I purchasedused 1999 lexus rx300 in 2008 and so far i've had to replace the transmission due to unexpected catastrophic failure, both air ratio sensors, both knock sensors, oxygen sensor, front strut mounts, and now possibly have to change the transmission again (not shifting correctly). I was not aware that the 1999 to 2001 rx300s were so problematic. Since this is my only vehicle and i am still making payments on it, i am stuck footing the bill for all these repairs. Which from what i have researched are attributed to bad engineering. I am constantly having to repair a vehicle which is supposedly known for quality. The problems that i've mentioned are just the major repairs. I have other minor issues such as rear power window must remain locked or it opens on it's own, dashboard lights do not illuminate, andpower roof gets stuck open intermittently.
On january 17th, 2016, i took my '99 lexus rx300 to church, parked the car, and joined the sunday service. An hour after parking the vehicle (during which time it was not running or in use), i was told that there was smoke coming from it and went outside. Within minutes, the front end was bursting in flames. The fire destroyed the entire front portion of the car, including the engine, transmission, tires, and dashboard. I don't know what could have been the cause; it was seemingly random.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start without the diagnostic code reader. If the diagnostic code reader was removed from the vehicle, the vehicle would shut off. The check engine light was illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who stated that several different failure codes appeared for the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired several times for several codes; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware, but was not familiar with the failure and did not offer a repair. The approximate failure mileage was 230,000.
I own a 1999 lexus rx-300.the keys are defective, resulting in a dangerous condition.lexus's dealers and its "roadside assistance" personnel have told me that the keys were originally made with metal that is too brittle. As a result, the keys grind down, and eventually the keys can come out while the car is on, or can come out before the lock is disengaged, making it impossible to start the car.lexus has issued internal technical bulletins, but has never advised its customer of this problem, which results in a $900 repair problem after about 4 years of use.keys should last more than 4 years, or lexus should be forced to advertise that fact to its customres.
Vehicle overheated while driving, consumer pulled to side of road and walked to get help.upon returningvehicle was burning. Vehicle totalled.
Engine caught fire while driving to work.dealership notified.no response.
Was traveling 10mph when vehicle lost power. Noticed a glow underhood. Stopped vehicle & jumped out. Vehicle caught on fire immediately afterwards. Fire department arrived & put flames out. Gave no indication of cause of fire. Had vehicle towed to lexus dealership. Everything under the hood was consumed by fire & melted.
Vehicle caught fire as it was being driven. Engine compartment was destroyed and the car was totaled.
My check engine light came on. I had the oil changed for the second time within 30 days because i thought it was an oil problem. The light went off as i was leaving the place. A couple days later the light would come on when i made turns, blink, then go back off. A few days later, it came back on steady, and the car started to jerk while i was driving on the interstate. It would jerk, then slowly increase speed. Last saturday, i applied brakes, and the car rolled another few feet. Had to swerve left to keep from rear ending a vehicle. Today, upon slowing down to enter my driveway, it did it again, and i nearly hit a brick column at the beginning of the driveway. It doesn't jerk frequently, but it seems to do it more often when i am on cruise control. I love my suv and am always bragging about what a reliable car it is. I can't afford to replace it, retired and on disability.

The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300. While driving approximately 30 mph, the rpms suddenly increased and the vehicle accelerated to speeds above 85 mph. During the incident, flames were seen coming from the exhaust. The contact sustained a neck injury, which required medical attention. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who indicated that the flames created a hole in the catalytic converter and the oxygen sensor was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer (o'brien lexus in bellevue wa) were notified. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 179,825.

Had my 60,000 mile service done on my 1999 rx300. The wife drove it when i got home and told me the car was running sluggish, didn't accelerate like it did before i brought it in. I took the car out to drive it and feel what she was telling me and noticed that when i would let off the gas and coast them give it gas there was a clunking noise. I took it to the dealer, the mechanic heard the noise and said he wasn't sure what it was. The service person said that i should just drive it normal and not try to make it clunk and it should be ok. If it kept doing it to make an appointment to bring it back. Car will be out of warranty!in 4 months. *la
I have experienced several problems with my 1999 lexus rx300.i have notice via the internet that these are wide spread problems but no recalls have been occurring.these are the incidences that i have problems with:* debris can get into the idle air control valve that allows air into the engine causing the engine to have a low idle speed, or stall when it is cold. (this occurred in the past, perhaps 2004.lexus eventually replaced my engine in 2005.)* sludge can build up in the engine.i routinely have to have the sludge cleaned out to avoid engine problems.* the 'check engine' light comes on because the mass air flow sensor sends incorrect information to the engine's computer. This can cause a loss of power on acceleration.(this started occurring on december 11, 2008.)* the 'check engine' light comes on because a component of the oxygen sensor stops working, and the car is unable to determine the proper ratio of air to fuel for the engine. (this has occurred in the past, perhaps 2005.we had to pay for new air flow sensors.) * light bulbs frequently burn out in the taillights.* the front suspension makes very loud noises when going over bumps or rough roads. The support bushing for the suspension needs to be replaced.(this began happening in december 2007.lexus told us we need new struts.)* a throbbing wind noise from the moonroof.one cannot have the moonroof open at the same time as the windows or ones ear drums experience severe pain.(this has existed from purchase.)i believe the 1999 lexus rx 300 might very well be a good candidate for the lemon laws, yet we're not seeing problems being addressed with recalls.
Our vehicle's oil consumption began to increase at approximately 90k miles. It would take at least a quart of oil every 700 miles or so. The check engine light also illuminated around 100k miles. Finally brought it to our lexus dealership and told that we needed a new engine block and top end overhaul. The reason given was "oil sludge" due to lack of proper service. The service dept quoted us 8,000 dollars to do the repairs. Unfortunately we did not have the money so we are going to try and find a new engine on our own.
I have read as many of the owners of 1999 lexus rx300 suv , i am not surprised to know that i am now a proud owner of a brand new transmission that failed on my wife while returning from greenville to columbia sc. The transmission was indicating problems by shifting slow as many other complaints that have been filed . When these transmissions start to fail you experience slow shifting when the car has been sitting , even if you let the car warm up first before moving into any gear drive or reverse. When you try to back up in reverse the transmission will not shift into gear, then jumps into gear hard. I have been in the mechanical field for 35 years working for bridgestone/firestone ias a managing partner of retail locations and know thisis the signs of transmission problems. This vehicle has been serviced only by lexus only. Also are severe oil sludging problems, have serviced hundreds of these models and every horror story is the same . Oil sludging causes severe engine damage restricting oil flow through out the engine. When is our rights asconsumers going to be upheld by our government . I don`t think i want to buy other new transmission from toyota corporationor another toyota product . The cost to repair was $4075.00 and the only transmissions available are thru toyota with apparently with the new design . These problems were corrected in 2002 with the new design, what about us the owners of the defective ones!!!!chapin s.c.
I change motor oil every 5,000 miles, as per manufacturer's schedule. Also performed a 'large' ($1,400) maintenance at lexus dealer. Car ('99 rx300 awd) had rear engine seal leak at 68,000 miles. It seems a large number of the rx300s experience the same problem, due to hardening (defective) seal material abutting a hot crankcase.
When i run the air conditioning system, water seeps from under the floor board on the passenger side, sometimes up to 3/4 inch. I have to use a vacuum and or a cup to get it out. It is damaging the body. Please advise.
Contact person: kevin ezratty service manger, bob baker lexus el cajon,ca 92020(619) 440 5398 car overheats and stalls when towing a 2500 lb r/v trailer rx300 specs 3500lb. When towing in mountain terrain with ambient temperature around 100 degrees and going up hill, the car temp indicator will approach the red zone and will lose all power and stall. There is no warning or time to pull off the road, traffic mostly trucks makes it very scary and dangerous.the transmission was replaced and the car driven 1000 miles and it happened again, with no place to pull off. I returned the car to dealer, they have no idea if they are looking for a mechanical or electrical problem, ther is no history of any lexus rx300 with this type of failure. Their suggestions are don't drive in the mountains, don't drive in the desert, don't use the air conditioner, don't tow the r/v trailer, don't drive with any wind.they also requested that they be allowed to take my personal property, the r/v trailer and tow it around the mountains and desertand see if they can make it fail again.i asked if anyone in the facility had ever pulled a trailer, the answer was no one, so i declined. (i have $55,000 invested) i purchased this vehicle for the sole purpose of towing this trailer , now they tell me that just because the car is certified to tow 3500 lbs doesn't mean that it can. At this time we are at a stand still, they can't repair the car and i travel a lot and don't feel safe driving it.without the trailer it seems to be fine, it is equipped with the trailer towing package. The transmission oil temp indicator does not light up, so i think the engine is becoming hotand shutting the car down, see page 208 owners manual. Your help and suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
I want you to know during this time of toyota problems and coverup, that we leased new a 1999 lexus rx300, it was maintained at meade lexus according to plan and my wife was driving on a freeway and the engine suddenly seized and the car quit working.the car had my two infant children in it at the time and she was stuck near the exit ramp with vehicles/trucks/semis bearing down on her.she and the children were scared and nearly collided with at its sudden location to stop.the car was towed to the lexus dealer and discovered sludge had ruined the motor.they would not repair it and towed the vehicle to our garage where it sat as i made payments on it.i took lexus to arbitration with my maintenance receipts and lost as the arbitrator said i may have abused the vehicle after the toyota rep showed a sample of the sludge.the vehicle still sat in the garage and months later lexus admitted fault with the oil passages on the motor and replaced the engine just in time for me to return it off lease.i agree they finally repaired it 5-6 months later, but this failure nearly cost my families life and was ignored by lexus.the dates stated here are approx and here is an informational link i found http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/01/toyota_sludge_settlement.htmli would love to testify about the poor treatment and ignoring attitude about my problem.
My 1999 -- lexus rx300 has about 140k miles on it. The car is now parked so i don't kill myself or my family while driving. A couple months ago, my car just started jerking as if it was going to cut off and my check engine light came on. I work off a major highway and i was really scared. My car speed would be 50-55mph but the rpms would be as high as 6. I have never experienced anything like that before. I went to thecar repair shop - i had some mis-fires and they were fixed for $150, no problem. The car repair recommended i get my front brakes done because my miles per gallon had slipped to 15 in the city. A couple weeks later, i got my front brakes done, no problems until one evening, i was driving home when my check engine light came on again...this time i was at the stop light and my car started idling/jerking like i needed to give it some gas or it was going to die. My check engine light is now blinking on my dash board. My husband took my car to a transmission shop and the lexus dealership they say 2-coil ignitions have failed. And that my spark plugs need to be replaced. I also have some other transmission problems but in order to get the check engine light to stop blinking i have to fix, the coil ignition problem which cost between $515 to $775. Then they can run more test to see there is any more problems. My car is parked for now. There should be some sort of recall since this is a common problem with all '99 lexus rx300. This is crazy.
I own a 1999 lexus rx300 and have had an engine sludge problem which was repaired by the dealer with the valve seal replacement being performed. Also had front exhaust manifold and front down pipe failure(crack) occurring at about 71,000 miles. Unsure as to any relationship between the two.
While driving on a 2 lane mountain road the engine on my 1999 lexus rx 300 started knocking loudly and failed.i was able to swing into a pull out and did not get hit.this failure is due to sledge build up.i am a second owner of the vehicle and did not receive notice from toyota about replacing a defective engine . I purchased vehicle in 03 had it in for repairs in 07 the dealership failed to inform me of the lawsuit and correct the engine at that time. Now this incident in 2010.i could have lost my life if i were to have been hit on this mountain road that sits on the cliff at 5,500 feet.
Lexus 1999 rx 300 had oil sludge in 2000 and i was originally charged by lexus pembroke pines then about 1 year later reimbursed as a customer convience. My lexus now has thrown a rod at 88,000 which i feel and can get expert mechanics to verify that this is the after effect of the oil gel. The only thing that was done was a oil cleaning and gasket change. The internal parts oil pump, rods, crankshaft were not dismantled and thoroughly cleaned removing any left over remnants of oil gunk which after time would restrict oil flow to the working parts.lexus denies all liability and i feel this falls under the class action suit and i need protection which i cannot afford.your assistance and further help in pointing out cases in complete engine breakdown will help me get lexus to open there eyes and hopefully help others.
I own 1999 lexus rx300, since february of the last year, i had numerous problems with the car's engine (it has sludge), transmission, emission system, and over use of gas per mile. First problem started during the first month of my ownership and since that time the vehicle has spent weeks in auto repair shops.lexus dealer and others charged me lavish fees but never fixed the problems and lexus dealers even never admitted that serious problems existed.
Vehicle did not start four times in six week period.battery replaced twice.problem still exist.
Engine design is faulty. While drivingvehicleoil becomes very hot and turns into sludge.engine check light illuminatesondash continuously. Please provide any further information.
Engine stalls at idle, dealer claims from high oil viscosity despite oil being changed every 5000 miles. Dealer says that because of the way the engine is mounted that it runs hot and that only certain oils are reccomended. Says that quaker state oil, which we used, should be changed every 3000 miles since it is not "as good" as the oil they use at the dealer. This is not suggested in the owners manual and i would suspect poor engine design that allows development of excessive heat.secondly, the gas tank sensor failed- gas gauge ran half when the tank was empty.dealer says he has seen this "several" times.suspect problem with this component.
Engine failed due to sludge. Took to arbitration did not win. Vehicle out of service for last 10 months.lexus dealer and customer service contacted over 50 times. Even with new policy engine still has not been repaired.lexus and dealer have treated me like a villian. Piad for vehicle that is unuseable.
Engine design fault in the cooling channels to the cylinder head of the vehicle were made too small resulting in excessives engine operating temperatures causing frying of the engine oil turning it to sludge, the sludge clogs the engine ports eventually causing engine failure.nlm

Engine sludge, resulting in engine replacement.
Exhaust manifold on right side of engine cracked, which resulated in replacement of the manifold and 2 sensor at owners expense.the part cracked at71,000 miles and lexus would not reimburse repair because the car was out of warranty.exhaust manifolds should not crack at 71,000 miles, if ever.dt
Took 1999 lexus rx 300 in for regular service at 39,000 miles, and asked dealerto check engine noise.dealer found cracked exhaust manifold and split exhaust pipe coming off manifold.maifold replaced under extended warranty plan but split exhaust not covered because car was out of original warranty.dealer carried exhaust manifolds in stock due to frequency of problem.this was a design/manufacturing defect and should have been covered by manufacturer.
I have a lexus rx300 awd and just found out that the transmission needs to be replaced at 120,000 miles.i was very shocked when i took my vehicle in for scheduled maintenance and was told that the transmission is going out and it would be $5720 to repair it.i am very disgusted with this because i started researching the issue and have found that there are several problems with this "so called luxury vehicle" that is suppose to last you to 250,000 miles or more.

I own a 1999 lexus rx300 fwd.i have had multiple problems with this vehicle.when i bought it jan 2008 ignition coil 1 and 3 failed.two months later 3, , and 6 failed.both times when vehicle failed i was driving on interstate 85 vehicle would not go over 45 and would not go into overdrive!!!now the transmission is acting up.it is slipping and also decides to gear down when doing 70mph down the interstate. Was at a stop light and the light turned green and the vehicle wouldn't move, finally caught gear and jerked.was almost hit by oncoming traffic.i do not feel safe in this so called "luxury vehicle".it is still under extended warranty, and is going to lexus dealership tomm.i cant wait to hear what they say the out come is.car has been fully serviced and up to date.just came out of lexus dealership 2 weeks ago having problems!!??? now its going back.lexus needs to recall the transmissions they are faulty!!i have read several complaints and not one action from the manufacturer yet??they have already replace rear main seals, cam seals, and something else at 2000.00 dollars...ughwhen its cold, it takes the car about 12 mins to go into overdrive.i keep hearing a whining sound, and shudder sounds.i only have like 16,000 miles left on warranty.so some one please tell me what to do or where to go!!!this is such a headache!!

Gas gauge failed to register the correct fuel left in tank. Taken vehicle to dealership & the mechanic repaired the faulty gas gauge.
1999 lexus rx 300 developed a problem with the tailgate door latch.*mrthe rear hatch handle seized and it didn't operate with the remote key entry or power locks.the consumer had to manually close the hatch to prevent it from accidentally opening while driving, which did happen twice.
1999 lexus rx 300 with rear/hatch door lock problems customer states that he has notified lexus and learned from friends that similar models with identical problems have been reported**ccthe consumer stated the door failed to unlock or open either manually or by using the remote control. The consumer learned there was no mechanism to open the door manually from the inside or the outside.
This has been happening since 2013-the car goes up to 35 mphs and then loses power and then shuts off.i have to forcefully pull it over to the side.first time it was worked on replaced battery and thought it was the computer.a year later at 136,000 miles the car makes electrical noises and has difficulty accelerating and shifting above 3000 rpms.when brought it to the dealer, they said it was the transmission and solenoid.this seems to be a common complaint and needs to be investigated.
At approx 195,000 the transmission has completely failed.i recognize mileage might be high but i believe that as engine is good for 250,000 to 300,000 the transmission should also be rated that high.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300. The contact stated that the vehicle would not shift into drive or reverse. While attempting to make a turn, there was an abnormal noise coming from the hood of the vehicle. As a result, the vehicle seized. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 300,000.
The manifold system on my 1999 lexusrx300 had to be replaced at only 68,320 miles which cost well over $1,000. Usually the manifold system on a car is not replaced.lexus should be repsonsible for this problem. Please look into this problem for us. I also had the jellying problems with the engine. Yes, i do all the required only changes and etc.
My transmission went out on this car on the freeway leaving me in a very dangerous situation with my 8 month old child. This transmission was just rebuilt a year ago. You are probably aware that this issue is beyond prevalent. Stories and complaints about early transmission failure are all over the internet. You are probably already aware. So is lexus and they refuse to do anything about it. Will someone have to get killed before you demand a recall? me and my baby could have very easily have been killed yesterday.
1. On 08/17/11 around 9pm, our 1999 lexus rx300 was suddenly failed in highway of the yosemite mountain. 2. The car was towed to lexus dealer san jose, ca. The technician identified that it caused by transmission failure. We need to replace the transmission which is caused us $5000. I told the customer service person to keep the replaced part till next tuesday which is 08/23/11. We goggled on the internet and found out that this is the known issue of rx300 between 1999 through 2002 model years. The transaxle (lexus transmission) would fail after 80,000 miles of driving according to owners who reported the transmission problems. Our car is just over 80,000 miles. We don't drive that much although it is 1999 model. According to the article on the ehow website, there is no factory recall has been issued to address the transmission premature failure issue.there are many moms including myself who drive this car everyday with young kid on board. My son is 7 years old. I personal know at least 3 moms with 4 kids (5-7 years old) who drive same model year car. Please work on this case asap. At lease please release the warning to the customer to check their transmission. We hope that we are the last people who experience this tragedy incident. Thanks god we were safe. This yosemite trip we planned to go during the winter time. Thanks god we didn't make it at that time. The car failed area, our att cell even couldn't dial out 911. Thanks god there is nice person stopped his car and saved us. Thanks god the car didn't failed at mountain fire area, my son had asthma reaction to the smock. Thanks god that there was no car behind us and there is a highway turn over right ahead of us. Thank god we are safe although we were scared to death and couldn't sleep well at night.
Transmission will not downshift.
I have a 1999 lexus rx300...transmission failed at 150k milesno warning just stranded me while out running errands.the cost to fix this was 3k and no car door over a week.this car also had an engine that lexus replaced due to oil sludging.really wanted to kept he car until 200k but now the check engine light is on.
On or about 12/5/09 my daughter was driving home from work on 55 when all of a sudden she said the car seemed to lose traction and she said before she knew it she was inches away from going into a ditch and just missed hitting another car, thank god the traffic behind her did not crash into her. A guy she missed hitting got out of his car and asked if she was ok and that she almost hit him. We contacted lexus that morning and was told to bring the car in so we had it towed and was given a loaner for about a week and was finally told what was wrong, the front differential was locking up &fluid inside was completely black from metal shavings to the tune of $5000.00 we at that time asked if there was any recalls on the car because everybody we talked to said the car should not have done that, was told by the service guy there were no recalls,we went looking on the internet about differentials and happened upon lexus website and there we found recall on my car 1999 rx300 recall #72421 describing exactly what happened to us.contacted lexus was told it was not my car,not my vin #,different manufacturer. After numerous calls to try and resolve this getting the runaround was told by the service manager he would be willing to do the labor for free and but did not feel like he should assume all responsibility and to call corporate was told by them that there was no recall that it was a "technical bulletin".and finally they would allow 25% off of parts and that was a final offer, also i received a $500.00 gift card toward parts, there is a recall # .i took very good care of my car, spent $2000.00 in 11/08 for work on the car.besides the fact no one was hurt lexus is giving me the runaround they flatly said no recalls even though their website has recall with recall #. I think they are taking advantage because we are women andsupposedly was not going to pursue this. If the service guy said to contact corporate which we did as well as the bbb,and mr. Fix it from the sometimes.
I was driving down the street doing about 40 or soand all four wheelslocked up at once suddenly. Itcausing the car to a come pleat stop in the road. The car behind me had to lock up all most causing a accident.
On 06/16/16 i pulled into driveway engage emergency brakes place vehicle in park and got off. Immediately i realized vehicle was rolling forward i attempted to start to brake and got nothing. I noticed that vehicle was in reverse i attempted to place in park and got nothing lever was free sliding not engaging any gears. I immediately got online to attempt to troubleshoot issue and ran into a handful of blogs relating to an issue in gear shifter cable with a plastic retaining clip which lexus uses on cable. I had no indication or any sort of warning of this issue before it occurred it just happen out of the blue and it could have been worse if i was actually on the road when this happened. I have read that lexus is not standing behind this mistake and feel that it is horrible to allow a company that sells such expensive vehicles to employ this practice and endanger consumers, specifically for such an inexpensive piece. I had to get under vehicle to manually engage trasmission into neutral to be able to start vehicle and properly park by again getting under vehicle and placing in reverse and the drive, i was unable to get back into park for some reason will lift vehicle in the morning and attempt to see why will also be attempting to repair and will then have more of an idea of the issue and pictures relating to this matter
On april 25, 2012, my wife and i were driving to my brothers home, a distance of 50 miles. About two miles from our destination, we stopped at an intersection. When the light turned green, i accelerated and the car went forward about ten feet and lurched to a stop in the middle of the intersection.we were thrown forward, and the driver behind us had to jam his brakes. We were able to leave the intersection only by putting the car in low gear and slowly moving through the traffic to the far right lane and into a bank parking lot.we had the car towed to a nearby mechanic. The following day i received a call from the mechanic who quoted $3,766 for transmission replacement.i authorized the work to be done. On april 27, i told a friend who was visiting our area from canada of the incident. That day, he spoke with an acquaintance who is a service representative for a canadian lexus dealer.he said thatfailure at around 100,000 miles is a well known problem with the 1999 lexus rx300 and that lexus had been working with customers on this issue .i went to the internet to see what i could learn.there was no recall, but there were sites referencing the pervasiveness of transmission failure in the rx300.from what we have learned , we believe that transmission failure on the 1999 lexus rx300 occurs frequently at around 100,000 miles and is caused by a design flaw in that model year. That being the case, it seems to us that lexus ought to have taken preemptive action so that owners such as my wife and i would not have to suffer a near collision, not to mention unnecessary costs and inconvenience.lexus offered a token service credit but was unwilling to admit to any inherent problem in the rx300 transmissions and offered no comment regarding our suggestion that the owners should be forewarned of the possibility of transmission failure at around 100,000 miles.
1999 lexus rx300 which had transmission service on march 17th 2011 at , began to make a whirring sound and slip out of gear while driving on interstate 85 north on saturday july 9th 2011. I immediatly pulled off onto the shoulder of the interstate to check the fluid and it showed full on the dip stick. On monday july 11th 2011 the rx300 in question was taken to the same dealership which performed the service of the transmission on march 17th 2011, and they informed me that i would need a new transmission costing upward of $4500. After further investigation i have foundthere are thousands of complaints regarding the rx300 model years 1999-2001 describing the exact same drive train failure. It is apparent that lexus is aware of this issue and has failed to issue any type of warning to its consumers of impending transaxle failure due to an inferior shifting apparatus. As stated earlier service was performed on my rx300 and any mention of impending problems were absent. As a consumer i feel that it is the responsibility of lexus to warn its customers of any problems which may arise due to inadequate equipment. Below are links to other websites which list complaints of the exact transaxle failure.a recall for repairs should be issued as this is a serious vehicle failure. If i had been informed of this impending issue costly repairs and damage certainly would have been avoided.us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28020 -http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/webx/.f111d9c/1.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
This car is a severe safety hazard.headlights dim to daytime running lights at night, transmission lurches between 2nd and 3rd gear and seat belt malfunctions.
My car has a shudder from 2 to 3 shift of the transmission. I called the dealer and they told me it was a service campaign about this issue, but being my car is out of warranty i would have to pay for parts and labor to fix this issue.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300.at approximately 55 mph with clear road conditions, the transmission unexpectedly shifted gears.the vehicle began to jerk followed by a loss in power.the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The failure was diagnosed as internal transmission failure and has not been repaired.the current and failure vehicle mileage were 103000.
Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 75 mph, the vehicle began to coast to a stop without warning.the vehicle was pulled over, allowed to cool down, then proceeded 100 miles.this cycle recurred until arriving at the contact's residence.the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop which determined the planet pinion gear failed.the vehicle was being towed to the dealership to have to transmission replaced.
Simply drivingthe transmission started to slip, very quickly (20-30 miles) the transmission was slipping so badly the car had to be put into 2nd gear to get it to the auto repair shop.the car will not drive in drive and can only move forward in the lower automatic gears.
I have a 99 rx 300 lexus with 75,000 miles. The transmission just died today.i did all that lexus recommended with fluids replacement(each 10k miles which is outrageous) and with all that the transmission diedi hope that you can do something about it.
1999 rx300 first heard knocking from the hood and cut off, next day the car would not go forward or backward.
We owned a 1999 lexus rx 300 suv.we recently encountered a complete transmission failure on 11/26/2009 (thanksgiving day) at ~134000 miles while driving to attend a thanksgiving dinner.the car was well-maintained and well-kept since the purchase.the entire maintenance history can be verified & confirmed by lexus of portland in oregon.we were very surprised that the transmission went out so soon for a lexus.this is very disappointing.not only the situation was dangerous and unsafe for my wife & i (we were on a highway) but we later found out that lexus is charging us $4400 to replace a rebuilt transmission.as i investigate further, sounds like lexus/toyota is well-aware of the problem and not offering any compensation to help with the heavy burden replacement cost.we would like to file this complaint as a way to get higher authority to help the affected lexus owner.hopefully you can review & investigate into the matter with lexus/toyota for us.
I had some diagnostics run on the transmission, and the verdict was that the planetary gear would likely need to be replaced if the transmission was rebuilt. Apparently the original planetary gear had four gears mounted in an aluminum carrier... Who knows, heat, wear whatever the carrier fails and allows the gears to tilt, and then your tranny is toast.. The new replacement planetary gears are mounted in a steel carrier, with 6 gears instead of the original 4....very interesting.... And much stronger i spoke with the service manager at my local lexus dealer (who himself had an rx300 and had to replace the transmission, ironically), and he went to lexus corporate and got them to pay for half of the replacement cost. This brought the estimated cost to about $2200 including tax. The estimated costs on the overhaul were between $1500-$2000. The lexus service manager had said that when his own transmission went out, he'd grilled the lexus engineers on the remanufactured part. He said that the engineers admitted that there were some "improvements" made in that transmission post-2001 and that they'd rather have a remanufactured 2001+ tranny than a brand new 2000 transmission. They never admitted to an issue, only that the 2001+ part was definitely better. I consider myself to be pretty darn good at knowing when someone isn't telling the full truth, and this guy was, so i believe him.
I own two 1999 lexus rx300's.one with 100,000 miles and one with 76,000 miles.within the last two months, the transmission has failed in both cars.
There is a shudder of the transmission when shifting from first to second gear at approximately 2000 rpm's.the vehicle is equipped with all-wheel drive.ibought it with 65,570 mi.the dealer replaced drive shaft to rear wheels and front axle(s).the problem remains and is a nuisance regardless of vehicle temperature.
Own a 1999 lexus rx 300.engine transmission has been sluggish since i purchased the car in 2001.since we have owned the car we complained the dealer that when you start to run the car in the morning it will take a few minutes before the car will shift from 2nd to 3rd gear.the dealer kept telling us that was normal for the model car.the transmission got continually more sluggish over the years meaning that there was hesitation or jerky ness when you would pull your foot off of the gas.last week i started to hear a grinding noise when the car was shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.i just got back from the repair shop where i was told that the transmission which just turned 130,000 miles was shot and that the only fix was to purchase a rebuilt one from lexus at a cost of $4,500 to $5,000.they told me they were aware that this was a common problem with 1999- 2001 rx 300 transmissions but that there was never a recall or service bulletin issued.if this is a common problem then i think someone should do something about it.
No events leading to transmission failureneeds replacing.
My transmission broke down on me and had to be replaced on my 1999 lexus rx 300, with less than 124,000 miles.there was no indication that the transmission was going bad.
Transmission failure with 1999 rx300. My transmission is shot.we only have 85,000 miles on the car.the dealership is telling me that we should have changed the transmission oil more frequently.however, we were never approached with this recommendation during service visits. The vehicle has always been a little sluggish.we bought the vehicle in ca and two years ago moved to nc. During one of our first service visits, we asked them about the performance.the service staff at the time told us it was inherent to the design.even worst, we bought the pre-own vehicle in ca.we were told that it was throughly inspected.they even presented a inspection certification certificate.we i presented this certificate to the dealer in nc, they are telling me that it does not match the vin for my vehicle.also, they can not track any information of this inspection in their internal network. Now i have a castistrophic failure on a vehicle that i bought for $30,000 with only 85,000 miles!?!? please help with any recommendations.thanks.
About one week ago, i noticed a tinny/humming noise coming from somewhere under the hood of my rx300. I took it to several mechanics to have them tell me what was wrong with it, but by the time i got there the engine was operating at normal temperatures and the noise was practically non-existent. Yesterday morning, while traveling at highway speeds, it would suddenly lose power and the tachometer would show the rpms raising suddenly, as if it was in neutral. It would do this for several seconds or more before deciding to apply power to the wheels again when it wanted to. This has caused me to have to creep along at times, unsure of what it might do next. Not being in control of when (or where for that matter) my vehicle will go is a safety concern. Will it poop out on me when i'm needing to pass somebody or trying to turn left across oncoming traffic? will it lunge me forward on its own at an unpredictable moment? yesterday afternoon my "check engine" light came on, my mechanic told me the code rang up as "shift solenoid." this car has always been taken care of according to manual specs. My last tranny fluid change was about three months ago. The car also appears to have a rear engine leak at the gasket between the engine and tranny. This "quality" lexus car has less than 114k miles on it! my sister just had her rear engine seal replaced and her transmission rebuilt for $4400 and hers has just 125k miles on it. What a joke! i will never by a toyota again. I've always gotten better safety and longevity out of fords. Poo on you lexus.i am scheduling a time to have my mechanic repair this; still waiting on a quote though. I expect a min of $400, but once he opens the tranny up he may advise me to rebuild the thing (another $4-$5k). Lexus either believes in safety, in which case they should fess up to poor engineering and fix their mistake, or they don't!deaths/injuries:? = not yet.
Transmission on my 1999 lexus rx300 started slipping. We took it into a lexus dealer and were told to not do anything until the transmission failed, then bring it in. I asked if we should have it serviced or some maintenance to prevent a failure and they advised that it was not worth it. It failed, then the dealer wants $4,200 to fix it. Research shows that this year and model lexus has transmission problems nationwide and suggests it is a widespread problem. This is a safety issue as well as general mechanical failure.
I was driving on the highway when the transmission failed suddenly leaving me stranded.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx-300.the contact stated that he heard a crackling noise when he applied the brake then the vehicle stalled.the contact stated that ten minutes later he was able to restart.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the transmission caused the failure.as of january 7, 2008, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle.the failure mileage was 89,000 and current mileage was 89,000. Updated 02-14-08.the consumer stated the vehicle would frequently loose power.
I was just driving along and as i began to accelerate the rpms went real high and the speed would not increase.after stopping and starting again it began jerkingand would not change gears.it turned out that my transmission had failed.i bought a 2000 reconditioned one to save money. Now i'm having problems with it!
I had a 1999 lexus rx300. It had transmission sensor replaced at ~86k miles. And recently, at 140k miles, the transmission totally broke down. From reading http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_54694_4.html, there are so many 1999 rx300 owners had the same transmission problem.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300.while driving 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly began to decelerate.the contact attempted to depress the accelerator pedal, but the vehicle felt as if it was in neutral.the vehicle failed to accelerate and began hearing a grinding sound.the vehicle came to a complete stop and was towed to a mechanic.the mechanic was told that the transmission was no good.the current and failure mileages were 105,000.
The automatic transmission on my 1999 lexus rx300 failed at 165,000 miles.it constantly tried to downshift, and as a result it ran hot and burned transmission fluid.prior to failing, it ceased shifting into overdrive while i was on the highway, forcing me to drive in a low gear at 4,500 rpms and waste gas while i drove as far as i could toward the mechanic.
When starting my 1999 lexus rx 300 after work, i noticed a "whining" sound coming from the engine.my commute home is about 15 miles.i noticed when driving that it would "jerk" when trying to change gears.it made me think back to a couple of months back when i was in a parking space and put the car into reverse and started to ease out of the parking space when it felt like someone has hit me or i had hit something.i got out, but nothing?i then got back into the car and started to leave and the car would go into reverse, but when applying the gas the car would not move.i tried again and the car finally "caught" into gear and made a terrible sound.i noticed in the weeks leading up to the day of failure that the car would have a hard time changing into second gear.it would "wind out" before catching.now, the day of the failure, i was leaving work and i noticed a "whining" sound in the engine and in my commute home it got worse.the car started jumping back and forth and the rpms were randomly jumping. Even while coasting down a hill the rmps would jump and accelerate and slow down the car making it jerk. At times it would act as if it was in neutral and i was traveling at 45 miles per hour.when this would happen, the rmps wouldn't move?my car has approximately 78k miles on it.i immediately told my husband, we called lexus and took it straight to them.i had to get a rental car.i got a call the next day to tell me that the pump failed and the transmission fluid was black and the transmission was gone.it's going to cost $4,600.00 to repair.there are many other cases exactly like mine.this should be a recall!
My 1999 lexus rx 300 transmission failed caused by a faulty design in the front planetary assembly. I have followed up online and there are 1000's of postings of the exact same thing happening to this model. The cost is $5000 to repair. With such a high failure rate (based upon the information i have gathered) i am confused as to why a recall has not been issued.
On 12-31-2007 my husband and i were coming home from a restaurant. We live in the country,so there are no street lights and it was late at night. We were driving home and all of a sudden our lexus stopped accelerating was no place to pull off the road, needless to say the vehicle would not pull in drive or reverse. Si we had to sit there in the road. After a period of time the lexus would pull again not far and then it would quit pulling. I believe this is a safety hazard and something has to be done about it. Since january 2008 i have read so many complaints on the internet people having the same problem. I filed a report with nhtsa and as far as i know there has not been an investigation you don't think transmission failure is a hazard please let me know. I don't have the money to have the transmission fixed,my lexus will pull a short distant so if know one thinks this is important enough to do an investigation or no one sees the hazard that could happen. Then i am left with no choice but to start driving my 1999 lexus rx 300. I have been waiting since january 2008 and nothing has been done nor have i heard back from anyone. And as far as the dealership all i get is the run around. And to tell you the truth i am tired of it. Someone please give us consumers an answer we deserve that much. To this day i have no vehicle to drive. Do i see a hazard yes.someone please hear our cries. We need your help.
Began with very rough idle.transmission then refuses to shift to overdrive gear.
The transmission failed in my 1999 lexus rx300 with no warning at only 97,000 miles.
This is my second transmission failure in this vehicle.if you read any lexus owner's blog, you will realize that the early rx300 models have a seriously high fail rate for transmissions.most fail around 80k miles.mine has averaged 70k miles per transmission.lexus really need to own up to their design flaw.
I am the owner a 1999 lexus rx 300 that had a transmission failure. Depending on who i talk to it will cost anywhere from $4000 to $6500 to repair the vehicle. I found out since this failure that this is a common problem with this vehicle. My source for this information has been the internet, transmission repair shops and the dealership employees themselves. This a well known problem that has been known for a while. Lexus should do the right thing and recall these vehicles to correct this problem. I should not have to pay for a transmission that has a design flaw.thank you
I own a 99 rx300 awd. Purchased the car from a dealership corporation that also owned lexus of serramonte in sf bay area at 68k miles. The vehicle apparently had all services done on time as my dealer noted and was serviced at their facility since the vehicle left their dealer lot. So the car was locally owned and repaired.at 74k my transmission started to act up where i found the car to be bellow 20% of its temperature the car will either not shift into 4th or over drive.my dealer told me to replace the transmission fluid but that only worsened the problem where if the engine is bellow that temperature it will start jumping when going from 1st to 2nd, and takes a while to shift between gears. The dealer tells me that this is normal operation of any car at 90k miles. Now my biggest problem is that my car stalls if it''s at it normal temperature after starting it up, it will die, unless i keep the pedal depressed for fuel to flow into the engine after the starter disables.i owned plenty of cars well over 20 and never had any of my vehicles ever had a similar problem except one car that has been totaled twice in its entire life.this is not a normal vehicle behavior nor appropriate dealer response when trying to keep a great customer relationship. This creates a lot of distrust and feeling that you're having your leg pulled.this is an issue that needs to be addressed by the vehicle manufacturer and turned into a recall, as i am finding out that 90% of 99-2000 lexus rx300's out there have the exact same problem.
I have had continued problems, that at times left me stranded.the transmission has broke on various occasions.at this time it left me without the 3rd and the overdrive gear (4th) while driving on a main interstate causing a hazard due to the speed in which i was traveling.the posted speed was 65, buti could only travel at 35mph.
Our 1999 rx300 has only 70,000 miles and the transmission failed while my wife was driving on a very busy street. The failure was very dangerous because she was in the midst of traffic when she could not maneuver her car safely to the curb.she was able after sitting in traffic for awhile to restart the car and move the car over to the curb. She called for a tow truck which towed the car to our mechanic's shop. The cost for a rebuilt transmission will cost us $5000.after search the internet, we have found that many many !999 rx300 owners have had the same problem and with many dangerous situations of being without power to move safely off freeways andhighways. Tthere ought to be a manufacturer's recall on this car and a charge to toyota america to develop a fix for the problem before someone is killed because of this problem with the transmission.has there been any media investigations into this? lexus being the flagship for toyota, you would think that toyota would take care of this problem without having their arms twisted.
Transmission had slipping problems about 6 months ago. Drained trans & changed filters. Removed shift solenoids & checked to see if they operated. Road tested fairly good. Found out from reputable trans repair person that this particular year model trans has had many problems that lexus has not been addressing. They can rebuild trans but cannot update computer for the shifting problems which will ruin trans during test drive. Now my trans will not go into reverse.
1999 lexus rx 300 transmission broke on freeway.seems this is very common among these cars.they know about it and are burying their head in the sand and not helpful at all.we need a class action lawsuit.
While running local errands on 9-1-08, my 1999 lexus rx 300 suv experienced sudden failure of awd automatic transmission, resulting in rapid deceleration and momentary loss of control.the vehicle was towed to local toyota dealer, which stated that transmission was destroyed and had to be replaced.estimated cost is $5,100.
Hi, i am owner of lexus rx300 awd. The rx300 transmission broken down at 115k miles. I was on highway going 60 mph without any warning the transmission broken. I did some research and found out that rx300 has a very high rate failure on transmission.
Lexus rx300 1999 model complete transmission failure at just over 100k miles. Based on internet comments this is a real problem that should be a recall.cost to replace is from $3500-4500.on an expensive car like this, it is crazy.
Thank you.
The transmission on this car went completely dead last week. The car was running fine and then it suddenly would not go anywhere. You can put the car in gear and push gas but it won't budge.i got it towed to a lexus dealership and they confirmed that the transmission was gone.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300.the contact stated that the vehicle would not move and the engine revved while attempting to accelerate from a stop.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they replaced the transmission, which had only 90,000 miles.the repair was not covered under warranty.she paid for her new transmission, but after 6,000 miles, the vehicle involuntarily accelerates.she will return to the dealer to have the vehicle inspected.the speed and mileage information were unknown.
The transmission of our 1999 lexus rx300 failed suddenly and completely while at highway speed.the transmission seemed to be in neutral and no longer in drive.this was a dangerous situation on an interstate highway in heavy traffic.the transmission was replaced at our expense since the drivetrain was out of warranty.a cursory search of the internet shows that this is a common failure in the 1999 rx300 and is well known to lexus.this type of complete failure is not normal.lexus should be warning of the possibility of this failure and helping to prevent/correct it.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300.while driving less than 75 mph, the vehicle dropped to low gear and would not accelerate past 25 mph.the dealer stated that the transmission failed.the repairs were made at the contact's expense.less than four years later, while traveling after an extended drive, he attempted to accelerate from a stop sign.the vehicle hesitated and would not shift into gear.the vehicle continued to slip into first gear intermittently.an independent mechanic serviced the vehicle and stated that the transmission either needed to be rebuilt or replaced.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 130,000 and current mileage was 240,000.
1999 lexus rx 300 vehicle 99,000 miles in very good repair suddenly stalls due to transmission failure on the freeway. No previous warning. I was very fortunate to "coast" off the highway into a safe area to stop the vehicle. It would no longer move, transmission was reported to be dead by two mechanics. After researching this model there are many reports about transmission failures some causing accidents and injuries. Neither was the case with my incident but it is a disturbing trend.
I have a popping in the steering column. I hope that the steering is not lost from this popping.
Wife driving 1999 rx300 lexus w/ awd and it just stopped and unable to engage reverse due to transmission failure. It was towed home and after some inquiries just parked until enough money can be raised to attempt repair(very costly).
My 99 lexus rx300 had a transmission failure @ 82000 miles.after being serviced properly on a regular basis by authorized repair specialists.
Have a lexus rx 300 1999 model with 4x4 drive. The car ran ok for 80,000 miles or so. Our current mileage is around 81,000. The car was being driven on an expressway when it got really slow (15 mph) and then stopped on its own. I barely avoided a major accident.anyways, i took the car to a repair shop and they tell me the transmission needs to be replaced and will cost me 4800 to do so. Please help.apparently this is a very common problem for rx 300 1999-2000 models. The google search online brings up tons of blogs mentioning the same problem.here is a copy of one of the blogs posted on http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_54694_2.htmlmany lexus cars are equipped with a defective transmission that fails prematurely. Lexus admits this, but will not back up their product when the event occurs out of warranty (7/70) - unless the vehicle was purchased and serviced exclusively at a lexus dealership. Since the manufacture is responsible for the replacement costs (not the dealer), the practice of replacing only dealer-serviced cars appears arrogant and discriminatory. If repair records can be provided showing that transmission service was done according to the dealer service intervals - and by a certified garage - then the manufacturer should back up their product regardless.in our particular case, we have a babied 1999 rx300 that started making odd noises while in the warranty period, and then failed completely (post-warranty). The dealer has declined our request for a redesigned replacement transmission free of charge. We have submitted a claim through the lexus customercare number (1.800.448.1505), but understand that the manufacturer simply follows the recommendation of the dealer in question. In other words, we're at the mercy of the dealer and their discriminatory policy. We're still awaiting the manufacturer judgment, but hold out very little hope.
My 1999 lexus rx300 transmission suddenly broke while driving. The rpms went up then the car would not move. Transmission fluid was full. The car service record is as recommended by lexus. Mileage around 110,000m. I found on the web hundreds of similar reported problems but the dealership says this is an isolated problem. Please check it out and take action to have lexus stand behind the car. Luckily no one was injured.
Jan 2004-vehicle was taken to an independent garage to determine cause of gear failure between 2nd and 3rd.failure could not be determined.mar 2004-vehicle was taken in again to independent garage to determine cause of gear failure between 2nd and 3rd.failure could not be determined.septembe r 2004-vehicle was towed to dealer after gear failure in reverse and shudder in forward.failure could not be determined.nov2004--vehicle was again towed to dealer after shudder while in drive and then gear failure in reverse and forward.diagnosis need complete transmission assembly.
My 1999 rx300 lexus lost it's transmission at 110,000 miles. I paid to have the transmission replaced.the new transmission now failed again.the sun gear, ring gear and 4 planet gears on that one stage have extensive tooth fracture. Failures of this type can generally be attributed to one or more of the following causes: 1. Poor design analysis resulting in improper gear selection resulting in tooth overload and tooth fracture. 2. Improper alignment at assembly resulting in non-equal load distribution leading to fatigue fracture of the teeth. 3. Foreign material, getting into the planetary gearing from either contamination at assembly or breakdown of other components within the transmission.
I have owned a 1999 lexus rx 300 since it was new.now has 98,000 miles and transmission went out yesterday. I have read and talked to service people that said the 1999 and 2000 models have transmission defects but the service people tell me it will cost between $4 to $5,000 to repair.this is on a car that is worth about $7,000, doesn't make sense to repair.with all of toyota's problems this rx300 should be on recall!
Noticed inability of the transmission to consistently upshift into overdrive in freeway conditions with minimum load, flat surface.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300. The contact stated that she noticed a noise on the front end of the vehicle and within a few minutes while drivingapproximately 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly stopped moving forward. She turned the vehicle off and tried to restart it; however, after 10 attempts to restart the vehicle she was unable to do so. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer offered her a 50% discount off of the total repair costs. The vehicle had not been repaired to-date. The current and failure mileages were 86,192.
Ongoing problem with erratic jerking. Also, front wheel would commence to spin, and tracking light would come on.vehicle been in dealer shop on four occasions, and problemstill reoccurring. Please feel free to provide further details.
On december 29, 2008 the transmission in my 1999 lexus rx 300 failed in rush hour traffic. I have since learned that this is an existing issue with the 1999-2000 lexus rx 300 and has not been recalled by the toyota motor company, usa. I am disturbed that toyota has not taken the responsibility and recalled the vehicle.please contact me.
My 1999 lexus rx 300 transmission failed while i was traveling at 70 mph down the highway.the dealer agrees my service record was in "tiptop" shape and yet i lost all gears with66,000 miles on the car.searching the internet reveals that there are many instances of this same problem.of course,my warranty just expired 4 months ago.lexus offered to split the $5000 replacement cost in half.it seems to me they should cover 100% of the cost.
1999 lexus rx 300 91k miles, owned since new, all service at dealer as required, transmission just went out. Found a website with many complaints, same thing, low miles. Obviously a dealer defect, this is not right!i bought a lexus so it would be reliable.my chevy silverado 1993 is going stronger than this car.since i bought the car, it did not upshift right.lexus always said this was not a problem.i notice other people complaining of the same symptom.this failure was sudden other than that.just in a parking lot & suddenly it would not shift going forward.1 1/2 years ago my mechanic happened to check my tranny fluid, it was black. He drained & replaced it.i was livid, i had paid for all dealer maintenance.that was at roughly 80k miles.supposedly this was done at 60k miles by lexus (i'm not sure if they did the work now, or not) there were metal shavings in the fluid.something appears to be wrong with this design, and looks like they did a bandaid in later models.i am seriously considering getting a class action lawsuit against them, i should not have to pay $5k for a new tranny now, that is whyi boughta lexus.my celica was still going strong at 175k miles when i sold it.check this website:http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/lexus/rx300/r54694/comments/page-2/[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
At 68k miles, i took to independent garage in january & march 2004 with problem of vehicle hesitating to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Garage could not duplicate problem and changed transmission fluid. I let vehicle warm up 2 minutes to avoid the shifting problem.in september & october with 72k miles, i took to dealer with additional problem of failing to engage the reverse gear and shuddering in forward gear. Dealer could not duplicate and changed the transmission fluid. In november 2004, the transmission dropped completely out of gear while driving on the street.this time dealer found metal shavings in the transmission fluid and said i needed $4250 to replace with a remanufactured transmission warranted for only 12 months.lexus should have paid to replace their defective transmission instead of hiding their head in the sand.
I bought a '99 lexus rx300 for my wife at 62k miles.i did all of the schedule maintenance including the expensive stuff (like the timing belt change).unbeknownst to me, the engine rear main seal was leaking at the time that i purchased it.i figured it was simple and "its a lexus, right?".i found out that it would cost $1700 to fix and that it was common on this model.i ignored the leak because my wife loved the truck otherwise.unrelated to the oil leak, at 183,000 miles i'm driving on a family vacation with the car on cruise control and the transmission suddenly starts to slip.i manage to make it my destination, but after research and getting diagnostics from the dealership and trans shops, i found it would cost $3000-$4000 to fix. I decided to fix it and paid $3700 for it.no sooner than i took off driving, the car started smoking horribly and was now slipping in 1,2, and 3rd gear.these transmissions are a nightmare to repair, and i would recommend anyone that buys one to count your losses when it fails and trash the car.
Transmission failure 1999 lexus rx 300.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx 300.while shifting in reverse or second gear the vehicle hesitated.the local mechanic on 02/11/07 stated that the transmission and the planetary assembly needed to be replaced.the current and failure mileage was 87,000. Update 4/9
Transmission failure at 110k miles; required transmission replacement.
The car was working perfectly. One day while stopped at a red light the transmission blew, and i could not move. Had to pay $4000+ out of pocket, the warranty just expired 2 months before and lexus would not stand by their product. The car had approximately 80,000 miles. After doing research, it turns out hundreds of people on the internet experience the same problem in the rx300 1999 and 2000 awd. How can lexus not be held responsible for a recall. They refuse to acknowledge any fault, but i find it hard to believe when so many people experience the same problem.
After having my transmission replaced by lexus of roseville, california the remanufactured transmission from lexus dropped out of gear during moving traffic, endangering my family with the loss of drive in heavy traffic.
During normal driving - the engine started to rev higher than normal - barely got the car home (2 1/2 miles) - going down the road with a 55mph speed limit at 20 mph, the next day i took the car for a short test drive and it would not shift - will be taking the car (99 rx300) to a shop to have it fixed.
The lexus rx300 had 123000 miles on it. The transmission failed in the middle of the road when traffic was at its peak. I have learnt after the fact that the rx300 transmission prone to failure and lexus had not posted any information regarding this.
Even though having all major service performed to the lexus owners manual specs, the transmission failed at 110k miles, left my wife stranded in a remote location, and nearly caused an accident.it needs replacing at a cost of $4000. I am aware of hundreds of others who have had similar problems with the rx300.
At 67,000, my transmission would not shift. Fortunately, this occurred in my driveway and not on the road. No warning, just no transmission. After replacing transmission, check engine light stuck on. Replaced a broken sensor. I am out $4,000.00 for a defect that i believe lexus is very aware of.
My wife was driving home from work @ midnight in her 1999 lexus rx300 with 98,000 miles andtransmission goes out with no previous signs of malfunction.now a new transmission is needed at the price of $4000.many other owners of the lexus rx300 have the same problems and feel lexus should be responsible for poor product.
While driving my lexus rx300 i heard a slight pop under the front. And the car stopped. I was told the transmission went bad. The car has 128,000 miles.
'99 lexus rx300 with 157,000. Transmission died. It started jerking and had trouble shifting. I was able to limp about 5 miles to the dealer. I had read about a number of these failing and paid extra at the last regular service to have the transmission flushed in addition to the regular service. That was 1,000 before failure. Lexus charged $4700 out the door to diagnose and replace the transmission with a rebuilt one.
Transmission went out of my 1999 lexus rx300.
Transmission failure at 169k with no warning, car has been fully serviced according to lexus guidelines. Dealer wants $5k to replace the transmission.
The transmission on my 1999 lexus rx300 failed.there was little to no indication of the problem before full failure occurred.my wife was driving the vehicle when it stalled and was almost in an accident.this looks to be a very common problem with this vehicle.it will cost me $5000 to repair.
Transmission failure in a lexus rx300.
I purchased a lexus rx300 in october 2009.the car has been maintained and proper fluids checked or replaced.on february of 2010 the transmission went out.no warning lights indicating that there was an issue with engine or transmission.now i am told that it will cost approximately 4400k to replace. As i research i come to find out that i have purchased a top of line vehicle with a mid class transmission (camry). Car is sitting in driveway still no check engine or warning lights.something is wrong with this picture.
The transmission completely failed.could not drive the vehicle.occurred on the freeway at 60 mph.
I am trying to decide what to do at this rock and hard place with my 1999 lexus rx that i purchased new. I love this car, however since the warranty ended, i've had a series of problems. Sensors mostly and a check engine light that always seems to be linked to co2 issues.it has been on and off for about three years now. Finally, i had a checkup done when my car started to infrequently shudder when it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd gear or delay reverse when put in gear. Nothing showed up engine/transmission wise...... Thought it was an alignment problem with the tires so had it realigned.problem still remains and appears to be worsening and i'm getting concerned about driving it.the car has 86,000 miles on it and i have always had the lexus dealership do the scheduled maintenance when appropriate.this is a very poor quality issue for a company who claims to have quality as their main goal. I guess they just don't claim to have "good or great" quality as their motto. I will be shouting this loud and clear to all of my friends.
First failure happened during a left turn at a busy multi-lane intersection.transmission dropped out of gear instead of shifting leaving me powerless at a very vulnerable time.the vehicle had sufficient momentum that i managed to drift up and over an adjacent curb.i was at the mercy of alert drivers in the intersection at the time.a lexus rebuilt transmission was installed by a toyota mechanic. After 12 months and many attempts at getting the engine light to remain extinguished i was advised today by lexus of calgary that thesecond transmission is now failing.the first transmission and now this one are failing to shift when required most, recently while attempting to accelerate during a lane change. It is dangerous to not have power when you need it most.
138,000 used vehicle. Upon purchase did timing belt, water pump and all belts. Then had a transmission flush.went on a 500 mile round trip and upon returning lost overdrive. Made it home then next day a severe lose of power and trans would not shift. After restarting would shift but no overdrive.after investigating found hundreds of similar incidents when you query lexus transmission failure.i can understand losing a transmission but reading all these complainants it is clear that this product is defective.
I am the owner of a '99 lexus rx 300 with only 60k miles on it.i recently experienced serious transmissions problems.it first started when i tried to get out of my parking space and could not put my car in reverse.the car would not respond for the first initial attempts and then it violently jerked into reverse.i took my car to my mechanic and he diagnosed a transmission problem.i am having a rebuilt transmission put in the car for $2000, which appears pretty competitive compared to the average price of $4k that is being quoted over the internet.lexus should be responsible for paying for this obvious defect in this make and model vehicle.
Lexus rx300, transmission shift problems at gear 3 and 4. Rpm goes over 4000, irrespective of warm or cold engine. I have an engine light code 0765 (solenoid shift d malfunction).
Even though having all major service performed by the lexus dealer, plus having the transmission fluid and filter changed twice, the transmission failed and needs replacing at a high cost.i am aware of hundreds of others who have had similar problems with the rx300.
Transmission failure.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300.the contact stated that the he was unable to drive more than 5 mph.the mechanic drained the transmission fluid; however, the failure continued to occur.in addition, they recommended that the transmission be replaced.the manufacturer offered a $1,500 voucher towards the repair; but the contact declined the offer.the current and failure mileages were 87,082.
Transmission failure at 145k no warning 4k to repair.
I was driving on a interstate and the transmission started slipping until it gave out.
Lexus rx300 transmission failure at 100,000 miles.
1999 lexus rx-300.i have 94,000 miles on it, original owner.have gotten every scheduled maintenance service on it including 30,000 , 60,000 and 90,000 miles service in october 2008.now march 2009 and have complete transmission failure at 94,000 miles when i had 92,000 miles on my car for its service in october 2008.saw all the talk on the internet about thousands of people in same situation and lexus customer service says they have no idea what i am referring to!
Complete transaxle failure - at 91000 miles, the transmission onthe 1999 awt lexus racks failed at 50 mph without warning.although the engine was running normally, there was a sudden loss ofpower to the drive wheels and the car coasted to a stop.this happened on a narrow country road with heavy traffic and it was only luck that avoided an accident.the car had been routinely serviced as required by lexus and had been in for a routine service the day prior. Review of the nhtsa complaint database suggests that this is not an isolated incident and, if so, it represented a serious safety concern for this model and year of car, in general. It wasvery troubling that any vehicle would have the type of defect that could lead to an unannounced sudden major failure at less than 100000 miles. The repair required replacement of the transmission.lexus was contacted for more information, but was of no help beyond noting that the car was no longer under warranty.lexus required that the removed transaxle be returned to them, unopened.
My daughter was driving her 1999 lexus rx300 to work when, in heavy traffic, the transmission completely disengaged almost causing her to have an accident.several cars almost hit her while she tried to navigate the car off the roadway to a safe place.carried the car to the local toyota dealer (there is no local lexus dealer here) and was told the transmission would need to be replaced and the cost would be $3,700.there were no advanced indications the transmission was having problems it just suddenly quit working.this is a very dangerous scenario and we are blessed that our daughter was not involved in an accident due to the transmission failure.
The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300. The contact stated while driving 40 mph uphill there was a burning smell and the vehicle stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contactdrove the vehicle onto the shoulder. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who stated the transmission failed. The dealer stated there were no recalls and the repair cost would be $5000. The manufacturer advised the contact that a representative would return the call. The failure mileage was 89,000.
Lexus 1999 rx 300 awd transmission failed - marked drop of acceleration power on freeway.since original purchase of new vehicle, it has received regular service maintenance through the dealership.last service included a flush of the transmission.problem experienced at 74,000 miles.dealership advised that lexus no longer offers a transmission rebuild and that i needed to take it to a transmission repair shop (found out later that's not entirely true).transmission has been rebuilt including solenoids, planetaries, torque converter, sun gear) at cost of over $4,200.i've since discovered that several '99 rx300 owners have experienced transmission failure or issues at relatively low odometer mileages, and lexus customer service has acknowledged this as well.
Rx300 1999 transmission died at about 160,000 km (100,000 miles):engine will start and then from 50-60 kmph die down after driven for a little while.got the car towed to a repair shop where it is waiting to be fixed.i live in ontario, canada.i went to lexus owners forum and found numerous other owners of rx300 complaining about the tranny failure at around 75,000-85,000 miles.other owners are frustrated and complaining about the poor design by lexus for this part and also strongly feel that lexus should be responsible for the repair costs. I also own es300 1993 whose tranny also failed about 2 years ago at about 220,000 km (137,500 miles) and i got a used one replaced and paid for it myself about $2,000 cdn. One of the owners in the forum mentioned about "sludge" in the transmission admitted by one of the lexus customer service representative being the cause of the tranny failures.my family only drive lexus cars as mentioned above and are very disappointed with the tranny problems with both and feel very strongly that lexus should pay for it's repair.
Catastrophic failure of transmission due to fatigue of internal part resulting in total failure.*la
In november 2006, the transmission on my 1999 rx300 unexpectedly failed.while traveling home, the car started to rev up, but would not move - as if in neutral.i had the rx towed to local lexus dealer, and was told that it was the transmission and i could probably save money by going to a transmission rebuilder.i had the work done - around $5000. My rx has been regularly serviced and had 130k miles on it at the time of the event.now, i'm hearing that this may be a common problem.
Transmission locked up at @55mph on rt 100 on a clear warm sunny day while driving in a straight line. The wheels locked up and the 99 lexus rx300 spun 220 degrees into anadjacent stone lined drainage ditch. Len stoler lexus replaced the transmission.
The transmission on the1999 rx 300 wa s serviced exclusively by performance lexus, started to slip, and by the time i got it home it had no gearing.i had a problem with it one year ago, and took it to my dealer, who said they could not find anything wrong.
My 1999 lexus rx-300 automatic transmission failed to engage in higher gear and continued at 2nd gear. I have flushed the atf with original toyota type 4 atf fluid every 30k miles. This vehicle has always been well-maintained regularly and driven under normal driving condition.
Transmission failure.
I have had idle problems for over a year. Then abruptly while driving on surface streets my transmission quit shifting. The transmission had totally failed. This lexus 1999 rx300 has hundreds of consumer complaints with the same problem. I was lucky enough to get 142,000 miles before it failed. I had planned to drive this car for over 200,000 miles knowing it was a toyota vehicle. In the past, toyota's were valued for their durability and reliability. I was very lucky this did not happened at high speeds.
Lexus rx300-have owned car since beginning 1999-never had a problem with car except normal tune ups and new brakes-however, that all changed september 2004. Yes, i've had the car 6 six years but with only 68,000 miles on the car which is considered low mileage use. While traveling to san diego to take my granddaughter back home from my current home at the time in aliso viejo, california my auto while on the i-5 just completely dropped out of gear-i had enough speed going that i was able to get off the freeway and came to a stop at the camp pendleton marine base front gates. The soldiers were able to push my car behind their station gate until aaa could send a truck to tow me and for my son to pick up my granddaughter there. My transmission was completely gone and cost me over $4,000.00 to get it fixed. I was told by the repairman that the planetary gear is what broke but that lexus has had to update the planetary gear for my model and year 4 (four) times. It sounds to me that lexus knows that they had a problem with this main gear and i want to know why there was never a recall to have it fixed. Lexus is rated tops so why would my transmission go out at only 68,000 miles? i had no choice but to have it repaired immediately because i was moving to florida in two weeks and didn't have the time or wheels to take my complaint to the dealer.is there any recourse since the planetary gear was clearly defective?
Ongoing problem with erratic jerking. Also, front wheel would commence to spin, and tracking light would come on.vehicle been in dealer shop on four occasions, and problemstill reoccurring. Please feel free to provide further details.
While driving, the gear shift will go into neutral, if bumped. Also i've noticed the car jerking while driving. I've taken it to an authorized dealership, but they never observed the problem and thus was never able to fix it.
There was a power distribution problem in the transfer case which caused the wheels to lock up at 60mph. Dlr is replacing transfer case.
When the temperture is 50 degrees or lower outside vehicle does not perform properly. Owners guide says after2 minutesvehicle should be ready to operate, but while driving it takes vehicle 3 minutes to shift up to 3rd gear, causing the vehicle to travel at 30 mph or less. Dealer has been contacted.

The right rear wheel axle sheared in two, causing the wheel to fall off.the vehicle became violent, then completely rolled over.none of the airbags deployed.we would like a complete investigation.
Car begins to lurchboth backing up and accelerating in the low gears. The computer erroneously tells the clutch to engage, thus blowing the transmission. I have neck pain from the lurching; it feels as though you are getting hit from behind. Because of the jumping, it could also be very easy to rear end someone. Many owners have reported this on various blogs, including 12 pages at edmunds.com. The cost to replace both the computer and the transmission ranges from $4000-8000 depending on whether or not you use the dealership. Toyota/lexus recognizes this as a common problem and has corrected it in newer models, however every older car has this dangerous problem.
The wheels of a 1999 rx300 locked up at highway speed causing the vehicle to spin 220 degrees and crash into a drainage ditch. Transfer case was replaced by dealer/insurance co. Abs sensors are rusting at the wheels and require repair after only 23 months/27k miles since the last abs sensor overhaul. Lexus has the transfer case.
The passenger side, rear seatbelt is not working correctly.it keeps getting stuck in the track.
Seat belt does not retract properly. I changed back seats, but driver's one is not working either. Help!

The seatbelts in my lexus rx300 do not retract all the way. Toyota made a feeble attempt to fix this by placing teflon tape or something like that on the clip that holds the belt up, but it does not work. I have contacted the dealer about it at least three times and they refuse to do anything about it. It is a dangerous situation: if i get into a car accident, the seat belt will be too slack.
This car is a severe safety hazard.headlights dim to daytime running lights at night, transmission lurches between 2nd and 3rd gear and seat belt malfunctions.
Consumer states seat belts will not retract properly.
Seat belt does not retract properly & has come loose from the car frame.
The heated seat in my lexus rx300 has become so hot that it has burnt the leather and it has also burnt my left leg. You can turn the heater off but it takes a while for it to cool down.
1999 lexus rx 300. Consumer writes in regards to brake failure and acceleration issues while driving vehicle at 60mph. *ld
This week i got a flat tire, a screw in tire. One tire shop wouldn't repair it, so i parked the car a few days after they put the full-size spare on it. Then i drove it 20 miles with the spare, and it started activating the abs when i brake at gentle/normal speeds. So i had the flat tire repaired and thought the problem would go away. There is no change with the fixed tired put back on/balanced. The car activates abs every time i brake pretty much now. I do have awd, but this should not happen. I just bought this vehicle 3 months ago used & had it thoroughly inspected prior to purchasing it. This is a safety issue!
While driving the abs started activating when the brakes were applied and once the car speed was less than 20-25 mph or so.this now happens every time the brakes are applied and as soon as the speed drops below 20-25mph.the local lexus service department diagnosed the problem as a "cracked activator" which could be replaced for $1200.00 parts and $800.00 labor.are there other complaints regarding this issue?
Automobile was a perfectly functioning 1999 certified pre-owned lexus rx300 under a bumper to bumper 'new car warranty'. Auto was consistently serviced by lexus of palm beach. The automobile was consumed by 20 ft. Flames in about 15 minutes while parked in our driveway shortly after midnight. The garage was about 6 ft. Away and caught fire.fortunately a neighbors dog awoke them and the firemen arrived to put the final car flames out and stop the fire on the garage. We slept through the entire incident and were awoken by a fireman. The exact cause is still a mystery.the arson investigator ruled out arson, the responding fire chief ruled out weather related causes.both the arson and the insurance investigators determined the ignition point at the rear left tire.both concluded that possibly an over heated brake was to blame.i and the legal department at toyota motor sales agree that this explanation is impossible since the car had not been driven in two days and it rained heavily during those two days.i have encouraged them to do their own investigation. To date no response.three months have elapsed and lexus has shown no interest in this matter. I am especially concerned for the safety of small children when flames can erupt so unexpectedly and consume a car so quickly.on our street of 34 houses there are at least 10 other lexus owners.one has confided that he parks his car further from the garage now as a result of what he witnessed.he also is the father of an 18 month old son who would be buckled into a car seat just above that ignition point.
Abs engages every time brakes are applied, increasing stopping distance, and causing a potential hazard.

1999 lexus rx300.five days after discs, calipers, pads replaced, the right front caliper fell off while i was driving on interstate 80 at 65 mph.the car began to violently shake and veer to the right.i was able to safely get the car off the road.the lexus dealer confirmed that the caliper fell off and was wedged between the rim of the wheel and the disc.the bolts were missing.the service manager did not know if the bolts broke from a manufacturing defect or a service defect.

I have a popping in the steering column. I hope that the steering is not lost from this popping.

While driving on the freeway after approximately 5 hours on the road, the vehicle caught fire dropping melting, burning debris onto the roadway.the car had 16,000 miles at the time.a plastic "under engine cover" and two vacuum hoses were destroyed.the vehicle was towed to the dealer who said there was no responsibility on their part for the fire or damage.they suggested a plastic bag or similar object blew up from the roadway setting the vehicle components on fire.another suggestion was that a service person left something in the engine compartment.the vehicle hadn't been serviced for almost 4 months and had been driven over 1000 miles since the last service.no signs of burning were found on other engine components.we don't believe that the dealer's explanation of a piece of trash blown underneath the car should set vehicle components on fire and suspect a possible defect in design or construction.
Whenever the vehicle is parked, rodents can find their way inside the vehicle. Has happened at least 4 times. A poor structure design for vehicle. Have taken to dealer. Could not find cause of problem.
Wind deflector became disconnected from vehicle due to the weak nylon nut insert, screws and crude workmanship.nlm
Tires are not aligned properly, causing the vehicle not to meet specifications. Vehicle may have had prior damage.
Failure began as a thumping in right front. Progressively got worse although dealer could not find problem. Continued until such time that manufacturer rep got involved at which time parts were finally replaced. Manufacturer stated that they were aware of this problem in other similar vehicles but apparently did not notify owners.
While driving 40 mph or less on rough surfaces the front suspension produced a loud noise. Consumer believed the noise came from an improper shaping of rubber bushing of the suspension support.
I thought that i had previously filled out a questionnaire with nhtsa, so this may be a duplicate, but we were unable to locate it so i thought to file a second one.this vehicle was involved in a minor fender bender in which a plymouth voyager hit the rear left of the vehicle while travelling approximately 10mph.my wife (sophia roslin), who was driving the vehicle, and the other driver, exchanged insurance information but did not intend to file a claim as the damage seemed minor.sophia then parked the vehicle and attended a birthday party that my 3 year-old daughter was attending.after the party, approximately 90 minutes later, sophia again began driving the car and headed home.after driving approximately one mile, and without feeling any pulling, dragging or tugging, sophia was alerted by good samaritan that the rear left tire was on fire (unfortunately, i don't recall the make or manufacturere of the tire, but it was the standard tires that come with the lexus rx300).sophia escaped the car along with my daughter.the fire wound up engulfing the vehicle, melting the car seat and totalling the car.
Goodyear integrity tires (p225/70r16) were not designed to hold the weight of a sport utility vehicle according to a dealer, three of the consumer's tires have experienced blowouts or have gone flat.
The right rear tire failed.
During hard acceleration from a standing start, on dry pavement, the left front tire loses traction and spins free, causing vehicle to go to the left. After turning steering wheel, vehicle goes to the right and back off the accelerator, the tire grabs and vehicle violently goes to the right, resulting in loss of control.
Delamination of tire wire from matrx at 18,000 & 22,000 miles(two tires)( dot number: tire size: p8225/7016 )
We have had 3 tire failures within 20 months of owning our lexus rx-300.goodyear is telling us that lexus should not use this tire on an suv, it is a car tire, and use of this tire isn't approved by goodyear.the tire sidewall is making contact with the pavement because the suv is heavier than a car.lexus has since switched to bridgestone truck tires on the rx300.we would like lexus to pay for our tires to be changed out to safer, appropriate tires. (dot number: m65ltiresize: 225/70r16)
Consumer was driving through a park andher left front tire blew out on the sidewall. Tires are made for highway driving only, and vehicle's manual does not identify the tires that are on the car.dealership say the tires are factory installed.
The 1999 lexus rx 300 transmission failed with only 125k miles on it. Based on the discussion boards, i believe that lexus is covered up a design flaw in particular models. We as owners deserve to be confronted and lexus should replace the transmission at no cost to customer. Infact lexus should be penalized for not recalling the transmissions.

The contact owns a 1999 lexus rx300. While driving approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal was engaged slightly toprepare for a turn when the vehicle failed to reduce speed. The vehicle continued to accelerate even though the brake pedal was applied forcefully. The vehicle then traveled over the curb and crashed into a cement barrier. The rear passenger suffered minor injury to the shoulder. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 97,000.

My wife was driving her lexus 300 rx to a grocery store when car stopped to react on the accelator pedal, then suddenly, the lexus very strongly accelerated - this also happend before - and its very scary. Case # [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I was slowly backing up through a narrow exit, and then i put the car in drive, slowly pressed the accelerator and the car just took off like a bullet, i hit the wall of a house, i was about 10 or 15 feet from the wall,it was so unexpected, fast and scary that i froze, i was with three other people in the car, we were lucky that nobody got hurt. The car was a total loss. This is the only time this happened.
3 episodes of severe acceleration terminated by shifting to neutral.in each case the rpm cycled from 3,000 to 8,000 and then spontaneously returned to normal after about a minute. In neutral gear. I was unable to overcome acceleration by braking.the gas petal fell to floor each time but was not stuck and returned to normal after the episode was over.these 3 events occurred in a single week.i felt there was some malfunction of the cruise control--which i never use.i had the cruise control disconnected at a local garage and never had another problem.when i told the lexus dealer about this at the next routine service visit, they said they had never heard anything like this and did not suggest further action.i never reconnected the cruise control. I report this now because of the current concerns. This was clearly electronic in some fashion and i believe involved the cruise control mechanism.
Consumer was involved in a frontal collision in which vehicle rolled over and landed on the roof.upon impact, driver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy. Also the engine would not cut off.please give any further details.

The current and failure mileages were 91000.
Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration while backing into the car port, the accelerator pedal stuck ,causing the vehicle to crash through a wall.
