1997 lincoln town car with multiple safety issues. Speed control switch was deactivated and brake lights failed due to bad brake switch. Incidentally, when the brake switch went bad, the consumer was unable to put the vehicle in gear. All interior lights failed to work properly.the consumer stated she has not been able to use the cruise control since it was disconnected by the dealership in september 2007. The dealer informed the consumer, they may never get the parts for the cruise control. The consumer stated she has not been able to use the high beams for over 4 years. If she used them for a couple minutes, all of the lights on the dash and in the vehicle would go out.

The contact owns a 1997 lincoln town car.whenever the contact drives with the high beams activated, the lights flicker on and off continuously until they are turned off.the current mileage was 130,000 and failure mileage was 126,000. Updated 11/19/08. *ljthe consumer stated a switch was replaced, but the problem continued. Updated 11/19/08.

The contact owns a 1997 lincoln town car.while driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions, the instrument panel failed to illuminate.when the heater unit mode selector was activated, there was no power response.in addition, while the vehicle was parked, the panic alarm system sounded when the passenger side door was opened.the alarm was turned off with assistance.the failures occurred without warning.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not repaired due to the cost of the diagnostic test.the cause of the failures have not yet been determined.the vin was unknown.the failure and current mileages were 48,000.

My 1997 lincoln town car signature series caught fire while parked in the garage. The car had not been driven for approximately 48 hours prior to the fire. About 02:00 hrs on the morning of the 29th december 2014 i was wakened by a loud popping sound. When i investigated i found my garage totally engulfed by fire. It took the fire department over two hours to extinguish the fire; for it had spread to the other vehicle parked in the garage - 2013 jeep moab and to all of the tools and materials stored in the garage.the fire marshall and the arson investigator stated that the ignition point for the fire was under the hood in the lincoln, on the drivers side and close to the fire wall. It resulted in the total loss of both cars, the garage structure and all contents of said structure.

Consumer states the battery was replaced.

When driving under 10 miles per hour the vehicle will shut off.there is sometimes a warning that this is about to occur because the instrument panel will fail.i experienced this last year and upon replacing the battery (which was less than 1 year old) the problem went away until now.this battery is a 60 month battery and is only 10 months old.

Check engine light comes on.

Excessive wear on the upper and lower control arm ball joints led to vague steering and a wandering car path. The control arm ball joints that were replaced were rubber on metal without zerk lube fittings. They were designed to fail. The replacement control arm ball joints are metal-on-metal with zerk lube fittings. In 1999 there was a recall on lincoln town cars for replacement of the lower control arm ball joints.the recall numbers are nhtsa recall no. 98v322/ford recall no. 98s37. However, we had to pay the full amount of the repair.developed a crack in the intake manifold coolant crossover pipe and lost all engine coolant.we had to have it towed 80 miles for repair. Several ford recalls were issued on the 4.6l v8 engine for replacement of this defective part; but they were for police cars, limo fleets, etc.i was told i am not covered.the little guy is left paying a thousand dollars for ford's engineering defect.within a time period of 4 months, we have had to spend almost two thousand dollars to correct ford's design defects.

Dt:consumer states that three years ago the engine started smoking, with no warning.they had the vehicle to the dealership and were told the engine had blown.they had an extended warranty but the company that provided the warranty wouldn't cover it.the company did eventually fix the problem.on june 20, 2005 the vehicle started jerking and the consumer pulled over on i-10 at which point the vehicle died.the vehicle was towed to the dealership and they were told the engine needed to be replaced.dealership said they heard a lot of noise in the engine and to break it down it would cost more than replacing it.the consumer stated the first problem was the manifold.

Car began to show steam under hood. Temperature indicator was maximum. After checking under the hood, the anti-freeze over-flow was empty. I filled with water and continued home. I called my mechanic and he sent a wrecker to tow the car. After inspection, he notified that the intake manifold had split.he indicated there might be a recall on the manifold as the replacement was metal instead of plastic. I called the dealer and he said no recall.

I had been driving some 20 miles @ 50mph on a rural highway when the overheat warning sounded.stopping and raising the hood revealed that coolant was spraying from the front of the engine.i had the vehicle towed to the place of a certified technician who advised me that the intake manifold was cracked and that it was a common occurence on my type vehicle and that ford motor company would cover the repairs.the local ford dealer denied the coverage and a call to ford customer service confirmed their decision.i learned from other sources that they would warrant this repair on vehicles in police or taxi service but no others.this is a clear admission that the produce is defective and blatant discrimination against a vast group of owners.i was able to purchase genuine parts and get the repairs made at one half the cost quoted by my local ford agency.i am aware that thousands of customers have expirenced the same treatment as i have.it would be very possible for this failure to be responsible for accidents and personal injury.

The oil pan rusted through and caused all the oil to leak out onto the ground. The cruise control computer keeps causing the car to take off or not even work at all when u set it, when the car takes off after setting it the gas peddle goes all the way to the floor and it will not deactivate unless you shut the car off while driving.

I have 1997 lincoln town car, 4.6l. The plastic intake cracked, causing the engine to overheat and shutdown. Towed the vehicle costs 180.00. Engine is clattering and moisture coming from the tailpipe. Possible cracked cyclinders heads at mininumum. Cost to replace is $2000 t02500. Total engine may be as much as $5,000. From what i can determine this is a major problem with this engine. Ford issued a notification to dealers (97m91). I was never notified during the warraty period or since. Ford should have recalled this part. As an engineer my self i would have never purchased such an expensive vehicle with such a poor design. Plastic and heat don't go together. I have searched the internet and there are hundreds if not thousand of such cases.

I was driving down a remote highway with the car on cruise control going 60mph.the high temperature alarm sounded, so i immediately pulled over.i opened the hood and hot coolant was spraying out all over the engine.since the coolant reservoir was still over half full, i drove downhill going only 25mph, to a populated area approximately 1.5 miles away where i could receive assistance.i called a tow truck and had to be towed 75 miles to the lincoln dealership in las vegas, nv.i left the car, and was later informed that the intake manifold had failed and had to be replaced.i picked up the car the next day, only drove a few miles and realized something was still wrong, so i immediately returned the car to desert lincoln-mercury.they took it back into the shop to look it over...returning it after about 30 minutes.they said that coolant had leaked into the spark plug sockets and they had to remove them and blow out the fluid.the service manager told me that the intake manifolds on 97 lincolns failed quite often and he figured that eventually ford would have to recall them.i was sent off again with the assurance that my vehicle was repaired.two days later i tried to start the car and it wouldn't start without repeated efforts.i called lincoln and they told me to drive the car back to las vegas...approximately 35 miles away.they kept the car for three days and then informed me that the cylinders were warped from the coolant and that i needed a new engine.i am furious that ford motor company knowingly leaves parts on their vehicles that are obviously faulty.the intake manifolds on some 97 lincoln town cars have been recalled, but apparently not on those with our particular vin number.the defective intake manifold was plastic and the new ones are metal.which again shows that ford knows the part is the defective and will cause problems.now i'm stuck with paying a fortune for a new engine.ford shouldn't be allowed to get away with this.

Plastic intake manifold on my 1997 lincoln towncar cracked leaving my wife and children stranded over 40 miles from home

The contact owns a 1997 lincoln town car.while driving approximately 65 mph, the engine overheated and a large amount of white smoke expelled from the exhaust.the warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel.the contact pulled over to the side of the road and inspected under the hood.he noticed that the coolant was extremely low and allowed the engine to cool completely.he then added water to the radiator reservoir.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and he stated that the failure was related to a blown head gasket.the vehicle was repaired.the failure mileage was 105,000 and current mileage was 107,000.updated 10-29-08 updated 10/30/08.

The contact owns a 1997 lincoln town car. While driving approximately 20 mph, the engine began to misfire. The check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel until the engine was turned off. The failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they informed that the engine manifold would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Also, on a separate occasion the front lower control arm fractured and collapsed onto the front driver side wheel. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.

The contact owns a 1997 lincoln town car.while driving 55 mph, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the intake manifold suddenly cracked.the vehicle was towed to the mechanic and they stated that the failure was normal for vehicles that exceeded 100,000 miles.the dealer replaced the manifold, but they believed this should have been recalled years ago.the current mileage is 108,387 and failure mileage was 107,950.updated 05/27/08

Coolant leakage, then plastic intake manifold broke, causing engine to overheat. Had manifold replaced by repair shop who notified me that ford recalled the manifolds for gov. And corporate vehicles, but not consumer vehicles, and release a service bulletin advising of problem to dealers and to replace with new aluminum manifold that won't crack, a $1,100 repair! if ford admits the defect, why are they allowed to get away with fixing only the cars of the government and corporations. What about the consumer's rights? i am thinking of filing a class action lawsuit to get our rights back.

During start-up yesterday morning, the engine made a loud knocking sound and there was steam coming out of the passenger side tail pipe. Suspecting a blown head gasket, i removed the plugs on the right bank and found the spark plug in the #1 cylinder wet with coolant. I suspect that there was a leak that filled the cylinder with coolant and created a hydraulic lock that bent a connecting rod, thereby causing the knocking sound. On investigating this situation this morning, i found that ford has issued three recalls (97m91, 99m01 & 01m02) regarding this situation but only covers vehicles in fleet applications. I would like to know before i tear the engine down whether this should be covered by ford warranty. I have contacted their customer service line and they say that they will not cover it but i cannot get them one of their supervisors to return my calls.

The manifold crack while driving, the condition caused a coolant leak and over heating.please provide any further information.

The intake manifold failed.the part is made of plastic and split right along the seam, leaking coolant all over the engine.

Intake manifold failure...part made out of plastic.dealer states manufacture had issued a "campaign" to replace at no charge because they knew part was faulty...but only if vehicle was in "taxi or limo" service.i am outraged that manufacture acknowledges that part is faulty but does not replace with adequate replacement.vehicle has only 56000 miles.cost to me to repair almost $900.00.call to ford customer service representative has yet to be returned.

Engine began to run very roughtook vehicle to dealerdealer replaced intake manifold and spark plug wires.

The intake manifold on a 97 lincoln town car was originally made of plastic.this manifold has cracked in a large number of cars that use this manifold.these cars include the crown victoria, the mustang and the town car.when purchasing a new manifold, it has been redesigned and a cast iron section has replaced the front plastic section.keep in mind that the rest is still plastic.the manifold supposedly cracks under the pressure of the alternator, which is attached to the front of the manifold.a recall was issued only for fleet and police vehicles.i believe this is unfair to the consumer.ford's engineers made a mistake and they are not claiming responsibility unless the vehicles are part of a fleet.the cost of replacement of the manifold is $975.it's not pocket change even for a lincoln owner.and even if it were just pocket change the owner shouldn't have to pay for an engineering mistake that could have injured someone.the crack in the manifold causes the coolant to leak out of the engine, which could cause other serious repercussions.i, along with many other consumers, feel that ford (lincoln) should take responsibility for this defect.

I am the owner of a 1997 lincoln town car. My wife was driving the car today with her mother and 2 children, ages 2 1/2 yrs & 4 wks. The engine suddenly began to loose coolant fluid rapidly and overheated. This left all of them stranded. After having the vehicle towed into a repair shop, we were notified it had a cracked intake manifold. It only has 99k miles. Then i was informed that this was normal considering it had a plastic manifold. After researching this issue, i have found thousands with the same problem, but of course ford is willing to handle the big guys (i.e.; government fleets and taxis services) and get their problems fixed. Of course us little guys must spend the money to replace some guys project with plastic. They would loose money if they didn't take care of their money bag, the big guys. So tell me why i have to pay $1000 to fix their screw up. I think their needs to be another class action to make ford pay for their mistake. I am paying for mine, buying a ford.

I am not covered by the recent settlement on my 1997 town car both because of it's age is just outside the covered range, and because the manifold only failed yesterday.the manifold cracked on interstate 293 in manchester, nh.when the car shifted into overdrive after accelerating slightly steam came from under the car due to coolant loss.the engine did not overheat, because i was able to stop and call for help quickly.i am the second owner of the car.it has 96,000 miles on it, has been well maintained, and otherwise has never had a mechanical problem.i have been quoted $900 to repair this problem.the intake manifold should be considered a lifetime part, mine cracked without being abused.

Manifold developed a engine coolent crack.repair was $1150.car had to be towed to dealer for repair.manifold was replaced.manifold is made from plastic.internet research shows that this is very common defect.

1997 lincoln town carintake manifold:cross-over channel coolant seepage (the intake manifold is made of plastic and prone to cracks) coolant runs through part of the cross-over channel of the intake manifold.

Upper plastic manifold broke and leaked out coolant while traveling.repair was made by replacing manifold at a cost of $812.89.reported this to ford dealer after settlement date and was told that the repair was made after 7 year warranty period had expired.

1997 lincol towncar-intake manifold cracked and spewed out antifreeze causing a blanket of whit smoke endagering the vehicles behind me. The manufacturer knew in advance that this plastic manifold was defective.i had to get a wrtecker and the repair cost me $1,100.00. Ford should be held liable

I was driving as usual and the intake manifold cracked or had been cracking over time.the engine made a ping noise and the coolant was leaking down into the engine.the engine light came on immediately.the manifold, thermostat, and gaskets had to be repaired.the cost for this repair was over $1,200.00.

Lincoln towncar 1997- intake manifold;cross over made of plastic cracked while driving on interstate hwy in ga, causing the antifreeze to leak out and endangerthe driver of stalling . Vehicle w/o antifreeze started to overheatwas close to an exit and got off interstate in time. There are numereous customers that have this same problem. Manufacturer knew that plastic was not the appropriate material for a cooling system cross-over device in a vehicles engine such as the lincoln.... This is a high end car..... Such inferior materials should not be used.ford should replace this partat no cost to consumer when it fails..this is a dangerous flaw.. Could cost serious accidentsand injury when vehicle overheats and stops on a interstate high speed. Consumer should not have to pay formanufacturers poor judgement and mistakes.

Part is plastic. Similar vehicles have been recalled. Failure of this part in turn caused the heads to warp. We have lost approximately 2 weeks of revenue from this vehicle.

Driving from a surface street onto a major arterial, a 1997 lincoln towncar original plastic intake manifold cracked, spewing coolant and engine oil from motor, when the vehicle accelerated to and attained 55 mph.motor requires replacement.if ford has a better idea, i sure wish they'd share it with their customers.i feel lucky to have steered from the major arterial upon which i was driving, without any additional negative consequence to myself or another person or vehicle.it is not a fun experience to have your engine blow at 55 miles an hour!fomoco should have a major recall to repair this item before more persons and property are imperiled.

While on a trip our plastic intake manifold ruptured and cracked leaving us stranded. We were told this exact part was covered by warranty on the mercury marquise and the crown victoria.we own a 1997 lincoln town car which costs more than the mercury and feel since this is the exact same part it should also be covered, since evidently there was a flaw with this part. This cost us 839.00 dollars to repair. When calling ford they said it was covered on some makes but not on ours.our big question is why!!!!!?

Had my 1997 lincoln town car towed to ford/lincoln/mercury repair shop. I was informed that the plastic intake manifold had cracked and that this is a common occurance. Private passenger vehicles are not covered under the recall, however commercial vehicles are covered. Other ford mo co vehicles are also having same problem.called customer assistance and was told that my vehicle is not covered and to proceed with the $1100 repair and save this bill in the event of a future recall which will entitle a refund. I recently purchased a 1997 lincoln town car in june 2006. A few weeks ago, i learned of the class action suit against ford automobiles regarding faulty plastic intake manifolds used in several of their cars. I also learned that my car model and year fall under the class of cars that are mentioned in the suit, but the settlement period has since expired. When i purchased the car, i was not notified of the faulty intake manifolds nor did i have knowledge of a past lawsuit that was settled.my car still has the old intake manifold that is prone to cracking and there appears that there is nothing i can do about it except hope it doesn't crack. Even though it hasn't cracked yet, i am upset that i was not warned or notified about this. I also feel it is unfair to recall fleet versions of my vehicle but not civilian vehicles like mine. Is there anything i can do? is ford going to recall vehicles with the plastic intake manifold anytime soon?

Failure of intake manifold - crack in upper front of manifold.lose of coolant fluids.i contacted lincoln customer service at 800/392-3673 and was told that lincoln is well aware of this problem but will do nothing about it.their recall is for commercial vehicles only - they will not address private vehicles.i was told they have a standard answer for this common problem and no one in management will talk with me concerning it. I checked on the internet and found that this is a very common problem with town cars from 1995 through 2001, as well as crown voctorias and mercury marquis.repair runs about $900.00.lincoln has redesigned this plastic manifold to a combination plastic/metal one with the metal being at the point of most stress. *nlm

While on a trip from florida to illinois in mid may 2004, in a rural area about 50 miles west of chattanooga,tn, the over temp. Warning sounded. I investigated and found the whole engine compartment was covered with coolant. By allowing the engine to cool and adding water several times, i was able to "limp" to a repair shop. They found the intake manifold crossover had failed and the part was not available and would have to be ordered from out of state. This was friday afternoon and the expensive lincoln town car could not be repaired until the following monday (if the part arrived by then)monday evening we were on our way again - back to florida. We had missed our commitments in illinois due to the delay and had to cancel our trip.as a couple in their late 70's, i feel we were exposed to a potentially dangerous situation and unnecessary expense because of a known defect and poor design on the part of the ford motor co.*la

A bulletin (# 97m91, & 97m91-s1 dated may 1996) was issued by ford motor co informing owners of 1997 lincoln towncar, that this vehicle may develop fatigue cracks in some of the composite intake manifolds used on the 4.6 l sohc engines installed in the effected cars. This condition happened to my auto and i broke down in the calif desert and had to be towed to the nearest town where i had to have it fixed in order to return home. Intake manifold is made of plastic and ford recalled the police cars and replaced them early on in 1997 according to service personnel at ford dealership, also as soon as i can get the information on my dad's lincoln town a 97 also, his intake failed on his one week after mine, his had 80,000+ miles. This is not supposed to happen to an integral part of the engine as this. He had his replaced at the dealership and i saved a $125.00 by having mine replaced at my local garage. His costs was around $550. It was replaced with another plastic intake and the ford parts personnel said it was a stronger one. My bet is, that it will not hold up to the intense heat and vibration any better. This is a very poor use of plastic, everyone knows any kind of plastic degrades under heat and becomes brittle over time. I suspect there are many failures out there or soon will be, especially since ford called the police cars back in and changed them out. They would incur the most mileage and show the problems the quickest, just by their normal use. I realize that the police use crown victorias but they had the same 4.6 engine and intake setup. Like i have written, i will follow up with my dad's information as soon as i can get him to retreive it, he lives in w.vand has talked to the corporate headquarters and the local dealership there, but still had to pay for it himself. Please let me know if there is anything that will be done and if there are other failures of this type out there. Thanks in advance.

A failure/fatigue crack developed in the composite intake manifold, causing loss of engine coolant, steaming/covering vehicle windshield, obscuring vision, also on windshields of other following vehicles. This is a defect/failure known to ford motor company, and a no charge service bulletin # 01m02 has been issued on certian other vehicles, the service propgram provides additional coverage for the intake manifold. This should apply to all vehicles with this defective part, not just selected vehicles. The failure of this part while operating at highwayspeeds presents a safety hazard to the driver and other following vehicles. It can also result in overheating & complete engine failure. Ford has extended a no charge coverage on this part for the selected vehicles for seven years and no milage limitation, and is is also extented automatically to subsequent owners. This should be extended to owners of all vehicles woth this defective part. Ford motor company coustomer service has rejected / denied/ refused any calaim for refund when contacted by telephone. They have not replied to two request by mail. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The braking system has given problems for approximately the last 1000 miles or so. I have had the vehicle in for repair 3 times, and have complained to the service personnel that i have to stand on the pedal to stop. When the brakes are used for a while they tend to not stop the car, but rather let the car glide to a stop, and thus make it difficult to know how much distance to leave between myself and other vehicles, and pedestrians. I have come close on at least 5 occassions to either hitting other cars or pedestrians. The service personnel first said they replaced the brake pads, and that the rotors were warped. I then took it in again, and they replaced an abs sensor, next time they said they could not find a problem. The problem is intermittent, and thus unpredictable, and potentially life threatening. The service technicians find problems part of the time, and at others they don't. The pedal will push completely upward at times, and in essence the vehicle coasts to a stop, and is dangerous.

1997 lincoln town car multiple brake line failures.2002,2005,2006,2007,2010.due to external rust.

Life threatening complete brake failurecomplete loss of brake fluid because of brake line ruptures (both systems) while applying brakes abruptly to avoid an accident.brake line failure was due to use of cheap uncoated steel brake lines that weakened over the years due to rust.fortunately, this brake failure occurred at 25mph, just moments after i applied normal braking from 65mph to proceed through a toll booth.if this complete brake failure occurred while braking for the toll booth most likely this brake system failure would have resulted in severe injury and/or death.these inferior uncoated brake lines should have never been allowed to be installed in this vital safety system (brakes) in the first place .and now ...they should be recalled and replaced with superior brake lines under a manufacturer recall program to prevent future severe collisions and loss of life.

Steering wheel vibration during hard braking. Three different dealers have attempted to repair a total of 4 times: including turning rotors, replacing all rotors and all pads.

Total loss of steering and brakes.

When applying the abs brakes the pedal goes 1 inch to the floor, causing extended stopping distance.dealer cannot identify any problem. Please give any further details.

When consumer is driving at any speed below 45mph there is a high pitch squealing sound coming from brakes whenever applied. If drifting backwards, tapping brakes very lightly the noise starts, and sometimes it won't.consumer has experienced this problem since day of purchase.called dealer and they looked at the vehicle , but no repairs.

Abs brake system failed. Consumer took the vehicle to a local ford dealership where it was discovered that one of the connectors had to be replaced on each wheel and one on the master cylinder.

Antilock brakes makes minor noise.yh

Heavy brake pulsation required 5 complete brake jobs in 30000 mi, pulsation develops within 3000 mi after each repair. Appeals to president linc-mercury either go unanswered or brushed off with "that's normal" for lincolns, the pulsations cause me even to hestitate to apply the brakes, so it is very dangerous.

I have a 1997 lincoln town car the two brake lines that run to the back brakes rusted out, and i lost my stopping power. This should have never happen. Your life depends on them. I had new ones put in at my expense. Can you think that they would put cheap lines in the lincoln that coast 35000 dollars. They did.

Brake failure due to corroded and rusted brake lines.had to replace all lines.can't understand why this occurred as i only have 75,000 miles on my automobile. This could have caused a serious accident as i was in the mountains of tennessee last year.i have never heard of this problem, nor has anyone else whom i have spoken to has ever heard of this problem, and never had this problem with any automobile that i have ever owned.this repair was costing approximately $2,000 to replace all lines.please advise.thank you.

Consumer complained about abrake line problem. There isinsufficient clearance between the brake line and the underbody front floor pan assembly. This has caused excessive wear to the brake lne resulting in loss of brake fluid and and increasing the braking distance.

Ford lincoln--town car, year model1997.brake line(tubing)between point of distribution from master cylinder/boosterto rear axle.also brake line between rear wheels(fastened to outside of rear axle housing).this brake line tubing is of inferior metal composition prone to rusting in northern climates where winter salt is spread on road surfaces.case in point:when the car was parked on the parking lot, everything was fine.when car was restarted after a short duration of being parked, upon pressing the brake pedal, all brake fluid squirted onto pavement.root cause:the corroded brake line burst somewhere, approximately, under the driver's seat on the roadside(bottom side)of the floor board.this necessitates the replacement of the entire brake line tubing stretch(as per design)in excess of$1,200, parts and labor included.this burst of fluid could have occurred anywhere.since the incident occurred at a time and a place from where it was possible to drive the car a short distance to its home parking position using only the emergency brake, where needed, at a speed of no higher than10 -15 mph.a private research indicated that this problem is somewhat'common.'subsequent inquiries at dealerships verified the fact that there is a goodly number of brake line replacements.labor time expended is about a full day(a full shift).to the writer of this note it is not known how many serious accidents might have been already caused by this inferior quality brake line.a short length of the subject brake line covered with a plastic coating -- when uncovered to exposethe metal tubing -- showed that tubing as if brand new, unaffected by the road salt.this is a very serious problem, and it merits a thorough investigation including a recall.the writer of this note is not aware of any later models having the same type of problem.that is up to the investigators to find out.

1997 lincoln town car front control arm lower ball joint failed, puncturing tire and driving lower control arm into asphalt.speed of accident 15 mph.numerous complaints on lower control arm failures for lincoln, crown victoria etc.manufacturer claims the specific vin is not under recall criteria.i suspect this is an oversight by the manufacturer.i am thankful that i was not taking my child on the highway when this occurred at highway speeds.there would have certainly been a wreck and the way the failure occurred, i am not sure how the car could not have spun and rolled if the failure would have occurred at a higher speed.the control arm left a groove in the asphalt and halted the car instantly throwing everyone forward when it occurred.it would be advisable to have these recalled to avoid potential litigation and law suits.i have seen several instances of this in this complaint database as well as on the web.i have not seen any class action suit and can only find the recall on the lower control arm that apparently does not include my specific vin number (and a lot of others apparently as well).i have asked several mechanics and they are aware of this and suspect a manufacturing defect and they also say that it is pretty ridiculous to have a control arm go out so soon in a vehicles life.there are cars that still have their original control arms and twice the mileage of other manufacturers.the repairs are expensive, the failure is dangerous, and i honestly have problems trusting whether the dealer will use parts that have been re-engineered to overcome this failure.especially since we are seeing that some of the replacement control arms appear to have the same failures or same defect.how can i be assured that this will not occur again?and will i be just as lucky as i was this time in that the failure occurred at extremely low speed?

Vehicle was parked, consumer noticed that front left side had dropped to ground, towed to dealer who found front lower control armhad fallen off. There was a recall 98v322000 on this component in 1998, but this vehicle was not affected.

Heard a popping in the front end of my 1997 lincoln towncar and it was pulling to the left when i would apply the brakes. I took it to the garage and had the tires rotated and the front brakes replaced and the rotors were replaced and brake pads, nothing was noticed at this time. The car was still pulling to the left when the brakes were applied. I was driving to my job which is about 10 miles from home and when i pulled in to the drive and went to back up i heard a loud pop, i called my husband and told him about it and when he looked underneath the car he found that the lower control arm bracket that was factory welded to the frame had come loose. The popping noise was obviously flexing of the bracket that was welded to the frame and when the brakes were applied the flexing of the bracket was causing the car to pull to the left. My husband call the local lincoln dealership and explained what had happened and was told that they had never heard of this happening before. I then went on line to carfax and researched the history of my car to see if it had ever been wrecked and the results were clean, no wrecks or service history of any problem. We have had several people look at the car and each and every one expressed that this was a first for them, that they had never heard of this happening before and that they feel like it was a factory default on the welding and that i must have had an angel on my shoulder because this could have been very dangerous. As it stands right now i am at awe as to what to do because i have been advised to not have anything done to the car till someone from ford/lincoln looks at. I feel that this could have been a life threatening situation and that ford/lincoln should take some responsibility for this problem. This vehicle is used on the road only and not used as an off road vehicle and it has not been abused in its use.i would very much appreciate some kind of response or help with this problem as soon as possible.

Welding broke loose from around lower control arm, causing vehicle to severely pull to right/left, driver lost control, nearly caused crash, vehicle at dealer's for repair.

Upon re-entering the vehicle and backing out, the right front side fell to the ground.again, the right front lower ball joint failed.this time, i had to also replace the right front lower control arm, right front stabilizer link, right front shock and right front ball joint.there is a serious problem with the 1997 lincoln towncar's front end.when the mechanic went to install the right lower ball joint (which is a pressed fit) the ball joint went right in by hand, which indicated that the right front lower control arm was faulty.i now have a rattling sound coming from the left front side.i'm really scared to drive this car.

Our 1997 lincoln town car that was part of the deactivation switch recall began honking as the alarm triggered on the evening of august 24, 2010 in our garage.after clearing the alarm several times, i investigated the battery voltage and all was well.the alarm triggered again and i cleared it.as i closed the hood smoke began to escape near the rear drivers side corner of the hood.i opened the hood as the smoke slowed down.the connector to the deactivation switch was very warm and the switch had brake fluid on it.the recall installed 20 amp fuse had not opened.upon investigation i found that the fuse in the recall installed harness was in the circuit between the switch and the cruise control instead of between the battery and the switch.hence the fuse provided no protection against the potential fire.thankfully i was standing there when it happened and could disconnect the cable from the switch.otherwise we were at risk of fire that could have spread to our house.
