Takara recall, i had to replace the contact assembly clock after air bag sign would not turn off, certain cars were recalled due to this problem , i believe it should be looked into additional years as well since the problem is still on going
I was involved in a high speed, rear end collision in which i was traveling at approx 55mph when another large vehicle changed lanes from right to left, right in front of me causing me to collide with them. The result was significant front end damage to my car and significant bodily injury to myself because of the failure of my brakes to adequately stop my car and the failure of the air bags to deploy resulting in my body and head rapidly flying forward into the steering wheel.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v363000 (air bags); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified and was not able to confirm when the parts were to become available. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
On 11/3, my wife was in accident in our optima, wherein she was t-boned. She was driving approximately 30mph, when another driver drove through a stop sign and, presumably, accelerated into the middle of the driver side of our car. None of the airbags deployed, and we're convinced that one should have. After speaking to the body shop, they tell me that "the sensors are designed to deploy only when the car is hit just the right way." likewise, kia responded that, "it's our opinion (based on a photograph i provided) that the location of the impact and its force wouldn't have triggered the deployment of airbags." in response to that, i asked, "clearly, you know what doesn't constitute the deployment, but what criteria would be necessary for the airbags to deploy." every time i ask, they say there is no hard-and-fast answer. I've also asked if it makes sense for kia to see the vehicle or ask the body shop for the results of their sensor-testing before making an opinion. To that, the kia rep said, "no, we wouldn't do that. Our airbag-specialist's opinion is conclusive."
The orange square wrench light on the dashboard came on but as soon as the car was turned off would go away.no trouble codes showed up. It happened 3 times in a week so once it popped on, went to the dealership to diagnose while it was still running. While driving there, the car had very little power-making the left turn into the dealership (crossing heavy oncoming traffic) was scary since the gas pedal was to the floor and the vehicle was barely moving. The dealership said the drive motor temp sensor in the hybrid system was going out and the car was in safe mode and had code p0a2b in the history. Because i am the 2nd owner of the car, kia will not cover the repair under warranty even though the car is under 100,000 miles. They designed this part so the sensor cannot be replaced-the entire drive motor must be replaced at a cost of $6251. This is absolutely ridiculous that a customer can be left footing the bill for a faulty and unsafe design. This is not something that a owner has any control over.

While driving car shut off and hybrid battery went dead. Is says 'hybrid system warning shut off vehicle and do not drive'. I had the car checked and the engine seems to be locked up. I have seen several complains on this and i won't pay for a new engine when kia needs to be responsible.
Without warning the engine overheated while driving in the highway.the engine made a loud noise and began smoking ... The vehicle became immobilized i pulled off to the side of the road and opened the hood.there was so much smoke.the car turned on afterwards but the engine did not start.within seconds the battery shutdown.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the vehicle shut-off with the hybrid system warning message displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to rick case kia located at 3190 satellite blvd nw, duluth, ga 30096, to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the hydraulic control system was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 154,440.
The electric motor hydraulic pump needed to be replaced i was told it wasnt a recall however im seeing several of the same complaints. While driving about 55 mph mycheck engine light came on message appeared telling me to stop do not drive cant drive safely.now my vehicle is making a loud knocking noise i have no acceleration power and i have no oil leaks but my car is burning up oil.
I was getting off the interstate on september 27, 2018 when my car died and i could not even put on my emergency lights cars behind me almost hit me. I had my car towed home and made a appointment with the kia dealer here in columbia, south carolina. After waiting for them to run a diagnostic test i was told by the service manager the engine failed and they would send paper work to seeif the warranty would cover it. I have been without a car for a weeks now with no form of transportation nor assistance. I have been getting several different explanations about what was wrong with my vehicle. I cannot get a loner car until the company approves the engine under warranty. This has caused major stress and problems with my job. My car only has 68,000 miles and was in good condition until this problem . I had no warning other than the hybrid system failure notice that came on the dash and stated pull over do not drive and hybrid battery not charging. This has caused me undue stress and hardship and much difficulty getting to work.
The hybrid system broke down at 85k. Was replaced by kia after threatening legal action. At 103k. We never missed maintenance or a oil change. The engine through a rod on a 5 lane interstate doing 65mph, blowing and destroying the engine. Putting my family of 5 at serious risk. Kia wants 4500k or 8000k to replace the faulty engine. Optima engines were recalled for this exact reason. The optima hybrid engines were not recalled despite suffering the same failures as normal optima engines. Joining the class action.
Our car is currently at the dealer for the 4th time for the same problem. Last spring the engine warning light came on with the message "hybrid system warning! safely stop and do not drive". The dealer said it was the battery (regular, not hybrid) so we had that replaced (out of warranty - we paid for that). This past august, the warning message appeared again - the dealer said there had been a technical bulletin, and they performed an update (covered by warranty). We had the car back for a few days and the message appeared again, as well as the following message "check charging system". The dealer replaced a wire (under warranty). A couple of weeks ago, the check engine light came on and the hybrid system warning appeared again. This time (4th time) the dealer said that the tractionmotor needed replacing and that we needed a new transmission (also under warranty). We believe that there is an inherent problem with this car.
Today i just got my car back from the dealership yesterday for the brakes failing in the hybrid system they told me everything was fine but the mechanic said to me that we don't know what's going on with the car so they let me leave with it i was in lake worth today doing 45 miles per hour and it did it again and said check brake car shut off my brakes failed and i ran into a median to stop my car. Kia corporation is not doing nothing about this the dealership does he even have an answer for me and that is gunther kia. I believe that i am going to die if i drive this car anymore and i have a 4 year old child that they do not care about i have complained to the kia corporation 5 times already
Tamara recall. While driving down freeway the car turned completely off. Also the back windows don't roll up or down all the time with the switch. Defective switches.
Takata recalli just recently purchased my hybrid in december. With it being winter, i of course did not use the air conditioning unit. Now as it is summer, i have used the ac. Each time i use the ac the motor starts making an extremely loud noise, and the ac at times stops working. With that, the temp gauge goes out of control. The vehicle may be stationary or in motion, and at any speed the motor will increase in noise.
Vehicle has 130,000 miles.while driving on a highway vehicle started to lose power when in cruise and motion is lost.stepping on the gas does not get any acceleration.this occurred again on a highway and displaygives me the hybrid error do not drive warning.this occurs when cruise is set and also not in cruise.i step on the gas and there is no acceleration.after shutting the vehicle off for a few seconds the car functions normally.i am also having back up camera issues which leads me to believe this may be an electrical issue.my display gives me the warning message about objects behind me but the image sometimes does not show.the image sometimes is there when i put the vehicle in reverse and sometimes not.these problems all started at the same time.kia was contacted as we thought it may just be a computer upgrade.they told the dealer there are no upgrades.we also had a non dealer check the vehicle for error codes but there weren't any.the vehicle checked out fine.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving various speeds, the contact heard a clicking noise coming from the steering wheel. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that a disk inside the steering wheel needed to be replaced. In addition, the air flap system sensor and check engine warning indicators illuminated. The contact called casey kia (located at 11999 jefferson ave, newport news, va 23606, (757) 347-8247) and a diagnostic appointment was scheduled. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
This car severely hesitates/stalls after coming to a stop at intersections (red lights, stop signs, yield signs, and etc).car hesitates/stalls for 2-3 seconds before accelerating while at a dead stop. This has causes several near accidents and scares to my family, friends, and myself. This morning, i pushed the gas pedal to the floor and the car did not accelerate/respond until 2-3 seconds later.this is serious and dangerous problem, while pulling out into traffic incoming cars can close the safety gap quickly in 2-3 seconds.cold weather causes the car to hesitate/stall more often than warmer weather.i urge the federal government to step in and force kia to find solution to this problem before this issue cause a fatality.fuel economy is another issue in this car (hybrid), i typically don't get the estimated 35 mpg/city that the dealership sold me on, it is usually 28-30 mpg/city.
I was driving at 45 miles per hour in all sudden my car shuts off and says hybrid safety issue check break. The car shut off on me and my brake went right to the floor and i could not stop. So i ran into a field thank god that was right there and i had my four year old kids in the car. I turn the car back on and everything went back to normal started driving it did it again and my brake went right to the floor and said the same thing. I have saw four other complaints about this. It is in the dealership i do not know what it is yet but this scared the crap out of me it could have killed me and my four year old. I was going 45 miles per hour when this happen. It said hybrid cyst safety issue check brake in the brake one tree to the floor and i could not stop. Prices on the main road not a highway. I was in fort lauderdale florida on 19th street when this happened in lauderhill florida
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle started to slow down and then stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. The contact powered off the engine. The vehicle was restarted, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hybrid battery failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in a recall. The approximate failure mileage was 107,000.

The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the vehicle started to overheat. A warning light illuminated indicating that the hybrid battery power was low. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate. The contact coasted to the side of the road and the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to jts kia of columbia (230 killian commons parkway, columbia, sc 29203) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
I recently started hearing a knocking noise coming form the engine when accelerating. I work at lexus of austin and had the car diagnosed. They determined that the engine was suffering from a connection rod failure. The sound kept getting louder and louder, i finally took the car to southwest kia in new braunfels, tx. They also diagnosed the car as having a connection rod failure. I would need a need engine. The car is a 2012 with only 71,000 miles. I am not the first owner so the warranty ended at 60,000 miles. The engine suffered the same failure as the kia optima recall covers on the non-hybrid engines. Kia paid for a portion of the repairs. I still had to pay $2,681 out of pocket. I believe this should be covered under the recall. I have found several instances online of people with the hybrid engine and connection rod failures. I was also told by kia that when they drained the oil, the oil had metal shavings in it. The same symptom as the recall engines. Kia must be forced to add the hybrid engines to their recall. The parts are failing from the same issues as the recalled parts. I did not have the time to argue with kia over the cost of repairs because i needed my car back asap in order to drive to work. I should be refunded the cost of the repairs and kia should be required to recall the hybrid engines that are the same year as the gas engine recalls.
The contact owned a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving approximately 60 mph, the contact heard an abnormal banging noise under the hood. The vehicle momentarily lost power and the contact noticed black smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment. The fire department extinguished the fire. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was deemed destroyed. The technician stated that the fire was due to a connecting rod malfunction. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving highway speeds, the "hybrid system failure, please pull over and turn off vehicle" message illuminated and the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle would not restart and was towed to jt's kia of columbia (230 killian commons pkwy, columbia, sc 29203) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed. The vehicle was not repaired.the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling), but the vehicle was not included.the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not under a recall. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 105,000.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated while her son was driving at 55 mph, the vehicle stalled with several warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to southside kia located at (9401 atlantic blvd, jacksonville, fl 32225), to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer had not been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.
My kia hybrid was bought new in 2013. It was a 2012 model. Had it serviced every 7500 miles with amsoil 25,000 mile oil. Was well pleased until at 114,000 miles after just having serviced, the engine failed. Had it towed to a different dealer than where i purchased as it was closer. Well to say the least a catastrophic engine failure. Kia sadi no long blocks were available and would send short block form korea. No recall on hybrids but it is the same 2.4 engine that has failed for many. Long story short, it took 63 days to get a short block which cost me 3156.00 to install. To say the least i have retained and attorney and hopefully we can get another calss action suit as the rod was laying in the oil pan just like the recalls. I am happily driving a new honda!!
While driving on a highway around 45mph, the engine suddenly made a rattling noise, then shortly after, made a loud squealing noise and then a sudden jolt.the car shut down and showed an error about the hybrid system malfunction and i experienced a quick drop in speed and was unable to accelerate.after pulling over, the car would not start.car was towed to dealer and they were able to start vehicle, but it makes a loud 'clanking' noise and car vibrates.dealer informed that appears a part inside engine had failed and will need complete engine replacement.
Bought a used 2012 kia optima from a kia dealership on 1/12/18.i did not drive this vehicle from 1/13/2018 - 1/19/18.started driving this vehicle and 5 (five) days later, on 1/23/18 the vehicle blew a rod in the engine.after several unsuccessful attempts at having the dealership fix the issue at their expense, i was getting nowhere.i contacted kia headquarters and they assisted me with communication with the dealership and getting the engine rebuilt (as a goodwill by the dealership).had the car towed to the dealership on 1/25/18; they had my vehicle for exactly 1 (one) month while the dealership rebuilt the engine.i received the car back from dealership on 2/23/18.on 3/6/18 as i was driving on freeway, the car started to lose power while driving.i was driving at approximately 70 mph on freeway, and car just started losing power.the car slowed down to approximately 40 mph and engine oil light turned on & off sporadically.no matter how much i tried to accelerate, the car would not go over 40 mph.this was very dangerous as i was scared that i would get rear-ended on the freeway.i slowly moved over the shoulder and turned off the car; i waited approximately 30 minutes before turning the car back on and proceeding to my personal mechanic (not kia dealership).my mechanic said not to turn car off; he inspected car & scanned it.no error codes were detected.he said maybe it was a fluke and to just continue to drive it.on 3/12/18 the same thing happened again.this time i took it to my local kia dealership and left it.after a scan & test drive, the mechanic could not find anything wrong with the car.mechanic drove it the next day over 80 miles and this time he did experience the same reduction of power.he scanned vehicle again but no error codes show.it's still at dealership 3/19/18.
While driving car shut off and hybrid battery went dead. Is says 'hybrid system warning shut off vehicle and do not drive'. I had the car checked and the engine seems to be locked up. I have seen several complains on this and i won't pay for a new engine when kia needs to be responsible.
While driving about 40 miles from home around midnight, on a busy freeway (i-5), going about 70 mph, my car suddenly flashed a warning about the hybrid battery discharging and to pull over. Then the power steering was gone and the car shut off. Thankfully we were able to coast to the side before getting hit. After about 5 minutes on the side of the road everything died including the emergency flashers and we were left in the dark waiting 2 hours for a tow truck. This is a serious safety hazard and we could've been hit or caused another accident.the car has not started since, however if the battery is actively being charged it will light up the dash board which just flashes welcome repeatedly and won't start. Currently at a kia dealership in tacoma, wa and waiting to hear what they think is wrong. From reading other stories on this site, sounds like this a reoccurring issue for kia and there was a recall for 2012 optimas, just not the hybrids.
Need to replace complete belt tensioner & bracket assembly & serpentine belts. My concern is the plastic cracking in this assembly, the evaporative canister, also plastic is cracked and will be replaced also. Was there a bad batch of plastic used on these cars?cost to replace belt tensioner, bracket assembly & belts is approx. $800.00. The canister is covered by kia - cost 164.00.
Engine locked up @ 100,104 miles. Car was maintained meticulously. Never missed a oil change. Kia replaced the hybrid engine @ 80k. A year later. My family is driving down i-85 @ 65mph when the engine starts smoking and making some loud sound. The engine dies. We by the grace of god, get to the side of the highway and coolant is pouring out while the engine is just pouring smoke. The hybrid warning system is flashing. Have it towed to kia. Kia stated internal engine failure. Refuses any goodwill or assistance. Wants $4500 to $8000 for a new engine. These are the same engines that got recalled but built at a different plant. The hybrids were not included in the recall. Just a matter of time before someone gets killed by kia's corporate greed. I'll never buy another kia product. Ever.
After ~20k miles, i noticed a slight tapping/knocking noise coming from the engine. I took the car to the dealership for maintenance and asked about the noise. They said there was nothing wrong. Over time, it got a bit louder but not much and each time it was taken to the dealership, they would say there was nothing wrong.at ~80k miles, my wife was traveling home on the freeway at 70mph when the engine started making a terrible noise (sounded like a rod was about to come through the engine), lost power, and all of the lights came on, which almost caused her to wreck, as she was in heavy traffic. She immediately pulled over and we had to call a tow truck.after calling the dealership, they said that they wouldn't fix it and that i'd have to pay 7k to have the engine replaced.i ended up buying an engine from a wrecked 2014 kia optima hybrid. So much for a warranty. After doing research, it seems that there are numerous people having the exact same issues i've experienced.
I was driving on a two lane highwaywhen my vehicle started to stall, as if it was going to stop, when i pressed the accelerator, the car slightly speeds up but then starts to stall again. After several repeat episodes of stalling, my engine light comes on. Since there was no stores in my immediate area and no cellular service in the area, i proceeded to driveand moved into the outer lane. The cycle of stalling and increasing continued repeatedly.once i reacheda service area, i was able to call a tow service to the nearest dealership that happened to be a hyundai dealership. They ran a diagnostic check and found nothing but did change my oil and the filter. For the rest of the day my car drove fine, but monday morning on my way to work back to the same stalling cycle and the engine light on. I drove to the kia dealership and left it for another diagnostic test. After a week and a halfi receive a call that the test showed the crankshaft senors needed to be replaced with a cost of $200.00. After three weeks, i receive a call that my car is fixed.i pay the charges and drive away;after driving 10 miles, my car begins to stall, engine light comes on, the car is making a loud knocking noise and the car has a burning smell. I drive back to the dealership, and another diagnostic test is done. Then a kia salesmen states "your engine needs to be replaced but the car is still driveable; however,at some point, your engine will lock up and the the car will stall and stop." "we will take your car as a trade in towards a new kia."i ask if my car will be repaired under the kia recall for the optima. I was told no,the hybrid optima was not recalled.the salesmen looks at the interior of the car and states "it does have a burn smell." he gives me his number and i drive away. As of today kia refuses to fix my car under the recall and i am left renting a vehicle daily.

While driving, at night with my two year old son, on a two lane road my car starting making a loud knocking noise, i began to lose power quickly. Thank god i was able to get the car to the edge of the road. I called family, who said to stay put, they brought a trailer to load my car on. I wasn't sure what to do next, i was being told the motor had thrown a rod. Sadly they were all correct. I called kia headquarters, they gave me a case number and the name of a dealership near me, which is still 60 miles away, west palm beach kia. I towed the car over on april 3, 2018, after their diagnoses i was told i needed a motor. I too questioned the kia optima recall, i was told the hybrids are not included in that recall, neither was my vin. Today is may 18, 2018, my car is still at west palm beach kia awaiting a motor. Since being at west palm beach kia, who i remind you was suggested by kia headquarters i have been through three service managers. I have been informed that i will have to pay $3500 of the $8000 bill, due to kia goodwill." tentative date of may 29, 2018", which is the third change of date also. My car is still there with amy car has 92,000 miles on it. With kia offering to pay at all, it seems they know they have a problem motor, with a safety issue so why is there not a recall?? my two year old son and i could have been hurt seriously if a semi tractor trailer or pick up truck had been behind me. Please issue a recall before people get killed!!!
Tamara recall. While driving down freeway the car turned completely off. Also the back windows don't roll up or down all the time with the switch. Defective switches.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving approximately 20 mph,the engine shut down and the hybrid system failure indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to kia of orange (714-602-1301, located at 210 w katella ave, orange, ca 92867) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and requested the contact to provide evidence of regular maintenance. The contact provided the information. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 86,287. *dt
The car will stall/lose power, blow white smoke out the exhaust. This happens on acceleration or driving at normal highway speeds this has occurred on the highway and on city streets. Yesterday on the interstate i was almost rear-ended because the vehicle stalled. It is believed the connecting rod bearings in certain engines fail as metal debris circulate throughout the engine via the engine oil. Over time, the contaminants in the oiling system cause the connecting rod bearings to fracture and spew large amounts of metal debris into the engine oil, which it cannot filter out to maintain necessary oil pressure. There are numerous complaints regarding the issue and this safety concern needs to be addressed.
I took my 2012 kia optima hybrid in for an oil change as we were taking a road trip two days later. Service department said everything looked good. Two days later after driving approximately 2 hours my car started to have a clicking sound as i accelerated (we were going approximately 65mph). There were no check engine lights and on within a minute i heard a clunk sound and my dash read "hybrid system failure. Safety stop and do not drive." the hybrid battery quickly started to decrease so we had no choice but to immediately pull over along a narrow shoulder as we were 15 miles from the nearest town. This was a narrow two lane highway with our car up against the concrete barrier with a lake directly down the other side of the barrier. We were stranded there for approximately 2 hours trying to coordinate a tow truck and taxi (there were three of us. Myself, my husband, and our 3 month old son). The location of where we were stranded was completely unsafe with several semi trucks passing both ways and we had to transfer all our belongings and move our 3 month old son to the taxi along this narrow shoulder on the highway. Once my car was towed to the nearest dealer they said the engine blew and i would need a new short block. After getting my car towed to the nearest dealer to my hometown they said they found metal shavings and my cylinder 1 blew. I was quoted $4,500-$11,000 for the repairs. The service department can attest to my perfect maintenance. Less than three weeks later kia recalls 1.4 million engines and they are claiming my model is not being recalled. I find it odd that the exact issue i had are the exact reasons these engines are being recalled.
I bought a 2012 kia optima hybrid i also bought an extended warranty with my vehicle. November 2016 my wife and two kids were on their way to work and school when the car just shut down while traveling about 55 mph on the highway and would not do anything steering wheel would not even turn. I called the car company i bought the car from and they told me they can't work on hybrids so i needed to find a kia dealership i found one hundred miles away i had the car towed to kia dealership and they said the starting battery was bad in it and would have it fixed. They called me a few days later saying it was not the battery that it needs a new engine. And it would cost around 8,000 to fix and warranty stated they would not fix it due to engine sludge found in the oil pan and motor. The main kia place got involved and said they needed oil changing records so i went to the place where we get our oil changed and they said they just bought the place so i contacted the old owner and he stated that he had burned all oil changing records. I done some research and there are hundreds of the same car having the same problem and the dealerships are telling them the same thing. Sludge was in the motor, poor maintenance on owners. I owe 13,000 on this car and they want 8,000 for the motor to be put in it and this car put my family's life at risk witch you can't put a price on when the car was serviced like it was supposed to be. I just don't know what to do or who else i can go to. I know this is a long confusing story but if you can help any way please let me know and thank you for your time.
My vehicle is a 2012 kia optima hybrid.i have basically had engine problems since driving off the lot.started small and ended up like many others here where after experiencing very loud revving in the engine as i was bringing my car to a stop there was a loud boom from the rear of the vehicle and a thud.i felt like i had been rear ended.after trying to drive it back to a safe space the loud revving stopped as an engine rod was thrown and my hybrid warning sign appeared and the engine then died.the tow truck driver told me i was leaking oil.he towed it back tot he kia dealership where i got the same news as most complaining here...oil sludge and an $11,000 fix. There is a definite engine defect in these vehicles and kia needs to do the right thing and recall the engine and make their customers whole.the consumer stated the dealership was knowingly selling vehicles with unrepaired safety recalls. The consumer stated the engine had catastrophic engine failure.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving approximately 45 mph, the "battery low, hybrid system failed, please pull over and turn engine off" message appeared on the instrument panel. The contact waited approximately five minutes, but the engine never restarted. The vehicle was towed to cavenaugh kia (3315 stadium blvd, jonesboro, ar 72404) where it was diagnosed that the battery was fine, but the engine seized due to sludge. A new engine was needed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 111,000.
I was driving long distance and i heard knocking sound coming from my engine, it became louder and louder so i couldn't drive anymore. The engine knocked off.
Hello my kia engineseizedon the highway i getroutineoil changed andmaintenance done that i could prove on my car the 2012 kia optima non hybrid has this recall on the engine . Kia did not include the hybrid engines but my hybrid engine is the same engine in the recall as the non hybrids
Properly maintained kia optima hybrid ceased operating while being driven on a highway. Symptoms appeared electrical in that all of the vehicle indicators illuminated, then stopped as the vehicle also stopped. When trying to restart the vehicle, the engine ignited in "eco" mode (the hybrid engine started), but the gas engine did not and the vehicle was only marginally road-worthy. It would not get up to speed. Upon examination by a kia dealer, they said they found "large metal pieces," in the oil pan and recommended replacing the short block and reconditioning the cylinders. This is despite the fact that the vehicle had had an oil change the day prior, and had been fully operational, with zero maintenance failures in the 5 years i've owned it. Kia has recalled its gdi engines due to complaints that are strikingly similar to the issue here, but were patently unsympathetic regarding the gas electric hybrid.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle made a thumping noise and a loud boom sound was heard from the rear of the vehicle. The contact noticed brown smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. Eventually, the smoke turned black and appeared from the front and rear of the vehicle. The contact also noticed oil leaking from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, mark kia, where it was diagnosed that sludge was in the engine and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer provided case number: 12369116. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000.
Hello. I have already posted a complaint to this website and i am simply trying to find out why a very noticeable pattern of defects is going unnoticed on these optima hybrid engines. 3/4 of all the posted complaints for the 2012 optima hybrid are due to engine failure from connection issues caused by worn bearings. These are the exact same part failures that lead to the engine recall for standard optima gas engines. Why is nhtsa not contacting kia and forcing their hand on recalling the hybrid engines? there are obvisouly less hybrid optimas than non-hybrid, but the failure rate is just as high or worse than the non-hybrid model. I do not believe hybrid owners should be subjected the risk of an engine failure just because there are less of us. The second issue is that many of us have already replaced our engine because they failed. Either paying in full or with some help from kia, what happens when the new engine fails for the same reason because they were not recalled an forced to recognize the failure and design a fix that will keep it from happening to the replaced engines? i am such a huge fan of kia i own 2 optima's. The other is a gas model that has a replaced recalled engine. I had to pay out of pocket to replace the engine on my hybrid. We are begging for someone to look into the extremely high number of engine failures on these optima hybrid with virtually the same engine as the gas models. Kia claims the engines are different, and they are to some extent, but they share a lot of parts, most of which are the parts that are failing and design flaws. Thank you for your time, i hope someone is actually looking out for the public and reading these post.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated that the engine seized while pulling into her driveway and made an abnormal clunking noise. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to dch kia of temecula (located at 26799 ynez rd, temecula, ca 92591, (951) 268-9198) where it was diagnosed that the engine contained oil sludge and needed to be serviced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact heard an abnormal noise progressing from the engine. The dealer (jim bone kia, 1255 santa rosa ave, santa rosa, ca 95404, (707) 545-7050) and the manufacturer indicated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The hybrid model exhibited the same failure as the recall, but the manufacturer refused to approve the replacement of the engine assembly and the dealer diagnosed that the engine assembly needed to be replaced. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000. ... .updated 11/16/17
I started my car and started driving back home andas i got onto the freeway and the engine turned, i could hear a rattling noise that would match the rpm of the engine. By the time i got home the engine was loud and squealing. I towed it to the dealership the next day, where they said that i needed a new engine due to a"bearing/ connecting rod issue". Which is a reason there is a recall on select optima models. But the hybrid models are not included for some reason. I suspect the failure rate on the hybrids to be abnormally high as well.
Vehicle was in motion at 35 mph and suddenly lost acceleration, woul d not go faster then 15 mph for about 1/2 mile then gave message "hybrid system failure, please pull over and turn off vehicle." the dealership service department says they have replaced the engine with a used one, replaced the hyper-transmission? and the battery. Dealer has ignored requests for further information & itemization or invoice for the alleged repairs and the extended service contract originally only authorized $3851.50 for engine replacement. The other troubles were discovered later, after the engine was replaced and while vehicle was still in dealer's service dept possession. The underbody or flaps underneath, flew off car as customer drove it home upon picking it up. Dealer assumes no responsibility for that or for cracking bumper in the front center of vehicle.
Loud banging noise from the motor then loud band and 2 parts flew out the bottom ant it started spilling oil everywhere
At 116,000, while driving in city car would decelerate and jerked "hybrid warning system-do not drive" light came on. When backing out of parking space, car would jerk backwards. Took to dealer who diagnosed that it needed new transmission. Took car to my mechanic who provided better warranty on transmission work. Replacing transmission has not fixed car.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine rod bearing failed. The vehicle was taken to car pros kia huntington beach located at 18835 beach blvd, huntington beach, ca 92648 who confirmed the engine was damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
Thankfully i was driving down a back road and without any warning my 2012 kia optima hybrid made a loud knocking noise then slowed down and when i pulled over i had a "hybrid battery low" light come on so i have the car towed and replace the battery, still not working. Now the battery light is off but now there's 2 other lights that come on. 1 said "hybrid system warning do not drive" and the other says "check charging system" so i have it towed again but this time to a kia dealership. They called me back the next day and told me that it appeared that my motor seized. They couldn't tell me how or why.. My car only had 75,045 miles on it. So i contact consumer affairs because i heard about the recalls. They even told me that my car was mimicking exactly what the optima recalls were doing. However, because mine was a hybrid it didn't fall under the recall. Which i thought was very unfair. Still nothing they can do, they want $6,200 for a used motor. Mind you i've had the car for 3 1/2 years and have kept up with oils changes etc. Next i found out that i had an extended warranty... But of course it expired 45 miles ago. Again, not fair. Nobody seems to care or want to help me. This is very inconvenient. Now i'm without a car that i'm still making payments on. I'm very disappointed in kia and their customer service. I feel as though if my car was doing exactly what the recalls were doing with the same size motor then how come they won't cover mine to be replaced? i almost want to hire an attorney and have this investigated. I still want to know exactly what is wrong with my car! nobody has answers....
Engine lost power stated smoking all over trunk engine going 60 mph on rt15 thurmont maryland outside of camp david, oil was everywhere loud boom, my grandson was in the back seat at this time as well, dealership telling me they are not at falt or replacing enging,as i see a federal investigation on this issue as well, i need my car repaired or replaced asap,.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and smoke quickly entered the vehicle. Also, the vehicle began to shake uncontrollably. The contact exited the vehicle and called roadside assistance. The vehicle was towed to premier kia of branford (205 north main street, branford, connecticut 06405, (203) 315-2050) where it was diagnosed that the engine seized. The dealer replaced the engine under warranty, but the failure recurred. Four months later, while driving various high speeds, the contact heard a clicking noise and smoke entered the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer again where it was diagnosed that the internal engine seized. The vehicle was not repaired due to the lack of warranty coverage. A police report was not filed for either failure. During both occurrences, the smoke went away once the engine was turned off. There were no injuries. In addition, the contact stated that there was no indication of a fire, but a loud popping noise was heard from the engine compartment. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000. The vin was not available. Consumer attached diagnostic and invoice repair to the car showing the problems with the engine. Nhtsa recall 17v224000 my 2012 kia was supposedly not in this recall but my car bearings according to independent mechanic are already wearing out prematurely at 84000 miles . The car will lose oil pressure and knock (bearing) blow white smoke and stop in the middle of the interstate. This happened once in stop and go traffic and once traveling at 65 mph where car decelerated to 30 mph. Car has always been taken to kia dealership for service but they claim they can not see the service records and will not cover under purchased warranty without them
My name is [xxx], i had problem with my engine on april 7thmy engine suddenly knocked and stopped, but i had under the warranty when i took my car to dealership they said you're 2nd owner ,warranty works only for 1st original ownerbut im 100% sure it was recall issue.when followed by google same problem was with another people, i fixed it from my pocket 4400$ where is a justice i require justice, dealership have to pay for me please help me for this troubleinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
While driving my vehicle car suddenly shuts off in the highway. Big tryck was behind me. Gladly the truck wasnt going fast. Tried to push the button car turned over but didnt crank just made a sound and tge lights in dash board jumped. What is going on with my car. Driving on highway
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the engine seized without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the connecting rod bearings in the engine were worn causing metal shavings to enter the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to sons kia (100 sons dr, mcdonough, ga 30253, (678)619-1393) to be diagnosed. The cause of the failure was confirmed and the contact was provided a quote for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) and stated that the failure was similar. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
While driving the vehicle on the highway upon acceleration the rpms spiked and there was a clicking noise. After releasing the accelerator there was a loud noise like a broken muffler then the car lost power. Pulling to the shoulder the car began to smoke and shortly after stopping the vehicle caught fire from somewhere under the hood which spread to the entire front of the vehicle which then became engulfed in flames before a fire crew could extinguish.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving 60 mph, the "do not drive, place vehicle in park" warning message illuminated. The contact placed the vehicle in park and was unable to shift out of park. The vehicle was towed to jim ellis kia of kennesaw (1221 auto park dr nw, kennesaw, ga 30144, (404) 531-1868) where it was diagnosed that the engine seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
I was on the florida turnpike at about 11pm with my girlfriend 6mo old son my 6year old daughter and niecei was driving at about70mph when the whole car shook and we heard a loud noise my girlfriend said what did you hit i was not sure then within about a mile the car started to lose power and was smoking really bad i pulled the car off to the side of the roadi have geico insurance so i called them for a tow truck after being on the phone with them for about 45 min i was them connected to the police who said they were not open at this timei after hanging up the phone i called geico back who told me they were having trouble finding a tow truck that would come get us from where we were after about 2 hrs they told us that a truck was coming but the baby can't ride in the truck so i had to call a friend to come from port saint lucie florida pick up my girlfriend and the kids we finally made it home at around 4:30 am thank god everybody is okay but this situation could've been a lot worse i was sure that i hit something and i have full coverage so nothing to worry about after sending my car to bev smith kia in ft pierce florida they told the insurance company that it was nothing that i may have hit but a bearing had prematurely failed and threw a rod through the bottom of the motor there is about a 3 in hole in the bottom of the engine so my insurance company will not cover the car they had not even looked at the car and knew what was going on kia has a recall on a number of vehicles with the same problem but my car is a hybrid and it has not been recalled at this time i have been on the phone with kia for over a month they are not wanting to help me a i have found a lot of complaints on the web with the same issues. Kia needs to recall before someone is hurt or even killed! this is unsafe for people to be drivingnote my car only has 80,000 thousand miles
Without warning while driving the engine started knocking when the ev wasn't working, just engine. I coasted to a safe place with the ev and had it towed to my mechanic which stated it was the rods knocking and he knew about the kia engine recall so he asked me to find out if mine was under warranty, apparently the kia engine recall doesn't include my car once i gave them my vin number. Its disturbing to know that it probably should be in the same recall but they say its not...how do i go about making sure its not really covered?
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving approximately 55-60 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and there was a knocking noise coming from the engine. In addition, the oil level warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle started to lose power. The contact was able to safely move the vehicle off the roadway. The vehicle was towed to southwest kia austin (13175 us-183 n, austin, tx 78750, (512) 583-1900) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,200.
This vehicle is dangerous and extremely faulty. I have had to replace the transmissiondue to the car traveling at no more than 55 mph. In addition, there was extreme knocking within the steering wheel in which the steering wheel had to be replaced as well. Then my car started drifting again with white smoke coming from under the hood and exhaust. Now kia is saying that the engine is faulty and needs to be replaced. My car is not being serviced for a recall on the engine because it is a hybrid, yet non-hybrid kia cars have a recall for it. This is the same thing. What a disservice! kia needs to quit making cars altogether if the internal work has no endurance. I'm still paying on this vehicle. This car is a danger, waste, and disservice. Several complaints have been noted in reference to the same thing. What if the car exploded?then what? this car could have harmed me or others. Please recall the engine and anything else this car has that is unmanageable or unhealthy. The opportunity cost is pisspoor.
(my report is exactly the same as id 10552403)this car severely hesitates/stalls after coming to a stop (red lights, stop signs, yield signs, and etc). Car hesitates/stalls for ~2-3 seconds before accelerating while at a dead stop. This has caused several near accidents. When it happens, i push the gas pedal to the floor and the car doesn't respond at all for about 2-3 seconds. This seems to be a serious problem when pulling out into traffic as incoming cars can close the safety gap quickly in 2-3 seconds. Cold weather causes the car to hesitate/stall more often than warmer weather from my experience, but it's happened when car has been running for over 20 minutes, as well. I hope kia will check into this problem as my local dealership has no answer.
As i was driving to work yesterday 8/7/2018, my engine started making a weird sound. I just purchased the car from a private seller on 5/29/18 with 80k miles on it, as of yesterday it has 85k miles on it. I took the car for an oil change, just in case, but was told the car was only a portion of a quart low on oil, but they proceeded with the oil change, and told me the sound was a engine knock and advised that i take it to a dealership. I drove the car to the dealership and was told it was a engine rod knock and that the engine is toast. I was told the repairs (a new engine) would cost roughly $7000, as i'm not the original owner so the 100k mile warranty does not apply to me, and i'm passed 60k miles as the second owner. The turbo engines were recalled for this exact same issue. This has to be recalled. It is unsafe
I heard a ticking noise coming from under the hood. I stop to check the oil, it was fine. It had also been change about 3500 miles before this happen. By the time i got home it was much worst! i check the oil again, there was still oil at the appropriate level. This time the dip stick had metal shavings on it. I called my local garage and had it towed to them. They said it needed a new engine! i had it brought to the dealer that i bought it from kemper kia of bridgewater nj. They also agreed the engine needed to be replaced. They told me a recall for this engine just came out. The recall is for premature bearing wear causing these engines to throw a rod. This is exactly what happen to my engine! they said because i am the second owner it is not covered under the 10year 1000,000 mile warranty. My car has 88,989. This car should be covered! some how my vin number is not on the recall list! they have had the car for 3 weeks now! kia has only put me on their escalation department.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving 65 mph, an abnormal noise was heard coming from the engine. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the noise persisted. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (mcguire kia, 21280 us-27, lake wales, fl 33859) where it was diagnosed that the oil port was clogged. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that they would contact the dealer where the vehicle was located. The failure mileage was 96,000.
While driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and completely shut off. In addition, a "do not drive "warning message illuminated. The vehicle was towed to kirby kia of ventura (6424 auto center dr, ventura, ca 93003, (805) 644-2241) where it was diagnosed that the bearing inside the engine started to wear and shred, which caused the engine to seize. The dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,000.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated while driving 75 mph, when she heard an abnormal noise and the vehicle began to decelerate. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated the vehicle failed to exceed 40 mph. The contact parked on the side of the road and had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to bob king kia (1725 link rd, winston-salem, nc 27103, (336) 724-3866) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 20v750000 (engine) however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.
I was driving to drop off a friend and jumped on the highway. Everything was fine until i stopped at a stoplight coming off the highway and heard a knocking sound. I never got a check engine light or anything still to this day. I had it taken to the nearest kia dealership and they said 3 connecting rods are out and it has a cracked block. They quoted me $7600 to fix it. Its been 6 months and i havent been able to do anything with with. My insurance said they cant do anything and i had an extended warranty but i went over the mileage. I have gap insurance but the insurance company wont do anything about it. I know the other optimas are having the exact same issues but kia hasbt released a recall for the hybrids.
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. While driving 40 mph, the "pull car to the side and turn off" warning message appeared on the instrument panel. When the contact turned off and attempted to restart the vehicle, all the instrument panel gauges and indicators illuminated. The vehicle was unable to restart and was towed to kia of waldorf (3188 crain hwy, waldorf, md 20603, (301) 645-1711); however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,000.
2012 kia optima hybrid. Vehicle has 69,000 miles. Vehicle was serviced every 3,000 miles. My wife was driving to work on 04/26/18. She was driving on the 143 freeway in phoenix, arizona. She called me at home and said the engine was making a knocking/clanging noise. I could hear the noise on the phone. I told her to pull over. I drove to meet her and investigate. I opened the hood and checked all fluids. All were full and clean. I asked her to start the engine. There was a loud clanging or scraping noise coming from the lower part of the engine on the passenger side. I had her turn the car off and we called a tow truck. The vehicle was towed to camelback kia in phoenix, az. As soon as the car was taken off the tow truck, a service adviser started it for a few seconds. He immediately said the engine failed and had to be completely replaced. Well over $8,000 to replace! he said the warranty would not cover the engine. He said that this happens all of the time. There is no reason an engine should fail at 69,000 miles when it was perfectly cared for. Kia has recalled the other 2012 kia optimas. Where was our kia produced. Most likely the same factory. Kia should recall these and replace the engines.
Upon entering the freeway, my car suddenly made a loud rattling noise. The screen on my dashboard wrote along the lines of "hybrid system warning: safely stop and do not drive!" then my car's engine begins to rev randomly and became unresponsive to my control. I'm not even sure how i managed to pull over, but made it to the side and turned on my emergency lights on a very busy freeway at night. The emergency lane i was pulled over in was so narrow, i had to stay in my car. My car then began to turn on and off repeatedly until it became completely dead and all my lights went out, including my emergency lights. I was praying no car would hit me as i waited for a tow. Had it happened even a second later, such as when i would be traveling at highway speeds, i would more than likely have been in an accident today.
For the past year my car has had a problem losing power in the middle of the freeway, very dangerous, dropping from 70 mph to 40 with no acceleration forcing me to put on my hazards and pull over. Ive taken it to dealerships and payed over $700 for them to tell me they couldnt find anything wrong.the engine oil light comes on thousands of miles before its time to be changed. Today on the street after exiting the freeway, the car started shaking profusely while at a stop sign and the enigine light came on with a warning that stated 'hybrid emergency do not drive' i turned my car off at the stop sign, again, dangerous as it was middle of traffic, to stop the shaking. Turned ot back on and proceeded home which was about 800 ft away, the entire time the engine light was on. The car began making a chirping noise as i drove home. This is ridiculous and dangerous and even though online it states there was an engine recall for 2012 kia optima, my vin # states no recall. What should i do?
While driving on a 4 lane highway, my car jerked and loss power, going from 60 mph to 20 mph. I had the car towed to the dealership and they said a threw an engine rod! the car had 108,189 miles on it. There is a nationwide recall on the kia optima already, but mine is not. It should! the bearing rods go out prematurely and that is exactly what mine did.
We first took it to edwards kia in council bluffs, ia on 2/11/15.when i originally took it to them, the service engine light had just come on and the car had just started doing the lunging and hesitating when shifting in lower gears.it was as if the accelerator was sticking. They downloaded a couple updates and turned the service engine light off.they advised the light came on because of the update that was needed and said that the shifting /idling issue was better.as soon as i drove it, i noticed it was still doing the same thing.on 2/23/15 i took it back in and they advised that there were two parts to the download and that they had put the second part on and thought it was better.they also gave me a kia tech support sheet on how to address the problem.this included warming the car up for 10-15 minutes, driving with the eco on the start of the trip, and to depress the accelerator 10 % more.they advised that was the nature of the hybrid vehicle in the cold weather but it didn't do it the year before.we then took the car to h&h kia in omaha, ne on 3/3/15 and the car is still there 7 weeks later.they have replaced the transmission twice with remanufactured transmissions.i am not sure why they wouldn't put a new one in since the car only has $19,663 miles on it.the have replaced the generator now and still hasn't fixed the problem.the car still isn't showing any codes on the computer and they are waiting for the kia "experts" to arrive.i have not had my car for 8 weeks and they want me to take the car home until the experts arrive but i do not feel safe with it lunging and shifting erratic like it is.
While trying to accelerate, the car randomly has a 2-3 second delay before action.when the problem occurs, the car will coast out into traffic, which may be moving at high speeds.this leaves me exposed to getting hit on a frequent, but irregular basis, and i am afraid to drive the vehicle.the car can also have jerky motions and lunges when accelerating from a stop on an incline, posing a danger to pedestrians and cars nearby.

Over the last month, i have been experiencing many transmission issues where the my 2012 kia optima hybrid is hard shifting between gears 2-3 and 5-6;same when down shifting.i have had to break extra long because of the downshifting, the car 'lurches' forward, and i fail to get sufficient power in the proper gear when i accelerate.
I literally just had my engine replaced (blew in august at 85k miles, dealership had my car for six months while i waited on an engine, cost $7k). I got my car back in mid-february. On march 25th, i was at a stop light, and when i accelerated, the car lagged and lurched forward. This continued any time i shifted into d or r, or came to a complete stop. I was out of town and the car was parked for two weeks. My partner drove it yesterday (4/11/19), checked fluids, and observed the lurch. As he was arriving home, the car lurched to a stop and gave a "hybrid system warning! safely stop and do not drive! we dropped it at the dealership. I bought the car for $9k, sunk another $7k into the car, and am now expected to pay $5k more on a transmission that didn't have any issues before. Kia has already stated that repairs at their dealerships aren't being performed correctly. This is getting ridiculous. I had to vdeal with massive economic hardship over the six months i didn't have a car, and now its going to start all over again and i will be $20k in the hole on this car. This is not how good, safe vehicles are built.
Without warning the engine overheated while driving in the highway.the engine made a loud noise and began smoking ... The vehicle became immobilized i pulled off to the side of the road and opened the hood.there was so much smoke.the car turned on afterwards but the engine did not start.within seconds the battery shutdown.

Approaching a stop light, the automatic transmission started downshifting. As it went through each gear there was a short pause followed by a jerking car motion. Accelerating through the intersection, the engine started to rev like the clutch was out on the transmission. As i was on a busy state highway, this put me in danger of being hit. I managed to pull my car onto a side street, and the transmission continued to behave in this manner. There were no warning lights on the dash, or any sort of indication there was a problem with the car. I put the shifter into manual mode, and found that i could control the gear shifts well enough to get the car to the dealer. After 3 days at the dealer, they tried a reset to the relearn system and updates to the ecm/ecu as suggested by kia. The problem remained. Now they are talking about replacing the transmission, but kia cannot tell them when the transmissions will be available. The dealer has another car that has already been waiting for more than 3 weeks to have the transmission replaced. Failing transmissions are a serious safety issue, and when drivers have no warning that the system is failing it makes it even worse. The lack of available transmissions would indicate to me that they have a known problem that should be investigated.
While the vehicle was parked, the child seated in the rear seat in a high back booster seat became entangled in the seat belt. The contact mentioned that the seat belt failed to unlock. As a result, the contact had to use scissors to cut and release the child from the seat belt. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
I have had 2 issues:my uvo system has malfunctioned multiple times and my system is going to be replaced again today. I have had brake issues, my master cylinder was replaced and its going back in today for brakes. Now my car is pulling to the left! i have 25,000 miles on this car!
I was approaching a stop sign traveling 30 mph. When applying the brakes to slow down they were initially working and i was reducing speed, however suddenly i heard a very loud crunching/grinding noise and i lost all brake functionality. To stop the vehicle i had to place the vehicle in park. If a car was in front of me i would have crashed into it. Additionally, because i lost brake functionality i went into the intersection. If cars were crossing the intersection or if a person was crossing the street i would have crashed into them. I turned off the car and got out and checked the vehicle and was unable to find anything wrong. Since i was in the intersection i turned the vehicle back on and the brakes seemd to be working again. The vehicle was towed to the kia dealer. The kia dealer had the car for three days. Per the kia technician they inspected the brakes and the hybrid regenerative braking system and were unable to find any problems or recreate the issue. Per the kia technician they exhausted all of their options and were unable to find any issues and returned the car to me. Additionally, i contacted kia customer service and they stated that if they were unable to recreate the problem there is nothing they could do. While researching this issue i found that two other people have reported the same problem to the nhtsa (nhtsa id 10638311, 10650553). One person crashed because of the issue and they reported that the issues have sporadically happened multiple times. I believe that there is a defect in the hybrid braking system that causes the driver to sporadically lose all brake functionality. I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle and fear that at any point in time i can lose all brake functionality and crash, causing an injury or death to myself or another person.
Kia optima hybrid system warning no brakes!unsafe car! we have the same problem as someone else on this site. Oct 16th 2014 we were pulling out of our driveway and received a warning on the display saying "hybrid system warning slow down and come to a stop. Check brakes. Also the brake pedal had depressed all the way to the floor and there was a grinding sound. Unlike a low pad sound but the sound of gears not engaging. Also there were no brakes at all, the car wouldn't stop. We turned the car off and then on again and it was the same error message and same pedal situation. So we left the car where it was. After a few hours we tried to start the car again, but this time it was fine, no error message, brakes worked again. So we took it to our kia dealer ship here in honolulu. After a diagnostic we received a report a few hours later. The report said that the car checked out fine and there were no error codes stored. The service advisor said this is an intermittent problem that they could not duplicate. We took the car home and did nt feel safe driving it as we thought what if this happens again. We then brought the car back to kia and told them how we felt. They said they did multiple test and after one week of testing could not duplicate the problem. The service manager was very angry with us saying we need to pick up our car and return the loaner. After i hung up i did my own research on the internet and found this identical symptoms on another complaint here but this person had got into an accident. I forwarded this link to kia, now they are so nice to us because i think they now see the danger. But they still have our car and can't figure out what is wrong. We are very fearful that this car is dangerous and will not put our kids at risk in this kia with no brakes!be warned this car has brake problems and one person has already crashed!
On two separate occasions, i was driving with my children in the car and have lost brake functions to my car. The first time, i was on the freeway. In the morning with alot of traffic. I had to swerve into the emergency lane and grind the brakes trying to stop the car. There was a loud grinding and scrapping sound but car did not stop. I had to use emergency brake to stop the car. I turned off the car and restarted it and the brakes worked again. I was able to exit the freeway and slowly made it to my home. I then had the car towed to an auto shop near by. They ran a diagnostic and found code error 1237 in the active hydraulic boost system and was told that the car has an internal pressure leak in the abs system. The mechanic was not able to fix the issue due to not having the equipment to do so and i was sent to kia dealer. I towed the car to kia. I told them what the mechanic had said and i was told that kia needed to run its own diagnostic. After they did that they said it was the battery. I replaced the battery. 3 months later, the same thing happened. I was just about to enter the freeway when i lost the brakes and heard the grinding and scrapping sound. I pulled into a gas station right before the freeway and was able to stop the car using my emergency brake. I again turned off the car and turned it back on. I tried to drive it but it continued to happen. I could not drive it safely so i had it towed to kia. They did another diagnostic and told me that they had found a pressure sensor error and a leak in the abs system and now its going to cost 2600. They could not guarantee me that this would not happen again. I do not feel safe driving me and my family in the car.
When turning the steering wheel while driving or setting stillthere is a catch. Like it is stiff.
Inherently bad electronicpower steering coupler. Broken wile still relatively low milage. Makes a very bad clunking noise when steering and going over bumps and causes steering wheel to wobble.
When i move the steering wheel from side to side i can hear apopping noise when i am driving as well as when i am at a stop. The steering wheel has excessive vibration and raddling when i am driving between 65-75 on the highway, it decreases at 80 mph. I have gotten my tires checked as well as an alignment so it is not an issue with that.
The steering coupler on the optima shatters because it is made of plastic
I was driving in a residential neighborhood and a lady pulled in front of me. I slammed on my brakes and swerved to the right so i would avoid hitting her. The next thing i knew i smacked into a pole. For the past year i have been trying to figure out how and why i had so much damage to my car when i was only going 25 mph. I finally realized that this happened because i couldn't stop my car even when applying the brakes. The accident happened july 10, 2013 and one year later on the same day july 10, 2014 my brakes failed on my car while i was waiting for a gate to open. I heard a terrible crunching noise, a warning sign came on saying hybrid system warning safely stop and do not drive and the only way i could stop the car was to use the emergency brake. The same warning sign came on during the accident. I remember my car wouldn't stop and actually seemed like it gained a little speed. I hit the pole and the car still wouldn't stop so i had to use the emergency brake to stop it. I sat there in shock over what had just happened. I couldn't understand why i hit that pole and why there was so much damage to my car. Now i completely understand why this happened. It was due to my brakes not working that day. On july 10, 2014 when the brakes failed for the second time, i had my car towed to the kia dealership down the street and they kept it for 7 weeks and said they couldn't find anything wrong with the car so i picked it up. I could tell something was still wrong with it but they wouldn't listen to me. Not even 1k miles later the brakes went out for the 3rd time. This time kia picked up several error messages. They still have my car and its been 4 weeks. They said they need to replace the hydraulic power unit. This is what they told me 2 weeks ago and its still not done. This is not a safe car to drive and i do not feel comfortable driving it anymore!
Bought the car new in 2012 from fuccillo kia in cape coral, florida for my wife. She noticed the very slight "clunking" noise in 2014 with about 50k miles on it and didn't think it was much of a problem. It gradually became very, very loud and she could now feel the constant "clunking" when turning the steering wheel or hitting small imperfections in the road. She brought it to my attention at about 65k miles and after researching the noise on the internet i found this problem has been occurring in thousands of kia and hyundai vehicles from 2010 to 2014 model years.it is a quarter sized rubber star shaped bushing between two metal couplers that disintegrates over time and very quickly in warm climates like south florida.this repair is not a recall and is not covered after 60kwarranty.i purchased the "new & upgraded" part from a local kia dealer for less than $2but, the labor to install is close to $350!!!this should be a recall for the vehicles involved due to the unsafe steering characteristics and the volume of vehicles affected as it does not involve an owner serviceable routine maintenance component!!!
Since i bought this car, at highway speeds, the vehicle drifts left and right constantly and you have to use two hands on steering wheel justto keep the vehicle straight and from pulling left or right. Less noticeable in city driving but still drifts. Brought it twice to the dealer and tech drove it and told me alignment is within specs and it was fine i just need to get used to it. This is very unnerving and dangerous. Hope the lemon law will help me.

Some of this cars was on fireand we want to know if its safe

The engine shifts really hard and my car will shut down in the middle of the highway and today while driving several of my warning lights came on in the car and one advised me to stop the car and do not drive.
Purchased the car used at 25000 miles from a dealership. Car was fine, smooth for about 10 months. Did oil changes as usual. Noticed some jerking recently when i would come to a complete stop but didn't really bother me at first. Then i noticed it was having trouble accelerating from a complete stop. It would sometimes take 3+ seconds for it to respond and start moving. The more i would come to a complete stop (bumper to bumper traffic) it would take longer to respond to accelerate. Couple days ago, i did the maintenance 30k service. I thought it would solve the problem but it still did its thing. I had the "hybrid system warning! safely stop and do not drive" message happen twice..once after the maintenance. I took it back to kia and fortunately the guy did a test drive and replicated the issue with the lag. He also replicated the hybrid system warning message as well. I now have a loaner. Not sure how long it'll take but from the sounds of it from this forum, they dont know whats wrong. Hopefully i dont have to buy a new car =/anyone with questions, email me at [xxx]@sbcglobal.netvin unavailableinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'
The contact owns a 2012 kia optima hybrid. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated while in park and crashed into a garage door, without any warning. The contact reversed the vehicle and placed the vehicle in park. The contact mentioned when exiting the vehicle, it began to shake, jerk and attempted to accelerate. The vehicle was restarted however, the failure occurred on three occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000.
Car has always been taken to kia dealership for service but they claim they can not see the service records and will not cover under purchased warranty without them
While driving the vehicle on the highway upon acceleration the rpms spiked and there was a clicking noise.
