Read complaints for JEEP WRANGLER (1995)

Consumer noticed vehicle's transmission slipping, minor atf leak, & had vehicle inspected.atf was heavily contaminated by particulate matter generated by mechanical waste.no leak was initially found upon inspection, however one was visibly apparent after inspection as atf sprayed from an unknown source across both ends of the undercarriage after turning out of a parking lot and onto a main road.atf began to burn off of vehicle creating a thick smoke, making it difficult for other drivers to see and they avoided consumer's vehicle.consumer put her hazards on without the ability to accelerate regardless of how hard consumer pressed on gas.high rpms were noted then and the weeks prior.after attempting to park on a sloped residential driveway, the vehicle failed to go into gear and the parking brake was the only thing preventing it from rolling back down.approximately 4.5 quarts of atf leaked and the vehicle was towed to repair facility where it awaits a suitable replacement transmission after diagnosis of transmission failure.similarities between this and other incidents have been noted, and in previous instances, chrysler has blamed trim options (consumer's vehicle is a 4 cyl 2.5 l 3 speed automatic rio grande edition 4wd) as the reason for such issues- - - - - -however, jeep also advertised a "lifetime guarantee" relating to transmissionperformance.forum users offer 60k miles as an acceptable definition of "lifetime" however this consumer believes such claims should be interpreted to be literal and repair or reimburse for those covered repairs under their guarantee.approximate mileage was 101k.

Electrical system failure, battery has failed.tt

The battery went dead. Consumer had to jump the vehicle. The cables got crossed, causing a short which led to a fire. The ecm chip burned completely. While driving the lights were dimming on and off just before the engine shut down in the road. The engine began shifting, the battery partially melted, and the battery cable burned. Also the brake lines were all bent back due to the engine shifting approximately 4-6 inches. Consumer has called al. Miss. Az. Il. (52059100r) is the part number, ny. Says there are 243 consumers waiting for parts due to same defect.chrysler says they cannotfind a manufacturer for the parts. Also the oil filter was broken, and the oil casing is dented.this is the second time this has happened, the vehicle was modified by a chrysler dealership the first time to remedy the problem. Chrysler has a 243 customer back order and more to order.

Spark plug failed.

Approximately two years ago(the first incident) my parked vehicle started on its own, no keys in the ignition. The vehicle is a manual and was in first gear with the parking brake down when it started up and started lurching forward into the wall of the garage. I had to take the battery cables off of the battery to stop the vehicle from crashing into the wall. I took it to the dealership and the mechanic claimed, because the problem wasn't actully happening at the time, that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. It has happened on three different occasions since. Honestly, i'm affraid to park it anywhere in a public place because it could possibly endanger the lives of other motorists or pedestrians near by. At the moment i have it at petersburg jeep/chrysler in petersburg va. (804-862-1000) for the lastest incident involving this problem. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.thank you.

I purchased a 1995 jeep wrangler rio grande edition jan 2003. It had 103,000 miles on it and is in great condition. After about 6 months i started to hear a cold engine knocking in the 2.5l engine. I had mechanicls check the lower end and all looked good. I also replaced the oil pump, lifters, pushrods and rocker arms and the noise is still there until the engine warms up. I have researched this problem and have found that there was a problem with the 2.5l, and 4.0l engines that dc produced from 1991 - 1995which is piston slap when the engines get over 70,000 miles on them. I also found a class action suite against dc concerning this problem and the consumers won with the options of a new engine, good trade in on another car or great discounts on dealer items. I called dc and also wrote a letter about my problem and this law suite. The reply i got was that basicaly sucks to be me and they were not going to do anything for me. This is a manufacture defect and they will not correct this problem. So now ieither replace my engine that will cost me over 2,000 or hope and pray when i drive that it will not destroy itself. I am in the coast guard and my jeep is my transportation to and from work and i dont get alot of money that i can just throw around on a new engine when i just bought the jeep last year. If i did not like jeeps so much i would drive it to thier factory and park it there till they fix it.

I originally didn't consider filing a complaint until i had the third major complication occurred.i've since talked to other jeep owners with the 4.0 and have found motor mount and transmission failures are more prevalent than they should be.after the third problem (tranny), i began my search on the internet and found this site.it confirmed my suspicions about the substandard materials that dc is using in major components.i tried to reason with a service rep at dc by explaining that i'm a died in wool jeep fanatic (5 jeep jams) but she basically told me that motor mounts and tranny problems at these early miles is part of the vehicle ownership package.that may be true at dc, but not at other car makers like toyota and ford. This is definitely my last dc product. I'm glad i found this site; i know where to go in the future.

Exhaust manifold studs broke causing engine noise and loss of power.yh

I own a 1995 jeep wrangler, sahara model, and the question i have is that the exhaust manifold is cracked.the dealer found it and said it should be fixed or replaced for a nominal fee ($750).i elected not to have it done at that time.this was about a year ago.after further discussion with the serviceman about this he stated to me that it is a design problem and that they have repaired or replaced many of them. My question is if it is a design problem and the manufacturer is aware of it, then they should replace or repair it free of charge.what can be done to correct this problem?am i entitled to a free replacement of the part? please let me know if you have received any other complaints about this?i am not sure of the date but had to put something in the incident date field.thank you for your help.regards, darl m. The catalytic converter is failing, less than 50,000 miles after replacement under 1996 recall.

This catalytic converter is the replacement (5/96) after recall; i have only 54k+ miles on the car and have maintained it according to schedule. Should not have gone bad so soon.

My catalytic converter ,and i read they were recalled. I have already paid for the repair out of pocket. Can i be rembursed.

Catalytic converter failed.

I am the second owner of a 1995 wrangler.through warranty, the catalytic converter was replaced in september 1999.less than 15k miles later, i am told the converter must be replaced again.the dealer referred me to chrysler who have offered no assistance whatsoever.if i purchase a catalytic converter, i receive a one year warranty.chrysler provides an 8 year warranty on it from the date of "in service" of the vehicle (1995).the replacement due to no failure or misuse on my part makes no provision for any extension of the warranty and i am told no one has any discretionary authority on this matter.apparently, the oem catalytic converter isn't worth the endorsement.guess i won't get that second jeep - can't afford to keep up the catalytic converter purchases it requires, especially with the worthless warranty issues!

The catalytic converter was making a loud rattling noise like a tin can a couple of weeks ago then i noticed it had stopped making the noise 2-3 days ago.then just yesterday 8-3-99 when i went to drive the vehicle it hardly had any power at all & would not accelerate but to 40 mph.it would take about 1 mile to reach that speed.everything had been ok with the vehicle up till then.the dealer told me there was no converter recalls on this jeep after running the vin number, but after i investigated further on the internet & talking with lots of people both owners & muffler shops in my area i think this problem is a factory defect.several of the muffler shops commented that they replace on average of 6 to 7 catalytic converters a week on jeep wranglers alone& some with low mileage.again ,this vehicle ran like new until the noise in the converter came & went.also this jeep has never been off road once.thank you for any help with this matter &what i think is a premature failure.

Normal driving when 5th gear went out. Like everyone else. Feels like neutral. I have also had friends with jeep cherokee's have the same problem. If anyone else has this problem and feel like more than one voice is easier to hear, feel free to email me at [email protected].

Currently, after chrysler refused to warranty the vehicle, i had to take them to small claims court, which is scheduled for april 16, 1999. I am furious at theway this has been handled, and chysler has given no cusomer satisfaction, and have turned their noses up in the air, and al of my complaints previous to trial, both mail, and through the phone and personal fell on deaf ears. If you wish, please have someone contact me, i have plenty more to say about the defect, it's circumstances and the overall aspect of having to spend extra time and money to go to court to have a problem fixed that should have been fixed by chrysler a long time ago, thank you.

Dt*:the contact stated that the front driver side seat belt buckle failed to stay latched.during the failure, the vehicle was not in motion.the buckle would fit in the latch but would not click.the dealership was contacted and denied to repair the defect without charging for the repair.the contact expressed that a broken spring in the seatbelt latch may be the problem.

The front passenger's seat belt will not retract and will not restrain in an accident. The driver's side will not come out of the casing at all. This is the second set of seatbelts put in.

Driver's seat belt failed to retract/ replaced at approximately 40000 miles. Now it needs to be replaced again. Also, passenger's side seat belt has to be replaced for the same reason.

Problems with transmission on 1995 jeep wrangler.nar 06/27/2003*mr the consumers transmission failed while driving on the interstate it lost 2 gears without warning. The vehicle had to be towed away and damages cost approx $1873.93.after during research the consumer foundthat several jeeps had experienced the same problems so it wasevident that it was a manufacturer problem,so the consumer wishes to be fullyreimbursed for repairs.the consumer had brakes and shock work performed in the past.

Brakes keep pausing androtors and pads were replaced.while driving they continue to pause, resulting in extended stopping distance.dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Abs:vehicle turns left then right when braking, nearly caused collision with deer, entire brake system replaced, problem still exists.

Consumer received two recall notices frommanufacturer concerning brake problems. Dealer didn't want to honor the recalls.

The abs became inoperative.the vehicle had gone to the dealer and it was found that the speed sensor was no longer available, which caused the abs to malfunction. *la the abs had become inoperative and would not actuate the anti-skid braking device. *sc

Without prior warning or incident, brakes suddenly failed when brakes applied. Pedal responds initialt, the bottoms out to the floor with no corresponding braking applied to any wheels, system integrity is good, no fluid losses indicated, occured upon first drive of day, 70 degrees temperature, dry sunny day, had not been for standard transmission providing engine braking, probably would not be here to write this.

Brakes keep pausing androtors and pads were replaced.while driving they continue to pause, resulting in extended stopping distance.dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Front brake pads are eating deepinto the pits andspindle, not allowingbrake pads to access the rotors, resultingin warping and extended stopping distance. *ml

Right rotor worn at 23,273 miles.

When it is wet outside, or dew on the ground rear brakes grab really hard even though just barely touching brake pedal, the only way consumer has found to fix, is to lightly touch brakes while driving then they work normal.

While vehicle is parkedwould apply emergency brake, butpawl will release by itself. Sometimesvehicle had rolled.consumer also states that while driving when brakes are applied the rear brakes do not grab.

Rear brake backing plates failed.

Brakes failed in my 1995 jeep wrangler. Both circuits (front and rear) had all hydraulic fluid stream out. I needed to replace all the brake lines and hoses due to extensive corrosion to the brake lines. The front circuit line rusted thru and the fluid came out thru a rupture in the steel (rusted) line. The rear circuit hose for the drivers side wheel blew off the steel line (due to corrosion). Fortunate for me i was approaching a red light, didn't like the way the brakes felt, so applied the brakes harder than usual to determine if i could sense some defect and they went to the floor, luckily the light turned green at the same time and the cars in front of me moved out. I downshifted and slowed and pulled to the shoulder and then into a shopping center parking lot, from where the car was towed to a repair station. The service tech at the garage told me that all the lines are shot (which i confirmed myself). In addition he also warned me about advanced corrosion to the fuel rail as well as other steel componets (mostly tubular).this jeep has been in fresh water above the frame in the past while four wheeling, but never in salt water.the vehicle has 75,000 miles on it and has not been utilized very often (driven perhaps 1 or 2x per month except winter) over the last several years.has there been any other complaints of this type of issue? this could have killed me and or whoever else was with me should have made a panic stop prior to this happening. I would appreciate whatever info can be passed along to me. By the way, this repair was extremely expensive!

Please add vin. Consumer's son was driving approximately 30-35mph when leaving a four-way stop at approximately100yards while still in third gear, vehicleflipped over. The top of jeep grazed a pole and the roll bar broke. Also the seat belts were shreaded, andbroken loose.the driver was killed.

The contact owns a 1995 jeep wrangler. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the steering failed and the vehicle had no steering control. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic. The mechanic stated that the gear box for the steering wheel was rusted near its bolts and broken into pieces. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileages were 110,000.

The steering wheel lock pin has a sleeve that keeps coming out and rubbing the bottom of the steering wheel. It makes a grinding noise on the bottom of the wheel. The danger is, and fortunatley this happened in my driveway both times, that the sleeve will get caught in the locking pin hole on the steering wheel itself. This causes the steering wheel to become immobile!!!this is only capable of happening in a turn due to the angle of the hole on the steering wheel.

Vehicles tilt wheel steering locks up while driving.

Steering shaft sheared at rack and pinion cause a loss of control and the car went of the road hit a tree the back on the road and flipped over, causing bodily injury and major damage to the car.probably will be totaled!

Parking brake will not stay in park.self releases and rolls away when not in gear.

The metal floor under the driver's seat is prematurely wearing or deteriorating. Cause unknown.please give any further details.

I called bay area jeep dealerships (serramonte & putnam) regarding my 1995 jeep wrangler truck vibrations that developed over the last couple of weeks.online that this has a name,- the jeep death wobble.two days ago, my vehicle shook so violently i almost lost control of my car, was able to pull off the freeway, vehicle continued to shake even at 20 mph, and the shaking broke the bolts on my roll bar.i spoke to "tracy" at the chrysler corporation today who said that since there is no recall there is nothing the company can do, that i should fix this on my own and keep the receipts "in case there's a recall" which i find unacceptable.there is nothing i can find which indicates how this can be fixed.cas and the nhtsa, which i plan to do.please give me some direction here, i do not know how to fix this thing.

After picking my son up from his school bus stop, the vehicle began lightly shuddering at approx.8-10 mph.i thought maybe a weight had fallen off and continued the block and a half drive home.when i went to leave the house again later in the evening, i noticed a mess of what looked like tire shavings on the ground and looked closely at the tire.the tread had separated from the tire.i changed the tire to the spare but now am very concerned about the remaining tires and the possibility of this happening to them.i am the mother of two young kids-recently separated from my husband and this is my only transportation.
