The "spiral cassette" on my 2000 land rover discovery has failed three times (about every 30,000 miles or two years).when this happens, the srs light comes on and i have been told that my airbag srs is not functional.i have had it replaced and not "tested" the air bag.it has now failed again.this seems to be a defective design or consistently defective manufacturing which leads to failure of a vital safety system.i would like you to investigate to determine the extent of this problem and whether or not a recall is necessary.i believe the part is "yrc100350rotary cassette"

Vehicle struck a chevrolet astro head on traveling at approx. 35 mph.the driver and passenger air bags did not deploy, and the seat belts did not lock.driver suffered hand and foot injuries.the front passenger was thrown forward fracturing the left eye orbit on the rear view mirror.the middle back passenger was flung forward and thrown back, causing a shoulder injury, the second back seat passenger was in a car seat and suffered from just the force of the impact.**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****760757

Abs, hill decent control (hdc) and traction control (tc) warning lights came on simultaneously. Web search indicates that a lot of people with 1999 and 2000 land rovers have this problem. Land rover says there is no recall.

Various warning lights activated including abs light, indicating failure of the systems on my 2000 land rover discovery ii. Privately retained mechanic identified the ecu as the problem and also located a recall notice regarding this problem. Local land rover dealership stated that the recall was not valid and that "they put these on the internet all the time." land rover north america was contacted via e-mail and telephone message and has not responded. I purchased the vehicle new and the only recall i have recieved concerned the accelleration cable shortly after i purchased the vehicle in 2000. Apparently the local dealership finds nhtsa recalls as "things on the internet" not requiring any action. This is probably to be expected from our local dealership. However, the non-response from land rover north america was unexpected.

While changing lanes on the highway, the top of the vehicle began to sway from side to side and caused the driver to lose control of the steering.the vehicle traveled away from the pavement, onto the right unimproved shoulder, and collided with a large tree.the vehicle immediately burst into flames and continued to burn until the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.most of the vehicle and all personal belongings were lost in the fire.

The contact owned a 2000 land rover discovery ii. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power and smoke filled the cabin. After stopping the vehicle, flames appeared under the hood. The fire department was called to the scene and extinguished the fire. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.

I have a 2000 land rover discovery, which i love and despite that my vehicle has been in the shop many times, (almost every few months) i still love my truck, so i bought my husband one also, he has a 2001 land rover, but just recently i had to have my vehicle towed to the dealership.and i was told my engine sized and i have to replace the heads or the complete engine, this was all caused from a coolant leak in my throttle body, and the vehicle never gave a warning that my engine was running to hot or to cold, that is why there is a gage on the dash to provide this information. And now my husband has a 2001 land rover discovery and he is have the same problems, vehicle only has 79,000 miles on it . And no-one at land rover will help. I am so very upset.

The contact owns a 2000 land rover discovery ii.while driving less than 50 mph, the vehicle began making grinding noises during acceleration.while attempting to make a left turn, the vehicle made a loud noise and drove as if something dropped in the vehicle.she managed to pull off the road and turned off the vehicle.she removed the key from the ignition, but the vehicle continued to move.the contact depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle stopped; however, it began moving again once she released her foot from the brake pedal.the emergency brake was applied and the vehicle stopped.the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but it would not move.she placed the vehicle into drive and reverse, but the vehicle still would not move.the vehicle was waiting to be repaired.the failure and current mileages were less than 115,000. Updated 12/02/08.*lj also the head gasket was cracked. Updated 12/03/08. The transmission failed due to front driveshaft u-joint failure. The driveshaft came apart and because it had nothing to restrain it,it bust a hole in the transmission. Updated 01/15/09.

Purchased vehicle in july it has been looked at and repaired 8 times. Twice to the dealer, the second time they told me it had a cracked engine block and would cost 10,000 to replace the engine(that's what i paid for the car). The first time it was there for an inspection they told me in 2002 they replaced the radiator and 2005 it was there for overheating issues. The coolant fluid would not stay in and kept leaking. It constantly overheated and when i drove it off the lot, before i even got home the check engine light came on. It's being held at a repair shop that the dealer took it to because i can't afford to pay them to fix what they say is wrong with it and i thought the dealer was going to fix it. I myself have spent over 1,000 on it in repairs and have been riding the bus for 3 weeks now.

This vehicle has caused us a lot of inconvenience.the recent accidents (within two weeks of each other) have also caused us to lose confidence in the vehicle, let along the financial losses.we are afraid of driving the vehicle.the manufacturer and the dealer refused to acknowledge the seriousness of the problem simply because there was no injury.twice the rear suspension failed to work, causing the rear side of the vehicle to sink dangerously low.i almost lost my life while driving at approximately 40 mph one sunday morning because the vehicle lost total control: steering wheel froze and the brake failed to work.one week after the vehicle was released from the dealer, the vehicle died in the middle of high way, causing major triffic jam.

Recall 00v142000/engine idler pulley serpentine belt keeps breaking. Problem occurred on two occasions, and no recall notice was received. Please provide any further details.

With vehicle in park position and key removed from ignition, vehicle began to roll backwards crossing the street and hitting a tree. Consumer tried to gain control, but was thrown from vehicle when it hit the tree.upon inspection after the incident, consumer found that when she pulled the key from the ignition the actual key metal had disengaged from the remote sending unit and had remained in the ignition.consumer sustained injuries to back and tail bone.

I own a 2000 land rover discovery.currently, it has 67,000 miles on it and i purchased it at 60,000 miles.shortly after my 60,000 mile check at the dealer, the drive shaft and u joints had to be replaced.without warning, i lost power and had to pull to the side of the road.i am not in warranty, but my local mechanic stated that this is a very common problem with land rovers (even low-mileage ones).i think land rover should recall these vehicles and fix this seemingly ubiquitous problem.

No off-road or deep water driving occurred prior to the incident.at 49,550 miles the transmission became inoperative.vehicle would not move in any gear.subsequently found water in transmission fluid which had damaged transmission parts requiring complete new system.as this system is supposed to be a closed system neither the local land rover service manager nor the aamco technicians have any idea how water could have entered the system.land rover of north america refused any accountability.

Second time transmisson clutch package failed within 4000 miles this was a demo modle.

While driving approximately 25-30 mph, the front drive shaft on my 2000 land rover discovery ii failed causing immediate loss of propulsion. The vehicle is currently waiting to be repaired as a new front drive shaft, including universals and flanges, needs to be installed.

My wife was driving our 2000 land rover discovery ii (with 50,000 miles) on md highway 15 with my three children when she heard a loud noise and the vehicle came to a slow stop.the car was still running, but would not go into gear.she called for a tow and we had the car diagnosed at a local mechanic.when i found out what happened i was absolutely astounded.the vehicles universal joint failed causing the drive shaft to fall from the transfer case and crack the transmission.this car had been serviced and cared for extremely well-it was considered to be in excellent condition.a car with 50,000 miles should not have the universal joint fail.the mechanic was very clear in stating itwas definitely a manufacturing flaw.at the time of the failure, my wife was on the off ramp traveling at 15 miles an hour-if this would have happened at normal highway speed, the outcome would have been quite different; i am lucky no body was hurt.i immediately had it towed to land rover bethesda where i was sure land rover would assist in the repair of such a catastrophic failure.this failure was diagnosed at the land rover dealer as extremely odd and they could not find any reason for the failure.land rover also refused to take any responsibility for the failure.they refused to help with any financial support and showed no concern for my families safety or the safety of any of their customers.this vehicle has a 50,000 warranty, although it was past the 4 years-land rover should have backed up their product and investigated the issue more thoroughly.i was shocked.i have been a loyal land rover customer for 15 years, but i have absolutely no faith in their product after this incident.i will never purchase another land rover again.i am very concerned for any families who own this year and make of vehicle and hope that this will be investigated further.i feel that this could be a possible recall item.

During a cold winter day in january, i turned on my heated seats which burned through the seats leather cover and burned me causing me to nearly lose control of my vehicle.

While driving to work, my seat heater in my leather seat burned through the leather resulting in burn damage to my clothing and my skin on my left leg.

On 7/1/05 i was driving my 2000 land rover discovery series ii on the left lane of i-75 s, in clear weather, on dry pavement, near the 68 mile marker in kentucky(copassengers-my wife & son) enroute to tennessee. Around 1.45 pm traffic ahead started slowing down. I was driving at about 60 mph, and applied the brake; the vehicle immediately started fishtailing and swerving badly. I did not feel the pulsing of the abs; the vehicle swerved across the right lane & shoulder, hit the guard rail on the right, bounced back, & tipped over on to the right (passenger side) on the shoulder. My wife sustained injuries to her right hand & arm due to the tipping over of the vehicle and the shattering of the front passenger window glass, & was taken to a local hospital by ems ambulance. She will undergo hand surgery. The vehicle sustainedserious body damage and was towed to a local towing yard.it was determined not drivable by my auto insurance company appraiser(the vehicle is still capable of starting and moving forward at this time). We (my wife and i ) informed land rover north america in maryland of the incident; they said they could not send anyone out to examine it. They suggested we contact any local land rover dealership with a service center for a detailed examination of the vehicle. The (closest available) lexington land rover dealer/service center refused, citing conflict of interest! the vehicle remains in the towing yard, awaiting a move to a salvage yard soon. No other vehicles/people were involved.we got back home to pennsylvania after the accident. We would like to find out if the abs failure contributed to this accident. Land rover has not made any attempt to contact our auto insurance company, or showed any interest in tacklingthis problem, other than giving us an address to write to. Therefore, nothing has been done to address/correct this problem so far.

In my 2000 land rover discovery 2, as apparently in many others, from time to time, usually after applying the brakes in a routine stop, an alarm chimes and the lights on the dash illuminate showing that the anti-lock braking system is no longer working as well as the hill descent control and traction control system. This is such a common failure that just about every discovery 2 owner knows it by its nickname, the three amigos! clearly a failure in the abs is serious, especially if it results in a valve locking up and disabling the brakes as has possibly happened. The other two functions relate to use in low traction environments, such as snow, and are potentially hazardous as well. I believe this should be a recall issue. This happens every time i drive my discovery, including today (the date i listed below).

Abs tc hd lights all went on and the abs braking system is not working correctly.

No noticable events leading to failure...abs / hdc / trac failure on a 2000 land rover discovery series ii.traction control, abs and hill descent control do not function or function at a diminished level.three lights remain lit on the dash.i do not know what can be done to resolve this unsafe and unexeptable problem.

2000 land rover discovery ii.1st i had the service engine soon light on and after spending almost $600.00 to extinguish the light, i drove the vehicle for (4) days, now all the lights are on. I checked on a land rover forum and they said the abs / tc lights are an ongoing problem with this vehicle and there should be a recall. Everyone is spending a fortune. My land rover just came out of warranty (of course!).

Abs, traction control & hill decent control functions fail simultaneously.abs failure on a 2000 land rover discovery is significant.

Land rover disco 2 2000 abs light comes on, and the abs becomes inoperative. I did speak with a mechanic in my province and they have a lot of problem with this part they changed many of them charging the clients. There is a website specialized on land rover and many many many have the same problem. Yes it is a default in my point of view.

I have a problem with the abs system on my 2000 land rover discovery.from what i've read, this is a very common problem that has not been covered by any warranty or recall.the repair is over $700 to be fixed properly at a dealership.land rover should stand behind their product more, and fix this problem under a recall since it seems to be such a common problem.

The abs, tc and dhc lights all came on at the same time.

My wife and i took our '00 land rover discovery ii to anza borrego, ca for camping. To get to the campsite we had to take unpaved trails of certain difficulty rating. Most of which were rated 4-5 with 10 being the most difficult. All of a sudden, the abs/tc/hdc warning lights came on particularly on certain sections of the trail where there were inclines, ruts and gulleys. We got stuck so many times and even at one point almost tipped one side as only one wheel has power and all three were rather stationary. I couldn't get past trails that even some stock vehicle with adequate clearance can manage and had to be pulled and winched out. On some occasions the vehicle almost slid backwards as three wheels would not spin.i believe this is a safety issue that needs to be investigated and it never happens when on paved roads or highways other than the lights remain lit but all four wheels have traction.

Vehicles brake pedal has begun to sink. The dealer informed consumer that nothing was wrong and that it does not pose a safety problem.consumer feels otherwise.*jg

The contact owns a 2000 land rover discovery ii. While the contact was driving approximately 35 mph the brake pedal was engaged; however, the vehicle continued to accelerate. Immediately the gear was shifted into neutral while force was applied to the brake and then the emergency brake was engaged. The vehicle came to a stop and was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The technician stated the accelerator cable would need to be replaced. There was a recall related to the defect associated with nhtsa campaign id number 02v028000 (vehicle speed control); however, the vin was ineligible under the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact planned to notify the manufacturer of the unintended acceleration. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Cruise control activates without driver input.explanation:cruise control is set (to speed 1) and used then the brakes applied which deactivates cruise control. Car is then accelerated (to speed 2) after stop.occasionally, cruise control takes over (resumes without customer activation) and sets itself back to speed 1 (speed prior to braking).in some instances speed 1 is faster than speed 2 causing car to accelerate into traffic ahead of vehicle.*la
