2002 mazda mpv.consumer writes in regards to vehicle air bag light being on.the consumer was informed his vehicle identification number, was not included in the recall.
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mpv. While traveling 45 mph the vehicle crashed into the side of another vehicle. None of the airbags deployed. There were no injuries reported. The vehicle was not inspected for the air bag failure or repaired. The current and failure mileages were 172,000.updated 07/06/12
While driving, the consumer's vehicle was involved in a collision at 35 mph.the consumer's vehicle hit the other vehicle in the driver's side.upon impact, the air bags did not deploy.the consumer was injured.*sc
I was just setting in my 2002 mazda mpv es and with the key turned to on spot not to start the vehicle so that i could put down my window.after a minute or so my srs airbags in my driver seat and passenger seat deployed without any warning.injury to myself was moderate.my biggest disappointment is that mazda would not help me at all and suggested i turn it into my insurance under comp.insurance is only taking care of the damage from this defective product and i have to pay out of pocket to have the other airbags checked for safety.i bought my vehicle new and never had been in any accident.
At 72k, transmission failed while driving at hwy speeds. Transmission went into neutral on its own. Had to replace transmission. Also all 6 coils have been replaced.1 failed at approx. 38k, 2nd at 50k, the remaining at 72k.
I'm experiencing misfire with the 2002 mazda mpv. The engine coils are the culprit. This is a common problem with many mpv owners and is a manufacture defect. It causes the engine to jerk and lose power and consume more gas. Some reported this issue with only 25,000 miles and mine is around 47,000. I believe this should be a recall for this is a common occurrence.
Engine was hesitating during acceleration causing difficulty in driving, especially merging into traffic.problem got worse as engine heated up.dealer diagnosed problem as a bad coil but could not determine which of the 6 coils were faulting. Dealer finally gave in and replaced them for no charge after i complained to corporate. Possible recall item?
Complete and immediate failure of transmission on highway going 65 mph of 2002 mazda mpv with 39167 miles followed by failure of failure of ignition coil.mazda did offer to go in with half of the charge at $1624.27.ignition coil was a 396.03 charge
Driving van on major hwy (h-2 freeway) at 50mph, suddenly a decrease in power and engine died . Prior to the engine incident, noticed my dashboard got fairly hot and radiated heat in the interior area.
My 2002 mpv suffered a complete transmission failure at about 75k miles, stalling out in morning traffic and needing to be pushed from the road.the transmission occasionally kicked when shifting since the car was new.i called mazda, which refused to pay anything toward the repair, saying it had relinquished liability for a vehicle several years past warranty.despite what i see in nhtsa's complaint log and elsewhere on the net, mazda told me that it does not agree that the transmission on the 2002 mpv is unusually prone to failure.in the past seven months, this mpv has needed several other expensive engine repairs, some of which also repeatedly show up on the nhtsa complaint log:3 ignition coils, a pcv hose, an idle control valve, and an oxygen sensor.this is quite a string of expensive failures for a car less than 7 years old.the dealer offered to do the transmission work for $3600, although it looks like i will have it done elsewhere for somewhat less.i strongly urge nhtsa to reevaluate whether a recall is merited for the 2002 mpv's defective transmission. The consumer stated he had to have 3 ignition coils, a pcv hose, and idle control valve nas a right upper oxygen sensor. Updated02/12/09.
(2) of the back (3) ignition coils failed, causing the minivan to misfire and run poorly.the minivan has 24,000 miles on it.the coils have been redesigned, since there was a design flaw.my minivan is almost (5) years, so it is out of warranty.many other mazda mpvs have had the same problem recently.
Had to replace two ignition coils within 100 miles of each other, and at least one of the coils has been causing problems for a year.also, itled to a catalytic converter malfunction.
Car caught on fire while driving. Mazda 2002 mpv minivan.
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mpv. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The vehicle would also not accelerate properly and shook while idling. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine coil pack failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mpv.the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle shook violently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who could not diagnose the failure.the manufacturer was notified of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 122,000.
I bought this car for 6 months, the engine light on twice, didn't fix it first time, the advisor said the gas tank cap is not close tight enought. Couple of days later, the engine light is one again, this time they found controlsystem incorrect flow, small leak, hose off of purge valve at air cleaner housing.car pulls to left on highway and right on local street.brought in 4 time, admit alignment on the 3rd time and fix it, but still pull.brought in again the fourth time, said found no pulling problem.we complaint that the car occasionally jerk when press gas paddle, the jerk feeling simliar to the way the car got hit in behind.they foundno code for it.the car beep, they can't find any code for it.there are many problem we found in the car, but they said they can't find the code.one advisor think that the car's pulling because the car is too high. Also, it happen 3 times since i bought the car that after i placed the gear to reverse, then place it back to drive, the car won't go but the engine run.to fix it, then i place the gear back to park and to drive, then the car back to normal run.i'm very regretful to have bought this car.it has so many problem and the dealear doesn't seem to want to fix the problem either.i'm, the consumer have to paid financially, and mentally for this car.it is a disaster.
2000-2003 mazda mpv models have a coolant seepage from rear heater pipe which can cause severe engine failure and traffic hazard due to non-drivable vehicle.mazda mpv 2002 was found to have a coolant leak in rear heater pipes and was taken to mazda repair center. Mazda advised a vehicle should not be run without coolant since it can damage the engine, and replaced the lines for a cost of $1000 (parts + labor).mpv was driven 18 miles after completed repair, then the engine suffered a complete failure in traffic and vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection, posing a danger to mpv passengers as well as other vehicles. Mazda repair center claims the engine failure is due to driving with low/no coolant prior to repair. Regardless, if the engine failure was due to a failed repair or due to the reason mazda states, this is a known product defect by mazda that should be issued as a recall notice to all affected mpv owners.mazda has issued a technical service bulletin (us bulletin no: 07-002/05) stating that warranty repair is approved only if the vehicle exhibits coolant leakage and the vehicle is within the extended 7-year warranty from vehicle in-service date.tsb reference: http://mazda5club.com/tsb.php?id=168this known product defect should be issued as a recall notice for all affected mazda mpv models due to the high risk that complete engine failure poses while operating the vehicle in traffic.
2002 mazda mpv stalled unexpectedly.the consumer stated the engine would just shut down without any warning lights.
Since new, hesitates between 40-50 mph, causing sudden loss of power, high rpms but no acceleration.removing foot from gas van sometimes recovers.has had transmission control module replaced as a result, then ignition coils were blamed and those were replaced one by one, sometimes more than once, then coolant temperature sensor went, now at 85,000 transmission went.each event stranded my family by the side of the road and car had to be towed.
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mpv.as soon as the warranty expired, the contact experienced failures with her vehicle.the dealer stated that the vehicle had major engine failure.since the summer of 2007, the entire vehicle vibrates when driving 40-50 mph and stalls when approaching a stop.the vehicle is able to be restarted.the dealer stated that cylinder three was misfiring and informed the contact that newer models have been upgraded.when the vehicle stalled, the check engine light illuminated, but there was no brake or steering failure.the contact also smelled rotten eggs in the passenger compartment.the transmission was repaired and the catalytic converter was replaced, in addition to other small failures.the vehicle began rusting within the first year of being purchased.the vin, purchase date, engine size, number of cylinders, transmission type, powertrain, and fuel system were unknown.the current mileage was 67,000 and failure mileage was 7,000.
Oil burning smell was filling the cabin of the van whenever it was running. Brought the van in to have them find out what was happening, they put dye in the oil to track an oil leak which was leaking on the exhaust directly behind the engine. Returned a week later to find out they believed it was the timing cover and ordered parts to replace the gasket. Returned a week later and left van to be repaired. Two days later we picked the van up and drove home. The next day the smell was back. Called the dealership back and had to schedule another apointment (a week later) which they said they could not find any leak. There is fluid (possibly transmission fluid ) leaking on the other side of the engine. I have another apointment scheduled to return for other issues such as the dash lights flickering on and off when vehicle is cold, and a thumping noise in the front of vehicle. This van only has 14000 miles on it and i do not need it to catch on fire...
While coming to a red light and applying brakes vehicles engine died.causeunknown. Consumer claims this is a factory defect.mazda offered consumer an extended warranty.*jg
Rotten egg smell coming from exhaust system. Vehicle has 13,000 miles on and odor seems to be getting worse.
A strong chemical fume entered inside the vehicle. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.
The transmission "bucks" when shifting out of first gear.this happens mainly after accelerating, letting your foot off the gas, and then re-accelerating.the car has been in several times for the same issue, and it continures to occur.the dealership does not consider this a warranty issue, though we have had the same problem with the car since we the 2nd week we owned the vehicle.it should be noted that there have been a number of transmission "updates" that the vehicle has gone through as part of service.in addition there is a sulfur smell emitted by the exhaust system.we were told to change to "good gas" which we did and we continue to have the smell.we were then told that mazda would not look at this problem again until the vehicle had 10k miles on.
The exhaust system released a bad odor. The dealer and manufacturer recommended the consumer change the type of gas which was being used, however the odor still existed.
Loud tapping noise existed for several months, sounded like a valve tapping.problem was a cracked exhaust manifold.dealer found cracked manifold and a stripped attaching bolt. Both were replaced. Manufacturer subsequently repaid me for cost of parts.i paid labor.
Consumer noticed a "rotten egg" odor in cabin.dealer has not been able to determine cause. The manufacturer sent consumer a letter stating that several models exhibit the odor.consumer believes vehicle has an exhaust leak into cabin which includes carbon monoxide.consumer has exhibited symptoms of breathing those particular fumes.ph

- the contactownsa 2002 mazda mpv.the contact stated that the elbow fitting connected to the intake manifold developed a tear which caused a vacuum leak in the engine and made the brakeslosevacuum assist. The contact had the vehicle taken to the dealer where he found that there was a recall for this part that was good up to 70000 miles.the contact stated he was not notified of the recall.
The exhaust system emitted bad fumes.

The catalyticconverter malfunctioned and as a result a foul odor seeped through the vents and inside the vehicle compartment.this problem has been occurring since the vehicle was purchased.the smell is very foul and has caused problems for the consumer's asthmatic child. *ph *nlm
Had to replace two ignition coils within 100 miles of each other, and at least one of the coils has been causing problems for a year.also, itled to a catalytic converter malfunction.
I have had three issues with my minivan.i have had a rotten egg smell for the longest time and was told to change the type of gas i used.after further persistence with the dealer, i was told that they are having problems with the catalytic converters and they are now finally replacing them after 5 trips to the dealer complaining.second, there was a computer sensor failure which caused the van to overheat...i had to be towed to the dealer and get a new sensor and temperature gauge.third, i have been complaining about hesitation in the transmission on turns and when slowing down and then accelerating.this is still unresolved.i would also like to state that the stearing column gear shift is extremely annoying and i have on more than one occasion hit the vehicle out of gear.
Exhaust system: catalytic convertor vehicle emitting strong sulfur oder from catback system. This is not acceptable, especially at 20,000 miles. Dealership service dept. Noted this was a common complaint with this vechicle ( mpv). Dealer said- "this problem seems to be common in new v6 and v8 engines.- something in the design of lower emmissions.again, unresolved- thisis notacceptable (for any vehicle).
Engine was running rough and misfired. One dealer said this was a transmission module.after keeping it for several days and said the sparks needed adjusting, waited on the transmission module because it was running fine. Then it stopped suddenly in snowy weather, towed, i was left stranded for 2 hours in cold weather, battery replaced,2 months later it was running extremely rough and misfired. A new dealer said it was not the transmission module but the coils and all would need to be replaced for a $1,000. They said 3 were bad, but if they replaced those they would be back redoing the others with ina few weeks. Car had 56,000 miles ,but was past warranty date not warranty mileage. This seemed to be what was wrong all along. I understand the catalytic converter might go due to this problem. I have heard that coils should not have to be replaced at this point.
We have had a terrible "rotten egg" smell coming from our exhaust since we have purchased the vehicle. We were told by the dealer that the van would be replaced without any inconvenience to us. The dealer later withdrew that offer because mazda corporation felt this was an isolated incident. We were also informed by the dealer to try 3 tan fulls of the same gasoline and the smell would go away. They told us if this did not work to go to other gas stations and start this process all over again until we found a brand that would work. We have tried this and have no improvement in the smell. We were also told by the dealer that ford motor company (who makes the engine) issued a statement to mazda service centers that this smell will go away between 8,000 to 12,000 miles. I asked the dealer, mazda corp., and ford motor co. For a written copy of this statement, and no one could provide one for me. Have you had other complaints about this defect? i do not believe it is reasonable to expect a customer to put up with this smell for up to 12,000 miles. It is very embarrasing when people pull up next to you in traffic and hold their nose because of the terrible smell from our exhaust (this has actually happened.) have their been any recalls issued to correct this defect? thank you.
While driving at any speed engine check light came on, andvehicle stalled. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for a check up. Dealer determined thatpcv hose split.consumerreplaced pcvhose two times in the last 9 months.*ph

I am the owner of a 2002 mazda mpv with approximately 36,000 miles . On the evening of february 16, 2011 while driving home with my daughter in the carthe right fog light started a fire in the bumper.there was arecall issued for this many years ago for this exact problem. At the time of the recall, i did bring my car in and supposedly the problem was corrected.however, given what has occurred last night i strongly believe that the problem was not corrected, despite what the records with mazda say. I feel there was significant negligence in the attempt to repair this under the recall as the exact problem the recall was said to fix has actually occurred.i have contactedfrank at mazda 800-222-5500 extension 1154 and he is refusing to help me with this matter.i have also contacted a local dealership, and they also refuse to help me with this matter.this is a huge safety issue that was not corrected properly and has caused damage to my car and there is still potential for additional harm as the other fog light may still be at risk.i am reaching out to you for help in correcting this matter by having mazda take full responsibility. I have done research on line and found another such occurrence that happened todriver on 9/16/2010.
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mpv. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph a pedestrian advised the contact that the left front bumper was on fire. The contact pulled over and called the fire department. The vehicle was towed to the contacts residence and then to the insurance company. The dealer was informed about the failure and stated that they would not address the problem. The dealer alsostated that they already performedthe following recall on the vehicle ; nhtsa campaign id number: 03v206000 component: exterior lighting:fog lights . The insurance company stated that the vehicle was destroyed. The failure and the current mileages were 110000.updated 12/29/10 updated 01/03/11
2002 mazda mpv lx caught on fire due to the driver's side fog light on 8/26/03. We had responded to a recall put out by mazda and took our van to first team mazda in chesapeake, va this past june 2003. We had the recall work done and actually had a problem with the passenger side fog light being dislodged whenever we took it in .as far as we knew, the problems were corrected. At any rate, we are now concerned with the safety issue of these fog lights. When we contacted mazda customer service, we were told that they had not heard of any mpv actually catching on fire and have proceeded to "create a file" on our issue.would really like some feedback on why we were the ones who happened to experience a fire. We have the oldparts and have a claim going with usaa. At this point, we are rather leary about driving a van that may catch on fire again. Please help us get the word out on this hazard. *nlm

Van has a horrible sulfur smell. It is worse when stopped at stop signs and red lights. I feel this is a safety issue because defroster is shut off to keep smell out creating bad visibility and possible dangerous situation. Also smell is so bad driver is distracted and/or nauseous.
Left (behind driver) rear auto-sliding door will not shut.electric door feature must be disabled & door must be shut and re-opened manually.if not able to duplicate problem for mazda repairperson, they would not perform service; but problem was sporadic & could not be predicted.finally the problem persisted & lower door switch was replaced.one year later, problem is occurring again.door terminals were cleaned b/c contacts were not making good connections.
Transmission failed, completely disengaged. No warning.had to be towed. Required a $2500.00 complete overhaul.very low miles on this vehicle, always properly maintained.
This complaint may not be about a safety issue of my 2002 mazda mpv van. However, it's definitely about part design defects. Over years, i was struggling to solve engine light-on which took place every once while.recently, the thing got worse - engine idle rough, engine lack of power, jerking at speed higher than 40 mph or at up-slope. After long time struggle, i've finally found the problem, which was caused by a pcv hose failure.i've never thought it was a pcv hose problem, because the original pcv hose (part # aj51-13-89) has been recalled by mazda and replaced by new one (part # aj51-13-89ya, it looks like revision a) back to years ago. I've thought mazda has solved the problem. Obviously, it?s not yet. This time the pcv hose has failed again, and it's so weak that the hose collapsed again under vacuum pressure. To fix the problem, i ordered a new hose, part # aj51-13-89yb. If you look at the part # carefully, you can infer that mazda has realized that their revision a hose didn?t work, which was used to replace the original under recall # 2204h, because they have re--designed revision b hose. It?s clearly that the original hose and revision a had design defects. However, they haven?t issue a recall to replace revision a yet this time. Mazda should really recall this pcv hose again.the thing is even bad to customers. Because the design defects and uncertainty of the part make the hose really special, no retail stores carry this hose. The only place you can find it is at mazda dealership, and it costs $67, much more expensive. It?s just a rubber hose, usually a couple of dollars.
Transmission failed in 2008, had it replaced and it failed again in two weeks.van drove fine until summer 2011, when i noticed transmission problems again.took the van to a dealership to have it fixed again, but was told there was nothing wrong with it.finally, on 14 march 2012, the transmission stopped pulling and will not engage past 2nd gear.this is the third transmission at a cost of $2700 each, puts a big strain on a family.this issue needs to be recalled and mazda needs to be held accountable.
2002 mazda mpv with 39,000 miles. Transmission totally failed on us55 halfway between bloomington, il and chicago. Had to have car towed back to chicago. Transmission has to be replaced. This is my second one. When i bought car in 2002 transmission failed in 1st week of ownership and had to be replaced.
Driving on highway with my family when my mpv wouldn't shift so i could pass a truck.then it started to lose speed. Would depress gas pedal and the engine would rev but no speed.had to pull over to breakdown lane which became a very dangerous situation.we are lucky we didn't cause an accident.mpv would not work in drive, reverse, 3 or 2 gears.we were stranded on the highway and had to be towed back home. Diagnosis: transmission gone.this is a common problem with the mpv and should be addressed.have had shift problems in the past where dealer just resets the codes. I won't have itfixed. I have lost confidence in this manufacturer.
2002 mpv at about 7000 miles the transmission started to drop out suddenly.we drive a loton country roads and there is no shoulder to pull over on.we were very lucky not to get into an accident.this happend twice, then we took the van into the dealership.they could not find the problem, but changed the fluid.driving home from the dealer, within 10 miles, the transmissionstarted to slip again.at a stop light it failed completely, and we were unable to move.my wife was in the car with our two kids, stranded.fortunately, i was about a mile ahead of her, and came back for her and the kids.the vechile ended up being towed back to the delership, and they are now replacing the transmission.
We have 83000 miles on our vehicle.we have taken our vehicle in for the required check ups at 20k, 30k,,for issues concerning air sensors.we had not received any caution by the dealer that we may have issues with any part dealing with the powertrain even after the dealer "26 point inspection" they always talk about.my family was driving from a doctor appointment, and the transmission started jerking in and out of gear.we called the dealer, and were informed that the car could have a transmission issue and not to drive it.nobody was injured through the jerking motions of the car, but luckily, we were in our neighborhood when it happened. It was towed to our dealer for a diagnosis, and we were informed that it needed a new transmission.
I have a lemon 2002 mazda mpv. We have taken the van in for several attempts to fix the transmission problem, only to be told that there was no indication that the transmission was going bad. I also experienced the nasty rotton egg smell in my van only to assume it was the area i was in (sewer). On april 1, 2004 i was driving on a highway with my three children in the van when my van stopped working. I pulled over onto the snowy highway to try to restart the car but failed. After sitting on the highway for 2 hours, waiting for a tow, i came to find out that the transmission went bad in my van. They replaced my transmission over a period of 8 days. The very next day after receiving my van back, it would not start in the mornings and began to backfire and stall. I took the van in the night before the service day only to be with out it for another week. I just got my van back on april 23. It still does not start in the mornings or after it sits for several hours!!!! so if you are experiencing the bucking, kicking, hesitation shifting gears.....your transmission may fail!!!!! i have found out that my car is a lemon under ohio's state laws. I am getting my money back!!! we picked mazda for their known reliability and satisfaction. I sure hope mazda will make this right with us. Good luck to all of you
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mvp.the contact stated that while driving 55 mph on an incline, the transmission failed without any prior warnings. The contact shifted the vehicle into neutral in order to prevent himself from being rear-ended, he had to push the vehicle to a parking lot. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and a technician concluded that the transmission pump was design defectively; however, upon notifying the manufacturer he was not provided any assistance. No repairs have been made. The current and failure mileages were 58,000. Updated 12/07/09 updated 12/09/09.
Transmission failure.
Automatic transmission "bucks" or otherwise shifts violently into the next gear (any gear, pick one).my mpv currently has 26,000 on it.we have been experiencing this problem for over a year, but haven't had the time to take it in.finally took it in to the dealer.service manager stated (with a straight face) to me that the brakes (calipers) were creating "drag" and the violent shift would occur when reaching the threshold of power to go into the next gear.he recommended that we have the brake pads replaced and the rotors "turned" (for $250).we did not have the work done, but picked up the car.the shifting was a lot better when we picked up the car.that lasted about a week.now it is starting that jolting again.we took the car to big o for oil change, tire rotation and specifically asked them to check the brakes.rotors and calipers are fine and the brake pads only have 25% wear on them.now, i am blonde, but it seems to me that if the brakes were creating "drag" there would be a much higher percentage of wear on the pads, or there would be something indicating that the calipers were malfunctioning, especially after 26,000 miles.in fact, the big o manager thought my husband was a little daft in asking about brakes having any such affect on gear shifting.
The transmission on my 2002 mazda mpv failed with just 53,000 miles on it.i had noticed some problems shifting on hills and freeways.the repair man called it "flash shifting" when i took it in to be checked out.dealer diagnosed the problem and performed a "reflash" of the transmission control module.3 days later, the car lost the upper gears.lost the others the next day.i had it towed to another repair shop as every time i take the car to the dealer, i'm back 2 months later with a more expensive repair.the transmission has now been pulled out 4 times in 6 weeks to be rebuilt, replace solenoids, etc.i have heard that many other mazda mpv owners have had to replace transmissions on vehicles with even lower mileage than mine.i believe that this car is dangerous.i'm afraid to drive it with my 3 young sons.i'm so grateful that this happened in a parking lot at a soccer game and not on the freeway on the way to that soccer game.the results could have been disastrous.mazda should be held responsible for selling cars with faulty transmissions.we are still waiting to get our car back from the third repair.maybe it's finally fixed, maybe not.
2002 mazda mpv transmission kept slipping out of gear .
My husband and i own a 2002 mazda mpv lx. Last week on saturday, october 31, 2009, the transmission failed while my husband was driving on the walt whitman bridge coming to philadelphia. Although our van is 7 years old, it only has a little over 40,000 miles on it and we keep it in great condition. After having it towed to 2 different mechanics, it is now costing us between $2400-$2600 to have the transmission rebuilt. The mazda dealer where we purchased the van told us it would cost $4,189.00 to rebuild the transmission. We are not in a financial position to purchase a new or used vehicle, so we are borrowing the money to pay for this costly problem.after reading hundreds of complaints regarding transmission failure (i'm sure there are a lot more) without warningon the 2002 mazda mpv, especially at low mileage, i believe a recall of this vehicle is in order. I also believe the 2002 model of the mazda mpv has a defective transmission. Itis extremely dangerous to have this happen without any warning. Thank god the transmission failure did not cause an accident and that our children were not in the vehicle.
At just over 80,000 miles the transmission on my mpv stopped shifting into higher gears. There was absolutely no warning except for a few times when the transmission seemed to feel like it was slipping, certainly no warning lights or messages showing it needed to be serviced.
(1) 2002 mazda mpv required two transmission repairs under warranty: one module, then a second module installed as part of recall, then third module mistakenly installed when a burned-out coil was the actual problem. (2) at 68,490 miles and age of 41 months, with warranty expired, transmission failed dec. 13, 2005. Diagnosis was failed seals.(3) lee myles transmissions installed rebuilt transmission with updated parts designed to fix weaknesses in original transmission at cost of $4632.10.
Transmission failure:if you read other complaints about the mpv you will see many problems w/ shifting in the transmission.i had the same problems and was told the same story by the dealer; that the software needed upgrade, change the trans-fluid.at 55,000 miles my transmission died while i was going 75 mph on a freeway.i was nearly hit by a semi trying to pull my car off the road.i was 5,000 miles and 3 months past the warranty of the vehicle.mazda did negotiate w/ me to replace the transmission at a reduced cost because i had repair history with a mazda dealer.the cost went from 3,500 dollars (i did receive 3 quotes from different companies) to 600 dollars.like many of you i purchased this vehicle because of the consumer report ratings.i am very disappointed in this vehicle and no longer trust it.by the way i have not had the rotten egg problem that i have read in many past complaints.
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mpv. The contact stated that the transmission had been slipping on and off for the past two years. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 136,000.
My family & i just experience the same catastrophic transmission failure as described in these entries.we have a 2002 mpv es with 54,000 miles and were returning from a weekend gateway to coer d eleene id.luckily we stopped at a state park to stretch when the transmission gave out, 130 miles from home.after arranging for our mpv to be towed to the nearest mazda dealership i pondered what went wrong and if i overlooked something. I came up with the following items. I performed all the regularly scheduled maintenance.i believed i mentioned on two separate service visits that the vehicles rpm are running high before a gear shift occurred but i don't see these comments in the customer invoice.during our trip i did notice the shift flaring but only when going up moderate to steep hills.i'm also very disappointed with mazda, i was expecting a much more reliable & dependable vehicle.i now question if i'll ever purchase a mazda made vehicle again.
Transmission failure, while 200 mi away from home, over $3,000.00 usd damage.
My van started jerking into 2nd gear and it had no pickup, i could feel it not catching gears so i took it to my mechanic and they say it needs a new transmission.it will cost between $2000 and $4000 to fix.
At 72k, transmission failed while driving at hwy speeds. Transmission went into neutral on its own. Had to replace transmission. Also all 6 coils have been replaced.1 failed at approx. 38k, 2nd at 50k, the remaining at 72k.
Transmission failure with no warning, all scheduled maintenance completed.
Dt*:the contact stated while accelerating or decelerating, the transmission has shifted hard since purchase.the dealership has performed multiple software upgrades, but the problem remained.the transmission downshifted while traveling up a hill at 75 mph, and the rpm's revved above the red line.the vehicle was pulled over and towed to the dealership who determined the transmission failed and replaced the transmission.
Driving along with my 2 1/2 year old daughter on the freeway in very fast and very busy traffic conditions the van suddenly and without warning lost all power transfer to the wheels. The red lines raced up into the red, but the van would not be propelled any further by engine power. I had to coast nearly a mile or more on shoulder less rush hour highway, all the while transitioned lanes to the first exit i could access, then as momentum decreased i had to step out of the car into extremely heavy traffic and push a further 30 yards to the first turn-off, drivers door open, baby screaming with 55 mile an hour traffic screeching and swerving around me and the blind corner i was hidden behind. The van has 54,000 miles on it and is well looked after may i add. Now mazda says "not their problem" but look at all the other people on here with the exact same story! low mileage 2002 mazda mpv drops transmission with no warning in busy traffic. Its a wonder no one has been killed or injured. I feel lucky for me and my daughter. They are now attempting to charge me with $4000.00 for a rebuilt transmission, 1/4 of what i paid for the car used 10 months ago. Yes the car is out of warranty, but every manufacturer worth their salt offers "good will" programs for things like this, not mazda. Last mazda i buy, not only is my most precious possession, my family, left in harms way but then they try to soak you afterwards. Don't buy a mazda that's my advice. Why no recall by the way?
I own a 2002 mazda mpv. It has about 94,000 miles on it. Recently while driving the car, i was trying to increase speed but the car would not go faster, instead the car began to redline and decrease in speed.when i applied pressure to the gas pedal the car was running but did not move.i had to pull over on the shoulder of the highway, luckily i was in the slow lane otherwise i may have caused a severe accident.there was no indication the car had any problems, no warning light or system failure light at all.the car was towed to a local shop and i was told the transmission was shot.cost to repair $2,600.after researching this problem i found that there seems to have been a recall mazda of japan for 81,000 vehicles.also it is the number one problem cited for mazda mpv vans some with far less mileage than mine. I am very upset about this incident as i was traveling with my two young children in the car at the time and was fearful for their safety.
On the freeway, my transmission failed and has to be replaced.my car only has 42,000 miles.
Transmission in 2002 mazda mpv failed on 19 in summersville wv.van serviced at mazda dealer and transmission fluid flushed at 88000.failed at 97,000.had to push off of highway.extended warranty is only covering part of cost.
Complete transmission failure at 67,000 miles in our 2002 mazda mpv2. All routine maintenance had been performed. I was driving on the highway (thankfully close to home) at the start of rush hour and was unable to maintain 40mph - the car would not shift down, the revs increased, but i had no acceleration. I was able to get most of the way home before the transmission started audibly whining and came to a complete stop. My 10 year old and i pushed it into the side of the road.we had the car towed to the local transmission shop who said we would need the transmission replaced. Mazda would not consider any out-of-warranty help unless we had the vehicle towed to a mazda dealership (at a cost of $100 for us) and diagnosed there (another $100). Having done this, they said no help would be made available. They said this was at the discretion of the area service manager, but refused to give his contact details so we could not discuss this with him. We have researched this problem on this website, looking at problems listed under automatic transmission. The numbers of complete transmission failures needing replacement are as follows for the specific years: 2000 = 1 probable failure; 2001 = 1 probable failure; 2002 = 40 complete failures; 2003 = 1 failure; 2004 = 2 failures; 2005 = 0 failures; 2006 = 0 failures. It seems clear to us that there is a problem with the 2002 mazda mpv transmission. People should realize that mazda are not standing behind their product when there is an obvious problem like this. What will it take to get mazda to accept some responsibility? it looks like this will cost nearly $4000 to fix. I don't think we'll be buying another mazda ..ever.
The transmission in my 2002 mazda mpv failed.the minivan as less than 65000 miles. The transmission failed without warning and it's currently being repaired.the transmission failure left me and my wife and 2 children under the age of 8 in the middle of a 3 lane highway. Stranded, i needed a tow truck to get the car to the repair shop.i am the original owner of the minivan and it's incredible that an engine will fail so early.
We have sent in our mazda mpv 2002 van into 3 different dealerships six times for the same transmission issues.everyone except one gave us a could not replicate problem answer.however, the one dealership that could replicate the problem said it was the mechanics of the transmission and we should not worry but logged in an incident during our warranty in case we had problems in the future.they also indicated that it would be handled as a warranty problem when and if the problem became worse and needed repaired.now, the problem occurs all of the time with 3,4,5 gears shifting hard.mazda has not corrected this issue and wants to charge me money for the repairs.after consulting two transmission specialist, they said it needed a rebuilt or replaced transmission.
My transmission failed on my 2002 mazda mpv (only 49,000 miles! on it) on a busy california free and i was lucky i wasn't injured.i had no warning, just complete failure while on a busy incline.was 250 miles away from home too, and had to be towed to nearest mazda dealer.found out the warranty is only for 3 years on trans, but if i had purchased the car in 2003, the warranty would have been 4 years and i wouldn't be stuck with a $3500 bill. Also received shoddy service by salesman at dealership because service wasn't open and i had to find my own way to get rental car and ended up spending 3 days in this town.will never purchase another mazda ever!
I was driving my 2002 mpv es with 60,000 miles on it when it suddenly would not go into drive(auto trans).i tried putting it in 2 and 3 with the same results.i paid $780 a week ago at the dealership to replace coils 1, 2 ,3 and now this!
Complete and immediate failure of transmission on highway going 65 mph of 2002 mazda mpv with 39167 miles followed by failure of failure of ignition coil.mazda did offer to go in with half of the charge at $1624.27.ignition coil was a 396.03 charge
I was driving my 2002 mazda mpv minivan with 91,000 miles on it on the freeway and when i tried to accelerate, it would not shift into higher gear. It seemed to go into neutral and i began loosing speed. I have done all maintenance as was suggested in the handbook by mazda. In fact, mazda has done all of the maintenance. This was incredibly dangerous as there were no warning signs. I was told by mazda that it needed a new transmission and mazda refused to accept any responsibility for this even though it is a known issue with this model and year.
I was driving our 2002 mazda mpv, with only 59000 miles on it.we purchased the vehicle new in 2002.in this incident,i suddenly found that while driving at about 38 mph, i tried to accelerate (to 40 mph), and the vehicle decelerated instead.i repeatedly tried this, and the vehicle kept slowing instead of accelerating.we turned the car off, changed drivers in the shoulder, and repeated the same problem.there were no warning lights, just worsening of the problem, with extreme slowing.we managed to get the van to a service station.we were just informed that the transmission needs to be replaced.something apparently snapped in the transmission, with no warning.the car will go in reverse, but will not go forward.we were headed for the highway that day, and are fortunate this happened where it did, not on a highway, but on a smaller road right near a service station.we are very lucky and extremely frustrated with mazda.this severe and potentially dangerous problem could happen with no warning, on a well-maintained vehicle with relatively low mileage.the engine is being rebuilt for $2400, and we have been able to borrow a car for the duration of the repair.and by the looks of it, many owners of the 2002 mazda have had the same problem!
Like so many others. My transmission failed while driving on the freeway. Total transmission failure. Approximately 80000 miles.
We have a 2002 mazda mpv (first owners) with 104k; followed all manufacturers recommendations for maintenance.died on the way to work this morning, had to be towed to shop. They want 6000$ to replace transmission (with a rebuilt one).i'm shopping around.the car isn't worth 1/2 that for trade-in.we have had the trans module replaced about 3 years ago.
O/d light flashing and harsh shift. My family and i was planning to take a trip to williamsburg va, and when i start the van, i discovered the o/d (over drive) light is flashing and harsh shifts. I took the van to amoco and ask to check my transmission. The service tech told me everything is normal, however we noticed your gears are not shifting smoothly. They could get any code of what causing. I left their shop and stopped by cottman transmission. They also scanned and couldn't get any code; they also test drive the van and also noticed same thing that amoco has told me. The tech has asked me to take to the dealer and give this bulletin # 05-001/04 (harsh shifts - reflash pcm). I dropped the car to the dealer over night and mention what have happened and also mentioned the bulletin number. I have received a call the following morning from the dealer service department. The service adviser has told me that i need a new transmission and when i ask how much, he said it will cost to you about $3200. This shocked me and decided to do some research. I found out this has happened to thousand of mpv 2002 owners, which one forum has suggested that i should file a complain here.
The contact owns a 2002 mazda mpb. The contact stated that he was unable to remove the key from the ignition. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the gear selector lever needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 96,000.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving at 20 mph on neighborhood roads, the vehicle began to lurch as if braking very hard, and nearly causing a crash.the vehicle was taken to 3 different service dealer mechanics, who could not duplicate the problem.the dealer determined the entire transmission should be replaced.
The transmission was shifting rough so we had the car in to the dealership. The dealership flushed the transmission fluid and reprogrammed it. After the service the transmission started flaring and less than 100 miles later wouldn't shift to overdrive. I was on the freeway, so exited and at the second stop-light the car would not shift into gear at all. I had to push it off a 4-lane road and have it towed back to the dealership. The dealership reported the transmission had failed completely and required replacement.
I bought a mazda 2002 mpv lx used with 9k miles on it. It has a transmission problem similar to those i have reviewed on your site, intermittent hard shifting between first and second in the automatic transmission. Took it to the dealer and they found a code reference an electrical adjustment. Supossedly fixed, not! took it back and was told the 2002 mpv has hard shifting. So does my old police baton! i am taking it back and talking to the owner to get the trans fixed or replaced. If they will not do that then i will go to 3 reputable transmission repair stores and get it in writing and file a consumer fraud complaint with the state of fl. Can you look into this being that there are more than one transmission complaint listed and all are similar and we get brushed off?
2002 mazda mpv es had a transmission failure without warning on interstate.we did make it to a exit ramp, but could not pull to side of road. With three children under the age of 8 was worried about there safety.mazda has informed me that the internal pump in transmission goes without warning, striping out gears. My cost for a new transmission is 2800.00.upon researching this i am finding that this is a common problem among mpv owners.first and foremost i am concerned about the safety of others when a catastrophic failure occurs without warning.unable to move a vehicle on a busy highway or road is dangerous.second i hypothesize that a defect may exist with the internal workings of the transmission in finding so many owners with this problem through mazda clubs, and compliant websites.
The vehicle began to have a hard time shifting gears.the rough shifting began very intermittently at about 45,000 miles.at 51,000 the shifting was so hard that the tires actually screeched when the van shifted gears.problem caused by defective solenoids.2 of the 8 solenoids plus the torque converter had to be replaced to fix the transmission.dealership would not cover the cost of the repair since we did not get the van to the service department prior the 50,000 mile mark.the torque was available as 'rebuilt".
Transmission failed in my 2002 mazda mpv at 111k miles.after reading several stories online that sound identical to mine, i felt compelled to file a complaint.i was travelling on a major interstate with 5 cubscouts and the transmission completely failed, leaving us stranded on the side of the road.transmission gave no warning that it was about to fail, other than a few rough shifts from time to time.mechanic checked fluid levels and pressure of transmission and all checked out okay after incident.this was not driver or maintenance error.the transmission will not engage at all in drive, low gears or reverse.
Shifting was "clunky" since we bought the car in march of 2002. Had dealer look at problem in oct 2004 and they "reflashed" (rewrote the computer code) on the tcm: transmission control module. This seemed to help for a day, then the abrupt shifting returned. On nov 10, 2004, the transmission failed completely, unable to go into gear at all. I was traveling at 55 mph on a highway, it shifted out of gear, and would not go back in. I was left without power to the wheels in the middle of the road. Dealership replacing transmission under waarranty.
I have had trouble with the mazda mpv transmission of my car since i purchased it in september of 2002. The transmission has intermittent rough shifts/jolts. The dealer has tried to make adjustments and also changed the transmission fluid at 20,000 miles (which i was charged for), but the problem continues. This is the worst-feeling automatic transmission i have ever felt, so i purchased an extended warranty because i do not believe that the transmission will last to 100,000 miles.
Extremely rough upshift and downshift which the dealer says there is no fix for.i have taken it in three times in the past year to two different dealers to correct the transmission and it is still not fixed.absolutely ridiculous.*la
Transmission failure after 5 documented trips to dealer about transmission problems:- car bought 2/2002.- 8/6/02-10,816 - hesitation from start. Wife complaining of poor driving characteristics. Dealer couldn't verify anything, even that the cel was on. - 2/21/03 - 21,065 - rough downshifting. Wife thought tranny was slipping and kicking in. Dealer flashed tranny per tsb on the 3-2 downshift known problem.- 8/27/03 - 26,235 -poor shifting. Dealer said shift solenoid sticking. Flashed tcm again. (not sure what they did to correct solenoid)- 11/19/04 - 41,979 - tranny & torque converter flushed after complaining of poor driving again.note: - contacted mazda corporate about the lack of transmission maintenance in owners manual.mazda said there's no maintenance required!- 4/4/07 - 94,xxx - without warning, no accelerating, car simply stopped moving on the highway. Tranny was slipping bad and my wife was nearly killed pulling off the highway! fluid level was ok, color was ok, but it smelled burnt. Car required towing. It was diagnosed with total transmission failure.i called mazda usa, who said the car is out of warranty and no assistance will be offered.i called the dealership where it was always serviced, and they said that they've never seen mazda support a car out of warranty like this.i complained to both about how this was a documented problem from new. If i was smart, i would have filed a lemon law complaint and gotten a full refund back then, but they just kept insisting it was a tcm program. I never imagined that the tcm would be able to cause the tranny to physically fail.also, the fact that these trannies have internal, non-serviceable filters is just poor design.lastly, honda has the same issue with their odessy, but they are covering the repairs in full!my friend had his tranny replaced at 88k miles!i'm exploring legal avenues of recourse.
At 68,000 miles, the transmission on my mazda mpv totally failed on a busy interstate highway outside of chicago.it was towed in and needed a totally new transmission at a substantially high cost.the vehicle was 18 months out of its 3 year warranty.this is apparently a "known issue" for mazda mpv transmissions.i will never purchase mazda again.
Vehicle has 79600 miles on it. I am the original owner and have maintained the car well. The transmission has completely failed and needs to be rebuilt to the tune of$3500. Mazda seems to be taking thier time getting in touch with me. They had denied that this is a cronic problem. This will be the last mazda i will own if the mazda usa cannot live up to the fact that the transmissions are faulty.
The transmission in my 2002 mazda mpv with 62,000 miles on the odometer, failed while driving in the carpool lane on the 405 freeway in orange county california.fortunately i was able to pull the car over through 4 lanes of traffic to the shoulder.the failure occurred with no warning and no lights came on the dash.had this happened in another situation it could pose a very serious safety threat.
While driving on the freeway, the transmission began to not transfer power when automatically shifting out of overdrive when the accelerator was pressed.after getting off the freeway and coming through a busy intersection, the transmission failed completely (zero power transfer) nearly causing an accident in the intersection as the vehicle coasted to a stop.the "check engine light" did not illuminate until after the transmission had completely failed.the vehicle had only 57k miles on the odometer and all service had been done by the dealer up to that point.the vehicle was brought to the mazda dealer and diagnosed as total transmission failure.the fault code was p0752, shift solenoid circuit stuck on. Despite the vehicle being past the 3 year/50k mile warranty period, mazda offered to replace the transmission with a factory rebuilt unit.we were responsible for the labor costs and split those costs with the local dealer. Judging by the already large number of similar complaints registered on the nhtsa site, this is a known, common problem with these vehicles and an investigation into this transmission defect should be started.
-the contact owns a 2002 mazda mpv.while trying to accelerate into traffic the vehicle would not accelerate.the rpms raced to 5000, but the van wouldn't move forward at an accelerated speed.he stated that the vehicle decreased in speed, and the transmission disengaged and down shifted.he was able to accelerate a little after that for about a half mile, trying to keep up with traffic.the vehicle lost acceleration power again.aamco informed him that it would cost $2,000 to have a diagnosis of the transmission.he then had the vehicle towed to rosenthal mazda, who had the vehicle since 04/02/07.while the contact had the vehicle he always had problems with the transmission.he had the tcm module reprogrammed on three other occasions. He contacted the manufacturer and filed a complaint, and was given case# 112644580.the current and failure mileage were 64,000 miles.
While waiting at an intersection vehicle accelerated uncontrollably.however, consumer was able to apply the brakes andvehicle stopped completely. Mechanic inspected the vehicle and determined that transmission control module needed to be upgraded. However, the problem recurred.
When shifting the indicator will intermittantly not show what gear vehicle is in. Overdrive light will begin to blink. Vehicle has been at dealer for a total of 9 days for testing. Problem is not remedied.nlm
Gear shift detent at drive is too easy to miss when shifting from park - lever skips drive and goes into higher (less powerful) gear. When at rest and pulling into traffic, there is insufficient power to accelerate as expected, so oncoming traffic gets dangerously close before you realize the gear shift is not in drive. Need warning that car is not in lowest gear when shifting from park or reverse. *nlm
This is about a potential safety hazard and a couple of near accidents. I love everything about my new mpv except for the incredibly poorly designed steering column mounted shifter. It is unnecessarily long and interferes with access to and view of the climate and audio controls. I have knocked it out of gear more than once (including once when i was driving down the steep downhill grade of the i-5 grapevine) reaching to turn on or off the radio, and i hopped a shoulder once on the freeway when trying to look around it to find the a/c button. My husband also knocked the shifter into neutral when reaching to turn the radio on. The problem is the brace on my right wrist, which i wear when driving due to a recently broken/severely sprained wrist . I asked the dealer's service manager if they could replace, shorten or bend the handle and he refused. (my husband would even try to bend the handle, but we're concerned about damaging the shifter and/or voiding the warranty)i have serious concerns about the potential for accidents posed by this poorly thought out lever (the only bad design on this wonderful van). I hope that you can convince mazda to correct it.
Vehicle shifted very hard when shifting from first to second gear. As a result, vehicle shook uncontrollably.currently, the problemmoved to second and third gears. Mechanic indicated there was a communication error with the chip and the vehicle. Did not resolve the problem.
My 2002 mazda mpv had a transmission failure at 42,000 miles. It had continuously slipped to neutral at highway speeds leaving the consumers family in a perilous condition.updated 09/18/07.
The drivers seatbelt clasp or buckle refuses to accept the steel tab, and will not lock.
Seat belt fails to latch, making it unuseable.
Driver's side seat belt latch will not readily engage.requires multiple and forceful attempts to get the seat belt locked.

My wife was driving mazda mpv van which is 2002 model. She was driving at about 20-25 mph and tried to apply the brakes when she saw another car approaching the road; the brakes did not engage and she started hearing some heavy sound coming from engine. The van continued to accelerate and she had to take wide turn to go right on another road. My wife tried to apply brakes several times but van was still accelerating and reached about 35-40 mph or higher. She had to crash the van in the trees which were there in the middle divider section of the road. Two to three trees got broken before the van got stuck in one of the trees and then stopped. During this crash, front tires got burst, front of the van got total damage, middle section of the van also got damaged and my wife got neck and back injuries. The van is currently located in the liberty mutual insurance company warehouse in sacramento.

When raising the rear lift gate door, one of the bolts that secures the lifting piston to the van broke and the lift gate fell. The person lifting the door was able to get out of the way so no one was injured. I contacted my mazda dealer to report it to mazda but the service manager talked me into letting them replace both pistons no charge. The bolt that broke was rusted and so was the other one. I think they should inspect all vehicles and replace them.
The liftgate damper pivot bolt broke, causing the liftgate to fall on my head.it only fell a couple of inches because of my height. I see there is a recall in canada for this exact same issue. I called mazda - they stated my car was not covered by the recall.i saved the old part. I replaced the 2 dampers and bolts- about 160.00 in parts.below is the canadian recall no: 2905l, date : 04/2005,model: mazda mpv2000-2004. Subject: liftgate stay dampers and stud bolt replacement. Summary: note: this recall is applicable to canadian vehicles only. On certain vehicles, the liftgate stay dampers and stud bolts may rust and stick together, causing the stud bolts to break off. In the worst case, this condition may allow the liftgate to suddenly drop during opening or closing, injuring the operator. Correction: dealers will replace the left and right dampers and stud bolts.

Coming up to red light.hit cancel on cruise lever and it did not disengage.the turned it off with the button.light went off but was still engaged.i also was applying the brakes in a panic.....still not disengaging. Put car in neutral.....engine rpms went to redline...i then turned ignition off before crashing into the cars stopped at the light......very very scary. Saw recall and other people with exact same problem.called mazda and was told my vehicle was manufactured 3 months after the dates on the recall....therefore not their problem.how can they say vehicles made 3 months before are unsafe but other ones are not.....isn't is possible they got the dates of manufacture wrong?i a persons life not worth fixing this know issue???
