I was in a single car accident. I hit a guard rail, went through itand rolled down a 30 foot embankment.i suffered neck and shoulder injuries and back injuries. I have not driven a car since this accident. In the emergency room a nurse said i had a possible spinal compression fracture.i thought my car was suppose to have air bags, i saw the car for the first time since the accident yesterday. The whole car is beat up...the roof, the front, the back both sides, and not even 1 of the air bags deployed. I am so grateful my car had such a high safety rating... Yeah right. Now i am afraid to drive any car. And now the words air bag safety are a joke to me.*ph**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**768013

I don't remember the exact date of failure but it was close to the date i provided.i was driving down the road and my 2000 mazda protege started bucking.when i called the dealership and told them that i thought the transmission went bad they treated me like i didn't know what i was talking about. Sure enough i dropped it off and they dianosed it with a bad transmission.it was 2000 miles out of warranty. Thankfully mazda paid for the transmission being so recent out of warranty but i had to pay $700.00 in labor. Since then i have found that those vehicles were plagued with that problem and since then the car just hasn't driven like it used too. I am sadly dissapointed since i used to work at a mazda dealership and the mazda b4000 i had also purchased has problems too.

The dim lights went out and the bright light indicator came on.fortunately the bright lights worked, or i would have been driving without lights.the turn signal/light control wand was replaced.about two months later the problem repeated.it was late without much traffic and i drove home for 30 miles with only bright lights.this time i took the car to the mazda dealer.the wire controlling the lights had over heated which caused the wand to burnout and a wire connector to warp. A new wire was threaded from the connector through the firewall to the control wand.the lights are now working.

I feel that my 2000 mazda protege dx with 56,000 miles on it is a very unsafe vehicle. This vehicle has such low miles on it to be giving me any trouble. When i am driving, the vehicle feels as if it is going into overdrive by itself and then returns back to normal. My overdrive light flashes on and off when this happens.this is a very unsafe because when it does this, it lunges your vehicle forward. I have not been going very fast when this has happened. I am very afraid to drive my vehicle in fear that at a higher speed, this could cause an accident. I have read many complaints that are similar as mine. Something needs to be done about this.i have no warranty on my vehicle and really don't have the money to fix it, but it has to be done. From what i have read on the internet, mazda has produced a very poor transmission. I feel that this is only the start. I am hoping this will not lead to me putting in a new transmission. The transmission shop read the code as solenoids. I have an appointment at the transmission shop to get the solenoids replaced. This will cost about 400.00. I am hoping that this will fix my vehicle and give me peace of mind.
While driving engine and overdrive warning lights illuminated.dealer diagnosed that vehicle requires new transmission, radiator and other engine work.consumer very concerned because vehicle mileagewa slow and maintained regularly. Ts.
O/d light intermittently flashes on and off.does not happen all the time.also is accompanied by check engine light at times.low mileage on car - 50,000.mazda dealer says transmission needs to be replaced.another transmission shop has suggested defective solenoids. *nlm
When shifting from 1st gear into second gear andengine is cold, transmission slips, causing a loss of power. Dealer says it's normal.

2000 protege lx accelerator pedal was stuck in the depressed position.as a result of the accelerator pedal sticking the consumer was involved in an accident.on feb 21, 2000 the vehicle was taken to the dealer because the consumer heard a high pitched ping noise coming from the vehicle.the dealer was unable to duplicate the noise.the left rear door lock assembly was defective.the vehicle would accelerated and jerk while accelerating.
Own a 2000 mazda protege dx w/auto & air, 41k miles that was purchased new.upon driving for 45 minutes on the highway, the o/d transmission light starts blinking.when i bring to the car to a stop, turn off the engine and restart, the light is no longer flashing.i do not drive the car for more than a few minutes after the o/d light starts flashing before letting the car sit for several hours.the transmission fluid also gets dirty at an accelerated rate vs. What would normally be expected for a car.last full flush at 38k miles, and the fluid is now brownish-red.transmission shops tell me i need a new transmission for $1,500, but i can imagine i'd need that on a well-maintained japanese car with 41k miles.at this point i'm afraid to drive the car for fear the transmission will fail (from what i've been told) at any moment.i've heard this problem is prevalent in the 626, and also happens in the protege.please help in creating a recall on this issue.
Went into overdrive by its self with stressful jerk and loud noise the overdrive light came on by its self. Very concerned about the safety if this happens at high speeds on the interstates. Took the car to the dealer who could not find a problem.
I took my 2000 mazda protege to the dealer to have the rear bumper repaired. I had been hit from behind.while the car was at the dealership i asked to have the oil changed . The service man contacted me, and told me the transmission gasket had a leak.i called several automob ile repair shops, and found the cost of repairing the gasket cheaper than atdealership, especially since the vehicle was no longer under warranty.i was told by the repairman that it was not just the gasket, but the pump - basically the entire transmission.the cost was over $2200 to be repaired.i purchased the car new, and it only had about 36,000 miles on it now.the car has received regular maintainence.i think there was a major defect for a car with so few miles on it to have an entire tranmission replaced.
On severalnon-successive occurrences, while driving between 35 - 40 mph, i encountered a severe sudden deceleration which felt as if the vehicle undercarriage scraped an invisible bump. The deceleration is sudden, harsh and very unsettling. Also, while driving up east coast mountains, such as inmd. Va. And pa., the transmission seems to have a very bad smell as if heating up too much.eventually the transmission failed.it was replaced by dealer at no cost.now the replacement transmission is doing the same things again!it looks like the transmission is due to fail again!!
While driving there was a loud metal to metal noise at the front of the vehicle, and at the same time the vehicle lunged foward, consumer stated it happened a second time in which the vehicle felt as though it went into reverse and then back into drive, the dealer could not duplicate the problem, consumer believes that this maybe transmision related due to the fact that the transmission was upgraded.
As i accelerated to 30 mph, the "o/d off" light on the dashboard flashed and the speedometer stayed at zero, even though i was driving as fast as the other cars on the street. It felt like neutral gear. The manual indicates the flashing light is due to an electrical problem with the transmission. I remembered that within a few months of purchasing this new car, the transmission was replaced due to peculiar sounds, so i worry about the quality of this component since i do not drive much.

Check engine light and o/d off light were blinking.took car to the dealer and the transmission needs to be replaced.
I bought this car used from the dealer. Also with the extended warranty. The engine light comes on and the o/d light flashes. The rpm's increase and the car will bog down like it can't catch another gear. We have taken it to a mazda dealer to have it checked. They told us they can't find anything wrong with it. While we were talking to the mazda tech about the problems the car was having and he was telling us can't find the problem. There was a nissan tech standing there listening and after the mazda tech went to get our car. The nissan tech told us the transmission is going out on that car just by you telling what the problem is your having with it.he said he has replaced quite a few transmissions with this problem. He also told us a few other people had the extended warranty and it ran out and cost them to replace the transmission. He said as soon as the light comes on again bring it back to them again and again if you have to.well today is 11/03/02 and the light has come back on again and the o/d light was flashing. We will call monday to make an appointment again for this problem. Is there any help out there for this problem.dt

For 5 non-successive occurrences now, while driving between 35 - 40 mph, i encountered a severe sudden deceleration which felt as if the vehicle undercarriage scraped an invisible bump.the decel is sudden, harsh and very unsettling.my best guess is that it is due to a transmission problem.i already contacted the dealer about this problem, and they told that no one else has experienced this issue.i could not show the problem to the dealer since it occurs in happenstance.
Failed transmission at around 37,000 miles.

While drivingdown a hill transmission seized, throwing the passengers forward.consumer contacted dealership on two separate occasions; however, dealer was unable to resolve the problem .
While driving 50 mph check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and the mechanic determined that transmission needed to be replaced. Also, while applying the brake pedal vehicle failed to stop. However, consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic determined that the brakes needed to be replaced, and replaced them three times.however, the problem recurred. .....the transmission cost $1,800.00 to be replaced. The contact stated that a vehicle with not much mileage should not have a major transmission failure.the car jerkedand was shifting gears while driving.it was clearly a defective transmission.
I just spent 2200 on repairs to my transmission. My vehicle had been lunging forward while i was driving and the repair shop thought it was the transmission. They found major damage to the transmission. It was fixed and now my vehicle is lunging forward again. It just started again today. If i had been driving too close to someone, i would have hit them. Mazda needs to step up and fix this and do a recall. Now i have to go and let the shop try to see why this is going on. I may be out more money. I hate this car and i will never recommend mazda. And just note this vehicle only has 59000 miles.

While lightly accelerating the car suddenly jerked, made a loud noise, and felt as though it slipped into neutral.i pulled my foot off the gas and the car recovered.this has happened 3 times within the past year, all incidents occurred around 40 mph.i noticed the car usually downshifts at this speed, but had not before each of these incidents had occurred.the car has less than 30k miles.i took it to the dealer, they did not find anything wrong and could not reproduce.i have researched this independently and found that 4 cylinder mazda's have had similar transmission problems since the switch to ford transmissions in 1994/1995!!i feel mazda should have addressed this long ago and that their dealerships should be well aware of the problem.*nlm

Shift lever will not lock in drive or neutral position. Just touching gear shifter without pressing button and the lever will shift into gears. Consumer took vehicle in to the dealer, dealerstatesthis was normal operation.
I have complained continuously to dealer and manufacturer since car had approx 4,000 miles. A "clunking" noise was coming from transaxle area. Both dealer and mazda rep, told me to "wait and see" or "thats a normal sound, don't worry about it". Yesterday while operating my 2000 mazda protege es at approx 60mph on interstate 93 n transaxle failed. Car was fine one second, the next seconf i was free wheeling, no power, engine continued to run, but it was if i was in neutral. Most fortunatly it was daylight, dry conditions, and a highway exit was right there, i coasted off the highway down the exit ramp and called for help.had i been in the passing lane, or if conditions were poor, this could have been a disaster.

The left front seat belt would not release. My spouse spent fifteen minutes trying to get it unbuckled and popped a blood vessel in her thumb trying to release it. Going to replace it and see what happens. Will contact dealer to see if it can be warrantied. They should, it is a safety item!
Consumer stated that 2 months prior to vehicle being involved in anaccident seat belt light kept coming on and off.then, when vehicle was involved in a collision, seat belt did not work, and air bags failed to deploy.consumer sustained cervical strain/knee andlower backinjuries.
Dt:the consumer has a 2000 mazda protege.the driver's lower seat belt fell apart.the consumer has contacted several dealer who told her the she couldn't get a replacement.all of the other seat belts are fine and there are no cracks in them.the consumer's vehicle has not been in an accident.
Seat belt latchon the retractorwill not stay in place.vehicle had been taken to dealer for repairs, butproblem comes back and forth.
I was unable to release the driver's side seat belt. I crawled out under it and eventually got it to release. It seems to work ok now but i'm now leery of it.
Sealt belt broke on passenger seat, belt latch was latched into the case and release button broke immediatly, while trying to disengage the belt (by pushing on the button) the case broke inhalf, but remained engaged until completely disassembled.
Passenger seat belt failed during first use by jamming. Passenger unable to disengage seatbelt which caused passenger to have to "slither" out of seat. Pushing the button made the assembly crack in half at the seams. Inside of assembly appears to be made of plastic.
I owna 2000 mazda protege which i purchased in april of 2000. Well twice the seatbelt on the back seat right side has stayed jammed. I had fixed before at amazda dealership. However when i went back on the second occasion i was toldthat my warranty expired and to get a new seatbelt would cost $500 . I feel thisis a manufacturers defected and i shouldn't be charged. When i expressed this to the manufacturer i was given the runaround, or told to speak to mazda or told to go back to the dealership because it wasn't their problem. Needlesstoin the end i got a "so sue us " statement. What can i do or can you help?

I had been in an accident in early 2006 that was reported to the police and when i applied my brakes, they were not effective.i thought it was the type of tire i had on my car so about 2 weeks ago i spent 600 for top of the line tires. On 11/17/2006, i was behind a car that slammed on their brakes and when i applied mine they did not slow the car down so i kept pumping them so hard i bruised my foot and crashed into the person in front of me totaling my car.i had my seat belt on but since there was no indication that the brakes were being applied, the belt remained loose and my head smashed into the windshield shattering it.after giving my info to the driver i hit and making sure that i was alright, he left and said not to worry as the damage to his car was minimal and he could fix it himself. An officer did arrive and noted that my tire marks were extremely faint on the drivers side and almost undetectable on the passenger side which supported the brake failure.i don't know who i need to contact to examine my car to determine the brake failure but i need to do this before my insurance company claims the car. Any assistance or direction would be greatly appreciated.

While driving abs light stayed on. Ph.also, dealer replaced failed speed sensor.
Brake system is failing intermittently. It has done so about six times in a three week period before bringing the car to the mazda dealer for service on september 13, 2001. Specifically, on some occasions when the breaks are applied, the brake pedal goes to the floor eventually stopping the car, but very slowly. On other occasions, the brakes appear to operate properly. The service department at ocean mazda claims they are unable to duplicate the problem, and therefore cannot fix it. I have elected to leave the car at the dealership for an extended period of time for fear of driving it.

Over the past year, my 2000 mazda protege es makes a thumping noise when going over bumps. It sounds like something is hitting the floor. I've had the car back to the dealer for repairs six times over the past year. After having the service department replaces various suspension parts, the noise goes away...only to return a month or two later. The last time it was at the dealer was on monday (2/3/03). The noise was gone then. However, after driving to and from work today (2/4/03), i noticed that it came back tonight. I'm a little reluctant to drive the car, since i'm not sure exactly how it is going to behave. If it's going to do this after a few miles, what is it going to do on longer trips?
Less than two months after purchasing my 2000 mazda protege new from the dealer i took the vehicle to the service dept.while accelerating, the car would jerk and buck as if i hit a brick wall.the car continued to do this.each time i complained to the service dept. At the dealership i was told nothing was wrong.i also contacted mazda corp. To inquire if there were any other complaints or recalls.i was advised that mazda had not received any similar complaints.just shy of three years of ownership i again took the car to the dealer service dept with the same problem concerning the car's acceleration.this was my third request to have the dealer look into the matter.again, i was told nothing was wrong with the car.the car's acceleration continued to act up.on may 26, 2006, with 66097 miles on the vehicle my accelerator stuck and i struck another vehicle and a cement base light pole.each time i took my foot off the brake to shift from reverse or drive, my car would take off on its own.i have sent the nhtsa a detailed written complaint via postal mail.that complaint is dated june 5, 2006.there was a high pitched noise coming from the front of the vehicle upon acceleration. My 2000 mazda protege lx has had some "major surgery" lately. About a year ago (early 2008), when backing up especially, the car would make a stress then pop noise on the right side and towards the middle underside of the car.i was told this and that. I had new rear struts put on, alignments, tightening of the suspension, etc. Some of these worked temporarily. My car was involved in an "accident" at the end of december 2008. We had bad snow and ice and my car's left front tire hit an ice rut pretty good. After that, my car popped and popped. Turns out, the entire steering rack and everything that goes with it had to be replaced. When i drove the car back to work after the repair, the stick shift turned to jello. I barely made it back to the repair shop where it was discovered that the bushing had come apart. Well, now i have been battling a creaky clutch peddle. With each release, it creaks like an old hinge as if it's trying to get back into position.it's getting worse. I talked to mechanics and read on-line about it. Some say it could be the fluid reservoir (how empty it is) or this spring that is rubbing on another component. Thepedal feels okay, it's not loose. I just now wonder if this is coincidental due to the repair of the steering rack and weak bushing of the stick shift. And for the record, the manual in the car is for an automatic transmission, not a 5spd. I bought the car used in 2001 with 24,000 miles on it.
Car always pulls toward the right. More pronounced with passengers in the car. Have tried allignments and tire rotation.nothing helps. Drove several other 2000 proteges, and they also pulled. I feel this is a defect, possibly related to the suspension of the car being too stiff for the size and weight of the vehicle.
The vehicle needed a front end alignment. The consumer a experienced a flat tire, however upon opening the trunk she discovered the tool kit was not there. According to the owners manual the tool kit should have been there. Updated 07/10/06.

While driving abs light stayed on. Ph.also, dealer replaced failed speed sensor.
2000 mazda protege dx.since purchase in 3/2000, the car will occasional jolt when accelerating. No mechanic can say why. The trunk is hard to get into. The rear door seals continue to come free (the back seat is rearly used). Hub cap clamps are broken/missing (pointed out to me in yesterdays oil change) now resulting in loss of a hub cap . This morning i noticed both rear door windows where glass meets the door- the to of door is bowed and seal is bowed out as well.the brakes squeak- everytime i have oil changed (every 3000 miles) i complain, they are checked and i am told they are fine.
Issue with a 2000 mazda protege es, 5 spd. When driving engine will hesitate, when pressing accelerator, causing "jerking" of the car after accelerator was pressed or released. It feels like the fuel is not delivered properly. Dealer ran the diagnostics numerous times and was not able to find or fix the cause. It seems that probkem goes away when engine warms up.
Windshield on 2000mazda protege cracked in 2 different places for no apparent reason-car was parked in safe location, not hit with anything, etc.
Consumer was traveling on the highway in rainy weather, the windshield wipers were inoperable.dealership aware of problem.*scc
