1993 lexus ls 400 instrument cluster failure - speedometer, tachometer and gas gauge do not work in cold weather until vehicle warms up.occasionally the electroluminescent instrument lighting fails too.either situation results in a safety concern related to vehicle operation.dealer explained that this model year has a problem with the circuit board that controls the instrument cluster.as other complainants have stated, this clearly seems to be a recurrent and common failure in this vehicle and impedes the safe operation of the vehicle.i would ask the nhtsa to investigate and determine if a recall is warranted.

Dt: the contact stated while drivingthe back lighting for the gauge cluster did not come on, until the vehicle was warm. The mileage was not recorded properly.the fuel gaugemalfunctioned, causingthe vehicle to run out of gasoline. Also, the headlights did no stay lighted in the darkness, andnothing on the dashboard was working correctly. The vehicle was taken to a dealership for inspection, andthey determined the circuit board needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted. No repairswere made.updated 01/23/06.

Hello, have a 1993 ls400, which has bad instrument cluster. No lights turn on in cold days. The fuel gauge is also not working, even the trip computer dose not record while the lights are off. It is impossible to find out how mucn fuel is left. This car is my wife's car and she is really frustrated about the whole sittuation because the gas ran out twice in last month and she was stuck on the road. Dealer are asking 1200-1500 to fix this which is not fair because this is manufacture defect they should do a recall.i bought lexus because i thought they here is thecompany in relentless persuit of perfection, maybe not i will think twice before buying lexus again.thanksjigar.

Dash display wont come on along with interior lighting when cold. Cannot see speed and cannot read my gas level. Instrument lights start to come on after a long while. When the finally come on they blink and obstructs driving at night.*nlm

The first time my ecu failed was when i was parked i want to drive and the engine would not go above 1000rmps. I got the ecu replaced this was around 2013. The second time was a month ago. I was driving home from work had a huge thud in the engine and the same thing my car could no longer go above 1000rpms and couldn't get threw the intersection. The car behind me had to slam on there breaks because my car had lost all power. I made it home and was able to get a tow truck. By the time the tow truck arrived the car would start but then completely die. Took it to a mechanic they had it for a week said it fixed itself. One hour after i got it the car started to act up again. The car is back in the shop. They had to send the ecu out to get repaired. I did some research and apparently the parts lexus used on the ecu are faulty and leek. Causing the motherboard to short. I still have not gotten my car back and don't know if the car will be fixed once they get the computer back. Please research more as this is not a cheap fix and for it to happen twice....which i'm sure you already know is not something common to have to repair on a car let alone twice. Will send more documentation once i get my car back. Or feel free to contact me.

The gauge cluster lighting on my 1993 lexus ls400 does not come on unless it is above 75 degrees or so outside or in the passanger compartment. The lighting of the gauge cluster is not just needed at night. With the gauges being electronicly lit you can't see your speed, revs, engine temp, or fuel level day or night unless the car is fully warmed up or it's hot outside. Needless to say that in the winter even during the day, the lights are no where neer warm enough to light up. Lexus has no suggestions other than replace the unit with an expensive brand new one that will have the same problem in a few years. They have not made any change to the circutry or lighting in order to accomadate for their problem.

The whole dash will not light up when the weather is cold, causing driver not to see any of the warning lights, speed, or fuel level. I believe this leaves the car occupants in a very dangerous situation. The lexus dealer wants an absurd amount of money ($1500) to fix problem, which i believe is a factory design flaw and needs to be recalled.just over researching this problem in 1 day i have found almost 50 people with the same problem from the same car.

Instrument cluster panel light failure..unable to read fuel quantity or speed..please be advised that because of the excessive complaints regarding this problem i will hold the nhtsa solely responsible for any and all accidents including speeding tickets pertaining to this vehicle as from today 09/23/06.i would strongly advise that you contact this vehicle manufacture and urge an immediate recall regarding this major safety electrical problem.

While traveling on the interstate at night-time, the lighting on the instrument panel went completely dark and it became impossible to read any of the cars instrumentation such as vehicle speed and warning indicators.at various times since then the gauges in the instrument panel have also become unreliable, these include the fuel level gauge, the speedometer, and the tachometer.at times they will not move from their "0" setting, such as when the vehicle is powered off, until they warm-upor you bang the dash with your hand and at other times they will not work at all.the lighting problem still occurs on the instruments also.the dealer said all they could do was replace the instrument panel and components in the dash at a cost of over $2000 plus labor, so often i just have to guess how fast i am driving or how much fuel is in the car as the repair would be almost as much as i paid for the car (the instruments were working when i purchased the car).

Recently the car began to stumble under acceleration while driving up a hill or merging into traffic or maintaining speed while driving on the interstate.i initially thought it was a fuel supply issue so i changed out thefuel filter, without any improvement in the problem.i was going to change the fuel pump also and while researching on the internet i learned of a problem with bad electrolytic capacitors inside the car's ecu (engine computer) which can mimic a fuel supply problem.i am a trained electronics technician, so i removed and disassembled the vehicle's ecu and replaced 2 capacitors (cost, less than $1) that i could see were bad (leaking electrolyte fluid).i test drove the car and the "fuel supply problem" was gone, it drove normally again and did not stumble when the accelerator pedal was pressed.i ordered the other 5 or 6 electrolytic capacitors in the ecu (from an outside source, the dealer will only sell a complete ecu for $2000 plus) to hopefully prevent future occurrences.in conclusion, it appears the bad capacitors are the result of a "large-scale industrial espionage foul-up".not a joke!this resulted in defective capacitors being used in many electronic assemblies (consumer electronics, automotive, household, etc.) until the issue was discovered, see www.badcaps.net for the story.i forget where i learned of the capacitor problem on the ls400, but it was just by searching online.so basically, lexus is charging customers over $2000 to repair a safety issue (that is caused by less than $5 worth of parts (retail cost) and a little soldering skills/labor) that was the result of improperly designed/manufactured electronic components from their supplier.

While driving the vehicles dash lights started to flicker then all the lights inside vehicle went out.the consumer was unable to tell how much fuel was in the vehicle.the technician stated that the entire dash needed to be replacing.*nlm*scc

Speedometer - instrument cluster lighting failure. Because of some faulty condenser spillage cluster lighting fails.

Dash functions don't work at times.speed, fuel level, etc are not indicated when car is at rest or moving.this has been a recurring problem with the result that i fear driving the car and won't sell it as it is now.at around $1800 to repair with no guarantee the replacement is not buggy, i feel betrayed and dismissed by toyota.

1993 lexus ls400 cluster light failure resulting in the dashboard lights being completely unreadable.unable to determine speed, gas level or any warning lights.read in the lexus forums that this is very common and lexus refuses to recall even though death or injury could result.

Consumer states that the dashboard lights intermittently began to turn off, the dealer informed consumer that the warranty had expired and in order to find the problem, the dashboard would need to be removed, possible electrical problem.

While driving or when first starting the vehicle the whole dash will go dark and not light back up or keep flickering.you are unable to see how fast you are going or any warning lights and the gas gauge does not work when the dash lights go out.driving alone is unsafe and even with our 2 children makes it very unsafe not knowing how fast you are going and fuel gauge not working so you could run out of fuel and left stranded with kids on the road.many complaints have been made about this problem and lexus refuses any acknowledgement of this problem and something really needs to be done!

My 1993 lexus ls400 dashlights went out while driving from atlanta, ga to miami, fl on january 8th, 2011. I could not see the speedometer or any gauges! i have sent the circuit boards to a licensed electrical engineer to get it fixed. Everything is good now but almost crashed at night and almost got a ticket because i could not see the gauges!

When the vehicle was started in the mornings, the consumer was unable to read the information on the dashboard, and then all of the lights started to flash.

My lexus 1993 ls400 instrument panel does not light up when car is started.it takes about 25 minutes of the car running until the lights start to flicker and finally come on.when they aren't on, we cannot tell how fast we going, how much gas we have and etc.i have been on many sites about this and it seems to be a very big problem with these cars.the dealers want about 2-3 grand to fix.why hasn't a recall been done about this problem.these cars are notorious for this problem. When driving at night its completely dark in the car and if we were to get pulled over for not knowing how fast we are going, we could get a ticket for the dash board lights not working."um, sir, i am not sure how fast i was going because the dash lights don't work", that's not a good answer!!lexus has fumbled the ball on this one!these are expensive cars, they need to be held responsible for putting crap parts in them.please help.

My speedometer and tach intermittently fails to operate.

The contact owns a 1993 lexus ls400.while driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions, the instrument cluster failed to display readings for the speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge.there were no warnings prior to these failures.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and it was confirmed that the instrument cluster required replacement.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were unknown.

Consumer states that the dashboard lights intermittently began to turn off, the dealer informed consumer that the warranty had expired and in order to find the problem, the dashboard would need to be removed, possible electrical problem.

The insturment panel on my 93 lexus ls400 works only when the car is warm. If there's cold enough weather it will never light up. I work about 10 minutes from home and i never can see how fast i'm going, how much gas i have, etc. The only time it ever comes on is if it's very warm out and i drive for 45 minutes or more.

Electrical problem: instrument panel.

1993 lexus ls400 malfunctioning front display panel customer is asking for a recall to be done**ccthe defective panel at times lights up initially and immediately goes off.the consumer is unable to read odometer, fuel level and temperature gauges.

Instrument cluster flickers or goes blank makeing it impossible to know how fast or slow you are going and how much gas is in the car.

1993 lexus ls400--failure of dash lights--started with flicking and proceeds to no lights at all--no way to read speed and other information.car has less then 50,000 miles and has been maintained well.

Instrument cluster does not come on until the car warms up, sometime it takes 30 minutes. You can not see how fast your going, fuel level or anything related to dash lights.

Dash light goes out, speedometer and tachometer goes out intermittently.

1993 lexus ls 400 dash lights don't work, including speedometer.

My instrument cluster lighting does not illuminate when the car is started, but sometimes will come on after several minutes.the problem has just recently started, but seems to be getting worse (taking longer for the lights to come on if at all).no steps have been taken yet to repair, but given the severity of the impact, safety concerns will probably force me to pay a significant service bill at the dealer soon.when i drive at night, the entire instrument cluster and center console is dark.even during full daylight, i can not tell how fast i am going, the fuel level, etc.the lexus club forum indicates that many others have experienced the same problem and have registered complaints with both lexus and this site.

Electrical problem: instrument panel.

Digital dashboard problems this is my second lexus ls , and on both cars the dash lights have failed to work . This is a safety issue because you can not see how fast your are going, and if there is a problem with the srs or ant locking system the driver has no way of knowing there is a problem until it is to late.

'93 lexus ls400 instrument cluster does not illuminate until car is warm (30-60 minutes) unable to see how fast i am going.

Dash lights do not work when cold.

The contact owns a 1993 lexus ls400.the contact stated that the instrument cluster was vibrating and the gauges displayed inaccurate readings.the contact believed that it was a safety hazard.the vehicle was taken to a dealer and they stated that the cluster needed to be replaced.the contact replaced it approximately four years ago, but the failure still exists.the powertrain and purchase date were unknown.the current mileage was approximately 200,000 and failure mileage was 190,000.

1993 lexus ls 400- dash illumination fails, preventing driver from seeing speedometer, tachometer, gas gauge, engine warning lights and gear indicator.this is a very wide spread problem in this vehicle and a recall is required.

Lexus - 93 ls400 - dash cluster no longer shows speed, engine rpm, and fuel level. Ts

The instrument panel on my '93 ls 400 is not functioning properly.sometimes when it is cold it won't light up.in addition, the speedometer and the tachometer only work sporadically.i understand that this has been a problem with lexus vehicles for years and i want to lend my voice to the many who have already experienced this problem.this has to do with a design flaw in the manufacturing of this component and should be recalled.the dealer wants almost $2000 to repair a problem that should never exist.the worst part about that is that the new module will have the same design flaw that the old one has.even my '58 chevy had a speedometer that worked.i believe that lexus has taken a head in the sand attitude toward this problem and should be made accountable.

Instrument panel is unreadable--lighting is completely out.

Dashboard lights do not work until vehicle has bee driven for about 30 minutes.

The lights did not illuminate on the dashboard until the vehicle was warmed up for at least 30 minutes, and was unable to see the readings while driving at night.tsscc

I am experiencing major problems with the instrument cluster on my 1993 lexus ls400. Whenever the temperature drops below 70 degrees, the instrument panel goes completely out. The dash board panel fails to light up in the mornings when i start the car. I have to be driving for 45 min's to an hour before it starts flickering then eventually comes back on. If i turn on the a/c on re-circulating mode, it goes back off when ever the interior of the car gets cool. This is very frustrating since i am not able to tell what's going on with my car, no gas gauge, no temp gauge, no speedometer gauge, no tachometer no nothing. I checked with the dealer and they are telling me that i have to replace the entire dash unit at a cost plus labor totaling between $1500 - $2000. After checking with several other owners with the same type of vehicle, they to have the same problem. In my opinion this is a major defect in this vehicle and a very dangerous one. Lexus needs to recall this issue. Can you please help. I would appreciate any information you can provide to help resolve this problem. Please contact me by return email or give me a call at (973) 503-517to discuss this matter in more details.thank you.

To whom it may concern:i have a '93 lexus ls400. Apparently, 80% of these cars in this year have faulty instument panels. The speedometer and tach needles do not work, gas gauge is hardly responsive, and at night the lights fail to turn on leaving the driver in a dangerous situation. This of course is a safety issue and i believe is a direct result of a factory design flaw, which lexus should help resolve.the problem has been lingering for over 6 years now because lexus has quoted me at $1500 to replace the circuit board!!!! how can they get away with this??? maybe people need to die in car accidents for someone to take action and get these faulty parts recalled!!!!!! i refuse to spend hard earned money on this replacement. I have already gave lexus over $50,000 for the car and service.my opinion about lexus and its "persuit for perfection" has changed; they are just a bunch of thieves.if you search your records i am sure there is many complaints about this some issue. Thank you for your time.carlos.

I drove my car to work on thursday. After work while i was driving home, i smelled gas. When i got home the car was smoking underneath the hood. My son almost opened the hood to check the smoke; he burned his finger. A passerby told him not to open it because it was on fire. My son called 911. I don't know how or why the fire started, but it started underneath the hood. I have had this car for 5 years. I have never had any problems. Can you tell me if there are any recalls for the 93 lexus, ls 400. I noticed a recall for the 95, where a fire can start underneath the hood. Is my year fine. The car is totaled.

The instrument cluster in my '93 lexus ls400 goes dead intermittently. When this happens, every indicator stops working. I believe that this is a safety issue because the speedometer and fuel gauges do not operate. This has caused 2 close calls recently for my wife. She ran out of gas in heavy traffic once. She just got a speeding ticket this week for 45mph in a 35mph zone.ts

Instrument panel lights does not turn on in the morning, an it takes 30-45 min to flicker and light up.the cost to install at the lexus dealership for new motherboard and labor is ~$1,100.this should be a major recall item by lexus.i would like to know what other owners have done with similar complaints to mitigate this issue.*la

I have a 93 lexus ls400 with 76,000 miles.the white led speedometer pointer has burned out.the hendrick lexus service department said i would need a new speedometer cluster costing over $200 plus about $160 in labor.this seems terribly wrong to me.with the speedometer pointer burned out, it is impossible to determine the speed of the vehicle when driving at night.it is likewise very difficult to tell how fast you are driving during the day.

The vehicle speedometer light on the dashboard appear on and off intermittenly without prior. Please fill in additional information dealer is aware of the problem. Ts

The instrument panel was inoperative.the vehicle had taken 30 minutes of warming before the panel turned on and the consumer found that this was a common problem with the 93 and 94 model ls 400's.*scc

My complaint is about the lexus autos that i own and owned in the past. It involves the gas cylinder that holds the hood up. After a few years the gas leaks out making the hood a hazard by coming down on your head unexpectedly. If it is a warm day, it stays up a little longer than a cold day. I have to use a paper clamp to hold the hood up. I took this problem up with the lexus company with no interest. So i am taking it up with you people. Why don't they use springs like the older cars use.they never come down unexpectedly.

Dt*: the contact stated the brackets used to hold the hood open failed to keep pressure and allowed the hood to close without warning.the manufacturer was notified.

Vehicle experieced problem with trunk leaking.appointment being made to the dealer. Seeking help from nhtsa in this matter.

I bought a car from lexus dealership on june 26, less than 3 month ago. It is a 1993 lexus ls400 with 67400 miles on odometer at the time of purchase. Last sunday my family: my wife, daughter and myself went for a 4 day vacation to lake shasta. It was our first long trip in lexus. Until then there were only up to 50 miles trips. After about two hours of driving at 65-70 miles per hour something happened. We heard something fell out from the car and i barely had the car under control. When i stopped the car we saw that the tread of left rear tie is destroyed/missing. Some other parts including left rear door are damaged/missing. I suppose it happened because the radius of the tire increased without the tread. When we drove back september 13 the same happened with the right rear tire. Again, after 2 hours of driving at 65-70 miles per our we heard a part felling out. The tread of right rear tire was destroyed. Some other parts were missing/damaged/scratched. Both tires were installed when i bought the car. They are the same make: cooper lifeliner classic ii.( dot number: tire size: p225/60r16 )

Consumer states she experienced a flat tire, she took tire back to where it was purchased and the store repaired it, consumer took vehicle into local dealership and was then advised that the tread was worn, consumer was also experiencing continual air loss, when consumer replaced the tires she was advised that the tires she had were high performance tires for racing situations only not for normal driving.

The instrument panel appear dark intil the vehicle warm up.causing theconsumerunable to see. Please furnish additional information, dealer is aware of the problem. Ph

The speedometer and odometer needles on my dashboard work only intermittently.they are usually stuck at "0," but sporadically jump to life on occasion and work for short periods of time.very frustrating.the car is a 1993 lexus ls400.*la

The contact owned a 1993 lexus ls400. While driving at a low rate of speed, the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed when the brake pedal was depressed. As a result, the vehicle drove over a curb and crashed up a slope near a wooded area. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. In addition, there was an abnormal noise heard near the engine compartment and front end of the vehicle as the vehicle surged at an extremely high rate of speed. The failure was reported to the insurance company and the manufacturer. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a collision center. The contact was waiting on a response from the manufacturer regarding the unintended acceleration failure. The approximate failure mileage was 201,600.

Car was in a parking lot. Started, put in reverse, then put in drive and car took off steered to the right and hittwo other parked cars before i got car in neutral.motor still reving till ignition turned off.car only travelled about 25 yards butwas literally uncontrollable from an accelerator or throttle standpoint--felt like it was in a full open position--it all happened so fast--hardly any time to react, luckily no injuries.was witnessed.
