My car/transmission is an accident just waiting to happen.you never know if you are going to pull out safely in traffic because of transmission failure.i had it replaced last year at a cost of $2,200 and it still does not work properly.had the speedometer gear set replaced by recall and it still doesn't work.had a new nuetral safety switch replaced today along with the "new" transmission not having enough fluid which consituted a flushing of the system and more fluid being put in.upon leaving the dealership today, my "check engine" light came on.call dearlership, now they tell me i need to bring in monday to have the "02" sensor replaced.my costs are climbing over $3,000 now.all i want is a safe car to drive for me and my children.i'm a single mom raising two children and this is draining me, physically, mentally and financially.i've had my car in the shop at least 15 times over the past year and one-half for transmission problems.the car is becoming a nightmareyou don't know if your speed is going to increase or if its going to start jerking and have transmisison failure.dealership admits there's a problem with this particular transmission and mazda is aware of it, but so far nothing has been done to make mazda responsible.the car is a ticking time bomb, i just hope no one gets hurt, or even worse, killed, because of the transmisison defect.
Having constant transmission problems with my 1994 mazda 626. Had it rebuilt at 140000 miles. After repair constant problems have been happening. Electrical problem with plug breaking. Constant rpms stalling and no power. Now at decelerating at 20 mph it kicks back. To the point where i am afraid to drive my own car. Took into dealership also and they said they wouldn't do recall or do anything to fix it. Links below are related to my situation and other problems with the same transmission. Exact incident dates are unknown as it happens constantly. Date listed is earliest date. Wondering on recall to get this fixed as it seems other cars of the same model have the same problemhttp://www.bantapubnet.com/gears/2002/janfeb02/newkid.htmlhttp://www.dustbury.com/626/trans.htmlhttp://www.dustbury.com/626/94speedo.htmlhttp://www.bantapubnet.com/gears/jan00/6transmissiontherapy.html

When traveling at regular speed speedometer jumps back and forth.
The problem,i have is about my transmission.i was on the highway from taunton ma about 20 miles away from brockton ma wherei live. I was going about 60 mph, the speed limit. Out of nowhere, my transmission started slipping.wherei was driving, there were three lanes. Luckilyi was in the middle lane andhad just enough speed to get to the breakdown lane.i did not know what to do i was on the highway with no phonei did know what was going on my car never showed such sign of this sorti was with my friend whotold me to put the car in d2.the car started to move slowly, than started slipping afteri let my foot off the gas, than pushed it again, it started jerking alittle, then started to move again.i barely made it to brockton.
Overdrive off light flashes on, and transmission stayed in 3rd gear . This could have caused a crash.also, recall 99i005000/ speedometer/odometer was issued.but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vinalthough it has the same problem. *ml
The hold light is flashing and it doesn't change gears correctly.had the trasmission fluid changed and un-hooked the battery for 5 minutes and it fixed the problem for a day and a half.a friend is a mechanic and fixed it the first time, but now we will probably have to put in a new or rebuilt transmission.i bought it used in jan 03 with 122,000 miles on it.
Transmission won't shift properly.when it does shift, it shifts hard. Od light flashes.was driving vehicle from work and took off from a complete stop.the car revved up real high but wouldn't shift.made it home, and now vehicle won't move.
The hold light is continually flashing.this started on sunday may 16, 2010.i called mazda maple shade made an appt.i took the car in on may 19th at 7:30 am.i picked the car up on may 20th at 7:30 am and as i was driving home from work at 3 pm., the problem has worsen.i called mazda on may 21th at 8 am and i am waiting for them to return my call.it is now 10:24 am.
Vehicle has the same defect asrecall99i005000/speedometer failure, speedometer gear failed, causing transmission to stay in third gear.also a sudden loss of power.
When the vehicle was put into gear, the vehicle violently jerked.
I too am experiencing these notorious transmission problems with my 94 mazda 626 with all the common symptoms like od light flashing, rough and jerky gear shifts, losing power all of a sudden, fixing in low gears etc.its so agonizing that despite so many people having to go for complete transmission replacements, many even multiple times on the same vehicle, no one is able to make mazda to fix this for good on all the 94 mazda 626s. Its such a pity that even mazda dealers acknowledge that its no longer a question of if, but when these poorly designed transmission systems fail.i hope nhtsa can intervene and investigate these all too common and potentially dangerous failures now, rather than waiting until fatalities are reported.having read so many sad histories with this model, there is no point spending thousands of dollars in having this troubling transmission replaced for my car, its obvious the problem is bound to occur again. I can't afford another car in this economy.i can't trade-in my car either (i hate to victimize another innocent buyer with this lemon). So, i have no choice but to take risk continuing to drive this, unless mazda can either pick up the tab for the replacements, or atleast offer to fix it for a fair price with a reasonable guarantee period.
Transmission failure.
Transmission problems. My mazda 626 has had consistent transmission problems.transmission slips on 3rd and 4th gears and reverse gear does not engage at all.
1994 mazda 626 automatic transmission failure.1 the car was bought with a pull when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear other then that no warning. All i was doing was backing out my driveway.2 the transmission suffered catostrophic failure.3 the car is probably going to be junked being that a new transmission is worth more then the car
Consumer has some problems with transmission, first hold light stays on, second transmission overheats, and thirdconsumer has trouble shifting from first gear to second gear. Consumer has contacted dealer and the dealer cannot find the problem.
Transmission failure while driving at 40 mph. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Event leading up to failure:my 1994 mazda 626 lx 4 cyl. Automatic car was not shifting into first or second gear well.i took it to a repair shop, and apparantly, my transmission is pretty much shot.this will be the 2nd time i have had the transmission fixed in the last 4 years.failure and its consequences:well, i am certainly spending more money on transmissions than i would have ever liked.if i had not brought the car into the repair shop as soon as i did, i most likely would have been stranded on the road if i continued to drive with the transmission in that state.repair shop has been trying to put a used transmission in the car from other 626's...but after 3 different transmissions, none of them have worked well.it looks like transmissions for mazda 626's 4 cyl autos were extremely extremely bad in 1994.
I own a 1994, 626 mazda es. This is the second time the transmission has gone out while on the tollway. No warning! a serious hazard to my life and others while on the busy road.the transmission lost power and almost caused a pile-up. Cars dodging me! lucky i'm not injured. 1stin 2000, then dealer installed rebuilt mazda transmissions failed again.*nlm
The automatic transmission failed three times causing the vehicle to unexpectedly lose speed or drop down in gear while driving , 2 out of 3 times the transmission had to be replaced.nlm
Someone needs to get mazda to replace these transmissions. They are defective and are un-safe. You could get yourself killed when it jerks you back and almost chokes on it. This company apparently doesn't stand behind it's products at all. I will never purchase a car from any company related with mazda ever again until they correct this problem.
Automatic transmission failed to engage in drive. Only reverse worked. But dealer fixed.later, failed to downshift into first gear, continued to stay in 3rd or 4th gear. Also, does not downshift to 2nd gear when at low speeds, stays in 3rd and overdrive kicks in much earlier than normal. Also, engine temperature seems to be above average.
Had transmission replaced needs another one in less then a year, hold light flashes, when in reverse doesn't reverse all the time, when accelerating jerks and stays in gear too long, hesiates when shifting gears.
Initially, "hold" light flashed and car jerked as accelerating to 45.2 days later, this worsened and began to happen also accelerating to 25-30.unwilling to cause accident, took it to manufacturer who indicates transmission needs to be completely replaced.car is just over 5 years old (no warranty) but under 50,000 miles.transmission has never seemed smooth
Transmission failure
Transmissionfailed. Parts had beenrepaired three times; however, problem still exists.
The 'hold' light started blinking while i was driving and the transmission started changing gears with difficulty. When i called a mazda dealer, i was told the light probably indicated a need for a new transmission. After talking to a mechanic there, he said it was safe to drive with the light blinking but to bring it in to be checked. I took it in a few days later, and the service attendant said 8 of 9 times the flashing light usually indicated a new transmission was needed, costing about $2500-$3000 for repair. I asked if it was okay to drive with the light blinking and was told no. He said the trans. Could fail completely while driving in the next 10 min. Or the next 100 miles. I told him his head mechanic told me it was safe to drive w/ the light blinking; he said i was told that incorrectly. I asked how long the new transmission would last. He said if serviced regularly every 30,000 miles as recommended, it would last as long as i had the car. I told him i had this transmission replaced about 3 yrs ago after a similar problem. He told me this model mazda was bad about needing new transmissions. I decided to take it to the original dealer who had replaced my transmission. I called & explained the blinking 'hold' light problem and was told i probably needed a new transmission, that this model typically needed one w/ a blinking 'hold' light. I went on the internet and found numerous '94mazda 626 trans.failure reports. The nhtsa site registered over 70 complaints on '94 mazda 626 4-cyl. Transmission problems -- owners replacing them as often as twice in just a few months, some replacing them 2,3, & 4 times since new. I went to my mechanic who ran a diagnostic test with a ford adaptor as required but could not get the codes needed to interpret the results (he said i would have to go to a mazda shop).the light quit blinking and shifting is smooth now -- could this be a reset computer problem mazda has not addressed? is my trans. Going to fail again? is it safe?
Consumer began having problems with transmission in 1998 at approximately 93,000 miles. Currently, transmission has completely failed, vehicle has a ford transmission.consumer states that mazdawas aware of defect.
On 05/07/02 i was driving home from work and my transmission failed without warning. I was stuck in rush hour traffic.i think the consumers should know that they used for transmission in the 626 mazda.i would never buy a ford, so why would i have brought a car with a for transmission in it.
When applying the accelerator pedal vehicle does not move, as if in neutral. Dealer has replaced transmission twice already. Needs third transmission.
Purchase car new the transmission was replaced the engine light keeps coming on the computer system was replaced please describe the problem .tt
Went to mechanic and was told need new transmission and that this is a very common problem for this make and model was told may be a recall pending.please advise.dt
Transmission was behaving badly---serious shift shock---dealer service department road tested, wrote "could not duplicate customer complaint." 2 weeks later transmission failed totally on x-way---engine accelerated and i nearly lost control, in dense traffic.loud noise and smoke, i was left stranded on highway.
1994 mazda 626 has recurrent transmission failure.had torque converter replaced, then it shakes and vibrates horribly and now hold light flashes and it won't go into gear.
I bought a 1994 automatic mazda 626 in january 2002 with 104,000 miles with an automatic transmission that had just been rebuilt.at 128,000 miles, the problem is recurring as now the hold light has been flashing and it has trouble shifting into gear.it seems to be a common problem among all mazda's built around 1994 and later from word of mouth and internet articles and forums.it seems that they use ford parts and have a notorious reputation for transmission failures.i would like to seek information about a possible recall of these vehicles. *la
Travelling down the higway andvehicle lost power all of a sudden.overdrive/gear light started flashingwhich slowed car down.pulled over to the shoulder .had the vehicle towed to the dealer was told that transmission went out.
Driver's side door window is off track and overdrive indicator flashes on the dashboard.
1994 mazda 626 auto transmission failure.known transmission problems by manufacturer resulting in defective auto transmissions that fail prematurely.only solutions are total transmission replacement sometimes on multiple occasions.this has been addressed in a tsb by mazda, but nothing has been done by them to correct the problem.
The automatic transmission failed.yh

The transmission on my 94 626 which has been treated with kid gloves has acted erratic and has been causing other components of my car to suffer.all this and i have serviced it according to the manuel faithfully. My trans fluid has always been pristine and it has never been raced or towed or driven in extreme weather.
Vehicle stopped on a bridge at 45 mph. Vehicle was towed.vehicle would not pick up gears, nor go into reverse.the transmission was defective.
1994 mazda 626 transmission hold light blinked beforei had to buy a second replacement transmission.i had to correct this transmission.
1994 mazda 626es 72000 miles.always had problems with engine/transmission jerking even under slow acceleration.3 days ago, car constantly downshifts during moderate acceleration until reaching hwy speeds.now car shifts gears irratically while cruising at 60mph and during slow\moderate acceleration.*la
Transmission would jerk, and would not be up to speed. The light fortransmission would flash on/off periodically, indicatinga transmission problem. Had no power.
While driving on the freeway transmission failed to operate. Also, vehicle would jerkintermittently while driving.in addition, noticed a hold light would come onthe panel, but did not know what it meant. Dealer/mfr were not contacted at this time.
Vehicle's automatic transmission at 45mph dropped to 5mph with no warning and had another push the car out of the way, almost causing a accident.
The 1994 mazda 626lx with a v-6 2.5l motor has required 3 transmissions in the 8 years i have owned the car.the water pump went out twice and the alternator twice as well.this last time the transmission failed, i was on i-5 heading north near the los banos turnoff when it just started slipping and came to a complete stop on the freeway.i am very frustrated with the design and longevity of many parts of this vehicle.
While driving transmission malfunctioned, causing the vehicle not to accelerate or stall while driving, which almost caused an accident.cause unknown.dealer cannot determine problem.please provide details.
Overdrive off light flashes on, and transmission stayed in 3rd gear . This could have caused a crash.also, recall 99i005000/ speedometer/odometer was issued.but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vinalthough it has the same problem. *ml
Transmission began "jumping" gears and engine revving wildly at approximately 35000 miles.dealer failed to find any problem on 2 occasions.on the 3rd attempt, i sat service manager in car with me to experience problem.dealer supposedly fixed transmission.at approximately 71,000 miles air flow sensor had to be replaced.at 72000 miles "hold" light began flashing.dealer pulled code 628 from the computer and told us this meant the entire transmission had to be replaced.i told service manager, general manager and district service manager that 72000 miles was entirely too soon for a transmission to need to be completely replaced, especially in light of previous problems, and wanted mazda to pay for part.i was told "tough luck".it has been brought to my attention that this is not an isolated problem with mazda transmissions.i still want some form of assistance from mazda!
1994 mazda 626 automatic while driving in highway at 60 miles/hour, suddently the engine shuddered, with transmission moving in and out itself. Engine losing power and speed. O/d light blinked. Managed to safely pull out of highway. This car put me and my family into danger. Towed the car to mazda dealer.
This problem because of ford, the worst car car maker of the world. No safety defect listed.
This car has very low mileage. I started having problems from the start right after my warranty ran out. I've had to call the corperation for the check engine light that came on, they had the dealer replace a sensor for about $1200.00. This car has no business being sold. Now the dealer is no longer selling mazda's. The new dealer is jay mazda and they don't care.dt
Transmission jerks, cost to fix is over $2000.00, mazda doesnt care.
I have a mazda 626 1994.on 9/9/06 i calledbidoluph mazda to ask about a recall on my transmission for my 94,626.they said "sure bring it down we will take care of everything.once i paid $80 in towing fees.the next day they called and said that the recall expired and proceeded to charge me over $400 to fix the recall.then one week later the transmission failed completely.this is unacceptable business relations.mazda is no good.
Consumerhad to replacetransmissionfour times . Hold light will illuminate, andshifting ingears will be extremely rough.manufacturer has been informed.
Transmission was rebuilt 6 years ago at 40,000 miles and needs rebuild again at 57,000 miles .an external cooler was installed after first rebuild and car is babied . Its a ford cd4e and it is a lemon.
Transmission started to slip, and had trouble going into gear. Contacted dealer, anddealer was not willing to do anything.
Transmission failed on two occasions. First failure was at 51000 miles of wear.dealer replaced at no cost to the consumer.secondfailure was at 108,000 mile of wear, but dealer will repair but at 1/2 cost to the consumer.
Mazda 1994 100k miles transmission shifts badly and hold light blinks and jumps like a monster when shifts gears. Loses power.
Consumer states transmission indicator light flashes on and off. Dealer notified.
I just had my 3rd transmission failure. The 1st time was 9/94 and the car was under warranty at 10,150 miles, 2nd time on 12/93 at 69,300 miles and not under warranty, 3rd time 1/2000 at 128,000 miles and not under warranty.dealer replaced at no charge the first time, mazda paid for the part 2nd time and i paid the labor; 3rd time mazda has refused to pay for any of the repair.i believe it is unreasonable for a transmission to be defective 3 times in 130,000 miles.further, there are many consumer complaints regarding the same transmission problems for this make and model.should this be a recall?a class action suit?your assistance is appreciated.
Transmission not shifting properly.high rpm racing for prolonged periods between each gear shift.today, "hold" button started flashing on display panel.
The automatic transmission failed.
Vehicle is hesitent when going into gear, and stalls when accelerating from a stop.vehicle is starting to roll back before accelerating.vehicle was diagnosed bydealeras having a transmission malfunctioning switch. Please provide more information.
I purchased this vehicle in sept. Of 1994 and had to replace the transmission 3 times already and guess what it went again for the 4th time on me last night ...i had it replaced for the 3rd time less than a year ago.iwent on the nhtsa website last night and i found 11 pages of complaints almost identical to mine. Hold light flasing,no pressure ,transmission failing, and people having to replace transmissions 2 to 4 times in a very short period of time.i have called everyone in creation to seee if i couuld get help. The reason this company is alllowed to get away with this is because there id no body that governd this problema not to mention they do not participate in any arbitration programs....i wonder why?...why should they be able to sell vehicles in the usa and not participate in any arbitration programs.i have mad numerous complaints to mazda na about this problem..the last time i got a transmission i assured them that it would go again and it did.you know whathey told me in so may words....."tough luck" they know there is a problem with these transmissions....on the complaint website one of the mazda reps. Admitted that. How do consumers like uss get any retribution from these large companies who stomp on little people like us. Iwould like to know. I dont know what else to do i have talked to everyone in crreation....."please help me"

Automatic transmission went out. Light is flashing on dashboard. Too many complaints not to be recalled or fixed by the manufacturer.
1994 mazda 626 transmission failure. Themazda/ford 1994 through 1998 cd4e transmission appears to be problematic according to several transmission dealerships. They all indicated the cost of repairs and/or rebuilts would run $2500.00 plus... With minimal or limited warranty on repairs. It appears to me that an automotive manufacture recall on the mazda/ford 1994 through 1998 cd4e transmission should be implemented.
The transmission has been replaced twice in the time i have owned it. We bought the car with 34,000 miles on it. The vehicle now has 56000 miles! two transmissions in that amount of time is very bad business practice. I would like to request a recall of all mazda 626'sfrom '94 to '02
My transmission failed.
Transmission hold light come on and off, will not operate in drive, reverse or any other gear.trans seem to be over heating.loud squeaking sounds like a fan belt.
When driving the vehicle, the transmission light would appear on the dash intermittently. The driver has made contact with the dealership. Please provide any further details.*ph
I own a 1994 mazda 626 - automatic transmission.i started having problems with the "hold" light blinking on my dashboard display, and the vehicle would loose power or stay in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear and not shift properly.i immediately went to the nhtsa website to see if there was any recall or problems describing this problem.i immediately found that there was a defects investigation regarding "manual" transmissions on the same vehicle.can it be that my "automatic" transmission has had the same problem?i have since taken my vehicle to a mazda dealership to have this problem looked at.they told me that a transmission "switch" was bad, and replaced it.i just wanted to double check and make sure that my vehicle problem was not related to the recall campaign # 99 i 005 000regarding the speedometer gear set inoperative.a few years ago my vehicle was included in the "exterior lighting-headlights:switch" recall.i had a loss of headlights, and the vehicle was repaired at a mazda dealership.thank you for looking into this problem for me.i would appreciate a response to my concerns. Transmission has failed 2 times since purchasing this vehicle new in 1994. Have found thousands of complaints on this issue on the internet. It is time that nhtsa compiles data on this issue and investigates the complaints. Technicians know of the mazda transmission problems and have stories to tell of the expenses consumers have encountered in repairing mazdas.
Automatic transmission failure on 1994 mazda 626 4cyl. *nlm
My 1994' mazda 626 has only 68,000 miles and is in need of a new transmission. It will surge while driving at a constant speed and slip out of gear. On the highway it won't go over 65 mph because it will slip out of gear and slow down. This is a problem many 626 owners have had.
Transmission shifts hard and out of gear.transmission has been replaced.
My transmission failed completely. According to the dealer i bought it from it had been replaced at around 60k miles. Now its at 120k miles and it failed completely.
I purchased a 1994 mazda 626 with 72,000 miles. At 84,000 miles, my hold light would start flashing on and off, when this happened my transmission was very rough, shifted hard. Now, the hold light doesnt always flash, only from time to time. Im at 93000 miles now and its started again, my car is running rough with a wheeze coming from the engine. I havent had any work done concerning the transmission yet.
Transmission went out at 104774 mi,and after that i`ve had to bring it back to the repair shop 4 times for recurring problems with the transmission,as of today the hold light is flashing and it wont shift past 3rd gear.
Complete trasmission failure; several mechanics and other professionals have told me that this is an engineering/mechanical defect known to mazda and ford.i would like some recourse against mazda for this.
Exhaust failure...fire under car, car stopped running, catalytic converters melted, entire system replaced, covered by california warranty. Transmissionfailure, no reverse, no neutral gears. Only have 1st and3 rd gears.transmission oil read okay till this happened, now it is gone and dealer says the fluid is fried.looking at $3000. For automatic transmission replaced.
I have a madza 626 (1994) and the transmission just stopped working. It will go in reverse, but thats it. I had the fluids changed with high temp. Fluids.the hold light would blink, and it was real slow on the take off.then it would jerk alot when speeds increase. Sometimes, i would have to take off with the hold light on to keep it from jerking on take off.
Mechanic will not touch transmission because of known defect.
The "hold" light comes on which causes the transmission to stay in one gear shifting to second or third and staying in that gear, not shifting over to overdrive. Thank you.
(1)i bought a used 1994 mazda 626 with an automatic 4 cylinder cd4e transmission and 2.0 liter engine on 10/7/04. A month after i purchased, i had the car kept overheating so i had to replace the water pump, which costed $375. Then the transmission started slipping, but i didn't think it was a big problem at first.by the time christmas came, the transmission was totally shot. It would rev up to 4000 rpm in first gear, and it wouldn't shift from 2nd to third. Second gear would just rev between 3000-4000 rpm when i hit the accelerator. I finally got the trans rebuilt. It costed me $1270. This was on 1/17/05. The car was fine for the next 4 months. 2 days ago, i noticed 2nd gear reving high again between 3-4000 rpm. I thought maybe i hit the gas harder than normal , so i took it lightly. I was wrong.the transmission is revving high in low gears like it was previously bforehad it rebuilt. This is rediculous. There is no way you should have to rebuild or replace a transmission twice within 6 months. I think mazda should repay me for manufacturing such a faulty transmission. I'm going to have to replace it again, or i will have no car to drive to work. The machanic who rebuilt the transmission the first time gave me a 1 year arranty on it, but i should still be reimbursed for this inconvenient transmission. Am i going to have to replace it every 4 months?
Intermittant surging from transmission, flashing hold light.some transmission slippage, then transmission failed at 150k mles.unable to move at all.the tansmission was removed from the vehicle and replaced with a used one.yes the old transmission is available..please come and take it away!
I have a 1994mazda 626. The automatic transmission burnt out one month after a factory reconditioned transmission was installed in it. I wasstranded on i-84 in portland oregon when the transmission went out. There was no shoulder on the interstate and was stranded in the right lane. I was side swiped and slightly injured. I have read hundreds, possibly thousands of complaints about the mazda 626 transmission built from 1994 to 2002. Mazda should have addressed this problem and corrected the faulty transmissions on these cars. The first transmission was that was installed was $1800.00 and was not even the original transmission that came with the car.this will be at least the fourth transmission in this car in its 105,000 mile life.
Power train failure at 68000 mi in 10/09/02, rebuilt failure at 88000 mi 12/20/05.
Transmission rebuilt 8/17/00, still having problems.consumer states that vehicle has been taken to mazda and the dealer stated thatconsumer needs another new transmission.consumer feels its not the transmission thats causing the problem.consumer states that vehicle gears are not shifting properly.consumer feels the failure is something external that controls, or sends signals to the transmission.
This is the second time that consumer had toreplace transmission. He doesn't know the reasonwhy this is happening.the first time transmissionwasreplaced at 70,000 miles, and second time at 100,000 miles.
I bought a 1994 used mazda 626 lx a little over a month ago for $1600.00. And i put another $500.00 in it getting 2 new front tires a complete tune up, and a complete brake job. I test drove it and it ran fine.i found out later after i bought the car in a few days while going up a steep hill here in austin, and put it in d2 a lower gear, and the transmission started slipping.so, at the top of the hill, i put it back in drive, and it worked ok.but sometimes is would take off very sluggishly after warming up.the hold light started flashing also.i fixed the hold light problem, but 2 weeks later, going on the highway, the transmission went completely our, right at a construction zone, with the concrete barrier walls on both sides.so fortunately, i managed to coast about another mile to the end of the construction zone and off the highway, onto the shoulder safely.i have just recently found out here online on these auto forums, that the 1994 mazda 626 lx automatic is a lemon.lot's of people have complained about the cd4e ford transmission on the car.i honestly can't believe there hasn't been a re-call on them.i've only had the car a little over a month, and im out of around $2100.00 dollars on it.i having a hard time finding anyone around here that will work on it, at a fair price.i could repair it myself, with some help, but from what i've read, the whole car was a design flaw, in that the transmission was actually to small for the 626 body, and causes the transaxle to overheat after a while.and i didn't know you had to buy a extra cooling kit for the transaxle to keep it from overheating.i liked the car when i first bought it,but, man, i didn't expect all of these problems.that is about all i have.
Transmission problems with 1994 madza 626. The hold lights came on.i just had to have my car towed in today because the transmission stopped working all together.
1.)i purchased a 1994 mazda 626 w/at and 2.0l engine.transmission had been rebuilt twelve miles before i bought it.i drove it home, and that evening the transmission had leaked about 4 quarts into my lawn.i had not driven it in a wreckless matter whatsoever.since there was a warranty on the rebuild, i brought it back to them where i had continuous problems with it over the next 4 months.during these events, i found out that there are tons of other 626 owners like me having the exact same problem with these transmissions.2.)it's inflicted more than usual strain on my engine, i've been without a car for weeks at a time, it has costed me lots of money.on top of this, my new transmission is starting to act up again.3.)the transmission shop eventually ended up swapping the transmission out twice and replaced countless part. I do not know exactly.

Transmission has a severe lack of power and "od off" light on. Car was taken to mazda dealer (schwartz & sons, 585 shresbury ave., nj 07702; (732) 747-0787) for diagnostic. The mazda extended warranty-ssp #38 cover the od lite flashing but not the transmission, so i was told at the mazda dealer. If according to the mazda extended warranty explain that if the speedometer gear set fails, and the electronic signal is also used for controlling transmission shifting, can not cause severe lack of power and further damage to the transmission, then why they can not take care of the transmission too?
Transmission slips, has jerky shifts, vibrates excessively
The 2nd time in a year that the transmission has burnt out. Please explain.tt
The "hold" light on the instrument cluster began to blink this morning.now the transmission shifts very roughly - like a performance transmission... Basically crash, bang, screech.i've checked several websites, and have seen reports that this particular transmission has seen this problem commonly.so far mazda has not issued a recall, i think it's about time they consider it.this is still a low mileage car!!!!
Indicator light "hold" illuminated. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that light indicated a problem with the transmission.
Automatic transmissioin failure, twice:once at 70000 miles (which i had rebuilt) then again at 145000 miles.
While driving, over drive light comes on, and transmission automatically shifts down.
Purchased a 1994 mazda 626 that seems to have problems consistent with many other owners complaints.idles hard and jumps between gears, hold button flashes and transmission is failing.
My transmission originally went out in march of 99, i had it rebuilt by a recommended repair shop because the dealership's repair quote was about $1000 more for the same service.the transmission failed several times after it was rebuilt and was taken back to the repair shop over 12 times, finally in august of 99 it seemed to be fixed correctly.but the transmission has failed again, and is no longer under any type of warrenty.i towed it to the dealership to have it fixed this time, but it will be the 2nd transmission i've had to pay for in the last 17 months.it's unacceptable that a car company can get away with putting faulty transmissions in their cars and there are no recalls for them.i personally know 3 other people with mazda 626s and they have all had to replace their transmissions also.there is tons of complaints on the internet of thousands of people that have had the same problems, why can't anything be done to make mazda pay for the repairs?
When shiftingvehicle it jerks really hard.took vehicle to dealer, anddealer stated that vehicle neededengine cooling system and transmission replaced. .
Have had problems with my transmission since i bought the car i have a 94 mazda 626 4cyl 2.0now i have to spend over 2000.00 dollars to fix . My transmissions went out on me with no warning in the middle of an intersection had to turn my car off and restarted just to get it out the intersection and was lucky i wasn't hit and just to let you know i had my only child with my so i thank god that nothing bad happened .
While shifting gears vehicle failed to move.a loud knocking noise was heard from the front. Consumerhad the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that transmissionneeded to be replaced due to worn out parts.

I bouth a 1994 mazda 626 with 93,915 miles in 2000. The overdrive light has started coming on in my car, and it won't shift like it should. All the dealers i have called say "when that happens, we just replace it", like they see it all the time.so i paid $1800 hundred dollars for the repair and guess what still with the same problem, i took my car 6 times back for transmition repair and the o.d light still flashing sometimes, i think is very bad for the costumers of mazdas 626 to be paying hundreds of dollar for repair something that will be broken again with the same exatly problem.
Having trouble with my transmission on1996 mazda 626. Very harsh upward shifting specially from 1st to second gear. Downward shifting is harsh as well but not as bad as upward.
Extremelly harsh shifting, vehicle does not move from stop or moves backwards. Vehicle extremelly hard to control. Torque clutch converter code detected - transmission needs to be replaced.
While drivingat 55 mph vehicle started to coast down to 30 mph. Vehicle was towed.it was later discovered that transmission will not go beyond second gear.
Car jumps into first gear with violent jerks at speed without warning.seatbelts lock up and car is difficult to control.dealer unable to find the problem with over 18 tries.have paid for limiter switch replacement several times with no improvement.wants me to pay for new trans.no way!problem has been at least monthly since purchase they cannot find the problem and now want to shotgun solution after much danger, frustration and expense.
Even taking good care of it, transmission broke down.dt
The automatic transmission has been slowly getting worse from 08/2000 to 07/02.when the car is under 40 mph and the overdrive engaged the car will slip.with the car under 40 and the overdrive manually disengaged, the car will run, but can not be quickly accelerated. I reviewed the complaints for mazda's from 94-97 with 100 complaints per year.honda accord was 7.5 and pontiac grand am was 14.appears to be a problem with mazda??
Transmission failed twice.
Once again the transmission is going out on my 1994 mazda 626i have owned this car for six years and it has gone through three transmissions. All the shops tell me that this is common with this car. Why was there not a recall of this car?thank you.
Transmission totally went out, causing it to jerk and pull.
I thought i was gtood to go after installing my the second transmission in my 94 mazda 626, one year later i am in the same position i was when the first transmission failed...going nowhere.fortunately it moved enough to get todealer where i traded my beloved car in for a "newer" car...no not a mazda 626.
Rough transmission shifting that occurs almost every day with o/d light flashing.no repair shop is able to find what the problem is. Last repair shop charged me $800 to replace the engine mounts but that did not fix the problem.issue is still on going. There was a recall for the 94 mazda 626 model for this particular issue but i was not notified.see this link for more infohttp://www.dustbury.com/626/94speedo.html.
Transmission failed.
Transmission keeps going without warning.
Consumer complained about anautomatic transmission problem. 15 minutes after starting to drive in cold start the hold light flashed.after transmission warmed up it slipped from 1st gear to 2nd gear. Then, it did no shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Consumer looked this problem up on the internet and found that therewere many similar complaints.
Whilevehicle is being driventransmission warning light illiuminates, indicating a malfunction within the system.system then needs to be reset to return to normal operation.
Experienced, jerking at high speeds periodically
Hold lite on dash lit multilple times since car was new.bought car from my mother's estate in july 2001.paperwork showed serviced for hold lite day after purchased (new).replaced transmission last summer after 2nd opinion of trans needed replacing and hold lilte continuously on.
Transmission failed.
Cd4e automatic transmission problems.car shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gears.slips out of overdrive without warning.o/d light flashes continuously.car is basically undriveable as is.was told i would need a new transmission.failed at 80,000 miles.always had all scheduled maintenance performed.
This vehicle had 3 transmissionsreplaced.also, vehicleacceleratedat any given time.consumer tookvehicle back to the dealer, and no one wanted to help him .consumerhad to pay $3300.00 fortransmission repairs.consumerwas afraid for his daughter to drive this vehicle, but this vehicle was the only way she had to get back and forth to school. In addition, consumer'swifealso drove this vehicle, and consumer was concerned for her safety.

Automatic transmission failed. Dealer has inspected and will replace the transmission. Please provide further information. Ph
Transmission will have to be completely rebuilt or replaced despite regular maintenance and no warning signs.
Dt*: the contact stated the transmission overheats.the transmission fluid spills into a vent in the engine compartment. The dealer informed the contact there were no recalls on the vehicle.the contact found a technical service bulletin on the vehicle that addresses the transmission problems.the bulletin number was not available.no repairs have been made to the vehicle.
Vehicle has the same defect asrecall99i005000/speedometer failure, speedometer gear failed, causing transmission to stay in third gear.also a sudden loss of power.
94 mazda 626 transmission failure (3 times), hold light flashes, jerks into gears.
The hold light started blinking. Dealer said transmission needed replacement.automatic transmission failed due to what the dealer said was a pressure leak. This is a common problem with the 1994 mazda 626 4 cylinder cars. Apparently the transmission is a ford product which as a typical ford product fails prematurely. I took it to an independent transmission shop and was told that the 1994 model transmission had a design defect corrected with the 1995 model year. I'd like nhtsa to force mazda to institute a recall, and reimburse the owners the $2000+ charge it costs to have the transmission replaced. I had mine replaced, but i understand it will fail again.
Automatic transmission failed.
Transmission was leaking, overdrive light came on.vehicle just died. Had to towed to dealer, dealer did a valve job on transmission at 47,000 and 56,000 miles.consumer had to replacewhole transmission. At 97000 miles transmission died on the highway.
Hold light keeps flashing when hold light is flashing, the transmission jerks (automatic tran) ar has stopped several times in the middle of traffic.have had the transmission replaced once and have taken it back three times after it was replaced hold light still flashes and trasmission still jerks after being serviced.
Cd4e automatic transmission failure & needs to be replaced.*la
I purchase a 1994 mazda 626lxautomatic sedan approximately 3 months ago, from an individual here in austin, tx.approximately one month after obtaining, and putting new tires, new brakes and a complete tune-up, the transmission went out.after doing some further investigation on the car, i found out that the transmission(cdf4e) for that year model has gotten a lot of complaints.apparently, the transmission is to small for the 2.0 liter engine, and burns up after so many miles or length of driving.i checked it out online, and the site that i checked gave a fairly decent approval rating of the vehicle.anyhow, the vehicle, as of now, is disabled and right now, i don't have the money to fix it.the transmission quit working while i was driving down i-35 at 65mph, in a construction zone.luckily, i was going fast enough to coast to the end of the construction area, to park on the shoulder of the road, safely.
Brakes won't depress or stay depressed / tranmission shifts back and forth within seconds at 50 mph
Dealer refused to cover off warranty repairs.i know this is a common mazda problem and think they should own up to their mistakes. No safety defect listed.
Brakes won't depress or stay depressed / tranmission shifts back and forth within seconds at 50 mph
While traveling vehicle will not gain speed, andhold indicator light would flash . Please provide further information.
Once driving at speeds of 55 mph and higher it seems like the transmission comes out of gear into neutral. The reason being there is a loud acceleration noise that comes from the engine. When taken vehicle to dealerfor service it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced.
The hold light started blinking on and off. The car also started jerking. I was miles from a residence almost didn't make it to a repair shop had to have it towed to a dealer to have a new transmission put in, and a new air flow meter installed. Cost a couple of thousands dollars to have a new transmission put in now they tell me that it could happen again and my car has less thatn 50000 miles on it.
Repetitive automatic transmission failures on my 1994 mazda 626already cost me many thousands dollars. History:december 1992 - initial transmission error codes. Authorized mazda repair service changed transmission filter and fluid. Codes were coming back. Installed extra cooler.may 1993 - total transmission failure; tranny rebuilt at st. James transmission repair shop; warranty 1 year or 12k miles;march 1995 - transmission error codes back and unexplainable failures. Took it to lee myles in yonkers - gave me 2 years warranty. On the way home signal was back. Since then the car was backin the store for more than 6 months. During that time lee mylesmany times open and repaired transmission to fix tr, installed another extra cooler, replaced my original radiator, replaced main electrical wiring system and many other parts. I had also my engine inspected and tuned several times in another shops, including replacing of fuel pump, spark plugs and wires, distributor and other. However transmission was failing again and again. Car had to be towed away by lee myles 3 times and i drove it several times at slow speed on side roads back to the lee myles. Finally lee myles bought me a factory rebuild transmission and for about 2 weeks everything looked nice again. Then after 20 miles of driving at highway speed rpm started to go up and the error code came back again. Since then i am using my car only very locally and after about $10,000 (yes 10k) spent on transmission repairs and car upgrades, my mazda 626 is junk i cannot even sell.
When driving the vehicle it would not shift. Transmission was replaced.also, vehicle leaks oil whichrequires a valve cover gasket to remedy the problem. Dealerr is aware of the problem, problem still exists. Provide further information.
Hold light flashes; when in drive acts like in neutral, stays in 1st or 2nd gear, contacted maxda stated transmission needs to be replaced but couldn't do work? took to another transmission shop, they replaced less then a year later same problems and more.
Transmission failure on a mazda 626 lx model 1994. Seems to be a widespread problem due to faulty parts/design of vehicle (as indicated by the large numbers of complains posted in various websites). Speed sensor has to be replaced, and there is the possibility that other transmission parts have to be replaced too. Date listed is earliest date.http://www.bantapubnet.com/gears/2002/janfeb02/newkid.htmlhttp://www.dustbury.com/626/trans.htmlhttp://www.dustbury.com/626/94speedo.htmlhttp://www.bantapubnet.com/gears/jan00/6transmissiontherapy.html
My 1994 mazda 626 "hold light" flashes on a daily basis and when it tries to shift to a lower gear, ie: at speeds under 50 mph, the transmission jerks really hard. I took it to the garage and they said it was the motor mount & transmission mount they were replaced and it did not help, its getting worse!not sure what to do now, the transmission work is very expensive :(.
The contact owns a 1994 mazda 626.the vehicle was overheating and a noise was coming from the brakes.the mechanic didn't check the overheating failure.however, stated that the vehicle had a terrible vibration.the mechanic rebuilt the front end.after the repairs were performed the vehicle would pull from the left to the right, the vehicle would not drive straight , and the brakes were completely damaged.the second repair shop stated that they couldn't repair the vehicle due to the damages.the vehicle had not been repaired. The current and the failure mileage was 103696 ,and the current mileage was 104,000.the consumer stated prior to the most recent repairs the following services were performed: new radiator, complete transmission service, engine tuned, and new tires. I puchased a 1994 mazda 626 2.0l automatic transmission, when i purchased the car they had told me that the transmission had already been replaced once due to falure. I do not know the story of how the transmission came to fail on the previous owner.now that i own it the car has started to shift very hard, and randomly shift down for a split seccond at cruising speeds(no change in accelarator travel or grade change).the transmission also causes a fluctuation in rpm's in cruising conditions for about 5 seconds.
Basicallyfromverifying the net i noticed that i am not the only person with transmission problems with this car. Why haven't you requested a redesign and total recall since this is the 2nd trans in the car. It was replaced by the manuf. With a new or rebuilt model but has fail basically at same mileage as original one. 1st failed at 32,000 miles nad now this at 74,000, which puts this trans at 42,000 of use and again with failure. It is not due to mainteince since i know my mechanical ability as good and all maintenice exceeds manf. Spec's.what will you do about it?
Replaced my mazda 626 transmission 3 times, the last two times i deployed with the army, hence the warranty time period had surpassed, leaving me to pay the bill. After much research, i have discovered that this was all because of the design of the transmission itself. My vehicle is maintained to a degree so high, my ten year old car runs better, cleaner, and is more mechanically sound than a brand new car (aside from the transmission).
Auto-transmission; system may have a delay activating engaging w/jerking. Service reps states this isn't uncommon. Please describe details.tt
Transmission on 1994 mazda hold light flashing.
I have a 1994 mazda 626 es with 80,000 miles. The car has been prefectly cared for and i have had scheduled maintainence done on the car.for aboutlely no reason the transmission has died. I have read and heard over a hundred complaints for the same reason. I have contacted dealerships and mazda headquaters still with no response. The trasmission should have been recalled from day one. I and others have had to pay over 2,000 dollars in rebuilt and new transmissions. Which is plain out wrong and the transmissions will downshift out of nowhere. When you're driving at high speeds and it downshifts from 70 to 50 mph, then it becomes a huge problem that puts myself and other drivers at risk. Thank you .
The replacement transmission has started to show the same symptoms of the original right before it failed.i have contacted other mazda 626 owners of the same year model and they have reported similar problems
Mazda rep randy haynes informed me that transmission failure rate is extremely high on this model and also 1994 ford escorts (same transmission) due to inadequate transmission cooling unit.tork converter overheats and damages transmission.clearly this is a design flaw.haynes states that failures have occurred at 25,000 miles.also states that mazda spent $25,000,000 last year replacing transmissions alone.dealer and manufacturer have no interest in correcting problem.
The mazda 626 is now on it's second transmission and is currently not driveable because it needs another new one. For the past 5,000 miles the car's hold light begins to flash, the car jerks and the speed drops about 40-50 miles. This is not safe when traveling at about 70 mph on the interstate or anytime for that matter. The last straw was when i was driving 55mph on the highway and it decided to jerk and drop down to 15 miles and hour. Not only was i almost rear-ended several times but i almost flew through the windsheild.at the next red light the car decided not to even go anymore. You can press the gas but in drive it won't move. But it does go in reverse although it still jerks and the hold light continues to flash. The car is too dangerous to drive. Some people can't afford new vehicles and can't afford $1200-$2500 to have the transmission fixed. So therefore we continue to be without a car while the manufacturermakes money off of us people who didn't know what we were getting into when we bought a mazda. They all also need new motor mounts(which aren't cheap)very soon.you would think since soooo many people have problems with the transmission in a mazda they would help them to fix it. A guy at a junkyard once told me he would be a millionaire if he could supply a transmission to all the people who call needing one for their mazda. That's sick...
The vehicle "slams" into second gear when engine warms up.i was told by the mazda dealership transmission failure on early 90's 626's are a common problem.i was quoted $2,800 to replace/repair transmission.i bought this vehicle new with only 18 miles on the odometer.i currently have 88,000 miles on the vehicle.something needs to be done to protect consumers like me.this vehicle costs me close to $30,000 to purchase.
Transmission hold light began blinking, and transmission disengaged and reengaged repeatedly at normal driving speeds.dealer stated that transmission needed to be replaced.vehicle was just out of warranty, and dealer replaced transmission at no cost after two weeks of bargaining.several months later, transmission began malfunctioning again.on repeated visists to dealer (town north mazda, richardson, tx), they were never able to replicate the problem.vehicle now has 70,000 miles and transmission is having same problem, with much greater severity and regularity.dealer still states they are unable to replicate the problem after driving over 100 miles.new transmission is now out of warranty, and dealer has indicated that they will not pay for any repair or replacement.after searching your database, it is obvious that there are many problems with the transmissions in this model car.
I own a 94 mazda 626 4 cylinder.it has 116000 miles and now the hold(o/d) light is blinking, it is shifting hard, and the rpm's are acting funny between gears.this just started during a short trip.this has been an overall good car, but the transmission is screwed up now.i have heard that many other people have the same problem and i don't really want to pay $2500 for a rebuilt transmission just to have it screw up 30000 miles from now. The cd4e is crap and something should be done about it.

Transmission intermittently shifts into lower gear while driving at highway speed.
Wednesday june 15th i picked up my mazda after having the transmission rebuilt. I was traveling 70 mph on the freeway when the exaxt symptoms occurred again. The car was jerking and suddenly dropped from 70mph to 35mph. The car inback of me screeched almost rear ending me. I drove back to my mechanic with my flashers on all the way. He informed me that this may possibly be an electrical problem and could again destroy the new transmission. I was beside myself. Mazda is aware of this problem because i first had taken the car to them and they also said nothing of an electrical problem only that i needed a new transmission. They reviewed my case, as now i am surei was not the first complaining of this very scary experience, because after contacting you and viewing others with the same problem in your consumer complaint section, i believe this is a common problem with this year, make, and model. I am hoping that there might be an immediate investigation into this matter.thank you for your help.sally johnston.
Dealer says transmission electronics are faulty, requiring new transmission. Seems to be a very common problem with this model year. Hold light on dash flashing indicating problem.

Ten days after purchasing this vehicle on 10/20/98, it was bought to the attention of the seller that there was definitely an excelleration problem that needed immediate repairs. The dealer test drove the car and as soon as he proceeded to stop the vehicle, the car would hesitate to stop (even after pumping the brakes). They told me that it was not a major problem and that if it continued i should give them a call and a mechanic would try to repair the problem. I called back two days later after almost killing myself, my children and possibly someone else. They finally agreed to have their mechanics look at it. Well, three days later i picked up my car and the same problem existed. I gave car the another 2 months of driving with caution, until almost another traggic accident occured. I then decided to take it to the mazda dealer to get expert help, after spending $1000 with them, the problem reoccurred after 2-1/2 months later. I then proceeded to contact the dealer again, i was told there was nothing else anybody could do. I am very desperate for some help in this matter, also very concerned about the lives of myself and children and other innocent people. I have contacted the better business buruea and am looking forward to some immediate assistance from both agency's. Your immediate response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Rear calipers failed causing the vehicle brakes to lock and smoke up while driving.nlm
The rear left brake caliper did not release properly after the car was started and driven.this caused the brakes to overheat while driving.i could manually release the calipers in order to drive, however this is unacceptable.the caliper was replaced twice, and although it no longer locks up, it still causes severe noise and wearing of the pads and disk.replacement calipers have not resolved the problem.replacement work was performed at non-dealer repair shops.

Automatic transmission failed under 80,000 miles. It was subject to safety recall but dealer in atlanta, ga, (rick case mazda in gwinnett county) said that problem was different from recall and charged $2,954.03 for fixing it. The right front tire was punctured as a result of a broken coil spring. The car was never in an accident or driven under any circumstance that would cause such a failure. I feel this could have caused a serious accident and that mazda should recall the vehicle for inspection and reimburse those individuals who had to replace their springs, struts, and damaged tires as a result of the spring fracture.

Since ownership of vehicle, have been experiencing rough idle or vibration while in neutral and warm engine, many attempts were made at adjusting the idle speed to eliminate the problem, but problem kept reoccuring until it was finally discovered that the onboard computer was resetting the idle to original setting, rough idling became more disturbing and was recommended by dealer to add cleaning agent to fuel -engine performance seemed to improve but no change to rough idling, the next recommendation was to replace timing belt and motor mounts, still rough idling continued, sway bar links were also replaced to eliminate a rattle in the front end of vehicle.
