Dealership failed to provide prompt repair of a fire hazard recall.i made an appointment as the recall requested for the speed control fire hazard, the dealership put at least four other vehicles ahead of mine and this is a small dealership.this was a work day for me, hence the appointment, and a repair that would take less than 15 minutes was looking to take a couple of hours.obviously the dealership makes more income from regular repair jobs, but this is a lincoln problem that should have been handled on a priority basis since is presents a fire hazard.i have done my part, i cannot afford to take off 2 or 3 hours because the recall repair is not a money maker for the dealership.
I was driving the lincoln on a moonless night on an interstate with the high-beams on and the cd player operating.suddenly, the lincoln's headlights began to rapidly oscillate on and off.this continued for several seconds.to avoid a serious accident, i immediately turned off the cd player and the high headlight beams.fortunately, the low headlight beams continued to burn, albeit dimly.i took the lincoln to the dealer listed above, but an electrical system diagnostic check did not find any problems.i reported this problem to the ford motor company, but they have refuse to take any action to correct this problem.this is a serious defect that, in my opinion, warrants a recall of this model.
Electrical circuit shorted out and caused fuel pump to stop. All power to the engine was shut off almost caused accident. Please describe details.

Car stalls both when idling ready to move and turning corners where it loses power steering
I've owned a 96 lincoln town car for about 2 years now and the intake manifold cracked recently what can i do about that cause i've just recently heard about the recall and i don't want to have to worry about that constantly happening, is there any thing i can do.
Intake on motor was made of plastic and it cracked.the replacement was redesigned with aluminum frontin place of plastic. If part was designed right why was replacement made with aluminum. The cost of the part was over 550.00plus labor and other parts.
Plastic manifold crack, engine and engine cooling system blew up on a busy parkway. Should be liable for this big engineering problem on it cars. I brought this car new and to get it fixed it cause a lot of money . Was never notify of this condition .
Melted intake manifold.
Manifold developed 4" crack while on mass pike.lost coolant in short time and overheated. Removed alternator after cool down and covered with duct tape and filled with water.made 3 more fill stops on ride home without overheat (80mi). Replaced manifold, but started using anti-freeze.replaced engine a month later.
My vehicle started smoking out of the exhaust.anti freeze loss and smoke, anytime it is running.car has been in a garage, awaiting new, improved intake manifold to replace defective original one.i have purchased the parts. Has not been installed yet; big job, i am told by dealer. Ford apparently admitted about the defective part in court.
Small piece of plastic from intake went into the cylinder #4 and rapped around one of the values causing this value to stay open so cylinder #4 has no compression.
While driving on the highway the engine overheated w/o warning and vehicle stalled.dealer determined that the plastic intake manifold cracked in half. Ts
I own a 1996 lincoln town car v-8 4.6 engine, which has a plastic intake manifold, terrible mistake by ford engineers, i made a temporary repair to move the vehicle from the middle of no were, it worked until i install the thermostat again to make the smog inspection to the car, the manifold crack again, leaking the anti-freeze, i get this car from a used car lot dealer, it only has around 85,000 miles, i check that there is a recall in this failure for the kind of engine, but not every owner qualifies for the repair, why?i all ready run my vin number in the ford website and do not show anything. From my point of view, ford motor company is liable for this engineering mistake, every body in this world that is mechanic oriented knows that plastic do not hold for temperature and pressure. My car vin [xxx]. This is a expensive repair and this is not part of normal wear or missed use, so i, in use of a tort law, award the same of others in similar circumstances, i want to have my car repaired by ford motor company. While driving at highway speedtemperature gauge went to maximum, and the intake manifold blew. This caused anti freeze to spread onto engine without warning.
I would like to inform you about a safety problem with certain lincoln town car models.i am the owner of a 1996 lincoln town car (signature series).on june 16, 2006,while driving in town with the air conditioning on, isaw smoke pouring from under the hood and antifreeze leaking from under the car.after opening the hood i saw antifreeze all over the engine block.i managed to drive the car to a nearby jiffy lube.the technician there could not find any leaks in the hoses or the radiator.after allowing the car to cool for about thirty minutes, the technician filled the radiator with a 50-50 antifreeze-water mixture.i started driving home, about five miles away.before i arrived, the temperature gauge reached the maximum point, and the high-temperature alarm sounded.i immediately stopped the car and opened the hood.again, i saw antifreeze all over the engine.when the car had cooled, i checked the coolant level: it was completely dry!i had the car towed to a local garage, where the mechanic found a two-inch crack at the rear of the intake manifold!this mechanic told me that a large number of ford vehicles had experienced a similar problem with intake manifolds, which were fabricated from plastic, rather than metal.he said that dozens of north carolina highway patrol cars (crown victorias equipped with the same 4.6-liter engine that's in my lincoln) had been recalled because of defective intake manifolds.this kind of problem warrants a safety recall.imagine what could happen if a car being driven on an interstate were to suddenly lose all of its coolant from a leaking intake manifold! in view of the safety hazards a leaking intake manifold can (and does) create, i believe that ford motor company should reimburse me for the costs i incurred for a new manifold and the labor to install it. (i kept the defective manifold, in case you want to inspect it.)
Ford has a history of composite intake manifold failures on their 4.6l v-8 engines. The crack, noted by ford, is on the first crossover directly behind the alternator. The leaking freeze sprays all ove the engine's electrical system and causes the engine to stop. This sudden loss of power could cause unnecessary accidents. Ford, at present, does not offer an entended warranty on this design failure.dt
Service manager stated that the intake manifold "blew" while checking engine rpm , resulting in loss of coolant and engine failure. Further stated that his facility had replaced 30 defective plastic intake manifolds so far this year , 16 since april. He indicated that ford motor willreplace at no cost to taxicab , police, and ford thunderbird owners , but not to individual out of warranty owners. Cost to replaceby the dealers book including labor $1241.00 design defect : intake manifold inreplacement part changes the front coolant transfer section with metal section instead of plastic. Rear section that transferscoolant also is not changed ,remains plastic. When is projected failure of rear plastic coolant part as this vehicle only had 59,126 miles on the odometer at the time of failure. ?i have retained the defective intake manifold and have documented with photo graphs the defective section with replacement part labels.
Cooling system fan belt failed without warning. The part had been repaired five times, however the problem still exists.

The engine will randomly stall, has stalled in intersections two times inducing near loss of steering control.i was able to restart after a number of tries.on 10-21-99 i had amechanic check it out, change filters, clean injectors.the engine still has the random stall feature.today, when i drove the car home, it died in my driveway.i let it cool down.restarted it and continued to stall and die as i tried to back out my drive.**note**i notice your database has other stall reports---the loss of steering control and the random failures seems dangerous.please check this out immediately.i'll notify my dealer and also congress & the us senate to find out whether nhtsa has or should have already acted on this possible serious problem.

The exhaust converter went bad at the mileage specified.notice-i also own a 1990 lincoln towncar, on which the identical right side tie rod wore out.on the 1996 towncar the tierod was so bad that the right side control arm seperated at the tie rod upon pulling into my driveway!if this component would have failed at highway speeds the resulting lack of steering control would have caused loss of life or equipment.

For ford to pay only for these component failures for the first seven years after original purchase is unfair to many owners of lincoln/ mercury vehicles.

On 3/20/04, i noticed an unusual amount of an engine fluid dripping from my 1996 town car as i backed out of my garage, so i took it to the repair shop that has done the majority of the maintenance on the vehicle. They diagnosed that the plastic intake manifold was cracked and leaking and needed to be replaced. They told me that "this is a common problem" with thisengine and that they had repaired quite a lot of them.

I have a cracked plastic intake manifold that nearly caused to to reck my car and or destroy the engine
My complaint is about the intake manifold on the 1996 lincoln town car. I am a avide car person and i have worked on car all my life. I have come across a problem that i have found out a lot of people are having. The intake manifold on the 4.6 liter engine. This engine is common in the big ford car. My car developed this problem after 136,000 miles. So when i started looking for the part i had a problem finding it. After a long search i started getting the samething, we are out of the part, and the people that had the part wanted just as much or more than the part cost new.then i was told by a person at the junk yard that i should check to see if there was a recall because he stated that he gets a lot of callson this same part.i called ford and found out that there was an extended warranty on the part, seven years. My warranty expired last year. So i started doing research and found out that this problem was all over the country. So i went to the dealership. I went on 8/18/2004 and i asked about this and a mechanic took me to a work station and on the floor was 4 intakes all with the same things, cracked! i wrote ford and was told that they could not do any thing for me, my time has expired. Now i am out of a car with no job and no money and ford will not do anything. I think that this is something for you to look into. Ford should issue a recall!i have done a lot of research on this matter. Please contact me!

When turning on headlights the panel lights dim due to design, this results in difficulty in seeing dash components during daytime.
Headlights and dash panel cut off intermittently while driving on smooth pavement for past 10 years.i have had dealership experience this but they could not find any problem.also, the speedometer shows car speed at 100 or more mph when starting car but goes to normal when moving.i just replaced the motorcraft alternator with a rebuild version and the speedometer problem is gone.can't be sure that the headlight issue is gone too, but this seems to be the magic fix.i'm wondering if a batch of intermittently defective motorcraft alternators were oem since this seems to be a problem for others.it is very scary to be driving 55 mph and have the headlights cut off for a short time.months go by and nothing happens; then there it is again.i was thinking that the car was haunted.i still have the old motorcraft alternator but i will return it to autozone to get my core back unless it can be used to determine it is defective.over the years i have spent a lot at repair shops and the dealership trying to locate the cause of this.at the suggestion of the dealer service manager, i replaced the speed sensor twice over the yearsto "fix" the erratic speed at startup but without any change.
Headlights go out frequently at night, not allowing consumer to see. Dealer looked at vehicle and found nothing wrong with it.
While driving with head lights on, the lights went out twice and the third time would not come back on.
There is a very high number of vehicles of all types on the road on which the headlight lenses have become foggy or yellowed as a result of uv or chemical age.this results of loss of headlight range, clarity of vision and glare to oncoming vehicles as the result of scattered light rather than focused.i have experienced this problem on my 1996 lincoln town car and cleared it up to some extent using fine polishing cream but lens is not left clear and is getting more foggy as time passes.i consider this a hazardous fault and believe that all such headlight lenses/assemblies should be recalled and replaced.
Headlights failed on five occasions in the last two years, both headlights have suddenly shut off, once even when traveling at 55 mph.lights come on intermittently, about every 10-15 seconds.dealership has offerred to replace the present 18 amp headlight circuit braker with a 25 amp circuit breaker.however, owners manual indicates that using a circuit breaker with a higher amp could cause severe wire damage and cause fire.
While driving down a narrow highway, using the high beams, the headlight system failed (no dash lights or headlights).i was using the autolamp system.i pulled to the side of the road, and tried to manually turn on lights to no avail.after waiting a minute with the car off, started it back up and headlights came back on.this happened again several times as i tried to get home.the 18 amp breaker for the lighting system was very hot.i traded the 20 amp circuit breaker from the power locks/windows system with the 18 amp breaker on the lighting system, and drove home.it did not act up again.i will try replacing the 18 amp breaker and check the load on the system with a multimeter.
The entire light system fails while traveling.this has happened twice.we have had it checked and the headlight switch replaced.the incident still occurred after the replacement .
While driving, the headlights went off for about 10-15 seconds and then came back.the consumer states that both headlights have suddenly shut off, once leaving the consumer deserted in a 2 lane highway with no other light sources.*scc

I own a 1996 lincoln town car with approximately 73,000 miles on the odometer.recently, i have been experiencing problems with the front end wobbling.i took the car to sears automotive and discovered that the lower ball joint are defective andcontrol arms.the problem matches exactly your recall below:nhtsa campaign id number: 98v322000summary:vehicle description: certain 1996-1999 ford crown victoria police, fleet, natural gas, and 1996-1999 lincoln town car limousine vehicles that were produced with a lower control arm ball joint containing a one piece bearing; and 1990-1996 ford crown victoria police, fleet, and ngv vehicles and 1990-1996 lincoln town car limousine vehicles that have been serviced with either a ball joint containing the one-piece bearing or a front lower control arm containing a ball joint with a one-piece bearing. The one-piece bearing within the lower control arm ball joint can weaken slowly during use and eventually crack. This could result in separation of the ball and cap of the joint, allowing the control arm to drop to the ground.consequence:if this occurs while the vehicle is moving, reduced steering control could occur, increasing the risk of a crash.remedy:dealers will replace the lower control arm ball joints (2).notes:owner notification is expected to begin january 18, 1999. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673. Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236). We never receive notice of any recall.however, when i attempted to call ford customer service they could not find this recall or my vin.therefore, i am respectfully requesting that you add our vehicle vin to this recall for repair.
