I have talked to many other owners of the 1997 kia sportage and they have all had problems with air bags and fuel systems.

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 176,620.*bp

While sitting in the vehicle, stationary in a parking lot talking with my wife, the airbags deployed.
Dt:driver's side air bag deployed while consumer was driving in reverse backing from a driveway at low speed.there was no crash or impact.this happened without any warning.no lights illuminated or warning signals.the car had been parked in a shaded area for about an hour when this occurred.consumer's husband drove vehicle home after the incident.have not taken this to a dealer for this issue, vehicle was parked afterwards and has not been driven since.no explanation or clue as to why this happened.
The srs air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.the cruise control failed to come on its own.the clock spring needed to be replaced.the air bag light had been on for a year.the consumer was informed that the front seat belts needed to be replaced. *sc

1997 sportage kia with 67000 miles, dealer maintained now has a "faulty airbag" signal that indicates possibility that airbag may not deflate in an accident.no accidents of any kind.
The contact owns a 1997 kia sportage. The contact stated that while driving in reverse, the driver's side air bags erroneously deployed from the steering wheel and from under the steering wheel area. The lower air bag struck the contact in the hip area and the steering wheel air bag struck the contact in the face, causing minor injuries. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 125,226.

When driving northbound on highway 682, up a steep hill and curve a car ran head on into my 1997 kia sportage.the car had damage in the front center, front left, and left side of the vehicle.the driver of the car that hit me stated that her car was sliding and she could not control it. 911 was called and the police and ambulance came to the seen of the accident.both of us went to the hospital and she was given the ticket and found at fault for the accident at the point of impact, the drivers side airbags did not deploy.there are 2 airbags on the drivers side, one in the steering wheel, and one in the dashboard to protect the knee and leg areas.neither one of the airbags deployed.i was restrained in a seat belt, but i did bump my head and bumped my knees and the left side of my body.i still have the knot on my head and my knees and left side continue to hurt.

I was concerned that my airbag had not deployed during my accident on august 7th.since i suffered a front end collision, i wondered why it had not.i contacted kia and after being put off for about 5 days, they finally instructed me to contact my insurance company to have them report the problem to kia.state farm indicated that since the air bag was not deployed, it was not a part that had to be repaired.state farm indicated that their adjusters had no way of knowing why a part built by kia was not working at that it was kia's responsibility.finally getting the car back from it's second trip to be repaired from the accident (another story all together), i took it in to central kia in plano, tx and was told that it had a defective module which they would repair for $892 plus labor.when i inquired as to why i would be charged for the repair of this "defective" part, i was told that the car has 54,000 miles on it and that the repair of the airbag is covered only by warranty up to 36,000 miles.unfortunately, the only way i found out that the part did not work was because i was in an accident.i was wondering if i have any ground to stand on in thinking that it is kia's responsibility to fix the problem.all i can think is what would have happened if i hadn't seen the collision coming.the airbag that i paid for when the car was purchased, was purchased in good faith that it would actually work ... It didn't.

I am concerned because the service engine soon light comes on periodically.when i call phil long ford, they tell me that happens with kias and they can't fix it unless the light is on at the time i bring it in.after oncce taking it down anyway and being refused repair because the engine light went off by the time i got down down the mountain pass, i gave up on that one.when i asked about any additional recalls last spring when i took the kia in for a tailgate latch recall, phil long ford told me there were no others.now i find that there was indeed a recall (99v325), which could have affected the electrical system.now my battery went dead suddenly for no apparent reason.i'm concerned about electrical problems after reading so many complaints.also, my horn periodically won't work which phil long also says is common.(why then haven't they fixed it?) kia and their partner, ford, needs investigating.
Consumer received manufacturer'srecall 9764. Vehiclewas taken to dealer for repairs, butstalling began again. Also,alarm system stopped working which caused the horn to stop working.

Consumer heard a whistling noise in the vehicle.the consumer believed the vehicle was unsafe therefore traded it in for another vehicle.
I have been having stalling problems for about 2weeks now, at first i thought it might be the battery; but i checked it out at autozone for free and the machine that detects how much power in the battery suggested that the battery was fine. The stalling problems started two weeks ago and i had to push-start the car about four times and then it decided to not start at all, i know its not the battery because it has been checked and it still has power.

My car will not get out of first gear.the kia coproration field experts cannot figure out what is wrong with it, they say it's a wiring nightmare, they refuse to take it to irvine (kia headquarters) because it is out of warranty.i believe they wiring harness recall of 1997 proves that the car has never been properly fixed, and i can't get any answers.my car has been at the mission bay kia dealership since 12-1-02, and i'm still waiting to find out what's wrong with it.

Kia refuses to include my 1997 sportage ex 4wd in recall for 1997 kia sportages ex 4wd.recall 1cmp005 to replace the engine control module (ecm) has never been performed.also not sure that recall 2cmp014 on wiring has been performed.my main concern and the refusal from kia is on the ecm.
Nhtsa campaign 99v325000; kia issued an engine stalling recall.this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.however,the engine stalled, and check engine light remained on.
This car is absolutely unsafe to drive; at any moment it may stall due to the faulty electrical system. I have had this car in for service numerous times and i have never gotten the problem resolved. I have simply had enough and would like some help.

Transmission replaced, and is now acting up again.rear-end replaced, acting up, engine squeals, dealer can't hear it, burning anti-freeze smell upon warmup, temp gauge goes crazy, in 4wd vehicle does not want to turn, only wants to go straight, makings hard "clunking" noise if you attempt to turn.the yugo was a better vehicle!

- the contact owns a 1997 kia sportage. The vehicle was overheating. The contact said that the used car dealer replaced the radiator and the main hose. The vehicle continued to overheat, and when diagnosed ,the contact was told the overheating was due to the clutch overheating and the fan sticking. The contact didn't think that transmission oil was circulating throughout the vehicle properly. There were no warning indicator lights. The vehicle currently will not start. The dealer was no longer in business.

This vehicle has been a problem from the day that i purchased it,engine failed and it was inshop for two months,transmission failed, the rear end failed, the fuel economy switch failed, then the transmission failed again, and the transmission has failed three times since july, 2000. I have had two near accidents on the interstate due to these mechanical failures. I have tried for over two years to contact a kia represenative but they will not respond to my complaints . The dealer is no help, they only give you the delay game. I have a vehicle that is no good, it is unsafe to drive and a danger to put on the road. It continually has problems and i am having to make payments on it.please help

Curious if other kia sportage owners have had similar. Danger comes when engine cuts out at 70 mph, which has happened to me twice.
The vehicle is cutting off in right turns.there was a recall on the vehicle for this problem.however, the dealer i have taken the vehicle to, has said the have performed the recall service, yet it is still cutting off and idling low in the turns.i have taken the vehicle back 6 to 7 times and they don't believe me and still have not been able to fix the car.

Consumer's vehicle has been stalling at any speed over 55mph. When consumer is driving vehicle, without any warning, the vehicle will stall.she has had vehicle towed four times, and the other two times were not documented. Consumer contacted the lemon law in her state, and was told that the law did not apply because there was no documetation that the vehicle would not start. There has been times when vehicle would not start.only after vehicle has stalled that it would not start for approx 5/10 minutes.
When this vehicle was driven off the lot it was in need of repairs, from the first complaint at the dealership i was told "oh that's normal for kia" i have traveled by tow truck more than in my new vehicle. I have been treated as badly from the dealership as by kia. Someone needs to stand up and force kia to face up to their responsibilities. Kia has never had to face a jury or judge in a court of law because they settle for less than most consumers have paid, i know for i will be forced to settle without help . I requested only to get what i paid minus mileage yet if i'm forced to settle my loss will be over $4,000. Lives will be lost unless we act soon

Both my 4 year old son & i almost lost our lives when my engine stalled on an interstate speed limit 70 cars turning everyway to avoid us, i really felt there was no hope when i saw an 18 wheeler approaching, i turned to move my son from the rear seat to the front so i could at least hold him, the driver saw me and when he managed to stop his rig was jackknifed and 1 side hit the block barrier. I have documents to prove the engine problems in 97 kia's can't be repaired.will lives be lost before kia is held responsible? please help

I have this car worked on over the 2 years i own it, kia offered no help is solving the problem.i called kia, ask the dealer to help, again no help.the facture warranty ended and i was going to have to pay for any more problems.the car was failing every time they replaced parts in the emisions system.i feeli was forced into trading it in because kia would not call me back or the dealer back.this car should not be sold to any other person but the dealer and kia are going to put it back on the road noing of the problem.please make sure thid vehicle does not get put back on the road. The check engine light comes on some times after driving 20 miles. Since purchase of vehicle i have had problems with cel coming on and staying on, i have had problems with clutch, the belts, and recently the emission systems, each time i go in the people at the dealer ship act like i am doing these things on purpose and this last time they told me that my warranty had expired. This is the most unreliable vehicle that i have ever owned-someone should do something about all of these problems occurring with kia's.no safety defect (s) mentione din the summary.
Noise from exhaust system, reposition catalytic convertor/heat shield to stop noise.
Exhaust fumes were coming into the vehicle,and noticed the catalytic converter was hot. Dealer replaced the catalytic converter and rerouted wire. After four months, and just being released again from dealer,exhaust fumes reappeared.consumer did a 60 mph drive, and driver/passenger, and child felt sick.went to the hopspital and were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning.
Kia has issued a voluntary recall of its 1998 sportage sport utility vehicles to replace the manifold catalytic converter. This same problem has also happened to my 1997 sportage. A friend of mine has the same model and year as my sportage and the problem has happenedto her vehicle also. I think this recall needs to be extended to the 1997 sportages also. The car will not pass emmisions inspections and i dont think i should have to pay for a problem that was caused by the manufacturer.

On 4/23/01 i took my car to westcott kia motors, i had a concern reguarding my transmission, they inspected and said theyfound switch stop lamp wasnt working at which time they replaced it , it was under warranty, they also replaced an egr valve that was under warranty, still to no avail of having my transmission concernes resolved with this dealer (after all these repairs , my car still had the same problem i brought it in for) i filed a complaint with kia consumer affairs. I waited a couple of months and decided to try my luck at another dealer in the area so i went to el cajon kia on 11/19/01 an allowed them to work on my car at which time they ordered a transfer case to be installed on 12/05/01, they replaced the transfer case and it broke while i was on the freeway 12/07/01 at which time i had the vehicle towed to their shop, they repaired the transfer case again and still the clunking noise i had brought it in for was still there in my car, i drove my car for a few more days untill it started to hesitate on me and the engine light came on, i had my car towed back to el cajon kia and the technician took a test drive with me and stated while we were driving my car that kia only pays them for 2 hours of service to vehicles, and that it was normal play that i was hearing in my vehicle, after all the days in the shop and all the repairs done, my car was no better than when i took it in for it to be repaired, i feel like they did more damage than good to my vehicle, and i also feel that there is a major problem with my transmission that the dealer failed to repair, i just took my car to rancho kia (where i bought it from and had repair problems with reguarding my tire latch) and they had to repair wiring to maf sensor and replaced my egr valve and also my purge solenoid was broken and they said the clunking noise is my front hub bearings are loose.
Check engine light came on.needs new egr kit (controls emissions mix).6/99 experienced engine racing on ignition, high idle at stops, engine surges at all speeds.then check engine light came on.happened first 6/98.they tightened terminal connections.second time 7/98 - adjusted c123 & c124 access connections.third time 5/99 replacing egr kit - awaiting part.service performed by maita olds, 2211 fulton ave., sacramento, ca95825.

Consumer complained of not having any hazard lights, and was unable to get the dealer to repair them. Dealer informed consumer that they are waiting on the parts.
The design of the protective shield for the fuel tank allowed sand and pebbles to accumulate to the extent that i started noticing fuel vapors.the vehicle is housed in a garage, so i raised a window to help dissipate the vapors.in a few days, fuel was dripping from the leaks in the tank.i applied a putty product in june, 2006, which helped for several months.then it started again.i re-applied putty in august, 2007.then again in july, 2008, with two different (permanent?) products that have not worked, yet.the tank still leaks.

While driving down highway when approximately at 55mph engine will stall. Slow down and stop without warning. Most of the time i can turn engine off restart run it thru all of the gears and it will be fine for awhile unless on bumpy road or stop warning bumps in the road. I can not fill gas tank up due to it leaking out under vehicle refrase that pour out. It will also vibrate really bad after being drove for over 2 hours straight. Please help me to resolve these problems before it causes a injury or death.
I have talked to many other owners of the 1997 kia sportage and they have all had problems with air bags and fuel systems.

Gas leak from mid right side of car.happens when car first starts. Severalcontinuous drops in garage and down driveway. 1 drop per second. Does not happen each time car starts.dealer said there was no leak.pressurized lines and inspected 3 times in 2 days.said no sign of leak and if happens again come in.it is going back tomorrow.leak has happened again. I took car back to dealer today and they informed me that since the car does not leak each time car is started that if they cannot cause it to leak while at dealer, that i am out of luck.the representative was very rude and suspicious that i was not telling the truth about the leak.he stated that he would start every two hours and if it does not leak too bad!!i also noted the bad paint for the 3rd time and he laughed at me and said "i don't know what to tell you"!please advise!!

A few years back i started smelling gas. So my father in law and uncle took a look at it and it yep you got a gas leak. So they tried to patch it several times and nothing has seemed to work. So back in february i received a letter from kia stating a repair benefit notification about my gas tank leaking. So a few weeks ago i called a kia dealer and made an appointment for them to look at my tank. After a hour drive and a forty minute wait they tell me that my kia does not meet the requirements for kia to fix my tank. So i come home and the next i check my tank and it is obvious to anyone that my kia is leaking gas. I called kia motors and they went to tell me that since my 10 year warranty expired in 2007 that they could donothing for me. But what makes no sense is that they didn't send out my letter until 2008.i have a 7 month old that is in my kia daily, so i asked the customer service rep. From kia motors, what if my kia somehow catches on fire and i am not able to get to my child quick enough, and something bad happens. He told me that all repairs made to the tank would be my responsibility no matter what, and that kia would not fix or replace my tank.

Kia sportage 4 door.rear driver side passenger door would not open from outside.door opened from inside.door was then shut and did not latch, upon second closing door latched.drove around two miles and went around curve at about 10 mph door latch released and door flew open.16 month old child was in car seat beside the door.door had to be strapped to other door to keep shut.car taken to dealer who said latch was rusted out.ordered replacement latch, other back door has shown same symptoms of not closing and then closing and latching, also not opening from outside.this would have been a serious incident if child had not been in safety seat, probably resulting in a death.
Consumer experiencing problem with rear hatch door not locking properly. Recall letter was received and taken to dealer. Work was done, but not completed; condition still occurs.
After purchasing this vehicle new we are very upset at the lack of concern and assisstance from the numerous government agencies i have contacted, completed forms and mailed them, i have yet to be contacted. Both my 4 year old son & i almost lost our lives when my engine stalled on an interstate speed limit 70 cars turning everyway to avoid us, i really felt there was no hope when i saw an 18 wheeler approaching, i turned to move my son from the rear seat to the front so i could at least hold him, the driver saw me and when he managed to stop his rig was jackknifed and 1 side hit the block barrier. I have documents to prove the engine problems in 97 kia's can't be repaired.will lives be lost before kia is held responsible? please help
While driving 55 mph hood latch snapped and the hood flew open. Consumer pulled over the latch the hood down. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. Broken windshield repaired, but damaged hood not repaired to date.
Transmission failure.
This vehicle has been a problem from the day that i purchased it,engine failed and it was inshop for two months,transmission failed, the rear end failed, the fuel economy switch failed, then the transmission failed again, and the transmission has failed three times since july, 2000. I have had two near accidents on the interstate due to these mechanical failures. I have tried for over two years to contact a kia represenative but they will not respond to my complaints . The dealer is no help, they only give you the delay game. I have a vehicle that is no good, it is unsafe to drive and a danger to put on the road. It continually has problems and i am having to make payments on it.please help

Engine check light comes on. Vehiclesurges and bucks. A hold light is flashing which means there is a problem with the transmission.

I took my car in to be serviced on 05/15/01 to westcott kia, i was hearing a loud grinding noise and my vehicle was resisting to go foward, also lack of power to my vehicle overall, i felt like it was a transmission concern at that time my vehicle had 50888 miles on it, they told me it was my egr valve , it was malfunctioning, they replaced it. On 03/06/02 i took my car to rancho kia to be serviced, they told me that i needed my egr valve kit replaced at which time i didnt realize i had had it done less than a year earlier, they charged me 133.40, i contacted kia consummer affairs when i realized the repair had already been done less than a year ago, they stated my car had been driven more than 12000 miles (12656 to be exact) and there was nothing they could do for me, i have had so many problems with this car.

Since purchase of vehicle i have had problems with cel coming on and staying on, i have had problems with clutch, the belts, and recently the emission systems, each time i go in the people at the dealer ship act like i am doing these things on purpose and this last time they told me that my warranty had expired. And that it would cost 1,000 dollars to fix. I was out raged.
- the contact owns a 1997 kia sportage. The vehicle was overheating. The contact said that the used car dealer replaced the radiator and the main hose. The vehicle continued to overheat, and when diagnosed ,the contact was told the overheating was due to the clutch overheating and the fan sticking. The contact didn't think that transmission oil was circulating throughout the vehicle properly. There were no warning indicator lights. The vehicle currently will not start. The dealer was no longer in business.
Rear differential failed causing noise in the rear end of vehicle.

In may 5, 2003 i took to inspect the car for a noise at the back. Its like being on a plane for departure. I was told by the dealer that the back differentialswas damaged. It only had25,317 mileage in 2003. I could not believe that. This year 2005a inspect the car at wester auto i was told the differential is damage. At the store i was told they have seen others kia sportage with the same problems. I also when to ped boys. Also, they said verb there were problems kia differential. At wester auto i change the back bearing thinking that will fix the noise. Kia dealer estimate the repair for $865 on 2003.

Vehicle would jerk.engine check light kept coming on. Vehcle would overheat & fail to start. Also, vehicle had revvedwhile at stop light due to fast idle . The ported passage hole was too small. It needed to be wider according to mechanic. Driveshaft broke twice in last 6 months.

The front caliper eats up the disc.dealer has replaced the disc 3 times.

Master cylinder brake problems;. When applying the brakes the pedal is very hard and there is very little stopping ability. Vehicle at dealership since july 9, 1997. In addition, windshield wipers broke in a driving rain storm, and electric side mirrors broke, preventing driver from adjusting them.
Abs and parking brake dash lights came on.took vehicle to dealer.mechanic said that low fluid in master cylinder caused the lights and that the master cylinder had a leak and needed replaced.also stated that this was a common problem on this year vehicle.could have lost all braking capability if car was continued driven with the lights on cause fluid levels would drop.
Consumer states took vehicle for services and the technicianfound the master cylinderwas leaking also found passenger brake line was leaking. Manufacturer has been notified.provide further information. Ts
Steering is locking up, replaced power steering pump but that did not correct problem.
This is the most unreliable vehicle that i have ever owned-someone should do something about all of these problems occurring with kia's.no safety defect (s) mentione din the summary.
Steering column malfunctioned.
Consumer received manufacturer'srecall 9764. Vehiclewas taken to dealer for repairs, butstalling began again. Also,alarm system stopped working which caused the horn to stop working.
Alarm failed.
Car struck on rear passenger door/car lost control/spun out of control/rollover.
Steering is locking up, replaced power steering pump but that did not correct problem.
When driving consumer noticed a knocking sound coming from the front end of the vehicle, consumer isalso having problem with leakage inside the vehicle. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has attempted to correct the problem, problem still occurs.*ml

Engine check light is on, the car isstalling, the air bag lights are on. I am afraid that they will deploy at any given time.almost killed myself and my daughter on the queenboro bridge, i was going 40 and all of a sudden the car accelerated on it's own,i applied the brakes, but they had turned hard, i had no brakes, put emergency brakes, but nothing, when it was nearing an accident because i had to stop i threw the car in neutral which slowed it down enough for me to safely put it in park in the middle of a bridge.the cars engine roared when i put in park i couldn't move or fear of killing myself.the locks on the car keep opening and closing by themself.it needs 2 quarts of engine oil every month.i am totally dissatisfied with this car.

Transmission replaced, and is now acting up again.rear-end replaced, acting up, engine squeals, dealer can't hear it, burning anti-freeze smell upon warmup, temp gauge goes crazy, in 4wd vehicle does not want to turn, only wants to go straight, makings hard "clunking" noise if you attempt to turn.the yugo was a better vehicle!
I just purchased a 1997 kia sportage with 38,000 miles on it.in the two weeks since purchase i have already had it in the shop for repair twice.with such low miles on the vehicle i thought it was a good and safe purchase but now i am afraid i have made a mistake.the day after purchase the driver side window switch broke and i could not roll my window up.i took it in the shop to have a new one put in.on friday, october 1 the rear drive shaft gear box broke as i was going down the road with two of my children in the car.luckily i was driving slow and could stop right away.if i was driving down the highway at a fast speed and could not get over immediately the rear tires could have seised up causing serious injury or death to me and my children.someone should look into this problem and fix it right away before people loose their lives over a poorly manufactured suv.
I was driving on the freeway when my right front tire had a violent blow out.the tread separated from the tire.the tire blew ou in two places.it has severe cuts in both the sidewall and the bottom tread area.the cut looks as though someone took an axe to it and cut across the width of the tire.the blowout was so severe that it blew out an entire turn signal housing.a few days later we met someone in the parking lot of a store and they said the same thing had happened to them but not as bad as ours.luckily i was able to keep control of the car to prevent any accidents.i have had tires blow before but nothing like this.it felt as if someone had crashed into it.i have a wife, a 2 1/2 year old son, and a 4 month old daughter and i thank god that my wife wasn't driving because i know she wouldn't have been able to control the car because it was such a bad blow out.i know general tires isn't recalling all of their tires because they haven't had any rollovers or fatalities yet, who is going to have to be the first?( dot number: tire size: 205/75r15 )

The sidewalls of the factory tires were cracking. Went to a general tire dealer and they installed 5 new tires under warranty. The manufacturer had sold the rights to the general name to a korean tire co. The factory tires are not made in the us tires. They were aware of this problem and gave us the new tires quickly.( dot number: )

Engine check light came on.and as soonas vehicle started to slow down itstalled. Dealer stated vehicle needed new wiring harness. Problem has been a ongoing sincevehicle was purchased in sept. Of 1997. Servicle manager told consumer theycorrected wiring harnessproblem. But,consumer feltwork could have been incorrectly done.

While the vehicle was running consumer applied the brakes, and vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own. Consumer's foot was on the brake, andvehicle continued to speed.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection.however,mechanic couldnot duplicate the problem.
When putting vehicle into reverse and letting up on the clutch vehicle accelereated into reverse and ran over a mailbox.driver had pushed clutch and brake in order to stop.engine still ran high.

The day before the accident, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, and would not slow down. I was able to get it into neutral, and then into park. It did not do this on 1.5 hour trip home. I called the service manager at paramount kia the next day. He advised me that he had not heard of any such problems. While attempting to drive to that dealership, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and would not slow down. The brakes would not respond, and this time the transmission would no disengage into neutral. I was not able to control the vehicle, and crashed. I have just been made aware of a similar incident involving a kia sephia, which was reported in a local paper. The elderly driver crashed when his vehicle accelerated out of control. A post from fence he hit impaled him in the chest.

Problem arises when shifting gears or coasting to a stop with clutch depressed.the engine rpm's will rise to very high levels and not return to idle conditions.problem occurs intermittently and without warning.
Vehicle would jerk.engine check light kept coming on. Vehcle would overheat & fail to start. Also, vehicle had revvedwhile at stop light due to fast idle . The ported passage hole was too small. It needed to be wider according to mechanic. Driveshaft broke twice in last 6 months.

While driving down highway when approximately at 55mph engine will stall. Slow down and stop without warning. Most of the time i can turn engine off restart run it thru all of the gears and it will be fine for awhile unless on bumpy road or stop warning bumps in the road. I can not fill gas tank up due to it leaking out under vehicle refrase that pour out. It will also vibrate really bad after being drove for over 2 hours straight. Please help me to resolve these problems before it causes a injury or death.

Master cylinder brake problems;. When applying the brakes the pedal is very hard and there is very little stopping ability. Vehicle at dealership since july 9, 1997. In addition, windshield wipers broke in a driving rain storm, and electric side mirrors broke, preventing driver from adjusting them.
