If i would not have been outside in car when the smoking started under my dash by the headlight switch the car would have burned to the ground but luckily it was just the wiring harness that was hurt this is a dangerous situation property damage was to my 99 lincoln navigator with wires burning.

1999 lincoln navigator-spark plugblowout.
It seems that this issue that i'm having with my vehicle already was raised and dismissed. However, i very much would like this investigation re-opened because i believe that the problem is under reported. I own a 1999 lincoln navigator and every time it rains, my windshield wipers, windows and locks stop working. This happened as i was driving so needless to say i slowed down to almost a crawl and subsequently was pulled over by the police. They helped me to pull my vehicle off the road and i had to wait until it stopped raining before i can drive back home. No doubt that this is a hazard not only for me, but for other motorists as well. The very next day, i got in my truck, turned the ignition, the truck started however it did not remain started. It was as if it was out of gas. I had the truck towed to a lincoln dealership, and was told that there is a windshield leak and it leaked on the gem module and fuse box harness and would have to be replaced. I talked to a auto glass expert who told me that eventhough the dealer was stating that the leak is from the windshield, it is not. According to him, he has taken out, resealed and reinstalled windshields only to have those customers come back very angry due to the leak still occured.this problem was reported by ford expedtion owners, however i don't see any evidence that complaints from navigator owners were considered and/or investigated.it's interesting that i am having this same problem, but with a different model of ford/lincoln. I feel very strongly that this issue deserves a second look. Furthermore, because this is such a costly ($1,800.00) repair, it is my prayer that the government will step in and make this auto maker take responsibility and issue a recall and have the problem correctly identified, it may not be leakage from the windshield, and subsequently fixed. I ask this in safety of all of us. Even if i trade this vehicle in, someone else, just like me, will purchase this danger.
Vehicle stalls without any warning, usually when making a left turn.
The windshield wipers come on and off intermittently without being switched on/off.they seem to have a mind of their own.the rear wiper does not come on at all most times, even when turned on.also, the odometer lcd readout comes on and off intermittently. Several light on the dash controls panels come on and off at will as well.it just seems that there is several problems with the wiring systems or possibly in the computer.however, since it only does it intermittantly you cannot plan to check it with the dealer, because there is no telling when it will occur and how long it will last.
Rear wiper does not always come on, odometer lights go out, door ajar light comes on when all doors are closed, radio sometimes will not turn up, interior cabin lights come on, seat warmers do not come on.all of this happen intermittently, with no warming, rhtme or reason.unable to have diagnosed, but constantly read entries of same problems from other owners....can be a safety risk when i cannot clear rear window of rain/mud.

1999 lincoln navigator-spark plugblowout.
Water, vapor, condensation keeps getting on to the coil on plug assembly on the passenger side of my engine causing water build up, electrical failure, misfires and spark plug explosions in to my engine, causing fragments of metal and plastic to fire in to my engine.this has happened to me several times now, been repaired, and continues to happen.despite 6 separate technical service bulletins, ford / lincoln have not recalled this problem with the 1999 to 2006 5.4l v8 engine, leading to thousands of people like me having to continually fix this problem, which is caused by a design / safety flaw in the engine / component construction.i was nearly killed today on the freeway because the truck hesitated and misfired while i was going up a large hill, stuck between two semi-trucks and i couldn't move out of the way due to failure to accelerate.

This vehicle has been in three times for the same problem...and was just towed in for the fourth time, same problem.the vehicle has a serious safety defect and i am refusing to drive it.dealer cannot pinpoint the problem and admitted that there is some sort of unknown computer glitch. While drivingconsumer'ssongot caught on the rear seat belt which tightened around his neck. Consumer had to cut the beltin order to release her son.
When leaving work on evening of 07-08-99, attempted to place seatbelt into latch and latch failed to work.i was concerned that if i had been involved in an accident i could have possibly been ejected from my vehicle.incidently, in 1997, i was involved in a car accident and the person driving the other vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected and killed.i run high anxiety levels concerning wearing seatbelts.i feel that my safety and my families safety is at hand and this problem could happen again.
A rear seated passenger in my lincoln navigator is unable to physically reach the release lever in order to exit the vehicle.another person must first release the seat in front to exit.as a father and a physician, this is a very scary situation.in an emergency, that rear passenger will be trapped back there.i was so concerned about this that i removed the console present between the "captain chair" in this oem configuration.now my kids easily walk out.i received no help from the company in how to do this and have not heard from their engineers regarding this easily remedied problem.the simple fix is to reposition the release lever in a physicallyappropriate location.we do love the car otherwise. Please respond.

This is a two part complaint. The first incident occurred in december of 2002. My wife was in a parking lot of a major shopping center and while she was driving down a parking lane, she found an open spot in which she started to turn to the left. As she turned, she heard a popping sound, then she was unable to move the car.when i arrived, i noticed that the sway bar pin and the tie rod on the passenger side were disconnected from the wheel.i inspected the area around the car and found no pot holes or curbs close to the vicinity of vehicle. It was towed to the local lincoln dealer and the replaced the parts under warranty without much explanation other than my wife must have hit a curb.they only replaced the damage components and reported that the other side was inspected but looked fine.the second incident just occured a week prior to this complaint. My wife was traveling to her job and was moving at a speed of approx. 20 miles an hour. She was in the left lane when the car began to violently shake and bounce. She was pulled into the left lane of oncoming cars, so she did not stop the car, but rather let the car take her into a side street.a police officer witnessed the incident and when i arrived we found the sway bar pin and tie rod to be disconnected on the drivers side.we had a tow truck pick up the truck and had the entire front suspension and wheels checked for any other damage. My wife and i have 3 kids in which we drive in this vehicle and it has considerably shaken our confidence. Luckily, in both instances, nobody was hurt and the speeds involved were low. After searching your archives i did find other defect investigations into tie rods for ford-made vehicles such as the f150, expedition and navigator.

I was driving my 1999 lincoln navigator and suddenly my rear suspension failed resulting in a tremendous amount of bouncing up and down cause a very serious control problem. Luckily there were no other vehicles around to cause a serious accident. I was able to get the vehicle home by driving slowly and scheduled an appointment with my local mechanic. He discovered that the compressor relay and connector plug was melted/burned and found the main air line also melted causing the sudden loss of air pressure. There were also numerous melted and burnt wiring. He was able to install a temporary air line to get the suspension temporarily working and recommended that i take it to a lincoln garage for further work. I scheduled an appointment with the local lincoln garage and he advised me that the relay, connector and wiring harness needed replaced/repaired. After a wait of 2 weeks he was able to get the parts and do the repair work. The parts replaced were: relay,p/n 2c013/a, cable connector, p/n 14488/a, cable connector p/n 14488/b, and wire assy p/n 14s11/ha. I am very shocked that there was no fusing mechanism to keep this from happening and the fact that the air line was routed over the relay allowing it to melt and get a hole in it. I have the defective parts and would like to know how to contact someone in the lincoln organization for reimbursement for a situation that should never had happened. I can see the relay failing but i cannot see why there wasn't a fusible link to prevent the fire or a re-routing of the air line to keep it from getting damaged.

On june 20, 2001 i turned on my lincoln navigator and the entire car began shaking out of control and i heard a very loud noise coming from the front of the car.i called ford and informed them of the problem and they asked me to drive the vehicle to the nearest dealership.i told ford that i was not able to drive vehicle because the entire vehicle was shaking out of control.i then arranged a flat bed to pick up the car the next morning.i took the vehicle to courtesy ford in the bronx, new york.i told the service personnel of the three problems i was having with the vehicle.the engine, the driver side powered window was not functioning and the winshield wiper recall needed service.i was told by the service coordinator that someone would call me the next day.no oe called and i was forced to consistently call the dealer all day to get an opportunity to speak to someone.i finally spoke to the asst. Service manager(dave) and he told me that the engine had failed and ford instructed to replace the engine with a brand new one.i asked him what exactly had gone wrong with the engine and he told me that "things like this happen all the times, and the only way to resolve this problem was to replace the engine"i asked him again what happen to the engine and he responded my telling me that a spark plug fell into the engine, and the engine failed.thirty four days later i was asked to pick up the car.i did not receive and paperwork, the winshield wiper recall service was never done and the powered window problem still existed, and i contine hearing squeaky sounds coming from the front of the car.i've called ford several times and i've requested a new car and i've also asked them to log all my complaints(fordref#612921390).ford has told me that ford only replaces a car in extreme cases and at this point we did not qualified for a brand new replacement.i told them that replacement an engine is pretty extreme.

Several months to a year ago, i received a recall notice from ford/lincoln telling me to have my tire rods inspected.i did so the last time the care was in for service and was told all was ok and they didn't need to be replaced. Last night, while driving near rfk stadium in washington, dc, the tire rod on my 99 lincoln navigator severed from the vehicle causing me to lose control of the vehicle and steering.shortly before incident i had been on the beltway going 55 mph.at the time of the incident, i was only traveling 25-30 mph.by luck, the car veered into a exxon gas station.in talking with the lincoln service dealer this morning, they seem to be well aware of the problem and informed me that there really is no way to tell if the tire rod joint is worn by inspection.they seem to imply that the problem is well known but that other than the letter, there has been no recall.the vehicle has only 80,000 miles'most of which are traveled on the highway (between ocean city and bethesda md.the part in question was replaced at the exxon station last night and i took the vehicle and part this morning to manhattan lincoln in rockville, md.they suggested replacing the other tire rod (at cost to me) and then informed me later in the day that the sway bar links also needed replacing at a cost of $275 for both.apparently one of them was loose or had already come off.not sure if the incident last evening cause this.i request that nhtsa look into this matter asap.i travel back and forth to ocean city, md almost every weekend and am convinced that had this incident occurred at 55 mph or while traveling over the chesapeake bay bridge, you'd probably have four fatalities to investigate (my wife and two children).the vin number is [xxx].please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions.sincerely,[xxx].updated 07/19/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Air suspension compressor failure @ 40,000 miles.
Air suspension compressor failure.i was driving along in the vehicle when all of a sudden the back of the vehicle dropped & started bouncing up and down which caused me to swerve..luckily there wasn't anything in my path.when i had the vehicle serviced iwas told that this particular component fails in over 80% of lincoln navigators and now the dealer is selling an "upgraded part" because they're aware that the one installed in the vehicles was defective and i'm wondering why a recall hasn't been done already.
My daughter and i both own 1999 navigators.i have had one tire split and she has already had to replace two and now the third tire is defective.we believe the tires are defective and should be replaced. The tread has split on all these tires.dt
On january 11, 1999my husband and myself had pulled off the lot of the dealership when we came to the red light about 100 feet away from the dealership .when the light turned green and we proceed thru the light the left rearside of the vehicle went bomb and the tire rolled down the street beside us.
Continental and the dealer conspired together and my first tire was thrown away in 2 days against my wishes.no safety defect noted.
I was under the impression that the tires would last at least 60 thousand miles, with reasonable care, however we were wrong.two of the tires now have plugs in them, one of which we are afraid to use, since weve had to have two different dealers put plugs in on two different occasions during a recent trip. While driving consumer experienced poor drivability, upon inspection he noticed that the left rear tire had a 8-10 inch split down the middle, to the belts (17 in firestone tires).nlm
I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel at approximately 60+ mph.i thought i needed a front end alignment so i scheduled it at the time i had the engine oil changed.after the oil was changed, i was informed the rear right tire was "bad" and the tire was replaced by the dealer free of any cost to myself.i do not have the vibration any more.i am happy with the replacement policy but am concerned with the structual integrity of the other tires.in light of the recall by continental of only "16" inch tires, i think it might be prudent to review history on the "17" inch tires.( dot number: tire size: p255/75r17 )
I have the same symptoms with my tires that the other recalled tires have. (dot number: ad70449228tiresize: p245/75r16)
Two original tires 'shreaded' beyond repair within first year.same defect as ford motor company has experienced with its firestone tires.the failure appears the same as what has been noted in lincoln navigators sold in saudi arabia. (tiresize: 16 inch)( dot number: tire size: 16 inch )
(1) nothing before it happened.(2) i was driving to work at 10:50 pm and as i made a right hand turn into the parking lots at about 5-10 mph, i heard a clank and bump bump. I turned and saw nothing and slowly moved forward where i saw a tire in the road behind me. I turned around and went back and saw it was a good tire and rim about the size i had on my car. I looked under my car and to my suprise my spare was gone. I picked up the tire and metal bracket that held it. I could not find anything else. The next day in daylight i looked under my car and found that the cable that holds the spare tire was broken at the point where it came out of the bracket. (3) i took the car to my local dealer and he didn't look at the car but said he had never heard of this happening before. I asked him to fix it free and pass this info up the ladder as this was a serious accident waiting to kill someone. I told him the day before i had been driving on the interstate @70 mph and if it came off then i was sure i could have killed someone. He said i was lucky, but he couldn't fix it for free and my car was 5 years old. I told him this was a safety issure and the spare tire had never been put on the car. Nothing he could do but gave me an 800 number to call. I did and got nowhere with them either, i did get a reference # 0420083070. I'm almost scared to drive the car, asthe spare tire could come off and kill someone.

I hadtread separate on a second tire on my vehicle (the first tire tread seperated about six months ago).this happened while on a freeway traveling at 65-70 miles per hour.a chunk of tread about 12 -16 inches long ripped completely off of the tire.i then had to change the tire on the side of the freeway with cars and truck passing me at 70 miles per hour.this was an extremely scary situation.the passenger in my vehicle was also extremely distressed. The tires tread completly separated from the sidewalls. All that was left on the rim after stopping were the two sidewalls standing like doughnuts on the edges of the rim. Other drivers saw chunks of rubber flying out from under the vehicle and thought i had run over a tractor trailer shed recap. (dot number: 70 449 338tiresize: p245/75/r1)

Since purchasing the car in may 1999, i have had no working dash lights in the car starting at 22,000 miles.i have taken the car to ford over 7 times with no fix, just a bulb replacement after the 50k warranty.the problem still exists, this problem makes the car very difficult to drive at night with no speed or fuel indicators.the chance of accident or death due to unsafe speed or running out of gas has been a constant problem with this car.i spent $46,000 for this car and it has been the worse experience in my life.
In the last five years my 255/ 75 17 contitrac tires 5 of them have blown out or come apart in some manner! the last time a few days ago was pretty close to a high speed accident 65mph there is an absolute major problem with these tires !! this is the second set that has been on this truck~! continental no longer makes this size and they are non responsive to my complaints please help.
Faulty transmission gear. This may be an older model, but with 156,000 miles, the gearshift either prevents the truck from starting, or will start rolling on its after putting truck in park and removng key. I almost lost my truck from that after i got out of the vehicle and it started rolling away. Despite its age, this problem just started.
The contact owns a 1999 lincoln navigator. The contact stated that the vehicle had not been driven at all on saturday, but at 4:30 am sunday morning they were awakened because the vehicle was on fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and will provide a fire report. The fire started underneath the hood and the contact stated that it was related to the recall for the vehicle speed control under campaign number 05v388000. The contact thought the dealer replaced the underhood speed control deactivation switch, but was not sure. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileages were 142000.
The vehicle is not able to be drove
We had driven the vehicle about one mile from the beach to a restaurant, where we parked as usual and entered to dine.we had been in the restaurant approximately 15 - 20 minutes when the waiter announced that there was a "car on fire" in the parking lot.my family and i, along with everyone else in the restaurant, rushed outside, where i was horrified to see my lincoln navigator surrounded by police cars and engulfed in flames.i have photos on my phone if necessary.the fire had very obviously started in the engine compartment and probably on the driver's side, as the front tire on that side had melted and was flat, but the other tires were all intact.i have since been made aware of a faulty switch related to the cruise control that can cause these problems.i am almost certain that we took our vehicle in and had that recall dealt with years ago.i will search for paperwork.i remember some repair being done at the dealer, but i cannot remember if it was a recall or just something they contacted us to recommend being repaired.either way, my parked vehicle was destroyed by fire while i dined.
Ongoing problem with engine stalling when applying accelerator pedal from a stop position or while starting vehicle and shifting into drive. Vehicle been into dealer shop on four occasions, and unable to locate cause.
Dt: the contact wasunable to havecruise control switch replaced under nhtsarecall 05v388000. He noted that because of a disability hedid not allow the dealer to disconnect the switch. When he spoke with the dealer and manufacturer, neither could provide a date of availability for the switch. He has not experienced a problem to date with the cruise control, but he wanted to have the switch replaced as soon as possible because of the risk of a vehicle fire.

Front wipers come on at any time. Dealer has been informed by manufacturer that they are aware of problem and the manufacturer has directed dealers not to work on problem until a fix has been identified. I was blinded by smeared bugs & dust at night leading me to have to stop on the freeway at night to clean.

The contact owns a 1999 lincoln navigator. The vehicles rear left wheel fell off in june of 2008. A tire mechanic stated that the stud broke. The wheel was repaired; however, on october 5, 2009 when he attempted to drive out of a parking lot he heard a noise, and noticed that the vehicle was leaning to the right. When he inspected the vehicle he observed that the right left wheel and therotor fell off. The manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in recall 98v095000 wheels: lugs/nuts/bolts; therefore, they were unable to assist with the repair. The failure and current mileage were 230,000. Updated 11/06/09 updated 11/09/09
