1995 mazda protege.both airbags deployed when my daughter hit a curb.no other damage was evident.tires and rims had no damage. The bags should not have deployed. Recall 95v184000 describes problem with inadvertent air bag deployment on this vehicle.mazda claims that my daughters vehicle was fixed in 1995. This undercarriage impact caused the bags to deploy hurting my daughter and the passenger side bag door cracked the windshield. Very expensive items to fix for no reason.

-the contact had a 1995 mazda protege which was in a head on crash. The contact stated that the car was traveling at 55 mph under dry conditions when the vehicle was struck by another head on. The contact stated that the driver side air bag did not deploy and as a result the driver was killed. That contact stated that there weren't any skid marks in the road to indicate that either vehicle tried to stop. I have a detailed account written to the dealership - who can this be sent to?in general in two separate accounts,one after the car had been fixed for the problem,we were driving when we experienced a roughness in the engine. In less than 5 seconds the tachometer began to wildly fluctuate, concurrently loss of power to the gas pedal.within about ten seconds the engine stalled.we could not restart the car.the dealership had just replaced the distributor ,performed a major tuneup and reset the timing on the timing belt for $ 700.00.within six hours of getting the car back,the same failure occurred.
The distributor is a none wear item that shouldn't just give out. Mazada admits to have replacing many on the protege and 626.

I have been having problems with my engine light coming on and off for some time now. It would come on for a while then go out then come on again then go out again. In july of this year i took the car for a diagnosis because the engine light was on but they told me i needed a tuneup which i got but the engine light came on a week later. Also my dashboard light has been going out and coming on also. It started by going out when i put my signals on to turn a corner it would go out then come back on now it goes out and sometimes it wont come on at all. I noticed if i pushed the light control switch in and hold it thats the only time it will stay on as soon as i let it go it goes out. Then now my taillights are out and i took it to a shop and they look at the fuses and try to see why i dont have any lights back there and they said they couldnt see why the lights were out. They said they would have to take the whole thing apart to see what is wrong with the car so thats when i came to the conclusion that there is some electrical shortage or something to do with the electrical system that is wrong with the car. I also see they had a recall on the car a year ago which i had no idea about.
The wires from the headlight switch and turn signal stalk cracked from constant flexing.this is in the small loop just before the wires enter the steering wheel assembly.the initial affect was intermittent headlights going off when the turn signal was used.i spliced the wires once last summer, but it failed again.the red wire to the headlight relay is very thin.luckily this happened both times near home.i saw similar consumer complaints on your database: 536495, 976418, 977383.
I'm not sure it's the electrical system--that's what the dealer is telling me now.first, it was the alarm, then the fuel pump, then the fuel pump relay.this was after they had done "diagnostic" testing.

Transmission is jerking when we accelerate trought the gears -engine trouble light code says clutch assembly defective as for headlights the switch went defective and the dealer says that it is not covered under the recall.
Consumer took vehicle to dealer for recall repairs, 00v118, however after repairs the headlights would go out when the directionals were used, consumer took vehicle back, in which the dealer replaced the combo switch, however charged consumer for repairs, consumer is waiting for reimbursement.

This is a repeat of nhtsa campaign id number : 00v118000. I had the car repaired at the mazda dealership in year 2000 under the previous recall. 1 month ago the headlights stop working due to a broken wire in the headlight switch assembly. The ground wire broke its solder connection at the base of the switch. I have dissaembled the switch and connect a temporary ground wire to the base of the switch. There is something wrong with the engineering of this switch assembly if it happens again!

Myexperience has been that when ever it rains(hard with wind) my air filter somehow gets soaked in wet.when i explain this to a mechanic or anyone for that matter, the first question they ask me is whether i drove on puddle of water on the road.the answer is "no!"when it is raining that hard i don't go anywhere and therefore the car is just parked on the parking lot.i've taken to mazda one and the ran a test and found nothing.meanwhile "my engine" light stays on.i have a spare air filter that i use.in the meantime what can i do? .

The automatic transmission on my mazda protege failed completely at 75,500 miles.my mechanic informed me that the friction clutch had been disintegrating for some time and that the debris had caused the failure.even after the transmission was rebuilt, problems persist.i believe the problems are a safety concern.on one occasion i was forced to make an emergency stop.after the very sudden stop, i tried to accelerate away from the immediate scene, but the automobile would not move.i had to shift from drive to neutral and back to drive in order to move the vehicle.i believe this is a potentially serious safety problem with my transmission.

When turning to the left, there's a hard popping/clunking noise. We took it to the shop twice & they said they couldn't find a problem.the third time we had it looked at we were told that there might be a stress fracture in the front axle and that the cv boot/joint assembly needed to be replaced immediately.we have already replaced the cv boot/joint once before and replaced the struts on the front of the car twice since we bought it.we are now having to replace the struts again (on the advice of an ase mechanic) and find out that these have been on factory backorder for months (which tells me there is a serious problem with the front suspension on these cars).this car is not safe to drive in its present condition for fear that the front axle may snap and cause a serious fatal accident.
Driving in downtown washington vehicle started to drift towards right, cv joints broke, causing vehicle to go out of control, resulting in accident/injury.
We have experienced a chronic problem with a rattling sound from the front end of the car around the brakes and the cv joints. We took the car to a mazda dealer who informed us the problem was the lack of caliper pins in the front brakes. We had the dealer install these necessary parts (about 4 months ago) and the problem seemed to go away for about 2 months. However, now the problem is back. -we will be taking the car back to the dealer again but are very concerned this could be a structural safety problem that could be serious. Both sides of the car seem equally affected.
I find it a little confusing that both cv joints failed at the same time.is there a recall out for this product that i might be able to utilize.

Front sea tbelt latches are too low, clothing tends to get caught in them, also difficulty for someone with hand problem, such as arthritis, to use them.

The front seat came loose and was rocking creating the safety problem. It remained attached on the right side but the left side was loose. There was no accident or incident to cause the failure of the seat . I took the vehicle to the dealer and they would said to contact mazda. I contacted mazda and was told the vehicle had over 100,000 miles and were not going to do anything about the cost to make the seat safe again. I asked if safety had a mileage limit and was told no but they were not interested in fixing the seat. I think it violates the intent of fmvss 207 and told them so.
The bolt holding the seat came undone i got it back in place and put another nut on it.it recently became loose andwhen i went to fix it the metal was broken completely off and now my seat rock back and forth.is this a common problem on protoege'sseats?
On feb 4/99 while pulling away from a stop light, the driver's side seat tilted back quite dramtically causing me to grip the steering wheel to maintain control of the vehicle. The drivers side seat had become unstable and it was difficult to drive the car particularly during acceleration and maintain control. I went to the dealer on feb 10/99 and for $36.92 they inspected the vehicle and found that the sliding seat track was broken. They indictaed the car appeared well maintained and that the problem was not the result of poor maintenance but instead seemed to be a manufacturer's defect. They said the cost to repair the vehivles was $209 cdn plus labour for a total of about $300. I approached mazda canada and the dealer to see if they would cover the cost of this manufacturer's defect. The dealer's sevice manager said the vehicle was beyond it's5 year 80,000 km warranty period and there didn't seem to be anything he could do particularly since i hadn't been bringing my car to them regualrly for routine maintenance. Could you please let me know if this problem has shown up in othermazdas and what recourse i might have if any. I will also be checking what help i can get from canadian regulatory agencies. Your assitance would be appreciated.thank-you.
During rearend collision, driver's seatback rest broke, then collasped rearward, at approx. 35mph, css was behind at time, no child in seat, no injury.
I am a small women who only weighs 135 lbs and this seat broke it is very unstable and i am afraid i will have an accient with my 2 children because of this problem apparently is a problem, i have seen on epions.com another similar complaint about this problem. I would appriciate if this would be looked into so this problem can be resolved. Please let me know if this is not the first complaint to your organazation. I would appriciate a speediant response to my coplaint, so i can find out if the manufacturer will pay for this or not!

Premature wear of front brakes, causing noise.
We have experienced a chronic problem with a rattling sound from the front end of the car around the brakes and the cv joints. We took the car to a mazda dealer who informed us the problem was the lack of caliper pins in the front brakes. We had the dealer install these necessary parts (about 4 months ago) and the problem seemed to go away for about 2 months. However, now the problem is back. -we will be taking the car back to the dealer again but are very concerned this could be a structural safety problem that could be serious. Both sides of the car seem equally affected.
Caliper pins are binding which results in premature wear of the pads and loud noise.*mjs

When turning to the left, there's a hard popping/clunking noise. We took it to the shop twice & they said they couldn't find a problem.the third time we had it looked at we were told that there might be a stress fracture in the front axle and that the cv boot/joint assembly needed to be replaced immediately.we have already replaced the cv boot/joint once before and replaced the struts on the front of the car twice since we bought it.we are now having to replace the struts again (on the advice of an ase mechanic) and find out that these have been on factory backorder for months (which tells me there is a serious problem with the front suspension on these cars).this car is not safe to drive in its present condition for fear that the front axle may snap and cause a serious fatal accident.

I have been having problems with my engine light coming on and off for some time now. It would come on for a while then go out then come on again then go out again. In july of this year i took the car for a diagnosis because the engine light was on but they told me i needed a tuneup which i got but the engine light came on a week later. Also my dashboard light has been going out and coming on also. It started by going out when i put my signals on to turn a corner it would go out then come back on now it goes out and sometimes it wont come on at all. I noticed if i pushed the light control switch in and hold it thats the only time it will stay on as soon as i let it go it goes out. Then now my taillights are out and i took it to a shop and they look at the fuses and try to see why i dont have any lights back there and they said they couldnt see why the lights were out. They said they would have to take the whole thing apart to see what is wrong with the car so thats when i came to the conclusion that there is some electrical shortage or something to do with the electrical system that is wrong with the car. I also see they had a recall on the car a year ago which i had no idea about.

On four occasion while backing out of garage vehicle suddenly accelerated while applying brake. Believedthis happened becauseboth pedals are set too close together. Dealer notified.

At 5000 miles the rear defrost did not work.in the winter it is difficult to see out the back window.it was not fixed because the car was out of warranty and mazda would not repair.
