At 9773 miles air bag light came on and all gauges including speedometer and tachometer showed zero. When vehicle hits bump while driving, gagues come back only to eventually read zero again.ongoing problem since july 1998 and dealer cannot fix problem. Been to dealer 8 times since initial problem, and still have same problem as of april 1999. Need some assistance for this problem since dealer is no help at all.everytime they fix problem, happens a couple of months later again.

Vehicle slid on ice/ lost control, and hit a boulder head-on.then rolled over. Dual airbags did not deploy which could have caused injuries.

Fell a sleep and ran off the road, the jeep rolled over and flipped over on front and back, driver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy, driver sustained injuries.

Vehicle was driven directly into a small concrete post.bumber was forced back causing engine and frame damage.driver head struck windshield of vehicle.driver (complainant) was operating vehicle in a parking lot and had not placed seat belt on at time of crash.face went into windshield breaking windshield and compl. Nose.it was opinion of police, dealership personnel, and others that the airbag should have deployed with such a severe front end crash.daimlerchrysler was written to and a subject met comp at dealership and took computer readings of vehicle.no analysis was given to compl except for written correspondance from daimler chrysler (a.l. Gilbert -special investigator) that the vehicle did not strike the appropriate "crush" and "crunch" zones to operate airbag.we cannot believe that a front end impact into a pole with 8000 damage and the drivers face hitting and breaking the windshield is not enough of an impact to cause the airbag to deploy.we have written daimlerchrysler twice asking for the readings from the computer and no one will respond.we also still do not know if the airbag will deploy if another accident occurs with the front end.we would also be interested in other jeep owners with similar experiences as to hope and remedy a possible fatal accident because of the airbag not deploying on jeep products.

Driving 55mph, ran off road into an embankment during crash 10:00 on front bumper, vehicle rolled three times, dual airbags failed to deploy, driver sustained severe head and chest injuries, then died.

No deployment of driver's/passenger's air bags during accident resulted in one fatality and injury.

I am the original owner of a 1997 jeep wrangler, vin 1j4fy19s2vp52606. Recently, i turned the steering wheel fully in one direction (i don't recall if it was clockwise or counterclockwise), and heard a snap somewhere in the steering wheel or steering column. The airbag warning light came on (and has been on ever since), and the horn no longer works. I contacted chrysler, and was told that my particular vehicle is not involved in any of the airbag recalls for the '97 wrangler. However, it seems a bit of a coincidence that the symptoms described above match those described for the '97 wrangler nhtsa campaign id number 98v046000 - "driver's side air bag clock spring wiring harness can break when turned to the full lock turn position" *** recall notice - "a broken clockspring will also cause the horn to become inoperative. The airbag warning light will stay on if the clockspring breaks." the parts are currently still available, but i hesitate waiting very long before having this broken part replaced.

No deployment of air bags in accident.

Contacted chrysler concerning my problems, and they stated that they cannot do anything for me.when i called about my airbags the first time, i was told i would be sent arbitration paperwork and never was.when i called back, i was told that an inspector should have gone out to look at my car before it was repaired and that it was "too late now" to do anything.i was never told that an inspector or anyone else could be involved when i first contacted chrysler.i am furious and frustrated and need help with this serious issue.

Horn doesn't work and airbag light is on.showing that the airbags were inoperable as well.

Ron ford reports that the steering makes a loud noise and vehiclegoes straight ahead when trying to make a turn, vehicle would not turn. Dealer contacted, and no attempts made to remedy the problem. Right after i bought the jeep i started having problems but when i called the owner he said its a buy as is, no warranty, he didn't offer to help with anything and being disabled i had no other choice but to get engine fixed, transmission, clutch, the entire electric system, no ac, no heat or defrost either all these things i fixed but now again in 2020 i still have no heat, no defrost, jeep is in yard not running and i still owe right at 900 on the jeep, the owner has been very rude, made threats, and now not taking my final 3 pymts on jeep, never been late, ever!!!! he runs a shady buy here pay here lot and i have a top mechanic that left his business to vouch for the odometer tampering as well as having the mechanic to fix all the lights on panel that showed engine running hot, he told the mechanic to fix it or he was not getting his pay check, i have the mechanics statement and he will testify in person. I have several employees that have since quite to vouch he sold lemons, and salvaged cars. He lost his dmv license but still continues to fraud people.

While driving vehicl clock spriing broke, and horn malfunctioned.please provide further information.

Horn doesn't work and airbag light is on.showing that the airbags were inoperable as well.

Athighway speeds vehicle lost power.will jerk really hard, and pressing on accelerater has no affect.dealer replaced fuel rail, and a week later problem reoccured.

Computer/front brake rotors and engine oil filter failed.

Chrysler states that environmental laws will not allow them to replace the computer in my jeep which is the problem. Dangerous driving into traffic and i don't get any gas, just sputters.almost been rear-ended countless times in the past 13 months. Please help!

When starting vehicle sometimes the starter engages.this happens while driving and stiffing from one gear to another.driver has to pull the relay switch before the vehicle will stop. Th key will turn off the vehicle, but the starter is still engaging. This has been an on going problem for about one year and a half. The vehicle was taken to the dealership on november 19, 1999 for this problem.dealer not sure what is causing this problem.please provide any further information.

Probable faulty connection at ignition switch - problem persists.

Engine harness bad in vehicle.vehicle has been to dealer for lots of problems since new.the latest is the harness problem.the vehicle has been to the dealer 4 times, and is at present time is still at dealer.they have had it going on three weeks now.no one can find the proper parts or acorrect way of fixing it.i have contacted chrysler more times then i care to recall, but still the same answer that they are trying everything to fix the problem.this last time 2 wires in engine harness melted,i feel that the vehicle is unsafe and unreliable.if you can help in anyway i would greatly appreciate it,thank you james haven.

I bought my 1997 jeep wrangler in june, 2002 from a used car dealer in baltimore, md with an as-is warranty and was told the vehicle had passed inspection and was in good condition.it had 64,000 miles on it and appeared to be good.since then i have had nothing but problems with this jeep.first the wiring harness, then the transmission, now a diagnosis to replace the intake and exhaust manifold, replaced fuel pump and has a faulty fuel gauge, and possibly the stabilizer bar or steering components.this jeep is costing me more in repairs than the actual value of it.i fear that it is unsafe and that i m facing more expenses if i keep it, but i am still making payments on it.do i have any recourse as far as lemon law protection, recalls, help!!!i don't know what to do with it.

Instrument panel: all instrument panel gauges are driven by a microprocessor, such that it tells the panel what the gauges should read. When the instrument panel cpu fails, all gauges; fuel/temp/oil/volt and tachometer, speedometer an d odometer) fail simultaneously. This is disconcerting at best, highly dangerous (say if one were on a freeway) at worst. Also, transmission: the 5-speed transmission used with the 4.0l has major problems shifting into second when cold. Jeep's answer for years has been "they all do that"yet they have continued to use the same transmission and have no fixed for the problem to this date.

When cold, jeep starts and runs fine. After engine warms up, oil pressure would drop and jeep would almost die. If i shut it off and try to restart while still warm, jeep would have a hard time starting and if it did start, it would idle extremely rough and barely accelerate. Once i got speed up, it ran fine until i stopped at a red light and it would act like it was going to die and the oil pressure gauge would bottom out. Dealer put manual gauges on it and determined it was the oil sending unit. Oil pressure now holds at 20 when at idle. The issue with the rough idle and loss of power still persists after the engine warms up. After reading all of the complaints, this seems to be a recurring issue with this model. Really don't want to waste money trying to guess at what is the issue. As many people that there are having similar issues, jeep should stand behind their product and issue a recall. Very disappointed.

Engine cooling system overheating, oil sensor gauge drops to zero, causing checking engine light to come on,in for repair 4 times.

My radiator has rotted out, including part of the core, this has never happened with any vehicle i've ever owned, i've lived and driven in the same conditions for my whole life.

All three failures have taken place in the last three months. The latest being the catalytic converter. Have there been other failures reported.

Freeze plug cracked on perfect day of 70 degrees. Engine coolant lost.this happened in a parking lot - 02 mph in reverse.:) if it had happened on the freeway, permenent engine damage could have occurred due to overheating and leading to seizing.

Radiator replaced due to leakage, replacement experienced leakage which is unresolved. Mjs

Radiator had to be replaced due to leaking of coolant at horizontal joint, on top of radiator. *cj

My vehicle has run rough, idling rough, "bucking", losing coolant and dripping from the tailpipe about a week after the extended warranty expired. I have had major valve train problems and had to have the camshaft replaced along with the gasket, cylinder head, core return, radiator and now the latest is oil pressure gauge sending unit. Oil pressure still showing zero even after replacing sending unit!

Radiator leaking at top where plastic expansion tank & copper finned section are joined. Bonding failure due to poor or defective sealing method between dissimilar materials. Never had radiator replaced under normal operating conditions on 3 yr. Old vehicle.

Replaced radiator and still have leaks coming from somewhere.letters sent to head office and dealership.

Clutch, flywheel all related parts failed, water leaking on passenger side floor, clock and radio broke dealer cant fix, seat belts wont retract, sway bars come loose

Catalytic converter went prior to30,000 miles, had to be replaced ! gasket cracked at only 37.500 miles, leaking water into engine, had to be replaced.car has only 37.500 highway miles !!!

Multiple failures since september, 1998. After warm-up, then 20 minute cool -down, car will not accelerate, backfires andoff to nothing, then catches and goes. Have replaced fuel pump, engine crank sensor and $700 tuneup done- no luck

While driving lost oil pressure and vehicle started smoking. Vehicle caught on fire, and the consumer extinguished the fire with a fireextinguisher.the manufacturer has been contacted.oil was squirting out of the tope of the oil pressure sensor and running back on the catalytic converter, sensor failure and leakage caused fire.

Oil filter design is located in a very awkward place, exhaust pipe is just below filter and starter solenoid wires very close, resulting in damage to filter when wrench became intangled into starter solenoid wires.mjs

Computer/front brake rotors and engine oil filter failed.

In the morning the vehicle would backfire andwhen the vehicle is driven after it sits for 20 minutes.now the dealer has replaced a exhaust manifold /catalytic converter/tps sensor/air intake housing,a broken stud in the exhaust manifold to head assembly, this has been going on for the past year and i get the same reply i can't find the problem or it's in the computer.this was all taken care off,but the problem still exsists. I've talked ato a lawyer and he couldn't help me. Maybe you can as this does cause a flame to come out of the intake. And now it's getting worse now it's when i'm driving down the road a 25 - 30 mph. What can i do? please help, scared to drive it might explode the engine while i'm driving with my son or girlfriend.

When driving and coming to a stop and when taking off the vehicle loses all power. Dealer contacted seven times and cannot duplicate the problem.

The vehicle will experence sudden and unexpected loss of power.it will last about 5 seconds.

Rough idle;engine check light on; stalling, bucking at speed; noisey/cracked exhaust

Oil pressure guage drops to zero, warning buzzer sounds.hazardous to pull over to shoulder in traffic, stop engine.dealer reports oil pressure is fine, sender unit at fault.it's been repaired 3 times, still happens.i still feel it necessary to immediately reduce speed or stop until pressure guage reads normal to protect engine.this has caused some traffic safety issues for myself and other motorists.

Noticed oil leaking. Had the vehicle serviced at the dealer who put a new seal on. After a second seal was put on, took it to the dealer to have the torque turning checked on the rear pinion gear.was told that the bearings were all bad and needed to be replaced. Also, they had to rebuilt the rear end.*ml

Engine failure.

While driving vehicle on the highway the vehicle just stopped without any warning, the vehicle wouldn't move, had to be towed to a dealership.

Vehicle cuts off, giving no warning. Jeep has been to dealer several times for repair.

I have only included the one date i can remember that jeep was in the repair shop. But, to this date, after jeep warms up and then is shut off for approx 20 minutes, it hesitates on acceleration. Dealer said couldnt duplicate problem. Oil gauge dropped to zero, then engine knocked & i shut off. Dealer said oil pressure ok, could not duplicate prob. It still drops below 20 sometimes, but not zero again. I have had manifold bolts replaced twice and catalytic converter replaced once. Water leaks on passenger side & drivers seat belt gets caught in door latch.

Electrical short started fire in the engine compartment and destroyed the entire vehicle.

Oem part replaced 12/27/97; failed again 12/28/98; current mileage out of warranty.mfg installing defective parts as replacement parts should be required to replace.one year life of this part is unacceptable!not available after market vendors.trapped by chrysler.

For guage problem, all dash guages intermittently drop to zero and airbag light comes on.hitting a bump or top of dashboard fixes problem.for #2, oil pressure drops to zero when idling in traffic in warm weather or after long periods of highway driving.

The engine stalls while driving 50 to 60mph and everything quits. Dealer could not fix.

I was told of the proble during an oil change at monro muffler and brakes.there is already a report in your site on the problem...service bulletin number: 11-07-98 bulletin sequence number: 312 date of bulletin: 9812 nhtsa item number: sb603108.

The dealer stated this was a "design" flaw with all inline 6 cyl engines.further more, they could repair it, but it would eventually break again.everyone i have spoken with that has/had a jeep as encountered the same problem.

While driving on a logging road i hit a pothole, the resulting jolt dislodged the radiator overflow bottle.the overflow bottle fell straight down and lodged on top of the steering assembly causing me to loose control of the steering.this happened twice on the same day . In my opinion the restraining mechinisms are insufficent and dangerous. Please contact me at (360)273-3970 so i can explain in greater detail what occured.

Whenever my 97 jeep wrangler's engine is sufficiently warmed up, the oil pressure drops to under 20 psi.i have brought it to the dealer. They said it was the oil pressure sensor. When they claiimed to have fixed it, no more than a few weeks later, it started happening again.this time i tried to call them any left messages with the manager of the servive depatment . I was never contacted back about the problem. With my works schedule, it is hard for me to bring my car in all the time. Also with reports i read dealing with similar problems, i would like to rectify this problem asap.

Engine bucks, back fires and attempts to stall while accelerating resulting in near collisions.

When driving and coming to a stop andwhen pulling off the vehicle loses power and will not take off. Dealer notified seven times and cannot duplicate the problem.

Consumer complaining of vehicle stalling continually. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop from september of 1997 until present. Same condition still occurs.dealer had vehicle in shop more then five times . This condition has endangered the consumeron several occasions.

Car has a bucking and poor proformance at highway speeds up long hills, making 60mph impossible.it has been a poor highway performer, but has become "rough-missfiring" very badly 3 times in the car life. First 2 serious failures i got a engine check light, resulting in dealer visits.now the engine checklight was "fixed"it is not there, but the failure mode is.the car exhaust pipe end is quite black, dirty running?the valves and internal engine parts are very dirty and had to be cleaned or replaced when inspected the last 2 times.it happened at 5k, 12k, and now at 37k.the car is now almost 3 years old and i have had it in for other repairs totaling at least 6 times.this is more times than my last 10 year vehicle had.(not jeep)am i now out of help since it is out of warrantee at 36k?i am getting worried the car will not perform to 100k like this as it may be damaged!what is the extent of my rights now? thanks,, ss

While driving in heavy traffic at highway speedsvehicle will shutdown without warning, cause unknown. Dealer cannot identify the problem . Please give any further details.

While traveling on the highway without prior warning the vehicleshut down.the gauges malfunctioned (gas read empty), the vehicle jerked uncontrollably.different mechanics were unable to duplicate the problem.the transmission leaked (there was pink fluid in the battery area), the belt pulley had fallen off and the vehicle overheated, and the battery failed. *scc

Vehicle was making noise from muffler. Took vehicle to dealership, and mechanic stated that exhaust manifold was cracked, causing exhaust leakage and needed to be replaced. Overtime, exhaust manifold cracked into three pieces causing hot exhaust fumes in engine compatments as well as drivers area.

Rough idle;engine check light on; stalling, bucking at speed; noisey/cracked exhaust

Had heard a noise when vehicle was started, sounded like a hole in muffler. Exhaust was coming off engine. Problem got worse.2 pieces of hoses became one and joined, they cracked and nearly separated. Theywere too close to engine. Contacted manufacturer, andinformed over warranty and will not repair.

Exhaust manifold cracked/studs failed/parts,labor not covered/3rd party repaired.

Exhaust system had to be replaced because there was a hole in it.

Exhaust manifold has completely failed due to severe cracking at 54,000 mi/ although this is apparently a defect in '97 jeep exhaust manifolds (based on number of problems reported on internet and manifold has been redesigned) chrysler will provide no assistance in the repair which is over $900.

I bought this 1997 jeep wrangler from a used car dealer in june 2002 with a limited warranty and was told the vehicle pased inspection and had no problems.since then i have had to have the wiring harness repaired, the fuel pump replaced, the transmission replaced, it has a faulty fuel gauge reading, the intake and exhaust manifold need to be replaced and now the steering linkage or stabilizer bars are faulty.

The exhaust manifolds bolds are made out of alluminum, which at high temp. Will break.that is what has happened in this case.

Noticed what sounded like an exhaust leak coming from the engine compartment. I brought it to the dealer with 27k miles on it. They heard nothing. In may 2000 my mechanic mentioned a crack in the exhaust manifold. I brought it back to dealer and they said they found nothing. Oct. Of 2001 with 58k the noise was unbearable and three cracks visable. Dealer said too bad out of warranty. If so many people are having this problem why can't something be done? by the way i will never purchase another jeep again.

Exhaust header cracked at 4 locations and had to be replaced.jeep dealer said that this is a known defect and still would do nothing about it.dt

Exhaust manifold cracked 1/8" horizontally, vehicle not showing signs of overheating, dealership and two muffler shops contacted--all indicated this is a common problem with the '1997s starting around 60k miles.

The problem with the exhaust is that it is making a clicking sound at startup everytime until the engine is good and warm.after the engine is warm it will usually stop.the higher the rpm's get the faster the sound is.i have been told that it is with the manifold.the second problem is the computer.the vehicle will not hold it's idle after gas is given to the engine.it wil drop then come back up and it will sometimes almost die.

Dealer said no warrenty coverage for manifold due to mileage and age.called chrysler help line and told maybe cold water or rain got on it and agreed i should have bought extended warrenty.why isn't the manifold covered under the emission control warrenty.what is more important then getting the exhaust gas to the converter?instead it goes to the air and creates a safety problem if it gets in the passenger compartment.i see your data bank has other manifold failures alredy and service notices of head bolt maifold issues.looks like a mfg. Defect since these vehicles are so young.the fuel pump was fixed under warrenty, the car would't start right.the power steering unit continues to leak slowly and the dealer suggest a seal leaking but i have to pay to fix.great car!

The rear differential was cracked, as was the exhaust manifold. Also the crank sensor harness and the tps were melted against the manifold. The dash leaked water and the brake shoes/lining and rack and pinion set needed replacing. The drivers side seatbelt would never retract and the dash lead water extensively causing the resstr-blower to go out. The radio was also broken for a couple of months

Took jeep to dealer several times had headers replaced soon after maifold exhaust faolure. Radio replaced once, still doesn't stay on.

There seems to be a lot of complaints about this same problem. Hopw many does it take to get some action. No safety defect mentioned.

Exhaust manifold had to be replaced.there were several large cracks, luckily the problem was caught before it broke off.i still have the part if someone would like to examine it.i contacted chrysler by phone numerous times and also sent a letter with photos of the failed part.they said it's not their problem.i talked with two mechanics who told me the part was probably defective since the jeep was less than three years old at the time.i'm not sure when it actually started to fail, but a mechanic noticed it in august 1999 and that's when i had it repaired.

Daimler chrysler has been unresponsive to my requests for replacement of this part under "implied warranty" or anything else, even though the car problem websites (and yours) are full of reports of exhaust manifold failure in late '90's model wranglers.they claim to have no record of the problem, even thought the part has been redesigned.the dealer here has been great, but can't do much without manufacturer support.here's hoping that with enough information on this part, customers can get some satisfaction!dt

Exhaust manifold is cracked in 4 places. Dealership indicated it is a common problem. Contacted chrysler corp, but did not seem concerned. I have done enough research to know that this is happening too frequently. Why won't they issue a recall???

1997 jeep wrangler exhaust manifold.consistent decrease in power, stumbling, and poor gas mileage.after a wreck i noticed the manifold was cracked. Both the insurance company and the authorized jeep dealership told me it was not due to the wreck but due to fact it was a common wrangler problem, and it probably had started prior to the wreck i just hadn't noticed it.but since there is not a recall they would not fix the problem.i have fixed it.

Engine manifold cracked during start up on a cold morning.

Cracks developed in the exhaust system.patched/welded by an independent repairs shop. Less then 20,000 miles, other cracks appeared in a diffeerent location. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that they were aware of the problem.but, repairs would still be done at consumer's cost.

About a week ago i called the dealership to report a cracked exhaust manifold.i asked if there has been any recalls of this and the service manager who was very rude told me no.today, friday may 25th my exhaust manifold has broken in half in two (2) spots each next ta a weld.i have a friend who is a boilermaker and a union rep. As well as an expert in all aspects of welding and metals, has told me this is defective.that it should stand high temps.and a lot longer life than this! well to tell you the truth i have had several automobiles through out the years and i have never had an exhaust manifold break or even crack on me ,ever! the service manager said i was out of warrenty and that i was out of luck..i have even looked at te specs. On the exhaus manifold that jeep advertises and it even says that the exhaust manifold is a long life. Please help me !

Jeep suddenly lostpower on highwayswhile going 55 mph +., causing anear accident whiletrying to coast through lanes of traffic to the median. After 10-15 minutes, i restarted the jeep and it ranfine, but usually about 20-50 miles, it will occur again.. Very hazardous.

Vehicle loses power because of catalytic converter failure.yh

Catalytic converter failure causing poor performance, excessive fuel consumption and noxious odors. Replacement of converter remedied all the problems.

There was a rattling noise in the front of vehicle. Took vehicleto dealer, and they stated that a piece ofcatalytic converter was floating around, and could block the exhaust. Driver stated vehicle stalled at 65 as a result. Consumer was almost hit by an 18 wheeler. Please provide any further information.

Clutch and catalytic converter both need replaced with only 20,500 miles .also has had two driveshafts replaced with only 10,000 miles. Has seen very little 4-wheel drive use, and has 20,500 after 4 years as original owner.

Catalytic converter failed. Yh

All three failures have taken place in the last three months. The latest being the catalytic converter. Have there been other failures reported.

Catalytic converter went prior to30,000 miles, had to be replaced ! gasket cracked at only 37.500 miles, leaking water into engine, had to be replaced.car has only 37.500 highway miles !!!

Terrible rattling noise coming from catalytic converter.sounds like part or parts have shaken loose.no performance loss noticed yet, but very annoying.

Catalytic converter damaged on year after purchase. Mjs

Terrible rattling noise coming from catalytic converter.sounds like part or parts have shaken loose.no performance loss noticed yet, but very annoying.

The catalytic converter broke and the part from it clogged up , which caused the vehicle to loose power.the vehicle wouldn't exceed 50-60 mph along with rattling due to an internally broken converter.the interior door hinge was inoperative. *sc

The exhaust manifold cracked and broke off.

Manifold cracked in two places!i have never even taken it 4-wheeling.

Exhaust header developed a crack extending more than 80% of the diameter of the pipe. Crack occurred adjacent to the weld which holds the connection flange to the exhaust header. This piece has since been redesigned to correct this issue. Because the miles on the car (a little over 42,000) exceeded the warranty (by 6,000), it is my responsiblity for the costs of parts and labor.if jeep has redesigned the part to keep the pipe from breaking shouldn't they re-imburse or fix those that had the original design flaw?

Exhaust manifold cracked in three places. Strong fumes entering vehicle, could cause driver to pass out behind the wheel. Lots of complaints about this same defect on your website.

The exhaust manifold cracked causing fumes to enter the car. Also the manifold supports the exhaust system which could fall off if crack would break completely. There must be an engineering design defect because the part has been redesigned. I also was told the used junk yard parts were cracked so i couldn't buy a used manifold. Not only the cost of the manifold but the safety issues with a failed manifold have me very concerned.nlm

Vehicle would lose pressure and would hesitate.exhaust manifold was cracked. This caused a leakage. Took to mechanic, and informed consumer he couldhear/ seecrack. Had throttle sensor replaced. Contacted district manager, mark highland, and was informed that exhaust manifold would be replaced if owner payed for maintenance. It was an alternative.

Exhaust manifold cracked 6/21/01, local jeep dealer had no recall, not under warranty. I was in the process of finding a better aftermarket replacement manifold when on 7/19/01,while stoppedw/engine running, the plastic hydraulic line for the clutch melted from the excessive heat, andcaught on fire.

Consumers heard loud muffler noise. When vehicle was decelerating it would start to stall. Repair shop determined that it was a cracked exhaust manifold at a weld.consumer contacted dealer. Vehicle was not underwarranty.

The exhaust manifold develope 3 cracks along the reducer joint which required removal and rewelded.the cracks started before the warranty ran out, but i was not able to determine that until i noticed an increase in engine noise and exhaust fumes in the vehicle at which point the warrenty just ran out due to mileage.this component should not fail this fast.

A pipe that comes from engine manifoldhas cracked. When drivingit makes a loud noise. Please provide more information.

Same as everyone else....cracked exhaust manifold on 4.0 l 6 cyl.jeep has redesigned part.i formerly worked with a 4x4 repair shop, and almost everyone that came in with a 1997-2000 (or so) jeep had same cracks.leading 4x4 magazines state "it's not if it cracks, it's when".given this many complaints, jeep should be paying to fix their flaw, not consumers.will replace with aftermarket component, not jeep's.

Crack in exhaust manifold @ pipe union allows exhaust fumes to enter vehicle.also, power steering fluid leekage from steering gear box requires complete steering gearbox replacement @ cost of $1350 on car w/ 49,000 miles.

I have a 97 jeepwrangler.i have a problem everytime i start my jeep after it sits for 20 min.it sounds like it wants to shut down andafter pressing the gas to the floor it finally kicks in and takes off.ilose power alot anditbackfires .i have had theexhaust manifold /catalytic converter replaced and a broken stud in the exhaust manifold to head assembly.this has been going on for 3 years and i have taken it toseveral differnt jeep service department.all the service departments can tell me is that they can't find the problem but theyalways seem to find something else for me to pay for . I'm still having thisproblemand now it's getting worse . What can i do? please help.*nlm

Exhaust manifold weld cracked, carbon chemicals cameinside of car.

On 10/09/00, while starting my vehicle i heard a noise coming from the engine compartment.i had the vehicle checked at the service station that has worked on my vehicle in the past.at that time i was advised that the exhaust manifold on my jeep was missing some bolts.the mechanic advised me to contact a jeep dealership because he had read that the bolts on the jeep's exhaust manifold break.i then called a local jeep dealership and advised them of the problem.they asked me how many miles my jeep had on it and when i told him 83,000 miles, he told me that they only cover until 80,000 miles.if jeep/chrysler know this to be a problem with their jeeps, something should be done for the consumer.

I have only included the one date i can remember that jeep was in the repair shop. But, to this date, after jeep warms up and then is shut off for approx 20 minutes, it hesitates on acceleration. Exhaust manifold started leaking around 30,000 mi.now at 49,850 large cracks have developed. Vehicle misfires and runs rough. Jeep denies problem exists. Seems like the exhaust manifold should be covered under federal emissions warranty.large number of similar complaints show obvious product defect.

Exhaust manifold studsfailed due to fatigue of alumimun bolts.manufacturer has also sent out a tsb #110798 for same defect. Please provide further information.

A crack inengine manifold. Manufacturer replaced the manifold at no cost to consumer.

Exhaust manifold had developed cracks & holes & had to be replaced.

I am in the process of replacing the exhaust manifold on my 1997 jeep wrangler for the second time.the first one failed at approx 55k miles (out of warranty) and chrysler jeep customer service denied existence of a problem with the exhaust system, in spite of numerous reports of manifold failure on many internet automotive sites.the replacement part was supposedly redesigned to prevent recurrence of the problem, but it has now failed (mileage is now 110k, so these are 55k parts!) and must also be replaced.the mechanic stated that the replacement parts just crack in a "new spot".chrysler jeep has been totally unresponsive to what is obviously an engineering flaw in their product, and sticking their customers with the bill and any resulting safety issues!not a great way to build your customer base!

Cracked exhaust manifold on 97 to 2000 jeep tj wranglers.missing exhaust "according" missing resulting in cracked manifold. Resulting in car failing us epa smog guidelines. In search of tj owners showed many owners having this problem.

Driving on a local road heard loud noises and noticed a crack in the exhaust manifold.fumes/odorwere getting intovehicle. Contacted dealer. Vehicle was no longer under warranty.

Weld on exhaust manifold failed due to normal heating and cooling.

Exhaust manifold cracked about 2 inch which may causemanifold to drop while driving. Thiscouldresult ina loss of vehicle control.please provide further information.

Exhaust manifold has developed a crack which allows exhaust fumes to escape intopassenger compartment. Vehicle doe not meet emissions test requirements.

Engine exhaust manifold cracked just before where weld is located crack is over half the diametar of the pipe after reading over 30 complaints on the same or simular problem i can not understand why there is not a call back on this problem there is no dought that it can cause if not found in time a sever harm to the vehicle and possibley to all in the vehicle.

1997 jeep wrangler sport 4.0 liter exhaust manifold crack noted at approximately 60,000 miles.mechanic stated it appeared to be welded, no one had previously welded exhaust manifold.my understanding is that the exhaust manifold in this year tends to crack.is there a recall by the jeep dealership?if so, i have not been notified.also the throttle control sensor as well as o2 sensor effected at this time.vehicle now has 81,000 miles runs poorly has visual crack at the exhaust manifold in two different areas.the only recall i have read about is the air bag but i have never received a notice from jeep eagle or the chrysler company.can you help me?who do i contact, and if the exhaust manifold is commonly known to crack - without cause why wasn't i or possibly others notified?who can i contact?the exhaust manifold according to others is more prominent than the air bag recall. *la

Engine manifold has gone out twice while consumer has been driving. Contacted dealer, anddealer replaced the part, but the problem still occurring.

Exhaust manifold has cracked twice in 20,000 miles. The dealership admits a problem, chrysler customer service does not.i found a boatload of complaints on the internet about the same "jeep" problem but no one will address the issue. *ph

Weld in pipe on manifold cracked.i don't think an exhaust manifold should fail at 52,000 miles.dealer said there was an extended warranty on 4cy. Manifolds that were cracking but not 6 cyl.dealer made me pay $200.00 of the 750.00 repair.i don't think i should ahve to pay for chryslers bad weld.

There was an exhaust smell entering the compartment of the vehicle and there was a loud noise coming from the engine compartment. The owner took the vehicle to a dealership and they indicated that there was a crack in the manifold.the manufacturer was contacted but state that there was nothing they could do because the vehicle was out of warranty.the consumer believes this component should be recalled.*nlm

While driving vehicle started to makenoise, consumer pulled over, and noticed a crack in manifold. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said it was ongoing problem since 1994. Consumer felt it was a manufacturer's defect.

Exhaust manifold cracked at 42000 miles just out of warranty.

Engine manifold has cracked in several places.

Engine was very loud, so i took the vehicle to the dealer who said it was a cracked exhaust manifold. I asked if this is a problem with the wranger and was told that they were not aware of any recalls. Contacted a few jeep clubs via the internet and found out that the cracking of exhaust manifolds on wranglers is very common, to the point that you're lucky if your's doesn't crack, and that the manifold has since been redesigned. I contacted the crysler customer service center on the internet to find out if there was a problem and if in fact the manifold was redesigned as i wanted to make sure that i wasn't just installing another defective exhaust manifold. There are aftermarket exhaust manifolds that carry an unlimited warranty and are in fact less expensive, unfortunately there is a heavy demand for them with a long wait. Chrysler customer service would not provide me with any information, just boiler plate responses thanking me for contacting them. I ordered a new replacement exhaust manifold from the dealer, and when i went to pick it up, both the service and parts managers indicated that they new of no problems with the wrangler exhaust manifold cracking. When i asked if the manifold was redesigned, they indicated that they did not know. When i got home and opened the box containing the replacement manifold, it is obvious that the manifold was indeed redesigned! they added bellows thermal expansion joints in the first and sixth exhaust pipes. Apparently the length of the manifold coupled with thermal expansion, just rips apart the manifold. While i did not have a fire in my engine compartment, as some have had, the underside of the intake manifold was black from the leaking exhaust, and was indeed evident in the car when driving. Repeated contacts to the internet chrysler customer service ended with them cutting off communication. I have digital pictures of the old and the redesigned manfold. I am very disapointed in how chrysler has handled this issue.

My 1997 jeep wrangler sport that has 52000 miles on it developed cracks and breaks in the exhaust manifold. With these cracks and breaks excessive amounts of exhaust fumes leak into the car. After doing some research on the internet this problem apparently is very common. There are many pictures of the exact cracks and breaks on the exhaust manifold from many diff people. It was suggested in one forum that jeep fixed this issue in the 2000 model jeep.

Consumer noticede a loud noise while driving and exhaust fumes coming into the vehicle. Consumer took vehicle to dealer for inspection. Dealer informed consumer that vehicle had multiple cracks on the exhaust manifold, and it was not covered under a recall. *tc

The exhaust manifold had developed cracks & holes & had to be replaced. Had taken to mechanic & was informed a possiblity manifold was defective when it came from manufacturer.

The exhaust manifold cracked nad with end a week was broken in several places.i contact jeep and several dealers ablout the problem. All said that this has not been a common problem and havent even heard of this happening.after looking the problem up on the internet i found well over 300 documented cases.jeep strait out lied about the problem and has refused to help resolve it.

Dt:on the headlight plug a grease was used and it dissolved the insulation around the wiring at the plug ,and blew the fuse. This was on both headlights. Dealer had not been contacted yet. Manufacturer said there were no recalls or tsbs on this, and caller filed a complaint with them, file #13888043.

Sirs, i have some general concerns, and could not find another area on the web site to address them: i can not understand why the same lights that mark brake use, also mark turning.when someone is tapping brakes and has turn signals on, it is unclear what their intention is.i also do not understand why we have running lights on all the time.i have to dim my rear view mirror to avoid being distracted by these lights, which defeats the purpose of these lights.

Turn signal switch failed causing the headlights to flicker when turn signal activated. * et

1997 jeep wrangler tj fuel flow over and leak. I have a 1997 jeep that overflows on fill up and also leaks out the neck when full. This is a fault design of the tank.

Fuel gauge quit working, consumer noticed a fuel level sending unit recall when on yahoo, after calling chrysler, consumer was informed that vehicle was not included due to vin. Consumer has ran out of gas several times resulting in two near accidents.chrysler responded saying that they fixed the problem before the vehicles vin was made.*jg

The contact owns a 1997 jeep wrangler. After parking the vehicle, the contact noticed that gasoline was leaking from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the contact was informed that the fuel tank sending unitgasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 159,000.

While driving on the freeway vehicle beganto smoke and there was no oil in the engine. Oil was leaking from the bottom of vehicle.

1997 jeep wrangler tj sahara - fuel tank overflows when trying to fill up the tank. Has happened more times then i can count. This is dangerous in the aspect that gas leaks all over the rear left side of the vehicle, splashes on the tire and pools on the ground. Not only is it dangerous but it is an environmental hazard as well. This is not an isolated incident as my research shows this is very common with jeep years 97-01 and up. This should warrant a recall and the manufacturer should provide a fix as this is clearly a manufacture defect..

When filling gas tank, near the end, gas gushes out of tank before nozzle cuts off. Has always done this. Complained to dealer many times.

A cracked intakemanifold; dealer / manufacturer were notified, and informed consumer that it was not cover under a recall.feel free to provide us with any further information concerning this matter.

In a 16 month period, i have experienced 3 fuel pump failures. #1 3/3/98 at 34,622 mi.#2 7/9/98 at 43,705 mi. #3 7/3/99 at 67864 mi.this failure has occurred without warning and has left the vehicle inoperable.chrysler customer assistance has been contacted and they claim there are no known issues with the fuel pump.dealer claims otherwise.i feel vehicle is unsafe and unreliable.

The seat belt won't retract therefore the belt gets caught in the door latch.the belt becomes frayed as a result of the damage.this is the second failure.after 4 visits to the dealer, the part was replacedon 9/9/1998 at 46,889 mi.

After tolerating both problems for some time (poor starting and leaking power steering fluid), i took it in for repair estimates.my mechanic told me what the problems were and, that in his opinion, neither should be happening at the low miles i have on the vehicle.i am currently trying to get chrysler to put more than a minimal portion into the repairs.no safety defect listed.

The fuel tank sending unit malfunctioned causing an incorrect fuel level on the instrument panel.the gauge would read 1/4 or 1/2 when the tank was actually empty.a recall (94v106000) was issued for this problem but the consumer's vehicle was not included due to vin (safety recall 755 - fuel tank sending unit).

The engine stalls when shifting from first to second gear. Dealer has seenvehicle twice, and said vehicle needed a new fuel rail.

Fuel gauge reads that there is gas in tank when its really empty. Has been to dealer before and same problem occurs.

Gas gauge experienced problems prior to recall notice, dealership did not find problem with gas gauge at time incident (consumer was not getting the same amount of mileage or performance) (97v-194003). Mjs

Recall # 97v194000 chrysler/ fuel sending unit; wranger serviced under recall on may 27, 1999. Since that time fuel tank gauge indicator has showenfuel tank to be empty twice. Owner was only able to fill tank with 10 1/2 gallons. Fuel tank holds 19 1/2 gallons.

Fuel tank mounted fuel level sending unit accuracy degraded over time indicating more fuel in reserve than is actually present resulting in comsumer running out of gas.nlm

Fuel tank and filler neck failed, resulting in tank not being able to be filled properly.

Fuel gauge is not working properly. Gauge indicates more fuel then there is in the tank. Dealer contacted.consumer was informed by the dealer that there was a recall, however this vehicle is not included.

Consumernoticed a fuel leak.mechanic replacedplastic fuel tank, it had cracked.

Vehicle has was repaired twice under manufacturer's recall concerning fuel sending unit twice. Consumer still misreads the amount of fuel .the dealer has been notified.

Upon fillinggas tank a gush of gas comes fromtop center of tank, causing gas to run over the side ofvehicle and the ground. Took vehicle to dealer. Issue was not resolved. Please provide any further information.

Fuel tank and filler neck failed, resulting in tank not being able to be filled properly.

I have talked to several dealerships and i have been told my jeep was not made on the right date under the recall.i have had a problem with the gage/sending unit for the last (almost) three years.i do not understand why my jeep is not covered when so many more are with the same problem.my gage sometimes does not show empty when it is and sometimes showes empty 100 miles into the full tank.i have talked to seval other jeep owners and some of them have experienced the same problem.yet, the dealerships say even though some jeeps are covered under the recall others are not.crazy!

4-wheel drive inoperable. In addition, driver's seat belt will not retract/gas gauge failed, shows tank 1/4-1/2 full when it is actually out of gas/passenger's side door handle very tight and squeaky/abs brakessqueal loudly/automatic transmission has trouble shifting and sticks prior to releasing to next gear, and seat belt warningsystem buzzersounds at times uneven and loud with a squeaking noise.

My fuel gauge shows 1/4 tank when empty- there was a safety recall in '98 (nhtsa # 97v194003 & tsb # 755) for this same problem for my year vehicle. When i contacted the dealer and also the manufacturer, i was told that this recall did not apply to my vehicle- if it is a safety problem for other vehicles of the same make/model/year, and i have the problem (obviously), theni don't understand why my vehicle was not included in the recall- thank you for allowing me to report this.

Gasguage gives an inaccurate reading ofamount of fuel invehicle.a recall has been issued onvehicle make and model. However, this vehiclewas not included due tovin.

Vehicles has faulty gas gauge. Yh

Gas gauge falsely reads the amount of gas in the vehicle, causingthe vehicle to suddenly lose power. Dealer will be contacted.

Fuel gauge failed.

Gas gauge did not report accurately in the amoun tof fuel in the vehicle. This happened while driving on freeway at high speeds or while stopping at a light.

*scc

Fuel level sendingunit indicates significantly more fuel in reserve than actually present.recall97 v 194 000 has been issued onvehicle make and model. However, this vehicle was not included due to the vin . Please provide further details.

Fuel sending unit failed twice.

Fuel tank sending unit failed causing consumer to run out of gas when gauge indicates fuel left in tank when empty.

Fuel sending unit for reserve fuel tank is not operating properly. Fuel unit does not show proper amount of fuel intank. Dealership has examinedvehicle, and informed consumer that this vehiclewas not affected by recall 97v194003.please provide any additional information / attachments.

The fuel gauge failed.the consumer had come across some information relating to a recall for this vehicle.the consumer contacted chrysler and was informed that there was a recall, however, his vehicle was not included due to the vin.*scc

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at 40 mph, the fuel gauge displayed a faulty reading.the gauge indicated a quarter tank of fuel was available however the vehicle had ran out of fuel. The fuel gauge completely failed to function. The service dealer and manufacturer were notified.

Recall repair work on the fuel gauge/sending unit, however failed again.

The fuel tank skid plate is rotted out and the tank is in danger of falling.

I experienced sudden acceleration when at a complete stop with foot on break.throttle went very high and propelled car forwarded even when pushing the breaks penal down as hard as i could.there is no way i pushed down on the wrong pedal.the breaks could not hold the car stopped.this is extremely dangerous!

Fuel guache govea inaccurate reading and drops to empty when the tank is half full. Contacted the local jeep dealer twice on having this part replaced and each time they tell me they will call me back but they have not.

Dt:was driving eastbound, a tractor trailer was westbound, the turbulence behind tractor trailer caused the external hood latches to fail.the safety hook in the center of the hoodalso failed to keep the hood down.the hood flew up striking windshield and folded over shattering windshield. Lost visibility however maintained control of vehicle.

Both external rubber side latches failed on 1997 jeep wrangler.the hood flipped up and obscured the driver's visibility.the hood was destroyed by its impact against the roof.this vehicle had been manufactured w/o the standard internal latch due to several parts changes during the manufacturing year.an internal latch could not be fitted to the mis-matched hood and grill.

Hood flew open at 30mph. Chrysler redesigned latch but not recalled. Original hood latch not appropriate without use of side latches, even at low speeds.

Hood latches are made of rubber allowing them to give when meeting oncoming traffic.latches failed twice on windy days when meeting large vehicles on roadway.

Strong wind caused hood latch to break/fly up.(qcaw)

Consumer states emergency parking brake is not holding causing vehicle to roll.

Noticed wobble underneath while driving.inspected underneath and noticed light showing between transfer case skid plate and frame (should be tight) and bolt hanging down.took into shop and lower mid frame on both sides is completely rusted through allowing skid plate bolts to fall out with nuts still attached.skid plate also serves as transfer case mount and when it drops the driveshaft wobbles.ultimately if it had completely let go on the highway the rear driveshaft would have locked up and locked the rear wheels causing uncontrolled skid, or the driveshaft would break causing danger to the passengers.

Powertrain control module failure.vehicle shut down without warning on several occasions but would restart after a few minutes.on last instance, when vehicle was restarted, the engine went to 3000 rpms and would not return to idle.

Transmission failure.

Transmission problem.

Design of skid plate over the transfer case and exhaust causes it to act like a shovel pan cutting grass off road and depositing it there causing the grass to burn.

Automatic transmission, in 4wd, disengaged while climbing steep hill. The engine reved up then the tranmission re-engaged. This occured while transmission fluid was full to the upper mark. Problem did not occur when transmission fluid was over filled.

While driving at 55mph downshifted and the shifter would not release from fifth to forth, pulled out of gear and coasted, vehicle would not go into any gear at all. Dealer contacted and was not aware of the problem, awaiting a new transmission for vehicle. Provide further information.

Driving in 5th gear attempted to downshift for stoplight, was able to get into neutral, but was unable to shift into any gear.was stranded in the middle of busy intersection unable to move.

Gear shift froze in fifth gear pulled gear shift from transmission and couldn't shift into different gear.the fifth gear is now sitting in my closet.new part has been installed, now my check engine light is on due to faulty 4th cylinder ejecter.dealer said all my valves needed to be replaced for $1400.00 gave him the finger and said nice try!

I have an automatic transmission in this jeep. It would not shift into 3rd geer. It has never been used off road. Its my daughters car. She uses it to go to college and back home.

I was having problems shifting into second gear,at first,i was coming up to a stop sign and tried to down shift when the shifter would not go into any gear,it was locked up took it to a mechanic and he said that 5th gear was cracked and locked up all the shafts in the transmision. I have been having problems with shifting into second gear since i bought the vehicle and took it to the dealer 2 times and they said that nothing was wrong.

The engine stalls when shifting from first to second gear. Dealer has seenvehicle twice, and said vehicle needed a new fuel rail.

While driving in heavy traffic at highway speeds the vehicle will completely shut down without warning, cause unknown.dealer cannot identify the problem.please give any further details.

On 09/07/99 as my jeep wrangler was parked in the parking lot of my bank it proceeded to roll backwards out of the parking lot, across a busy street, and into a canal ( ditch). It landed on its right side and was submersed. It took two tow trucks and 3 hours to pull it out. Once at the jeep dealership they investigated to see what had happened. They came to the conclusion that it was the gear shift ( which had been in the parked position) but never gave any specifics. My insurance and i ended up paying a total of about $9,000 dollars. The repairs took a month and a half, in which my insurance paid for a rental car. When i asked about having the powertrain investigated by an outside mechanic they offered to "sell" it to me for $1000 dollars. I filed a complaint with the manufacturer shortly thereafter, and never to this day have received a reply. After reading the artcile in the newspaper today about the defects in the grand cherokees it made me think about my jeep and what happened to me. The situations with others was exactly like my experience except that no one was injured. Please investigate the wranglers years 1995-1999 also for similar accidents. That jeep was my first vechicle after graduating college, i had always wanted one. It was the first and will be the last jeep i ever own after that horrible experience. I am just so thankful that no one was injured.

Transmission valve body failed.yh

When putting vehicle in park after about 2 minutes it will go into reverse, but the lever is still in park.consumer has yet to contact dealer. At times the car will go into neutral, but the lever is still in park.the head lights also short out at times.i have to move the blinker handle to get them on again.*yd

While driving about 30 mph and shifting gears, the gear shift came off in driver's hand, causing driver to lose control of the vehicle.owner experienced this problem 3 other times.all times the part was repaired by the dealership.

Gear shifter came out of its housing as the car was being driven, due to weak lock, replacement of both upper and lower level shifter.

Whike driving at 65mph on interstate transfer case came apart and front driveshaft fell out. When this happened the airbags deployed, windshield wipers came on, washer squirted, dash lights came on. Transfer case broke apart fromvehicle while traveling at approximately 70 mph.please provide any additional information/attachments.

The shift stick popped out of its fixed location.i believe this could be a hazardous problem, luckily it happened when i brought my vehicle to a stop.for further reference- this vehicle is adult driven by myself only and is never taken off road.i purchased it with 31k miles.after removing the shifter boot, we noticed that there is no bolt or any other type of feature that actually secures the shifter in its location.i would be than happy to answer any other questions regarding this, to prevent a serious accidents transpiring from this defect. Thank you.

When driver was pulling of from a stop, the gear shift lever came apart in the driver's hand. The dealer/manufacturer is aware of the problem. Please provide further details.

Car was parked and it jumped out of gear into reverse and hit air pump at the gas station.

Noticed oil leaking. Had the vehicle serviced at the dealer who put a new seal on. Axle oil seals are leaking over the rear brakes (on both sides).i know at least 3 other persons with the same problem who had it fixed under amy warrenty has run out, there should be a recall.

Manual transmission will lock out 3rd gear when trying to downshift between 20-35 mph.

Clutch, flywheel all related parts failed, water leaking on passenger side floor, clock and radio broke dealer cant fix, seat belts wont retract, sway bars come loose

Clutch pedal fell off while driving 55 mph.clutch pedal attachment to clutch cylinder has a plastic grommet which broke and caused clutch pedal to fall off.neither dealer nor jeep customer service would assist in procurring replacement grommet, consumer was told that the old style has a pin connection instead of plastic.*scc

Blew rear differential and have never taken it off road or driven hard.very angry and disgusted!!!!it's in the shop now.

Transmission sticks and grinds when shifting into 2nd gear;dealer changed transmission fluid, but still sticks and grinds; shifting into 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears it seems like synchronizers aren't working properly.this vehicle was a used vehicle which i recently purchased and was told that this is a common complaint and it seems like dealer doesn't want to do anything about it.*la

I was exiting the highway and starting to slow for the merge at the end of the ramp.i was in fifth gear and downshifting into fourth, when i found i could no longer shift.the shifter got stuck in neutral.luckily there was little traffic and the light just after the merge was green or i would no have been able to pull over.i would have been stuck in the middle of the road and possibly would have caused an accident.it could have also happend on the highway with worse possibilities.the jeep has been used only as a car.no off-roading or towing.the transmission was also maintained as per manufacturer recommendation.i have that documentation if needed.

2nd gear - difficult to engage, and often pops out of gear while driving or parked;4wd low also difficult to engage, and often pops out to neutral while driving

The clutch pedal quit working and the throw out bearing was broken.*ph

Transmission sticks trying to shift into 2nd gear, has been serviced, still is sticking while shifting especcially into 2nd gear, which sometimes grinds. Dealer has changed the transmission fluid twice, 2nd time used synthetic fluid. 2nd gear feels like the syncronizer is not working properly, or very slowly.i must hold the clutch in for an extened period to allow 2nd gear to syncronize before shifting into it up and down shifting.

When driving the vehicle vibrates and there is a noise, when trying to shift gear sometimes it sticks, took to dealer and he said that this isthe way it should be .

The gear shift lever pulled out of the transmission.

Whileshifting from second to third very quickly the stick becomes loose and falls off completely.the vehicle is not operable .this happened twice.contacted dealer first time, and they put a pin which broke. Secondtime, dealer put another pin which also broke.

Consumer was driving at approximately 40-50 mph, went to changegear when stick shift came out onto consumer's hand. Shift pulled right out of transmission. Consumer then had to try to put shift back in and downshifted to regain control of vehicle. Dealer replaced shift lever.

Dealer refused to do recall work, recall #97v080000.

Whtile driving over an overpass a vehicle made a left hand turn in front of consumer causing a collision, air bags did not deploy and the shoulder strap did not hold, vehicle was totaled and two people were injured.

Seat belt catches on driver's door latch 9 out 0f 10 times. Seat belt is getting a hole in it. Leak has been fixed 15 times and it still leaks on passenger's feet. Damage is occurring to interior of jeep and anything left on the floor gets wet. I was told( dot number: ? tire size: 22ss/75r15 )

The problem is with both driver's and front passenger's seat belts.they do not retract properly and therefore become caught in the door latch.this has caused multiple nicks and abrasions in the belt.i had spoken to the dealer about this and they replaced one of the belts while the vehicle was under warrantee.my concern is that the belt will fail in an accident.i have not followed up with the manufacturer or dealer since.i would like you to investigate and, if this is a real danger, encourage the manufacturer to correct.thank you.

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 40 mph under normal road and braking conditions, the hydraulic brakes failed without warning, almost causing an accident.the brake petal was applied to avert an accident and went to the floor.the brake lines burst causing brake fluid to leak from beneath the vehicle.the nature of failure was permanent.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic shop, who determined that the cause of the problem was due to rust on the brake line.there were no prior warnings of failure.the manufacturer was contacted and expressed they had no obligation to report this problem to the public.the vehicle was currently at the shop for further evaluation.

I have e-mailed you several times and no answer. Front brakes on my jeep lock up on slick road and you have no control, almost wrecked several times. Anti lock brakes do not work on front. Vehicle has anti-lock brakes on all four wheels. I cannot get any satisfaction from company. Servioce managerdrove it and almost wrecked. Another mechanic drove it and said the only way that you could stop it on slick road was 4-wheel.i paid $23,900.00 for it and should be able to drive it on sllick roads.

Front wheellock up on slick road-snow-mud. I have had it to garage several times. Very dangerous, one mechanic was about to wreck trying it out. Other mechanic said that you could not stop it on slick road except when it was in 4-wheel. Front wheels lock and you can steer. Chry.finaly sent rep. In this week but he drove it in level dry field, he said that nothing was wrong with it. I dont drive it in snowy weather, will chrysler reimburse me or pay for damages if i shouild wreck?

Front brakes only stop the vehicle, back brakes do not engage. On ice, the vehicle does not stop because the auto trans keeps the rear wheels turning whle the front slides. I have attempted to have this problem corrected several times.

Excessive wear of brake pads. Three sets of pads were replaced within four months . Dealer notified, and informedconsumer that part was not under manufacturer's recall.

Stopped behind three or four vehicles at a red traffic light.the consumer foot was firmly on the brake and the car accelerated and hit the vehicle in front.please give more detail.

I called chrysler this a.m. And the girl hung up on me she said that i would have to get someone else to help me. I have hadmy 1997 jeep wrangler, saharato garage i dont know how many times since it was new. It has anti-lock brakes on all 4-wheels and on slick roads the front wheels lock up and you cannot steer it then. In snow, gravel, grass etc.this is a very dangerous problem. I dont think that they should hang up on me as i own dodge 1999 truck and cherokee limited all bought new.

The truck had some brake failure which resulted from a seal leakat the power brake booster. When applying the brakes the truck does not seem to want to stop.

On a maintained dirt county road the brakes on my 1997 jeep wrangler failed to stop my car causing a rear end collision with another car.i could feel the pulsing of the abs brakes but the car refused to slow down,it pulled me into the car infront of me.

Front brakes lock up on slick roads and then no control. I have taken it back several times. Took back the other dy and the shop foreman almost went in a ditch. I dont let my wife drive as it is dangerous. It has antilock brakes on front. The shop man said that i need to get someone from factory to look at. I cannot get any satisfaction from company. I took it to another dealer the other day and he said that there was no way to stop this jeep on a slick road. I would like for some factpry person to look at it. As it is very dangerpus. I do not drive it on snowy roads as you cant stop it in 2-wheel drive. I woulappreciate your help on this matter.

Vehicle was involved in a crash.to avoid a head on collision, driver applied brakes and jeep veered to the left, making head-on impact with a bridge.after flipping several times ended up over guard rail on river bank beside a tree.driver sustained massive severe injuries and permanent disabilities.no recalls were issued until after vehicle was totaled and destroyed.airbag team was called at time of incident and stated to look at vehicle would only be a waste of their time and our money. I was shocked to find there were defects in the srs, i thank god i was not killed in this crash because of obvious defects.

When the brakes were applied at any speed the vehicle would pull to the left.

Dt: while driving at various speeds androad conditions the front brakes locked. When the brakes lock the wheels skidded either to the right or left, but more oftento the right.had been to the dealer numerous times.no repairs were done because dealerdeterminednothing was wrong.called chrysler, and tried to speak to an engineer and they did not wish to talk to consumer. Vehicle was involvedin severalcrashes.

Jeep skidded on wet surface. On removing rear drum i found the brake adjustment cable broken. Brake shoes were ok. In my opinion the brake adjustment cable was defective.

Hard brake line leading to the rear axle burst with a loss of braking.brake line, as it passed over the frame near the front wheel well was severely rusted and crumbling.when removing the line for replacement the line also broke in half at one of the clips mounted on the frame.

1. Immediate loss of braking due to rusted brake lines2. Replaced rusted brake lines;3. I saved old parts.

Master cylinder seal leak.

Because the brake pedal and the gas pedal are within one inch of each other, when depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal passes the gas pedal and causes consumers foot to catch the side of the gas pedal which overrides the brake. This condition caused a crash in july of 97. Dealer stated that there was not a problem with the jeep. Problem has been reported to the manufacturer.

The truck had some brake failure which resulted from a seal leakat the power brake booster. When applying the brakes the truck does not seem to want to stop.

Violentwobbling of front of jeep ,it comes and goes at different speeds and you must come to a sudden stop to avoid loosing control of vehicle . I don't know what is causing this as there is no apparent damage to repair. In my opinion it is a factory defect and the vehicle is unsafe for use on public roads and highways.

While driving my jeep on a public road going about 45, the vehicle began to shake uncontrollably. I had to pull over and stop the vehicle in order for the shaking to stop. It was incredibly dangerous, and i was lucky that i wasn't involved in an accident.

Framewas rotted through from control armtowards the back of the vehicle. The vehicle braking ability became difficult and hard to steer.

Ron ford reports that the steering makes a loud noise and vehiclegoes straight ahead when trying to make a turn, vehicle would not turn. Dealer contacted, and no attempts made to remedy the problem. Accident occurred while vehicle was trying to make a turn, hit a boulder, at 35-40 mph, air bag did not deploy upon impact. No repairs have been made. Problems still exist. Provided further information.

Vehicle steering dampener failed causing driver to loos control of the vehicle when he hit a bump.

Vehicle slid on ice/ lost control, and hit a boulder head-on.then rolled over. Dual airbags did not deploy which could have caused injuries.

Vehicle involved in rollover accident.rear passenger seat came loose, struck driver in head, ejected from vehicle.should this have happened?

The vehicle used as personal auto, non recreational vehicle, in mormal city driveing conditions. Speed 50 to 55 mph, i passed over a seam in the pavement, an undamped oscelation was initated in the front suspension, the car became uncontrolable at all speeds.i was alble to safely pull the vehicle to the side of the rode and stop without further incednet.investitagion of the steering components identifed exceve wear on front end tie rods and stearing damper.the car is a 97 jeep tj with 35000 miles .

Consumer states that while driving ran over bump in the road and loss control of vehicle.consumer feels the power steering resovoir was poorly designed.please provide any further information.ts

After replacement of air bag, light continued to illuminate due to failure of the clock spring (recall component).

Consumer was turning on to a side road at approximately5 mph when steering wheel separated fromthe steering column. Dealer notified.

Faulty steering column.

While driving at highway speeds, the vehicle started pulling to the right, consumer then proceeded to get off interstate, then steering wheel locked up. Dealer replaced steering column. Please provide details.

Column shaft upper bearing fell off, causing car to wobble on the freeway.

Leak on passenger side.floor gets wet when it rains orairconditioner is on.maunfacturer said that there may be some clogged vents.if this is happening to so many other jeep owners, maybe it should be considered more of a design flaw.

Steering wheel: driving along at approximately 20mph and the steering wheel locked up, had to work back and forthin order to get steering wheel back in use, took vehicle in for repairs and was told that they can't find any problem. Has happened about six times.

Crack in exhaust manifold @ pipe union allows exhaust fumes to enter vehicle.also, power steering fluid leekage from steering gear box requires complete steering gearbox replacement @ cost of $1350 on car w/ 49,000 miles.

Parts are on national backorder. No safety defect mentioned.

Steering gear box out of order.yh

While driving at 35 mph on the highway this vehicle swerved and lost control, went into a ditch front first andflipped over. Upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. The vehicle has been declared totaled. Dealer has not been contacted.

Power steering pressure switch failed (loose and leaking).

Fell a sleep and ran off the road, the jeep rolled over and flipped over on front and back, driver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy, driver sustained injuries.

Flywheelgrinds a hole in the plastic reservoir, allowing fluid to leak out, addition to spraying power steering fluid all over engine when fluid leaks onto the fan blade, replace power steering fluid reservoir, new unit worked its way loose after two weeks.

Power steering pump/pully fell off taking out the water pump and serpentine belt.unable to drive, was able to get off the road without incident.never heard of a power steering pump falling off.estimate to repair $767.00.had vehicle maintained at dealer a couple of months ago.vehicle has never been taken off road.

For the past 15 years we have been proud owners of a 1997 jeep wrangler. In1998, we retired to cape cod, ma. Over the time we have owned our jeep, it has been kept in immaculate condition; the vehicle has been garage kept, hand washed weekly, and never taken off-road. The finish is near perfect and all regular service has been performed.currently the mileage is 91,000 miles.at our last service appointment we learned of a major issue with the vehicle's frame. It had rusted through in multiple locations from the inside out. The estimated cost to repair the frame is $5,000 from our local dealer, premier jeep, in hyannis ma. Our mechanic advised that the frame can be repaired by welding 6 new sections into place at an approximate cost of $2700.needless to say, we are dismayed. We conducted research to see why this problem occurred despite our upkeep regimen. Apparently, water is known to enter the frame and not properly drain due to it is design. We contacted chrysler corporate who asked us to have the vehicles good condition confirmed by our local jeep dealer which we did.chrysler offered no further assistance. We are filing this report as this frame is going to loose integrity and fail based on no mishandling on our part.there is clearly a defect in the frame design which we believe the manufacturer should stand behind its product.

Water leaks originating under the dashboard on the front passenger side of the vehicle causing damage in the interior of vehicle, unable to be rectified.

Frame rusting through in front of rear control arms. Frame rusted through where skid plate bolts to the bottom.

Water leaks onto floor of passenger side of vehicle.this is a known problem, i have heard this one several times, yet haven't seen jeep do anything about it.there was nothing that happened to my truck to cause this, it rains and my passenger side floor gets soaked.

The contact owns a 1997 jeep wrangler. While inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the wheel well was visibly corroded. The vehicle was taken to manahawkin chrysler dodge jeep ram (500 new jersey 72 west, manahawkin, nj 08050) where it was diagnosed that the frame was rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the contact would be responsible for the repair cost. The failure mileage was 63,000.

Water leaks at front passenger compartment floor between the floor and heater.

I have owned this vehicle since it was brand new. It has been garage kept for approx. 20 of its 21yrs. The rear frame where the trailing arms are attached to the brackets rusted out. The driver side trailing arms were almost ready to separate from the frame due to the frame rusting from the inside out. I had to cut out the section and replace it with a safe t cap patch. Cutting open the frame showed extensive rust on the inside of the frame. I checked my passenger side luckily not as bad as the driver side but will have to be replaced because it does have signs of rusting from the inside out in the exact same place. After doing some research it appears this is a common problem for the jeep tj's. Jeep cut several holes in the sides of the frame that allowed water and debris access to the inside of the frame rail but did not put ant drain holes in the bottom of the frame to allow the water/debris to escape.

The contact owns a 1997 jeep wrangler. The contact stated that the frame was rusted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage and vin was not available.

The contact owns a 1997 jeep wrangler. The contact stated that while performing routine maintenance on the vehicle he noticed that the frame was severely rusted. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was confirmed that the frame was rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 141,000.

Water leak into passenger side of vehicle.

Frame is rusting through at the upward bend towards the rear tires on both sides. Issue is constantly reported online, in forums, with endless numbers of pictures. This is a serious safety concern as it compromises frame integrity. This issue is usually noticeable from the outside but in my case it is rusting from the inside out so if i hadn't caught it i would be in danger.

When traveling about 20 to 25 mph the hood shakes, consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer stated there are missing bumpers which were not installed at the assembly. Part # 55176741aa.

Top is fraying after being replaced.

Dt: contact stated the hood latchwas made from rubber, and when a strong wind hit the hood, it blew the hood open and caused the rubber to break that kept the hood latched.the vehicle has not been inspected or repaired yet.

The top was bought last year.stored, hard top was removed, soft top was put on, and plastic pieces were screwedon the top over windshield and driver/passenger doors.when the wind stresses against the plastic the fiber plastic material rips open and comes apart, 8 inch tear in both sides.

Drivers seat belt comes undone at any speed every time you drive it -a few times each time you drive it, rear center mounted tail light does not work, tailgate hinges are extrremely difficult to shut causing the tailgate to not be closed properlyall the time, front turn signal sometimes does not work, especially if it is wet out- dealer notified and was told that they cannot replace the socket (not a stock item), the bulbs are fine in the brake light and turn signal.

The frame is rotting away, the frame rot clearly started many years ago. The rust is quite bad and will not stop. In an accident, the body could possibly fly off the frame possibly being fatal. The frame is rusting from control arm brackets to body mounts all of which can lead to very dangerous situations.

Vehicle was making a really loud noise when steering was being turned .consumer has gotten arbitration for this vehicle.

Framewas rotted through from control armtowards the back of the vehicle. The vehicle braking ability became difficult and hard to steer.

My frame is rotting from the inside out. The rear trailing arm mounts are welded to the frame and the frame rotted through from the inside out. The vehicle will not pass the required saftey inspection. I started looking for a way to repair/replace the frame and found that this is a common problem. The cost of repair will exceed the value of the vehicle.the date i have entered is the date the problem was found.

Driving down the road the rear upper control arm brackets separated from the frame as a result of the frame corroding from the inside out.this caused the rear brake line to brake draining the master cylinder.

After hitting bumps in the road the steering seems like it wobbles entire vehicle.

Tires wearing unevenly, possible suspension problem.yh

Death shimmy at 40mph.steering wheel shakes violently from sisde to side. Taken to dealer, tire shops ect. No one can figure it out.replaced traking arm, wheels andtires.front end alignment and rotated tires.

Driveability problems vibrations start at 40 mph and entire front end shakes violently , actually bouncing front end off of road making it nearly impossible to retain control. Problem is being referred to among owners as "death wobble". All components checked, replaced and/or repaired without any improvement. Major problem for jeep owners should be a safety recall. Could cause loss of control at any speed above 40 mhp.

While making a right turn at 35 mph vehicle pulled to the right. Mechanic determined right and left lower control arms were bent, also upper left control arm. Parts needed to be replaced.. Consumer stated the upper and lower control arms were bent. *jg

While driving at 45 mph and withoutprior warning front sway bar broke, and the front wheels felt like they were falling off.

Front torsion baris flimsy and undersized, became stressed under normal operating conditions (no offroading) and gave way.turning, maneuvering in traffic very dangerous as side-to-side swaying became excessive.

Sway bar link balljoints popped out on boths sides making the jeep unstable in turns.the are like this on 9 out of 10 jeeps i have inspected with low mileage.

While driving 55 mph vehicle suddenly lost steering control. Consumer had to slam on brakes to regain steering control. Vehicle was taken to a repair shop, andmechanic determined that the link on the stabilizer barbroke. The dealer was not notified.the consumer feels that the connecting link is not sturdy enough and is weak due to it's size.

5-speed trans hard to shift cold.front sway ber links breaking

Clutch, flywheel all related parts failed, water leaking on passenger side floor, clock and radio broke dealer cant fix, seat belts wont retract, sway bars come loose

Both left and right sway bar links popped out of their sockets causing reduced control of side to side stabelization. This could be a very serious stability problem if the driver does not know their broken and has to make a quick turn. This part is not safe and should be recalled. Thanks.

I have taken care of this jeep covering every speck of rust as soon as i seen it and today while cleaning the underside of the jeep i found a rust hole in the frame. From the outside it looks brand new. After examination i found the entire frame has rusted out form the inside out and was full of chunks of metal. I believe this to be a massive safety hazard that jeep designed a frame that holds water and salt and will rust out without the owner even knowing how dangerous it is to drive the vehicle.

The frame is rusting around the rear control arm mounts , i have seen others rust in the same place in person and on the internet.thereare even companies that make repairs for this problemlike safe-t-cap.therust on mine is bad enough that it will not pass state inspection without being repaired.

Rough idle;engine check light on; stalling, bucking at speed; noisey/cracked exhaust

Car has a bucking and poor proformance at highway speeds up long hills, making 60mph impossible.it has been a poor highway performer, but has become "rough-missfiring" very badly 3 times in the car life. First 2 serious failures i got a engine check light, resulting in dealer visits.now the engine checklight was "fixed"it is not there, but the failure mode is.the car exhaust pipe end is quite black, dirty running?the valves and internal engine parts are very dirty and had to be cleaned or replaced when inspected the last 2 times.it happened at 5k, 12k, and now at 37k.the car is now almost 3 years old and i have had it in for other repairs totaling at least 6 times.this is more times than my last 10 year vehicle had.(not jeep)am i now out of help since it is out of warrantee at 36k?i am getting worried the car will not perform to 100k like this as it may be damaged!what is the extent of my rights now? thanks,, ss

Hello, we have a black paint job. We know this part is not a safety feature , but by aug. ,sept. The paint will be pilling off!!! cracking really bad!!! we are the original owners. Have had old amc jeeps , never any problems !! rust maybe because we had our 82 jeep from the very beginning. The other problem we have is the check engine light comes on when the fuel changes in pgh. Per season!!! now there is a clunk in the rear housing, with our 4-wheel drive we have limited slip.

Continuos problem with car cutting out and backfiring when attempting acceleration after warming up then cooling down 20minutes

Applied brakes, vehicle went into open throttle position, and transmission will down shift while driving to a complete sto.

Vehicle's automatic transmission had sudden unwanted acceleration, the car coul not stop. The driver put it in neutral then it slowed down.

While starting. Engine starts accelerates and dies.

While driving up hills vehicle only travels up to 45 mph.dealer cannot determine the cause of the problem.

Stopped behind three or four vehicles at a red traffic light.the consumer foot was firmly on the brake and the car accelerated and hit the vehicle in front.please give more detail.

The gas pedal and the brakes pedal are so close together that when consumer went to slam on brakes his foot was on bothpedals. Ths condition resulted in a small accident.

Unable to defrost windshield, no air from vents due to breakage of internal lever in heater housing.this makes the vehicle unsafe to drive in cold weather.

The 1997 jeep wrangler has a problem with the hvac dampers literally falling apart and becoming unusable.the plastic ends break off and the actuators will not operate them.the part has been upgraded by chrysler so they now this exists.it is a fairly expensive repair (over $700).my is done.the dealer did just fine but i have ask chrysler to make this a safety recall.the defrosters are virtually non usable when this occurs.this is a dangerour situation, driving with no defrosters.this problems has occurred on many wrangers and as my dealer said cherekee as well.

Defrost malfunctioning.

Heater blower failed to blow onfront windshield. Dealer was notified, and unwilling to assist because vehicle was out of its warranty, and not covered under a manufacturer'srecall.provide any further information .

Unable to defrost windows, no air flow from vents due to internal lever in heater housing broken, vehicle unsafe to drive in cold weather

There is a malfunction in the heater core that causes windows to fog up when engine is heated. Dealer has not seen vehicle.

When turning defroster on, there would be a popping sound. Have taken vehicle to dealer & mechanic said lever had separated that caused defroster not to work. It needed replacing. This was done at least 6 different times.

I'm the original owner and sole driver of a 1997 jeep wrangler with 34,000 miles. I noticed the windshield defroster wasn't working when i drove home in a snow storm last week. Fortunately, the drive was a short distance. I easily determined that a plastic bell crank broke off its shaft that goes into the heater housing. I activated the defroster control to confirm that this part is the defroster bell crank. Nothing has fallen down the defroster duct to jam the door and cause the break. The door moves freely when turning the shaft by hand. I believe the break happened when the defroster was actuated during max heater fan, causing max air pressure on the defroster door with max torque on its shaft.the repair estimate from my local dealer is $855. I have a strong suspicion this is a common problem and doubt if many people go to this expense to fix it. I dont want to spend this amount of money on a defect that may break again. Since driving with frosted windshields creates a considerable safety hazard, i think a recall should be initiated to make this system more robust. A windshield defroster should last much longer than 34,000 miles.

While drivingwindow ondriver's sidesprung open, althoughwindowwas locked up.manufacturer was notified about the problem. Please provide any further information.

Rear wiper washer leaking.yh

The rear differential was cracked, as was the exhaust manifold. Also the crank sensor harness and the tps were melted against the manifold. The dash leaked water and the brake shoes/lining and rack and pinion set needed replacing. The drivers side seatbelt would never retract and the dash lead water extensively causing the resstr-blower to go out. The radio was also broken for a couple of months

I am reporting that chrome side mirrors made by steelhorse for jeep wranglers are defective. This is my second pair and as soon as you reach 35-40mph or drive off in a good wind these mirrors flop down, rendering them useless. In the state of texas, rearview mirrors are required to pass inspection. This company makes a defective product and should stop doing so. Also, there is no way to make adjustments to these mirrors to tighten them up so the wind won't blow them over.

The dirver's side mirror doesn't stick well, so when you drive around it easily moves, anddriver can't see the cars besides him.has to look back which can be dangerous.

The windshield had developed a stress crack. It obstructed the driver's view. Had it replaced. The problem reappeared.when the vehicle was parked & was raining, the cracks were noticed at the top & in the middle on the passenger's/driver's sides.

Whike driving at 65mph on interstate transfer case came apart and front driveshaft fell out. When this happened the airbags deployed, windshield wipers came on, washer squirted, dash lights came on. The passenger air bag busted the windshield, and the face of the passenger.her jaw is broken in three places and her four upper teeth were removed from their sockets. She required extensive reconstructive surgery, and is still in the hospital.noothers objects or vehicles were involved. The driver beat the airbag down and safely parked the car in the median. Why did airbags deploy and with such force?

Standard steel wheels have corroded and one has started to leak air. Metal remaining on other wheels have also deteriorated to a point that they may fail. No indication of failure is evident to the driver. Wheel could rupture and fail causing loss of control to steering. 15x7 steel * 5 bolt on 4.5bolt patternbackspacing = 5.5 offset = +38 mm.
