Well i was driving down the freeway when all of sudden for no apparent reason there was an explosion in the passenger seat next to me. I was shocked by the loudness and i just sort of sat there in a daze and as i looked over i noticed white dust everywhere completely filling the cab of my car. I was driving so i had to split my attention between the road and this explosion next to me. Just as i began to come around to my full senses i noticed i was partially deaf in one ear from the blast and also somewhat blinded by the amount of smoke and powder which filled the cab. I realized that the best thing would be to pull over since my initial reaction to the blast was that my car was on fire. I couldn't get to the shoulder of the freeway since i was in the fast lane. I opened the sunroof and this allowed most of the powder and smoke to escape from the top of the car. Finally with some of the smoke cleared i was able to focus on the road and also do a quick assessment of the blast which had just occurred in my vehicle with me in it while i'm driving. I saw the cause of the blast was the passenger side seat airbag had deployed. I saw how the whole seat had been shifted by the blast and how the seat itself had been completely destroyed. What i saw was the canvas colored bag releasing a whiter powder like a volcano as the pressure escaped from the bag to deflate. I still have a slight ringing in my ears. I hope the ringing goes away soon. My passenger seat is destroyed and i have absolutely no responsibility behind this what-so-ever. What can i do?

I am concerned that there was a recall on the 2003 ford thunderbird as well as "some lincolns" for valve cover leaking oil into the spark plugs. This causes the vehicle to burn oil and fill the cabin with bad gases. It requires a consumer to spend appr. $700.00 to fix; replacing the valve cover gasket and probably needing the spark plugs that are filled with and burning oil replaced on top of this cost. The 2002 lincoln ls has this exact same problem, made at the same assembly plant with the same parts the year prior to the recall but i was told by ford customer relations that not enough people complained to include this particular vehicle.the current recall/ "customer satisfaction program" through ford motor is: 07m07 and it requires ford to fix the problem 10 years or up to 100k miles.it is disappointing to leave this burden on customers who take care of their vehicles and come to find out that there is a known defect.

Vehicle in firestone, checking why heat blowing cool air, overheated twice since the repairs car has overheated 5 times, every time returned to shop they can't find a problem.

I was driving down the highway at 50 mph when i heard a loud noise coming from the back passenger side. Then i felt the car go out of control and i managed to safely get the car to the shoulder. My passenger door side airbag came out. When i got out of the car my tire was almost completely of the rim. I had my car towed to the repair shop and they said i needed a new axle, wheel bearing, control arm, rotor, rim and tire. Upon further inspection they realized the rim went through the underside of trunk and damaged battery and electrical components. They estimated it would cost about $3,000 to fix not including the body damage. I just replaced the right front hub assembly and control arm in feb. 2011. I have replaced engine coils and valve covers numerous times.

Purchased 2002 lincoln ls with the v8 motor and got extended warranty from mepco " vcs premier" ultimate warrant corp. 2002 ls overheated. Dealership replaced thermostat for $130. Drove the car less than a mile from the dealership and it overheated again. Took it back to ford and they now said the hydraulic cooling fan (hcf) is bad. They said it tested good when replacing thermostat. How can the hcf just go bad? the car still overheats even with the new fan. The new fan with labor will cost me $1000. Plus the engine still overheats. Why did they not see this when they did the diagnostics testing? my ls is still overheating and $1130 spent and they don't know what to do. Why?

A month later it started doing the same thing, it shutters when i reach the speed of 40 mph and it idles like a semi. I have yet to take it in, i rarely drive it because of it. Vehicle had burning oil smell coming from engine compartment , valve cover gaskets were leaking oil into spark plug wells, requiring spark plug replacement and possible coil pack damage if not gaskets not replaced.this just after a 60,000 multi-point inspection, oil change, air filter change, fuel filter change and fuel induction svc at another lincoln dealer. Lincoln should recall all ls's and replace the gaskets at no cost in order to prevent vehicle stalling at highway speeds, as coil packs and plug damage can occur and cause loss of power.

No matter what is done the checktransmission and everything error comes up and car shifts hard and slips i see i am not the only one having this problem seems all of the ls cars are doing the same thing.

I was driving down the street went to a stop light stopped and as i proceeded to go it started sounding like a bus the sound underneath the hood of a car and it was acting like it was slipping i pulled over turn my car off got back in and started going again and it got louder the noise didit sounded like a big busand it felt like it waspulling me dragging me backlike as if i had the emergency brake on or somethingbut i did not. Then i started to smell something burning light oil or something

The transmission slips after it gets to 40 mph from 5th gear to 4th gear.

The contact owns a 2002 lincoln ls. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle would not shift from fourth gear to fifth gear. The contact also stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the power transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 125,000.

Took my 2002 lincoln into dealer to see why i was smelling hot engine oil they told me the valve cover gaskets leak on both sides of engine. Asked why both the service traction control light and abs light and occasionally brake like stay on while operating the car, was told the sensor was bad and needed replaced. Upon inspection they found the transmission cooling line was leaking. My car has only approx. 80,000 miles on it.i feel that the leaking oil could cause a fire due to the gaskets leaking and what could happen if the transmission oil dumped while operating, could any of these problems cause a serious accident while operating on public highways or freeways.

My car has numerous parts that tear up repeatedly, within a 6 months time.valve cover gasket had replaced twice within a 6 months time. The coil packs go up very often. I hadpanel buttons just tear up for no reason three times! wheel caps replaced numerous times. Overheating issues, door locking issues, battery replaced twice within 2 years time. Ac issues, (i never used my ac..at all) . This car has a lot of problems on the t.s.bulletin. I contacted ford in reference to the multiple issues i was having with the car, the company representatives told me to take the complaint to the establishment of which i had been dealing with. Then they said lincoln is an independent owned establishment so i am totally confused by this whole ordeal, they know that they have had a lot of multiple problems out of that car. And they refuse to recall some of those (as i would say) hazardous issues. I was at the dealer 2 weeks ago, i was conversing with a rep. At the dealership and he was telling me how the lincoln ls was their most problem vehicle, and cash maker for repairs. (oh by the way.......i researched to find this site. (02) lincoln ls issues. (110,000 miles currently)ford/lincoln should be held accountable for this product. The amount of problems from many customers around the country is simply amazing. For ford to not send out recalls on the ls is simply a lack of professional business. The following problems are not isolated to myself but rather by thousands around the country.- clock spring replaced 2 times. $600 each- transmission problems, unfixed at this point. Will cost $3,000 +- window mods replaced 4 times. $400 each time- engine coils bad. $600 fix, and still doesn't run right.- thermostat issues. Replaced once for $300 and doing it again.- both front inside door handles replaced. $400 each time. These were specifically designed to fail after time after seeing them!- loud "clunking" coming from front passenger wheel. Looked at with no answer why.- car has shut down electrically driving down interstate multiple times only to start up after sitting a while. Very dangerous due to losing power steering. No answer to why.

I own a 2002 lincoln ls. The transmission seems to be a bit of a problem with this car. While i was driving on the highway, my transmission decides to give up on me in the middle of traffic while driving at 70mph. I also lost my power steering and my lights shut off. Since this happened at night, the last bit was a bit of a problem. I feel that this car is not very safe and i feel that lincoln should do something to fix this.

My transmission has a delay start/harsh engagement and slips when accelerating car is a 2002 lincoln ls v8. Model and make doesn't include ls only blackwood.

My 2002 lincoln ls v8 has broken down in numerous ways. All ignition coils have had to be replaced, two window motors, airbag connector clip, my tie rod ends are bad, my car has actually shut off completely while driving up the 15 north three times while my son was in the car with me and now my transmission has completely stopped working. When it came to fixing the airbag connector problem lincoln told me it was fixed and i went to pick up my car and it was still doing the same thing the three beeps so they fixed it for free and then told me my instrument panel on one side was burned out but the lights seems to work on it when i turn them on. They wanted to charge me 800 dollars for that but i refused. The ignition coil replacement was roughly 1000 dollars and i am waiting on my estimate for my transmission. Both window motors were 200 dollars a piece. I have had numerous taillights replaced and actually had a door lock jam closed on me. I truly feel that this car is a safety hazard for me and my son if it turns completely off at 65 miles an hour on a freeway with my son in the car.

The contact owns a 2002 lincoln ls.while driving approximately 65 mph on normal road conditions the vehicle accelerated without intention, and then down-shifted. The vehicle was being repaired for the malfunction. The failure and current mileages were 90,000.

2002 lincoln ls 4.0 v8 (50k miles) - transmission disengages at any speed.also, it shifts very hard, when driving and when putting shift lever into reverse and drive.lastly, it surges when in gear at idle, and upon deceleration, refuses to downshift until high (3-3500 rpms) which creates a sensation of being pulled down the road.dealer cannot replicate problems.i have seen on multiple discussion groups that this vehicle has problems with the solenoid pack and valve body creating symptoms like those described above.it is dangerous to drive the vehicle like this.

My daughter was a restrained driver on a highway ---inrush hour traffic, moving about 55mph.the car in front of her braked suddenly and when my daughter pushed on the brake it went to the floor and she had no brakes.she clipped that car rear end and swerved right'hitting a second car as she got to the shoulder.she scrapped along the metal rail for a distance and then went off the road in to a gully and hit a pole and an dirt embankment.both air bags deployed.the lightpole did not look damaged, i think the polemust have had a large cement base, based on the extent and shape of the front end damage. The car is totaled.the air bags did a great job. She has a bad sprain on her ankle that she was trying to brake with and sore everywhere.a family member works at ford .he asked me to check the brake fluid since both front and rear brakes failed.i checked the brake peddle and it went to the floor without any resistance. I checked the brake reservoir and it was full.my family member told me to submit this report.

While driving 35 mph on the truman parkway the car suddenly accelerated as fast as it would go. Brakes failed and car went out of control.after avoiding to hit 5 o6 cars it side swiped another car then veered to the right and came to a stop on a wet grassy area.in 2 previous incidents the engine revved up at a red light and i almost hit the car in front of me.

2002 lincoln ls , air bag warning light continues to stay on. Have had to drive car for 3 yrs like this while having fear of air bag not working in case of an accident.3 mechanics have tried to fix and it only turns off for a few min.s after they attempt a fix with the wiring. The mileage then began about 80,007.about 1.5 yr ago (may 2014) my ac /heater core fluid began leaking.it worsened when ac was turned high, took about 2 months before burning smell was continuously coming from engine after running ac and fluid was always dripping. 6 months (jan 2016) ago my brake pedal began fluttering when depressed.i had the control arms, ball joints and brakes/rotors replaced. The brake pedal still flutters when slowing from 30 mph quickly. My lincoln ls mileage is 86,605

In past month lincoln ls 2002 vin [xxx] experienced two low-speed (less than 10 mph) brake failures.one resulted in a minor accident.the first occurred approx. May 1, but no accident resulted.while i was attempting to stop at an intersection, brakes failed to hold and car rolled through a stop sign into the cross street.there was oncoming traffic but no accident resulted.i immediately had car evaluated by my personal mechanic and service dept at central ford in houston. Neither shop was able to diagnose and fix problem.on morning of may 31, my son was driving to his office in galveston when brakes again failed to hold during traffic stop.there was a minor accident when lincoln rear-ended another vehicle.lincoln was towed to repair shop in galveston even though the brakes appeared to function after the accident-police investigator did not believe lincoln was safe to operate given history of brake failure.there was minor damage to the front bumper of lincoln and also the back bumper of van that was rear-ended.on june 1 had lincoln towed from galveston to southwest lincoln in houston.again service shop has not been able to identify and correct root cause of brake failure incidents.service dept advised me they can find no problems with lincoln.i spoke with a senior service consultant at central ford.he said there is no history of brake failure with lincolns of this model type.i took lincoln again to southwest lincoln on monday morning and picked it up late tuesday afternoon for diagnosis and again the service shop has not been able to identify problem.inference is that i should be able to safely drive it, but the fail-to-brake incidents have convinced me that car is too dangerous to drive.i filed a complaint with lincoln and was told that it is up to the individual dealership to find problem and not lincoln's responsibility.i was told by the senior service advisor that as long as the brake failure can't be duplicated there is nothing more that can be done. Also the cruise control failed to activate during normal highway driving.

Brake failure.my wife and i purchased the 2002 lincoln ls in august, 2005 from our local ford dealership.later that month on two occasions my wife reported that the brakes failed during low speed stops. We took the vehicle back to the dealership but the service department found nothing wrong.the service department suggested she might be driving with two feet and asked that she allow her spouse to drive it for a while to see if it happened to him.on october 5, 2005 during a low speed stop at an intersection, the brakes failed again causing a minor traffic accident.there were no injuries but a claim was filed with our insurance company.again, the vehicle was taken to the dealer service department and they found nothing wrong.we took the vehicle to our personal mechanic and he was unable to find anything wrong with the braking system.on october 17, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle again while my wife was driving but did not result in an accident.on october 24, 2005 i was driving the vehicle and beginning to stop during slow speed travel and depressed the brake, the vehicle felt almost as if it accelerated and i did what i suggested that my wife do if it happened again and that was to slam the vehicle into neutral or reverse to stop it.the vehicle came to a stop.this did not result in an accident as no other vehicles were in front of me.i checked this website to find that others have experienced the same problem, reported it to the dealerships and received the same results from ford. "nothing found"i took the vehicle to the dealer again, contacted the ford company customer relations division and also filed this complaint. This is a potentially deadly defect and so far ford contends they can find nothing wrong. The vehicle will be look at again at the dealership.

The accelerator pedal was too close to the brake pedal which made it difficult to drive at times.*nlm.

Both driver and passenger side lower ball joints have fractured, been replaced and have fractured again.the stud post itself continues to fracture above the control arm mounting hole, despite both ball joints being replaced and retorqued to manufacturer recommended tightness.

While driving the lower ball joint fell apart. No injury resulted due to a low speed. After talking to a technician at the local lincoln dealer i found out that lincoln had changed the design a month after my car was built because they know they had underbuilt the car. I asked the technician if i could upgrade it to the part they used after march of 2002 and he said he didn't know he had never tried it but as far as he knew the parts would bolt up to the car the same, and the part they used on my car was failing on a regular basis and the part they used after march of 2002, as far as he knew never failed. I decided to take the lower control arm off my car and take it to a machine shop and have them machine it to fit the newer/larger stud in the ball joint used after march of 2002, everything worked out good and i have not had any problems. The original equipment on my car were 14 mm and after march they used 16 mm it's pretty simple to take it to a machine shop and upgrade your car. The cost of the work at the machine shop was only $25 and we did all the rest in the driveway in just a few hours. If you have any mechanical ability you can do this job, or you can pay about $1,500 to a shop to put the 14 mm back in and have it fail again.

My passenger door side airbag came out. When i got out of the car my tire was almost completely of the rim. I had my car towed to the repair shop and they said i needed a new axle, wheel bearing, control arm, rotor, rim and tire. They estimated it would cost about $3,000 to fix not including the body damage. I just replaced the right front hub assembly and control arm in feb. 2011. Ball joint failure. My car was built in march of 2002 and they redesigned it in april to a larger ball joint which i learned by talking to a mechanic at the lincoln dealer. He said that he fixes a lot of them built march and before but had never had to fix a post march 2002 car. I asked if he had ever upgraded it to the new design he said no, i asked if it was possible he said probably. I took the control arm off the car paid a machine shop $25 to machine it out from 14mm the old original size to 16mm the new redesigned size that lincoln was putting in it after april and bought and installed a 16mm joint and that's all there was to it. All in all it only took a few hours (depending on the machine shop) and no special tools. If you have any mechanical ability you can do this job in your driveway, i did.

On 12/19/08 approx., 1630 p.m., as we were driving the 2002 lincoln ls car, it was tremendously shaking as if it was going to fall apart and/or the tires had gone flat.we pulled over and checked the tires for flats and there were none.we then phoned the dealership to report this new problem as we informed them that we were experiencing problem after problem .the check engine light had come back on the same day we'd picked it up for that repair and remained on, along w/new issues.we were told we could bring the car into the dealership on tuesday, 12/23/08.on 12/22/08 at approx., 0540 a.m., as i was driving the vehicle on fwy 99, the car began trembling once again.i heard an overwhelming loud bang and the vehicle completely lost control.i swerved heading in the ne direction, and hit a semi-truck which was driving up alongside of my vehicle.after hitting into the side of the semi-truck, the vehicle turned facing s in the middle of the freeway facing heavy on-coming traffic. The semi-truck hit my driver's left door which knocked my vehicle off the freeway onto the median.as i attempted to drive further into the median for safety from on-coming traffic, the car would not move in the slightest. After two strangers ran to my vehicle pried the driver's door open and they physically assisted me out of the vehicle, i discovered the entire back left tire, rim and all had fallen off.this included the studs which the tire sits upon and is fastened through. After towing the vehicle to a tow yard utilizing my aaa roadside assistance, i phoned the dealership and informed them of what had occurred.i informed them that vehicle was hazardous and almost killed me.i was told not to worry about it and they would phone the tow yard and retrieve the vehicle that day.the car remains at the same tow yard to this date, and on saturday, 1/3/09, i phoned the dealership and spoke to the repair guy, he then informed myself they were not willing to take responsibility.

The contact owns a 2002 lincoln ls. The contact stated that the advanced traction control warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed but was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that they were unable to provide any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000. The vin was not available.

To answer the question in the consumer section).

2002 lincoln ls exhibiting recurring brake system defects.*mrbriefly, the warning lights for the brake system, anti-lock system and the advanced trac system illuminated under normal driving, which was followed by a hard brake with a severe pull to the side.the dealer found faulty ground wire caused a loss of battery voltage to the abs module, however the problem recurred while driving, the warning lights illuminated on the dash board, the vehicle made a hard turn to the right and a hard braking force was applied, the consumer had great difficulty trying to keep the vehicle under control, minutes later the engine shut off by itself and then restarted by itself, the dealer replaced numerous parts, but the problem recurred. Also the cruise control failed to activate during normal highway driving.

This has been a continuing saga. Started approximately date below but ongoing and more being added. Have had to replace all window assemblies due to complete failure where glass fell without warning.drivers front ball joint, clock spring ( no horn, radio, cruise control or air bag) problems with air conditioning.trunk lining continually coming down, paint clear coat, splotches, looks terrible.

Defroster/ defogger system failed. As a result, driver's visibility was impaired.

Dt:2002 lincoln ls.the consumer stated two window regulators;broke within a month of each other.the windows did not roll up or down, and they did not stay up.this started two weeks ago.the vehicle was taken to the dealership, whostated itwould cost$300 to fixthe windows , and the consumer has not had the problem fixed yet.

I have had problems with the window mechanism in my lincoln ls.several dealership service centers informed me that a lot of the lincolns were having the same problem with a faulty window mechanism but they would not cover it because the car was out of warranty.i spoke to ford and they agreed that because of the faulty mechanism they would fix the window for a discount.i paid 40 dollars for a 270 dollar repair. Recently the car has had the same problem with the faulty window mechanism.i brought it to the dealership expecting it to be covered the same as the last time.they told me they could not cover the cost of the window again.i contacted ford who told me they don't know about the problems with the faulty window mechanisms.this problem caused damage to the inside of the car and makes the car vulnerable to break ins.i am unable to feel safe in the car now because the window will not roll all the way up.i would like an investigation into this issue for myself and all the other lincoln owners having the same problem.

Replaced the window regulator on my lincoln ls2002 v8 3 times this year.

Faulty window regulators in a 2002 lincoln ls - while driving the drivers window and right rear window glass suddenly slammed down inside the doors with no warning within several days of each other. My car has 46,000 miles. This should not be happening and could be a serious safety issue. The problem is wide spread in the lincoln - do a google search for faulty window regulators in a lincoln ls - you will not believe how common a problem this is. There is a technical service bulletin for this problem - ford knows it. I had both windows repaired at a cost of 436.36 - ford agreed to pay 210.00 of the bill ........ This should be a recall - windows are not suddenly supposed to disappear.

Noticed in 2003 that the wheel hubs were beginning to crack on my chrome wheels.informed dealer. Did nothing.after a couple of years began to notice a shimmy (shake side to side) motion. Informed dealer, they suggested new tires.purchased new tires and problem reappeared.dealer suggested tires had flatspot. Tire mfg. Suggested problem with wheels.did a search for related problems such as this. Found that a recall was initiated for chrome wheels for 2003 model year, experiencing identical problems and safety issues.the car vibrates at highway speeds and have already lost a lugnut.tire mfg. When replacing tires damaged a few lugnuts in attempting to remove them.

I have a 2002 lincoln ls.i noticed that there is a recall in place for 2003 chrome rims for lincoln ls for cracking wheels.i have the same symptoms as what is described in the 2003 recall.i have cracking in the well of the wheel on my car and around lug nuts on my vehicle.i contacted lincoln to see if i could be included in this recall.lincoln told me that i would have to submit the information to this.i would like to have this inspected because i have the same problems happening that the 2003 chrome rims have.

All four 17 inch chrome wheels are cracked at the lug nuts on my 2002 lincoln ls (strangely similar to recall notice 03v136000). Experienced vibration at highway speeds. I am in the process of replacing the wheels.

The lug nuts on my 2002 lincoln ls have swelled on the lug posts and make it almost impossible to remove. The car went into service and i was phoned and informed by the lincoln dealership that new lug nuts cost $100 for the car. Ford & lincoln know of this problem but refuse to correct the problem. Is there any recourse through your organization.

Lug nut cover strips away from lug nut. Lug wrench turns cover only. I had to pry this aluminum cover off to remove lug. Poor fit of lug nut wrench.*la

Dt*:the contact stated after having a left rear flat tire, the lugs nuts could not be removed from the wheel assembly.after initial inspection, it was determined the stainless steel jacket of all of the lug nuts on the vehicle were distorted.the vehicle is currently awaiting tow service to a dealer for further inspection.updated 05/03/06.
