Headlight malfunction mazda mpv 2001while driving my mpv on city streets & freeways, the low beams flicker, or turn off, and the high beam indicator illuminates on dash board. However the high beams do work.when this occurs it persists both when stationary or in motion. The low beams will intermittently and momentarily turn on, later the "high beam" indicator will illuminate that the low beams off again.no reason.i cannot drive at dusk or at night due to the issue of never knowing if the low beams will work or not! if i drive with high beams all other motorists are honking or bothered.i have had the bulbs checked and replaced as well as the fuses, all check out good.an electrical specialist advised that i call mazda and enter complaint due to safety issues, because he cannot trace any faulty wiring.troubleshooting this has been very costly. They had to review the schematic of the switches on the steering column as well as connections to headlights - no anomalies found.mazda has responded to my request for assistance.

Burring smell came from engine since last maintaince performed to resolve recall.abs light came on, the vehicle suddenly stopped and had to be jumped to start - this happened three more times and was taken in.the alternator has been determined to be at fault, but it is only days out of warrenty and mazda refuses to cover.

Check engine light on repeatedly( at least 15 times in the past 12 months with the same 4 or 5codes) car jerks when idling. Replaced o2 sensors, manifold gaskets(2), spark plugs and wires, top engine clean, many times the light was just reset. It was under warranty the first time it went in but even though it is the same thingover and over it is not covered. Dealer said they didn't know what was wrong with it. I could leave it there and maybe they could find something. November, 2003 to december 2003 was at the dealers for "12" different times that the light came on. This november it has started all over again. Do not have the old parts.

When i initially bought this vehicle it had been through previous owners and i have been trying to fix things but am a single mother of three and i just can afford much but i happen to put the yr make and model into the google one day and notice of recalls and as i read the same as whats i had already noticed had already happened and i figured i could live with it but i woke up one morning got in it and boom driving for ten minutes and boom all of a sudden i have no gears and then i get 1st and nothing else then eventually no reverse , so after almost getting stuck in the cold streets with a baby and my friend, i barely made it home i wanna know why such a nice vehicle is so fuct!!! and why did i get a bunk deal. Like i thought this was my break finally i wont have to worry so much about a vehicle just the other stuff, but to my dismay........... Here we are?????? and if you happen to contact me i can then explain in detail the destruction of this vehicle

While driving 40 mph vehicle suddenly shut off.vehicle was towed, and the alternator was found to be defective.

Ignition key stuck and won't come out of ignition switch. I needed to replace all the column, a new battery, a new ignition system......thousand dollars. The dealerk is now notified.

Consumer was unable to remove the key from the vehicle. Dealer stated that the shift interlock was defective consumer will have to pay for the replacement.

The contact owns a 2001 mazda mpv. The contact stated the vehicle was shut off and in the park position. As the contact exited, the vehicle began to roll backward until crashing into a tree. The dealer contributed the failure to a faulty ignition switch. Theignition switch was replaced by the dealer and the failure had not recurred since the repair. The failure mileage was 87,000 and the current mileage was 88,500. Updated 11/22/10updated 11/23/10

I am experiencing a malfunctioning number 1 spark plug for my 2001 mazda mpv dx.prior to the check engine light illuminating, the vehicle experiences serious hesitation when speeding up.i live near many railroad crossings and the hesitation is serious enough for me to question whether the vehicle will stop altogether.i have had the check engine light serviced three times.each time the dealer claims that the number 1 spark plug is cracked.the spark plug is covered by the standard warranty, so the dealer replaces it without question.i am concerned with the situation when my warranty runs out, soon, whether this problem will continue.replacing the spark plug is not a trivial task.i currently have 39,000 miles on the vehicle and have owned it for 2.5 years.the standard warranty is 3yrs/50,000miles.i would like a permanent solution to this problem, whether it be replacing the engine or vehicle itself.thank you.sincerely, robert plata

2001 mazda mpv with check engine light on. Consumer states that the mechanic stated that the coolant was leaking, oil filter and oil were changed.the dealership informed the consumer there was a crack in the engine block and the only fix was a new engine. The consumer stated the vehicle was maintained exclusively by the dealership from date of purchase. The consumer was told the crack was caused by overheating, but the temperature gauge needle never moved beyond halfway point to indicate there was a problem and the engine light never gave an overheating read out.

Dealer installed a rebuilt g4ael transmission and a rebuilt catalytic converter in a 2001 mazda mpv lx van on february 5, 2008. I purchased this van on march 26, 2008. I was not informed of the installation of the used parts in a van only seven years old. On may 11,2009, the van broke down while traveling. Two of the parts that need to be replaced again are the transmission and catalytic converter. The additional repairs needed is a used motor and headgasket. Major repairs which i can not have done on a car that lasted one year and fifteen days.the consumer reports notified me that the engine was underpowered until the 2002 upgrade to a 3.0 liter v-6 and a live-speed automatic. Now, the mazda mpv lx van was discontinued after the 2006 model year.i am without a car and my money. Mazda usa and the dealer have not helped me get transportation.

Dt: the consumer took his vehicle in for warranty work on the cruise control. The check engine light was on, so the dealer did a check and found the intake manifold was the problem. Consumer says that they recycled unused gas back through the intake to be burned, this caused carbon buildup. Thedealer said that the carbon buildup was too bad and could not be cleaned, part had to be replaced. Consumer had two other mechanics look at the part and they said they would clean the part and then put it back on. The consumer said the part read ford but the vehicle is a mazda. Consumer says that problem is the recycled unused gas going back into the intake; the consumer says that this is a design flaw. The consumer had the dealer put the new part on, then the consumer stopped payment on the credit card used to pay for service. The consumer contacted the manufacturer and was told there was no recall on this part. Consumer was told by dealer the part was only good for approximately 60,000 miles then it would need to be replaced again. Dealer told consumer that if he cleaned the part, it would only last for 20,000 miles. Consumer says that he doesn't know if it is his fault or the dealerships fault for trying to sell more parts. Consumer has doneresearch on carbon build up on the internet and has found that this is not the only intake with this problem. Consumer says that dealer told him that this is why mazda uses a different motor now. Consumer says that vehicle had a little bit of cut out once in a while, but he doesn't think he can really tell any difference inwith new the part.

Consumer stated that while driving, the engine light will come on unexpectedly where had contact dealer then fixed.nlm

Vehicle exhibiting oil leaking from engine, dealership replaced engine, within one week vehicle began to leak oil even more than before, consumer had problems with dealership repairing work in a timely fashion.

Engine has been leaking oil fromengine since date of purchase. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

Exhaust manifold started leaking causing the check engine light to turn on and a "ticking" sound after startup for the first few minutes.this occurred with 58k on the vehicle.

Terrible rotten egg smell coming inside the car as well at the exhaust pipe. Occurred since new, actually it has 11000 miles. Complain submitted to dealer and they denied responsibility and gave me service bulletin no 01-029/02 blaming to "high amounts of sulfur on fuel", smell causes nausea. *nlm

Purchased the car, drove it up a hill had a terrible egg smell seems to be every time i go up a hill. Took it back to the dealer they said it was the gas i was using. Took it to another garage and they say it the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. The dealer won't do anything the smell is very embarrassing.we bought this for a family car now no one wants to ride in it. Maybe that's why it's a 2001 and only has 12,000 miles on it.

The contact owns 2001 mazda mpv. While driving approximately 65 mph, the contact noticed smoke or steam around the vehicle. The contact was able to exit the highway and contacted aaa to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. The contact did not know what caused the failure. The transmission and catalytic converter were replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 112,954.updated 03/08/11 updated 05/24/11updated 12/20/11

Consumer complained abouta catalytic converter problem.catalytic converter was under warranty and was replaced twice within 1 year. Comsumer maintained that dealer was not doing what wasneeded to remedy the problem.dealership asked consumer to return the rental car although the catalytic converter problemwas not resolved.

Since we got the van it was a new vehicle and the engine light has consistently come on.the dealer tryed to tell us we were not tightening the gas cap.then it was we needed a new gas cap.you have to take it to the shop every time the light comes on.one mechanic stated it was an 02 sensor that was supposed to have been replaced after much hassle.now 10 days later the engine light is back on.the warranty is about to run out.

Fuel smell coming from air conditioner after start up

There is an occasional short in the headlight switch in my 2001 mazda mpv dx which results in the headlights not working unless i disassemble and clean the contacts.this has happened several times while driving the van and i now have to carry tools to fix it at any given time. We also try to avoid driving at night because of it. The plastic around them are burned and melted which is what caused the smoke.tonight when we were driving home the smell was there again as well as quite a bit of heat when you feel thesteering column then the headlights started fading off then back on again several times.we took it to mazda the other year and they wanted somewhere in the range of $3500 dollars to fix the issue.this is certainly a major safety issue and should be a recall in my opinion.i have seen on internet forums that this is not a isolated issue because other people have complained about it.and the cost to fix such a safety issue is ridiculously high.i worry that if the lights do not just go out that there may be a fire since things are obviously burning.

External plastic door handles on both sliding doors on 2001 mazda mpv have broken off while shutting door. Driver side handle has been broken 1 month.the passenger side broke on jan. 1, 2008.seems to be related to cold outside temperature.doors now must be opened with the inside handle.in the event of an accident, it would be difficult to get rear passengers out.since one side was operational until now, no attempt was made to take van to the dealer because of high cost to fix it.

The sliding doors (both) do not lock in place. If van is parked facing a downward slope, doors can accidentally close and crush whatever is in their path. All other minivans have sliding doors that lock when fully open. They will close only if the handle is pulled. This is not the case on the mazda mpv.

Mazda mpv's oxygen sensor bank2, sensor1 wire circuit burned up.have to replaced the oxygen sensor.there was no fire on my mpv but if i didn't have it fix fast it could cause fire.

While driving, the vehicle started to jerk back and forth, moments later the consumer was unable to put the gear into reverse.

The transmission of my 2001 mazda mpv se began to slip very badly in 3rd and there was no 4th gear after 100k miles.there were no warning signs and the 3 facilities that looked at the vehicle stated the fluid was fine and the transmission needed to be rebuilt or replaced for an average cost of $2500.00.on mechanic went on to say the mazda transmissions are notorious for problems and are among the worst in the industry.

The automatic transmission shift lever on the steering column could be freely shifted out of park with no keys in the ignition.transmission also would not shift out of park on occasion.dealer replaced shift control lever assembly free of charge.they stated the part had been redesigned by the manufacturer.

2001 mazda mpv van transmission quit at 150,000. I was told it already been replaced once . Wont shift pass second . Estimate cost repairs are $2599.00.

Transmission shifts violently during 1-2 shift during a brisk get away from a complete stop.the shift almost seems to stop the van's forward momentum and stall the engine.this occurs mainly when the car is cold.

While drivingengine surges upon trying to stopvehicle. Consumer contacted dealer. Problem was never resolved. Consumer tradedvehicle in. Please provide any further information.consumer stated the transmission was acting erractically.

My 2001 mazda mpv minivan began to shift hard and quick between gears.had the transmission fluid drained at 45k miles. The van has 74k right now and i feel mazda's design of this transmission is the culprit and not myself who takes good care of vehicle and have records to prove it.would like to have mazda rep. Explain to me his company's position of my complaint.

Parked a stop light with one van ahead of meseat belt that was hooked on the mechanism that controls the back of the drivers seat slipped off and threw the seat backwards, forcing me to take foot off brake and hit the car ahead of me and causing me ( by the force i was thrown back) severe headaches. No corrective action taken.

Seat belts lock and stay locked when in use.

I am disappointed with the mazda mpv 2001. The second row of seats come together if you want them to. When apart, the captains chair behind the driver's seat does not an armrest but the other captain chair does.i have never been in a van that did not have an armrest on both outside seats.it seems to me that this is a safety concernif you are in a spin out and need something to grab onto, there is nothing there in that seat.it is an automatic reaction to grab where the armrest should be.also, i am concerned about placing a child safety seat in that chair. If there is ever a side-impact, i feel that the arm rest might just be enough to keep the seat from sliding off due to the force of the crash. *nlm

Consumerhad taken vehicle to dealer twice for a recall 01v382000 repairs onbrake system.they could not fix itcorrectly, and consumer had to go back, but the problem could not be fixed.please provide more information.

Vehicle has trouble slowing down and even stopping.dealer replacedbrakes twice aleady, butproblem still occurs.

A bolt (mazda #10) holding the caliper assembly of the brake system fell off after only 280 miles of driving, less than 24 hours of ownership of the vehicle.the vehicle was driving at a residential area at low speed (25 miles/hr), otherwise a catastrophic results could have resulted in the interstate freeway.the vehicle's front-passenger side brake system locked the vehicle and the vehicle skidded (single-wheel locked) about 15 feet before a complete stop.driver has picked up the loose bolt from the road and presented to the nearest dealership service department.congressional mazda atrockville, md has inspected the brake system, secured caliper assembly and reinstalled the loose bolt.the vehicle owner was told that the loose bolt could have been caused by assembly failure at the factory.the duncan mazda at blacksburg, va (where the new vehicle purchased) has replaced the right front wheel and tire.the accident has caused the owner and his family to stay involuntarily out of town for 36 hours due to inability to obtain dealer services over the weekend days. Phone number of customer relations of mazda usa(800-222-5500) was very difficult to go through.after more than two hours oftrying, the case was orally reported to mazda usa on july 2, 2001.the case was again reported to david duncan, general manager of mazda dealer at blacksburg, va on july 3, 2001.

The contact owns a 2001 mazda mpv. The contact stated that a local mechanic performed routine maintenance on the vehicle and stated that the brakes never functioned properly. The recall repair, 01v382000 (service brakes, hydraulic: foundation components: hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) was related to the failure. The dealer did confirm that the recall repair had not been performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 125,000.

With no damage or scratch whatsoever to the front bumper and license plate of my 2001 mazda vanafter i hit a pole lightly in a parking lot, i found out that the reinforcement behind bumper was cracked open and the condenser and radiator assembly behind it was severely damaged. I wonder how this kind of damages to the reinforcement, condenser, and radiator could happened when i have no damage whatsoever to any outside parts. I wonder if the reinforcement had any inherent structural problem with a serious implication for the safety of the car. If you can investigate such situation and possibility, it would be much appreciated. I can provide pictures of the damages if required.

While driving on highway, traveling at 60-70 mph, and driving behind an 18 wheel truck, vehicle will become harder to control due to wind pressure. Contacted dealer, and the dealer is not willing to do anything.

I have a 2001 mazda mpv, bought in 2001 from dealer.now 5 years later,on the drivers side lower control arm, approximately 2 to 3 in. The front cup holders will fail to hold a drink when the vehicle makes tight turns.the cup holder uses an adjustable lever to hold the cup in place.this lever offers insufficient resistance to hold the cup securely.this failure can lead to drinks falling on the floor which can cause a safety hazard for the driver.mazda has redesigned the cup holder in the 2002 model, but has failed to offer the updated cup holder to previous model year vehicles. Transport canada has issued tc recall #: 2004376 for a safety-related defect.my wife andi were involved in three separate incidents involving an unexpected increase in stopping distances, nearly resulting in crashes!in sub-zero temperatures, (minus 25 degrees farenheit), i attempted to stop while approaching a line of vehicles stopped at a toll booth. My vehicle began slowing when i applied the brakes, but at an unexpectedly reduced and inadequate rate.my vehicle finally stopped virtually one inch from the stopped vehicle ahead of me at the toll booth!i relayed this experience to my wife.she then reported to me that on at least two occassions, she had similar vehicle stopping problems while driving locally.she clearly remembers exclaiming to my daughter (a passanger) at the time of one of those incidents:"we have no brakes!"both my wife and i are very experienced in driving in "winter conditions,"and believe the vehicle's behavior was markedly different from reduced stopping distances caused by poor winter road conditions.since the aforementioned problems mimicked partial 'brake failure,' i had a local garage check the brake system for any problems.also, while at the mazda dealership in so. Burlington, vt on feb. 11, 2005, i explained the stopping problem, and requested an examination of the vehicle.both noted that the brakes seemed to be working properly.since we: 1)operate same vehicle/ model/ and engine ;2)recurringly experience the identical driving conditions listed in the recall;and3)have experienced several near-accidents, i request that your office take action so that mandatory repairs of this aparent defect (a safety hazardin canada!)be implemented before winter set in again!mazda national customer assistance, at 1-800-222-5500,on june 7, 2005 responded that there is no us recall for this issue; the recall applies only to canadian vehicles.

Throttle pedal was sticking upon cold start.pedal had to be stepped on harder than usual upon start which then caused vehicle to surge forward.vehicle seemed fine after first push of pedal.dealer had to clean out carbon deposits.this has happened twice in past 2 years.worried that pedal would possibly stick while driving which would definitely be a safety issue. These deposits have occurred despite using techron gas additive.vehicle engine light has also come on many times in past - these also may have been due to carbon buildup.

When pulling off from a stop idle needle goes up to 3 rpms, and then drops to 1 rpm.there would bea loud metal to metal clinking noise when vehicle has shifted into reverse.driver took vehicle to a mechanic, andmechanic stated that motor valves were bad.please provide any further information.
