I was driving home from work, and when i was approximately 1 minute from my home, my check engine light came on, and my car began "chugging". I made it as far as 3 houses away from my driveway when my car just stalled out. Rather than re-starting, i decided to roll to my driveway. I didn't even make it as far as my driveway, and my car caught on fire. The black smoke was so thick, you couldn't even see through it. My whole engine went up in flames, and my car is now totaled. I have had absolutely no problems with this car until now.

This is a kia rio 4 dr. 2001 ..with 12,000 aprox miles when the ecu fuse broke, on hwy 127 near death valley ..had to get towed into my destination.it took about 5 days to get a part from calif, ups to me from a friend, i changed the fuel level sensor,,which i thought was the problem...the nearest kia dealer was 80 miles away in las vegas,,,i later discovered that it was a blown ecu fuse..not a sensor..i then drove the car aptrox 500 miles back to caloif, when it blew again on the hwy 15 near fontana,...i took the car to kia dealer in ontario calif, they only did 2 warranty items on the car.#1 was an upgrade of the ecm.and #2 replaced a fuel dist sensor////the dealer said it would fix the fuse issue,,,which i told them up front.they returned the car i was going back to nevadait blew a fuse ecu on hwy 15had it towed home again,,,,the dealer picked up the car from rialto 10 miles away from my parents....they had the car 4 days and told me it would take aprox 600$ to get under the dash where they believe there is a short that is causing this ecu to blow,,i had the car returned on my aaa again took it for a second opinion,,,again they also said it could be under the dash and the amount they wanted to fix it and keep the car for about 3 or 4 days to make sure the problem was fixed.the dealer never test drove the car after the warranty work..as per the invoice mileage in and mileage out...they said they could not duplicate the problem...again...after the 2nd opinion..i had to tow it again when i was driving it home on the streets..that was 55 miles from my parents house...i have all the aaa records on towing ...i'm out of tows...this car could cause an accident ....only because the car will stop running with out any notice and so far i was lucky that nothing went wrong.

01 rio is a lemon & safety hazard.many major repairs done including the timing belt & valves rebuilt, new cooling system, both control arms & boots.wheel defect recently recalled caused excess wear/ tear on control arms, boots, alignment, tires, costing thousands of avoidable repairs. Fuel intake did come lose, nearly causing an engine fire due to defective part which was recalled.it continuously misfires, engine knocks, stalls.ecm was recalled but didn't fix the problem.replaced spark plugs & wires (3 times in 6 months), ignition coil, sensors (oxygen, knock, crankshaft, temp).it stops for a 1-2 days, then comes back.annoying & dangerous.also has acceleration problem.at times, it won't go over 40 mph & also accelerates by itself.brakes have completely failed, though there's no crack in the line, no leaking fluid. The car is a complete lemon.online, there are hundreds of similar complaints.dealers are aware but conveniently can't seem to diagnose the problems especially misfiring.consumers get nickel & dimed doing needless repairs that don't fix the problem. The optima had similar problems w/crankshaft pos. Sensor which was recalled, but dealer denies any relation to problems with the rio. Another problem - lack of availability & high cost of parts.its bait/switch to sell a car with known problems, then guess at needless repairs & sell parts at an astronomical markup.it's cheap to buy, but repair costs make it very expensive.research shows misfiring/engine knock has also led to engine fires.also problems with air bags.my airbag light has been on since purchased, but dealer has yet to fix it. Also door locking problems, people being locked in vehicles.my drivers door locks by itself (manual locks). In case of engine fire or accident, a lock malfunction could cause unnecessary death/injury. These are known problems with hundreds of complaints, yet kia has done nothing to address them.the 01 rio is a lemon and safety hazard.

2001 kio rio.purchased car new from dealer.shortly after purchase of vehicle it shut itself off while slowed down in traffic. After the dealer checked the car, dealer said they would have to put in a new transmission.problem keeps occurring and dealer kept offering different reasons this is happening: type of gas used, gas cap not completely on correctly.numerous times we have brought it into the dealer, they keep telling us they can not find a problem with it when there obviously is.

Oil leaks at the bottom and the top of the engine. Gasket cyl head and head cover slips out. All seal from top and bottom of the car leaks. Steering shakes very bad when the ac is running. (head gasket & cam seals leaks)

I have a 2001 kia rio - i have had nothing but problems with it since i bought it. The engine shakes ( causing the whole car to shake ) intermittently and it does not shift into gear properly ( it is an automatic transmission ) causing the car to hesitate when i accelerate onto highways. I feel this is a real safety issue as i am afraid of getting into an accident because of this problem. I have taken it to the dealer repeatedly, even while it was actually shaking violently and they have the same answer every time...the computer does not tell them that anything is defective on the car - therefore, they can not fix it.i have asked them to replace the computer chip as it obviously is defective if it can't find anything wrong with a car that is running this poorly ...but they refused to do so.it has also had other problems. The car has stalled several times for no reason as i go around a corner ( also a very dangerous problem ) and they were unable to find anything wrong on those occassions either. The airconditioning had to be totally replaced when the car was only 9 months old. The engine mounts collapsed and had to be replaced after only one year. The molding inside the car is constantly coming off. I know of 4 other kia rio owners who have all had similar problems with their cars and all of them have traded in the rios at a great loss rather than put up with the continuous problems. I also want to get rid of my rio but the value of the car is so much less than what i owe on it ( after 3 years of paying on it ) that i can not afford to do so. I have seen many other similar complaints on your website, yet kia denies that there have been any problems with therio.

Aside from the fact that we have never received one recall notice from kia or the dealer, on september 12, 2007, my 2001 kia rio (which we bought new in 1/2001) engine light came on after the car engine had warmed up,and the car began to lurch and chug. It stalled at a light and restarted when i turned the key. I applied the accelerator and it revved to a higher gear and lunged forward then immediately tried to stall in the intersection. I nursed the vehicle back home. It was taken to a mechanic where the code claimed an o2 censor was bad. What was found was a plug missing from a panel area (?). Thought car was fixed. Went to drive it home and again the same identical problem only this time the engine light did not come on, my only indication of the problem was the attempt at stalling again! this happened after the engine was warmed up. Same symptoms and problems only no warning engine light. This is a life threatening danger since it happens with no warning and kia has failed to notify us of any recall notices they have issued concerning our vehicle even though they had our address from us paying them for the car note each month! something needs to be done about their lack of notice to owners and warm engine stalling problems. I have no way of getting the car to a dealer since it will not stay running!

Check engine light seldom goes off.took car to dealership for service and to resolve this problem, light went back on in less than 100 miles after leaving the dealership.same thing happened last time i took it in.

Engine check light comes on repeatedly with cause unknown. The only corrective action dealership did was to change a code in the vehicle's computer system. Faulure causedvehicle not to exceed 5 mph.the brakes were making a loud noise, the air bag light was on, the left window was acting erractically, the regulator had to be replaced, the rear view mirro was inoperative, all 4 door seals were leaking water, there was a shimmy in the steering wheel, the shift indicator strip was out of poistion, the trim around the windshield was loose for the second time, there was a noise coming from the exhaust due to the shiled on the midpipe being loose.

While driving, a motorist flashed their lights to get consumers attention, consumer noticed vehicle was on fire, an automotive analyst stated the cause of the fire was due to the failure of the fuel system components related to either a failure of the connection between the steel fuel line mounted to the firewall and the fuel injector fuel rail or a fuel line leak within the hose assembly.

Driving in traffic, made right turn into driveway at 30 mph and the engine died, steering was now unassisted.i rolled the car into a parking spot.the car started upon my return to the car.this has happened at least 6 other times since i've owned the vehicle.the car has less than 60, 000 miles and has amassed numerous repair issues:failure of automatic transmission; rear wheel bearing replacement; defective side mirror that screams at high speeds/freeway driving w/windy conditions; sun visors which do not adhere to placement; and windshield washer pump failure.upon acquiring the vehicle this was the first problem i took the car in for repair.and on subsequent visits, it has been an issue, but the problem persists.

Consumer smelled burning rubber, and then the vehicle stalled and flames emitted from under the hood.the insurance inspector indicated the fire was caused by a fuel line failure at the passenger side firewall.the vehicle was totaled, but dealership didn't offer any contributions to fix the car.

Since december '03, check engine light has come on at least a dozen times. On 2 occassions, car bucks while driving and stalls. Have had it in to the dealer 4 times since december. I am now scared to drive the car for fear it will break down again.

Parked car at work came back out and the door lock was down tried to pull up but is stuck or caught on something. The way the screws are in the door 2 of them cannot be taken out without having the door open. With long legs its very difficult to get in and out of vehicle!!! also trouble with the engine misfiring of sparkplug with some loss of power.

Both door locks get stuck on both the passenger side and drivers side. We have had to climb in the back seat to exit the car. This is very dangerous and could cause death or injury if a fire and could not exit the car.

Two years ago when trying to get into my 2001 rio the drivers side door lock stuck.i took it to the dealership and waited 2 weeks for the replacement part. Now i am having the same problem with my passenger door.car is no longer under warranty, so i am unable to use my passenger side door. Also car stalls when it rains and shakes really bad when it does run.i have to get a ride when it rains, interior lights don't work, bumper has come loose....continual problems with spark plugs, and leaks oil.

I own a 2001 kia rio, i have had nothing but problems since i purchased the car, the dealership refuses to assist with any of them. I no longer have use of my front doors and have to climb through the back door to get into the car. This has been an on going problem. Not only that but the seat belts in the back keep defraying and are not safe. And the seat has metal in it that has cut through the fabric on the seats.

Consumer was unable to enter the vehicle byusing the key.when the consumerentered vehicle from the unlocked back door it was still not possible to open the doors from inside.

Front driver's side door would not unlock in 2004. Repaired at dealership at cost to me of $300. Driver's side door will not unlock in 2007. The driver's side door is rarely used as there is only one driver of the vehicle.

The first time i heard a noise coming from the right front passenger side of my car and thought it was either my brakes or a pvc boot going out on my car.december 4, 2003.i was shocked to find my wheel-rim was seriously cracked.it was cracked almost the entire way around just abut an inch from the holes for the lugs.if it would have broke completely when i was driving home from arizona to fresno, california, my passenger and i could have been seriously injured or killed. I do take around 6-8 long distance trips per year.we were lucky.the wheel-rim was replaced with one purchased from a used auto parts garage.the second time this problem occurred was july 1, 2004 on the right front passenger side.again i heard the noise and thought of other possible problems, but was totally shocked when the tire repairman checked and told me that i had a crack in my rim.i called several kia dealers, one never returned my call and the other said that nothing could be done because there is no recall being done for that problem. I then went to a used auto parts store an purchased another rim and had it replaced at the tire repair shop where i do business.after thinking about it i went back and bought a spare rim just in case this problem should arise again. This time i kept the broken rim.another problem i have is the right side door won't unlock as it has come apart inside the door.the inside door panel will have to be taken off to get to the inside it to repair it.these are problems which i feel should be repaired by the dealers but of course are not being done.

March 17 2001 is the date that i purchased my kia rio since then i have had nothing but multiple problems.my biggest complaint is the transmission it jerks between gears and shakes horribly when i go over 50mph.every time i have taken it in they tell me there is nothing wrong.i have a friend who also has the same year and model car asi and her engine has blown up twice.i have never been so afraid to drive a vehicle.

This vehicle was wonderful at first...then problems.from the check engine light coming on an the overdrive light flashing, to my mirror on the right pasenger side not working on the inside.ibought the car with my fiance, with the intent of her driving it to work.we were on a road trip to a town 2 hours away, 2 weekends in arow with 5 people in the car.the next week my fiance said the car did not handle correctly on the way home from work, which is about 20 miles.she had me back it out of the garage and drive to the end of our streeet.something wasn't right so i parked it in the drive way, called rosemurgy's and had them send a tow truck.the axle was not looking the way it should.the checkengine light came on again .if its moist outsideshe has to start the car and let it run a minute or it acts up.besides almost having a major fatality with the axle, she was visiting a friend who's driveway was at a slant.the vehicle couldn't be taken out of park. Saturday morning she luckily got a hold of the dealership and was told to stick a metal piece or anything that would fit down the hole next to the gear shifter. Drive home with no tail lights,20 miles, with a circuit tester to go from reverse to drive.she now drives it knowing i'll sue if she is injured.she doesn't understand how she's gotten no help with these problems.imagine thinking everytime you get in your car the axle could break at anytime.imagine making sure you carry a meat thermometer in your glove box incase you get stuck on a hill?not worth the monthly payment, thank god for the warranty.

I bought my car used, and have had it for only six months.i read the other complaints filed and feel a little better knowing that it isn't just my car with the problems.but i wish the dealers would recognize that they are ripping us off by not fixing the obviously defective parts.my rio has the check engine light on (not all of the time) but when it does come on it is accompanied by the the flashing overdrive off light.this usually lasts for a couple of days.just when i was getting used to that the engine started shaking with only the check engine light on, it did not stall but it would have if i didn't pull into a parking lot and turn the car off.a few hours later i turned it back on and no problems again until just last week the engine started shaking again.lets not leave out the minor problems though.i also have problems with my interior falling apart and my cover for my fuses falls off every time i get in.my paint is peeling off, i have had to replace my battery that died out of nowhere.my warranty is almost up and i have had no help with these problems thus far.

Problems with 2001 kia rio.*mrthe consumer's vehicle experienced multiple fuel system problems.the consumer received a recall notice in reference to the fuel distributor and main fuel tube assembly.the consumer contacted the dealer who indicated that the problems were not related.the vehicle also had other problems.the engine would hesitate while driving.the dealer replaced the spark plugs and wires.the rear end vibrated.the dealer replaced both rear dampers.the consumer heard a clunking noise during acceleration.the dealer determined that he motor mounts were cracked.the rear wheel bearings were worn excessively.

Airbag light has been on since january 2002. Dealer found no problem. Then onmay 15 2002 consumer hit a mailbox at 45 mph, and neither airbag deployed. $ 4500.00 damage to vehicle. The consumer replace front tires several times possible suspension problem.

I bought my new kia rio in september of last year, its only 9 months old, and has 19,000 miles on it. The tires haveworn to the steelon the inside edge only, no shimmy nor shake, that would make me think its analignment problem. I called hankook the manufacturer of the tire, they told me to call kia but said no warranty, kia said the same, i am getting no where, the tires are supposed to be good until 36,000 miles.? already i have to buynew tires and no percentage off from the manufacturer or dealer? seems like they putan anything tire on here that looks nice, but no quality, that could blow at anytime. I will have to purchase new tires, i can not drive on these. I feel they havemade a defective problem and they hankook, nor kia the dealer i bought them from wants to help. The service manager, chip carr, has not returned my calls at kia.thank you.(tiresize: 13)( dot number:tire size: 13 )

Certain passenger vehicles may have a manufacturing flaw that could cause the wheels to crack under long term driving fatigue. If cracks occur, wheel noise and vibration will result and become progressively worse over time. What i would like to know is if we got all the cars becouse my 2001 rio is doing the same thing that is listed above?

Kia initiated a recall on the 2001 kia rio for replacement of the four standard steel wheels with four alloy wheels.the recall was made because of the potential that the standard steel wheels could cracklead to wheel failure.the letter indicated all 4 wheels would be replaced.i took the car to arlington kia in palatine to have the recall serviced.i presented the letter to the service department.rather than replacing the wheels, the dealer only inspected them, indicatingthere was no problem. While i am glad to know this, i am not quite certain this is the right response to the issue.i am not satisfied by kia's solution.while there was no damage upon their inspection, it does not guard against development.unsatisfied with the dealer's response, i contacted customer care to inquire whether or not the dealership had done enoughi talked to [xxx], a customer care manager, who explained to me, while the letter did say kia would "replace all four original equipment wheels at no cost," what that really meant was that i would get a ten minute inspection, and if nothing was wrong, i'd be left with the potentially defective part. I find it discouraging that kia has not followed through on what was indicated in the letter. I was on a major interstate doing the speed limit of 65 mph when i heard a loud pop sound.the car started to shake and i thought i had a flat tire.i immediately put on my hazard lights and slowed down to reach the nearest exit ramp.i was alone in the car and thank god i had no children in the car and as soon as i reached the exit ramp i got off the exit and called aaa.they sent a tow truck but when the driver went to put the car up he noticed the right back wheel was extremely loose and then called for a flat bed.while being towed to my mechanic with the car on the flat bed the wheel came completely off.i looked online for recalls on my car and there was one issued in 4/20/2005 and i was never notified by kia or the dealer where i purchased the car about this issue when the recall began on 6/22/2005.i am worried now that i may have to pay out of pocket for this repair which kia motors should have notified me on.

While driving at any speed consumer heard a thumping sound coming from the rear passenger side of the vehicle.upon closer inspection right rear wheelshad severe cracks in the walls.the cracks were such that onecould actually hold the wheels to the light and see through them. The dealer replaced the bad rim under warranty and kept the bad rim.

Consumer noticed that the center of the wheels cracked and fell apart.consumer began to hear a clanking sound coming from the left rear wheel.as the consumer began to remove the wheel the center broke up in the process.this problem affected the two back wheels.

Vehicle began making a loud grinding noise when coming to a stop. Thinking it may just be the brakes that were going out, returned vehicle to the shop. Upon inspection the shop found that all 4 of the 13 inch wheels had stress fractures. The front 2 were the worst as they had begun to split. Was told that there was a possiblity of a fatal crash had this not been brought to there attention when it was.

I have a 2001 kia rio, manual transmission.at 32000 miles the left front rim cracked, and was replaced under warranty.i had the right front crack at 62000 miles.kia did not consider this a defect, so i had to purchase a new rim for 98.00, and have it mounted at additional cost.i spoke with the dealer, and kia directly about this being a safety concern.kia's response was since it was out of warranty, they would only cover manufacturing defects.the 13 inch steel rim has no damage which would have caused the tear in the steel; circumference with the lug bolt holes. *nlm

July 31,2004.i started hearing a noise towards the right side front tire.with in 2 days the noise got louder.i took the car the the kia dealer and they told me that they did a visual inspection on my car and did not find anything wrong with it. I was also told i had to many mile (61,000) miles that if they took it apart to find the problem i would be charged $75.00 per hour. I did not take it back.with in the next couple of weeks the noise got louder and i felt the tire was not performing the same.so i took it to where i get my tires.there they also did a visual and they could not find the problem.i was told i need new tires. I did not drive my car for 1 week so i could get the money to take the car to the dealer. I took my car to another mechanic shop on sunday there he took off the tire checked the brakes, the roter and all the bearings and screws under the car.he said he could not figure out what was going on. So i bought the car with me to work so i could take it into the dealer after work.i talked to the mechanic at my place of employment about what has been goingon and he asked that i let him take a look at the car.so he took off the tire and set it aside and started his search.when he was about to put the tire back on to the car he noticed a crack around the rim.the crack went all the way through to the other side.it is almost a complete circle.it was about to totally crack off the car.i called the dealer and they said they can not help me due to the miles i had on my car. I do drive alot but i feel this is a total defect in the rim.i have 2 rims on order

Cracks have accumulated on the front passenger rim. All four original rims along with one replacement rim cracked.

Loud repeating noise coming from wheel.took it into mechanic, told me it was the hubcap rubbing on the rim.applied tape to hubcap to solve problem.noise continued, i decided to check the problem, and just before i arrived home, my tire fell off.the rim failed.hald was bolded to the car, the other half was in the tire.no one has seen this happen before, and it appears to be a defect in the tire rim.

Dt:consumer has a 2001 kia rio. She received a recall notice in june of 2005. She contacted the manufacture and was told that it would be september before dealer would have parts to do recall repairs. Manufacturer contacted her back on august 18, 2005 to tell her it would be september 9, 2005 before the rims would be available. She asked if she could get a loaner or rental vehicle untilvehicle would be fixed.

While driving a squeaking noise was heard.it was determined that the front driver's side wheel rim cracked.

My vehicle started making a horrible noise in the front.it sounded like the brakes were digging into the rotor so i figured i needed a brake job.when i removed the wheels i looked at my brakes and they were fine, i then looked at my wheel and noticed a very large crack all they way around.i went the dealership where i purchased my vehicle and they refused to do anything since it was out of warranty.they insisted that when i had new tires put on that they must of used too much force and cracked the rims.i went to the tire place where i had just recently purchased tires and they said there was no way they could have done it, but put my car up on the racks and checked the rest of my wheels.come to find the other three rims were cracked as well.i took my concerns to the service manager of the automotive network i purchased my car from and he agreed that it was a safety issue and replace all four wheels with brand new ones from kia.

While driving it felt like the vehicle was off balance.this occurred because the right front rim busted. This occurred twice two years ago because consumeroverloaded thevehicle. The same rimbusted again without the vehicle being overloaded.

The front wheel rims have cracked for the 4th time. The rims make a loud noise, the vehicle drives different, in reverse there isa clicking sound and it has progressed.the rim cracked 2 days later after being repaired by the dealer.the consumer indicated getting a second opinion since the dealer isn't correcting the problem.nlm

In december of 2003 i started hearing a loud clanking from the passenger-side, rear wheel. Assuming it was the rear brakes needing replaced, i purchasedthe parts. Upon removing the hub cap i saw that the rim was severely cracked. Within an inch or so of actually breaking completely apart. (the brakeswere not worn.) when i returned the brake parts to high desert kia, in victorville, ca., itold the service department about the cracked rim and inquired of the warranty on the rims. I was told the warranty period is 30,000 miles.(at the time, my vehicle had approx.55,000 miles.) then in june of 2004, i heard the same clanking from the driverside, rear wheel. Upon inspection i found that this rim had also cracked in the same manner as the first.
