Was driving and the airbag inflated, the brakes locked up. Then started smelling gas and smoke

I was exiting the highway onto a median divided street that runs east/west. I was stopped at the light, in a double turn lane, once the light turned green i proceeded to turn west going about 5 mph, immediately i was hit by a woman to the left of me in the parallel turn lane in my front driver side quarter panel.her car hit at nearly a 90 degree angle with enough impact to rock the sportage, it buckled the hood and knocked off several of the grill panels.not until i moved the car and exited did i realize that there was a third car involved that impacted the car that hit me driving her into my car with enough force that her windows shatter and bent her front wheel in.her airbags employed in her vm jetta convertible, in addition, to the roll bars deploying.i am concerned that none of my front and/or side airbags deployed during the crash.my passenger and myself sustained bruising from the impact and seat belt restraint.why didn't the bags deploy?it would appear they are defective?

I swerved to hit a deer, hit the deer then went in to the ditch and drove head on into a tree.the airbags did not deploy, and i am wondering why.

I was pulling out into traffic and did not see a car due their headlights were not on. We hit and none of my air back deployed the whole front of my car was smashed and i hit my head on the door jam and my vehicle has side air bags also. I have contacted kia and initially got a case # and stuff. The case # is [xxx]. I did received one mess from them requestion stuff but they did not leave any kindof return # or any fax # or email for me to send the requested information back too. I have called kia approx. Three times a wk with no answers or return calls today i called and was able to get a fax #.i was perfectly healthy prior to my wreck now i have to take pain meds to make it through the day and i can not do house work or pick up my tow year old. Someone should look into why the air bags did not deploy.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I own a 2012 kia sportage that i purchased from riverhead auto mall, that experience was wonderful. I originally purchased a kia for a few reasons, the affordability but mainly the 5 year/10 year warranty. Since i have purchased this vehicle, i have had a few issues that i have visited various service departments to rectify which have still not been resolved. These are safety related issues, which i spoke to customer service department regarding and cannot believe that kia would not stand behind their vehicles. I can guarantee you one thing, after my recent experiences with kia i will never purchase another kia or related vehicle again.for years, i have been trying to have two issues resolved, again both safety issues. First, the seatbelts on the driver side and passenger side do not fully retract. They end up getting stuck in the door, also more recently there are times when wearing a seatbelt and stepping on the brakes, the seatbelt is not restraining the person. Second, the driver side door lock will not open with either key' you need to manually open the door. When the car is put into drive, the door will not lock. All other doors will lock, not the drivers door. I have brought the car to multiple service locations over the past few years trying to get these issues resolved. All while under warranty, and was told time after time this was an intermittent problem and my complaints were not showing at that time. In may i brought the car in again for service and was told that there would be a diagnostic fee for both issues of approximately $200 each to simply look at the issues. There is a great deal of details and paperwork that i have supplied to kia to support this. I went back and forth with multiple dealerships in between multiple surgeries since last summer.

Door will not lock completely when car is sitting in the sun and its hot outside.driver window will not roll down when its hot outside, trunk hatch will not open/unlock when hot out side.alarm doesnt work when hot outside.

Auto window switches have had to be replaced.starting with original oem switch as #! ,passenger side front is on third replacement, passenger side rear has been replaced once and is starting to go out again, switch will only operate from the drivers master control panel and drivers side rear has been replaced once. I believe it is a poorly manufactured part. Two were replaced under warranty, the other two will be out of my pocket. When the passenger side front went out for the second time, warranty was expired by one month with a history of problem auto window switches. I called kia motors corporate office and explained that these parts are junk and i would like another replacement. Person in charge of service for kia motors basically said tough your warranty is over. Vehicle auto window switches start out working intermittently when passenger tries to have window go up or down, then passenger has no way of putting window up or down then driver has to control window movement until switch finally goes out. This occurs whether vehicle is in motion or parked with ignition on

Engine seized while driving. There are other 2012 kia sportages under the engine recall but ours isn't even though it's the same problem. The engine seized and everything shut off causing us to have to pull over on side of the road in the middle of nowhere.

All gauges on instrument panel stopped working.

My car has a knocking sound in the engine. The oil has been changed on a regular basis. This car has been well taken care of. Also 2 of the windows will not work.

"takata recall" i was driving on highway 59 in houston in the middle lane and my oil light began flashing. After it flashed it stopped and then it would not accelerate. After i noticed it was not accelerating i began to get off the main highway onto a service road. By the time i got onto the service road the truck went completely dead. I got out and checked the oil and i had oil on my dip stick. I had gotten an oil change on september 1, 2018.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact called on behalf of the driver. While driving and shifting into fourth gear, a loud noise was heard and the vehicle stalled without warning in traffic. All the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel after the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence where it was noticed that the piston rod was detached. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

Fist problem ever with car but died on me while driving to work had to pull over lost all engine function, it would crank but wouldn't start, thank god for triple a had it towed to the kia dealership and they said they were going to do a diagnostic check on it that should take no more than a half hour and i am still waiting on a call back from them all day. Kia service sucks.

I was in the road slowly because i was going to stop in a toll bridge about 10 miles and suddenly my kia sportage 2012 was down and a big noisei was really scared. Abig hole appeared under the car and all oilscattered on the pavement.the piston broke so the engine. I'm really frustrated due to i still owe the vehicle and to fix the car the cost is $5,000.00 in kia of yuma arizona. I owe 6,000.00plus 5,000.00it's unfair

We have had to bring in and have repaired twice with our kia , it was due to a faulty cluster , so am wondering what due we do next ,,,,,thank you

Engine seized. Moves while in park moves forward in reverse. Driving engine stalled pulled over car died. Then would not engage but still moved as described. Had happened a few months ago after transmission replace.then the igniter switch needed replacement.

Was driving and the airbag inflated, the brakes locked up. Then started smelling gas and smoke

Turned my car on and heard a weird ticking sound while it was idol. I decided to take it in to my mechanic. On the way to the mechanic, the sound started happening while accelerating. Once i reached 40 mph, the car stopped accelerating and stalled. I had to use the momentum and turn left into dirt parking lot to pull over since there was no pull over lane on the right side. My passenger and back windows do not work unless driver pushes buttons next to them to roll windows down.

This information is from mechanic:engine began to smoke, vehicle drove into parking lot, put in park, opened hood, grey/green smoke noticed, engine would not restart. Mechanic stated that the engine seized up - would not restart - had to be towed to mechanic.

The vehicle was taken to kia tasca (1660 hartford ave, johnston, ri 02919) and the knock sensor detection system software was updated as part of the repair. The contact stated that after the recall repair, the radio amplifier was damaged and there was an electrical short, which caused the passenger's side front and rear exterior lighting to remain illuminated. The dealer was made aware of the failure and diagnosed that the two input control pins on the switches were broken and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired.the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The contact was informed that the regional parts manager would be contacted however, the manufacturer had not yet notified the contact of any action being taken. The failure mileage was 93,000.

Rattling noise from steering column that is continuously getting worse. Vibration from wheel while braking intermittently. This more often occurs while making turns. Every time the wheel is turned left, there is a clicking noise but not when it's turned to the right. I was originally told it was the viscous coupling, then i was told it may be the entire steering column. Why does a 5 year old vehicle need a new steering column. Also, this has been going on since i got the car and has just continuously gotten worse. I took it to another mechanic since kia has misdiagnosed the issue several times. He agrees its in the steering column but the entire dash has to be pulled apart to pinpoint the exact piece within the steering column. Please see the attached email from kia.

Kia installed ksds software update. After installation the malfunction as described in the recall notice occurred. I contacted kia and i am having difficulty with having them cover the extended warranty provided by the recall after the recall completion.

While driving my vehicle at 70mph on a straight stretch of the freeway, the car suddenly stopped accelerating, and then i was unable to use the gas or brake and the check engine light turned on. There was no warning. I coasted to the shoulder and had to have it towed to the local kia dealer. I was told that it needs a new engine. After some research i see that there was a recall for this, but it doesn't include my vin. It seems that many other people have had this problem and are also not part of the recall. I am really concerned about this. Luckily i have a warranty, but it doesn't cover my cost of towing or the rental car i need to get to work, so i still have a lot of unforeseen expenses. I have reached out to kia and am awaiting their response.

My vehicle ran out of fuel, before the fuel gauge came close to "empty".the light had just come on in the past five miles, which usually indicated i had about ~30+ miles before the gauge hit "empty".it is not an electronic speedometer.i have never had that issue before.surprisingly, i had never had this issue before.i refueled it, and it was seemingly okay. That was sunday. Friday of the following week, i had my vehicle state inspected (pa), where it did not pass.they had to fix several issues with the rear rotor (reoccurring issue).once it was fixed, they passed the vehicle.i had asked them to investigate the fuel issue i had. Two days later, my vehicle was less than half on the fuel gauge.i was on the highway, and suddenly i couldn't accelerate anymore.the fuel, battery, and engine lights all appeared on my dashboard. I smelled burning briefly.i went to the side of the highway and waited hours for aaa to jump my car and fuel it back.none of the options worked. I towed the car from aaa to kia wexford, at aaa's recommendation to get the car inspected to see if this issue was related to the recall. When the dealership finally looked into the issue, they said they wouldn't even investigate the engine issue, because i had not had the software update for the engine "downloaded" in time.the car was transferred to my name after this time period. They did state the engine would need to be replaced, paid for by me, for a total of $8k.i feel taken advantage of.

Vehicle is equipped with 2.4l mpi engine, 140,000 kilometers, meticulously maintained with regular oil changes with premium synthetic oil and filters, spark plug change, etc. Engine always made some light knocking sound but assumed it was the injectors, no lights or errors ever came on and service techs never said anything and forums mentioned noisy injectors so assumed it was normal.a few days ago i was on my home ascending a regular hill in the residential area when an unusually loud knocking noise began and engine began to struggle. It was late at night, and 5 minutes away from home so i was hoping i could at least make it home to bed and get it towed to the shop in the morning but as i approached the top of the hill the engine completely shut down causing abrupt deceleration and the vehicle began to roll back down in reverse quite rapidly and was very difficult to slow it to a safe stop since the brakes stiffen up without vacuum from the running engine on top of being startled from the event and slightly panicking from the surprise. Luckily enough it was at night and there was no traffic or pedestrians behind or near me but still was frightening enough. I was able to barely control the speed of the car down the hill in reverse with no power steering and brakes stiffened up and the emergency brake was not strong enough at that incline. I was able to move the car off the main street to a side street and attempted to start the vehicle several times hoping it was either a fuel problem or electrical. With no avail, i called tow company, waited for an hour in the cold at midnight, nothing worked, just clicking, towed it to the dealership and took a cab home. Got news from dealer that engine was infact seized and quote to replace engine is $8500 plus labor.

While i was driving the car on a busy 4 lane road the car lost power and the steering and brakes became stiff and hard to actuate. I pulled to the side of the road. A tow truck towed my car to the kia dealer where it was diagnosed as having a seized engine. My sportage had 86000 miles at the time of the engine seizure. I am now waiting for parts to repair the engine. My sportage is not under warranty. This may take 60-90 days! i will need to pay a $500.00 deductible for the repair. I feel kia should repair this defective engine for free and also pay my rental car cost. Many people have had this same exact problem with their kia sportage and other kia models.

While driving the vehicle, the motor started to stall at highway speeds and making loud knocking noises. Once the vehicle was pulled over to the shoulder of the road the vehicle died and would not start. There was no sign of over heating or any other damage. No warning lights appeared until right before the motor died and only then the check engine light appeared. We had the vehicle towed to a local service shop and the technician and mechanic informed us that the motor would need to be replaced. He informed us that the same motor family was under recall from kia but only the 'gdi' model not the 'mpi' model, which this vehicle is.they also informed us that the diagnosis and issues are in both motors from the 'theta ii' motor family in their experience.the vehicle currently has around 114,000 miles and has always been maintained and kept under recommended maintenance schedule.

While driving a ticking noise and loss of power was occurring. Ticking became louder, engine stops while in the lane. Didn't quite make it completely into the shoulder. Was on interstate 40 leaving albuquerque. Called 911, they told me to stay in car. Trucks and traffic were to heavy to even get out until the highway patrolman arrived and he blocked traffic with his lights. He stated this was the worst place to possibly break down.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 23 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the engine. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine seized due to premature bearing wear. The contact stated that metal shavings were found in the oil. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to take the vehicle taken to an authorized dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired or taken to a dealer. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

2102 kia sportage 2.4l with the theta ii engine; engine failure with 74,000 miles.on march 10, 2018driving from athens, georgia to orlando, florida on i-95 south. At approximately 2 pm in the afternoon, on a clear day, going 70 mph in the left most lane of the interstate, the engine suddenly started shaking and knocking then seized and slowed to a crawl.very carefully had to get over three lanes to the shoulder in heavy traffic.we had never seen an engine light, or any other warning come on in the car prior to that time. Regular maintenance and oil changes had been performed. This is the same engine that is under recall, but the vin does not fall under the recall. 'in doing more research we have seen that there are a huge number of 2012 of kia sportage and other kia and hyundai cars with the theta ii 2.4l engine that have failed which do not fall within the recall sc147 service campaign.the overall issue is that our car's engine failed in the exact same way that those in the service campaign failed and with only 74,000 miles.'on carcomplaints.com alone out of the over 100 most current complaints for the kia sportage, indicated they had engine failure.because their vin did not match the manufacturing plant they were not included in the recall. The most disturbing part of this is that most of the failures occurred at higher speeds and could have resulted in loss of life.'how many of these cars with these engines were involved in car wrecks, were totaled and it was never discovered that the cause of the wreck was engine failure? could any of those resulted in deaths?

"takata recall" i was driving on highway 59 in houston in the middle lane and my oil light began flashing. After it flashed it stopped and then it would not accelerate. After i noticed it was not accelerating i began to get off the main highway onto a service road. By the time i got onto the service road the truck went completely dead. I got out and checked the oil and i had oil on my dip stick. I had gotten an oil change on september 1, 2018.

I was driving on the freeway going about 65 miles an hour.i noticed i wasn't accelerating at the same speed. I put my foot on the gas harder and the internal lights went off and check engine light came on.i barely had enough time to move to the shoulder.i got it towed to the mechanic who most recently did the last oil change and tune up.they call me and told me the engine seized and they couldn't get it to turn.they recommended i take it to the dealership.the mechanic said it should still be under warranty. I am currently waiting to hear if its "my fault" since its a 3rd party warranty company.

Cruising along at freeway speed, 75 mph, vehicle momentarily lost power as if it was going to stall or down shift. Upon resuming speed, heard a tapping noise and a loud bang, saw smoke coming out the back of the vehicle and objects tossed out. Saw a vehicle following in my lane, swerve as if avoiding an object but did not stop. Coasted to the side of the freeway, noticed a trail of oil. Upon parking, checked underneath the engine compartment, noticed oil dripping and metal pieces, and what appeared to be a hole in the oil pan. Vehicle was towed to a dealership and was told, a couple of days later, that the vehicle may be subject to a recall for similar defects. Doing an online query, i noticed that the 2.4 engine for this model was not a part of the recall campaign, although other models with the 2.4 engine were.fortunately, it appears that no following vehicles were hit with any of the debris coming off the vehicle. Upon checking the side of the freeway, i picked up what appeared to be a piece of the engine's connecting rod. Had this piece hit a following vehicle, it could've resulted in property damage or unknown injuries to its occupants.

First complaint #11340436 filed in july 2020 for original 2012 engine. Engine light never came on. Driving on a highway 70-75 mph. Knocking sound in engine. Crankshaft piston rod damaged. Engine replaced with used 2014 motor.march 2021 complaint being filed for replacement 2014 engine (in july 2020)engine light has come on repeatedly in the last month when just driving around town. 1) oil was changed; light reset. 2) solenoid switch replaced; light reset. 3) leaking oil; valve cover secured 4) variable valve timing gear problem, timing is off causing oil pressure problems. Vehicle running rough, engine is audibly missing.

Merging on to highway at about 45 mph, vehicle started to stall and suddenly stopped and completely shut off on the middle of the highway. Check engin light came on but there was no check engine light or any other issues wrong with the vehicle prior. It was regularly maintained and oil changed. Had it towed to kia dealership where they confirmed that the engine had seized and said it was out of warenty and not part of recall.1 affected product

2012 sportage lx with 75,560 miles on vehicle. I am not the primary owner but a secondary owner so kia says the 100,000 mile power train warranty does not apply to me. The engine began making a knocking sound on sunday so i had it towed to round rock kia (n austin texas). Kia determined the cause of failure is a bad/worn connecting rod bearing which is the identical cause of failure as "recall 17v224000" | "kia's recall number "sc147". The recall impacts 2012 sportage failing in identical ways but because my vin is supposedly outside the recall pool they are saying it's not covered and wanting me to pay 4,200 for a new engine block. The details of the recall even mention the engine rod "during machining of the engine crankshaft and crankpins, metal shavings may have been left within the crankshaft oil passages, and the crankpins themselves may be too rough on the edges. As a result, oil may be blocked and cause the connecting rod bearings to wear, which would then cause them to fail and seize the whole engine."

The contact owns a kia sportage. The contact stated while driving at 55 mph, thecheck engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to east vancouver automotive(705 se park crest ave d430, vancouver, wa(360) 314-4723)where it was diagnosed there was metal shavings in the engine. The engine was replacedhowever the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to beaverton kia service & parts(12520 sw canyon rd, beaverton, or 97005503- 526-2186)where it was diagnosed there was metal in the engine again. The contact was referred to original dealer.the contact stated the failure was similar to nhtsa campaign number 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The failuremileage was 109,000. *dt*dt

Hi, on 04/24/2020 while driving on the highway at 60mph my kia broke down completely and lost the acceleration, a lot of oil was dripping from under the kia, and a lot of smoke came out from the hood. I brought my mechanic and confirmedme the engine blew out due to an oil leaking. I send the suv to kia dealer in cerritos, ca as it had an open recall due to an oil pan issue. They just notified me the dpsm manager review my case and declined repairs under warranty. All that info was provided to me by victor representative at kia dealer. And i requested via email a report of the reason from the refusal to repair the engine. Victor did not provided me no report and just texted me it was due to a connectingrod that went through and block, and it was a lack of lubrication. That sounds hard to believe from my side and my mechanic as no engines fail due to a connecting rod issue. That's for i'm submitting this claim. I had a case number just incase is needed #13629204 and my contact info is per below if you need to reach me.name: [xxx]tel# [xxx]email: [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Our kia 2012 sportage engine failed while we were driving on interstate 95 on march 10 2018. We had never had an engine warning light come onever until the engine seized going 65 mph. Heard a knocking sound come form the engine. Car seized without warning on the highway - had to coast to the shoulder. My vin does not show up in the recall but has the exact same issue. Car currently at mechanic.the engine failure is the exact description of all the other engine failures. ******we called kia and they said that our vin did not match their recall. And too bad for us. **** we have been in a quandry about how to deal with this. We spoke to our hyundai service advisor (we have owned a hyundai for 10 years with no problems) and he said that we should definitely pursue this further with kia.do you have any advice on who to deal with on this?we have no idea where to start.i do appreciate your time and any advice you might have.

While traveling at or below the speed limit on a highway my vehicle suddenly lost any power or "gas". I pulled over as safely as i could, with proper directional and followed by hazards. After stopping vehicle and placing vehicle in park engine was turned off. After trying to restart with no luck my vehicle was towed to my vehicle technician, whom stated that the vehicles engine seized and that he found bearing material within my engine oil which was just changed one week prior. My vehicle was then towed to kia dealership where i was told that my vehicle doesn't fit under the warranty because i have a different engine. From what i read my 2012 kia sportage with a 2.4l engine made in korea is in fact under sc147 as i research. After following up with kia north america multiple times and getting different stories multiple calls later. My vehicle has been sitting at a kia dealership for now 3 weeks.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact took the vehicle to kia of south austin (located at 5306 south interstate 35 road, austin, tx 78745, 512-444-6635) to get a replacement oil pan because the vin was included in an unknown recall. The dealer found metal fragments in the oil coming from the cam bearings. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and was unable to find any recalls associated with the failure and provided a case number. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 65 mph, the power steering began to fail. Subsequently, the entire engine failed. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road where it was towed to fuccillo kia (3900 state st, schenectady, ny 12304, (518) 847-0800). The dealer diagnosed that the engine failed. The vehicle was not repaired since it was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was notified and the contact was provided the same information. The failure mileage was 103,000.

Before this happened thought i heard a slight tapping sound like a rocker arm but didn't hear again day or two before as i would top a hill left my home. A couple of days later while driving on a city street in traffic engine died or shut off. Behind another car i had to turn out of my lane to avoid the rear-ending vehicle in front with no power steering struck a curb to my left oncoming lane coasted back on road crossed both lanes to the right finally coming to rest in small gravel lot of closed building. Put car in park and tried to start would not turn the engine over. I thought i damaged starter when i jumped curb. That night had towed to my home less than five mins away $90.00 bought starter puton tested old one, no good. Probably from trying to start over and over. Finally got motor to turn over sounded ok. When for test drive then motor made large knocking noise, i shut off quickly, had towed to mechanic shop.they inspected and determined motor had internal damage. $52.00 quote to replace motor 9,000.00 generally speaking conversation over the phone .(weekend) monday missed work no car. 27.00 hourly 8 hours. I had car put on trailer carried home following weekend $60.00. I bought this car new in 2012 had oil changed at first until kia stripped out my drain plug and didnt tell me. So did it myself from then on. Never had one issue with this car untill this in one day.

On my 2012 kia sportage, my engine failed my vehicle does not turn on because the engine doesn't work for my 2012 kia sportage i know this because it is a common issue in kia sportage that the engine doesn't work anymore and that the engine needs to be replaced and i saw that kia recalled 295,000 cars in the u.s. For engine problems and my vehicle needs to be 1 of them because my vehicle won't turn on anymore.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact had to coast the vehicle on a hill because it was unable to be driven. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for inspection and diagnostic testing. The dealer (butler kia, 4950 crater lake ave, medford, or 97504, (541) 776-3088) stated that the vehicle was excluded from a manufacturer recall for the engine assembly. The contact was uncertain if the vehicle would be repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 51,000.

Driving approximately 70 mph on the interstate, a loud squeak sound occurred and all of the lights on the dashboard lit up and the engine promptly shut off and has since then been unable to start again. The kia dealership has informed me that the vehicle has internal engine failure. My concern is driving a vehicle at that speed and having it instantly shut off is a huge safety risk and liability, especially after hearing ir has happened to others with identical vehicles.

I am an original owner. I have been driving for around 6 years and 75k miles.engine quit while i was driving the kia 2012 sportage on a highway. I was driving, as usual. I felt a bit bump(?). Suddenly, gas peddle did not functionally work(it worked physically push and release). The engine light and several lights came on. I moved on the side and turn it off. And then, i did try back it on. However, the engine did not respond. Finally, i had the sportage towed to kia service center

Was driving down the road at about 20-25 mph when the engine died without warning. After having it towed to a local shop, they determined there was an internal "catastrophic" engine failure. Had the car towed to the dealer where it was purchased, lee johnson kia in kirkland, wa. They confirmed the first diagnosis of catastrophic engine failure. It appears the engine starved itself of oil and exactly matches all of the symptoms described in the current kia "theta ii" engine recall campaign. The dealer agrees that it should be covered under the recall but kia refuses to cover it. We have been without this vehicle since late may 2017. It has been sitting at the dealer ever since. Kia's reasoning for not covering the engine replacement was that the engine did not originate from the assembly factory outlined in the recall. However, just as kia assumed the previous hyundai recall didn't impact them (as noted in your currently open investigation), i believe they continue to underestimate the broader impact of this manufacturing defect across all of their assembly factories. This leaves customers like me to foot the bill and replace the defective engine with a used, also likely defective engine, to the cost of ~$7,000. This is unacceptable and unsafe. We count our blessing this didn't happen while on the freeway, as the outcome could have been deadly.

Yesterday when i was driving my check engine light came on. So i took it to pepboys that said the code was 791. Then, called the dealership and mechanics to find out about it. Most people that part should not had went bad. This code is for the butterfly flips in the intake manofold.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving, the contact heard a knocking noise coming from the engine compartment before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine bearing rod damaged the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The local dealer was not notified. The failure mileage was 206,000.

My partner was driving 50 mph to work on a local highway when suddenly the vehicle lost power.no indicator lights had come on.there was only a slight tapping sound from under the hood.she was able to drift the vehicle to the side off the road.when she tried to restart the vehicle it would not start.the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was purchased and a diagnostic test revealed a ceased up engine.the vehicle had periodical oil changes as required to keep a vehicle in good running order and at the time had oil in it.at no time was there anyleaks or drips or signs on pavement where the vehicle was parked of any oil leakage.we were told the engine would need to be replaced.

Driving from flagstaff az to phoenix az on highway 17. The car started losing power so i pulled over and turned off the engine. It would not start again. I had it towed back to flagstaff at a cost of $390. The dealer there said the engine seized and would need to be replaced. The service employee stated that they are having a huge recall on kia engines but mine is not one of them. It would cost 5-6 thousand .i have called kia and they said "this car is not one of the recalls there is nothing we can do". I had them send my complaint to their escalation dept. And they basically said the same thing.i asked them to submit it to a higher source if there is one. They said they would see if there is anything they can do and to give them 3-4 business days. That was on 10/12/18. I called them on 10/19/18/ and only got voice mails

We are still making payments on a 2012 kia sportage awd. Last month on a drive to doctor appts the engine started clattering and blowing smoke. We pulled over to the side of the road just as the check engine light came on. We shut the engine off and popped the hood. The back of the engine had a bright orange glow. We had it towed to a nearby shop. They had me start the engine but it immediately started popping. They said the engine was shot. Not having the money to fix it we had it towed home. This happened on a busy 2 lane highway on the crest of a hill. Very dangerous for us and the tow truck driver. I have left messages with both kia hotline and the local dealer, no response.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle shuddered and made an abnormal sound without a warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over, opened the hood and noticed the engine was covered with engine oil. The vehicle was towed to sterling kia located at (125 southcity pkwy, lafayette, la 70503) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine) however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure but offered no assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000. The vin was not available.

The oil and engine light came on while i was driving and the car started to decrease in speed. I had to pull over to the side of the road and call for a tow truck to come and get me. The car started making a knocking sound and i am unable to drive my car at this point.

My car has a knocking sound in the engine. The oil has been changed on a regular basis. This car has been well taken care of. Also 2 of the windows will not work.

I purchased a 2012 kia sportage for my daughter four months ago. Last week she was driving late at night on the freeway and she heard a loud bang, lost power and was able to coast over to the side of the road. The car filled up with smoke as all the oil had drained out and the hot engine was burning it. I had to have it towed to the nearest kia dealership. They determined that the piston had gone through then engine block. They told me that i should have to only pay $119 dollars to pull the head gasket and kia should cover the cost of a new engine. After pulling the gasket they told me the blown engine was no fault of kia and since the car had not been serviced there the dealership would not pay to fix it. After many hours of research i learned that the same model and same year the engines i have has been involved in a recall.the only difference between the two engines is they come out of different manufacturing facilities.this makes absolutely no sense since the engines are having the exact same issues. I absolutely do not have $6800 to pay for a used engine which has more miles on it then the one that was blown. Not to mention it takes the value down considerably. We would live in constant fear that the engine would blow again putting my daughter in danger. I have gotten one message from the escalation department. I have tried to call back repeatedly, with no return call. This experience and treatment by a company that supposedly prides themselves on their customer service is deplorable. Update.i received a call on 4/16/2018 from a kia consumer complaint representative.we talked extensively about the situation.he assured me he would be working on a solution and told me he would call me within 5 business days.as of 4/27/2018 still no call.i would have called him sooner but i just got out of surgery a few days ago.

Begin to hear fluttering sound while driving on secondary and main roads. The sound begin to gradually get louder over the coarse of few days. Put the vehicle in the shop to get a diagnostic. The results came back engine failure due to engine oil restriction. Receive 2 opinions from mechanic shops both places results came back the same. When the rpms was revved up you could hear a loud knocking sound, along with driving the vehicle in motion would stall , and the engine light would flicker on and off.

My vehicle makes a ticking/knocking and grinding nose. It runs really hard and is sluggish. The check engine light is on. It has also stalled and turned off on its own from time to time. It jerks as well, but not consistently. All of these occur while in motion.

I was driving on a city street when my vehicle begin to loose power. I was stopped at a red light and could not get up to speed to continue thru the intersection. I pulled over then had someone direct traffic as i cautiously pulled into the parking lot of a local business. After work i got aaa to tow vehicle to my home. The next day i had aaa tow vehicle to a local repair shop.i contacted kia at that time and was told my vehicle was not included in the recall .i had several mechanics diagnose problem including my local kia dealership for a fee. As i trailed behind my friend as heslowly drove vehicle from 1 shop to kia, i noticed fire underneath the vehicle so we stopped and towed vehicle the rest of the way. Kia shop verified it to be engine failure and quoted me a repair fee of $7500 to $9000 to repair the problem. I had just spent $3000 about 3 months earlier for a new transmission so i decided to donate vehicle instead of spend more money.

The bearings within the engine have worn prematurely and has been diagnosed by our garage. They referred us to a nhtsa recall (17v22400) which matches the systems. My vehicle falls within the date of vehicles being recalled but when called, the dealer is claiming that my vehicle is not one included in this recall.the engine could blow at any time.

As i was driving down the 57 fwy in so california with my wife i attempted to pass a vehicle who was traveling slower than the rest of the fwy (under 55mph). Upon doing so i started to hear a knocking noise. (per myself and my mechanic its toasted the rod bearing). Being a mechanic for 20 yrs i knew that sound wasnt good. I pulled on the shoulder to verify i had motor oil. After checking oil level was good. I continued to exit the fwy. My car only has 114k miles. How does the waterpump last longer than the motor. While waiting for a tow truck i started to google this issue. After what i read i called kia to only find out my car wasnt part of this recall. How is this possible? it is the same exact problem to which there is a recall. Car has been maintained regularly. To make matters worse we are moving out of state in 5 days. I would have never in a million years thought this car would blow the motor at 114k miles. Qhen the salesmen at the kia dealership wrote my credit score on a piece of paper 60 points lower than what it actually was i should have walked away. There needs to be another investigation/ class action lawsuit for all kia 2.4 that throw a rod bearing at suck low miles. This only happens due to faulty parts at this low of milage. The only reason i bought a kia was they are were to be good cars. I will never buy one again. Ever

The oil pan is leaking oil.

Our 2012 kia sportage ex 2.4l theta ii mpi engine with 107k miles started knocking and jolting while driving. After being able to get home without any incidents. Kia tells us it has rod bearing issues. Kia then explains that even though the car was well maintained and rod bearing failures are a huge problem with these engines they won't cover it because it is not the gdi. Kia corporate needs to see that not just there gdi engines are trash but so are the mpi. Stand behind your product kia and expand your recall to all 2.4l theta ii engines

Vehicle in motion highway speeds flat surface suddenly turned offtowed to dealer -- catastrophic engine failure engine needs to be replaced

While driving down a city road at approx. 45 mph, car suddenly began sputtering and making a loud knocking noise in the engine and seems to be losing power and feels very unsafe to drive.engine light comes on and goes off and comes back on.

Driving up hill at 106,701 miles on car around 50 mph and loud sound started with no warning. Engine power decreased suddenly and check engine light came on. Car was able to be driven to safe location before being disabled. Towed to local mechanic and told engine had failed catastrophically. Taken to kia dealership and there "sounded like rod knock" with code p0301 indicative of cylinder misfire. Required engine to be rebuilt. Metal debris found on exhaust cvvt solenoid was noted in report from mechanic. Very fortunate no fire or harm to self and family. We are original owners of car. Maintenance records are not fully available, but all recommended pm including oil was self performed (oil every 5000 miles using synthetic oil and top end filter).short block, pans, shaft assembly, cvvt assembly replaced.

While traveling in id heading home to ut (in motion) on an interstate interchange at hwy us-20 w to i-15 s, my 2012 kia sportage with only 36,000 miles, experienced engine power loss, the engine seized with no warning indicators. I was eventually able to bring the vehicle to a stop on the side of the road, but it was difficult because there were no brakes. After waiting several minutes and calming down, i tried the ignition and it started up again and since there were no warning indicators and i'd never experienced this particular problem before, i decided to push on keeping to the right side of traffic and going as slow as possible. After a few minutes of driving slowly, the car started making a knocking sound so i exited immediately at the nearest pocatello exit, to find a kia dealership. Now the car was making an awful squealing noise along with the knocking. I was able to putter to the pocatello kia dealer and had to leave the car so they could run a diagnostic test the following monday. I then had to find a ride back to salt lake. The result was "rod failure" according to the test and they recommended that i buy a motor for approx $7000 and did not disclose they could start a service ticket with the test result, so one week later a friend helped me trailer the kia back to salt lake, we left it at our family mechanic's shop whom we've used for other cars and started the search for a less expensive engine. Had a jegs engine shipped but jegs sent the wrong engine and now say there are no engines that will work for my kia. One month later i still have no car, no engine and am racking up rental car charges and it looks like my only option is to buy another car. Feeling a little violated because i took great care of that kia. I can provide documentation upon request, if you feel it would be helpful, please let me know.

2012 kia sportage (approx 55k miles, vin not covered by therecall - manufacturer warranty expired in january). Drivingacross country for thanksgiving. We left tucson, az lastthursday night (11/16). Friday afternoon we started hearing arattling sound coming from the engine. As i accelerated, therattling became faster and worse. About 1 to 2 miles later, thecars just stopped running. We were stranded 50 miles west ofodessa tx for about 2 hours. $400 tow truck ride to the kiadealership in odessa. We got there about 30 minutes beforethey closed and were told the car likely would need a enginereplacement, but they couldn't check it out until monday.we decided to rent a car and forge ahead to north carolinaleaving our sportage in texas. I called on monday, and wasthe told the engine would need to be replaced. I asked aboutthe oil, and was told the oil was "full and clean". They weregoing to try to find a reasonably priced used engine for us.after learning of the engine recall, i called kia on tuesdaymorning (800-333-4kia) and was told our car wasn'taffected by the recall, but if the car was diagnosed at thedealership a "tech-line" would be generated and kia couldlook at the case and possibly help out on a case-by-casebasis.i called the dealership back and they told me they don't starta "tech-line" if the car is no longer covered by warranty, butthey would check with his regional manager and get back tome. I haven't heard from them today.anyway... Sorry for the novel. Based on otherstories, and news articles i've read, i believe this engine hasthe same kind of defects the others have had. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the contact heard a rattling sound coming from the vehicle. A few days later while driving, the vehicle loss motive power and stalled in the middle of the road. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle and diagnosed the failure as an engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. Contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, without warning the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact with help from a bystander pushed the vehicle off of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact stated that the vehicle started the next day and operated as designed. The vehicle was taken to demontrond kia located at (14101 north freeway, houston, tx 77090, (281) 872-3859) where it was diagnosed and determined that the keyfob need to reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer for a 2nd diagnosis which determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number 19v101000 (engine) as a possible solution to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 129,806.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, a loud knocking noise was coming from the engine. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate and loss motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer tempe kia (8005 s. Autoplex loop. Tempe az) who diagnosed that the engine bearing rod failed and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 113,000.

Knocking noise coming from engine, have taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic as well as kia dealership service department both diagnosed the problem as needed a new engine ($5000-7,000). This vehicle 73,000 miles, oil changed at every 5000 miles. There is no explanation or reasonable cause of engine failure except for manufacturing. Only had the 1 1/2 years. Dealership told us only option is to buy a new car from.

While driving on the freeway going 70 mph my engine started making a weird noise. At first it sounded like my car was dragging something. There were no warning lights before the engine went out. Pulled over to the side of the road, turned off the car, and checked underneath the car. Then checked underneath the hood. There was no smoke and fluids were good and everything else looked good. But as i tried restarting the car after 20 mins the engine sounded like popcorn popping. At that point i called a tow truck. The tow truck guy asked if he could check the oil. When he did he found small metal shavings in it. My car was towed to the nearest kia dealership (which is nowhere near where i currently live). Two weeks prior to that i just serviced my car for an oil change and nothing was wrong at that time.i have always kept up with my factory maintenance and oil changes on time at the same dealership i bought it from. Never experienced any other issues with my car. When i called a kia representative the next day they said my vin has no recalls for the sc147. It only covered the 2011-2013 kia sportage 2.0l engine not the 2.4l engine that i have. My car is still under warranty. Reading through other complaints about similar issues it sounds like not only should kia be recalling the 2.0l engine but also the 2.4l engine. Just because the 2.0l and 2.4l engines are built by two manufacturers at two different facilities doesn't mean customers with the 2.4l engine should be ignored. Kia needs to take ownership and do some investigation with the facility that built the 2.4l engine. The 2.0l and 2.4l engines are experiencing the exact same issues.i called the dealership today to get status and they said they have no eta at this time because kia has the engine backlogged. So right now i have no idea when i will be getting my car back. This is very frustrating.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle had difficulty accelerating. The engine shut off and the check engine and oil indicators illuminated. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. The contact waited a few minutes and attempted to restart the vehicle. The vehicle shook and the entire instrument panel illuminated. The contact stated that smoke and flames appeared under the hood. The vehicle was towed by the insurance company to a repair shop. The vehicle was not destroyed. The contact was unsure if a police report was filed. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle had to be towed to a dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was towed to boniface hiers kia (880 s apollo blvd, melbourne, fl 32901, (321) 951-9595) where it was determined that there was no fire even though the vehicle showed signs of a fire. The contact claimed to have received an unknown recall notice; however, a recall was not found to be associated with the vin. The vehicle was currently still at the dealer and had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while coasting into a fueling station, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine of the vehicle. The vehicle was turned off and restarted and the noise was still present. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the connecting rod failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. A dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.

At only 97,000 miles our 2012 kia engine seized and threw a rod onto the interstate.it was 97 degrees out and out 1 yo was stranded with us on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere until help arrived.come to find out it was a common issue with this kia and hyundai engine.there was even a recall. Unfortunately kia said that the problem was only certain vin numbers and that ours want produced at the same place.the internet is full of this same issue. It's obviously a design issue or a larger production issue.i cannot express the economic bind this put our family in and kia made it very clear that they don't care. They were even rude and dismissive on their customer care line.

Complete and total engine failure. In a matter of 2 days when from engine knocking to total engine failure.

I had been hearing a strange noise when pushing the brakes since august 2018, i had a lay person look at it who stated it was the wheel bearings and should be replaced. I took it to kia as i was still under warranty for 20 more miles and they said it wasn't the bearings and they could find no problems at all with the car. On feb. 20, 2019, 6 months later, i was driving with my son on the highway and started to hear a loud knocking noise at the base of the windshield under the hood and the speedometer started to falter. I tried accelerating and the knocking increased and all the lights on the dash went on and the speedometer began falling. I hurried to get over and off the highway as the smoke and burning smell was engulfing the front of the car. It completely died as i rolled to a stop with smoke pouring from under the hood. I towed it to kia who said they would do a diagnostic for $145. The tow driver gave me a lemon sized chunk of metal stating it looked like a piece of the oil pan as the flatbed was covered in oil. I had to call kia the next day to get a diagnosis. They said they didn't do one because just from looking at the hole in the oil pan, they could tell it had blown an engine rod. I was informed that even though this was a recall event because my vin was not recalled they would do nothing for me.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 75 mph, the vehicle decelerated without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (pat peck kia, 10611 boney ave, d'lberville, ms 39540, 228-679-5200) where it was diagnosed that the connecting rod was faulty and the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 83,200.

Driving down the road and heard a load noise from under the hood.noise stopped and then loss all power!everthing died.got it pulled over and now the motor is seized.got the oil changed a week before and never have had issues with this car.

So since i purchased the vehicle around this time last year the feeling while driving my kia was smooth no vibration or notice coming from the car, i havent had any kind of accidents or hit any pot holes, so now a year into having the kia and keeping all the fluids, brakes, and tires changed i noticed before getting it services and having those listed changed there is a feeling in the steering front end of what i say feels like the tires are going to fold up under the car. When turning the steering seems to feel really loose and i have to correct it out of the direction i just turn to make the vehicle to correctly drive forward. It has pulled to the right for a long time and this is one of the reasons i replaced the tires. Also there is a ticking noise coming from the engine and after learning about a recall with this kia that cause the engine to catch fire i called and the vehicle has already had this issue repaired but it is making that clicking or ticking sound still and the exhaust has moisture coming from it only on the right passenger side and the pipe it completely black from whatever it is putting out ..

Engine had a stutter upon a few days of purchase months later car would not start , was told it was timing belt ? bought it used and checked recall , was told no recalls ? however i do believe something was wrong when i purchased this vehicle , and i was not informed

The engine locked up on my vehicle just as described in the recall.kia refused to repair because "it was not on the list".they should not have been allowed to pick and choose which vehicles to include in the recall.my vehicle is still sitting in my garage and i am still paying a monthly note.

The motor locked

Purchased dec. 2018 used.drove 10k miles and no indication of a problem.had a window motor repaired in july.picked car up on friday.on monday, knocking sound started occurring in engine.on tuesday, it was worse so drover straight to kia dealership.it lost power on a major highway so i got over to the right.made it to the dealership exit but car died on a major street in front of dealership.finally got it started and turned into parking lot.two weeks later i was told it needed the engine replaced.there is only 106k miles on it.bought for daughter that will start driving in september.spent all my savings.they said 3900 plus labor for used motor or 6500 plus labor for new engine.

Engine started making loud clanging noises with a strong burnt oil smell while driving down the highway roughly 500 miles from home. Pulled over under power but had the car towed to a mechanic who declared the engine required replacement. We could not justify the $6k cost of replacement so junked the car with a local salvage yard that was not affiliated with the mechanic.

Driving out of town and engine failed

After attempting to remote start my car parked in the lot, i went outside to a car that didn't realize it could start and yet it continued to try.i stopped it and tried the key, and the car lights worked but the car was quiet, and would not turn over.i had it towed to kia dealer, and after two days they said it was the timing chain, guides, and tensions $1,116, plus tax.....after a week they said you have 16 of your 32 valves damaged $2,500, plus tax. Apparently my 2012 kia sportage 2.4l mpi theta ii 64,000 mileage, is not part of the recall.i bought the car as a second owner so the warranty ran out at 60,000 for second owners. Kia corporate, customer service says "no goodwill", which means they can't help me.i like many still have a car loan for the vehicle that has been sitting for 2 weeks at the dealership.

Just bought from a private seller in pueblo. Was driving to aurorawhen the car stopped and would not start. Had to tow it to a dealer.

Only had my 2012 kia sportage for 1 year and 7 months and 73000 miles. Driving and all the lights came on flashing. Than the engine stopped. My mechanic said it was part of the recall and i had it towed to the kia dealership where i bought it. They said call kia corporate. Back and forth and now a pandemic. Car just sitting at the dealership and still making payments. They said my car is not part of the recall because my engine is a mpi theta 11 engine. Can you please look into the mpi theta 11 engine! and make kia do the right that and recall the engine. They are still able to sell these cars and make money. And the consumer is in danger!

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 30 mph, the oil pressure and temperature gauge indicators illuminated, and the vehicle made a knocking sound. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and had it towed to her residence. The contact called dick hannah kia (3400 ne auto mall dr, vancouver, wa 98662) and was informed that the vehicle exceeded the mileage to be repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000.

Engine knocked as i sped up on highwaythen car died and engine and oil lights came on as i pulled onto an off-rampcar will no longer start or runhad to be toweddiagnosed as failed engine

I was driving on highway and just about to take exit and my engine didn't gave me any power and lights on a computer when on, stirring well and brakes become heavy. I pulled to the side of the highway and my car didn't start since then. I took car to service and they sad it's engine seizing up. I could make a serious car excited on a highway. I did all oil changes, i take a good care of the car.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 65 mph, the engine seized without warning. An independent mechanic diagnosed that the engine seized. Doug smith kia in american fork, utah was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer. The failure mileage was 66,000.

I was driving the vehicle came to a stop at a red light , the vehicle had stalled on its own tried turning it back over and it would not do anything we had to push the vehicle out of the middle of an intersection unbelievable! the motor seized up for no reason and left me stranded now kia will not do anything about it the vehicle only has around51,000-52,000 miles!

At 100,000 miles, a knocking sound could be heard.the service department at the dealership indicated that the engine was faulty. I understand that there was a recall of the 2012 kia sportagebut my vin number does not indicate that my vehicle was affected by this recall.can you explain why my vehicle which is affected by the same engine failure is not covered?

Engine suddenly shut off while driving/accelerating onto a parkway.

I had a recall on my kia for sc200sl engine inspect/test/repair.i make any appointment onwith kiacompany to check and repair, inspect engine or replace it on as the recall describe it. I went there that day the take the car on their shop for inspect it. It took like one hour to them to finished it. They tell me the repair and inspect the enginethe and everything. I went home i find out the did repair and inspect my car but the guy was just lie to me. The engine was still have engine check on. I call them to make another appointment because the first appointment they said the repair the engine but they did not. I went the second time , they told me to leave the car there for one day so that the can look at it again . They day after that i went pick up my car they said again the repair and inspect it now i should be good, after one day driving it the engine was getting worse than before the check engine come back on. The oil light comes on and oil level still full. So i want them to replace my engine or repair it . Anytime i go there they don't repair it.so now after about 10 minutes of driving oil light comes on and vehicle shut down or on red traffic light.

I pulled a trailer for the first time on this date.the truck only made it 10 miles, and lost all power, and i barely made it off of the freeway.brought it to the dealer, and they found the spark plugs blew apart.all they did was change the spark plugs and sent me on my way.on july 13th, i towed my camper, which was lighter than the last trailer i pulled.this time, about 6 miles into the trip, the engine completely let go on the highway.i had to get across 4 lanes of traffic with no power and a camper in-tow.waited at the side of the road for an hour and a half before kia sent a tow vehicle.discovered all 4 spark plugs were destroyed, and a hole in cylinder 3.kia will not warranty it, blaming the engine failure on the camper not having trailer brakes(completely absurd).the first failure in june, the trailer weighed 500lbs more, and had trailer brakes.kia does not want to admit fault for this extremely dangerous fault in their engine.the vehicle is rated for 2,000lbs towing capacity, and both trailers were well under the limit.my camper is only 1,155lbs.complete engine failure on the highway put me and my entire family in danger twice.this is un-acceptable.this was a loaded sx awd.(turbocharged).

Oxygen sensor and catalytic converter failed after five years.

Driving on the interstate, the engine of the car gave out.i was given zero warning before the engine completely died and i was forced to pull my car off to the side of the road.i was lucky that the car behind me did not hit me.the car is only 2 years old with about 30,000 miles and this should not have happened.it put my life and that of my 11 month old son at risk.the public needs to be aware of this issue!no one should have to worry about being in a fatal accident due to kia's faulty parts.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 70 mph up a hill and attempting to pass another vehicle, the contact's vehicle failed to accelerate. The contact stated that multiple unknown warning indicators were illuminated. The contact parked on the side of the road for ten minutes and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was able to be restarted, but the contact stated there was a delay and he heard an abnormal noise. The contact was able to drive 55 mph, but the failure recurred ten miles later. The contact pulled over and turned off the vehicle, but it would not restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was towed to steven kia (located at 3340 s main st, harrisonburg, va 22801, (540) 437-9908) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced and the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 129,000.

I was driving the vehicle on an interstate when i suddenly heard a popping sound and the battery and oil lights came on simultaneously. Then the engine shut off entirely. I was able to glide to the end of the exit ramp before the car came to a stop and i couldn't restart the engine.

Traveling on black friday in 2019, the engine hickuped as we were passing a car. Within two miles, a loud knocking sound started, and within a mile, the car quit running. We had it towed to a local mechanic who said the engine was shot. We contacted kia with our vin number, and they said the car was not covered under a recall of other kia models where the engine had died in the exact same fashion.

Engine failure as described in multiple complaints and same as current recall for which my vin is supposedly not affected. Regular maintenance as been performed. 1 day after most recent oil change, accelerated to enter interstate. Heard a pop then seen black smoke. Pulled over to side of interstate and popped the hood only to find a small engine fire. Very glad this wasn't a very busy time on the road as this could have been catastrophic.

Engine seized due to crankshaft bearing failure.car was moving on a city street when it failed.

I had my engine replaced from the recall in december 2017.i was driving my car home from work and the car caught fire two weeks ago.i read articles online that there have been other kia from 2012 and ofhe years that had engine fires.

Engine fell apart on expressway going 70mph

While driving my 2012 kia sportage about 30 mph on a county road, there was a loud knocking from the engine, the check engine light came on and the car stalled. It has been diagnosed as a crank bearing issue. There is a recall on 2012 kia sportage along with other kias and hyundai. The recall is for 2.4 liter engines in the optima and the sorrento but only for the 2.0 in the sportage. Why is this? i have a 2.4 liter engine and there are obviously issues which led to the recall but it won't be covered. The same safety issue that is in the 2.0 is in the 2.4 and it needs to recalled in the sportage just like it is in the other 2 models.

I have a 2012 kia sportage 2.4 front wheel drive. The motor number 3 rod broke and came through the block. The same issue as the recent all wheel drive ones that they recalled and are fixing.they said this one isn't under the recall but it's the exact same motor that's in the others that are recalled. Had it at the dealer for over a month for kia direct to say it's not covered. This happened around 114,000 miles.

Transmission went at 120,000 miles. Dealer repaired for $3,000. Car was given multipoint inspection, all ok per dealer. 3 days later my son was driving, in motion and without warning car stopped dead. Towed to local garage, engine is seized. Not part of the current recall. Not repairable except for engine replacement. Also noteworthy is that the dealer wrote the mileage on the service recipet at 98k miles not 120k.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently and ceased with an abnormal sound in the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact restarted the vehicle however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to ferguson kia located at 1501 n elm pl, broken arrow, ok 74012, to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 109,000.

My daughter was driving on the interstate at about 70mph when engine seized. She was in the left lane but thankfully managed to get into the emergency lane without being hit by other motorist. Vehicle only had 68k miles on it.kia does not accept responsibility for this even though it covers other sportages & optimas with the same engine for same exact problem. Thankful my daughter did not get hurt but she was left with a $5,500 bill that we had to pay to fix. Kia needs to expand the engine recall to all of the engines and now they are recalling some for a fire hazard. Kia needs to step up before someone is killed!

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact heard an abnormal noise while driving 60 mph. The noise was so excessive that the contact carefully drove the vehicle 45 mph due to a loss of power. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who stated that the engine assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to dolan kia (9455 s virginia st, reno, nv 89511, (775) 825-1013) where it was diagnosed that the engine assembly needed to be replaced. The dealer also stated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) and nhtsa action number: rq17003 (engine), although the contact's failure was identical. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage was not available.

August 2019, i took my vehicle into my dealership after having driven the car for only four months for them to tell me that the radiator overheated and the engine blew and that i would have to pay $4000+ to get it fixed. I purchased my vehicle late march - early april 2019 and was not notified of any sort of recall concerning this issue. When i took my vehicle in early august the recall was still not brought to my attention and they were going to charge me for maintenance for an issue that was clearly common for my particular vehicle.

Regarding nhtsa campaign number 17v224000, i was driving my kia on the highway when the engine totally stopped.

Car only has 79,597 and i'm hearing knocking noises coming from under the hood. I have now received my recall in the mail

My daughter was driving on the highway and the car just stopped, no warning, nothing. Luckily was able to get to side of road, towed and mechanic said the engine is completely blown/seized.won't start, still at mechanics in another state.no warnings or prior issues.consistent w/oil changes and upkeep

My husband was driving our 2012 kia sportage down the interstate when he heard a loud sound and saw smoke. He was able to pull over, thankfully, and all the oil began pouring out of the engine. Ultimately we had a hole in our engine. I have only had this vehicle 2 years but now it is rendered useless. Seeing the recall, i immediately call kia, only to be told that our vin # was not included in the recall. Are you kidding me?! we have two options for an engine, one is $8000 and the other $12,000! how do i know this won't happen again?? i can't afford to fix it, i still owe on it. I have no idea what we're going to do. This was our family vehicle. I'm beside myself.

I was on the highway going 70 mph when my car start to rattle and white smoke start coming out of the back of my car ... 3 warning light popped up on my dash and my car drastically slowed crow while i was on the highway luckily i was close to an exit.i could have caused an accident!!! had the car towed back to kia dealers..where they tell me there is nothing much they can do cuz the car is not in warranty.. Was not in warranty when they sold it to me that the car needed a new engine because the engine failed ... I have only had the car 2 year 80 000 millie's and it's not even paid off .... Feel like i have been ripped off from kia ... Don't by one of their cars!!!!!they are also saying it hard to find a engine for my car cuz they are most out of stock or on back order ... No wonder all these cars are drying !!!!

Rod bearing went out started knocking they knew they had bearing wearissues why didn't they recall all engines

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled. After stopping the vehicle, the vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the nhtsa campaign number 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 111,000.

Went out to get in my car and come home and it wouldn't start.it would roll over but nothing.had to call a tow truck to come tow it to a repair shop.thought it was just the radiator with a hole in it but with further investigation into it the head gasket had blown.no worning signs that anything was wrong .the heat gauge never moved while i was driving it.no lights nothing before leaving it sit for about 30 min and coming out to a car that wouldn't start.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving between 70 and 75 mph, the vehicle shook violently and made a loud rattling noise. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and the check engine and oil warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle made a loud popping noise and then stalled. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and then towed to westgate kia (10956 star rd, wake forest, nc 27587, (919) 263-3061) where it was diagnosed that the engine threw a rod and burst the oil pan. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 13316136. The approximate failure mileage was 91,942.

While driving the car, a knocking sound started and the sound seemed to be coming from the engine. As we started to accelerate and gradually climb in elevation (on our way to a camping trip in colorado) we noticed a burning smell. We pulled over and checked the oil and it was at normal levels. Turned around and headed back home (north of denver). Knocking sound got worse. Stopped the car for about 45 minutes and got something to eat. Started the car again and about a half mile down the road the check engine light came on and the knocking sound was louder. Made it home. Took the car into a kia dealership (about 8 miles from home) the next morning 7/22/2017. We learned that our vin # was not part of the current kia recall (sc147). Our vehicle is currently still parked in the kia dealership lot awaiting next steps.

Intake manifold runner control went out right after warranty. I originally had this issue in 2014 at approximately 38k miles- when it would have been covered under warranty. In 2014 the flap was stuck open, they closed the flap, cleared the code and it didn't become a problem again until 2017- right after the warranty expired. Both times i had this issue, i was driving down residential streets, so under 25 mph. Both times the engine sounded so horrible, i was afraid the engine was going to blow up.my question is how did the vehicles computer not detect this as an issue for 3 years following the initial code and how much engine damage did this cause?the engine tapping noise has continuously gotten worse, even after i had the part replaced. It's so noisy in park, not to mention how loud the sound is during acceleration. They are currently only recalling the engines on the 2012 sportage turbo but i can tell you there is something wrong with my car. This recall is either not being thorough with this recall or its intentional to minimize the companies loss on this recall.

While driving down interstate the vehicle started making a awful knocking noise. Then the dash lit up with oil pressure light check engine light. I slowed down and pulled to side of interstate with my children in the car.i had to call someone to come get us.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that the vehicle was stalling while being driven then did not start at all. The vehicle was taken to the dealer matthews kia of cartersville located at 595 e main st, cartersville, ga 30120 (770) 386-8400 and they told the dealer that the vehicle needed a new motor. The dealer informed that the engine needed to be replaced and that there were no recalls for the engine. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the starter to get the engine restarted and got an oil change. In addition, it was informed that the oil pan needed to be replaced. The vehicle drove a short distance from the oil change location and the motor burst into flames underneath the hood. The front motor compartment under the hood was damaged. The fire was extinguished by the contact. The fire department was called and filed a report. No police report was filed and there no injuries reported. The vehicle was towed back the used dealer (unknown dealer information).the failure mileage was 123,000.

On saturday december 8, 2018 leaving gatlinburg 2 hours out at 10:40 on the interstate returning to murfreesboro, tn; kiara call me stating her truck was making a ticking noise and was losing power. She went on to say that it had stalled out and died on the side of the road for about 10-15 mins. It then crank back up and seemed fine but the tick noise was still there, so she proceeded onward. So then i got another call from kiara about 45 min to an hour later, just getting into cookeville, stating the truck was now making a knocking noise along with the ticking but seemed to be a bit sluggish every so often. Unsure of what the case may be with the truck, i advised her to pull over and check the oil and see if it may need some additional oil put in it. So she did and added a little oil to see if it would either quiet or cease the noise, it didn't. So i then told her to leave the truck at the gas station and we'll figure out how to get it home the following day. So that following monday i rented a truck and trailer from u-haul and decided to go pick up the kia sportage to bring it back home. After listening while loading it up, i could tell it was nothing good going to come from this ordeal. Due to our financial situation when we got home there was nothing at that time that could be done pertaining to the vehicle, so we left it parked on the parking lot where we live until we had the necessary funds to get the vehicle properly diagnosed. My mother, eugenie called the kia customer service number on jan. 16, 2019 to see if there were any recalls on the vehicle because of the issues that kiara was having, but she was told that kiara bass could call them back to file a complaint, and that would get the ball rolling, but the vehicle would need to be taken to the dealership to be diagnosed of the problems.the vehicle is not driveable due to fear ofa breakdown on the road.

While driving on a highway, the engine of the car began to make a loud knocking sound. After the noise started, the engine power was severely reduced. The car failed to accelerate as normal. At the first stoplight after exiting the highway, the engine stalled. It started again, and stalled again at the next light but we were able to get it safely to a parking lot at an automotive service center. At no time, did the check engine light ever illuminate indicating that there may be a problem before or during this issue. The car was inspected the next day and the shop recommended engine replacement. Car was towed to a kia dealership and upon their inspection, it was determined that the knocking noise was coming from the crankshaft which caused "excessive metal throughout the engine". Total engine replacement was necessary. The car had approximately 103,000 miles at the time. Kia corporate offered no financial assistance since certified pre-owned warranty expired at 100,000 miles. The total cost of the engine replacement was $5,037.93 which had to be paid out of pocket.

While driving on the highway, i attempted to increase my speed and the vehicle begin to decrease in speed. I immediately got pulled over and the vehicle slowed all the way down and stopped. The car wouldn't restart or go. At this time 2 lights appeared on the dash, the oil light and battery light. My oil had recently been change 2 weeks prior. Once towed to a shop, they determined it could be engine issues because the car had power but wouldn't turnover. I then towed the vehicle to the kia dealership where they said there could be a battery issue. Once the battery was ruled out, i was called 30 minutes later and informed my engine was locked. At 148, 000 miles and the only owner of the car, i had not prior warnings of sudden engine failure. I was on the highway going 80 mph, no noises, no lights, nothing. I was told there was no recall on the vehicle and it was like a person dying of old age. There are recalls on the 2012 kia sportages for engine issues.

Leaving a friend'shouse my car made a clicking sound.i continued to drive and the sound appeared to have gone away. Minutes later while driving 70 mph on i-85 n in atlanta my 2012 kia sportage (without warning lights or any indication that anything was wrong) made a very loud noise and lost speed quickly. I put on my emergency flashers and moved across lanes until i could exit.when i got to the ramp the engine died and the check engine light came on.i was able to start the car again. It started off but died again.i tried it once again and it started.i put the car in neutral and pressed the gas so it wouldn't turn off. I threw it in drive and the car did begin to move but it never got over20 mph despite the fact that i had the pedal pressed to the floor. Cars were honking their horn and passing me recklessly.i pulled into the parking lot of a pep boys center and called to have my car towed.it (and me) was towed back to gainesville, ga to the dealership at 11:00 pm . The same dealership where i bought and have had it serviced since i purchased it. Monday i went to the dealership to see what was wrong.the mechanic immediately told me that it was my engine after only having another mechanic start the car'.it only ran for a short period of time. Maybe like 5-secondshe stated that the engine needed to be replaced.after further investigation i have since learned that this is indicative of the 2012 kia sportage as well as a number of other kia models.i found numerous testimonials oniine where this happened to others.i also learned that there is a class action lawsuit against kia called the engine oil defect lawsuit where those involved in the suit share experiences eerily similar to mine. Kia of america and carriage kia have not been very cooperative in this matter.

While accelerating through a traffic controlled intersection the engine suddenly quit working. I was barely able to coast to asafe location. However, due to the heat of the day i almost had a problem with heatstroke while waiting on a tow truck. (fortunately i was able to find someplace to cool off while waiting). I am glad it happened there instead of on the highway at 70 mph while between towns.

While driving into a parking lot, check engine and key light turned on. I pulled into a parking spot and turned the car off. Temperature gage was reading normal, i tried to turn the car back on and nothing but the battery operated systems turned on. I had it towed to the nearest shop where they started with replacing the starter; which appeared to be burnt. Once the new starter was installed, the mechanic tried to start the vehicle and, again, nothing from the engine - not one sound. They said the engine was seized. I then had the car towed to my local kia dealership. The dealership charged me $150 to do nothing more than try to start the car; which i already explained to them would not start due to the engine not responding. They said they couldn't investigate further than that to find out what caused the engine to fail and said i would have to appeal their decision by calling kia consumer affairs. Kia consumer affairs opened a claim and stated they will get back to me with a decision in 3-5 business days; however, i'm unsure how they will be able to make a sound decisions regarding replacing my engine without doing their due diligence to identify the root cause of the issue. I have always been on top of preventative maintenance for this vehicle, there has never before been any incidents that would lead me to believe this engine was on its way out. At 133k miles, there is no reason, other than internal defect caused during the manufacturing process; that could have caused this issue.

Driving down the highway in our 2012 kia sportage with 118,000 miles on it, vehicle decelerated and we pulled over. Engine was still running, turned it off and would not start again.kia now claims that our engine is not included in the recall for this issue and wants $7000 to fix it.this is bull crap.they have known problems with kia sportage engines in this time frame.they are picking and choosing what they want to fix and in the meantime trying to get money for a problem they know is going to happen and then claim the vin number isn't included in the recall.they are crooks and taking advantage of people when they are fully aware there is problem with their manufacturing of the engine.

Can you please make kia corporate recall 2012 kia sportage mpi theta 11 engine!kia sold my 20 year old daughter this unsafe car. She was driving at 55 mph when the engine blew. She could have been killed. And we still own thousands on the car. Making payments during covid on a car that is sitting at the dealership! absolutely no help from the dealership or kia corporate. How is it possible that my engine has 0 recalls!

Check engine light came on. Mechanic tested and got code- p0017 which is unknown trouble code. The mechanic said there was a recall on this motor in other vehicles due to engine seizing up with this code. Two days after that the car is not driveable. When i went out to start the car it took awhile to turn over and won't start. The car has new battery and alternator was tested and is good.i was lucky and wasn't driving when engine seized up. Car only has 104,000 miles on it.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact heard an abnormal knocking noise without warning after returning from a trip more than 100 miles away. The contact notified phil long kia (1020 motor city dr, colorado springs, co 80905, (719) 425-2770) and they diagnosed that the engine assembly failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the failure was similar. The vehicle was also not included in nhtsa action number: rq17003 (engine). The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

I bought my sportage used with 102000 miles on it. I drove it for 4 1/2 monhths [4100 miles]. I was on the highway when it started to stall. Then it started making a loud tapping noise. I had it towed to the kia dealer and the engine is no good. I need another one, but my vin is not on the recall because it's a 2.4l and only the 3.0l for this model is recalled. Even though the 2.4l in the sorento is on the recall list. I'm waiting to hear what i can do but they ought to give me an engine since it is recalled on other kias. At this point i'm railing because i spent $9000 for 4 months of use if they don't give me an engine.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage.the contact stated that while driving, a metal clunking noise was heard coming from the engine compartment. The stated that the engine then stalled but was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to the dealer hyman bros kia (11901 midlothian turnpike, midlothian, va 23113, (888) 473-0358) where the vehicle was awaiting diagnosis and repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 82,000.

Driving down the road and vehicle shut off on its own, engine started making a loud noise in the engine area, metal shavings were found in my oil. This happened on a state highway near my home.

I was driving down the road when the engine siezed up and died on me. I was traveling at 60 mph when it died on me and luckily there was a shoulder to pull off of the highway so that i could get out of harms way in the heavy traffic.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

Car started making horrible noise and lost power while driving (in motion). Had it towed to a shop. According to mechanics, it was catastrophic internal engine failure. Metal shaving found in lower engine compartment.

The vehicle has 85447 miles.driver was driving down the road when they heard a loud clanking noise followed by a complete failure and seizing of the lower engine mechanism.all this occurred in a few minuets time span.the car was in motion on a rural hwy when the engine seized.car and driver were stranded on side of the hwy requiring the need to be towed. Upon research, i believe this is related to the current scv147 or 17v224000 recall.kia motors recall line was contacted and they stated that this car is not listed as part of the recall listed above.the description of events of other drivers leads me to believe that this is similar in nature. I believe this should be researched further and the current recall should be expanded.the vehicle acts as if the lower bearing gave out prematurely.

I never experienced any problems with this car, nor no warning light indicating a problem. Oct. 2018 while driving, my car just stopped. I had two mechanics look at the car and they both said i had a engine problem. Called kia and a customer service agent stated that my vin was not part of a their recall.i noticed online several complaints with their kia sportage engines.my big problem is i still owe on this vehicle.

Took this kia into my dealership to have a check engine light looked at and it has the exact same problem as recall number 17v224000. The service department told me that barings in cylinders 2 and 3 are going bad and that there is metal shavings in the oil pan. Exactly like the recall that my vin in apparently not part of.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine). While driving 70 mph, the contact heard a "growling" sound coming from the engine and the vehicle began to stall without warning. The speed began to decrease and the contact was able to pull the vehicle over. While placing the vehicle into park, the vehicle began to shudder and noises were heard from the engine compartment. The contact had the vehicle towed to vanguard kia of arlington (1501 e interstate 20, arlington, tx 76018, (817) 375-2700) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 137,000.

Vehicle was in motion on a street when suddenly slowed (as if it wanted to stall) and engine light/engine oil pan/battery lights all came on.. Turned car off then back on and slowly drove home (30 miles) no faster than 60mph. This happened again 1 day later before it was towed to my local kia dealership. Kia recall #sc174 nhtsa #19v101

2012 kia sportage 2.4 mpi, engine stalled on road, loud knocking from engine. Dealership stats not covered under warranty and requires new engine. Vehicle only had 111,000 miles and had frequent oil changes every 5000 miles with full synthetic.

I was driving down a busy street going 60mph when my engine just died. I coasted until i was able to pull over and thankfully no accident occurred. I tried to turn the key but the car wouldn't start. It was completely dead. It was towed to our local mechanic and we were told the engine was blown and he couldn't even turn it over manually. When looking for a new engine there was not 1 in all of the us available!! he mentioned the recall regarding engine failure on certain kia sportages so i called the kia dealership and told them what happened. They said my vin # was not part of the recall and my warranty had just expired so they were not able to help me at all! i couldn't believe what they were saying and especially how terrible they treated me. My car only has 80k miles on it and this was not right. I investigated the recall and found it was for the engines failing which is exactly what happened to mine. I also found a lot more people that have been dealing with this same situation for over a year now that are unable to even purchase another engine because there are none available due to all the engines exploding and needing replacement. They too were not under the vin recall but their engines were doing the exact same thing. Kia is definitely hiding something and i think someone needs to seriously investigate this! my family could have died and so could all of the other family's that this has happened to. My car now sits in our driveway unable to drive, unable to fix and unable to sell yet i'm still having to make payments on it. I will never buy a kia again and i hope someone gets these lying jerks for what they've done and are continuing to do.

I had an engine failure while the car was in motion. Took it to kia mechanic who stated there was a premature connecting rod bearing failure. Kia has a recall sc147 on engines for this reason, but is claiming that my engine does not qualify even though it is the same exact problem.

2012 kia sportage. Consumer writes in regards to engine safety recall. *ldthe consumer stated the engine turns over but, won't start. The manufacturer and dealer were notified. The consumer was initially informed the vehicle would be repaired under recall but, then was informed it would not be covered due to the vehicle no longer being on the dealer's lot.

The contact called on behalf his daughter who owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated while his daughter was driving 35 mph, the vehicle started making an abnormal noise. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and was notified the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was informed of failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

We purchased the vehicle from a family member. My granddaughter was coming home on the expressway, and the car started to vibrate and knock and began to shut down. She pulled off the expressway and the she was able to maneuver the car to the side of the road. When they opened the hood, smoke came out but there wasn't a fire. After having the car towed to the kia dealership the next day, it was determined that the engine seized up. Because there is was out of warranty, the dealership has declined to fix the problem. We are being told the vin number that is on our theta ii gdi engine is not on the other engine recalls for the 2012 kia sportagetheta ii engine. It appears that kia is trying to distance itself from fixing an obvious problem with these engines bydesignating only certain engines qualify. Putting an engine in a vehicle is out of the question, particularly now with this pandemic and having limited work hours. There are no savings to repair this. We now have a beautiful vehicle with no engine that is useless for us. We have contacted kia consumer department and will again appeal to them now that the dealership has examined it. But i would hope that your agency is able to push kia to include any of these engines that have failed, particularly if they have been well maintained over the years.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 45 mph, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the front of the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact pulled over, turned off and restarted the vehicle, and a loud banging noise was heard. In addition, smoke appeared from the front and rear of the vehicle. A local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.updated 10/24/17*lj updated 10/26/2017the vehicle was repaired. While driving a ticking noise from engine, losing power, louder ticking, engine stops. Dangerous interstate. Bary made it to shoulder.

While driving approximately 65mph on the highway, all vehicle warning lights came on and our 2012 kia sportage lx stalled. Fortunately, the driver was able to avoid a collision while coasting to a roadside stop on a busy highway, but the vehicle could not be restarted. After leaving passengers stranded roadside on a sunday evening, the vehicle was towed to a kia dealership that completed a diagnostic workup and determined that the 2.4 l dohc mpi theta ii engine with 92,361 miles required replacement. Regular maintenance had been completed and the vehicle was in otherwise excellent condition. The kia warranty was not honored as we were not original owners and the extended warranty purchased from the kia dealership had just expired. The cost of a replacement engine was quoted to be $7,500 for the engine alone excluding labor which exceeded the value of the car prior to this incident. Per dealership recommendations, kia's corporate customer service was contacted to request reconsideration. Although the staff was very nice and committed to refile the warranty request for reconsideration and call us within 72 business hours, we were never contacted by kia with a final decision.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact stated that there was still power to the vehicle. The contact turned the vehicle off and attempted to restart it with the ignition key. On the third attempt, the vehicle restarted, but would not accelerate forward. Summit place kia east (44900 n gratiot ave, clinton township, michigan 48036) was made aware of the failure and stated that there were no active recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 96,100.

Car is a 2012 kia sportage. 82,000 miles 5 yrs old. First instance. Car was moving around 2 mph through drive thru when the car stalled. Engine light came on at that time. Was able to restart. Took to dealership. Said the engine was dirty but could not find problem. 1 week later while exiting freeway around 20mph. Car shut off while still in motion but coming to a stop. Again engine light came on. Car turned over was able to restart. Happened again while approaching stop. Shut down before coming to complete stop. Had car towed to dealership. Found sluge build up and metal shavings in engine. Dealership now stating complete engine failure. Have extended warranty and will not cover engine due to "maintence" issue. Will cover replacement parts only. Mechanic stated issue will most likely not be resolved with part replacement wants oil change records.

On sunday (11/3) i was driving my 2012 kia sportage (a car we purchased used from kia of east hartford, ct and currently only has 68,000 miles on it) on a very busy interstate when the engine began to power down. I was barely able to make it to the shoulder of the road before the car seized up, a loud bang sounded from under the car, it began to smoke from underneath the car and oil covered the ground.the car was then towed to our local auto body shop where it was determined that the engine block suffered a quarter-sized hole from something being dispelled at a high rate of speed from the engine.when this was determined, we did some research and found there as a recall and we were never notified (see below).vin #[xxx]. We were told by the kia dealership that whatever caused our car to just stop working on the interstate?was not covered under the recall. It seems very suspect that given what exactly happened, this is not part of the recall.after much debate and over a month later still without a vehicle, kia has told us they will supply the parts but that we were still be responsible for the $3,000+ of labor.i?m sorry, but kia should stand behind their cars & engines.again, we only have 68,000 miles on our car. We don't agree with the directive of having to pay the labor fees.we would like someone to review this complaint and provide some direction for us. I have tried on multiple occasions to talk to someone beyond the mechanic & first line rep, but have not received a response from anyone at kia. This is the case # [xxx]for kia. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. [xxx]. Thank you.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2012 kia sportage lx 2.4l mpi engine with approximately 120k miles engine seized at moderate speed on the interstate.car was well maintainedbought second hand from brandon kia in tampa, fl in july 2018 with approx. 92k miles.engine seized on 14 dec 2020.towed to local repair shop and analyzed as replace engine.we read about the kia/hyundai engine problems so went to local kia dealer to inquire.the service rep said tow it in and they would analyze and if the seizure met the conditions, they would replace per kia guidance. So we did this, and were told "sorry, your vehicle isn't covered."same run around as everyone else is experiencing with kia.kia needs to admit every theta ii engine they produced between 2011 and 2014 had a manufacturing flaw and just bite the bullet and replace them when they fail.we are weighing our options now, none of which are good at this point.the engine replacement will cost what the car is worth, so if kia will not replace the engine or at least absorb some of the cost, the car is not worth repairing. Kia needs to stand by their products.no engine should fail at 120k miles for crankcase issues, which is what is happening with these theta ii engines. Please put pressure on kia to replace these engines, no exclusions!!!

On the way to florida on i-95 when my engine failed putting me and my family in harms way i have currently been without my vechicle since 9/4/2018 and kia has promised me multiple dates of when my vehicle will be fixed and it has yet to be fixed

Driving down the freeway at 80mph (speed limit in idaho), rpms started to rev over 6k, heard a ticking sound, then a very loud bang, followed by a big puff of black smoke, all in the span of around 20 seconds. Car died on the freeway, had to coast to get in emergency lane. Then the check engine light came on. There was no indication of engine issues until it was far too late. Thankful the cars behind me were paying attention or i would have been in an awful accident with an 18 wheeler. Mechanic found that engine had thrown a rod and put a hole in the engine block. 106k miles on the vehicle, did not expect to have engine failure this early. This vin is not part of the current recall, i believe it should be, as it has been properly maintained and should not have failed on the freeway with no indication of problems until it was too late.

As i was traveling from my home town to the airport in alt, my car began to lose speed. I didn't have enough speed to get to the next exit. Therefore i stopped on the side of the a very busy highway an called for a tow. I was towed to a service center where they replaced my transmission. At the end of my vacation, i picked up vehicle and drove back home. 3 weeks later, my engine failed while i was driving to work. Check engine light came on and it was making a loud whining sound. I took it to 2 different shops and was told the engine needs replacing. Tonight,i called kia and was told to take vehicle to kia for diagnosis. This vehicle is among the make model and year of those recalled for engine failure but my vin is not specifically listed at this time. What do i do?

I was on the highway driving at approximately 65 mph. The car suddenly shut down and i had to pull over since the car was slowing down. I was able to take an exit and when i came to a complete stop the car would not start. It was making a noise in the engine like it wanted to start but it couldn't. I had to tow my car home.

2012 kia sportage sx. Consumer writes in regard to vehicle engine failure.*as

My car had been running perfectly, no engine lights or warnings, and then one day i drove to work and everything was fine, but when i left to go home that evening i heard a weird knocking noise that only got worse until i got home. I had it towed to my mechanic as soon as he had an opening, and after a lot of work he was finally able to find that the issue was spun rod bearings and that there were metal shards in my oil pan. After doing some research after finding this out i learned of the kia recall sc147, which was for this exact issue. I then contacted kia because my car did not show up on the warranty list on their website, and the customer service representative told me that my car was in fact not covered under this recall, even though it has the defect that they were recalling so many vehicles for.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was then towed to finnin kia (4355 dodge st, dubuque, ia 52003) where it was diagnosed that the connecting rods failed and needed replacing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

My engine seized up at 79,000 miles despite the standard maintenance.i was driving home from work 25-50 mph consisting of 5 stoplights and 18 miles of driving.i was noticing a lack of power but otherwise no issues.i filled up the gas tank in hopes of driving it in to get serviced.i started the car back up at the gas station and the engine light turned on.i drove approximately .5 miles and the car stalled never to start again.i got a tow to russ darrow kia and they told me my engine was completely shot.i then had to get my engine replaced.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 55 mph, the contact heard an abnormal rattling, clunking noise and observed smoke coming from the engine. The instrument panel indicators illuminated and the engine stalled. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home and then to cooper kia (5056 commercial dr, yorkville, ny 13495, (315) 736-6660). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by cooper kia. The vehicle was then towed to fuccillo kia (3900 state st, schenectady, ny 12304, (518) 847-0800) where it was diagnosed that a rod went through the engine block. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but did not assist. The failure mileage was 85,000.

Engine began making noise and shook violently for a brief period, developed a knock in the mid or lower part of the engine, stopped driving car.took to local mechanic (where my 18 year old step daughter is going to college).local mechanic found the recall notice for 2012 kia sportages for engine failures and wanted the vehicle taken to a kia dealer for repair.i trailered the car for almost 200 miles to get to the kia dealership where we live in wyoming, but dealer told us that our car wasn't effected by the sc147 recall, even though every symptom from that recall is present in the car.knowing that kia wasn't going to cover, took the vehicle to my preferred mechanic, who found a large amount of metal shavings in the oil filter, recommended a replacement engine.the only engine available is not the same configuration as the original, unless buying a used engine which would probably have the same issue, and they are not comfortable putting that different engine in the car.my only option now is to take the vehicle to a kia dealer, who won't honor any warranty or repair under a recall that this car "doesn't apply to".it is literally the exact same engine that they recalled in other kia models, the 2.4l dohc theta 2, which was confirmed by my mechanic and kia customer car. Seeing there is a class action lawsuit out there for this exact reason, i guess that is my only option. Being the third kia my immediate family has owned, i can also promise this will be the last, as 90,000 miles on a car in this century is completely unacceptable, and kia should have to cover people who have had this loss.

Took vehicle in for recall and said that recall did not affect my vehicle.had another mechanic look at it and sure enough it needs an engine.

I was traveling north on a city street, came to a stop of a light and noticed the kia was shacking. I turned off the radio and air conditioning and rolled down the windows. The engine was knocking very load so i pulled off the city street into a nearby parking lot. The noise was loud so i started home i made it a few miles to my son's house and had him look at it. He said there was metal in the oil and he guessed the engine had gone. I left it there and called mcgrath thursday july 20th to let them know where it was and what had happened. They towed it to their shop and later drove it to the kia shop north of town. They called a few days later to let me know that i needed a new engine and that would cost $7,300.00

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 55 mph, the engine failed and the vehicle shut off. The vehicle was coasted over to the side of the road. The contact attempted to jumpstart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rod bearing failed. The vehicle was towed to redding kia (418 e cypress ave, redding, ca 96002, (888) 778-5635) who also diagnosed that the rod bearing failed. The dealer referred the contact to the manufacturer who stated that nothing could be done because the contact did not have proof of the oil changes. The vehicle was purchased from lithia ford of klamath falls (2833 washburn way, klamath falls, or 97603, (541) 205-4501) where they denied performing the oil changes. The failure mileage was 91,000.

I was driving an interstate highway at 65mph when the engine quit. Luckily, i was able to move it shoulder. I had it towed to a local engine repair shop who said the engine was locked up. The car has had oil changes every 3,000 miles and all service related recommendations. There is a similar recall for engine problems on kia's but when i called kia corporate they said my car was not included in recall. The estimate to replace and repair is in excess of $5,000. I am planning to donate the vehicle rather than repair it. I see similar issues on this model on your website. If kia retroactively recalls these vehicles, i request that they reimburse me the current value of the car.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, an abnormal sound was heard coming from the engine before the vehicle stalled. The check engine light illuminated after the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact linked his failure with nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the vin was not included. Ricart kia (4255 s hamilton rd, #210, groveport, oh 43125) was contacted and informed of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

I was driving at highway speeds going home and my engine started making a "knocking" noise. I lost power to the engine and could barely make it safely off the road.i was able to "limp" the car home with the engine still knocking, without a lot of power. I towed it to the kia dealership here in reno, nv and they diagnoses it as a premature failure of the crank shaft.the car has less than 77 thousand miles on it.because i am the second owner, kia will not issue me the manufacturer warranty.there is a class action lawsuit regards to this problem with kia and hundai motors here in the us for single port injector motors and in canada about the multi-port injector motors.i believe that with my car having the same engine problems as the class action lawsuit, my car should be included in the lawsuit.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving on the highway at driving 55 mph, when she noticed the oil light come on and saw smoke. When she pulled over and checked the hood she saw smoke and flames coming from underneath the hood. The contact quickly got her granddaughter out and quickly ran away from the vehicle. The vehicle exploded into flames.the vehicle made popping noises as it was on fire. The police and fire company came and put out the flames. A police report was filed and there were no injuries and the vehicle was towed by the city to an unknown location. The insurance company has yet to officially total the vehicle since the incident happened yesterday on a sunday. The contact had learned of numerous reports from the internet of kia vehicles catching on fire.the dealer west herr kia (3565 southwestern blvd, orchard park, ny 14127 (716) 239-4859) offered to get her into a new vehicle. The manufacturer had not been contacted yet. The vehicle was purchased used on 07/2019. The failure mileage was 45,000.

Driving westbound on i70 on june 3, in warrenton mo, my 2012 kia sportage suddenly lost all power at highway speed. I quickly pulled off the highway as the engine shut down and i coasted into a gas station. The car would not restart. I hired a tow truck and had the sportage towed 45 minutes away to jim butler kia. The next morning, the service manager informed me my engine had siezed and needed to be replaced. Kia will not warranty the engine even though they have replaced about 1.7 million 4 cyclinder engines for my model year kia and other years as well. There is an open recall for my sportage which i was never notified of for oil leaks that can cause engine failure. I have requested help from kia but they refuse to help me even though the car is within warranty time and miles but i am the second owner. Other 2nd owners have been covered and had their engines replaced at no charge i have read online many times. Kia knows they had a problem with millions upon millions of 4cyl and 6 cyl engines and replaced them but are for some reason refusing to help me with mine, even though i can prove i did the required maintenance. I was lucky i was able to pull off i70 without being rear ended by one of many 18 wheelers speeding by. I just want my car fixed like the millions of others like mine were!!

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While the vehicle was stationary and while driving various high speeds, the engine sputtered and the vehicle jerked and lurched forward. Jim bone kia (1255 santa rosa ave, santa rosa, california 95407) was contacted, but could not duplicate the failures. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

After driving home from a vacation trip, our car literally shutoff as we were crossing a major highway near home. I was able to coast back off the road. We were told by the dealership that it was the motor and it was needing to be replaced. They shared with us that there were 3 others sitting on their lot with the same problem and that there was an issue with those motors and that we should reach out to kia for assistance. My children were in the vehicle at the time. I previously owned another kia sportage, a 2001, that we had for well over 10 years and many miles over 100,000 that we absolutely loved as do i with this one. I just want to get it fixed and back in to it. The car is only 4 years old. What has changed??

My car has been recalled in relation to an oil leak which can cause stalling, engine to seize or car fire.have inquired to the dealer several times.global auto mall in north plainfield to no avail.

I was driving my car to work one morning and i heard a weird faint knocking sound coming from outside my car. Iimmediately drove straight to royal kia in tucson where i had purchased the car 4 years ago as a "certified" used car. At 3p that afternoon they called to tell me that it needs a new engine. It has 78000 miles on it. They claim my warrenty was "defaulted" on because over the past 4 years i was late getting the oil changed twice. I called corp kia and they basically said too bad and insinuated that because the late maintenance on the vehicle caused the engine to fail. I also spoke with tge gm of royal kia and he insisted the same thing. I have spoken to a number of mechanics and they said no way can that cause an engine to go with the low mileage. I have also had every service done on the car for 4 years. The only issue was the two late oil changes. I brought the recall up to the dealer and he said that it wasn't this engine. I say someone needs to investigate this further. They told me it would cost $7000 to replace the engine and that it really wasn't "worth it". There seem to be a lot of engine complaints on this website. Maybe another class action suit should be pursued.

Driving down the road at approximately 45-50 mph and the engine began knocking. Lost all power to the car. A few moments later, the car stopped completely in the middle of a busy intersection. I got out of the car and pushed it into a gas station parking lot. The car would crank but the knocking of the engine was becoming worse. I had the car towed to a shop where the problem was diagnosed as "rod knock" which is caused by a faulty motor, allowing metal shavings to enter and block the flow of oil to the motor. Not wanting to believe that i was going to have to pay $5,000 to replace the engine, i got a second opinion from a kia dealership in my home town. Not only did they confirm what the initial mechanic had diagnosed, but were very rude when asking us to "remove our car from their parking lot because unless we were going to pay them to fix it, it had no business being there." all oil changes have been done regularly and i have documentation for them all. Our vehicle had 74,000 miles on it and was kept in excellent condition. As of now, kia has done nothing to explain why nothing has been done about our problem, as well as many others who have had this same problem.

Very well maintained vehicle. All the sudden engine started knocking loudly and it didn't want to go very fast when i pressed gas. I was able to get it off the road. Vehicle had 144k miles. Repairman said the engine needed to be rebuilt or replaced. Quoted 5k which is more than the vehicle it worth. I see this is a common problem with this model vehicle. My vin number is not included in the recall.

Knocking noise coming from engine, have taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic as well as kia dealership service department (franklin, tn), both diagnosed the problem as needed a new engine ($5000-7,000). This vehicle as 145,000 miles, oil changed at every 5000 miles. There is no explanation or reasonable cause of engine failure except for manufacturing.

Got a call from a guy named colloto, kia corporate today. He said that they got my complaint from nhtsa. And that if my 2012 kia sportage engine gets recalled i would get a certified letter in the mail. That was it. Ok so you got my complaint. Now what?? i have been going back and forth taking to the dealership and kia corporate. Nobody knows anything, pointing fingers, getting the run around. Absolutely no compassion a no resolutions.kia is getting away with not recalling my car because my engine (dohc mpi theta-ll)!kia is saying it has to be gdi theta ll. I have never felt so let down by a company! they absolutely know what they are doing is criminal. My daughter could have been killed when the engine blew! she is only 20 years old. I don't understand how they could sell us a car that they knew was a ticking time bomb. Even if it does get the recall, i would be afraid that the dealership would not fix it correctly. They are mad that we are not opting to just buy another car to fix the problem.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 60-65 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate and lost power. The contact heard abnormal knocking and clunking noises, and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. Additionally, while checking the fluids, the contact noticed that the oil level was low. The vehicle was towed to vandevere kia (328 w market st, akron, oh 44303, (330) 253-8800) where it was diagnosed that the engine assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was similar to nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 73,000.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 60 mph, all the warning indicators illuminated, the power steering seized, and the engine failed. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and white smoke emerged from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine seized and needed replacement. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 13361451. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 80,600.

Unknown.the car made a rattling noise. When the car was being taken to a mechanic for inspection the car stalled. The vehicle was taken by a tow truck to the mechanic. The mechanic stated after disecting the engine, it fell apart.

March 2017 (89500 miles) check engine indicator was on.was experiencing engine vibration at high rpms, vibrations when shifting, and loss of engine power.kia dealer replaced timing chain.july 2017 (94156 miles) engine idling loud and rough, engine whines out, would not shift till reached high rpms. No engine light indicator at this time.kia dealer service advisor could not duplicate any concerns.after scan performed on vehicle, no codes thrown, suggested down stream catalyst be changed after after further inspection.we had catalyst replaced at muffler shop. The shop indicted that the catalyst was not faulty.december 2018 (113000 miles) engine vibration turned into engine knocking, decrease in power, continue to shift at high rpms. No engine light indicator.return to kia dealer, informed by dealer that we need a new engine.i feel my engine troubles begin in march of 2017, while under warranty, and was not diagnosed appropriately by the dealership.leading to an outofpocket expense for an engine.

While driving at 70 mph on interstate 15 in california on a friday afternoon, the car began jerking and losing power without any warning.the temperature gauge was normal, no lights of any kind came on.with great difficulty we were able to make it to the center median and waited 1-1/2 hrs for a tow from aaa to the nearest kia dealer in victorville, ca.they did not look at it until monday and it took a couple of days to get a straight answer from them as to when the car would be fixed.they finally told us the car needed a new engine!they have now had the car 2 weeks and they say they need a part called a camshaft assy (p/n 242002g700) which they will not have for another 3 weeks!in researching this situation, i see that other kia owners have experienced this same failure.it seems as though a recall and safety warning is needed!this could have caused a terrible accident.the car only has 27,000 miles and was purchased used from a kia dealer as a "certified pre-owned vehicle".at this time, we do not know how much this is going to cost.we had to pay for the tow, stay in a hotel, rent a car to get home as we live in utah.we were told we will have to go back there to pick up the car!we are thankful we weren't injured but someone else may be if kia doesn't do something about this situation.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving, she heard a loud noise from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle shutoff without warning. The vehicle was restarted but was immobile. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the lower engine was blown and needed to be replaced. The contact called the columbia ford kia dealer located at 234 willimantic rd, columbia, ct 06237, and was informed that there was no recall on the vin.the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The engine seized up while driving on local street.kia states that my engine (2.4l) was not part of recall.while this engine was unique to the sportage in 2012 it is the same 2.4l that they recalled in other vehicles.not explanation given for denial.it took kia almost 3 months to tell me that it was not covered which also raised some concerns.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 45 mph, a popping noise was heard coming from the engine compartment. After stopping the vehicle, oil was discovered under the engine area. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000.

While driving vehicle and trying to pass a slow moving vehicle on a highway it stalled with no warning, i had to coast to a safe location where i could pull over. Car was towed to rally kia in palmdale ca. Would not start again after stalling while driving with no warning lights flashing . I was told by rally that engine seized and had to be replaced. Car is still at location service advisor is larry.phone number 6613498017

My 2012 kia sportagestopped abruptly on the right hand side of interstate 295 in nj.i was just before the #20 exit.a large amount of oil drained from under my car.i called aaa and had it towed to kia in cherry hill nj.i was told the engine was completely ruined.it would cost me $6000. For a new engine.i had gone to kia initially about three weeks ago5/15/19 because i received nhtsa recall nu: 19v101 and i was having some problems with my car. I had to keep putting oil into it. And it did not drive well.they had never heard of the recall but checked my car and said that the oil had been leaking out of the engine and was allover the underbody of the car.inside the oil was badly mucked up and had to be thoroughly cleaned out and they had to take the engine out to do this. They would also replace the spark plugs although they were not bad but they had the engine out.it was called a defudge on the engine.this cost me $1,600.00 but they gave me a deal of $1,300 because i am a nice old lady. And they wanted to give me a break.the car was not good, it sputtered, and puffed out smoke as drove.it would not start right, and in town driving it would stall and sputter.i returned to kia on 5/21/19. They recleaned it again. It continued to have problems and sputter when stating up.the day before the engine light went on but then went off again. 6/6/19 aaaflat bed delivered car to kia and it is immobile. I am 74 years old i called kia by 9:00am i was told to call aaa and they arrived at 10:53.i had been on the highway side of the road for 31/2 hr.i was in kia for 6 hours waiting.i have had 4 kias and never had this problem. There was not any indication given to me that the engine was in jeopardy.only thing that was mentioned was they were trying not to have to replace some hoses? they are trying to help me out with the cost. It has 109.+ miles

While driving 65 mph down the highway..the kia died..got the car to the shoulder..i had it towed to my mechanic who told me the engine had seized up..he could not believe an engine that clean and well maintained would just seize up..kia told me to take it to the dealer..i had it towed to ferguson kia in broken arrow oklahoma where i bought it..they said they wanted to find out why it did that. Well the dealer said that i would need to pay for them to tear my engine apart..that kia said it was not part of the recall..even though it did exactly what the engines did that were recalled. A used engine will cost me $5800..and that has 70,000 miles on it..and it is a kia engine..that will probably do the same thing. I loved this car..i took excellent care of this car..i could have been killed if other cars were around when it died..i had no idea of these problems the kia's were having..they are dangerous!

Our 2012 kia sportage broke down over a month ago after my wife and daughter had just got off the pa turnpike, they had stopped at a mall an hour from home after traveling all day.when they returned to the car from shopping,it wouldn't start.it was towed to gateway kia of warrington at the advice of kia corporation of america, because that was the closest dealership.after sitting there for almost five days and no call from them, and multiple inquiries by us, they finally told us that it was engine failure.they ran basic diagnostic tests and never went any further as far as looking into the engine.because we were the second owner off a one year lease, we weren't eligible for the original 10 year/100,000 warranty.our warranty was now 5 years/ 50,000 miles.our car has 70,0000 miles. So not covered we have been told.we kept good care of this car with regular oil changes and state inspections.after being told that we were not going to be covered, we started researching this problem. Soon after we found a law firm that was heading a class action suit against kia.the lawsuit alleged that kia has an ongoing problem with some of their engine, which includes our vehicle and engine. We were also notified that the law firm had ceased to pursue the suit because kia had agreed to fix the engines for the vehicles included in the suit.kia has denied to cover our car under this special extended warranty which would include 10 years/120,000 miles now.we have been passed around and denied all the up to the corporate offices "escalation office", which has ultimately told us that we have been denied and have reached the highest office available for complaint/appeals and there is nothing that we do any longer.we still owe almost $10,000 on this car, which will be a total loss if it isn't fixed under extended warrantyor by us at a cost of almost $5000.

2012 kia sportage. Consumer writes in regards to reimbursement for vehicle repairs. *ldthe consumer stated while driving the vehicle shifts to neutral for 10 to 15 seconds. The dealer could not duplicate the failure. The consumer requested to be reimbursed for recall repair 19v101.

Vehicle began to suddenly make knocking noises while driving on the highway. Driver was able to make it short distance home before engine completely seized. Towed to kia dealership who confirmed the engine had seized (pistons became completely stuck and unable to move). Service manager said only fix is to replace the motor,

As driving down the highway at 65 we noticed a abrupt loss of power followed shortly after by several warning lights and vehicle engine shutting off.after safely pulling off side of road i popped the hood to look for any obvious issues non were found no smoke, smell of burning or hot, checked oil level which was fine.got back in vehicle and it restarted fine but has a audible click noise, we decided to have the vehicle trailered home to prevent any further damage.when this took place there were no active check engine lights or any info on temp gauge that was out of the ordinary.the next day i checked the oil again and decided to start the vehicle once again started with no issue but has a audible click that gets louder with applied rpm.went ahead and put in drive to check if transmission was functioning and appears to work in drive and reverse only moved a few feet then shut it off.we seen that kia has had several recalls over manufacturing defects for engines that cause these malfunctions but according to the dealer ours does not fall in that category.

Hi i came home on lunch one afternoon the car drove perfectly fine no issues what's so ever. About an hour passed and it was time to go back to work so i put the key in the ignition and they car never started again. It sounded to me like it wasn't getting any fuel so i thought i'll change the fuel pump..that's when i learned that there was a fuel pump from a polaris artticat snowmobile that was used by the manufacturer which ok i thought was funny at the time but finding a replacement part was a nightmare..i finally found a replacement part which i just had to get a whole new fuel pump and assembly but when it didn't start after that i didn't know what to do. I took it to vip and had them take a look they called me back the next day and said they had no clue what was wrong with it and that i needed to come grab it and bring it to the dealer where i bought it from. That's when i learned the engine somehow stopped getting compression and that blew up merchants said i needed a new engine that's $7,000 and when i went to find one that's when i found out it's discontinued gee wonder why so then i go to kia and tell them now i found out there's all these recalls out on kia sportages but my vin# doesn't match now how does that work so now i'm out a car and $7,000 and still paying on a car i don't have any more. So how am i to fix a discontinued motor and a polaris artic cat snowmobile fuel pump. By the way i've had the car less than 2 years and only put 30,000 miles on it ridiculous.

On 11/09/2018 our son was driving home after visiting his father in the hospital.he called and said the kia had began shaking and the engine light came on so he immediatly turned into a parking lot .the car made some loud noises and completly lost power before he could park in a space.this was around midnight and he is a teenager so he was really upset .as i was at the hospital with his dad he called a friends parent to pick him up .the next day we had car towed to kia dealer.the following week the dealer called and said engine was unrepairable .as soon as my husband was released from hospital we went to dealer on the following friday and got quote of over 5000.00 to fix with a new short block engine.of course our vin is not included in the recalls of this engine but we feel certain this failure is the result of kias faulty engine.this car did have 144,000 miles that were interstate commuter miles and i had always kept the oil changed.prior to this the only thing repaired was the radio and a new battery.there was zero warning of any approaching problem with the engine.it did not use oil, drip any fluids or give any indication anything was wrong. Fortunalty this happed late at night with no traffic and not to me during my daily interstate commute.

Bearing wear may result in engine seizure.when taken to the dealership to find out why "check engine light" came on, this was found to be the cause although the dealership seems to have messed up something while checking the vehicle and are saying that the motor needs to be replaced.

My engine seized and stopped while driving. Engine began knocking earlier that day with no prior warnings, lights illuminating, etc. I wasn't even able to get it home or to the dealership before it died. We perform regular maintenance on our car and there is no reason it should've died so soon. It needs a completely new engine now. Similar models are already on recall and a pending lawsuit for similar models but they don't seem to include the mpi engine. Only turbo and gdi are included, which is wrong because i've found many reports of this engine failing too. There's a big problem here.

Purchased 2012 kia sportage 2 years ago from original owner.it is now 80,000.while traveling out of town on a hwy the engine started making terrible noise and lost power, i was able to squeek in slowly to the nearest town.kia dealership determined blew up.no warning.has had regular maintenance.kia recalled these years of the sportage but only for the gdi engine.however after research it is apparent that many owners o the dohc had the same problems.they are saying the vin is not covered by the recall.

Driving to work when the car made a sudden knocking noise then completely shut off. I was on a curve in a road and this was a dangerous place to be broken down. I had the car towed to kia gateway in warrington, pa. And was told the car had a catastrophic engine failure.there were no warning lights prior to this failure. I also have maintainted the car with proper oil changes and maintenance.

I was driving down the road at 45 mph probably a few hundred yards from getting on the highway when black smoke came out of the exhaust of my sportage and it completely went dead. Luckily, i had a place to stop just to the left of the highway entrance. I can't imagine what could have happened had this occurred at highway speeds. I learned from the dealer that this is actually a known problem with the kia theta engines. The bearings and rods in my engine were apparently shredded and the engine seized. While the dealer is paying for the damage under warranty, the car will be returned to original state meaning the engine and the car will be extremely dangerous. If what happened to me happens to anyone driving on the highway, it's very easy to imagine the possibility of a fatal crash. These engines need to be recalled and have a proper fix in place before someone dies. I've now read hundreds of complaints similar to mine on the internet so action needs to be taken beyond the class action lawsuit that was filed in june for this very same issue.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated upon depression of the accelerator with an unknown warning light illuminated. The contact initially took the vehicle to flood ford of east greenwich (2545 s county trail, east greenwich, ri 02818) where they repaired the camshaft and other cylinders within the engine. Four years later, the contact stated that while his son was driving at highway speeds, he began to hear an abnormal ticking sound coming from the engine. The contact also stated that the check engine warning light illuminated intermittently on the instrument panel. The vehicle then began to stall as the contact's son pulled the vehicle off to the shoulder of the highway. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where they diagnosed the vehicle with engine failure. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the vin wasincluded. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the vin was not under recall. The contact was provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine) and called the manufacturer and was advised to take the vehicle to a local dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to global auto mall (1099 rt. 22 west, north plainfield, nj 07060) however, after four hours, the contact was informed that the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated while driving. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

Terrible noise while driving; parked it for towing; when started it quit!just complained to kia customer service.this vin is currently outside the engine recalls---you can't tell me that there are not more engines involved in the current recall!!!!!kia and hyundai are just waiting us out...and i'm getting pissed off!

Engine totally seized up while driving.we managed to get off to the side of the road. We were told this particular engine was not under a kia recall but the highway safety of canada is pursuing it . They are saying thar kia did not go far enough on their engine recalls.there are complaints filed with the highway safety of canada

I was driving in the middle of a busy highway when my car all the sudden lost all power. I luckily was able to get to the side of the road. The car however wouldturn over. Electric worked butengine make loud noise. I had to have it towed back home, 2 hours away, to have a dealership take a look at it. The bearing wore from the engine completely locked up the engine. Found out vehicle has recall on some 2012 sportage but not mine will cost $5000 to fix

My 2012 kia sportage has a theta 11 engine that blew at 73000 miles on it. The reason your car is not apart of the recall because my engine is mpi theta 11 engine.how can we get kia to re word and say all theta 11 engine should be recalled?

While driving on the highway, we heard a thump from our 2012 kia sportage.when we got home, my husband checked the engine and he found we had no oil. We never had a check engine or oil light come on and never had an oil spot under our car. We took it to our kia dealer and was told it needed a new engine. After reading other complaints about the same issue, i realize we were very lucky we were able to make it home with our car that night. Our kia had less than 35,000 miles on it and we changed the oil regularly , so we just knew it would be under warranty. However, because my husband did some ofthe oil changes himself, they would not honor the warranty- he didn't have all of the receipts for the oil and filters since 2012. The receipts we could provide from businesses that did oil changes and some copies of receipts my husband could get from the auto parts stores showed that the oil was changed often, but we didn't have all the receipts. Regardless, a vehicle with less than 35,000 miles, with proof of several oil changes, not ever having a check engine or oil light come on, and no oil spots where it's parked every day- should not run out of oil and need a new engine. I knew this had to be a defect with kia engines and after reading many complaints from other kia owners, it's obviously a known and dangerous defect and needs to be addressed.

Has a bad knoockin the motor.

The hyundai 2.4l engine (g4kc, g4ke, g4kg, g4kj) belongs to the theta/theta ii engine family. It is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with multi-point or direct injection depends on the generation and in which vehicle it is used. Like other engines, hyundai shares this power unit with kia brand. The 2.4l is very similar to the 2.0l version of the same theta series, with slight differences due to the increased engine displacement and internal loads.the engine has aluminum open-deck cylinder block and aluminum cylinder head. The increased displacement was achieved by installing a new crankshaft with 97 mm stroke (two-liter engine has 86 mm stroke). The cylinder bore is also larger. In this case, the engine got new pistons with a diameter of 88 mm (instead of 86 mm pistons). The cylinder head has 4 valves per cylinder (16 valves total) and double overhead camshafts (dohc). The crankshaft drives the intake and exhaust camshafts by using a timing chain. The first theta engines use the continuously variable valve timing (cvvt) for intake timing only. The later generation, theta ii engine, is equipped with the variable valve timing system cvvt on both camshafts. There are not hydraulic lifters/tappets in the valvetrain of the 2.4l engine; it uses shimless bucket lifters (clearance adjustment is required about every 60k miles).most of hyundai's and kia's 2.4 engines are equipped with multi-point fuel injection (mfi or mpi). The newest engines, named as 2.4 gdi, have direct injection.

My well-maintained kia sportage engine spontaneously seized causing complete loss of the vehicle. After providing all maintenance records, kia refused to replace the engine to spite it seizing for no reason.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 30 mph, the contact heard a loud abnormal noise underneath the hood. The contact observed smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact pulled over and had the vehicle towed to their residence. The dealer was not contacted. An independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and change the oil. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be repaired. The engine had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 101,000.

My 17yr old son was driving the car when it started making a noise and wouldn't accelerate.he slowed down to pull over and the steering wheel didn't want to turn. He said it was heavy. We had the car towed home and checked out by a mechanic who stated it was rod bearings. I remembered a couple years ago getting a letter from nhtsa and kia mentioning they were investigating a problem with the engine. I looked up and it said no recalls on my car. The car has the exact same problem as the recall same year and everything. The car only has 106 thousand on it and has always received all scheduled maintenance. The mechanic said had my son kept driving the car the engine would have seized which could have caused a serious accident. My son was driving on a busy rural road with a lot of curves. We have a lot of oilfield trucks and traffic with vehicles that can't stop fast and had my son broke down on a curve or bottom of a hill he could have been seriously injured or worse. I think the recall needs to be investigated more. Kia said my vehicle was not included in the recall because my engine was manufactured in a different facility. My car has the exact problem as the recall same year model everything.

Driving on a southern california freeway on july 28, 2019, the engine of our 2012 kia sportage suddenly stalled. Brought it to the garden grove kia dealer the next day and met their service advisor martha gudino. She promised that the dealer would let us know by 2p what the issue was. She didn't call until after 4p with bad news: a new engine was needed for the princely sum of $9,087.60 plus tax!in hindsight, we now know that martha was probably huddling with management on a strategy of disinformation. Not only did she not mention that there was an oil leak recall on this model but she said nothing about the ongoing class action suits, the car fire reports, and the 21 engine complaints lodged on carcomplaints.com.when we picked up the car the next day, i, of course, mentioned the class action suit filed by andrea smolek and the numerous complaints mentioning exactly what our service advisor had described: "oil was black and slight sludged [sic]. Oil control valve (ocv) had sludge and metal shavings." the service manager ' gudino was nowhere in sight ' remained silent about the issue and just collected his $129.00 for the diagnosis, which would have been refunded had we forked over that $10,000 they wanted for a new engine. We didn't pay and had the car transported back to las vegas.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving up a hill at 45 mph, a clicking noise was heard and the engine suddenly stalled. Upon inspection, it was discovered that oil leaked from the engine and a part from the engine connecting rod was found on the ground. The vehicle was eventually towed to royal kia(4333 east speedway, tucson, az) where it was diagnosed that the engine was severely damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v907000 (engine). The contact indicated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 82,000.the consumer stated vehicle was repaired at owners expense.

On 02/15/2020,i noticed a knocking on right side of engine,i made a a appointment with folsom lake kia on 02/16/2020 for 02/18/2020.explained to service department my concerns about engine knock on right side of engine, one tech said sounds like rod bearings, where i thought sounded like idler pulley just behind alternator. So after dropping off tech said we will check next day when engine was cold, i received a call on the 19th saying it was the tensioner pulley, which was under warranty, so i said replace it. They had to order parts and that they had a loaner car for me, so back to dealership i go (21 miles each way), i got another call on the 21st wanting me to come back and listen to engine with the belt off ,don't know want that has to with it. They said we still have to order parts, will call you when ready. On the 26th of february they called an said it's done come pick up. I had to send my wife due to i work nights, she called me when she got home and said she believes engine is still making knocking noise. Dealership replaced tensioner pulley ildler pulley and new belt.idler pulley and belt not under warranty had to pay $129 fpr an $80 pulley and $40 belt. I'm still upset that when i took car in the first place tech said all was covered under warranty.10/100mile. Also while the many days i was in contact with service department they said they were sending data collected from diagnostic tests to kia multiple times. So i have made another appointment with a different dealership closer to home for march 2nd(i went to folsom lake because that's where i purchased new in 2012} i believe the engine is coming apart internally and do not want my wife to drive it. When car is first started, put into drive engine makes knocking noise stationary and in motion, at first noise would go away when it got to operating temperature noise would quiet down some. Getting worse

I was driving on the highway and got over to pass in the left lane and as soon as i gave it gas, my car died and i had to coast back over onto the shoulder.

Driving from arizona to vegas on highway 93 northbound , no prior problem, no warning suddenly heard a vibrating or ticking noise, car suddenly wouldn't excell and lost rpm, then i heard a few thumps and the check engine and battery light came on. I glided to a stop on side of freeway and car wouldn't start. Called tow. Smoke was coming from under hood. Had signs of leaking some fresh fluid. Was told engine seezed. Possibly but only 52,000 miles.

While driving on freeway at 70 mph car engine slowed to 40 without warning then down to 20, almost causing multiple cars to crash into me.managed to drive car directly to kia dealer while going from driving fine, to slowing to 20 mph to shaking when at a stop light when i dropped off car to dealer they could not find anything wrong.says i have to pick back up.prior to this, while on freeway engine would wind and rev rpm without moving or accelerating.had kia computer hooked up for weeks and it did not record anything. I have had it in numerous times and they cannot find anythingwrong.very disappointed with my choice in kia.

On june 10,2019 i was exiting off a ramp from the highway making a left turn at approximately 35 mph while the car was in motion it just stalled.i pulled safely into a turn lane and the car started back up.i drove it to the kia dealership and explained what happened. They told me i needed a new alternator.i replaced the alternator and 5 days later on june 15, 2019 while driving 60 mph down a highway in the passing lane it just died again.no noises were made with either stall, no knocking, no jerking.absolutely no signs there was something wrong with the engine.i was able to get over safely, however this time the car didn't start back up.it was towed to a local shop and they told me the engine had failed.i asked why, they said they had no idea because the car is in excellent shape and they could tell it's been maintained.we had a second mechanic go to the shop for a second opinion. He thought maybe the timing belt.however, he said the engine was dead and the belt was not the cause because it was in good condition.kia has an extended warranty for these engine failures, however, they will not fix my car.there are several reports of this exact situation.my car is the same make, model, year and falls within the mileage of the extended warranty coverage for engine failure and i just want the car fixed.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 70 mph, the contact passed an oncoming vehicle and heard an abnormal noise coming from the engine. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rod bearing failed. The contact called santa ana kia (1425 auto mall dr santa ana, ca 92705, (714) 384-3780) to schedule an appointment for a second diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 114,000.

Driving at 50 mph down highway, hear a knocking sound come form the engine. Car seized without warning on the highway - had to coast to the shoulder. My vin does not show up in the recall but has the exact same issue. Car currently at mechanic.

While driving down the road my car stalled and all dash lights came on. I was able to get to side of road. I thought it was a loose battery cable. Checked everything and tried to start and it turned right over. Then while driving i started to hear a knock then a boom and thud and the car shutoff. I was able to coast to the side of the road and wait for a tow. But now i have a 4 inch hole in the side of my engine and kia is saying my vehicles vin is not on the recall list.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving 55 mph, all the instrument panel indicators illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over, turned off and restarted the vehicle; however, the engine made a knocking noise. The vehicle traveled approximately ten more miles before shutting down. The vehicle could not be restarted and was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine jumped and bent the valves. The mechanic stated that the engine needed to be replaced and the contact was informed to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer advised the contact to tow the vehicle to dorsch ford lincoln kia (2641 eaton rd, green bay, wi 54311, (920) 469-3000). The manufacturer promised to reimburse the contact for the tow and the initial diagnostic test. The dealer verified that the engine needed to be replaced and wanted to charge the contact $9,100 for the repair. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine) and the dealer refused to pay for the towing, diagnostic testing, and repair. The failure mileage was 65,000.

2 months ago my daughters kia died at a stop sign, it would start but not idle or drive. Had it towed to midtown kia here in tulsa where all, and lots of problems, have been repaired. Gave them the issues and paid them to diagnose the problem. We bought the car new from a dealer in colorado but all repairs were done at local dealer. Took a week and my calling them to be told the starter was bad and it would take $424 to replace it to diagnose the problem the starter worked fine when we brought it in and the starter doesn`t need to be working to plug in the obd reader to check for fault codes! had the car towed back home, i am mechanically inclined and have proper tools. I borrowed an obd reader and it returned fault code for camshaft position sensors, i replaced those and still wouldn`t run. Cleared the codes and got faulty crankshaft sensor code, replaced that and still no success. Cleared codes and got faulty valve timing solenoid code, replaced those, car started and ran 2 days before engine locked up. Replace oil and filter regularly with mobil 1 synthetic, took proper care of vehicle as required. Vehicle has 180,000 miles.

Driving on farm roads, started hearing faint noise in engine. Then the car lost all power (while going 70-75). Also lost breaking for a short amount of time.was able to get off road safely. Had diagnostic test done. Seized engine. Kia says there is no recall on my vehicle. There are other recalls for similar issues on the same make and year though. ??a rod was completly shattered in the bottom end. Engine has to be replaced.

On november 12 i purchased the kia sportage ex 2012and it was transferred on november 16 from pittsburgh to the dhillon auto center workshoplocated at penndel pennsylvania being attended by the mechanic (the vehicle was stationary) who after performing the usual technical inspections found that the engine did not work properly and after a short period of ignition, it smoked intensely and went out almost immediately; insisting a couple of times more and continued checking other components of the ignition system after which he did not insist more and reaching the conclusion that the engine was internally damaged.before which i felt frustrated and confused and without knowing who to turn to. Until doing the proper historical monitoring of this vehicle i find out that this car has a pending recall to be solved by kia.therefore i come to you to know how to proceed and make the due claim for this pending recall

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving at 20 mph and when depressing the accelerate pedal, she began to hear an abnormal noise and the vehicle began to vibrate. The contact stated the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to park on the side of the road and after 5 minutes she restarted the vehicle and drove to her residence but continued to experience the failure. The vehicle was taken to local dealer (rick case kia located at 3190 satellite blvd, duluth, ga 30096, (678) 321-1590) and was being serviced at the moment. The vin was associated to nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine). The vehicle had not been repaired as of yet. The manufacturer had been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.

My wife and i were on our way to park city, ut for a family trip and after we dropped off our stuff off at the hotel we headed to heber city, ut. On our way, the car started making a ticking sound when the gas was pushed. And then the car died. Without any warning or anything. It just died. We have not had any issues with this car. We have taken great care of this car. The next day we went and had the car towed to a kia dealership, and they determined that the engine had locked up and that i needed a new engine. I have had this car for 8 months, and it only has 108, 000 miles on it. This is insane.

While driving my car, it began to slow down and drive really strange. All of the sudden it cut off . I never had an engine problem, i do the scheduled maintenance on the car. My car would not turn over. I took it to car max the place where i got it from and they thought it was the starter at first. Upon doing a diagnostic test, they realized the engined seized. This came out of nowhere, the car was running perfectly fine. Kia statedthey could not fix it because it was not involved in the recall. They won't even look at the car. My car is doing everything that everyone stated happened to theirs, and it was covered under the recall.

I financed my 2012 sportage about year and half ago and since the turbo has began to leak which being under warranty was replaced but now my oil pan and filter is leaking oil and failrly good amount, so i noticed this because the dash light for low wiper fluid came on and when i tried to pop hood by pulling interior latch i learned that my hood release cable had disconnected not only from the interior latch but from my main hood latch as well so while under my car trying to figure out how i could fix this i could see the oil that had been leaking and was coming from pan and filter. I cant check the level due to the cable malfunction and learning about these recalls im scared to drive my vehicle .

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced a loss of engine power and a rod fractured within the engine assembly. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa action number: rq17003 (engine) and nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 133,000.

I purchased this car in september of 2017 with only 40,000 on it & never had 1 issue with the car. However, on april 16th of 2020 i was on my way to work when i heard i ticking sound from the engine & 30 seconds later the car shut down.i was able to steer it off the highway on to the shoulder.i called for a tow & the car was taken to the mechanic shop & the engine had to be replaced due to a spun rod bearing. I was shocked & disappointed due the vehicle only had 84,647 miles on the odometer.the cost of the engine & a rental car was about $6,400 all together!!!

Premature bearing wear in engine. Bearing broken, hole in the engine. Car cut off in the middle of the highway and started leaking oil. Had to manually push vehicle onto the side of the road to safety. There is a safety recall for this make/model/year but not for this specific vin number. *dt

Driving north on i-75 and was passing, went to move back over the to the right lane and a noise and then black smoke and oil all over the freeway, pulled to the side and engine was dead and seased.

1/1/2020 i was driving down the highway in the middle of nowhere kansas, hours from home. I had to stop for about 5 minutes because of a stretch of highway that was down to 1 lane for construction and had a temporary stoplight (instead of a pilot car). When it was finally my turn to go, my car started making a loud knocking sound, violently shaking, and wouldn't accelerate. Then all the warning lights and check engine lights turned on. I pulled over and called roadside assistance which towed me to the nearest mechanic. The mechanic said the engine was shot, the rods and stuff oroken, knocking a hole in the engine. I finally get it towed back home 1/3/2020(hours away) and dropped off at the dealership. I finally hear back from the dealership1/13/2020 and they confirm i need a new engine, but claim the current recall nor the manufacturer's warranty will cover the repairs (approximately 100,600 miles, only 600 miles over warranty). What i've read in my research of 3 recalls and about the class action lawsuit is exactly what has happened to my car's engine (except no fires thank goodness). I'm left with no car and no idea what to do.

One day me and my wife were driving around the city running some errands when i noticed a sound coming from the engine area. So i admediatly headed home. When i arrived i opened the hood of my 2012 kia sportage to hear a knocking sound. After confirming the sound was my engine i call kia telling them what was going on, they made me a appointment date and told me to call my extended warranty company to notify them of the situation and get authorization to do an inspection. So i did and they told me to take it in while they investigate. As a couple days passed i took my car in an immediately they knew what the problem was and guaranteed me kia would handle the problem. As three weeks went bye i called the warranty company to see what was taking so long and they began to say that the reason for the problem was my fault due to lack of maintenance and if i wanted the engine fixed it would cost $8000. I refused repairs and went to recover my vehicle. As i drove away in my vehicle i noticed they gave it back making a louder knocking. As i proceeded to go home my car suddenly stalled in the middle of the street with traffic behind me. The car would not turn on anymore. I pushed it to the side of the road were i had to call for a tow truck to take it home were my vehicle has been for the last two months.. Kia and the extended warranty company still refusing to do any repairs without me paying $8000 for a new engine.

The contact called on behalf of the owner of a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 60 mph, the contact heard a loud knocking noise coming from the engine and the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and drove to kia of vacaville (located at 651 orange dr, vacaville, ca 95687,(707) 392-4623) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000.

Vehicle engine light came one while driving, had loss of power and engine began to shake and had a loud knocking noise.pulled over to side of road and had to have the vehicle towed to kia dealer.upon evaluation i was notified that a new engine was required.vehicle only has 63,964 miles and as a second owner, it is not a warranted item.engine replacement estimate is $6390.00 plus tax.

At approximately 5:30am, i was driving down the freeway.my kia sportage suddenly made a loud bang, and the engine stalled.it also shut off the headlights, and disabled the power steering, while on a curve, going 70mph.the power assisted brakes were also not working, because the engine shut down.i managed to pull the vehicle over without incident, but was almost hit by several vehicles that could no longer see me, because my lights were off.the engine would not start up again, and i had to have the vehicle towed home.this is the 3rd time this vehicle has done this, and kia refuses to repair the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v750000 (engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. While her husband was driving at various speeds and was flagged down by a bystander who noticed flames from under the hood. No injuries were sustained. The contacts husband managed to veer to the shoulder of the road. No incident report was made however the police were contacted. The fire department came out to the scene but was not needed. The vehicle was towed by the contacts insurance to a repair shop where its awaiting details for damages. The contact mentioned that the oil was changed 3 weeks prior to the failure that occurred. Kia of lake charles 1900 siebarth drive, lake charles, la 70615 (844) 203-6075 was contacted and had to schedule an appointment to have the vehicle diagnosed on march 2nd 2021.the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

I was driving with my daughter at 7:30 pm on santiago canyon road orange, ca. When i noticed a clicking sound and caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye of a light reflecting off the road. I instantly pulled over and told my daughter to get out. The car took about 3 to 4 minutes to totally go up in flames. I was never contacted about any potential problems with this car or anything about the kia sorrento we also own. Now i won't be driving that car either.

Our kia 2012 sportage began to suddenly make knocking noise while driving on the high way . Reviewing informationi expect the worst . New motor!!!!

I was drive down the hwy and the truck just cut off on thw hwy and little smoke came from the hood i had to try push the truck to the side of the road and the truck never crank again its dead

My vehicle stopped in the middle if a street light . I took it to kia shop they said the engine died which before that i never got warnings . I know kia does have problems with the engine . They are covering the engine but i have to pay for labor which is a little over 3,000 dollars . I'm not satisfied but i need my car .

With 88,110 miles on the car, while driving, the engine completely shut off.upon stopping the car, and restarting the car, the car has a loud knocking noise.i took the car to the dealership and they said it needs a new engine, for $6800.after researching this issue, i have come to learn, it is very common among the 2012 kia sportage.

Blinking engine light while driving

So he star to used all the oil without reason the dealer check the motor ad say the motor burn the oil but he cannot find the problem so 2 day after i was running 80 km when the car turn on engine light im parking and turn off the car towing the car dealer say engine broke down because was no breathe, el mecanico dijo que el flujo de motor de aceite a los cojinetes e las bielas se desgatastarony por ende fallo el motor.

Traveling home on interstate highway at 75 mph when i suddenly heard an unfamiliar noise coming from the engine compartment. A few seconds later, some louder noises came from the engine area and i lost all power and lots of lights lit up on the dash. I could immediately smell burning oil and noticed blue smoke in my rear view mirror and what looked like a circular part sliding on the pavement behind me which i knew was some part from the car. I pulled over onto the shoulder and lifted the hood and saw flames on the rear of the engine on the exhaust area. I used 10 or 12 handfuls of snow from the ditch to throw on the fire to get it out. Had it towed to the nearest city and had to rent a car to get home. I know that the engine blew up. I saw oil from the engine on the shoulder right up to where it came to rest.

The contact is an attorney whose client owns a 2012 kia sportage. While the client's wife was driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (rick case kia sunrise 14500 w sunrise blvd, sunrise, fl 33323), but the failure could not be replicated. The failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer again and the failure recurred as the dealer drove the vehicle. It was diagnosed that the crankshaft and crank position sensors failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The contact spoke to the dealer who stated that if no warning indicators illuminated, they could not assist. The failure recurred once again. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine) and took the vehicle back to rick case kia for an engine inspection. The dealer performed an oil change, replaced the dipstick, and stated that the vehicle passed per kia's specifications. The failure had not recurred at the time of the complaint. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the contact should make an appointment with the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 59,918.

Left work and onto highway in rush hour doing around 20 mph.within a mile of work, oil light came on and the engine seized.had to push car off road in large city construction zone of only two lanes with no shoulder lanes available.the vehicle had gotten regular and proper oil changes using synthetic oil.after the event, checking the oil, there was oil still on the dipstick.this is a vehicle that has been involved in a recent recall, and yet, for some reason the claim is my car/engine is not involved.i see many others reporting the same thing with kia engines from this timeframe being given a similar song and dance.the original recall was expanded.i would say it should be expanded again. I was fortunate with it being rush hour that i was not going full highway speed.the engine had 150,000 miles on it, but it was due to averaging almost 27,000 a year in mostly highway miles.

Driving down freeway at 70 miles an hour when engine started knocking and car stopped, took to shop they said that two rods blew through the block and can't figure out why since there's still all the oil in car. Extremely scary to happen on freeway!! they are saying at 83,000 miles it's not covered since i'm the second owner- still owe money on car. Gonna cost 6,000 to fix since used engine is 4,000 and then u have labor. Can't believe kia is allowing so many to have this problem and they refuse to help.

2012 kia sportage with dohc engine.wife was on a business highway when all the sudden the made a rattle sound from under the hood then the motor started making a loud knocking sound then it started loose power.there was a recall on 2012 kia sportage with a different engine recall 17v224000a maching error in the bearings which will cause engine seize and possible crash.only 109426 miles on it. Sounds like possibly the same issue as other engine had.

I've 2012 kis sportage with 67000 miles. Engine just died while driving on the local street doing 35 miles per hour. Kia promised 10 year / 100,000 mile warranty for original owner but they're refusing to honor their promise. I was informed by kia dealer that the warranty is only good for 5 years / 60,000 miles.

Engine seized while driving. There are other 2012 kia sportages under the engine recall but ours isn't even though it's the same problem. The engine seized and everything shut off causing us to have to pull over on side of the road in the middle of nowhere.

This information is from mechanic:engine began to smoke, vehicle drove into parking lot, put in park, opened hood, grey/green smoke noticed, engine would not restart. Mechanic stated that the engine seized up - would not restart - had to be towed to mechanic.

Over the last six months or so, my kia sportage suv have been stalling periodically without warning.i never know when it is going to happen.i can be driving on the highway at 65 mph or 25 mph and it will stall.it has happened on sunny days as well as rainy days.i've contacted gateway kia in denville nj many times complaining about this issue to no avail.the service manager joe told me to try using sunoco premium gas to no avail.i also had the manifold changed but the stalling still happens.i've contacted kia corporation and was told by bruce hartd since my car has over 187,000 miles (mostly highway miles) and since the dealership haven't been able to reproduce the stalling there is nothing kia can do.i was told by kia corporation that my car is not part of their engine stalling recall to be announced may 19th.i think it should be included because my car engine is also stalling making it very dangerous for me to use it but it is the only form of transportation i have to get back and forth to work.please help!

My 2012 kia sportage lx 2.4l (109,000 miles) started making a knocking noise while driving earlier this week. I took it in for my local mechanic to examine it. They said the noise is coming from inside the engine, and it is a sign of internal engine failure. I started searching online and found all the information about the engine recall of various kia's, but my trim is not included in the safety recall. My car is showing the same signs, and yet i cannot get it fixed. The cost of the new/used engine would be more than the total worth of the car.

My wife and i were on our way to park city, ut for a family get together and after we dropped off our stuff at the hotel we headed to heber city, ut. On our way, the car started making a ticking sound when the gas pedal was pushed. And then the car died, without any warning. The next day we went and had the car towed to a kia dealership and they determined that the engine had seized up and that i needed a new engine. I have had this car for 8 months, and it only has 108,000 miles on it. Kia refuses to take ownership of their defective product!

Car engine seized up while driving in town . Have auto at mechanic who has broke down motor said engine bearing was bad , the bearing was spun causing the engine to seize while driving down the road

The vehicles engine seized while driving on the highway, certified ase mechanic verified that there was ball bearing material in the oil filter. The mechanic had told me to send it to a registered kia dealership which i did. The vehicle year and model are being investigated however the dealership does not recognize our vin series as it was manufactured in a different location. To my knowledge through hours of research the parts that were manufactured were not manufactured correctly causing faster wear and tear on the ball bearings and thus causing engines to seize. I have been told in the past after filing a report that my car can not be considered. The vehicle has a total of 90,000 miles and not even 1 year of use by myself before this event occurred. It is a safety violation, and that is that simple. The kia dealership had told me they had many other vehicles of the same model year and series as mine do not fit the criteria and unfortunately the vehicles are not worth the money to repair them myself. Not only have i lost 14 thousand dollars for buying a vehicle that is faulty but i could have been killed. I thought the job of the nhtsa was to keep americans lives as safe as possible and i am truly appalled that they are in-fact not. This is not right a statistic on issues should not be at the percentage they are being allowed.

My 2012 kia sportage engine had a catastrophic failure at 141,000 miles. There was metal debris in the engine, however, i am told that my particular engine is not in the class action lawsuit covering these engine failures. However, kia has discontinued the engine and now the replacement engine is back ordered 5-6 months. I have to speculate that there are more catastrophic engine failures out there that have not been addressed by the lawsuit. I am lodging a complaint because i believe they know there is a problem with this engine overall and they have decided that the number of complaints are too low to bother with. We were in the vehicle in commuter traffic on the freeway at the time that the engine failed...thankfully, quick thinking saved us from having a wreck and we managed to get the vehicle off the road. My sportage had been well maintained, all oil changes and maintenance performed at the right times...there was no reason for the engine to fail. $23,000 for a car that ran for 141,000 miles...so disappointed. And they want $6500 to do the repairs and i have to wait 5-6 months because of the back ordered engine! will never buy another kia...should have bought a honda crv...my sister's has 250,000 miles on itand it runs like it's new!

Driving on a bridge ar 40 mph where all the sudden the engine lost all power and locked up on a busy birdge. When this happen the car lost all engine power will not crank smoke was comeing from the starter. Car engine has proper oil, proper oil level. Had the car towed and the shop said the engine is locked up and that kia has a huge engine problem.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the bearings in the motor needed to be replaced. The mechanic also stated that nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) pertained to the failure, but the vin was excluded. The vehicle was taken to bob king kia (1725 link rd, winston-salem, nc 27103) where it was diagnosed that the motor bearings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. .while consumer was driving engine started knocking an losing speed. Manufacturer is recalling this same engine knockingon this model and make but sales dealer said it was not under warranty.

My 2012 kia sportage with 63000 miles started making a loud racket and then the engine quit completely.i had it towed to local mechanic who informed me the engine had to be replaced.i then had it towed to kia who said the same.however they claim its not under warranty and not due to the recalled engines.i have always had my oil changed on time and have my records.

While driving car at highway speeds, suddenly car began to decelerate, luckily was able to get to shoulder of highway.car died when getting to shoulder, started again, engine making horrible knocking sound, and wouldn't move.got towed to kia dealer, stated we needed a new engine. Kia dealer stated the connecting rod on the crankshaft either seized up or broke and locked up.

The engine had a major malfunction and no longer runs there was many metal fragments in the oil pan. This happened with no earring signs kia says that there is no recall on the enginei would like to hear from someone regarding the issue

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 70 mph, a knocking sound was present coming from the engine and the vehicle began to lose power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to kia of auburn (1687 s. College st, auburn, al) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 106,000.

Engine seized. Moves while in park moves forward in reverse. Driving engine stalled pulled over car died. Then would not engage but still moved as described. Had happened a few months ago after transmission replace.then the igniter switch needed replacement.

While driving along the interstate, the engine seized in the vehicle. We first had it towed to our neighborhood mechanic who confirmed that the engine had seized, and that there were metal shavings found in the oil. We contacted grand kia in co and were advised to tow the vehicle in for diagnostic, which we did. They ultimately agreed that the engine had seized due to a faulty rod bearing, and agreed that oil in vehicle was recently replaced. The vehicle was out of warranty and we were advised that our only option was to replace with a short block engine for over $6,000. We went ahead with the replacement and were advised to contact kia corporate consumer relations to see if the repair could be reimbursed upon the regional manager's discretion, which was ultimately not approved. Upon receipt of repaired vehicle, we were told there was a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty on the work.approximately 3 months later, while driving, the vehicle stalled again and was towed to daytona kia since we assumed the warranty would cover any issues. The technician at daytona kia replaced an axel that per their professional opinion, was not re-assembled correctly when grand kia replaced our engine. Neither grand kia nor corporate kia took responsibility for this issue so we paid out of pocked for another repair so that we could drive home.shortly after, the engine started to make a new noise, given grand kia's lack of honoring the engine's warranty to date we decided to sell the car to cut our losses and avoid any further out of pocket expenses.

Driving vehicle on the freeway (i-80) at 65 miles an hour to work from my home and the vehicle started shaking and lost power. I immediately pulled to the shoulder of the road and called a tow truck. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and was diagnosed with lower engine failure. Kia corporation has a recall on 2012 kia sportage for lower engine failure but the corporation told me that my vehicle is not affected by the recall.

On may 18,2019 i was driving on i-10 westbound coming from tucson az headed to phoenix, az.at about 7:15 p.m. I heardstrange sound from the car and so i pulled off to the side of the freeway. I saw smoke so my wife and i immediately got our 2 sons ages 23 months and 4 months out of the car. Two other vehicles stopped and the people said they saw smoke coming from our car and askedif we were o.k. The engine was on fire, i called 911 and the dispatcher alerted police and fire department. Our lives were put in serious danger. The car was towed to the dealership( camelback kia in phoenix,az and they told us they could out a new motor in the car for $8,600 plus tax. This is not acceptable. We started researching and found out there was recalls on hundreds maybe thousands of 2012 kia sportages because the engines caught on fire. We were never told this prior to our car catching on fire. I feel the dealership intentionally misled us about the safety of the car and put our family in serious danger.

Motor seizure valve and cam shaft affected

As i pulled out of my driveway and began accelerating, my car began making a loud knocking noise in the front end. After pulling over and verifying the noise was coming from the motor, i took the car to my mechanic. He pulled the oil filter and cut it open. Confirming there were metal shavings in the oil filter. After calling our local kia dealership, they confirmed there was a recall for the 2012 kia sportages, but continued to tell me my vin was not included in said recall. (i purchase my car used, after a one year lease, so the warranty was void for me.) i am confused as to why my issue was "verified" to be the same issue as the recall, but my engine (2.4 l vs. 2.0 l) was not included?!?!?!something is not right. Now i am stuck with money remaining on my loan and a very large paperweight. (approximate mileage at the time of issue 79,000)

I was driving to work and my car stalled and just stopped accelerating so i pulled off and got it towed to a shop and they told me it was the whole engine. There is a recall for my 2011-2013 kia sportage but our vin isn't covered because the engine was purchased from a different warehouse they said. It's just frustrating because our car is the right year, make, and model for the engine failure recall. It it isn't covered even though the exact same issue happened that happened on other 2011-2013 kia sportages. It was very dangerous as i was on the highway and am pregnant and now my husband and i are at a loss of what to do. We've only had this car for 3 years and still owe money on it but need a whole new engine for it.

Engine is locked up according to dealer. Oil pan leaking.

2012 kia sportage ex purchased june 2019 with 69,974 miles.the engine seized up september 2019 with 72466 while driving 60 mph with no warning at all; no dash lights, no temperature gauge rising - nothing.all that was heard was a couple rapping sounds and then a big thud coming from the engine compartment followed by a total loss of power steering and brakes.after we struggled to get the car off the road without getting rear-ended, we tried to restart it and smoke started coming from under the hood.no fire started.fluid levels fine (radiator full; oil full - the car has only been driven 2492 miles since we bought it.diagnosis of a seized engine was confirmed by a mechanic.the kia dealership quoted me a price of $6700 for a used replacement engine with 109,000 miles.another local mechanic quoted roughly the same for another high mileage engine.this solution is a tough pill to swallow considering my engine only had 72466 miles on it when it died.whose to say that the older engine wouldn't fail in the near future. My understanding is that for various hyundai/kia vehicles with the same base engine as mine (2.4 l) made in the 2010-2014 time frame had a recall due to premature engine failure/seized bearings.the difference between the recalled vehicles and mine is simply the fuel/air injection system (gdi versus my naturally aspirated mpi).since the seizing issue involves the core mechanical components of the engine and not the peripheral plumbing, and given the high number of reported incidents to the nhtsa along with several new class action lawsuits, i feel it is only a matter of time before my engine is covered under the umbrella of the first recalls of the gdi engine.however that doesn't help pay my current monthly car payment while the car sits in the driveway.

Takata recall - i was driving slow when i heard a noise & the vehicle just stop was able to get out of the road. Brought truck to dealer they said something about bearing in the engine. Also stated that the company don't make engine anymore for my 7 year old truck. I also found a recall on my year make & model that they should have contacted me and they didn't for what went wrong with my truck is what the recall was on. Now they want to give me a engine with more mileage and no warranty. Its at the dealers won't crank or move.

The contact owned a 2012 kia sportage. While the contact's vehicle was parked, a witness observed smoke and flames under the hood. The fire and police departments arrived and both departments filed reports. The fire department extinguished the fire. There were no injuries. The vehicle was destroyed and remained in the parking lot. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The cause of the failure was not determined. The failure mileage and vin were unknown.

I was driving to pick up my kids from school when my vehicle started to stall and suddenly stopped and completely shut off on the middle of the highway. There was no check engine light or any other issues wrong with the vehicle. I took it to kia dealership where they confirmed that the engine had seized and could not explain to me why or how.

While driving vehicle began to rattle in engine compartment, lose speed and the check engine light came on. My daughter pulled the vehicle into the median and stopped the vehicle.upon arriving at the vehicle, i cranked the car to see what was happening, vehicle is making a rattling sound, no warning lights other than check engine light came on, water temperature is good. Vehicle gave no indication that motor failure was imminent during previous day's driving. I drove the vehicle over to the side of the road and called for a tow truck. Vehicle was taken to local auto repair shop; where their diagnosis determined that the engine needs to be replace.vehicle has just over 108,000 miles, oil changes performed regularly.investigated recalls of kia motors, engine has recall from manufacturer and nhtsa.manufacturer's recall number: sc174; nhtsa: 19v101

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While attempting to stop, the vehicle shut off without warning. The vehicle was towed to horne kia (480-725-5220, located at 1465 e motorplex loop, gilbert, az 85297) where it was diagnosed that the engine seized and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.

Driving down the interstate between 60-70 mph when the engine began to sputter just prior to stallingcoasted to the shoulder. Upon visual investigation noticed fresh oil on the road under the car coming from the the bottom of the engine compartment . Called for a tow truck as we were 700+ miles away from home. As the vehicle was being loaded onto the tow truck noticed metal fragments on the road by the fresh oil.vehicle was towed to citrus kia in ontario, ca,.we are currently waiting for our vehicle to be brought home to utah on a car hauler semi. The service dept at the dealership informed us of a recall on kia engines that we believe is the reason for our problem.very upset that we were never informed of this problem or to go have it looked at.

While driving my 2012 kia sportage at 30mph on a city street the check engine light came on and i heard a knocking in the engine compartment. I was close to my work site so i continued to drive the vehicle, as i turned into the parking lot the engine stalled. When i restarted the engine the knocking noise was much worse and grew loader as i applied gas. I turned of the car and had it towed to my mechanic. My mechanicalled listeed to the engine and said that it sounded like it "threw a bearing". Upon lokking online for information i saw that there was an upcoming recall on my car for this very thing. I called the 2 dealers in my area, albany ny, and was told that they can't do anything until the recall comes out in the end of may. I called the 800 number for kia and was told the same thing, i asked if they could check to see if my vehicle would be part of the recal and they said that they could not. They told me to wait to see if i got a letter after may 19. I told them i could not go for a month without my car and they said again there was nothing they can do until the recall comes out. This is ridiculous, if the recall is coming and they know there is an issue with the car why would i be force to wait a month without my car?

While driving on the i-10 freeway in phoenix, my engine seized up.all instrument lights came on and the vehicle died while driving approx 65mph.luckily i was able to get to the shoulder without incident.i had to wait over an hour in 106 degree heat with a highway patrol officer until the tow truck could arrive.the kia dealership confirmed that the engine died.this exact problem was addressed with kia in 2017 under a recall of over 600 thousand vehicles across their lineup including the sportage of this exact manufacturing year.in 2019, kia expanded the vehicles covered to avoid a class action lawsuit.but i was told that my vin doesn't qualify for the recall or the kia engine settlement.my vehicle only had 94000 miles on it and i performed all routine maintenance timely.i am the second owner of this vehicle and apparently the 10 year or 100k warranty also doesn't apply to me.i worked in automotive industry for years.everyone knows that all of these engines are made with dozens of shared components to keep costs down during manufacturing, regardless of what your vin is.had it been my 15-year-old son, learning how to drive for the first time, he would not have had the experience to know how to handle the situation. He would most likely have that day or caused a massive accident on the highway.it is shameful that kia won't help customers like me when they know these engines are all defective.does it take multiple deaths from car accidents before kia will act on behalf of their customers?do the right thing kia!

While driving 20 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated for a few moments and the vehicle stalled and completely shut off. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the fuel pump malfunctioned. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 137,005.

Was driving and the airbag inflated, the brakes locked up. Then started smelling gas and smoke

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that while attempting to move from a stop, the accelerator pedal was depressed however, the vehicle hesitated to respond before lunging forward. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Engine locked up while driving on a 4 lane road.. It has copper metal shavings in the oil pan. This is probably from crank bearings.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact stated that the vehicle proceeded to move forward with the gear placed in park. The contact attempted to stop the vehicle by utilizing the emergency brake. He also opened the driver side door in the event that he would have to jump from the vehicle. The vehicle crashed into two parked vehicles, trapping the contact between the vehicles. The contact received injuries the arms, shoulders and ribs. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic but was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and the current mileage was 3,500.

My 20 year old daughter was driving her 2012 kia sportageon the 30 bypass going 55 miles an hour when all of a sudden she had engine loss. Thank goodness she was able to safely get to the side of the road without getting hit or even killed. She was very scared. We had the car towed to aindependent mechanic. He said the hadcatastrophic engine. The mechanic advised us to have it towed to the kiadealershipwhere we purchased the vehicle a year and a half ago. Kia said that it would need a new engine costing $5000-$8000 to repair. How is it that our same year make and model have 3 recalls but our vin number is not. When they sold us the car they knew it was a ticking time bomb and didn't care. Just wanted to make the sale. As the 2nd owner of the car they said they won't honor the factory warranty even if the salesman marked it on our paperwork that we do have it. Still getting the run around from them. Even if they do fix the engine i am scared to have my daughter drive it. Considering all the recalls and horror stories. Please look into this. I would not wish this on anyone!

Engine locked up for no reason only 50,000 mile left me on the side of the road for three hours had no warning

I was driving in the middle of a busy highway when my car all the suddenlost all power. I luckily was able to get to the side of the road. The car however would not turn over. Electric worked but nothing else. I had to have it towed back home, 2 hours away, to have a dealership take a look at it. The bearing wore from the engine completely locked up the engine. Called kia and two kia dealershipsdirectly and they told me there was nothing they could do for me, even though they are having these engine issues with many of their other makes within the same year. Representative stated that since i was over my power train warranty as a second owner, with only 112,000 miles on the car, and the current recall was only cover 2.0 liter engines and not 2.4 liter engines. I was told that i would need to pay for a new engine out of pocket since my vin did not match any of the current recalls, even though this is happening to multiple kia models.

The engine turned off while driving 60mph on a highway. (this happened aprox 5 times) the engine light and oil light would some times become illuminated. After researching, this is the same problem reported with the engines covered under the sc147 recall, but kia says this engine is not covered. Is anyone else reporting this problem with this engine?

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. The contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road as smoke appeared. The contact exited the vehicle, opened the hood, and noticed that oil had splashed all over the engine. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that a new engine was needed. The contact discovered nhtsa campaign number: 19v101000 (engine); however, the contact's vin was excluded. The contact called kia of irvine (45 oldfield, irvine, ca 92618, 833-290-7156) for a second opinion and was informed that he would have to cover the costs for a tow. The dealer also informed the contact that there were no recalls on the vehicle. No further assistance was offered. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

I parked my car to unload groceries. My car was on but in park. I walked around the back of the car to the passenger side to unload the. At. The door was still locked so i walked back around to the driver side unlocked the doors and walked back around to the passenger side. When i started unloading my groceries, my car started rolling/ driving away. No one was in the car as this was happeneing. As i chased my car i was able to get to my passenger door and get it opened, the car was still in the park. The only thing that stopped my car was the framing of a garage. I have multiple witnesses that saw my car in park, and watched it drive away. Thankfully no one was hurt. I don't feel comfortable driving this car any longer.

Brake pedal grip padding falls off, leaving a slippery surface and a fallen grip padding blocking brake pedal. While driving in freeway at 65 mph. Driver lost control of vehicle, swerving into two toll lanes & crashing into several rubber dividers. After this incident the brake pedal grip padding has continued to fall off while driving the vehicle.kia dealership & service department denied a manufacturing defect in tghe vehicle without even inspecting the vehicle.

Vehicle was purchased new and on the way home from the dealership the brakes were applied as i was approching a traffic light and the brakes made a very very loud grinding noise and the vehicle did not want to stop after brakes were applied so i had to put much more than normal pressure on the brake pedal to get the vehicle to stop. I carried the vehicle back to the dealership to have it checked (did not make the noise on the way to the dealership) and after checking it i was told by the service department that they could not get it to make the noise and could not find anything wrong with the brakes. On the way home from the dealership the vehicle made the same malfunction once (loud brake grinding noise and hard to stop) but did not do the same the rest of the way home. My wife and daughter drove the vehicle and as they were approching stopped traffic at a traffic light and she applied the brakes the vehicle made the same malfunction with the brakes making the loud grinding noise (as she said it sound like chains wrapped around the brake calipers it was so loud) the vehicle did not want to stop as the brakes were applied in the normal manner and she almost hit the stopped vehicles in front of her before she could get it stopped (traveling at 45 mph) and the instrument cluster lights began to flash on and off. Please note this brake malfunction has happened (3) times since the vehicle was bought new and we have only driven it approx. 80 miles and my concern is when the malfunction occured we were only traveling at approx. 45 mph and could hardly get the vehicle stopped so what would happen if my teenage daughter was driving on the highway at a higher rate of speed and this malfunction occured - she may not be able to get the vehicle stopped in the distance required to avoid an accident.

Rattling noise coming from steering column for a while and has constantly gotten worse. Took it to a kia of cherryhill first they told the noise was coming from something in the door, then they guy at the service desk took a ride with me, i pointed the noise out & he told me it was a viscous coupling, the following week i requested he email me the quote & he responded that my particular vehicle doesn't even have that part & it's probably the steering column.i decided to take it to another mechanic & he confirms the rattling noise is coming b from the steering column. They looked up the recalls & there were other recalls for this issue but my vin # was not on there. I believe kia was not thorough with the initial recall.

While traveling at highway speeds, or any speed above 30mph on a straight road vehicle requires constant correction to track vehicle in a straight line.without constant correction, the vehicle would leave the road surface.the resistance to steering pressure in correlation to speed does not seem properly programmed for vehicle.the best way to describe this is to drive a car that would otherwise track down the road correctly, now throw control arms with worn out bushings and ball joints.it acts exactly like that, except a car with worn out control arm bushings and ball joints would in no way shape or form pass a safety inspection in any state.this problem, on trips over 45 minutes excessively fatigues the driver.(i thought i was going crazy on a 4.5 hour trip mostly expressway speeds)over 80mph this problem seems to be eliminated...but not worth the endangerment of others using the roadway.

Its approx 57 degrees out.6:30 am this morning went outside to start car came, back 10 minutes later to go to work and found a crack (which wasn't there when i started the car) from bottom left corner up to the top.on my way to work another crack started in the middle of the windshield.my car is 9 weeks old, no accident, no chips.when i called the car dealer they said call my insurance company it should be covered.i told them that i felt they should take care of it.they told me no.what will happen in the dead of winter?

My car was parked at my residence. All doors were unlocked. I proceeded to pull the right rear passenger door handle and it came off of the door. This small pulling action and the detachment of the door handle caused me to fall on my rear end. The fall caused bruising to my buttocks and back.

Driving at approx. 35 mph, exiting the 405 s freeway in socal on the brookhurst n exit ramp, heard a loud pop.checking the front windshield, i see a long 13 inch crack in the glass at the top right hand corner, beginning at the edge of the windshield where it's connected to the car body frame and extending left toward the center of the windshield.after parking the car, i inspect the crack, which is completely smooth, indicating that it was not possible for a rock to have chipped or gouged the glass to start the crack.any glass dust was found at the edge of the windshield where the crack originated.clearly, a stress crack. This is a safety issue because if the front windshield were to crack or shatter unexpectedly during normal and safe operation of a moving vehicle, then that would certainly be a possible cause for an accident and/or injury to the driver and any passengers.

My vehicle stopped in the middle if a street light . I took it to kia shop they said the engine died which before that i never got warnings . I know kia does have problems with the engine . They are covering the engine but i have to pay for labor which is a little over 3,000 dollars . I'm not satisfied but i need my car .

Air quality. Car consistently smells like mold and mildew in the air vents despite frequent changing of filters and treatment for mold and mildew. Condensation doesn't evaporate and mildew forms creating an indoor air quality issue in the car. Happens frequently and makes the car undriveable for anyone with mold and mildew allergies

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v750000 (engine).

When i put the gear in drive, it jerks.the car is stationary, i put in reverse, back out, put on the brake then drive and this is when it jerks. Also it going in to drive is difficult. As if it's hard to go in to gear.. This occurs every time i drive it. It also occurs when i'm putting into drive, going forward, not just backing up first.i have no documentation. I entered in other as i'm not familiar where this issue goes on your list. Possibly the drive train?

On two separate occasions while driving the car has shut off completely. The first time it happen the car was towed to a mechanic that said the engine was bad and the parts were recalled. We were able to tow the car to another shop and they had said it was possibly the starter. We replaced the starter as well as another part and the car started. Once taken for a drive the car again shut down. We again had to tow the car. Now it won't start.

Windshield seal strip start peeling from thetop of the driver side .

Yesterday when i was driving my check engine light came on. So i took it to pepboys that said the code was 791. Then, called the dealership and mechanics to find out about it. Most people that part should not had went bad. This code is for the butterfly flips in the intake manofold.

Recently purchased 2012 kia sportage about 8 months ago, only 68,000 off the lot. Has been driving perfectly fine with routine maintenance on vehicle. Until last night headed back home, the engine started making a knocking and clammering noise that got louder as i countined to drive. I figured at about 100,000 miles shouldn't nothing possibly be going wrong. The car first stalled out and cut off, then restarted. Drove to nearest exit thinking it maybe low on oil but no. Researched to find the upsetting and poor reviews on the engine failure to failed rob bearings within the motor due to excessive scrap metal left inside during assembly. In which responsibility is solely on the manufacturer. Also read up on forbes article of kia recalling vehicles for this same exact problem and situation.

Car only has 79,597 and i'm hearing knocking noises coming from under the hood. I have now received my recall in the mail

Door will not lock completely when car is sitting in the sun and its hot outside.driver window will not roll down when its hot outside, trunk hatch will not open/unlock when hot out side.alarm doesnt work when hot outside.

Recall on a/ccondenser assy-cooler, mileage 24188 dated 4-30-2015, recall was completed. Claim #18-646g-444.at this time the a/c blows hot air, mileage 63465. We live in kenner, la temps are in the triple digits.the value of the vehicle is not worth the repairs at this time.the vehicle is no longer in warranty. This in my opinionpoor workmanship on kia behalf, very disappointing.

While driving down interstate the vehicle started making a awful knocking noise. Then the dash lit up with oil pressure light check engine light. I slowed down and pulled to side of interstate with my children in the car.i had to call someone to come get us.

The contact owns a 2012 kia sportage. While the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated at a rapid speed. The vehicle was taken to fox kia (4141 28th st se, grand rapids, mi 49512 (616) 524-4008), but was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that there was no recall associated with the vin. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.

I was waiting at a stop light when i heard a huge pop sound almost like a firecracker and when i turned around to see what it was my entire back window was completely shattered. There was no rock or any object like that to be found anywhere so i have no idea what caused it, maybe pressure or an air bubble?it seemed like a default in the window to me but of course it's not covered under warranty.

Driving to work in july 2013 i heard a loud pop sound and looked around and noticed nothing out of the ordinary about 10 seconds later my panoramic sunroof shattered. I thought maybe something was kicked up from a truck in front of me and hit the roof so i filed a claim with my insurance company. Luckily it was taken care of.now its march 2014 and i had the same think happen, i heard a loud pop looked around and saw nothing until the next day. My windshield was cracked and the panel ofglass between the windshield and the panoramic sunroof shattered. I too called the dealer and they told me to call my insurance company that this was not their problem.twice is one year...i think this is a manufacturing defect.

Brake pedal grip padding falls off, leaving a slippery surface and a fallen grip padding blocking brake pedal. While driving in freeway at 65 mph. After this incident the brake pedal grip padding has continued to fall off while driving the vehicle.kia dealership & service department denied a manufacturing defect in tghe vehicle without even inspecting the vehicle.
