Gas gauge and electronicmessage center display erroneous fuel information that results in an unpredictable out-of-gas condition while operating the vehicle.without warning the vehicle loses power and stalls with no power for acceleration and impaired braking and steering. This unexpected out-of-gas condition due to erroneous dashboard indicators places the vehicle, driver, and occupants in jeopardy of potential personal injury and property damage. This problem is similar to tsbs bc2303970501/item sb052799 and bc105799705/item sb052859. Most recent incident occurred on dec 15, 2000 at highway speed on rte 64 at the rte 295 interchange with the fuel gauge reporting 1/4 tank of fuel when the out-of-gas condition unexpectedly occurred creating a dangerous lane changing condition with no vehicle power in an attempt to reach the shoulder. The brown's fairfax va dealership has made several unsuccessful attempts to service the problem and has failed to acknowledge the nhtsa tsbs on the fuel problem.the dealership misrepresented the service as correcting the problem and returned the vehicle with a known safety defect not properly repaired.

The head lights on the vehicle have become opaque over a few years.the consumer is concerned that the lights are not working like they should.the vehicle manufacturer and the lens manufacturer have been informed of the problem.*sc
Headlights are too bright.
Low beam light (driver's side) ceased function.owner's manual requires that only ford lincoln dealer renders repair, and the light "unit" costs $750, with labor estimated at $200 to $400 additional.vehicle:1997 ford lincoln mark viii.
I have a 97 lincoln mark viii and i was told by several ford/lincoln mercury dealers that the headlight low beam bulbs, hid 9500, are not available. I contacted the manufacturer, sylvania, and the customer service rep told me the light bulbs are no longer manufactured. What are the several thousand owners of lincoln mark viii owners expected to do? this is a blatant safety issue and should be addressed by federal authorities. I would like to speak to a ntsb representative, if available, regarding the lighting on these vehicles. Thank you for investigating this issue.
Mark viiii's manufactured during the first months of 1997 were fitted with a headlight assembly that incorporated an integral hid "low beam".this appliance was obviously intended to last the life of the vehicle.access is provided only for replacement of the halogen "high beam" bulbs.in mid-year, ford redesigned the headlamp to also permit replacement of the hid light source.it no longer supports the earlier model.the only way to restore minimally legal headlight function to my early-1997 lincoln is replace the entire assembly with a late 1997-1998 fixture.my dealer estimates the cost, including labor, at $1,150 to $1,350 per headlamp.at that price, the headlamps represent 1/3rd the value of the vehicle.this is not the cost of the failed part.this is the cost of fords failure to support a segment of its fleet and its decision to pass the cost of correcting an obvious design flaw through to consumers.the social cost is that such corporate irresponsibility endangers the public.few will pay 1/3rd the value of a car to maintain a light bulb.if ford does not honor its responsibilities, the public will operate the cars illegally.in marketing this car, ford touted the reliability to be had for $40,000.the reality is that this cars true useful economic life is not defined by the extended-life spark plugs, anti-rust protection or anything else that ford so eagerly sold, but by the longevity of a light bulb.
Headlights on my 1997 lincoln mark viii suddenly went out while driving on the highway at 70 mph causing a near fatal crash. I luckily ran off the road into a muddy grassy area and became stuckand not killed. I took it to the shop only to find i could not afford to get the lights repaired because the headlights on this car cost $1600.00. The bright lights still work, it was only the dimm lights that went out for no reason. The manufacture of these lights should be punished for selling a product that's substandard to much cheaper and safer headlights. If a pair of dimm headlights cost $1600.00 they should last a lifetime. My car has 60,000 miles. I am thinking of filing a law suit.
Dt*:the contact stated the hid headlight low beam went out on the vehicle.there is a ford recall #98b38, regarding the headlights.the vin was not included in the recall.
The headlights failed to illuminate fully.this reduced the driver's visibility.tsb 604850was issued (headlight replacement campaign).the vinwas not included.*sc
Replace head light assembly, cost $700.00 ford should pay for this.since it was their fault for not stocking parts. Used parts were used.i have not way of knowing how long this will last.if my other side goes out i am facing another expense of replacing it since it is the law to drive with head lights on when raining or through a construction zone here in pa. Why should i as a consumer have to pay such a high cost to repair these lights.if i had known of this problem i would have made sure that i did not buy one of these cars, made in jan. Through march. I feel ford should be responsible because of its design flaw. *nlm
In november of 2006, the passenger headlight, low beam, went out in my 1997 lincoln mark viii.approximately one month later, the driver's side, low beam, also failed.i have checked with my local ford dealership, and two other dealerships.there are no replacement parts for this problem, period, in the entire united states.when you check with after market suppliers, you are told you have to go through ford.since the spring of 2007 i call the local dealership monthly to check on when parts will be available.each month, they check their data base, and learn that the replacement kit, costing hundreds of dollars, has been pushed back a month before it will be available.the current target date of availability is october 2007.so, for almost a year now, i have a lincoln that cannot be driven at night, nor can it be repaired at any price.i wrote a letter to ford motor company early in 2007 about this, and received a form letter telling to go to my local ford dealer for parts.
When the driver's side low-beam hid headlamp began failing, i took it to the dealer, since parts are not available anywhere else.then i found out that parts will cost $780 ($200 for the headlamp + $580 for an "upgraded" mounting assembly which is required due to parts obsolescence and a lincoln engineering mistake).after some complaining, i got ford and the dealer to reduce cost to $380 for parts plus $120 for labor.$500 to replace a headlight (required safety feature is absolutely unacceptable!
The contact owns a 1997 lincoln mark viii.the contact stated that the front driver side low beam headlight failed.when he attempted to replace the bulb, he could not get the bulb unscrewed.the dealer replaced the headlight kit and charged him $700.the failure mileage was 49,941 and current mileage is 50,000.the consumer requested to have the recall performed on the vehicle pertaining to the speed control deactivation. Water keeps building up in the headlights, reducing night visibility. Dealer has changed the lamp three times.
Owner was driving on the freeway and experiencedelectrical problem. All the head lights went out. Owner pulled over to the right. Then, contacted the dealership, and was told that the repairs for this defect would cost $2200.00.
Both hid headlight bulbs failed within a 2 week period.the bulbs were $175 each.
1997 lincoln mark 8 headlights went out while driving. *mr the consumer was driving on the freeway when the incident occurred.this almost caused a major accident because it was pitch black darkness.the consumer had to bang on the component in order for the light to come on.the consumer was informed that the transformers and the bulbs had blown all at once.the consumer was also informed that others have experienced this same problem with lincoln vehicles. *sc
Neither of my two low beam headlights work so i'm having to use my high beam lights which i'm sure is difficult for oncoming traffic. I am constantly searching the internet and local sources to replace my headlights.
The head light bulb went out, i took the vehicle to have it replaced. The orginal est to fix with part and labor was $100. The dealer then contacted me an stated that ford no longer made the part (light bulb) and the replacement assy would cost $435 per side. This is outragus to fix a baic safetyfeature. I called lincoln and was told that 'that the way it is" and they offerd to pay 1/2 of the repair cost. Still my cost would be$200.
Hid lights keep burning out and ruining the lenses on my lincoln mark viii 1997 lsc.
The contact owns a 1997 lincoln mark viii.the contact stated that the low beam headlights are known to burn out.the parts are no longer being manufactured so the only way to repair them is with a kit.the contact stated that this seemed like an expensive temporary remedy.in addition, the blend door, which opens the control for hot and cold air to defrost the windshield, does not work.the manufacturer was notified and stated that it was a safety issue.the dealer stated that this could be repaired at the contact's expense.the contact feels that he should not have to pay for the repair because it was caused by a manufacturer defect.there have been numerous complaints regarding this failure, but no decision on how the contact's vehicle will be repaired.he will wait until a recall is issued for this failure.the failure mileage was 61,000 and current mileage was 61,985. No summary listed for above vehicle.
Low beam headlight (hid)on right side has failed and no replacements are offered by factory or dealer.
Driver's side low-beam headlight burnt out.discovered that there are no "after-market" headlight bulbs available.low-beam headlights must be dealer-serviced.fortunately dealer will repair under 50,000 bumber to bumber warranty.however, low-beam headlights for this model require replacing an entire assembly, not just the bulb.informed by dealer that this component is no longer being manufactured by oem supplier and is now on national backorder.auto being operated without headlight for 2-months now and still no replacement parts.major problem is that i operating an auto without headlights is a moving violation in georgia and therefore should not be driven after dark.
Dt*: the contact stated the front low beam headlight burned out. When the dealer was contacted, the dealerdetermined the headlight was on backorder.the manufacturer offered to place an order, although the part was on backorder for two months.
I recently took my 97 mark viii to the shop to replace the low intensity beam.the cost of this item spiraled from $262.00 to $1493.00 within a matter of hours to replace one set of lights. This is highway robbery and usury at the highest level .*la
The drivers side, low beam headlight burnt out about 6 months ago.upon trying to replace the bulb, i learned that the bulb was only available through the dealer.i contacted 2 authorized lincoln dealers & received estimates varying in the ranges of $79-$835.after much research, i discovered that the $835 estimate was correct.in mid production of the 97 lincoln mark viii the ford motor company changed vendors on the headlight & the first system utilized is not compatible w/the second system.hence, i need to pay to convert my car to the alternate system as they do not stock after market parts for the cars produced during the first half of the year.i do not have a problem w/paying $79 to replace the bulb that needs to be replaced.i feel it is ludicrous to pay $835 to replace an entire system due to incompetenc on behalf of the manufacturer.if you produce a car, you should stock parts for some amount of time.the ford motor company disagrees.at some point, i will need to replace my passenger headlight, then, i will have nearly $2000 invested in headlight replacement.i have made the obeservation on your website that other 97 mark viii owners have experienced the same problem.is there anything that a consumer can do to encourage ford to accept financial responsibility for this design flaw?additionally, my door handle boke in half- a solid piece of metal just broke right in half.the dealer says it is normal wear and tear!
Excessive yellowing of the lens for both left and right headlight assemblies. This "haze" acts as a diffuser, effectively diminishing night-time drive ability due to the lack of available light passing through said lens.
The consumer stated the head light lenses were fogged, which limited visibility.
While traveling at night consumer tried to turnheadlights on ,and they would not come on. Consumer has yet to contact dealer.please provide any further information.
Tail light failed.
Gas gauge indicator failed, it didnot provide the right information.the vehicle would not with less than 1/4 tank of gas, the consumer added two gallons of gas and the vehicle still did not start, the vehicle was pushed to level for towing and then it started, the problem happened when the vehicle was parked on an angle to the left. The dealer replaced several componets such as the instrument cluster and gas tank, but the problem continued.
Vehicle failed to start.fuel dumping problem resulted in excessive fuel flow to the cylinders causing engine flooding, washing the protective oil lubricant from the cylinder walls, contaminating the spark plug, and causing engine damage.
Problems with fuel tank readings on gas gauge.*mrthe consumer stated the gas gauge moved erraticallywhile driving. The cluster fuel gauge and fuel sending unit was replaced, but the problem remained the same.

I have had this car in for this same repair for about seven or eight or more times. Each and every time the dealership claims to have fixed the problem, but the problem still exists. They state that because the seats are working properly at the time that they cannot pinpoint the problem, although the car has been in to be fixed when the seats were not working properly, and they still failed to fix them. I have spent alot of time and gas to try on my end to get this resolved, but to no avail. I would just like to have this problem fixed to whatever extent that the lincoln company had to go to, to do so. Even if it means starting from when the seats were originally installed to track down the problem. Please note that this vehicle is still under warranty. Your prompt direct attention to this matter is so greatly appreciated. If you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact me either by phone or e-mail. My e-mail address is [xxx]. Winshield washer bottom, broke, assembly includes signal light, wippers, low/high beem and flashers switch, steering wheel and air bag have to be removed to replace part, about two hours of labor and $200, according to dealer.dealer should made this a two piece part to make job easierand less spensive.driver's ajusment has to be reseted every time you start the vehicle, cause unknown.
Brake's light is on and won't go off. Brake light in the middle doesn't work.
Pedalwent allthe way to the floor and there were no brakes at all. Pulled over to check there were 2 pieces of brake tubing dragging and protruding ,they were severed in half.
When making sudden stop or braking hard vehicle will pull to left or right.this defect gets worse in rainy conditions, causingloss of control which could result in an accident .intermittent problem. Dealer has changed brake pads, and cut rotors. Defect is still occurring.
Steering wheel sensor would make a grinding noise while operating and would not lock in position. Dealer was notified and refused to assist because it not a recall, and out of warranty.
Vehicle was traveling down a busy urban street and while approaching an intersection, the driver begin turning slightly to change lanes and the steering wheel separated from the steering column, leaving the vehicle with no steering.
Steering wheel begins to vibrate at around 50 mph.ride becomes harsh.
Power adjustment steering colums act erractically and will adjust by itself while consumer is driving . Dealer cannot duplicate defect, and cannot determine cause.water pump leaked causing low coolant light to illuminate.door ajar switch faulty and was replaced.
Steering wheel comes lose and wobbles.there is an automatic adjuster that allowsdriver to tilt and adjustwheel.dealer has been notified.
I got he vehicle serviced to repair the cup holder, they told me i put change in the cup holder that dropped into the mechanism that made it not close properly.this is not true.i didn't say anything because it was repaired free of charge. The second time it was repaired the dealer gave me a hard time about the cost to repair it again and the mechanic/tech. Said that i put q-tips & change in the cup holder causing it to not close.which is not true.i got bruises on my arm from hitting it against the holder as it was summertime and i was wearing a short sleeved shirt.i looked at the holder myself and noticed that the track on which it is suppose to close was not straight and told them so.i didn't bring it in because every time i brought the car in for a repair/ oil change, et. They would keep it for a week.i got a loaner the first couple of times but, after the agument anbout paying for the cup holder to be repaired they were rude and wanted me to pay for the loaner whe they were the ones that werte not repain\ring my car in a timely fashion.i felt intimidated.

While driving atapproximately 60-65mph there is vibration in steering wheel, and steering wheel moves back and forth.on bumpy roads vibration seems worse.appears to be loose or out of balance, dealer adjusted suspension/ nuts and bolts, areas were tightened.then there was a popping noise. When popping noise went away, vibration came back and so forth. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem.
Driving vehicle at 75 mph highway speeds there is a harmonic vibration that occurs, causing poor visibilty out ofrear window. Dealers are aware of this problem.
The problem started a year of two after purchase.it abruptly jerks to the right on left turns from a stand still or while driving on the highway.it's been worked on at least 4 times by the dealership but with no success.i have reported it to lincoln customer service but got no help.

Even in the slightest amount of snow, the vehicle fails to have any traction.this is regardless of the traction control.it appears that the large high torque engine combined with the rear wheel drive and minimal rear weight causes this problem.
The keys are not available at any dealership or afternarket. The contact owns a 1997 lincoln mark viii.the contact stated that the blinder door was inoperative which will not allow heat to come from the defroster..the failure has been occurring for four years, but was never repaired because the part is made out of plastic.the contact is hoping that the manufacturer changes the part to metal.due to the blinder door not working, the defroster fails to work properly.the current and failure mileages were 92,000. Updated 3/5/09 updated 03/10/09.
The a/c blend door module arm has failed on my car; this arm controls the amount of heat that is sent through the a/c, heating and defrost vents.if it does not operate properly, it will not remove frost or fog from the windshield, thus creating an unsafe condition.
Known issue with manufacturer.failure prevents windshield defrosting and climate control.dt
The climate control will allow the user to select heat and which area for it to come out but once the blend door actuator has been switched to air conditioning mode it will not turn back to the heater mode.this inhibits the ability to defrost the windsheild and heat the car.mr
1997 lincoln mark viii defroster/heater/ac blend door:the blend door on my 1997 lincoln has malfunctioned.this is a very common problem on all mark viii lincolns causing a malfunction in the windshield defroster.there is no heat applied to the windshield while attemting to defrost.lincoln/ford has ignored this very common problem and has offered no help.i am suggesting a recall be made on all 1997 and 1998 lincolns.
This blend door part on almost all 97 & 98 model of the mark viii fails it is a saftey factor.when this part fails, there is no heat with no heat the de-froster does not work!!. How many times, havehad to use a towel to wipe the window, so i could see! the part is about $30.00 but the labor can run between $400 and $600.dt
Blend door part failure for climate control system.there is no funcitonal defogger.this is a very common problem with mark viii's and i am just making it known that mine is faulty as well and i belive it is a saftey hazard.i know there have been many other entries rearding this topic.lets make something happen. Mr
With the blend door actuator broken, the windshield can not properly clear due to fog and ice as there is no heat coming through the defroster ducts.dt
The blend door actuator which allows warm air to be directed to the windshield to defrost it broke at a very bad time. My windshield was fogged up on the interstate and when i put the climate control on defrost, all i got was cold air. Not a very safe set of conditions. I have since read that over 40 of my lincoln car club members have had the same part break. Some report as many as 3 failures. The lincoln dealership quotes the repair at approx. $700.00. Ts
The blend door lever is a common safety complaint with these cars.it is made of cheap plastic and many owners have replaced this part at considerable cost.my experience with this problem occurs on cold days with high humidity.the windows fog and when you turn on the defroster, cold air comes out and the fog remains or gets worse. This is a safety issue as how am i to see where i am driving with windows that are foggy?since this occurs while driving down the interstate am i to constantly clean the windows while driving.thereby creating another safety issue?please look into this problem.it is a safety issue and needs to be addressed as soon as possible.dt

The keys are not available at any dealership or afternarket. Imagine losing your keys in a strange town.it took the dealer 5 days to replace the key they lost.as for the blend door, go to the site markviii.org and there are many complaints about this componant that is only $30.00 but costs $800.00 to replace due to the labor to get at the part.with as many failures the dot needs to do something asap about this.dt
When proceeding to turn on the heat in my car to defrost the windshield i discovered that my heat did not work, and that the a/c only blew cold air.this is a common problem in the lincoln mark viii.the problem is caused by the blend door breaking over time.this has been an issue that ford has known about; but, will not provide reimbursement for repairs needed.this repair is needed on almost all mark viii's after time.
This part fails on almost all 97 & 98 model years for these cars.the replacement part fails as well.it can be a bad issue in temperature where the window defogger is necessary.often i have to stop along the road and wipe my windows down as the defogger doesn't operate properly due to this failed part.the part is about $30.00 but the labor can run over $700.00.dt
Couldn't get my windshield defrosted.
There is a part in the heater/defroster on the lincoln mark viii that is prone to failure causing loss of heat or a/c for use in defrosting the windshield. This part has failed repeatedly, and as quickly as 1 year after replacement by the dealer. I purchased a 1997 lincoln mark viii within in the past month from weisleder lincoln mercury, among the problems with the vehicle was there was no heat. The dealer repaired the the blend door, but i am concerned that this repair will be necessary again in short time because the construction/ design of the part is poor.
Car has constant low grade wheel vibration, and runs like a cheap foreign import
All 4 wheels are cracking from the hub outward, failure is increasing gradually, but at a definate hazardous situation,i think the wheels should last for more than 4 years.
