While driving the car on the expressway or anywhere for that matter the car engine light comes on and the "over drive off" light begins to blink and my overdrive turn off.i usually have to pull over to the shoulder or at a red light and turn the car off and back on to fix it.this is very unsafe and annoying because it happens almost everyday.i have to do this during rush hour on i-294 in chicago.i am reluctant to take it to mazda repair because they charge $100 just to take the car in the shop and they try to find little ways to slap on a bigger bill.i had them change my transmission fluid and a week later it leaked and they told me there was a hole in the transmission.apparently it was not there before the transmission fluid change and they did not notice it during.so i had them just refill it and i added sealant from auto zone.i checkedmy transmission fluid weekly and its just fine.engine light comes and goes at will.there seems to be a problem with the computer chip or something which is mazda's fault and i should not have to pay to replace or fix.everything on the car is stocked and i maintain the car better than mazda suggests.i check all fluids, oil change every 2000 miles, etc...i know thatmany people (thousands of them) that have the same problems with the engine lights and the "over drive off" light blinking.

I have a 96 626 that has 125,000 miles.i purchased my car in 98 with 60,000 miles.in may of 2000 i had to replace the oxygen sensor.i have also had to replace the left front axel and the right cv joint boot in feb. 2003.now i have replace my entire transmission which is going to cost around 2300.i had no indications that ihad transmission problems until it just quit.on my way to work my car just stopped moving on the interstate.when i pressed the accelerator it wouldn't pull.so i got off the road safely and attempted to see what the problem was.the car was not moving forward or backwards.i had to have it towed to the transmission shop to be told the wonderful news.i have been doing research and i'm finding this car has lots of problems. I am also having problems with oil leaking and occasionally the accelerator pedal appears to be hard to press as if it's stuck for a few minutes or it's real tight. I would not advise anyone to purchase a mazda.don't even take it if it's free because it would be cheaper to purchase a car.i realize my car has 125,000 miles but i had a nissan that i drove 180,000 miles for before major problems occurred.i'm filing this complaint in hopes something can be done because this is a major problem.

Engine failure.

Oil sending unit cracked, causing oil to drain out, resutling in a damaged engine, dealer replaced engine. Also, transmission became inoperative. Dealer could not determine what caused it.

Air intake system failed.

None of the first three problems were causing any safety hazards.the transmission failure made the shifting very jerky and rpm to go high. I did not try to experiment on this on the highway.driving a mazda is the worst experience of my life.never buy/lease or rent a mazda again.

Oxygen sensor failed.

Problems started in september 1999 with the mass air flow sensor coming unplugged. Had repair done, came loose again in october 1999. Dealer didn't run any diagnostics, just said the m.a.f.s. Was the problem. O/d light would blink while driving on highways. Car wouldn't shift into 2nd gear w/o a struggle. When overdrive went off, car wants to stay in 3rd gear.became jumpy and sluggish. Car won't shift into any gear. Just stays in neutral. Engine makes loud pinging noises when started and while idling. When coming off a complete stop, car struggles to get into 1st gear; when it finally goes, car jumps hard before driving.if there is any information about a lawsuit against mazda, i would like to be informed. I think all of the 626 drivers should nail mazda for all they've got!! why should we spend our $ to fix the problems they caused? please email me at [email protected] if there is any information on a lawsuit.angela & richard o'guinn.

I had many problems with this 626, mazda from the day i drove it off the lot and i tried to get the company to take it back and they would give me lots of excuses and were not helpful. In the end i was told the air flow sensor was gone & i paid300.00 for repairs. 2 days later the car started having the same problem and had it towed in and the transmission was gone, catalytic converter needed replacing again and another part. I asked for a refund on the mass air flow sensor telling them that the o/d light had been coming on and i think that was the problem, but would not refund me for the cost. They then wanted 6000.00 for it all and i told them, i have replaced so many parts on this car and tried to get you to take it back and they refused. I also asked if they would give me a credit towards another vehicle, since i was sold a lemon. They refused. I had to turn the car back in to the loan company. I could not afford to pay 6000.00 for repairs and pay 350.00 monthly . I was ahead on my payments too.turned it in to the loan company and now my credit has been affected. Because of all the costly repairs that i had to do and make payments along with it all. I want some help and restiution in this situation.

Check engine light came on - dealer says that if car is running okay that no service needed??????finally get it checked out and turns out that cat converter is going bad.barely get that repaired under warranty limit.same day, driving home from dealer, engine light comes back on.bring it back to dealer, they say air flow meter is also bad and needs to be replaced, but not covered under warranty.at least engine light stays off now.then, at only 78k, o/d light starts blinking along with check engine light.shop says that it's transmission (torque converter).why are so many of these units failing so early?only 78k on car, more than half of them are from pure hwy trips of 45 miles??????why isn't mazda doing anything for consumers about this?

Transmission is slipping badly in lower gears.shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd is very bad and often the rpms are approx. 5000 before the shift occurs. (even on a downhill slope)as of early november, the transmission will periodically not go into reverse.i have changed the transmission fluid on the recommended schedule of every 5k miles.dt

Mazda 626 transmission cd4e is faulty.why should mazda be allowed to get off scott free while thousands of consumers are suffering because of this?because it's not viewed as a safety issue?issue a recall on the cd4e transmission.there has never been a more clear case in need of a recall.

1996 mazda 626 with automatic transmission.the car has had what i consider early transmission failure.from what i have found out this is very common on this model and year mazda and was advised to file this complaint.

Transmission had big problems, even after using the car extremely carefully. Just had 57000 miles and had to get major repairs done to thetransmission.

Transmission had to be rebuilt.check engine light was on and the o/d light flashed.

Purchased the vehicle (1996 mazda 626) at 27,000mi on odometer - transmission had gone bad.because it was still in warrantee, the mazda dealership replaced the transmission. I took it back a few times over the past few years because of leaking transmission fluid and engine light being on.nothing was found or done.last december, at 96,000mi, the transmission burned out again.i took it to the dealership who said the transmission would have to be replaced again.this would be the 3rd transmission in under 100,000 miles!!as mazda would not assist in the cost of replacement, in july i had the car towed to a local mechanic who replaced the transmission with a rebuilt one.a few weeks ago (october 2004) the o/d light started blinkingand i took it back to the mechanic who replaced the transmission.he searched deeper and found that the cupholder is placed directly over the car's computer, and had been leaking any spilled fluid onto it, shorting out the overdrive, causing the transmission solonoid to burn out.he cleaned the computer and replaced the tcc solenoid, mazda takes no responsibility even though their technicians had the car several times without properly diagnosing the problem.

I bought a mazda 626 new in 1996 i drive the car twice a week... The car has about 60,000 miles on it.. The transmission went bad. And i was told it was a common problem with the car... I looked this up and there are hundreds of complaints about this problem... Please do something about this, as i do not have the $2500.. And 3 1/2 weeks it take to do this repair... I have to do it.. But i can not afford the time or money. I called mazda about it and they said it didn't matter that every mazda 626 they have sold has this problem.... Please look into this.

Transmission began whining and then failed at high speed going uphill.unable to stay in flow of traffic.very hazardous situation that nearly led to an accident due to sudden deceleration.mazda is unwilling to assist in any way at this point to remedy the problem.according to other owners even replaced transmissions are known to fail again.i am hesitant to repair the car because i am concerned it will put me and my family in a similar unsafe situation again.i really hope some pressure can be brought to bear on mazda to fix this problem before someone gets seriously injured or killed.

Transmission faliure at 72,000 miles, dealership replaced transmission before at 12,000 miles.my guess itwas cd4e transmission.

Have attempted numerous repairs of over $2,000, because mechanics could not identify the nature of the problem due to car speedometer frequently changing into over drive, and the car's mph never reaches 60 mph with out going into over drive.

There is an extremely high rate of transmission failure on the 4 cyl 626 and mazda needs to take care of their problem.

Overdrive light came on, and engine check light came on. This is the second time that theengine check light has come on, causing me to return the car to the dealer. The current problem is transmission.

Found out there is a known problem with the 626 trans, should be a recall, even replacment ones are defective

Engine warning light-service 3 times, transmission jerks-o/d light comes on, cannot locate problem-transmission is going out-must be replaced.

My car has a little less than 90,000 miles. Every time i drive this car for more than 30 miles or so, sometimes less if having to speed and slow often, my over drive light begins to flash which also makes the transmission shift erratically. If i pull over and restart the engine to stop the light from flashing and it begins to flash again shortly after my check engine light will also comes on. Normally after a week or so the check engine light will turn off by itself. My husband and i had the throttle body cleaned about a year ago thinking that was the problem when one day my car decided while sitting at a stop light that i could not keep an idle strong enough to keep the motor running and i then have had to start placing my car in neutral for stop lights and rev the engine while the light was red to keep from stalling. We have not replaced the transmission, though i am aware it should have been done long before now. We simply do not drive the car for more than 20 miles at a time. If we are going 30 miles or more, i have to stop half way to turn the engine off for several minutes to let the transmission rest. I feel that mazda has been completely irresponsible, unethical, and reckless in allowing loyal customers to continue to loose faith in mazda's quality of standards. I would assume that the loss in amount of profits and business for years of past and years to come would easily outweigh the damper to profits that would have resulted from doing the right thing and compensating mazda owners for the hard ships that have been caused by a much needed recall and lack there of.my husband and i now are in the market for a new vehicle, most likely an suv, and while mazda before now was our first vehicle make of choice, it will now not only be last but mazda will not be an option at all. As i assume others have come to the same terms, we will not place trust in a vehicle used to transport our children that we can not rely on for safety and dependability.

Drove the vehicle under normal operating conditions for 108,000 mile. Changed the transmission fluid at 100,000 miles. Transmission came apart at 108,000 miles. Had transmission rebuilt at a cost of $2600.00.

I bought a 1996 mazda 626 lx at approximately 82,000 miles the automatic transmission failed.i had rebuilt and now it is failing again.i cannot afford to keep fixing this problem that should have never been a problem to start with.the car has been well maintained under normal driving.i understand things will wear out but i have never had this problem with another car.i look on the internet for answers and find there are alot of people with the same complaint.mazda needs to offer some responsibility to this.people work hard for their money.no one can afford to keep fixing this problem.mazda should have never put a ford transmission in this car that couldn't last.

Transmission failed after owning the car for less than one month.it was covered under warranty, so the dealer replaced all parts and installed free of charge.they assured me at the dealer that this was a fluke, and that they had no knowledge of this being a problem in mazda 626, 1996 4-cylinder automatic transmission models.little did i know that less than one year later, the transmission would go out again, this time after warranty, and would face mazda corp. Stating that there is no problem with there transmissions, and that technically they don't have to do anythign to help me, but they would do me a favor by replacing the parts, but i would be responsible for the labor $545.00.i'm not even sure if this is a fair price for labor on installing a transmission.

I have a 1996 mazda 626 that is currently having transmission problems. This is now the second time i am about to have to have the transmission rebuilt. The first time was when i first got the car at 56,000 miles. I then paid for the repair, which cost me about $1600.00 at a transmission shop. Six months later, and after warranty, my transmission is what the mechanic would like to call "slipping" in second and third gear. This is now a concern to me, since my brother has the same car, and is now having to get his the same service done. I once went into a store, and a guy who had a mazda 626 came up to me and said nice car, have you got the transmission rebuilt yet. And also, my best friend who thought it would be cute if we got the same car, about a month ago was having transmission problems, and had to return the car, because it was such an expensive repair, and her car did not come with a warranty. I really don't believe that the car has had any other problems beside this transmission issue, and maybe it should have been recalled. It is really costly, and for me to have to pay for another repair, i don't think that i will be able to afford it. Please help me get started in trying to get this problem resolved. I have tried before to send them a complaint, but could not find any mailing information. I then decided to look deeper into the matter, and came across your web page, which is totally helpful. Please email me as soon as possible with any help that you may be able to offer. I will be so thankful.... If needed, i will also be willing to go around my city (oklahoma city) and find others with the same problem.

Second transmission in under one year.mazda will not admit to this being a problem that they are responsible for.meaning, they will not admit that this tranny should have last more than 19,000 miles. Do not consider it anything but coincidence that it has happened twice in under a year.the first time i was covered under warranty.this time i am not, and was told i should feel lucky that they are willing to honor the parts, but i need to pay for labor $545.00 they say is a fair price. I disagree. I have done some research on this make and model and have noticed that there are several people out there that have had the same problems.it appears that this tranny should be recalled and mazda will not admit it.they are being very un-ethical in my opinion.

Everytime i drive the overdrive light comes on and while driving it hesitste on freeyway icheck to the mechenic he say its transmission problem and it is the problem with mazada 626 and never been correctedand they didnt buil t it correctly so i thinkmazada should bring them back

I have a 96 mazda 626 that is having constant problems with the transmission.i had it checked out and am being told that it was the catalytic converter that would cost well over $400 because i needed the mazda branded one from a dealership.also the transmission switch is faulty.which the guy i had looking at the car, had no idea what that was and had never heard of it.when you start driving it's fine then about 15 minutes in to itstarts jumping like as if i am pressing on the gas to go 50 from 15.it has done this on several occasions and every time i try to fix it something else comes up.i was told by another person that the transmission is failing and that mazda 626's have a faulty transmission from years 95-00.

Problem with transmission when driven for more than 30 minutes.most transmission shops want me to rebuild it for about $1600, same as wilkins mazda dealership.one transmission shop says it could be a computer problem.either way mazda should pay to fix it.this has happened on almost all mazda 626 4cyl 2.0l transmissions from what i can see on the internet and from what i've heard from transmission shops.currently i can't even drive my car at 45 mph for over 15-20 minutes without having to pull over for at least ten minutes on the highway.i also have to drive on streets without shoulders so i just pull over in the right lane during rush hour thanks to ford's sleek design.it's really a competition to toyota's lexus and honda's accord and nissan's infinity...sike!!!

2nd transmission failure of car.happens at freeway speeds.in this case in traffic.

Faulty transmission

4th time in 6 years, od light starts flashing after driving for approx 1 hour on highway. Shifting is not with motor, temp remedy is to manual shift. If history repeats itself in approx 2,000 miles i will lose 1st gear if i continue to drive it that way in about 500 miles trans goes bye bye along with 1500-2000 george washington's. I love the way she handles but this is bullspit looking for a 99-01 lexus le anything.

Consumer has replacedtransmission 3 times, starting at 42,000 miles, and it was replaced under warranty. Overdrive light flashedon vehicle/ lostpower/started shifting and gave gas to accelerate, but it didn't help. Thesame sign each time, transmissionwent out.march 1999 90,000 & nov-2000 149,000; there was no warranty.it hascost $2400 for each replacement.

1996 mazda 626 overdrive light began flashing and transmission began shifting very rough. Turning car off and restarting cleared the problem temporarily, but it keeps recurring. A web search reveals this to be a very common problem that leads shortly to complete transmission failure.*

I have 1996 mazda 626 lx, 4 cylinder. At 100,000 (in 2004) transmission had to be replaced. I got new one with 30,000 miles on it. It lasted only 10,000 miles more. My friend with a mazda 626 from 1996 had the transmission replaced after only 50,000 miles.

The transmission on my 1996 mazda 626 failed at 75,000 miles.mazda dealers said they are not aware of any problems with the 1996 model 626.i replaced transmission at my own cost.

After buying the car (used) a year ago i first had to replace the 02 sensor, then while driving the o/d light would start flashing and the rpms went crazy between gears, after a restart it would go away only to do it again. This only lasted 2 days, so i thought it must not have been a big deal. Then this past weekend up in the mountains, it was driving fine until i came to a stop light, and the car would not go forward, i put it in the auto 1st gear then 2nd and it lurched forward only to go a mile before never moving again. It will cost $3,000 to replace.

Consumer stated the vehicle felt like it had gone into neutral on two occasions, and would not accelerate altogether on one occasion.consumer had to replace the transmission. Scc

O/d light started blinking, and check engine light came on - shifted out of gear continuously, transmission had to be replaced eventhough the car is only 5 years old.

Mazda 626 1996, od-off blinking, check engine light on.

"o/d off" light began flashing, engine check light came on.diagnosis is that a new transmission is needed.

I have a 96 mazda 626 and the car had 25,000 miles when it was purchased.i have had the transmission replaced 4 times totaling about 8,200 dollars. It is the notorious cd43 trans. The o/d light comes on then the transmission goes out. I always make sure that it has atrans.services done around 22,000 miles but this doesn't seem to matter. I would like for the mazda/ford corp. To fix this problem and recall this transmission so i will not have to pay this ridiculous price again. I really love this car and nothing else has ever went wrong with this car.

Transmission problem/ causing serious jerking movement to the car.a potentially very dangerous sitiuation for the driver and other motorists.this seems to be a reoccuring problem affecting transmission and linked parts ie. Axl. This seems to be happening quite frequently due to the complaints i have seen and heard.

Upon accelerating from a dead stop, car sometimes causes hard shift on gears 1 and 2.

This car has had nothing but transmission problems, as shown with mazda 626's (know after the fact)though on its second transmission, it is failing again.mazda states that they don't know why it failed, or what's wrong with it now.

Transmission failure due to overheating under normal driving conditions.

At 120k miles on my highly maintained 1996 mazda 626 my transmission failed. I did some research and many other customers have encountered the same situation with the same model car. Repairs will end up costing me $4000.00. As a college student it is going to be hard to come up with that type of money. I would suggest if there are as many failures as i have seen in the research a recall should be issued by mazda corp. Design flaws should be fixed by the designer or company, not by the consumer.

My transmission failed and was told by the dealer that it would cost $2,500 to fix the problems with the transmission.the diagnostic codes reported to me were p 1744 (tcc performance), p0741 (tcc stuck) and p0303 (#3 misfire).i have researched this problem on the internet and found that many have had the same problem and mazda does not accept blame for faulty transmissions.i was also told mazda did not rebuild transmissions but have read that some of the owners had them rebuilt.also, some had new ones put in but only to fail again and mazda did not cover the replacement part.it seems mazda should take responsibility for their faulty transmissions.i took mine to the dealer in the town in which i live - gary force mazda in bowling green, kentucky.

I had been having transmission problems with my 626 for several miles before my mileage rolled over to 50,000.i had taken the car to the dealership and reported problems with the dealer's reply being "we can't find anything wrong".finally i took it back again at 56,000 miles. The dealership then told me i needed a new transmission!after reporting this problem under warranty, they are telling me after the warranty expired that i needed to pay for a new transmission.i fought this and ended up getting mazda to pay for $2000 of the rebuilt transmission.the company should have replace the whole thing for free seeing as how i had reported the problem plus the fact that my car had only 56,000 miles on it.what kind of transmission goes out at 56,000 miles?from what i hear now, mazda 626s are notorious for transmission problems.i wish the mazda company would take some credit for putting cheap parts in their cars that consumers pay hard-earned money for...i won't buy another mazda.

Transmission failed at 63,000 miles just finding out how common this problem is with these vehicles. You might as well throw all your hard earned money into a fire pit and light it up, if you purchase one of these cars.

Transmission failed started to some on the hwy/worked on by aamco-failed again/work on by aamco again-failed again/work on by ammco again-aamco will not extend the warranty-please contact me

Transmission slips out of gear; lost gear at 70 mph on interstate 75

Transmission failed on my 1996 mazda 626 at 72,000 miles.right after reparis, o/d light flashes on extended trips.will drop out of od causing car to dangerously slow down.dealer is encouraging another transmission rebuild for another $2,500.this is absurd!

1. Transmission would not go into gear.2. Had vehicle towed to residence.3. Told that transmission has to be replaced.cost about $2500.

I bought a 1996 mazda 626 with 85,000 miles on it. I had a transmission tune-up done within a month of the purchase. Now, at 94,000m the transmission had to be repaired at costs exceeding $1500! the problem was said to be overheating of the transmission. Also, the o/d lights continue to flash after 15-20 of driving around.

Hi i have a 1996 mazda 626 lx and the o/d light just went off at 176,000 miles. I read several forums online and they all said its most likely a an electrical problem in the transmission. This can b very dangerous to us drivers as well as drivers next to us on the road. I advice to please have mazda recall all models with this problem and reimburse us or fix our transmissions at no cost. Thank you very much for reading my post.

As a result of a crash while traveling at 60 mphair bags did not deploy.consumer also states transmission went out and had to be rebuilt, the engine light stays on , cv joints are also faulty, also vehicle was in an accident consumer hit a deer.

Automatic transmission failure - driving my car on the highway and the transmission starts bucking and almost caused me to be hit in the back by another vehicle.

Standing while the car was in drive, when pressing on accelerator car would rev up but not move, then lurch forward suddenly while in traffic.forward clutch busted. Mazda transmissions are known problems, was told.

Since my 1996 mazda 626 purchase i've had 3 transmissions. The 1st breakdown happened on route 70 a highly traveled roadway my wife 7 months pregnant. This was the beginning of my transmission problems. However looking at most of thecomplaints, there seems to be serious mechanical problems and mazda should be held accountable.

Overdrive light flashes, engine light is on...all of it is linked to the transmission.it has already been rebuilt once and was told it will need rebuilt again.also the car idles very rough.

My over drive light has been blinking lately, and my wife two weeks ago had the light come on and stay on when returning from a trip on the interstate driving about 72 mph.at 121,000 miles and regular maintenance, my automatic transmission is about to completely fail in my 1996 mazda 626 lx.doing online research and talking with the specialty transmission shop, i have learned that the issue with the mazda transmission type cd4e is well known by the company and documented in numerous complaints, yet mazda has done nothing about it.i am lucky to have this many miles on the car, where others have failed much worse, but as a consumer that does not drive abusively and that regularly (every 30,000 miles) has the transmission fluid flushed and replaced and the filter serviced, this is an expense that is definitely not my fault.and given that the manufacturer has known about this since the mid 1990's, it is frustrating. I am now spending between $1500 and $1800 to get a rebuilt transmission put in my car, along with an atx cooler that mazda recommended in 2002 but did not cover under warranty or even provide an extended warranty to install.

Transmission replaced.

Low power output, then finally car will not accelerate. Have not repaired yet. Car still in my possession.burned up transmission fluid with three thousand miles of changing.

1996 mazda 626 transmission went out. The o/d light flashed and i immediatedly turned my vehicle off and on and the problem cleared up for a few minutes. Then the transmission stopped working as i was comimng down a steep hill. The event was very frightening but no one was hurt.

Second time automatic transmission failed!!!

None of the first three problems were causing any safety hazards.the transmission failure made the shifting very jerky and rpm to go high. I did not try to experiment on this on the highway.driving a mazda is the worst experience of my life.never buy/lease or rent a mazda again.

Check engine light came on.transmission hesitates between 1st and 2nd.diagnosed as transmission failure by mazda dealer. Dealer suggests replacing with rebuilt transmission for $2800.am currently researching other alternatives.

Transmission failure.

Consumer states transmission failed twiced while under warranty.dealer replaced transmission assembly 2 times.

On my 1996 my mazda 626 i was driving on the highway and my overdrive light started flashing. I researched the problem online and there was thousands of the same complaint i think is was a over drive solenoid or a sensor that control gear shifting. Apparently this happens to alot of mazda 626's and i think mazda need to be held accountable for this problem.

Consumer stated that while driving at any speed and without warninf the transmission will lock up and it will be hard to control the vehicle and the consumer will be forced to pull over. Dealer notified. Ts

Transmission seal leaking.

The consumer stated that the transmissionmalfunctioned. The only gear that was responsive was reverse.*sc

I own a 1996 mazda 626 the manufacutre refused to admit that there is a defect in the design of the transmisson.it failed while driving the vehicle at the posted city speed limit.could have caused aserious crash.

Vehicle experienced a transmission blowout while accelerating from a stop position. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was out of its warranty, and nothing would be done.feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

After repeated attempts to get the transmission checked it finally failed. Every previous attempt resulted in no problems diagnosed. It was always a sensor or a connector. The problem with the o/d light was brought to the attention of the dealer and everytime the car came back in two to three days the light would come back on. The problems started in the summer of 2001 and the service was in august. Now the transmission is gone and needs to be replaced after being diagnosed o.k.. In 3 1/2 months a perfectly good transmission goes bad?

While driving the vehicle on the highway, the o/d was blinking on and off. In addition, the car became very sluggish and would not accelerate properly causing the car to slow down below normal highway speeds. We took the car and the dealer said they would flush the transmission and the problem might go away. They said if it re-occurred the transmission would have to be changed out. The o/d light started blinking again after another several thousand miles. We have had several transmission shops say the transmision will have to be rebuilt or replaced. They, including a mazda dealer, have confirmed that cars with this transmission (e.g. Mazda 626 and ford contour) frequently have this problem and that it will likely re-occur after the transmission is rebuilt/repaired. It is completely unsatisfactory that these tranmissions fail as early and frequently as they do. I contacted a dealership as well as the mazda customer assistance hotline and was told mazda would do nothing about this problem as it is out of warranty. Why isn't anything being done about this with mazda?

Mazda 1996 626 automatic transmission horror story here! why is the nhtsa.dot not forcing mazda to recall or pay damages to the hundreds and hundreds of folks like me who are out thousands for repeated transmission failures? bought used car from transmission shop owner 2 years ago now. He warranted transmission (claimed "new") one year. This itself shows transmission was failed and replaced once already.brought it in twice under warranty, told me "he didn't know what work was done because mechanic was not in that day". For all i know, he did nothing and waited until warranty lapsed on purpose. Now after warranty on transmission completely failed. Fluid was black sign of burning. Only 2nd year from purchase now, expensive price. Unmatching ford transmission has different liquid/pressure specs which do not match mazda engine specs. This is how mazda is selling it, the two parts don't work together. This is why even the "rebuilds" and "replacements" still fail 1-2 years.(ridiculous!!!!)the website www.carreviews.com contains hundreds of similar horror stories about this transmission on this model, all automatic. Exploding transmission fluid on my way home from repair/replace, failing at only 100 miles on brand new mazda for another new buyer!!!!, 3-4-5 replacements per consumer in 2-3 years is the most typical complaint!!! this is outrageous that you have done nothing to punish them< they know all about it!!!!! why is there no investigation in your investigations page?

I had the transmission replaced at 50000 miles and the mazda dealership replaced it and charged me a labor charge of 700. Now, my transmission is out again at 108,00 miles. While i was driving on the expressway at 60mph.

Transmission initially shifted roughly then revved during shifting 3-4, then a loud bang during braking quickly, this progressed to lurching forward after braking, then popping noises in low gear when accelerating from stop or at speeds less than 40 mph. An independent transmission repair shop said that chain inside trans is slipping off sprockets - repair estimated at $950-1150. Have appointment with dealership to get an estimate on transmission work.the enginecheck comes on and stays on for weeks at a time. This initially started at about 1000 miles and has continued to occur. Dealership has made repairs and adjustments under new vehicle warranty, and according to recall advisements and each time says that should fix it, but it continues even today. The vehicle is now out of warranty.

Transmission failure.

1996 mazda 626 transmission problems i.e.od light flashing when car is driven at speed of 65 mph.car must be stopped, shut off, and restarted to correct the problem, otherwise once speed is decreased the car shifts erratically.in a two hour car trip, i may have to restart car 3 or 4 times or drive under 60 at all times.i've seen several complaints on the web regarding this problem and the major costs to repair, so i just don't drive my car any long distances and haven't for years!don't understand why mazda isn't recalling if they know it's such a widespread problem.i worry that because i have to drive slow, i'll get rear-ended on the expressway by someone going the speed limit!!

Automatic transmission completely went out while driving during rush hour on a major freeway. Was towed to the dealer who said a new transmission was needed. The car only has 68000 miles on it. Was then towed to a transmission shop who did the work for a lot less then the dealer.

Transmission problems with 1996 mazda 626:mazda has a very high failure rate on the automatic transmissions in the mazda 626 vehicles.my car is on the second transmission and probably needs a third.i beleive that mazda should fix the problem without cost to the owner.thanks for listeninggary

The automatic transmission in my 1996 mazda 626 failed.as i did research i found that the transmission had failed once before with a previous owner.further research has shown me that the "cd4e" transmission in my car is a "known" defective part among owners of this particular car.i only had enough money to have it replaced with a used transmission that was the same "cd4e" and can only hope that this one will hold up for awhile.the total cost was about $1200 and i still have the old transmission just in case i need to have it rebuilt.this particular transmission is very hard to find due to its unreliability, meaning they are in great demand because they fail frequently.thank you for your time.

Im a used car dealer and i sell mazda 626's 1996 to 1999 the transmission seems to keep going out i replaced them and they go out again. This is costing me money and my customers.

Am the owner of mazda 626, vin 1yvge22c3t5518155.i bought this vehicle new in august 1996 from the rosenthal nissan mazda dealership located in mclean, va.since the purchase i have had 3 failures of the automatic transmission system.first failure occurred at ~38,000 miles.the second at ~49,000 miles and the third at ~86000 miles.first two transmissions were replaced by the dealership.presently i am looking for mazda to replace the current transmission free of cost to me and provide me a 5 year warranty on the transmission system.i feel that my car has an inherent manufacturing defect which is causing the automatic transmission to fail repeatedly.such failures of transmission can be very risky while driving on highways.my recent transmission failure occurred while i was on the highway at 65 mph.i felt a sudden jerk and the car slowed down extremely rapidly.the car in the back almost hit me.i had to react very quickly and had to quickly move to the left side of the highway - as with this rapid and sudden deceleration i did not even have time to go the right side.mazda's continuing inefficiency in this matter has created a public safety hazard.i would like some assurance that this will be taken care of appropriately.

Over drive light flashing - overheating - internal failure of transmission.

Transmission on a used mazda 626 4 cylinder. (1996) failed at 112k miles. Bought car used at 108k miles, god knows how many times it was replaced before we bought it.

Transmission problem with 1996 mazda 626-i bought the car (a demonstrator) from allentown mazda in allentown pa. On may15, 1997 with 10,000 miles on it. I stopped at a light 2 miles before i was about to get onto onto the ne extension of the pa turnpike. As i pulled out, the car barely picked up enough speed tomake the turn and i pulled to the side of the road. Although the engine revved, the car wouldn't move. I had the car towed to a garage where they told me the transmission had failed - at 56,000 miles! i had a rebuilt transmission put into it for $2000. There is now 86,000 on the car and i am having trouble with the car shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear and i am afraid, after reading about everyone else's problems with this car that it is the transmission again. My engine light has also been on continuously, almost from the time i bought it. No one has been able to fix it. I understand this has also been a common problem with this model and year and would like to add my name to the list of dis-satisfied mazda owners who would like to make mazda accountable in some way for these expensive, dangerous, and chronic problems.

No information in owners manual regarding o/d flashing on dash.

Transmission failed without warning. It was replaced three times; however, the problem still exists. *mr

Bought the mazda (i hate the car now) from a private owner who had maintained the car very well (had all the maintenance records) at 70,000 miles. The transmission broke down after 2 weeks. Repair shop said they have to replace/rebuild the transmission. Cost $2100.00. Researched the internet and found mostly all mazda cars have this problem. Nothing is being done. Somebody should take serious action because it poses serious safety concerns because it could lead to accidents and deaths.

Car was purchased with 15,000 miles. I have had these problems with the car and i would like for these things to be investigated. I know of 4 other people who have had some of these same problems with their 1996 626.

In december, 1998 our check engine light came on and the overdrive light started to flash after our 626 was driven at 65+ mph for 10-15 minutes.after the check engine light came on, the transmission started shifting erratically at low speeds.the problem was mis-identified by a service technician as dirty transmission fluid and subsequently diagnosed as having a faulty transmission.the transmission had to be replaced.we originally purchased the vehicle at polar mazda in white bear lake, mn where the automatic transmission was replaced.

My trasmision went out going up a mountain on hwy 299, i have only had this car for 11 months & have already had to replace the water pump, heater switch, timing belt, brakes, tires...what do i do now?i still have 2 years left on my loan & can't afford a new transmission or a new car!!

Engine checklight stays on. The brake calipers andcatalytic converterwere replaced. Also transmission problems. Dealer contacted and aware of the problems. Repairs that have been made were at owner'sexpense. Provide further information.

Consumer states while driving 60mph the transmission failed causing the vehicle to lose acceleration. Please provide any additional information. Ts

I am the original owner of a 1996 mazda 626. I have already replaced my transmission 3 times in 8 years and looking at replacing it again for a 4th time. The car only has 150k miles on it. The transmission only lasts anywhere from 30k-40k before it goes out. I have contacted mazda and they basically turn their shoulders. I have already spent double what i originally paid for the car. I would be helpful if mazda would acknowledge that they have a serious transmission issue.

Owner indicates that automatic transmission shifts hard with o/d light coming on/off.dealer insists that entire transmission needs to be replaced.please describe details.

Overdrive light flashed. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated thattransmission failed.please provide any further information.

While shifting vehicle failed to move on its own.a loud knocking noise was heard coming from the front. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanicdetermined that the shaft solenoidneeded to be replaced.

This model year 626 have bad transmission i never seen so many trans. Being replace on one model cardo we have to wait for people to die before something is done. Is that what when it came to firestoneand fordi hope you will look in to this before then all you have to do is get the information from mazda and you will see. People saving peoplelet's try and do it befor they die.

Automatic transmission failed.nlm

Over drive light keeps blinking, replaced transmission two time and car o/d light still blinks, transmission about to go out again!!!!

Let me begin by saying that i wish i had pulled up this web site before i purchased this automobile. Apparently, other consumers have voiced their many complaints to no avail, so please forgive me if i sound a bit let down and disappointed by this great department of our american government.mainly, your just wanting me to state the problem, and i say, the problem has already been stated, over and over again.but, if i must keep up this ridiculous game of play for many more years or until a person is killed, i will.the #### transmissions ####in this ##### ### mazda 626, you have been told, the manufacture knows, the people that have been ######over by the corporation of ####### greedy ### ##### men know it, so lets just say we hold your pay check until you can get off your ###### ### and get use some relief with this multi-million dollar corp that is not stepping up to the plate and taking care of the ####### lemons they sold on american soil.i believe this will be resolved, i have a 16 year old that i purchased this car for and i am not going to keep quite about this. You can see this is clearly a problem that should have already been fixed, and not at the consumers expense. I am a divorced-single mom that has not received child support in six years, i manage on my own and will not let big corps take my hard earned money to repair something that is crystal clear a defect on the makers part....that being mazda corporation. If my child's safety is as important to you as you want me to believe it is, then do the #### recall already. Time to make things right.

Transmission problems - 1996 mazda 626 - which mazda has known about for over 10 years

Transmission failure.

While driving the vehicle the transmission broke.

I have a mazda 1996 626 lx sedan 2.0 liter engine with automatic transmission, 4 cylinder, front wheel drive. I bought it from a private party about 3 months ago at 93400 miles. I now have only about 96000 mikes and my transmission failed today. I was not able to get it out of the overnight parking spot in my apartment complex. I had it towed to a mechanic(a very reliable one), who after an extensive checkup, determined that the transmission had "broken down" and that it had to be replaced. He informed that a new transmission replacement inclusive of installation charges would cost about $2500 to $3000, which is extremely expensive for a full-time graduate student like me. I performed my research on the advice of the mechanic and came across a lot of people who have had problems with the automatic transmissions of mazda 626 manufactured between 93-97. This is frustrating because, ford (ford probe is the transmission used in the above said vehicles) and mazda are aware of this matter and have never found it so much as being responsible to make their customers aware of these problems. I want justice to be done and i would very much love ford and mazda for being so askance in this matter. I also want all the owners of the mazda vehicles involved in changing theor transmissions to be compensated adequately. But more than that, i want federal agencies to be aware of these evasive tactics of mazda and ford and punitive damages arising from federal case to be so inhibitive as to almost shut off their operations.

Transmission had to be replaced at 50000 miles.

Transmission beginning to fail.broke down numerous times on a long drive late at night.

The o/d off light on vehicle flashes.i now understand that this is a common problem that is known to mazda.mazda should take responsibility and recall the transmission in these vehicles.this vehicle is used by my kids for transportation to and from school.they are at risk.

My 1996 mazda which i purchased in 1997 has serious transmission problems.the transmission has been replaced once while still under warrantyin 1-11-99. It is currently at the dealer for a second transmission which failed on 12-29-99. I am confused as to why with so many complaints about the transmission problems with mazda they have not been recalled. I have read atleast 173 complaints on the internet submitted by others. Also is there a technical bulletinrelated to this transmission problem that has been distributed to dealers? what is it going to take for this car to get a recall deaths?

Please hlep me with this.the car is no longer driveable and i am still paying on it.what do i do?.

Problems with the automatic transmission.original transmission started to fail at 45,000.finally was unable to drive the car at 84,000.mazda dealer replaced transmission with rebuilt transmission which failed at 86,000 (only two months in service).next transmission has 11,000 miles on it and it is beginning to fail.i will be bringing it back to mazda in june 2005 (still in warranty 12k/12 months).

While driving had transmission failure. Unable drive vehicle. Replaced transmission 4 times.

Transmission was slipping and fuel was leaking. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer, anddealer told him that transmission failed, and itneeded to be repaired.conumer stated that dealer told him it would cost approximately $3000.00.consumer wasconcerned because hedid not have that many miles onvehicle.also, check engine light cameon and stayed on.

Purchase auto used with less 48,255 miles on it on 5/1/98. On 5/22/98 the check engine light along with the srs light began burning intermittently. Part was ordered on 5/22/98 and replaced on 6/6/98. Problem still existed and was worked on again 6/10/98. Didn't repair problem and so it was again worked on 6/18/98. Dealer's statement is the car was driven over 100 miles and problem couldn't be found. Something must have repaired it as they stopped burning. On 1/13/99 engine light began again along with the od light. At this time auto was returned to dealer who replaced the transmission. Luckily i purchased a warranty at purchase of auto. At this writing the engine light has begain to illuminate again and my wife state transmissions is slow to shift. I am beginning to think that this particular year mazda was one which would hurt mazda's reputation after owning 2 mazda 626s and 3 mazda pickups. I have the statements from dealer where they replaced the computer, sensors, modules, and controls.the auto stock number at andy jones was 8992 @ dealer# 34018 sold may 1,1998.

While traveling noticed overdrive indication light flashing. Consumer had vehicle serviced, technician noticed that transmission needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.

The o/d light starts blinking after a short time.the transmission then ceases using the converter lockup on the trans as evidenced by the rpms going up.when you stop and kill the engine it will "reset".the transmission will also shudder at times like it si in two gears at once.the transmission also is erratic in shifting--it shifts slow and weak and then hard and quick--like the line pressure is varying.

While drivingvehicle start jerking over 50 mph and speed could drop on the freeway where transmission/overdrive light will start flashing.

First my transmission was slipping now the od light flashes when i drive on the thruway or any situation where im goin 50mph or more i have owned the car for less than a year

October 2003 79,500 miles od light blinking, rough idle, sticky hard gas pedal, remedy : new transmission, idle control valve 80,000 miles transmission failure no warning lost 2nd, 3rd,4th gear. Remedy: rebuilt transmission was told part failed. Picked up car on feb 17th drove car for 5 miles 2nd and 3rd, gear blown again.

My 1996 mazda 626 lx has 86k miles on it.i noticed a couple of months ago, it was leaking fluid (i thought it was oil), but it turned out to be transmission fluid, so i made an appointment to have it fixed.my car was finally fixed after almost 2-weeks in the shop and without a vehicle to drive.a couple weeks after having it repaired, and costing me $2,000 - i noticed that it is still leaking transmission fluid.my car gave me no warning (no lights ever came on saying there was a problem).now, i am reading about thousands of other mazda 626 owners having the same problem.

Status of recall on 1996 mazda 626.*mr consumer inquired as to the status of getting the vehicle recalled for the transmission.*ph

My 1996 mazda 626 transmission burned up approximately 100 miles into a road trip to houston. The transmission had been rebuilt in dec 2001 and only had 11,000 miles put on since the repair. I brought the car to a mechanic in houston who said the transmission would have to be replaced, at around $2200. I called my dealer in austin and was told to bring the car back to them and if the transmission was failing we would contact mazda and maybe they would work with me on the cost. I had the car towed back to austin and left it at the dealer.the next morning the service writer calls to tell me all my transmission needed was a "cooler" installed and i would be good to go. Although i felt this could not be anything but a band-aid, i paid for the repair and went on my way. I decided to do some research and found countless stories similar to mine on the internet. Mazda was aware of this transmission problem when the transmission was rebuilt and should have offered me the cooler then. I did complain to the general manager of the dealer and he reimbursed me for the cooler. My purpose in filing this complaint is just to get the word out there about these crummy transmissions. I used to believe mazdas were reliable, safe cars but my confidence has been shaken. I plan to sell the car and buy another kind of vehicle just for peace of mind.

Bad transmission in this model of car. I'm simply entering my complaint so mazda might have to take action for those unfortunate customers who will be next in repacing their transmissions. Mazda should be held responsible for the mistake they made with these transmissions.

While driving 65mph and pressing gas pedal, vehicle fails to accelerate. Rpms go up to 5000 to 6000. Vehicle would slip from drive to neutral on its own. Had 3 transmissions replaced, and problem still exists.jlg

While driving at any speed, there was a problem when shifting into over drive.the over drive light flashed constantly, which caused the check engine light to come on.the dealer found that a new transmission was needed.the manufacturer was not aware of the problem.*sc

Hi i have a 1996 mazda 626 lx and the o/d light just went off at 167,000 miles. I read several forums online and they all said its most likely a an electrical problem in the transmission. This can be very dangerous to us drivers as well as drivers next to us on the road. I advice to please have mazda recall all models with this problem and reimburse us or fix our transmissions at no cost. Thank you very much for reading my post.

Transmission-- bearing inside broke intwo

While drivingvehicle started to slow down and lose power.sometimes, vehiclewould go out without a prior warning.manufacturer could not find out what caused this problem three times.

Last friday my transmission failed on my 1996 mazda 626 at 55mph on the taconic state parkway. While i was driving and pressingon the gas pedal, the engine did nothing but rev, the o/d light began flashing and i the car slowly came to a stop.i was able to pull over to the side of the road, and i tried putting the car in reverse, 1st and 2nd gear and still nothing, it was just like the car was in neutral.i called a tow truck and was towed to the nearest service station where i was informed that the transmission was "gone".the car has only 83,000 miles and has been serviced regularly at the mazda dealer, the car now needs a new transmission. The car has only 83,000 miles and has been serviced regularly at the mazda dealer since1996, i am the orignal owner.i have heard that this is a common problem with the 4 cylinder transmission and think that mazda should be forced to do something about it.one mazda dealer wanted $2500 to replace the transmission, another wanted $4300.i found an auto repair shop that will do it for $1800.i need the car so i am forced to pay this now as i have no other mode of transportation.i hope that this complaint adds to the ammunition of forcing mazda to realize that this tranmission should have been recalled a while back and that they should reimburse those who have been forced to hand over $2000 to fix something that should not fail on a car this young with less than 100,000 miles.anything that you can do to assist me witht his problem will be greatly appreciated.thank you for your time.sincerely, jennifer pace.

Transmission failed at 98k miles.neede to be replaced.

1996 mazda 626 o/d light flashing and transmission not shifting.

1996 mazda 626.

Transmission problems in 1996 mazda 626 .

The transmission has again failed at 127000 miles.we have also had numerous other problems caused by the transmission failure.we have all dates and receipts.

Overdrive light andengine check light remain illuminated, indicating a malfunction within the system. Dealer cannot determine the cause. Please give any further details.

"o/d off" light began flashing, engine revved and would not shift from 1st gear. Diagnosis is that a new transmission is needed at the cost of $2300.00.

Am the owner of mazda 626, vin [xxx].i bought this vehicle new in august 1996 from the rosenthal nissan mazda dealership located in mclean, va.since the purchase i have had 3 failures of the automatic transmission system.first failure occurred at ~38,000 miles.the second at ~49,000 miles and the third at ~86000 miles.first two transmissions were replaced by the dealership.presently i am looking for mazda to replace the current transmission free of cost to me and provide me a 5 year warranty on the transmission system.i feel that my car has an inherent manufacturing defect which is causing the automatic transmission to fail repeatedly.such failures of transmission can be very risky while driving on highways.my recent transmission failure occurred while i was on the highway at 65 mph.i felt a sudden jerk and the car slowed down extremely rapidly.the car in the back almost hit me.i had to react very quickly and had to quickly move to the left side of the highway - as with this rapid and sudden deceleration i did not even have time to go the right side.mazda's continuing inefficiency in this matter has created a public safety hazard.i would like some assurance that this will be taken care of appropriately.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Transmission problem with a automatic 1996 mazda 626 2.0 liter 4 cyl. We bought the car with something wrong with the transmission but we didn't know what exactly what the problem was. So we bring it home and it wouldn't go into gear so we decide we have to rebuild the transmission. We get on the internet and search for any recalls on the tranny or the car and on some websites we found that the tranny is too small for that particular make of car and it tends to overheat and found a tsb that said the car needed a tranny cooling system b/c when it would overheat it would just crash, and we also saw that a lot of people were having this same problem and that they have had their tranny replaced 2 or 3 times b/c of the overheating, and i would love to know that mazda would stand by their product and help everyone out that is having this problem b/c we think this should have been done right the first time.

Transmission failed on 1996 mazda 626.replaced with used transmission that also failed within 3 months.

My car has 79,170 miles on it.i borrowed money & worked 2 jobs to make the pymt.i was okay with that b/c i thought i purchased a dependable & reliable car. Two years ago w/o warning, while sitting at a stoplight, my car lunged forward.i called my dealership, & had the car serviced. It wasnt diagnosed that i had trans. Problems til i was traveling down a busy hwy. In early morning rush hour traffic, that my car lunged forward again & lost almost 50% of its power.in an instant my car went from traveling at 70+ miles per hour to 40 miles per hour.i lost my entire trans. At 57,000 miles.mazda corp. Helped that time.i paid $700 for labor, mazda picked up the rest.note i had already paid @ $1300 in other repairs.two years & 22,000 miles later i am facing the same problem again.i was traveling for the christmas holiday.about an hour into my trip, my overdrive light flashed off & my car downshifted by 20 miles.when i returned home, i took it to the dealership again.after the 2nd visit & my persistence to dig for the true problem, the news from mazda corp. Is trans. Failure & its my problem.as i listen to other non- mazda car owners, saying their cars have close to 200,000 miles on them with little or no problems, i am hurt, disappointed & frustrated to know my car will never make it.i am being forced to buy another vehicle that i had no plans to buy for a few more years.i am now going have to take a hard financial hit b/c mazda corp. Built a car with repeated trans. Failures, & they will not help their cust. When it fails more than one time.they should replace the trans. Free of charge; labor included, & tell the cust. The fix will not last.i trusted mazda corp. To build a reliable, dependable & safe vehicle.what i have is a car with trans. Failures that has nearly cost me my life, & is putting in me in debt.this has got to be legally wrong, & i know its morally wrong.i want monetary restitution for this unnecessary burden.

1996 mazda 626 lx was purchased used in 8/99 as certified pre-owned vehicle with 32k miles. Vehicle was in accelent condition, and came with a 3 month, 3k warranty. Vehicle meticulously maintained by (me) current owner with all suggested service done at mazda dealership. I have put only 20k miles on it in 3 years, mostly intercity driving. On 6/06/02 with only 53k miles on it, the transmission failed- absolutely no warning. Car towed to aaa certified repair shop. Diagnosis: (obviously) failed transmission. Repairs not covered by warranty; madza usa c. S. Indifferent, unsympathetic, scripted response. At cost of $2,900 transmission replaced (6/7/02). Driving car back from repair shop (6/16/02), transmission failed again, complete with flashing o/d light. Now need to replace the 'replacement' (2nd) transmission. All research on web indicates this transmission (ford cd4e ) is chronically failing. Replacement transmissions flashing o/d light, and failure to shift is common, chronic reported problem. High volume of failure at relatively low mileage. Numerous cases of 2nd and 3rd rebuild failing as well. Transmissions obviously defective. Transmission should not be failing at such low mileage. Manufacturer is aware of problem.manufacturer recall should be aggressively pursued.

I brought a 1996 mazda 626 used from a car lot saturday march 24,2007 and the transmission went out the next day . I found this forum that talked about this problem after i purchased the vehicle. I just feel like something should be done about this problem.

Faulty component causes low pump volume in transmission, which ultimately leads to overheating and transmission failure.vehicle has literally come to a stop on the interstate, causing drivers to evade hitting my car.

While driving vehicle just stalled out without warning. Had vehicle serviced andtransimission had blownout.dealer stated this was a common problem.

Check engine light came on.reached the interstate exit and the transmission was gone.engine was still running, but would not accelerate.garage stated that 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears were gone.mazda refuses to admit that there is a problem with this transmission and they will not help with the repairs because they were done by an independent garage.after researching this it appears that 626's from 1994-96 (4 cyl auto) have this problem in common.will there be a formal investiagation?

Consumer has been having trouble with transmission. Usually when changing gears .

My 1996 mazda 626 had transmission failure, it failed without warning, while driving.i contacted mazda and ford and was told that transmission failure was common with that model transmission and vehicle.i was also told that any repair of the transmission would be at my expense.i had the transmission repaired, to be correct it was rebuilt.my concern is that if ford and mazda know that there or problems with these transmissions why don't they extend warranties and inform there customers.secondly why hasn't the federal government stepped in and forced them to take corrective action.my parents on a honda accord, honda has admitted that they have a problem with their v6 transmissions, my parents car had problems after 50,000 miles.honda replaced their transmission with and updated one and extended the transmission warranty for an additional 100,000 mile after the repair.i feel that ford and mazda should do the same thing.with your help i hope that will happen.

Transmission broke while driving which caused vehicle to stall unexpectedly.itcouldhave resulted in a crash.

Transmission needed to be replaced because when consumer was driving vehicle stalled out. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.

Fourth gear failure- damaged internal structure of the transmission. Experienced hesitation and overreving of the engine just prior to transmission failure.

I have a 4 cyl 1996 mazda 626 automatic. A few days ago my transmission went out. Every mechanic i have spoken to including aamco, the renowned transmission place tells me that this model always had a design flaw in transmission. All mazda owner forums are full of complaints about transmission issue on that year car.i have contacted mazda corporation with no avail. What is next??

Transmission is failing.this is the second transmission put in this vehicle.it causes the car to hesitate in traffic and overheats.this is the second 626 i have owned.transmission went in first one as well, causing the car to stall in the middle of traffic.how safe is that?http://www.estreetjournal.com/mazda.htmplease read that.this is one of many experiences that show just how dangerous ford's faulty transmission is.you have recieved hundreds of complaints on this.and there are thousands that you have not received.when is someone finally going to step up and take responsibility for this????mazda informed me that they would take no action unless highway safetly deemed their porblem a hazard.

I have had the transmission replaced in my 1996 mazda 626 and now the 2nd one is failing at 85,000 miles (i replaced the first one for $2500 at about 50,000 miles).

1996 mazda 626 4 cyl with cd4e auto transmission & 110,000 miles.the transo/d lock light will start to blink. The trans will start to upshift hard and downshift for no reason. The dealer advised the transmission must be replaced.

Major transmission problems over the past 3 years with 1996 mazda 626, currently at 89,000 miles.

The transmission has not actually failed to a point where it is not driveable, but i have had to replace several parts of the engine to get it narrowed down and now the overdrive light constantly flashes and after some research(the owners manual has none) i have come to discover that the transmission is failing and more than likely on its last leg and from what i have gathered it costs approximately $3000.00 to have it repaired i am not pleased, but i have been advised to file a complaint so that hopefully one day mazda will have to do a product recall for using inferior components. Call me a sucker, but we will never own any "ford" product again. Do the terms "found on road dead" and "fixed or repaired daily come to mind"? so far i have put about $600 into the car just to replace sensors so that the motor is running correctly only to discover that the transmission is almost shot too.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

O/d light flashes and the transmission fails to work properly. Have been using mazda for the last 8 years. My o/d light has started blinking about a year ago. I took it to a local repair shop and got it fixed. The light has blinked continually every month. I have already spent a lot of money on issues with maza.after reading complaints on the net i discovered that there are 1000's of people with the same issue. I think mazda should recall the cars and fix this issue.i will think twice before buying aznother mazda.

Without warning the car started driving very sluggish in 1st gear (not going any higher than 5 m.p.h.), but would drive normal in all other gears.i took it to the shop immediately (same day), and they said that i needed a new transmission (rebuilt) and quoted me $2,300.i took it from the dealer the next day to take it to another trans shop for quote, & after 20 miles it wouldn't drive in any gear except reverse.aamco quoted me >$2,000 + said it may be the computer box also.this car is too new to have a transmission problem, something needs to be done.of course the dealer is not willing to pay because it's no longer under warranty.this seems to be an ongoing problem with this car, when will something be done about it??????????????

Car seemed to drag, became very sluggish and rough, made roaring noise, smoke came from axle area, transmission fluid began leaking. Found out differential was messed up, needed replacement--two months after transmission and axle replaced (filed earlier c

Transmission prematurely failed. Also therewas no maintenance schedule for transmission, and no warning instructions writteninowners manual about what to do whenoverdrive button illuminates.

While driving and without warning the transmission shifted out of gear but still indicated that it was still in drive on the gear panel.

While drivingvehicle it starting shaking and went dead. Vehiclewas driven to a bodyshop in first gear.vehicle was only driveable in first gear and reverse, and then only reverse.transmission was replaced at owner's expense. Mazda was contacted about this problem. Consumer was told to contact ford because the motor was made by ford.ford was contacted, but did not help consumer. Please provide any further information.

Transmission failure.

Transmission failed at traffic signal.o/d light flashing, transmission locked up and will not go back into any gear.

Transmission failed prematurely. Vehiclehad been repaired three times; however, problem still exists.

While traveling at 60 mph rpms increased beyond normal range.then , overdrive light started to flash. Driver pulled over, and vehicle towed to dealer. At 96000 and traveling at 60mph same problem occurred.but this time driver tried backing up and vehicle made a very loud grinding noise. Please provide any further information.

Transmission in my '96 mazda 626 is shot after 98,000 miles.the dealership says mazda will do nothing and everything i've read on the internet says that the transmissions are faulty and they refuse to help anyone.

Brake failure- purchased used care 6/98, replaced brake pads 10/98, brakes failed 6/8/99 and had to replace brake pads and rotors (front) after accident.transmission problems- the car began to jump while accelerating from 0-30mph, so i pulled over and parked (7/20/99) and when i put the car in drive it would not go.i had the car towed to a mechanic who told me that i was having transmission problems and advised me to drive the car w/the overdrive off and that is the only way the car moves in drive.i have been having problems with the hearing knocking noises when turning the steering wheel, and my mechanic told me that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced.please advise me, because these are very expensive repairs for a car that does not even have 70k miles.does the manafacturer have any responsibility, because it appears that there have been serveral simular complaints.

Engine check light came on the dashboard. Second gear to the transmission was gone.vehicle could only travel about 15mph because second gear burned out.

Transmission had to be rebuild twice within two months, it was causingvehicle to make noise/ shutter, and jump from high to secondgear while driving. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.

Called the dealership to see if they were having a problem with 626 transmissions and was told no.through research i have found that many people are having problems. With this vehicle. Mazda needs to do something.o d.

Overdrive came on and stayed flashing, next the engine light came on and the car started shifting hard. At low speeds of about 15-20 mph the car would jerk hard. Brought it to dealer and couldn't find anything wrong. Light keeps coming on from time to time still but when i get to repair shop the light goes out and mechanics can't find anything wrong with it. I'm affraid the same thing is going to happen to me like all the other people with the same problem. The transmission will burn out after warranty!!!

No transmission shops will work on the car because they've already tried to fix several and they keep coming back.apparently the cooling system that mazda/ford installed into the transmisison wasn't enough, so after 60k miles transmission burned up.

The vehicle was parked. Went back to vehicle cranked it up, and would not go into reverse or drive. The shifter would move but tranny did nothing like it was in neutral. Tranny worked fine before it was parked.

I brought my 1996 mazda 626 into hoehn mazda of carlsbad, ca for a specific code (p0441-evap emissions control-incorrect purge flow). The dealership mechanic pulled a code of p0741- slipping torque converter. They said i would need a transmission replacement (which would be the third or fourth for this vehicle). I stated thatmay be a problem since the overdrive light had been blinking and also stated that there was a service bulletin on these particular transmissions. Soon after i checked my car's vin number on carfax and noticed a note placed by mazda that this car had no recalls on it. Hoehn mazda told me that this was a good thing as it meant that my particular type car was ok. I interpreted it to mean that this was a warning to dealerships not to do any "free work" on my mazda. These ford transmissions (cd4e) really do need a recall. I believe the fix is a better pump (sonnax) and have seen many, many complaints regarding this particular transmission over the years. I just want to add my own complaint and dissatisfaction with this particular dealerships treatment of a customer. They never diagnosed the original p0441 complaint and charged me $88 for the advice on replacing my transmission. How was this transmission treated? fluid change annually or even more often; driven extremely gently, and failed like clockwork.

Transmission on my 1996 mazda 626 has been replaced more that once. The first time was at 50,000 miles. 30,000 miles later here it goes again. The over drive light blinks and the transmission shifts hard. This problem is system wide on nearly all that have the same transmission.

My car would not movie even if i keep it in r or d. Sometimes it move but after reaching a certain speed say 30 mph even if i press the accelerator it would not accelerate. It just sounds like i am pushing the accelerator in the neutral gear. I took it to the mechanic and he said that my transmission broke down and i have to replace it.

I purchased my 626 in 2003.i wish i would have done research beforehand.i installed a transmission oil cooler the same week.i'm also religious about changing the fluid.i only drive in town, less than 10 miles per day.my o/d light started blinking as i was driving at 25 mph.i stopped at a light to make a turn and my car would not drive.the transmission would not allow the car to move forward.i shut the car off hoping that when i started it again that it would go.thankfully it went this time and i made it home.the light has blinked before but always turned off, now its on steadily.i have been feeling the transmission slipping very frequently over the past few months.with all the problems, why is there not a recall?

Second failure within a year of the transmission.had the transmission rebuild in december 01, and it failed in august 02.same symptoms, o/d flashes, trany goes in and out of gear, and check engine light comes on.why doesn't mazda or the govt. Do anything?

I purchased this car used in november of 2002 with approximately 90,000 miles, transmission failed me in traffic in october of2004, it presently has 131,000 miles. Transmission would seem to engage and then disengage very rapidly until it finally completely failed, and no longer would engage. I was just able to get off the street. Transmission shops est. Cost to be between $1200.00 and $2500.00 dollars to repair. I have not had it repaired yet. I have no knowledge of prior failures or complaints. I have since searched the internet and discovered that this is a common problem for this car and other cars such as the ford probe, which uses the same transmission.

After already replacing my transmission once, i have to again due to another failure. The car has 125,000 miles and so far i have been out $2,900 just on prior repairs and am facing another $2,500.

Two transmission shops refused to fix or replace transmissio. , both stated mazda has had problems with transmissions, i had to take it to a mazda dealer for a manufacturer transmission - $2,200.00!

I am sending this e-mail in regards to my 1996 mazda 626 that has been having constant transmission problems.mazda won't do jack.i will never by another again, but they should be held responsible for these transmissions. Plain and simple they are defective and mazda should step up to the plate and take responsibilities.

Less than a year a 3rdautomatic transmission had to be replaced.the 2nd one failed while driving back from repair shop, car was leaking fluid.repair shop diagnosed leaking transmission fluid, and recommended dealer replacement.dealer service dept advised front pump failed, and replaced.this was now the 4th transmission on a car with exactly 60,000 miles.front pump failed on this transmission after only 6,000 miles in one year.

While driving unable to put vehicle into gears. Had to use shift lock key. This wasa result of blown transimission. Had part replaced, but problem reoccurred.

Oil sending unit cracked, causing oil to drain out, resutling in a damaged engine, dealer replaced engine. Also, transmission became inoperative. Dealer could not determine what caused it.

When shifting gears transmission locked up, making it difficult to shift tofirst and secondgears.dealership was notified, but was unable to resolve the problem. *mr

I own a 1996 mazda 626 that i purchased from the original owner at 20k in 1999. My transmission finally just failed at 101k and i spent $2000 for a rebuilt trans. The od light has been coming on for over 12 months but would go off when car is restarted.i recently discovered the chronic transmission problems with the 626 and will get rid of it asap. Before this major failure, i hadn't noticed any transmission-related problems but i will never buy another mazda/ford.

The overdrive light kept coming on indicating that the transmission malfunctioned.however, the warranty expired.therefore, the consumertook the vehicle to an independent transmission dealer, who diagnosed the problem.the automatic transmission went out three times. *sc

I have a mazda, 626, 1996 and 1st tramsmission went out at 30.000 miles. Now my 2nd is going out at 120,000 miles. I see thatthis has been a recurring problem for mazda and ford.why has nothing been done about it.

It seems that their replacement transmissions developsame or additional problems and have to be replaced repeatedly. Madza should recall and repair/replace them.

Transmission is defective, transmission will make a clunking sound when trying to accelerate, and when on highway if the driver speeds up, vehicle will start jerking.dealer informed consumer at the time vehicle was still under warranty that the problem couls not be duplicated, consumer tried to move the gear from park it would not move.

Transmission is slipping when going from first to second gear. Vehicle wants to remain in neutral.please provide any additional information/attachments.

Mazda knows they have a problem with their 626's from 1994-1999 and they refuse to fix the problem. Our od light started flashing and we had to pull over because the car was shifting very hard.i called mazda and they told me it was ok to drive the car.the next weekend i recieve a paper telling me to take the car and get a front coil spring gaurd to prevent rust from braking the spring.while at the dealer they said the od light was blinking because of a known mazda transmission flaw.i am now fighting to get a rebuilt transmission in my car with no help from mazda.these transmissions need to be recalled at mazda's expense.i am not the only person who has complained about this problem either.i am going to contact whoever i have to inorder to get these cars recalled.so please help all of the people who put their trust, faith, business, and money into mazda's cars only to recieve transmissions that are lemons.there have been numerous reports of transmissions just like ours that have locked up and caused the cars todrop 20 mph without warning.let me tell you what when you are traveling at 60 mph with a tracktor trailer behind you and drop to 40 mph without warning and accident is waiting to happen.this problem causes accidents and will cause deaths too, ifthese transmissions are not recalled.please take action in getting these transmissions recalled and recalled right away.this is a problem mazda knows about and has known about and now it is time they do something before someone gets killed because of a known flaw with their transmissions.thank you for your time, leomard & andrea dixon.

I thought i was the only one to complain about the 1996 mazda 626 transmission to fail on me, but i am not the only, many people have complained about it and nothing has been done.this is not fair that mazda know about this problem, but fails to do a recall.people should be able to buy cars without their trasnmission dying on them at only 50,000.please do whatever you can.mazda is stealing from the public.

I bought a used 1996 mazda 626lxfrom rierson motors in clovis, new mexico and have had the car less than one month and the engine light stays on , it loses power on the interstate when i accelerate above 55 mph and lurches and goes in to next gear very hard.i think mazda should be held liable for these defects in this paticular model.i hope the government will look into this matter and investigate why so many consumers are having the same problems and mazda should step up to the plate and admit their failure and fix the problem are compensate the consumer for their expenditures.

I have a 1996 mazda 626 with 80,000 miles on it. The transmission has failed on it, and i am told by the dealer that it needs to be replaced and a cooling unit has to be installed.apparently, this is a well known problem by the mazda and they failed to warn the owners to install this cooling unit to prevent transmission problems.*la

Ignition key can be removed without shifting transmission gear into the 'parked' position.

My 1996 mazda 626 had been experiencing trouble shifting and the o/d off light kept flashing so i took it in to the dealership. I was told that the transmission was about to go. I found this really strange since the car only has 81k miles on it and i thought mazda was supposed to be really reliable. I have since found out that many have had this exact same problem (see these 2 websites: http://www.cartrackers.com/forums/live/yourlemon/189.html ; http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_17103_3.html ) and mazda has done nothing to remedy this problem.

I am having problems with my automatic transmission in my mazda 626 lx 1996 model. I bought this used car on jan 2006 and it started to give problems by showing o/d lights off. Then check sign poppedup and i fixed that one. Again popped up and found torque converter failure. I took it to transmission shop and they quoted $1700 to change the transmission. In online, i read many complaints about transmission and it advised to use this site to file a complaint against mazda company. Many people had the same problem like me and this raises safety aspect of this vehicle, which is a manufacturing defect.though i haven't invested any money now to change transmission but i am seeking whether mazda company is providing any alternative change or offer to their customer related to transmission.

1996 mazda 2.0 626 lx. Overdrive flashes from 4th to 3rd. Multipleattempts to fix/find problem to no satisfaction. Mazda dealer advised new transmission needed-sight unseen. Seems to be a more than prevelant situation.

Everytime i drive the overdrive light comes on and while driving it hesitste on freeyway icheck to the mechenic he say its transmission problem and it is the problem with mazada 626 and never been correctedand they didnt buil t it correctly so i thinkmazada should bring them back

Transmission failed twice.nlm

Mazda 626 lx 96' transmission trouble, the transmission consistantly has problems, it's dangerous, because it will go out, at the most inconvient time. It will jolt, or slow down, extremely fast, or slip, at a stop light, and it's scary, luckly there has been no problems, if it has happed on the highway, there's no doubt there could be an accident. I've heard consistant complaints for other owners of the same model, and make, and year.http://www.mazda626.net/it's mostly young adults driving this vehicle. Since they are used cars.

Intermittently the overdrive and check engine lights illuminate, when this happens the transmission does not change gears. Feel free to provide further information.

I have a 1996 mazda 626 lx. With in three or four months of having this car i had to have the transmission rebuilt. Now seven months later my overdrive light has starting flashing and it doesnt want to go..my car is in the shop now having transmission fixed again ..this time something is wrong with second gear. I have read thousands of the same problem with the same type of car .something must be done about this i feel a recall is needed on these transmissions.

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and without warning the transmission will shift to neutral and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. Dealer replace twice.mr

The vehicle overdrive light was blinking and the service engine light on, due to transmission failure. *et

Three inch crack in top of rule tank ,seat belts broke and slow to role back up and plastic parts used in door opening mechanism broke.

Consumer friend was driving at approx 35 mph suddenly another vehicle jumped out, in order to avoid hitting this vehicle, consumer hit parked car head-on. Both airbags did not deploy, due to this defect, driver sustained extensive head injuries, hit steering wheel . Seat belt was also worn at the time.

Second replacement of the seatbelt.is this a manufacturing defect?seatbelts shouldn't have to be replace 2x within a four-year period.

Passenger side seat belt buckle split open causing the metal pin that holds buckle to the belt portionto fall out, causing entire buckle to fall off.the plastic casing is the only thing holding the pin in place but the plastic dries out with age and splits open.reported to mazda, but they don't care.

Driver's safety belt sometimes pppps out.safety belt indicator light is off and the safety belt beep sound sometimes is on,sometimes is off.

Front seat belts were inoperative.the plastic piece of the seat belt assembly that the buckle was installed on came apart.when this occurred the metal piece inside the plastic seat fell out.seat belt remained fastened, but will not restrain the occupant in an accident. Dealership replaced the plastic part.

O am the original owner of this vehicle.

Passenger front seat belt will lock before able to buckle, have to try numerous times.

Driver's side seat has a problem. If it is leaned back on with a certain a mount of weight, it will colapse while driving this has happened three time in the last three years. Dealer has been contacted.

I am writing to report a problem i have had with our 1996 mazda 626. I had an incident where the driver's seat collaped while driving. The incident caused an accident, resulting in approximately $720 worth of damage. No one was injured in the accident as i was travelling very slowly. The problem happened a second time with no accident, but i am unwilling to let my wife drive the vehicle now due to safety concerns. I am convinced that it is a defect- a dangerous one. I noticed on your odi list that somone else had the same problem (odi id no. 823823). I contacted the manufacturer about the problem but they had no knowlege of any similar problems. Please let me know how i should proceed with this problem. I think mazda should repair the damages and check the seat track assembly. Is this unacceptable? thank you. Greg gerke.

The vehicle was in parked when the consumer turned to reach in the rear seat when the seat back collapsed backwards. The dealer was notified and this has happened several other times. Nlm

Driver was reaching in rear of vehicle & the driver's seat collapsed backwards. The lever failed to remain locked in place. Driver temporarily lost visibility. Taken vehicle to dealer's.

I bought a 1996 mazda 626 in the summer of 2004. I have had problems with the overdrive light coming on when i drive about 55 m.p.h. I do not have the time or money to replace a transmission! i bought the car for less than what a new transmission would cost. Now i am trying to sell this car and its not possible because it cannot be driven on the freeway. Something needs to be done about this, we need to be able to be given something to do to fix this problem.

O/d light started blinking, and check engine light came on - shifted out of gear continuously, transmission had to be replaced eventhough the car is only 5 years old.

Engine warning light-service 3 times, transmission jerks-o/d light comes on, cannot locate problem-transmission is going out-must be replaced.

Overdrive light came on, and engine check light came on. This is the second time that theengine check light has come on, causing me to return the car to the dealer. The current problem is transmission.

"o/d off" light began flashing, engine check light came on.diagnosis is that a new transmission is needed.

Engine warning light illuminated.

Engine check light came on the dashboard. Second gear to the transmission was gone.vehicle could only travel about 15mph because second gear burned out.

When driving the o/d off light flashes, the cruise control will cut off without touching the brakes.when accelerating from stops the engine revs but the car continues to move as though it is in neutral for about 5 to 10 minutes before it kicks in gear very hard.occassionally the car will not even roll forward when trying to accelerate after stopping.

The contact owns a 1996 mazda 626. The contact stated that while the shifter was in the park position and powered on, the vehicle suddenly experienced an unintended acceleration and crashed into a brick pillar. The contact stated that the air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained an injured back that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 213,365.

Starting from a stop, engine seemed to race at full throttle, brakes not effective, after crash engine continued to run @6000 rpm untill ignition was turned off.

Standing while the car was in drive, when pressing on accelerator car would rev up but not move, then lurch forward suddenly while in traffic.forward clutch busted. Mazda transmissions are known problems, was told.

Idle speed control failed.
