Red airbag warning light in gauge cluster comes on intermittently.started when vehicle was approx 2 years old. Clock spring was replaced under warranty.now out of warranty, airbag warning light is on intermittently again.

Instrument cluster panel inoperable causing odometer, fuel gauge, speedometer, oil gauge, water temperature, etc to be inoperable, dealer replaced dealer replaced air bag control module.

Driver's airbag and horn fail to operate due to defective clockspring assembly.chrysler recalled this clockspring for several make/models but didn't include the 1999 jeep wrangler tj.see recall #04v480000.

The air bag module has been malfunctioning while driving at freeway speeds causing the instrument cluster to read erratically, speed is not shown, the correct amount of fuel is not shown and the tachometer has shown 42k since the problem first arose.nlm

Airbag control module fails. Causes gauges in dashboard not to work properly. Gauges will not read oil pressure, speed, etc. Airbag light comes on.

Intermittent electrical connection at passenger airbag override switch sometimes causes red service airbag light to illuminate on instrument cluster.hitting the center console near the override switch causes the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster to go out.this is not to be confused with the light next to the override switch that says "off".this light functions normally.

I was driving an old washed out and bumpy mountain road. Due to the bumps, i could not go much faster than 15mph. The road/ground was wet and slippery so i was in 4hi. After going down the road for about 30 minutes and going around a turn, the airbag light came on. As i turned the wheel in the opposite direction, to go around a large downed tree, it momentarily shut off, then returned to on. I immediately turned the jeep off and checked the airbag fuses. Both are good. Puzzled and rather nervous that the airbag might go off in my face, i turned around to go back to the main road. After nervously driving a few miles down the road, i returned the jeep to the speed limit and attempted to engage my cruise control but, the light wouldn't turn on. I tried all the cruise control buttons to no avail. Pulled over and checked the fusebox again for the cruise control fuse but, i couldn't find one anywhere. After driving another 100 miles home, i let my sister's fiance, who's a mechanic, check it with his scan tool. According to his scan tool, the clockspring has malfunctioned. After doing a few google searches, it's apparent that the cost to have this fixed is very high. The part itself is over $200 and needs to be replaced by a mechanic! labor is going to be at least another $200 based on how much time it will take and the fact that it will more than likely have to be done at a dealership. Shouldn't this be a lifetime part? why should i have to pay to have this fixed if it's a major safety issue? any response would be greatly appreciated as i don't have the money to have this fixed and i'm rather nervous to drive it now. What are the odds of the airbag going off?[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Consumer states while traveling at25 mph, under snowy conditions, consumer lost control of vehicle, side swiped another vehicle before coming to a stop.upon impact, none of theair bags deployed.

While traveling 65 mph air bag light came one.for some reason that affected6gauges onconsole dropping the readings to zero.this occurred seven times with cause unknown.please describe details.

While driving at any speed air bag light and check engine light appeared on the dashboard .this caused the speedometer to fail.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it home.consumer will contact the dealer in the near future.*la

Hit wall head on no airbag deployed. No explination by service center

If interior of vehicle becomes damp - either through rain with top inadvertantly left down, or by cleaning as indicated (with hose) in owner's video tape and information - the clock spring shorts out causing 1) air bag system failure 2) horn to go off constantly 3) intermittent drivability concerns. Dealership continually replaces rusty clock spring - however has no resolution for situation cause by normal use as indicated in owner's information (and all other previously owned jeep wranglers).

1999 jeep wrangler had multiple rear differential failures before 70k miles. *** no answer required***the original drive train was rebuilt using original mopar parts.the drive train failed for the second time at 69000 mile after only 11000 miles of use.this time the dealer refuses to provide any financial assistance.the vehicle had other failures which include water leaks, drive train seals failure, electrical failures, multiple abs failures, air bag and seat belt problems, and the paint was peeling off the vehicle.

Tsb no. 08-15-99 intermittent air bag warning and cluster operationcreates a hazardous driving condition .

My 1999 jeep lost all gauges and the air bag light came on. I found out that jeep has a tsb#08-15-99 since may 21 1999 because of a faulty connector.since this is a safety problem i believe they should pay for the repair. Thank you.

Was driving 50mph & the driver fell asleep at the wheel andvehicle hit a telephone pole. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy. Driver was wearing seat belts at the time. Suffered some bruises & sprains.

Consumer was involved in a 50 mph frontal collision in whichdriver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy, cause unknown.

As per serveral service bulletins already submitted, my 1999 jeep wrangler was purchased early in 2000 with 30,000 miles on it.several months later the airbag light comes on and all other gauges stop working.the dealership already did a repair on the part and it worked okay for about 6 months and since then, 20,000 + miles later it continues to do the same thing again.i am no longer under warranty and have not yet contacted the dealership again to let them know that the repair did not correct the failure.it still occurs erratically, but almost on a daily basis over 1 year after the repair was done.

Consumer stated the vehicle air bag light came on. Dealer notified.*ph

Consumer stated the vehicle horn didn't work and the clockspring failed. Dealer notified. *ph

At any speed my red air bag light comes on and knocks out the whole instrument panel.this is the 3rd time this has happened.previous two times the jeep wrangler 1999 was taken to dealer and apparently 'fixed.'

My jeep lost all power to the console/dash during night driving and i could not measure my speed, rpms, fuel or any other gauges.this included both the analog (needle) and digital (led) gauges.my 5-speed drove fine though, no sweat.so there i was, driving down the road, and i had no way to ascertain my velocity.there was no way to tell if i was going 20 mph or 120 mph.it was just me, my jeep and my gut instincts.so, i pulled a fonzie and smacked the dash, and gave it my best "heyyyyyyyy"and you guessed it - after that all was well.the lights came back and i was doing a cool 60.because i can't drive 55.after a little internet wizardry on my favorite search engine, apparently this is simply a loose connection from the dash ground.being a jeep owner, i simply replaced the faulty screw and didn't waste my time taking it to a dealer or whining about it online.oh wait...i'm actually only reporting this problem because i wanted to validate the nhtsa complaint process.looks like it is working.hey v!

Consumer complained aboutelectrical problems, which included misreading on the speedometer and gauges on the dashboard. This vehicle was serviced 7 times for this problem. However, there was no remedy and the problem recurred. Consumertried to contact the manufacturer but was unable to talk to anyone other than custom representativewho answered the phone.

While driving, the insured was informed that his headlights were on and that the vehicle was smoking, the vehicle was taken to the dealership and consumer was informed that there was a short in the dimmer switch, and the a/c control head. Claim#04-1236-643

Since i have owned my 99 wrangler, about every two years. The fan motor or selector switches have burned out. The last time it happened it meted down the wiring harness as well. It is my feeling that this is a serious problem that jeep is aware of. Since they have a special bulletin that allows you to buy the switches individually, instead of the entire heating cooling head unit.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. While driving approximately 50 mph over a bump in the road, the blower motor failed to function. The instrument panel warning indicators illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Ever since i purchased the jeep, it has been a reliable vehicle.the other day, i went to start it and the instrument cluster was unresponsive and the airbag light was on.i tried replacing the fuse and found it to be good, receiving power.i started to check websites for similar problems and found a recall for the exact problem i was having.this recall described exactly what was happening to my jeep.the recall is found here recall 99v117000: instrument panel ground screws loosethe left side and right side instrument panel wiring ground attachment screws could loosen over time. If the left side screw loosens, the instrument panel gauges may not function when the headlamps are turned on. If the right side screw loosens, the defroster blower motor may not function.well, i took a copy of the recall to my local jeep dealership, bluebonnet jeep in new braunfels, texas.as soon as i walked through the door, i started telling them about the problem with the jeep and how similar it was to the recall.i showed them a copy of the recall and continued telling them how it was behaving.the dealer asked me if i purchased the jeep from them and i told them no.they were very concerned about me not buying the jeep from them, they went out and copied the vin number down.the attendant stated they could not help me because it was not showing up as being a recall issue.i told them it was giving me all the same problems as this recall and they said they did not care, if the number does not show up on their computer, they will not help.i believe the original recall effects more models of jeep than originally stated and respectfully request this to be investigated.thanks.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. While driving over a bump at 35 mph, the instrument cluster failed to function. The contact had to hit the console before the cluster illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired.the failure recurred on numerous occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.

1999 jeep wrangler with ground wire problems **answered by ric willard**ccthe recall was 99v117000.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall.after the repairs the problem persisted.the consumer reached behind the cluster and when he pushed on one of the plugs they moved about an eighth of an inch.the consumer then heard the latched snap into position and he hasn't had a problem since.the heater also had a problem that the consumer thought would be corrected by recall but was not.the system changes the location of the air flow on it's own.

Car has 30,000 miles, has not been "off road" or misused. Problem(s) started at about 27,000.. Intermittentlywhile driving, instrument panel and radio lose power. If motor is stopped and restarted, power comes on again. 2. Intermittently, headlights go out when signaling for a right or left turn, then turn on again when turn signal is off.3. Air conditioner intermittently failed to cool associated with an electrical smell before finally failing to cool altogether.4. Check engine light and airbag light intermittently go on and off.no consequences to date other than the stress of having an undependable and hot vehicle in miami. Mechanics unable to find the problem with the instrument panel.i am told that i need a new air conditioner but cannot afford to replace it at this time.

The dash gauges worked intermittently. When the dash lights were off the airbag light illuminated. When the dash light were on the airbag light went off.the consumer was concerned the airbag may not work properly. The consumer statedthe dash gauges worked off and on. Ph

A while ago i had the climate controls go out in my 1999 jeep wrangler. Upon investigation, i found that the wiring harness connector and the climate controls had melted due to the heat generated from the electrical connection.i replaced the climate controls in my jeep, however, the electrical wiring still gets very hot. Idid some checking in jeep forums and apparently, this is a common occurrence in the "tj" jeep model.i am enclosing a link to an article that addresses this issue, in it the authors determined that the uncorrected wiring can reach 122 degrees.http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/electrical/154_0710_jeep_fire_prevention/index.html.

Intermittently the gauges on the dash go to zero.the air bag light comes on.the odometer does not work.the vehicle has not been serviced, however the manufacturer sent the consumer a body control module. The consumer stated that her previous vehicle of the same make an model had the same problem.*tc

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. While traveling 50 mph, the contact noticed when driving over a bump, all warning lights would appear on the instrument panel. The current and failure mileages were approximately 128,000.updated 12/30/10. *ljthe consumer also stated the air bag light illuminated. Updated 01/04/11.

My 1999 jeep wrangler is doing exactly what the recall says, but for some reason my vin is not in the recall system as per the jeep dealer! please help... This is not fair that the recall is not on my jeep when it's doing exactly what the recall says! thanks.

1st issue: the dash gauges will go off and on intermittently. I have fought with this problem for years now. The dealer of course doesn't know what i'm talking about. Never heard of it. I have completely removed the dash looking for problems. Bad grounds? i can't tell where. I suspect the plugs the cluster slips into. I've tried to pull the mounts closer for a better connection. It seamed to work for a while. Then it comes back. A good sound beating on the dash brings them back on. Amazing what that plastic will take. All this started after the warranty expired. I refuse to take it in and pour money at it till they figure it out. All i want is to know how to fix the gauges. I'm about ready to cut the wires and solder them directly on. 2nd issue: i began smelling plastic burning or something. Later the heater fan quit working. After some reading of the service manual, i checked a lot of parts and found the control/selector switch unit heated up and partially melted the wiring harnessas well as burnt inside the unit. Bought another and replaced it. Works great now. All the fan positions work again.this switch has to be replaced so often i just leave the screws from the center dash panel off.every 99 jeep wrangler owner i know has the exact same problems. Does someone have to die before there is a fix/recall?nothing like driving down the road and smell an electrical fire when you are 100 miles from anyone.

The dash gauges fail (1999 jeep tj) to operate as they should including the speedodometer and tach. Chyrsler, in its first tsb concerning the issue says the repair was carried out by drilling new pilot holes for ground screws. However the problem continues and in a subsequent tsb they say the problem is now caused by rust inside the instrument cluster connector. However i have not followed thru on the issue because of the cost involved in making the repair.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler.the odometer fails intermittently when the headlights are illuminated.the dealer stated that the repair would cost $105 to correct the instrumental panel failure.the vin is not included in nhtsa campaign id number 99v117000 (other) and the vehicle is out of warranty.the manufacturer was unable to assist.the current mileage was 114,205 and failure mileage was 114,105.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's instrument panel gauges dimmed completely after illuminating intermittently.the defroster blower stopped functioning as well.there was a nhtsa recall, # 99v117000, regarding the other (screws).the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.

All gauges stop reading and drop to zero and the airbag warning light comes on. Happens frequently when going downhill at speed or hitting a bump.

Engine misfires while shifting up through the gears. I feels like plugs breaking down or poor fuel mixture, when at an idle there is poping from the tail pipe. I have had it back to the dealer two times they said that they could not find the same condition. It was there when i recived the jeep new and it is still there. I called chrysler and theycalled the dealer and recived the same report so nothing has been done yet. I need help to get this problem fixed. Thank you

The check engine light keeps coming on.i have returned it for service 4 times, and need to bring it back in again.first they said it was a solenoid. Then they traced all of the wiring.the time after that they replaced the module.next they replaced all of the spark plugs (recall service).they replaced the spark plugs 2-3 weeks ago, and the check engine light is already back on.the dealership's service has been good, but they nor chrysler seem to know why this is occurring.

1999 jeep wrangler sahara with air conditioning - hvac electrical issue:smelled burning/melting plastic, then hvac controls quit working.i disassembled the dash to find the electrical connector on passenger side of hvac controls had melted.looks like it could lead to short-circuits or fire.

Normal use of fan speed control switch of 1999 jeep wrangler. The male tabs on back of switch break causing shorts and failure.replaced under warranty twice.the second time was in new york on vacation and the short caused a dash fire in which the wiring harness had to be replaced.luckily nobody was hurt due to close proximaty of dealership.replaced a third time myself due to rejection by dealer and chrysler to cover cost.there has been at least three and maybe four switches since purchasing this vehicle new.this issue has been ongoing almost immediately after purchase.chrysler dealerships in wilmington, nc and geneva, ny where fire occured kept old parts.all parts replaced brand new and still continue to fail.my fear is the switch will continue to fail and cause further fires and possibly loss of vehicle or personal injury.with the trouble i am having, i find it hard to believe there is not a more wide spread issue.

Apparently jeep wranglers are known for this problem, yet there has never been a recall.for several months now my dash cluster has been malfunctioning.the rpm guage and speedometer both drop to zero, the airbag and check engine lights come on, and the digital odometer loses its readout and instead says "no bus".it happens sporadically, not continuously.i took it to an independent auto shop which was able to correct the problem, but it began again after a couple months.i just took it to my local jeep dealer for this problem, as well as other electrical problems.(my jeep wouldn't start for the last 3 days.)they found a wire that was corroded and replaced or repaired it.my jeep runs again, but on the way home from the dealership the dash cluster went haywire again.everyone i have spoken to in the auto shops is aware that this is a common problem with jeeps, including my jeep dealer, but nobody has taken steps to remedy this problem.to date, i have spent nearly $1,300.00 to fix the dash cluster and other electrical problems (probably all related) and my car only has 43,000 miles on it.conveniently, my manufacturer's warranty expired at 36,000 miles.this began at around 38,000 miles. *nlm

Radiator made with plastic which leaks at the top where the plastic is crimped to the metal core.this is an inevitable problem on all jeep (chrysler products) made with radiators manufactured using plastic causing leakage before the life expectancy of the radiator is reached.in some cases, coolant is flammable.to my knowledge no recall has been performed.

52,000 on my 1999 wrangler (have never been "off roading in it).i just replaced the radiator with an after market brand - not jeeps radiator.i'm in the process of ordering a new exhaust manifold (mine is cracked).once again i was advised to buy an after market manifold because the jeep's manifold is a lesser quality.it has been explained to me that both of these repairs are frequent on this model and should be a factory recall.

Sudden acceleration occurred while idling in traffic while the brakes were being applied. This caused the vehicle to run in back of a truck. No injuries reported.dealer was notified. The consumer stated that the dealer downloaded software to power traincomputer from the 1998 service bulletin.the bulletin stated that when the temperaturerose to 103 celsius it could cause high rpm in parking lot maneuvers or stop and go traffic. The consumer stated that this should have been done to all 99 models.the consumer sold the vehicle. *tc *sc

Heard loud noises coming from the engine.check engine light came on.the manifold was cracked in two places.the area dealers happen to have the newly designed manifold in stock due to the problems with the manifold cracking.have spoken with several people and the same problem occurred with them.this should definitely be recalled.the new manifold has springs built in to make room for give -- the old one did not, therefore causing them to crack.it is very unsafe and costs a lot to get it fixed.

There is a hesitation in the engine whenever it reaches 2000rpm, under a load.i have had the power steering pump switch wiring harness replaced, and i have had the throttle body cleaned.the hesitation has not gone away.the dealer states that no "codes" come up on the diagnostic machine they use, so they don't know what's wrong.i am bringing it in this week for the third time.

Exhaust manifold failure.

Exhaust manifold cracked in several places with only 56k on jeep. Dealer says there was no special warranty for this part, but was plenty aware of the high incidence of failure with this part. Independent mechanics shop that repaired my jeep said that his friends shop has repaired several hundred of the same vehicle as mine, just in the orlando floridaarea. This part should be recalled, dangerous fumes from this obviously defective part could leak into cabin of jeep, possibly knocking out the driver.

I have a 1999 jeep wrangler.the exhaust manifold cracked.at first i thought it was just mine but after some discussion with others i found this is common.did not have it fixed immediately because at first it was not bad.i only discovered it after it became very loud.hot exhaust blows on other engine components

I have had the exhaust manifold fail in my 99 tj twice now.the factory original cracked at about 39,000 miles and the "new and improved" oem replacement lasted 11 months (or 9,450 miles).this is getting very expensive...

On february 4, 2004 i took my 1999 jeep wrangler to bob mayberry chrysler dodge, jeep, inc. It was very noisy and more gasoline than usual.they said that my exhaust manifold was broken and that this was a very common problem in these vehicles.mileage at that time was 61,935.the warranty for that year was only 3 years 36 months i was told.this repair was nearly $700.00 and is somethng that i have never had go wrong on any other car i ever had.this was something that the company has known about for some time now, and refused to recall the poorly designed and poorly constructed exhaust manifolds. I would like to see you force them to fix these problems and return all or part of my service bill. My vin is 1j4fy9s7xp414936.when i called the daimler chrysler customer service number, i was told that this was just too bad, but there was nothing that they were going to do about it.

I would like to know if their is a secret warrenty on the exhaust manifolds cracking on the seams of the joint, for the jeep wrangler's.dt

Manifold cracking on 1999 jeep wrangler, causing rough running condition and fumes inside cabin.

Consumer noticed the engine was making more noise than normal, consumer investigated and found that the exhaust manifold was cracked in four locations, the dealer stated that it was out of warantee.

The exhaust manifold has cracked in two different spots. At 69000 miles i had a major service (paid $450 for it) done on my vehicle, there was a loud sound coming from my vehicle. The dealership did not say anything. I trusted them no bringing it up.at 73000 miles i took it in for an oil change, asked about the sound. They said it was a cracked manifold. I had to call jeep to find out if it was covered under a warranty, the warranty ended at 70000 miles. I took the vehicle to several different places for estimates and informtion. None said that the cracks, two at two different spots, could have been done in 4000 miles. One is located on a tight bend on the pipe. I asked the manager of the dealership what could cause this problem, he said that tempeture changes. The dealership also never told me that it was two cracks. Just said there was one. They also said they did not detect it the first time because maybe it was not as abvious. The locations of one of the cracks can easily be seen if one changes the oil, the other can be seen by ligting the hood and looking down the side of the engine. This leads me to belief that the dealership did not complete a major check of the vehicle at the time of the major service. And the service manager telling me that temperature changes are the cause as well as the location of these cracks, leads me to believe that the part could easily be a defected one.i've done all major and minor services recomended by the vehicles manual. The dealership has offered a discount for the labor, but i can't believe that a part that was made to handle so much heat would crak because of tempeture changes or in two spots in 3000 miles. I would appreciate your input and efforts on this matter. Thank you for your time, lesther nunez.

I have a 1999 jeep wrangler which was manufactured in oct of 1998.my oem exhaust manifold had two cracks in it as of december of 2003, with the milage on the vehicle being roughly 42000.i replaced the manifold with an aftermarket manifold purchased from o'reilly auto parts in springfield, mo.eleven months later, the aftermarket manifold cracked also.there is too much heat and pressure in the 4.0 engine for the manifolds to be able to handle, causing failure.jeep dealerships replace hundreds daily, and are well aware of the engine problem, but also that the stock manifolds are made out of weak materials.any muffler shop or tech will agree with this, as did 8 jeep engineers at camp jeep.i am currently going on my 3rd, and plan on changing to either a borla or banks header to try to solve the problem.headman hedders has discontinued making a replacement for the jeeps because they aren't able to solve the problem, and borla agrees, but continues to warranty exchange those that come back cracked.the exhaust leaks penetrate the cab and can cause headaches and drowsiness after long periods of exposure.gas milage is greatly reduced by this issue.i am looking for reimbursement of my aftermarket header if jeep is unable to correct the issue or recall the manifolds.

1999 jeep wrangler 6 cycl. Has been to the dealership on multiple visits.loss of power during highway driving.after replacing the fuel pump, radiator, and performing an additional tune-up but problem is still unresolved.now find that there is a crack in the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold has completely cracked.

Experianced headaches, nausea, as well as audible knocking from under hood.my 1999 4.0 liter 6 cylinder was found to have broken exhaust manifold, leaking hot gasses and exhaust into engine compartment and passenger compartment.dealership aware that there is problem with manifold, as have redesigned it and replacement cost in excess of $500.00 contacted chrysler and filed complaint, told they area aware of problem, but will not stand behind it or issue recall.local exhaust shop advised they do several per month with this defective exhaust manifold, both wrangler and cherokee between 1996 and 2000 model year.exhaust was revised in 2000 because of problems, but chrysler will not stand behind product denying the problem is a defect.chyrsler should warranty this problem as they did with the 2.5 liter.milage at time was only 39,000 when cracked.

Exhaust manifold fails to produce accurate pressure due to cracks in manifold or bolts.many jeep owners are suffering from faulty exhaust manifold/ please review jeep forums for research and proof that this is a very common problem that the auto manufactuer seems to be hiding from.thsi should be a recall.lets not wait for a fire or a death caused by this issue.

While driving vehicle was making a noise due to a cracked exhaust manifold. Dealer was contacted. Please add vin .

I have replaced the exhuast manifold twice because it has cracked above the y connector at the pipe.now i will go with a borlla exhuast unit to see if this manufacturer defect can be corrected. Which i believe to be a defect in the motor mounts that are too week and allows the motor to lift too far and stress the pipe.

Consumer experienced headaches and dizziness for months due to an exhaust leak.*phthe problem was discovered to be a cracked manifold. The consumer requested assistance, but was told only the 4 cylinder was being covered under warranty.

Exhaust manifold cracked in two places.poor design due to the inability to expand and contract due to thermal expansion (in an exhaust manifold!!!).exhaust fumes entering cabin while driving.

Every manifold in jeep wranglers are faulty and crack leaving the cabins of wranglers filling with carbon monoxide. This is a well known issues with jeep wranglers where the manifold is made with iron that does not expand and the welsing is sub par allowing for cracks which leak carbon monoxide.

Many jeep wranglers built before 2001 have a defective manifold that cracks, causing exhaust problems.this is the reason jeep completely redesigned the manifold in the newer models.they have yet to send out a recall to fix this problem.when i first noticed the loud noise resulting from the cracked manifold, my car had approximately 37,000 miles on it.not high mileage by any means.the main concern i have with this problem is the health hazard it poses to the driver.the section of the wrangler where the cracked manifold is located is underneath the front of the car, where exhaust fumes leaking from it seep up into the cabin very easily, especially when stopped at lights or in heavy traffic.i believe the manufacturers of jeep are very aware of this problem but don't care to do anything about it.*nlm

I took my jeep to chuck nash jeep because of a popping sound.they said the exhaust mainfold was cracked, and told me it would be $750.00 to replace, i refused the repair, they charged me $75.00 for the evaluation.

I was forced to get a new exhaust manifold for my jeep at 76,000 miles.the dealer's price was $1,300 for the repair.i've seen all over the internet and on the nhtsa's site that this is a common problem.i've been told by mechanics that the jeep's manifold is a lesser quality. I lodged a complaint with customer service who called the dealership and, after talking with the service tech, said that he couldn't do anything because it wasn't a "defect" but rather "normal wear and tear."i' can't believe this is true after seeing this common problem!!!chrysler --why is this not a factory recall?

I love my 1999 jeep wrangler and have been very happy till now.my husband and i have owned many new cars over the years and this is the first time either one have heard of an exhaust manifold going bad. When having the manifold replaced we were told it has been redesigned and is different than the one replaced. It had cracked in several places, mainly at the welds. I fill since i never take it off road that this shouldnot of happen. Not to mention it was very costly. I fill since this is a manufacturer problem i should be reversed for something like this.

Found crack in exhaust manifold between the #1 and #2 ports at around 68,000 miles, after discussing this problem with a number of other jeep owners i learned this is a common problem with the 1999 and other years back. My complaint is, if daimler chrysler is aware of this problem and i am sure they are, why aren't they addressing it. Unhappy with dealer and stock manifold, replacedwith after market exhaust manifold header.

There is a crack in my exhaust manifold in my 1999 jeep wrangler.when i looked into the problem, i have found many people with the same complaint.i also learned from a diamler-chrylser dealer that they replace over 250 of these a day.and in 2000, they changed the part.this makes me think they realized it was defective and did nothing to the victims that had the defective part.*la

Leak from the exaust manifold because of defect

A popping noise from the exhaust manifoldwas heard whenconsumer removedfoot fromgas pedal. During astate inspection the state inspector noticed a leak in the exhaust manifold.consumer took vehicle to a dealership, who indicated this was a common problem with vehicleswith a 4.0 liter engine.

I have read about several people having the same problem with their manifolds cracking several times on jeep wranglers.i think they need to be recalled and replaced with the new manifolds that jeep installed on the 2000 model.

Cracked manifold.

Engine manifold had two cracks; one was located on weld. Vehicle taken to dealer shop for repairs. Informed of no recall and it was out of warranty.the consumer stated that the failure in his opinion was either caused by a design failure or a metal failure of the weld.

Heard excessive noise coming from engine.investigation revealed that the exhaust header was cracked at the exhaust flange connecting the crossover pipe to the manifold.

1)the vehicle failed the annual inspection - and i was advised the reason was "exhaust manifold".2)i called the dealer - who thought my vehicle was a "2.5" which already has a recall on the exhaust manifold, but i have a "4.0" which currently does not.i asked what harm is being done if i do not get it fixed - and was advised that since there is a hole in the exhaust manifold, exhaust fumes are filling the cab (like the 2.5).i was at that time advised that there is no recall on this part.as it was explained to me, the part on the 2.5 is a bolt that attaches to the motor, and when it breaks, leaks exhaust into the cab; and on the 4.0 (which i believe is also a common problem), that there is a break in the base of the "y" pipe, which also leaks exhaust into the cab.i called the manufacturer customer line 800.992.1997, i advised that i was aware that this was a serious problem, and that there is already a recall on a similar model; i was told that all they could do was "register the complaint".i asked "how does one go about a recall process" and was told it was involved and complicated, and i was directed to this site after pressing for satisfaction.i then asked "how many people have to die before you recall this part?", and the rep on the other end of the line giggled.i went on to ask that if there was a recall on this part would i be reimbursed for my expenditure, and i was advised that "yes", i would be reimbursed for having to pay for this repair.3)because it is a dangerous condition, i am having the exhaust manifold replaced. I can make it available for inspection.

Dear sir or madam:recently the air conditioning my 1999 jeep wrangler sport stopped working and there was an immediate smell of smoke coming from within the dash board.upon partially disassembling the dash board's center console and removing the air conditioning controls it was apparent that a small fire or overheated wiring connector had melted the fan speed control switch and the air output selector switch.i purchased a used air conditioning control unit and wiring harness from a auto parts supplier, but prior to installing it i noticed that the same switches / connectors appeared to be melted as well.

I go to fill my 99 jeep wrangler and gas keeps splashing out at be and the pump keeps shutting off at the same time no matter how slow i pump gas it comes spilling.

When filling fuel tank gas overflows from fill point before pump shuts off. This causes fuel to spray or spill onto the ground or nearby objects. This only does this when fill the tank full.

I have a 1999 jeep wrangler sahara v.6.5 speed manual transmission. My jeep is in great shape however i started having steering problems.i noticed around the apex onboth sides the frame had rusted away.i had it a new piece welded in place and it was working great.then i noticed my transmission was having issues.i thought i was going to have to buy another transmission when it was discovered the plate that lies below the transmission was rusted from the frame and not supporting the transmission.i had that welded too. I looked the other day and noticed a hole between the size of a baseball and golf ball.i took it again to my welder and he said the whole bottom of my frame is rusted away. I was told by my body shop that because of jeeps design water was able to get and not out causing it to rust.the body of my jeep is in great condition as well as my motor and transmission.is there anything being done about this issue. If no once catches it i could have lost my front wheels and or transmission. I think its dangerous.i'm looking at $3000.00 to replace my frame.

Driving my 1999 jeep wrangler sport 4.0 l6 5-speed manual at appx. 65 mph a slight vibration came from the gas pedal. I pulled over, after crawling under the vehicle i found the front drive shaft loose at the joint connecting to my stock np231j transfer case. Figuring it was just a worn u-joint i continued on my way at a much slower speed appx. 35 mph for about 300 yards there was a loud pop along with metal and dirt flying from under the jeep which made me pull over once again this time out of control and ending up in the ditch. Where i found the np231j shattered in 5 pieces, many more were thrown onto the road way.

On 2 occasions, the vehicle jumped out of gear and rolled backwards and hit a gas pump and a vehicle.

The automatic transimission has been a problem since the car was bought brand new in november of 1999.first is the experience of, on occasion the car not starting while in park. The first time it happened i called chrysler road side assistance, and they informed me just to put it in nuetral whenever that happened and it would start ok. I have had to do that very often. I assumed it was not a big deal. I have never been able to engage the lo 4 wheel drive mechanism, but have not had the need for it, hence never bothered to complain about it. This year the transmission has disengaged at various speeds between each gear. It is a consistent problem, and have taken car to mechanic, had lines checked, transmission fluid changes, etc., but still hasn't resolved the problem. I am afraid that in a crisis situation, i will hit the gas, and the car will fail to accelerate, or will lunge as a result of the engine reving so hi before the transmission re-engages. This is a serious problem. The car has all highway miles and has never been in an accident. I am scared to drive this car because it might result in an injury. *nlm

In the evening, june 13th, 2001, my vehicle was parallel parked on a side street in boston, my partner shifted the automatic transmission into reverse, backed up approximately 2 feet, i was on the sidewalk guiding him back so as to not hit the car behind us.with his foot firmly on the brake, he shifted into drive, suddenly the engine revved high, and the vehicle lunged forward, striking a toyota rav4 parked in front.my bumper guard hit their bumper hard and my grill lightly hit their rear mounted spare tire, but there was really no damage.within a couple of seconds the engine idle returned to normal. Once the vehicle was out of the parking space, you could see tire skid marks approx. 3 feet long from the front tires, and the heavy smell of "burnt" rubber.after reading about the grand cherokee problem today, 08-03-01, it made me realize that if a person were standing between the vehicles on the day of my incident, they would have been crushed badly.i brought it to the dealer the following week , they said "they could not duplicate the problem and couldn't detect anything wrong."the problem has not re-occured, but shortly after they needed to replace the wiring harness for the guages since they would all go off while i was driving, and the odometer indicated "no bus" i suspect the two are unrelated, but i'm not an expert.the dealer knew exactly what was wrong with the guages, but never had another report of the engine revving out of control as mine did.thanks for your time.regards, al fowler.

After the fact, i remedied the situation by affixing a one and a half inch block of aluminum to the brake pedal.

While drivingpower steering shaft came off and pushed forward into the radiator fan.driver pulled over, and put it back in place. Could have caused loss of steering.

Water was leaking into the front passenger compartment of my 1999 wrangler sahara.chrysler said this was a known problem in the jeep wranglers but is unwilling to conscider this worth looking to repair.

Jeep is a 5 speed transmission.couldn't shift correctly, heard a rattle. Engine had fallen due to rusting frame. Frame so rusted, engine fell.only 90,000 miles on vehicle.not driven daily.was in motion.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. The contactstated that the instrumental panel and gauge failed to illuminate due to the loose screws that are located on the bottom of the instrument structure. The contact was unable to read the gauge on the instrument panel and the electrical blower motor failed. The manufacturer stated the vehicle was not included innhtsa campaign number 99v117000 (unknown or other). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was30,000 and the current mileage was 191,000.

I started hearing a banging/clanging noise under the rear of this vehicle upon starting/stopping or reversing.the noise is best described as a sharp metallic clang.undercar inspection revealed the frame has corroded to the point the upper control arm mounts have pulled away from the frame and the track bar that locates the axle side-to-side has separated from the rear axle housing along with the upper control arm mount separating from the axle housing.repair of this vehicle requires replacement of the frame along with replacement of the complete rear suspension and axle housing.this same vehicle was reported to you 03 november 2016 for the same issue involving the center section of the frame rusting through causing the transfer case mount/skid plate to drop.safety caps were installed on the frame at this time and the vehicle was placed back into service.

Recall 99v117000 concerning instrument panel screws.all the instrument gauges are failing to operate. Vehiclehad been to dealer for inspection. Dealer informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under the recall.

My 99' jeep has leaked water under the seats from the day i bought the car.i had 4 repair attempts where they replaced the door seals x 2, sanded the door frame, resealed the windshield, sealed the seams under the wheels and replaced the carpet 3 times.the car still leaked. I have sent a letter of defect to the manufacture and after the 5 and finial repair attempt the jeep still leaked water under the seats.chrysler even had an engineer fly down to the service shop and look at the jeep.he told me the leak was fixed.yesterday it rained and after driving through some puddles water still leaked under the seats.

The floor leaked from the time of purchase, the carpet was ruined, the dealership has replaced the carpet and "fixed" the leak twice, i still do not know if it has been properly repaired as for it has not rained since the last repair was completed. The dealership also confirmed that they have seen several jeeps with the same problem returned for repair. If the dealership is aware of this problem then why has there not been a recall issued by chrysler ???

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. While changing the rear driver side tire, it was discovered that the spare tire hub was extremely corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in any open recalls. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 25,001.

Jeep wrangler (tj body)1999 frame rusti was driving the vehicle at interstate (68-72mph) speeds when a severe vibration started suddenly and the manual transmission shift lever dropped to a lower than normal position.i pulled off in a safe area and inspected first for a flat tire and then looked under the vehicle.i noted the right frame rail had rusted through from the inside and the transmission-transfer case mount/skid plate ass'y had separated from the right (passenger side frame rail and dropped approx. 2-3 inches.this caused severe driveline vibration and erratic vehicle control.

Frame rotted from rust where the rear suspension attaches to the frame.too much rust to repair.remaining vehicle is in good shape considering only 107k miles.suspension broke free from the frame during normal road operation.i am told that the problem is epidemic with jeep tj frames.apparently so because there is noting available on the used parts market.lots of tj bodies and parts available but no frames to go along with them.

Head of the bolts which hold the hinges has broken off, causing door to disconnect fromvehicle. Dealer andmanufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

During rain and traveling at normal speeds, vehicle starts to tak in water through body welds from floor board and bolts for passenger seat/firewall leak was repaired by dealer, but body continues to leak uncontrollably/new vehicle have same problem.review jep forums for proof.

It seem like all of the exterior components painted black are now chipping.mainly on the passenger side mirror and on the brackets which hold the window in the hard top.

A body seal on the passenger side allows water to enter the passenger side compartment (front and rear) causing inches of water to accumulate ruining the interior carpet.nlm

Tl ' the contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler.while the vehicle was being serviced for an unrelated repair, the mechanic noticed that the front passenger's side frame was severely rusted.the front driver's side frame contained a hole and a crack.the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified.the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.jcc

The frame on my 1999 jeep wrangler tj is rotting through in several places.a vehicle only 15 years old normally has problems, but it should not be a frame rusting though.i am asking you to urge chrysler to do the right thing for me and many jeep owners who are also experiencing this problem and recall and replace the frames.other automobile manufacturers have done this as it is a safety issue and the right thing to do.thank you.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. The contact stated that the undercarriage and frame were corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

I'm not sure what the problem with the car is, but at around 55 mph, the vehicle begins to lose control and then gains it again as it speeds up.possibly some sort of resonance found at that speed, but it has begun to be a severe problem.i have been driving down the road and if i hit that speed on the wrong section, the car beings to practically bounce up and down.this doesn't seem safe or right to me.

At highway speed vehicle wobbles violently, causingdriver to lose control.dealer has inspected and repairedfour tires; however, problem still exists. Please provide further information.

I have owned vehicle 6 years and have 118000 miles and found frame is rotting away makean unsafe vehicle

From time of purchase , my wife has been complaining that her vehicle is wobbling. We have taken the jeep to the dealer several times to fix, but they seem at a loss as to whats causing the problem. Our 6th trip to the dealer will be this monday, june 28,1999.i spoke with dennis tagge, service manager at palm auto mall, he stated that the tires may be slipping on the rims as the vehicle accelerates. He has decided that sanding the rims and\or adding some form of nonslip compound might solve the problem. I 'm not as confident as he that this will resolve it. Please let me know if this type of problem has been reported before. Each time we took the jeep into the dealer, they rebalanced the wheels in hopes this problem would dissappear. We are on our second and a half set of tires and yet the problem persists. I have suggested to them the problem may be in the wheels themselves and they should be replaced. They seem reluctant to do this. I don't want to go through alot more of this, please help if you can. Thank you.( dot number: tire size: 30x9.5r15 )

Vehicle had tires replaced at approx. 40,000 miles, after several front end alignments and tire rotations tires showed signs of uneven wear. Recommended new tires be computer balanced and yet another front end alignment. On dec 27, 2001, driving on rural rt 6a (cape cod ma) at 35 mph, unable to turn steering wheel on two corners then front right wheel fell off @ ball-joint and remained connected to vehicle but strayed under the car causing the vehicle to roll 4 timesend over end, coming to rest after taking down a phone pole. All 4 wheels came off during accident, driver and 1 pass. To hospital, vehicle totaled, consumer payed for phone pole. Vehicle had just passed state safety inspection.

This dealer installs 30inch tire/wheels which are factory parts without required factory equipment. Contacted chrysler who allthough is aware of this has done nothing

Two sidewall blowouts while driving.first tire blewout frominside.

Vehicle was slowing down to 50mph and the tread blew out on rear passengers tire. Tire showed white discoloration between tread and sidewall. Wrangler sra, size p245/70r16, original equipment on a 1999, jeep, grand cherokee with 30,000 miles. Goodyear will be contacted.

Blowout at 70mph, major problem, tire tread came off front of wheel entirely.(tiresize: r15lt)

The gauges on my 1999 jeep wrangler work only occasionally. I found nhtsa recall no. 99v117000 on you web site stating there was a recall on this. I contacted daimler chrysler at 1-800-992-1997 and they said there was nothing they could do for me as my vehicle was not affected. My vin [xxx]. What gives?. Consumer states that while driving the instrument panel will shut off, the consumer is not aware of the speed or how much gas is in the vehicle. Contacted dealer and the dealer noted that the vehicle is not part of recall(99v-117). Nlm*yd

The dash gauges on my 99 jeep wrangler ceased to function and i found the nhtsa web site had a recall (no 99v117000) which described my problem.i went to my local jeep dealer (ancira winton jeep - hwy 281, sa, tx) and they ran my jeep wrangler model on their web site and gave me a printout which stated there was no recall information for my vehicle and they would not repair the problem without approval from chrysler.i have contacted chrysler and they have assigned the case no 16611542 for my inquiry. The nhtsa recall documents outline the problem clearly and chrysler has acknowledged their responsibility to repair the item.my vin (xp423303) falls within the range of identified vehicles (xp401783-xp432081), but my greater concern is that chrysler-jeep does not acknowledge this recall item in their operations.i would appreciate your assistance or referral in resolving this problem - thanks! in advance mike buonaugurio, lt col, usaf.

The defroster blower motor failed.when working, it only functioned on the low and high settings. There was a related recall, however the vehicle identification number was not included.

All of the instrument panel gauges failed.the consumer had to strike the dash board or restart the vehicle in order to get them to function again.related recall 99v117000, however the vehicle identification number was not included.

Consumer states that the instrument panel light will work intermittently causing a distraction to the consumer. Dealer notified and has replaced this on two occasions and consumer is still having problems. Ts

Beginning in 4-99, we have had numerous things go wrong with our new vehicle. First the "check engine" light came on, ac/heater quit/ manfold/exhaust leak/ now all the gauges have gone crazy on the dash & i just got it out of the shop on 1/17/2000, for the very same thing.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. While traveling 50 mph, the contact noticed when driving over a bump, all warning lights would appear on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in recall 99v117000 (unknown or other). The current and failure mileages were approximately 128,000.updated 12/30/10. *ljthe consumer also stated the air bag light illuminated. Updated 01/04/11.

While drivingspeedometer did not work.driver didnotknow how fast the vehicle was going.

While driving at any speed air bag light and check engine light appeared on the dashboard .this caused the speedometer to fail.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it home.consumer will contact the dealer in the near future.*la

The contact owns a 1999 jeep wrangler. While driving approximately 40 mph, the speedometer failed and the engine warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that this was a recurring failure. *tc *sc

At 41,000 miles accelerator pedal descended more often than necessary when it wasdepressed while driving. Thiscaused tachometer to rise between 1500-2000 rpms.

A/c-heater fan control switch burns out every 2 to 4 years. I am the original owner of a 99 jeep tj wrangler. I have replaced the fan control switch 4 times now. Each time the pigtail has fried as well and needed replacing. First time dealer replaced under warranty. Second, third and fourth time i paid to have it replaced. After 3rd time i wrote to chrysler and explained and showed all dealer repair paper work and they reimbursed with check for one repair. Dealer gave me a credit on an additional repair. This last (4th) repair i found out that chrysler knows about the issue, and has reduced the price of the replacement part by half. I was told to expect this to be a normal repair every 2 to 4 years for as long as i have the vehicle. I was told for a few model years they have constant power to the fan and this eventually leads to a burn out. Sometimes causing more damage if the flareup is big. Chrysler won't do any more reimb. And no plans to fix model years affected. Bummer!! repair dates: 7/2000; 8/2002; 9/2004;8/2008part number: 55037473ab.

Anytime i turn the defogger during rain water comes into the vehicle.

If hvac system is left on maximum heat setting for a length of time, the contacts in the fan speed selector switch melt causing failure of some or all of the fan speed modes and require switch replacement.

Defroster/heater blower motor and switch quit.replaced at least once before, within a year & a half.first, only one speed on the fan works then nothing.

Problems with back and door latches breaking and jamming making it impossible to open the doors.also, flimsy plastic sleeves that connect the a/c/fan/temperature knobs to the control panel break easily making it impossible to use the defroster and panel fans, heater, and a/c.

Through research it was brought to my attention that a bad paint job can cause the windshieldto fall out of its frame. Chrysler recently painted my car under warranty but did a horrible job. The following website suggested reporting this problem to this organization: https://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/oscripts/ivoq/voq/voq6.cfmi would also like to add that chrysler left both the windshield and drivers side mirror on my car damaged.
