Takata recall as an 83 year old senior citizen, just recently widowed in may 2015, i was forced to purchase another lincoln, because of the airbag in my 2003 lincoln did not function at all doing a head on collision, hitting a concrete wall
Consumer's vehicle was hit on the left front side with at an angle by another another car traveling approximately 40-.the driver's air bag deployed, but the passenger air bag did not.consumer very concerned because collision caused extensive damage to vehicle including a bent frame.consumer feels the severity of the collision should have caused the passenger side bag to deploy. Ts
I had a front end collision in my 2003 lincoln town car and neither the drivers side nor passenger side air bags deployed.it was not until the car had stopped and i was getting out of the car that the drivers airbag deployed. The passenger side never inflated.the impact to my vehicle was so severe that the front end is completely gone and the hood was crumpled back to the windshield.the engine was pushed up against the firewall.why did my airbags not inflate????!!!!!
In 2003 lincoln town car when the airbag deployed it shot off the round silver lincoln emblem which severely lacerated my nose. Thank god it did not take out an eye. I have noticed on the newer models that the emblem is now embedded in the material so it cannot fly off and cause injury.

Loss of am reception.our local ford / lincoln dealership tells me that there is a tsb on my vehicle.tsb 03-23-07 published november 18/03.it is supposed to be a revised hidden antenna module with a built-in signal booster and different wiring hookup to the rear glass.the kit part number is 4w1z-19g323-aa.according to the service manager since it is a tsb and not a recalls...i have to pay for the part (approx. $170) and 2.9hrs of labor.since it is a defect i think the repairs should be free.
When vehicle engine is running and turn signals are actuated, the digital dash, turn signals, and air conditioner cuts off. Additionally, steering effort increases substantially, abs cycles off and back on when the power is restored.the duration may be momentary (less than 5 seconds) or last for a minute or longer.frequency is 80+ percent of the time when the turn signals are engaged (left or right).i have had another ford vehicle which gave problems with this multi-function switch also.ford has a poorly designed turn signal-windshield wiper-washer switch compounded by the fact power is shunted through this switch all the time, causing overheating and premature failures.this lincoln is not an incomplete vehicle.the last line of the vehicle detaill form needs a 2nd alternative or webmaster needs to provide for the default choice (--).
While backing up, unknown to me, my parking aid system failed, i ran over a garbage recycle bin, damaging my rear bumper cover. If the system worked as advertised, this would not have happened. Thank god it wasn't a child!

The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle was scraped. The vehicle was taken to pompano ford (2741 n federal hwy, pompano beach, fl 33064, (954) 773-9486) for repairs. When the contact retrieved the vehicle, he noticed that the entire floorboard was flooded with water. The dealer believed the water was due to the air conditioning unit flooding or the wipers pushing water inside the vehicle. The dealer then stated that there was a pan in the engine compartment that was supposed to drain water out into the street. The dealer tried to blame the insurance company that directed the contact to the dealer to have the scrape repaired.the dealer gave the contact a bill for $880 and did not clear out the water. The dealer informed the contact that the insurance company would pay for the repairs. The dealer returned the vehicle to the contact still full of water and gave him a statement listing the charges for which they expected the insurance company to pay. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 81,000.
My lincoln has blown #3 spark plug-when i was traveling 70 mph-twice within 18,000 miles between incidents-total repair cost-over $1600-total aggravation cost-priceless !! each time the plug blows-the mechanic "fixes" it-and we are told-there is no permanent fix-and it will probably blow again. We have been stranded by this problem-in a little one-horse town-with no mechanic on duty for 2 days-so, you can add the hotel bill as well as the tow charge to that above stated amount. Upon research-we have found out that ford products have had this problem since 1996-not only lincolns-but, mercurys-trucks-etc. What the heck-can't someone address this problem. This is nuts. This is my last ford-can you even imagine our frustration-we love our lincoln-it was my husbands' retirement present-what a total outrage-this has happened twice-you know what-three strikes-you're out !!someone needs to do something-.
My vehicle broke down and thus had it towed to a ford dealership to be fixed. The diagnosis was a cracked engine manifold that leaked coolant all over the top of the engine ruining the cylinders, spark plugs, ignition coils, oil, oil filter and fuse box. The dealership explained to me that because these manifolds are now plastic and no longer metal, they are prone to breaking. The total of the repairs came to over $2000. Upon some research, i discovered that i was not alone in this fiasco. There was a class action suit filed back in 2004-05 against ford motor company. However, i was told that i did "not qualify because my lincoln was not a fleet vehicle" seems to be ford's go to excuse when mass amounts of their cars (town car, crown victoria, grand marquis) are recalled. Received no compensation help from ford or the lawsuit.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. The contact stated that he noticed fuel on the pavement in the driveway at his residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the intake manifold was faulty. The mechanic also confirmed that the manifold was leaking and needed to be replaced. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 85,800.
The spark plugs eject out of the engine and the car stalls while driving i have had to replace several of them and this continue to happen i dont think they go or are deap enough and it cost 80.00 per to replace
Mold or musty smell coming from all vents when a/c, heator fan is used. Dealerstates that it is a common problem with all 2003 cars and up and can be eliminated by sprayinglysoldirectly into vents. I tried it and it doesn't work. Close friend just got rid of his lincoln at a substantial loss because problem was neverresolved by lincoln. Lincoln should be encouraged to remedy this problem since it is most certainly a health issue that should be corrected. The problem is common and documented all over the internet by troubled consumers.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car.the contact had to replace the spark plugs in the front coil springs on two different occasions.the first repair was performed under warranty in 2004 at 26,000 miles.a different front coil spring had to be replaced on october 31, 2007.the dealer stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty and could not be repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 98v322000 (suspension:front: control arm:lower ball joint).the current mileage was 45,350 and failure mileage was 29,750. Updated 01/14/08the consumer stated owns a 2003 lincoln towncar on which two spark plug coil failures have been incurred to date. The first one was on 6/9/04 while under warranty(20 months, 26610 miles) and the second was on 10/31/07 at the cost of $320.18 and was still under partial warranty(61 months, 45350). Whilr sittingbehind anoyjer vehicle in a parking lot with foot on brake engine began to accelerate and car to move forward.as engine increased in acceleration i put transmission in neutral, engine then went to redleine rpm. I turned off the engine and waited a moment and restarted car which then performend normally. I have had vehicle in dealership for action on problem, but because they were unable to duplicate problem they were unable to resolve same.
I was driving from florida to south dakota and started up the first foothill of the ozark mountains about 35 miles west of jonesboro, arkansas on us 63.the cruise control had just started to increase the engine rpms when i heard a bang followed by what i thought was a belt or something thumping on the inside of the hood.fortunately there was the 2nd entrance to a rest stop on us 63 immediately to my left and i pulled into the parking lot.us 63 is a 2 lane highway with an occasional passing lane on some hills.it was also fortunate it happened at that point or i would have been in a difficult and dangerous position with little room to get safely off the highway with the narrow shoulders and rock cuts right up to the road.i opened the hood and restarted the engine in the parking lot.it was then i found something exploding on the passenger side of the engine.i could smell a lot of gas and shut the engine off immediately.i called aaa and was carried back to jonesboro on a flatbed about 3 hours later.i went to cavenaugh ford the next morning and the problem was diagnosed as a spark plug blown out of the #3 cylinder.the repair with a full set of new plugs installed in addition to the bad cylinder cost $629 plus an additional $190 for towing.one additional plug on the driver side of the engine was also loose and a potential blowout.these plugs were factory original and have not been changed since the car was new.the mechanic told me the plugs were not properly torqued in at the factory which results in loosening of the threads in the head over time from the percussion in each cylinder.this appears to happen quite often on the 4.6 and 5.4 liter engines.i was lucky since many fires have also occurred because of these plugs blowing out of the engine.

2003 lincoln town car. Consumer writes regarding mold spores in lincoln vehicles *tgwthe consumer stated while unloading the vehicle, the right rear floor board had standing dirty water. Then consumer then noticed the carpet was wet. The consumer believed the problem was the ac unit. The dealer cleaned the ac drain and said a gallon of water came out of the floor pan. The consumer returned to the dealer, and they found the front floor pad was soaked and water was running from the ac under the pad and pooling in the right rear floor. The dealer stated they would have to pull the dash in order to get to the ac unit and it would take approximately 10 hours at a cost of $99 per hour.
Air conditioner began blowing warm (outside air) at highway speeds.when slowing down and driving on access roads or 55mph the ac worked just fine. Ailed twice more under same circumstances. Lincoln svc center diangosed as possible compressor failure and ordered new compressor and new dryer for installation. Do notknow if old parts areavailable.

Began to notice that the headlights would flicker. At first it was almost unnoticable. Got progressively worse until i am reluctant to drive after dark. First told there was a recall then after checking vin was told did not apply to my vehicle. Then was told that part was recalled for ford crown vic and merc grand marquis.probably the same part. There seems to be a significant problem and mine should be covered by a recall.was also told that being built in canada could have been reason for recall refusal.updated 09/15/15*lj
This is a design feature; under the dashboard where the steering column is located isn't enough clearance when driver attempts to brake, he must slide his foot side ways to not make contact with console. Also, third brake light at night illuminates brightly. The driver describes the problem as "blinding".
I recently purchased the vehicle and noticed on the first night drive that when applying the brakes, the 3rd brake light(the one at the top of the back window glowed brightly over the inside of the window making it impossible to see to the rear. When it rained and the back window was wet. The problem was even worse. Upon feeling around the light i discovered 3/4 inch space between the light and the glass thus letting the light spill out. I called the local lincoln dealer who after examining it said they were all like that and couldn't help me.i called ford motor customer service and got the same response. I have had to put duct tape around it to stop the light but i know this summer when sun gets on it the tape will not stick and leave glue residue.i can raise the ceiling (and light ) up and down 3/4 of an inch but they say thats the way they were built.it's dangerous. I had a mercury before and you couldn't even tell when the 3rd lite was onl.
Led high-mount brake light causes a distracting reflection on the rear window.
Consumer states the interior mounted rear brake lamp's shield is 3/4 inches from the back windshield.when moving in reverse lamp causing entire windshield to illuminate red.consumer is unable to see out of back windshield as a result.ts

Vehicle had large amount of gas leaking from rear passenger tire area, towed to dealer and unable to find any leaks or cause of a leak.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. The contact stated that there were strong fumes of fuel emitting inside and outside the vehicle. Also, the vehicle failed to start occasionally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who incorrectly replaced the fuel filter and did not secure the ring or cap, which caused a failure rather than a permanent remedy. The contact was traveling to another state and noticed a fuel leak. The vehicle would not start and was towed to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the repair was not correctly completed by the dealer. The vehicle was to be further inspected and diagnosed to determine what parts needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.
Had a premature axle failure on my 2003 lincoln town car, only 110k miles. Same year, model, body code, assembly plant & problem as addressed in the recall for this car, but was told by ford that it was not there problem because the car is out of warranty and was built a few months outside of the date range given in the recall.a little internet research will show you that there are many of us out here that have received no remedy from ford to correct this potentially deadly problem. Also while doing research on this car i discovered that my driver side door handle that broke a few months ago creating another potentially deadly situation has also been well documented and ignored by ford & the nhtsa. What are you waiting for, someone to be trapped & die because of a broken piece of plastic.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car.while the vehicle was parked the contact tried opening the drivers side door and thelatch assembly broke. 2003 lincoln town car customer states that the back wheels locked while driving**ccthe consumers wife was making a slow left turn when the vehicle suddenly jerked to a stop right in themiddle of the turn. When she placed the vehicle into reverse and then into drive, the vehicle didn't move forward. She had to play with the gears until the vehicle finally went forward. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem on 2 separate occasions. After the fourth occurrence, the consumer was informed that they found a broken parking brake linkage.
I took my 2003 lincoln town car to the local ford dealership because i heard a noise in the rear of the car.i was told that the rear axel seal was blown out and the axel assembly was damaged on both sides of the car.in addition, the brakes were ruinedby the axel fluid that leaked out.i found out that there was a recall for the rear axel problem in 2003 lincoln town cars for fleet cars only.i called the ford service center and asked them for help with my expensive repair bill.they said no.in addition to a very large repair bill, my car was unsafe due to the condition of the axel yet i was not informed of the situation because i don't own a fleet car.
I have a 2003 lincoln town car that i bought in 2005, which was still under warranty. Over the years, i've had to pay for replacing the rear axles and axle bearings that went bad. I saw on the nhtsa website yesterday that this was a problem that resulted in a recall of this make/model/year. I never received a recall notice on this problem, and have paid out-of-pocket for these repairs twice, not knowing that there was ever a recall. Now, all ford will tell me that there is not currently a recall on my car, ignoring that i should have been sent a recall notice. I believe that ford should replace the rear axles and bearings, which are once again needing replaced. I also believe that ford should reimburse me for the two times already that i had to pay to have the axles and bearings replaced. The vin of the car is [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The car doesnt go on gear. Engine starts but wont go on any gear. Either axle shaft or bearing problem
The rear right wheel bearing was replaced less than 2 years ago and is already bad again.this specific make and model and year of car has been recalled for the bearing issues that this car has, and this car was produced in the exact plant that the recall involves.however, the recall manufacture date ends on december 31, 2002 and this car's manufacture date is february 2003.the car has the bad parts that have been recalled and it needs to be addressed.
Assisting a friend with this. The left rear axle has broken and damaged the brakes and abs sensor. He had driven the vehicle to work and parked it. After his shift ended,he started the vehicle, shifted into gear and found the vehicle would not move & was making noise. He had it towed to his house and asked me to diagnose the cause. After raising the rear axle, i was able to determine that the left rear axle bearing had worn through the axle and it broke. When i checked the nhtsa website, it showed it was not covered under the rear axle safety recall, although the conditions are similar to what was listed.
I have a 2003 lincoln town car and is been having some issues with the passenger side axel, i am getting ready to replace the shaft, bearing and seal for the third time in a period of maybe four years, i'm sorry, but don't remember exactly when it was, but last time was lest than 16 months ago, on the last two there was oil leaking all around the wheel, this time there is still no oil leak but is making that kind of humming noise, and when lifted the car you can move the wheel up and down, now i'm just waiting for the parts to do the job again. Like some other customers i found that my car is not included on the recall, but it looks like that problem is a lot more frequent than is suppose to, and i has found that some people had reported it under the "suspension" category. Thanks god! nothing had happen, because i got it on time, but it won't take me by surprise that some one out there wasn't so lucky. Like i said before i found the problem when walking around the car with the exemption of this time that i heard the noise when driving on the expressway.

On aug. 8, the same thing happen again we lost drive function and the rear axle is broken.i spoke to the dealer about the ford recall no. 04s16 or 04v328000 and he explained that the vin no. Did not apply.
Very noisy rear axle bearings, ford has a safety recall if this vehicle had been sold as a fleet vehicle, safety #04s16,they would repair it free of charge as a safety issue, i purchased this vehicle 12-20-06 in fl.it had 52,343 mi. At that time., thought the noise was coming from the type of road surface in fl. And the salesman said it was the road also, brought it to indiana and it has gotten worse, it now has of this date 11-16-2010, 59,335 miles, this vehicle sits in the garage because i fell it is unsafe to drive. It was titled in mich. And original purchaser had a home in fl. And i believe they made trips to and from there with vehicle overloaded.ford has the recall for anyone that had a fleet vehicle but no one that has a personal vehicle, does not seem right to ford that a personal vehicle would have this safety issue. I have had two other towncars and had no issues like this. Guess i should never have purchased the third one.
1) i noticed a slight vibration and noise.2) took car to a ford dealer who identified the problem as a pinion bearing, but they couldn't get to a repair immediately. I took the car to the closest aaa approved garage.3) both axle shafts and all axle bearings have to be replaced.
Noisy rear end on my lincoln towncar (2003).there was a recall by the manufacturer to replace rear axels & bearings on 2003 towncars with certain vin #s (recall # 04v328000)my car had exactly the same failure as mentioned in the recall and i feel that the company should pay or the repair. I only have 39,840 miles pon the car.the problem was corrected by the dealer and i had to pay a portion of the charge.i feel the repair work should have been donenc under the recall, whether the vinwas on it or not, the failure is the same.
I have a 2003, lincoln towncar and when it rains, the passenger side floor board gets soaking wet, i can have it under the car port and it still gets wet. I do not have any holes in the car. I had the same problem with my 1999 lincoln towncar and they changed by wind sheild four or five times and it did not solve the problem in the 1999 the passenger side floor board would wetter than the back, with the 2003 the back floor board is wetter than the front, i almost think it is coming from something under the seat.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car.the contact was driving approximately 20 mph as he began to hear an unusual thumping from the rear of the vehicle.the vehicle was not taken to be examined for the cause of failure nor repaired. The contact inquired with an authorized dealer in regard to nhtsa campaign id number: 04v328000 (suspension: rear) and was told that his vin was excluded from the recall. In addition, the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the front driver side seat independently slid backward to the end of the mounting tracks.the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired for the seat failure.both failures continued to recur intermittently.the failure and current mileage was 93,000.
Head restraint cushion was positioned at an angle with the top extending further forward than the bottomwhich resulted in it contacting the consumer at the top edge of the rear of his head.in the event of a sudden stop, the backward motion of consumers body would force consumers head backward and down. This could causegreat stress to the neck. Head restraints were properly engineered in thelincoln, town car 2001, but not in lincoln, town car, 2003.refer to odi#8022294scc.
The head restraints in this vehicle are not adjustable therefore the consumer feels that they may not provide adequate protection to short passengers in the event of a crash.*mr *nlm*scc
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. While reversing at a low speed, the brake warning lights illuminated. Upon further inspection, the contact noticed that there was grease on the inner side of both rims. In addition, the contact noticed that grease was leaking from both rear bearings. The contact repaired the brakes. However, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 04v328000 (suspension), but the vin was not included. The failure mileage was 150,000.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car.the contact noticed grease on the wheels and tires.the vehicle was taken to a mechanic, who stated that bearings, axles, and rear brakes were needed.this was the third time in four years that the failure has occurred.the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 04v328000 (suspension:rear).the failure mileage was 66,745.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car.while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed a leak behind the rear driver's side tire.the vehicle was driven to firestone and the mechanic stated that the seal failed on the rear driver's side tire.while the mechanic was repairing the vehicle, he noticed that the rear wheel bearing and stub axle were defective, which was the actual cause of the seal failure.as a result, the rear differential fluid had to be refilled.the vehicle was repaired and the dealer and mechanic were not notified.in january of 2009, while driving approximately 60 mph, the contact noticed a chirping noise when the brake pedal was depressed.the vehicle was driven to firestone for a brake inspection and the mechanic stated that the brake pads and rotors needed to be changed.when the mechanic removed the rotors, he noticed that the rear ball joints were rubbing against the axles and needed to be replaced.both of the rear end axles and ball joints were replaced.the dealer and the manufacturer were notified and the contact was informed that the vin was not related to any recalls.he would be responsible for the repair costs.the contact has the parts and supporting documentation in his possession.the current mileage was 81,131 and failure mileage was 51,863.updated 2/5/09 updated 02/10/09.

When vehicle engine is running and turn signals are actuated, the digital dash, turn signals, and air conditioner cuts off. Dt: the contact complained aboutsudden acceleration problems. Whenapplyingthe brakesvehicledidnot stop but accelerated 6-10 seconds. This was the fourth incident. The thinks it is a possibility the pedals are too close together.
When the driver's left foot was quickly moved to the brake pedal from its resting position, it encountered an object above it that gave the impression the foot did not reach the brake pedal, which resulted in using the right foot which caused an accident.the conditionworsened with the brake and gas pedal in the full down position then the left knee encountered the steering wheel, which gave the impression the pedal was not reached.dealership was not willing to do anything but advised to have vehicle modified.consumer is 5-9in height and weights 180 lbs.instead, consumer repositioned the plastic panel 14"x14" above the driver's left foot and tied up the small light normally installed in the panel.and moved the movable brake/gas pedal forward and kept the steering wheel fully upward.this made the vehicle safe to drive.
My 2003 lincoln town car was slowing (foot off gas, coasting) down off-ramp from freeway because the stop light at the bottom of the off-ramp was red.when i began to apply the brakes to come to a complete stop, the car lurched forward violently as the front brakes locked completely, causing the car to slide to a stop.i could not move the car forward or backward in gear, and could not get it to coast in neutral.the car could not be manually pushed from its resting spot and i had to have it winched onto a flatbed tow truck and taken to the lincoln dealership.the repair manager told me after investigation that the lining inside the brake lines leading to the calipers had been slowly flaking off into the brake fluid.when sufficient amounts had collected in the fluid they acted like a check-valve, allowing fluid into the calipers to actuate the brakes but would not allow the fluid to return and the brakes could not release.the repair consisted of replacing both front brake lines and both caliper units, costing over $600.only moments before the brakes locked my car had been at speeds of 55 - 65 mph on the freeway.had i needed to apply the breaks while at those speeds, the results would have been devastating; my car would have been sliding out of control in heavy freeway traffic and likely would have led to severe injury or death of my family members or other drivers/passengers.the lincoln dealership searched for recall and/or safety bulletins from the manufacturer and could find none.i'm infuriated by this ~ it is an apparent design and/or manufacturing defect, admittedly seen several times before over recent years by the mechanics at my local dealership, yet nothing has been done to address it.i suspect that it's not a "severe" enough situation yet because there have been no deaths reportedly linked to the catastrophic failure i survived.
We have a fleet of lincoln town cars used in a ground transportation service. The driver reported that "the steering felt (very) tight". Another car was dispatched to cover the livery, and the affected car was towed back to our facility.our senior mechanic examined the car and the issue is the lower steering shaft assembly. It is severely corroded, and the "u-joints" contained in it are almost impossible to move.we contacted the dealer, provided the vin, and was told there is no recall on this vehiclethis is not a new fomoco problem, there have been several recalls of several other years (and models) for the very issue.it is the exact same part that has failed in several years of town car (and similar). They are playing game with recall status on this vehiclethese cars (that all have the same steering shaft design) should be recalledthe scope of this recall needs to be expanded
47,000 miles on 2003 lincoln town carsteering suddenly became difficult and 'binds' intermittently at a constant turning radius when turning the wheel both clock-wise and counter-clockwise.this occurred while in motion at low speeds, ~25 mph, immediately after coming down a hill, as if the sudden compression of the car cause the shaft to warp at the joint. After further inspection the lower and intermediate steering shafts appear heavily corroded at the u-joints and throughout both shafts. Based on the influx of steering shaft complaints over the past year or so for the same year and model car, this is undeniably a mechanical failure on the manufacturers part, i.e., engineered to fail.additionally, based on the level of corrosion, this issue may have been more apparent and/or severe if there was more mileage put on the car but luckily the vehicle was driving at low speeds at the time of failure.images are attached below.
When putting vehicle in motion, steering is stiff.power steering oil level is proper at appropriate level.the local mechanic indicated that the steering mechanism is at fault.when driving the vehicle on street, steering is difficult but manageable.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 mph, the lower steering shaft detached causing the contact to lose control of the vehicle. The contact was able to avoid a crash however, a police report was filed.the contact stated that the vehicle was previously taken to an independent mechanic for a routine inspection and the technician informed the contact that the lower steering shaft was fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic again where it was diagnosed that the upper steering shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure millage was 80,000.

Consider including town cars in the latest ford crown vic, merc gran marquis, marauder 500k car steering issue. While changing the oil on my 2003 town car one month ago, i found a heat shield from the exhaust manifold laying parallel to and on the steering shaft stuck between the shaft and the upper control arm support and vehicle frame. The bolts holding the shield as well as mounting tabs on the shield had rusted and broken off. Very scary to see since the universal joint midway on the shaft could have easily jammed on the shield while steering to the left i.e. Turning the steering wheel counter clockwise. The shield was easily removed from within the engine compartment without the use of tools. Thought you should know. Thank you.
The power steering failed and subsequently when the steering pump was replaced the dealership said the rack and pinion needed to be replaced because it failed internally.this vehicle is a stretch limo and driven slowly and carefullyon level surfaces and should not have failed at this low mileage.
13s08 campaign for lower/upper steering shaft replacement covers 2005-2011 crown victoria/grand marquis/town car, but not the 2003-2004, which have the same parts. My 2003 lincoln town car is having the issue addressed by 13s08, but is not covered by the campaign.

This vehicle has the same "hard steering" issues as our other town cars.the newer ones were recalled, but the 2003 & 2004 were not included in that recall.upon examination, it is determined the lower steering shaft is corroded and the cause of these issues, as explained in lincoln's 13s01 recall.why is this vehicle not recalled as well?
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. The contact was driving 10 mph when the vehicle became difficult to steer, producing a stiff binding when turning the steering wheel. Lower steering shaft is binding at 25,000 milesi find this to be a defect ford should be required to pay for. This defect makes steering very hard, like having limited power steering, and it grabs and binds as you turn the wheel. I replaced the part at my own expense, part #5w1z-3b676-aa and installed it myself.it cost 168.00 usd, with a discount. This is the second town car i have had to do this repair to. *ln
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. The metal piece that secures the steering column came apart. This part was also responsible for allowing the column to rotate in a circular motion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer twice and the metal piece was replaced. The repairs did not remedy the failure.he then purchased parts and modified the steering column. The failure mileage was 68,000.

When vehicle engine is primarily cold and you begin to start in drive range there is a rattle/vibration that sounds like metal striking together very rapidly.noise is coming from the engine/firewall area.it's an intermittent problem but very consistant at cold.dealer has installed exhaust balancers, replaced left catalyticconverter, replaced valve assy- throttle, rattle kit, neutralized engine mounts.noise remains but less pronounced.very irritating fora vehicle of this price that only has 5600 miles on it.this problem has been worked on since 5/14/03 vehicle purchased february 2003.service department has been great, but problem still exist.

A loud clunk/pop sound is heard and felt at the right rear floorboard area.dealer service department verified the noise as a frame/chassis twist/pop, but recommended no repairs.they went on to say that it is a common problem in the towncar, it is just that ours is very loud, and therefore no warranty fix is recommended.we are very concerned about the safety of the car.8jb

"takata recall". I was driving my 2003 lincoln towncar on the interstate with my 3 children in the car on our way home from alabama to indiana when my sunroof shattered and exploded. Pieces of glass started flying off the top of my car and my kids became scared. All of the windows were closed as well as the sunroof. I still have not been able to get it replaced and i'm hoping to get some assistance in figuring things out.

We have contacted ford/lincoln/mercury on numerous occasions, the last being may 17th by email. Eva walker bought a new lincoln town car (cartier), she paid cash for this vehicle and it is not her first lincoln. Since purchase, mrs. Walker has had her vehicle in to southwest lincoln-mercury, west point lincoln mercury, jack roach ford, and central ford. Each time they say they do a repair, but no paper work is ever given and the problem has never been fixed. The cartier has an automatic open and close deck lid. When pushing the button the deck lid wobbles and shakes both going up and coming down, this has caused the paint in the upper rt part of the bumper to come off due to the deck lid hitting against it. Mrs. Walker has requested numerous times at different dealers to speak to someone in the district office with f/l/m, but as yet no one has shown the courtesy to call her. She has been told by more than one dealer that there in not a fix for this problem and just to "live with it". Mrs. Walker bought this vehicle in good faith that all components on this vehicle were working as described by the manufacturer and being told to "live with it" is unacceptable. I understand that this complaint does not rank up there with some that are given, but to an 80+ year old woman, who has only driven this vehicle 12,100 since purchase this is a major deal. We need some kind of help to get f/l/m to stand behind what they make and contact us with a possible solution. As we have tried several dealers in our area, we have tried going through the channels they requested first. Now we want help getting answers.
Right rear wheel bearing went out. Mileage of car is 92,643. There was a recall of this year of car manufactured from the same plant, wixom, mi, but the production line of recall ended in december 2002. This car rolled off in february2003. However, it was exactly as the recall stated and there is no way that the bad parts was not put on other vehicles of the 2003 production vehicles. When the bearing went, it chewed the axle so it too had to be replaced. It went out while accelerating from a stopped position. Was immediately parked and not driven til fixed. Machanic agrees that it was bad parts and knows of several 2003 models with the same problem.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. While driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle vibrated violently. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v328000 (suspension). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 112,000.
I started hearing a metal rubbing noise realized that it was coming from the l-rear wheel i replaced the wheel bearing & seal figuring it was just one of those things since this doesn't typically happen in today's later model vehicles.about two weeks later the noise returned so i researched it and discovered a recall not noticing it was just for fleet models. I called ford and was told it didn't include my vin #i did some further research and found out that these axles were manufactured with a defect causing the metal to become soft thereby causing the wheel bearing to wear an indentation into the metal resulting in the wheel bearing having to much play on the axle (to much movement). The end result is the bearing destroys itself and hopefully you replace it before it breaks apart causing the wheel to possibly fall off and definite destruction of the rear differential! it was suggested that you replace the bearing with whats called a repairing which is wider and heavier duty than the oem bearing thereby it covers a wider portion of the axle and does not sit in the space where the oem bearing wore down the metal.after replacing it a second time it lasted about 3 years 2011) and then the seal blew out on this wheel which is the same procedure as replacing the bearing. In 2013 the r-rear bearing had to be replaced. As of february 2015 due tothe l-rear bearing making noise & leaking differential fluid( i can hear the bearing destroying itself) and the r-rear axle leaking differential fluid i got fed up parked the car and bought another car. Ironically i bought another 2003 town car with 65,000 miles it was manufactured in 5/2003 unlike the subject car that was manufactured in 10/2003 i have my fingers crossed.fords been making cars for 100 years i should not be having this problem with axles.this problem is not just a fleet vehicle problem, i want my axles replaced.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town-car. The contact stated that the rear bearing seal ruptured. And as a result, the axle became defective. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for repairs. The dealer was made aware of the failure who advised to contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance.the vin was not available. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.
The contact owned a 2003 lincoln town car. While driving at approximately 40 mph, the axle fractured causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. As a result, the contact crashed into a concrete divider. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries reported. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was not available.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car. Upon starting the vehicle, the rear air suspension was activated. The rear of the vehicle was at a higher height and would not lower. As a result, the vehicle bounced while driving. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The contact called capital ford lincoln of wilmington (4222 oleander dr, wilmington, nc 28403 (910) 378-3858) and received several recommendations; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 106,000.
My 2003 towncar was making a scraping noise in the rear and i brought it to repair shop.mechanic suspected rear brakes but upon inspection found bad bearings and axel shafts and told me the vehicle was not safe to drive. He also told me he had not seen this type of damage in any past vehicles. And certainly should not happen at 104,000 miles. During online research i found a safety recall in 2004 for 2003 towncars due to rear axles. I was told by ford that the recall did not apply to my vehicle identification number, but was for vehicles sold to fleets. Further research found many complaints for the same defect on 2003 towncars that were also not part of the recall.i feel that ford took care of their commercial customers and left private owners exposed to unsafe vehicles with no recourse.due to the number of lincoln customers with the same unlikely problem ford should admit that the recall should affect all 2003 lincoln town cars.
Was told by ford that my car was not in the recall date, however my issue is the same. Nhtsa campaign number: 04v328000 ford recall number is 04s16my car started making noise in the rear and when checked there was some oil leakage on the rear right wheel. When i took the car to the mechanic, i was told that this is known problem in 2003 lincoln town car with a recall and was asked to check the manufacturer or dealer if my car is part of safety recall. Ford representative kept saying that my car is not part of the recall even though my car has exact issue as reported via nhtsa campaign number: 04v328000 / ford recall number is 04s16. Also, my car was manufactured in 10/02, in the same time frame mentioned in the recall. For known issues during manufacturing, i am exposed to life threatening risk. Why is ford not recalling all cars during the time frame and also nhtsa is not making ford accountable for its mistake ?i kindly request nhtsa to review this recall and include personal owned vehicles too in it- to make it a justified recall.

"roaring" noise from the rear end at 30-50 mph. Dealer (metropolitan lincoln-mercury in louisville, ky) diagnosed the problem as worn rear axles and axle bearings. Axles, bearings, seals, and brake rotors were replaced at a cost to me of $932. I was told there is a recall to fix this problem because of a early failure in the axle shafts due to an inadequate heat treating, but my vehicle was "not on the list" that qualified. See nhtsa campaign id # 04v328000. If i have the problem that is being fixed by the recall, why isn't my vehicle covered?
Right front tire had a bubble from the rim to just past the white wall. *sc
Actual time first noticed is difficult to establish. The complaint is for "flickering lights" . I was told there was a recall and to visit the local ford dealership for correction. Was told that there was a recall, and thousands of 2003 lincolns had been recalled, but mine was not one of them. The problem has gotten to the point where the car is not driven at night.my complaint is that if one lincoln is recalled for a particular problem, any car of the year and same problem should be covered. The cost of the repair is approximately $650.00. No matter what the cost, the company should be responsible.
Various problems with 2003 lincoln towncar.*mrthe radio had alot of static in it.the consumer has been having a difficult time getting the vehicle serviced.the dealer indicated that lincoln sent them the wrong specification or were late in sending the specifications.*nlm

I was in front of the townhouse where i live waiting in idle for an oncoming car to pass so i can park on my spot when i heard three clicking sounds beneath the car at the front passenger side. Seconds after that the car jerked forward at an increasing speed ,knocked a nissan pathfinder and carried a mitsubushi eclipse, from the parking lot, over the sidewalk to the grass while the car was still gaining speed towards alivingroom with the family in there. I was able to steer the car away from the building, between a big tree with a space the size of the car.as i came out through the tight space the speed of the car was too fast for me to negotiate it between the next set of trees.the car hit a tree and came to a stop. This is a commercial vehicle ,registered for a limousine service. I sent the car to five shops and they still cannot diagnose the problem. This is the reason why i am asking for help because i know the problem is still there.
I was stopped for a traffic light.when the light changed to green, i put my foot on the gas pedal, very lightly, and the car accelerated away from me.i lost control of the car and ended up on the sidewalk, hitting a brick wall.thecar was totaled out by the insurance company.this car was a 2003 lincoln town car with 36,000 miles.i then purchased a 2006 lincoln town car and after driving 700 miles, the car accelerated again and i almost hit a pedestrian.i took the car back to the lincoln dealer service manager.they took the car on a lift, checked it out and test drove it and told me that they found nothing wrong with the car.ford informed me that there was no recalls on this car for that problem.i did not trust driving this car any longer, so i traded it in for another make car and took a very large loss, rather than risk my life, my wife's life or an innocent person.

Within the past 8 months, i have had three (3) incidents:two of which occurred after stopping at a stop sign; when starting to accelerate, the car suddenly jumped into passing gear without warning!one of those incidents almost caused me to rear-end the car in front of me.the most recent occurrence happened as i was putting the car into my garage.again, it rapidly accelerated, causing me to run into the back of my garage (resulting in major damage to my brick home)!after the second occurrence, i took the car to my dealer, where they told me there had been no recalls; at which time they checked it out and told me they had found nothing wrong.

Merging into traffic on a interstate highway i had to accelerate my speed. Vehicle seemed to lock at this higher speedand the only way i was to release this condition was to shift to neutral and slowly brake, this could have easily become ugly.this to me was like the problem with the unexplained acceleration with a gm. Product.

Re: 2003 lincoln town car cruise control runaway issueon 3/16/07 i was involved in a single car accident during a snowstorm on a two lane narrow road.i had previously disengaged the overdrive and manually shifted into 2nd gear at 20-25 mph for better control. The vehicle suddenly over steered to the right.trying to correct, it over steered to the left, slid sideways in the deep shoulder on the left hand side of the road for about 25 feet.the left front wheel hit a large oak tree, bounced off and the vehicle went down a steep 70 foot driveway and jumped a frozen pile of snow.i did have the car under control going down the driveway.it was a very busy ten seconds. The initial estimate from geico is $5100, claim 023442150101027.i call the ford 800 number and didn't get any help there, which is no surprise.i am well aware of manufacturers not addressing vehicle problems until they have to because of monetary issues or legal requirements.i am a former gm dealer and have driven literally thousands of vehicles in various conditions of dire repair.i also attended bondurant high speed driving school, have an expired scca racing license and hold ama expert competition motorcycle license. Even though this was 35 to 40 years ago the competition experience took over.one cause could be the locking dog for the steering has shorted the cruise control ribbon wires and caused the problem.there could also be issues with the cruise control circuitry and/or modules. Since the accident i have heard several complaints about cruise engagement problems.there also may be an issue with the auto traction control which might explain why the car went so violently out of control.this device is rather useless and impedes drivability rather than helps.on the drive back to my house i had to disengage it to drive up small hills, and have done so before in bad weather as this type of traction control impedes acceleration.
Sunlight magnified reflection from dashboard onto windshield, is very distracting and becomes harardous to driver
Item = goodyear viva tires; 2015, 1 at a time, vibrations has gotten worse, bought new 4 new rotors, problem still the same. ///// also bought a van with all viva tires, and it has the same exact problem.
The contact owns a 2003 lincoln town car.while driving 40 mph, the contact attempted to accelerate and heard a roaring sound coming from the rear of the vehicle.the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and they stated that the wheel bearings, wheels, and axle shafts needed to be replaced.the contact was given a copy of nhtsa campaign id number 04v328000 (suspension:rear), which he took to the ford dealer, but was informed that his vin was not included.the current mileage was 40,700 and failure mileage was 40,600.
Follow up on initial complaint; i caught 1 before a blow out. 3 more to go. Lawyers won't handle it, because it didn't do any injury or kill me. Nhtsa it a waste of taxpayers money. I have to go back to school to learn this new generation. Or is there a better country to move to.
