 seconds. An odor of gasoline can be detected sometimes when the vehicle is idling, and a distinct gasoline odor is evident on the outside of the vehicle also, mostly on the passenger side front.can be detected
A fuel odor is present through vents in interior on a warm re-start
Stale fuel odor coming into passenger complartment through ac/heating vents after a warm engine restart.also noticed when stopped with engine running.air temperature selector must also be in the "blue area" where more outside air is circulated vs. Heated air.
Vehicle did not come with electronic power mirrors even though there were wires forthem. Manual stated thatit should have them. Apparently, manufacturer forgot to put electronic power mirrorsin the first 5,000 vehicles. Please provide further information.
Passenger side interior door handle will not open door. Window must be run down & outside handle used to open.this has been reported to dealer who will repair @ my costapprox. A year ago the door could not be opened at all manually or electronically from the outside only from inside it was repaired by dealer my cost $149.00.part number ectt-58-412c.
Power windows/sunroof quit working after 1-1 1/2 hrs. Of driving. Dealer has replaced a switch and the general module with no success. Returning to dealer for more "digging" into the problem.
Front wipers became inoperative in miduse during rain/snow.apparent linkage between wiper motor and wipers broke.this is the second tribute my dealer has had to repair for this problem.
Windshield wipers were on during a rain shower, andpassenger's wiper started to wipe out of sync, and itbrokedriver's sidewiper. Consumer pulled vehicle over to the side of the road, the wipers were then turned off and then turned back on, the driver side wiper moved, but had torn rubber and a bent tip, passenger side did not wipe, vehicle was driven slowly to dealership and wipers were replaced in 2 days.
The driver side mirror shakes so badly that the image in the mirror is so blurred you can not see anything.i took it back to the dealer, they replaced the mirror and it still did the samething.i complained a second time and they said there was nothing they could do since they already replaced it once.the second problem is that there is a lot of wind noise and a howling noise when driving on the freeway at 50 + mph.it gets so loud that it give me a headache.i told the dealer 3 times about this already.they changed out the window seals out 2 times and this has not solved the problem.what can be done to resolve these 2 defects? thanks.
The exterior driver side mirror vibrates to the point that the reflection is blurry and distorted at speeds of 50 mphor higher.the mirror has been replaced by the dealership but i still have the same problem.this condition is dangerious in bad weather and needs to be fixed.the dealership has offered no help in fixing this problem nor has support in california.
The driver's side mirror vibrates at speeds of 30 mph and above.the vibration is excessive enough on the freeway that images reflected are completely distorted and blurry which disallows proper visualization of traffic and other vehicles.the vibration is also so bothersome that i refrain from looking in the mirror anymore which i view to be a serious safety issue.according to the dealership and car manufacturer, the problem is a characteristic of the vehicle, including all models of mazda tributes, that cannot be corrected.i find that to be unacceaptable!
Outside mirror on driver side will vibrate at speeds over 50 on the highways.in bad weather or at night it is hard to tell who and what is coming up the side of the car. This is dangerous condition as it is.mazda replaced the mirror once and it is still just as bad.
Power windows/sunroof quit working after 1-1 1/2 hrs. Of driving. Dealer has replaced a switch and the general module with no success. Returning to dealer for more "digging" into the problem.
Windshield wiper assembly - nominally repaired in 2001 recall - failed completely & without warning.small plastic connector came apart.wipers were operating, but load was only water - no ice or snow.as close to a serious accident as i would care to come based on a mechanical failure.talked to mazda, but they would not address failure history of item.they have replaced assembly (again), but no indication this one will work any better!
Windshield wipers stopped working during heavy rain while driving on a 70 mph highway. The failure happened long after the windshield wiper linkage recall was performed.

Manufacturer'srecall 0200l for windshield wiper becoming disengaged. Vehicle inspected on 26 dec 2000, component found in working order. On 27 jan 2001, while driving 40 mph in rain, windshield wiper stopped working. Dealer found windshield wiper linkage had broken.the manufacture blamed the dealer for failing to inspect the vehicle properly during the recall repair.
The windshield wiper system failed on an inclement day, there was a recall on the drive assembly but the consumer was never notified (00v-387), after being repaired the wipers failed again while driving in heavy rain.nlm
Windshield wipers were on during a rain shower, andpassenger's wiper started to wipe out of sync, and itbrokedriver's sidewiper.
