2003 mazda protege 5 was traveling approximately 45mph and struck a moving vehicle in the rear quarter panel. No air bag was deployed in the mazda protege 5. The other vehicle's airbags deployed.
My son was involved in an auto accident and none of the front or side air bags went off.though he or the other driver was not seriously injured my concern was why didnt the air bags go off?everyonei have spoke to about this felt there may of been some defect in this car because of all the damage involved my son was pulling out of a side road onto the main highway he never saw the driver and hit the car onthe passenger side my sons car was totaled.he just purchased the car brand new in april 2003 he had less than 15,000 miles on the car the transmission was busted as well as many other parts i spoke to senator corman regarding this issue and he said to file a complaint i also spoke to mazda regarding this however they said they werent aloud to investigate it that we would have to do this ourselves the insurance adjuster also commented on the air bags not going off i have pictures of the wrecked car and my son has the police report if youneed any other information please call or email me down below i listed 4 failures that was all the air bags as for anyother information about this i have the insurance copy of the damage any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated
I was taking a corner on hwy 36 and hit gravel on the side of the road.the car went off the road did a nose dive into a ditch flip forward end over end, slid and rolled twice. Non of the air bags deployed. Neither driver or passenger.i am not positive but my car should have had side curtain air bags but they did not deploy either.
Failure of front and side air bags to deploy.
2003 mazda protege would not pass 2019 virginia safety inspection due to defective passenger side airbag.dealer cannot replace because mazda has discontinued that part.under virginia law, car cannot be operated without valid inspection certificate.inspection disclosed no other disqualifying conditions.
Drivers frontal impact at 45 mph airbags did not deploy. My car 2003 mazda protege 5 was totaled. Now i am having neck and back pain when i use my car. I called mazda they told me to usemy insurance com. To investgate the airbags and get with madza.
I was involved in a head-on collision in my 2003 mazda protege5 while traveling approximately 10-20mph.the other party was traveling approximately 20-25mph.upon impact, the seat belt pretensioner didn't work (i was wearing my seat belt) and none of the airbags infated.the damage to the car was mainly structural, estimates to fix the car were approximately $13,000-$14,000, subsequently the car was 'totaled'.to describe the structural damage, the frame was bent, the right fender and structural parts underneath were buckled at the windshield, and quite a few engine components destroyed as well as all of the 'cosmetic' parts on the front of the car.the damage was classified by the reporting police department as "major".in this accident, i received a patella (kneecap) fracture that is severe enough to keep me off work for approximately five weeks.physical therapy will continue for a total of approximately 6-8 weeks.medical bills will be approximately $8000 or more.on march 19, 2004, i visited the mazda dealership i purchased the car from on january 4, 2004 (the car had only 1204 miles on it at time of accident).i inquired from the available service technician where the airbag sensor was located.it was explained to me that "there's a box that sits close to the dash, in front of the radio/cd changer.in this box is a cup with a little ball in it.around the cup are the sensors that, if the cup and ball are jarred enough in a collision, will set off the airbags."i have been asked by my insurance company (esurance), by the other party's insurance company (aaa), and the collision center (1st class collision) why the airbags didn't go off.i see the other two complaints regarding this same equipment failure and am wondering when there will be something done - does someone have to be seriously injured or killed before an investigation is started?this airbag sensor system obviously seems to be an inadequate feature of this model of mazda.
Air bag light illuminated while driving. Vehicle had been to the dealer on three separate occasions. On each occasion, within three weeks or less , the air bag light illuminated while driving.
I have a 2003 mazda protege.when i purchased the car, i paid extra for a side airbags and anti-lock brake package.on monday, december 20th of 2004, i was broad sided by a 1990 huge chevy work pick up.i was going 40 mph, i estimate the truck at the same.my side airbags failed to deploy.if i had not seen the truck coming and offset the angle of impact, my brother and i would most likely be in the hospital right now.when i contacted mazda consumer affairs, i was told that they were not guaranteed to deploy and ?made a note in my file they failed to deploy.?at no point during the buying process was i told they were not guaranteed.when talking to mazda?s consumer affairs, i was also told they would not look into the failure unless my insurance company came after them.
Failure of side air bag to deploy.on date indicated the right side of my 2003 mazda protege5 struck a metal utility pole with sufficient force to cause the vehicle to be a total loss, yet the side curtain air bag did not deploy.this was a direct and not glancing blow the main force of which struck immediately over the right rear wheel.interestingly enough, when notified, the mazda usa customer service representative stated that the insurance company (usaa) should initiate any required action.yet, the insurance company claims they are not "involved" if the air bag did not contribute to the cause of the accident.is no one but me concerned that there may be a defective side air bag system design or that a defective unit may have been installed in my car?
When driving at any speed vehiclesunexpectedly died.dealerdetermined that computer needed reprogramming.two months later the engine died again.the vehicle was taken in for second time where they service dealer could not find the problem.on one occasion the powertrain control module was reprogrammed due to the vehicle stalling. *sc
2003 mazda protege. Consumer states electrical problems with vehicle and several other concerns *tgwthe consumer stated the lights stayed on and the alarm would sound intermittently.the dealer replaced the electrical module.the consumer also stated the engine overheated due to a water pump leak and leaking radiator, the battery was replaced several times, the vehicle was out of alignment, and the consumer had to purchase three sets of tires.
While my son was driving to work on a hill curve turn he lost control on icy wet road and hit a tree he died on 01/29/2013 he was 18 years old he was going to school and working.
I recently purchased a '03 mazda protege5. While driving down the road yesterday at 65 mph, i heard a loud bang and heard something hit the bottom of the car. The car exhaust suddenly became much louder. I immediately pulled off the road. I looked under the car, and the exhaust had come apart. The piece of the exhaust after the cat was hanging about 1 inch from the ground. This piece is after the catalytic converter, near one of the hanging points of the exhaust system. Two bolts, which hold this piece together, and the exhaust gasket were missing. Luckily, there was no damage whatsoever. This problem could have ended tragically.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where it was stated that the intake manifold needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 114,000.
On at least 3-5 occasions this 2.0l engine has suffered the exact same fate as nhtsa id# 10422484.check engine light on, misfiring, associated noise sounding like a bolt / screw bouncing around in the engine for maybe 15 seconds, then would return to normal. Each time there has been a different cylinder misfire, upon spark plug removal it was found the gap was closed causing no spark. Each time, a new plug was installed and corrected the immediate problem.after seeing these complaints and a recall regarding this issue i realized i've had the same issue.don't know if my vin # is in the effected range or not.car now has 123105 miles.would hope that mazda would cover any vehicle with this problem.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege. The contact stated while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine and timing belt needed to be replaced. The engine was taken apart and the mechanic found a screw inside of the intake valve. The vehicle was not repaired. An unknown dealer was contacted and informed of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 188,000.
Rough idle causing to stall while driving, check engine light on for cylinder misfire, found cylinder 4 with a bent spark plug with the gap closed. Replaced all 4 plugs car ran fine for a few months only to have the same issue cylinder misfire with cylinder 4 with another bent plug gap closed. Possible something loose inside cylinder 4 causing the misfire issues to the plug. Mileage 130,280
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege. The contact attempted to start the vehicle but the engine failed to start accompanied by an abnormal knocking from the engine. The contact also mentioned that the failure occurred more often when the engine was cold. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 13,200.
Intermittently while driving at any speedvehiclestalled.this problemoccurred six times since december of 2003.dealer examined the vehicle, and could not find what the problem was.
The tightening torque of the screws used for mounting the intake manifold shutter valve loosened and fell out (1 into the spark plugs and caused damage to plugs and coils).caused misfiring, affecting the exhaust emissions. There was a recall in 2006 but not for my car's vin - but my car had the exact problem from that recall. Waiting to see if mazda will honor this recall and pay for repairs/parts.
The vehicle stalled on a continuous basis.the dealer was not able toduplicate the problem.there was also a noise in the front of the vehicle when the accelerator was applied.*sc
My 03 protege has vics screws falling out and all issues that comes with it. My car has been parked in the driveway untouched because i cannot afford to pay for the repairs due to how many times my car has had issues and cannot pass emissions. So i have to turn my tags in within the month because mazda wont recognize the issue being their recall since my vin is out of their window for cars being defective. I don't understand why if so many people are having the same problem; why those months when we have the same parts? mazda claims its the torque but obviously its the screws falling out including the butterflies. Why was the torque different those 3 months? if mazda is saying the recall is due to the torque being wrong and the screws are falling out then why are so many vehicles that are in and out of the vin number needed to be required for free repair? why are so many vehicles being checked and mechanics finding screws and butterflies in other areas other than where they should be? if the recall is due to torque, then why are you replacing the original screws? if torque is the case why not just use the correct torque usage, you know the torque that's in my car! why are proteges with the vins out of the recall window having the same corrective action when they go to get the repair and getthe same parts when they had the correct torque in the first place! its clear this recall isn't about torque, this is about it the recall part being faulty no matter what torque was used.wouldn't it have been more cost effective and easier for you just to use the required torque rather than new parts since you say. Mazda doesn't take this seriously and fix their faulty part. We need help!
The contact owns a 2003 mazda speed protege.while driving 20 mph, the vehicle began to shake severely when the contact released the accelerator pedal.he experienced difficulty steering and controlling the vehicle.he took the vehicle to a dealer and was informed that the variable tumble control system shutter valve became stuck in the closed position.the failure prevented air from entering the vehicle.through online research, he discovered a recall for the same failure on the regular mazda protege.the manufacturer stated that the mazda speed protege had no recalls.the failure mileage was 72,000 and current mileage was 75,000.
Engine has a very bad hesitation during exceleration, both from a standing and roilling start. Hesitation is bad enough to cause vehicle control problems durring the winter when driving on snow or during rainy conditions. Engine has already had the pcm module reprogramed as per outstanding service bulletin this fixed the engine missing under same circumstance but does not correct the hesitation. Dealer has looked at the vehicle 2 times and cannot find or fix the problem.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protg.the contact stated that the check engine light illuminated.the mechanic checked the codes and stated that the engine misfired.the current mileage was 84,000 and failure mileage was 80,000.
There's a knocking sound coming from the engine when started in the morning.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege 5. While idling the engine, it misfired and two of the cylinders did not make a connection. An authorized technicianremoved a screw from the cylinder within the engine at his own expense. The technician also stated that the intake manifold was losing screws and affecting the cylinders. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The current mileage was 83,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 79,000.
2003 mazda protege 5 stalled when trying to accelarate from a stop light.this has happened twice already.both times i was able to restart the car without problems.the dealer can't duplicate problem, and can't figure out what is causing the the problem.
The car suffered a failure of the intake manifold whereby the screws inside the intake had come loose and caused damage to the engine.it is unclear at this time if my car is covered under the current recall 3005 c.
My engine failed causing a sudden loss of power. I was able to pull over safely.my car required about $1,000 worth of repairs, using used parts, and i have permanent engine damage that will ultimately shorten the life of my engine.the root cause of the engine failure was due to loose screws located in the air intake manifold, that allowed for a baffle or butterfly valve to break and enter my engine.this very same problem was recalled by mazda for vehicles made from march of 2003 to july of 2003, mine was manufactured in february of 2003, and therefore was not recalled. I know of at least three other people who also have experienced this very same issue who have not been included in the recall.i have had two separate mazda service managers confirm this was the same problem as the recall - loose screws in air intake manifold.i need this investigated to determine if more cars should be recalled.

When the vehicle was started a knocking noise was heard.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and was unable to determine the problem.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibits a no-start condition. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician concluded that the failure was caused by screws that have fallen from the butterfly shutters inside of the intake manifold and that the repairs would cost $1000.00. No repairs were made. The manufacturer was notified; however, no assistance was provided. The failure and current mileages were 107,000.
Car stalled at red light, there was a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. After stalling t more times the car ran for another 3 minutes to ge me home for the evening. I then to it to my local mazda service center.
While approaching a stop sign, the engine stalled causing thebrakes and power steering not to work. I was unable to stop at the stop sign and ran into the embankment on the other side. This car has had a history of engine stalling while running. *la
While driving on highway at about 60 mph for 40 minutes, the car began sputtering, jerking, making noises, losing acceleration and the check engine light came on. It initially felt like someone was taking their foot on and off the gas.we pulled off road and were towed to our garage.mechanic found that the spark plug for cylinder 4 was smashed shut, he replaced it and told us to take it to the dealer since this was the 3rd time we had this problem. In dec of 2009 the spark plug forcylinder 1 had same problem then again in feb 2010 it was the plugs for 1 & 4. Each time we were driving at 55 mph or higherwhen car began to sputter then check engine light came on. Mazda is telling us nothing is in the engine, the compression is fine and they have no idea why spark plugs are getting smashed.the first time it happened our mechanic thought it wasbad spark plug and replaced it free of charge, the second time we took it to the dealer who could find nothing. It is now at the dealer again and they are saying the only thing they could do is take the engine apart and look but have no guarantee of finding anything and it could cost $1500.they removed spark plug, checked for debris and tested the compression. They also used a magnet to search for foreign body in cylinder and found nothing.
Vehicle went backwards even after consumer put the gear into park.*mrwhen the consumer got back in the car after leaving it running she noticed the engine oil pressure light was on, but thought nothing of it. The consumer was unable to stop the vehicle until it came to rest on its own after rolling in a ditch. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.
For over two and a half yrs, my car has had a rough idling noise and the engine often hesitates and wants to turn off. On several occasions the engine has hesitated and shut the car off. Very recently a loud noise was coming from my engine.(you could hear a rattling noise) it sounded like a piece of metal rattling around in the engine. A year ago i took my car into the dealership because of a recall (recall 3005c) to get it checked out (this is what the letter from mazda asked me to do)my car was there only two hours and only looked at maybe about thirty minutes.i received an oil change and then they were to inspect it due to the recall. When i retrieved my car they gave me a certificate of correction, but informed me that nothing had been fixed and that they were only authorized to inspect.that if the part broke that i would be responsible for it even though it was a recall.here i am one year later and i had my car looked at and it appears that two of the screws must have come loose due to the recall.(they were found in my exhaust)i got no help from the dealer. I found the recall instructions online from mazda to the dealer which instructs the dealer to replace the parts if they have not been replaced on any previous occasion (which was procedure b).and if it has been previously worked on they are to proceed with procedure a which instructs them to do an air compression inspection for internal damage and give a certificate of correction.they did the wrong procedure on my car and never actually did what needed to be replaced for my car to be legal and ok to drive.they are now avoiding my calls and not returning numerous e-mails or voice mails. I have been trying the dealer and mazda themselves. On tues .i received nothing but rude mocking from each place telling me that it was my problem.i have been trying everyday since and i have received no response.updated 2/23/2007 - intake manifold shutter and variable tumble control valves.
I purchased vehicle new in jan 04.while exiting the freeway, i felt a "hiccup" in the engine at which time it ran very poorly and check engine light came.the serpentine belt had also jumped about 25% off drive pulleys.i was traveling out of town at this time and took it to a local service station.technician identified problem as an engine misfire and installed a new belt.i decided not to have service station perform any additional diagnosis preferring take vehicle to dealership instead.dealership determined that a spark plug had failed and came apart.dealership then replaced all spark plugs.vehicle ran fine.appx 1 month later, exact symptoms occurred - engine hiccup, rough idle, check engine light.again i took to dealership.master tech was assigned to my vehicle this time and determined cause to be shutter valve screws had come loose from the intake manifold and entered engine causing damage to spark plug.technician informed me of recall # 3005c that had been issued and that he would contact his regional service manager to request the repair be covered by mazda.regional svc mgr declined to cover costs stating my specific vin was not in the effected range and that my mileage was too high.i looked up the recall and determined the recall issue date to be 6/1/05.at that time my mileage would have been 40,000 to 50,000 miles.i then contacted mazda usa customer assistance - reference number 112751060.i was told that mazda would not cover the expense because my vin # was not in the range of effected vehicles. I was also told that vin range was determined by the nhtsa and not by mazda and that it was illegal for mazda to pay for the repair expense.i believe this to be a lie on the part of mazda.i believe mazda is not accepting its' responsibility to the consumer because this would be admitting the problem is larger than the original scope and will cost the company a substantial amount of money.
My 2002 protege 5 (built december 2002) had a catastrophic engine failure, due to loose vics screws from the intake manifold coming loose and being sucked into the combustion chamber.these screws sheared off the top of my spark plug, and destroyed my piston and valves.the outward symptoms was a loud 'coin in the washing machine' sound coming from my engine, followed by a sudden loss of power and stalling.after the engine was opened, 3 of 8 vics screws were off completely, and the remaining 5 were loose.this is clearly the identical defect to a recall for protege 5's built shortly after my vehicle (emissions recall 3005c), but my vehicle was not covered in the recall.reading online boards for protege owners, it is clear that this is a frequent defect effecting both owners in and out of recall range, and that this vics recall should be widened to include additional owners.quotes from mazda for repair are ~$5000 for a new intake manifold, valves and pistons, and labor to repair.
The contact's son owns a 2003 mazda protege 5.while approaching a red light at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled and had to be restarted.the contact heard loud noises coming from the front end of the vehicle.the contact pulled to the side of the road and had the vehicle towed to a service station.the mechanic diagnosed the cause of the failure as a blown rod.the vehicle was then towed to a mazda dealer, who stated that there was engine failure and it needed to be replaced.the current mileage was 31,289 and failure mileage was 26,490.
Loud rattling noise at highway speed, engine light came on.took to mazda dealership, found problem to be butterfly valve screws backing out and falling into intake manifold.estimated repair cost ~$900.00.
My son bought a 2003 mazda protege 5, back in late july 2010. Shortly thereafter, on august 3rd, 2010 in fact, he knowing of an open recall, had the car serviced at the local mazda dealership. Apparently they performed part a of recall 3005c and did a compression check and slapped a "recall completed" sticker under the hood.come late august, my son takes the car away to school. On november 1st, 2010, he calls complaining of a "'loud engine noise". 2 days later, we had the car towed to a nearby performance shop. They investigated and noticed the recall 3005c sticker under the hood. Knowing this, the performance shop recommended we take the car to the local mazda dealership nearby my sons' school. This second dealership verified with a borescope that there was damage in cylinders 1 and 3. After much disagreement, this second mazda dealership eventually opened the intake manifold and found 7 of the 8 screws and all 4 butterfly valves laying in the bottom of the intake. The second dealership then replaced the intake manifold but upon starting the engine found that the engine noise still exists. Now they claim the engine noise is due to "engine bearing failure" and not related to the 3005c recall. After forcing the issue with mazda they claimed no further assistance can be offered. I was then forced to tow the car back to the performance shop. There they removed the cylinder head and found the missing screw embedded in the top of cylinder #2. Bearing failure has not been verified by anyone yet. I maintain that the screw being embedded in cylinder #2 plus other metal filings related to the 3005c recall, must have caused the alleged "bearing failure". Mazda claims the so called "bearing failure" must have existed previously. Apparently, they think i was driving the car around with the bearing problem. Looks like legal action will be the next step. All of this could have been avoided had the first mazda dealership replaced the intake manifold in the first place.
One of the butterfly valves on the intake manifold fell off completely.this happened when the last of the two screws holding it on came loose and fell-off and was sucked into the engine.when the part was dismantled, there were only five of the original eight screws remaining.only one of the four valves was completely connected when the unit was opened.i was driving normally down road and luckily this happened as i was parking my car.the event happened on 7/22/05 and the mazda dealership stated that although they have seen this occur before, there is no tsb or recall.i will need to replace this part of the manifold at a cost of more that $1000 dollars.on a mazda enthusist website that i frequent, at least ten other members have had the same problem with results varying from complete engine replacement, to the same supposed fix as i need.that information can be found at "www.protege5.com"the information is available in numerous places if you search there for "engine noise."
Engine rattles when accelerating after starting in the morning, and periodically rattles when accelerating after stopping when warmed up.
While driving normally to my home after work the car stalled at a stop light.)when restarted there was a loud clanking/hammering noise from the engine for about 15 seconds then the sound went away, the cell lit up and the engine started shaking.when checked for codes a misfire on cylinder -4 was found.(the spark plug on cylinder 4 had been smashed flat by a foreign object that caused the hammering noise, nothing was found inside the cylinder , using a magnet.the spark plug was replaced and the car worked as normal.upon investigation on the internet i found recall 3005c for the vehicle that describes my problem and if not fixed can cause engine failure.when contacting mazda customer assistance they said my vin was not in range for this recall and that i would have to pay for any repairs because my car has 61000 miles and even though the emissions warranty is still active, the regular warranty is over.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege 5. The contact stated that when driving approximately 45 mph, he noticed a loud rumbling sound coming from the engine motor. He turned off the vehicle and pulled over. The vehicle was towed to a dealership and the dealer replaced the intake manifold shutter because the valve broke off and fell into the engine. He called the manufacturer and was told that they could not assist him.he had no problems with his vehicle since the repair. The current mileage was approximately 214,000. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 30mph, there was a rattling noise from the engine compartment followed by the engine stalling.the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop for inspection.the mechanic determined the screws used for mounting the intake manifold shutter valve broke and fell into the catalytic converter as well as the oil pan and pistons.the vehicle is scheduled for replacement of those screws.there is an emission recall, #3005c, regarding the exhaust system.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.
Purchased a pre owned 2003 mazda protege with approximately 50,000 miles on it. I drove the vehicle for about 4000 miles before there was an engine failure. There were no events that lead up to this incident. The engine began to make a loud knocking noise. I had it towed to the dealer of purchase. A screw on an the intake came loose and went into the engine cylinder. Damage caused the engine to need to be replaced. Mazda hasrecall 3005cfor this problemfor the exact year, model, and engine as the one i purchased.however, the vin number was a few thousand numbers outside of the recall range.im stuck with a 15,000 piece of junk.
While driving to work my car began to shudder and hiccup. Then the engine light cam on so i pulled off the highway. I started it back up and the car had a more serious shudder. I got it to a local service station and they ran a computer diagnostic and said it was a misfire in the #4 cylinder. The sparkplug was smashed. Nothing was found in the cylinderso the sparkplug was replaced and temporarily fixed the problem. Two weeks later the same shudder problem and again the engine light came on. This time the #1 cylinder was the problem and again with the same smashed sparkplug. My mechanic thought it was a very odd occurrence and checked and found the recall #3005c. My local mazda dealer then said my vin# did not fall within the range of the recall and yet there seems to be many people with this problem. It looks like mazda is trying to avoid this problem.
Dt*: the contact stated the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle began hesitating.the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, who determined the computer gave a code stating a misfire in the first cylinder.the spark plug was taken off and the gap was closed.the air intake manifold was then taken off and the screw had come off, this closed the gap on the spark plug.the intake manifold was being replaced.
2003 mazda protege 5 with rough idling and other engine issues. Consumer states the vehicle had a rough idle and that it would have trouble starting.when the mechanic inspected the engine, he found the screws had passed through the engine and were found in the catalytic converter. The consumer discovered there was an intake manifold shutter and variable tumble control valve emission recall for mazda protege's, however the consumers vehicle identification number did not fall within the range.
The stereo unit on the mazda speed protege is very defective. This unit is manufactured by kenwood. The stereo suffers from multiple intermitent failures and problems. The most noticable are as follows: volume dims and surges after the stereo is on when using the defroster on the vehicle. Sub-woofer blows out under normal usage, pronounced whine with the acceleration of the vehicle when listening to the radio, random lock up of the stereo face plate requiring using the system reset button to get it to operate normally again. The car has been into the dealer 3 times for these issues and except for the blown sub-woofer reports no problem found. The sub-woofer has been on order for 2 months with no expected delivery date.
Flat tire caused me to use jack that came with my car, after placing it correctly under my car and lifting car the jack then bentand sent my car crashing down on its rotor nearly landing on my arm. I still have the jack and i contacted the mazda company to replace the jack. They are sending gift certificate and looking into the matter.
The low beam halogen bulb (headlight) on the passenger side of my mazda recently burned out.>first complaint--because of a cramped engine compartment, the bulb is difficult to replace.i have smallish hands for a man.there was barely room to access the bulb socket (holder) on the outside corner of the headlight "pod".>second complaint--the bulb holder was complex.the bulb plugs into an "internal" socket; this pair slides into the headlight "pod"; the pair is then held in place by a wire clip; everything thus far gets covered by a rubber gasket; and lastly, there's an "external" connection (plug).>third complaint--the headlight "pod" is a intrinsically lousy design.even in broad daylight, i couldn't see the catch-point for the wire clip.>fourth complaint--the "pod" itself is frail.it's apparently plastic.the plastic apparently ages badly.my gentle attempt to refasten the wire clip broke something on the back of the "pod"--i don't know what.so i was forced to replace the "pod" assembly at a cost of over $400.>note--i'd previously replaced three headlight bulbs on this car; and though successful, i was frustrated with the process each time.>there oughta be a law!>an owner should be able to replace any safety-related light bulb on the outside of their vehicle with 1) no prior experience mechanically, eg, a teen barbie-bimbo; 2) only modest hand dexterity, eg, an old fart with arthritis; 3) no tool more complex than a commonplace screwdriver; and 4) without an owner's manual, eg, an older used car.>the goal here is to empower an owner to keep their vehicle in safest condition.i request that the usdot issue and enforce suitable standards for the manufacture of "family" vehicles.>it's too '!@#$% late to help me.i doubt whether i'll ever buy another mazda.
Mazda headlight harness - the lights are constantly going out (during the past 4 years). I went to replace the bulb years ago and it came back on as i wiggled the harness to pull the bulb out.over 80 times since then i've had to smack the headlight to get it to come back on.this happens predominantly when the temperature is below 0 celsius (freezing). This has occurred on my 2001 mazda mpv (which i got rid of this year) and my 2003 mazda protege which i still have.once it happened on my protege i knew it wasn't an mpv situation, it must be a mazda problem and likely relates to the supplier that makes the harness for the headlights.many times my wife and i have been 'flashed' by other drivers for not having lights on.
-the contact stated that while drivingon 12/27/06 at 35 mph, hadhigh beam head lights on ,and he tried to toggle the high beam to low beam and allthe lights turned off.the contact stated that he played withthetoggle switch and the lights came back on seconds later. The contacttookthe vehicle to dealership on 12/29/06.the mechanic looked at vehicle, and told the contact they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. The contact hasn't had this problem since, but did find a recall#06e038000.updated 03/07/07.
Year 2003mazda protege lx, gas tank leaking to the trunk.
I have had two occurrences of screws from the butterfly valves on the vtcs system from the intake of my 2003 mazda protege 5 coming loose and being sucked into the combustion chamber of the vehicle.each instance has caused the piston to knock the screw into the spark plug, thereby causing failure of a spark plug, which causes the engine to misfire to the point where it is undrivable, thereby leaving me stranded on the side of the road.the first incident was misdiagnosed (spark plug replaced).the second was diagnosed correctly and the intake manifold assembly was replaced.this is a widespread problem with the 2.0l fs-ze mazda engine.many other owners have had the problem.for more information to demonstrate the prevalence of the problem, please visit http://www.msprotege.com and search using the keywords "vcts" and "screw".you will see many threads where people are discussing this problem.
I own a 2003 mazda protege 5, and i have automatic/remote key unlocks doors. One day it just stop working, i had to start to manually lock and unlock my driver side door. It would not be much of a bother had it be another door, but just the main one i use broke. I went to the dealer but they wanted $250 to fix it, saying it needs a new car door actuator. Not 2 months past, and the back door on the passenger side broke too, a door i hardly used. It was a cheap plastic part with in the actuator that broke for no good reason. There should be a recall on this. I have yet to come up with $500 to fix both doors.
Although the vehicle's emergency brake was engaged the vehicle rolled down a hill. Consumer put 2 month old child in the car seat and proceeded to get in the vehicle when it started to roll. The consumer was able to get someones attention to get the baby out of the vehicle.while the door was open it hit a parked vehicle causing one of the hinges on the door to break and dented the door quite a bit.consumer was injured while trying to get the vehicle to stop.the consumer was told that the problem was normal wear and tear of the emergency brake.
Emergency brake fails on inclines--this happened to me and a woman with the same make, model and year car sitting next to me at an insurance hearing!it caused significant damage to both our cars and her friend's property.
When engaging seat belt into locking mechanism, the mechanism broke into about seven pieces.it will no longer hold the seat belt.
My transmission completely failed at 18,000 miles and one month shy of being a year old.a new transmission was installed.i had my car back for one week and the new transmission would down shift for no reason as i was doing 70 mph down the interstate.after replacing the computer, throttle position sensor, throttle range sensor, and the engine wiring harness, mazda has now decided to replace the new transmission.this will be the third transmission in a year old car.
Overdrive light flashed on and off, and check engine light stayed on. Transmission shifted hard.dealer discovered four solenoids defective because they were steel plated.manufacturer stated consumerwill have to repair at his own cost.the consumer stated that 4 soleroids inside the transmission are going bad.steel plates in transmission show thermal damage.rear door locks not functioning and making a shorting sound. *tc
Under low acceleration between 1st and 2nd and between 2nd and 3rd gears there is a very low frequency noise that sounds like it is generated by a vibration.this has happened since the car was purchased new.i have had it in twice for repair to no avail and the dealer refuses to keep the car overnight to investigate the issue further.
Leaking gear oil fluid at the linkage coupling.*la
Clutch apparently failed to engage transmission after being driven 15 miles to work with no apparent symptoms that it was going to fail.vehicle has previously had a motor mount break that was covered under the terms of the warranty.i believe the motor mount failure caused a misalignment of the drive train which resulted in the premature failure of the clutch.mazda has refused to cover the clutch as a warranty repair even though they did the motor mount repair.at the time the motor mount failed the motor or transmission was making an awful racket.the clutch sounded like it was under an awful strain!
2003 mazda protege (manual transmission); have trouble going into reverse and sometimes into first gear; also, unable to take key out of ignition; driver window feels like it is rolling off track when rolled down.problems with vehicle first began some time in march 2005.
The 2003-2003.5 mazdaspeed protege poorly designed limited-slip differential has seen a failure rate of over 125 documented cases online.when this part fails, the vehicle does not respond to acceleration causing a safety issue at highway speeds and residential speeds.when this part fails, it could cause the vehicle and passengers to be at risk for roadside rear end crashes due to loss of power especially if the driver is changing lanes at highway speed.this issue has been a widespread problem for this particular model and mazda usa has denied any responsibility for issuing a recall.2003-2003.5 mazdaspeed protege owners have had the limited slip differential replaced only to find the issue re-appear and fail again.here is a link to the documented list of owners who have had this fail.(http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64821&page=29).some failures have even been dangerous.i would ask that the nhtsa look deeply into this situation before someone gets hurt or worse.thank you for your time.
On the 2003 and 2003.5 mazda mazdaspeed protege, of which only 4750 cars were produced.there have been at least 46 web documented failures of the differential breaking on these cars.the 47th known failure was recently my nephew.see link for a list of failures.http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64821&highlight=lsd+failurethis is a major saftey issue if this decides break while pulling out in front of a semi or anything else.as an ownerof one of these cars, something needs to be done to solve this issue, before myself or anyone else is hurt or killed.

My daughter drove my mazda protege 5 to pick up my son and to retrieve something from a friend's house.she parked the car on the friend's flat driveway, placing it in first gear.while she was inside of the house, the car somehow popped out of gear and picked up enough momentum to roll onto the road.the road was a hill, which caused the car to accelerate.the car ended up striking a house, causing damage to both the house and the shrubbery outside of the house.nobody could find any apparent problems with the car/transmission.
I was involved in an auto accident while driving an '03 mazda protege5.upon impact my seat belt failed.
Front driver seat belt suddenly was incapable of being buckled. Drivers seat belt could not click in receptacle and was not usable. Dealer said it was not covered b/c it was out of warranty and i was responsible for repair which was about $100.
When engaging seat belt into locking mechanism, the mechanism broke into about seven pieces.it will no longer hold the seat belt.
The front driver side seat belt receptacle (female) on my 2003 mazda protege5 will not latch, the vehicle has 147,000 miles on it now and is no longer under warranty.
I was pulling up to my residence when the seat belt popped out of the receiver by itself.. I tried to re-latch the seat belt and it would not latch. I attempted a few more times and the seat belt receiver completely fell apart..
While my son was driving to work on a hill curve turn he lost control on icy wet road and hit a tree he died on 01/29/2013 he was 18 years old he was going to school and working.
2003 mazda protege lx driver side seatbelt locking clip internal parts shattered after 50,000 miles. Out of warranty now but i have read other websites of people with the exact same problem. Why has a recall not been offered for this highly dangerous seatbelt?
1.december 17, 2009:the seat belt light was on when all seat belts were fastened.2.january 6, 2010:the drivers seat belt mechanism no longer latches.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege. The contact stated that the front driver side seat belt buckle completely fractured when attempting to latch. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the seat belt buckle assembly was replaced. The contact planned to notify the manufacturer regarding the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 151,000.
Seatbelt broke when i tried to put it on.inside the female adapter several plastic pieces were broken and floating around rendering my seatbelt useless.i had to plug in my seatbelt to the passenger side.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege.the contact stated that the rear passenger and driver's side seat belt became jammed in the lock mechanism.the buckle mechanism would not release the seat belt harness strap.the contact is waiting to have the vehicle repaired.the failure and current mileages were less than 70,300.
The seat belt no longer buckles.initially the buckle would go into the receptacle but not latch unless you pressed real hard and jiggled it around.after about a week, it stopped working all together.the buckle goes into the receptacle but does not latch.
The driver side seat belt latch is no longer working. There appears to be broken parts in the female part.
The driver's side seat belt began to stick within the second year of ownership. Currently, it will latch, but during driving, it will unlatch and the seatbelt light will come on. It fluctuates between sticking to the point of having to pull quite violently to unlatch it, or not latching at all.
The driver seat belt will no longer work. The male end will not connect to the female end. I looked with a flashlight and there were broken pieces inside. It looks like the buckle came apart. I now have to use the passenger side seat belt buckle.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege 5. Whenever the contact attempted to use the driver side front seat belt she noticed that the seat belt buckle would not connect with the base latch.the contact noticed that prior to the failure the latch became very difficult close. The latch mechanism was replaced by a local mechanic. The current and failure mileages were 89500. Updated 01/05/10. *ljupdated 01/05/10.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protege.the contact stated that the driver side seat belt would not latch and the seat belt warning indicator light illuminated.the dealer advised the contact not to worry about the light as long as the belt would latch.however, the belt no longer latches.the dealer stated that the latch needed to be replaced.the current and failure mileages were 93,000.
When engaging seat belt into locking mechanism, the mechanism broke into about seven pieces.it will no longer hold the seat belt.
When our vehicle was struck from behind the driver seat collapsed backward. I was mildly injured and if my 1 year old daughter was in the driver's side of the rear seat instead of the passenger side, i would have crushed and likely killed her. I am not overweight and was struck while stopped by a van at relatively low speed.
I am 6'0" with a tempermental back and a 30" pant inseam.in practical terms, i must have the seat cushion at its lowest position (for headroom); the seat back vertical (to prevent backache); and the seat moved relatively forward (to reach the pedals).my 2003 mazda protege 5 is one of the few cars i can drive comfortably.that's high praise for such a modest car.>>>>>my problem with the protege is the lever for the fore/aft movement of the driver's seat.the lever is below the front edge of the seat cushion (instead of along the left side); it is shaped roughly like a capital letter "l" laid horizontally; the inside angle is about 120 degrees (so that the long side points forward toward the accelerator); and the lever tip is "pointy".>>>>>if i wear "long" pants with bottom cuffs, the cuffs are prone to catch on the seat lever as i get out of the car.believe me, it's not easy to stop 235 pounds when i've been thrown off balance.i've repeatedly gotten bruised and/or scraped hands during ungraceful landings.>>>>>the front passenger seat is similar.these levers are a safety hazard.i believe that the 2003 protege (and any other recent vehicle using this design) should be recalled for replacement of the seat levers.>>>>>a replacement lever should be shaped so that its tip tucks far enough under the seat cushion (a couple of inches) to prevent it from catching a pant cuff or purse strap.for an example of the job done right, please see the 2004 mazda 626.>>>>>this is an ongoing problem.your stupid web site design insists on a specificmonth/day/year for the incident date.i have entered my date of purchase instead.
While driving head rest adjusted on its own. This caused the head rest not to adjust properly to height of the head.consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for analysis, and mechanic couldnotresolve theproblem.
The contact owns a 2003 mazda protg. The contact stated that while attempting a left turn at 10 mph, the vehicle began sliding abnormally. The contact applied the brakes in order to shift gears but the vehicle would not stop. The contact then attempted to engage the emergency brake but to no avail and crashed into a curb. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis. The dealer advised that the brake sensor would need replacing. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was repaired. The vin was not available.the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 98,000.

The consumer was unable to stop the vehicle until it came to rest on its own after rolling in a ditch. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.
I believe that the 2003 mazda protoge5 brake design is flawed and dangerous (5-speed manual).i have addressed this issue with my dealer (capital mazda, cary, nc) and they refuse to help.there is excessive brake pedal travel, so much so that i can nearly push the pedal to the floor.the dealer says this is normal operation.i have experienced several occasions that when braking, have actually pressed the accelerator pedal as well, causing the engine to race.on at least one occasion, the car lurched forward upon releasing the brake, due to the accelerator pedal being pressed as well as the brake pedal.this is a fundamental design flaw it seems and one that needs immediate action from mazda.this is a condition that will likely lead to traffic accidents.
While driving a flat tire. Changed the flat, and proceeded to drive. Upon coming to a stop sign and depressing the brakes vehicle continued through the stop sign. This happened on two occasions. The abs kicked in, making a bumming noise. However, the vehiclelost power. Took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that it may be the abs.
Premature rear brake wear, both sides.both rear rotors (and their pads, of course) had to be replaced at 20,240 miles.i was charged $378.45 for repair.internet discussion groups report this problem due to caliper slides sticking.some dealers perform this repair free; mine refused.
While making a turn, the steering wheel felt loose, the consumer loss control of vehicle which jumped the curb and hit a pole.*mr no one was injured, but the consumer would like for mazda to correct all of the 2,000 mazda speed protege vehicles before serious injury occurs. *ph
Passenger side strut tower has rusted to the point that failure of the suspension is imminent.the rust inhibitor that was applied from mazda motor corp. During manufacturing, on the passenger front wheel well has failed and is allowing water, road salt etc to enter the engine bay and cause severe rusting on the top and side portion of the strut tower where the side motor mount and strut tower brace attach to the strut tower.the failure of the rust inhibitor has now caused the failure of the steel strut tower which in-turn could cause the engine and/or front passenger side suspension to become dislodged and cause a severe accident.pictures can be provided upon request.

Mazdas peed protege suffers from excess torque steer and very unstable steering at speeds over 30 mile per hour. If you excellerate hard the vehicle will jump left or right depending on speed. Also when travelling at highway speed vehicle will swerve left or right without warning or for any noticable reason also at highway speed the vehicle tends to drift in its lane. Dealer service states that this is normal for a high performance vehicle and nothing is wrong. I have owned many high performance automobiles and have never seen this before. This condition has almost resulted in accidents on many occasions and only radical steering has prevented an accident so far.
I bought the car from a smaller cheap dealership, i had no idea that the front end would be as bad as it got. My lower control arm / ball joint was so corroded every time i made a left turn it would make a loud noise in the left front wheel then would continue to happen over and over each time. This would happen often when it was dry and warm and sat for awhile. Living in buffalo, well you can not help but hit potholes in some places more than others. This would make the problem worse and throw my steering off while travel at a high rate of speed. If i was doing the curves on route 33 or route 290 i would have to slow done to maintain steering ability. I have recently been told it was so bad i could lose my wheel and crash. So i went to a local repair shop and they fixed the problem; but with a slightly new problem one of the screws were so corroded they charged me $100.00 to make an access panel from my drivers side floor panel under myfeet. Thetotal for just those parts came to $350.00 plus wheel alignment.

Severe rusting of left and right rear quarter panels leading into rear of rocker panels due to poor rust protection from factory.
Structure: small rust spots located on all exterior surfaces.

Passenger side inner fender where the strut is mounted is getting rusted badly making the car unsafe to drive. Car runs fine but i can push with the finger from the wheel side and see the body move. If car goes over a pot hole it might make the strut fall off and cause a major accident. This is structure issue. I cant replace anything. Mazda should buy it back just like nissan did on their pathfinder.

The front suspension on the 2003.5 mazdaspeed protege has a very bad noise which you can hear when passing over speed bumps or any small bump in the road. The noise sounds like a soda can being crushed. The noise is more pronouced in wet or cold conditions. Noise has been present in the vehicle since 2nd month of ownership. Dealer has vehicle in for this problem 2 times and indicates they cannot reproduce it. Various online forums indicate this is not a unkown issue and has affect many (if not all) owner of this model.

I would like to make you aware of a problem with mazda protg's.i am not the only one with this problem, which is a safety issue.there are brackets on top of the strut tower that are not coated or coated properly to prevent rusting.the rust on my car and may others is seen covering the top of the strut tower.as you know there is a lot of pressure at this point on vehicles.if the rust advances enough ' the strut and wheel can and will come up through the hood.the result will be a vehicle losing control and crashing into whatever is around.mazda is unresponsive to this issue.could you please investigate this issue as many people can be hurt or killed by this.i have pictures of my car if you'd like to see them (unable to submit through this site) and a link to an automotive web site with additional pictures and comments.http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/piston-slap-mazda-protege5-in-god-we-rust/.

When the vehicle hit the ground both airbags deployed.the driver was injured as a result. The police filed a report; however, the contact feels that some of the information is incorrect. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and was told that the failure was caused by hitting something in the road; the contact disagreed.the dealer will not cover the repair under the warranty.
