My 1994 lincoln conitental has only 68,000 miles.the head gasket blew last friday.in searching the internet, ford knew of the head gasket design defect in 1988 yet continued to emplace this defective engine in their motor vehicles.as a result of their wilfull neglect, i will have to pay an estimated $1200-1800 to have the heads repaired.one website tallied 2,114 similar engine complaints by 1998.

During frontal impactthe driver's and passenger's side air bags did not deploy. Please describe details.
While pulling out another vehicle hit consumer's vehicleon the side, anddriver side air bag didn't deploy.
When driving at low speed and applying the brakes, the brakes went straight to the floorboard, causing the consumer to bump into another vehicle before stopping. The air bags didn't deploy. This was the second time the vehicle had been in the shop for the brakesto be repaired, and the dealer couldn't determine the problem.
Driver's side airbag deployed without collision, vehicle went out of control.tttwo people were injured in accident.consumer states vehicle had been previously taken to dealer for power steering problems.
On 4/12/01 i was involved in an accident while traveling on i-75n at approximately 55-60 mph in the center lane. Traffic being heavy in all lanes..another vehicle going north in the right hand lane at a slower speed pulled over into my lane without warning. I was unable to avoid collision with this vehecle.as a result of the impact my driverside airbag partially deployed from the steering wheel but didn't fully inflate.on impact to the left rear and side panel of the other vehicle involved. As a result of this failure even though i was wearing a seat belt i was thrown forwaed onto the steering wheel. I feel that because this airbag didn't inflate although it was triggered by the sensers to deploy, caused me to receive my injuries.have reported this to the ford moter consumer division to which their reply was i would have to get my insurance company to litigate any complaint for damages. After talking with them, and after the state highway patrol formally recorded everything! including taking photograph of the collision and also the failed airbag! i find myself possibly losing the sight of an eye as a result of truama to the head that should have been avoided if this airbag had fully deployed. Interestingly enough is the fact that the passenger airbag fully deployed and inflated all the way to the back of the passenger front seat. Please advise me of my rights to any liability regarding the failure of this airbag . What recourse can i take and who can you advise i contact at ford moter lincoln division? i spoke to a good friend who gave me an address for ford motor company litigation presentation p.o. Box 43358 detroit, mich 48243 . I am unable to get any cooperation from ford consumer as to how this department can be contacted by phone or email. I am very concerned that this problem of the failed airbag might cause me to lose the sight of my right eye. I am even more concerned for other consumer's who might not be as lucky as i am. Please advise !

This vehicle has had two engines, two transmissions, two sets of motor mounts, been in numerous times for repairs to the window on the driver side.the head gaskets blew causing engine failure without warning.we spent over $20,000.00 in 1999 for repairs.we paid for a radiator that was not defective at all, (just found this out last week), a water pump and a valve body after a transmission replacement.the 1994 lincoln continental was a "real lemon" and more should be done to protect consumers against having to pay for these vehicels and then having to pay to rebuild them.
Ignition module failed.
A piston cracked withintransmission, cause unknown.computer failed while repairing transmission.also, the head gasket blew up at 50000 miles.
Air sensor, idle sensor and engine computer replaced. Mjs

Purchased car at used car sale through company credit union in april of 1999.the car had just over 50,000 miles.called lincoln continental and they had no service record on the car.tracked down former owner and he advised that he had no major problems.two weeks after purchase had a circuit replaced.the blown circuit effected the speedometer and cause the engine to rev up and down depending on what the broken speedometer reflected. In august the alternator failed and had replaced by lincoln service center.driving home from service center the rear suspension failed.the service center refused to repair saying that the hydraulic suspension was problematic for this model.three weeks later the headgaskets blew after a less than 15 mile drive (to church).
Intermittentlyheadlights will short out, resulting in poor visibility. Dealer has been notified.also, antilock brakes lockup periodically.
Received recall notice (98v009000). Called dealer. Informed no parts available at this time. Would call owner when parts for headlights circuit breaker become available. As of yet, have not heard anything.
Cluster failed causing the oil warning light to flash intermitently.nlm

The contact owns a 1994 lincoln continental. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the oil pressure gauge suddenly decreased and a chime sounded inside the vehicle. The failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and they were unable to locate the issue. The vin was unavailable. The manufacturer had not been notified. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
Vehicle takes awhile to heat, coolent okay, no external leaks, removed plugs and found signs of coolent in #4 cyl. Replaced head gaskets and sent heads out to machine shop. Appears to be okay now.on 06/01/99 at call back for leaking head gasket they found it leaking and replaced gaskets at no charge, them on 08/11/99 they found my engine banging and said gaskets leaked and damaged lower bearings and they replaced the engine at no charge. On 04/02/02 the gaskets leaked agoain and i had to pay for the replacement.
Car currently has a cover on it and doesn't runbecause of a bad transmission.
In april 2000 at poulson, nj engine developed a noise like tappets or lifter claning. We had the car drove to page, az (100 miles) to the ford lincoln dealership, their inspection of the engine confirmed the rod was loose. The engine was runined, no engine were available to replace our engine. The reasongive was because of the "head gasket failures".

Continuation of previous complaint. Response from letter to pres. Of ford on 3.8l v6 engine head gasket failure on lincoln continental with 54,436 miles on it:ford basically said "tough luck".dealer saying $1,700 to $3,000 plus to fix.my independent mechanic informs me there is another alternative.there are several product available to fix the head gasket in the car.one he has used, and works, is "steel seal".cost about $70 for product, plus a new thermostat, and new coolant.i figure worst case around $400 for everything.it's worth the gamble. As it is now the car is junk or the repair from ford is more that the value of the car.
It is proof that the 3.8l engine has a manufactures defect to head gaskets at the time the head gasket let go the oncoming traffic visability was zero the outcome could be loss of life if car crashed into a pole the steam that came out of the exahust was so great.also car can stall and loss of control is also a factor. It is a known defect and recall of there product whould be in the best intrest of safty

Left wheel seal to the transmission has a leakage.also, engine head gasket blew out which caused oil to leak onto the engine, andradiator to leak anti-freeze. In addition, driver's side left window fell down inside the doorthis was the fourth time that cinsumer took vehicle to shop for repairs.
Review of your hotline indicates there have been other head gasket problems of which i had not been made aware.there was no warning. There was no overheating. Cost of repair $5300.00

Engine blew out while consumer was driving. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated that t rod could have come through the engine.ak
I just recently found out that my engine may be covered under some recall by ford. I have paid to have my head gaskets replaced on my car twice and cannot understand why ford is dragging their feet given all the data they are aware of. I hope my data will solidify some type of action against ford. I've laid out over $4,000 to have my car repaired because i like the car and now i find out that ford knew about the problem. If there is any further data about this condition, please contact me.
Engine head gaskets failed causing engine to stop running.failure was immediate in nature and gave no prior warning of existing problem.we have learned through research ford is aware of this problem on the 3.8l engines.
I purchased this car in march 2002, but by mid-july, it was no longer operable.my college-age son was driving it home from work when it overheated & he had to pull to the side of the road in rush hour traffic.after it cooled off, he added water & drove to a safer place where he added more water & coolant, then tried to get home.the car stalled on the service road/ramp to the tollway & had to be pushed asside with the help of a policeman.i have since become aware that there is a major manufacturer defect in this car regarding a faulty head gasket.ford has extended the warranty to 100,000 miles/7 years, but won't cover my car since it's now older than 7 years.mr

This car was brought in for a (b) recall (00m09)on july of 2000 with approx. 50000 mi. On it for a potential head gasket failure. Mr. Macdonald was told that there was no need for servicing at that time. Approx. 3000 mi. Later, the car developed over-heating and hard starting. It was then taken to an independent mechanic who said that the head gasket had failed.i feel the dealer/mfr. Failed in their responsibilities to correct the situation when they could have on july 2000,thus leading to engine failure.
The engine overheats because of that the car has to be cut off. Vehicle has been to dealer before for the same problem.2 head gaskets were replaced, the problem still exists.

We purchased car as a company program and found things wrong at that time which indicated car had been in some sort of accident which we were not informed of till we discovered things later, such as inside of back rim bent, pieces of glass inside back pakage tray, rubber bumper missing on 2 left doors, and air bag warning wires unhooked inside steering wheel. At 35000 miles the head gasket blew on motor(covered by warranty) then right after warranty ran out at 50000 miles we had 2 mass air sensors fail, then the idle control and at 56000 miles found low knock in engine and when opened found many worn and bad parts in engine to the point we had to put new engine in car at our own expense. Dealers or ford motor co. Would not pay any. Car had always been serviced at 2000 miles since we've had it and didn't use any oil. We believe this failure uncalled for at this mileage with this high priced of a car. The local dealer ship had 4 cars in their shop at the same time with this 3.8 v6 engine being replaced. Also found a ford van in the community at a diferant dealer with same motor out at just under 50000 mile. Seems to me with the care we gave car and the damage found to the crankshaft. Pistons and camshaft of our engine, these engines must be faulty from start.
This condition has been a on going problem with this car and engine ford has issued a notice to owners that they will fix all cars that fail within six years or75000 miles this car is over the six year proid by three month and ford will not help in the repairs which i was quoted a price$1200.00 for repair the engine i bet this condoction has cost thousand on lincoln owners a lot of money ,it a shame that the comsumer has to pay for fords mistake of using falty head gaskets.

Head gaskets blown, towed to local repair facility and told needs new engine would not just replace headgasker, called dulaney motors and they said only headgasket needs repair so i authorized. In may 2000 temperature/oil gauge would become very erratic and engine warning buzzer would sound. Returned car to dulaney which they kept for almost a week and reported nothing wrong, took car to fox linc/merc dealerand they diagnosed excessive engine bearing wear and engine must be replaced. Am without a car waiting for dulaney to assess the engine problem.they have stated they will not repair the engine unless i pay for it. So beware, verify the engine does not need replacing when the headgasket blows.

This failure detected similar work in this area, prior to my ownership. Is this a lemon resold after head gasket/total engine failure as a ford program car? the mileage of bearing replacement is very, very low. We purchased this car with 31k so previous problems were hidden from us.
Left and right motor mounts broke.
Engine gasket blew. Ford says it's not their problem, mbp insurance says it's not their problem. Lincoln dealer says they won't look at it until we agree to pay for them to tear the engine down. Minimum of $700.00.

Listed as a notification to owners, not a recall. Duh!! my family is suffering due to a ford error. Can not honor a safety or general (related) recall for the life of the vehice and the safety of the motoring public they should be required to recall the vehicles from the highway and dismantle them for the non recallable parts.this vehicle and others like it are being operated in areas of heavy fog conditions.emmissions from crankcase head gaskets blowing along with heavy fog condtions can and will continue to cause traffic accidents and fatalities.my vehicle is operated in mobile/baldwin counties heavy fog along the i-10 bayway (mobile/baldwin co.) has already had several traffic fatalities that are fog and emmission conditions .as alabama has no emission controls in place the nhtsa should insist on this mfg honoring the safety and general recalls to protect the motoring public.dt

Started off with lights going off intermittently, now go off and stay off, in order to have headlights, i have to "hold" the high beam lights on, i have submitted this complaint several times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!please help.
Headlights will all the sudden go off, then come back on, does this continuously and intermittently. They have been doing this ever since we have owned the car. I have almost been hit by other motorist and have had motorist flash their lights. Also, i have nearly run off the road when i was driving down a dark road. I contacted nhsta by telephone on monday 4/30/2001.

Consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanicdeterminedthat a headlight switch needed to be replaced.
Strong, raw gas odor inside and outside of car when gas tank is near empty (5 gallons or less).odor does not occur everytime gas tank is close to empty, and never occurs when tank is full.have taken the car into dealership twice, they can smell the gas agree there is a problem, but they cannot locate the problem.doesn't seem to matter if the car is heated from driving or a cold engine, odor will occur.
Stong gas odor inside of car when gas tank is near empty.odor does not occur everytime gas tank in close to empty, and never occurs when tank is full.have taken car into dealership twice, and they can smell the gas, but had trouble locating the problem.they found something in their technical service bulletin from 1997 that had to do with a vapor vent hose that runs under the back seat of vehicle and when reaches temps of 90 degrees or more, fuel fumes were coming into vehicle when the max a/c is on. This is very similar to my problem.the kit unfortunately is no longer manufactured and they could not locate one, but are going to try to create their own kit.

Sudden failure of transmission. Came to a stop (20 miles into a 250 mile trip) and the car would not move in any forward gear unless i first put it in reverse. This happened at every stop. I was afraid to stop at the toll booths on the illinois tollway so used the i-pass lane. I managed to get to my daughter`s house in bolingbrook, where the transmission was replaced.
A piston cracked withintransmission, cause unknown.computer failed while repairing transmission.also, the head gasket blew up at 50000 miles.
Without previous symptoms or warning signs, on a fully maintained vehichle, the factory transmission requires a complete rebuild.i discovered that of the 152 tsb's issued for this vehicle model/year, 51 are regarding problems with this transmission. The following items must be replaced: torque converter, plantetary gear system, lubricating pump, 4 solenoid valves, forward clutch piston, bands, seals, external speed sensor, gaskets, misc. Parts as required.only the transimission housing is salvagable.the mechanic informed us that it "looks like a bomb went off" inside the transmission.there are obvious design flaws in this product.1993 was apparantly the first year this release of this transmission was used and subsequent years were supposed the have repaired the design errors inherent in the system.my car was supposed to have a steel forward clutch piston to correct a previous models problems, but it has, in fact, an aluminum piston.my research has found a trend of similar problems with this transmission in lincolns as well as other ford products that this unit is placed in.specifically, this is the axod-e transmission.my husband was driving the vehicle, in rush hour traffic, and only the grace of god allowed him to cross several lanes of traffic, and get to the emergency shoulder when he lost all use of the transmission, without previous warning or symptoms of problems.as there have been 4 safety recalls and 3 general recalls on this vehicle year/make/model, it is obvious that there are basis design flaws in the vehicle.

Previosuly reported "nhtsa vehicle owner's questionaire reference number 806372 dated 12/16/1996. On two separate occasions at approx, 20,00 miles (10/28/96) and approx. 55,000 miles(10/9/98) the brakes on the subject vehicle(1994 lincoln contintial) have failed. In both instances the failure occured at low speed after having sat for a short peeriod of time with the are idling and the foot brake depressed, than released with the car slowly moving forward(approx. 1 to 2 mph). Upon depressing the foot brake to stop the pedal depressed all the way to floorboard with no braking available resulting in minor accidents to nearby vehicles. In all instances there has been no brake fluid loss nor have any brake warning lights been on. After the first incident(10/28/96) and three months of investigation ford motor companyreplaced the master cylinder and valve block. The braking system worked fine until the most recent incident(10/9/98). In both instances the brakes(braking action) had restored itself by the time mechanics at newman lincoln-mercury started an investigatiion of the problem(usually early the next morning...note that in both instances the brake loss occurred in the early evening after the garage was closed). To date(12/31/98) ford motor company and dealer have determined that they can find no problem and have asked that i return the vehicle to service without and root cause determined nor any corrective action taken. At this point i'm resisting returning the car to service until the root cause has been established. The car current is covered under a frod motor company extended service plan(extracare) until 86,000 miles or 3/29/2001. Currentlythe state of connecticut's department of motor vehicles dealers and repairers division is investigating why ford motor company and/or newman lincoln-mercury have not performed repairs to correct the brake failure problem. To date the car is still at dealer and no repairs have been made.
When applying the brakes the pedal travel to the floor, causing extended stopping distance which resulted inan accident.to allow the vehicle to be shifted from park to reverse, the brake pedal had to be pumped to the floor repeatedly and midway through the brake's travel to the floor there was a noticable point of resistance with an associated noise as it passed this position, a service rep from a dealer inspected vehicle and found no problems with the brakes or the braking system.
Put vehicle in reverse to back into garage vehicle moved forward.tried to put in park still moved forward, then hit brakes no brakes.hit vehicle, tried steering left to keep from hitting car. Finally hit emergency brake vehicle came to a stop.
Brake failure.
When driving at low speed and applying the brakes, the brakes went straight to the floorboard, causing the consumer to bump into another vehicle before stopping. The air bags didn't deploy. Front suspension went out while car was parked, i have seen well over 25 customers whom haave contacted ntsa with the same part failure.i called ford customer service to see wht they had not recalled this particular item on the car and was given no answer. But told to go to an authorized dealarship and haave it repaaired, keep my receipts and if they decide (probable after hundreds more complain) to recall the suspension somewhere in the future i will receive a letter and if i have my receipts and it was repaired by one of their authorized agents, then at that time i might get a refund.i explained to customer sservice that i felt that there was plenty eenough evidence lodged on this website supporting the fact that many cutomers have had the same problem and i feel that this should have been recalled long time ago.when i purchased the car in april 2001, i was told the only recall they had was on the head gaskets. But there is a sservice bulletin out regaring noises made upon start up and shut down which are directly related to the front air suspension.i feel lincoln ford should be responsible for this repair in their obvious neglect to recall this faulty suspension system and notify consumers of all of this year of lincoln problems.
