While operation of the lippert slideout in our '04 keystone 285efs fifth wheel, the slide stopped. Upon investigation (following wires, checking fuse, contacts, etc.) i found burnt out and melted wire nuts directly behind the fuse panel lying in sawdust. The wires are 10 gauge (30 amp). One stripped end was an inch in length while the other was less than 1/16". These wires provide full 12 volt amperage to operate the slideout. This way of stripping wires for wire nut attachment is not prudent for asafe electrical connection and is extremely dangerous. I would believe that keystone should use "barrel connectors" for this extreme amperage and not plastic wire-nuts with improperly stripped wires. There's members on the keystone rv camping group sight that have also experienced this type of "burn-out". This can and could have been deadly. The 30 amp breaker never tripped. I also took pictures.
The contact owns a 2004 keystone cougar fifth wheel equipped with a dometic refrigerator. The contact stated that the refrigerator caught fire. The fire extinguished independently. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. A technician diagnosed that the refrigerator needed to be replaced and serviced per nhtsa campaign numbers: 08v325000 (equipment) and 08e032000 (equipment). The vehicle was not repaired due to the manufacturer's refusal. The vin was unavailable.
I have a 2004 keystone travel trailer. The refrigerator has a recall from dometic. The recall is to prevent fires if the refrigerator leaks flammable coolant into the propane flame. My cooler has started to leak and is no longer safe to use. Dometic will not replace the faulty cooler. Their solution to the problem (leaking coolers) is to install a switch that turns the fridge off in case of a leak. It does not fix the real problem (the faulty cooler). They will not even allow me to have the kit put on until i purchase a new cooler. Please help me resolve this issue with dometic.i feel that dometic needs to replace the faulty part.thanks,[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Theelectric glide out mechanismwas located on the outside of the frame.this takes the clearance from the tires when the fifth wheel is turning.the tire rubbed against the mechanism and caused them to wear prematurely, which could result in a blow out.also, no chains can be put on tires because there is no space for them. Chains is needed and required by law for driving in bad whether. The glide out manufacturer removed the mechanismfrom the outside of the fifth-wheel and put it in on the inside, which corrected the problem. This problem is on all fifth-wheel and trailers. Consumer feels should be recalled becaused of tires on left side rubbing on slideout system placed on outside of frame.
Faulty shackles and 2 bent axles on 2004 keystone cougar fifth wheel caused tires excessive wear to core. One tire blew out. Less than 7000 long distance miles on camper. Weight was 2000 lbs under limit of 10,000 lbs. Keystone claims no recall and no responsibility, with no explanation as to why this would occur. Others like us are expressing safety concern over the internet.
I purchased a 2004 cougar 5th wheel made by keystone rv in april of 2005 from a local dealer.since then we have taken two long trips (over 500 miles) and each time have had multiple blow-outs (2 on the first trip and 3 this last trip).thus, i have had to replace all five tires that came with the unit with brand-new tires.all of the blow-outs have occurred on public highways doing 60mph and there was no warning nor could i feel that a tire had gone.fortunately either i noticed smoke in my side mirrors or a passerby has alerted me to the failed tire.i always ensure proper tire inflation before towing and carry an air compressor with me.thus, i don't see that i could have done anything different to prevent these tire failures.this is the third trailer that i've owned and the only one that has had these tire failures and been unsafe to tow.in fact, the last blow-out did some undercarriage and wiring harness damage as the tread wrapped around the axel.

Complaint received via e-mail. The trailer tire valve stems are weak at the base of the stem. The first valve went bad while the consumer was traveling down the road, luckily he found it before it went totally flat. The second valve stem went bad while the trailer was in the driveway. The third valve went bad in the driveway. The fourth valve went bad after the consumer checked the tire pressure and drove 50 miles down the road. The tire went completely flat and disintegrated tore up the fender on the trailer and some of the undercarriage. The trailer has about 6000 miles on it. I kept 2 of the valve stems. The cougar dealership told the consumer to call the tire manufacturer. Tread distributor 574-293-0581.i had the tire replaced at discount tire. They told the consumer that the valve stems were weak and replaced them with steal stems.
