Recently purchased a 2002 mazda protege5. Without warning, it wouldn't start. The low beam headlight burned out. The heat, stereo, headlights & power windows all worked. The car had no power and didn't even turn over. About 15 mins later, it started fine and never had a problem again until a few days ago (approx a month in between incidents).same thing all over again, but this time the car refuses to start.what can i do? what info should i be aware of? i discovered online that this is an extremely common problem.

If my mazda protege 5 is not driven for 2-3 days, the battery is dead the next time i try to start it.it has been tomazda dealerships on at least 6 occassions.i have had the car jumped on 3 other occassions.they have replaced the battery 3 times, replaced varioues fuses, and finally decided that the factory stereo system was draining the battery while the car was not running.the most recent occurrence was 7/25, although this has happened at least 9 other times since last june.

The car began to shutter and dropped from 50 to 25 in seconds.the check engine light (cil) starting flashing and the car began to stutter like it was going to die, i pulled to the side of the road and the car died. Started car again the cil continued to flash, it only would accelerate to 25 miles an hours even with my foot all the way down on the gas.i took it to the a mechanic and the codes were p0421, 171, 300.the mechanic did everything from engine flush, spark plugs, oil, air filters and installed a new catalytic converter but the problem persists.its now a year later and the car is doing the exact same thing.

My car stalled while i was driving (actually in motion). I slowly came to a stop and tried to restart car but was unsuccessful.i sat on the side of a very narrow road for several hours waiting for a tow truck to tow me to the dealership.the dealership informed me that my battery was completely dead and that i needed a new one.my car barely had 20k miles on it at that point.i informed the dealership that i couldn't understand how the battery could just die while the car was in motion but they insisted that was the problem.approximately a year and a half later the same exact problem occurred.i had it jump started to test the battery.we disconnected the plus cable from the battery while the car was on and it remained on but as soon as i turned my lights on it died.we were not able to jump start the car again after that.the next day my fiance went out to take a look at the car and it started right up.he brought it to a mechanic and they ran several tests over the engine but found no problems.

I have a 2002 mazda protege.were the upper passenger side motor mount attaches to the car body, the car body metal is severely rusted and starting to separate on the inside of the engine compartment.i did take the car to a mazda body shop and they quoted me in the area of $1,000.00 to fix the issue.i do not feel it is my responsibility to pay for the fix as this is an area high in the engine compartment not subject to the elements.basically mazda has some problem with the metal, the anti corrosion treatment or the finish treatment to the metal.this is in a protected area and if properly made should never rust.needless to say, a good solid motor mount is a critical item.i first noticed this problem about june 1st 2010.

I have been working on this car for maybe 2 years and the last few months it has been misfiring on cylinder 3. It seems that many other people have had this problem but cant seem to figure it out. I have replaced everything that had to do with electrical and now i think it might be something to do with the fuel injectors.also the seat belt would stay locked for about 10 minutes or so.

Consumer states engine makes a rattling noise when started.noise is also heard when accelerating after vehicle has come to a complete stop.vehicle has been checked by dealer who advised a "valve" in the engine is causing noise and that mazda engineers are investigating to find a solution.consumer is very concerned that issue could compromise her safety when driving vehicle.ts

Mechanical engine rattles at 2800 rpms when cold. Dealer confirms problem, but cannot fix. Mazda confirms problem but claims to not have a solution. Problem is evident on a least 50% of protege sedans and wagons produced for 2002.

Engine rattle when cold at about 2500rpms. Mazda has not repaired or indicated that problem exists.

Air conditioning has been getting less and less cool. Took vehicle to dealer and they indicated the evaporator was leaking and part would cost 561.12 out of warranty.2 months prior the condenser went out and replaced under warranty.

Consumer states that he was wondering why he was getting such poor gas mileage.he then took his vehicle to his private mechanic since he lives about 65-70 from the nearest mazda dealer.he thinks that this is a defect, because he also thinks that it is because of some mis-wiring. Air compressor runs when it is not turned on. Overdrive button is inopperable.*tc

Gas streaming from leaking gas tank from 2002 mazda protege5. Second incident, first occurred one day after initial delivery on nov 2, 2001.

Fuel is leaking from the top of the fuel tank/sender unit into the back seat of my mazda protege5. Given an ignition source, this is a fire hazard. This failure resulted in a recall in the mazda6, 2003 model year. Mazda refuses to fix under warranty in my vehicle. Cost to repair is over $900. I am looking for a used replacement tank. I feel mazda should replace the tank under warranty because it is a safety hazard and a known problem.

The contact owns a 2002 mazda protege 5.the contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline coming from her vehicle.she took the vehicle to a local repair shop and was informed that the retaining bracket in the fuel tank was corroded.the corrosion punctured holes in the sending unit and caused fuel leakage.the contact is in the process of having the vehicle repaired.she filed a complaint with the manufacturer.the failure and current mileages were 62,502 updated 08/04/09.*ljupdated 08/06/09.

2002 mazda protege i bought new. Now about 64,000 miles. Never been wrecked. In 09/07 i started to smell gas. My mechanic said it was a defective gas tank. Since the defect was most likely a problem w/ the manufacturing of the vehicle, it was suggested i get in touch with the dealer & mazda to let them know & discuss possible solutions. I spoke with a rep at the dealership twice & he was extremely disrespectful. He did not offer to help in any manner & showed no concern for my safety or the safety of the car.he refused to even look at it. He repeatedly told me it was too old. I requested that a mazda rep look at the vehicle to which he said he would call them. He called me back saying that he spoke with mazda & they too said they would do nothing. I spoke with mazda twice on the phone. Again they offered no help nor any concern for my safety or the safety of the vehicle. She stated that there were no recalls, no lemon law, and that the vehicle was simply too old to do anything. Again, i requested that a rep please look at the vehicle & again they refused saything there was nothing they could do. I am currently scheduled to get the gas tank, fuel pump, etc. Replaced later this week as the vehicle is unsafe to drive.i have done regular maintenance since i bought the vehicle (i.e. Tune ups, oil changes, brakes, tires, etc.). Through no fault of my own, i am now responsible for replacing the gas tank. I am extremely upset with mazda & their lack of concern, their awful customer service, and their general disregard for my safety & the safety of the vehicle. It is my belief that the problem with the gas tank is a manufacturer's defect & that they should have taken some responsibility and/or own up to it and at least have a qualified mazda professional look at the car to provide an explanation. I will never purchase a mazda again. I want to make others aware of how mazda treated me & that there could be a real safety concern with the manufacturing of their vehicles.

1. Normal use of the vehicle.2. The left front seat inside door handle (driver's side) broke off 1/28/09. Only way out is to craw over center console and exit passenger side.3. The left rear seat inside door handle broke off 8/22/09. Child had to exit the opposite side of the car.4. Google (no quotes) "protege broke door handle" and see others with this defect.

The hydraulic arm broke and snapped off at the metal ball joint suddenly slamming the hatch door on my 2002 mazda protege 5 closed.fortunately, my son and i had just stepped back from the rear of the vehicle when this happened.had either one of us still been retrieving items from the back of the car, i believe we would have been seriously injured.

Consumer concerned about the noise that the vehicles transmission made.he stated that the noise was so loud that it gave him and anyone that rode with him a headache. He also says that the dealer does not know how to stop the noise. He stated he was having a problem with trying to get it fixed since there was no recall.*nlmthe consumer stated that the noise is mostly noticeable at the speed of 45 mph and higher.the mazda repair information stated that thewhine noise is a result of a resonance the is generated at varying levels between the primary and secondary gears and does not affect the use, safety or value of the vehicle.scc

Transmission was slipping at higher gears on sat. (03/20). Would race to high rpm's as though looking for another gear.husband took to service this morning.problem became worse as he drove to dealership. Would "thunk" into gear, would race to high rpm's at 35-45 mph.when arrived at dealership, they checked and confirmed that the transmission has failed.car was bought new and only has 34,000 miles on it.

When driving at any speed especailly high, vehicle lets off a very high pitch noise. Noise isvery destracting while driving and consumer has gotten headaches as a result.

Transmission locked up while trying to shift to 5th gear, vehicle stalled while going through an intersection near a quarry, had to pull the emergency brake to stop vehicle, almost went into a ditch.

We purchased a new 2002 mazda protege lx in 08/2002.within days we were having problems with the transmission.sometimes just hesitation in acceleration and shifting.frequent failure to shift at all or failure to shift for prolonged intervals (sometimes miles).occasional slamming into gear and car lurching forward.we have had 3 incidents that almost lead to accidents.we have had car in for repairs on 5 separate occasions, but dealer said they could not find anything wrong.letter of notification of defect to manufacturer sent to mazda corporate on 3/22/03. Car was taken into dealer for final chance to repair.dealer still says they can find nothing wrong.we purchased a 2nd mazda protege lx at the same time, and we have had no problems with its transmission and it shifts smoothly and properly.even though this is a dangerous and potentially life threatening issue and this car is clearly a lemon, mazda has done nothing to replace this car. *nlm

While driving automatic transmission didn't shift properly, none of the gears worked. Dealer inspectedvehicle several times, and could not duplicate or correct the problem.

I have a 2002 mazda protege lx with 61,000 miles on it. Recently my transmission failed and had to fix it with aamoco. Total bill, $2500. I realized the problem when i drove the car it wouldn't shift. It acted like i was driving in neutral. Mazda refused to take care of the problem and now i'm stuck with a have safe half reliable car.this is very dangerous because if your driving on a highway and you can't accelerate it creates a very scary dangerous problem.

We purchased a mazda protege5 in january of 2002.within a very short time, (~1000 miles, maybe less), we noticed a high pitched whining noise.this noise occurs between 50 and 75 miles per hour on average.we brought the vehicle in to mazda, and a mechanic immediately tied the problem to the transmission.so, in very short order, they replaced our transmission, (which worried me a little).unfortunately, this did not correct the problem, so we complained once more, and within a week or two mazda apparently released a bulletin which releases them of all responsibility.this bulletin apparently states that the whining noise associated with certain mazda protege5 vehicles is merely a vibration in the engine and will not affect the integrity of the vehicle or its resale value.i would like to suggest that i certainly would not buy an otherwise pristine vehicle if it whined every time i got on the freeway...i have to turn my radio up quite loud just to drown it out!!!mazda will do nothing for us, which is sad, because i have enjoyed owning this and other vehicles, but will not necessarily consider buying another.

Automatic transmission:there are two serious problems with the transmission which are potentially very dangerous. 1)when shifted into drive the transmission frequently fails to engage.depressing the accelerator from a stop results in a racing engine and almost no forward movement. This is extremely dangerous when pulling onto a high-speed interstate highway with other cars behind and around you.dealer mechanics offer explanations such as not really a problem, drive it like it is.this dealer had the car for over a week. Another dealer (suggested by mazda after contacting them) says we need to replace the transmission at our expense.this problem is worsening. 2)overdrive warning light on dash blinks on with no apparent reason.while this situation exists, the transmission seems locked in high gear.accelerating from a stop is once again a difficult and dangerous experience.

There is a distinct transmission whine/squeal that occurs when the car accelerates beyond 50 mph. This began to occur after about 17000 miles. It was not present when i purchased the car. Mazda claims this is 'normal' and caused by the resonance of parts which occurs once the engine has been broken in. This information was never disclosed to me when purchasing the vehicle and i feel it is bizarre that a new car would have such an inherent flaw that mazda feels is normal and that customers accept the noise factor once the car is 'broken in'.

2002 mazda protege5 was being driven at speed no greater than 40 mph and the automatic transmission would not shift past 3rd gear. Had car towed to local dealership where i was informed the transmission failed and would have to be replaced. The car only has 72,200 miles on it.in november 2006 the engine coil for cylinders 2 and 3 had an internal failure which flooded the spark plugs and made the car inoperable at that time as well.i am currently waiting to see if extended warranty will cover what i am sure will be a rebuilt transmission which if the same kind as already in the vehicle will most likely fail again.

My 2002 mazda protege has 61,000. The transmission has completely gone out on it. When i called the dealer to inquire if this was 'normal' because i had only once before had to replace a transmission at 120,000 she said, "oh yeah we get them all the time. Then wanted to charge me $4,500 to fix it."i went into the mazda dealer to try and replace the said car and i told him about my situation and he also said, "yeah, 61,000 miles, just after the warranty expires, they timed that right." i can not believe the transmission has gone out so soon.

The contact owns a 2002 mazda protege.while performing an emissions inspection, the dealer noticed a leak caused by a faulty transmission seal and stated that it was a defect.the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 77,000.

Dt: contact states while shifting gearsthe pedal goes all the way to the floor. The vehicle is still under warranty.updated 02/08/07.

I purchased a used 2002 mazda protege 5 about 3 months ago. The 5th gear started popping out of gear about a month later, then acts like it is in neutral when you put it in 5th gear. I was told i need a new transmission for about $2500. This should not be happening on this new of a car. I have read many other reviews and complaints, it seems like it is a pretty common occurrence, why isn't a recall being made?

Myself, the driver, rear-ended another driver at a speed of 35-40mph. The driver slammed on his brakes and i had no time to react. The result is a totaled front end w/ $4000+ of repairs. The seat belt did not restrain me and the airbag did not deploy. The car will be totaled and i suffered extensive bruising because of this failure.

I've owned my 2002 mazda protege5 for 7 years now. It's always had a vibration while braking. Even after having out brand new brakes, rotors and calipers. I'm very anal on how my car looks and drives. If i feel something out of the ordinary, i know something is off. This has happened ever since i've had the car. It does cause me to drive more cautiously especially in the back roads along with wet pavement. The steering wheel shakes while braking as well. As for the body of the car, the paint is faiding fast. It's yellow, and i hand polish and wax it once before spring, summer, and winter. I use maguires wax and polish every time. And it's also got a rust spot along the back left wheel lip. I am the second owner of the vehicle. And when i took it to the dealership to be repainted after i played for the car. It was magically only 24 hours from the warranty covering it. Other than that, it's been a great car. I would purchase another if i can find one. Something needs to be done about both of these concerns. Please fix and i would drive this car until it hits 1 million miles. As long as you keep maintenance up on it, it last forever.

Seatbelt will not lock in on driver's side and today the handle broke on the inside driver's side to get out of the car!

Drive seat belt latch broke into pieces.

Drivers front seat belt will not lock in.*ln

At first the seat belt locked and i could not get out of it. After about 15 minutes i was able to get it released. Thank god i was in the garage at home. Then approx 6 weeks later i was latching the belt to the buckle and the darn thing fell apart. The right rear door handle broke last year but since no one sits back there i never worried about it. Now with the seat belt issue i was searching for the part and someone suggested i check the recall list for this car, because they are not supposed to do that. I found numerous complaints on line and then this site.

I have been working on this car for maybe 2 years and the last few months it has been misfiring on cylinder 3. It seems that many other people have had this problem but cant seem to figure it out. Drivers side seat belt latch broke in the latched position.necessitated taking the latch apart to release the belt.

The driver-side seatbelt latch fell apart.the seatbelt is no longer operable.

I was driving at about 35 mph and hit a bump on the road that caused the driver seat belt buckle to come loose and it got in my way of the steering wheel. I was lucky to be driving on the left lane on one way street, i was able pull over, and to my surprise the buckle wouldn't latch to the female connector. It seems like the female connector pieces inside it had broken. Please check, this is a huge concern for anyone. If this would have happened on an interstate freeway i can't imagine taking my eyes of the road for even 1 sec. Please investigate!

2002 mazda protege.driver-side seat belt receiver , the piece that the seat belt clips into, shattered when inserting the seat belt.our car now has no seat belt, and there were no recalls for that particular year.we have to spend over $150 to have it replaced by mazda.

2002 mazda protege',in 2006 (under 60,000 miles) the driver side safety belt malfunctioned and began to stick. After a short time, it was no longer working at all. Seat belt failed to release upon pressing the release button.after about 10 minutes of trying it finally released itself.once free the seat belt no longer would work.had there been a fire i would not of been able to get out in time.

The driver's side seat belt buckle suddenly stopped latching.there was no way to secure the seat belt and safely operate the vehicle.

Driver's seat belt can't be used due a faulty retractor. Dealer notified. Consumer stated vehicle still under warranty, dealer statedseat belt waswarranted only 2 months.

The rear seat belt mechanism failed.while riding in the car my daughter fell asleep.when she sat upright the seat belt had twisted around her middle.she was able to release the latch but the seat belt was feeding back in and would not release.i tried to pull the seat belt and was unable to advance the belt.it would retract causing more constriction on her.i eventually had to cut the belt to free her.

2002 mazda power steering pump failures.pump has been replaced twice, now on its 3rd unit.. Car, a 2002 mazda protege5 has approx. 102,000 miles on it.first failure was a complete failure with loss of steeringwith no warning noticed.2ndpump leak was determined by mechanic causing erratic steering problems.first pump (on car when new) failed at 87,000 miles, 2nd occrred some 10,000 miles later.the third pump has only 3k miles and no way of telling how long it will last.mazda denies all responsibility.pumps has been replaced 2x and on its third pump on this car.old part not likely available.mazda told owner they have had no problems (ever?) with power steering pumps, a lie.check internet for power steering pump failures.currently recalling 500,000 power steering pumps on other years. On 2/7/2007 had a 15 mile highway ride, then proceeded three city blocks to park after exiting the highway.place the stick shift in reverse to parallel park however no power steering available.inevitably had to struggle with steering wheel to force the car into a parked position.upon returning to the car within about 10 mins the problem seemed to self correct.however, the return 15 mile highway trip proved that the problem was not resolved when a right turn was made into a business complex -- the power steering failed.according to the mechanic, a seal needed to be replaced on a pump.that same day as the incident, the car was taken to the mechanic who could not repair it the same day because the part was on backorder at the dealership until 2/19/2007.the mechanic stated that when a part is on backorder, it typically indicates that there is a systemic problem with the part.this in addition to the mechanic stating that this is not a typical problem that should be found on a vehicle, along with the fact that the miles on my vehicle are principally from highway travel (indicating less wear and the car) are the key factors that made me consider recommending this as a potential issue.additionally, although there is heavy rush-hour traffic in the washington dc area, i am not often affected by this which also reduced the wear-and-tear on the car.

My 80 year old mother was driving the car eastbound on sw 104 street when at the intersection of 127 ave. The steering wheel stopped responding and felt unattached to the wheels.i was informed today, by the mazda service representative, that it was in fact the geering box that had failed.there were no fatalities but there could easily have been if it was not for the good samaritan that used his/her own vehicle to forcibly bring the car to a stop.yesterday my mother was driving the car but if it had been another driver, a younger, faster driver, this incident could have been catastrophic.

I was driving on 905 west, close to the 805 n exit, and the road was broken. There was a hole on the road and my car's tire exploted when i drove by it. My car's alignment is lost. I almost had an accident because of it. Unfortunately i didn't have a good spare tire so i had to drive to my house with the exploted tire, and since it happened at 10pm i will have to miss work to fix it, and buy a new tire.

Bulges on sidewalls of both passenger tires. Tires are 6 months old and only have approximately 3,000 miles.

Driving car in pouring tropical rainstorm at about 40mph in heavy southbound three lane traffic. Windshield wipers were running on low. Turned wipers to high, they ran for about one minute, then stopped in the middle of the windshield. Had to immediately pull into center lane u-turn turnaround and sit there with flashers on until rain subsided (this in itself is dangerous). Wipers would not run at all after that. There were 1 adult and 3 children in the car. Returned home. Checked fuse and it was ok. Visual inspection of the windshield motor revealed that the ground wire had broken off at the loop where it held in place by the wiper motor mounting bolt (with washers). I suspect that the sharp edges of the steel washers had cut the brass ground wire loop over time. I also suspect that this loop has been broken for several years, and that when the wipers are turned on high, that the motor vibrates in the rubber mount bushing, and the brass ground loop shank jitters off of the loop (where it is normally just lying upon due to gravity), thus causing the motor's gound circuit to open, and the wipers to fail. The car has about 69,000 miles on it. The is a 5 cent part that has put out family in harms way twice now. If this is not just an isolated incident on my vehicle, i predict that there will be deaths and injuries caused when drivers cannot see where they are driving.

I bought a new 2002 protg lx in june 2002 and had no problems for 6 months.early january 2003, blower motor would not work on speeds 1, 2, and 3. Took the car to dealer and their report was that blower motor and resistor were defective.it happened again less than a week later and dealer stated again that the problem was a defective blower motor and resistor.the problem happened several times over the next three months all with the dealer stating that the blower motor and resistor were defective.the problem did not occur again until october 2003. Sometimes none of the speeds would work, and sometimes just the 4th speed.sometimes the problem would happen while driving or over night, and sometimes the problem would go away.the blower motor and resistors have been replaced 5 times by dealer and to no avail.this car is clearly a lemon and a hazard to drive when not being able to see through the front windshield because of no heat to defrost or defogger the windshield while driving.*la

Consumer states that front windshield is too thin, or defective because a small pebble hit the windshield and caused major damage.something small hit the vehicles windshield when consumer was traveling 55 mph.it resulted in a star shaped mark, then turning into an 8 inch crack opvernight.consumer believes this to be a sub-standard or defective windshield.*jg

Driving on fl turnpike at night in heavy rain, bumper to bumper traffic, wipers were on high, switched them to low (not intermittent) and the wipers stopped in the middle of the windshield. Trying to make it to the right hand lane with my head out the window so i can see, and they just came back on automatically. Made it home, keeping them on low. That was 7/17/07. Yesterday (8/1/07) in medium rain in daylight, went to local store. As a test, i put wipers on low a minute or so, then high, then back to low, then they stopped mid window again (all this in about 4 minutes). Turning them off/on would not make them come on again. I put them back on low hoping they would come back on. Traffic light changed and i had to drive across four lanes to store with no wipers. Wipers came back on automatically when i pulled up to the store (maybe 3 minutes after the wipers powered off). The car has about 60,050 miles, original owner, no accidents or other mishaps. It appears that i can reproduce this behavior.
