Read complaints for JEEP WRANGLER (1998)

First incident was the drivers side area under the dashboard filling with at least two inches of water that had to be drained. All windows and hoods were up and secure in both instances. Second complaint while driving the air bag light came on and all guages dropped to zero while driving at 55 mph.

My gauges on the dashboard consistently go to "0" while driving my 1998 jeep wrangler.my speedometer, tachometer, battery status, oil, and engine temp all go to the left and the red airbag light comes on. This especially occurs while driving over bumps. It is a huge safety concern because i never know how fast i am going, when i need gas, or if my air bag will deploy in my face or if it will deploy in the event of an accident. There have been so many other reports concerning this same issue that it is incumbent on the government or jeep/chryslerto rectify this situation!

Dt*:the contact stated the following components failed intermittently, the airbag light illuminated, the speedometer and the tachometer showed no reading. The vehicle does not have to be in motion for the problem to occur. The contact believes the problem may be related to the clock spring, although the vehicle has not been inspected by a local dealer. The turn siganl would not cnacel, the dealer repalced the turn signal switch.uypdated 03/28/06.

Gauges drop off intermittently (sometimes when hit a bump, other times on it's own).tach and speedometer drop to zero, airbag light comes on.tapping on panel, lights will go off, then come back on.very sporadic when it happens--every day for a week or two, then nothing for a couple of days, then for 3 days, etc., etc.also lose mileage indicator (how many miles were really on it when i purchased it new?!?!?!)seen so many compliants now from consumers, would like a recall!!!will my airbagwork?don't want to kill anyone to find out!!

Clock spring in steering column shorted out also, engine controller, and horn failure.also air bag and cruise control lights came on.

Airbag light intermittently is illuminated ondash, causing all gauges to return to zero while driving. Dealer has been contacted. Dealer can not duplicate problem, they say the fix a ground wire, however the problem never is corrected, this usually happens when starting up and usually lasts about 10-45 seconds.

The air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.the interior gauges for the dashboard lights appeared onand remained on as well.the gasoline gauge and the speedometer were inoperable.this caused poor visibility to the driver.the consumer drove to the dealer and after inspecting the vehicle, the mechanic informed the consumer that the dashboard panel needed to be replaced and the clock spring for the air bag.please provide additional information.

This vehicle has its gauges drop off intermittently.in some cases, all guages drop, in others just the tach and speedometer. Shelley warsaw cp je, clarksville, md has worked on the vehicle on 3 occasions.initially they replaced the airbag sensor.this did not solve the problem.the vehicle spent 1.5 days in this facility in june.they diagnosed it as a harnass connector problem.the situation appeared to be remediated, but has once again occurred.it is uncomfortable to drive a vehicel that indicates a problem with the airbag (check airbag signal) on a daily basis.

Periodically the dashboard gauges cut out and do not function.at the same time the air bag light goes on.per discussion with a dealer, if the airbag light is on the airbag will not properly function.

Air bag warning light come on and all dash instruments and gauges fail to function.

Vehicle wasexperiencing an erratic instrument cluster, and air bag light operation.intermittently while driving instrument cluster, speedometer and tachometer rolled back to zero, and the air bag warning light came on. Also,at 82,000miles left turn signal engaged when the brake pedal wasdepressed, and at 78,000miles whendriver's side door was opened while the truck was still running the defroster light cameon.dealership had not been contacted.consumer took vehicle to two jeep dealers and said that they're aware of the problem and many customers have experienced the same problem.also, they said that it was a defective electrical connector.*la

Airbag light come on and speedo and tach stops working. Vehicle has not been in an accident and this is occuring on numerous jeeps of this year. Why has there not been a recall? if something isn't done about this i will be getting a lot of jeep owners together and filing a class action lawsuit!! it is a serious safety problem. I just purchased the vehicle and after researching this its happening to the majority on this years wranglers

Vehicle has been in for repair three occassions for air bag repair and waiting for parts on last repair, however during accident during waiting period vehicle experienced no deployment of air bag and seat belt failure resulting in head injury to driver.

My son was killed when the 98 jeep wrangler lost control and flipped. The air bags did not deploy. I have noticed that this has been an issue since this vehicle was built in 1998. Many complaints since the year of 1998 and no recall or fix?

Control panel instrumentation system components sporadically shut down and air bag light comes on while driving.

Irbag light comes on and the gauges go to zero including the speedometer, tachometer and gas gauge. They sometimes come back on when the car goes over a bump.

Instrument cluster goes out - speedometer and tach, or all other gauges go out, airbag light comes on.appears to be many documented cases of this same failure with the wiring harness/instrument cluster problem since 1998.numerous service bulletins but no recalls!what can be done to prevent the problem and is there a recall for this?

Airbag light comes on, indictating a defect in the air bag system. Alsospeedometer failed.. Dealer has not fixed the defects.the tachometer fails when the spedometer starts to work.

Since date of purchase instrument panel becomes inoperable, and airbag light comes on intermittently. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

Air bag sensor light illuminated and knocked out digital console readings. Both doors bulked in half due to cold weather, failing to latch shut. Steering box is leaking due to a crack. Last item was replaced three weeks prior torecurring failure.transmission and torque converter were repaired due to leaking transmission cooler lines.

Air bag sensor lamp illuminates at any speed of operation preceeded by ticking sound from under the steering wheel column.once sensor illuminates tachometer stops and odometer stops recording miles.the problem can occur at any time and last anywhere from 10 seconds to 20 minutes.manufacturers literature states that airbag can be deployed while sensor is illuminated.two dealership attempts at repairing the problem have been unsuccessful.the manufacturer claims it may never accurately identify or resolve the problem.

No gauges are working and air bag light comes on contacted dealer said they had the same problem with three other jeeps already!

Airbag light stays on while driving and the tachometer/ speedometer dropped to zero... All other gauges display properly and i had no power loss.....it was really tense because i did not know how fast i was going down the freeway.... I cannot get this repaired because there isnot a code to check (check engine light does not come on) this has happen 5 times since october 2007.... After researching i found that i am not the only one having this problem.....

On 03/26/99 i was involved in an auto-auto collision, impacting front right side. Other auto was going 35+ mph. Neither pass. Nor driver airbags deployed. I am concerned that my airbags may be defective. Dealer contacted but has yet to investigate. Manufacturer (chrysler corp.) contacted but will not do anything because guam is not within continental us. I just want to know if in fact they should have deployed or not.

Gauges on insterment panel will go out and then the air bag light will come on.this have happened repeteadly.

Several times the dash cluster quits working and air bag lights come on.have heard of several other owners having same problem.

Problem 1: instrument panel shuts down and airbag light comes on.problem 2: when turning the steering wheel it makes a sqeaking or grinding like noise.

Airbag light comes on at random and all gauges drop to zero!

While driving at 35 mph another vehicle hit the consumer from the back, causing the consumer to hit the vehicle in front of her, and driver's side air bag and passenger's air bags didn't deploy.

Vehicle was in an accident, andair bag did not deploy.

Driver hit a berm of rock/sand at approx. 30 mph, right front of jeep, the seat belt around the driver's waist held, but the belt over the driver's shoulder did not hold, the driver's face hit the middle of the dashboard and broke three teeth that had to be removed.also, airbag's did not deploy.

Consumer had started to make a left turn when the accelerator got stuck, causingconsumer to drive through a wall and hit a house . Dual airbags did not deploy at the time of impact which could have resulted in injuries.

Defective electrical connector caused all the gauges tofail and air bags to shut down.*ml

Air bag light comes on. The dash and the gauges (speedometer, rpm, etc.) stopped working. Dealer contacted to repair work, problem still exists.

Air bag light remained on while driving. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the consumer that the problem was due to the wiring harness being too short.

I own a 1998 jeep wranglervin number [xxx] i purchased new on apr 10, 1998 since feb. 1, 2003 the instrument panel has off and on not been working properly. This included all the gauges and air bag indicator. I have take my vehicle to a authorized dealer service shop for repair on 2-6-2003, 10-16-2003 and 5-19-2004. The first two times they said the the instrument panel had corrosion and they sprayed it. The last time they said it was to much corrosion and that i had to pay for replaceing it about $900.00 this vehicle as of this date has only 16076 miles on it. This is very dangerous because i have driven this vehicle when instructment and air bag indicator has stop working. Updated 07/25/2012 * jsinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

The air bag light comes on. All the other dashboard indicators do not work when this happens. This problem occurs intermittently.

The vehicle has developed an odor associated with leaking anitfreeze.3 different trips to make repairs, no action on first trip, second trip, dealer replaced thermostat housing, third trip, dealer replaced radiator.vehicle still has odor at different times.seat belts have been replaced 3 times on right hand side and once on left hand side due to belts getting pinched in hardtop doors and damaging belts.belt on right hand has had failure of seat belt inertia lock during hard stop.electrical system: airbag light illuminated at various times, and at the same time the speedometer and tachometer failed momentarily.fix was to clean and grease connectors.system is starting to repeat same problem, and dealer cannot find a problem.steering column lower bushing has developed noise, after rain or onset of cold weather.dealer states fix is to lube bushing, but problem persists after 4 dealer visits.rear axle seals on left hand and right hand were leaking, resulting in rear wheel lockup with moderate brake application on damp pavement or sandy road surfaces.dealer replaced both seals, but nothing was said about possible brake lining contamination or cleaning.vehicle has had repeated water leakage from around windshield on left and right hand sides, right hand hardtop door hinge attach bolts, thru seals on cowl and around doors.dealer has replaced all seals, rtv'd gaps, and installed updated door seals, but vehicle still leaks.also, carpets were water damaged in front passenger area due to water leakage from vehicle body and airconditioning system.vehicle has been kept for up to two days on two different occasions for water leaks and multiple repair complaints.

Electrical system and cruise control.

Started vehicle after it had sat for 13 hours.vehicle started without a problem, but a pop/crackling sound was heard at start-up.the radio was turned on and it immediatley powered down and clock went blank.all the gauges on the instrument panel read "0".the headlights, foglights, instrument panel lights work.the interior light does not work.all fuses for radio, instrument panel and interior light are not blown.this is the first incident of any problems with the vehicle.

After parking our 1998 wrangler at the hospital to visit my mother my car was reported on fire.the firemen stated and wrote a report it was an electrical fire.the wrangler is totaled and the insurance company will not pay the vehicle off.we are short $3,000 of the pay off.my immediate concern isi was glad i was not driving at the time of the fire and did this happen to other owners of a wrangler.this car is only going into 5 years old and has had the rear end replaced at our expense and the gauges go on and off and this was fixed once. What caused this electrical fire?i want jeep to respond to why this happened.

I have had numerous times that my gauges just stop working and then one day i went to drive it and i had no turn signals or brake lights. It is in the mechanic shop as we speak. They have found the electrical connector under the left side of the dash has completely melted and all the wires have fused together. I was very lucky that it didn't catch on fire. Now the other problem is finding the part my mechanic has tried everywhere to fin it. So now my jeep is just sitting in the shop going on three days now until a part can be found. Why is there no recall on this as i see on here and other sites that it is dangerous and many have had the same issues??

Consumer stated the fuel tank had a cracked which caused fluid to leak out.the dealer was notified.the fuel tank had leaked since the owner purchased the vehicle at 39k miles.the fuel tank overflowed when filled in hot weather.both the fuel tank nut replacement tank were difficult to obtain due to shortage.the tachometer and speedometer had become inoperative.the service dealer found a poor connection behind the cluster.the throttle sensor did not have a good seal in which moisture had gotten into it.the fuel tank corroded badly and the new tank nut was useless.the consumer replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, and the gas tank.the consumer requested reimbursement. *scc also the water pumpserpentine belt, and battery were replaced.

All of a sudden the speedometer and tachometer go dead, and the airbag and engine light come on. Seems to happen during the summer months. I have to hit the dash a couple of times and everything starts working again. Doesn't happen in the winter when it's cold. It's a little unnerving when the speedometer stops working.

Electrical system failure.

Electrical system failed.nlm

1998 jeep wrangler 4.0l, exhaust manifold crack at 30,000 miles.jeep/chrysler refused to fix, stating only catalytic converter covered under warranty.crack occurred in a weld joining the two pipe, almost 3/4 of the way around the pipe, causing cosiderable noise, and loss of power.guages fail periodically, but come back on there own, after a few minutes.air conditioner drains onto floor inside vehicle on long drives and can even short out the radio. The steering column also sqeals like an old door when its cold outside.

When cold or damp or raining and with light throttle the engine stumbles/shuts off.the tachometer and speedometer register nothing.this is very frightening when amidst heavy traffic at 55 or 65 mph.i searched the web and found other instances of the same problem, but no recall??? and no cure??? for this very unsafe condition.

I was driving and running the heater and noticed a burning smell. I immediately shut down the hvac unit and smell subsided. I pulled the hvac head unit out and had a vacuum line and it's insulation melted. This could have caused a fire.the heat and ac now only work on the highest setting.

Instrument cluster/gauges intermittently stop functioning while driving and the airbag light also comes on. There is no warning, just a shut down of all gauges. I have read several reports of this same problem occurring on this same year and model of wrangler. I have also read that the airbag will not function when this problem occurs. This appears to be a wide spread problem and a serious safety hazard. What would be the reason that there has been no recall to correct this?

Purchased my jeep new in 1998 and i only drove it about 5000 miles per year..in about 2009 i began to have some trouble with the gauges/speedometer..they would stop functioning for periods of time...in about 2010 i there was an odor coming from the vents when i used my heater or ac..each time i took it to the dealer where i purchased the vehicle and the last time i had it checked was the end of september 2011.on november 21, 2011 i was driving to the grocery store with the heater on and smoke started coming out of the vents..i turned off the heater & blower & then saw fire coming out from under the dash on the passenger side.i stopped & tried to put out the flames with my jacket.a lady stopped to help & called 911.while waiting for the fire department (just a few minutes) and i was sitting in the lady's car...i watched my jeep start moving to the right (even though the ignition was turned off & the jeep was in gear)...it went into a grass field, burst into flames and was a total loss.i only had minor burns on my fingers & hands (from trying to put out the fire). I am extremely upset!

Ac controls and resistor wiring harness has melted cant get replacement parts from a dealer or salvage yards what am i supposed to do . I think the jeep wrangler needs to atleast make a replacement part or fix it on a recall.

Intermittently airbag light comes on rpm and speedometer gauges fail sometimes all gauges fail....sometimes when i honk my horn they "come back up"... This has been going on for years... Very dangerous because i do not know how fast i am going... Took it to the mechanic replaced my ignition switch...2 days ago and last night the problem appeared again.. Doesn't matter what speed i am going gauges will fail.

The contact owns a 1998 jeep wrangler. While driving at an unknown speed, the speedometer failed to display the speed intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,000.

I have had numerous problems with my jeep wrangler 1998.this is a partial list i sent to chrysler:i bought my jeep with just 3600 miles on it from a dealer in 1999. From day one i started experiencing problems. Many of them i returned to the service department. Some they were able to fix, others, after many return trips, they were 'unable to duplicate the problem'. 1.gauges would stop working while driving - i brought the vehicle in 5 times before they were able to duplicate and finally fix the problem. 2.this was also true of the blinkers that not always worked - or worked all at the same time.3. My hazards still do not work every time. 4. The air conditioner goes out when driving, very uncomfortable when it is hot and raining. 5. The sound bar has never worked properly - first it would only come in some times - now never.6.headers are cracked - bad. They have been welded several times. When i went to have them welded it was found they were welded before my purchase - at 3600 mil!they are still cracked, welding does not hold. I can not get anyone to replace them because even exhaust specialists say it is too cumbersome. The dealer charges way more than i have considering the number of repairs and the price of gas - at 12 mpg.7.drivers seat belt locks tightly with any amount of pressure on the brakes - it has now gotten to the point it locks just while driving.8.windows - the zippers broke almost immediately - i paid alot to have these replaced. The back window now has a cut in it and is very difficult to see through. 9.the top has never quite fit right; it has always leaked and been extremely noisy - more so than anyone else's that i know. It has also come apart at the seams.the dealership has not been of any help. They wanted to charge outrageous amounts just for diagnostics, even when i had the best warranty. I've also had problems with the door molding coming out immediately, grinding in the steering wheel, grinding while trying to put it in reverse and more.*nlm

I have recently purchased a new jeep wrangler sahara.since the 8000 mile mark, my airbag light constantly comes on and all my dash gauges drop to 0.this happens when i am driving all the time.i have taken it in four times to get it fixed but jeep has failed to fix the problem.i asked them if this means that if there is an accident, the airbag won't deploy because the computer already thinks it has.they walk around the subject saying that this has been a commonly reported failure in the new jeeps, yet i have seen no recall information on it.they told me they received a number of bad electrical harnesses that control the airbag from their mexico plant and even the new replacement parts are failing.i worry that my airbag will not work when the time comes and they refuse to replace the vehicle even though it is under warrenty and is being fixed for the fourth time for the exact same problem.i have written the factory and received no response and now the dealership avoids answering my questions.can you help?

Since 1999 gauges droppedoff intermittently , sometimes when hittinga bump, other times on itsown. Tachometer and speedometer droppedto zero, airbag light cameon. Sometimes stopping and restarting engine corrected the problem. Very sporadic when it happened. Also, lose mileage indicator. Seen so many complaints now from consumers, not to mention air bag non-deployment complaints.multiple chrysler dealerships knew thiswasa common problem, but didn't seem to care.why is this not a recall issue?? will my airbag work? i didn't want to die to find out!!

My 1998 jeep tjwas purchased used in 2004 with only 47,000 miles. Ran great for about 5 months and then would die while driving at any given time. Then after sitting for 30mins would start back up and could be driven about 40 miles before it shut down again. No check engine light would come on. So distcap. Plugs, wires, rotor and ignition coil were changed and the problem persisited with intermitten problems. So a obii handheld scanner by innova was purchased to scan the system which finally caught a code in the jeep. The code was p0352 which was a result of the pick up coil inside the distributor going out. Was purchase from the dealer. Part# 56041030. Cost in ca is $57.85. Was changed and runs great however the jeep is now having new problems which have to be addressed and trouble shot. Hope this helps with the erractic itermitten ignition problems. Oh and to test the coil to see if it is bad you need a volt meter and set it to check resistance. The resistance from primary terminals to the high tension terminal should be 11.3 to 15.3 ohms on a diamond brand and 11.3 to 13.3 on a toyodenso brand. And when checking from primary to the other primary it should be 0.97 to 1.18 ohms on diamond and 0.95 to 1.20 ohms on a toyodenso brand.the primary is where the two wire connector from the harness plugs into.

I want jeep to issue a recall on this dangerous problem, not charge me 400.00 to fix it. No safety defect listed.

When putting key in ignition, key will not turn, steering wheel will not turn either to unlock it.

Instrument panel gauges and lights go off intermittently when using turn signal. Blower power failed altogether (mechanic found burned out wiring harness under dashboard.)air conditioner failed --evaporator and compressor.water leaks on passenger side from front windshield (windshield was replaced twice at dealer but failed to fix problem.)rear center break light wire failed. Hood latch broke off.

Defective electrical connector caused all the gauges tofail and air bags to shut down.*ml

Under dash wiring malfunctioned, causing the gauges to go out, and started an electrical fire.

Brake rotors had to be re-finished after only 8000 miles.i question the quality of materials chrysler is using.steering wheel rubbing:steering column would make a rubbing noise every time it was turned.did this even on the initial test drive new off the lot.they said it was a simple lubrication issue.2 weeks later, the noise was back.i brought it in a total of 6 times before the problem was finally resolved, apparently with some new super slick polymer and only after i personally called the factory to get advice.other issues:driver's seat creaks like an old tractor.they couldn't fix it.i had the problem with the gauges on my dash going off.they knew what that was and dixed it.exhaust manifold went after only 12,000 miles (more substandard parts used by chrysler).this is why i hesitate to buy american.

As i have read mentioned by others at this website, about a year after i bought the jeep, my dash gauges would go down to zero and the airbag light would go on.this problem is a winter and wet-whether related problem.if i pound on the dashboard with my fist, sometimes the gauges will recover temporarily.if they do recover, they almost immediately go back down to zero.i spoke with a dealership about the problem. They acted surprised.i see from other peoples comments that their are numerous other occasions of this problem.i thought i was alone with this problem until earlier today when a mechanic friend of a friend mentioned someone else with the 1998 jeep wrangler has the exact same problem.i needa response from the government.has there been a recall issued on this?i have also had my catalytic converter "crumble to pieces" according to a local garage.he seemd to think that there was a recall on the catalytic converters.i am at a loss as to how to find out if there indeed has been a recall.please contact me.

Wiring harness for dash, both hazard-blinker-headlights, burning plastic smell, could not locate, ended with smoke rolling out of steering column when when we started the engine, luckily, we pulled the fuse that powered it out of fuse box to enable us to return home--70 miles away, with no lights, blinkers, etc.called dealer, wanted $400.00+ to look at it, and asked about the erratic dash odometer activity.we took it to a local repair shop, and was told that it would have damaged the complete electrical system in dash had we not removed the power to the harness.melted harness nearly completely.erratic gauge operation still a problem, if you hit a bump they come back on.they still want 400+ dollars to look at it at the dealer.this is only one of many problems (converter replaced by dealer 2 times already in 1 and half year, brakes don't engage properly-had brake lines checked repeatedly, etc). Driving at approximately 50 mphengine totally shut down/inoperative without any warning, causing a loss of control.the consumer had to pull emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. Prior to this incident, consumer had problems with the check engine light coming on every 2-3 months, but dealer cannot determine what was causing the problem.

Mechanic stated that the oil pump came loose because it wasn't correctly tightened at the factoey. This caused the crankshaft and bearings to burn up. The oil pump should not have come loose @ 26000 miles, it is a weekend vehicle it is also out of warranty.

Engine had a clatter noise and short block was replaced. Ever since, there has been excessive vibration whenever vehicle is running - does not have to be moving. Previous engine did not have vibration. Other vehicles test driven to compare do not vibrate as strongly. Dealer states this is a normal vibration and will not do anything about it.rear axle housing had oil leak due to axle tube not seated properly into center housing. Complete rear axle assembly was replaced. No problems with this.

A known problem with exhaust leaks on wranglers.nlm

The exhaust manifold/header cracks at the bottom on the inside pipe i have talked to a few other people and it is apperantly a very common problem on 1997 - 2000 models. It is an emmissions leak and also a possible corbon monoxside problem. I know of 8 jeeps with the same problem and i haven't talked to very many people. The replacement part is the same part that is now installed on my jeep, so i don't expect it to last very long.

Exhaust manifold bolts are snapping off in the block of jeep 2.5 4 cyl engine. This problem is documented by chrysler as a design fault problem but they will not cover it. The problem has not been repaired yet because chrysler will not cover it and it is a very expensive fix that can't be afforded at this time. The problem is also a safety problem due to the fact that the exhaust is leaking from between the manifold and head and could get into the vehicle. The problem was first noticed in about jan 02. The vehicle currently has 54000 miles on it. This vehicle also had a total catalytic converter failure that was covered under the emissions warranty. I feel that this problem with the exhaust manifold should be covered under, the same warranty, especially considering the fact that it was a faulty part design and not wear an tear. Catalytic converter "imploded" all the interior components came loose and began to rattle. It was replaced under the 8 year 80,000 emissions warranty. Supposedly a common problem

I took the jeep last year to get the rattle fixed. They fixed it, but on the 1/12/02 i took it back for the same rattle. I don't believe they fixed it, just tightened the linkage up. My wife and i spent 7 hours at landers without anyone contacting us about what the problem was. They also broke a bolt off in the block that holds the exhaust manifold on, again we weren't informed. Our warrenty covered the exhaust problem, but landers said that the linkage wasn't covered even though they had worked on the linkage less than a year ago. They are supposed to cover any repairs they make for a year, but they didn't honor this. We spent 7 hours waiting for the jeep to be repaired. They offered us a rental to get us home, but didn't offer any gas money oranything for our incovience about driving 150 miles (one way).i'm a gunsmithand make $30 a hour and i was away from my work for 20 hours because of landers not informing me of how long the repairs would take. Now i'm behind with my work and having to work16 hours a day to catch up. I would like some comp. For my time lost. Also my wife went with me to landers and sat through their lies, and she lost work time also. Landers is supposed to have a five star rating toward their customers. We were treated like unwanted step-children. Landers didn't offer to supply us with transport to go get something to eat, inform us of the problems with our jeep, and charged us 69.97 for labor and 24.97 for parts, that shouldn't have worn out after 27,100 miles unless they damaged when they 'fixed' the linkages the first time. I know i'm not improtant to them, but i believe they destroyed the bushings the first time they worked on them, and broke the manifold bolt trying to tighten it down causing them to have to pull the head off the motorhead off the engine to get to.

I have a 98 tj jeep 2.5lt with on it 57,000 now.what i experienced was a major power loss in the while getting on the freeway. The symptoms were as follows. The engine would rev up but the rpms & speed would rise slowly. I though maybe the clutch was slipping and pulled off the freeway and drove it back home . I noticed it got worse and the engine was running poorly at idle and if you gave it gas it would bog down and die. I also noticed strong exhaust fumes and very little pressure from the exhaust pipe. So i took it to the muffler shop for a new catalytic converter and they informed me that i should take it to the jeep dealer. Because in ca there's a federal recall law that states that the dealer must replace the catalytic converter at no cost to the owner if it fails before 80,000 miles regardless if you bought it new or not and mine had 56,000. So i took it to the dealer and they installed a brand new catalytic converter free of charge and labor. The jeeps runs great and the dealership was very nice .they said they have had problems on this with certain models.hope this helps. Oh if you really want to know if that's the problem just disconnect the exhaust pipe going up to the exhaust manifold real quick and fire it up if it starts right up and has power then you know that's it. But hook it back up don't drive it like that. You might damage the engine. You'll need a 14mm deep socket and some wd40 to removed the 2 nuts on the studs. That's it.

Exhaust manifold cracked.

Fill up my tank and the pump stops.i pull out the pump handle and fuel comes back out of the gas tank.i have to pay special attention to how far i drive in miles and when i fill up look at the number of gallons going in the tank.should not have to do this.

My 1998 jeep wrangler overflows whenever i fill it up with gasoline.every time this happens i waste my money and is forced to wipe up the excess gas by the station.

My jeep spews out gasoline every time i fill up at the pump. The gas comes from the top of the gas tank, and is a very dangerous hazard. I am still not able to prevent it from happening after numerous tries.

Liquid fuel blows out of fuel filler pipe while refuelling/cannot properly refuel vehicle. Concern happens every time while refuelling and at any refuelling station. I cannot refuel this vehicle without getting fuel sprayed on me or my clothing; very dangerous.

Consumerexperiencing ongoing problems with varous parts: 1. Cracked intake manifold; 2. Muffler failed/ replaced;, 3. Water leaking through front windshield moulding; 4. Instrument lights would intermittently go out, and 5. Fuel gauge/sender would not register properly.

In tank electric fuel pump gasket failure.i filled the fuel tank on a 1998 jeep wrangler on a sunday night, the vehicle sat in my driveway over night and into the following afternoon.upon returning home from work i noticed a very strong odor of gasoline, upon further investigation i found the fuel running at a steay stream onto my driveway from the jeep i had filled up the previous evening.i attempted to locate the source of the leak and stop it, however i was unable to locate the source of the leak.i removed the fuel tank from the vehicle and found the fuel to be leaking around the retaining ring for the fuel pump that is installed in the fuel tank.i checked the screw on retaining ring for tightness and found it to be secure and snug on the tank.the ring is a screw on type collar made of hardened plastic, which holds the fuel pump in the tank, the fuel pump sits on a flat rubber gasket which sits on the lip of the plastic gas tank.upon removing the retaining ring and lifting the fuel pump out of the tank i noticed the gasket was crimped and torn on the top flat portion of the gasket. I contacted the owner to discuss possible causes for the gasket tear, the owner claimed to have had the vehicle in for a faulty fuel level indicator a couple months earlier.which was inline with what i had assumed seeing as the fuel tank had grease pencil writing on top of the tank indicating a technicians initials, date and mileage. This probably explains the torn gasket, however upon obtaining a new gasket and attempting to reinstall the new gasket in the tank with the fuel pump i noticed the reason the gasket probably tore, the retaining ring has a tendency to grab the gasket and turn it as the ring seats itself.i was very careful and cautious while installing this ring and gasket considering i did not have another gasket and i did not want to tear this replacement part.i need more room to finish.please email me at [email protected] out of room.

Afterthe vehicle was parked in the garage for several hoursthe vehicle caught on firewithin the engine compartment due to faulty fuel lines.please give any further details.

Cracked fuel line.fuel leak resulted in potential for a vehicle fire/explosion and enviormental damage.

Fuel leaked from top of tank when full or near full.

Many problems with this vehicle. Water pump leaked - fixed under warranty, gas tank seal leaked - fixed under warranty, seats ripped - fixed under warranty, suction cup marks on window - fixed under warranty, front stabilizer shock leaked - fixed under warranty, rear window seal leaked - repaired under warranty two times and still leaks, instrument panel fails - out of warranty not repaired, radiator failed - out of warranty fixed at my cost, stabilizer arm failed both sides twice - fixed under warranty once and the out of warranty fixed at my cost, exhaust manifold failed - out of warranty - fixed at my cost, clutch fork failed - out of warranty fixed at my cost, leak under the dash board passenger side - fixed under warranty.of all the problems above... Loss of instrument panel needs to be fixed by the manufacturer regardless of in or out of warranty. Loss of gauges is a driving distraction and can result in an accident. Jeep needs to address this manufacturing defect as long as this vehicle is on the road.

Whenever the fuel tank is filled it leaks down off the top of the tank onto the skid plate.with the muffler next to the gas tank this poses a serious fire hazard. The gauges work intermittently, includes: tach, speedometer, temp, oil pressure, fuel, and amp meter.when they stop working the airbag light comes on.also the cruise control willn't work.the odometer lights up but no mileage is registered.

Faulty fuel level indicator. I suspect a bad fuel sending unit. Fuel gauge shows approximately 1/4 tank of gas left, however the car will actually be completely out of gas.

In november of 2003 my husband bought me a 1998 jeep wrangler and about 2 weeks after driving it i discovered that the gas gauge only works when it wants to. So i started doing a little research on line and found out that 98 wranglers had been recalled in the uk for bad gas gauges but not in the us . I was wondering why that is. And apparently there are many electrical problems with the 98s. A bad sending unit might not be a problem to other people but i work construction and spent many nights driving to work in snow storms. When they call you in to shovel snow at 2 am theres not many gas stations open.

Rear drive shaft sheared in two at a weld joint located between the shaft main tube body and universal joint part.the failure appears to be associated with an improper weld seam (weld on apparently a third of the circumference of the shaft tube appears not to have been completed).i don't know if the welding process was done manually or by machine and if by machine how many other shafts are similarly affected.i will mail a more complete copy of a write-up of the incident as well as photographs (i sent chrysler.i contacted chrysler and they have not followed up on the incident (other than a voice mail acknowledging receipt of a letter from me and they would look into the matter.that has been close to 5 months of no response.

Electrical problemscaused the airbag light to come on. Also, problems with speedometer, and antenna which was caused by a cpv that burnt out.please provide further details.

Airbag light comes on, indictating a defect in the air bag system. Alsospeedometer failed.. Dealer has not fixed the defects.the tachometer fails when the spedometer starts to work.

Experiencing speedometer failure.

When air bag light illuminates the speedometer fails also, repairs on three occasions.

1. The transmission has started jumping in and out of 3rd gear in the 32 to 50 mph range.bubbles are present in the fluid indicating a seal is failing.repair estimate at this time is over $1000.this failure in snowy driving conditions causes vehicle control problems.2. Passenger seat belt retracts intermittently.the passenger will lean forward and back may not notice the seatbelt has not retracted.this can certainly cause serious injury or death in the event of an accident.3. Sudden acceleration at idle.vehicle idle will jump from 1.5k to 3k without warning.obviously a serious safety hazard.4. Anti-sway bar link failure.this is perhaps the most insidious failure.the stabilizer bar link ball will corrode in the socket and cause it to separate.the rubber boot around it covers the failure. When an emergency turn is required, the jeep will sway violently.i talked to the chrysler parts attendant and he said he sells about 12 a week to those lucky enough to notice the failure.for those who do not notice this, it is a time bomb.the parts attendant told me i would be back soon to replace more. What he said is true.

First off, my airbag light would come on and then the gauges would shut down.i took the jeep in once, they said they didn't see any problems and couldn't fix it if they didn't see it.next, i was driving the jeep, had stopped to get gas, then started to drive and suddenly, the jeep no longer would move.there was a horrible smell, and i had to have the vehicle towed at 9 p.m, 6 hours from home.the vehicle is still in the shop, and i don't know when they'll be through with it!!

Dealer built transmission 2 times and it's going in fore the 3rd time on9/11/01 whats the problem ( chrysler ?).

See attached letter to daimerchrysler - will be sent via mail. No safety defect listed.

Problems with the transmission staying in gear---finally the jeep just stopped---replaced transmission

When the vehicle is shifted into gear it will not go all the way into gear.also, there isa clunking noise, the gears mesh together improperly.the dealer has been notified.owner has notified the manufacturer.

Transmission pan failed causing leak on two occasions.

Automatic transmission failed, consumer states a rebuilt transmission was installed.

The contact owns a 1998 jeep wrangler. While driving approximately 15 mph, the contact heard a loud rattling noise underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the catalytic converter was replaced.recently, the contact discovered a voluntary recall issued by the manufacturer pertaining to the power train control module. The contact was displeased to know the vin was not included in the recall and ineligible for reimbursement for the prior repair. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000. The consumer stated the exhaust manifold cracked on two separate occasions and had to be replaced.

The consumer state the his son had a problem with the transmission staying in gear.the consumer(s) are requesting to be reimbursed for the repair costs.scc

The vehicle was in park, when all of a sudden it rolled backwards and caused an accident. *mr

Car was in park with emergency brake partially on. Engine was running. Passenger got out and car rolled backwards crashing into a buidling smashing the walls and windows.

While vehicle was in park it jumped out of gear, during idling and started accelerating in reverse, vehicle moved 20 feet before consumer was able to stop all movement.no determination has been made as to the cause of this problem.consumer stated the vehicle was parked, and she stepped out briefly with door opened, there was a popping sound and vehicle accelerated into reverse at high idle.

The jeep was in park when i got out to mail a letter.i left my drivers side door open.the jeep slipped out of park and knocked me down.next , the open door smashed our mailbox into me. The jeep proceeded up the street, where i collected myself and ran after it.fortunately, i was able to jump in and stop it, and no one was behind me.the door was completely wrapped around to the quarter panel because of hitting the mailbox.

The clutch stopped working while the vehicle was in motion. There are numerous technical bulletins that describe this as a continous problem for this vehicle. Please look into it before there is a serious accident.

Consumerwas traveling about 70mph andheardloud noise, andback inlifted up. Front had dropped, anddriveshaft was defective. Had it towed to dealership, and mechanic told him that crankshaft needed to be replaced. I consumer states drive shaft bounced off of street and hit floor board ripping hole in floor next to driver's foot.

While driving 65mph, heard what sounded like a bomb had blown up under vehicle. Heard metal against metal rattling & then a loud bang. Vehicle stopped completely on highway. Had vehicle towed to dealer. Was informed by mechanic that the drivetrain had exploded. The dealership refused to repair due to not being under warranty.

Transmission grinds gears when engaging second gear on acceleration.

My wife was shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and the stick shift separated from the transmission.this vehicle has never been driven off road or hard.when we called jim marsh jeep my wife told them the stick shift came off and the person said "you must have a wrangler".this has to be more than an isolated incedent.had we been 4 wheeling some where it could have been a bad accident.

Waterleaks on passenger side, dealer can not fix.....gears grind going from 1st to 2nd...airbag light comes on, intsrument panel fails, dealer has fixed once

When sifting from 1st to 2nd gear, the transmission either grinds the gears or is difficult to get into gear.this is especially a problem when attempting to accelerate, and cannot because of difficulty shifting gears.

The transfer case is broken.nlm

Seat belts do not grab when pulled rapidly, most of the time.the centrifugal pawls seem to not be freely moving outward and holding the belt from freely playing out, when they should.i made the test while parked with engine running and off, and also while in motion.

The contact owns a 1998 jeep wrangler. The contact stated that the seat belt was secured and upon taking the seat belt off it did not retract at random. The front drivers seat shoulder belt turning loop became stuck between the door frame and the seat on multiple occasions making it difficult for the door to close properly. The contact had to manually retract the seat belt in order to close the drivers side door. The seat and metal framing was also worn. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the contact was not included in nhtsa campaign id number:98v048000 (seat belts) due to the statute of the time frame for the recall repairs. There was also a leak behind the dashboard that had leaked into the floor mats on the front drivers side and front passengers side of the vehicle. The authorized dealer was not able to replicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 200.

Seat belts hang in the way of the door when exiting the vehicle, causing them the be damaged by the door and latching mechanism.this weakens the seat belt and could cause seat belt failure, and subsequently unrestrained passagers in the event of a collision.

Vehicle has been in for repair three occassions for air bag repair and waiting for parts on last repair, however during accident during waiting period vehicle experienced no deployment of air bag and seat belt failure resulting in head injury to driver.

2/10/98 - 1046miles: rear window leaked, and both brakelight housings leaked. The radio also stopped working.7/30/98 8988 miles: the air bag light came on, and the speedometer, odometer, and tachometer stopped working. 12/30/98 15,000 miles - front drivers side seatbelt stopped retracting.

Passenger seat belt fails to retract, also gets caught in door jam.. Exhaust manifold cracked. Water leaks inside onto passenger floor board. Gauges fail/airbag light comes on. Catylist converter failed. Throtle postioning sensor failed. These incidents have appeared over the past 6-12 months.

The contact owns a 1998 jeep wrangler. The contact stated that the driver side seat belt would not retract in colder weather. He would have to manually push the belt back into the retractor to get it to operate correctly. The dealer advised there were no related recalls and the vehicle repairs would be at the contact's expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000 and the current mileage was 150,000.

Passenger's seatbelt will not pull out.

Gen3 seatbelts in my 1998 jeep wrangler do not retract properly.either they don't retract enough, causing them to be caught in the door (thus fraying the belt), or they retract too much and won't release, preventing me from using the belt.this is an ongoing problem which i have noticed from the day i bought the vehicle.

The vehicle was purchased from the dealership without a back seat.the dealer promised to place the seat in the vehicle before the consumer signed the purchase agreement, but the consumer pleaded for ten months, then theback seat was installed, but without seat belts.the dealership would not install the seat belts.the dealer asked the vehicle owner to go to the salvage yard and cut off the seat belts from any vehicle and install them himself.*scc

Loss of instrument panel needs to be fixed by the manufacturer regardless of in or out of warranty. Loss of gauges is a driving distraction and can result in an accident. Jeep needs to address this manufacturing defect as long as this vehicle is on the road.

I have a 1998 jeep wrangler. I've owned my jeep for 15 years. It has been garage kept. We were changing the shocks a few weeks ago and noticed severe rust damage. The frame is rusting from the inside out. It's severe. Years before i was traveling down a 2 land rd and had to press my brakes harder than i usually would due to a car pulling out in front of me. At that moment i blew a brake line. I could not get my vehicle stopped. Luckily it's a 5 speed. I geared down as fast as i could and managed to pull it off the main road onto a hill to get it stopped. After inspecting my vehicle i found severe damage. The motors mounts are barely there. The part where the frame mounts to the body is actually missing one due to rusting completely out. Every single bolt and nut is rusted. Every single square inch of the frame is rusted. The problem is that jeep poorly designed the frame with side holes for water and dirt to enter but did not design it with drainage holes on the bottom of the frame. Water and dirt enter and never leave. It's extremely unsafe to drive. I've read thousands of complaints online and this is a very common problem.

Emergency braking from 60-62 mph on wet pavement resulted in rear of vehicle to begin sliding around to the left.the four sheel abs system had previously been checked following a tire lock-up during emergency braking on dry pavement.dealer performed drb test and check for codes, none found and abs operating at this time.dealer agreed that abs equipped vehicle shouldn't respond in this fashion.owner requested follow-up by chrysler regional representative.

While going in reverserear brakes din't lock up. Dealer said brakes were out of adjustment.brand new hubs & brake shoes, and it changed nothing.

Dt:no rear brakes and the front brakes locked up. The trouble takes placemostly when it snows or when it is slippery.the back brakes have never worked. Dealerchanged everything in the brake system, except the master cylinder. Inspector from jeep came ,. And worked on it. Then, theysaid the nature of the beast wasnot tohave any rear brakes. Parts that were changed included three sets of brake shoes/two rear brake drums/two sets of rear wheel cylinders, proportional valve/abs computer for brake system, andtwo brake lines.

Experienced wheel lock-up during a panic stop from 60 mph on dry pavement.dealer tested abs system with drbiii.no problems found.infomed consumer that drum brakes will perform differently than front abs brakes.rear wheels will lock and unlock when abs is activated.with rear wheel drive and short wheel base, vehicle will feel as though it is skidding when it is not.this is a normal condition of this vehicle, no fix attempted.

I was approaching a red light and approximately 3 car lengths away from the vehicle already stopped at the light i began braking and heard a noise under the floor board and while pushing the brake pedal all the way down and the braking system did not slow or stop the vehicle at all. I lifted the brake pedal from the floor and reapplied it and the vehicle did not slow down or stop until it ran into the back of the other vehicle. Upon impact the vehicle began to idle up really high as if it were trying to drive itself. I took my foot off the break pedal and after i placed the vehicle in park and pulled the emergency break the vehicle stopped idling up high.

Brake fluid reservoir cap leaks brake fluid, making it impossible to maintain brake fluid at the design level.dealership provided me with a new cap which also leaked.this could cause a loss of brake fluid and a loss of brakes.

Brakes had fallen out, consumer was unable to stop.

The rear brakes don't provide any stopping assistance, the front brakes lock up on gravel and the rear wheels never slide or provide any stopping power. When you back up on gravel or any slick surface the front wheels always slide even on level ground. When backing down a hill on gravel or a slick surface the jeep wont stop unless i use the hand brake along with the brakes. I have tested this on several occasions and it is the same each time. The dealer just says they are adjusted to factory specifications. The rear brakes provide little or no stopping power!

The rear brakes provide no stopping assistance. When you back up on any surface and apply the brakes the front brakes [disc] lock up and the back wheels just keep rolling. They provide no stopping assistance at all.

When brakes are applied, the front brakes lock up,but the rear wheels continue to turn, which is extremely hazardous during slippery conditions.dealer has tried to correct problem by replacing drums and valve, but that did not cure the problem.they have now ordered a new master cylinder.we are hoping that the master cylinder cures the problem, but are concerned that other people may not realize that there rear brakes are not functioning properly.

Front brakes / rotors / brake pads experienced failure.

Drum will not keep its shape. Dealer nofitied.

Death wobble, front end shakes violently at higher freeway speeds.very fearful to drive on other than streets. Has happened several times the last 2 years.purchased jeep used 5 years ago but only started to have wobble last 2 years since im retired and don't drive long distances very often and not don't want to drive anywhere that requires me to use freeways.

While applying the brake, vehicle will lose control due to a faulty sway bar holder or the tie rod. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information.ph

While driving on rt 84 in new york state steering went out causeing the jeep to be thrown across three lanes of the interstate.the jeep then rolled over down the medium strip. Driver was ejected from jeep the other three passengers remianed in jeep sustianing bruises. Airgags never deployed while jeep was rolling over.

Jeep death wobble. Scary!

Ongoing problem with steering column making scraping noiss. Vehicle benn in / out of dealer shop on several occasions before they replaced steering column. Less then three months later, problem reoccurred. Consumer believed that the dealer would replace it with another defective part, and if so, how long would they do this until warranty ran out. If so, what would happen? ! can nhtsa help with this matter before this occur and provide additional information on this matter.

When driving at any speed and going over a bump, the steering wheel is vibrating and there is some knocking noise coming from the vehicle. Consumer feels the design of the steering wheel and column mechanism does not fit correctly causing loose fitting. Ak

Clock spring in steering column shorted out also, engine controller, and horn failure.also air bag and cruise control lights came on.

Vehicle makes noise when shifting from second to third gear and from third to fourth.the noise is most prevalent when first shifted and disappears as the speed increases.it sounds like vibrating tin.another noise occurs when slowing down, a whirling sound like a whistle.the noises are not random. They happen every time.

After applying brakes on rainslick road vehicle hydroplaned into the rearend of a pickup. I hit the steering wheel twice before the seatbelt 'caught'.... 2 broken teeth, brain trauma & concussion, mangled spine/surgery pending. First accident. No one will claim liability for the seatbelt not working and the airbag has been treated as a non-issue. My jeep has been 'repaired' sans seatbelt.... Daimler-chrysler investigation pending. All i asked, in the beginning, was for my seatbelt to be replaced... Not too much to ask.... Now i will fight as my quality of life has been compromised permanently and i should not have to argue over a defective seatbelt being replaced... At the very least! i am severely injured and quite frankly am angry, now, that i have to fight for what is 'right'. Please feel free to contact me at any time as my life is now homebased with the exception of numerous doctor visits.

Power steering pump failed.

Will need to return to dealer for the second time regarding instruments/airbag light problem, and 3rd time for steering column problem

While driving in third gear, the vehicle suddenly swinged to the left then to the right causing the driver to loose control and roll over.

I have a 1998 jeep wrangler. The paint on the side mirrors & the back window hinges are chipping. Not to mention the fenders front & rear are fadded. They were once black & are now grey. I have noticed that the many jeeps out on the road are having the same problem. I hope someone is checking into this matter. Gm should do a recall & fix the problem!

Water leak in passenger compartment. I finally had to remove right side floor carpeting and glove box cover and show the dealer where the body was leaking. I had the wrangler to two different dealers for this problem. Each dealer charged me $100.00 to fix the problem. Problem one was a lower windshield seal. Problem 2 was to re-seal behind the heater which is being done at this time. Service manager said he would talk to chrysler about replacing carpet on right side which by now will not match left side and they will probably not pay for it. I have been without my transportation for several days on and off because of the leak and their inability to find this leak. There policy on rental cars is if they can't fix the car in the first 24 hours they will give you a rental car. They send you home car-less to wait for the call as to when your car will be ready. They have had my car for 3 days now and i am the only one who calls them to find out when my car will be ready. In the past i have purchased a number of chrysler products. When i sell the wrangler and durango, my chrysler days are over. While i believe their cars and trucks are almost as good as most american products today, trying to work with the dealers is almost impossible. I think they have a terrible dealer network.

Under body fire on vehicle after driving unimproved road in brush. Debris packed into skid plate under transfer case and caught fire. Redesign of skid plate is necessary to prevent the fire situation.

The frame around the control arms are rusting, this could be a serious problem that needs addressed and there are more 97-06 wranglers with rusted frames than not.

I have an excessive amount of frame rust and my vehicle has less than 150xxx miles and this is a severe safety hazard. I have read that there are many people who have experienced this and i am wanting to know what you guys could do to resolve this issue. I bought this vehicle and i do not want to resale because i do not want to sell it in this condition and i want to keep it buti also do not want to drive because of this. There's a lot of life left in this vehicle and it only has 126xxx miles so i need help

I am writing today to complain about my 1998 jeep wrangler.after my last service was performed, the mechanic illustrated to me that the frame on my jeep was severely rotting away on the drivers side.this is not an unknown concern for me since my employer has had the same concern repaired on one of his family members jeep.this is very disheartening to me since i have been a jeep owner for many years.i contacted chrysler customer service and according to the operator they are not familiar with this problem.i find this unbelievable, considering that i am not the only one with this concern and other vehicle manufactures have recalled their vehicles for similar frame rot problems.ie toyota pickup trucks, ford windstar minivans, and i am sure there are others.i am having this jeep fixed but it is going to be a costly repair, and it is unfortunate that at this time i can't afford to purchase another vehicle.i have pictures of the affected areas on my frame that i can forward to you if you need to see these for your investigation.thanksa very concerned jeep owner

Takata recallreporting this in hopes of having the issue resolved by nhtsa or chrysler...i have a 1998 jeep wrangler and like thousands of others, mine has developed major frame rust. I know this isnt going to be resolved anytime soon, but i need to get mine fixed now. Hopefully if there is ever a recall i can still be apart of it even after mine is repaired. Im going to be having it patched for now as a frame replacement will cost way too much for me at the moment. Myself, along with many others would greatly benifit from this being recalled. There are a lot of jeeps out there driving on repaired frames. This issue should be resolved being as there are so many with the exact same problem.

Had to replace the frame due to left rear rusted through the whole frame, just a small amount of the frame was left. Other areas had rust eating threw the frame, and in a matter of time would have failed!!!.

Was told by my mechanic frame is rusting from the inside out, and the frame will fail in the near future. I understand this is a on going problem with jeep wranglers of multiple years due to the fact there were never drain holes providing drainage for the water, also lack of any rust coating to the inside of frame. In penn. You can not sell a car with frame damage. I'm not sure what i'm going to do.i feel that jeep should help with the repair or replacement of the frame.

Jeep wrangler frames rust from inside out due to moisture getting in through upper part of frames where their are holes and settling to lower part of frame where their areno drain holes. Their may have not been an issue if jeep had just put in drain holes in lower part of frame. It is a common problem in 1997 through 2006 jeep wranglers. I have this issue.

The frame is rotten out, and this is a common problem with the jeep tj's.i have a hole on my tail section of frame and on the rear control arm area.

The rust is so bad on the jeeps it's ridiculous it's not safe your going to kill someone when there rear axle shoots out from under them this is a issue you should fix not the consumer i will not be buying this product again if it is my fixed. 98 tj jeep wrangler

Due to excessive rot that is common on this vehicle, while traveling i hit a bump and snapped my driver side control arm.this consequently made for a dangerous ride.while attempting to repair it i noticed how bad the frame was rotted, but unlike normal circumstances where the outside and inside would have equal corrosion.the inside wasrotted much worse, and parts of the frame easily crumbled.

First incident was the drivers side area under the dashboard filling with at least two inches of water that had to be drained. All windows and hoods were up and secure in both instances. Second complaint while driving the air bag light came on and all guages dropped to zero while driving at 55 mph.

Noticed a noise while driving home the other day thought it may have been my exhaust rattling around, so i got under vehicle to inspect the noise, and what i found was that the rear part of the frame has rusted away and the brackets for the rear trailing arms had detached from the frame allowing the arms to drop, and on this particular side the brake lines are attached to this control arm.i know that toyota had a similar recall on the truck frames for rust perforation, and that jeep had one on the liberty for the rear lower control arms rusting and breaking.i am an automotive technician and my personal jeep is not the first one i have seen with this potentially dangerous condition.i also googled this problem and found that its very common in these vehicles as well.

The welding of the vehicle causedwater to leak under the dash, which damaged the electrical system. May have caused damage to the air bag system also. The dealer has been notified about the problem. Replcementpart, plastic water deslectormelted, causing a fire.

Vehicle is leaning because the frame in bent and does not meet specificatons.

Purchased a used 1998 jeep wrangler sport on december 27 2014.had it in a shop for new tires when they told me the frame was rotted and it was unsafe to drive.the dealership i bought it from inspected it and sure enough, rotted frame and unsafe to drive.they agreed to pay 1700 dollars towards the cost of a frame swap and it cost me 1000 dollars more for a total of 2700 dollars.this seems to bea real issue with jeeps between the years of 97 to 04, i may be wrong on the exact years but there is a definite pattern of bad manufacturing practices/bad quality steel to be contributing to this frame rot.is chrysler waiting for someone to get killed in order to address this issue?big corporations and politics meet to screw the general public once again?chrysler, take a lesson from toyota and fix these frames before someone gets killed going down the highway at 65 mph and their frame breaks.my jeep was totally bone stock when this was discovered.i'm not trying to get a dollar back for what i paid, just trying to bring awareness to this as have many others.jeepers lover their jeeps no doubt and are very loyal to the brand.chrysler should recognize this and do the right thing.i hope many more come forward and steps are taken to right this wrong before someone gets killed.chrysler can blame it on road salt or sea air or whatever, but there are other auto manufacturers with cars still on the road from the 60's and 70's and earlier eras with no frame problems at all.big corporations hide behind bad politics and they work hand in hand to not take blame for things like this.one of many problems with politics in america.

"tj wrangler frame rust" - severe rust occurred in the frame of my 1998 jeep wrangler.vehicle would no longer pass pa state inspection.rust was due to no drainage hole and frame rusted from inside out.rust occurred on both driver and passenger sides just in front of the rear control arms and extended front to the transfer case mounting points.i have researched this issue and it is very common and many poor jeep owners are parting out perfectly good jeeps due to them not being able to pass state inspections - luckily no one has been harmed due to this frame damage that i am aware of - some videos on the internet show the entire frame rusted away!this needs to be brought to the attention of jeep as this is obvious a design flaw and owners should be compensated.if there is any doubt of how severe this is simple do a google search!toyota took care of their customers!!!

Vehicle leans on one side more thanon the other.dealer has inspected the suspension ,improper adjustment of the body mounts causing tilting.

Jeep death wobble. Scary!

The frame is rotten out, and this is a common problem with the jeep tj's.i have a hole on my tail section of frame and on the rear control arm area.

The rust is so bad on the jeeps it's ridiculous it's not safe your going to kill someone when there rear axle shoots out from under them this is a issue you should fix not the consumer i will not be buying this product again if it is my fixed. 98 tj jeep wrangler

Rust has eaten completely through jeep frame in rear support area through about midway of the door section. This is not minor surface rust, but large gaping holes that i can put my whole hand inside of. The jeep was purchased new in 1998 andhas never been offroad. It has very low highway mileage and is in an area where the winters are mild, so there's not a lot of road salt used during the winters here. It has been maintained and has been well taken care of. I had recently taken it to a fabrication shop to see if it could be repaired, and after examination the shop owner said there is no solid metal left in the frame for a repair to be possible. He said there are no drain holes on bottom of the jeep frame, but only holes that the manufacturer put on the side of the frame. He said, as a result road grime entered the frame from these manufactured side holes, got trapped inside the frame and caused it to rust from the inside out. He said that is why i had not detected the severity of the rust problem before now. The shop owner put his hand inside the frame and pulled out a handful of moist road grime and loose rust flakes to further illustrate the problem. The shop owner went on to inform me that my jeep is not safe to drive. In stark contrast, the underside of the body of the jeep has absolutely no rust at all.

Due to the design ofsuspension it is rubbing againstradiator hose, puncturing the hose which caused a leak. Consumer has contacteddealer. Please provide any further details.

Consumer was traveling 60mph onhighway and there was a loud bang.then, vehicle veered toleft. A clicking noisecame about afterincident.dealershipwas aware ofproblem.

Jeep tj frame separated at the torsion bar on passenger rear wheel making vehicle unstable and un- usable.

While driving at approximately 60mphhit a bump in the road, where they were doing road work, front end vibrated uncontrollably, even lost control after deceleration. Problem still occurs.

We have had numerous problems with this vehicle all pretaining to the front end,the steering wheel will start shaking really bad at between 40-50 mph and we have had loud banking noice come from the front end and when shifting.the tires have had to be replaced 4 times beforethey even had 9,000 miles on them.the vehicle is a real lemon.there has been many problems with the paint peeling as well as problems with the ball joints. They are now refusing to fix the front end again that we have had problems with since we bought it.

Vehicle loses control on highway at speeds over 60mph on occasions when there is a medium wind. Vehicle will move from side to side and feel like its about to flip over.

Control arm bracket snapped. Consumer stated that the right control arm bracket snapped off and left control arm bracket twisted causing the vehicle to swerve and ran off of the road.

Driver lost control of the steering due to a malfunction of the u boltthat caused the i beam to break. Driver ran into a truck. Dealer has not seen vehicle.

Vehicle sways at+55mph due to premature failure of sway bar links.

This is now the 3rd sway bar end-link i've replaced on my jeep, and the 2nd i've replaced on my friend's 97 jeep wrangler. I asked my mechanic about this and he told me he gets this problem all the time. How can such wide spread failure of an important saftey item like the swaybar end link escape being part of a recall. My jeep has failed the pennsylvania safety inspection for two years now because of this problem. In the fall of 2002 while making an sudden evasive manuver, my jeep handled the situation so poorly that i ended up crashing the vehicle. I found, during repair, that the swaybar end-link was not in working order.

While traveling instrument panel flashed on/off, all gauges fail to work. Manufacturer has been notified.*ml

Oil pressure gauge.

My frame is rotting out fast and furious, i've already had to replace sections, the upper and lower controls arms have ripped off, the body fell threw the mounts, paid to have that fixed

I am in canada, however this information appilies to all wranglers and your reply by phone would be appreciated.the front seat belt, in itsunused, resting state with no passengers, overlaps the dorr striker/ latch mechanism.if you close the door on the vehicle, you slam the seat belt in the mechanism and tear holes in the seat belt.it if the same for both of the front seat belts.i have informed the dealer, who has not yet replaced the seat belts, which are now torn, as they would get torn again the second you closed the door. This is a very very major safety defect, and it is amazing that it has acutally happened.please look into it.. I wanted to let you know because i think that the dealer will cover it up and people will definetly get hurt from this.i know that i'm in canada, but please call me anyways, collect if you have to.also, don't give my name to jeep... I don't want them to somehow blacklist me...just go and take a look at any new wrangler and you'll be surprised.thanks

Air bag light comes on. The dash and the gauges (speedometer, rpm, etc.) stopped working. Dealer contacted to repair work, problem still exists.

When all the gauges in the vehicle go out while driving, the driver's side air bag light would come on. Has taken vehicle to dealer & was informedthey know about problem. Manufacturer is said to be working on solution. Owner is police officer & is in violation because ofthis particular problem.

Design flaw which allows water in but not out causes water and dirt to collect inside of chassis frame, causing it to rust from the inside out.

On my 1998 jeep wrangler sport, chrysler put a hole in the frame to access the rear sway arm bolt and when they did that it let water , dirt, salt etc into the frame and cause the frame to rot from the inside out. I have researchedthe problem and many peopleseem to have the same one i want to put the word out to have it fix because if it was to break while driving your jeep it can cost someone there life. Mine has yet to do so because i seen it in time and want something done about it a recall is needed to fix the problem

While replacing shocks i found multiple rot spots in the frame of the jeep. These rot spots were so badly rotted that i could poke through with my index finger with minimal force. Had to send it to a repair shop to repair the frame in multiple locations.

Clock spring in steering column shorted out also, engine controller, and horn failure.also air bag and cruise control lights came on.

While using cruise control speed increased and wouldnotrespond to shutting off speed control or by hitting the brakes carcould not be stopped only pushing in clutch while the engine raced uncontrollably and pulling off the interstate onto side of road turning off key stopped this . When started back up engine still racing.same thing happened about seven years ago never used speed control again until this

The contact owns a 1998 jeep wrangler. While driving at an unknown speed, the speedometer failed to display the speed intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,000.

I was approaching a stop light, two cars were already at full stop, i applied the brakes and my car came to a complete stop approxametely 10 feet behind the car in front of me. All the sudden my engine started like my foot is on gas instead of the brakes, i pushed on the breaks as hard as i can without any response, i hit the car in front of me. This is the first time that it happen. I drove the car this afternoon, it is driving fine. I went to a parking lot and i applied the breaks then pushed gas at the same time, the car did not move. My breaks are fine. I don't know what happen and why it happened, but i know for a fact that my breaks ewre fully applied, and the car was at a complete stop before it moved on its own. Skid marks were visible, but the car kept moving.

Each time i am on the highway and anywhere within any vicinity behind a truck and any size of debris is thrown up on my windshield....it causes a break. Each time it has broken....this size of rock or debris has been hardly visible to the eye.the very last time was a tiny piece of asphalt and it left the biggest break of all. There is obviously some type of default in the windshield for it to break so easily.i am curious as if there are any other individuals having the same problems. I have spoken with many individuals with jeeps and none have expierenced this type of difficulty.

The windshield wipersleave a black residue on the windshield. The windshield wipers were replaced, but the problem continues. The dealer/ manufacturer is not able to correct the problem.

Airbag light speedometer and ram gauge fail due to water entered the dash below the windshield.the leak is a common seal failure, whidshield is capable of laying flat and the seal does not work, it appears to cause water damage.

Jeep sahara 2002, corrosion in wheel lugnut holes.the clear coat on the wheelt separated causing moisture to settle between the alluminum and clear coat.

Design of the wheels cause snow and water to get between the face of the rim and the inner rim and sometimes freeze in one spot causing severe vibration as it makes the wheels out of balance.

All five lug nuts came off, resulting in wheel separating from vehicle, and massive damgage to lft front brake system.
