1. While pulling into a parking space, at 2-4 mph, with my foot on the brake, the car suddenly accelerated at full speed, jumping the curb and hitting a tree with full force.because of previous concerns with throttle problems noted with the dealership at 1000 and 5000 mile check, i immediately called the lexus dealership.after a conference call with lexus roadside assistance and the dealership, my car was flat bedded to the dealership.the frontal crash rendered the vehicle un-drivable.radiator damage with leakage of fluid covered a portion of the parking lot.the lexus dealership said they was no problem with the car. I could have been killed or somebody else live could have been in danger. 2.the front air bags did not inflate.3.the brake rotors had to be corrected at 1500 miles and a "part" was ordered and put on the care to correct this problem.4.the car when driving at above 50 pulls to the left and from the beginning it felt as though the car was uneven even when not moving.at that time i requested a written explanation of this problem and told my record at the dealership would substantiate this.on the night of the accident i learnedby reviewing complaints from the office of defect investigations on the nhtsa web site that the problems havebeen known by the corporate office of lexus from as early as january, 2002 in regards to all of the above problems.i also found out there have been two recalls on this vehicle that i was not informed about.i will be requesting an investigation with the lexus east regional office and discussing this with the rockville lexus office.i believe that this car is unsafe to drive.i brought the lexus vehicle even with it's price tag because of its reputation and to drive my 3 year old grandson and 1 year old granddaughter in the safest manner i could facilitate.i am sure that my son and daughter-in-law will not allow this after this crash!!!! updated 7/3/12

When pulling into a parking space traveling at less then 10 miles per hour, the car suddenly accelerated, proceeded forward hitting another parked car head on.the vehicle then jumped a curb and hit a second car.when attempting to stop the car using the brakes, the brake pedal was depressed but the car did not stop.in addition the air bag failed to deploy. Significant damage was done to two other vehicles beside mine. Updated 7/3/12

Non deployal of side airbags on lexus es 300. Model year 2002. My son was hit square in the drivers door and incurred significant damage to the vehicle. The oncoming vehicle that hit him had its airbags fully deploy. The side curtain airbags in my 2002 es 300 should have deployed and failed to do so. There was approximately $8000 worth of damage to the vehicle. The whole of the drivers side was completely smashed. Neither, the police nor the body shop that repaired the car could not offer an explanationas to the failure of the airbags to deploy.

Lexus es 300 year 2002,i was pulling into a parking space, traveling at slow speed, 5-8 miles an hour, when the car would not stop, despite applying the brake.the car engine appeared to have a low hum and appeared to be in overdrive. The car jumped over a concrete divider, over a sidewalk, through a brick wall and plate glass window. The car was in a furniture store. The front of the car was extensively damaged.i ( the driver) hit my head ( left side) and the left side of my body hit the side of the car.the accident was reported to lexus.they had access to evaluate the car and said that the brakes were fine. This type of accident has happened to other drivers of this make and year of car.i hope it will be evaluated carefully.i have suffered as a result of this accident.just because lexus could not find a problem , does not mean that it does not exist.articles have been written about sudden acceleration occurring in2002 lexus es 300 autos.

While applying the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. Consumer tried numerous times and suddenly the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably. Theconsumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and drove it to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic determined thatcomputer needed to be reprogrammed.however, the problem recurred.*tc

The instruments cannot be seen if there is any light coming into the car.the red pointers cannot be seen.this has been a problem since i bought the car.i see that it has been known since 2002 but nothing has been done to fix it.i wonder just why??i don't like not being able to know just how fast i am going, fuel quantity etc!!

The car stalls and pauses in traffic.the car has rough vibration when the gears shift.the dealer said the computer was designed to operate in that manner and that there is presently no correction for the problem.the dealer acknowledged the problem, but refuses to replace the car or to buy me out because this problem has not resulted in any fatalities.

When drivingat a low speed, the vehicle surged forward.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection on five separate occasions, but the problem continued the dealer acknowledged the situation but did not know how to fix it.there was excessive belt squealing in the morning, the brake pedal pulsated and the key would no turn in the ignition. *sc

Instrument cluster gauges have red needles against a black background which are difficult to see in daylight conditions, especially in full sunlight and are impossibe to see wearing sun glasses. This, in my opinion, constitutes a safety hazard, being unable to read the gages, especially the speed.

Optitron instrumentation: not easy to read in broad daylight. When driving, it's important to keep your eyes on the road. Under normal daylight conditions, instrument readings are virtually invisible. Current speed necessary to set cruise control. Poor design: at night, or under low ambient light conditions (dusk, heavy shade, rain, etc.) instrument lighting is exceptional: all elements of the instrument cluster are very clear, very visible.under normal daylight conditions (with sun overhead - not shining directly on the panel) the illumination level within the cluster is insufficient to provide easy visibility. (staring intently will yield results - a definite safety issue in a moving vehicle.) in order to set the cruise control, it is necessary to know exactly what speed the vehicle is at: very difficult to see in broad daylight. (the maufacturer advertises their optitron instrumentation as "illuminated for faster and easier reading".)

Instrument gauge indicators are unable to read while driving during day light hours. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

In certain light conditions instrument panel gauges are impossible to see.

Lights to read speed odometer and gas, are hard to read, causing consumer to only see indark areas, and not during day time.

Light ondashboard panel, and cannot seereading of speed.control panel will not set becausespeed reading cannot be readduethe light.

I replaced the battery on my lexus and it would no longer idleyou take your foot off the accelerator and the engine dies.. The computer lost the idle parametersthis is dangerous as i turned left off one road to another took myfoot from accelarator to brake engine died and i lost power steering almost wreckedmost mechanics are aware of this defectlexus refused to admit itgoogle it all over internet

The contact owns a 2002 lexus es300. While driving 30 mph, there were flames and a black substance coming from the engine compartment of the vehicle. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to an auto body repair center, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000. The vin was unavailable.

Large cloud of white/gray smoke when car sits overnight from previous night driving. After researching online this seems to be a common problem. There was a lawsuit filed because of this.why not a recall????

Dealer and finance company claim clean title but documents reflect otherwise.

On 1/8/15 at approx. 9:30 am,i was driving to work south on hwy 95 near exit 67 . Suddenly, other drivers were frantically waving at me to pull over onto the shoulder of the highway. What they saw ( and which i couldn't), was that there were flames under my car. I pulled over and got out of the car. Within seconds ( not even a full minute), the entire car was engulfed in flames and soon became a complete and total charred mess. Fortunately, i was not physically hurt and a maryland state trooper came onto the scene 2-5 minutes after i got out of the car. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

In day light hours when sun is out consumer can't see dials on speedometer, unable to tell how fast vehicle was going.consumer felt this was very unsafe. Consumer also can not see the fuel gauge, engine speed and engine temperature.

I have a 2002 lexus es300. It stopped while driving recently. There was no indication. The engine was running but the car was not moving. After opening the hood i found the small pipe connecting the air intake to the engine had come off. I was lucky as the driver behind me slowed down and stopped. However if this had happened on a highway, i possible would not be writing this complaint.

Check engine light came on and car acceleration was limited.error codes p2121 and p2128 indicated faulty "throttle position sensor"the part retails for around $100. Lexus insisted that i had to replace the complete accelerator pedal assembly with a new throttle position sensor. Lexus charged me $764 to replace both assemblies. I believe lexus should have covered the cost of all of the cost of replacing the accelerator pedal assembly. My vehicle is a 2002 lexus es300.

I was stopped at a red light approximately 3-4 ft. Behind a utility truck. Suddenly the car surged forward and hit the rear end of the truck in front of me.

The contact owns a 2002 lexus es300.while driving 25 mph, the vehicle hesitated and the contact smelled fuel.he pulled the vehicle over and noticed smoked under the hood.in a matter of seconds, flames appeared.the vehicle was destroyed.the palm beach county police department filed report number 09-092367 and fire report number 09-50737.there were no injuries.the manufacturer will be notified.the current and failure mileages were 44,000.

I recently purchased a 2002 lexus es 300 and not much to complain about the inside etc. The acceleration and throttle though are a major problem. I almost got into a car accident getting onto 95 trying to pass a semi because the accelerator " pauses" when i step on the gas pedal. After the pause it starts to accelerate so i barely made it without hitting the semi. This really concerns me and want lexus to do something about it. Its just plain unsafe.

Upon acceleration in stop-and-go traffic, severe hesitation with brake-like effect, engine reviving, with driver thrown forward, then lurching into gear.said was fixed with installation of tsib tc004-3.narrowly being missed by oncoming traffic when car basically stalled.tsib not a fix.now engine light on.dangerous in stop-and-go traffic.

My 2002 lexus es 300, when driven at highway speed at night time, the headlights (hid's) keep coming closer and closer to the vehicle. After about one hour of driving the distance covered by the light is about half the length of a semitruck trailer. It is very hard to drive on corners on the freeway and i have to turn the high beam on. The other way to describe the distance covered by the light is to tell that i can see only two dotted points (the divider line on the freeway) at any given point in time. My estimation is that the distance covered by the light at that time is about 15-20 feet at the max. The light gets so concentrated close to the car that if i turn the foglights on (which fall very close to the car) i can't even see any difference in the light intesity. Once i hit the brakes of the car, the headlights go back to normal for a few miles and the distance covered is definitely more than 100 feet. I did take my car to lexus dealership which is about 250 miles from my house twice, only to hear that this car has a special sensor which adjusts the distance covered by the light and all the sensors are working correctly. They say they can't test drive my car at night time as their dealership is closed and there is no way that they can confirm my complaint. I am afraid to drive this car at night because the distance covered by these so called special lights is very dangerous and the only option for me at that time is to turn the high beam on which is again not safe for the other traffic around. I am putting the incident date as aug, 2003 as i bought the car sometimes at that time and this complaint happens everytime i go for a freeway driving at nightime. Please help me deal with this matter and oblige.

The contact owns a 2002 lexus es300. While driving various speeds the contact noticed that the turn signal volume was very low and could not be heard when it was activated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the vehicle could not be serviced for the failure. The contact had experienced the failure since the vehicle was purchased. The failure mileage was 3000 and the current mileage was 82000.

On june 15, 2009 we were driving home and my husband felt the car almost stalled.then we smelled gasoline and saw smoke coming from the bottom right under the engine.we exited the car and it was already on fire.the car burst into flames and was completely destroyed.it was a 2002 lexus 300es with only 44,000 miles.toyota has been extremely rude to us and took almost a month to inspect the car.they say they cannot determine the cause of the fire.how can a car start on fire while you are driving it over straight roads.? we never had an accident or any other problem.i read of a couple of other lexuses that caught fire.something should be done to make toyota fully examine this problem.

I was driving my 2002 lexus e300 on rte95 in providence r.i. I was in the middle lane travelingat the speed of the traffic--65mph. Suddenly t check engine warning light came on and without warning when i stepped onthe gas pedal there was no response. I was in the midst of heavy traffic losing speed rapidly. Fortunately i was able to coast to the edge of the road . The chip which feeds gas to the engine failed.

Gas cap is very hard to twist off. Consumer developed a sprang wrist trying to twist is off.spring clip causes it to lock up.

Upon purchasing vehicle there was a design defect in fuel tank. Cannot get gas cap off vehicle to put gasoline in it. Contacted the dealer. Consumer states the filler cap was replaced with a new version but it required a tool to remove it and did not solve the problem.

In day light hours when sun is out consumer can't see dials on speedometer, unable to tell how fast vehicle was going.consumer felt this was very unsafe. Consumer also can not see the fuel gauge, engine speed and engine temperature.

Several times when i accelerate from a stop sign...car surges.

While driving on a freeway the car made a sudden & brief shutter immediately followed by loss of response by the accelerator pedal.i immediately began to move off the freeway knowing that something was wrong with my car. Upon getting o the off ramp i saw flames coming from around the front left tire. I put the car into park, turned the engine off and exited the vehicle. Within a very few minutes the car was completely engulfed in flames. Passers by who stopped to assist me indicated that they saw flames underneath the car as i was pulling off the freeway. There was no indication of fire (either flames, smoke or gauge indications) for me s the driver until i had exited to the off ramp. The car has been deemed a total loss with cause listed as " undetermined" by the insurance co.

On a sunny day and while in motion, consumer states the dashboard cannot be read, even with sunshades on. Dealer has been notified. Ts*jg

The consumer states that he cannot view the instrument panel during the daytime.the mfr advised the consumer that the panel is designed that way.*mrthe consumer states that the white numbers on the instruments were okay, but it is extremely difficult to see the red needle during the day light (unless your in the shade/or in the evening).the consumer states that he is unable to tell the speed of travel, whether the engine is overheating, and/or the amount of fuel left.also the multi-information displays and the odometer readings are barely visible during the daylight hours.the consumer states that he receives a standard answer that the instrument panel is working as designed. *scc

My 2002 lexus es300 has been jerking and shifting very hard on acceleration.it seems to have more of a problem when i accelerate slowly in the lower gears.it jerks very noticeably.i was told it was just the nature of the car, but it has been getting much worse over the course of the last year.it also hesitates when stepping on the gas after deceleration.

2002 lexus es300 has a lag in time between stepping on the gas and the transmission responding to put the car in motion.*mrthe hesitation is most pronounced when braking and then needing to rapidly accelerate.the consumer feels the inability of the vehicle to respond in a timely manner is hazardous.the manufacturer was contacted.

Can't read speedometer in bright daylight with headlights on and driver wearing sun glasses.

On 11/20/09, i was parked in front of my house in my 2002 lexus es300.when i put the car in drive, it boomed forth, and the brake didn't work.i tried to get around the car that was parked in front of me but the speed was such that i hit it. There was damage to my car and the car i hit. The driver was in the car and has since claimed she was injured. I had another instance of unintended acceleration 2 years prior to this incident but was able to stop.i urge you to push toyota to admit that there are cases of unintended acceleration in models that pre-date the ones they are recalling and to rectify the problem.

In day light hours when sun is out consumer can't see dials on speedometer, unable to tell how fast vehicle was going.consumer felt this was very unsafe. Consumer also can not see the fuel gauge, engine speed and engine temperature.

When the transmission shifts between first and second gears at a slow steady speed(approx 20mph) the car will frequently violently jerk.my car has 75000 miles and has done it since day one.

Cannot see speed reading on dashboard in sunlight.dealership is aware ofproblem.the consumer also states that the change of instruments did not correct the problem.the service department said that this model has the same lighting.right front door hard to close due to being misaligned, dealer adjusted door striker, speedometer needles difficult to see.*scc

While driving when sun is shining consumer is unable to read speed odometer due to poor design, black back round with white numbers and a black needle. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further information.

Very difficult to see speedomoter - dark background with dark needle requires too much time to see speed.

Transmission gets confused when shifting into and out of the lower gears, then spends too long trying to figure out what gear to be in. This causes dangerous delays in acceleration, the effect is the same as a momentary engine stall. We have had this happen on several occasions, freeway ramp entrances are certainly the most dangerous place that this has occurred. Dealer acknowledges that there have been complaints about the shifting delays but they say no fix is available. This is our third es300, the previous models used a cable between the gas pedal and the throttle, this new one uses what is called "fly by wire", a position sensor on the accelarator that a computer is supposed to use to figure out what to tell the engine and transmission.it isn't working very well.if not rectified this problem will certainly lead to a crash someday, then we'll get to see how good the safety equipment is.

Dangerous hesitation in the transmission when stepping on the gas after decelerating.nearly caused an accident.lexus has tried 2 times to fix and nothing has helped.

Rough shifting/slipping in lower gears (1,2). When accelerating in stop and go traffic car seems to stall before it suddenly bumps into gear. Intermittently - when accelerated suddenly (moving steady at about 10 miles per hour) transsmision slipped out of gear, engine rpm reached about 4000 rpm. It engaged in gear after i released accelerator.

When accelerating or deceleratingvehicle shifted violently. Dealer stated they knew about the problem, but could not find a solution at this time.

2003 lexus hesitates on acceleration when slowing ( e.g., making a turn) and then proceeding to full speed. The manufacturer was aware of the problem in press reviews on release of the car, and took 2 years to provide a software patch that was alleged to have corrected the problem. The patch does not work, and the condition is a safety problem.

Power train: automatic transmission.vehicle speed control: accelerator pedal. Ar hesitates on acceleration, lunges at times, searches for proper gear and shifts hard.the heistation can be quite dramatic; enough to lose confidence in critical situations.the car has been "re-programmed" by lexus, but problems continue.lexus denies there is a problem and says the car functions as designed.problems surfaced shortly after purchase and continue.

The transmission had a jerk in the transmission, the dealer told the consumer it was the design the of the vehicle.

Car accelerates when not appropriate and shifts very poorly especially when the air conditioning is on. Seems to be stuck in gear when trying to accelerate to pass another vehicle.hesitation.bucks and shifts really hard intermittently.

Shift comfort issue exists at somewhat predictable driving conditions that cause the driver to handle the car in a cautious manner to avoid vehicle malfunction.dt

I own a 2002 lexus es300, and the car is dangerous! i've taken it to the dealer many times to have the transmission checked out, because it hesitates in traffic when you press the gas.they just say some babble about the "transmission just needs to get used to the driver", im sorry but just because we can afford an expensive car doesnt mean that we're stupid. This is my wife's car, and i really don't think there needs to be any injuries or fatalities to have something done about this wide spread problem.

1) stumble - this occurs when you quickly accelerate and the car hesitates for 1-2 seconds before it kicks in. 2) shudder - with no pattern, the car will suddenly shudder. This occurs with no/little acceleration.3) surging - the car surges approx. 1/2 foot when the air conditioner is on. I have noticed that this problem is intensified when the car is slowly (e.g., in traffic) moving down hill.

When the accelerator is pressed for the purpose of passing or for merging into traffic at varying speeds between 25-50 mph, the vehicle "lags" or encounters a dead spot before responding (by suddenly speeding off).the vehicle seems to be attempting to decide how to respond to the action of the accelerator being pressed (whether to remain in the current gear, or down-shift for quick acceleration).the 'rpms' will rise extremely high, before the transmission figures out what gear to shift into in order to comply with the request of the driver's action.this 'lag period' is an extremely dangerous time for the vehicle's occupants as the vehicle does not respond like normal vehicles confronted with a "wide-open-throttle" request do.if my wife, who is no "car buff" and generally does not pay attention toanything but starting the vehicle, has also brought this issue to my attention, then i know there is definitely a problem.as the problem presents itself as a serious safety issue for my family, i have contacted lexus customer service who have advised me that "lexus is attempting to develop a fix for the concern that many of our customers have brought to our attention". I have been waiting for this "fix" for over 7 months now, and the expected date keeps being pushed back!please take some action regarding this serious issue, as there are many other lexus owners who were in the "passionate pursuit of perfection" (lexus slogan), but have not taken the time to file a complaint!!

The 2002 lexus es300 has a significant flaw in the new electronically controlled transmission system.this flaw has been recognized by multiple dealerships and by lexus customer service.i have been waiting for a resolution to this problem since december 2002 which is shortly after i purchased the vehicle.there are three very obvious symptoms that have been occurring ever since i purchased the vehicle.depending upon fuel and driving conditions, the car will develop a neck jerking shutter as it violently shifts between gears.this usually occurs anywhere between 40 and 50 mph, but most often when you are trying to maintain a constant speed.the second condition occurs when you go from a slowing situation into an acceleration situation.during this time, the car often goes into a neutral condition and takes a couple seconds before power is returned to the wheels.this condition is very dangerous when moving into traffic or turning a corner.when turning, you will nearly coast around the corner until the power is returned to the wheels.when the power is returned, it is very abrupt and lunges the car forward.the third condition occurs during full throttle acceleration.this is most evident when accelerating onto a highway.the car seems to shift into a very low gear where rpm is nearly red-line and power is almost non-existent.the car then jerks into a different gear where you may get more power, but it doesn't usually stay in that gear either.it then shifts back to the low gear, red-lines again and repeats the process.this will often occur 2 or 3 times before a good gear is found and you can then proceed with normal driving.at this point, lexus did make a couple lease payments for me in exchange for waiting a few more months for the fix.unfortunately, that was nearly a year ago and i'm still waiting.we need to get this fixed before someone gets injured, not after! *nlm

Dangerous condition exists with 2002 lexus es300, where a severe hesitation exists when accelerating at slow roll (< 5mph) at intersection turns, exiting driveways, and generally anywhere when trying to get into flow of traffic when nearly stopped - especially when a turn is involved along with the acceleration. Very dangerous condition exists when trying to enter lane, or make a turn, in front of fast-moving traffic. It seems the car's electronics does not regognize the accelerator's request for fuel under those conditions. This is exactly what complaint /case #100375515 listed and i have the exact same problems.i have taken it back to the dealer twice and another one sheduled for 5/21/2004.

Transmission is unreliable.since march 2003, when accelerating the transmission slips. Updated 7/2/12

I present this as information to complement the present issues with toyota motor company and its institutional failure to respond to safety related incidents.i owned a 2002 lexus es300.the mechanical/computer problem with this car involved the failure of the transmission to downshift effectively when merging into traffic at 40-50 mph. This issue was first observed when i attempted to merge into the freeway in front of a fast moving truck.the transmission downshifted but did not engage in 3rd gear, but simply disengaged the engine from the wheels; the engine rpms increased, the tachometer went to the red line and the computer shut off fuel to the engine.thus the car decelerated in front of the truck.this was easily replicated, and many similar stories filled the auto chat rooms at that time. Lexus response at the dealer level: " you use the wrong fuel; you have driven incorrectly and programmed the computer to respond this way; this is the only car behaving like this"the shop foreman drove with me, observed the problem and wrote an incident report to toyota.i demonstrated the effect on a new lexus with the service manager, who still was not able to admit that a serious problem existed.lexus response at the national level: "no problems have been reported on a problem you describe."finally a service rep showed me a print out from national lexus service, "tell the customers that the transmission is behaving the way that it was designed! "of course, it was incorrectly designed and it behaved that way.after two years, a partial computer upgrade was sent to the dealers and installed. Mine was the second car with the fix, the lexus dealership owner was the first.my point is that the toyota/lexus corporate response to safety issues at the national level has been to stonewall and deny the existence of problems even when they could produce potential catastrophic results. This historical policy of denial existed long before the present issues gained notoriety.

My 2002 lexus es 200 was dying or not starting at all.suddenly, it was working fine.2 days later, while idling or when my foot was on the brake, it would lurch forward and start accelerating at sometimes 40mph.i had to slam on the brakes, then emergency brake to stop, then after i turned it off, it would shake forward.

Car won't go into gear properly during stop-and-go traffic or pull out into traffic while turning a corner, resulting in unsafe situations as noted by other cars' horns honking and brakesbeing applied . Dealer says it performs as designed by factory, and there is no way to fix it.

Brake rotors were replaced, entire new brake kit installed and all four tire were replaced prior to reaching 20k miles.*phthe consumer has not been pleased with the shifting performance of the vehicle.the automatic transmission demonstrate erratic, rough and inconsistent shifting.the manufacturer installed a software upgrade but it only slightly improved the performance.the consumer also had a 2000 lexus gs 300 which had a more dramatic transmission problem.the local dealer insisted that nothing was wrong with the vehicle.

Lexus (2002 es) has dramatic transmission stutter at low or high speeds, jerking occupants and making quick starts (turning across lanes) very dangerous.

When accelerating in my 2002 lexus es300, i experience hesitation of a few seconds before the vehicle begins to increase in speed.this did not seem to be a problem when i first got the vehicle, but over time has become extremely noticeable and dangerous since i drive on the major highways in the washington, dc area.when it was reported to my dealer a few months ago they explained it away and took no action.

Lexus 2002 es 300 82,000 miles transmission went completely out with no warning and was serviced on 02/28/2007 with 58995 miles as an oil change attendant notified my that my transmission fluid looked completely worn out.my starter was replaced by lexus of tulsa on 01/29/2008 the service manager said he had never seen one completely worn out as this with so few miles.i wonder if i have a lemon.lexus of tulsa has quoted a transmission replacement of 4200-4600 dollars this is unacceptable.my wife and i have a new baby at home and this is our only car that the baby's car seat can travel in.we need help.

We have an escalating shudder when down shifting the transmission. The dealer acknowledged that they have a problem with software between the engine and the powertrain/transmission. They do not have a fix and are asking customers to drive the vehicle for another possible 45 to 60 days until the fix is issued. We have requested another car since this is our 4th es400 in the past ten years and the 97 lexus we traded was in perfect condition. We are not willing to wait for a repair and have notified the company that they need to resolve our problem caused by their defective product with a new vehicle.

I have experienced significant delay in downshifting when attempting to merge with traffic in my 2002 lexus es300.following the delay, the transmission shifts to the top of the rpm range effectively resulting in no acceleration, then it up shifts to an appropriate gear.this is a dangerous condition. I have had several near misses from being rear ended as a result. The dealer has duplicated this problem on other 2002's and lexus in california admits there is a problem but has no fix. I have been told for almost a year now that a fix is coming but still no fix. I hope someone does not get killed from this defect before it gets fixed!please do something. *nlm

My 2002 lexus 300 has a dangerous and significant hesitation and shifting problem. Acceleration is sluggish and then surges forward suddenly causing the vehicle to move forward unexpectedly. In addition, there is a repeated shifting problem at low speeds wherein the vehicle continuously shifts in and out of overdrive, again with unexpected and uncontrollable results. The dealer indicated this was the way these cars were engineered and did an firmware upgrade. However, the problem persists in much the same way.

While driving at 20mph and with no warningmaking a turn andvehicle will stall.it will be hard forconsumer to controlvehicle. Dealer notified.

1. Shuddering transmission in stop/go traffic. 2. When at a complete stop, car nudges forwardeven when brakes are fully depressed.notified dealer as well as lexus corp and was told no fix is available at this time.

Car has very poor shifting characteristics.it is always annoying and sometimes unsafe.twice i have started to quickly accelerate from a stop to turn left and had the transmission start to downshift then wait through a delay as if the software was confused.the result was the car sitting in the intersection with the accelerator depressed but no power to the wheels for around 1 or 2 seconds.dealer acknowledges "shifting comfort" issues are the number one complaint for the car but says no fix is available.i have been in discussions with the service manager on this issue for over 8 months and have had no help.

My 2002 lexus es300 has had continual transmission and shifting problems.we took it in for the update but that did not fix the problem.when i asked again i was told i already had the update and there was nothing else that could be done.i believe lexus needs to take responsibility and fix this issue.often times i will press the gas pedal to quickly get out of the way and the delay is not only annoying, it's dangerous.

Lack of response between the transmission and the engine.*mrthe consume explained that there is a lag time between stepping on the gas an the transmission responding.this hesitation was most pronounced when braking and then needing to rapidly accelerate, such as when merging into traffic.the consumer feels the vehicle inability to respond in a timely manner is a hazard.the consumer contacted the manufacturer who indicated that he vehicle was performing with in their specifications.the problem is so bad that the consumer intends to get rid of the vehicle.

I have a 2002 lexus es300.my car at slower speeds has been jerking/surging at lower speeds and lurches forward without notice.it is a nightmare to drive this car in traffic.i keep being told its normal, it seems hundreds of others have complained, but i'm not getting anywhere.the lexus dealership did a software upgrade recently, it only made the matter worse.i hate driving this car, everyone in my family avoids driving it, as we just don't feel comfortable in the way it accelerates and shifts gears.its a 2002 model, with 49k miles.i avg 25k miles a year driving, do the math, this car sucks, and i avoid using it out of fear/annoyance.

While driving at any speed, transmission slipped while shifting fromthird to fourthgear.also, there wa s hesitation, and the rpms went way up. Dealership replaceda chip and calibrated thetransmission, and problem recurred.

The flaws and failures of the transmission in my 2002 lexus es300 were noticeable within 500 miles of driving the new car off the lot. I now have 47,000 miles on the car and lexus has performed re-programming of the transmission logic. However, that has not helped. It seems that as i drive more mileage the problem of the transmission not knowing what gear to be in is becoming worse. The resulting hesitation is dangerous for the driver and occupants of my car as it results in close-calls with other vehicles hitting me from behind during hesitation.

2002 lexus es300 had a major surging problem at approximately 40 mph.after a year of promises, lexus came out with a computer upgrade that changed the problem from annoying to dangerous.the 1/2 and 2/3 shifts are wildly inconsistent, sometimes taking 2/3 seconds and feeling like a slipping transmission. When acceleration, as in a passing or avoidance situation, is called for the motor revs up and the car goes nowhere while the transmission searches for a gear. This can take 3/4 seconds and has already almost caused a accident.lexus customer service says the car is performing as designed and no further modifications are planned.*la

Dangerous condition exists with 2002 lexus es300, where a severe hesitation exists when accelerating at slow roll (< 5mph) at intersection turns, exiting driveways, and generally anywhere when trying to get into flow of traffic when nearly stopped - especially when a turn is involved along with the acceleration.very dangerous condition exists when trying to enter lane, or make a turn, in front of fast-moving traffic. It seems the car's electronics does not regognize the accelerator's request for fuel under those conditions.a prior lexus tsb addressed transmission shifting at higher speeds, but seems to have created a new, and potentially more dangerous condition.

2002 lexus es300 exhibits most of the pecularities mentioned in pe 04021 and dp 04003 in addition to inconsistent 1/2 and 2/3 shifts and major lag time in downshifts at speed.a major defect that has caused numerous near misses.

I have a 2002 lexus es300.if you stomp on the gas while driving in order to merge or pass the engin reves but the car does not pick up speed i.e there is a big dead spot.i took it to the dealor and was told that was how the care was designed to work.i feel that the hesitation is a big safty problem thatcould lead to a accident.what can be done to get lexus to fix this problem?

2002 lexus es300, car lunges and jerks during acceleration and deceleration.car drove fine until lexus upgraded software, and then 100% noticeable difference in performance.car was brought to jm lexus approx 4-5 times for problem, and once to palm beach lexus.car jerked during test drive with mechanic.i was told it was a "characteristic" of the car, and there was nothing that can be done to fix it.mechanic stated he has seen the same problem on other cars.problem has been getting worse.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 155,000. I had just left my doctor's office and gone to a parking structure where i had parked my car for the visit.i paid the parking charge, got back my validated ticket, and inserted the ticket in the gate-arm machine.the gate lifted, and i put my foot lightly on the accelerator to exit from the parking structure into the street.the car then picked up speed, well past what it should have picked up based on the light pressure i had put on the accelerator, and the brakes had no effect.the car went faster and faster, crossed a street, and crashed into a concrete wall.on impact, the airbags were deployed.i suffered serious back pain, and my wife was in the hospital for three nights with two broken ribs.the car was totaled.

During the initial warranty 50k miles, the dealership has resurfaced and replaced the rotors 4 timeson my 2002 es 300 lexus and now the rotors are warped for the fifth time. The problem is when braking, there is a very noticable vibration in the wheels, which if not repaired could cause a major accident and cause injury and even be fatal to me or others. When i brought this to the attention of lexus customer satisfaction, they responded with, they would replace the rotors free of charge, but i would have to pay for replacing brake pads and labor, $300. They said the problem is attributed to my braking practices, driving in the city and the mileage on my vehicle. I do not believe one word of that, something other than the way i brake (which is no different than a million other drivers) is causing this problem. I believe either they haven't been replacing the rotors as they stated or somethingis causing the rotors to warp, which could be a defect. At 67,533 miles, which is when i last took my vehicle in for the fifth time for vibrating, i would be servicing the rotors on an average of every 13,506 miles.this has nothing to do with my braking practices. This is also a safety hazard for other drivers and myself. I don't want them to just repair the symptom i want the cause to be repaired. I was told before i complained, that the repair would cost between $600 and $700. Can you imagine how much this would cost me for rotors for the life of this vehicle!after i receivedlexus's decision from mr. Dan reynolds, i asked him for the name of the person next in line for me to appeal this decision. He told me he was it. There was no one else to appeal to. He said he had offered me a good will effort, and nothing else would be done. Please investigate the history of the2002 es300 and see how many vehicles have needed resurfaced/replaced rotors 5 times at 67,533 miles.i appreciate your attention given to my situation. Thank you.

*sc

Sudden unintended acceleration of 2002 lexus es 300 . While pulling into a parking space the car engine revved higher and car jumped forward. My foot was already on the brake so i pressed brake all the way down. The car stopped but the engine kept revving at just over 3000rpm. I put car in neutral and engine remained at just over 3000rpm. I then put car in park and engine rpm shot to over 6000 at which i immediately tuned key to off. I never took foot off brake during this time. I then turned car back on and everything was back to normal. This has never happened before and we have had the car since new from dealer.

In august i went to park my car (2002 es300) in my driveway when all of a sudden it picked up speed, crashing through my brand new fence and side porch. It must be noted that i had my foot on the brake, the car was stopped and all of a sudden it took off on me. My foot never moved off the brake the whole time; the car came to a stop when it hit the porch. The day before i was driving with my mom and as i started to slow the car down b/c i was coming to a stop signthe car all of a sudden picked up speed, but thankfully at that time i had time to press the brakes down harder and stop the car. When i park my car in the driveway it is only a couple of inches from the gate and from the gate it is about 2-3 feet to the porch so there was no way to avoid this accident.when lexus inspected the car they found nothing wrong with the dbw (electronic throttle control). I find this to be a coverup of some sorts b/c i've been driving for years and never had this happen to me before. I know first hand that is is not a driver error it is a manufactor's defect. I know it went into investigations and they are not recalling the cars b/c there was not enough evidence that this really happens. Since i've been bringing this issue to light i recently found out that the same thing happened to my husband's friend's wife last year. Her car took off on her and went through her garage. This is very dangerous and i do not feel safe driving my car. I feel that lexus is really in a position where they don't have to do anything because the nhtsa deemed there was nothing wrong with the car causing the unintended acceleration. Both the dealership and manufacturer did not want to take any responsiblity what so ever for this incident.they were very helpful when i purchased the car but wiped there hands of any problems with the vehicle.

Fortunately i was able to coast to the edge of the road . The chip which feeds gas to the engine failed.

Sudden acceleration from a stop in a line of traffic resulted in collision with vehicle in front. Vehicle was 2002 lexus es 300. Several prior sudden acceleration events had previously occurred. Contact with lexus dealer resulted in no assistance.

I experienced the problem after my 90,000 scheduled major maintenance.on 11/22/09, i returnedto my car and found the windows and sun roof were opened.i had not engaged the remote to do this. I got in the car and closed the windows and sun roof.i drove approx one and a half miles.i slowed the car to prepare to park.i turned into the parking space and noticed that the car was not stopping. I pressed on the brake and the car suddenly surged forward crossing over a curb and striking a parked car.while at the body shop a lexus technition went in to check the car and said he found everything to be within specifications.previously reported by phone but the account was not complete.

I owned a 2002 lexus es 300 which in january 2010 before the craze of the acceleration became popular, it took off, without provocation, shift locked, acceleration locked, and brakes didn't work.i filed a bbb.org complaint, i faxed, emailed, facebooked, and twittered toyota lexus concerning my concerns, and the fact that as a disabled vet, who spent his entire earnings on a car for his family, and that vehicle crashed without provocation, and asked for their help.they never answered the bbb complaints with the usa location or north american, from facebook, they said to contact the customer satisfaction department, which i did.when contacting the customer satisfaction department, their jobs are to attempt to talk fast, in the attempt to say it was drivers error.i told them that i wasn't interesting in suing, wasn't interested in placing blame, just interested in their help in assisting me in repairing my garage, and their assistance in me getting a new used vehicle, that's all.i informed them that while hurt by the accident, i wasn't nor didn't seek a attorney, or legal representation, and that i would think that they would want to assist this veteran as a act of kindness.i only asked that they assist in my home repairs, and getting another same like vehicle, in alternate, helping me with my home repairs deductible and assisting me in getting another vehicle, and as a last alternative, i asked them if they would issue a non-qualifying certificate so other than income, i could purchase a vehicle from them, to accomodate my families needs, they just ignored me, now i want justice, because my request were not outrageous.if they would help me get another vehicle for my families needs, i would be totally satisfied, i don't believe in always going through the courts what people can do.

While pulling into park with foot on the brakes, vehicle suddenly accelerated and hit a tree. Also while driving in cruise control, tapped on brakes to disengage cruise control and vehicle suddenly accelerated.dealer checked vehicle and could not find any problems.

My experience happened on july 14, 2009. I was easing into my parking place at the college where i teach, going about zero miles per hour, when all of a sudden i was plummeted into a tree less that five feet in front of me so hard that it totaled my 2002 lexus. The forward movement felt like an airplane intakeoff mode.

The contact owns a 2002 lexus es300. When he drove out of the parking approximately 10 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. He began to panic and crashed into a parked vehicle and a fence. The vehicle stopped when he crashed into a tree and the left front tire came off. He received injuries to the left side of his body. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The police report is available upon request. The manufacturer stated that an engineer will examine the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 58,000.

Consumer stated while parking vehicle anddepressing the brake the vehicle surged forward and ran into a street sign and barrier gate.

I was driving at about 35 mph on highway. When the traffic slowed down, i applied the brake to bring down the speed of the car to about 3-7 mph. After following the car in front of me for about 5 seconds at about 3/4 car distance, i saw the car in front of me speeded up slowly and i decided to follow up by pressing the accelerator moderatly. The car first shuddered, then paused for about 1 second, andfinally accelerated at almost maximum power. This was a near miss. Before this happened, i brought our car to lexus dealer to complain about shuddering/pausing when accelerating from low speed after the car was updated with tsb-tc004-03;the chief technician drove the car and reproduced the kind of problems that we had. However, he said that he could not do anything about it and was going to write a report to toyota corp because it was a software problem. On the other hand, the receipt from the dealer said that they did not find any abnormal transmission shift during test driving, but would file a report.what a contradication! the danger of this transmission problem was further magnified by the fact that 2002 es300 runs very smoothly at most times (>98%). This shudder/pause/acceleration or pause/acceleration that only occurs sporadically under very special conditions gives drivers surprise that is the last thing they want during driving. For curiosity, i tested driving the car for about 50 miniutes by repeatly slowing down to about 5 - 10mph by applying brake, then allowing the car to roll for about 3 seconds without pressing gas paddle, and then accelerating moderately to about 20 - 30 mph. The probobility for the shudder/pause/acceleration is about 5%, while that for pause/acceleration about 15%. It seemed that this problem happended more often on down/up hill..

The contact owns a 2002 lexus es300. The contact stated as he backed out of a parking space the vehicle accelerated and crashed into a parked vehicle. No one was injured. A police report is available if needed. The back end of the vehicle was damaged in the crash. The vehicle was able to be driven to contact's home andlater to a body shop for repair. The toyota manufacturer was called and now the contact was waiting for a representative to return his call. The contact stated prior to the crash he had the acceleration problem, he took the vehicle to the lexus dealer they checked the vehicle but found no failure with the vehicle. The failure mileage was 27,200.

I had pulled into my garage. I had my foot on the brake and lifted it a little to inch forward to my mark ( to allow for the garage door to close) when the car just surged forward! fortunately i applied the brake hard, since my foot was by the brake, but i banged into the garage wall and did damage to the car and the wall.

When the gas pedal was applied, the vehicle paused for 1-2 seconds before proceeding forward. As a result, the consumer had almost hit pedestrians and rear ended other motorists. If the consumer attempts to switch lanes to avoid hitting or rear ending anyone, the vehicle stalls. The vehicle has been serviced 9 times by the dealership, in which diagnostic test have been performed, but no failure code was found. The dealership only conclusion is that this is how the vehicle is suppose to drive.

2002 lexus excelerated on it's own.i was getting on freeway i stepped on gas to go with flow of traffic , then traffic started backing up so i went to use brakes to slow down but car kept excelerating. I had to use both feet to try to stop ,then i felt a pop from gas pedal at that time it stopped excellerating

While on the way to work at approximtely 8:45 am, and shortly after leaving home, i stopped at a stop light at the intersection o muncaster mill road and bowie road.when light turned green i took my foot off of the brake and the car suddenly surged ahead without pushing on the acceralator.i missed the car ahead of me by inches.the brake stopped the car.this is the fourth incident with this car.other incidents have been reported.

I puchased a 2002 lexus 300 from westside lexus in houston, texas.since purchase the vehicle has surged when shifting at lower speeds numerous times and has surged when the vechile is on cruise control.i have complained numerous times to westside lexus about the problem but they aways say that lexus is aware of the problem and is trying to come up with a fix.last year they adjusted the engine control module (ecm) calibration andlexus said the car should drive better - it did at first but is now back to the same old surging at slow shifting speeds.i believe lexus introduced the es330 model this year toavoid a problem with the es300 they could not fix.i am drivig an unsafe vehicle that lexus makes no effort to fix except have the service tech. Give lame excuses.i thought i was purchasing an upscale car to drive instead it has turned out to be a miserable unsafe experience.please make lexus fix the defect or make them refund me my purchase price.thank you.

When driving a speed and the accelerator is pressed hard to pass or to enter a highway, the engine ravs but the car does not accelerate.the dealer tells me that is how the car is designed.i have a 2002 lexus es300but have driven the 2004's and they act the same way.when you stump on the gas and the car does not go. It leaves you in a very procaries situation.

While backing out of the parking space at work, the car went around a bend and continued to the stop sign.approximately 250 feet.i never pushed on the acceralator at all during this time.the car went by itself.whatever was happening, the computer evidently was telling the car to move without pushing the acceralator.

The contact owns a 2002 lexus es300. The contact stated as she came to a stop with her foot on the brake pedal, there was a bump in the road and the vehicle lurched and accelerated forward.

There were two such incidents.upon coming back at lunch time to work, i turned to pull into a parking space.the angle of the car necessitated me to turn the steering wheel very tight to the right.with the pressure on the brake released but with foot in brake position the car surged almost hitting the parked car in front of me.it definitely a surge, a person can feel the sudden energy.in becoming more aware of the car after i had an accident doing this same type of maneveur, there seems to be a problem when trying to maneveur the car for parking and at the same type of the steering wheel turned very tight in one direction.
