Involved in head on collisions at 30mph. Air bags did not deploy.

Engine issues.replaced vacuum hose to 6th cylinder.also, the timing belt is making noise and the mechanic has advised i will need a new engine.the car only has 68,850 miles.also, have repaired the brakes on five occasions and they still squeak.had to repair the window regulator.the srs light and engine service light is on.

Involved in head on collisions at 30mph. Air bags did not deploy.

Transmission failure at 75,000 miles. Excessive check engine light warnings. Bad sensors. Engine noise.

The electrical power to the engine simply goes out; thus affecting the steering.i believe that it is an electrical problem; however, landrover rockville ran a diagnostic and found nothing.in october, the power went out while making a turn and i lost control of the car hitting a curb.also, the sunroof has cost me over $2k.first, i was required to replace the tracks.then the roof began to leak and i was required to replace the entire assembly.this car was a mistake from the beginning.

My sons 2002 land rover freelander caught fire on september 29, 2010 at 4:00 am.the vehicle had been parked since 11:00 pm the previous evening.at 4:00 am my son heard his alarms in the car going off and rushed to see what was going on to find the interior of the car was on fire.he tried to slap the fire out with his hands and received 3rd degree burns due to this.he then ran inside and retrieved a fire extinguisher and put the fire out.the fire was contained, but the damage was so severe, the vehicle was declared a total loss.the fire started in the wiring system under the steering column.we do have a case open with land rover, but their representative stated this is only for their internal use and no compensation would be made.my son only owned the pre-used vehicle for one month and had only secured "liability" insurance only on the vehicle until his next paycheck so he could afford full coverage.who would have thought that a vehicle would catch on fire by itself.we are grateful that he was not harmed further and that the vehicle was not parked in the garage, but we are extremely disappointed that a vehicle which he owned for only one month would catch fire and land rover will not offer any compensation for our loss.

Less than 50,000 miles landrover freelander gives f4 fault, will not shift out of 2nd gear. Has overheating problem, sunroof died, dealer said needs new transmission, completely new wiring harness, new ecu, new door to fix window failure, and!!!!!!!!!!!! a new engine to fix the overheating problem that they tell me is a common thing, and they haven't seen any freelander's get over 65,000 miles without an engine and transmission replacement.luxury vehicle my [xxx].dealership gave me an 18,000 dollar repair estimate. I guess luxury means it costs a lot to drive not you have the luxury of driving without worrying about sitting on the side of the road in a 30,000 dollar piece of crap. Read some forums online. All of these problems are happening everyday, and nothing is being done to make this luxury vehicle company make a better vehicle. I mean [xxx] i should have bought a honda...... At least they have heated seats to keep my [xxx] warm when i wait on the side of the road.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

After the steering system failed completely a week ago (reported separately, odi# 10173809), the land rover dealer in san francisco replaced the rack and pinion assembly.within 2 hours after i got the car back, the electric system failed completely while i was driving and the car stopped in the middle of traffic.

I purchased a new 2002 land rover freelander from land rover new orleans (paretti) on august 19, 2002.since that time, the vehicle has had continuousproblems.the power steering, transmission, transfer case (2), ird unit (2), front drive shaft, manifold chamber and other items have been replaced and the brake pads (2) have had to be changed.the vehicle only has 35,498 miles.after reviewing edmunds.com and other consumer resource sites, it appears that the problems that i encountered have also been encountered by others purchasing this vehicle.i have had 23 warranty claims on this vehicle and land rover north america, inc., as of january 2005, has paid in excess of $11,994.55 for repairs on a vehicle that had a purchase price of $30,603.77.the aforementioned amount does not include the costs of replacing the transfer case, ird unit, front drive shaft and manifold chamber in april 2005 or the replacement of the sun roof assembly in june 2005.neither the local land rover dealer nor land rover north america, inc. Have been cooperative in dealing with me on this issue.

Have owned 2002 lr freelander since may 2008, for around $9,000, have spent $4000 on repairs since. Transfer case went in the end of november, then the transmission died in the middle of january. The car was returned to me "fixed" early february but the transmission died again within 25 miles of the auto shop, luckily the work was under warranty, they found that an electrical issue was the true problem and returned it to me "fixed" again march 6, 2009, not even 20 miles this time and i'm getting the f4 signal, hdc warning, and the gears won't shift. I owe to much on the car to scrap it, but can't imagine wasting more money to have it sit in the shop for another couple of months (while im making payments on it) just to suffer the same fate.

While applying the brake pedal, the consumer heard a loud squeaking noise. Then, thevehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over.the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, who determined the brakerotors and pads needed to be replaced, and replaced them. However, the problem recurred. The consumer stated the coolant system failed and the vehicle had electrical problems.

What is to say that has not already been said about this nightmare! i have replaced everything on this car: power steering system, engine manifold, coolant reservoir, water pump, radiator, brakes 2x, camshaft and crankshaft sensor, crankshaft pulley, timing belt, and now i am lucky enough to have the same transmission failure happening that everyone else who owns this junk experiences.this is not to mention that the sunroof does not work, the passenger door lock, and 3 of the 5 power windows do not work either.in the last year alone i have put more than $3000+ into this thing, and that is but a fraction of total i have put into it during ownership..and the blue book value is less than $5000 at best! words cannot express how angry it makes me, and how pathetic it is of land rover to knowingly ignore the problems associated with this vehicle and the suffering that owners of it have to endure.the transmission problem alone should have a mandatory recall forced on land rover to fix for all freelanders, and that should just be the beginning! i cannot tell you how many land rover technicians have blatantly told me that lr knows these are a money pit nightmare full of defects, and that they hate to work on them and feel bad for us.when will this sort of treatment by big corporations end? what ever happened to standing behind your product? whatever happened to government agencies assigned to enforce rules governing this sort of thing actually doing something for the consumer? i could go on and on about this nightmare, trust me, but i am too worked up at this point as it is.please nhtsa, do something, anything for us unfortunate freelander owners!

We own a 2002 land rover freelander.it has been in the repair shop numerous times.while on a trip all of the warning lights on the dashboard lite up and the transmission became stuck in 4th gear.because road side assistance could not direct us to an open dealership, we had to drive from buffalo ny to chicago il.once back in the city, the dealership took the car and replaced the computer, which took more than two weeks.on the way home, the same problem occurred.we brought the car back and the dealership has had the vehicle for the past 26 days to replace the transmission.we went in to try and trade it in for a discovery and they only offered 14,000.we have tried to get corporate to buy back the car at our pay off amount and they have refused.we are currently exploring our options under the ucc and the magnuson-moss act for breach of warranty.

Bought a 2002 land rover freelander used a little over a year ago with under 55,000 miles. Just got it back yesterday from the shop with an estimated repair cost of over $10000.00 and that is just in parts not labor. Did some research on the vehicle and come to find out others have had the same problems with less mileage on there vehicles and there have been absolutely no recalls on this vehicle that include any of these problems. The worst of which being the engine leaking antifreeze into the oil. This could cause the motor to overheat and seize and lock up. Who knows what kind of damage or what kind of accident this could have caused if this had happened to the vehicle when my wife was driving to work . We lucked out and discovered the problems before my wife, myself or anyone else got hurt. There are major problems with these vehicles and landrover should be held responsible.

2002 land rover freelander experienced a vehicle fire.*mrthe consumer addressed dealership several times, land rover told him that the vehicledid not meet the mexico lemon law guidelines and they were not in any position to repurchase the vehicle. The consumer also complained about other problems with the vehicle such as electrical problems, the rear passenger door did not unlock with the remote, drivers rear seat did not fold, the rear window did not go up when it was cold and the drivers seat was squeaky. The consumer had made numerouscomplaints to the dealership before the fire occurred.

The year is accurate, month and date are approximations started having problems with overheating and coolant leaks. Coolant wouldn't puddle under vehicle, though.but i could smell it sometimes with windows open. Then, one day it would not start. Towed it to land rover dealer and over the course of 3 days, they couldn't start it,either. Was told it needed a new engine.paid out $5800+.now,with 104,000 miles,it's losing coolant, again. They claimed the over flow container was leaking. Had it replaced. And it is still losing coolant.it is not puddling under the truck.i saw, online, where the freelander has a possible engine defect, with cylinder sleeves and gasket problems.do i have any recourse with land rover? or, could the lemon law come into effect? i,also, have experienced rear window and sunroof motor failures. I am retired. I cannot afford to replace another engine ! thank you.

My 2002 land rover freelander has experienced sluggish acceleration to a jolt and dowshifts on its own at freeway speed. About 2 weeks after buying it used i took it to a local repair shop and they said i needed a new transmission, had it towed back to the dealer and they said it didn't. Needless to say they wouldn't replace it. It has a overheating problem which is continuous. The engine sounds like it has no oil in it, even after an oil change i have to check it to make sure because the noise is so loud. The hdc light comes on and the vehicle seems to drive in an almost 4wheel low at all times. There was antifreeze in my oil. This vehicle has major problems!!!!!!!!

2002 land rover freelander has problems with faulty cam sensor, faulty sunroof, transmission and battery.*mrthe battery and strutswere replaced. The driver's side window would not close or open easily, so the dealer replaced the regulator.the vehicle overheated. The engine light illuminated and different componets were replaced to try and rectify the problem.

Heater doesn't provide powerful heat and right foot gets so hot and left foot freezes while driving. Car shakes and rumbles often, sounding like there is no oil. Had severe water leak from missing seals around rear cargo door. Seals, headliner and rug had to be replaced. Gas cap can only be removed with key in it. If key is removed while gas cap is off, makes for extremely difficult time to replace (about 5-10 minutes to work the key back in). Dashboard lights come on frequently to warn of a failure when there is no such failure. Engine doesn't start on first try a lot of times. Once driving for a while then parking for, car sometimes doesn't start on first try. Shifting is difficult, rpms rev pretty high. Car has lurched forward when speed decreases (i.e. Going down hill).

January 15th, 2005 my wife left work and the vehicle would not start.the outside air temperature was ~ 20 f.all other electrical components were working, but the starter selenoid would not engage.several attempts were made to jump start the vehicle and an attempt to reset the security yeilded nothing.the diagnosed no fault after having the vehicle for 3 weeks.

The vehicle was picked up on february 5th from the dealership, after ebing there for three weeks for a no start issue where it failed on the way home.we complained to the dealership and this time the ignition key cylinder was replaced.

The vehicle was driven from work to a relatives house were it failed to restart after setting for 15 minutes.the had to be push out of the way, one of the pushers injured their back, who was treated and release from henry ford hospital.the vehicle was left over night and was attempted to be started the following day.the starter selenoid would not engage.the vehicle was repaired with another ingnition key cylinder after the first replacement had failed. The vehicle was not returned after seven weeks of service because of damage during service.which took another two weeks to complete.

Our 2002 landrover was purchased used and the mileage started at 3,500. It was a show room car. When the mileage reached mid 40,000 miles the check engine light came on. We heard strange noises coming from engine , and the car had trouble accelerating. We brought itto the dealer, and made it sothat the check engine light went away. However, the car still did not accelerate well, making it difficult to drive on freeway.after a while, the light came on again. We brought the carto dealer again, and once morethey worked on it, but the results were similar. When we passed the 50,000 mileage mark the car started to fall apart rapidly. The transmission went out, the rear door didn't open from outside, the sun roof broke, and the starter also broke. This all happened very fast. When we went to dealer, they said we were no longer covered under the warranty, even though we bought the car at 3,500 miles to start with.so we thought that we would be covered until 53,500. Therefore, we had to pay for all the repairs ourselves, and the transmission alone cost us $5000 to repair. We are worried that the car will continue to break down the longer we have it and we don't know what to do.

The car was purchased new in 2002.with only 23,000 miles, the vehicle has been out of service for43 days with catastrophic mechanical failures, including: 21 days for a new wiring harness; 3 days for a new gearshift assembly and 8 days for a new transmission and ecu and front brakes. Additionally, the vehicle has been in the shop 8 times for warranty repairs; and brakes. The vehicle is currently in the shop where it was been for the last 11 days with the dealer once again trying to resolve warning light and transmission issue. I have hadproblems with the vehicle shifting to lower gears by itself at freeway speeds.in addition all of the on-board failure lights coming on and stay on routinely.the car continues to be plagued by electrical/mechanical problems. After every visit the dealer i am assured the problem has been fixed by both the dealer and land rover customer service; only to find myself bringing the vehicle back literally days later with the exact same problem. Within 8 months of purchasing the new vehicle, it required three separate visits to the dealer for a total of 15 maintenance problems, but the purchasing dealer could not fix any of these problems.in june 2002, i brought the vehicle to another dealer with identical maintenance problems. Though the car continues to have hard shifting and failure lights. In october 2003, i started caring a digital camera in the vehicle so that i could document the problems. *la

Land rover, freelander hse 2002. Engine valve leak, 5th cylinder not firing, catalytic sensor went bad, pressure valve leakage. The car stooped all of a sudden. Just crossed the manufacturer's warranty,by 700 miles.

The brake lights sometimes work and sometimes do not work (cited in 2 incidents by the police).all parts are fine (by check-up of a repair workshop), and no repair can be possibly done.probably, the height of the brake lights above the ground is too low, so that it is sometimes too damp or wet (after snow or rain) for the brake lights to work properly.when they dry up, they work again.next, the 2 brake lights are on the 2 corners of the bumper, and the central brake light is high on the tailgate.theoretically, the 3 brake lights give warning enough when the car stops.however, there are 2 tail lights are high on the fenders (the 2 sides of the car's tailgate), relatively far away from the 2 brake lights on the bumper.the 2 tail lights give a wrong impression to any drivers behind this car, and let those drivers misunderstand the tail lights to be the brake lights (even the 2 police officers misunderstood in the 2 incidents).this will cause collision in reality.

I purchased my 2002 landrover in aug 02. Since then it has been in the shop for over 30 days for repair work to the stereo, sunroof, throttle assemby, tranction control warning light, passenger window breaking, etc. However, i was most disturbed to learn that landrover is "finding" out, as quoted by two dealerships, that the breaks need to be replaced every 12000 miles becasue the vehicle is too heavy for the pads used during manufacturing. Landrover north america has provided no relief in this matter and maintains that it is my personal driving habits that are responsible and this is a normal wear and tear item. I have owned several other suvs and have never had to replace breaks even up to 70,000 miles driving on moutain roads. I believe landrover na has a personnel responsibility to disclose the additional cost of $300 that each customer has to pay every 12k miles for break in addition to the $350 they have to pay for their scheduled service every 12k miles. I doubt they would sell another vehicle. Even the service manager at the dealership that services my car admitted he wouldn't by one either.

On november 1st my wife and ileft la proper headed towards phoenix, az. With the mileage now at 49,807 and approximately 2 hours of driving on i 10the car was losing power, so i did my best to safely pull over to the break down lane which was next to the on ramp (very scary). I had been driving at 65 miles per hour when the car would no longer accelerate. I had to call a tow truck because after i let it rest a minute or two it wouldn't turn over. When i looked under the hood i didn't see anything out of the ordinary, no smoke, the coolant tank was full, i checked the oil dipstick and it seemed fine. There were no lights that came on inside the auto to signal that something was wrong, no overheating etc. I had it towed to the nearest dealer and was told to come back next morning.i was told that the engine blew a gasket and was advised due to damage to the engine was to replace it. I was quoted a price of $10,000.00! i ended up selling it for salvage for $500 since we were traveling so far away from home and the cost to tow it to rhode island didn't seem worth it. Since then i have contacted land rover and have been given the run around like many other owners. I also have had the chance since this occurrence to check via internet that this is not unusual for the 2002 freelander.i feel this engine should of been recalled.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander. The contact stated that the engine overheated when the vehicle was turned on. The vehicle was taken to the mechanic for inspection who confirmed that the engine coolant was consuming prematurely and there was no evidence of a leak. The mechanic replaced the thermostat, the water pump, and the motor fan regulator; however the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was not made of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 96,000.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander. The contact stated that coolant was leaking from the vehicle and the vehicle would not start as a result. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they informed the contact that the vehicle needed a replacement engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000. The vin was not available.

To begin, purchased the vehicle new in 2002 and consistent maintenance at land rover dealership since purchased. First issue is the engine, seems to make noise like a diesel loud and vibrates.told thatthe engine was ok for over 2 years then now all of a sudden the engine has a leak, leaks water into the engine oil area and that the engine needs to be replaced.only after the warranty expired.still an issue.secondly, the transmission began to have issues after the 2nd year of ownership and and was told that this the way the car handles. Third and most important, this car has been maintenanced at dealership, no accidents.the steering began to wobble and wheel began to move around quite suddenly.when i took the car into the service department, they acknowledged that the bolts within the steering pack had sheared off and were broken and needed to be replaced.i stated that this was a serious safety issue and should be covered, even though the warranty has since expired.we were told that the unit needed to be replaced and that land rover knew about the problems however it is not their issue to assist customers. I want these problems fixed.i carry my grandchildren in this car, have kept it maintenenced consistently and always at the dealership . There are no accidents with this car and i want it fixed.i am getting the run around from land rover that it is my issue and not theirs, when it is clearly a design defect all around for both the steering pack and the engine issues.

I began accelerating on a viadock (bridge) when i felt a snap underneath me, as i reached the peak of the brigde, the car stalled out and i began descending on the bridge with my 2 daughters in the car.it completely stopped before i was able to reach the bottom of the bridge, which put me in harms way of traffic coming over the hill.i immediately hit my hazards and prayed everyone would see me before rear ending me.i was able to get the car towed. Then i found out it my timing belt broke; causing my engine to shut down. Total cost to fix will be $4000.i researched this make and model and found that hundreds of other people have reported similar issues.there seems to be a lot of issues with this particular make/model/year.the reviews on how land rover has been handling this particular issue are mixed with some saying they rectified the problem immediately and others saying they would not even respond to their complaints.i am nervous to see how they handle mine.

I bought the car new and it operated well until aprox. 80,000 mi when i would go through a reservoir of coolant every 20 miles. I took it to the dealer several times and they would keep it for a week, charge me $2,000 each time and say they could find nothing wrong. I addressed the problems documented on the internet about this problem and they responded that i should stop believing everything i read on line. On april 4, 2010 i checked the oil and it was full of coolant. The dealer said they still could not find the problem but the engine was shot and they would give me $800 for the car. Land rover has been defensive and unresponsive in dealing with the problem all along.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander. The contact stated that while parked, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was found that the ignition coils would have to be replaced and antifreeze had leaked into the oil and a flush would have to be performed. The technician also stated that the camshaft was fractured and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. Updated 05/08/13*ljthe consumer insist the camshaft was damaged byt the service repair technician. Updated 06/17/2013

I have a 2002 freelander bought new 50000 miles later new engine 4000 miles later new transmission 45000 miles needs another engine through in a window problem to. According to the dealershipi was told that there is a design flaw in the engine and the company that makes the engine is no longer in business and land rover wont help because the second engine only had a 1 year warranty. Land rover needs to standby their product especially when they knewthere were problems with this engine what can be done.

We were hearing a loud noise and had no idea what it was.as it turns out we were first told that it needed a new engine, however after careful diagnostics we were finally told that it needs a new intake manifold.this is about $2200. That includes labor costs and part.i have no money and the car just sits in the front of my house and is not drivable at all.i still owe so much on this car and have no idea what to do....

Land rover, freelander hse 2002. Engine valve leak, 5th cylinder not firing, catalytic sensor went bad, pressure valve leakage. The car stooped all of a sudden. Just crossed the manufacturer's warranty,by 700 miles.

The engine started to overheat so i pulled over on the interstate and let engine cool, this continued until i was able to make it home. Dealer now says that the engine needs a new heads and head gaskets. Apparently this is a common problem on this vehicle. After locating this site i do believe that this is a defect in manufacturing.

Problem started out with engine oil leaking into engine cooling system on or about september 15, 2008. Engine coolant leaked from system, causing vehicle to overheat and stall in traffic. Root cause of failure still to be determined.vehicle is now out of service.

I was driving the car away from my house and the engine died. It wouldn't restart and after about 2 minutes of trying, it started making a grinding noise. When i took it to a mechanic, he said it had blown the head gasket, then the piston rod had collapsed, so the engine was virtually ruined. The vehicle had 96,000 miles on it. Land rover produced thousands of these vehicles with faulty engines(the 2.5 v-6). I also want to know if there is a class-action lawsuit filed against land rover and how to get involved with it.

My car was overheating, had $1200 worth of repairs; now they are telling me it needs a new engine for $9000. Through the internet i have learned how many complaints there are with the 2002 land rover freelander - basically, after 70,000 miles it needs a new engine, this will be followed with a new transmission. My car has 75,000 miles and is sitting at the dealer, land rover "volunteered" to pay 20-percent; the land rover dealer "volunteered" to pay 20-percent...leaving me with 60-percent. They are aware of the problem - and will not do the right thing.

Head gasket failure.

I purchased a new 2002 freelander from land rover fort worth (tx) in january of 2002.while under warranty the car had numerous problems.my warranty expired in february of 2006 (4 years), but due to my low mileage 32,000 miles, i did not purchase an extended warranty.since february 2006, i have replaced the brakes for the 3rd time ($1000), had the engine overheat due to a faulty temp gauge which in turn blew the intake gasket ($1500), replaced the heater core again (pd. For by dealership), and am now faced with replacing the entire transmission ($5000).my transmission trouble began in early august 2006, when the car began to jerk and shudder unexpectedly.i immediately took the car into the dealership to check out the issue. They replaced the transmission temp sensor and said the care was fixed.i picked up the "fixed" car and 4 hours later the dangerous jumping/shuddering happened again.while attempting to drive the car back to the dealership, the problem grew worse and several warning lights lit up on the dash.i pulled over and the car was then flatbedded to the dealership.the next diagnosis was that an electronic computer chip (ecc) for the transmission needed to be replaced.the part was ordered and installed - but this did not fix the problem.the dealership now states that the entire transmission needs to be replaced for $5000.the car currently has 37,000 miles (highway and city miles only - no off-roading) and has been serviced on time and only at lr dealershipsfor routine maintenance.i find this entire situation unacceptable.

I was driving to get dinner with my daughter and my landrover freelander just fell dead while driving. This incident could have been fatal if it had happened on the freeway. I had the car towed to my home less than 2 miles away and had a certified land rover mechanic come to inspect the vehicle. He informed me that the motor locked up for no apparent reason. The car was not low on oil, nor had it been overheating and there were no other liquids mixed in the oil. The only option going forward would be to have the entire engine replaced. This vehicle has had one mechanical failure after another and is not worth the money spent.

Water pump failed, took to dealer for replacement, gas pump failed took it to shop to replace it, gas tank lid failed, both one from dealer to replace it, engine cooling system failed, transmission failed, took it to shop they refuse to fix, they say is not their fault and is not cover by warranty anymore, window motor failed, windshield wiper switch failed, headlights failed, coolant container crack, replaced with new one from dealer. Stop light recalled. Air filtering system retains water which allows mold to grow, air filters replaced.

This is about transmission failure for 2002 landrover/freelander. Keeping the car in best shape and maintaining on schedule, still the transmission went bad with less than 40,000 mileage. Car warranty is for 50k or 4 years. Unfortunately, the warranty was up in january 2006. Engine has special noise and car is coming apart. Window does not roll up and down, rear seat got stuck and wouldn't get its position. One problem after another, but the main one is the transmission.

In october of 2002 my husband and i purchased a 2002 freelander from landrover north dade of florida.the car was in the showroom with minimal miles.within three(3) days of purchase we returned the car because it shook violently after reaching a speed of 50 mph.i must admit the dealership advised us of some type of malfunction and offered us an exact replacement freelander.at that point we should have asked for a refund of our cash payment and left landrover alone.it has been a completely expensive nightmare diving this lemon with its myriad of problems:repeated overheating, loss of power without warning (often times resulting in close call situations, replaced brakes and rotor (lost count), not to mention an air conditioner unit that only works on full power(imagine that in florida).at present, the vehicle is at an authorized landrover repair shop because the warranty has ended. The landrover dealership has been negligent even rude when approached regarding all these mechanical defects.two weeks out of every two to three months, my young children and i are without transportation and at least $800.00 minimum, each time.most importantly however is my fear to drive the car at all, and to add insult to injury, we are offered $3000.00 by carmax when we attempted to sell them a car we purchased for over $30,000. With 73k miles.

I purchased this car less than a year ago. Time for inspection and car has many problems looked on line at complaints and i am sick to see what i am in for with this car. Its is sucking up coolant,(bad sign), head gasket ,oil in coolant, engine failure. Why was i allowed to buy this car? do we have consumer protection? i purchase car from dealer that sold 85% land rovers. Do you think they new what i was in for? yes!. You shouldn't allow cars to be sold in america if there is no actual fix for the car. I read that engine replacement is bad as original. Will someone buy this car? i wouldn'twant to be shady and tell someone this is a good car.

Freelander 2002 has had many defects. The transmission failed at approx. 50k miles & was replaced.power windows failed. A/c hose cracked & repaired. Manifold replaced. Exterior brake lights have been replaced. Electrical power to passenger door lock system have been replaced. Now, at 70k miles the coolant leaking and engine knocking. Not worth replacing engine at this point. This car has cost more to repair than what is was worth. It should be recalled as a lemon & law suit against land rover.

My land rover freelander has had 2 engine failures under 50k mi., the first at 26k and the second24k later. 2 sunroof replacements, 2 side window repairs, 1 overheating incident, and the car just runs hot all the time, with hot coolant smell.

Bought the car used 2002 freelander land rover v6 and drove it.day four heard a loose bolt sound, it went away.later that day driving home with children in the car, it died on the freeway, no warning lights, no warning at all, just died.turns out the timing belt broke and broke the valves and now they want to replace the entire engine.i paid 4k for the car and it will cost 6k to repair.this car is dangerous.we had to move over 3 highway lanes with no power and sit on the side of the road for 1.5 hours to be towed.i had my children in the car with me, this was very very scary!

I have a land rover freeland that started having coolant leakage in early february of 2007.i tried to get the car in to get fixed and was put off by land rover until my warranty expired.they never fixed it.it leaks coolant constantly, it looses power, it over heats and steams, the coolant is an oily brown color no matter how many times i flush it.this car has a bad head gasket i'm afraid and i've read about and know many people with the exact same problem.i've replaced the reservoir bottle, flushed the coolant, replaced the thermostat and nothing fixes the problem.i had a month long battle with land rover to fix it and they refused.this entire engine needs to be recalled, this is a terrible car and a hazard on the road, i'm scared every time i see a freelander that it's going to blow something and kill someone on the freeway, land rover should be ashamed and all the cars should be recalled.

2002 land rover freelander defective engine replacement *cwafter taking the vehicle to the dealership, the consumer was informed the engine had a design flaw. The consumer was also informed it would cost$5,800, but the replacement engine also had a design flaw. The vehicle had a coolant leak. The first coolant leak was found during an inspection. The coolant overflow reservoir was replaced due to a crack in the plastic container. The second leak had to be performed due to the thermostat leaking. Upon completion of the coolant leak repair, the technician noticed there was a knocking type noise in the engine. The consumer brought the vehicle back to the dealer and the noise had become louder. After listening to the motor and isolating the knocking noise, it was determined the noise was in the area of the #2 cylinder connecting rod deep into the engine block.a cause was never determined for the failure of the engine.

Many problems. 1st. Thermostat failure before 200 mile mark. Replaced. Coolant leaks. Heater replaced, leaking coolant. Engine sound like a diesel truck, never told what it was. Sunroof broke 3 times. Transmission replaced twice. Steering column was not bolted correctly, steering wheel always off center. Coolant still leaks...

We purchased a 02 freelander by land rover and it has turned out to be a lemon. Repairs after repairs. It overheats and when it does it overheats the starter causing it to fail as well if it overheats too much it causes the head gaskets to blow or a crack on the engine.

During the repair of our transmission, we began to get check engine lights.after the transmission was fixed, it was taken to the dealer for service.upon driving to the dealer, the car had no power.this became very difficult to drive and dangerous.trying to get up to the 65 mph speed limit on a freeway took almost 2 miles.i was also worried the car would stall in traffic due to this condition.the car was serviced and it was determined that the mass airflow sensor and the variable intake motors 1 and 2 had failed.the variable intake motors had failed 15,000 miles /12 months before and were replaced during the long block replacement.after all repairs were completed the car was taken home.the next day the check engine light came on.the following day i scheduled an appointment.during the drive to the dealer, the same power problems were present.this made driving this car dangerous in that there was no way to know if it would accelerate.the dealer then determined that the air intake manifold gasket had cracked.this too was a new part from the long block repair 15,000 miles /12 months prior.right now this repair is being performed.the land rover dealer acknowledges that these car should not be owned without any type of warranty due to the numerous problems.

We purchased a 2002 land rover freelander. The car has had numerous occasions of overheating, losing coolant and oil and we have now been told a new engine is needed. The car owner was also told at 50,756 miles that a new transmission was necessary. Apparently land rover is aware of this recurring problem with this vehicle, but is doing nothing to correct the problems. There has been occasions when the car stops or overheat is causing potential safety concerns/problems for the car occupants as well as other drivers.

Since i purchased my 2002 landrover freelander in aug of 2007 with 63456 miles on it, i have taken it in for numerous costly repairs. The first being 12 days after the purchase in attempt to fix what i thought was causing the disappearance of my coolant, the cracked coolant reservoir was replaced, only to find out to the engine would continually overheat and i would become stranded on the road on at least 3 occasions even after i had taken it in by this point and had it suction tested to see if a leak could be located with in the coolant system and was told it passed. So i continued to operate the vehicle shuttling myself to and from school and work, stocking my vehicle with necessary coolant to maintain the proper level.after a traumatic incident on the freeway in i june 2008, where i was forced to quickly pull to the shoulder going form 60 to zero while still in traffic, i took the car in to have it serviced again where i soon found out the coolant contaminated the oil because of the seal slipping (through research of my own i have learned the material the seal is made of is in adequate to hold high temperatures for even a reasonable life of the car). Unable to afford the costly replacement of the engine which was advised at this time, 6/08 (over the worth of the vehicle at $7,579 + taxes new and with multiple research attempts done to find a used one with no success because it's such a common problem with these models) i bought some time with an engine flush only to have the internal damage the seal failure had caused result in the complete seizure of my engine as of 1/09. I have been put in harms way in near misses of causing an accident as i uncontrollably come to a stop and soon after sit helplessly on the side of the road through no fault of my own, countless times do to the manufactures negligence for the safety of the operator. Even after this whole ordeal, i still find myself fortunate to only be out a costly vehicle and not the loss of my life.

The passenger cabin filled with smoke.apparent cause is a blown cam plug.dealer claims cold climate causes build-up of vapor presure in the engine.the plug blows out and oil pours onto the hot exhaust system.dealer claims they have seen this before, and that a cold climate kit that is used in canada resolves the issue.but land rover will not pay for the modification which cost me $296!this could have easily caused a fire of an accident.

Numerous times the engine of my freelander loses compression and the vehicle will not travel at a speed faster than 5 mph. The vehicle lurches and won't maintain a proper speed. The vehicle has been into the dealership several times. I have been told that they aren't sure what is wrong with it. Approximately 8 months ago the replaced the throttle body. The vehicle worked properly for 7 months. A month ago it happened again. This time i was on the expressway in between semi trucks. The vehicle lost speed and i could not tracel faster than 5 mph. I was able to get the vehicle off to the side of the road. I let it coll down for 20 minutes. When i started the vehicle it was able to drive. I took it to the dealership and they said that they didn't know what the problem was. However, they did state, "we have been having problems with this model."i was told to drive the vehicle home and bring it back if it happened again. One week later, it happened again on the highway. Again' i let it cool down, and i was able to get it home. I made contact with the dearlership and land rover of north america, and not once have they asked to see the vehicle, offer to fix it, look at it. All the have attempted to do is for me to trade up to a discovery. The vehicle sits in my driveway because it is too dangerous to drive and land rover refuses to take the vehicle back, or even offer to fix it.

The 2002 land rover freelander has been nothing but trouble since i purchased it in 2005. It has always had problems with overheating, when i talked to the dealership about it, they told me the freelander burnt through coolant faster than most cars. I did not think it was normal for it to burn through a gallon of coolant every 3-4 weeks. This has continued since then. Until now, my freelander"s timing belt broke ( at 60,800) well before recommended changing of the belt and has essentially totaled my car. Since it will cost me a minimum of $4,500 to fix it. (up to $8,500). The car is only worth $8,000.

This car had only 61000 miles on it and needed a new engine.coolant leaked into engine just 3 weeks after i paid $2k for work on the coolant system (reservoir, hoses) and a plenum valve replacement to address the same problem it was then experiencing (overheating and engine revving).dealer said a piston sleeve had slipped.full engine replacement required.this car has received all of its recommended service appointments and had a new transmission at 50k miles.

2002 land rover freelander61,000 miles - head gasket gone - overheating - no engines available.

My 2002 landrover freelander has spent more time in the mechanic shop than it has spent in my driveway!before the warranty expired, i took it into the encino dealership several times with the same problem.the last time i had it towed there, the car had just dumped all of its fluids onto the floor and was smoking again.this keeps happening over and over and over.dealership said they checked and the car was fine.warranty expired and problem continued to occur.took it to another mechanic and was told there is a major problem with the transmission -- must be replaced.also having problems with the coolant leaking--have tried to fix the issue several times--still have same problem.mechanic discovered a crack in the engine.if this is starting to sound familiar it is because there are several different forums online with 2002 freelander owners all saying the same thing!what is being done about this???!!!!the repairs were extremely costly for me as a college student and now as a mother of a newborn i am terrified to drive the car for fear of something serious happening!i have even been told by mechanics and even the service manager at the pasadena landrover dealership that landrover is aware of the problems and warned me it is a lemon!i have been calling landrover's corporate offices for weeks and am still waiting for some kind of answer...

Engine failed due to a design flaw.needed to replace engine.

My landrover freelander se (2002) stop in the middle of the road due to loss of power...so many customers have various complaint against land rover product,....see following complaints from various people.landrover still selling cars in us,how long it will take for us government to interfere and help consumers to provide support? we must do something asap and don't approve any cars from manufacturers like land rover.please respond at your convenience,

1numerous problems over several years, including (but not limited to) sudden loss of coolant and oil.and yesterday, a strong smell of hot oil, and sudden squealing from right, front wheel.2complete loss of engine power.vehicle is no longer drivable. 3contacted landrover.

My husband and i purchased a 2002 freelander type s with around 60,000 miles on it. After owning it for less then a week it started overheating. Each time it would start to overheat, it would require us to immediately pull off the road to prevent the engine block from cracking. I took it into the landrover dealer to find out what the problem could and was told that the cylinder sleeve was slipping causing coolant to leak into the engine and mix with oil and will eventually cause the engine to freeze. The only remedy for this problem was to replace the engine at the cost of 12,000 dollars and that does not include labor costs. After reading quite a few complaints this seems to be the number one problem with this vehicle. Landrover should be at fault and should recall the faulty parts in the engine!

Both head gaskets are leaking coolant from all four corners. This is a common failure in this model caused by the cylinder sleeves coming loose. The sleeves contact the head gaskets causing them to leak. Eventually the engine fails. There have been continuing coolant problems with this car since new. When it was a month old all the coolant disappeared. The dealer offered no explanation. Since then the coolant reservoir and temperature sensor have been replaced. It has always leaked coolant.

After buying the car used @ 42,000 miles my 2002 land rover freelander was immediately diagnosed a month after intermittent starting problems with a blown head gasket and i needed a new engine.my car is a safety hazard as it stopped randomly of a highway and left me stranded.i am not the only person experiencing this blown head gasket problem as it is an engineering failure of this suv.land rover will not help, this is a disgrace that so many people have suffered from this problem and nothing has been done.

Transmission failure at 75,000 miles. Excessive check engine light warnings. Bad sensors. Engine noise.

I bought a 2002 land rover freelander as a 2nd owner of the vehicle from a local car dealership.since the purchase of the vehicle, i replaced a sunroof, a transmission, the brakes require constant replacement (more often than should be necessary), a passenger door window motor and the engine has been replaced once and now has blown again - i am unable to have this engine replaced #1 there are no more engines as the landrover dealer only made this defective model 1 year and there have been so many engines replaced by other owners that there are no other engines available.even if there were any engines i would not pay $10,000 to have another "defective" engine placed in this vehicle.there are over 1400 messages on the edmond forum.com outlining other peoples similar complaints.this defective vehicle has caused countless people's credit to be ruined, and financial hardship to untold families.i wonder why nothing has been done already with all the complaints that have been filed.landrover needs to reimburse these owners the money they have spent - such as myself on repairs, constantly in the shop and having to pay for rental vehicles.the local dealer was rude and had absolutely no sympathy and actually told me after bringing my vehicle in to them over and over that "he will be glad when my husband and i get out from under this vehicle" and admitted that this vehicle had been a problem for them.but... The dealer wouldn't even offer us a free oil change for all of our hardships.it is a shame.i hope eventually something is done before this company "bellies up" and files bankruptcy and all of these families that have been ruined will have no recourse for their financial woes as a result of this horrible situation.please help any way you can!

I have had my 2002 land rover freelander maintained meticulously... But the engine kept over heating and i had disappearing coolant.now i am in need of a 3rd engine and i only have 62,000 miles on my car.since my vehicle is out of warranty a new engine will cost me $10,000.land rover said they would pay half of a new engine.but admit they put a faulty engine in 2 years ago when i received my 2nd engine.

Vehicle was purchased with 40,000 miles on it from a dealership in december of 2004.day after vehicle was purchased rear window motor broke. Dealership replaced.two weeks later car began to lose power, dealership replaced sensor.loss of power again dealership ending up performing engine work.vehicle continually displaced hill decent / track control light.dealership replaced.at 65000 miles keyless entry stopped unlocking all doors with the exception of the driver's side door.doors can no longer be unlocked from the inside as well.rear passenger window on driver's side does not go down.loss of power issue is happening again now at 75,000 miles.

I own a 2002 land rover freelander, with a need of a new engine. I have spent over $10,000 in repairs to date and now they tell me i need a new engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our well-maintained 2002 freelander had engine and transmission failure within 6 months of reaching 50,000 miles.in both cases the failures occurred during highway driving with no warning lights or indications of problems.in both cases the loss of power/control posed a serious health hazard to everyone in the car.one of these events occurred immediately following service and safety check by the dealer. This care is so badly designed that is a driving hazard and should be recalled in its entirety.the very extensive information on major failures without warning attest to the dangers that this vehicle is imposing onthe public on a daily basis.

Have had multiple problems with vehicle with replacements needed for the following items:sunroof assembly, brakes and rotors twice, coolant tank, coolant tank lid, intake manifold assembly, wiper switch, 2 vacuum hoses, window regulator, sunroof drain tubes and headliner.now, despite maintaining the recommended service schedule, we are going to have to have the engine replaced at 67k miles.the coolant is leaking into the oil and after having the head gaskets replaced and a cooler part replaced, the dealer now believes that there is a crack in the sleeve.there apparently is a back order on replacement engines so i will have to cough up $$$ to keep the oil drained and coolant filled until one is available.why should a $35,000 vehicle need an engine replaced at 67k miles?

We bought the freelander 2002 in april of 2002. Brand new. Started to have break problems and alarm system problems, along with constant air coolant/broken air conditioning problems that we had to take the car in for repairs.the transmission broke down in 2006 at approximately 30,000 miles. The dealer haggled with us because the warranty had just expired two months earlier! we ended up paying approximately $2,000 towards a new transmission that we now discover has been an ongoing problem for land rover freelanders.then, as i was driving my car a few days ago to be serviced, the car started to overheat. I had to have the car towed to the dealer and we are now told that the engine has broken down and that we are going to have to pay several thousand dollars to have the engine replaced.we told the dealer that the engine has had well documented defect issues from manufacture and that the innocent consumer should not have to pay for a manufacturing defect.our car is now undrivable and only has 37,000 miles on it. We are being told that.

Coolant leaking, head gasket failure, thermostat failure for 90,000 miles.

2002 land rover freelander s, engine and transmission failure,,,,,,,,,,,

I only have 65,xxx miles on my 2002 freelander and it now needs a new engine-somehow there is oil in my coolant tank? the dealer told me that it needs to go away. I still owe on this car-talk about upside down in a loan.

My 2002 landrover freeland has overheated 5 times since i purchased it in 2003.each time the rand rover dealer repaired it and said it was something different. It just happened again and i brought it to a gargage.(since my warranty is up and the dealer ship claimed it was something different each time.).. This time it was fixed costing me $800.00. Not only has this been a problem, but i have had the headlights go out on me while driving across state at night on the thruwa and now the rear window is now not working. I have had nothing but problems and have spent alot of $$ on this truck. Unfortunately i cannot afford to buy something else. I am a single mom trying to out her kids through college... : (i hope something can be done to prevent another consumer having these problems and someone really getting hurt. I have been very lucky i havent been in an accident or had the truck blow up while it over heated !!!lolthanks....

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Engine failure onthe road.

Multiple problems expensive and hard to find parts, fuel pump, thermostat and transmission. Suv stalls in traffic, thermostat leaks constantly and transmission jerks violently in second gear.

2002 landrover freelander52,000miles engine overheats, coolant leaking into engine engine replaced with new from landrover.52,300 engine defective replaced again60,000mi engine again needs to be replaced, no help from landrover.

My 2002 land rover freelander had an engine failure in september 2006. This is a common problem with this make of vehicle and cost me $6,849.61 to replace since i was out of warranty.other popular problems with this vehicle are problems with the window motors. My sunroof and two backdoor windows would not operate properly. I could only pay to repair the backdoor windows at the expense of $904.88. Also, the drivers side door lock does not function properly, but i was not able to have that fixed.

I have a 2002 landrover freelander. I just had a head gasket replaced at 80,000 miles. And now i think the transmission is going out. There are to many complaints on the land rovers for something not to be done. They need to be held responsible. These cars are not safe.

On two separate occasions, one days after my car was cleared for a second time by a land rover dealer. My car went into 'limited perfomance mode' while i was commuting to work....i was in the high speed lane and the middle lane and my car would not accelerate about 20 mph.i had to call 911 on the second occasion as it happened because i was in the merge of 2 highways in the evening. My car also had downshifting problems where the downhill decent control would come on out of nowhere causing my car to buck forward and drop down to second gear. The dealership again saidthat is could not be duplicated 3 times before they finally found something and then it kept happening anyway. My transmission let go on the highway at just over 60k miles and then my engine lining shifted spewing oil only about 2 months after. The dealerships are well aware of the poor quality of these vehicles and yet, they sell and re-sell them to the unsuspecting consumers. I have a lawyer and will be suing lr for everything i can, including lost wages, emotional and physical distress, and anything else that can be tied into my two year nightmare. I strongly suggest you get these vehicles off the road before someone gets killed. Thank you

I have a 2002 land rover freelander. The car is more trouble than its worth. From the truck not starting, windows rolling up and down when they feel like it, engine coolant leaking, intake manifold problems, misdiagnosed from landrover, the locks don't work.the car basically starts when it wants to, it doesn't need a new starter, or spark plugs or an alternator. When driving the car wont accelerate as a car should it rides bumpy as if the engine is about to drop out. Land rover wont help with anything because they say that the company who made the engines for the truck went out of business. Many people complain about this truck. When i took the car to land rover to see what the ticking noise under the hood was they charged me 200 for a diagnostic and diagnosed the problem wrong. The major problems are the windows rolling down, that's a safety hazard when you have people in the car and have the window lock on yet the window still rolls down. The coolant leaking because once a land rover engine overheats you have to replace the whole engine. The locks don't work meaning you cant lock the vehicle also a safety hazard and the car doesn't accelerate past 30 mph sometimes and its not the transmission.

I have 2002 landrover freelander with less than 35000 miles.i have transmission failure, repeated brake problems, cooling system problems, window and door operator problems, to include the lock on the driver side not been able to be opened with the remote.the hesitate when accelerating up hills.i have had to ship the car back to the states for repair.i am not happy with what i thought was my dream car.the company is not helpful.the dealership that repaired my car was very abrupt when they dealt with me.something needs to be done about this problem vehicle.too many complaints without any remedy.

I was driving on i45 on my way to work, when my 2002 land rover freelander stopped working without any notice. I had to quickly do anything i could to ge out off the freeway with no power. It was one of the scariest days of my life. Thankfully the other drivers noticed that there was something wrong with the car and slowed and i was able to exit. I had to get the car towed to a shop where they told me that i needed a new fuel pump. I got it replaced and it worked well for 2 month and now its leaking fuel. The motor is also leaking antifreeze all over the place. You need to look into this cars. There's to many problems with it and complaints to go along. Thanks

I bought my 02 freelander in march 06 with my fema money.i desperately needed a car after mine flooded in katrina.since my purchase i havehad nothing but trouble with this lemon.i see from the many blogs that i am not the only one.between me and my now expired warranty we've spent well over 5,000.please tell me if there is anything i can do.it has several problems now and is undrivable.i still owe over 7,000 on it.

(1) defrost/heat not work;2) engine overheated;3) replaced heater vac at a cost of $830, old part kept at delear.

Engine temperature spiking.engine sucked a lave into the engine - engine seized.had to rebuild engine - $5500.00.

Coolant system leaked into the engine and cracked the block. Mileage 51,175.

We bought a land rover freelander 9 months ago from a used car dealership.2 weeks ago we noticed the heating gage going up and down and we needed a lot of coolant.yesterday, the engine failed and we were told we need a new engine.according to the mechanic it was a problem in the heating system because the coolant is leaking into an unknown area.landrover says since we didn't buy it from them, they will not help us.in order to file a complaint, we must tow the car to the dealership, pay the dealership to examine the care and then want 2 to 6 months for an engine, possibly a transmission as well to be order.they are backordered nation wide.the car has on 40,000 miles and has had good maintenance regularly.

We had just had our car in for servicing prior to a longer drive. While we were driving at highway speeds, our car accelerated without warning. The engine "revved" without any increase in speed. Once home, contacted our dealership where they proceeded to tell us that we would require a new transmission when we were only just out of warranty. They could not tell us what the cause of the problem was - only that it would cost upwards of $6000 to fix it by replacing the transmission. Prior to this, our dealership had our land rover freelander for 4 weeks fixing other known problems such as the coolant system, again, just out of warranty for a fix of over $3000; once it was returned, the engine light came back on immediately (i.e. On our way home from picking the car up) - i returned immediately with the vehicle and was told that the engine block had been cracked which would require an additional $2000 plus in repairs (although they did discount us on this repair - more than likely because they had caused it).we have had nothing but difficulty with this vehicle. The issues began almost immediately from the date of purchase. Additionally, the land rover service people are less than helpful. I believe they are deceptive, arrogant, and lack the knowledge and skill required to fully service a vehicle. I have gone through three different dealerships to locate someone whom i trust to service this vehicle; finally, now that the care is out of warranty we will be going to a local repair shop where they were able to walk me through what was wrong with the vehicle and fix the problem.

I have a landrover freelander 2002. I have had the car for a year. 2 months after getting the car it needed a head gasket with only 87,000 miles on it. From what i've heard mine lasted longer than most. I had to put 2000,00 into it right after putting 4000,00 as a down payment. The repair shop said that landrover recommended it get a new motor but the warranty comp. Wouldn't cover it. A new motor cost about 7000,00. This is going on with hundreds of landrovers, because of the material the motor is made out of. I cant think of one good reason why there should not be a recall on this car. People are making payments on cars they cant even drive. We may be forced to do a voluntary repo so we can get another car. Peoples lives are being destroyed because of this car. Something has to be done.

2002 land rover freelander with only 65,000 miles has had repairs that are beyond what should be normal, including a new transmission at 45,000 miles, two window regulators, multiple coolant leaks, blown head gasket.dangerous on the road, due to stalling out for no reason, and overheating constantly.have had to pay for multiple tows.today, engine overheated in mall parking lot, leaving me stranded.all coolant poured onto the ground.car needs a new engine at only 65,000 miles.

Transmission went out in busy intersection, i was stranded 100 miles from my house. 1 month later cam shaft seal burst while driving. 2 months later engine completely blew while driving.

I have a 2002 landrover freelander and recently i ad to put coolant in the car almost every day.the mechanic states it is a very expensive repair job, if the hose can be found and replaced.the car have been inoperable for about 3 weeks now.i love the freelander, but it appear to be very problematic.

I began experiencing reasonably significant loss of coolant over the last few months.i monitored and refilled every time i saw the level below the minimum level in the overflow tank. Over the last couple weeks i have began noticing what appeared to be solidified oil in the oil cap and am growing very worried that i am heading down the same path that so many 2002 land rover freelander owners have experienced.coolant is clearly leaking into the engine, is mixing with the oil and is in very short order destroying my engine.with 100's of reports of this very same issue it's obvious land rover is aware of the problem and based on the best information i can gather has no solution.they apparently don't even have replacement engines available as the model was discontinued.this makes repair completely impossible.i still owe several thousand on the vehicle.given the accounts of many whose engines have seized while driving i am fearful of driving it.the negative impact of the widespread knowledge of this issue, bad pr, has devalued my freelander to the point that it cannot be sold for what it's supposed to be valued at.i own a vehicle from land rover that does not deserve to be on the streets.to repair it is apparently impossible.selling it can only be done at an extreme financial loss.the issue is a known manufacturing flaw.i believe it's time the dot stepped up and pulled these cars off the street before something very bad happens and holds land rover responsible by compensating all freelander owners for their manufacture of a very, very flawed vehicle.please take action and help take an unsafe vehicle off us roads.

Complained to dealer of overheating 2x's. Each time system was pressure tested and reported ok. 3rd time a problem was detected and parts replaced, to no avail. Now am told that i need a new engine at 46k mi. Water must be added every day to use the vehicle, but the dealer refuses to do repairs because the warranty expired a month ago.

Engine failure.coolant leakage. Engine overheating.the inside of my car became so hot my mother who was riding in the passenger seat passed out.

We have had several incidents with my 2002 land rover freelander type s overheating and check engine light going on, we have regularly taken it to our local land rover dealer to find out the problem.the latest, now august 2011, the coolant was found to be low, and a discussion with the mechanic and the shop person indicated that their is no external leaks, and that the coolant may be leaking into the engine. I was told that the cylinders/heads are made of different materials, and that a gap may have formed there causing the coolant to leak into the engine. I was told that if the coolant continues to leak without any visible signs of external problems, the engine would need to be replaced. We have done all of the routine maintenance as well as thousands of dollars of repairs for the cooling - including multiple thermostats(i believe we are on our fourth one, including the ones under warranty, etc.the latest diagnosis is coolant into the engine and fouling a cylinder.i repeated asked, since we were under warranty, if we had a lemon and have now seen thousands of postings on the internet relating to this problem, with models from 2000 to 2005, the years the car was available in the us. It appears that there are no viable replacement engines available that do not have this same problem since, the vehicle was discontinued in 2005. Based on the information i have gathered, it appears that the engine used in this vehicle was of a faulty design, given the fact that a replacement with out this problem is not available for the record, my vehicle info is as follows: make: land rover model: freelander type s year: 2002 purchase date: 07/2002 i am the original owner, and i purchased this from land rover portland, portland oregon.

Just before major odometer readings of 30000, 40000 etc vehicle loses power. The problem is elevated when the vehicle is turned off and started again.

My 2002 land rover freelander began to overheat while i was commuting from ny to nj via holland tunnel.once out of the tunnel i pulled over to check under the hood. It was severely hot. I added coolant and waited approx 15 minutes before completing the 7 minute commute to my home. The next attempt to start the vehicle failed. I had the vehicle towed to land rover in paramus. The engine was burnt out and i had to have it replaced.

The 2002 land rovers freelanders have overheating problems and causes the engine to lockand cause accidents on the road. All freelander become lemon..the failures happen when the car turns 5ok miles. I found out that thousands of people who bought the same car have had this problem . And dealer won't even supply the parts to fix the problem. The freelanders were rip off and land rover dealership stop making after they found out that the car was a total disaster both for the company and they customers. But still no recalls ordered or service campaign is ordered to save the people who paid top dollar for a lemon.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander.the vehicle would not start.there were no warning indicator lights present.the dealer stated that the head gasket seal malfunctioned and leaked oil into the engine.the engine needed to be rebuilt.the repair was not made.the current and failure mileages were 52,000.

Our 2002 land rover freelander began to over heat at 63,216 miles.we were lucky in that we were at a drive through near our house.we took the car home right away.upon getting an appointment with the dealer, the car was taken in for inspection.the long block needed replacing.this was due to the fact that a cylinder sleeve had slipped.we were able to get the engine replaced.upon further discussion with the dealer, it seems to be known that the engine will fail.this dealer has had owners come in for their 3rd motor all within the warranty.the life expectancy seems to be between 30,000 and about 65,000 miles. We are lucky that we were not anywhere far away or my wife was on business.this seems to be a bad design and right now it looks like land rover will do nothing about it.those whom are out of warranty are out of luck.

I bought a2002 land rover freelander hse with 92,000mi, about 6 months ago, few months after this the check engine light started flashing, so i took it to the repair shop, it turned out to be the thermostat and some related parts, i ended up paying 600 dollars. Then a week after that my transmission felt weird and showed acode in f-4 in the dashboard so i took it to the repair shop and it turns out it is a solenoid, the repair cost will be about another 300 dlls.

We purchased a2002 landrover freelander with 71,000.regular maintenance had been performed on car by original owner and we continued it.in the first 2 year of ownership we had to replace the waterpump twice at $ 1,100 and $565.there was a recall on fuel filter after i had it replaced due to breaking down.now, my wife was driving it and it broken down on side of highway with my 2 year old daughter from almost 2 hours.shop called said needs new engine because block is made of alloy and cylinder sleeve made of steel.when they get hot expand at different rates.after a while this cause the sleeve to drop into lower block and the engine has to be replaced.it cannot be rebuilt.this cost at least $4,000for engine plus repair.do a internet search and see all complaints about this engine.most go out between 50,000 and 100,000 miles.please do something about this and not let landrover get away with taking advantage of us citizen.

My landrover freelander broke down suddenly while driving on the garden state parkway. No warning lights were lit, the gauges were fine, etc. The car stalled while at 65 mph. After taking it to the shop, the car needs a new engine at only 65,000 miles.

2002 freelander. Used 1 quart of oil per 1000 mi. At 12000. New engine was put in.back window would not roll up.sunroof leaks. Coolant blew everywhere.and the worst, while driving on a right curve, steering went out and was nearly a 3 car accident. Dealership wants me to drive it without knowing why it's happening.

I finally got my freelander back from over 4 months of waiting.my 2002 freelander required a new engine after it was found that mud and/or debris had entered my timing belt enclosure and caused my engine to jump time and catostrophically destroy my engine valves and cylinder walls. A specific land rover dealer noted that "mud" was thetotal cause of my engine failure, when in fact it was a 1" x 1" hole in the timing belt enclsoure; this hole is a design flaw or oversight and thus allows any dirt/grime/debris/mud to enter and cause severe damage.freelander never showed visible signs (meter or steam) that it was overheating.insurance has covered this issue under a flood coverage and has fronted over $12,800 for a new engine.i haven't received any loss-use coverage for the 4 months.upon inspection of my new 2003 engine, i found a new plastic piece that now covers the once 1" x 1" hole in the timing belt enclosure.this piece also has a piece number and costs appoximately $6.00.now you can see, a mere $6 item would have saved me and insurance over $13,000.land rover has not initiated a recall or service bulletin to my knowledge; i suspect that this will only be installed on an as needed basis for those drivers who do use their freelander as advertised by land rover.in a recent article in land rover chronicle, it was stated that the 2006 freelander will have a better sealed engine compartment, due to the fact that most drivers are using their vehicles for off-road use (as advertised); they also state that this vehicle wasn't designed to match the discovery or defender.on top of it all, my front axle required replacement due to a new engine install (vibration problems), a new 02 sensor, plus i've noticed a small hand-sized dent on my hood (from closing).i still have problems of some sort since my service engine light it on now.

My 2002 land rover freelander was having cooling leak problems starting at 50,000 miles.it was found that the leaks were caused by brittle heater lines and brittle universal heater joints made out of plastic.the lines failed catastrophically. The lines and joints were replaced costing $50. At 58,000 mi the thermostat had to be replaced because the coolant leak still existed and was leaking from this location. Cost of repair at dealer $1100.at 59,828 mi the engine failed catastrophically.the cause of the engine failure is due to the cylinder liner (sleeve) slipping causing a gap which caused the coolant leak into the engine block.the engine required total replacement.there is no recall against this known problem. Land rover's stance is that they only guarantee the vehicle for 50,000 mi, so they are not responsible for the engine failure.cost of replacement of the engine is $15,000 as quoted from the land rover dealer. Total consumption of coolant was at a rate of 1 gallon per week, with the exception of the catastrophic failure of the heater lines and universal joints.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander. The contact was at a complete stop when the vehicle staled without warning. The oil warning light illuminated. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle several times but to no avail. The vehicle was towed to a local automotive store where the battery was replaced. The contact was still unable to restart the vehicle. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 83,000 and the current mileage was 87,000.updated 10/20/10the consumer stated the issue has been settled with landrover. Updated 10/21/10

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander.while driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled.the engine failed to restart after several attempts.there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel.roadside assistance was called to the scene and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic.the technician stated that the failure was related to the cylinder and pistons.the vehicle is currently at the repair shop and has been there for one month waiting on the replacement parts.the technician discovered that the parts were discontinued by the manufacturer and the vehicle cannot be repaired.the contact stated that the vehicle has been repaired every month for one year for other defects prior to this recent failure.the vin was unknown.the failure and current mileages were 93,000.

I had my car for less than a year when the radiator/check engine light went off.i brought it to the dealership and said the oil was leaking into the coolant (something like that.. I know nothing about cars).they had my car for a couple of weeks to fix the problem which i was told by their service manager at the time was a manufacturing problem with all land rover freelanders of 2002 and 2003.i browsed the internet for more information, and sure enough, my car wasn't the only one with this kind of problem.thankfully, when i had originally purchased the car, i had also purchases their extended warranty.but the warranty runs out in 2010, and i'm sure i'll continue to have this problem.i want to sell my car, but i can't justify selling a car that i know has so many problems.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander.while driving, the heat shut down inside the vehicle.the dealer stated that her heater coil failed.the contact took the vehicle to a different mechanic because it was out of warranty.the heater coil was repaired.approximately ten months later, the vehicle failed inspection.the mechanic performed a diagnostic but was unable to determine the cause of failure.as the inspection was being performed, the vehicle lost all power and would not restart.the vehicle was towed to the dealer who disassembled the engine and removed the head gasket.she left the vehicle at the dealer and a few days later, the dealer stated that the engine was completely dead.the dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure and stated that nothing could be done because the vehicle was out of warranty.the federal trade commission would not help either.the current and failure mileages were 61,034.

I have a 2002 freelander that i bought new in 2002.i have had nothing but problems with it.most recently the truck was undriveable for several months at the beginning of 2008 due to overheating.finally saved enough money to take it and have it repaired.have driven it for 5 months and am again losing coolant.have paid several thousand dollars for repairs due to overheating and other issues over the last year.now, the right rear passenger window motor is dead.like many others who own these vehicles, the transmission had to be replaced.there are clunking noises when it is put in gear.there is an electrical gremlin that makes the rear window go up and down for no reason.i have had the sunroof stuck open and had that fixed.the motor was tapping constantly and the dealer told me the sound was normal.an independent mechanic repaired the tapping noise which was the intake manifold.my truck has been out of warranty and i'm out of money.

2002 land rover freelander. Engine replaced at 56,000 miles, it is once again in shop for engine problems at 79,000 miles. Fuel pump replaced at 70,000 miles. 5-6 batteries have been replaced since owned car in 2005 and no one knows problem. This car has been in the shop at least 10 times for extended lengths since i've owned it. I have kept up with all oil changes and have taken very good care of this car. Everytime i research it, i find nothing but complaints a mile long. I believe there to be a serious problem with this car, and think that something should be done for the unfortunate owners of them.

My coolant tank has leaked, my water tank has cracked. None of my safety lights flashed ever, so i drove without any knowledge of the problem and somehow destroyed the engine. Apparently i need a new engine for a car that only has 65,000 miles on it, and the safety lights are not lit.

2002 land rover freelander. Transmission failed at 45,000 miles. Catastrophic engine failure at 55,000 miles. Vehicles stopped dead in the middle of rush hour traffic. Mechanics at the land rover dealership said that 100% of the freelander model had the same transmission & engine failures.

My 2002 landrover freelander's engine failed at around 70,000 miles without any warning from the vehicles warning light system and just as the vehicle's original 5 year warranty ended. The dealers repair shop attributed the engine failure to overheating.due to the manufacture discontinuing manufacturing this engine's the dealer had to locate a "rebuilt" engine as a replacement. The total cost of the "rebuilt engine and labor was an astounding $7,500.00. Due to the high incident of this particular engine failing and the manufacturer not making the engine any longer it took around 3 months to procure a replacement "rebuilt" engine and install it. Also, the sunroof motor and the rear passenger window motor both failed and had to be replaced at a cost of around $1,200.00. My dealer recommended that i join a class action law suite if i could find one dealing with this vehicle's clear lemon qualities. I understand from other freelander owners the next thing to go will likely be the transmission. All of this leaves me with very little confidence in the vehicle's safety or reliability. I feel the out of pocket expenses for this engine replacement are unwarranted and should be the responsibility of the manufacture. On behalf of all freelander owners who have had to replace the engine of this car please issue a recall of the engine and force the manufacture to take responsibility for their failure to produce and/or usea sound piece of equipment in this vehicle. Thank you.

Engine failure.

2002 land rover freelander - over a 2 year period repeatedly took the car to land rover dealer for missing coolant - car fails to drive april 2006 - informed engine needs to be replaced - replaced engine july 2006 - ~8 dealer servicing including ~5 for engine related issues over the next one and half years - car fails to drive three times in 2 months - taken to land rover dealer for diagnosis each time of failure - told engine needs to be replaced june 2008 - land rover customer care center / service contacted repeatedly with escalation to a supervisor - land rover will not take any action to help resolve customer issue around defective engines - stand by 12 month warranty - one car, 2 engines failed/defective over 5 years ownership - manufacturer refusing to acknowledge product defects, take responsibility and assist customer to make good on subsequent product liability.

Engine failure-check engine light appeared & slow acceleration, upper intake of engine had to be replaced at 51,000 miles, dealer not willing to cover due to regular vehicle maintenance not done at dealership, this is a violation of the magnuson-moss act.

At less than 40,000 miles i needed to have my transmission replaced and less than 50,000 i needed to have the engine replaced because of a headgasket problem.also many other problems with the vehicle but these were the major ones.

I took my vehicle to landrover when i noticed a loss of power in engine & tapping noise while it was in warranty. A few times landrover classified my problem as the throttle, which happened to be a recall item.once they did the "recall" repair on the throttle in 4/05, i took it back a few days later because there was no change after the initial "recall repair". Than i was told it was a common problem among all freelanders.now that the vehicle is out of warranty, i learned about a tsb that came out a year after i reported my problem for my identical problem that existed than and now that landrover tech's misdiagnosed, mistaken or ignored for something else. They are clever enough not to include what the customer complaint is on the repair ticket & only include what they did.the loss of power is unpredictable and is a hazard that landrover is fully aware of per the tsb listed below.it's disturbing that the repairs done to my vehicle under "recall" never fixes the problem.the roof & pillars recall was fixed twice when in warranty and brokeyet again and remains broken.landrover now wants to charge to fix it again.why, the fix doesn't work.the vehicle hasn't stopped yet, eventually it will get to the point where i can't drive it because of the unpredictable behavior.kv6 variable intake manifold system(vis) motor diagnostic aidno: 19/01/06/nasfgn 310-00ref: 19/03/03/nasta02tb01, ta021901, ta031901issue: 1date: 26 june 2006.

After several incidents with my 2002 land rover freelander type s overheating, i took it to my local land rover dealer to find out the problem.the coolant was found to be low, and a discussion with the mechanic and the shop person indicated that their is no external leaks, and that the coolant may be leaking into the engine.i was told that the cylinders/heads are made of different materials, and that a gap may have formed there causing the coolant to leak into the engine.i was told that if the coolant continues to leak without any visible signs of external problems, the engine would need to be replaced.i have 57,500 original miles on this vehicle, and all required maintenance has been done.it is now out of manufactures warranty, and i do not have an extended warranty.i have seen thousands of postings on the internet relating to this problem, with models from 2000 to 2005, the years the car was available in the us.it appears that there are no viable replacement engines available that do not have this same problem since, the vehicle was discontinued in 2005.based on the information i have gathered,it appears that the engine used in this vehicle was of a faulty design, given the fact that a replacement with out this problem is not availablefor the record, my vehicle info is as follows:make:land rovermodel:freelander type syear:2002purchase date: 07/12/2002i am the original owner, and i purchased this from a land rover dealer in simsbury, ct.

I have had many problems with my 2002 freelander. Mainly related to engine over-heating which causes coolant to evaporate and also the coolant leaks into the engine.i mentioned this problem with the dealer when the vehicle was in warranty, but then they simply refused to take care of the core problem which is the engine.this engine over-heating resulted in spoiling the a/c blower and heater core, and also i was left stranded in the middle of no-where 4 times.and each time i had to tow the vehicle ($150 each time) and the only response from dealership was to keep adding more coolant.i am now out of warranty and not sure what do i do with this vehicle.i cannot use this to go anywhere (it can fail anytime), don't feel like cheating somebody selling this car.i am totally clueless and need help to the core issue resolved, which i think is engine.

The car is just poorly designed and a disaster.despite our regular maintenance at manufacturer's dealers & at normal intervals, the car's engine & transmission failed.repair costs readily exceeded the value of the vehicle.all with less than 65,000 miles.land rover & ford were un-willing to assist in any way.we are out of the car and will not purchase lr or ford products in the future.

I purchased this suv with only 14,000 on it with the remaining factory warranty.at 21,000 the suv engine left me stranded on the interstate 2 hours from home.it had to be towed.land rover fixed it, $13,000 they found metal shavings in the engine at 21,000 miles. The warranty covered the engine, but they charged me $80 for an oil change~you have to put new oil in a new engine~~but they made me pay for the oil!they navigation system screen went black and keeps going off, they said the warranty would pay for it, never heard back and the warranty is out last month.they fixed a recall on the carb the last oil change.the brakes ground down to the rotors, had to replace them at 20,000.new engine left me stranded in another state with my little girl in the middle of no where with no cell service.needed towed again.the anti-freeze hose had come loose from engine, caused it to shut down...had to fix, no warranty, car had 52,000 miles (2,000 over)last week i was taking my daughter to school and smelled gasoline very strongly, after having to idle in behind the buses in front of her school. With children walking by, and blocked in by another mom, it nearly exploded!the gas gauge had went down 1/2 tank, it started to smoke and nearly got fire.they said i was very lucky to have not been in a fire with my daughter.over 3/4 tank of gas had leaked out under the hood of the suv and if something would have sparked it, my daughter & i would not be here, and maybe not the children in front of the school standing by buses or on bus next to suv.they also found oil plug was leaking after land rover dealer changed oil at $80 and never put seal back on plug.almost burnt engine up again.right now it is sitting at repair shop, land rover accidentally sent them a wheel bearing last week instead of the part to fix gas leak, i have a rental car for over 1 week now. I have no idea how much the cost will be to get it fixed this time,i'm pretty much screwed.

Land rover freelander 2002 transmission issues, traction control light stays on and check engine light. Transmission and engine issues galore, currently only have 54,000 miles on the vehicle.

At 48,000 miles, i'm being told i have to replace the engine since coolant is leaking into the oil. This is the latest in a long line of problems with this vehicle. On my 2002freelander se

I owned a 2002 land over freelander, since 2006. It has been having engine problem 12 months after purchasing. I have contacted and interviewed other consumers with the same vehicle and issues. When i contacted land rover, they refused to do anything about it. The engine first over heats, it then has a cackling sound in the head, the service engine sign is always on. When i take it to the dealers for diagnostics, one employee said that these model vehicles come in for this problem very often. The vehicle was estimated to cost me over $5,000 to repair. This was not feasible being that there was a $70,000 payment left on the car. I had to turn it in to the bank but still stuck with a payment on a car that i can't even drive and was manufacturer's and dealers defect.

According to the dealership in charlotte, nc overheating is a known defect due to inadequate engine exhaust fan.

The remote control completely stop opening the drivers door.landrover was not receptive to my complaints.the regional guys still have not return my call about the matter.

When turning on air conditioner water sprayed out through the vents. Vehicle was taken to dealer, but situation is not remedied. Please add further details.

A/c unit is not adequate to cool car without being able to turn off reicrculation button, as per owner's manual reccomondations.does not allow proper ventilation and could possibly cause driver fatigue during long haul operations due to lack of fresh air being introduced into the cabin.also on hotter/sunny days you must keep fan turned up to a high level in order to gain any cooling affect thus causing noise fatigue.system is overall ineefective and has been verified by several owners on bbs's.have had system checked by dealer for proper operation and it checked out ok.

I strongly urge the modification of the brake light and turn signal configuration on current freelanders in the united states. The placement of these crucial signals is located in an unexpected and less visible location to other drivers .i have been involved in a rear-end collision (and have had many close calls) on the highway likely because the drivers behind me do not notice my brake lights illuminating. The brake lights could easily be moved to the current fog light location and the turn signals could be moved to where the reverse lights are now located - this would provide a cost effective solution to this serious safety concern.

The brake lights on this vehicle are designed very poorly.i have been pulled over twice for faulty brake lights.i have also almost been rearended.due to the set up of these lights.this is not a safe vehicle and i will not let my pregnant wife and kids ride in it.dt

Land rover freelander hse 2002:at 70,000 miles, transmission halts, seizing, rapid rpm jumps; less than one month later, the transmission completely died.inoperable car towed and transmission rebuilt at private shop.five miles from shop after pickup, car seized and died.now, an additional repair of the "transfer case," which we were told caused the transmission failure.now, service engine soon light on; battery keeps dying.rapid depreciation, frequent repairs of brakes, brake pads, headlights, etc.complained to manufacturer 2/23/2007.car inoperable as of this date.don't know what to do -- owe more than it's worth, cannot get full nada/kbb trade in value...frustrated and disappointed.and out of money.

The brake lights on the 2002 land rover freelander (which we just purchased) are extremely misleading to anyone traveling behind the vehicle are bound to be the cause of accidents, if they havent been already. Although there are light clusters on each side of the tailgate (as there are on every vehicle in the us), they do not light up when the brakes are applied. Instead, the thin, rectangular lights in the bumper light up. We werent aware of this problem until my wife was pulled over by a connecticut state police officer for faulty brake lights. The dealer where we purchased the car then said they were unaware of the problem, agreed it was confusing, but were "powerless" to fix it because land rover north america says it meets all nhtsa regulations. Although the lights maybe within the 15-72 inch from the road range, the placement of them is deceiving. Ive yet to see any other vehicle in the us with brake lights only in the rear bumper. My fear is that this will not be addressed until something tragic happens because of it. Everyday this isn't fixed is a day we have to drive a vehicle with deceiving brake lights, putting our safety and the safety of those behind us at risk. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to continue driving the vehicle, even though wed rather not. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

I feel the design of the tail lights has caused many close-call near accidents with my freelander. The design is counter-intuitive for the drivers behind me, who expect the light assemblies on the corners of the vehicle to illuminate when braking. The brake lamps are in the bumper, however- which doesn't seem intuitive or sometimes aren't visible to a close-following vehicle. When not illuminated, it's difficult to even see the bumper lamp assemblies exist, yet the corner mounted assemblies are at eye level- but they have no blinkers or brake lamps. Some people have started modifying their own brake lamps in response to this issue! i'd rather have them changed legally than modify my vehicle without dot/nhtsa approval.

Brake lights do not illuminate. Checked fuse, bulbs and wiring. All were operative. Had brake lamp switch replaced. Lights still not operational. (new stop lamp switch was the same manufacturer as the one that is currently under nhtsa investigation.)since new part didn't work, old part was reinstalled and new one returned to dealer. The dealer wants to charge 300.00 just to tell me why brakes won't work and is aware of what has already been tried. Brake lights still not operational.

Both brake lights and rear turn signals are located far low down into the rear bumper; difficult for other drivers to see; could easily cause rearend collisiion.

Land rover, freelander hse 2002. Engine valve leak, 5th cylinder not firing, catalytic sensor went bad, pressure valve leakage. The car stooped all of a sudden. Just crossed the manufacturer's warranty,by 700 miles.

Multiple problems expensive and hard to find parts, fuel pump, thermostat and transmission. Suv stalls in traffic, thermostat leaks constantly and transmission jerks violently in second gear.

Thanks

I have had numerous problems with my 2002 landrover freelander.last month the gasoline broke while driving, spewing out a full tank of gas. This month, on my way for routine service, almost 200 miles away, the transmission went. I had it towed (for the fourth time) to landrover spokane who quoted me a price of 7100 dollars to fix my transmission. This car is just coming up to 55,000 miles.

2002 land rover freelander intake motors. Replaced by owner approx 40k miles ago. I was in a very bad(unrelated) auto accident 22 july. While relatives were available to take me to doctors, etc., i knew i also had a trouble light on the freelander that had to be cleared for state inspection. When they took it to lr of cary i had to replace yet again the entire plenum assembly at a cost of 2k to owner. Advised by dealer that the parts when they receive them are sometimes malfunctioning upon receipt. Possible accident in colo caused by seized intake motors(per lr dealer in colo) numerous complaints of faulty intake motors can be easily found on line.

I purchased a 2002 freelander s in october 2003.the vehicle was a demo model, with approximately 8,000 miles.in the 10 months that i've owned the vehicle, i have had to have brake and rotor work done, and have had to have the fuel pump replaced.i have complained on three separate occassions about the vehicle losing power.i have also had to have the headliner replaced, along with several other small problems.the most recent concern for me is the 3 times in 20 days that the vehicle has had to be towed into the dealership.the fuel pump was "repaired" a few days ago, yet one day after picking the vehicle up from the dealership, the car broke down and had to be towed in for repairs.i am now told that it was a problem with the fuel gauge.the headache of owning this vehicle is too much.i've never had any problems like this with previous vehicles.

1numerous problems over several years, including (but not limited to) sudden loss of coolant and oil.and yesterday, a strong smell of hot oil, and sudden squealing from right, front wheel.2complete loss of engine power.vehicle is no longer drivable. 3contacted landrover.

I bought this vehicle used (landrover freelander)just over a year ago inearly 2007.at the time it had just under 40,000 miles on it and within the first week of having it the sunroof malfunctioned and broke.i contacted the dealer and they referred me to my extended warranty that i had purchased.after going round and round with the dealership and the folks at the lr dealership we got it resolved to the tune of $1,200.00.since then the vehicle has had numerous visits to the lr dealership to be repaired (fuel pump, front end, transmission, etc...). At this point i am considering driving the vehicle until it can run no more and then just letting the bank take it back.i have no choice because he lr dealership basically said the vehicle is junk, even though it looks great and is in great condition for a 2002.what's going on with the sale of these freelanders is nothing less than fraud by landrover and the car dealerships that choose to sell these models used.even if you buy a extended warranty as i did, no one told me i should have had it at the dealership every day and pushing the lr dealership to go through the car with a fine tooth comb to make sure every item is in working order, before the extended warranty runs out.i believe that land rover knows that the freelander has serious issues & at this point they are merely using it as a means to drive revenue sales at their service departments throughout the world.please help, this problem has reached epidemic proportions.will it take a death(s) due to a malfunctioning part(s) on these vehicles before someone takes land rover to task on this lemon of a vehicle.i have three small children and i am scared to death for them to ride with me in this vehicle, but it is our only vehicle and we have no choice.please someone hold land rover accountable for duping the american public.this is similar to the adjustable rate mortgage scam that has put a strangle hold on customers throughout the country.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander.while driving 60 mph, the contact's son was able to open the rear passenger side door while the child safety lock was engaged.the toddler was seated in the rear of the vehicle and properly restrained in a child safety seat at the time of the failure.upon further investigation, it was found that the child safety lock was operating backwards.as a result, the door could be opened from the inside of the vehicle, but not from the outside.there was a recall for the following year, make, and model vehicle; however, the manufacturer stated that his vehicle was not included.the failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 90,000.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander.when the contact attempted to open the tailgate, it would not unlock, regardless if she used the keyless remote or manually attempted to open the door.she also noticed that the front passenger and rear driver side doors would not unlock with the keyless remote.the doors will only unlock manually.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that all of the malfunctioning doors needed the door latches replaced.the vehicle has not been serviced for the failures.the current mileage was 84,000 and failure mileage was 72,000.

Transmission went out in busy intersection, i was stranded 100 miles from my house. 1 month later cam shaft seal burst while driving. 2 months later engine completely blew while driving.

My 2002 freeland landrover is having transmission problems. The f4 lights came on and they are saying i need to get a new transmission. There aren't even 65k miles on the vehicle. I am very disappointed. It seems that everyone is having this problem and something needs to be done.

Just bought the 2002 land rover - freelander 2 weeks ago, it has 68k miles, then its transmission totally failed, it will not go into reverse / backward.also, when it is switching gear, the gear 2 & 3 are very very rough.today, the mechanist told me that the transmission should be replaced.

I just purchased the vehicle from a gentleman. He had purchased the vehicle two years ago at 88,000 miles, and started having trouble with the transmission about two months ago. About three weeks ago the gentleman had the vehicle towed to his service center who then notified him that his transmission needs replacing. I have bought the vehicle and plan to replace the transmission. It does seem a bit early for a two owner vehicle at 110,000 to need a new transmission. It was well cared for not abused.

The car has died again, and is not running.the transmission does not work properly.

2002 land rover freelander s, engine and transmission failure,,,,,,,,,,,

After multiple repairs to my 2002 freelander including multiple window regulator failures. The transmission goes out. Dealer says they cant repair must replace.

Transmission failed, in reverse and then in drive.

2002 freelander se transmission problems at 90,000 miles.

While driving down the street, the transmission seemed to slip.i scheduled a service appointment with the dealer whom stated that the car could still be used.as time went by, the failure became worse, up to the point that you could not depend on the transmission to work safely.we decided to park the car and wait for the day of service. The car was taken in and the transmission was deemed to have failed.the torque converter and all gear clutches had failed.the transmission was replaced.the repair shop did admit that land rover was aware of defective units, but did not make this public.the repair house was supposed to confirm off the old transmission that it was from the bad set and this was the case.our transmission was replaced.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander. While driving 20 mph, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and as the vehicle shifted gears, the contact heard a noise. She then noted a problem shifting gears. The service engine soon light illuminated along with an f4 light. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The vin was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were 50,008.

I have 2002 landrover freelander 4x4 v6. The transmission has went out on it. It has 50,000 miles on it. I took it to the landrover dealership and they said i needed a new transmission and new rails and tracks on the sunroof. The powerlocks are also messed up.

2002 land rover freelander - 72,000 miles:replaced 3 window regulators last year.on my way to work one morning & hill descent light came on,f / 4 light flashes, and it is jerky /jumpy while driving.no one can figure out the problem - 3 land rover dealerships in 5 weeks.my car is now 100 miles away, i was told it was fixed, but when i got there it was still doing the same thing.they looked at it again & i was told i need a new transmission for $4800.for some reason, no one could pick up the problem with the testers.i loved my car but after reading about all the chronic problems i don't know what to do with it.plus, i owe about the same amount as the transmission!i will never buy a land rover again & they should be held responsible for all of these defective vehicles!

2002 landrover freelander tranmission failure.

Land rover freelander 2002. 62 thousand miles and the transmission went out.this is going to cost me around $4,000 to fix. Apparently this vehicle is knownto be a complete piece of crap.

I bought an 02 land rover freelander from a used car dealer and after about a year and a half, at only 60,000 miles, the transmission went out. The car no longer drives. No one will work on it and my only option is to replace the whole tranny for about 4 grand. I still owe a bunch and i just keep shelling out the towing costs to have it looked at. I'm going sell the stupid car and cut my losses. It sounds like there are a bunch of similar cases out there from what i've read online.

I have a 2002 land rover freelander se with 65,032 miles, and i was told the transmission now has to be replaced or rebuilt at a cost between $3500, to $4500. I bought the suv in 2004 with 6,300 miles, and sins then at about 12,000 to 13,000 miles the water pump went out and had to be replaced. Also the on-board computer had to be replaced as will at about 33,000 miles. I called costumer service at land rover and they tolled me they would not do anything for me. I asked them if it was normal for this suv?s transmission to go out at 65,000 miles, they would not answer my question.

*la

Transmission failed causing loss of power and movement.towed to transmission repair shop and had to have the transmission re-built.hill decent light would come on and stay on while driving until engine was turned off for no reason before the failure of the transmission occurred.

2002 landrover freelander. Bought with 4,000 miles from landrover of asheville, nc. Today at 67,000 miles they said the transmission needs to be replaced for 5k. I have had other problems with this vehicle but the sends me over the edge. I have been reading bloggs from other owners who stated having the same problem. What can be done.

Thank you

Thanks

I have only had my 02 landrover freelander for 3 months it has 90,000 miles and the transmission has gone and needs repaired. Of course the dealership doesn't care cause there was no warranty but i see this is common in these vehicles and something should be done.

The consumer was traveling 20 miles per hour when all of a sudden without warning the vehicle stalled. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for an inspection and after 3 times of testing, results showed that the transmission needed to be replaced.

2002 freelander with 65,000 miles - rear window regulator replaced at 55k; now the entire transmission needs replaced.land rover can no longer get the parts, so looking at a re-manufactured one at about $4,000.dealership closed down and there has been no help!

2002 land rover freelander needs transmission replaced at only 55k miles.need help in forcing land rover north america to issue a recall.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander.while driving 5 mph, the transmission gears failed to shift.the dealer stated that nothing could be done and advised the contact to keep driving until the failure recurred.the failure and current mileages were 44,000.

Transmission failure in middle of rush hour traffic, nearly rear ended.less than 60000 miles on vehicle.it lost forward momentum, then slammed into lower gear.rpms jumped. F4 flashed on dashboard. Dealership quoted $5000.00 to replace transmission.february or march 2006 car overheatedrunning errands on a cool day, engine rebuilt completed by dealership to replace thermostat $2000$ as warranty expired in january. Purchased new in january2002, services exclusively at lr dealerships in richmond va, and charlotte nc.anti-freeze odor inside the vehicle within first 3 months.inspected and dismissed by dealership.brake failure, used emergency brake to stop vehicle at less then 8500 miles, three months of ownership.brake pad and rotor replacement required.told itwas driving habits.dealership replaced an updated sensor.sun roof fixed per recall within first year.right door speaker vibration/feedback, new speaker installed, but problem persisted. Told that wasn't an issue.

Transmission started slipping.needs new transmission.

When applyingbrakes at normal conditionsabs light came on intermittently, and there was extended stopping distance.dealer stated braking systemwas defective but they could do nothing about it.also, automatic transmission failed.

Mechanical problems immediately after purchase required 4-5 trips to dealership before they fixed it. I don't' recall the exact problem. Sunroof motor died & had to be replaced. Left rear window regulator died and had to be replaced. Right rear window regulator died and had to be replaced. Broken latch on hood had to be replaced. Check engine light and excessive cranking 6/1/02 and 8/17/02 dealership cleared codes no repairs. Service engine soon light and excessive cranking 9/17/02, dealership replaced leaking fuel pump. Service engine soon light and shifting problems 3/2006, dealership sent me home no repairs. Service engine soon light and car lost power while driving, throttle body had a short and dealership replaced. Service engine soon light and delay in shifting from 2nd to 3rd 9/1/08. Have not had this diagnosed yet. Suspect bad solenoids or transmission failure.

Transmission broke at 50,050 miles. Needed full replacement.

I took my 2002 freelander into british motors in san francisco in march of 07 with 55,000 miles on it and asked for the 60,000 mile tune up. They said no - sold me new brakes and tires instead and did an oil change. I only drive 5,000 miles a year and so i knew it would be a while before i hit 60k. I tool the car in when i had 63,364 miles on it and they did the tune up. There were many sloppy things that happened during this time but the bottom line is that after the tuneup the transmission failed - and then they said i was over the limit for the miles and voided the warranty. I have since read about hundreds of other freelander owners who have had the same or similar problems.when they change the transmission fluid the transmissions sometimes fail. I had a friend who has the exact same thing happen only she drove a range rover.british motors blamed land rover and land rover customer complaint dept is useless and does nothing.this is happening to so many land rover owners that it is appalling and something needs to be done. The freelander should have been recalled - and those of us driving it should have been warned about engine problems and what could happen when the transmission fluid is changed in routine tune ups.i paid $2,300 to get the transmission repaired so i could get my car out. I have filed a complaint with the bureau of automotive repairs in ca. This whole thing is a scam and has cost me a lot of money and time.from googling: freelander engine and transmission problems -- ii see that hundreds and hundreds of others have had the same problem and that very little gets done about it! 1

At less than 40,000 miles i needed to have my transmission replaced and less than 50,000 i needed to have the engine replaced because of a headgasket problem.also many other problems with the vehicle but these were the major ones.

Defect in automatic transmission:hard shift between 2nd and 3rd gear.dealer and manufacturerhave yet to recognize and acknowledge said defect.land rover freelander owners have all experienced this problem and are beginning to complain and it was recommended to notify the nhtsa of same.

Transmission failure at 75,000 miles. Excessive check engine light warnings. Bad sensors. Engine noise.

I have a 2002 landrover freelander. Ran great at first. About 2 weeks later, the check engine lights came on, the downhill decent warning light, and the odometer display was flashing f and 4. Upon driving in this condition, we found that the gears were slipping and made a loud clunking sound.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 65 mph the vehicle shifted from fifth gear to neutral without warning and the reverse failed when attempting to park.the vehicle was towed to a local independent repair shop.they replaced the automatic transmission.the manufacturer was alerted.

A car made to break down on you. I bought a landrover freelander 2002 and barely drove it...it had been a leased vehicle and was well taken care of...however...it broke down as soon as i got it. First it was a coolant problem, it overheated while i was driving it home from work. I live 5 miles from work. The first year i bought the car i put less than 1000 miles on it and had already brought it in at least 3 times for problems. The first was the coolant, and then i brought it in a few times since it constantly had this feeling as if the breaks were being applied. It has a hill decent button that would come on and i thought that was part of the problem, but it still did it regardless. It's as if the breaks were on and were stuck. And every time i brought it to landrover they said they couldn't find a problem....of course not. And then i had it in there and they said they had a bunch of "strange" codes pop up they hadn't seen before so they just "wiped" them as the man said. ??? he didn't bother to figure out why??? now...my car has been sitting for almost 3 years since i couldn't afford to fix the broken transmission. I have a total of 55350 miles on it..bought it at 43603 in 2005. All i see all over the internet is how these same problems have kept occurring and no one was held responsible for all the work and money that has to go into for fixing this....it doesn't make sense thata company as large as landrover would be able to make a car that was bound to break down...and not have to fix the problems??? it ends up coming out of the pockets of the poor consumers who at this point are all on their own. I'm exceptionally disappointed. This was the first car i ever bought...i thought it was safe and i was having a baby 4 months later. All this vehicle has done is make my life more difficult. Thank you landrover...i will never ever buy a car from you...or anything you make. You have no honor not to take care of your obvious mistakes in the creation of these cars.

Land rover freelander 2002 transmission issues, traction control light stays on and check engine light. Transmission and engine issues galore, currently only have 54,000 miles on the vehicle.

1numerous problems over several years, including (but not limited to) sudden loss of coolant and oil.and yesterday, a strong smell of hot oil, and sudden squealing from right, front wheel.2complete loss of engine power.vehicle is no longer drivable. 3contacted landrover.

Multiple problems expensive and hard to find parts, fuel pump, thermostat and transmission. Suv stalls in traffic, thermostat leaks constantly and transmission jerks violently in second gear.

My 2002 land rover freelander left my family and i stranded on the highway twice and both events were very costly.i own the vehicle 16 months.the first break down occurred in hartford, al when the vehicle was towed back to the nearest dealer jax, fl 300 plus miles.a battery cable was replaced.the vehicle reached 48,000 miles when i made a formal complaint of engine noise and requested the dealership (mantheny jaguar and land rover) perform the appropriate services to include noting any problems considering the warranty expired at 50000 mil.after 50000 the vehicle literally began to break down mechanically.one noted cost of several was the replacement of the transmission at a cost of $4800.00 to repair.i believe any vehicle that has a major break down of this nature, the amercian consumers have a right to know.the free lander is costly and performs poorly stacked up against american made products.

At 40000 miles the vehicle started to become unstable because of a "wobble" on the front wheels.it was determined that the drivetrain bearings were bad.my wife had trouble controlling the vehicle and i immediatly had it in for service.

In 2006 my water reservoir busted in my 2002 freelander freezing the engine with a repair cost of over $7,000. Last week my transmission started slipping and now i have been informed that the transmission is gone without any leakage.

Thank you

*la

I have a 2002 landrover freelander with 50,000 miles, and i am on my 4th set of brake pads and rotors.i drive primary back and forth to work, which is no more than 15-20 miles each way, so i feel that the braking system for the freelander was designed improperly and the company should be responsible.i would warn everyone, not to buy this suv.

Abs failure, land rover freelander 2002, land rover houston refused to work on vehicle even though it was purchased there. Service manager bruce watkins asked to tow the vehicle from his dealership.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's brakes overheated.the abs warning light illuminates to make the driver aware of the problem.when the brakes were pressed at normal speeds, there was a slight chirping noise.the vehicle was taken to a service dealer but the dealer could not replicate the problem.

When applyingbrakes at normal conditionsabs light came on intermittently, and there was extended stopping distance.dealer stated braking systemwas defective but they could do nothing about it.also, automatic transmission failed.

I own a 2002 freelander with less the 18,000 miles. Brake pads went from good to grinding metal in one day with no signs. I bought extended warranty for $3,000. Since the truck has under 50,000 miles land rover will not cover. What kind of service is this. Road side assistance did a great job picking up my truck but i was informed that my local land rover has no cars for loaners due to another facility closing in eden prairie minnesota. So here i sit with no wheels. If this is not going to be repaired under any of my warranties you will see a lawsuit brought against land rover. Look at the complaints on this truck for brakes, these are factory defects. You should not have to replace brakes and rotors every 10,000 miles.

While applying the brake pedal, the consumer heard a loud squeaking noise. Then, thevehicle vibrated uncontrollably.

Its really a 2001 freelander, there is no 2001 freelander in the search options....but anyways i havent had any problems at all with my car until about 16500 miles and my left rotor started grinding so i had to get both of my front pads replaced and the drums were fine.i dont think that the pads should go out this soon, i still have the original tires on, and they will need to be replaced in the next year, but the pads went out so soon.everything is fine now....its a great car.

At 1000 miles of driving, vehicle started to make noise after warming up. Dealer replaced froont rotors and pads with in two weeks. Vehicle has been on two ocassions at the dealer and the problem still reocurring. Provide further information. Ts

Vehicle has 19,000 miles. Brought into dealer for emissions work. Dealer stated i needed new front brakes (pads & rotors). Rotors are deeply grooved. I expressed concern that at under 20k miles i needed new rotors. Was told this was "regular wear and tear" and not covered under warranty. Dealer stated that land rover needs their rotors replace every 10-15k. I consider this excessive wear and tear. Dealer will not cover under warranty. I have numerous other issues with car & dealer as well. *nlm

The 2002 freelander s i own has very poor brakes. At 12000 miles or so i took the vehicle in for some other problems and was told the brakes had to be replaced. I want to note that land rover compensated me for the cost of the brake pads because there were other front end problems. Today i took my freelander in and the dealership gave me an identical 2003 freelander. The brakes were somewhat better and the freelander had 11000 miles. I am hoping the dealership can fix this problem. I also have had several instances where the car lurched forward on its own. I thought it was my driving until i saw other entries on this site. One other item is that my 2002 freelander a/c blower is very loud. I noticed that the 2003 freelander i am driving today the blower is somewhat normal. The speakers in my and two other landrover freelanders are vibrating due to the lack on insulation in the door frames.

We were traveling about 35 mph when we had to make a sudden and hard stop as a car almost pulled out in front of us.the right front tire moved back about three inches and was rubbing against the tire well. The brakes were making a horrendous noise.we had to be towed to a repair shop.the right front control arm that supports the tire was corroded and rusted out to the point it collapsed and bent.we were lucky we weren't in a serious accident.if we had been traveling at highway speed i don't know what would have happened.it cost $426.00 to be repaired.the repair shop gave me the defective part so i could contact land rover as they said this never should have happened.i contacted land rover and emailed them pictures of the part.they said they couldn't investigate further without having the car shipped to the united kingdom.can you believe that!i have the part and would be happy to send it to the nhtsa.i am sure there are other freelanders out there being driven with this same problem and they are serious accidents just waiting to happen.

May 26, 2005 while driving on a city street in orlando florida, the steering on my 2002 freelander s failed.i had the car towed to the dealer in orlando.on may 27, 2005 i was informed by the chief landrover technician that the bolts holding the steering column on the left side had sheered off.in later discussion i was informed that this has happened before.on june 7 i was informed by the senior technician that he could not safely repair the vehicle.on june 9 i was informed by the supervisor at customer service land rover america that a regional techinical director would have to determine if it could be repaired.i had no control on the vehicle at the time of the incident.i had been on the florida turnpike less than three hours prior to that in a rain storm avoiding semi tractor trailers.had this occured at that time i would not be filing this report.

The power steering system in my 2002 land rover freelander failed completely a week ago without any warning while i was driving on the street.

The contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander.while slowing down and turning at 10 mph, the steering rack made a loud crunching sound and the contact lost total steering control.the dealer stated that the rack and pinion failed.the rack had been replaced the previous year.the vehicle was repaired.the vin was unavailable.the current and failure mileages were 82,558. Updated 01/09/08.*ljthe consumer stated when returning to land rover dealer in knoxville they stated the vehicle had been in an accident, however the consumer body shop confirmed infact it had not been in an accident but the rack and pinion failed. Updated 12/12/07

After the steering system failed completely a week ago (reported separately, odi# 10173809), the land rover dealer in san francisco replaced the rack and pinion assembly.within 2 hours after i got the car back, the electric system failed completely while i was driving and the car stopped in the middle of traffic.

2002 land rover freelander has problems with faulty cam sensor, faulty sunroof, transmission and battery.*mrthe battery and strutswere replaced. The driver's side window would not close or open easily, so the dealer replaced the regulator.the vehicle overheated. The engine light illuminated and different componets were replaced to try and rectify the problem.

Engine will stall when vehicle is on an incline, in dive gear, and allowed to roll back. Also, if vehicle is allowed to rollback and brakes are applied, vehicle will stall. Dealer says that this is a "safety feature" and that all same model vehicles does the same thing. If this is indeed a "safety feature," then brakes should have automatically engaged when the engine stalls. This is not the case, however as the vehicle will continue to rollback with the stalled engine.*la

Dealer can't fix and has returned car to me.at a loss as to what to do at this time.dt

Thanks

At 2mph approaching parking space car lurched forward over curb and headed right at building.my foot was not in contact with the accelerator when this happened.fortunately, no one was on the sidewalk and i was able to stop the car two feet in front of.

For no apparent reason, the vehicle will suddenly lunge forward while at a stop. This has happened several times since i have owned the vehicle over the last 3 weeks. The first time, it did so while stopped, waiting for another vehicle to pass before entering the roadway. Suddenly, without warning, the vehicle lunged in front of the oncoming car, and i couldn't stop it, not matter how much brake pressure i applied. I ended up having to release the brake and drive across the road to avoid impact with the other vehicle, crashing my vehicle into some bushes. I verified there was no contact between the accelerator pedal and carpet or mat. The second time, i slowed coming into a round about, waiting for another vehicle to pass. As the vehicle lunged forward, it was on a collision course with the car right in front of me in the circle, but having had the first accident, i instinctively pressed the brake pedal as hard as i could, and reached over and disengaged the transmission from drive into neutral, avoiding the accident. The vehicle revved to over 4000 rpm before tapping the accelerator pedal to bring it back down to normal speed. This happened one more time with no other vehicle around. This is extremely dangerous.

I have replaced four window regulators in my 2002 land rover freelander and just now realized that i am about to replace the fifth.the cost is outrageous but the poor design is absorb.each time the regulator broke it stuck in an open position leaving me no option but continue to have it repaired.

After multiple repairs to my 2002 freelander including multiple window regulator failures. The transmission goes out. Dealer says they cant repair must replace.

In dec '05 i had the right rear window of a 2002 land rover freelander fail to operate.it was two days before the warranty expired, and covered.in november '06 the left rear window failed to operate.the vehicle on has 43k miles but is now out of warranty due to years.both were a result of a poor cable operating system, and is a known common problem according to the land rover dealer.

My land rover freelander has had 2 engine failures under 50k mi., the first at 26k and the second24k later. 2 sunroof replacements, 2 side window repairs, 1 overheating incident, and the car just runs hot all the time, with hot coolant smell.

2002 freelander with 65,000 miles - rear window regulator replaced at 55k; now the entire transmission needs replaced.land rover can no longer get the parts, so looking at a re-manufactured one at about $4,000.dealership closed down and there has been no help!

2002 land rover freelander experienced a vehicle fire.*mrthe consumer addressed dealership several times, land rover told him that the vehicledid not meet the mexico lemon law guidelines and they were not in any position to repurchase the vehicle. The consumer also complained about other problems with the vehicle such as electrical problems, the rear passenger door did not unlock with the remote, drivers rear seat did not fold, the rear window did not go up when it was cold and the drivers seat was squeaky. The consumer had made numerouscomplaints to the dealership before the fire occurred.

I bought a freelander in 2002. It was brand new. I have had so many troubles with the vehicle. The one that is currently being worked as a lemon law case is the sun roof. I have had it break for the 5th time now. They have replaced it once and swapped parts the other 3 times and still nothing will fix it. I am currently working with my local state office of consumer affairs to try and remedy this issue. They currently are working on the 5th breakage today. Not sure what they will do to try and fix that issue.not to the mention the breaking system that is a nightmare. I had to replace the brakes at 30000 after they dug into the rotors. The downhill decent light comes on with the traction control light for no reason. The brain for the cruise control went out. This car is a constant headache.

Power sun roof motor failed for the second time within 2 years.service guy at dealership claims they are replacing these motors every year or so.my warranty runs out in less than 6,000 miles.shouldn't this be covered even after warranty is up.i thought maybe there might a recall, if this is happening so often.
