I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. The air bag light stays on all the time and the chime for it goes off very often. I have taken it to a dealer and they said that it may be the clock spring. I was later told that many of the models in this year have the same problem. Why are we paying out of pocket for something that is obviously a faulty part on the factory's part?

For a couple of years now my air bag warning light comes on and an intermittent warning chime (1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo). I have not had it repaired because i can't afford the expense. I don't know if the airbag will deploy when it shouldn't or if it will not deploy when it should. I have seen the same complaint on this safety website and think it should be addressed by jeep.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep laredo. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000. The current mileage was approximately 113,000.

Air bag warning light started coming on intermittently indicating malfunction in airbag deployment system. Took to dealer who determined there was a defective "clock spring" in the steering column causing the airbag malfunction. (note that this has nothing to do with any "clock" but was told this is the electrical connection between the drivers airbag and the steering column wiring harness). The part was replaced for $350 by dealer but was not covered under the extended warranty from jeep that we had purchased. Called jeep extended warranty number and was told tough luck, part not covered.

The air bag light constantly comes on and chimes on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo.it is mostly when i make a left turn.this is a very costly repair.the manufacturer should make a re-call of all these jeeps.what are you waiting for "a terrible accident"i found out that all jeeps made in 1999 have this defect, and nothing has been done about it.concern jeep owner.

Dt: contact stated the driver and passenger's side air bags did not deploy during a collision. There was no prior warning. This vehicle was totaled.

The consumer was involved in a head on collision with a telephone pole when she tried to avoid hitting a deer on the road at 45 mph. The air bags did not deploy upon impact and the seat belt did not hold. The consumer sufferedinjuries.

When i first bought the car used in 2002 i noticed a quick flash of my lights at night on/off/on while driving. Thought i was imagining at the time. It would system shut down only at stops and very infrequent. I drive it daily and now it happens 3-6 times a week with no warning. Total system shut down. Engine stalls and all gauges are off. Loss of brakes and power steering. It has always started back up. At stop lights, on the road at high speed, it used to happen only at stop lights but now it happens anywhere and much more frequent.very scary.

Experiencing problems with the drivers side door lock.it makes a loud buzzing sound when unlocking using the remote or manually.the door will unlock but won't lock.alarm will sound even if door is unlocked when opened and remote has been used to lock all other doors. I have also had to have the front rotors and brake pads replaced twice in the last year.

Jeep shuts down while driving at any speed. Will shut down/stall and may start back up or might be 10 minutes or two hours or the next day before it will start again. Stalling has gotten progressively more frequently.i have almost been rear ended twice when it stalls. Been to several mechanics and no one has been able to correct problem.

We bought a used 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo last year for our son to drive, thinking it would be a safe vehicle for him in all kinds of weather and road conditions. We did not expect to have problems driving on the highway on dry roads in perfect weather. The vehicle has started to stall at highway speeds, causing a loss of power steering and brakes, and most likely air bags as well. We are lucky he is a safe driver, and was able to get the vehicle off the road safely. Our trusted mechanic, who is a jeep owner, changed the crankcase position sensor, this did not help. He advised us to bring it to the local jeep dealer, because they would be better able to troubleshoot the problem, reading the codes, as opposed to throwing parts at it. The dealer cleaned some ground wires, gave it back to us, and it stalled on the highway going home, and wouldn't restart. We had to wait for a tow truck in a hazardous location in a rainstorm. We brought it back to the dealer, and they keep it for a week. Put 50 miles on it test driving, and couldn't duplicate the problem. They didn't charge us for this, they seem like they are trying to help, but they don't seem to have a good handle on the problem. The problem could be caused by any number of electrical components, from the computer, to the wiring, to sensors, modules, even the ignition switch. No codes are displayed.in looking on this website, i found 5 complaints from just 1999 and 2000, for the same problem. One woman is terrified to drive it with her three kids in the car. This is not confined to just these model years. There are a lot of these vehicles on the road, some people have been able to fix the problem, some certainly have not because it is hard to pinpoint. How chrysler has been able to duck responsibility on this serious problem for so long is beyond me.

Erratic, intermittent instrumentation failures over the past three years starting with the airbag light going on and off, a malfunctioning odometer and culminating in the recent failure of the speedometer. I suspect this is caused by a defective electrical connector as noted in company service bulletin #081599. I have not been able to obtain this info from either chrysler or the jeep dealership. Clearly this is a defective part and should be recalled by chrysler as it is a safety hazard.please refer to nhtsa complaints # 10025741, 896900, 723322, 10026823... In addition, my front passenger window crashed inside the door while driving. This was due to the plastic clip breaking in the window regulator that has since been redesigned.i have already had to replace the driver side window at the cost of several hundred dollars about a year ago for the exact same problem. Clearly this is a defective part and is not due to "normal wear and tear" and should be recalled by chrysler as it is a safety hazard.in addition, my interior rear view mirror felloff my windshield into my lap while driving onthe expressway in 2000. Was told the glue lost adhesion due to exposure to direct sunlight. It was fixed by dealer after i purchased a "mirror repair kit". Clearly this is bad design and an enormous safety hazard.i am presently driving my jeep in a downtown metro area with three windows and a non- working speedometer until i can afford to get problems repaired.

I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden i herd a loud noise and before i knew it my truck was filled with smoke and i couldnt see out the wind shield i had to hurry up and get to the side by the guard rail while struggling to see, and i had my kids in the car with me .i had to have it towed to my house my mechanic came to check it and discovered a big hole and when he took the engine out he said you could tell it was there already and the dealership had to patch it up before they sold it to me because it was to perfect and i only had the truck for 1 year.

While driving on the interstate and preparing to exit, vehicle would not slow down or decelerate. I tried to apply the brakes in attempt to stop.shifted into neutral in order to gain control.rpm's immediatly shot up to 3000 and fluctuated between 3000 - 4000.pulling to the side and looking under the hood to see if there was any obstruction in the accelerator linkage, there was not.i attempted to start the vehicle again 3 times with the same results.i let the vehicle cool for 1/2 hour ( temperature was in proper range ), normal operation was obtained. This the first ( and only episode ) i hope to experience. I am an experienced driver and was able to think quickly. Some others may not be so lucky. There is obviously a trend and problem here that chrysler should deal with. After all i'm sure they dont want us to start buying other makes of vehicles.

Have had brakes on this vehicle worked on 7 times since purchased new. Only has approximately 70k miles. All seemed to be the result of warped rotors. Latest incident check engine light went on, had head gasket replaced, serpentine belt replaced and t-stat.

The blend door on my car are all messed up. Ive had this a/c problem. Checked out soo many times by dealers and mechanics.everyone says it wasthe blend door, i get different amounts of air from all of the different vents.

Thereare no headlights.also, front bumper/ hoodare distorted, andfront doors are out of alignment. Dealership is aware ofproblem.

The headlight covers are very opaque and distorted. Visibility is greatly reduced at night making visibility very poor. I have tried several polymer cleaners with little or no effect.the distortion is on the inside of the headlight cover.this is a defect in the cover itself, not a maintenance problem. The cost with labor to replace both covers would be close to $500. A safety recall should be placed on the headlight covers immediately.this is a common problem with this model.

The plastic head light covers of my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limitedhave clouded over both on the outside and inside.therefore, making it almost impossible for the head lights to shine through this plastic covering.the dealer informed me that they do not replace these plastic covers.instead, i must purchase the entire head light assembly units for both sides of the vehicle.the cost of replacing this is approximately $700.it seems to me that when these plastic head light covers cloud up, a safety issue has occurred.in addition, it is a puzzle to me why one must replace the entire working head light units just because the covers have clouded. Thank you.

The headlightlenses cracked and a thick film covered the them which provided little while driving..

Stalling at and while approaching traffic lights.replaced spark plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, and cleaned injectors to no avail.during 25 mile commute it happens at least twice.*la

I have a 99 jeep grand cherokeelaredo and we noticed that the fuel tank skid plate was all rusty. And pieces were falling off. My boyfriendlooked at it and come to find out the skid plate is the only thing holding my gas tank in. The one side where the bolts are were all rusted and not even connected so my gas tank was about to fall out of my car and only being held in by the other bolt on the other side. I think this is a true hazardand needs to be recalled asap! ever jeep i see has the same issue with rusty skid plates over the gas tank. My jeep. Runs grew and body is fine the gas tank skid plate needs to be fix asap recall now! i'm scared to drive my car with my kids in it

We own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee larado and have had nothing but problems since we bought it. The drivers side door lock has gone bad you can lock all the doors with the remote but have to lock the drivers side by hand and it makes a loud buzzing sound when locking & unlocking. Our tires had\ve already had to be replaced with only 50,000 mile on the vehicle the in dec 2002 the vehicle starting making a loud whining sound when reaching speeds over 45+ the sound would increase upon letting up on the gas pedal. It increasing became worse where it would constantly whinbeall the time at all speeds and also when completely stopped. We have had to keep taking it back to be worked on 3 times so far, they have replaced the whole transmission including the torque converter, transfer case , fuel injection system and the noise still persist. I have done so much research on the internet and see that chrysler refuses to do a "[xxx]" thing about any of these problems or these lemon vehicles. What will it take to get their help and for them to see these vehicles have too many problems.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

1999 jeep grand cherokee 6 cyl. Transmission shifter can be taken out of park position without key in ignition and without foot on brake pedal.

Vehicle is leaking brake and transmission fluids excessively.

While traveling on the highway the vehicle pulled to the right into a ditch.the driverside seatbelt retractor pulled away from the latch.the vehicle was park on a slight incline and the started rolling backward.the dealership is aware of the problem. Nlm

Vehicle was in park with the emergency brake engaged, without prior warning the vehicle jumped a curb into the window of blockbuster.dealership is aware ofvehicle.

Rear axle whine reported and entire axle was replaced 18 months ago, chrysler fixed under warranty relief program.now front axle has same whine and needs to be replaced, they have refused all assistance.

Purchased a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo on 12/23/2002 with 36400 miles on it.i have had the front brake rotors replaced twice in 4 months.now the rear differential i.e. Rear wheel bearings need to be replaced.estimated to have $800.00 in repair, and jeep is making a horrible whining, grinding noise.company refuses to stand by their product.current mileage 52,000.i have been told that this particular part should last the lifetime of the vehicle.another mechanic told us this year and model that jeep is known for this trouble along with the brake problem.why doesn't someone make jeep co. Accountable for mechanical defects?*la

1999 jeep grand cherokee 4wd with inline 6cyd. Has had all the other complaints listed on this site, ie, power window motors, front brakes, transmission leak, steering squealing noise and the worst of all, the rear differential whining.

Bracket to the front driver's seat snaps. Very dangerous. Happened while driving. Why the seat brackets haven't been recalled is a crime. What's more, the dealer wants over$1000 to replace the whole bracket! this isn't right. This is a major safety issue borne out of poor engineering that should be recalled and replaced by chrysler before any potential accidents/fatalities occur.

Driver seat is broke the tracks are good but the seat frame is split and leans to the right side, the seat mounts are broken. The seat rocks, luckily no injuries have been caused. Tried to find a seat went to a local salvage yard and was told many people have been looking for the jeep driver seats , state wide.if chrysler doesn't address this problem soon i am quite sure there will be some law suits.i love my jeep, it has been faithful to me since i bought her. She has 166,070miles on her and have no signs of giving up.

06-10-2008 - the left front bracket of the power seat mechanism to seat frame cracked completely through making the seat wobble badly and the jeep undriveable. There are 4 rotating brackets at the corners and this is one of them. I was fortunate that when it broke, it didn't cause a crash. As this just happened, it has not been repaired yet. The dealer told me that the repair would probably be replacing the entire seat at$ 1,000.00. There were no unusual events that led up to this failure. Please contact me at any time for more information.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo. The contact stated that the drivers seat was fractured. The body and base of the seat detached from the track causing instability in the seat and continuous movement. The dealer advised repairs could be made to the vehicle but would have to be performed in intervals. The seat could not be replaced with one standard seat. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 152,000.

The drivers side seat frame broke and the seat rocks back and forth.

I was driving my jeep in traffic when the front drivers seat dropped at the front left corner. The weld on the seat snapped, and now the seat wobbles from front left to back right, worried that the rest will break when im driving and kill someone or myself in a bad accident. Read hundreds of the same complains and to me it should be a recall and sort it out before its to late.the jeep dealer did not want to know.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep laredo.when the contact attempted to sit down on the driver's seat, the right side of the base of the seat snapped.the seat became crooked.six months prior to the failure, the seat was replaced by the dealer.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current and failure mileages were 108,000.

The contact owns a 1999 jeep laredo.while approaching a stop light, the front driver's side seat detached from its proper position and retracted backwards without warning.the seat was able to move excessively, which increased the risk of serious injury or a crash.the contact noticed that the previous owner welded the seat to its proper position because the mounts were fractured.the vehicle has not been inspected by a technician to determine the cause of the failure.the failure and current mileages were 150,000.

My driver side front seat is completely broken off the tracks of my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo.

Bought jeep grand cherokee used from a dealer with 34.600 miles on it - brakes seemed fine then. Soon after brakes started squealing and then vibrating - the latter became really violent by the time i had 52,000 miles on the vehicle. I replaced the front pads and the rotors with used ones that were turned. The vibration stopped but the rears were squealing by then. I turned the rotors and replaced the rear pads at 58.000 miles. At 60,000 miles it is beginning to vibrate again and the squeal is very pronounced again. I have since learned that this is a common problem with this year and model...to the point where they should have been recalled long ago. This is a safety issue: i almost lost control at 55 mph when i had to hit the brakes somewhat forcefully. The dealer told me a fix will cost $800.00 just for the fronts to solve the warping brake rotor problem. I understand that there is no backing plate on this vehicle so that when it rains cold water splashes directly on the hot components. It certainly appears to be a design issue, so i wonder where the ntsb has been on this one...? chrysler is just waiting it out so it doesn't have to do anything about it - especially a 4-5 year old vehicle now.

While depressing brakes pedal went all the way to thefloor, resulting inextended stopping distance. Please provide further information.

Vehicle is leaking brake and transmission fluids excessively.

The brakes chatter/pulsate during high speed braking, the dealer first turned the front rotors at about 9000 miles which improved braking but only lasted for about 4000 miles then the brakes begin to chatter again, at 14000 miles the dealer replaced the rotors and brake pads, that fix lasted about 24000 miles.

When putting on brakes steering wheel vibrates, and truck is all over the road.

While driving the front end of the vehicle bounced around because the calipers became stuck.the dealer replaced the calipers at the consumers expense. *nlm

Similar to many other complaints filed with the nhtsa - while driving at highway speed applied the brakes to slow down and vehicle started to pull to right into the other lane. This caused calipers to lock up. Took vehicle to dealer , again for the fourth time for this problem & had it repaired. After each repair problem would reappear. Was told that this is a known issue by the dealer and the jeep calipers were not made well. Dealer said (after already spending $2,000 in brkae issues) that the only fix would be to spend another $600 to put all new rotors and calipers on - that jeep had redesgined. No recall notice was given to cover this cost - although i am told jeep has a technical service bulliten on this. What recourse does the consumer have to this very common and expensive jeep issue without a recall notice!!!

Caller stated: every time brakes are depressed, the front suspension pulsates/vibrates.caller received a service bulletin with instructions to completely replace the brake system.rotors and pads have been serviced several times.

The brakeshave failed making the ability to stop the vehicle difficult. Taken for repair of the rotors for a total of 3 times, but the problem is still occurring. Manufacturer was notified by consumer.

Have had to have the rotors fixed 4 times in 65,000. Car shakes violently in front and difficulty stopping at speeds in excess of 35 mph. Have never had a vehicle with as many brake problems as this jeep has had. Normally brakes should not require repair for the first 45,000 miles. The brake system has engineering flaws. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****768320

I bought a 99 jeep grand cherokee lorado with the extended warranty, i was told it was bumper to bumper, but when the brakes needed to be redone and the rotors warped the company told me they are only covered to 15,000 miles, and that they wouldn't replace the rotors that warped because they aren't covered anyomore. Since i purchased the truck with 35,000 miles on it and the extended warranty covers it to 100,000, i think that chrysler should replace the rotors that were bad to begin with.

While traveling66mph onhighway had steering problems.

While driving,a fire started in engine compartment evidenced by smoke and flames, stopped car, opened hood and two foot high flames burst out of engine compartment. Called st charles il fire department who extinguished flames, had car towed to dealer. Dealer determined cause of fire was power steering hose burst spraying fluid on exhaust manifold and was ignited. Dealer repaired by replacing hose at a cost of $348 that was not covered by the jeep extended warranty.

I think this is a true hazardand needs to be recalled asap! ever jeep i see has the same issue with rusty skid plates over the gas tank. My jeep. Runs grew and body is fine the gas tank skid plate needs to be fix asap recall now! i'm scared to drive my car with my kids in it

1999 jeep grand cherokee limited - no heat on driver's side - mechanic says blend air doors problem, a problem on most jeep grand cherokee models.this costly problem is so common among jeep grand cherokees that there should be a recall for this problem.ak
